In less than 24 hours, Ashburton College student Mitchell Farr is going from waiting on the wings to receive his cap for the Mid Canterbury Combined 1st XV, to waiting in the wings at the Globe Theatre in London. A recurring shoulder injury has meant that Farr is set to receive his cap should he take to the field in their game against Timaru Boys’ High School today, but it has come with an unfortunate clash. He departs for England with the Big Little Theatre Company trip on the same day. “It is gonna be pretty tight,” he
said. “I will get home from the after-ball and try and get as much sleep as possible and get ready for rugby. “I have got to be careful not to get injured as I don’t want to be injured before jetting across the world.” The trip to the United Kingdom will see 15 members spending three weeks learning all things to do with Shakespeare, including a visit to the Globe Theatre in London, where they will perform on the stage. While rugby and the theatre can often be seen as worlds apart, Farr says he thinks it is a strength to have a mix of both in his life.

“It is good to have a mix of keeping active and having a creative side,” he said. “I have done plenty of Shakespeare in the past. I was part of a group a few years ago that was doing a grade six or seven exam in Shakespeare and we got a distinction and the highest result in that category in the world.” While getting the chance to travel across the world and work with some of the best Shakespeare practitioners in the world was a massive achievement, Farr said receiving his cap would also be something memorable. “It is something I have been working towards for two years
and it is a big thing, but I am also fortunate to get the opportunity to travel to the other side of the world.” Battling it out against some of the top schoolboy rugby teams in the country can be a challenge, but Farr said the team face the challenge with positivity. “The team has gelled really well this year and everyone gets on,” he said. “When you’re in a tough competition like that it could be easy to fall apart and take it out on each other. “There are plenty of positives to take from each week and just as much to work on.”
Police are urging the community to be vigilant around this time of the year when burglaries tend to spike in the Canterbury region. Canterbury Police will be actively targeting offenders involved in burglaries in the coming months, but the public is advised to take precautions to protect their property. Police state that members of the public should remember to always lock up their properties, including doors and windows, install good quality locks, keep shrubs and trees trimmed to avoid giving burglars places to hide, and make sure keys don’t have your address or any other personal details on them. “We know that burglaries spike around this time of the year, so now is the time to get prepared,” said Canterbury Metro’s Area Manager Prevention, Inspector Leairne Dow. “If you are burgled, it’s much easier for Police to return your property to you if it’s easily identifiable – so it’s a good idea to identify and mark your valuables. “If you engrave your high-value items or write down serial numbers, they’re much easier to be traced back to you.” Anyone is able to record serial numbers and other unique identifying details of their valuable goods in an electronic database. Members of the public are encouraged to register their goods at the Operation SNAP website where there is also more information available.

Tiller takes on head coach role By Erin Tasker

When Jack Tiller left school he wanted to make tennis his job, and he’s done just that, although not in the way he first intended. His dream was to be a top player, but he quickly realised that the tennis playing world was going to be incredibly tough to break into, so instead he turned his attention to coaching. It’s a decision that he now rated as one of the best he’d made, and it was one that had led him to Ashburton. Tiller – who stands at a towering 2.286 metres (6 foot 7 inches) tall – has just been appointed as the new head coach for Mid Canterbury Tennis, a role he’ll officially start when school returns for term three. And the 21-year-old can’t wait to sink his teeth into it. Tiller grew up largely in Christchurch, and completed his secondary schooling at St Bede’s where played both tennis and rugby, as a first-five. But tennis was where his passion lay, so when the opportunity arose to head to the US on a tennis scholarship when he finished school, he jumped at it. It was an incredible experience, but after a year-and-a-half he returned home for a break and unexpectedly received a job offer. That job was the head coach position at the Redcliffs and Mt Pleasant tennis clubs. He was faced with a huge decision. Did he return to America and continue pursuing his playing dream, or stay home and head down the coaching path? He chose coaching, and it turned out to be the right choice. “The way I look at it now, everything has sort of fallen into place,” Tiller said. He’d come full circle in a way. Although he now plays premier tennis in Christchurch out of the Elmwood club, the Redcliffs club is where Tiller first picked up a tennis racquet at the age of about five. One of his earliest tennis memories was heading along with his

He used that memory in his own tennis coaching, trying to put people at ease and make it a fun experience for those he was teaching. Tiller knows just how important good coaching is. He said as a player he wasn’t naturally gifted. He had to work hard to get to the point of earning the scholarship that took him to south-eastern Oklahoma state when he left school. It was his own experience growing up, and time spent in the US college system, that led to him discovering his passion for coaching. “I wanted to be a top tennis player first, but once you get overseas ... you think you’re pretty
good here, but then you get overseas and you find there’s a whole bunch of people who can hit a good tennis ball,” Tiller said. He said the opportunity to be the head coach in Mid Canterbury was huge. He described the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre as one of the best tennis complexes in the South Island and said he is keen to build on the incredible platform left by his predecessor. Tiller is taking over from Andre van Rooyen, who resigned a few weeks ago following a shock cancer diagnosis, and van Rooyen said Tiller has his full support. He said as a younger coach, Tiller will relate well to the younger players coming through both the Hot Shots and Ace programmes.

“I am confident that he will build sound relationships with the schools and continue to attract new players to the game,” van Rooyen said. In Mid Canterbury, and thanks largely to the work of van Rooyen and the wider Mid Canterbury Tennis team, Tiller said there are good systems already in place and he knows he’ll have supportive people around him as he looks to continue the growth of tennis in the district. He wants to give every kid in Mid Canterbury the chance to pick up a tennis racquet and give it a go, whether they found it was for them in the long run, or not. “No matter who it is, whether they are a kid that’s first walking in and looking to get one red ball
over a little net, or if it’s an Ace squad member who’s looking at winning a national title, your job is to try and help them reach their goals,” Tiller said. He has big dreams for the district. He is looking forward to getting into schools, but said he’d also love to get a good adults programme going, because tennis is a great sport to be involved in at any age, whether you played competitively, or just socially. “I don’t just want to be a coach that’s better than the neighbouring club. I want to be a coach that’s one of the best in New Zealand and I don’t want to limit myself,” Tiller said. “And I think that here is a good long-term opportunity to be able to do that.”

