The sun shone, the crowds came and when the gates shut on this year’s Ashburton A&P Show, president David Butterick couldn’t stop smiling.

On Sunday, the annual show might have been over, but for Butterick and his team there was still plenty of work to be done – clearing up and stacking away the hundreds of items that are part of show day.

It had been a big lead-in to the two-day show, but a president couldn’t have wished for anything better than heavy rain the day before the gates opened and sunshine during the show itself.

It was as close to perfect as a show could get.

Numbers might have been down a bit on Friday, but the huge crowds on Saturday more than made up for that, he said.

“People really seemed to enjoy the day and they all seemed pretty happy.”

Entries in many sections were up and in others on par with last year.

The two-day show ran like clockwork and that was all due to the great team of convenors and their helpers, Butterick said.

This year’s show’s theme was Irrigation – the lifeblood of Mid Canterbury, and it was impressive the way some of the trade stands had taken that on board.

The displays by the district’s irrigation companies was also appreciated as it showed the benefits of irrigation to the district’s economy, he said.

“My committee is already trying to wrangle out of me what the theme will be for next year, but I’m not saying anything – yet.”

Scholarship makes Diana’s study easier

The financial burden of Diana Barbu’s first year’s study at Otago university has been eased, thanks to a new scholarship developed by Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon.

The scholarship is about encouraging local students to undertake courses of study that will equip them with the skills that are needed to keep the Ashburton District growing, Falloon said.

“There are four areas where our economy needs more skilled graduates – science, technology, engineering and mathematics and they cost far more than courses such as arts and accounting.”

When National was in government it focused on making the subjects, collectively known as STEM more affordable. That had changed with a change of government and the introduction of a free year of study regardless of subject.

The cost of that had been $2.8 million but the investment had yet to translate into more students, he said.

“I decided to create a local STEM scholarship to try and encourage a few more students in the area to

consider one of these important subjects.”

Falloon has raised $1200 by selling raffle tickets over the past year and topped this up with $300 to create the $1500 scholarship.

“We’ve done this thanks to people opening their wallets,” he said.

And that money will make a huge difference next year, Barbu said.

The Year 13 Ashburton College student will study first year health science and then hopes to study bio-medical science. She’s planning a career in medical research.

“I want to do something where I can make a difference, or at least try to make a difference,” she said.

Barbu recently spent represented New Zealand at the XLab International Science Camp in Germany with some of her time spent focussing on neurobiology.

Her application was one of 57 received from the Rangitata electorate. Falloon narrowed these to a short list of five, three from Mid Canterbury and two from South Canterbury.

“The quality was incredibly high but Diana stood out,” he said.

The scholarship will be awarded annually.

Over the two days Butterick said he walked the grounds many

times, talking to competitors, judges and show goers and they all seemed pretty happy with the way things were running.

Having agriculture minister Damien O’Connor spend several hours at the show on Friday had been a bonus and it was good to see him mixing and talking with

farmers and people manning trades stands, Butterick said.

“He really seemed to enjoy what we had on display.”

As the clean up wrapped up yesterday, the grounds appeared to be in pretty good shape considering the heavy rainfall one day out from the show opening,

he said. “There’s a few tracks we might need to remediate but we’ll get it back to being rugby-ready by next year.”

For Butterick and his team there will only be a week or two post show before they hold a debrief and then the planning starts for next year’s event.

A paralysed soldier who has twice been refused compensation for his injury has won a top award at the Invictus Games in Sydney.

George Nepata was paralysed when he was dropped headfirst by soldiers carrying him up a slope on a stretcher during a training exercise in Singapore in 1989, leaving him a tetraplegic.

Team-mates at the Invictus Games broke into a spontaneous haka when he was honoured with an “Exceptional Performance of the Games” award in front of Prince Harry at the game’s closing ceremony in Sydney on Saturday night.

Nepata and other NZ team members flew home to New Zealand with the prince and the Duchess of Sussex yesterday.

Nepata’s brother Damien Nepata was also injured in the army, suffering burns to 40 per cent of his body when the Scorpion tank he was driving rolled and caught fire during training at Waiouru army camp in July 1994.

Parliamentary select committees recommended in 2003 and again in 2013 that the brothers should be paid compensation, but both times successive Labour and National Cabinets refused to compensate them because it would have set a precedent.

The Defence Minister in 2013 Dr Jonathan Coleman said he had “huge sympathy” for the brothers but their cases “could not be distinguished from those of numerous other soldiers who had been injured”. They received accident compensation and Defence Force benefits.

The Defence Force said Nepata’s award “recognised his tremendous contribution to the NZDF’s wheelchair rugby team, as the only team member fully dependent on a wheelchair he had to play all five games”. - NZME

Crowds flock to Diwali celebrations

Ashburton became a small slice of India on Saturday when hundreds of people gathered to celebrate the annual Hindu Festival of Lights, Diwali.

The district’s Indian community has been holding the celebration in Ashburton for the past eight years and every year the numbers attending grow, said one of the organisers, Priti Pratap.

“We had an amazing turnout this year with lots of visitors, they came from all over the place.”

Those visitors included

Manakau East MP Kanwalijit Singh Bakshi and Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon and visitors from Indian communities around Canterbury. As well as traditional ceremonies, Ashburton’s Diwali celebration included entertainment and one group that won the hearts of those attending was from Allenton School.

“Kiwi and Indian children performed a dance and this was amazing,” Pratap said.

