Mid Canterbury resthome residents who do not qualify for subsidised care will wear the cost of increased wages for their caregivers.

As of July 1, care and support workers see their pay rate rise to between $19 to $23.50 per hour depending on qualifications and experience, climbing to a top rate of $27 over the next five years.

To help cover the $2 billion cost, the Ministry of Health has increased weekly

resthome fees by $74 more than what the increase would have been otherwise.

Every year on July 1 the ministry sets the fee and generally there is a 1 to 2 per cent rise due to cost pressures. This year the rise is about 10 per cent and fees will be from $974 to $1063 per week depending on location.

There are about 315 resthome residents in Mid Canterbury and about 130 of these personally pay the maximum amount for their care, not qualifying for the Government’s asset-tested Residen-

Take holidays outside of term time – principal By susaN saNdys

Mount Hutt College principal John Schreurs is reminding parents not to take their family holidays in term time.

When recently calculating absences so far for this year, he was surprised to find 15 per cent of students had been away from school on holiday, averaging 6.5 days, with the most often being one day.

This compared to a national rate of 6 per cent for the whole year last year, and about 14 per cent last year at Mount Hutt College.

Schreurs thought the high rate at the college could be due to a number of factors. For families working on farms there could be less flexibility, and the school being high decile meant a higher proportion of families may have discretionary income to spend on holidays.

Additionally the school had a Filipino community and some would go home every three or so years and a few were doing that this year.

The figure had possibly been bumped up marginally with a small number who had been away on overseas fixtures included in the statistic.

The amount of students taking holidays was lower in the NCEAlevel years, and the students at that level had generally met NCEA standards prior to going on holiday.

Nevertheless, Schreurs thought the figure was a concern and wanted to remind parents of the importance of taking holidays outside of term time.

Green light for dry after-ball party

Principal John Schreurs In the school’s newsletter he said research had shown that once a student’s attendance fell below 80 per cent, student achievement noticeably suffered.

“So any absences that can be avoided should be avoided. I understand that for some families the only time that is suitable for a holiday is in term time. However, if a student is away for these reasons their absence will be noted as explained and unjustified,” he said.

Ministry of Education deputy secretary of sector enablement and support Katrina Casey said holidays in term time were previously categorised as justified absences, as schools deemed them to be satisfactorily explained when they received notification of the holiday from caregivers.

“They are now categorised as unjustified absences and a parent’s note does not provide justification,” Casey said.

Changing the categorisation of holidays in term time had not had an influence on overall regular attendance nationwide, with the 2016 rate of 67.2 per cent falling in the same range as the previous five years, which ranged from 66.3 per cent to 69.5 per cent.

The future of the party has hung in the balance since Monday, when police called time on the 18-yearold tradition which enabled senior students to take a limited amount of alcohol to the after-ball function.

The party itself could go ahead, but it will be a dry affair, due to new legislation around BYO events where tickets are sold.

Those who had purchased tickets were given the option of opting out and getting a refund or indicating their intention to go to the party.

Yesterday organisers were able to confirm sufficient interest to continue with the planned party and no-one is more delighted by the students’ decision to stick with the official party than college deputy principal Helen Shore-Taylor.

“Eighty per cent of the kids who were going are still going. I’m proud of the way they handled the disappointment. The students were required to let us know today and they’re still responding and saying they’re going,” she said.

The ball party is run by a parents’ committee rather than the college, and Shore-Taylor said it was traditionally a great event.

“It’s worked really well for the past five or six years as a safe and controlled event.”

The ball will be attended by 410 students and partners who will walk the red carpet into the Ashburton Trust Event Centre before being announced to staff and board members.

The arrival has become such a signature event, that tiered seating will be placed outside the centre doors for spectators. Wills Street will be closed to through traffic during the arrival ceremony.

Since its inception, the Ashburton Alcohol and Drug Service and an army of parent volunteers have managed the after-ball functions at both Ashburton College and Mount Hutt College, with the intention of keeping young revellers safe.

The company operates the 80room Radius Millstream facility.

Residents had been supportive of the wage increases, as had the resthome company.

“Better paid staff means better resident care and this is our goal,” Cree said.

Rosebank manager Sue Prowse said she had similarly received no complaints and the pay equity deal was a positive development.

“It can only be good for people who are working really hard to provide an excellent service,” she said.

River flows concern Forest & Bird

Forest & Bird is concerned about flows in the Ashburton River and wants to know what progress has been made towards meeting a minimum flow target.

The river has been depleted by irrigation over the years but management plans are in place to raise the minimum flow to six cumecs by 2023 and 10 cumecs by 2033.

Ashburton Forest & Bird member Mary Ralston spoke to the Ashburton Water Zone committee yesterday, pointing out in an earlier letter that stockwater not used because stockwater races had been shut down presented an opportunity to raise the flow.

The natural flow of the river was about 30 cumecs so the target minimum flows were not particularly ambitious, she said.

Some stockwater not being used because of race closures is currently being used for the pilot managed aquifer recharge project at Lagmhor and Forest & Bird wants the water in the Ashburton River after the project’s

five-year trial period is over.

Environment Canterbury plans to evaluate the flow regime to be better informed about the impact of the 52 surface water and 96 groundwater consents that are connected to the river.

Commissioner David Caygill said it didn’t seem fair that all the surface consents were subject to minimum flow conditions while 90 of the 96 groundwater consents did not have such conditions.

