Thirty-two Mid Canterbury scouts boarded a bus at dawn today, bound for an adventure of a lifetime.

The scouts, plus nine leaders, will spend the next 10 days under canvas at Renwick, Blenheim, as part of a major jamboree involving about 4500 people.

The jamboree happens every three years and the Mid Canterbury scouts have been fundraising for 18 months to cover the $1200 cost per person.

Excitement levels were high as the group boarded the bus for a trip via Lewis Pass. They will arrive around 3pm then unpack tents, kitchen and washing facilities ready for action.

Scout Ryan Cox said he had sold pine cones and cooked plenty of sausages at fundraising sizzles and he was looking forward to the camp, especially the motorcycling activity.

Top 2017 science finds A year is a short time in science but a lot happened in 2016. Niwa highlights its top scientific endeavours of the past 12 months and reveals we know a lot more about a whole range of things than we did this time last year.

March Scientists pinpointed agriculture as the most likely reason for rising methane levels in the atmosphere. Research, led by Niwa atmospheric scientist Dr Hinrich Schaefer, ruled out fossil fuel production as the major cause.

The amount of methane in the earth’s atmosphere is estimated to have increased by about 150 per cent since 1750. A plateau was observed between 1999 and 2006 but it then began to rise again.

Data indicated the source of the increase was methane produced by bacteria, of which the most likely sources were rice paddies and livestock. It was already known that the methane originated from regions in South East Asia, China and India which are dominated by rice production and agriculture.

Methane is an important gas to deal with when it comes to mitigating climate change.

June Since 1972 Niwa has operated a Clean Air Monitoring Station at Baring Head, near Wellington.

global understanding of greenhouse gases. In June, Baring Head’s carbon dioxide readings officially passed 400 parts per million (ppm), a level last reached more than three million years ago.

Globally, the 400ppm threshold represents an atmospheric landmark as a focus for the urgency to tackle climate change. The Baring Head reading was particularly significant because most emissions occur in the Northern Hemisphere and the air arriving here originates far to the south,

away from human activities.

Carbon dioxide is the primary greenhouse gas contributing to warming of the atmosphere and reducing levels to below 400pm would take many years of emissions reduction.

August The remarkable long-distance swimming abilities of penguins were revealed after Niwa scientists tracked 100 birds over winter in the Southern Ocean. No one had previously known where the sub-Antarctic rockhopper and Snares penguins went while they were at sea between April and December each year.

It turned out that the penguins travelled more than 15,000km in six months. Campbell Island was once the world’s largest breeding colony of rockhoppers,but between 1942 and 1984 the population dropped by about 94 per cent.

Scientists have speculated the decline may be due to a change in the penguins’ diet and believe something is going on in the ocean over winter that is causing it.

October In October, Niwa began a project to find out what lies beneath the waters of the Marlborough Sounds using cutting-edge multibeam technology which emits a fan of sound beams. In this way Niwa collects a snapshot of the extent and distribution of different habitats on the seafloor.

Other technology can also determine the roughness of the seafloor, the amount and size of sediment while data recorded in the water column can used to determine habitats, identify seeps and plumes, detect fish schools and other features.

It’s been 70 years since the last survey was done of the Sounds – an area that makes up about 20 per cent of the New Zealand coastline. New features are being revealed that may provide new research ventures for marine science, as well as providing a base for assessing the effects of economic activity. The information will also be used to draw new nautical charts.

Tangaroa researching the Hikurangi subduction zone off the North Island’s East Coast when the mW 7.8 earthquake struck on November 14.

Given the expertise on board, and the need to find out how the earthquake had changed the seabed offshore, the vessel was diverted south.

Scientists aboard took coring samples and mapped the seabed along the Marlborough coast south to Kaikoura.

They discovered new scarps, or breaks, confirming the rupture of the Needles Fault, which is the offshore extension of the Kekrengu Fault. This fault rupture is now believed to extend for about 70km – 36km on land and 34km under the sea.

December After months of collecting and analysing weather data, Niwa climate scientists were well aware that 2016 was tracking to be the hottest year on record for New Zealand. Summer 2015/16 was particularly warm and then autumn set some new temperature records making it the second warmest autumn on record.

