Community generosity and a plan to invest in the future has led to a major $1.5m cash boost for Ashburton Hospital.

Advance Ashburton trustee Gary Fail presented Canterbury DHB chief executive David Meates with the cheque at a ceremony held at the hospital, yesterday.

The donation, in conjunction with the Mackenzie Charitable Trust, the Lion Foundation, the Ashburton Trust and the Trevor Wilson Charitable Trust, will go towards the $8.7m of improvements already under way at the hospital.

This includes building a new 1040sq m Acute Assessment Unit and Day Procedure Theatre.

Mr Meates said it was great to receive such a generous contribution from the community.

“It’s remarkable how supportive and engaged the community has been right from when we first announced the upgrade, to the facilities here in Ashburton

after the Canterbury quakes,” he said.

“We are very grateful to have had the people of Ashburton backing us on this journey.

“Their commitment has meant the best health services, for what has become a very strong and vibrant rural community, are available both now and long into the future.

“I’m absolutely delighted on behalf of Canterbury DHB to accept this donation and would like to say a huge thank you to all those who have contributed to this very generous gift.”

The new Acute Assessment Unit replaces an older, smaller unit and is designed to allow staff to assess, stabilise and provide short-term care for people with acute conditions.

Mr Meates added it was a great honour to acknowledge the Ashburton community for what has been “a really, really long journey” over many years.

Topp Twins to liven up rural towns

The Topp Twins are hitting the road this week in their locallymade stinky, and Ashburton will be their first stop.

Mid Canterbury’s hills will reverberate with the sound of yodelling and laughter as the iconic Kiwi duo launch their Heading for the Hills Tour.

Lynda and Jools Topp will perform at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre this Saturday, and then other rural venues throughout the country until May 21.

Lynda, who lives at Staveley, said yesterday that Ashburton Forks Engineering made the steel frame for the “baby stinky” they would be travelling in, which she then fitted out.

“We are going to live in it, like the road workers,” Lynda said.

In days of old, traction engines would pull wagons, set up for worker accommodation with bunks and potbelly stoves inside, to roadworks sites. The wagons got their nickname from how they would begin to smell after a few weeks.

It is classic Topp Twins style.

The pair did a similar tour more than 20 years ago when they hooked up a gypsy caravan and took their talent to rural locations.

Lynda said it would be crowded in the Topp Twins’ stinky, with the many characters they will have accompanying them. They would

include Ken and Ken, Camp Mother and Camp Leader, and bowling ladies Lorna and Mavis who would be making their Ashburton debut.

Heading for the Hills would be the first full theatre show for the twins in Lynda’s home town of Ashburton, she said. Playing the rural venues was what they loved doing, and the tour would also include Jools’ home town area of Matakana.

Lynda said “a little bit of politics” would liven up the shows.

And as well as character comedy, they would feature the twins’ unique combination of original country music, utilising a range of instruments including guitar, mouth-harp and spoons.

They were excited to be back on the road after focusing on filming Topp Country over the last four years, the third season of which is to air later this year on TV One. As much as they loved filming, working a crowd and getting immediate feedback made live performance their favourite, she said.

“We have been working together 40 years, we don’t even have to talk to each other, we just know what’s going to happen,” she said.

Jools is a regular visitor to Mid Canterbury, enjoying time with her sister and wife Donna at their Topp Lodge in Staveley.

“We tried to get her to move here but she said it was too cold,” Lynda said.

Trail name trend hinders search

Trampers on the Te Araroa Trail adopting bogus “trail names” could become a problem for rescuers.

Methven Land Search and Rescue spokesperson Don Geddes was unaware of the trend until this week’s search for American tramper Clint Hewitt was instigated in the Ashburton Lakes District.

Sixteen members of the Methven LandSAR group were de-

ployed in poor weather conditions to start the search on Monday morning. Hewitt was located safe and well walking along the Double Hill Run Road late on Monday afternoon.

He had checked in at huts using a trail name, confusing the rescue party.

“It seems to be some kind of culture growing around the trail,” he said.

“A lot of people are using trail names that bear no relation to their real names when they sign

hut logbooks; Clint Hewitt had used a trail name.”

Geddes said information in hut books often provided key information when someone was reported missing.

“If we can’t find a person’s name we don’t know which areas to concentrate a search on.”

Thirty-two-year-old Hewitt was last seen leaving Manuka Hut, near Lake Emily, last Wednesday morning. He intended to head north on the section of the trail which meets the road on the bank

of the Rakaia River.

He had been tramping with two companions, but left the hut ahead of them, Geddes said.

En route Hewitt changed his plans and took a detour. Unaware of this his companions ended up on the trail in front of him.

Hewitt, described by police as a very experienced tramper, had then decided to spend a couple days camping in the north Ashburton River area.

“He had a tent with him, the impression we got was that he could

look after himself,” Geddes said.

However, Hewitt’s friends became concerned when he had not turned up by Sunday and reported him missing.

Geddes said the trio appeared to have only made “loose arrangements” but clear communication was essential when travelling in the back country, especially when alone.

Planning for a detailed search was well under way when he was located by a Methven LandSAR containment team on Monday.

Ashburton Health Services manager Bernice Marra said it was wonderful to receive the donation towards the new facilities, which opened at the end of last year.

“Already the new facilities are proving to be a huge asset for our community,” she said.

“It allows us to keep pace with health care innovations and means our staff can provide the right care to the right person at the right time, both now and well into the future.”

gery, Greg Robertson, said the AAU provides “state of the art” facilities allowing specialists from Christchurch to perform day procedures for people in Ashburton in its new theatre and recovery suite.

“The new facilities together with the $450,000 pledged by the generous community funders to establish a rural health academic centre allowing Ashburton Hospital to build its status as New Zealand’s first rural centre of medical excellence.

Advance Ashburton trustee Gary Fail said it’s the “upshot of a lot of work by a lot of people”.

