Ashburton retailers behind a freeparking campaign will meet with the Ashburton District Council to present their case along with signed petitions on July 7. They will propose one hour’s free parking along all streets in the central business district. They will also suggest use of smart parking technology which allows parking to be monitored accurately with sensors, decreasing the workload and cost of warden staff. The technology is used by Taupo and Rotorua district councils. East Street retailer Tony Todd said they would be pushing the Ashburton council
to adopt the new technology. In Taupo, the focus was not on revenue gathering but on parking turnover. Mr Todd said sensors monitored when a car had parked and wardens directed to the overstayers. He said Ashburton shoppers still struggled with the pay-and-display machines on East Street, despite council saying they were now working and being serviced more regularly. “Just last week a customer came in and complained the machine outside Depeche Mode was not accepting coins and had a queue of five people behind it. Four of them drove off.” Retailers say council’s unfriendly parking police is driving shoppers from the
central business district and they are working hard to keep it vibrant. They have been researching the parking policies of other towns. Hutt City Council trialled free parking in 2015 to rejuvenate its dwindling retail scene and due to the success has installed free parking as part of its 2016/17 district plan. The Free Parking for Ashburton cause has gained over 1100 likes on their Facebook page. The online arm of its petition is on its way to its next milestone of 500 signatures.
