Traffic offences skyrocket

Mid Canterbury traffic offences have skyrocketed over the past five years, according to figures released by police.

Increases have also been re-

corded across Canterbury in speeding, warrant of fitness, cellphone and general driving offences.

However, the number of people drink driving in the region has dropped significantly.

Police figures show the number of recorded traffic offences increased by a whopping 137 per cent in Rakaia, from 284 in the financial year ending in 2010, to 673 in the last financial year.

Traffic offences more than

doubled in Methven over the same period, rising from 501 offences to 1028 in the last financial year.

Ashburton also saw a substantial increase, with traffic offences up by 49 per cent over the past

five years. More than 10,000 traffic offences were recorded in the town in the last financial year.

Spielberg addresses Holocaust survivors Hollywood veteran Steven Spielberg returned to the Polish city where he filmed Schindler’s List to give a moving speech to concentration camp survivors to mark Holocaust Memorial Day yesterday. The Jewish director travelled to Krakow ahead of the 2015 day of remembrance, which also marks the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz – the Nazi concentration camp in Poland which was the focus of Spielberg’s Oscar-winning 1993 film. Spielberg addressed an audience which included around 100 Holocaust survivors at the Holiday Inn Hotel in Krakow on the eve of Holocaust Memorial Day. In his speech, the moviemaker talked about the efforts of his Shoah Foundation to preserve the testimonies of survivors, while he also honoured those lost in the atrocities and called for future generations to remember the true horror of the Holocaust.

Winning author lets rip at Kiwi attitudes Eleanor Catton has slated New Zealand as a country led by “neo-liberal, profit-obsessed, very shallow, very moneyhungry politicians who do not care about culture”. The Luminaries author, who won the Man Booker Prize, has also taken a swipe at the “tall poppy syndrome” and Kiwis’ attitudes towards individual achievement. Her outburst has drawn a response from Prime Minister John Key, who said he was disappointed at Catton’s lack of respect for his Government and claimed the author was aligned with the Green Party. But the New Zealand Book Council has defended Catton’s right to express her political views and said it was hard being a writer in New Zealand. Catton was speaking at the Jaipur Literary Festival, and said she was not happy at being seen as an ambassador for her country. Catton said that after winning the Man Booker she became uncomfortable with the way people treated her in New Zealand. “We have this strange cultural phenomenon called ‘tall poppy syndrome’,” she said.

Calls by a Ngapuhi hapu leader to ban the burka at this year’s Waitangi Day celebrations has outraged Maori and Muslim. Te Matarahurahu hapu elder David Rankin said the traditional Muslim dress should be banned at next week’s 175th anniversary at Waitangi because it symbolises “Islam’s direct threat to our rangatiratanga (sovereignty) and our culture”. Mr Rankin said his comments were intended to spur debate about “droves” of Maori converting to Islam, a religion which he said “condemns cultures that do not comply with its rules”. A number of Maori see Muslims as the new coloniser, “coming to our country and refusing to accept the indigenous values of New Zealand,” he said. The Northland Muslim Community has spoken out against Mr Rankin’s comments.

“Contrary to David Rankin’s reported statement, Muslims are not seeking to oppress Maori,” spokeswoman Shirley Rankin (no relation) said.

“The opposite is true in that many Maori have chosen to become Muslim and are happy for our support in escaping the social woes of alcohol and drug-abuse which have become so unfortunately widespread among modern Maori.”

Swift is Madonna’s favourite The Queen of Pop says Taylor Swift is her favourite industry princess. Madonna, who is about to release her 13th album, told Nine Network’s Today’s Richard Wilkins “It’s good to have princesses” like Miley Cyrus, Rihanna and Katy Perry in the industry.

‘Reassuring noises’ from farmers

Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew says she’s hearing “reassuring noises” from farmers in Mid Canterbury, despite the region’s run of hot, dry weather.

Canterbury’s scorching summer has been problematic for farmers, with concerns growing over parched paddocks and

water shortages in irrigation schemes.

Primary Industries minister Nathan Guy visited the region recently to see the extent of the problem, but stopped short of declaring a drought.

Federated Farmers national president William Rolleston, who farms in South Canterbury, recently said the “big dry” had hit much earlier than usual, and

irrigation schemes were running short of water.

Ms Goodhew said for some Mid Canterbury farmers, the dry weather was “just what they wanted”.

However, she was concerned for those who had never experienced the current conditions before.

“For anyone who hasn’t been through a drought before, who

is new to the region, or has changed the nature of their farming enterprises, it could be quite tough,” she said.

Rural communities were “pretty good” at looking out for each other, but it was important that farmers reached out for help if they were struggling, Ms Goodhew said.

Funding boost for Community House

A $250,000 funding boost should mean Community House Mid Canterbury is the new owner of Ashburton’s former Work and Income (Winz) building within weeks.

The latest donation came from the Community Trust of Mid and South Canterbury and when combined with other hefty funding contributions – including $500,000 from the Ashburton District Council and $100,000 from the Mackenzie Charitable Foundation – the $1.1 million price tag was now well within reach.

Community House Mid Canterbury manager Kathryn Barr said all going well, all purchase funding should be in place by mid-February.

The building – the site of a tragic double murder in September – will then be transformed in to the new Community House, with tenants likely to move in later this year. Community House Mid Canterbury is a community-support hub housing more than 20 community support and social service agencies.

Plans have been drawn up, but for refurbishment to take place, further funding would be required. For that, Community House would be looking to Lotteries – to which they’d apply shortly, but wouldn’t find out about until June.

Community House Mid Canterbury manager Kathryn Barr is celebrating a $250,000 donation which has brought the purchase of Ashburton’s former Winz building a step closer.

“Our clients are buzzing with anticipation and can’t wait to get in,” Mrs Barr said.

“I’ve been madly filling out applications every day just about and it’s really good that those people have realised how important it is to help us, and it’s great because we will be able to provide shared facilities again.”

munity House moved into a temporary home behind Westpac.

Their old home was council owned, but this time around – thanks to the funding – the former Winz building would be 100 per cent owned by Community House Mid Canterbury.