“As a town, we can be very thankful.”

Trevor Croy described the occasion as special for everyone involved.

“It’s a culmination of six years of endeavour entered into partnership with the DHB so we have state of the art health facilities,” he said.

“We have demonstrated a willingness to do it ourselves and not relied on the government.

“It’s great to be a part of that.”

Prestigious post for high-tech farmer

Methven farmer Craige Mackenzie has been appointed to the board of an elite world farming group.

Mackenzie, a cropping and irrigation farmer who uses precision agriculture technology, will be rubbing shoulders with some of the world’s most influential food producers.

He is the first New Zealander to join the group.

Mackenzie said precision agriculture used technology to monitor things like soil moisture so irrigation water could be applied only as needed and mapped soil profiles to ensure inputs like fertiliser were applied only in the amounts needed. He has also started using drones to help gather further information about the property.

He says technology to support farmers’ decision-making had become affordable and the challenge was now to use it and make use of the data that is gathered.

Mackenzie is one of four international directors appointed to the Global Farmer Network and says it is a great opportunity for New Zealand farming.

Stephenson: ‘Put up or shut up’ Journalist Jon Stephenson has called on the Chief of Defence Force to “put up or shut up” and release camera footage taken during SAS raids in Afghanistan.

Lieutenant General Tim Keating fronted media yesterday after returning from Iraq and almost a week after Stephenson and Nicky Hager released Hit & Run, alleging SAS raids in Baghlan province in 2010 killed six civilians and not insurgents as officials have claimed.

“Everyone knows everyone in this area it is like a big gossip mill. They categorically state there was no other operation in that area that night.”

Influx of patients Waikato Hospital’s emergency department recorded its busiest day on Monday as hospitals around the country struggle to cope with an influx of patients. Emergency department clinical director Dr John Bonning said 283 patients went through the department yesterday compared to the average of 210. Race weather ideal for the ducks

Despite inclement weather, the Hinds School Duck Race was a success.

Hinds School Charitable Trust Fundraising Committee chairperson Hannah Fulton said despite far from tropical weather, a great day was had.

“We said on our Facebook page the event would be going ahead rain or shine and thankfully the drizzle we had cleared up for the event,” she said.

“We had the bouncy-castle in the hall so the littlies could keep warm and dry.”

About 150 people attended the event, making the most of the hot food on offer such as the lamb on a spit and burgers.

A range of crafts made by the students such as tyre chairs were available for purchase and people were able to have a go at games such as attempting to shoot the duck off the top of a can with a Nerf gun, said Fulton.

“The duck race and the decoy went really well and the kids had a lot of fun,” she said.

“People showed up in their gumboots and raincoats and still had a fantastic time.

Tristan Melzner and Lucas Leschok were two young men excited to see the other side of the world.

The German friends had recently been in Australia; travelling around the country, taking seasonal jobs picking cherries and making friends at a backpackers in the middle of nowhere.

They had been in New Zealand for about two weeks, their friends say, when tragedy struck and brought their adventure to a sudden end.

Melzner and Leschok, in their early 20s, died when their rental car collided with a bus carrying more than a dozen tourists near Te Anau last Tuesday.

Minutes later, the vehicle burst into flames. Those first at the scene tried bravely to get to at least one of the young men who is thought to have survived the impact of the crash, but were beaten back by flames.

The crash happened on a bend on Mil-

ford Rd shortly before 3pm.

Those close to the pair have paid tribute to two polite young men who had a spirit of adventure.

Paula and Trevor Tobias came to know the two friends well during their stay at their Hillston Backpackers, in New South Wales late last year.

Tristan and Lucas, also known as Luca, had arrived on their doorstep in early November ready for the cherry-picking season, which was late last year because of heavy floods.

“They were really nice young kids. They were here to do their second-year visa to do some work to stay in the country a bit longer.

“Tristan, who was the baby-faced one, was really a nice, clean, fresh young fellow.

They were almost naive in a way.

“Luca seemed a little bit older. They were nice and polite.”

Sewer tests flush out drugs Wastewater tests of Auckland and Christchurch treatment plants have revealed traces of cocaine, methamphetamine and MDMA. However, authorities overseeing the new pilot programme have so far failed to find any detections of heroin and designer drug alpha-PVP. The insights were among baseline results of the first three rounds of testing in the programme, which began in December and is being overseen by the New Zealand Customs Service, Ministry of Health and New Zealand Police.

The programme, targeting wastewater sites in Auckland and Christchurch, aims to provide a better picture of the prevalence of drug use in New Zealand communities.

Results showed weekly totals of 734 grams, 648 grams and 730 grams of methamphetamine were detected respectively in December, January and February in Auckland, compared with weekly readings of 731 grams, 458 grams and 798 grams in Christchurch over the same months.

MDMA appeared in weekly quantities of 111 grams, 97 grams and 51 grams in Auckland over the three months, and 261 grams, 142 grams and 120 grams correspondingly in Christchurch.

Cocaine turned up in totals of 92 grams, 40 grams and 49 grams in Auckland, and in 6 grams and 25 grams in Christchurch in

January and February only.

The first quarter’s results would build a baseline for future testing, authorities said.

“As this is the first time New Zealand Government has undertaken this type of programme, we need to ensure that we have an appropriate baseline to compare future results from,” said police assistant commissioner Bill Searle.

While this report does include three months’ worth of data, it is difficult to make meaningful analysis of the results until further data is available.”

However, Searle said, it could be seen from the results that there was no alphaPVP or heroin being found in either testing site.

“The absence of these drugs in the areas being tested is good news for agencies.”

Ministry of Health director of mental health Dr John Crawshaw said the programme would be the first time authorities had access to quantitative data that would allow for a more accurate picture of drug use in those communities where the testing is conducted.