But those were the rules and the consent conditions could only be changed when the consents expired or were reviewed, he said.

ECan water scientist Patrick Durney said less than average rainfall across the catchment since 2013 was having an impact on deep wells across the catchment. Some wells in the 80-90m range had run out completely and consent holders had had to go deeper for reliability.

He said the managed aquifer recharge project was trying to reverse some of those impacts.

A consistently wet winter would also help.

Prisoner escaped attending funeral Waitemata Police are hunting a prisoner who escaped Corrections custody while attending a funeral last week.

Lusitino Selesele was on compassionate temporary escort from Spring Hill Corrections Facility when he escaped, Detection Senior Sergeant Roger Small said.

Lusitino is 41-years-old, Pacific Island, 182cm and of large build.

Police believe Lusitino is with his partner, Jacinta Sale, who has two warrants for her arrest for driving while disqualified.

She is described as a female, Pa-

cific Islander, around 178 cm and of medium build.

Both Selesele and Sale are believed to be using a white Holden Combo van, registration CYN814 and it is believed they are in the Waitakere area.

“Where possible police will use other operational means and intelligence to find someone before putting their name out in the media,” a spokesperson said.

“Police now deem it appropriate to make his name public as we have been unable to locate him.”

Mid Canterbury’s oldest sheep?

June was born in June 1997. This month she turned 20.

We think that makes her Mid Canterbury’s oldest sheep – possibly New Zealand’s – and a very privileged one at that!

Living on Janette and Alan Andrews’ Beach Road lifestyle block, June has her own motel, with a comfy bed of straw to sleep on and a warm coat (a reconfigured from a calf cover) to keep her dry,.

She enjoys a smorgasbord of gastronomical goodness; lucerne hay, sheep nuts, muesli, chopped

green feed – and her favourite – dried bread crusts.

The Andrews were farming at Glenavy, but were overseas when June made her untimely arrival. While she was raised by her mother, the couple developed a soft spot for the merino corridalecross lamb and in time she joined the mob in the pet paddock.

June delivered twins every year until about 2013.

Like many elderly people, these days her eye sight is failing and her joints stiffening, but she still

perks up when dinner arrives.

The world’s oldest sheep record is understood to have been a crossbred ewe who lived in Wales.

She gave birth to her last lamb in 1988 and died in January 1989, aged 28 years and 51 weeks.

In 2012, a sheep thought to be a month off her 26 birthday died after falling off a 45 metre cliff.

The oldest Australian sheep was named Lucky and died in 2009, aged 23.

The challenge is out to find New Zealand’s oldest sheep.

Manawatu Gorge in tenth week of closure As the Manawatu Gorge enters its tenth week of closure with no reopening date in sight, the route suffered two more slips at the weekend.

New Zealand Transport Agency highway manager Ross I’Anson yesterday confirmed further repair work was being carried out after two small slips at the week-

end around the Kerry’s Wall slip damaged the rock fall netting and support structures that had been put in place.

There was still no opening date for the Manawatu Gorge as geotechnical assessments were still being carried out, I’Anson said.

I’Anson said this case would consider all options to bypass or

replace the current Manawatu Gorge route.

Once a preferred option was developed, detailed investigations and cost estimates would be undertaken to inform a request to fund the project from the National Land Transport Programme (NLTP).

Silent auction deemed a success A silent art auction for the work of late Methven artist Veira Beattie was a success on Tuesday night.

About 60 of the 75 works sold in the auction at the Methven Heritage Centre.

Eight-year-old Tilly Johnson was among bidders, and remembers visiting the artist with her grandmother before Beattie passed away at the age of 99 last year.

She loved looking at all the paintings and sketches, and made bids on three items.

“Because they are really cool, and they are creative,” she said.

The auction was organised by Methven Historical Society on behalf of trustees for Beattie’s estate.

Spokesperson Vivienne Lamb said it was great to see such a good response to the auction, which had attracted about 20 people, mostly from Mid Canterbury. “(Buyers liked) that she was so talented for a woman of her time really,” she said.

Female artists had been under represented in the era when many of the works were created, in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Ashburton’s economy may no longer be running red hot, but the district is on a sure and steady growth path that is setting it up for a very positive future, says Infometrics senior economist Kelvin Davidson.

Davidson and fellow economist Benji Patterson were in Ashburton yesterday talking to Ashburton District Council staff and elected members about the district’s economic journey.

On the back of declining dairy pay outs the district’s economy had been up and down, but a recession had been avoided and it had not dropped into zero growth, Davidson said.

“Assessing where we are now, things are stabilising and we’re back on track for renewed growth. We’re not talking a falling economy, just slower growth” he said.

This year’s pay out would inject an extra $300 million into dairy farmers’ pockets, but that might take time to flow through into spending, as paying down debt would be a first priority.

On the back of the significant drop in the dairy payout, other sectors such as construction had slowed, but the level of consents for non-residential work was still good, Davidson said.

One of the best measures of the district’s economic strength was its very low unemployment rate, around two per cent, and that was a number economists considered to be full employment. While the loss of several hundred jobs at Silver Fern’s Fairton plant would have an impact, that job loss would be lessened by the seasonal nature of work and the number of people who were of retirement age, he said.

The Ashburton District had 19,100 jobs and Fairton’s job losses made up two per cent of those. On average 311 new jobs were created each year in the district.

