Mid Canterbury traffic offences have skyrocketed over the past five years, according to figures released by police. Increases have also been re-
corded across Canterbury in speeding, warrant of fitness, cellphone and general driving offences. However, the number of people drink driving in the region has dropped significantly.
Police figures show the number of recorded traffic offences increased by a whopping 137 per cent in Rakaia, from 284 in the financial year ending in 2010, to 673 in the last financial year. Traffic offences more than
doubled in Methven over the same period, rising from 501 offences to 1028 in the last financial year. Ashburton also saw a substantial increase, with traffic offences up by 49 per cent over the past
five years. More than 10,000 traffic offences were recorded in the town in the last financial year.