Shakespeare can be boring, but not if you stand on your feet and put your heart and soul into it. So says Big Little Theatre Company director Jackie Heffernan, who will today fly out to England with the 15 members of her Big Little Theatre Company senior school, for the Shakespearian experience of a lifetime. “I think it has to be done on its feet,” she said of reading plays penned by the bard. “I think a lot of kids are put off because they are made to pore over it, and it feels like a dead drudge, but it’s huge fun.” Shakespeare was the voice of the common people in his day, with the theme of his plays just as relevant today. “It’s for everybody, and I think it does reach out to everybody, it’s a real treasure trove.” Her two daughters Elise, 17, and Esme, 13, are among the 15 young thespians preparing for the trip, and they agree on the relevance of Shakespeare today. “It’s so old now, but I think it’s beautiful, I don’t think most kids appreciate how beautiful it is,” Elise said. Scientists and the Department of Conservation (DOC) are appealing to Mid Canterbury beachgoers to report sightings of southern right whales, or tohorā. The whales are a rare but increasingly regular visitor to New Zealand’s shores, after being driven almost to extinction by whaling in the 19th and 20th centuries. Sightings of tohorā begin around matariki in June and are possible almost anywhere during the winter months from Southland to Northland. Researchers at the University of Auckland and University of Otago, alongside DOC, are asking for reports of sightings, as they investigate the marine mammals’ genetic makeup and track their population growth. Sightings can be reported at the DOC hotline 0800 DOCHOT/0800 36 24 68, and if possible, take photos. DOC staff will then endeavour to get their own photos and collect skin samples for genetic analysis.
Bovis notices rise Four new farms in the Ashburton District received a notice of direction in the past week restricting animal movement under the mycoplasma bovis eradication programme. MPI says that 24 farms in the district are now under notice, while 68 notices have been revoked since the programme began a year ago. Eighty farms are under active surveillance. Of the 25 farms that have been confirmed with the cattle disease, 20 have been cleared while five remain active and in the process of depopulation and disinfection. Nationally, there are 176 confirmed properties (34 active), 239 under notice and 613 under surveillance.

The first public meetings about a management plan to raise flows in the Ashburton River and review irrigation consents connected to the river will be held on July 16. The plan, to be implemented by Environment Canterbury, will be tricky as consent holders face tougher abstraction conditions aimed at raising minimum flows in the Ashburton River during summer. Ashburton Water Zone Committee deputy chairman Chris Allen will be one of the farmers affected and he said reviewing all consents connected to the river at the same time was fair. Currently conditions can only be reviewed when a consent is renewed, which does not create a level playing field for all those who rely on water to irrigate. The Ashburton River Management Plan aims to raise the minimum flow to six cumecs at the State Highway 1 bridge by 2023. The zone committee has asked ECan to outline how it will implement the plan at the public meetings and is encouraging Mid Canterbury people to attend. Allen, who farms between the two branches of the river, said management plans for the river had been first discussed in 1983 and there had been much uncertainty for farmers over the years. The zone committee has asked ECan to apply its latest scientific findings to the river, as some data collected about the river was more than 10 years old. The management plan looks

Some farmers have already swapped surface consents for groundwater consents, at the committee’s encouragement. Allen said it was not fair or equitable for consents to be reviewed as they expired in this situation. Those with earlier expiration dates would be shouldering most of the change, when it was fairer for all to share the changes.
ECan is expected to reveal a timeline for implementing its river management plan and the review, along with its intent and vision, at the July 16 meetings. More targeted discussions will follow with the different groups affected. Allen said it was important the process was not rushed, but that it also did not end up as long and expensive as a consent review in Selwyn in the past decade. “A good process is better than a hurried process and farmers are
worried about it. I am worried about it. I will be one of the affected parties, but having a river meet our community expectations is something we are all passionate about.” He said the Ashburton District Council no longer discharged treated sewage into the river and a woolscour that once did the same was no longer operational. The zone committee will be keeping a watching brief as to any particular parties who will be disproportionately affected.

So far successive frosts had not been that hard, only measuring 4°C at the most. There was about two-anda-half inches (approximately 6.5cm) of ice on the two ice-skating and one curling rink, but a good four inches, or 10cm, would
be required for opening. The facility can only open when conditions allow and last opened for a season four years ago. The MetService forecast over the next week shows some promise of more frosts. Meteorologist Gerrit Keyser
said yesterday the next three days would be frosty in Mid Canterbury. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday would still be cold, although not frosty, and there would be showers on Thursday. Frosts would return from Friday to Sunday.

Finding insurance cover could become a difficult – and expensive business for the Ashburton District Council. Council business support group manager Paul Brake said the quotes he had received for the council’s insurance for the coming year were significantly higher than budget and that reflected a changing environment where costs were likely to continue to rise, he said. He’s looking at an extra $137,000 on next year’s insurance bill and because budgets for the coming year were already signed off, he suggested the shortfall might have to be met by funds from the council’s disaster insurance account. He told councillors at Thursday’s meeting that he could not delay signing the insurance deal or the council would run the risk of being uninsured come July 1. “This is simply reflecting an increasingly difficult insurance market and going forward the council may have to accept the risk of not getting cover for some of its assets,” Brake said. When the council did its budget for next year it would need to take a pretty pessimistic, worst case scenario view when it looked at insurance costs, he said.

Motel site up for grabs at Lake Hood

It’s been 10 years in the making, but come August, Methven’s dogs will finally have a place they can call their own. Signing off the park, however, involved a long round of consultation, discussion and finally the decision on whether or not the park could go ahead was left in the hands of an independent commissioner. A resource consent was lodged in July 2010 and consent was granted the following year, but that consent came with a host of conditions that were so onerous the project ground to a halt. The people of Methven did not give up and over the following years they worked with the council to overcome obstacles that finally saw a notice of requirement to designate the site as a dog park lodged earlier this year. There’s a commercial opportunity just waiting to happen at Lake Hood, long-time resident Gary Casey said. Finding options and opportunities for that land is part of the Lake Hood Extension Project and as its project manager, Casey, said he’s keen to see some form of high-density accommodation, such as motels, on some of that land. With the range of on-water events now hosted at the lake and the growing interest in property purchases by out-of-towners, Casey said, the time was probably right for an accommodation complex to be built. Initially the site, near the Lakehouse Restaurant, was tagged for apartments. There are also other sites that can be used for commercial activities Housing development was continuing at pace, Casey said, with new stages in the lake extension regularly opening up and sections selling steadily.