“The programme will also show if an area sees changes in drug use patterns as well as the introduction of a drug in an area where it has previously tested negative,” Crawshaw said.

“This information will help government consider responses to the needs identified in the results.”

esterday’s $1.5 million boost for Ashburton Hospital highlights the grit and determination the community has long held to keep hospital services in the district.

The donation, tagged for upgrade work, was presented

by Advance Ashburton trustee Gary Fail, on behalf of MacKenzie Charitable Trust, the Lion Foundation, the Ashburton Trust and the Trevor Wilson Charitable Trust.

Yesterday’s gesture will go some way toward soothing the anxiety which has hung over hospital services for almost 40 years.

Significant budget cuts were tabled in 1980 while the hospital was still governed by a locallyelected board and government funded through the Health Department.

While the $1.2 million cut didn’t go ahead the writing was on the wall that the delivery of health care in the district was earmarked for change.

Fast forward five years and $7.5 million was signed off for redevelopment, however, 18 months down the track work had not started. The project finally kicked-off in1987, but a year later ran out of steam and cash.

Within this timeline health system restructuring was also on the table, with a recommendation the Ashburton service would be administered by a health board based in Timaru or Christchurch.

Ashburton Hospital passed from local governance into the hands of the Canterbury District Health Board in 1990.

Successive budget cuts put unrelenting pressure on service, culminating in a decision to cease inpatient surgery as part of a downgrade and eventually specialist services.

The community rallied to protest, vowing to fight to the end to keep services in town.

The years ticked by in an atmosphere of uncertainty, culminating in the Canterbury earthquakes, which closed two key areas of the hospital.

While the CDHB constantly reassured the community the hospital would be rebuilt, serious doubts remained.

However, in 2013 the $8.7 million rebuild was confirmed.

The cash injection received yesterday will ensure we have a state-of-the-art facility, cementing the hospital’s role as a day surgery and procedure centre for years to come.

Rosey Ashburton Collage was a great school when I attended, sure it had its imperfections but what school doesn’t.

I hear stories now and see videos like the one yesterday and think what the hell went wrong. Not just at AshCol but across society.

What the hell went so horribly wrong that: A. Mobs can fight one person and that’s classed as “fair” B. Videoing it is normal- watching it over and over again is normal. And C. Where’s the morals? Of the person doing the kicking? Of the ones videoing it? Hell, of anyone??

Just in case kids (yes kids- going to school everyday to eat lunch and have playground fights is NOT the real world and this does NOT make you adults or tough) - A. Mobs against one doesn’t make you a winner or tough at the end, it makes you pathetic and unable to function without a buddy system.

B. The ones that watch are no better than the idiots in the middle. And C. Every single person that plays a part in thisthe mob, the spectators, the ones that watch it later- they are all the same. Cowards. Cowards with no strength or courage to stand up and recognise that this is so far from normal its not funny.

Strength is walking away when someone hurts or upsets you.

Strength is stepping in to pull someone away when they are angry.

Strength is standing up for the person with no voice.

Strength is seeing something that’s wrong and saying so.

That’s what makes you tough. Not this.

This is as far from strength as you could possibly get.

Council pleased police up to full strength I

am very pleased to report that police numbers are back to full quota, plus one additional resource in the Ashburton District.

Many of you will recall my concern earlier in the year when our district policing seemed comparatively low – something that bothered me greatly, when taking into account the area that our police need to cover.

I would like to thank Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew for her assistance and guidance, along with the NZ Police for listening to my concerns and taking this issue to the highest levels.

I know that the police were stretched, with the situation as it was, and feel that as a council we did everything we could to bring it to the attention of the right people and rectify the situation.

At the moment, there is heightened community concern about youth crime in the Ashburton District.

a trend that is throughout the country.

Individually, we can help by keeping up the communication with young people in our families, knowing who they are associating with, and where they spend their time.

While friends are usually most important to young people, families can still play a pivotal part in the decisions they make.

At a practical level, we can make sure we don’t put temptation in the way of opportunistic criminals.

For example, not locking doors, leaving valuable items visible in cars and not putting

household ladders away, are all invitations for criminals.

If you are the victim of a crime, you also need to tell the police.

Your report may be a piece in a much larger puzzle.

While our police are concerned at the current rate of youth crime, they are confident it is being resolved.

“The policing team continues to focus on the identified youth that are creating community harm in Ashburton,” Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield says.

“When they offend, we make arrests and will continue to present them to the youth courts.

At that point, police can only recommend a form of remedial action as we are bound by legislation.

“However, being placed in custody, electronic bail, and strict release conditions can still be imposed and are being used for top recidivist youth offenders.

“As we have been seeing in recent national news articles,

other similar-sized towns in New Zealand are having significantly more issues with criminal youth than we are in Ashburton.

“We can learn from these other examples and intervene early to deter future youth offending within this community,” Banfield said.

Ashburton District Council is also undertaking a Section 17A review of its funding of community safety initiatives.

After this has been done, we will have a better idea of where to put our funding to address current and future community concerns.

Chinese premier reassures NZ Chinese Premier Li Keqiang acknowledged the intense focus on China’s relationship with the US and provided assurances that the relationship would remain good for New Zealand’s interests.

Li and Prime Minister Bill English attended a gala lunch at the Langham Hotel in Central Auckland yesterday.

“Let me stress that the shared interests of our bilateral relationship far outweigh the differences,” he said of China’s relationship with the US. Li expressed confidence in the future “despite twists and turns”.

He assured the audience at the lunch that it would remain good for New Zealand’s interests just as the strong New Zealand-China relationship would be good for Australia and the United States.

Li reiterated China’s commitment to global free trade.

more than 80 countries worldwide. The Kiwi company was bought out by Chinese whiteware manufacturer Haier in 2012.

However, after the takeover and change to Chinese ownership, the research division of Fisher & Paykel remains in New Zealand.