Immigration would always be an important key for Ashburton employers and last year 121 new migrants moved into the workforce, Davidson said.

And looking ahead, a key for Ashburton would be to secure one or more larger businesses with many employees. Currently the district lags behind the national average in business size – 3.5 employees, compared to 4.5”.

“Something like this would underpin your economy.”

With a higher than average number of over 65s in the district, larger numbers of older, highly skilled people were exiting the workforce and that meant employers needed to be aware of the need to attract more, young people into the district, Davidson said.

And a key to doing that would be playing the district’s trump card, its affordable housing, measured by the ratio of house prices to salaries, Davidson said.

“The foreseeable future, however, is pretty good; there are reasons to be confident,” he said.

Ashburton Bridge Club breaks seven year drought with win The Ashburton Bridge Club ended a seven-year drought by winning the MidSouth Island Interclub Teams bridge event recently.

Club secretary Trish Downward said three teams – open, intermediate and junior – attended the tournament in Timaru last weekend winning 13 of the 15 matches played on the day.

The club has around 120 members who meet up to four times a week at their clubrooms on Alford Forest Road; the group has been around for more than 50 years.

Downward, who began playing bridge in her 20s, said club nights catered for all levels of play, from social or beginners to seriously competitive.

“We have at least three people in their 90s and it’s a social thing. A lot of people say it’s like a big family.”

Attack causes disruption A new and highly virulent outbreak of malicious datascrambling software appears to be causing mass disruption across the world, hitting companies and governments in Europe especially hard.

Officials in Ukraine reported serious intrusions of the country’s power grid as well as at banks and government offices, where one senior executive posted a photo of a darkened computer screen and the words, “the whole network is down”. The prime minister cautioned that the country’s “vital systems” hadn’t been affected.

Russia’s Rosneft oil company also reported falling victim to hacking and said it had narrowly avoided major damage, as did Danish shipping giant A.P. Moller-Maersk.

“We are talking about a cyberattack,” said Anders Rosendahl, a spokesman for the Copenhagen-based shipping group. “It has affected all branches of our business, at home and abroad.”

The attack was confirmed to have spread beyond Europe when US drugmaker Merck, based in New Jersey, said its systems had also been compromised.

A cyber attack has caused havoc across Europe and the United States. campaign was piling up fast, and the electronic rampage appeared to be rapidly snowballing into a worldwide crisis.

There’s very little information about what might be behind the disruption at each specific company, but cybersecurity experts rapidly zeroed in on a form of ransomware, the name given to programs that hold data hostage by scrambling it until a

payment is made. “A massive ransomware campaign is currently unfolding worldwide,” said Romanian cybersecurity company Bitdefender, where analyst Bogdan Botezatu said that it appeared to be nearly identical to GoldenEye, one of a family of hostage-taking programs that has been circulating for months. Some analysts were calling the new form of ransomware Petya.

It’s not clear whether or why the ransomware has suddenly become so much more potent, but Botezatu said that it was likely spreading automatically across a network, without the need for human interaction.

Such self-spreading software, often called “worms,” are particularly feared because they can replicate rapidly, like a contagious disease.

New law could jail poor anthem singers Filipino citizens could be fined or jailed for refusing to sing their national anthem with appropriate gusto under a new bill proposed by the country’s parliament.

The law, approved by the House of Representatives on Monday, requires that singing along when the anthem, the Lupang Hinirang, is played a public gatherings “shall be mandatory and must be done with fervour”, according to Daily Telegraph.

If signed off by the Senate,

violators could be punished with fines of $1372-$2744 or up to one year in prison. A second offence would include both a fine and prison time, and offenders may also be publicly “named and shamed” in a national newspaper.

“Any act which casts contempt, dishonour or ridicule upon the national anthem shall be penalised,” the bill says.

According to the Philippine Inquirer, all citizens must stand to attention facing the

Philippine flag, if displayed, or the band or conductor.

The bill also provides precise official music for the tune, which was composed by Julian Felipe and adopted as the anthem in 1938. A 2/4 beat is mandated when the music is played and 4/4 when it is sung.

The proposed “flag code” also obliges the national education authorities to “ensure that the national anthem... shall be committed to memory by all students” of public and private schools.

Although previous rules regulated the singing of the national anthem, participating with enthusiasm was not legally binding.

Other countries in Asia have also taken recent controversial steps to ensure that their anthem is sufficiently respected.

India’s supreme court last year ordered cinemas across the country to play the national anthem before film screenings to encourage citizens to “feel this is my country and this is my motherland”.

The Pentagon has said it detected “active preparations”

man Dmitry Peskov said that “such threats to Syria’s legitimate leaders are unacceptable.” Russia is Assad’s key backer and sided with him when he denied responsibility for a chemical weapons attack that killed dozens of people in Idlib province on April 4.

The US responded to that attack by hitting the airfield with dozens of cruise missiles.

Secretary Sean Spicer said the US had “identified potential preparations for another chemical weapons attack by the Assad regime that would likely result in the mass murder of civilians, including innocent children.”

An affront to all we hold decent Michelle Nelson

A

s New Zealanders revelled in the glory of bringing the Auld Mug home on Tuesday morning, one of the country’s worst criminals was preparing to marry his disgraced former lawyer.

Rapist and murderer Liam Reid and Davina Murray tied the knot in Auckland’s Paremoremo Prison – an act which appalled many of us.

