‘We don’t need any more wife beaters’ There are enough wife-beaters in New Zealand without US rapper Chris Brown coming here, former justice minister Judith Collins says. Tickets for Brown’s Auckland show went on sale yesterday, but it’s unclear whether he’ll be allowed into the country. The star was convicted in 2009 of assaulting his thengirlfriend Rihanna. Unless he’s granted a special exemption as a performer, he won’t be given a visa. Brown hasn’t yet applied for exemption, Immigration NZ says.

“He was convicted of a felony, a serious offence in the United States, and I don’t see why he should come here,” Ms Collins said yesterday. “My personal view is that we have enough wife-beaters in this country and we don’t need any more.”

Blunt predicts his X Factor loser James Blunt says one of his X Factor performers can’t win the series because she isn’t disadvantaged enough. The UK crooner told AAP that Natalie Conway, who is one of three artists under his tutelage in the over-25 category, basically lacks a sob story.

The 33-year-old songstress is considered as one of the most polished performers and it’s why Blunt deliberately gave her one of the more difficult songs to perform on Sunday night.

Conway sang Florence and the Machine’s Spectrum, which has a wide vocal range and she nailed it. “I have Natalie Conway, who I think is a superstar, and I don’t think she will win the show because people vote for the underdog,” Blunt said.

Nothing wrong with being a bird-brain Bird-brained? Certainly not the North Island robin (below) anyway, which has just demonstrated no less a scientific finding that some animals may possess a general intelligence structure similar to that of us. The tiny native bird, which is only slightly larger than a house sparrow, features in a new study in the leading scientific journal Animal Behaviour, and provides the first direct evidence of birds having a general underlying intelligence that pins together all of its different cognitive skills. Victoria University animal behaviour researcher Dr Rachael Shaw was able to prove this by setting up six voluntary cognitive tasks for a group of the birds at Zealandia, focusing on colours, symbols, spatial memory, inhibitory control and motor skills. “The question we wanted to ask was, can we quantify cognitive ability or intelligence in a wild animal, and if we do that, do we see a similar kind of structure to their intelligence that we see in humans?” While some birds had been shown to be remarkably clever with some cognitive tasks there had been little scientific research around the underlying base of intelligence. Dr Shaw’s statistical analyses showed robins may have something like it, and that these patterns were highly unlikely to have happened by chance. She said setting a variety of tasks was imperative for measuring the structure of intelligence in the robins, which were perfect subjects given their territorial behaviour and curiosity made them more likely to approach humans.

Hathaway wants support for mums Oscar-winning actress Anne Hathaway called for more “understanding and support” for working mothers as her latest film premiered in the UK. The star of Les Miserables and The Devil Wears Prada plays a working mother struggling to juggle her successful career with her personal life, in The Intern, which also stars Robert De Niro. At the film’s European premiere at the Vue West End cinema in London’s Leicester Square, Hathaway spoke about the idea of women “having it all”. “I think we need to start thinking about what ‘all’ is, for ourselves as individuals, and I think we need to all collectively, men and women, transform society so that there is better understanding and support, particularly in this case for women in the workplace.”

The film’s director Nancy Meyers said: “We can juggle career with motherhood. I think what the movie says is it’s not easy for anybody – both working mums and dads.” Hathaway, who wore a black lace dress by Jonathan Simkhai and Christian Louboutin heels, revealed the role was a dream come true because she had previously auditioned for Meyer.

Losing sleep?

Dr Lora Wu, a sleep expert at Massey University’s Sleep/Wake Research Centre, said while daylight saving brings sunny evenings, they turn into restless nights and lost sleep for many people. Even though the amount of sleep lost can seem small it can have a big impact, Dr Wu said. “Daylight saving challenges your internal timekeeper, the circadian clock. Your circadian clock does not automatically shift with daylight savings, so it can take some time to recover.

“Springing forward is harder than falling back in time. It is easier to fall asleep and wake up later than it is to fall asleep and wake up earlier each day. It will likely be harder for night-owls to adjust ...” Dr Wu said large international studies show some countries experience a rise in the number of car crashes following daylight saving.

Gym owner has 21 days to comply

Gym owner Monique Rouxel might be fighting a bureaucratic battle to stay on the right side of the Ashburton District Council’s planning rules, but she’s determined her Alford Forest Road gym will not close.

Mrs Rouxel has been running a gym in her back yard for the past 18 months, unaware she needed a resource consent for her home business because it was in a residential zone.

The council found out about the gym when she was potted by a neighbour who complained about noise and the number of cars parked along Alford Forest Road.

The council visited the gym, found it was operating without a resource consent and advised her she needed to either complete the required paper work or move her business elsewhere.

Relocation was definitely not her first choice option, Mrs

Rouxel said, and neither was closure.

Her clients stepped into the fray, taking to social media to give their support for the gym and Mrs Rouxel.

Initially she believed obtaining a resource consent would be unaffordable but she has had an offer of assistance from an out-of-town planner to help her work through the consenting process, she said.

Today she is in a race against time to have either the consent filed and approved or to find an alternative business base. An abatement notice from the council was due to be delivered yesterday putting her on 21 days’ notice to cease trading.

“I’m still planning for a future.

I’ve got a business we’re going to look at moving to as an option in the meantime until we get our resource consent application,” Mrs Rouxel said.

source consent process and so far has had a 100 per cent success rate in gaining approval for the back yard gym. “They’ve all

been awesome. We have to get all the neighbours’ approval on this and we hope we can get into mediation with the neighbour

She is also looking at off-street parking options for the home gym.