This year the celebration was held in the Ashburton Trust Event Centre to cater to the larger numbers but this venue couldn’t have

been used without the support of so many sponsors, she said.

“One of the things that was really exciting this year was that so many Kiwis came along dressed in Indian costumes. It is wonderful that people are recognising and

enjoying our culture.”

The growing numbers of Kiwis who were now attending Diwali celebrations was very exciting for the Indian community to see, Pratap said.

Food is always a major feature

of Diwali and Ashburton’s Indian Minar restaurant provided a wonderful meal for guests, she said.

Diwali symbolises the spiritual “victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance”.

Year 13 like one big family

One by one, 15 tired, stressed, but happy students stumble into the cafe.

Joining them is their teacher, mentor and friend who is also tired and stressed. Immediately however, conversation was struck up and a whole hour was whiled away over breakfast.

This was the last proper meeting of the Ashburton College Student Exec for this year.

2018 has been a rollercoaster of a year, with seemingly more ups than downs and I personally attribute my amazing experience of this year to the 2018 Year 13 class, a year group which has become like a massive family to one another.

For me personally, I have found that within this year’s Year 13 class, there is a general feel that anyone can talk to anyone, there is always support if it’s needed and there is a motivated feeling of “let’s do this”.

At the beginning of the school year, I was finishing up on a two and a half month cultural exchange in Germany. My peers had already completed two weeks of school by the time I returned and, to be honest with you, I was bloody nervous.

How was I supposed to step up and be a senior leader in school, when I had not even been in the country for 10 weeks?

My fears however, were put to rest the second I stepped foot on school grounds as I walked back into a group of mates who were happy, supportive and ready to tackle the year.

Now, with only three days of school left, it’s

clear to see that this year’s leavers group have truly made 2018 one to remember.

A massive shoutout must be given to this year’s house captains and house execs, on whose shoulders the entire house competition stands.

Striving to win the House Cup is an essential part of of Ashburton College life, a part which creates lasting memories and develops leadership and teamwork skills. The house leadership teams have invested so many hours into making this year memorable and enjoyable and that is exactly what they set out to do. The other team of troopers which must also be mentioned is that group of 15 tired and stressed students I mentioned at the start; the student executive.

From dreaming up amazing initiatives such as shared morning tea, to organising an extremely successful quizco, from running various social media outlets, to making the Ashburton College Ball the amazing night it was, this year’s Student Executive have invested hundreds of volunteer hours into the students of Ashburton College.

Every 8am meeting on a Tuesday has had an atmosphere of motivation and enthusiasm and that, for me personally, has been a massive privilege to experience.

Finally, I have to mention the year group as a whole, the class of 2018, who have managed to survive five long years together.

Everyone will have their own memories and things they remember from their time at Ashburton College, but I personally will remember the what a cracker of a year it has been with this group of highly motivated, supportive and fun loving Year 13s. Cheers guys!

In brief Two arrested Two men have been arrested after six men were attacked in Greymouth, leaving one of them with serious injuries. The victims were taken to hospital, one with serious injuries. The two alleged offenders were found by police.

The men, aged 18 and 19, have been charged with assault with intent to injure. They are scheduled to appear in Christchurch District Court today.

Chemical incident A man has been taken to hospital after being injured in a chemical incident in Canterbury yesterday.

Emergency services were called to a house in Rolleston. A St John spokesman said just before 2pm that medical staff were at the scene, as were Fire and Emergency staff. The spokesman said the exact cause of the man’s injuries are not yet known. However, a St John spokesman later said a 66-year-old male was transported to hospital after he got chlorine in his face and eyes.

■ AUCKLAND MARATHON

Six people in hospital A drizzly start to Sunday morning did little to deter more than 15,000 runners taking part in the 2018 Auckland Marathon yesterday.

But for some, the physical strain was too great as six competitors were hospitalised, three in serious condition.

The iconic event brought together veteran athletes, first-timers and hundredth timers from all walks of life, with the track spanning across the North Shore through to Auckland city.

Things kicked off at 6am as the sun rose over the hundreds of runners competing in the 42.195km journey.

Australian man David Criniti crossed the finish line first for the full marathon with a time of 2 hours 24 minutes and 6 sec-

onds, with Daniel Jones coming in second, 2:24:43 and Isiais Beyn finishing third, 2:25:06.

The conditions started off wet with drizzle coming through from 4am before easing around 8am when conditions became fine reaching a high of 17 degrees.

Six competitors were hospitalised during the marathon, organisers said.

Three of the patients were in a serious condition, St John said.

The wheelchair pilot class, comprised of around 12 racers in wheelchairs or recumbent bikes, kicked off five minutes before the official start of the full marathon.

Brendon Stratton claimed first with a time of 1 hour 32 minutes and 17 seconds for the full marathon.

Debt collecting (yeah right). Seriously I enjoy the office banter and talking to clients at the counter.

Born and bred in Temuka and transferred to Ashburton in the early ‘80s through work.

Worked for South Canterbury Wine and Spirit Company before starting at Dalgetys. After numerous mergers and lots of name changes left the company after 31 years service which by this time was named PGG Wrightson.

What exciting experiences have you enjoyed while working in your role?

In the old days playing inter-branch cricket matches with celebrations going into the small hours of the next day. Also meeting a lot of great people, both staff and customers.

Have there been any embarrassing moments in your working career?

Walking in on the editor at the time when he was sitting on the toilet and coming out of a petrol station and trying to get into the wrong car.

