Mid Canterbury’s booming school rolls reflect a strong and growing district, says Hampstead School principal Peter Melrose.

Thousands of the district’s primary

pupils returned to school yesterday after their summer break.

Among them were about 320 children at Hampstead School.

Principal Peter Melrose said by the end of 2019 that roll would have grown to about 410.

Getting tough on family violence

A change in the family violence act is long overdue and is a positive step forward in tackling New Zealand’s high rates of family violence.

That’s the thoughts of Safer Ashburton Families family violence co-ordinator Anna Arrowsmith following the release of a summary of feedback from the Ministry of Justice ahead of the introduction of the Family Violence Act 2018.

The new-look Act outlines how and when family violence agencies and social services practitioners can share information about victims or perpetrators of family violence.

The act will strengthen police safety orders to protect victims and stop people from committing family violence, introduce legal provisions to support family violence information sharing and allow non-government organisations (NGOs), with the approval of the secretary of justice, to apply for a protection order for a person who cannot apply themselves.

It also empowers the courts to direct people who commit family violence to attend a wider range of services, as well as empowering the courts to add any children of the victim to a protection order, even if they are not currently living with the victim.

And for Arrowsmith, it makes for good reading.

“This is a positive step forward for the government, who are taking our unacceptable rates of family violence in New Zealand in a serious manner,” Arrowsmith said.

“The family violence act 2018 reads well me to and is long overdue to replace the current domestic violence act 1995.”

Arrowsmith says she believes

the act will be able to help those who work in the family violence sector in an effective manner.

“Agencies often hold one piece of the puzzle and it would benefit families more when all these pieces can be put together,” she said.

“I think information sharing can often make people feel nervous, but it is never about breaking any kind of confidentiality, it is always about trying to help make someone feel safe, get the support they need and for everyone to work in a way that can both prevent and respond towards family violence in the best way possible.”

Under-Secretary to the Minister of Justice (Domestic and Sexual Violence Issues) Jan Logie said the overall feedback was positive recognising the importance of agencies having a more complete picture to better understand and address family violence, but a crucial consideration was seeking the views of victims and survivors, because they know their lives better than anyone else.

“Sharing this information can be critical to preventing and responding to family violence, but we have to do it the right way, making sure we keep victims and survivors safe and acknowledge they are part of the solution,” Logie said.

“Family violence significantly affects the lives of many New Zealanders. The level of engagement with the draft guidance reflects the importance of this issue in New Zealand and the need to ensure an integrated, responsive system.

“The Government is committed to reducing family violence, and this is progress towards that goal. I look forward to seeing the views of those who provided feedback reflected in the final version of the guidance.”

Baler, tractor consumed in fire

Firefighters from Ashburton and Mayfield battled a baler and tractor fire yesterday as heatwave conditions set in around the country.

A total of three fire engines and three tankers were called just before 3pm following reports of a baler that had caught alight near Westerfield.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokeswoman Lyn Crosson said firefighters arrived to discover a tractor and baler well ablaze, and approximately two hectares alight as a result of the baler fire.

The fire was contained before 5pm, but firefighters remained to dampen down areas.

A total of two tankers and two engines attended from Ashbur-

ton, and one tanker and one engine responded from Mayfield.

Crosson said yesterday had been quieter than they had expected with the high temperatures that were forecast.

“Touch wood there is nothing else, we are just holding our breaths, but at the moment there have been no other vegetation fires that we have had to worry about,” she said.

Like most schools in the district, the roll was booming.

“The schools in Mid Canterbury provide for the kids, they

work hard.” Among children enjoying being back yesterday were five-year-olds Taupiri Unahi, George Naughton and Ryleigh Hende, who started school last year.

The first things they mentioned they had liked about day one were swimming in the pool, playing on the monkey bars and

playing on the swing.

When pressed further however, they did say they had also liked reading and being in the classroom.

The trio and fellow returning five-year-olds were joined by about 12 new entrants having their first day at Hampstead yesterday.

“We had an end-of-the-year clearout sale of our secondhand cars. We promoted this in the Guardian with a full page ad. We were happy, when we asked potential customers how they heard about the sale, when they said the Guardian. The ad worked for us.”

Methven mooted as winch challenge destination

Methven could bring in hundreds of thousands of extra tourist dollars if it becomes a four-wheeldrive winch challenge destination.

And the Methven Lions Club is planning on hosting such an event later this year, thereby returning funding it has lost since cancelling Mountain Thunder.

The club has not held its signature motorcycle race since a rider was killed in 2017.

Club representative Matt McElwain appealed to Methven Community Board members at their first meeting of the year yesterday, seeking $2500 to go towards marketing and promotion of the challenge.

The first event was held last year, organised by 4x4 Events in Christchurch and marshalled by Alford Forest Fire Force members on an Alford Forest farm, attracting about 250 spectators.

McElwain said the event would continue to be organised by the winch challenge experts, while the Lions would be stepping in to promote and market it, manage spectators, and run the gate, similar to what they had done at Mountain Thunder.

The Methven Lions are hoping to host a winch challenge this year to raise funds.

The event was a South Island championships round and a national championships round, and would help build Methven’s reputation.

There was a second smaller “treasure hunt” winch challenge planned for April, and this could be held every second year in Mid Canterbury, and be worth an additional $40,000 to the community.

“These guys could be worth a lot of money to us if we help them out,” McElwain said.

Winch challenges involve fourwheel-drives ranging in value up to competition-built vehicles costing over $100,000.

Winches are affixed to pull them from a variety of situations, such as from gullies or after rolling on their side or somersaulting nose-first.

“You get a bunch of lunatics together in four-wheel-drive vehicles,” McElwain explained. “The wetter and muddier and more rougher the weather is the happier they are.”

Board members thanked McElwain and said they would get further information before discussing and making a decision.

■ HEATWAVE

Animal welfare a major concern Mid Canterbury’s big dairy cow population will be feeling the heat this week too.

AgResearch senior scientist Dr Karin Schutz said animal welfare was a major concern for farmers during the hot summer months and MetService was predicting many towns and cities are in for 30 degrees Celsius weather in the next few days.

Ashburton is predicted to hit 29 degrees on Thursday while Methven could see 31.

Dr Schutz said research showed

that when the air temperature reached 21 degrees and humidity was more than 75 per cent, cows’ behaviour and milk production could decline.

“Cows will change their behaviour to cope in the warm conditions, including drinking more, eating less, seeking out ‘micro-climates’ in the shade or close to water, and orienting themselves differently from the sun.

“If you want to keep up production, you need to keep your animals cool.”