The consent is unlikely to be granted within the 21 days of the abatement notice, and now Mrs Rouxel is on the hunt for a property to rent as an interim gym.

“Moving out is not what I want to do, but I’m not closing, I’m not giving up. All I needed was someone to help me get to the next stage.”

The Alford Forest Road gym has become a victim of its own success with membership growing from a handful of people attending a few sessions each week to a membership of around 150 and several sessions a day.

Many of its clients say the gym and Mrs Rouxel have changed their lives, helping them lose weight, gain fitness and grow confidence in what they described as a family atmosphere.

Ashburton might have been shrouded in mist early yesterday, but that didn’t stop enthusiastic book collectors bagging a place in the queue to be first through the door at this year’s Ashburton Rotary Bookarama.

When Rotarian John Rickard arrived at 7.20am there were already dozens of people lined up at the door, wrapped up against the chill.

When the doors opened it was a case of stand back or be flattened in the rush, he said.

Two hours in and the event was showing signs of being a roaring success, he said.

“It’s going fantastic. We’re getting a lot of comments about quality, people are saying it’s the best they’ve seen.”

And if Rotarians were enthusiastic about the book festival, then the bargain hunters were even more so. One dealer had been on the floor from 8am, had amassed a pile of 20 banana boxes full of books and was still searching the trestle tables for more bargains.

“It’s a great place for a collector to come. I’ve already got 50 in my bag,” he said.

This year a large collection of military and war history books was up for sale and that piqued the interest of Christchurch buyer Brian Sowman. His biggest problem was deciding what not to buy rather than what not to buy.

Ashburton’s Mary Buchanan arrived with a shopping list.

Two hours later her bag was full but nothing had been checked off that list. She’s a regular – both as a buyer and a recycler of last year’s books.

A lone man prowled the huge cookbook section, saying he was looking for something that would help his wife “hone up her cooking skills”.

The French Farm resident said it was his first Bookarama visit. He couldn’t believe the size of the event.

Even the most seasoned of Rotarians said they found the first day crowds massive. Books were flooding out the door in boxes, bags and often by the trolley load. For the organisers there was a constant round of table restocking.

Teacher leaders need reward

Increasing pressure and poor remuneration has been blamed for putting teachers off applying for middle management positions.

Teachers needs to be valued more to avoid a crisis in middle management, a Mid Canterbury principal says.

The issue has become so pronounced that it will be discussed at the next Post Primary Teachers’ Association national

conference, which kicks off in Wellington today.

Ashburton College principal Grant McMillan says there are “real challenges” facing the education sector, particularly around valuing those who want to step up into leadership positions.

“That middle management level, we really rely on that,” he said.

“It’s a critical part of decision making, it’s the people who lead teams of teachers who actually

make things happen for students.”

That tier was also the group that has been ignored the most in recent years, he believed.

“You might be the Head of English, or the Head of Biology, and you’re responsible for four or five other people, you’re trying to make sure the course works and so on, and you’re getting an extra $40-50 a week after tax,” he said.

“It’s actually a massive disincentive, why would you do it.”

However according to the Ministry of Education there is no evidence that schools are struggling to fill middle management rolls.

Head of student achievement Dr Graham Stoop said turnover rates were also consistent with the rest of the sector.

“The data we have doesn’t indicate middle leaders or management staff are leaving or that when they do, schools are unable to replace them,” he said.

NZ stance on Syrian regime softening Prime Minister John Key says a softening in the stance of the United States and Australia towards Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria matches New Zealand’s position on the controversial leader.

Mr Key arrived in New York yesterday and his first appointment will be to hear US President Barack Obama and Russia’s President Vladimir Putin speak at the opening of the General Assembly.

Both are also due to meet – a meeting at which Russia’s support of Assad’s regime is expected to be the top topic.

It comes after US Secretary of State John Kerry indicated the US was open to Assad remaining in power for at least a transition period after earlier saying he should go immediately.

That softer stance was followed by Australia’s Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, who is in New York and said the need to avoid a vacuum of power could require Assad remaining in power for a transition period.

Speaking to media outside the apartment block of New Zealand’s representative to the UN, Mr Key said New Zealand was not comfortable with Assad remaining in charge of Syria for the long term.

“But what we do recognise is we’ve never argued he has to go immediately – we have to work our way through these issues.

So we’ve never argued up front that there has to be a regime change but we are strongly of the view that there is no long term place for him in Syria.”

Flags at half-mast Flags flew at half-mast yesterday as the survivors of the Lake Tekapo kayaking tragedy returned to their university campus. The group of students from Melbourne’s Monash University had been kayaking on the lake when a gust of wind caused a swell and tipped them into icy water on Friday. All 11 were wearing life jackets, but 21-year-old Danny Hollnsteiner and 20-year-old James Murphy were thought to have succumbed to hypothermia and died. In a letter to students and staff, Monash University vice-chancellor Margaret Gardner said flags flew at halfmast on campus.

Farmers’ market yields early treats Stall holders and customers were wrapped up against the early spring chill for the first Ashburton Farmers’ Market of the season on Saturday.

Low temperatures didn’t dampen the spirits of those who were out to bag a bargain and they found plenty to choose from, from the range of hot food, cakes, meat, eggs

and flowers on sale. Organiser Judith Crozier said that most stall holders went home happy.

“Numbers of stalls will start building each week now as the ground warms up and vegetables start coming onstream,” she said.