Floral display impresses judge

When it comes to flowers, Margaret Horrell has a store of knowledge that would be hard to beat.

She’s well known in floral art circles, in floral competitions and around the A&P show circuit where she’s earned herself a solid reputation as a judge.

And on Friday she used her skills and experience to separate the winners from the rest at the Ashburton show.

Every time she pins a judge’s ribbon on her chest, Horrell said she knows it will be an opportunity to learn something new.

“The more you think you know the more you find you get to know something new. People use so many different flowers and arrange these in so many different styles,” she said.

While she has many years experience in tutoring and judging, Horrell said she always approaches every show day with a fresh and open mind.

“There’s so much overseas material and designs we have access to now in New Zealand, it’s amazing what people come up with.”

Her rural home in Cheviot is

surrounded by a large farm garden, but creating good floral art is about more than having access to a wide variety of flowers, Horrell said.

“I do a lot of demonstrations to help people to understand how to put flowers together. People think they have nothing in their gardens but it’s amazing what you can put together.”

She’s an artist by season and with a garden full of spring flowers, hand-held posies are her current favourites and that demonstrates that you don’t need a lot of flowers in a large bunch to have impact, she said.

“I’m a bit of a magpie, I collect all kinds of flowers in my garden but at the moment I’m moving towards foliage, and things that will last.”

And gardening in Cheviot does come with its challenges, not the least of which is severe summer droughts.

She was impressed by both the variety and quality of blooms and floral arrangements on Ashburton’s show bench and while she was required to judge everything from single flowers to complex arrangements, a solid bank of experience is great to call on, she said.

■ ROYAL TOUR

Fans turn out to see royal couple in capital Of all the signs that could have had a chance at catching Prince Harry’s eye, it was one being held up by a little boy with red hair – also named Harry.

Harry Smith was among the legions of fans who turned out on a sunny Wellington day to catch a glimpse of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan.

The 7-year-old from Paraparaumu, wearing a sparkly blue bow tie, was spotted holding up a hand-made sign reading: “Hi Harry, I’m Harry.”

Up to 2000 people gathered behind barriers put up outside the Pukeahu National War Memorial – the royal couple’s only public appearance scheduled in Wellington.

Dignitaries, including mayor Justin Lester, arrived shortly before the Duke and Duchess, who later placed a wreath of fern fronds on the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior.

People crammed against the cordons as they waited; a real sense of excitement building.

Some of the fans wore cardboard Burger King crowns on their heads, while others waved small paper flags.

Ivan Andrews and his friends held a large banner that said: “Honour the dead – no more wars”.

Excited chatter rose after a quick trumpet blast blew and people with babies and small children lifted them high above the crowd.

Cellphones shot up and cameras were poised to snatch a picture of Harry and Meghan when they arrived.

Later, after the royal couple had been and gone, children who were among the lucky ones to speak to the Duke and Duchess said they were asked what sports they played.

They listed them off: Cricket, rugby, hockey, netball and basketball.

A group who had travelled down from Kairanga School, in Palmerston North, said Meghan said she was really cold.

Nate Kearins, 13, said he asked Prince Harry if he knew who NZ pro basketballer Steven Adams was and he had no idea and clearly didn’t know much about basketball.

Another young fan, 11-year-old Minnie Newman, of Kelburn Girl Guides, said the couple asked what the best thing was about Guides and she replied that she got to do lots of amazing activities.

“I love her dress and she was really pretty,” Minnie said of Meghan.

“She seems really nice and kind and would be good for royalty.”

Greta Crowe, 11, said she answered that the best part of Guides was getting to meet them.

Prince Harry responded: “What?

Waiting around at Government House in the cold?” The couple shared a laugh at that.

Meghan’s gown goes on display

■ Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, has described how she worked with designer Clare Waight Keller of Givenchy to create a “timeless” wedding gown for her wedding to Prince Harry earlier this year.

Harry and the former Meghan Markle recorded their memories of the wedding for an audio commentary that is part of the new Relive the Royal Wedding exhibition at Windsor Castle that has just opened.

The gown and the five-metre-long veil Meghan wore with it are set to be the prime attraction at the 10-week display.

In the audio recording, the former actress said she had a clear idea of what she wanted to wear from the start.

“I knew at the onset I wanted a bateau neckline, I wanted a cropped sleeve, I wanted a very timeless, classic feeling,” she said.

The dress also needed to be suitably modest for the May 19 wedding held in a chapel on the grounds of Windsor Castle,

she said. “There was a great level of detail that went into the planning of our wedding day,” said Meghan, who is pregnant with the couple’s first child.

“I think for us, we knew how large the scale of the event would be, so in making choices that were really personal and meaningful, it could make the whole experience feel intimate, even though it was a very big wedding,” the duchess said.

Meghan described the “incredibly surreal day” when she and her fiance visited Queen Elizabeth II, Harry’s grandmother, to choose a tiara for her to wear during the wedding ceremony. She picked Queen Mary’s diamond and platinum bandeau tiara from the queen’s unmatched collection. It is featured in the new exhibit.

Harry’s wedding outfit, including the distinctive frockcoat uniform made by master tailors on Savile Row, is also on display.

Death-defying stunts coming to town Death-defying stunts and a magical adventure for children will be coming to the Ashburton Trust Event Centre this week.

Seven Deadly Stunts will feature real life married couple David Ladderman and Lizzie Tollemache, celebrating notorious stunts from carnival history, along with stories of how and why they exist.