Li arrived in Wellington on Sunday.

On Monday English and Li signalled negotiations for an “upgrade” to the New Zealand-China free trade agreement will begin next month, a step the Prime Minister said would help boost trade to $30 billion.

Dotcom made to pay up to former staff Kim Dotcom has been ordered to pay more than $26,000 in unpaid wages to former staff.

Three of Dotcom’s former employees claimed they were unfairly dismissed by the internet entrepreneur, and took their cases to the Employment Relations Authority (ERA).

In the ruling released on Monday, ERA member James Crichton upheld two of the complaints and dismissed the third.

The cases related to Pan Filo Orduna, John Tactaquin and Ruth Relleve, who worked for Dotcom from 2010 onwards.

The authority upheld Orduna and Tactaquin’s cases but dismissed Relleve’s. Orduna was employed by Dotcom as a butler six days a week.

In 2012, Dotcom was sent to jail for a month and his assets were frozen.

“While Mr Dotcom was incarcerated, money became tight and there were difficulties paying the totality of the salaries of the household staff, either in part or at all,” Crichton said.

“This was because Mr Dotcom’s assets were frozen as a consequence of the actions of the New Zealand authorities consequent upon the raid.”

According to Orduna, Dotcom assured staff that unpaid wages would be restored and salaries would return to normal when his financial situation improved.

Orduna also claimed that staff worked excessive hours beyond what was set out in their contract for which they were not paid.

Dotcom disputed this, saying staff never worked the sort of hours Orduna claimed, and because staff had free board, they were at the house 24 hours a day but that did not mean they were working.

Following a meeting with staff in 2013, Orduna said he decided

Kim Dotcom to find other work due to anxiety about his finances so he approached a former business partner of Dotcom’s.

He claimed when Dotcom found out, he thought Orduna had shared confidential information with the business partner and confronted Orduna, dismissing him on the spot.

Tactaquin was employed on a similar basis from 2011 as a personal assistant to Dotcom’s wife, Mona.

Crichton said according to the evidence presented by both sides, Tactaquin had an argument with the couple and was subsequently dismissed.

Orduna was seeking a total of $61,950 in lost wages and Tactaquin was seeking nearly $360,000. The claims included compensation for unjustified dismissal.

Crichton said he was satisfied that Orduna and Tactaquin had been unfairly dismissed and so awarded each three months salary of the difference between what they were earning when working for Dotcom and what they were earning in their new jobs elsewhere.

In brief Quake cost The around 38,000 claims expected to have come from November’s Kaikoura earthquake makes it one of the world’s most expensive insurance events in 2016, the industry body says.

The 7.8-magnitude quake struck on November 14, killing people and causing destruction as far afield as Christchurch, Kaikoura and Wellington. Despite the number and expense of claims, the Insurance Council of New Zealand says it plans to have made settlement offers to most claimants by the end of the year.

Famous pair’s venture Sir Peter Jackson and James Cameron have launched a business together in New Zealand. The pair, well-known as two of the world’s biggest film directors, have been friends for years and worked closely together on the production of Avatar which came out in 2009.

According to the Companies Office, PBT New Zealand was set up on March 3, and is jointly owned by Cameron’s Auckland business, T Base 2, and Jackson’s Wellington business, Wingnut Films. The four directors of the company are listed as Cameron and his wife Suzy Amis Cameron, and Jackson and his wife Frances Walsh. It is unclear what the business has been set up for.

Publishing days cut The Marlborough Express newspaper will soon be published just three days a week, Fairfax Media announced yesterday.

The Blenheim-based newspaper, which was first printed in 1866, will also shift from an evening to a morning newspaper when the changes are implemented from May 17. The paper will be published on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings instead of every weekday evening. Fairfax said that local news and information from Marlborough would also be published by the local team of journalists all day, every day on Stuff and its subsidiary site Neighbourly.

■ Rocket aioli: Place a handful of rocket leaves in a small food processor and process until roughly chopped. Add 1 small clove crushed garlic, 1T lemon juice and 1 egg yolk and process until combined. Slowly drizzle in 1/2 C olive oil through the feed tube until the aioli is creamy. Season and place in a small bowl, cover and refrigerate.

■ Salad: Place rinsed quinoa in a small heavy-based saucepan with 3/4 C cold water. Cover and bring to the boil, then reduce heat and simmer quinoa until the liquid is absorbed, about 15 minutes. Place Israeli couscous into a saucepan of boiling, salted water, reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes, until soft but still retains some bite. Drain and rinse

under cold water. Set both aside.

■ Heat barbecue grill until hot. Rub corn cobs with a dash of oil and season. Place on the hot grill and cook for 15 minutes, turning regularly. Set aside to cool a little, then stand cob on one end and using a sharp knife cut down to remove kernels. Brush barbecue grill with a dash of oil and place on zucchini. Cook until just tender. Season and set aside with corn kernels.

■ Dressing: Place all ingredients in a small screw-top jar, season and shake well.

■ Beef: Rub steaks with a little oil, season and place on a hot barbecue grill. Grill for 3-4 minutes on each side for medium-rare.

Remove from grill, cover and set aside to rest.

■ To serve: Place cooked quinoa and Israeli couscous in a large bowl, and using a fork, stir through the corn kernels, zucchini and spinach leaves. Pour over dressing, toss gently and place on a serving plate. Slice sirloin steak and place on top of the grain salad and sprinkle with the sesame seeds, shredded mint and nuts if using. Pass a bowl of rocket aioli.

1 white onion, chopped 1/2 C flour 1/2 t baking powder 1 egg 1/2 C finely chopped coriander or flat-leaf parsley Salt and pepper to taste Cooking oil Lemon wedges to serve ■ Mix all ingredients in a bowl to a smooth batter, season.

■ Heat a little oil in a heavy frypan, or grease a heated barbecue plate.