This could mean providing shelter (such as trees), increasing access to drinking water, reducing walking distances, and preventing stress. If it is really hot, farmers could use sprinklers at their milking sheds to cool the cows as they wait to be milked, she said.

“Given a choice, however, we have found the cows will seek shade over the sprinklers, and from our research we know the cows can tell the difference between different degrees of shade and will choose shade that pro-

tects them more from solar radiation.”

The MetService says people need to stay hydrated and be sunsmart too in the scorching sun, and remember their pets.

Otago University lecturer Dr Alex Macmillan said some people would be especially vulnerable in the heat.

“Take care as the heat rises especially if you’re elderly, pregnant, or already have a medical condition. Babies and children are also more at risk with rising

heat, while healthy adults who work outdoors and those people who are in institutions like prisons, hospitals, and residential care are also especially vulnerable.”

Dr Macmillan said short duration heat waves could increase deaths and hospital admissions from heat stroke, heart and lung disease.

Kiwis were not used to temperatures in the mid-30s and some buildings were not designed for it, he said.

Mitchell prepares for first ever exhibition

Stuart Mitchell feels more at home cutting meat on a bench in the back of a butcher’s shop, than he does chatting to art aficionados.

But tonight he will have to get out of his comfort zone and be the centre of attention as his first ever exhibition opens.

No doubt the dozens who are planning on attending will want to not only view the butcher’s amazing upcycled steel creations, but talk to him about his work.

“It feels a bit surreal, I still struggle with the fact that people call me an artist,” Mitchell said.

The exhibition opens at Grace Gallery tonight at 6.30pm.

Second in charge at Netherby Meats, Mitchell was educated at Ashburton College and has been at the shop ever since, totalling 31 years.

About four years ago he decided to start doing something with the many old tools he liked to hoard. He had always enjoyed going to garage sales and swap meets, and came back with boxes of tools from an estate sale down the road from his Netherby home.

Mitchell’s work when the artist popped into the gallery. He told Holley he “played around” with metalwork, but Holley was blown away when he visited his shed and saw the large range of exquisitely-crafted pieces under construction.

“I thought there must be something I can do with it.”

So he got into his garage and made a couple of planters which looked like owls.

Supermarkets are just one of the many industries that are benefiting from a record investment from the government into low-emission vehicles.

Last week Energy and Resources Minister Megan Woods announced low emission transport will receive a record boost totalling more than $11 million.

The money is set to be split across 31 different projects, three of which have been proposed by Foodstuffs, who operate New Word, Pak’nSave and 4 Square supermarkets across New Zealand.

One contribution is $379,600 which will allow Foodstuffs South Island to add four 100 per cent electric trucks to its existing fleet on delivery routes primarily in Canterbury.

There will be two 6-tonne and two 11-tonne trucks using a standard Isuzu ‘glider’ cab and chassis fitted with batteries, motor and additional electrics.

Their main opposition, Countdown, received funding last year to assist with costs of converting five of their online delivery trucks to electric, one of which is scheduled to start operating in Christchurch soon, said general manager corporate

Police are warning people to be wary of a telephone scam in which the caller claims to work for NZ Police and Spark NZ. Ironically, the caller claims to be targeting internet fraud, said acting Senior Sergeant Beth Purcell. The victim is asked to purchase multiple iTunes cards at their own expense, and provide the numbers to the scam artist, who then redeems the gift cards and breaks contact with the victim, while maintaining remote access to the victim’s computer.

This is a variation on previous scams seen by police, and people should not engage and hang up immediately.

Former KiwiBuild boss Stephen Barclay says he is pursuing a case of constructive dismissal against the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development. This comes after the Ministry revealed earlier yesterday that Barclay resigned amid an employment investigation that revealed complaints from employees, contractors and stakeholders regarding his “leadership behaviour”.

Barclay said he was extremely disappointed that the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development had divulged details of an employment matter.

Working with nature reaps rewards Two Rakaia River high country farming couples have been jointly awarded the 2018 North Canterbury Fish & Game Working with Nature Award.

The awards are given each year to farmers who have made an effort to protect the environment.

Fish & Game says the efforts that Bruce and Lyn Nel from Middle Rock Station and Don and Julie Patterson from Manuka Point Station have made to preserve the natural environment and protect waterways has earnt them this year’s environmental recognition.

While it is unusual to give two awards, Fish & Game says the decision was easy because both farming couples had made such outstanding efforts to protect the environment, they were equally deserving of the top prize.

“Both farms are in the Rakaia River catchment some distance apart, but both share the same commitment to protecting the land and water around them,” said Fish and Game North Canterbury chairman Alan Strong.

The Nels farm more than 7000 sheep on their high country station but have also diversified into accommodation and high-end farm tours to make the farm more financially resilient, he says.

“Taking over the farm in 1973, the Nels have practised sound environmental activities even when there were financial incentives to do just the opposite,” Strong said.

Government subsidies in the 1970s and 1980s encouraged the clearing and draining of wetlands which the Nels very fortunately chose not to do.

“So their land has excellent ex-

amples of tussock grasslands, tall matagouri stands and wetlands in relatively unspoiled condition,” Strong said.

Their approach was to instead use the features of the land to enhance their farming operation.

“This included the ability to graze grasslands bordering wetlands during times of drought, making use of the greater water retention the wetlands afforded.”

They also chose to keep matagouri stands in their paddocks, as during the winter months these would break up the snow pack, allowing animals to access critical food supplies.

The vegetation offers important protection from the weather especially during lambing.

Strong said that in the intervening 46 years, the Nels have been careful caretakers of the

land and now have their daughter Charlotte working on the farm.

Further up the Rakaia River valley, the Patterson family at Manuka Point run a high-yielding, low environmental impact operation.

“The existence of healthy tussock drylands and wetland plant species on their property is testament to their desire to keep things as natural as possible.

“This is a very commendable aim, given the pressures on many high country farms to intensify their farming operations.”

The last time fertiliser or chemicals of any nature were applied to Manuka Point was back in 2004.

“The farm’s main source of income is from their game estates and hunting operations, that offer international guests the chance to hunt big game animals

and fish pristine waters,” Strong said.

The station also has an extensive livestock operation, with a flock of Arapawa sheep and herds of fallow and red deer.

“The work the Pattersons have undertaken to protect some of the Rakaia River’s salmon spawning streams must be highlighted, as protecting such important sites will be instrumental in the recovery of the salmon fishery.”

Strong said North Canterbury Fish and Game will continue the Working With Nature Awards in 2019 and is calling for suggestions about potential candidates.

“We want to hear about other farmers who might be flying under the radar doing great work to protect the environment so we can give them the recognition they deserve.”