Few will forget the television coverage of a wild-eyed, tattooed Reid standing calmly in the dock during his sentencing for the 2007 rape and murder of deaf Christchurch woman Emma Agnew. Nine days after he left her body on the banks of the Waimakariri River, Reid raped, robbed and attempted to murder a Dunedin student.

At the time Justice Chisolm called him an “evil and dangerous predator” – he got that right.

Reid is a despicable character and it beggars belief anyone would want to associate with him, let alone marry him.

However, Murray was prepared to let her career go down the gurgler for the man she claims to love, struck off after smuggling contraband into prison.

What is the fascination some women have with notorious criminals?

Murray is not alone – even Charles Manson has had his admirers during his long custodial sentence.

Psychology uses the term hybristophilia to describe the behaviour. Hybristophiliacs are in the vast majority women. They are attracted to men behind bars, usually delusional, unable to accept the criminal’s guilt or willing to justify the offending.

These women often appear ‘normal’ – they are teachers, nurses and, in Murray’s case, a lawyer who once held political aspirations. The reasons for hybristophilia vary.

The condition may well explain Murray’s behaviour, however, it doesn’t lessen the revulsion most of us feel about this week’s nuptials.

Even Corrections Minister Louise Upston waded in, describing the wedding between Reid and Murray as “disgraceful” and “revolting”.

To add insult to injury, it has also emerged Reid chose his daughter’s 22nd birthday to marry Murray.

And we can’t begin to imagine how the event would have re-traumatised Emma Agnew’s family 10 years down the line.

It was an affront to all we hold decent in our society.

Watsons arable farmer of year Ashburton arable farmer Eric Watson has been named inaugural Federated Farmers/Bayer Arable Farmer of the Year.

Watson, who received the award at last night’s Federated Farmers’ arable industry conference and annual meeting at Lincoln, is a Guinness world record-holder after his feat of producing the highest wheat yield of 16.791 tonnes per hectare – eclipsing the previous record of 16.519 tonnes.

Federation arable industry chairman Guy Wigley said Watson and his wife Maxine are widely regarded for their innovative thinking and knowledge of overseas technologies, which they utilise to improve on-farm productivity.

“This is a fitting reward; Eric has contributed to research in the arable industry since the inception of the Foundation for Arable Research. He has hosted trials and other research plots on his farm over the last 20 years, which has translated into productivity lifts for the entire arable sector.

“Eric is a quiet and unassuming leader. He lets his farm’s performance do the talking. This award recognises his current achievements and ongoing leadership in our industry,” Wigley said.

Mid Canterbury farmers who have done nothing about finding out if they need a resource consent to farm can expect a phone call soon from Environment Canterbury.

Farmers in the district with irrigation consents through schemes are already on top of the paperwork, but about 400 farmers outside the schemes are being chased up to provide farm environment plans and nutrient budgets.

Some will be delaying because of the cost of consultants needed to work out how much nitrogen their farming operation is leaching, the Ashburton water zone committee was told this week.

Packs with information about good management practices have already been sent to the 400 and a few have taken up offers by ECan to help them work out if consent was needed.

Controlling sustainable futures is the theme of this year’s Foundation for Arable Research conference, which begins at Lincoln today.

The conference, which runs over two days, is split into four sessions: Future farming, farm systems, agronomy and weeds, pests and diseases.

FAR chief executive Nick Pyke and chairman David Birkett will kick things off with an overview of the organisation and its activities in 2017.

University of Canterbury professor Paula Jameson will follow with an address about genetic technologies and the New Zealand cropping industry, before Maureen O’Callaghan of AgResearch takes a look at microbial products.

FAR director of research and extension Nick Poole will then examine the role of genetics in disease management, while grower Karen Williams will look at biosecurity from a farmer’s perspective and KMPG Timaru farm adviser Brent Love will explore the habits of good future farmers.

Why food is more expensive in NZ It’s no secret that food prices here in New Zealand are creeping up in cost, but have you ever wondered why they’re so costly compared to places overseas?

There are several factors as to why food prices are higher here than in Australia, says New Zealand Food & Grocery Council spokesman Brent Webling.

Australia is five times bigger than New Zealand, with a population of 25 million compared to New Zealand’s 4.5 million – they produce more.

To put it into perspective: “We’re less than the population of Sydney,” Webling said. “That means the economies of scale in Australia are vastly different to ours. They can produce more items for less because they have longer production runs.”

Economic growth in New Zealand’s growing markets in Asia and the East are partly to blame for rising costs, Webling said.

“We can also put some of the blame for our high prices on the economic growth in our growing markets in Asia and the East.

“As the standard of living rises

Fruit and vegetables prices have been pushed higher due to wet periods.

“As for the price of fruit and vegetables, they are high because a very wet autumn has restricted growth and destroyed some crops, leading to shortages.”

Google fighting a losing war with EU The unexpectedly large fine the European Commission has slapped on Google – 2.4 billion euros ($2.7 billion) – is evidence that the search giant’s relationship with European regulators is now a vicious circle of escalation.

Google’s reluctance to give up any revenue from its fastestgrowing ad format may lead to significant, unpredictable losses in its biggest market outside the US. The case in which Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager announced the fine yesterday is seven years old.

It began when the UK shopping comparison engine Foundem complained to the commission that Google was promoting its own rival service, then called Google Product Search and later renamed Google Shopping, to the detriment of competitors.