The market is held in the West Street car park every Saturday from 9am until noon.

TV viewers lap up RWC More than 340,000 people in New Zealand tuned in to watch the All Blacks play Namibia last Friday morning, making it the most watched game on a single channel so far this Rugby World Cup. The 7am game – played at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London and screened live on SKY Sport 1 – saw 8.1 per cent of all people aged five years and older in New Zealand watching, which is over 93,000 more viewers than for the All Blacks’ first game

against Argentina.

Delayed, free-to-air coverage of the game at midday on Prime also had over 59,000 people watching, and a replay on the same channel at 6pm had another roughly 53,000 on top of that. The Pool C hit-out was followed closely in weekend viewership numbers by the England v Wales clash at Twickenham.

Kiwis have counted nearly 20,000 native wood pigeons to make this year’s Great Kereru Count the most successful yet. As the weeklong nationwide survey closed, a total 8743 observations had been recorded, topping last year’s total 7101. “While observations are still coming in, at this stage we can estimate that around 19,000 kereru were sighted throughout New Zealand – from Stewart Island to the far north,” WWF’s kereru count co-ordinator Tony Stoddard said. Kereru play a vital role in dispersing the large fruit of our native trees such as tawa, miro and matai, which has given the plump pigeon the nickname “the gardener of the skies”. McAlpine farewelled Around 350-400 people gathered at the St James Theatre in Auckland to farewell Helena McAlpine Barton, who recently passed away after a long battle with breast cancer. The service was led by broadcaster John Campbell, with speakers including Liz Lyons, Shauvaugn Ruakere, husband Chris Barton and daughter Shannon McAlpine. A screen at the service is showing tweets in tribute to Ms McAlpine, collected under the hashtag #WeHeartHelena. Helena McAlpine, 37, died last week after a high profile battle with breast cancer.

Smokers dying breed Smokers are becoming a dwindling breed in New Zealand, with tobacco consumption down 23 per cent in the past five years.

However anti-smoking advocates say rates are still not falling as fast as in Australia, where the introduction of plain packaging has been credited with a 20 per cent drop in consumption in just three years. The figures, supplied to the Ministry of Health by New Zealand tobacco manufacturers show average cigarette consumption has declined 6.3 per cent per year since 2010 equating to a 23 per cent decline in consumption overall.

Cracking crowds on East St From P1 “It’s been absolutely brilliant.

Numbers wise it’s right up there if not better than other days and the stall holders are all saying it’s been a great day.

Chatting to people they all seem pretty happy,” said organiser Bob McDonald.

Late afternoon when East Street traditionally emptied, there were still people browsing stalls and enjoying a late afternoon snack from the dozens of food stalls.

“There’s been some beautiful food out there this year and we’ve had such a good mix of stalls with really good quality stock,” he said.

For many people the street day was as much about a chance to chat, to catch up with friends and to enjoy the carnival atmosphere, but he estimated the amount of money that shoppers spent over the day was high.

“By the time you buy say a pair of socks, a belt and some food, you’ve probably spent more than $50. Most people would have spent at least $20 on food. I think they had a boomer day. There were queues all the time at the food stalls.” he said.

Crowds of locals were boosted by hundreds of bargain hunters from South Canterbury, enjoying their district’s anniversary day. Stall holders, however, came from around the South Island.

As the last of the shoppers headed home and the stall holders packed up their leftover goods, Mr McDonald and his team made a final sweep of East Street to clear it of Boulevard Day detritus, but the clean up was made much easier knowing that another very successful street day had been put to bed, he said.

Tourists crash Five tourists from Asia, only in the country for a matter of hours after flying into Christchurch, crashed on a West Coast highway over the weekend. The crash happened on State Highway 73 at Turiwhate, east of Hokitika, on Saturday afternoon. Kumara Volunteer Fire Brigade fire chief Gary Lindbom said the westbound vehicle clipped a culvert and tipped on its side, possibly after the driver became blinded by the sun. None of the occupants was seriously injured, save for seatbelt bruising. - NZME

The Ashburton Borough School Greenies have put their artistic talent to good use in a bid to protect the critically endangered Black Billed Gull.

Earlier this year, pupils were challenged to design posters that urged people to look

after the birds.

Six posters were chosen, and copies of those can now be seen at access points along the Ashburton River.

Boyracer runs over passenger after crash A boyracer who drove over a passenger ejected from another car after a horror 150km/h street race crash fled the scene, fearing he had “just killed someone”.

William James Henry Le Grys, 20, was driving a Honda through Christchurch at about 8.30pm on July 2 this year when he started tailgating a Holden, “enticing” the other driver to race.

The Holden driver obliged and a race began along the two-lane Russley Road. Le Grys reached speeds in excess of 150km/h, police say. When he caught innocent motorists, he began weaving between them, constantly changing lanes to pass them, Christchurch District Court was told yesterday.

During the “weaving manoeuvres”, the Holden driver lost control and went into a tail spin. He smashed into a concrete culvert and his passenger – and brother – was ejected out of the car. Le Grys, who was travelling close behind, was unable to avoid him and drove over top of him.

He then fled the crash scene without checking on the victim, later telling police he “panicked thinking he had just killed someone”.

The victim suffered “quite horrific injuries”, police said, including an unstable fractured pelvis, a fractured left collarbone, and punctured lungs.