Firefighters trawl mud Firefighters are carefully moving over treacherous mud, sometimes walking, sometimes crawling, in search of survivors or bodies left by a dam collapse that buried mine buildings and surrounding neighbourhoods with iron ore waste.

The confirmed death toll rose to 58, with up to 300 people still missing, authorities said. In an ominous sign, nobody was recovered alive yesterday, a stark difference from the first two days of the disaster, when helicopters were whisking people from the mud.

The slow speed of search efforts was due to the treacherous sea of reddish-brown mud that surged out when the mine

dam breached. It is up 8 metres deep in some places, and to avoid the danger of sinking and drowning searchers had to carefully walk around the edges or slowly crawl out onto the muck.

Even those efforts were suspended for about 10 hours yesterday because of fears that a second mine dam in the southeastern city of Brumadinho was at risk of failing. An estimated 24,000 people were told to get to higher ground, but by afternoon civil engineers said the second dam was no longer at risk.

Areas of water-soaked mud appeared to be drying out, which could help firefighters get to areas previously un-

reachable. Still, it was slow going for the search teams, and residents were on edge.

“Get out searching!” a woman yelled at firefighters near a refuge set up in the centre of Brumadinho. “They could be out there in the bush.”

Brazilian searchers got reinforcements, when more than 100 Israeli soldiers and other personnel arrived with plans to join recovery efforts.

Throughout the weekend, there was mounting anger at the giant Vale mining company, which operated the mine, and questions rose about an apparent lack of an alarm system.

Caroline Steifeld said she heard warning sirens yesterday,

but there was no alert when the dam collapsed on Friday.

“I only heard shouting, people saying to get out. I had to run with my family to get to higher ground, but there was no siren,” she said, adding that a cousin was still unaccounted for.

In an email, Vale told The Associated Press that the area has eight sirens, but “the speed in which the event happened made sounding an alarm impossible” when the dam burst.

People in Brumadinho desperately awaited word on their loved ones. Romeu Zema, the governor of Minas Gerais state, said that by now most recovery efforts would entail pulling out bodies.

Holt refutes leaving claims Breakfast show presenter Hayley Holt has refuted claims that she is leaving the show to start her own beauty company.

TVNZ is taking legal action against a scam website selling argan oil products that claims Holt is leaving the station in order to start her own company. Multiple viewers got in touch with the show to tell them they lost money after dealing with the argan oil website, leading the hosts to address the issue on the show yesterday.

Holt joked that starting her own beauty company is “actually a great idea” but she’s not leaving the TV show. “I am not leaving Breakfast and I am not starting a beauty product company... yet.”

Cars, heat a deadly combination T

he incredible stupidity and ineptitude of some people in this day and age is quite remarkable.

Just in case you’ve been living under a rock for the past week and haven’t ventured outside of an air-conditioned room, it’s hot.

Not just here, but across the entire country. In fact, they’re talking about record breaking temperatures with some parts of the world reaching near the 40 degree mark.

It’s not like this has just walked up and whacked us in the face either, they’ve been talking about the impending burn for a couple of weeks now so everyone should

be aware.

Yet, still there’s stories coming out that just baffle the mind.

Yesterday morning a news story broke in the North Island of a mother who left two young children in her car while she went shopping.

Yes, that’s right – it’s one of the

hottest periods of time on record and someone felt it was OK to leave two children in a vehicle, without windows down.

Seriously?

Surely there is something that ticks over in the brain as you lock the doors, leaving two children sitting in their car seats that stops you, and makes you think – hold on, this isn’t quite right.

In this case, it would appear not. And that’s pretty disappointing.

Luckily, a fellow shopper was alerted to the children through hearing them upset in the car and worked with the elder of the two children to open the doors

A parent has a duty to ensure the safety of their children at all times, no matter what the circumstances and sadly in this instance, that level of care has

Everyone should know that an enclosed vehicle will produce a heat that is far more intense than temperatures outside.

The situation earned the parent a warning from the police and a report to Oranga Tamariki – in some ways a light penalty for the potential severity of the incident.

he future of education for those who keep the country afloat has hit tumultuous times.

Just before Christmas it was announced that Taratahi and Telford, New Zealand’s only real tertiary level institutes for agriculture education, were going into voluntary liquidation due to not being able to deliver the education programmes at the rate funded from Government.

Yes, there are historical financial penalties still being paid back, and the number of students forecasted for 2018 dropped from an expected 900 EFTS (equivalent full-time students) to approximately 550.

Everyone in agriculture leadership is aware of this situation and the need for a collaborative solution.

This will include: industry groups, education providers and the Government.

Last week I was in talks with the Minister for Education Chris Hipkins.

The talks were of the future and what steps will be put in place to secure a path for tertiary training for agriculture.

I can’t be much more specific but can say we are all aware of where the failures are, that the only way to build back up is if everyone works as a team, and that a sustainable way of funding needs to be found and secured.

Agriculture provides one in six jobs in New Zealand, so a much better funding model is needed than what has been in place up until now.

Let me share some facts on tertiary education funding with you. Many polytechnics in New Zealand have moved away from agri courses because the funding levels don’t meet the costs of delivery.

The Government funds universities around $22,000 per EFT (and more for medicine, dentistry, etc). Polytechnics get around $12,000 per EFT even though these courses are more hands-on and require a higher teacher to student ratio.

My understanding is that for 2019, Taratahi’s funding was to be reduced to about $10,000 per EFTS at level three and above and $13,000 at level two. The industry requires graduates at level three and four for most of the employment opportunities.

At $10,000 a student this funding is below the cost of delivering the quality of education we require.

One is left wondering how many universities would survive if their funding per student was at this level.

Should we, as a country, be sending the signal that vocational training isn’t as valuable as traditional academic?

As Taratahi had fewer students in 2018 than anticipated, some have – in our view incorrectly – leapt to the conclusion this is solely of Taratahi’s making.

Ironically, the reason is due to there being such a shortage

of people to work on farms that rather than undertaking a training course on the hope of getting a job at the end, they are going straight to farm employment.

If we want to attract young urban students, more Maori/ Pasifika, then there is a need for residential courses providing a transition between school and the work place.

If our economy changes and unemployment rises, competing for talent will demand a strong tertiary agri presence.

A significant number of polytechnics have made losses over the past few years and the Government has bailed them out to the tune of tens of millions of dollars showing there is a systemic funding issue within the tertiary sector.

Minister Hipkins has informed me that he is committed to finding a solution for tertiary vocational education and it is my hope that a practical and affordable system is put in place to assist industries in attract-

ing and developing our future workforce.