Traffic offences skyrocket From P1 Canterbury figures show the number of speeding infringements issued by police rose by 39.9 per cent.

Canterbury highway patrol Senior Sergeant Phil Newton told media this week that speeding ticket increases were down to extra staffing in the region.

Ashburton police Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield told the Guardian last year that increasing both staffing numbers and the police presence in the district were two of his aims when he took on the role of officer in charge of the Ashburton station.

The lower speed tolerance over summer, which saw threshold of 104km/h in place throughout December and January, could also have contributed to the rise.

A surge in the number of infringements issued for using a cellphone while driving was also a concern, Mr Newton said. Traffic offences involving cellphones increased by over 300 per cent in the past five years.

However, Mr Newton told media he was encouraged by a drop in drink driving offences in the region, with recorded offences dropping by 21.8 per cent.

Ashburton police were unable to comment by deadline yesterday.

‘Don’t blame all neighbours’

“I’m perfectly happy with the building, I have no issues at all.

The parking issue is a non-event because every day of the week there are cars parked here,” Mrs Thomas said.

While parking had been part of the resource consent conditions, Mrs Thomas said the small group of objectors were being “pedantic” in trying to enforce it to the letter of the law.

“As a neighbour we’re happy to overlook that. As a neighbour I’ve been very happy with the whole building process. If I’ve had any concern I’ve called the council and had my questions answered.”

In the early stages, the neighbourhood group did some good work in ensuring questions were raised and answered, but they had now taken their objections too far, she said.

Isabel Porter has lived on Cameron Street for about 45 years and said the ongoing parking wrangle made her angry.

People in the area were accustomed to having cars parked outside their houses every working day and it would make absolutely no difference to their lives to have cars there for a few hours on the odd night, she said.

“This is a lot of trouble for nothing. If these people are interested in Ashburton they shouldn’t be moaning like they are.”

For her, the final straw came when the five neighbours complained about a rehearsal held in the art gallery ahead of a recent fundraising concert.

“It’s time they grew up,” Mrs Porter said.

Cameron and Wills street homeowners say they are being unfairly tagged as part of a dissident group fighting the Ashburton District Council over parking issues around the West Street art and heritage complex.

The fight to stop patrons parking outside five addresses on the two streets when evening events are held in the building should be put aside so the community could simply enjoy the new facility, the other neighbours say.

The five property owners have dug their toes in, refusing to allow cars to park outside their properties during evening events in the building, but for most, having cars parked outside their properties was not a problem, Anne Fleming said.

She has had no involvement with the small group of objectors.

Many neighbours felt they had become victims of community backlash against the hard line approach taken by the five neighbours who have threatened to take the Ashburton District Council to the High Court over the parking issue.

“We’re well used to having cars parked outside our houses. You come up here any day of the week and there are cars parked on all the streets around here. They’re not our parking spaces. What right do people have to demand that no one parks outside their house,” she said.

The neighbours simply wanted the complex open and for the community to move forward, Mrs Fleming said.

“Enough is enough, it’s impinging on the use of the building and they’re holding the council to ransom.”

Parking ban for centre opening Ashburton’s Art Gallery and Heritage Centre opens on February 14 and is an invitation only event.

It comes with a warning “to exercise consideration of neighbouring residential peace and quiet…” and with a map that makes it clear vehicles are not to be parked on either side of Cameron Street and on the south side of Wills Street between West and Park streets.

The parking wrangle with the council relates only to properties 124, 128 and 130 Wills Street and 121, 123 and

127 Cameron Street.

While there has been some public criticism of the decision to make the opening an invitation only event, mayor Angus McKay defended that decision saying lists were drawn up by the art, history and family history groups. “The public can still turn up and they can still file through the building.”

The 1pm opening time was chosen after considering a number of factors, one of which was a requirement in the resource consent for events outside the complex’s official

opening hours to be limited in number and for a detailed parking management plan to be prepared, Mr McKay said.

While the council was not obliged to prepare a parking plan for the opening, because it was within the centre’s opening hours, it had done so.

It has, however, gone one step further and instead of putting six spaces off limits it has elected to make all parking spaces on the south side of Wills Street, the north side and most of the south side of Cameron Street off limits.

About 260 fresh new faces made their way through the gates of Ashburton College for their first day of high school yesterday.

A range of activities were organised to help students transition into college life, including a shared barbecue, peer support activities, and a tour of the college grounds.

Ashburton College head of junior school Carolyn Clough said she was “incredibly impressed” by the group of students.

“It was an awesome day, it was just fantastic,” she said.

Mrs Clough said classes would begin for the Year 9 students today, with classes resuming for all year levels by Monday.

It has been the final resting place of Methven residents for generations, but its entranceway is a disgrace.

So says Methven Community Board member Dan McLaughlin of the town’s beloved cemetery. He and fellow members are frustrated after approaching the Ashburton District Council on multiple occasions in their efforts to have the frontage tidied up.

“It’s just disgusting really,” Mr McLaughlin told fellow members at the board’s meeting this week.

He said the board had been asking the council for five years to tidy up the area.

Trees downed in the 2013 September windstorm were still lying amongst the forested entranceway. Historic cast iron gates were covered in lichen, moss and cobwebs. Tall trees going back to the cemetery’s early days needed thinning, and there had been complaints about them shading Methven Chertsey Road in winter.

“It’s a nice looking entrance, it just needs tidying up,” Mr McLaughlin said.

He understood the council had refused to completely remove the downed trees.

Council parks and open spaces manager David Askin said yesterday staff were still in the process of tidying up the downed trees, and would clear what they were able to. Staff would not want to destroy rhododendrons in the area simply for the sake of removing the trees. He did not know if there were still trees from the 2013 storm remaining, but did know there were trees which had blown over last year in strong winds.

“As you know there’s still trees around that got blown over in the storm, which have not been cleared up, it’s not just at the Methven Cemetery, it’s around the district,” Mr Askin said.

And with regard to thinning the forested area, that was where expense came in, and this was a roading department issue.

However, he did not see the tall evergreens as a problem.

“They have been there for how many years, and they haven’t grown much in the last five years, if at all,” he said.