Winter followed suit, with a balmy June and July with temperatures above average. It turned out that August ended up being the only month cooler than average month this year.

The previous record was set in 1998 but what Niwa scientists say is that the figures are in line with global average temperatures and confirm the longer-term trends of climate change. Globally, 2016 is also set to be the hottest year on record by a significant margin. It will also mean a new high set for the planet for the third year in a row.

Fire at Mt Alford A helicopter carrying a monsoon bucket was used to douse a fire near Mt Alford on Tuesday.

The fire broke out in a patch of gorse on a property at the top of Winterslow Road, near Staveley, shortly before 3pm.

Three fire appliances were deployed to the scene along with a Mt Hutt helicopter. The pilot used Taylor Stream to fill

the monsoon bucket. Firefighters were at the site for about two-and-a-half hours.

Meanwhile, local fire crews had a quiet time over the festive season, Ashburton chief fire officer Alan Burgess said.

The Ashburton brigade assisted with a medical matter on Christmas Day and attended a minor vehicle smash in Tinwald on Tuesday.

Post-Christmas rush for recycling depot Recyclers wasted no time offloading Christmas rubbish yesterday morning.

At one point the queue of vehicles stretched out the gate at the EnviroWaste Ashburton recycling depot.

Staff were kept on the hop directing traffic and emptying bins on what is traditionally the biggest recycling day of the year.

Down the road on McNally Street, Wastebusters was also doing steady business, despite losing the solid waste contract to Envirowaste earlier this month.

Wasterbusters manager Sharon Breakwell said people had continued to support the service, often dropping cardboard polystyrene on their way to the EnviroWaste depot.

The re-use store had continued to be well supported, along with the green waste drop-off and compost sales areas.

In brief Ashburton wifi hotspot Ashburton has made it onto the wifi hot spots list this summer. As part of Spark’s efforts to help Kiwis stay connected over the summer holidays, the communications company is putting wifi campervans on the road and they’ll be calling at 30 locations. At each stopping point the campervans will bring summer giveaways, charging stations and Samsung tablets that will be available for use in shaded lounge areas so holidaymakers can take a break out of the sun. Akld boy injured at play facility A 4-year-old boy was seriously injured at a children’s play facility in Auckland yesterday.

Police said they were alerted to the incident at East Tamaki’s Bounce and Beyond at 12.20pm on Wednesday.

St John Ambulance took the boy to Middlemore Hospital in serious condition.

As of 2.15pm Wednesday, the boy was stable and comfortable, a Counties Manukau DHB spokeswoman said.

Death unexplained Police are treating the death of a man found by a kayaker in the Waikato River on Tuesday as “unexplained”. Hamilton police are investigating how the man ended up in the river. A kayaker out for an evening paddle found the body around 7pm near Ann Street in Hamilton. .

Diver dies at beach A man died after suffering a heart attack while diving off the coast near Masterton yesterday.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident at Riversdale Beach.

The man was pulled from the water and given CPR by lifesaving staff as they waited for the rescue helicopter, but the man died before the helicopter’s arrival.

In the wash up from this year’s local body election, the numbers paint a clear picture of the Ashburton District as one that remains engaged with the voting process.

While voter numbers around New Zealand continued their downward trend, sitting at an average of 44 per cent, in the Ashburton District the participation rate was 53.21 per cent, up more than 4 per cent on 2013. The Ashburton District Council is still counting the cost of running this year’s election, but it has already been billed $128,990 by Elecitonz.com for its external election management costs. The council initially foots the bill for all costs for all issues, but approximately 50 per cent of this is recovered from the Canterbury DHB, Environment Canterbury and the Ashburton Trust.

Christmas elderly wishes 2016 T

he Christmas spirit is definitely alive in the Ashburton District.

When the Guardian put out a call for people to lend a helping hand to the elderly this festive season, the community responded in large numbers Dozens of people asked for help and dozens of people were keen to give some of their time to make the festive season a little easier for a stranger. While it is impossible to thank every person individually, our reporters have been out and about taking photos as some of those requests for help were granted.

Guardian reporter Jaime Pitt-MacKay talked to the people who were helped and those who did the helping.