Le Grys pleaded guilty to charges of being party to operating a motor vehicle in a race causing injury and failing to stop and ascertain injury after a crash. Judge John Strettell remanded him on bail until October 19 for a restorative justice meeting - NZME

More sex could be the secret to a healthy prostate, New Zealand researchers have found. A new report, Prostate Health…Sex, Lies and Misconceptions, released by Christchurch-based natural health researcher Warren Matthews, says men as young as 40 need to adopt a natural preventative approach, which includes more sex, to improve prostate health.

This month marks Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and men are being urged to “man up and give prostate cancer the finger” by submitting to regular digital prostate exams as part of the international Blue September campaign.

Bus drivers assaulted Seven bus drivers have officially complained of being assaulted by passengers this year, says Auckland Transport in response to Saturday’s sneaky punching of Logan Pillay as he steered his bus in a queue of traffic. The 57-yearold Glen Innes man’s employer NZ Bus, which has 1100 drivers, had reported seven assaults on its drivers this year, said AT spokesman Mark Hannan. “While not wanting to minimise the seriousness of any assault, they are clearly not happening in large numbers.” In one of the assaults, on March 21, a Manukau driver’s assailant tried to run off with the fare box.

Tobacco raid A 60-second ram raid on a Northland garage saw gloved thieves make off with a cabinet filled with thousands of dollars worth of tobacco and cigarettes.

Obama, Putin address tensions Face-to-face for the first time in nearly a year, President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin will confront rising tensions over Moscow’s military engagement in Syria, as well as the stubborn crisis in Ukraine.

Underscoring their deep differences, the US and Russia couldn’t even agree on the purpose of the meeting, which will occur on the sidelines of an annual United Nations summit.

The White House said it would focus on Ukraine and getting Moscow to live up to a fragile peace plan. The Kremlin said Ukraine would be discussed only if time allowed, with Syria and the fight against the Islamic State dominating the discussions.

Despite little sign of a breakthrough on either front, US officials insisted it was still worthwhile for the leaders to meet — something that has happened rarely since Obama vowed to isolate Putin in retaliation for Russia’s provocations in Ukraine.

“The president believed it would be irresponsible to let this occasion in which the two leaders would be in the same city pass without trying to test to see whether progress could be made on these newly intractable crises,” Samantha Power, the US ambassador to the United Nations, said Sunday on ABC. Ahead of their early evening meeting, Obama and Putin will each have a chance to make

their case to a broader audience of world leaders gathered in New York for the United Nations General Assembly.

Obama is expected to emphasise the need for a political resolution to Syria’s civil war that includes the ouster of President Bashar Assad, a Russian ally. Putin, meanwhile, is expected to argue that Assad’s military is the most capable force for fighting the Islamic State — the extremist group

with key strongholds in Syria and Iraq — and therefore needs to be strengthened.

“There is no other solution to the Syrian crisis than strengthening the effective government structures and rendering them help in fighting terrorism,” Putin said in an interview with CBS. Ahead of his UN visit, Putin deployed more weapons and troops to Syria. The Kremlin has also intensified its diplomatic efforts in recent months, launching a dialogue with Saudi Arabia, which is firmly bent on unseating Assad, and the Syrian opposition, in a renewed attempt to try to negotiate a political compromise.

In another development, Iraq’s military said Sunday it will begin sharing “security and intelligence” information with Syria, Russia and Iran to help combat the Islamic State group.

The move that could further complicate US efforts to battle the extremists without working with Damascus and its allies.

Live rabbits as bait Cages of live rabbits were openly supplied at greyhound race tracks for the purpose of live-baiting - a practice that is rampant in the greyhound racing industry in Australia, an inquiry has heard. Greyhound trainers have used rabbits, kittens, possums and piglets to “blood” young greyhounds and teach them to pursue moving lures on racetracks.

While live-baiting was exposed to the public in horrific detail by an ABC Four Corners report in February, the special commission of inquiry established as a result of that report says evidence will show that the practice is well-known and widely used.

Being seen to do what is right Stu Oldham

t is sad that such an obvious success story should be the root of such controversy and that the application of rules that apply to everyone should be the root of such discord.

But that is what happened when the Ashburton District Council told Figure Fitness it could not keep running its gym on Alford Forest Road without a resource consent. It now has three weeks to work through whatever process it needs to keep itself going.

Gym-goers – passionate Facebook posters – will be relieved a gym that became a community has time to find a way to keep operating, perhaps, from a new home. But some are disappointed in a process they say has been less than sympathetic to an enterprise that outgrew what might have been permitted.

They wonder how the council could have engaged the gym in February only for the impasse to continue. They wonder how much help the council has been to a local business, describing it as unsupportive and of lacking clear communication.

Some say it moved the goalposts; some even say the council has been aggressive.

These won’t be claims the council will want to let lay as it enforces rules that should apply to everyone, when the bare facts say it must. After all, the gym is a business in a residential zone.

It needs consent to be there; some neighbours mightn’t mind – but then, without going through the process, who knows?

We’d all prefer that the council was an enabler of business and that it would work as actively as it can with ratepayers to help then establish and continue their enterprises. Equally, all businesses – including our rates-paying gyms – will want the council to enforce, fairly, the rules.

Figure Fitness’ clients have urged the council to do right by a business that has changed many lives. The council must now be seen to do right as it does what the rules say it must do.

YOUR VIEW Family struggles I really get sad when I read yet again about the struggles of mums and their children (Nowhere to sleep for mum, kids, September 28).

My first reaction has always been: where is the dad? My heart goes out to those individuals within the various organisations doing their best to help them, I salute you all.