With regard to the cemetery gates, staff had sprayed these with Wet and Forget before Christmas, so moss and lichen should wash off over time.

“If they need painting, we will paint them,” he said.

A Canterbury-based jockey was rushed to hospital after falling from her mount in Ashburton last night.

Kylie Williams was knocked unconscious when she fell from her mount Snowdon shortly before the beginning of the final race in Ashburton at about 5pm yesterday, according to reports.

South Island chief steward Nigel McIntyre told the Guardian last night that Ms Williams fell from her mount as she was leaving the birdcage on her way to the Kylie Williams starting area.

“The horse galloped riderless around to the start area, and she was left on the track,” he said.

“The ambulance hadn’t left the birdcage area, so it was able to attend her immediately.”

It was reported last night that Ms Williams was conscious when she was stretchered into the ambulance with a neck brace on.

Mr McIntyre said the extent of Ms Williams’ injuries were unclear, as he was still waiting for confirmation of the injuries from a doctor.

Ms Williams had just won the previous race in Ashburton on Big Hoss who, like Snowdon, is trained by Tony and Lyn Prendergast. She also took out the second race on the programme with Melanie Claire.

State houses could be sold off

The Government has been looking at ways to reduce the number of state-owned houses in the wrong place or the wrong size, and has previously signalled a desire to bring in nongovernment community groups and iwi to expand the nation’s

available stock of social housing.

The Ashburton Trust has already signalled it has a cautious interest in becoming involved in social housing, but chief executive Giles Beal said no plans had yet been developed around the option. The Masterton Trust is heavily involved in providing social housing, setting a percent for licensing trusts as social housing providers when it bought 500 houses from the Government in 1999.

Yesterday Prime Minister John Key announced a review

of Housing New Zealand’s role as the country’s biggest social landlord, which owns 65,000 houses and leases another 3000.

The review will be completed in the first six months of the year and the Government will look to sell between 1000 and 2000 houses and may sell more properties over the next three years.

“The overwhelming dominance of Housing New Zealand leaves little room for nongovernment organisations to play a significant role but we can change that if we sell some existing Housing New Zealand

properties, with tenants remaining in them,” Mr Key said.

The houses could be sold below book value, as the transaction wouldn’t be on the open market, Mr Key said, but Housing NZ would continue to be the biggest provider of social housing, with at least 60,000 properties in 2017.

While the sales would free up capital which would be used for housing and other capital projects, the Government would be spending more each year on income-related rent subsidies.

Mr Key said the number of

income-related rent subsidies would be increased to 65,000 by 2017/18 from its current level of about 62,000, which Mr Key said will cost about $40 million.

The Government has also signalled there would be an increase in the number of tenancy reviews to almost 5000 over the coming two years to try and shift households able to move into private accommodation to do so.

About 3300 tenants in Housing NZ properties are currently earning too much to receive the income-related rent subsidy.

Woman Guitarist set to perform for home crowd seriously injured in car crash

A car crash south of Hinds yesterday morning seriously injured a woman, but a baby travelling in the same car was uninjured.

Emergency services were called to the scene on State Highway 1, about 4km south of Hinds, shortly after 5am and found the woman’s car had left the road and gone over the railway line to the left-hand-side.

It’s understood the woman’s car may have been shunted from behind by another car, causing her to lose control. It’s not known how or why the noseto-tail occurred as police were unable to comment on the crash when contacted by the Guardian yesterday.

A St John spokesperson said both the woman and the child were taken to Ashburton Hospital. The woman was suffering from serious injuries, while the child was uninjured.

Their car was substantially damaged in the crash, while the car which hit them was able to be driven away from the scene.

According to emergency services who attended the scene, the woman’s car left the road and crossed over the railway line before coming to rest.

The Guardian understands a train may have passed through barely 10 minutes before the crash.

Brett Hallam Holland hated learning piano as a child, so gave it up.

But when he was 15 he picked up the guitar, and it has barely been out of his hands since.

The 43-year-old has come a long way from his Ashburton College days when he played in a band called Southern Comfort with fellow students.

He has carved out a successful career as a modern fingerstyle guitarist and singer in America.

He plays in “a real amalgamation” of genres, encompassing jazz, blues, popular and even a little bit of country.

“I’m a little bit ADHD, doing just one thing I can get bored easily, to survive in New Zealand and Australia you have to do a lot of things, you can’t just do one thing and expect to survive,” Mr Hallam Holland said.

Visiting his home town this week with wife Kalar, he is preparing for a performance in the Ashburton Trust Event Centre foyer tomorrow night, kicking off a New Zealand and Australian tour. He will play some of his original work as well as arrangements of popular tunes, something for which he has become well known. Lorde’s Royals and Meghan Trainor’s All About That Bass will be among offerings.

He filled the event centre foyer while visiting a couple of years ago, and hopes he can do the same again.

Mr Hallam Holland first went to America in 2001, and was mentored by Australian fingerstyle guru Tommy Emmanuel, picking up the skill by osmosis as he ran the musician’s merchandising on his US tours.

Currently Mr Hallam Holland lives in Hawaii, but in the

long-term he thinks he and his wife may return to either New Zealand or Australia, which he said were “nicer countries”.

“You get opportunities over there in the US that you don’t necessarily get here,” he said.

In brief Tonne of cats seized Police in Hanoi have seized a truck carrying over a tonne of cats smuggled from China to sell to restaurants in northern Vietnam.

“After receiving a tip, we searched the truck and discovered the cats inside,” said Cao Van Loc, deputy chief of police in Dong Da District.

“The owner, also the driver, said he bought the cats at the border area of Quang Ninh province,” Loc said.

“All of cats were from China.”

Photos in An Ninh Thu Do newspaper showed the cats crammed into wooden crates, with some legs and tails poking out.

Cat meat is considered a delicacy, particularly in northern Vietnam, where it is called “little tiger” and is considered good luck. The meat is usually fried or barbecued and served at festive occasions or eaten as a snack with rice wine.

By Mary SiBierSki For what may be the last time, elderly Holocaust survivors returned to the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp 70 years after its liberation, to urge the world never to forget one of history’s worst atrocities.