Grateful to have clean windows After her professional window washing neighbour moved away, Cameron Street resident Ruth Cunningham had been struggling to keep her windows clean. Ill health has prevented her from doing them herself.

At Park Street Day Centre the word had been spread of the Elderly Christmas Wishes campaign and Ruth knew of several people

getting their windows washed.

She decided that getting the inside of hers done would be fantastic. However, when she discovered that she could also get the outsides done she was even happier.

Having moved to New Zealand in the 1970s, Ruth has no family in New Zealand. But while she has family in Australia, struggling with the heat there at Christmas time

The gift of giving

Trellis spruced up Green-thumbed Wellington Street resident Shirley May takes a lot of pride in her garden and the birds that inhabit it.

The birds certainly have a routine – waiting on the garden trellis and singing their song if Shirley is late with their food.

This trellis, however, was becoming a bit rundown, requiring a new lick of paint and a few extra nails.

So when the word spread around Park Street Day Centre of the Elderly Christmas Wishes, Shirley knew precisely what she wanted done. Unable to complete the task herself, someone doing it

for her was “fantastic”.

The Guardian’s Steve Stratford took up the challenge.

Heading round one evening Steve stripped back some of the remaining paint on the trellis and returned the next morning armed with paintbrushes and tools to finish the job.

Loose bits of trellis were nailed in place and a fresh coat of paint applied to even the most hard-toreach places.

Shirley was delighted with Steve’s work, but was a little concerned that the birds might come along and get green paint on their feet.

Christmas is the time for giving and that was the message Kate Shaw was trying to spread this Christmas.

Kate had initially put her name forward to help with a wish of taking someone out for afternoon tea, but these wishes were already filled.

Instead, Kate jumped at the chance of doing some Christmas baking for flat residents at Elizabeth Place.

Christmas cake, shortbread and truffles were made with the help of daughter Hanna and packaged festively.

Kate encouraged her young daughter to help as she believes it is important for children to learn a major part of Christmas is about giving.

The residents were pleasantly surprised at their Christmas gifts. Having opened the door after an unexpected knock, they ended up closing them with a grin on their faces and a collection of baked delights.

Sadly some residents were not home at the time, so presents were left to be discovered on their arrival.

Sheep-proof fencing

With Stitches, the rescued family ewe, moving in soon and hazelnuts on the grow, Joan Strachan was in need of a fence to protect her hazelnuts.

So the Guardian got in contact with Adam Graham at AG Fencing. He didn’t hesitate and was more than happy to help with the construction of the fence.

After taking a look at the job and the very old posts and netting, he decided they needed to do more labour to get the job done properly.

Adam called in Mark Robertson

from Great Southern about posts for the job. Mark was also more than happy to jump on board and provided the fence posts for free.

Up went the fence and afterwards Adam and Cheryl turned their hands to gardening by spraying the weeds on the driveway.

It was great to give back and awesome to see just how grateful Joan was for what they did, they said. It was the best feeling seeing Joan’s smile when they had finished the fencing and spraying.

“That’s what Christmas is really about,” he said.

Japan PM’s visit historic In a historic pilgrimage, the leaders of Japan and the United States took to the hallowed waters of Pearl Harbor yesterday to prove that even the bitterest enemies can become allies.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe did not apologise, but conceded Japan “must never repeat the horrors of war again”.

Seventy-five years after Japan’s surprise attack sent America marching into World War Two, Abe and President Barack Obama peered down at the rusting wreckage of the USS Arizona, clearly visible in the tranquil, teal water. More than 1000 US war dead remain entombed in the submerged ship, and in a show of respect, Obama and Abe dropped purple petals into the water and stood in silence.

“As the prime minister of Japan, I offer my sincere and everlasting condolences to the souls of those who lost their lives here, as well as to the spirits of all the brave men and women whose lives were taken by a war that commenced in this very place,” Abe said later at nearby Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

That was the closest Abe would get to an apology for the attack. And it was enough for Obama, who also declined

Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher dies

Arrests in cold case

Carrie Fisher, a daughter of Hollywood royalty who gained pop-culture fame as Princess Leia in the original Star Wars and turned her struggles with addiction and mental illness into wickedly funny books, a hit film and a one-woman stage show, died yesterday after falling ill aboard a flight last week. She was 60.