He is well aware of the needs of the agriculture sector and he knows a solution is needed and fast.

After all, the primary industry is the backstop the country has when we are hit by economic disasters like the Global Financial Crisis.

Further Government investment is needed now so that in future New Zealand can survive any other financial hit it may be struck by.

We need Taratahi and Telford to not only be successful, but to ensure agriculture can thrive.

Synlait pruned 50c/kg off its latest milk price forecast.

Synlait prunes forecast by 50c Dunsandel milk company Synlait has lowered its milk price forecast for the 2018/19 season to $6.25 a kilogram of milksolids.

The NZX-listed company said the payout change had been expected for some time because of decreasing dairy commodity prices and was indicated as a possibility at its annual meeting in November.

Synlait’s previous forecast price of $6.75/ kg was announced last September.

Chief executive Leon Clement said commodity prices had, until lately, been declining for some time.

“This is in part due to global demand reacting to very strong production from New

Zealand carrying into summer, alongside expectations of better production growth out of the Northern Hemisphere.”

The company signalled the latest forecast price of $6.25/kg was dependent on commodity prices continuing to recover for the rest of the season. “Our milk suppliers will not be surprised by this change as we communicate openly with them about the fluctuations in global pricing on a regular basis,” Clement said. “We will continue to monitor the situation as we approach the end of the season in June.”

MARKET REPORT

By Guy Trafford Farm gate milk price projections for 2019 are starting to lift with Westpac now looking at $6.30, up from $6.10.

It wasn’t that long ago that Rabobank dropped their prediction, although it was to $6.25 so the gap between the two banks has closed considerably. One of the major drivers of global milk product prices is now the US which has become a major player.

Last year (2018) US dairy exports topped 1.1 million tonnes, up 20 per cent from the previous year and taking their share of global trade from 17 per cent up to 19 per cent; closing in on their stated aim of getting to 20 per cent.

A closer look at how US dairy fared shows some interesting trends. From 2013 to 2018 global dairy trade has gone from 5.5m tonnes to 6.7m tonnes.

The domestic price for milk in the US has been low, which incentivised exporters more and allowed them to be more competitive, especially when producers have had a little government help with returns.

At the same time (last season) New Zealand had a drop in production due to the adverse spring which left a gap in the market which the US was happy to fill.

The US dollar was lower at that point also which helped its competitiveness, especially with SMP. In the second half of 2018 the picture changed somewhat for the US with a strengthening US dollar and New Zealand’s production on the rise again applying supply pressure. This, plus the China v US trade impasse, has forced the US to look further afield for trade.

On the local front Westland’s financial analysis has thrown out a card not too many saw coming with rumours that Saputo, the Canadian dairy company and latterly purchasers of Murray Goulburn in Australia, are looking at buying into the financially strapped co-op.

Any change of ownership, whether it be a cornerstone investor or a total sale, would have to be voted on by the 429 farmer/ shareholders, and would require 75 per cent in favour.

Very little comment has come from Westland about this potential from any of the dairy producers about the challenge this may signal to the status quo of New Zealand milk production. Another bit of

interest coming from across the Tasman is that testing of pork coming into Australia has picked up signs of African swine fever. Another reason for New Zealand pork producers to wonder at MPI’s decision to allow unprocessed pork into New Zealand, including pork from China.

Markets The trends from the previous weeks have continued for this week, although the lamb schedule falls seem to have slowed – at least for now.

Sheep Only one processor dropped their lamb schedule this week which has dropped the average below where prices were this time last year. Perhaps more concerning is that last year even with the higher dollar (kiwi v US) prices were moving up. This year the trend is definitely downwards. Mutton remains unchanged, although saleyard prices rocketed at the recent Temuka fair.

The interesting point here is nationally ewe numbers are still falling and yet record prices are being paid. Top price was $320 for border romneys and prices going down to $230 for smaller lines. Perhaps, at least in the South Island, we may see sheep numbers on the improve for the near future.

Wool Finer grades of wool, mid-micron and the finer crossbred, improved considerably at last week’s sale. However, the trend did not extend to the coarser end with prices dropping.

Beef A small lift in the prime schedules, which is welcomed. The grass market which has been driving the saleyards appears to be coming to an end with prices flattening and on the downward trend although with the increased areas in irrigation now prices are not expected to fall dramatically.

Venison The plummeting prices which began back in October have continued relentlessly with a further 10c coming off processor schedules this week. We have to go back to October 2017 to find similar prices.

Dairy Not too much to report here with the dollar being the only major influence at the moment.

Record SI guest nights

Tourism hotspots Canterbury and Queenstown had the most growth among international travellers. million in January 2018. January guest nights have exceeded 4.8 million since 2016.

November guest nights rose to 3.54 million, 3.8 per cent higher

than a year earlier.

Domestic nights were 4.2 per cent higher at 1.8 million, while international nights rose 3.4 per cent to 1.73 million.

Stats NZ noted that both the monthly and annual figures were driven by increased South Island tourism.

Guest nights there in November were 9.7 per cent higher than a year earlier, while those in the North Island fell 2.8 per cent.

In the year through November, South Island guest night numbers rose 6.3 per cent, while those in the North Island fell 0.7 per cent.

Tourism hotspots Canterbury and Queenstown had the most growth among international travellers, with their November guest nights up 23 and 6.9 per cent respectively from the same month of 2017.

“Increased international guest nights in the South Island were consistent with international visitor arrivals, which were also up in Christchurch and Queenstown for November,” accommodation and construction statistics manager Melissa McKenzie said.

Restaurant fined Businesses and their owners will be significantly penalised for breaching minimum employment standards. That’s the message the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment is sending out.

A Napier restaurant owner has been ordered to pay $30,000 out of her own pocket after two of her migrant employees worked long hours, seven days a week, with no days off. The Employment Relations Authority determination comes after an investigation by the Labour Inspectorate found that owner Huichan Xu, a sole trader of Golden Spring Takeaway, breached 10 of its standards.

“You can’t have a conversation about more listings unless you look at the entire ecosystem,” he says.

Another attempt to generate early stage capital to fund new businesses was including crowd-funding rules in the Financial Markets Conduct Act passed in 2013.

Everett says legislators took quite a brave step creating the crowd-funding regime but it hasn’t taken off in any size.

An obvious question is whether merchant bankers and fund managers are less willing to take risks than they once were.

TIL Logistics, with a current market capitalisation of $119.2 million, listed in late 2017 via a backdoor listing because its owners were told there was no support for an IPO. TIL’s size and operations are reasonably comparable to those of Mainfreight, which raised $57 million by selling shares at 96 cents each in its 1996 float.