■ Add a dollop of the paua mixture and cook on both sides until golden brown and cooked through.

■ Place in a warmed oven while cooking the rest of the mixture.

■ Serve with lemon wedges and kumara chips (bought or homemade).

■ Grease a large non-stick pan with oil. Cook large spoonfuls of mixture for a couple of minutes on each side on a medium heat.

Check the first one to ensure it is cooked through to get an idea of the timing for the rest.

■ Serve with a green salad and aioli and a squeeze of lemon juice.

■ Using a deep fryer or a high-sided heavy-based saucepan, pour in enough oil to deep fry fritters.

Debbie wreaks havoc A powerful cyclone slammed into Australia’s tropical northeast coast yesterday, tearing down fences, snapping trees and knocking out power to thousands, officials said.

The destructive eyewall of Cyclone Debbie, a Category 4 storm packing winds up to 260 kilometres per hour, made landfall near Airlie Beach, a resort town in Queensland state, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology said in a statement.

The town is a jumping-off point for the Whitsunday Islands, a popular tourist destination that has been pummeled by fierce winds that damaged roofs and knocked down palm trees.

Officials warned that the slow-moving storm was likely to hover over the region for several hours before weakening as it moved inland.

Queensland Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said the cyclone’s glacial pace had created a “battering ram effect,” with some areas enduring the howling winds and drenching rains for a punishingly long time.

Communities along more than 300 kilometres of coastline were expected to be impacted, he said.

“I suspect before the day is out, we will see a lot of structural damage in the cyclone’s path,” Stewart said.

Thousands of people evacuated low-lying areas in the storm’s path on Monday. Hundreds of schools were closed yesterday and more than 20,000 households were without power by mid-afternoon.

“Conditions have deteriorated rapidly,” Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said in an address to Parliament. “Take care and stay safe. Be prepared to shelter in place until Wednesday.”

Whitsundays Regional Council Mayor Andrew Willcox said authorities had received 98 requests for help and had responded to most of them.

The storm also poses a serious threat to the farming region’s crops. The area produces a wide range of fruits and vegetables, including tomatoes, mangoes and peppers.

Parents sue to call baby girl Allah A couple in the US state of Georgia who were banned from naming their daughter Allah are taking legal action.

The state Department of Public Health has refused to issue the 22-month-old with a birth certificate.

Elizabeth Handy and Bilal Walk say it is unacceptable that their child has officially been left nameless.

But state officials say the child’s surname – ZalyKha Graceful Lorraina Allah – should either be Handy, Walk or a com-

bination of the two.

Allah is the Arabic word for God. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Georgia has filed a lawsuit in Fulton County Superior Court on the family’s behalf.

The girl’s father told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution they had called her Allah because it is “noble”.

“It is just plainly unfair and a violation of our rights,” Mr Walk said of the state’s refusal to acknowledge the name.

However, lawyers for the Department of Public Health said Georgia code “requires that a baby’s surname be either that of the father of the mother for purposes of the initial birth record”.

In a letter to the family, state officials wrote that ZalyKha’s surname can be changed through a petition to superior court, but only after the birth record is recognised.

According to the lawsuit, the unmarried couple already have a young son called Masterful Mosirah Aly Allah.

The ACLU says that without a birth certificate the parents cannot obtain a Social Security number for their daughter.

They fear the girl’s identity and rights as a US citizen will be questioned.

The ACLU said the state’s refusal to grant the family’s wishes was an unconstitutional example of government overreach.

“The parents get to decide the name of the child,” said Michael Baumrind, a lawyer for the family. “Not the state. It is an easy case.”

Lara Croft originated in the Tomb Raider video game franchise launched in 1996, and was since immortalised by Angelina Jolie in two movies released: one in 2001 and the other in 2003.

Masters of the art of sledging on the pitch

M

erv Hughes was the best at it and Shane Warne was renowned for his efforts, but it would appear Steve Smith hasn’t been able to follow suit when it comes to the ageold pastime of sledging.

Smith made headlines this week when it was discovered that his and Matthew Wade’s verbal altercation with Indian player Ravindra Jadeja during the final test match of their series, was recorded through the stumps microphone.

Smith, for all his class – of which of course there is none – could be heard telling Jadeja that he was useless.

Someone should probably show Smith the current rankings as they show Jadeja as the highest-ranked test bowler in the world – somewhat eliminating Smith’s comment.

Jadeja, to his credit, was unfazed and even went as far as to invite Wade to dinner after Australia had lost the test match, but there was no invitation for

Smith it would appear.

So, in the hope of this column reaching Smith so he can print it out and put it in his pocket for next time, here are my five favourite cricketing sledges of all time, funnily enough they all feature Australians.

5. Shane Warne v Daryl Cullinan: Warne and Cullinan had a bit of history, with the Australian great clearly holding the wood over his South African rival.

After a two year gap in between clashes, Warne let Cullinan know just how much he had missed him. “I’ve been waiting for two years for another chance at you,” he said. Cullinan never missed a beat though and his reply left Warne a little red-faced. “Looks like you’ve spent it eating …..”

4. Merv Hughes v Javed Miandad: During a test match between Australia and Pakistan in 1991 Javed Miandad tried to sledge Merv Hughes. He said to him: “Merv you are a big, fat bus conductor”.

dismissed Miandad. On doing so he ran past him and shouted: “Tickets please”.

3. Shane Warne and Darren Berry v Michael Slater: Slater, playing in a state cricket game against Warne and Berry got so riled up after the pair decided to see if they could make him self-implode. When Slater came out to bat, Warne and Berry began the sledging: Warne “Tick”, Berry “Tock”, Warne “Tick”, Berry “Tock”, etc.

After several overs, Slater got impatient and holed out to deep midwicket. As he trudged off, he glared at Warne and Berry, who said in unison “Kaboom!”

2. Ian Healy v an unknown South African player: In one of the tour matches in South Africa, Australia played a

match against a provincial side.