Walking on broken glass, swallowing fire

and juggling a chainsaw are among tasks.

The performance will see the couple put their bodies on the line, not to mention their marriage, as they rely on trust and sheer bravado to get through without any major injuries. Seven Deadly Stunts will stage at 8pm, and be preceded by another show at 6pm the same night, Messy Magic Adventure. This will be for children of all ages, featuring the funny

characters of Spray and Wipe.

They are two cleaners, hired for their most exciting job ever, cleaning a magician’s house.

When Spray and Wipe accidentally let the magic out of its box, everything turns topsy turvy, and the magical adventure begins.

Both shows are open hat events, produced

Diversity the key to a show’s survival T

here’s teamwork and then there’s the large scale teamwork that’s needed to run a massive public event, one where virtually no one gets paid for their efforts.

And that’s how it is with Ashburton’s A&P Show. It’s one of the biggest events on the district’s calendar and the people power that’s needed to ensure it runs like clockwork is huge.

President David Butterick might be the face of the show, but he’s the first one to admit that behind him there are hundreds of people putting in hours of their own time to ensure the show goes off without a hitch.

It’s been that way since the first show 141 years ago.

There has to be a secret to an

event that is running up towards its century and a half of life. Few big public events make even a decade without falling out of public favour, so what’s so special about and our A&P show?

There are probably just two things – people and a willingness to change.

Shows are quintessentially rural New Zealand. They were established as a way to bring country folk together, to provide a little competitive edge to their

business as they vied for winners’ sashes.

Predictably the A&P show’s origins run back to England and Canterbury’s first show was held on the banks of the Rangitata River in 1859. Show mania took hold and by the 1950s there were more than 100 shows held annually in rural New Zealand.

Early shows were about farm animals and crops and they were designed to demonstrate excellence and to promote good breeding in stock. Later horse riding, shearing, machinery displays, domestic crafts, sideshows and entertainment were added. Most shows were run from grounds owned by A&P associations.

For many years shows changed very little. They were well estab-

lished as a meeting ground for town and country, a place where townies came to see what the country folk did.

They were picnic days out for families and a highlight on many social calendars.

But for many shows, time caught them in a tight noose.

Townies weren’t so keen to check out rural activities any more and while some of those A&P associations attempted to hang on to the past, eventually they ceased business.

Not so Ashburton. While its roots might have been in the past, successive presidents and committees have kept a careful eye on the future. They knew that if they didn’t mix up what they’d always done with something new, they

too could be consigned to history.

If ever there was an example of an A&P association successfully changing to meet changing consumer expectations, it’s Ashburton. This year’s show has just wrapped up and it was another winner. Huge entries, huge crowds and a huge team of volunteers who need a huge pat on the back.

Our show has kept the best of its past, it’s still absolutely rural in its focus but it also provides plenty for townies who might not give a jot about sheep, cattle and horses. Diversity has kept Ashburton’s show not only alive, but thriving.

Well done David Butterick and your team. You’ve just produced another winner.

Poor decisions affect the security of our energy supply I

imagine many of you will have used a gas bottle in the past week or so, whether it was to host a barbecue with family and friends over Labour Weekend, to cook dinner or to heat your water.

Some will have done all three of those things and most likely assume that you will continue to be able to do so for the foreseeable future.

However, industry experts have signalled that the country’s long-term gas supplies are in a precarious state, with just seven years’ firm supply and production forecast to start falling away from 2021.

Meanwhile the Government is rushing legislation through Parliament to put into effect the ban on new offshore oil and gas exploration that it announced in April.

In recent weeks Parliament’s environment select committee has been hearing submissions explaining just how much of a risk this ban is to our nation’s energy security.

One of the key messages coming through from submitters has been that the Government is incorrect in its apparent belief that existing exploration acreage will be sufficient to meet our gas supply needs as we transition to a net-zero economy by 2050.

New Zealand currently does very well in terms of renewable energy generation, with about 85 per cent of our electricity generated from renewable sources.

However, there are risks posed by variations in climate to our hydro and wind generation.

With our hydro lakes currently at low levels, access to gas is critical to cover generation needs during sustained dry periods if we want to avoid burning coal.

Genesis Energy has stated that

gas is a core part of the company’s strategy to end its use of coal by 2030.

Gas is one of the lowest-cost options for ensuring the reliable power supplies our country will need if we are going to replace fossil fuel use for transport and industry with electricity.

Industry experts have warned that trying to shut down gas, coal and fuel oil at the same time is a huge gamble that may cripple our economy given the cost of the new generation, distribution and transmission required.

The Government has been told by officials that the proposed ban is likely to cost the country billions of dollars in revenue and increase energy costs for households and businesses.

The most ironic thing however is that the ban has the potential to increase rather than reduce global emissions.

This is because if countries like New Zealand stop exploring for gas, higher emitting hydrocarbons such as Canadian tar sand or Venezuelan bitumen will

continue to be extracted.

Furthermore, without gas to supplement our wind and solar generation, New Zealand will either need to import coal from other countries or face electricity blackouts.

While I am sure the Government doesn’t like hearing that its flagship climate change policy will increase rather than reduce emissions it needs to listen and get real.

This policy has already halted investment in a number of sectors and if the Government continues to push ahead with its proposed ban despite the clear evidence that this is a bad idea, both our economy and our environment will be worse off.

After buying his grandfather’s 1933 International D1 in 1967, his abiding love-affair for big workhorses snow-balled.