Comings, goings at the Beehive M
ust be something in the air; National on Tuesday, Labour on Thursday. But in the shadows, the substantial figure of Christopher Luxon waiting – we are reliably informed – to pounce on the unsuspecting Simon Bridges, devour him in two easy chomps and assume the leadership of the National Party. The post-Key drift to nowhere is, apparently, on borrowed time. There’s a business icon ready to take over the National wheel, the “rock star”, direct from stupendously successful, Air New Zealand, Chris – I imagine, to his friends – Luxon. Well that might all be a trifle breathlessly premature but the appearance in the political mix of a man of Luxon’s glittering credentials, making no secret of his leadership ambitions, must send shivers down the spine of current, official and would-be, office holders. “Buzzy Bee” Bridges, for example, is likely to be seriously discombobulated by the spectre of a man of such substance wanting his job and unaccustomed to not getting what he wants. The position of Bridges becomes more precarious as each

day passes. Even without the presence of this latest, menacing elephant in the room, the current leader of the National Party is already playing second fiddle to “Crusher” Collins. In the absence of a “National Jacinda”, Judith may be thought to be the next best thing. Possible rival, the hard-working, Amy Adams, after 12 years of tireless commitment to the cause, is giving up the struggle and returning to the family farm near Darfield. National will undoubtedly miss her; her grasp of the financial portfolio has always been impressive, as have been her dealings with an inquisitive media. Good luck to Paul Goldsmith, who is to replace her. A scenario that could have developed last year – but didn’t – might have had Adams defeating Bridges for the party leadership but for reasons now – and then
– hard to fathom, Simon Bridges was thought the better bet. I am prepared to wager there are numbers of Nats who now greatly regret the votes they cast at the time. Faafoi is a coming man well on the way to arrival. Meanwhile, the effervescent David Seymour is making steady progress towards having his End of Life bill enshrined in law. One thousand doctors may have taken out a prominent newspaper advertisement to express their opposition to this development but that did not stop the bill receiving a 70 to 50 pass rate at the second reading. More strenuous argument remains but Seymour may be about to bring off a victory which would make his performance in Dancing with the Stars seem even more tawdry than it was.

shburton has the potential to become the aviation capital of New Zealand, thanks to a museum that houses dozens of elderly and, in many cases, rare aircraft. And that’s a future that Ashburton Aviation Museum president Warren Janett is keen to see explored. It might have a low profile today, but the value of what is included in its collection has the potential to see it on the must-visit list for aviation enthusiasts worldwide. The collection of aircraft is unrivalled across New Zealand, with some in the collection one-offs, he said. Like many projects, the museum started small. It’s grown from the ground up and on the back of the enthusiasm and energy of a few. It’s taken more than 40 years of dreaming, planning and sheer hard work but today it is home to more than 40 aircraft as well as a vast collection of photos, models, medals and memorabilia. The museum owes its life to the enthusiasm of a 17-year-old schoolboy. In 1974 aviation enthusiast Peter McQuarters was keen to see an aviation society formed and a meeting was held. He was joined by eight others – all but one of whom are still on board. It would take many years, however, for the idea to become more than just a bunch of blokes who met to talk aviation. The ideas were there, the enthusiasm was there, but one of those stalwarts described the labour of love involved as like trying to push-start a 747. Key to the project was finding a site. Land in Tinwald was targeted. That was stymied by bureaucrats, but member numbers kept growing and then came an opportunity to buy its first aircraft – an RNZAF Harvard. The museum trust had just $153 in the bank. Undeterred it put in a bid, won and found itself scrambling to raise the $2500 needed. The community saved the day, raising the money in 24 days. Then reality hit. The museum team had an aircraft, but nowhere to display it; its first home was a lowly farm shed. That acquistion provided the impetus needed to kick-start a hangar fundraising campaign that involved everything from market stalls and raffles to cutting firewood, hay carting and to a public sponsorship project that sold off 2000 concrete blocks needed for the planned hangar. And along with the fundraising, the museum team continued to look for a site to call home. The Ashburtopn Airport was a logical contender and in 1984 construction started on that first hangar. Again it involved hours of voluntary time and plenty of recycled materials. Come August, 1990, the hangar was completed and by that time

the team’s collection had grown and the Harvard had plenty of company in the new building. Over the coming years the museum’s fleet grew and so did its historical value. Most aircraft arrived needing restoration work and that kept volunteers busy most weekends, but it also kept the club spirit high, Warren said. Inevitably another hangar was needed and the museum team mounted their largest campaign yet, one that resulted in the construction of what is now known as
the super hangar. Again, a project that involved huge community input. Now that hangar is full and they’re eyeing up more land for yet another place to house some of New Zealand’s rare and exceptional retired aircraft, he said. When you look back over the many years the aviation museum has been in the growing and the making, you start to get a true appreciation of how much has been achieved by so few, Warren said. “We’re self-funding and we’re
run purely by volunteers, and when you look at what we’ve got we have to thank a lot of locals. There’s a lot of very generous community spirit.” Over the years the museum team had become something of a family, with many turning up most days to work, share their knowledge with visitors, or just to chat with one another about the big love in their lives, elderly aircraft. There are around 30-35 regulars who turn up most days to potter
and to take a turn at being front person in the museum. For them there’s a real pride in seeing visitors enjoy the displays of aircraft and in sharing their own knowledge, Warren said. The museum is open daily between 1pm and 3pm and from 10.30am at weekends. Anyone wanting to visit outside those hours can make arrangements and there’ll usually be someone happy to open up. Today there are around 40 aircraft on display, along with

other aviation related items such as a model of the World War Two RNZAF base once housed at the airfield, model aircraft and a replica World War Two control tower. More are in bits and pieces under restoration and will eventually too be looking for display space. “Sometimes when something turns up we put our hands in our pockets to buy it. Then we raise some money and pay everyone back. We’ve done that for some time and it’s often the only way.” The museum is about more
than elderly aircraft, its super hangar is also an event centre and its popularity is growing, Warren said. “We’re getting more and more events and we can cater from 10 to 200 people. We’ve got it down to a fine art now.” The super hangar might be a good fundraiser when used as a venue, but for the museum team, where their hearts lie is with their aircraft and the museum. Their greatest challenge is letting the rest of the country know what
they’ve got and just how special it is in terms of aviation history, he said. “We’re giving back to the community the story of what New Zealand has done over 100 years of flight.” Warren and his team want the community to realise that the district is sitting on an aviation goldmine and it’s a goldmine they want to share. As a group they’re hoping to do more work with schools to encourage youngsters to devel-

op a love of aviation history and to appreciate what the museum contains. “You can’t value this and you can’t replace it,” Warren said. There’s always work to do, always projects in waiting and there’s always plenty of enthusiasm among the group, but to ensure the museum continues to grow, it’s important to get more people through the door, he said. He’s keen to see college-aged students involved and said the workshop provides a great oppor-
tunity for young people who enjoy tinkering with tools to learn about aviation. “But like a lot of organisations, our membership is ageing and we need more young people involved.” The group hosts a sport aviation fly-in biennially and that attracts hundreds of out-of-towners, but it’s the locals they’re after. An open day will be held in the spring to encourage those who haven’t visited before to check out the displays.