A portly batsman on strike was playing and missing constantly and the Australian’s were growing a little agitated until Ian Healy piped up from behind the stumps.

He yelled to Warne: “Bowl a Mars Bar half way down…we’ll get him stumped.” The line drew plenty of laughs, but the batsman didn’t miss a beat and replied back with, “Nah Boonie, (David Boon) fielding at short leg will be onto it before I can move.”

1. Glenn McGrath v Eddo Brandes.

Two of the best pace bowlers from their respective countries, McGrath and Brandes were at each other constantly. McGrath had been bowling to Brandes who just couldn’t make contact with his bat. So McGrath, as only an Australian could, walked down the wicket and asked the Zimbabwean, “Why are you so fat?”. Quick as a flash, Brandes replied: “Because every time I make love to your wife, she gives me a biscuit.”

Milestone for Messam

By CaMpBell Burnes One of the great Chiefs stalwarts will play his 150th game for the franchise against the Bulls on Saturday in Hamilton.

Liam Messam has just turned 33 and will likely run out on his home ground in the No 6 jersey to try and subdue the physical but limited men from Pretoria.

He has come a long way from the dynamic young loose forward who debuted in 2006, when Ian Foster was coaching the Chiefs, and Messam himself had to play second fiddle behind an All Blacks loose trio of Sione Lauaki, Marty Holah and Steven Bates.

He racked up more than 80 consecutive games for the franchise from 2006-12 when he was finally rested due to a niggling injury.

It was not quite in the realm of the indomitable George Smith, whose streak was well over 100, but not far off.

“I haven’t really sat down to think about it.

“I just turn up every week and prepare like I usually do,” says Messam.

“I love this community, love this team and franchise. It’s hard to walk away from it.

One day I will, but ... I know my responsibility now.”

His bye week was a busy one, as he took a team of Under 19s (Team Messam of the South Pacific Institute) to a sevens tournament in Hawaii, which they won.

Former ABs coach dies Eric Watson, a former coach of the All Blacks, has died in Dunedin, aged 91. Watson was in charge of the All Blacks in 1979-80, firstly in 1980 on an unsuccessful tour of Australia but then later in the year on a more distinguished one to Wales. Before joining the national selection panel Watson had a long tenure coaching Otago and then the national under 23 side which had an upset win over the All Blacks in 1973.

Foley unlikely starter Bernard Foley’s concussion symptoms have returned after the NSW Waratahs star played in their Super Rugby win over Melbourne on the weekend. The Wallabies five-eighth is in doubt for the round-six clash with the Crusaders in Sydney on Sunday having missed the Waratahs’ opening four games after suffering the head knock in pre-season. “Bernard’s welfare is our priority right now and our medical team are taking an active treatment process to manage his symptoms,” Waratahs coach Daryl Gibson said yesterday.

Opportunity for Blues The Blues, having snapped their losing streak by over-running the Bulls, must continue their momentum with a victory over the Force on Saturday, preferably with a bonus point, because far bigger challenges are looming. Their in-form right wing Matt Duffie spoke about the requirement of a ruthless attitude after scoring two of his team’s five second-half tries at North Harbour’s QBE Stadium last weekend, and, following that to its logical conclusion, the Blues must cash in at Eden Park against a team with an uncertain future and one of the weakest attacks in the competition.

ARU reassure Force ARU chief executive Bill Pulver has assured the Western Force that no decision has been made on their future, allaying fears the Perthbased Super Rugby franchise will definitely be axed. Reports were rife on Monday that the Force would be the Australian team to be cut if Sanzaar reduces the competition to a 15-team format. The ARU rung Force chief executive Mark Sinderberry to assure him the reports were false, with Pulver adamant the ARU are yet to decide on the matter. “At this point, there has been no determination on the future competition format or the teams involved in the competition,” Pulver said.

Liam Messam is a long-time fixture at the Chiefs Super Rugby franchise.

Messam is cognisant of the fact the Chiefs were scrappy in the 27-14 victory over the Rebels.

He feels “nailing the little details” will serve them well against the lowly Bulls, who are at 1-3 and 14th on the convoluted log.

Messam is the seventh player to reach 150 Super Rugby games, but just the fourth, after Wyatt Crockett, Keven Mealamu and Corey Flynn to do so for one team.

Ma’a Nonu, for three franchises, is the other Kiwi player to hit the 150.

Coach Dave Rennie has No 8 Michael Leitch back from suspension, so should be able to field his full strength loose forward trio.

He says Messam’s achievement is “phenomenal.”

“The guys gasp every time we name our team. It’s written how many caps he’s got.

“When some of these guys have just two or three, it’s hard to fathom.

“He’s a passionate Chiefs man and hugely respected by his team-mates and the fans, so we’re keen to put in the sort of performance that is worthy of that,” Rennie says.

“I don’t have to say as much when Liam is around.

“He brings passion and guys stand up and listen.”

New Zealand have named an Under 20 squad that should be good enough to annex the Oceania championship on the Gold Coast in a few weeks. Luke Jacobson is skipper, but one of the standout features is that Hurricanes utility Jordie Barrett is vice-captain. On that basis, the Hurricanes’ April 21 clash in Napier against the Brumbies will be his final run with the franchise before linking up with the Under 20s, for whom he played seven games at second five in 2016. Suspended over drugs Joakim Noah of the New York Knicks has been suspended 20 games without pay for violating the league’s anti-drug policy. Swimmers in top form

Ashburton swimmers have exceeded expectations and produced some outstanding results at the National Age Group Championships in Wellington over the weekend.

Six members of the Jennian Homes Ashburton Swimming Squad travelled north to compete at the championships and a

bronze medal to Bree Middleton was the highlight of the week.

Middleton was in great form in the pool, making the top 10 in four of her five events.