This mammoth museum doesn’t just gleam and groan with trucks, but classic cars, Kombis, domestic machinery and all

manner of quirky gems.

There’s a vintage paddy-wagon from the Christchurch Police, circa 1925, retro paraphernalia by the truckload, vintage petrol bowsers, Invercargill’s first passenger bus, a vintage Foursquare truck and even the original yellow Mini from Goodbye Pork Pie. (I’m taking this bloody car to Invercargill!)

The fire engine-red Texaco tanker is another star turn. This 1940 Dodge Airflow water tanker was restored by Bill so spectacularly, that legend has it that American oil executives from Texaco visited Invercargill to offer a blank cheque to Bill for Tex the Tanker. Bill said “No deal”.

The Ford collection is deliriously good, including seven of the eight pre-Model T production cars lustily displayed, dating back to 1904, along with some fine Tin Lizzie (Model T) specimens.

Bill died in 2005 but his daughter, Jocelyn, took up the reins, and it remains a beloved family owned and operated going concern, with ever-expanding collections.

You could easily wile away half a day within this gob-smacking storehouse of collectibles, which are so impeccably displayed.

Be sure to check out the wondrously-themed bathrooms, particularly the petrol pump replica handbasins.

In the gents bathroom, you stand in front of a gleaming window overlooking the gathered crowds in the showroom floor. It’s one-way glass, I was assured.

You can further your engine fix at their sister exhibition, Classic Motorcycle Mecca, which sports an equally museum-worthy lineup of two-wheelers.

Spread across two floors, the classic motorbike displays range from a 1902 Peugeot motorcycle to a 21st century Simms Corbin Custom, plus plenty of John Britten motorbikes.

Just under a year ago, Transport World also opened New Zealand’s first heavy equipment playground. You can let rip and have a go driving heavy machinery, including bulldozers, excavators and skid steers in a giant gravel pit.

For a complete change of scenery, I headed to the Southland Museum and Art Gallery, where the runaway highlight is their tuatarium.

Home to about 100 of these worldly reptiles, spanning the age spectrum, the star of the show is the great patriarch, Henry. He’s roughly 120 years old, but doesn’t look a day over 20.

Henry holds the world record for

living in captivity. Forty-six years and counting. You may recall, on his last visit to New Zealand three years ago, Prince Harry met his reptilian namesake.

For a memorable taste-sensation, hot foot it to Jane Stanton’s Seriously Good Chocolate Company, in Spey Street. Her flavour range is fantastically inventive and undeniably patriotic. She designs chocolates that don’t head-blast people with a flavour hit straight away, but gradually creep up on you. Kind of like eating chilli.

Her Kiwi chocolate flavours include Pohutukawa, Hokey Pokey, Pavlova, Kiwifruit, Manuka honey and Cheese Rolls.

She’s also dabbled with Bluff Oysters. Mayor Tim Shadbolt once took some of her experimental chocolate-dipped oysters to a food festival. She freely concedes they were an epic failure.

Her latest venture is fusing wine flavours into chocolate using freeze-dried grapes, which has been a smash-hit. Order up some Rabbit Ranch Pinor Noir Marshmallow Chocolate bunnies. They are a party in your mouth.

year from March 1 to August 31, or when the quota has been caught.

There’s no fresher way to savour oysters than buying straight from a Bluff factory shop, or while parked up at the iconic Stirling Point sign post, overlooking the surly, heaving ocean of Foveaux Strait.

I stopped off for a feed at Fowler’s Oysters, where you can buy them raw, or battered, fish and chip style. They also batter and fry lip-smacking Oyster Balls, based on an old Southlander’s recipe. I’ve always adored the delicacy, but the oysters from Fowler’s were unquestionably the greatest tasting Bluffies I have ever devoured.

If you’re hankering to wrap your lips around another Southland staple, muttonbird, make a beeline to Zookeepers Cafe on Tay Street, Invercargill. The café does a great version of eggs benedict for breakfast, which includes the seabird.

In honour of the city’s legendary mayor, it’s listed on the menu as Eggs Shadbolt. The muttonbird’s meat tastes very salty, quite pungent – certainly not a palate pleaser, in my book. But well worth trying.

1 1/3 C (200g) self raising flour 1/3 C (75g) firmly packed brown sugar 1½ C (440g) bought fruit mince ½ C (125ml) olive oil 1/3 C (80ml) milk 1 egg 250 white ready-made icing ¼ C (40g) icing sugar Cachous, to decorate ■ Preheat oven to 200C (180C fan-forced). Line 40 holes of four 12-hole mini (20ml) muffin pans with paper cases.

■ Sift flour and brown sugar into a large bowl.

■ Whisk fruit mince, oil, milk and egg in a medium bowl until combined; stir into flour mixture until barely combined.

■ Drop level tablespoons of mixture into paper cases; bake about 15 minutes. Cool cakes in pans.

■ Knead icing on surface dusted

In brief Barrett answers critics A couple of things became increasingly evident as the All Blacks at first dominated and then were forced to dig pretty deep to subdue Australia 37-20 in Yokohama; the class of Beauden Barrett and the importance to the team of Brodie Retallick. That Barrett is the best first-five New Zealand is clear but he probably needed a big performance for his own peace of mind as much as anything else as Richie Mo’unga continues to snap at his heels. Referee got it right Steve Hansen has defended referee Romain Poite’s decision to send Wallabies hooker Tolu Latu to the bin late in the All Blacks’ 37-20 win in Yokohama. Latu was shown a yellow card for an open hand push to the face of All Black hooker Codie Taylor, effectively ending any chance of a Wallabies comeback. All Blacks coach Hansen said the decision was “probably” harsh but said Latu had left the ref with no other option.