Mainfreight has since expanded globally and its market capitalisation is now $3.2 billion, or $32.01 per share. TIL had already demonstrated an appetite for growth before its listing.

So why was Mainfreight’s listing possible in 1996 but TIL’s wasn’t in 2017?

Certainly, the evidence of recent rights issues from Fletcher Building’s $750 million issue last year to Gentrack’s $90 million and Seeka’s $50 million issues appears to show that underwriters will only take “risks” when the outcome is a sure bet that could be achieved without underwriting.

Everett says he has sat on the merchant banking and funds management side of the fence and notes the New Zealand firms are small by international standards.

“It only takes one or two to go wrong” and potential New Zealand underwriters would be severely damaged, if not wiped out.

The resources required to support both early stage capital raising through to an NZX listing are matters the review needs to examine, he says.

Private equity poaching New Zealand needs to decide whether it’s acceptable for so many companies to be snapped up by overseas private equity firms long before those companies are developed enough to list on NZX, says Financial Markets Authority chief executive Rob Everett.

“If all the best investment opportunities are taken up by private equity, what’s available for listing, more often than not, will have had all the juice squeezed out of it,” Everett said.

NZX has tried a number of things to try to encourage smaller and earlier-stage companies to list by establishing a junior board.

But three iterations - the New Capital Market, Alternative Market and the short-lived NXT Market – tried since early 2000 have all failed to fire.

NZX finally threw in the towel last year when it decided to fold the two remaining junior boards, AX and NXT, into the main board.

“That, in many ways, is the crux of the issue,” Everett says.

“If you look at the New Zealand economy, most of the companies that are being bought by overseas private equity are a long way from being ready for listing,” he says.

It’s this situation, and the consequent dearth of new equity listings on NZX, that have inspired the current formal review sponsored by NZX and the FMA. It is designed to try and revive listings and called Capital Markets 2029.

Not only are new equity listings on NZX almost non-existent – there were two last year, neither of

New Zealand guest nights set a fourth straight annual record in November as both domestic and international tourism numbers continue to climb.

A record 40.31 million guest nights were spent in hotels, motels, holiday parks and backpackers in the year ended November 30, up 2.6 per cent on the same period a year earlier, according to Stats NZ. Domestic guest nights rose up to 22.7 million, 2.4 per cent more than a year earlier, while the 17.6 million international guest nights were 2.8 per cent higher.

Tourism has been a key factor underpinning the economy in recent years.

Data last week showed 3.85 million tourists came to New Zealand in the November year, 3.6 per cent more than a year earlier and a new record.

The 385,800 visitor arrivals in November were 7 per cent higher than a year earlier.

■ Preheat oven to 190°C conventional.

■ Beef: Heat a large frying pan over a medium heat. Place spinach in the pan and cook, stirring occasionally, for 1-2 minutes until the spinach has wilted. Drain well and roughly chop.

■ Add a dash of oil to the frying pan with the onion and cook over a low heat for about 5 minutes or until the onion is soft but not coloured. Increase the heat and add the beef mince, stirring to break up the mince and prevent the onion from burning.

Cook until the mince begins to brown, about 10 minutes. Stir in the spices and cook for 1 minute, then add the tomato paste and cook for a further minute. Stir in the beef stock, season and cook until the stock has been absorbed. Set aside. Once cool, stir

through the chopped spinach, toasted pine nuts and cheese.

■ To assemble: Cut each sheet of pastry into four squares.

Working with one pastry square at a time, brush the edges with beaten egg wash. Heap 3T of mince filling on to one side then fold pastry over so corners meet to form a parcel. Seal edges with a fork. Place on a lined baking tray. Brush the tops with beaten egg wash to glaze and cut a small slit in the top of each pie to vent steam. Place in the oven and cook for 20 minutes or until golden.

■ Serve with your choice of tomato sauce or chutney and a green salad.

The big twister of 1903

ovember last year was a wild month for weather, which culminated on Sunday, November 18, with a particularly bad storm across the district.

For those of us in town, all we experienced were some heavy winds and a quick hailstorm, which were unassuming enough.

We are no strangers to a bit of bad weather here in Ashburton, especially spontaneous bad weather (as happened last week), and so the December event seemed like a pretty normal storm. It wasn’t until the news came in that we heard what really happened: a tornado had passed through the paddocks just north of town!

Tornadoes are uncommon enough around New Zealand that we tend to forget that they can happen, yet common enough to be memorable to those who have experienced or seen them.

Like earthquakes, tornadoes are natural events we end up associating with places, as with the Christchurch and Kaikoura earthquakes.

As with every natural disaster or major weather event, videos spread quickly across networks and social media. We recently experienced what people may now refer to as the Ashburton or Mid Canterbury tornado of 2018, but few seem to know about arguably the worst tornado in Ashburton’s history, which hit the town in 1903.

An ill wind The afternoon of January 27, 1903, seemed like it was to be a quiet one – just another sleepy Ashburton Tuesday.

These expectations were soon turned on their head, with the coming of one of the most destructive weather events in our town’s history.

According to the Ashburton Guardian, the afternoon began with the onset of a great rumbling noise which seemed to approach town from the south-west.

Rubbish and debris began to fly through the air soon after, which quickly ramped up to a deafening volume overhead. Coming from the direction of Longbeach, the winds picked up until the source of said winds was revealed – a tornado, which then tracked a path right through town, allegedly carrying “everything before it”.

The produce shed of the Farmer’s Co-operative store was badly hit, as it was “right in the track of the tornado, and suffered considerably”.

The western side of the building was taken by the tornado entirely, its timbers scattered in all directions, before the bulk of the wall was eventually deposited in an adjoining lot. The building was left leaning on a 30-degree angle.

As the tornado ripped through the centre of town, it crossed over a Mr Thomas’ wool store and the edge of the Borough School grounds.

Miraculously, there were no reports of any serious injuries or deaths during the tornado.

Tornado trouble The Ashburton Guardian went on to describe certain events that occurred during the duration of the tornado, dubbed “exciting incidents”. These mainly comprised of near-misses. They drove home the point that one of the biggest dangers of tornadoes, aside from the whirlwind itself, is the debris that is picked up and tossed by the intense winds.

In 1903, as rubbish and debris continually scattered across Ashburton, a piece of iron struck one very unfortunate horse on the street, which was harnessed to a cart at the time.

The horse was badly injured with a wound to its shoulder and was sent to a Mr J. M. Cambridge for minor surgery. The horse was patched up expertly

by Cambridge, while the mare

was “standing perfectly quiet the whole time”, according to the newspaper.