In the 200 metre freestyle final she produced an effort seven seconds better than her heat to finish in the bronze position.

She also finished fourth in the 100 metre freestyle, fifth in the 800 metre freestyle and sixth in

the 400 metre freestyle and also produced a personal best time in the 400 metre individual medley.

Rikuya Shibahara was also in hot form, making the finals in the 400 metre freestyle, 200 metre butterfly, 100 metre butterfly and 400 metre individual medley, picking up personal best times in the latter two events.

Josh Giles, who qualified for the championships through his

efforts at the Division Two finals, gained himself another personal best time in the 100 metre freestyle while went close to doing the same in the both the 50 metre and 200 metre backstroke.

Other squad members, Jared Scammell, Bailey Tait and Courtney Elliot all competed strongly as well against some of the best young swimming talents in New Zealand.

Team New Zealand are still undecided over whether they will take part in organised practice racing sessions against their America’s Cup rivals in Bermuda next month. A controversial late rule change earlier this month granted teams the ability to race in an organised fashion at the Cup venue in Bermuda during nominated windows. The first racing window was held over the weekend, with all five Bermudabased teams taking part. - NZME

Crows’ need for speed Adelaide have taken just one AFL game to dispel the biggest knock on their side, Crows wingman David Mackay says. Adelaide’s resounding season-opening win against Greater Western Sydney was built around a fleet of speedy onballers – a facet many pundits doubted the Crows possessed.

The New Zealand-trained filly floundered in the Rosehill mud on Saturday and it was instead left to two graduates of Phoenix Park’s 2015 NZB Premier Yearling Sale draft to fight out the finish.

In a race marred by interference, it was the High Chaparral filly Montoya’s Secret who held out the late-finishing daughter of Savabeel, Nurse Kitchen.

“It was a fantastic result, and so exciting,” Dunlop said.

While both fillies were catalogued to sell at Karaka, only Montoya’s Secret went through the ring, with Nurse Kitchen being withdrawn before the sale.

“Montoya’s Secret was bred by Rosemont Stud so it was great to get the result for Anthony Mithen,” Dunlop said of the $130,000 yearling buy.

The Group One result also provided further proof that the

Nicoletta has been put aside after a completing a rewarding summer and autumn campaign. The Murray Baker and Andrew Forsmantrained Savabeel filly won the Gr.3 Desert Gold Stakes, finished runner-up in the Sir Tristram Fillies’ Classic and ran fourth in both the Gr.3 Lowland Stakes and the Gr.1 New Zealand Oaks. “She’s been very good all the way through and she’s spelling now,” said owner Lib Petagna’s racing manager Bruce Perry.

Another of the Savabeel progeny Rosa Carolina, who notched her second win on Saturday, has also come within inches of black type when fourth in the Listed Crockett Stakes at Moonee Valley

in October and has black-type aims this campaign.

“We prepare 10 or 12 yearlings for the NZB Premier Sale each season so it is an especially good result out of that draft,” Dunlop said.

“It was one of the better lines of fillies I’ve had with lovely physical types.

“Samara Dancer was a fantastic type. We sold her half-brother too, the stakes-winning Eclair Big Bang.

“Storytime looks as though

she will carry on with it.

“Gold Rush was So You Think’s first stakes winner and her mother is obviously a good broodmare as she has left three stakes winning two-year-olds.”

In addition to the fillies from the 2015 draft Dunlop has high hopes for one of the male brigade.

The Cape Blanco gelding Don Blanco was a $50,000 purchase for Byerley Park-based trainer Karen Zimmerman and has showed promise in a six start career. Don Blanco has broken maiden ranks and ran fourth in the Listed Wanganui Guineas.

“He will go on to be a good older horse. He needed time and Karen has handled him so well,” she said.

Dunlop was pleased with the results of her 2017 Karaka Premier Sale draft, with a top price of $400,000 an average of $232,000, along with a high clearance rate through the Premier and Select sessions.

Rather than resting on her laurels, she is now looking towards the 2018 round of yearling sales and seeking expressions of interest from those wanting to be part of the Phoenix Park draft.- NZME

Le Romain draws eight Doncaster Mile favourite Le Romain has drawn well in barrier eight for the $3 million race. A field of 20 plus three emergencies has been declared for Saturday’s timehonoured race. Melbourne filly I Am A Star will start from the inside alley while Tosen Stardom has the outside gate.

NZ on cusp of victory

By Andrew Alderson New Zealand is on the verge of posting their fifth win in 45 tests against South Africa at Hamilton, and squaring the series 1-1.

The Proteas are 80 for five at stumps on the fourth day of the third test in Hamilton, still burdened by a 95-run deficit with a day to play.

The weather forecast suggests rain will arrive this afternoon, but such reports have been wrong before during this contest.

Rain was predicted yesterday but the only damage was a few grey clouds graffiti-ing blue sky.

South Africa’s lowest score against New Zealand is 148 at Johannesburg in December 1953, a test remembered more for tragedy striking Bob Blair via the loss of his fiancé in the Tangiwai disaster, and a cricket ball striking Bert Sutcliffe on his soon to be bandaged skull.

Despite the absence of spearheads Trent Boult and Tim Southee, the Black Caps bowlers were in their pomp, ploughing through the visitors’ second innings with relish.

Colin de Grandhomme and Matt Henry bowled nagging lines, Neil Wagner bristled with aggression and Jeetan Patel farmed doubt with his guile.

That was supplemented by a cacophony around the bat which almost needed a noise-control call out as the decibels mounted with the wickets.

De Grandhomme removed Dean Elgar caught behind at the end of the sixth over.

The early line and length delivered by himself and Henry was rewarded. Elgar wafted his bat

Kane Williamson is well on his way to becoming New Zealand’s best-ever batsman. towards a ball which held its line outside off stump.

The pivotal moment came when Theunis de Bruyn was run out from a mix-up with Hashim Amla.