Around 300 survivors, some wearing scarves in the blueand-white stripes of their death camp uniforms, joined world leaders for an emotional memorial at the epicentre of the Nazi genocide of Jews.

The commemoration at the cold and austere camp, which was blanketed in snow, comes amid concern over a resurgence in anti-Semitism in France, Germany and other parts of Europe.

“We do not want our past to be our children’s future,” said

survivor Roman Kent, 86, his voice breaking with emotion.

“Witnessing the atrocities committed at the entrance gate of Auschwitz was enough to keep me awake until the end of time,” Kent said.

“How can I ever forget the smell of burning flesh that permeated the air?”

The mournful wail of the “shofar” - a traditional Jewish ram’s horn symbolising freedom - rang out as participants prayed for the victims near the camp’s red-brick entrance and its railway lines to the gas chambers.

“We are in a place where civilisation collapsed,” Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski told those gathered as he paid respect to the Soviet Red Army troops who liberated the camps.

As night fell, dignitaries and

survivors walked along the rails in the shadows of the camp’s barbed-wire fence to lay wreaths and candles.

“I thought I’d be incinerated here, never to experience my first kiss, but somehow, a 14-year-old girl, I survived,” Halina Birenbaum, 86, told hundreds of dignitaries and fellow survivors, most of them in their 80s and 90s.

The grandson of Auschwitz commander Rudolf Hoess was among the attendees.

“I can’t forgive my father or my grandfather. I’m completely different,” said Rainer Hoess, who is devoted to fighting antiSemitism.

Celina Biniaz, now a smartlydressed 83-year-old, was only a child when, as one of 1200 Jews, she was placed on Oskar Schindler’s famous list and es-

caped the death camp to work in a nearby factory.

Part of Adolf Hitler’s genocide plan against European Jews, dubbed the “Final Solution”, Auschwitz-Birkenau operated in the occupied southern Polish town of Oswiecim between June 1940 and January 1945.

Of the more than 1.3 million people imprisoned there, about 1.1 million - mainly Jews - perished, either in the gas chambers or by starvation or disease.

Historians estimate that up to 150,000 ethnic Poles were also held at Auschwitz.

European Roma were also targeted for annihilation.

Around 23,000 were deported to Auschwitz.

Only 2000 survived, according to estimates.

Probe after fatal NATO jet crash in Spain Investigators are probing how a fighter jet crashed during elite NATO training exercises at an air force base in Spain, killing 11 military personnel and leaving others with serious burns.

Nine French and two Greek personnel died and about 20 people were injured after the two-seater F-16 crashed into parked aircraft at the Los Llanos base in southeastern Spain

this week. Speaking before about 70 French military personnel at the site of the accident, France’s Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said the tragedy “leaves a permanent mark on our collective memory”.

“The entire defence community is deeply wounded, as are all our fellow citizens.”

The jet - involved in an elite training programme - crashed after losing power as it took off, the Spanish defence ministry said, damaging two Italian planes and three French jets.

A source close to the French defence ministry said the F-16 “deviated quite prominently from its route, by 90 degrees, and hit French planes which were getting ready to take off ”.

“The planes were full of kerosene and there were many people around” which explains why there was a high number of fatalities, the source added.

The Indonesian military has called off efforts to recover the wreckage of an AirAsia plane that crashed into the Java Sea last month, after failing to find any more bodies inside the fuselage. Flight QZ8501 went down on December 28 in stormy weather with 162 people on board, during what was supposed to be a short trip from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore. Search and rescue teams have failed repeatedly in recent days to lift the main body of the Airbus A320-200, where officials had hoped to find the majority of the victims. The navy said yesterday it was withdrawing as the badly damaged fuselage was too difficult to lift and no more bodies had been located.

Carving a slice off park a good move Sue Newman

or any local authority, funding community projects means a juggling act between using its own cash and borrowing money.

The Ashburton District Council has millions of dollars tied up in assets, many of which generate income to keep rate increases as low as possible and, like most councils, it’s always been reluctant to sell those assets off.

But there are times when divesting itself of a little-used or non-cash generating asset makes fiscal sense.

Take the case of development work around the EA Networks Centre. Long term, the vast track of land to the west of the complex will become home to many sporting codes as grounds and facilities are developed. While those grounds will eventually generate income, developing them will take cash and plenty of it.

On the opposite side of the coin, the council owns pockets of land that generate no income, that could be sold at a healthy profit with proceeds used for other projects.

Councillors recently briefly discussed the idea of selling off a strip of Argyle Park. Only two-thirds of the park is used as a sports ground, the remainder – fronting Farm Road – was for years leased to a market gardener and is now a well-grassed paddock.

That paddock, however, could have a new future as a high quality subdivision similar to neighbouring Coniston.

It’s in a prime area of town, section demand is high and sales could net the council a tidy profit.

Yes, reserve land has always been sacrosanct, but commercial reality suggests that if some could be sold off without compromising the overall stocks, then it’s a positive move.

Exchanging an unused piece of extremely valuable residential land for cash that would expedite the development of the EA Networks playing fields isn’t selling off the family silver, it’s just simple commonsense.

Water consumption I believe the “water consumption” article (January 23) contained misleading data, probably due to confusion about the unit “cumec”.

One cumec is a flow rate of one cubic metre of liquid per second. It is not a volume of one cubic metre.

The council threshold is a volume of 25,000 m3 over a day, not 25,000 cumecs as reported.

By my calculations that threshold is an average of only 0.29 cumecs (divide the daily volume by the number of seconds in a day). Quite a difference!

The changing of seasons

s the Silly Season (SS) sinks slowly below the political horizon to be replaced by the Marginally More Significant (MMS), we learn National is riding high in the first of the several hundred polls to be taken before election day, 2017.

National scores 52 per cent and Labour half that figure at 26 per cent, with the legendary “minor parties” well below the radar.

Despite most of the nation having been on the beach these past few weeks, I’m still surprised Labour’s latest leader, Andrew Little, appears to have made so little impact.