TSG sold for $1 billion By Andrea Fox New Zealand-based global payments solutions provider Transaction Services Group has sold most of the business to one of the world’s biggest private equity firms in what is thought to be a $1 billion-plus deal. Transaction Services (TSG) founder, Auckland businessman Murray Bolton, is understood to have retained a significant shareholding in the new arrangement. Bolton had a 50 per cent interest in TSG. TSG, whose legacy companies were founded about 20 years ago, is registered in the UK but has a New Zealand-based staff and directors and uses New Zealand-developed technology. The company provides business management software and integrated payments solutions to the health and fitness, entertainment, insurance, community clubs and childcare centre sectors.
In the past three years, TSG has more than doubled its revenue through growth and acquisitions. It operates in New Zealand, Australia and the UK with emerging customer bases in Japan, Europe and the US. Terms of the deal were not disclosed and no comment was available from the company, which announced the deal in a statement. However, the Herald understands the sale price was around the $1 billion mark. Advent International is a $50 billion private equity firm, with investment experience in the payments and software industries. In the past decade it has invested US$3.8b in 9 payments companies and $3.8b in six software companies around the world, the statement said. TSG chief executive Steven Holmes said in the statement the partnership with Advent would fund the next phase of its international expansion.

Apple shares plummet One of Apple’s biggest stars has announced his shock resignation – immediately causing shares to plunge. However deciding how to deal with this type of situation is complex, and many companies face a dilemma in how to respond after a celebrity endorser crisis. One factor to consider is the severity of the celebrity endorser’s crisis. If the crisis is of a relatively minor nature, the company should consider keeping the celebrity endorser.
For example, Nigella Lawson admitted in court to only occasional use of drugs. She also mentioned that this took place during very difficult periods in her life, including a nasty public divorce with her ex-husband Charles Saatchi. As a result of the situation, the public perceived Nigella’s crisis to be of a relatively minor nature, and people also had sympathy for her as a result of the circumstances. Unlike Whittakers’ case with Nigella Lawson, in certain situations the severity of the crisis is so great that a company needs to sever ties with the celebrity endorser in order to minimise the potential damage to the brand. A good example is Jared Fogle, a former celebrity spokesperson for the fast-food chain Subway. Fogle was well known for his weight loss, which he attributed to eating at Subway. Fogle was a very effective celebrity spokesperson for Subway, and he worked with the company for a number of years. Unfortunately for Subway, in 2015 the focus of the public shifted from Fogle’s weight loss to accusations against Fogle of child pornography. As a result of the crisis involving Fogle, the company quickly severed ties with its well-known celebrity spokesperson to protect the brand from a spill over effect. In addition to the severity of the celebrity endorser’s crisis, it is also important to consider the nature of the crisis. When a company hires a celebrity endorser, it hopes that certain positive attributes from the celebrity are transferred to the brand. In the case of star athletes and sportswear companies like Nike
and Adidas, a celebrity endorsement creates a situation whereby the public links the success of an athlete to the brand. When a crisis by the celebrity endorser is related to his or her performance as an athlete, the company should consider dropping the celebrity endorser. Many companies dropped Lance Armstrong after he admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs as a champion cyclist. This was the correct decision because when an athlete uses performance-enhancing drugs his achievements are tainted. This can also tarnish a brand associated with the athlete as well. If, on the other hand, the crisis is unrelated to the performance of the athlete, the company can be more forgiving. In fact, in many cases the company can continue working with the celebrity endorser. A celebrity endorser crisis can also be a crisis for a company working with the celebrity. Therefore, a company needs to assess the severity of the celebrity endorser crisis and the nature of the crisis before deciding whether to sever ties. The stakes for a company are very high. For many companies, the revenue from products linked to a celebrity endorser can be very significant. A good example is David Beckham who generates millions of dollars’ worth of revenue from the sale of sportswear for Adidas. By carefully assessing the situation, the company reduces the likelihood of keeping a celebrity endorser that should be dropped, or unnecessarily dropping a celebrity endorser that should be kept.

Editorial or opinion, you tell us I
f you haven’t got there yet, perhaps jump across a page and read the letter to the editor today from a host of local local professionals in regard to the right to a fair trial – then come back here. You won’t find much more clout to a public letter than the names attached to today’s letter, it’s backed by some of the biggest names in the business and full credit to them for coming together to make a stand on something. I can’t comment on the editorial in question as it wasn’t written by me and it would be unfair to pass judgement on the subject of that particular piece for that very reason. However, what I am willing to discuss is the position and, ultimately, what this very space is

used for and what it is perceived by you, our readers, as being. The page is tagged as being for the editorial of the newspaper of the day. The assumption, based on this tag, that this space is the newspaper’s overall stance is a common misconception. A misconception which has come about from historical viewpoints of what the particular space has been in the past, and what it is in many other publications. You will see in all major
newspapers across the world the editorial space used in each edition, but very rarely will you see a name or, as it is in our case, an image of the author assigned to the piece. Many of those same major newsrooms have one person whose role it is each day to produce the paper’s editorial for the next edition, they will spend the day writing and researching this and it will go through many hands before it makes it onto the page. They are often meticulously planned and void of opinion or colour – but take a broader look at a subject than what your traditional opinion piece might do. They are a long standing bastion of the newspaper industry, one of few consistent items
across editions and in major centres where things can be looked at a little more in-depth and wide-ranging. Here we probably look at the space a little differently – and it is, effectively by our own doing, still termed an editorial space when realistically it should be more described as opinion or the leader. Incidentally, as you see above, it does carry the tag of opinion at the top of the page, followed below it by the term Our View. It’s a little confusing and something we now need to look at to clarify and set firm indications in place for what the space stands for. This is something we will be looking to action immediately. But we would be happy to be led by the community and our
readers on what they want the space to be. If the desire is for more straight-laced styled editorials, then we would be happy to oblige and similarly if the people would prefer the space to become more of an opinion slot, then we’d oblige as well. In relation to the letter on the next page, I completely agree with all the comments made in the letter if this space is to be seen as the newspaper’s stance. However, should the space be seen as an opinion piece, which carries the name and image of an author, I therefore disagree with many of the comments because, in much that same way as our legal system allows everyone the right to a fair trial, society also allows everyone to an opinion and free speech.