The case grew as other European and US companies jumped on the bandwagon. Google thought its troubles were over in 2014 when it almost agreed on a settlement with Vestager’s predecessor Joaquin Almunia – but the complainants were acutely unhappy with the proposed document.

They didn’t want to buy ads that Google promised to place at

the top of the search results page, insisting instead that Google display “organic” results.

One could argue whether such a thing as “organic” search is even possible with a proprietary algorithm, but that was moot – the complainants were on the warpath, so Google decided to fight it out. Vestager apparently responded to the challenge.

Google is nothing if not rational.

It would have agreed to a compromise had the stakes been lower. But so-called product listing ads – the kind displayed in the Google Shopping modules that appear to the right of search

results if your query looks like you’re trying to buy something – have been growing faster in recent years than Google’s traditional text ads.

In the first quarter of this year, they accounted for more than half of retail search ad clicks, and advertiser spending on them rose 32 per cent year-on-year. Making these ads less prominent or removing them from search results altogether would have resulted in a sharp revenue drop.

Vestager is aware of that, and the size of the fine reflects her intention to drive home to Google that noncompliance won’t be worth it.

■ Heat a dash of oil in a wok or large frying pan over a high heat. When the pan is very hot, add the beef and sear quickly to brown (do this in two batches to get a nice dark colour and avoid the meat stewing). Set the beef aside.

■ Reduce the heat to medium, add the sesame oil, chilli, garlic and ginger and stir-fry for a few minutes. Add the hoisin sauce, soy sauce and stock/cornflour mixture and simmer for a few

minutes until thickened. Turn the heat to high, add all the vegetables into the pan with the meat and its juices and stir-fry for another few minutes until the vegetables are bright green and just tender.

■ Serve immediately on brown rice with a sprinkle of peanuts, coriander and chillies.

Ashburton Combined Friendship Club Meetings second Tuesday of month, Seniors Centre 206 Cameron St, 9.30am. Phone Robin 308 8069 Tony has proposed we have a mid-winter lunch at the Bed Rock café in Allenton on Tuesday July 18. The details will be confirmed at the July meeting.

Our mini speaker was Jim Lawton who spoke about a trip he took to Alaska some years ago. The travel included short stops in Los Angeles and Seattle. A highlight of the Seattle was a visit to the Boeing factory where he saw planes being assembled. The visits to various places in Alaska was interesting and provided Jim with a lot of memories.

Our main speaker Don Church who reminisced about a visit he made 58 years ago to climb in the South American countries of Peru and Bolivia. He showed slides which showed life as it was in those countries more than half a century ago. The contrast between the life styles of the well off and the poor was dramatic and there did not seem to be a middle class.

On trips into the mountainous interior he saw amazing Inca ruins, hundreds of years old, some of which involved massive stone structures which would be difficult to build with today’s technology. People lived and worked at extremely high altitudes, some copper mines were at 17000 feet, nearly one and a half times the height of Mt Cook. This was too high for people to live continuously and those working there had to retreat each night to villages at lower altitudes.

Ashburton Friendship & Entertainment Club Our biennial visit to the South Canterbury Savage Club was held on Sunday June 25. With twenty members and friends on board McKeich Buslines coach, driven

by Craig, we departed from the Ashburton Savage Club at 12.00pm., arriving at the South Canterbury Savage Club Hall shortly after 1.00pm where a warm welcoming party awaited us. Following a social time and singing of the New Zealand National Anthem our entertainment commenced at 1.45pm.

Congratulations to Michael Lawson and Matt Markham who have been recently named in the South Island team! Michael will skip the Men’s Triples team, while Matt will play three in the Men’s Fours. They will tour the North Island in early August before the annual North V’s South Island test match which is being held in Rotorua on August 12.

The Harper Challenge Cup has changed hands a couple of times in recent weeks! Willowby the cup holders, defended the first challenger Allenton 4-3. Then the Wakanui club challenged and came away victorious defeating Willowby 4-3. Next in line was Baring Square who managed a convincing win over Wakanui by 5-2! Next challenger in line is Carew.

Interclub has now completed three rounds and Willowby 1 continues to lead in division one on 36pts, second is Rakaia on 23pts. In division two Carew leads on 29pts, moving into second on is MSA 3 on 23pts.

The latest Championship has been played, that being the Championship Triples. The winning team coming away with the spoils was Grant Wilson, Graeme and Neill Chapman! This gives Graeme his 20th centre title, which gives Graeme his fourth gold star! Neill gained his 1st association title! Second was the team of John Cuthbertson, Gaylene and Kevin Smith. Third was Winston Lee, Maureen Eaden and Helen Rennie.

Ashburton Woodworkers President, Merv Peck welcomed 21 members to the June meeting, with a special welcome to our demonstrator Michael Craddock. Members were impressed with the new band saw, thanks to the Lion Foundation for their generous grant.

In presenting his annual report President Peter outlined significant changes made in the Club’s operations during the year, including in-house protocols for appointment of officers, changes to the ChariDave Strong an assortment of toggles for scouts.

Michael Craddock then gave a talk how he got into carving from whittling wood cutting his fingers to more skilful use of decant steel chisels creating a wide arrange of wondrous items. Among the items he showed us were an arrangement of animals, ducks, skink, bear, cat, mouse all appeared so realistic. A figure of a scarecrow, a welsh love ring, several scout salutes and a Peel Forest scene. Michael explained that the beauty of carving is that if upon starting one and if it’s not working out to expectations you can put it away and make another attempt.