“Carrie was one of a kind ... brilliant, original. Funny and emotionally fearless. She lived her life, bravely,” Star Wars costar Harrison Ford said in a statement.

Fisher, the daughter of actress Debbie Reynolds and singer Eddie Fisher, had been hospitalised since Friday, when paramedics responded to a report of a patient in distress at Los Angeles airport.

Her family gave no details on the emergency, but media reports said she had suffered a heart attack.

“Thank you to everyone who has embraced the gifts and talents of my beloved and amazing daughter,” Reynolds wrote on her Facebook page. “I am grateful for your thoughts and prayers that are now guiding her to her next stop. Love Carrie’s Mother.”

The arrest of two men who allegedly raped a woman in Brisbane more than five years ago shows no case is ever considered “unsolvable”, detectives say.

The 20-year-old was walking along Manning Street, South Brisbane, to catch a bus home after leaving a nearby venue late at night in mid-April, 2011, when she was set upon.

Two men allegedly forced her into an alleyway and she suffered severe internal and external injuries during the attack.

Police last week made a fresh appeal for information after detectives from the sex crime unit joined the investigation and on Thursday morning, two local men were charged.

A 24-year-old arrested in Brisbane and a 32-year-old who was arrested in northern NSW both face charges of rape, sexual assault and deprivation of liberty.

The pair are known to one another.

Detective Inspector Garry Watts wouldn’t reveal what new information led to the breakthrough, but said the renewed appeal played a role. “It certainly assisted, yes, I can say that,” he said in Brisbane.

But Fisher is best remembered as the headstrong Princess Leia in the original Star Wars in 1977, her hair styled in futuristic braided buns. She uttered the immortal phrase “Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, you’re my only hope.”

She reprised the role in Episode VII of the series, Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015, and her digitally rendered image appears in the newest installment, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

“She was extremely smart; a talented actress, writer and comedienne with a very colourful personality that everyone loved,” Star Wars creator

George Lucas said in a statement. “In Star Wars she was our great and powerful princess feisty, wise and full of hope in a role that was more difficult than most people might think.”

Fisher long battled drug addiction and mental illness. She said she smoked pot at 13, used LSD by 21 and was diagnosed as bipolar at 24. She was treated with electroshock therapy and medication.

Her ever-present bulldog, Gary Fisher, had his own Twitter and Instagram account. (“Saddest tweets to tweet.

Mommy is gone. I love you @ carrieffisher,” the dog’s Twitter feed read.)

Besides her mother, Fisher is survived by her brother, Todd Fisher, and her daughter, Billie Lourd.

Watership Down author dies Richard Adams, the author of Watership Down, has died aged 96, his daughter has said. The writer, from Whitchurch, Hampshire, died on Christmas Eve. “Richard’s much-loved family announce with sadness that their dear father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away peacefully at 10pm on Christmas Eve,” his daughter said.

The World War Two veteran conjured up Watership Down during bedtime storytelling sessions with his daughters, Rosamond and Juliet. The girls adored hearing the rabbits’ adventures, set in the Hampshire countryside. And at their request, aged 52, he put pen to paper.

On Monday, Sony Music Global’s account tweeted that the chart-topping pop star was “dead by accident” and even included an “RIP Britney” with a crying emoji, while another post simply read: “RIP Britney Spears, 1981-2016! (sic)” But Sony has since clarified the situation, revealing that its account was hacked and sent its apologies to Britney and her fans. H

ow many days does it take to make a Boxing Day sale?

A growing number it seems as each year the massive postChristmas spend-up stretches out further beyond the original one-day extravaganza that has now changed the face of Christmas shopping for many.

Finding that post-Christmas, the gifts you paid full price for pre-Christmas will be on sale, often at half their original price is to say the least, annoying.

But what are the options – hold off gift giving until the new year, or buy a year in advance?

There’s something a little odd about buying a gift 12 months out.

It certainly takes the ‘chosen with care and thought’ aspect out of gift shopping, turning it into a far more mercenary affair.

It also adds an element of risk.

What’s considered highly desirable or appropriate this year, might be wildly off the mark or out of date the next.

And is it a win for retailers?