“You are not allowed to strike someone in the face so it was pretty dumb wasn’t it. And if you do dumb things you get dumb reactions,” Hansen said.

Countbacks order of the day

Methven and Allenton are the two unbeaten teams after two rounds of the Mid Canterbury Tennis A grade competition this season, although both sides were made to work for their wins on Saturday.

Both teams claimed their wins after a countback on games, after the clashes between Methven and Fairton, and Allenton and Southern finished all tied up at 3-all on matches.

Just three games was the difference in the Methven versus Fairton clash, with Methven taking it out on the countback 51-48.

Methven dominated proceedings in the bottom order, while Fairton dominated up the top, with their top pairing of Rhys Cromie and Tyler Leonard combining to beat Methven’s Pete Kirwan and Lee Gilbert in the top doubles 6-2 6-3.

match of the season after missing round one due to injury – showed that his early season form was pretty good with a 6-2 6-2 win over Eddie Dargue in the number one singles, while youth won out over experience in the number two singles, with Leonard beating Kirwan 6-4 6-2.

Gilbert dropped down to number three for the singles and didn’t drop a game against Phil Crozier, while Methven also took the win in the number four singles with Josh Jones too good for Jacob Pye, winning 6-4 6-4.

With the bottom doubles seeing Jones and Dargue taking Methven’s third win with a 6-3 6-2 win over Crozier and Pye, the countback was required to find out who came out on top.

It was the same story in the match between Allenton and Southern, with Allenton coming out on top 54-50 on games.

The doubles matches were shared, with Jason Feutz and

Tony Brosnahan combining for Southern and beating Allenton’s Andre van Rooyen and Ashleigh Leonard in the top doubles 7-6 6-3, while Allenton’s Henry Ross and Caleb Collins evened the ledger by beating Southern’s Aidan Watt and Brendon Adam in the bottom doubles 6-0 6-1.

Allenton’s van Rooyen picked up his second win of the day by beating Feutz in the top singles 6-4 7-6, while Brosnahan got one back for Southern when he beat Leonard 6-4 6-3 in the number two singles.

Allenton’s third win came courtesy of Ross at three, who beat Watt 6-0 6-2, while Adam beat Collins 6-0 6-1 at four.

No countback was required in the day’s other clash though, with Tinwald taking their first win of the season, beating Hampstead 5-1.

Tinwald took out both doubles matches, with their top pairing of Cameron McCracken

and Luca Landells too good for Hampstead’s Aidan Mitchell and Connor Brosnahan, winning 7-6 6-3, and their bottom pairing of Andrew Landells and Mary-Anne Martin beating Hampstead’s Michael Kerr and John Leslie 6-2 6-4.

Tinwald’s dominance continued down the bottom with Andrew Landells beating Kerr 6-4 6-2 at three, and Martin beating Leslie in three sets 6-1 4-6 1-0 (10-5), but Hampstead did manage to claw one back up the order.

Connor Brosnahan took on Luca Landells at two and picked up a 6-4 6-3 win, while up in the top singles Cameron McCracken – a newcomer to Mid Canterbury Tennis circles – was in fine form again, beating Mitchell 6-0 6-0.

In A reserve results on Saturday, the Methven Diamonds picked up a 4-2 win over Hampstead and the Allenton Kakapos beat Southern/Wakanui 5-1.

They came in their thousands to Eden Park, braved the heavy rain through the first half, and were rewarded with an extra-time classic – Auckland winning their first national provincial title since 2007 at the end of an extraordinary 100-minute match. This Mitre 10 Cup premiership final was enjoyed to the fullest by a crowd of 20,130 who took advantage of the free entry. Canterbury, targeting their 10th title win in 11 years, played their part but they couldn’t crack the blue and whites when it mattered.

Horowhenua-Kapiti win Horowhenua-Kapiti won the Lochore Cup yesterday.

From 23-19 down, they fought back to beat Wairarapa Bush 26-23 in a rugged battle in Levin.

To win the cup in their 125th year, just made it all the more satisfying for Horowhenua-Kapiti. It wasn’t a pretty performance, but one built on strong scrummaging.

With a 19-17 scoreline with 26 minutes to play Horohenua-Kapiti were holding on, but only just.

Within 10 minutes the tables had entirely turned, as two Tipene Haira penalties made it 23-19 to Wairarapa Bush. Just as things were beginning to look terminal for Horowhenua-Kapiti, reserve hooker David McErlean powered over to score.

In brief Kiwis own worst enemy The pursuit of history in England is now that much more difficult for the Kiwis after their winless run at Hull’s KCOM Stadium continued yesterday. Failing to build on momentum garnered from their upset win over the Kangaroos two weeks ago in Auckland, the Kiwis were their own worst enemies as they fell to an 18-16 defeat, a fifth straight loss at this venue. The Kiwis had their chances but, ultimately, discipline proved costly. They conceded nine penalties, many of those in the second half.

T20 ends in thrilling draw

A late Lauriston meltdown in Saturday’s Mid Canterbury Cricket’s T20 competition final against the Tech Stags resulted in the game ending in a rare draw.

Lauriston looked to have one hand firmly on the trophy as they attempted to chase down the Stags’ total of 96, until a late flurry of wickets put the Stags well and truly back in the hunt and set up a nail-biting finish.