Coronation Target Shooting Club The Target Shooting New Zealand website this week announced the exciting news that our club (Coronation) along with the newly formed sister club Phoenix T.S.C. (so named to reflect the special relationship with Ashburton College) has been recognized as a new Association affiliated to T.S.N.Z. There are several advantages to be had from this development and is no doubt fair recognition of the progressive and positive attitudes demonstrated over many years by successive executives.

South Island Champs were competed at various locations throughout the South Island at the weekend.

Lanelle McArthur finished 2nd overall with 591.31 Sandy Bennett 10th 587.34. In the A grade Lanelle was 2nd 393.20, Sandy 4th 392.23 and in C grade Michaela Smith and daughter Emma finished 2nd and 4th respectively with 386.19 and 384.18.

It was a really busy week on the club scene with a number of good scores. Murray Cook and Savanna McArthur top scored, Michaela Smith continued her good form from the weekend but not to be outdone

by Mother and Sister Morgan Smith produced a personal best.

Mid Canterbury Lions Club At the recent Lions Clubs Zone Meeting held at Rakaia representatives from the seven Mid Canterbury Lions Clubs were present. CEO of the Maia Health Foundation, Michael Flatman updated members on progress on the Acute Services Building currently under construction at Christchurch Hospital. Maia Health Foundation, which was launched in May 2016 to raise funds for the Canterbury health system, is currently fundraising for the enhancement and provision of a new rooftop helipad at Christchurch Hospital.

Christchurch Hospital is New Zealand’s largest trauma centre and transfers to the hospital by helicopter, from emergencies and patient transfers, are increasing.

Last year approximately 800 missions were flown, an increase of about 40% over the last three years. This continued increase means a larger helipad is needed if it is to be fit for purpose.

Currently helicopters land in Hagley Park and patients are transferred to Christchurch Hospital via ambulance, a process that takes on average 13 minutes.

A rooftop helipad means patients will receive faster access to emergency care and a larger helipad will provide capacity to cope with future growth in helicopter transfer numbers. The helipad will also feature a rooftop clinical support unit beside it, enabling the delivery of lifesaving measures immediately after the helicopter touches down. The helipad enhancements will cost $2 million.

Michael spoke to the Zone meeting in September last year outlining the fund raising objectives. In addition to the helipad fundraising project, a second project involves the enhancement of the Hospital’s planned new Child Health facilities by adding contemporary facilities for children of all ages. The Foundation proposes to add indoor play areas, activity rooms, a school room, enhanced parent facilities, child appropriate theming and décor and entertainment systems. He advised that these enhancements will cost $3.2 million.

The information was taken back to the clubs and it is very pleasing to report that they supported the idea of the helipad and have given very generous donations.

Representatives from six of the clubs (Ashburton County, Ashburton Pakeke, Hinds, Mayfield, Methven and Rakaia Lions Clubs) presented Michael with cheques totalling $20,600.00. Methven Lions donated some of the proceeds from their Mt Hutt Open Day held in March; the other clubs donated fundraising money from their Charitable Trusts.

Plains Ladies Friendship Club The June Meeting was opened by Vera welcoming everyone on a cold and frosty morning. One birthday was celebrated and condolences sent to those who

had lost loved ones. There were 13 apologies and one resignation. Members were reminded that names were required for the Area bus trip to Christchurch probably in September. Costs were available and spouses, partners and friends were also included. Names also required for the birthday luncheon in August and those 90yrs plus were invited to sign a list at the back.

The film for July 5 at 10am is ‘Viceroy’ The mini speaker was Valmai Mitchell,- who unravelled a 9metre Zip bag - while she spoke to us about a trip to Ayr in Scotland that she and her husband made to visit her daughter and family. They had been invited to be there when their Granddaughter started school. They had several exciting adventures including a week’s holiday in the French area of Provence. When it was time to leave the whole family went to Amsterdam for the weekend and by coincidence they were at Anne Frank’s house 72yrs to the day {3rd Sept} that Anne Frank was captured. By the end of her talk she had also reassembled her zip bag.

The main speaker for the morning was Rodney Chambers who works for the Canterbury Parks team for the Christchurch City Council. The main focus of his talk was a about a trip to the World Ranger Congress held in Colorado in May 2016. It was attended by 350 Rangers from 63 countries. He was the lone representative from NZ. He was lucky enough to visit all the major Iconic National Parks. Yosemite, Bryce Canyon, Zion, Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon. He was impressed that you had to buy a pass to enter all the National Parks and that they all had Park Rangers to manage crowds , toilets ,rubbish and recycling. The park Rangers were also Law Enforcement Officers with varying degrees of control over all the visitors that enter the Parks.

RSA Women’s Section President Colleen Hands welcomed members on Thursday June 22, 2017. A minutes silence was observed for one deceased member. Apologies were accepted. The R.S.A. song was sung to the tape. No birthdays this month. Sympathy was extended to anyone who has sadly lost a loved one. Sick members were wished a speedy recovery. A reminder of the R.S.A. quiz night on Friday July 7 - $10 per person.

Colleen introduced the speaker Alison MacGregor, Manager of Volunteer Services for Hospice Mid Canterbury. Her talk was most informative. Hospice was established in 2014 – gets no Government funding.