He seemed to have acquired a media and screen presence, but obviously not on a voteenhancing scale. No doubt he and his inner henchmen are now working on plan B to ensure the public becomes more aware of the “PM-in-waiting” they are offering and how we should not miss the chance to take advantage of such a golden opportunity.

Meanwhile, Mr Key is hobnobbing with the great, the good and the dubious at the World Economic Forum in the snowy surrounds of the

Finally, the World Cricket Cup approaches. The Black Caps are primed, raring for action and ready for the first ball, to be bowled at the super new Hagley Park oval on February 14.

But how will they fare across the Tasman when they come up against those finely-tuned sledgers in their baggy green caps?

Will the “free and friendly exchange of views” in the middle of the wicket lead to outright fisticuffs or will umpire intervention be able to handle it.

I’m a firm believer of the Martin Crowe school of thought; if an Aussie – or a player from any team – exceeds his brief, he should be sent off.

After all, England and Australia almost went to war over the “Bodyline” series of 1932.

Small business a priority for Labour

BY AUDREY YOUNG Labour leader Andrew Little has begun broadening Labour’s image as as the “jobs party,” not just a party for working labour, but for wealth-creating business, especially small business, and for those who want to be their own boss.

Small business - “the engine room of job growth” - would be a priority for Labour as it developed policy over the next two years.

He made the pledge yesterday in his first state of the nation speech since being elected Labour leader in November.

He also said that dealing with inequality would be a priority.

Small businesses were responsible for nearly a third of New Zealand’s economy last year, and 41 per cent of jobs created last year were in firms with fewer that 20 employees.

The biggest long-term chal-

lenge for New Zealand was where the next generation of wealth creation would come from.

“Not because wealth creation is an end in itself but because a good quality of life for all of us needs strong economic performance.”

“The truth is stark,” he said.

“Doing what we are doing today won’t support the standard of living we as New Zealanders want in the future.

“As a country we need to do things differently. That is going to take courage.

“Government can provide some of the leadership to make a difference but nothing will change unless we are all in it together.”

The dearth of apples at Auckland fruit shops has been evident over the past two weeks.

A slow start to summer has led to a national shortage of New Zealand-grown apples, with some supermarkets able to offer only fruit imported from the United States.

The dearth of new-season apples has led to empty shelves in some fresh produce departments and seen a popular drinks maker switch to apple concentrate.

A representative of Pipfruit New Zealand, the organisation that supports New Zealand’s apple and pear growers, said this year’s apple harvest was between one and two weeks behind schedule.

Gary Jones said there was a natural variation of harvest times every year and the delay was nothing out of the ordinary.

“It’s to do with temperatures ... so Hawke’s Bay is 10 to 14 days later than last year and Nelson is about one week later than last year.”

He said the harvest in Hawkes Bay would begin in mid to late February for the larger-volume export varieties such as Royal Gala. Pacific Beauty would be available now but were not grown in large numbers because of their shorter shelf life.

He said the delay would not affect prices but the harvest could end up being “compact and intense”, meaning a normal number of apples would be harvested over a shorter period.

A lack of apples at Auckland fruit shops and supermarkets has been evident over the past two weeks, with at least five different stores offering slim pickings in the apple aisle.

At Countdown Metro on Auckland’s Victoria Street on Tuesday, only one variety of the fruit, imported from the US, was available in store.

A company spokeswoman blamed the shortage on a cold, wet spring combined with a few hail events.

“We’re currently transitioning from overseas supply of apples to the new-season local apples, so customers may have seen fewer apples on shelf over the last week because of the late season.

“We’re expecting more apples to come in over this week and next.

“In the meantime, we’re managing the supply across all stores as much as possible.”

At New World’s Queen Street supermarket, one variety of New Zealand apple was available alongside several imported varieties.

A spokeswoman for Foodstuffs, Katherine Klouwens, said the lack of apples was due to an unusually wet spring and December.

“There has been a slight delay in the delivery of pip and stone fruit.”

It was not only Kiwis who loved to bite into a crunchy, new-season apple that were affected by the delay, however.

Frucor brand Simply Squeezed has had to use apple concentrate in a few of its Simply Squeezed Super Juice drinks, with a label on bottles saying use of concentrate from Hawke’s Bay apples was due to a “seasonal shortage of apples to press”.

A spokeswoman for Simply Squeezed said two weeks of production had been affected.

A new apple supplier had now been sourced and the juice was being produced from fresh apples again.

Mid Canty bees loving the sun, not the dry – Bray

Mid Canterbury’s bees are soaking up the sun, but doing better on irrigated land.

Rawles Crossing apiarist Roger Bray said bees enjoy a hot day with no wind.

“We are just getting into (honey) production now, and at this point it’s looking better than average,” Mr Bray said.

Although creeks and rivers are drying up, Mr Bray said frequent early morning mists and heavy dews had kept up the water supply necessary for nectar production.

“There’s also plenty of irrigation going on, so there’s always a puddle or two for insects to drink from,” Mr Bray said.

Midland Apiaries field operation manager Bob Dargue also said irrigation had boosted honey production.

“Where we’ve got a lot of irrigation, we are ticking along okay, but things are certainly tightening up where it’s dry,” he said.

“But we’re a lot luckier than some because a lot of our hives are on pollination, in irrigated crops, and the rest of them are up around Staverley – it’s dry-

ing up now, but it can usually hold its own up there until it does rain.

“However, a lot of areas have suffered.”

In cooler years the pollination hives don’t produce much harvestable honey.

“We feed them before they go on the crop, and then they will consume whatever they’ve got during pollination – but this year with a bit of luck, we might get a bit of honey. They should be able to sustain themselves in any case.”

Bees require a lot of water to convert nectar into honey, and are adept at finding it.

“They just need a dripping tap or a puddle, but they definitely need a lot of water,” Mr Dargue said.

“Last year we had the rain which kept the clover and weeds on the roadsides going, but we didn’t have the heat – there are so many variables, but on the whole it hasn’t been a bad year, we’ve had a lot worse.

“We got most of our honey in during the first flush a month or so ago and its tapered off from there.”

Retired Staverley apiarist John Symes isn’t convinced the dry weather hasn’t impacted on the honey crop.