Lauriston went from cruising to victory at 83/5 and needing just 14 runs to win it, to all of a sudden staring down the barrel of a final over where the scores were tied and the two batsmen at the crease were all who remained.

The Tech Stags brought Jason Morrison on to bowl – his first over of the day – and he started with a dot ball before snaring the final wicket of Reuben Early on the second ball of the final over to see the game end in the draw.

It was an incredible finish to a game which was always going to be tight.

Both the Stags and Lauriston dropped just one game each heading into the final, and had produced some top efforts in their four games leading to the final.

The Stags batted first but found themselves in trouble early after losing both of their opening batsmen without a run being scored.

Callum Gallagher top-scored with 24 as the Stags posted a total of just 96.

After starring with the bat for Lauriston last weekend, Alex Hooper was the side’s star with the ball, taking three wickets for just one run off his four overs.

Lauriston would have headed into their innings feeling good, off the back of a couple of impressive runs chases.

Earlier on Saturday they had chased down the Tech Old Dogs’ total of 154 in just 15.4 overs, and

the week before they’d beaten Coldstream by scoring 145 runs in just 11.1 overs.

Although Lauriston didn’t have their batting hero from that game – Hooper – for the first game on Saturday, Bevan Richan picked up where he left off, starting Saturday with an impressive 99 not out against the Old Dogs.

Hooper was back on board for the final and after his impressive effort with the ball, again top scored with the bat, but this time it wasn’t enough.

Hooper scored 29 before being caught off the bowling of Bevan Ravenscroft, and when Nick Gilbert became the Stags’ sixth victim – out for 20 with his side on 85 – Lauriston were starting to look a little shaky and the side’s tail needed to wag.

But, it didn’t.

Des Kruger was a standout with ball in hand for the Stags, taking 3/5 off his four overs.

Earlier in the day, the Stags had

sat out the final round with the bye and having already secured their spot in the final just had to wait to find out who they’d play.

Lauriston needed to beat the Tech Old Dogs to ensure it was them, and they did that with ease, winning by eight wickets.

The Old Dogs batted first and made a more than respectable 153/4, with Sam Hurley top scoring with 53.

In reply, Richan anchored the Lauriston innings, opening the batting and finishing 99 not out as Lauriston got through to 158/2 in 15.4 overs to claim the win.

Nick Gilbert was also there at the end, on 27 not out.

Lauriston’s win meant any hope the winner of the day’s other match between Coldstream and Methven had of making the final had gone.

Methven won that game by three wickets, after being set a target of 121 by Coldstream to win.

Roger Federer will get a chance to claim his 99th ATP Tour level title in the final of the Swiss Indoors against unfancied qualifier Marius Copil. On his home court in Basel, Federer dismantled Russian Daniil Medvedev 6-1 6-4 in their semifinal. “I’m very happy. It was my best performance this week,” Federer said. “I’m starting to really get to understand the conditions and it was consistent. The results show it as well, so I’m very happy.”

Sledge upsets Warner David Warner’s wife says the suspended test batsman left the field in a Sydney grade match on Saturday because he was concerned where “very hurtful” comments to him could lead. Warner temporarily left the field mid-innings during his century for Randwick Petersham after comments from Jason Hughes – the older brother of the late Phillip Hughes. Warner has a reputation as a sledger in international cricket but his wife claimed this went too far.

Breakers finally get it right against Adelaide

West Indies have claimed the first victory of their tour of India by winning the third one-day international to draw level in the series.

After the last contest ended in a dramatic tie, the Windies finally got over the line in Pune, winning by 43 runs. Virat Kohli won the toss and put the tourists in, and their total of 9-283 hardly appeared the most daunting, with Shai Hope getting 95. When Kohli was bowled by Marlon Samuels for 107 to leave India on 7-220, only the tail was left, and it did not wag for long as they were bowled out for 240. - PA

It was the Breakers’ first home win of the season.

Unheralded Kiwi forward Delany came off the bench to score a

career high 27 points, helping his team overcome a 14-point deficit midway through the opening quarter.

Delany was irresistible when he drove to the basket, bringing the crowd to life at Spark Arena.

The Breakers had suffered heavy losses to Brisbane and Sydney in their two previous home games in Auckland.

Centre Shawn Long came alive in the second half to finish with 14 points, nine rebounds and three blocks.

Another American, Armani Moore, silenced critics who have questioned his quality with 17 points.

Adelaide had played just two days earlier, beating the Taipans in Cairns, before 12 hours of trav-

el had them arriving in Auckland at 1am yesterday, 13 hours before tip-off.

The scoreboard eloquently told their story.

Winx ‘the greatest’

By Mathew toogood Tucked away from the packed crowd, Chris Waller has watched the best horse he will ever train do what no other has done before.

Waller watched Saturday’s Cox Plate from the same spot he has for Winx’s three previous wins in Australasia’s weight-for-age championship, in the weighing area on TV. “I’m a bit different. I just like to watch it on my own,” Waller said.

“A lot of emotions go through you.”

And the race panned out almost as perfectly as Waller could have hoped apart from Winx being a little wide early before tucking in to a good spot. With a fourth Cox Plate in the mare’s keeping as she raced clear in the straight, Waller got to relax a little and savour the closing stages.

“The last 100 metres was pretty

good,” he said. “I shook (racing manager) Charlie Duckworth’s hand 50 metres short of the post.”