There are a range of services available. A shop will open, mid-July in Ashburton. Alison was asked many questions. She was thanked for giving time to talk to us. Raffles were won by Colleen Wederell and Kelly Rose Blackburn.

Save the Children NZ – Ashburton Liz Quaid presented her second Annual Report to those present at the recent AGM. In it, she thanked all volunteers who have continued to support our cause following the closure of our shop, with their assistance at stalls, markets, catering and raffles. Also, the support of all those who donate goods for sale and travel to Methven to work on our behalf in the Craft Shop.

She also thanked her committee members for all their hard work, with special thanks to those who have resigned during the year or who were not seeking reelection.

Fundraising has again produced good results this year with funds from our Boulevard Day raffle being donated to the Haiti Appeal; catering proceeds to Nepal and our Christmas raffle proceeds to Mid Canterbury Children’s Day, Mid Canterbury Riding for Disabled and SCNZ project Child Friendly Spaces.

A very generous bequest from the Estate Joan Johnston was donated to our Bangladesh project. The proceeds from our Easter Raffle went towards our New Zealand projects and from funds held, we donated $500 to the Horn of Africa appeal.

We had a “Pop Up” shop on East Street during August which was very well received and also had our usual stall on Boulevard Day. We also attended the market in the domain organised by Altrusa to coincide with the sculpture symposium auction and the Christmas Market at Mayfield.

Thank you to all groups and organisations for allowing us to be included. Our thanks also to New World and Countdown for allowing us to sell raffle tickets on their premises We have held two successful Volunteer Afternoon Teas during the year, with guest speakers from the district and from National Office in Wellington.

Liz also thanked to those volunteers who support our Knit & Chat sessions and continue to make the many peggy square rugs shortly to be donated to Operation Cover-up and local organisations. We have also recently donated knitted items to the Neo Natal unit at Christchurch Hospital and Operation Cover-up.

Next month we look forward to the 70th anniversary of when Save the Children in New Zealand was started in New Zealand. A luncheon is to be held on Tuesday July 4.

College notch up two wins Ashburton College senior basketball teams produced a winning night at the Oxford Street stadium this week, the boys getting the better of Middleton Grange 82-71 while the girls easily accounted for Kaiapoi High School 72-34.

The boys were behind 35-31 at half-time but a big effort in the third quarter paid dividends and they went into the final period leading 59-10.

The visitors had no intention of giving up though and pushed Ashcoll hard until the end in what was an intense, evenlycontested affair.

Middleton Grange tried to

keep Ashcoll’s playmaker Fletcher Arnold under wraps, but that freed up his team-mates to stack up the points. Arnold made 16, as did Josh Lowe and Gareth Hunt, while Mitchel Prendergast finished on 11 and Nick Fechney top-scored with 17.

Coach Pip Johnston said it was a physical and even battle but his side refused to be rattled.

“As a team, they just keep impressing me every week. There’s always someone stepping up, so it was a good team win and should give them confidence.”

The win puts Ashcoll in fifth place in the secondary school Thompson Trophy competition,

with two games remaining before quarterfinals. The side travels to Christchurch next week to play Christchurch Boys’ High School and then hosts St Bede’s after the school holidays in August.

Week seven of the Whelan Trophy competition saw the Ashburton College senior girls take on competition newcomers Kaiapoi in the early game at Oxford Street.

College started strongly on defense, led by Year 13 guard Hannah Jerao, pressuring Kaiapoi’s wings into some early turnovers.

These were converted at the offensive end of the court, giving

Ashcoll a handy 34-18 lead at the half. College kept the pressure on in the second half of the match, holding New Zealand U17 player Helen Matthews to just six points for the game and finishing comfortably with a 72-34 final score line.

College’s outside shooters were in form throughout the game, with guard Sammy Arnold top scoring with 16 points, which included four of the teams eight three pointers.

College’s own New Zealand representatives, Sophie Adams and Ashlee Strawbridge worked well in the paint, knocking in 14 and 12 points respectively.

The Black Sticks Women have switched focus to the quarter finals after defeating Malaysia 1-0 in their final pool game at the World League Semi Final in Brussels.

New Zealand dominated all facets of the match from start to finish but were let down by their finishing on attack.

The Kiwis had an incredible 33 shots at goal and 11 penalty corners but were only able to convert once against the plucky Malaysian defence.

Striker Olivia Merry scored the lone goal after breaking away on a solo run and shooting from the top of the circle, following up on an initial save by the keeper to smash home on a second attempt.

Head coach Mark Hager said it was disappointing to come away with such a low conversion rate from their efforts.

“I thought we were pretty disappointing today. Malaysia put us under pressure but we created plenty of goal shots and corners, we just weren’t clinical enough,” he said.

“The pool round is over now and we’re looking ahead to the quarter finals which is all that counts.

“We need to get our basics right, we’re not quite switched on and hence we didn’t end up putting more in the back of the net today.”

With the Vantage Black Sticks currently second in Pool B, results later in the day will determine a sudden death quarter final against either Korea or Italy in the early hours of Friday morning (N ZT).

Hannam jetting off to India Robert Hannam is heading for warmer climes and a return to a racing environment he first plied his trade in nearly a quarter of a century ago.

The affable central districts jockey will fly to India next Tuesday to take up a three-month contract, starting on July 13.