God’s abundant generosity G
reetings, my name is Denis Nolan, I am one of the Catholic Priests, new to our local parish. Recently I’ve had cause to consider the abundant generosity of God to his creation, especially his people. I take up the story with the Old Testament people of the Exodus, and their dilemma in the desert with regard to food. This results in God via Moses, providing them with manna, a mysterious substance that appeared with the morning dew, the people had never experienced anything like it before, and were able to process it into a bread-like substance.

Quite literally bread from heaven, curiously enough this source of their daily bread ceased as they entered the Promised Land. In a recent reading of parts of Luke’s gospel chapter 9 I find the incident of the feeding of the five thousand. On being requested by his disciples to send the crowds away to fend for themselves, Jesus ventures, “feed them yourselves”. As He prays a blessing over the meagre resource’s five
loaves and two fish, the people seated in one hundred groups of about fifty or so, are able to eat as much as they wanted, and twelve baskets-full of left-overs were gathered. Also later in Luke’s gospel is the event of the wedding feast of Cana. The passage says that; ‘the mother of Jesus was there, together with Jesus and a number of his disciples’. Mary, Jesus mother declares; ‘they have no wine’. Jesus responds; ‘Woman what is that to me, my time has not yet come’. To which his mother directs the stewards; ‘Do whatever he tell you’. Jesus says, ‘fill the jars with water, draw some out now and take it to the
head steward’. In the doing of what they were instructed, the water had turned into a fine wine! In these bible recorded events, we find the goodness and generosity of God responding to requests from the dilemma of his people. God may not respond to us exactly in the way and time frame we would like him to. However when we put our hope in God, and approach him in a trusting and believing way, in the long run we will not be disappointed. YOUR VIEW Right to a fair trial The right to a fair trial is one of the fundamental tenets of our system of justice. It has been central to a fairly functioning judicial system for centuries. The premise being, that every person, regardless of their race, religion or creed, is entitled, on being charged with a criminal offence, to be heard by a court and have their guilt or innocence fairly determined by that court. In New Zealand that means that a person has the fundamental right to plead not guilty to a charge and have their guilt or innocence determined following a fair trial. It was disheartening in the extreme to see the Ashburton Guardian, in an editorial on June 15, argue that the fundamental right to a fair trial should be withheld in certain circumstances. The newspaper’s siren call was that a person who is so obviously guilty should lose their right to have their guilt or innocence determined at trial. The rationale goes that as they are so clearly guilty, then what is the point of spending thousands on their trial? But the question then becomes, who determines whether they are obviously guilty? The Minister for Justice, the local District Police Commander, the Crown Solicitor – or, indeed, the editor of the local newspaper? And then what do we mean by “obviously guilty”? Where does one draw the line? Is the Guardian content to live in a society where some innocent people are collateral damage, in the face of a reworked judicial system that saves money by denying the right to trial in certain cases? We currently live in a society that respects the fundamental precept that a person is inno-

Email us! cent until proven guilty. That is a long-cherished right and it is disturbing that in these times, a paper should advocate for the abolition of that right in certain cases. How long would it then be before a further erosion was advocated, and then another and another? We, the undersigned, all work within the judicial system and wholly reject the premise of your June 15 editorial. The events that occurred in Christchurch were truly horrifying. However, do we really win against such evil if we toss out our fundamental freedoms so easily? Final berth on the line By Christopher Reive As the Crusaders and Hurricanes prepare to battle for a spot in the Super Rugby final, squad consistency appears to have been a key word in both camps. The Crusaders will run out in Christchurch tonight with an unchanged 23 from the side who beat the Highlanders in the quarter-final, while the Hurricanes have made few changes to their starting squad from a week ago. While Vaea Fifita has returned from suspension, he’ll have to wait until the latter stages of the match to put his stamp on it, with coach John Plumtree opting to keep the starting locking combination of James Blackwell and Isaia Walker-Leawere, while Reed Prinsep, Ardie Savea and Gareth Evans maintain their spots in the second row. The only change to the run on side sees Salesi Rayasi line up on the wing in place of the injured Wes Goosen, while James Marshall returns on the bench from an elbow injury and Xavier Numia replaces Fraser Armstrong. United’s A fairytale return to the Mid Canterbury Netball premier one competition continued on Thursday night when they handed Celtic A just their second loss of the season. The 36-27 win over the defending champion Celtic side to finish round two of premier one meant that United A are now the surprise team to beat heading into the third and final championship round, with Celtic A having to settle for third on the round two table behind second placed College A. College A became the first team to beat Celtic A since 2017 last week, and the young school side followed that up with a commanding 36-16 win over Mt Somers on Thursday night. Mt Somers were one of two teams in danger of facing the promotion/relegation match waiting at the end of round two, but Methven A’s 38-24 loss to Hampstead A in the night’s other game meant the Methven side finished the round winless and at the bottom of the table, putting them into that match on Tuesday night. Just 12 months ago, at the end of round two in 2018, it was United A in that boat, and they lost that promotion/relegation match to Celtic B. They were sent packing down to premier two for the end of the 2018 season and the start of 2019, and they were devastated, but eager to earn their spot back, which they did at the first opportunity thanks to an unbeaten round one in premier two. That saw them automatically promoted to premier one for round two, and they haven’t looked back since, maintaining that unbeaten record for 2019. They had to fight for their latest win though, with Celtic A coming out strong, their pride potentially still a bit dented after that loss last week. Celtic A lost their goal shoot to an ankle injury in the opening exchanges, but that brought Sala Beuta into the game, returning from a five-week injury lay-off, and with her steady hands under the hoop Celtic A were out to a 9-3 lead at quarter-time.