“It’s been dry and has affected the honey production, that’s for sure,” he said.

“You can’t have nectar without water.”

Mr Syme said it was the driest he’d seen Staverley in 30 years.

“We’ve got a pond in front of our house and it’s the lowest I’ve ever seen it. The bees are picking up enough water from the dew and the odd creek, but it must affect everything,” he said.

TINWALD SALE An increase in prime lamb numbers saw prices hold on a par with last week’s Tinwald sheep sale.

Heavy, woolly lambs fetched $110-$121, mediums $90-$105, and lighter lambs $75$85.

Top weight woolly ewes achieved $85-

$100, mediums $70-$80 and lighter sheep, $50-$65. A line of southdown-cross, mixed sex store lambs, advertised on account of CR Tubb of Carew, fetched $58-$65, while another line of southdown lambs offered on behalf of AH and JK Wilkinson from Chertsey, sold from $40-$58.

Mr McCarthy said farmers were further frustrated by the low levels of transpar-

ency and accountability exhibited by their co-ops and felt cheated by a perceived lack of honesty at last year’s co-op company farmer meetings.

“The promises are turning to dust, like our pastures,” he said.

“The $100+ a lamb of last year was an aberration and we’re back to worse than a year ago.

“Schedules are falling again, and the coops are leading the way and stretching farmer loyalty to the limit.”

Distinctive quality

I

t’s rather obvious that Kiwis love their SUVs! For while the Corolla was the top-selling new vehicle last year, passenger cars in total were outsold by SUVs. Especially small/mid size SUVs of which Kia’s Sportage and close relation, the Hyundai ix35, were significant contributors to this growth in popularity.

So why are SUVs so popular?

Well, buyers say the high driving position, view of the road ahead, ease of entry/exit and versatility are the main attractions.

But then, and particularly so in the North Island, many SUVs never venture out of suburbia.

Or if they do, stay on sealed roads so don’t really need four-wheel-drive capability.

Hence the introduction of many 2WD SUVs. Recent visual changes to the latest, Czech Republic built Sportages are subtle and minor.

For no doubt it was a case of why mess around with Peter Schreyer’s original, great-looking, edgy styling.

The only slight downside from these contours is that vision to the rear is a bit restricted.

These minor exterior styling tweaks include restyled headlights, LED day-lights, a new front grille, and smarter alloy wheels.

Size-wise the Sportage is slightly smaller than the RAV4 or CX5, so the luggage space is also just a little bit less generous, although it reassuringly, has a full size spare.

So while exterior changes are cosmetic, those done inside both have a definite Euro touch about them

with increased refinement courtesy of more soft-touch surfaces, new seat materials and changes to the already clear dials and straight-forward controls.

EX and Limited models have easy to use touch-screens, reversing cameras and front/rear parking sensors.

The Limiteds also have heated leather seats front and rear, dual zone climate-air, Infinity sound system and sat/nav.

Rather strangely, the LX Urban misses out on the reversing camera and just has rear sensors.

There’s great space and comfort in the front.

Also in the rear, however larger/ taller passengers therein may notice the inward curve of the rear doors and possibly tight head space.

There’s five models – three petrols, the 2WD only LX Urban, plus 2WD or AWD EX and Limiteds.

They’re are priced from $34,240 to $48,490 and equipped accordingly.

Meanwhile the three diesels are all AWD. They come in the same spec (LX, EX or Limited) and cost from $44,240 to $54,490.

The petrols get a new direct injection 2-litre engine. It produces the same 122kW as previously but more torque at lower revs - 205Nm at 4,000rpm.

This shows with a noticeable im-

provement in both performance and smoothness.

The diesels continue with the ever impressive 2-litre R-series turbodiesel delivering 35kW of power and 392Nm of torque.

With all of the latter on hand from 1800-2500rpm, it’s obviously strong mid-range, just where needed for all types of everyday driving.

There’s minimal turbo lag away from standstill, and this engine, in combination with the revised and quick shifting 6-speed auto (used by all the range) means it’s quick away from the traffic lights, yet then is a very relaxed cruiser.

And a keen hill climber.

The AWD system operates mainly in front-drive mode engaging spontaneously as and when needed. It has a lock mode.

Both the steering and suspension have been re-tuned in Oz for downunder conditions.

The result: these Sportage (I drove both the 2WD Limited and LX diesel) steer much better and feel more agile than before.

With the Limited you can, to a certain extent, select the response and amount of steering “feel” delivered.

Normal seemed best around town, while I preferred Sport on the open road.

And the positive results of those suspension changes become obvious with the very first drive.

For although it’s now firmer and handles both neatly and predictably, it copes very well with major bumps and provides a very settled, smooth ride.

Lots of effective measures make it quieter overall as well.

FINALE These revised, but still distinctive, better equipped Sportages serve up a nicely varied menu of style, quality, with comfort, and ride quality to match. They’re likeable and easy to drive.

For those doing frequent longer distance drives or lots of towing, the diesel would be my choice. However, for general day-to-day driving and SH1 cruising I’d be happy with the 2WD version, especially the Limited.

Ashcoll Cricket Club While the 2015 cricket gets under way this weekend, the club said farewell to its leaving players at paintball last weekend and handed out some annual prizes.

But first, some thank yous to the following for their efforts during the season (apologies if anyone is missed): Coaches Mark, Greg, Jock and Armand (and all their helpers), chief groundsman Mic and his helpers Jock, Harry and Mike and to all the others that have sat on the rollers or pushed mowers to keep the pitches in form, Gail for organising the raffle rosters and looking after the uniforms and the unenviable job of coordinating the Australian trip.

Special thanks to Dick and Sue Dudley whose long association with the club has finished with Tom’s departure.

They have helped out in many ways and this is much appreciated.

All the members of the 2014 first XI squad were handed a photograph with their current year playing stats (they can all improve on their batting!) and the leavers were presented a miniature bat with career stats. The batting and bowling trophies both went to Kieran Hunt, who topped the season stats with an average of 19.15 runs and 33 wickets (average 12.48 runs/wicket). The Patron’s Cup was awarded to Deon Biggs.