What I want is to live in a society where boys are taught that the best thing you can do for their children is to love their mother. I want to live in a society where fathers teach their sons how to respect and treat women and to teach and show their daughters how they deserve to be treated.

I want to live in a society where men stick by their partners and look after her and their children. No excuses. But that’s just me, anyone got any other suggestions?

However, will this guidance actually do anything for encouraging farmers in the right direction? Maybe for some, not for others.

Here’s the issue; I’m a farmer who has high usage and I have a neighbour who is the same. I reduce stocking rate to lessen PKE use and help with the marketing image, or the quality control issues, my neighbour however does nothing.

If the positive image continues then yay I get a pat on the back for upholding the industry’s image and premium price.

My neighbour meanwhile gets to make more milk and benefit from that premium price too. Still, if there are too many like my neighbour and our reputation and premium takes a hit, then I take the hit in

price along with my neighbour, though they still get to produce more milk.

We are relying on everyone to think about the greater good and ignore the individual benefits from going against that greater good.

Now if the issue is about quality like say somatic cells, then again Fonterra’s “guidance” has the same problems, those that listen to it, get no extra and will again end up paying for those that don’t.

So if we want change then let’s show that desire with a price signal.

Other companies such Synlait have such an approach. For me, if Fonterra are concerned by PKE use and other such factors, then providing that price signal is important.

So for consumer perception the price signal could take the

form of some sort of bonus.

In terms of quality issues then it needs to be treated just like somatic cells for example.

I would have handled this PKE issue differently with an upfront discussion with all industry players first, then raised the issue on the director’s roadshow, and got rid of the bloody spin.

If the issue is milk composition then say so and we can start a discussion around how this would be tested and what the demerit system would look like.

If it is truly about consumer perception, then again discuss with farmers and get their feedback on what’s the best way to tackle it.

The intent from Fonterra is likely correct, the execution and communication with farmers is sadly lacking.

onterra advice regarding Palm Kernel Extract (PKE) use has caused a stir amongst farmers throughout the country.

I was at the World Dairy Summit in Lithuania when this surfaced; still, despite being half a world away, I see Fonterra’s guidance went down like a lead balloon.

Once again Fonterra’s communications have let them down, the initial media release was lacking in detail, before the story predictably began to change.

Initially the talk was about customer perception, but then we start hearing about composition issues.

So now we have a confused message out there; is it about customer perception or manufacturing suitability?

In my view either of these issues are justifiable reasons for Fonterra to come back to farmers and inform us there is an issue to address. But they need to be upfront as to what the actual situation is.

There’s reasons why we should be informed and why we should take action. On farm is the first stage of the food chain that delivers a source of nutrition to the end consumer.

We need to have a clear and unambiguous knowledge of what exactly the consumer wants.

We need to also ensure they get the experience they want, and if there are quality factors, we need to understand those too.

The vast bulk of that customer experience is due to what happens on farm and so we should make sure that what happens on farm is in line with what the market wants.

If we ignore what the customer wants, they will duly switch to others who can cater for their tastes. So if their truly

Merger risks creating ‘beached whale’

BY JONATHAN UNDERHILL Alliance Group chairman Murray Taggart says any merger with Silver Fern Farms risks creating a “big beached whale” of the New Zealand meat industry because its rival needs the capital offered by China’s Bright Food just to rationalise plant capacity and reduce its debt burden.

Bright Foods’ Shanghai Maling Aquarius unit has offered to invest $261 million cash in Silver Fern Farms (SFF) to become a 50-50 partner with the Dunedin-based meat company in a deal that would leave the business debt free and with funds to upgrade plants, spend more marketing higher-value meat products and provide a new route into China.

The injection of funds has stoked speculation a stronger SFF could subsequently dictate terms for a tie-up with Alliance, something the two firms have

failed to achieve in a decade of sporadic talks. Alliance says it made an offer to SFF prior to the rival embarking on its capital-raising process and had “worked hard to engage with SFF and discuss opportunities for industry consolidation” over the past 10 years.

SFF has called the Chinese deal an industry game changer and sector consultant Keith Woodford says it would leave Alliance more vulnerable, with its own surplus capacity in sheep meat. But Taggart says Alliance has already made progress upgrading and rationalising capacity, such as mothballing its Sockburn site in Christchurch and closing its sheep meat operation at Mataura while upgrading its beef lines to serve a catchment marked by dairy conversions. By contrast, SFF has more work to do in trimming capacity, he said.

It also requires clearance from the Overseas Investment Office, whose recommendation that Shanghai Pengxin’s $88 million purchase of the 13,843 hectare Lochinver Station be approved was rejected by the Government on the grounds that it didn’t provide enough economic benefit to New Zealand Federated Farmers president William Rolleston said the two deals aren’t directly comparable because Shanghai Maling is buying into just one player in the processing industry, rather than building up farming capacity.

“If they aggregated a significant amount of land to supply into SFF then that message is there. But we’re not at that stage,” he said.

The pro-merger lobby of farmer shareholders at both meat companies backed a merger “to try to achieve a step change in competitive position, but we’d still be a pip-squeak in the global market, and in New Zealand could be the big beached whale of the industry,” he said.

SFF has some 22 meat processing plants to Alliance’s eight sites, but by Alliance’s estimate is killing only a third more stock, “meaning they are carrying a heap more overhead per kill than we are,” Taggart said.

Repaying debt was only one issue for its rival, he said.

