Black ice caused mayhem on Mid Canterbury roads at the weekend. On Saturday at about 6am the Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade responded to a vehicle sliding off State Highway One at the end of a passing lane near the Synlait factory. Firefighters had to cut the 56-yearold Timaru woman, who sustained moderate to serious injuries, from the wreckage. She was airlifted to Christchurch Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. Station officer Fred Clarkson said the woman was the sole occupant and had been travelling north when the crash occurred. Her vehicle had spun around and slammed into a power pole, with the driver’s door taking most of the impact.

She had been “extremely lucky” to survive. Rakaia firefighters attended a second ice crash at about 7am, also on State Highway One, at Overdale. The female driver had been the sole occupant of the vehicle, which had slid on ice while travelling north, and hit trees. St John reported the patient was aged in her early 40s and was taken by ambulance to Christchurch Hospital with moderate injuries. Ice in the area had been “shocking”, Mr Clarkson said. “We couldn’t stand up ourselves,” he said. Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade members had their share of ice dramas, responding to a crash on McLennan’s Bush Road about 11.30am yesterday. St John reported five patients at the

scene, three males with minor or no injuries who were not transported to hospital, plus a woman and toddler. Westpac Rescue Helicopter personnel confirmed they transported the woman, aged 33, and her three-yearold daughter to Christchurch Hospital as a precautionary measure. The group were believed to be on their way to Mt Hutt for the day when their vehicle hit ice and rolled into a paddock. Mr Clarkson warned motorists to drive to the conditions. Icy access road conditions held up skiers on their way to Mt Hutt on Saturday, and the ski area closed later than usual to compensate. Media reported a two-kilometre long queue as people who had stopped to take photographs needed help from ski area road crew vehicles to get going again.