Honours board achievements include two five-wicket bags to Scott Punselie, a six-wicket bag to Kieran Hunt, and centuries (in the year 9-10 team) to Gareth Hunt (3), Liam O’Connor (2) and Ben Niles. We also think some of the younger boys may have got five wickets, but we need to do some research.

Ashburton Golf Club A wonderful weekend down at the links - Neil Mcdonald and Hamish Niles took apart a strong field to pick up the Jim McKenzie Memorial Trophy. On Sunday a big crowd were treated to some great entertainment in the Hydraulink shootout final. The 19 qualifiers all played their part in this fabulous theatre.

The front nine saw quite a few putt offs to sort out the fallers, but then moving into the back nine, the pressure was turned up a wee bit, and the slightest mistake was punished. In the end one

Ashburton Horticultural Society It was great to see most of our members at the first meeting for 2015. We welcomed one new member and one visitor, which is a positive start to the year. Main topic for the evening was planning for the Annual Garden Competition to be held on Sunday 8 February. Two judges will be coming from Christchurch and we look forward to our usual enjoyable day. Speaker for the evening was Ursula Kitchen who spoke of her work on farms in Ireland and Wales as a lab technician with the dairy breeding programme.

Ashburton Pakeke Lions Club President Lion Bob Rodgers welcomed members to the meeting. A Minutes Silence was observed for the late Lion Ivan Lyttle who was a foundation member of the Club. Lion Arthur Pawsey thanked the Day Care Drivers and advised that a new roster has been circulated and Lion Noel Lowe reminded members of this year’s district convention to be held in Dunedin on the 20th – 22nd March. Lion Meredith Lowe then spoke on Charitable Trusts, Audits etc to be reviewed over the next 12 months and he then introduced Policeman Jim Sole who was our guest speaker. Ashburton Rose Group The monthly meeting of the Ashburton Rose Group was held on January 14 at the Catholic Community Rooms. We had 12 members present and apologies were received from 4 members. Cultural notes were discussed for this time of year most important keep deheading to get good growth for next flowering and keep up the watering.

We then had a hands on lesson with four of our members to learn Floral Art and when we had finished there were many lovely flower arrangements. Our next meeting 11th February we will be visiting Cuthbertsons Dahlia Gardens at Hinds we are to meet West St carpark 10.30am and bring own lunch and flask.

Our Table Rose Show was held for the month and there were many lovely roses on show.

Other winners in games played: Triples Craig Carter, Simon Fleetwood and Jeff Nowell had a win. Final of the triples will be between Craig’s team and Brent Mayson, Adrian Kemp and Roger Callaghan.

Pairs David Isherwood and Neil Owen had a win and Singles Craig Carter had a win. In the Ladies Wendy Blackwell and Melva Middleton had a win in the pairs. On Saturday we have our Doug Hood open.

MSA Outdoor Bowls Last week a bus full of Happy Bowlers and supporters travelled to Christchurch for the first round of the home and away Loftus Cup encounter. M.S.A. won the cup and this will be contested for on March 15th when Richmond visit us. M.S.A. now lead 144 while Richmond have 83 points. Hopefully we can retain Trophy to live again in its rightful place in the Club cabinet.

Ladies have commenced their Championship 4’s and after a closely fought match, Robyn Parkin, Shirley Taylor, Wendy Petrie, Marg Watson, defeated Joan Hardy, Joyce Cleghorn, Rene Devereux, Helen Dowdle. Next round to be played on 27th.

Congratulations Dave Muir, Guildford Lane, John Argyle, Larry Neal gained 3rd place at Hinds in the Milson Cup. A beautiful day was had by all when the Ladies took to the green for the playing of the Annual Fours Tournament sponsored by Smith and Sons. Winners were; W. Watson, S. Holdom, S. Doig R. Johnston. A very successful day played in very warm conditions. Thank you all for your support.

Sandy Saussey welcomed everybody to the first meeting of the New Year. There was a special mention to Patricia Corbett for being awarded the Ashburton Council Community award. The movie on 4th February at 11am in the Regent Theatre is “The Imitation Game”. Audrey told members about a trip on 30th March to Christchurch by bus for an adventure day out. Joan Prendergast shared with us her holiday adventure while holidaying in the North Island. An afternoon picnic boat trip turned into a very long experience after their boat was left high and dry and had to wait many hours for the tide to come in. They enjoyed the lovely bird life on the Island walking along the beach. The raffle was won by Jill Bennett. Our main speaker was Danial Naude “Road Safety Coordinator” from Timaru who talked about Roundabouts, intersections and mobility scooters. Also Road Conditions, Distractions and falling asleep that cause accidents.

He explained the correct ways to enter and leave roundabouts, at give ways and stop signs. He said we should drive to be safe and watch out for others. As we get older we have vision changes and our brains slow down. There are several programmes that all people young and old can attend to brush up their driving skills. Mobility scooters should be ridden on the footpaths and not on the roads and cross at pedestrian crossings. The meeting closed at 11.30 am. The next meeting is on the 23 February 2015.

Waireka Croquet Play started back at Waireka on the 7th January and straight into competition.

15 Golf Croquet Players and 2 association players attended the fun day at Aorangi, Timaru on the 2nd January with Jackie Rollinson showing the flag for Waireka by winning ahead of the large contingent of golf croquet players from all around the association – 55 in all.

Three association players competed in the Windsor Richards tournament held at Allenton on the 10th/11th January. No accolades to Waireka with 1st and 2nd going back to Timaru. Well done Allenton.

Today two pairs attended the annual Lil Rawlinson tournament at Methven with the pairing of Marion Marshall and Logan McCorkindale Waireka, winning the Lil Rawlinson tray and Marjorie Smith and Jill Cribb Allenton picking up the plate. Methven have done a fantastic job resurrecting their third lawn making play much more enjoyable. We wish them well as they continue their quest for lawn improvement.

Lastly we must wish our most Junior members Edmund Fordyce 14 and Logan McCorkindale 15 all the very best.