SFF lifted sales by 16 per cent to $2.28 billion last year, but finance costs of $37.5 million contributed to a small net profit of $474,000, compared to a loss of $28.6 million a year earlier.

New Zealand employment confidence turned pessimistic in the third quarter, falling to a threeyear low, with fewer workers expecting a pay rise in a labour market where more people are looking for a job.

The Westpac McDermott Miller Employment Confidence Index fell to to 99.3 in the September quarter, from 102.8 three months earlier. The present conditions index slipped to 92.9 from 96.1 and the employment expectations index dropped to 103.6 from 107.3.

Across 11 regions, seven recorded a decline in employment confidence, with the gloomiest sentiment in Northland, which became slightly less pessimistic in the third quarter at 91.6 compared to 90.2 three months earlier. In Auckland, confidence dropped to 100.7 from 107.8, holding just above the 100 level that separates optimists from pessimists. Waikato’s confidence fell to 96 from 96.7.

Canterbury was the biggest bright spot, with confidence rising to 108.5 from 106.3, while Nelson/Marlborough/Westland became optimistic with a reading of 100.3 from 99.4.

Net investment revenue soared almost seven-fold to $681 million in the year, including a $379 million gain from foreign exchange positions, compared to a loss of $198 million in 2015.

The gain on currency trading means the Reserve Bank lifted its distribution to the Government to $510 million from a more modest $20 million return in 2014.

The central bank sold a net $554 million of New Zealand dollars in the 12 months ended June 30, a period when the trade-weighted index dropped 12.3 per cent and covering a period when it intervened in FX markets, selling currency to try and push it lower.

That’s the biggest return to the Government since 2009 when the central bank paid $630 million.

Beef exports reach record high Beef exports have hit $3 billion – a record high, driven by international shortages, rising local production, and a falling New Zealand dollar, Statistics NZ said.

Beef exports continued to rise, up 46 per cent ($61 million) in August 2015 compared with the same month last year. The beef export season runs from October 1 to September 30.

“With one month to go in the 2014/15 beef export season, beef exports are at a new high of $3 billion,” international statistics senior manager Jason Attewell said in a statement.

“So far this season, 404,000 tonnes of beef have been exported, and if we ex-

The United States remained New Zealand’s top beef export destination this season, for both value and quantity.

Beef export values to the US have hit a record high of $1.6 billion (up 64 percent) for the season to date, with quantities up 21 percent compared with this time last year.

Beef export values to China continued to increase, up 88 per cent for the season to date, to $394 million, with quantities up 52 per cent compared with this time last year.

MARKET REPORT Dairy A week of rainy conditions and cooler temperatures has slowed growth rates, delayed the spring pasture surge and made many of the region’s farms tight for feed.

The moisture was welcome on the drought-ravaged areas in North Canterbury but while paddocks are green, they are still struggling to support even the much reduced stocking rates presently carried.

Deer Some more lifts in venison schedules this week but signs prices may be peaking as levels are now $50 per animal ahead of last year and reaching values sure to encourage reinvestment in females.

There is about six more weeks of chilled production to come and the skills of autumn and winter feeding management will be returned with numbers of yearling deer at target weights available for slaughter this spring.

World wheat yield record inches up

A British farming family is believed to have cracked the world record for wheat yield, snatched from New Zealand by another UK farmer August.

But at least two New Zealand farmers have their sights on reclaiming the honour.

Northumberland farmers James, Rod and Vicky Smith inched over the 16.5 tonne per hectare record set by Tim Lamyman, from Lincolnshire, with a yield of 16.52t/ha.

Mr Lamyman took the record from Southland farmer Mike Solari, whose 2010 crop of Einstein feed wheat yielded 15.63t/ ha.

Mr Lamyman did not apply for official recognition, however, the Smiths’ have sent the records of the harvest to the Guinness Book of World Records.

The record-busting crop was the high-yielding Dickens variety, grown from the farm’s strictly commercial seed crop growing regime.

From the 11.259ha field, mapped by GPS on the day, the Beal Farm team harvested a total of 191.40t of Dickens at an average 17.4 per cent moisture on September 1, giving a 15 per cent moisture-adjusted yield of 16.519t/ha.

The Smiths worked alongside Agrii agronomists to get the result.

The crop was sown after beans in the third week of last September, later than preferred in the farm’s heavy ground.

Mr Solaris will attempt to wrestle the record back this season and had heard of a farmer in the Temuka district who also had his sights on producing the top yield.

New Zealand Grain and Seed Trade Association (NZGSTA) chairman Thomas Chin said it is entirely possible a Kiwi farmer could reclaim the record,

with a goal of 20t/ha by 2020.

“Is there a way to snaffle the record back? Absolutely!” he said.

“English-sourced wheat and barley cultivars have delivered exceptional yields in New Zealand, because the growing conditions are very similar.”

And there’s no reason the next world record could not be set in Mid Canterbury.

“Mid Canterbury has a number of strategic national advantages, such as high solar radiation and fertile soils, combined with good irrigation infrastructure which enables high yielding cultivars to perform well,” Mr Chin said.

“But the X factor in all this is farmer agronomy and practice – the way the crop is grown is intrinsic to the high yields which can be extracted.

“There’s seed genetics and breeders know through trials what a particular cultivar will produce, but it’s down to the farmer or grower to realise that, and maybe exceed it.

“In a drought year yields could be impacted, but there’s absolutely no doubt in my mind that the record is up for grabs again and could be taken by a New Zealand grower – on the basis that we’ve previously held both the wheat and the barley records.”