United A coach Claire Tappin acted straight away, taking goal shoot Olivia McLennan off and moving Anna Edzes from goal keep to the shooting end, and it proved to be the right move. Edzes and Stacey Grant combined well in the United A attacking end and they started chipping away at Celtic’s lead, bringing it back to 15-13 by half-time and reducing Celtic’s lead to just one at the three-quarter mark, 21-20. The tide had well and truly turned and the final quarter was all United, as they wrapped up the win and the top placing on the leaderboard for round two.
Tappin said it was a sluggish start from her side, but the changes she made at quarter-time worked a treat. She said Libby Ross had an oustanding game at centre, but each of her players stepped up and stuck to their attacking game plan in that final quarter, while their defensive strategy combated Celtic’s attacking speed. It was a result well worth celebrating, but United A players no doubt spared a thought for the team that found themselves in the position they were in a year ago, Methven A. The Methven side went from
being a top contender in round one, to failing to pick up a win in round two, and they will now face the top team from premier two, Southern A, on Tuesday night in that dreaded promotion/relegation game. “It’s obviously disappointing finishing second in the first round and then sixth in this round. It’s not where we wanted to be, but we are and that’s a fact and it’s time on Tuesday to show that we deserve to still be in premier one,” Methven A coach Maree Firth said. Their opposition, Southern A, finished round two of premier two unbeaten on Thursday night,

getting past Ashburton College B 57-18. Down the other end of the table, Hampstead C are facing the other premier promotion/relegation game, going down 46-20 to Celtic B on Thursday night to finish the round winless. The other game of the night saw Hampstead B edge past Methven B 32-20. Hampstead C will now face Celtic C in the premier two promotion/relegation game on Tuesday night, and the premier grade championship rounds will then get under way next Thursday night.
Levi relishing on-court battle with Silver Ferns NZME

New Zealand’s latest sporting sensation is a big hit on social media. Really big. 2.14m to be precise. New Zealand Men’s goal shoot Junior Levi has been all the talk since lining up next to the Silver Ferns in Thursday night’s historic clash at Auckland’s Pulman Arena. The 29-year-old, who was referred to as the ‘man mountain’ throughout the game, towered over Silver Ferns defenders Jane Watson, Phoenix Karaka and Casey Kopua.
So much so that he’s become all the talk among global netball fans after the men claimed a 54-50 win over the Ferns. Unsurprisingly, Levi played both basketball and volleyball during his high school years before netball became his sport of choice in his final year of university. Five years on, Levi said it’s been the rules and structure of how netball is played which has seen him develop a love for the game. “It’s not like in basketball where I can be the LeBron James,” Levi said.
“In netball, I can only play goal shoot or I can only play goal keep, I can only do one or the other. “Everyone has to do their role in order for a positive result. “Netball is the purest team sport on the planet, there’s no sport like netball where you have to have all seven players do their job.” Netting 48 goals from 52 attempts, Levi made working the circle look like a piece of cake. But the Queensland-based netballer admitted it was no easy feat to come up against some of the
world’s best defenders and gave full credit to what he described as a Ferns unit on the rise. “Jane [Watson] did amazing and credit to her but more to those in front of her too,” Levi said. “Karen [Burger], Casey [Kopua] and Laura [Langman] did a really good job. I haven’t seen that from the Ferns in a while so just seeing that makes me really excited for them when it comes to the Netball World Cup.” The men are all but set to play in today’s Cadbury Netball Series grand final against the Silver Ferns.

Rakaia out to finish on top By Erin Tasker

If Rakaia beat Methven today they will earn themselves a home Watters Cup final. It’s a statement that, a few weeks ago, many followers of Mid Canterbury Rugby might not have expected, as Southern were shaping up as being the team most likely to find themselves in that position. But, Southern’s scenario today is much, much different. With no wins on the board heading into their round four clash with Hampstead today in the Mid Canterbury Rugby showpiece competition, they are entering must-win territory. Just four weeks ago, it was a different story. Southern were preparing for a Combined Country Cup competition final against Glenmark in Omihi, which ended in a dramatic draw, and they were viewed by most as the team to beat in the local competition. But Southern’s season had since hit a couple of major speed bumps. They had the bye in round one of the Watters Cup, before suffering surprise losses to both Methven and Rakaia. Southern coach Andrew Carr said his players had put themselves in a position which they now needed to get themselves out of. “We’ve made our bed, we have got to lie in it.” Carr said in both those losses, Southern played well in the first half to hold handy leads at halftime. But for two weeks running they’d been out-passioned, and outplayed in the second 40, and that was unacceptable, he said. Their opposition today, Hampstead, would have taken note of that. Hampstead, too, had struggled for periods in the second halves of their losses to Rakaia and Celtic, so no matter what the scoreboard reads at half time today, neither side will be out of it. Southern needs to win today, and then beat Celtic next week, to even be a finals contender, and it is a similar story for Hampstead. They needed to beat Southern, then Methven next week, to be finals contenders, although the bigger picture is a bit more complicated for them. Hampstead are now well into

their tenth season without a single Watters Cup win, and while a much improved effort in the combined competition and a lot of hard yards put in both on and off the pitch had many picking 2019 would be the year the drought would break, to do that against Southern or Methven will require a mammoth effort. Hampstead coach Shaun Bovey said Southern will be hurting from those two losses, and out to redeem themselves. “They aren’t going to want to go from the Luisetti final, to being the first team to lose to Hampstead in 10 years.” He said his side should not be written off though. “I think we are up against it, but nothing is impossible,” Bovey said. On the Watters Cup leaderboard, Southern and Hampstead
are in exactly same position. They are joint at the bottom with just three bonus points each to their names. The team with the bye this week – defending champions Celtic – are in the middle of the points table with five points to their name after their win over Hampstead last weekend, while Rakaia and Methven are up the other end, both unbeaten. Rakaia have three wins to their names, while Methven have two, as they are coming into this weekend fresh off the bye. The bye awaits Rakaia in the final round next weekend, and they’d love nothing more than to go into that break secure in their spot in the finals. If they win today, they will do just that. If Methven win though, it will all come down to the last round,
where Rakaia’s fate would be in the hands of Methven and their final round opponents, Hampstead. For Methven, last weekend’s bye came at a good time. It was the mid-point of the competition, and a chance for a few of their walking wounded to recover, and they would love to return to action with a win today. But standing in their way is a Rakaia side determined to make it through to the big dance, after missing out last season. Rakaia were last year in a similar position to the one Southern had got themselves into this season, having made the final of the combined competition – which they lost to Waihora – and then not even making the Watters Cup final. The Watters Cup format saw the top team at the end of the
round robin go straight through to the final, while second and third played off in a semi-final. Last year Celtic went straight through, while Southern and Rakaia played off in a dramatic semi-final, which Southern won just a week after losing to Rakaia in the round robin. Some might call it a curse, the fact that teams that did well in the combined competition seemed to struggle when it came time for the local competition, but ask any coach and they will tell you it was a case of teams stepping it up a notch when it came to playing fellow local teams. “Every team is playing well. “The local competition has a lot of mana and people just seem to lift for it,” Southern’s Carr said. “The Watters Cup never lets you down. There’s always some good games of footy.”
Gatland’s coaching deal a massive concession, says Marshall NZME New Zealand Rugby have made a “massive concession” by appointing Warren Gatland as Chiefs coach, according to former All Black Justin Marshall. Gatland has signed a four-year deal to return to the Waikato for the 2020 Super Rugby season but will be released next August to coach the British and Irish Lions,
before returning to New Zealand for the 2022 and 2023 Super Rugby campaigns. Marshall said New Zealand Rugby won’t be happy about the special terms of Gatland’s contract, but it was the right play to make. “It’s a massive concession,” Marshall said. “The New Zealand Rugby Union have not often given too much leniency when it involves helping
the rest of the world. “And to an extent that’s what Warren Gatland will be doing. “There’s also a bit of information from New Zealand Rugby that he’ll be taking with him. “They won’t be happy about it, but they see the value of having him here, and are prepared to concede that to let him go and coach the Lions and bring a bit of the skillset, information, ideas
into the Lions camp, which educates players from the northern hemisphere. “But they still see there’s more value in having him in New Zealand than not, so they’re prepared to let the rope out a little bit. “I think that’s brilliant. “We’ve got to move with the future, and we’ve got to look at the overall picture rather than the short-term one.
“This is showing more compassion.” The 55-year-old Gatland is calling time on more than a decade as Wales head coach after this year’s World Cup in Japan and has already been confirmed as the next British and Irish Lions coach to tour South Africa in 2021. Marshall said Gatland will help create a successful culture that will lure players to Hamilton.