Hannam enjoyed a successful first stint there 23 years ago and during his three-year stay he racked up more than 200 winners against world class opposition, including a legend of the turf.

“I rode against Lester Piggott,” he said. “Kieren Fallon, whose contract I took over, was there and Kevin Darley.”

Hannam won’t lack for opportunities this time around either with the backing of an old acquaintance.

“I’m going to be riding for Vittal Reddy, who was an assistant trainer when I was first there,” he said.

“He messaged me and was keen for me to come over so we worked out a deal – you don’t get too many offers at my age!”

The 50-year-old Group One-winning rider also has the possibility of extending his stay.

“Vittal has about 30 horses in work and his assistant has 20 so I will have the use of two stables and I’ll be riding on Thursday and Fridays at Hyderabad and Saturday and Sundays at Bangalore. They are beautiful big tracks.

“At the end of the three months we’ll assess whether or not I stay on for the winter season, another four and a half months when the stake money goes higher.”

Until then, Hannam said each race carried a purse of about $10,000 with a riding fee in the region of $100 and a jockey’s percentage at 7.5.

“I’ll be away from family for quite a while, so you have to weigh it all up and it’s worthwhile. My wife Kim will be coming out for three weeks and then again during the latter part of my stint.”

Hannam’s domestic 2016-17 season was highlighted in April when he posted his 1000th New Zealand riding success aboard Artaxerxes at Trentham.

His career tally features Group One victories with Greene Street (Avondale Cup, International Stakes), Iamishwara (Otaki WFA Classic), Distill (Levin Classic) and Aide Memoire (Captain Cook Stakes).

In brief New ARC chief Paul Wilcox is the Auckland Racing Club’s new chief executive officer.

He is currently a director of both New Zealand Bloodstock and Pencarrow Thoroughbreds, having held those positions since October, 2013. ARC chairman Paul Kenny said Wilcox will bring a wealth of business experience to his new role.

“He brings with him both strong commercial expertise and industry knowledge and is coming into the organisation at a time of exciting growth.”

No to Riccarton so far Grand Rio’s connections have yet to get serious about a trip south for the Gr.3 eStar Winter Cup at Riccarton.

“It’s in the back of our minds and he’s among the nominations, but it’s a lot to ask of a horse in his first preparation,” said Andrew Forsman, who trains in partnership with Murray Baker.

“He does handle wet tracks very well and if he continued to win then I guess we would then have to think about a crack at it.”

Salute at Rotorua The Graeme and Debbie Rogersontrained juvenile Malambo notched her first victory when successful in the Atkinson & Donaldson Plumbers 2YO (1230m) at Rotorua on Wednesday. The daughter of Duelled had finished second in three of her five raceday starts going into the contest and was duly sent out a $1.60 favourite and always looked the winner under a positive Ryan Elliot ride.

Sport Paddon cops flak for ad Kiwi rally driver Hayden Paddon has revealed he copped a barrage of social media abuse after a television ad featuring him aired during the rugby test between the All Blacks and British and Irish Lions on Saturday. Sky Television cut away from the game coverage at Eden Park upon the completion of the All Blacks’ Haka and played a Hyundai commercial featuring the WRC star. Fans were outraged at missing reaction to the traditional pre-game ritual and vented via social media.

Southern have kept their spot in Mid Canterbury Netball’s Premier Grade after downing challengers Rakaia 34-27 on Tuesday evening.

After finishing last in the latest round of pool play, Southern faced Rakaia who had finished top of the premier 2 grade.

Southern looked to have the upper-hand in the first quarter, with a quick tempo forcing

plenty of turnovers from Rakaia, allowing Southern to open up a 10-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Rakaia bit back in the second quarter however, applying some pressure of their own to close the gap slightly to 17-14 to Southern at the end of the first half.

The teams continued to trade blows in the third quarter, with neither side able to make any headway in altering the goal margin, with the third quarter

finishing at 25-22.

In the last quarter, Southern truly showed their premier pedigree, running away to 34-27 victory.

The result means Southern will start the third premier round tonight against Ashburton College, who won the previous round.

In the other matches in the premier division, Celtic will hope to take their good run of form from round two in to this

round as they face off against Hampstead.

United, who finished fourth in the last round, will play against Methven, who finished fifth.

Rakaia will hope to be fighting for the chance to move up a grade again, so will be flying out of the gates when they take on Hampstead B. In the other premier two games, Ashburton College B will be playing Celtic B, and Southern B will face Celtic C.

O’Driscoll backs Boyd’s ‘orange card’ call Hurricanes coach Chris Boyd was “horrified” at the thought of the match officials not sinbinning Lions lock Iain Henderson for his tip tackle on Jordie Barrett last night, saying it probably deserved more than a yellow card but perhaps less than a red, a unique take on the incident supported by Brian O’Driscoll.

The incident and numerical advantage galvanised the Hurricanes, who scored two tries and nearly stole the match after training 24-7 at halftime.

“I was a bit horrified when I was listening to the mic because at first they were talking about

nothing when clearly he was tipped well above the horizontal,” Boyd said.

“The starting point for that is yellow ... it was probably an orange in my mind – somewhere between a yellow and a red.”

When Boyd’s statement was tweeted by Irish journalist Murray Kinsella, who was present at the game, former Ireland international O’Driscoll responded by saying: “I think that’s a fair comment.”