Unmanned helicopters could become a new tool in Mid Canterbury arable farmers’ arsenal.

The Yamaha RMAX helicopters will enable crop management from the air, able to spray, spread seed and fertilise with precision accuracy, Yamaha Sky

Division’s general manager Darryl Lovegrove said.

Weighing in at 99kg and at a total length of 3.63m and a height of 1.08m, each helicopter has a load capacity of 28kgs and runs on a two-stroke, two-cylinder engine.

It has the capacity cover almost a hectare in six minutes.

New Zealand Honey International, the closely-held honey products maker, wants a judicial declaration on whether its trademarks Manuka Doctor and Manuka Pharm amount to health claims after the Ministry of Primary Industries withdrew export approvals, blocking the firm’s sales into certain markets.

MPI has been cracking down on the manuka honey industry amid international criticism there was more manuka honey coming out of the country than New Zealand actually produces.

With no industry consensus on what constitutes manuka honey, MPI introduced an interim labelling guideline in July 2014 to give the industry clarity and protect consumers from false claims, as well as to try to improve credibility of the ma-

nuka products. The regulator cancelled NZ Honey’s export assurance in May, saying the company’s brand names Manuka Doctor and Manuka Pharm breached food labelling standards.

Appearing at the High Court in Wellington before Justice Simon France, NZ Honey counsel Andrew Brown QC said the company hasn’t been able to export manuka products since May 22 because of the lack of an export certificate, including $500,000 in manuka honey waiting to be shipped to Thailand, Japan and China.

Asian demand for manuka honey has seen the price for all New Zealand honey increase, amid a global honey shortage.

The trademarks didn’t make specific or identifiable claims as listed in the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code, and

were to identify the source of the product rather than speak to their health benefits, Brown said.

When asked whether there wasn’t a vague suggestion that the use of doctor or ‘pharm’, shortened for pharmacy, didn’t imply “it’s good for you”, Brown said consumers were used to “that sort of puffery”. Because there was no direct or specific claim it couldn’t fall under what the food standards code defines as a claim, he said.

Appearing for MPI, Rachael Schmidt-McCleave said consumers were aware of the premium they paid for manuka honey, and that branding was important to inform that understanding. Doctor implied the “healing powers of a physician” while pharm associated it with a pharmacy, where a consumer goes to get medicine or drugs, she said.

Saving a grandmother

O

ne of my treasures is a large oak frame with a coloured photograph of my adored grandmother.

Taken before she was married, it shows a face that, although unfamiliar, grew into someone who meant the world to me.

I’m lucky to have it, as when I was very young an antique dealer come around looking for “old stuff ” to buy. Among the pile of jardinières and knickknacks my grandmother offered him I noticed the frame with her portrait in it. Even as a youngster I was upset she would sell it and retrieved it.

Sadly, many portraits of longforgotten family members suffer the fate my grandmother’s image almost had. While some people who purchase such items may keep the image, most only want the frame and discard the image.

What to do with the unwanted photo is a problem, as without any details about who it was, where it was taken etc it is rather useless.

But please, just please, don’t throw it out, as it could be someone’s grandmother.

A local museum may accept it, as it might be able to be used for information on clothing styles or maybe just as a display object.

If, however, it has any information on it, especially a location, or a name, you may wish to do a little bit of detective work and locate next of kin, or the museum for the area from whence it came.

People who do this can only be worthy of the best karma in my book.

Such a person was a woman, who, while passing an Auckland rubbish skip, came across the certificate pictured.

Her daughter-in-law was given the task of looking after it and finding it a good home.

After not finding much information on the certificate, the lady contacted the Ashburton Guardian and after an article resulted in no response we

... why someone in Auckland decided to throw out this piece of their history we will never know

obtained the certificate – so the story has a happy ending.

But is that the end of the story?

A quick flick around a few sites and an examination of our records has transformed this unwanted certificate into a valuable piece of local history.

Freda Thistle McRae was born in Staveley to Guy (also known as Stewart) and Marie

McRae in 1899.

She studied at Ashburton Hospital, gaining her certificate in 1924.

In 1928 she married Michael Duggan and, at some stage she moved to the North Island. She died in Napier in 1982, where she is buried.

While Freda moved to the North Island, her parents remained here in Ashburton.

Freda’s mother died at the residence of the Springburn stationmaster in 1905 and Guy died in 1938. Both are buried in Mount Somers.

It appears that Marie and Guy only had two children – Freda and a son, Tyndall, who died aged 15 in 1916.

In brief De Jong falls on sword A senior New Zealand football official has resigned in response to the disqualification of the country’s under-23 team from an Olympic qualifying tournament for fielding an ineligible player. High Performance Director Fred de Jong said yesterday that he accepted responsibility for the “issues of eligibility” at the Oceania Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Papua in New Guinea in July, despite the fact Football New Zealand is legally challenging the disqualification.

New Zealand’s under-23 team was disqualified from the tournament hours before the final.

Top finishes light up first round The Tinwald Cycling Club kicked the season off with a graded scratch event around the Christys Road block on Sunday.

Almost 70 riders across all grades took to their bikes in fine spring weather and were rewarded with some close, exciting racing.

Senior A and B grade riders contested a 36km course, and Timaru visitor Chris Karton sprinted the strongest to secure A grade honours in style from Alex Hooper and

Michael Templeton.

Grade B also saw a grandstand finish with Christchurch rider Terry Gyde having the final say on the line to edge out Kristine Marriott and Paul Macfie.

