A large number of sheep died following a stock truck crash on Moorhouse Road in Ruapuna yesterday. The crash occurred around 10.45am and involved a single truck and trailer unit containing approximately 500 sheep. The trailer of the vehicle, which contained 300 sheep, flipped, with approximately 150 sheep dying as a result of the crash, while the remaining 150 were
unharmed and were released into a nearby paddock. The other 200 sheep located at the front of the truck were unharmed, while the driver of the truck was assessed at the scene for minor injuries. The truck came to a stop in a large hedge on the left-hand side of the road, damaging a power pole, causing live power lines to fall on to the trailer. The road was blocked for most of the day, with a crane required to remove the truck.
Fire crews from Ashburton, Mayfield and Geraldine attended the crash. “We had to cut the crate open because it had become detached from the trailer,” station officer Robbie Maw said. “It is pretty rare but we have been to a few.” It has been an unfortunate week for stock in the district after a number of cows were killed after a train collided with a herd of approximately 50 cows early Tuesday morning.