One Robert Clark of Tancred Street had a narrow escape involving a piece of flying timber. A piece of wood came right through his roof and “stuck into the floor of his workshop, close to where he was working, but luckily Mr Clark escaped any personal injury, although he was naturally much alarmed at the time”.

Another case like this occurred involving a Mr Stonyer’s shed, which was speared by a large piece of timber from the Messrs Collins and Co. timber yards.

All four of Stonyer’s front windows were also broken, and the telephone wire outside his home was snapped – he just couldn’t get a break!

The Ashburton tornado of

1903 can be considered a one-off event, since no twister has caused such damage since that day 116 years ago.

While uncommon, tornadoes still occur around the country frequently enough that we can consider them a threat.

We should be thankful that tornadoes appear much less frequently here in New Zealand than they do in some areas of the United States, where people often lose their lives without adequate shelter in such disasters.

Just a few months after the Ashburton tornado, one such incident occurred in Nebraska.

Twenty-one people were killed, two towns were destroyed and $500,000 worth of damage was inflicted by their tornado, reminding us that Ashburtonians had been very lucky.

Alonso takes Daytona

Two-time Formula One champion Fernando Alonso (right) has won the rain-shortened 24 Hours of Daytona, overhauling Felipe Nasr two laps from the eventual finish yesterday.

The Spaniard became only the third Formula One champion to win the race, joining Phil Hill (1964) and Mario Andretti (1972).

“It’s amazing,” Alonso said. “Just an amazing experience with this team, from the test and now the race – a perfect execution of the race. Very different conditions and we’ve been competitive in everything – dry, wet, night and day. Really happy for the team and all the guys.”

Alonso, who retired from Formula One racing after the 2018 season, said

the victory would rank very high among all his accomplishments.

“To win this kind of endurance racing at iconic places like Daytona means a lot,” he said. “With zero experience and background in endurance before (last year) it’s quite a big thing.”

Already the winner of last year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 37-year-old Alonso will attempt to complete the Triple Crown of motorsports by capturing the Indy 500 in May. In a Cadillac DPI, Alonso took command of the race when Brazilian Nasr failed to navigate turn one and drove into deep water, losing a 1.5sec advantage. By the time Nasr had things under control, Alonso was 12 seconds ahead.

Pucovski the apprentice Will Pucovski’s eagerness to learn has impressed Australia’s coach Justin Langer but it appears almost certain the Victorian youngster will have to wait a while for a test debut.

Pucovski will remain in Australia’s extended squad for the Canberra Test against Sri Lanka, but it’s expected Langer will stick with the same XI unless the pitch pushes him in the direction of Marcus Stoinis. Pucovski missed out on debuting in Brisbane when Kurtis Patterson was brought in. “I love the way he plays,” Langer said.

“He’s got a huge upside, huge potential and hopefully when the timing comes he’ll be ready to grab that opportunity.”

Shaping up for showdown

Lauriston and Tech Stags grabbed vital points in Mid Canterbury cricket’s Muirhead Rosebowl on Saturday with comprehensive victories in their respective matches.

Coming off strong victories in their previous matches to start the New Year, both sides continued that form to ensure they set the early pace in the competition ahead of their clash this weekend which will determine who holds favouritism ranks for the remainder of the season.

Out at Lauriston, the hosts

opened the game with the bat in hand and would have been more than a little worried when their top four batsmen all failed to get up and going, falling for a combined total of 13 runs.

But the ever-calming presence of Bevan Richan turned things around for the home side, with his 59 runs along with a valuable contribution of 30 from Dan O’Brien seeing them through to 134 all out in the 38th over.

In reply, Coldstream made a steady start and were chipping along quite nicely but bowlers coming in after the openers spell turned the game around.

Scott Morgan, O’Brien and Richan tore through the Coldstream line up.

O’Brien finished with four for 29 off eight overs.

Richard Print made the most valuable of the contributions with the bat, scoring 35 runs in an innings which included three sixes and three fours.

Coldstream were eventually all out for 100, 34 runs short of their target.

A little further up the road Tech Stags made light work of Methven, winning by seven wickets.

The visitors lost the toss and Methven elected to yield the wil-

low but struggled to get things going with the bat and were eventually rolled for 104 on the artificial wicket.

Jack Meyrick was the official top scorer with 16 although the 22 runs sitting in the extras column took overall honours.

Harry Jones was the pick of the Tech bowlers taking four for 18 while Bevan Ravenscroft chipped in with 2-21.

In reply, Tech made reasonably easy work of the run chase, reaching the target with three men back in the sheds and Jones sitting as top scorer with 42 not out.

Summer of woe will toughen up the Aussies Justin Langer insists his players haven’t suffered any mental scarring from the summer despite admitting he himself lost sleep over fears of a loss to Sri Lanka at the Gabba.

Fresh from dropping a home series to a team from Asia for the first time earlier this summer against India, Langer had a number of other records to defend in Brisbane.

Australia hadn’t lost a test at the venue for two decades, while Sri Lanka has also never won a test match in the country in 14 attempts following the hosts’ innings-and-140-run victory on the weekend.

“I kept thinking before the game, imagine if we get beaten by Sri Lanka at the Gabba,” Langer said.

“That’s why I haven’t slept much the past week. Hopefully sleep a bit easier (now).”

But he insists the losses haven’t done damage to a group who have already endured one of the hardest 12 months in Australia’s rich cricketing history.

Canberra’s test is Australia’s last of the summer, and marks a crucial chance to end the home season on a high note ahead of both a World Cup and Ashes year for the hosts.

“Confidence. It’s not even a cliche. You’ve got to build confidence,” Langer said. “Winning is really important.”

Northerners take spoils

A pair of northern raiders have taken out the High Country Classic for 2019.

ley from Charteris Bay Golf Club on Banks Peninsula were able to hold off the rest of the 62-player field in the two day tournament.

Played at Terrace Downs on

Saturday and the Methven Golf Club on Sunday, the tournament delivered a great weekend said Methven’s golf director Barry Wackwitz.

“We had great weather on

both days, and both of the courses were in great condition,” he said.

Second place went to the pairing of Angela Mowbray and Robyn Maw.

Rose’s emotional Torrey Pines victory World No.1 Justin Rose looked into the camera on the 18th green at Torrey Pines and dedicated his emotional US PGA Tour victory to caddie Mark Fulcher, who is recovering from heart surgery.

Without his caddie of more than 11 years, Rose held off Adam Scott to claim a two-shot win from the Australian at Torrey Pines in California.

Rose said Fulcher, who underwent a heart valve replacement two weeks ago, was in his thoughts as he captured his 10th PGA Tour title – the most by any Englishman since 1945.