Craighead on fire in Methven After copping a hiding from Timaru Girls’ High School (TGHS) a week prior, Craighead arrived at the Methven Domain a girls’ rugby team on a mission on Wednesday night. They took their frustrations out on the AshHutt girls, handing the Ashburton College and Mount Hutt College combined side a 57-5 loss. The night didn’t start so bad, though, coach Grant Elvines said. For once, his side started well with a long period of possession and territory, but they found out just how good the Craighead backline was pretty quickly. The Craighead backs taught the AshHutt girls a valuable lesson on straight, hard running, drawing and passing, and how to get the ball to the outside backs as quickly as possible. “Our backs played well, but were no match for what was an exceptionally well-drilled group of girls,” Elvines said. The AshHutt forwards had the measure of their counterparts, especially at scrum-time, and were more than competitive at rucks and mauls, but no matter how many tackles they made there was always another Craighead jersey on hand to carry the movement on. Elvines said the midfield pairing of Olivia Bishop and Jorja Johnston produced a strong performance, especially on defence, and halfback Isabelle Talbot distributed the ball well, at times under a lot of pressure. The AshHutt tight five had probably their best game of the season, shining in the set piece, and there was no loss of momentum when reserve locks Georgia Middleton and Margret Eli came off the bench, with Eli scoring AshHutt’s only try of the night. Elvines said loose forward Grace Bleach was again like a puppy with two tails and her enthusiasm for the game was contagious, while captain Aidan Elvines led her troops from the front, again topping the tackle count. “The pleasing thing as a coach

In brief Squash nationals Ashburton squash player Katrina Palmer is in Auckland this weekend competing at the New Zealand Senior Nationals. The nationals got under way last night at the National Squash Centre and will run through until tomorrow. All up there’s four players from the Midlands Squash district (Mid Canterbury down to North Otago) in action this weekend, with Mid Canterbury’s sole representative Palmer joined by Timaru’s Lily Rae and Thomas Pickles, and Oamaru’s Keidah Bungard.
Barbarians come home It’s been a long time since they played at home in front of their home fans, but today the Ashburton Barbarians will bring rugby league back to Robilliard Park. It’s been well over a month since the Barbarians had a home match in the Canterbury Rugby League division one competition, for various reasons. But today they’re finally home, hosting the Woolston Rams at 2pm.
Keeping the run going Mid Canterbury United will look to keep their unbeaten record in the Mainland Football division one competition going when they host the CTFC Turtles at the Ashburton Domain this afternoon at 2.30pm. It’ll be a big afternoon at the domain, with MCUFC’s division five side also home, against the FC Twenty 11 Memes at 2.30pm. Methven FC’s Seniors are on the road to the Halswell United Bills in division three, while the Methven FC Reserves in division six are home to the FC Twenty 11 Army at the Methven Domain at 2.30pm.

It was a sad night for the AshHutt side, as they said farewell to Mount Hutt College’s Tyla Harraway, who was playing in her final match for the side. Elvines said Harraway had been a real warrior in the team
for the past three years and she would be sorely missed, but the team wished her well. Life wasn’t about to get any easier for AshHutt, with their next match being against the top of the table TGHS side. That game will be played at the Ashburton Celtic grounds at 4.30pm this Wednesday. Meanwhile Mid Canterbury Combined will run out onto the Ashburton College field for
their final time in this year’s UC Championship today. They’re playing Timaru Boys’ High School in the Crusaders region secondary schools’ rugby championship game, which will kick off at midday. The Mid Canterbury Combined boys are yet to win a game this season, while TBHS haven’t fared much better, with just two victories from their eight outings.
Hampstead are proving a force to be reckoned with in round two of the Mid/South Canterbury senior women’s hockey competition, and if they keep their momentum up today they’ll earn themselves some silverware. They’re up against top team Geraldine, in Timaru today, with the winner walking away with the Mary Smith Trophy, played for between the top Mid and South Canterbury teams. Meanwhile, in the men’s competition, Wakanui are back in Ashburton against a Temuka side that’s only won one game so far this season. That game starts at 2.40pm.

College upset Donkeys Youth overcame experience as the Ashburton College boys beat Team Donkey in the latest round of Basketball Mid Canterbury’s men’s A grade competition on Wednesday night. The College side’s 79-76 win at the Oxford Street stadium was only their third of the competition, and just the Donkeys’ second loss, as the competition’s third round got under way. It was an exciting encounter, with College A matching up to the more experienced Team Donkey side and holding them well, but Team Donkey were good at exploiting mismatches and took a 21-19 lead into the second quarter. The all telling third quarter was a game changer, College coach Brian Kerr said.
College started off well, managing to hit from range and increasing their speed up the court which allowed them to drive more freely. Fotu Hala hit the first seven points for his side, but it was the diminutive Thomas Patterson who stole the show, netting 13 points in a two-minute spree. Team Donkey fought back, but College maintained their cool, taking a 63–55 lead into the fourth. With 13 seconds to go, Team Donkey called a time out and set up a play needing a three to draw, but College were up to the task and denied them a decent look at the basket to take it 79-76. The other game saw Star Farmers Corner come out on top over Nomads, 86-71.