Both have been chosen to play for NZ in the Under 21 World Golf Croquet Tournament commencing in Christchurch on Sunday. Both deserve their selection and, we as a Club, are extremely proud of them and wish them and NZ all the best for this prestigious event.

Ellis looking to confirm spot

A big weekend should secure Hinds cyclist Lauren Ellis a ticket to Paris.

Cycling New Zealand has challenged riders to produce world class performances at the National Track Championships starting in Cambridge today as the championships for elite and under 19 riders double as a final trial for selection to next month’s UCI track world championships in Paris.

Ellis is confident she has already done enough to book her place with the women’s team pursuit but always maintains she isn’t one to assume a selection, and will be wanting some good results.

“I’m pretty confident I’ll be selected but someone could step up and put their hand up so you just never know,” Ellis said.

New Zealand riders have produced strong performances over the past 12 months and in the recent UCI World Cup series with Ellis’ revamped women’s team pursuit third in the current Olympic rankings of nations list.

The team sprint rank second, while the men’s team pursuit, men’s omnium, sprint and keirin are all ranked fourth.

Nonetheless, the door has been left open for riders to put their hand up over the four days of competition.

“You still want to perform this weekend but you don’t want to peak until Paris so it’s a fine line.”

Cycling New Zealand high performance director Mark Elliott said the selectors will be looking for performances capable of securing medals in Paris.

“Eighteen months out from Rio it is critical to have our riders stepping up to medal level rides at worlds,” Elliott said.

The national championships, like the worlds, will carry the full range of events but most interest is likely to centre on four Olympic events comprising the individual sprint, team sprint, keirin and team pursuit - with the omnium competed for in a separate national event later in the year.

Ellis will contest the individual pursuit today, points race tomorrow and the scratch race on Saturday.

For Sunday’s team pursuit she is excited to join Ashburton’s Frances Smith and Julia Tarbotton, as well as Waimate’s Hollie Edmonston, with Ellis and Edmonston in the team sprint.

Alex Hooper will also fly the Mid Canterbury flag in the elite men’s racing.

After three legs of the Sevens World Series, New Zealand are in third behind Fiji and leaders South Africa. They must finish in the top four in the series to earn automatic qualification for the Olympics in Rio next year.

“We are very much looking forward to Wellington as the city really turns it on for all the teams. It’s always very special to play in front of a home crowd as we only play in New Zealand once a year.”

Dave Rennie is not putting all his coaching eggs in the All Blacks basket for when his new Chiefs contract expires in 2017. Steve Hansen’s All Blacks contract also expires at the end of 2017 so there will be two prime vacancies arising at the same time. Her most recent victory over a mile at Addington was something to behold and the speed she showed in that performance will bring her right into contention against almost all the best pacers of her sex in New Zealand.

Popular horseman Blair Orange will head into the night on 999 career driving wins – just one shy of reaching a notable milestone in any driver’s career.

Commentator Mark McNamara put a public plea out on Tuesday for the public to get behind his search for win 1000 by encouraging racegoers to wear something orange to support him.

Abbott wins award Sean Abbott has been named Australia’s Young Cricketer of the Year at the Allan Border Medal, capping a traumatic year for the NSW allrounder. Abbott did not attend the award ceremony at Carriageworks in Sydney on Tuesday night, due to his commitments with the Sydney Sixers ahead of last night’s Big Bash League final in Canberra.

Rest day for McCullum?

New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum is expected to be rested from today’s final one-day international against Sri Lanka as the hosts employ a carousel policy to freshen players for the World Cup. McCullum, Luke Ronchi, Corey Anderson and Martin Guptill have played each of the six games so far in this series, including the wash-out in Auckland.

Batting coach Craig McMillan hinted rest and rotation would form part of the build-up, particularly with a view to giving Tom Latham an opportunity as a back-up opener and wicketkeeper.

“It is a possibility,” McMillan said. “Most of the players have had a bit of a rest.

It’s something we planned to do throughout the series.

There’s still a bit of cricket [three ODIs and two warmup matches] before the World Cup, so it’s important everyone gets a game off to freshen up mentally.

“We’re pretty comfortable where Brendon’s at. He’s more than happy to sit the odd one out and let Kane take over

[as captain]. Tom is the likely replacement. He can cover any batting position from one to six, but it’s likely he’d go to the top of the order.”

Rest and rotation tends to generate pangs of anxiety for New Zealand sports fans whose memories recall the policy’s use during the All Blacks 2007 Rugby World Cup failure.

Allenton pair play off for Canty title

A Mid Canterbury bowler will claim the Canterbury pairs title as two local bowlers go headto-head in the Canterbury finals this weekend.

Allenton bowlers Sandra Keith and Cait Bassett will play off in the pairs final at the Fendalton Bowling Club on Saturday.

All the Canterbury titles will be decided this weekend, with Keith also in the singles final on Sunday.

The recalled Black Jack teams up with Dunsandel’s Serena Matthews in the pairs with the experienced duo to meet the young combination of Bassett and Oxford’s Katelyn Inch.

Keith and Bassett will go oneon-one tomorrow night in the Allenton Club’s championship

singles, and then again on Saturday in the Canterbury pairs.

They have met a few times before with Keith taking the honours but Bassett hopes to get at least one win over Keith this weekend.

“If we play like we did last weekend it will be good game but it always comes down to who plays better on the day,” Bassett said.

Bassett played for the New Zealand under 18s in the transTasman test series last year with Inch and together they have made some big strides on the greens this summer.

“She’s one of my good friends so it’s nice to play alongside her.”

ment in Blenheim on February 8, and will also play for the South Island development team to play the North Island in Wellington on February 21-22.

The youngsters will need to be on their game to topple the experienced opponents, who have some unfinished business.

Keith and Matthews return to the pairs final after going down to Burnside’s Tayla Bruce and Mandy Boyd 16-18 last year, but they did win the fours with Pam Clarke and Karolyn Boon.

Keith had to overcome teammate Matthews on the way to the singles final where she meets Burnside’s Kirsten Rowe.

Mid Canterbury bowlers also have a title on offer at the weekend, with the Sub Centre triples to be played for at the Ashburton bowling club on Sunday.