New Zealand’s execution was more melee than military parade, but had the same effect. Captain Kane Williamson looked in two minds as to which end to throw as the batsmen conducted their impromptu waltz. He eventually shovelled the ball to B-J Watling who bunny-hopped it into the stumps.

Amla looked agitated in the aftermath as he built a partnership with Jean-Paul Duminy.

New Zealand butchered two decision reviews with mistaken caught behinds off the latter – one apiece from Henry and Wagner – but the momentum could not be restrained.

Amla soon flashed a cut off

Patel. The ball ricocheted off Watling’s gloves but de Grandhomme recalibrated his eyeline to deal with the deflection.

That had the visitors floundering at 49 for three in the 21st over.

Worse followed as they lost three wickets for 10 runs in 41 balls.

A Patel ball held its line against Duminy who shouldered arms as it kissed off stump. Temba Bavuma played loosely to edge Henry behind, leaving his side at 59 for five.

Faf du Plessis and Quinton de Kock saw them to stumps, but the position is tenuous.

Earlier, New Zealand were dismissed for 489 in reply to the Proteas’ 314.

Williamson’s 176 from 285 balls was the second highest score by a New Zealand batsman against South Africa, only bettered by Stephen Fleming’s

262 at Cape Town in 2006.

The innings was pivotal in giving the hosts the ascendancy, something difficult to predict after capitulating inside three days at Wellington.

The New Zealand captain hooked Morne Morkel to Vern Philander at long leg after a tenure of 449 minutes across 98.4 overs.

Winning the test always appeared at the forefront of his mind.

He received assistance from Mitchell Santner (41 from 151 balls) in an 88-run fifth-wicket stand. De Grandhomme (57 off 70 balls) contributed a late cameo with his highest test score.

His innings added valuable punch, given Santner and Williamson exited prior to lunch.

Santner pushed at a ball from Kagiso Rabada, who gave him some uncomfortable moments.

Duminy took the catch at gully.

The first session was about bedding in for New Zealand.

There were only two boundaries in the first 65 minutes, both

by Santner off Rabada.

One was a clip through square leg, the other an uncontrolled hook to fine leg. His most attacking stroke came shortly after drinks when he used his feet to loft Keshav Maharaj back over his head.

Morkel (four for 100 from 36.1 overs) and Rabada (four for 122 from 34 overs) were the pick of the bowlers, but they had to toil hard for those rewards.

This is the 16th time New Zealand and South Africa have met in a series.

Aussies crushed in Indian series decider Australia’s bid for a rare test series win in India, so full of promise during the past six weeks, was snuffed out when they suffered an eight-wicket belting early on day four of the Dharamsala decider.

Steve Smith’s side threatened to complete Australia’s second test series win in India since 1969 after shocking the top-ranked side during the series opener in Pune.

genuinely threaten to snatch victory.

The top-ranked test side resumed at 0-19, requiring a further 87 runs to reclaim the Border-Gavaskar trophy.

It could well have been a nailbiting finish if the visitors had not suffered collapses of 3-21, 2-5 and 3-1 on the preceding day, but they didn’t have anywhere near enough runs to play with. - AAP

Part of that involves training with the men, the Chiefs, to be precise. The 30-year-old Manawatu outside back, on leave this week from her day job as a policewoman in Palmerston North, will be with the franchise until Thursday before joining a Black Ferns training camp in Auckland.

German Kerber, the top seed, cruised by Japanese qualifier Risa Ozaki 6-2 6-2 while Czech second seed Pliskova beat 15th-seeded compatriot Barbora Strycova 6-1 6-4.

Ashburton College rowers are in a great position to push for outstanding results at the Maadi Cup on Lake Karapiro.

With two days of competition done and dusted, the 16-strong squad have six heat wins next to their name already and the potential to go big in some of the events judging by their comparative times with their rivals.

Rowing superstar Veronica Wall is again leading the Ashburton College charge and made her mark on the championships early on in proceedings.

She won her girls’ under 17 single sculls event by a massive 33 seconds and was 13 seconds faster than anyone else in the event.

She then returned to the single boat and won her under 18 girls’ single sculls heat beating fellow Ashburton College rower, Grace Wilson in the process.

her closest rival in the under 18 girls’ division with Wilson’s time 26 seconds behind Wall.

The pair then combined forces to record the fastest time in the heats of the girls’ under 18 doubles sculls event finishing 10 seconds faster than anyone else.

The winning didn’t stop there, with Mollie Gibson winning her heat of the girls’ under 16 single sculls, posting the third fastest time overall, leaving her in a good position to push forward in the semi-finals and then, all going well onto the final.

sculls Haxby Hefford and Harrison Davies picked up second placings in their heats respectively, registering the 11th and ninth fastest times of the division.

The pair then combined to finish second in the boys’ under 17 double sculls, recording the 10th fastest time.

College’s star under 16 coxed quad sculls team of Laura Biggs, Mollie Gibson, Emma Stagg, Katie Donlan and Emma Jansen finished second in their heat as well with their time of 7:09.62 the fifth fastest time of the heats.

Yesterday the crews returned

to the water and Ashburton College was to the fore early on in proceedings.

Veronica Wall teamed up with Olivia Gibson, Grace Wilson, Mollie Gibson and Emma Jansen to smash it out in their heat, recording the fastest time overall and moving them into favourite to win their way through to the final.

Mollie Gibson and Emma Stagg then matched that effort in the under 16 girls’ double sculls later in the morning to win their heat in the seventh fastest time overall.

In the boys’ under 18 coxed four, Wyatt Burrows, Artem Kravchenko, Caleb Pierre, Jared Mattson and Patrick Dekker finished second in their heat with the 11th fastest time overall.

Students are back in action today throughout the day’s racing with the quarter-finals of the under 17 single sculls expected to be a major highlight of the day’s racing.