Waller then made his way out to the front of the grandstands and admitted the crowd reaction to champion Winx’s victory was something he will carry with him forever.

“That’s why I’m emotional. It’s pretty surreal,” he said.

“We’ve just treated it like another race. But obviously it was a bit bigger.

“It’s such a special place to be and to win four Cox Plates, I hadn’t even thought about doing it, let alone today.”

Winx became the only four time winner of the Cox Plate and stretched her winning sequence to 29 races, 22 at Group One level.

“She’s the greatest I’ll ever have anything to do with,” Waller said. - AAP

Scousers go top Sadio Mane has scored twice and Mohamed Salah provided two assists as Liverpool took over at the top of the English Premier League table by beating Cardiff 4-1 at Anfield yesterday.

The Reds, who would concede a league goal at home for the first time since February when Callum Paterson beat Alisson Becker in the 78th minute, secured all three points thanks to Mane’s brace and efforts from playmaker Salah and Xherdan Shaqiri.

Salah grabbed his fourth goal in three games by reacting quickly when several Liverpool efforts were blocked in the 10th minute and, in the second half, Mane raced onto an Alberto Moreno pass to smash the ball into the top corner.

Paterson nudged one in to give Cardiff some faint hope of forcing a draw, but substitute Shaqiri soon opened his Liverpool account by collecting a Salah assist and notching.

Mane put the game to bed as Salah once again provided a killer pass.

Roberto Pereyra scored a fine solo goal to kick-start Watford’s dominant 3-0 home victory over Aaron Mooy’s Huddersfield, who sank to the bottom of the table.

The former Juventus winger dribbled past the entire Terriers defence to open

the scoring after 10 minutes, not long before Gerard Deulofeu steered a fine finish across Jonas Lossl to double the hosts’ lead.

Isaac Success was well-placed to bundle the ball over the line after Watford produced a clever free-kick routine late on.

Callum Wilson heaped more woe on struggling Fulham with a double at Craven Cottage as Bournemouth ran out 3-0 winners. The Cherries striker converted an early penalty after being brought down by Timothy Fosu-Mensah and David Brooks made it 2-0 by shooting through Marcus Bettinelli’s legs in the 72nd minute.

A fantastic through ball from Ryan Fraser allowed Wilson to beat the goalkeeper at the near post, sealing a convincing win.

Glenn Murray’s 100th goal for Matt Ryan’s Brighton boosted the Seagulls to a third-straight league win as Wolves went down 1-0 on the south coast.

Shane Duffy had fired Nuno Espirito Santo’s ambitious side a warning in the first half when heading against a post but it was veteran forward Murray who settled the match in Brighton’s favour by following up Bruno’s miss, minutes into the second half.

Elsewhere, Southampton and Newcastle’s toothless runs continued with a dire goalless draw between the clubs at St Mary’s.

TAKING TO THE HILLS

Around 600 athletes headed for the hills on a mission on Saturday morning – and what a picturesque mission it was. They were all taking part in the annual Mission Mt Somers trail running event, which saw them tackle varying distances – there was the 42km marathon, the 21km half marathon, and the shorter 10km and 5km distances which were popular with young people and families. Clear skies and warm temperatures met 600-odd athletes when they ran into the hills on Saturday morning at the start of the annual Mission Mt Somers trail running event.

Race director Glen Currie said they couldn’t have asked for a better day for it, and other than the odd rolled ankle – which was to be expected when you had so many people running across the type of terrain they were – the day was drama-free and everyone left happy.

Mission Mt Somers was into its fourth year and was made up of four different events – the 42km marathon, the 21km half marathon, a 10km event and a 5km event.

The marathon was won by Will Fraser, who finished well clear of his nearest rival, crossing the finish line in 4.43.52 hours.

In second was Jamie Gardner in 5.01.22 hours, while Struan Webb was less than a minute behind him in third.

For the women, the marathon was won by Sarah Davidson in a time of 6.11.59 hours, with Indy

Kraal second in 6.14.14 hours, and there was a bit of a gap back to Helen Sinclair in third, who was the first veteran woman home in 6.30.26 hours.

Top Kiwi mountain runner Ryan Carr was the first to cross the line in the half marathon, winning in 2.11.32 hours, with veteran competitor George Lucas second in 2.17.53 hours and Rob Nesbitt third in 2.21.00 hours.

Isla Smith was the first women home in the half marathon in 2.38.22 hours, followed by Katie Smith in 2.48.57 hours.

Donna Young was third home,

and first in the veteran section, in 2.50.13 hours.

In the 10km run, junior Will Saunders crossed the line in first in a time of 45.36 minutes just 20 seconds ahead of second placed Kent Gibbons, while Mike Hanson was just nine seconds behind him in third.

Lindy Millar won the women’s 10km event in 47.40 minutes, while Jazzmin Wilson was second in 50.45 minutes and Sarah Hewson was third in 51.27 minutes.

It was the day of the youngster in the 5km event, with two competitors in the 10-17 age group the

first two home for the blokes.

Jack McKenzie won in 23.51 minutes, while Ruben Birt was second in 27.30 minutes.

In third was under-10 competitor Ciaran Harris in 28.05 minutes.

Two 10-17 year age group competitors were one and two for the women in the 5km event too, with Blaise France winning in 28.15 minutes and Mabelle Davidson second in 33.11 minutes.

It was an under-10 competitor in third place for the girls, too, with Sylvie France crossing the line in 33.19 minutes.