Fulcher and Rose teamed up to win the 2013 US Open, the 2016 Olympic gold medal and two World Golf Championships events amid rich form which has taken Rose to the top of world golf.

“Fooch, that was for you, mate,” Rose said.

“It’s been an emotional week; I’m sure watching all weekend was harder than the heart surgery.

“I love you, and we’ll see you soon.”

Rose closed with a three-under-par 69 to finish at 21-under, while Scott birdied the last four holes for a 68.

Rose’s score of 267 marked the lowest winning 72-hole total at the event since Torrey Pines’ South course was re-designed in 2001, eclipsing the 19-under Tiger Woods posted when he claimed the 2008 edition.

The score is remarkable given three of the four rounds are played on the South course, which last season ranked eighth-hardest on the PGA Tour.

Justin Rose Known for its thick rough and fast greens, Torrey Pines hosted the 2008 US Open which Woods won for his 14th major.

“I always pride myself on the golf courses I’ve been able to win on, and this one is another great

course with a lot of history,” Rose said.

Rose’s $US1.28 million victory took him past $US50 million in career earnings on the PGA Tour, in sixth place on the alltime list, while Scott also achieved that milestone and is seventh after collecting $US766,800.

In the past 14 months, Rose’s incredible purple patch includes six victories, 10 other top-five finishes and a total of 21 top-10s.

Meanwhile, Japanese star Hideki Matsuyama (67) and Talor Gooch (68) tied third at 16 under, while Australia’s defending champion Jason Day (67) shared fifth alongside Rory McIlroy (69) and 2017 champion Jon Rahm (72) at 14 under.

Woods, an eight-time winner at Torrey Pines, closed with a 67 to tie for 20th at 10 under.

Chelsea cruise to Cup win

Djokovic ‘insatiable’ Intent on keeping the next generation at bay, Novak Djokovic is promising no let-up after inflicting Rafael Nadal with the heaviest grand slam defeat of his illustrious career.

Djokovic’s brutal 6-3 6-2 6-3 Australian Open final triumph over Nadal earned the Serb an unprecedented seventh men’s singles crown in Melbourne and a 15th career major.

But the 31-year-old remains hungry as ever for more, after pulling past his idol Pete Sampras and to within five grand slam titles of Roger Federer on the all-time leaderboard.

“I want to get better,” said the insatiable world No.1.

“As Rafa and everybody else,

we need to because the new generation is coming up.

“If you want to stay out there you have to get better and you have to constantly improve.

“I like to compete obviously, as anybody else out there, and you know breaking records and making history of the sport that I truly love is the biggest honour and huge motivation.”

In what was an extraordinary performance on court against the 17-times major winner, Djokovic committed just nine unforced errors in his straightsets dispatch of the mighty Spaniard.

“Under the circumstances, maybe this can be the best quality tennis I have played against

Rafa in a grand slam final,” he said.

But, in a measure of the Serb’s relentless pursuit of perfection, Djokovic was not the least bit surprised with how easily he dealt with his greatest rival.

“Because it’s exactly what I intended to do,” Djokovic said.

“I wanted to step out in court and bring in the intensity because I knew that intensity is waiting for me from the other end.

“Rafa is kind of the guy every single match he brings that 100 per cent intensity and focus.

“He makes you play every shot from the very first point, brings a lot of energy in his shot.

“So I definitely needed a good

start, because we both were playing well coming into the match.”

Djokovic will head to Paris in May with the chance to dethrone 11-times champion Nadal and become the first man ever to win all four grand slam titles in a row twice in the 50-year professional era.

“First of all, I need to be very, very conscious of what this is, what this means,” he said cradling the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup that he’s now won more times than any other man.

“I will definitely do a lot of reflection and contemplating and being grateful for this moment, but at the same time I would like to keep going.”

Tottenham have exited their second competition in four days after a 2-0 defeat at Crystal Palace in the fourth round of the FA Cup while defending champions Chelsea were boosted by two video reviews in beating Sheffield Wednesday 3-0.

Palace took a ninth-minute lead when Jeff Schlupp’s shot was saved by Paulo Gazzaniga but the Spurs goalkeeper could only push the ball into the path of Connor Wickham and he scored off his thigh.

The hosts extended their advantage after Kyle Walker-Peters handled in the penalty area with Wickham lurking. Former Tottenham winger Andros Townsend slammed the resulting spot kick straight down the middle.

Spurs got a penalty of their own but Kieran Trippier fired wide to ensure the Eagles took a 2-0 lead into the break.

Chelsea beat Tottenham in a penalty shootout on Thursday in the English League Cup semi-finals after a 2-1 victory for the Blues at Stamford Bridge left the two sides level 2-2 on aggregate.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino tried to look on the bright side after the defeat to Palace.

Nadal staying positive despite worst grand slam final Rafael Nadal has never known a defeat like this.

There isn’t much the Spaniard hasn’t experienced in his career, and now he can add being a straight-sets loser in a grand slam final to an otherwise glittering CV. The 17-times slam winner was handed a humbling for the ages in Sunday night’s Australian Open final, losing in just two hours and four minutes.

His complete destruction was typified by one awful air-swing in the first set, surely another first on such a big stage.

Nadal shaped to rip a forehand

but instead clipped his knee to gift Djokovic a winner and present an iconic lowlight of the evening.

The final score was 6-3 6-2 6-3; the most one-sided Open final since 2003.

There was disbelief on Nadal’s face, evident each time he looked to his box, and disbelief in the Rod Laver Arena stands which leant heavily in his favour.

The loss was Nadal’s worst in 25 major finals – and his worst loss to Djokovic at a slam.

While Djokovic continued his error-free form that led to the final, Nadal’s radar was sharply off.

Groundstrokes that had arrowed towards the court’s corners on his road to the final flew wide and long.

His numbers with ball in hand also collapsed. The Spaniard was supposed to be the dominant server in this match-up but instead, Nadal found himself totally unable to make inroads into Djokovic’s service. Djokovic won his first four service games to love and was made to sweat on a break point just once.

Still, Nadal chose to be positive from the dais – reflecting on the injury run leading up to the tour-

nament, even if those woes weren’t evident in his run to the final.

“It has been a very emotional two weeks,” he said.

“I have been going through tough moments during the last year ... since the US Open, I was not able to play a professional match until the first round of the Australian Open.

“Even if tonight was not my night, for me it is so important to be where I am today.

“Coming back from injury I really believe I played great two weeks of tennis.

“That’s going to be a good inspi-

ration for myself for what’s coming.”