The Cambridge trainer was on her way to the Northland track with stable runners Seventh Up and Go Nicholas, however, a blown tyre on the Auckland Harbour Bridge put paid to those plans. “I just had a blowout right on top of the har-

bour bridge,” Hale said. “I got off to the side safe and sound, but we were parked on the side of the road for two-and-a-half hours. “But as frustrating as it was, there are worse problems in the world.” All was not lost, with Hale electing to lineup Go Nicholas at Tauranga last Saturday, where he finished sixth over 1200m, and she said he will appreciate the better track conditions (Dead6) at Ruakaka today. “That track was too heavy for him, but he
still tried a bit in the straight, so we thought we would just get him back onto a better surface at Ruakaka and see how we go.” While the seven-year-old gelding will have a week between runs when he contests the Northpine Waipu Cup today, stablemate Seventh Up will be heading into the race in a fresh state. The son of Shinko King hasn’t raced since his unplaced run in the Livamol last October, but he pleased Hale with his 935m trial win last month.

NZ up against the best By Niall Anderson Their top order has just been ravaged by left-arm seamers, and now the Black Caps have to prepare to face the best in the world. Mitchell Starc looms menacingly as the Black Caps prepare to face Australia at Lord’s, with the left-armed tearaway not only being the greatest current exponent of left-arm quick bowling, but arguably the greatest bowler – of any description – in Cricket World Cup history. If that sounds hyperbolic, well, so do Starc’s numbers. Of the eight bowlers to have taken 40 wickets in World Cups, Starc’s average is by far the lowest, at an absurd 13.9. He strikes every 19 balls – the best of anyone with more than 25 wickets – and so far is leading the 2019 tournament with 19 wickets at an average of 18.26, including ripping through the West Indies (5-46), Sri Lanka (4-55) and England (4-43). To be fair, it’s not just in World Cups where Starc leads the way, with the 29-year-old’s ODI bowling average of 21.1 the lowest of any player to have taken 160 wickets. Frankly, he’s the best bowler the Black Caps will have to face at the Cup, and Australia know what a powerful weapon they have at their disposal. “In this format, he’s unbelievable,” said Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis. “He’s got a few overs up front with the new ball when it’s swinging, and then through the middle and the death, he’s showing his class in a big tournament – I can’t speak highly enough of Starcy, hopefully he keeps this form going as well. I’m sure he will.” Starc has some fond memories playing against New Zealand, with his record noting 18 wickets at 19.1 in his eight meetings with the Black Caps. Those match-ups include a career-best 6-28 as he famously bowled Australia to the brink of victory in their group stage World Cup clash at Eden Park in 2015, only for Kane Williamson to hit a match-winning six to claim a one-wicket win.
Australia have threats across the park, but pace bowler Mitchell Starc is the spearhead. Starc then produced an even more famous moment in the final, bowling Brendon McCullum in the opening over on his way to figures of 2-20. Starc swatted away questions about Australia holding a mental edge from that 2015 final, and is complimentary of how New Zealand have played in England thus far. “There’s similar sort of teams I guess [to 2015] – their team doesn’t have too many differences.
“[But] I don’t think they’re a sort of team who carry too much [mental scarring]. “They’ve got a strong side batting and bowling, Kane Williamson is their linchpin in the middle there and they’ve got bowlers who swing the ball. “They’ve gone under the radar, they’re building nicely – we know how good a side they are, especially in tournament play. “To have them at Lord’s will be a big matchup for us.
“We always speak about building up towards our best cricket at the back end – hopefully we’re getting there, we keep improving every game which is fantastic.” The Black Caps can’t quite make the same claim after their top order were reduced to 46-4 by Pakistan’s left-arm seamers Mohammad Amir and Shaheen Afridi in their six-wicket defeat on Thursday. Jason Behrendorff, who claimed 5-44 against England, and left Black Caps coach Gary Stead expecting a left-armed attack at Lord’s. “We probably expect – after Behrendorff’s success at Lord’s – that he’s likely to play again,” said Stead. “We certainly won’t take that for granted but we’ll plan to have two left-armers play against us. It’s good we’ve had that exposure to left-armers in the last game.”

a superior run rate. That’s what the hosts have almost been reduced to, hoping for a washout. India next becomes sudden death, with New Zealand to finish. Tough run, that. Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka are all, now, chances for the semis too. Pakistan, with matches against Bangladesh and Afghanistan to come, will believe they can get there – 1992, anyone? Finally this format delivers the compelling element it promised.
Ish Sodhi for Lord’s?
The Black Caps missed a trick not letting Sodhi grip and rip at Edgbaston. He would have been a weapon here. If the Black Caps go back for a semi-final, the two versus three version, it would be a shock not to see Sodhi feature given the nature of this wicket. As it was the Black Caps bowled 18 overs of spin, Mitchell Santner and Kane Williamson combining. Santner enjoyed real turn to the point of employing a short leg and two close slips. Williamson took
one with his fifth ball, as he so often does.
Jimmy Neesham
Notched his highest ODI score, 97 not out, in a composed, calculated innings. Possibly left the hitting a tad late but wary of exposing the New Zealand tail to quality, quick pace bowling. Brilliant knock all things considered, having arrived at 83-5 and then holding it together after a rare Kane Williamson departure.

What did we learn?
Well, not a lot. Quick exits again. Martin Guptill first this time, Colin Munro 19 runs later. The Black Caps’ wedded-to-faith selection policy is increasingly hard to fathom in Munro’s case. Henry Nicholls is the alternative, or promoting the out of sorts Tom Latham with Nicholls in the middle. Something has to give soon. The other option is putting Kane Williamson in to open. He’s pretty much doing it now anyway.

This person will have responsibility for running the Centre, with the assistance of our support worker, on a daily basis and will successfully immerse themselves in the vibrant youth culture of the Ashburton District. He or she will need intuition, empathy and an ability to relate to all young people, as well as to our very important volunteers, stakeholders and sponsors. We are looking for the right person to move the Centre forward and continue promoting its valuable place in the community.