Grades C and D battled over 27km and Don Sutton (45.16mins) pulled out a big finish in a bunch sprint to claim the major spoils in C grade.

Grant Paine stormed to second place with Doug Coley digging deep to secure the final podium position.

Matt Ellis opened his season with a good victory in D grade, holding out Colin Teahan in a tight finish, with John Harcourt charging in to third place.

The juniors also contested a graded scratch event with the A grade competing over 18km and the B graders riding 9km.

Abe O’Donnell (30.37secs) continued where he left off last season with a good win in A grade, but not before a tight battle with the ever improving Caitlin Titheridge, who claimed second place while

Bella Roulston fought strongly to take third.

Matheson Colquhoun performed well to take a B grade victory in a sprint finish with Maddison Clark, while Susie Leech held out her brother Dylan to secure third place.

Shona Proctor saw off the challengers in the 18km division two event to take the win from Janette Hooper and Andy Skinner.

Next week the club travels to Wakanui to contest a 32km handicap event.

Rebels first to face Japanese Super side

By Melissa Woods The Melbourne Rebels will be the first Australian team to play against a new side from Japan in next year’s expanded Super Rugby competition.

Yet-to-be-named teams from Japan and Argentina as well as a sixth side from South Africa, the Kings, have joined the 18team competition.

It will now be divided into four conferences - with one in Australia, one in New Zealand

and two in South Africa.

Australian teams will play six matches in their conference, five in New Zealand’s and four in one of the two South African conferences, of which the Japanese outfit is in one and Argentina is in the other.

Because Australian teams have been drawn to play in the South African conference that includes the Japanese side, they will not play the Argentinian team next season.

There will also be an ex-

panded eight-team finals series made up of seven matches.

Just a month ago there was concern about Japan’s ability to field a team due to to a standoff between the national organisation and clubs over player payments, however SANZAR confirmed their entry.

The Rebels travel to Tokyo in round four in March, although the Japanese franchise is still to reveal how many of their national team, who recently upset South Africa in the World Cup,

will take part. They and Argentina will reveal details of their franchises after the World Cup, although Japan confirmed they will split their games between Tokyo and Singapore.

Australia’s best teams, the Waratahs and Brumbies, face tough opening matches.

The Brumbies take on last year’s losing finalists the Hurricanes in Canberra on February 26, while the Waratahs host old foes the Reds a day later.

Group A Australia/Wales Yes, England to slide out of their own tournament: ie Australia will win all of its matches - the Wallabies have enough petrol in the tank to beat a confused, under-pressure England at Twickers on Sunday.

Welsh momentum will trump Fiji in Cardiff on Friday, although don’t write Fiji off. So the Welsh rearguard win over England will get them through at the expense of the hosts.

Group B South Africa/Scotland South Africa have picked themselves up - and with all due respect to a great player, Jean de Villiers won’t be missed with Jesse Kriel and Damian de Allende reunited in the midfield.

Samoa’s intent is good, but their organisation was found wanting against South Africa so we’re picking the Jocks to beat Samoa in Newcastle.

Group C NZ/Argentina Already a foregone conclusion ... sorry Tonga. Argentina are dark horses in this World Cup with strong semi-final potential - they would be decent chances against Ireland or their long time bunnies France in the quarters. The big question is whether a soft group will leave the All Blacks - who were amazingly unconvincing against the lowly part-amateurs Namibia under-prepared for the quarterfinals.

Group D Ireland/France So long as Ireland don’t get ahead of themselves they will dispense with Italy in London on Monday.

That means the finishing order rests on the final clash between France and Ireland in Cardiff. In a sudden death match, we might pick France.

But Joe Schmidt’s clinical coaching of Ireland should win the day - France are more dangerous when everything is on the line.

Quade Cooper has been left disappointed by his sin-binning in the Wallabies’ World Cup win over Uruguay, with coach Michael Cheika confirming an appeal would be lodged. The 27-year-old was sent to the sin-bin for tackling Uruguayan No.9 Agustin Ormaechea high and then bodyslamming him. It is Cooper’s third yellow card in his past four tests.

All three offences have been high tackles, perhaps suggesting a need to refine his technique.

It is thought that Scott Williams and Amos are already in doubt for the remainder of the tournament, compounding the loss of Leigh Halfpenny, Rhys Webb and Cory Allen who have already been ruled out.

The tennis season is upon us and Sam Bubb has started with a bang by winning the 14-16 year boys’ singles and doubles titles at the Otago Junior Spring Open in Dunedin.

The open was held over Saturday and Sunday, with 129

matches played in all at the Edgar Centre and Logan Park.

Bubb, who turned 14 on the opening day of the tournament, partnered with Timaru’s Josh Cameron to win the doubles title, before securing a place in the singles final with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Cameron.

The Ashburton College stu-

dent produced another convincing performance in the singles final with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Wanaka’s Jake Nicholson.

Bubb said his 5am training sessions at the regional programme in Christchurch and practices with Mid Canterbury coach Chris Anderson were paying off.

“I felt quite relieved because I know that there was some hard matches and good players to play against,” he said.

“It was just that on the day, I was playing a bit better, so I felt quite happy with myself and all the work that I put in paid off.”

Bubb will now turn his atten-

tion to competing in Christchurch and Blenheim over the next two weekends while 39 Mid Canterbury players will compete at the South Canterbury Spring Open in Timaru today, before local action returns with Twilight Tennis tomorrow and Sunset Doubles on Thursday.