It is Nadal’s fourth-straight loss when he has reached the Australian Open final. Another defeat and he will match five-times final loser Andy Murray for one of the most unwanted records in tennis.

He pledged to end that run before the end of his career.

“This tournament has been tough in terms of injuries and in times in terms of opponents, like tonight,” he said. “I’m going to keep fighting, keep practising, to give myself better chances in the future.”

Locals buying up early A pair of local buyers raised the stakes early on day two of the National Yearling Sale at Karaka as they secured a trio of royally-bred youngsters.

Lot 121, a Savabeel filly from O’Reilly mare Kashmir brought plenty of attention during her time in the auction ring.

When the dust settled it was Cambridge trainer Roger James who produced the winning bid as he secured the daughter of classy racemare Vedodara for $400,000 from the Waikato Stud draft.

“I like a lot about the filly obviously,” James said.

“I have a long-standing client that wanted a Savabeel filly and I thought she was clearly the best of them. It is the sort of money we thought we would have to pay. I don’t say it’s good value, but

Underbidder on the filly were Graeme and Debbie Rogerson who put aside any disappointment they may have felt on missing her when they purchased Lot 122, an Iffraaj colt out of multiple Group One winner Katie Lee, for $420,000 from the Cambridge Stud draft.

son’s last throw of the dice.

“There was strong competition,” Debbie Rogerson said.

“We nearly walked away but something just said have one last go, so we’re glad we secured him.

“Hopefully we can get him to the Karaka Million.”

Team Rogerson upped the ante once again when they secured another Cambridge Stud youngster, Lot 147 a Snitzel filly from Group Two placed mare Lady Krovanh, for $500,000.

“I think she will be a runner,” Graeme Rogerson said.

“I paid a bit more than I thought, so I’ll have to do a bit of overtime. I valued her at $400,000 but if I hadn’t have bid $500,000 I wouldn’t have her.

“I can always fit a good horse in (though).”

Tommy’s first victory A trip home to New Zealand was made memorable for former Trackside presenter Cassie Fahey when her pacer Tombelina won at Motukarara on Sunday. The three-year-old sprinted along the passing lane to register her sire Highview Tommy’s first win as a stallion. That significant milestone was made even more special because Tombelina was bred by Hazel van Opzeeland, who raced Highview Tommy.

Prince switches on It has been a whirlwind few months for talented stayer Prince Jabeel.

The Brendan and Jo Lindsay-owned gelding has gone from winning his maiden at Taupo in September to winning the Gr.3 City of Auckland Cup at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day and placing in the Wellington Cup at Trentham earlier this month.

Lance Noble has been pleased with the Savabeel gelding’s improvement and believes Prince Jabeel’s win at Taupo flicked a switch in the five-year-old’s mind.

Te’o up for Six Nations heat Ben Te’o expects England’s blockbuster Six Nations clash with Ireland in Dublin on Saturday to reach boiling point, with much at stake.

The northern hemisphere’s most anticipated test of 2019 is being staged on the opening weekend of the championship when Joe Schmidt’s Grand Slam holders host the team they replaced as Europe’s dominant force.

Ireland are odds-on favourites to triumph at the Aviva Stadium, but ex-NRL star Te’o insists England refuse to be cast as willing victims.

“This game is pretty big for them. Playing England is pretty big for everyone, it seems,” said England centre Te’o.

“You realise everyone wants to knock us over, but we’re not just sitting ducks. I’m sure it will reach boiling point and will be intense, which is what everyone wants to see.

“We’ve had some good battles with them over the last few years and they’ve definitely been the form team in Europe.

“They’ve also proven to be the best team in the world at the moment, with their wins against the All Blacks.

“It feels a bit like knockout rugby – we get one shot at them, they get one shot at us too.

“That’s the way it is. We’ve been the two better teams in the last few years and we meet in the first game.

That’s just how it is.”

Te’o is likely to start at inside centre in Dublin, with the rugby league convert reporting he is fully fit after ankle and thigh injuries forced him to enter last year’s Six Nations and autumn series with minimal game time in the bank.

Guiding the powerful 32-year-old’s carrying game will be Owen Farrell, who is expected to recover from a thumb injury in time to lead a team positioned fourth in the global rankings.

Farrell will resume his rivalry with Jonathan Sexton and Te’o, who has played outside both five-eighths for Leinster, England and the British and Irish Lions, believes they are cut from the same cloth.

“Seeing Johnny on a daily basis for a season at Leinster, you understand why he’s the player that he is,” Te’o said.

“A lot of these very good players tick in the same way and Owen is pretty similar to him.

“They can both be quite confrontational, a bit aggressive.

“You’ve got one cranky guy on the other side and one cranky guy on our side.

One option available to Eddie Jones for the Dublin opener is to pair Te’o alongside Manu Tuilagi in a midfield partnership that was seen for six minutes in the second half of November’s rout of Australia.

“Manu’s a phenomenal athlete.

“He’s been back at his club playing week in, week out and he looks sharp out there now.

“It all depends on what balance the coaches want,” Te’o said.

LANE, Margaret Anne (nee Fleming) – Passed away peacefully at South Canterbury Hospice with her family at her side on January 26, 2019, after a long and courageous battle, aged 54 years. Dearly loved wife and best friend of Keith.

Treasured and adored mum of Paige, Greer and Sam. Much loved sister and sisterin-law of Richard and Lynley Fleming (New Plymouth), Paul and Diane Fleming (Te Awamutu).

Loved and respected sister-in-law of Peggy Ann Astwood (Waitara), Tommy and Linda Lane (New Plymouth), Jenny and Patrick Corbett (Timaru), Alistair Lane and Natasha Matias (Auckland), Dermot and Daveena Lane (New Plymouth). An adored aunt of many.

Guardian photographer Heather Mackenzie took the opportunity to gain a different view of the

heat by riding on the back of the mobile arm and capturing the moment the field of five were released for their 2300 metre heat.

The eventual winner was Baker Creek (black colours) who emerged to win impressively.

Close to 50 horses were engaged

at the workout meeting with a number of local horses running in the 10 heats during the morning.

Not one heat went to a local runner though, with horses trained north of the Rakaia River winning every heat on the day.

Dowell picked up three winners with Shotgun Wedding, With The Band and Baker Creek, the latter pair of whom were driven by local driver, Leo O’Reilly.

It’s a busy few weeks ahead in harness racing circles around the Ashburton District and a little fur-

ther afield. Geraldine race at Orari this Saturday before Methven plays host to the Hororata Trotting Club on February 10, then the Ashburton Trotting Club has one of their big days of the year late in February – the club’s first meeting for 2019.