If they’re cutting prices by 50 per cent, they clearly need to sell twice as much during the sale period as pre-sale.

That Christmas is now a grossly commercialised affair is not new, but there’s something bizarre about the lemming-like rush to malls the day after gifts have been unwrapped to start buying up large all over again.

A big player in the Boxing Day sale mania is the growing popularity of gift vouchers.

Each year the number of these bought and redeemed apparently increases as gift-givers seek to avoid the error of giving the wrong gift.

But on the flip side, thanks to prices tumbling in the postChristmas sales, they’re also giving the recipient the opportunity to get far more bang for their buck.

That’s good news for retailers as most often more is spent in redeeming a voucher than its face value.

If gifts are all about dollars and cents, then vouchers and sales make sense; but is that what gift giving is all about?

There’s still something incredibly special about receiving something from a giver you know has taken time and care choosing an item they believe will be received with appreciation – not exchanged or auctioned off to the highest Trademe bidder.

Overseas wool demand weaker As New Zealand heads into its main wool production season, weak overseas demand for the fibre is likely to see the country’s stockpiles rise to the highest level since the Global Financial Crisis eight years ago.

The market for crossbred wool, which accounts for about 80 per cent of the national clip, is under pressure due to high levels of finished inventory in China, a shrinking Chinese manufacturing sector, weak European demand following the Brexit vote, and continued competition from synthetic fibres.

Prices for some out-of-favour wool types are at their lowest level in more than a decade, with lamb wool, hogget wool and oddments such as bellies, pieces and crutchings the worst affected, said Malcolm Ching, an executive at New Zealand Wool Services International, a unit of Australia’s Lempriere and the nation’s largest wool exporter.

He estimates farmer returns for crossbred wools will be between 30-to-40 per cent lower than the past two seasons, and says the current market ranks among the three biggest events to weigh on the industry in his 36-year career.

Still, he said the largest price reductions were in the areas of lowest volume, limiting the impact on farmer returns. Reasonable returns remain for body wool, although demand is limited to good quality wool.

New Zealand wool exports for the 11 months through November were worth $614 million, 19 per cent below the same period last year.

“You have this uncertainty over when the market is going to stop falling and clients say ‘I’m going to hang off, I won’t buy this week, I

Some farmers had refused to sell their wool at lower prices, and with limited space in shearing sheds, brokers and private merchants were scrambling for storage space heading into the main shearing season.

“They are starting to get concerned about the amount of space they will have available,” Ching said. “We have been operating over the last few seasons very much from a hand-to-mouth scenario so most people haven’t held onto additional storage. Now we get into a scenario where it could become an issue with where it is going to be stored.”

Pumpkin Patch owes $59.5 million to its bank and at least $6.6 million to other creditors, receivers KordaMentha said in their first report on the failed children’s clothing retailer.

The company was tipped into receivership by its lenders and appointed voluntary administrators in October after failing to reinvent itself in the face of shrinking sales and too much debt. KordaMentha’s Neale Jackson and Brendon Gibson were named receivers.

Pumpkin Patch owed its lender ANZ Bank New Zealand $59.5 million as of the date of receivership, the report says, up from $46 million at the year ended July 2016.

It posted a loss of $15.5 million in the same period.

The company has $17.6 mil-

lion in assets, with $13.5 million of that from investments, and $3 million in fixed assets relating to its head office and distribution centre in East Tamaki, Auckland.

The receivers said they will look to sell the fixed assets once they are no longer needed as part of the realisation strategy they’ve implemented, which involves selling through the existing retail and online channels. Inventory is owned by another company within the group, Pumpkin Patch Originals, which is also in receivership.

Pumpkin Patch has a number of creditors who have registered financing statements under a Purchase Money Security Interest (PMSI), which has priority over other security interests. The receivers said they’re in the process

of assessing claims from those creditors including ANZ, Cafe Express, Childs Play and Fuji Xerox.

An estimated $2.7 million is owed to employees under preferential claims, with 1,600 staff employed across the group, while Inland Revenue has not yet submitted a preferential claim. There are no floating charge assets the receivers expect to be realised to meet preferential claims.

Unsecured creditors are owed about $3.9 million, but it’s too early to say if there will be funds available to pay them, the receivers said.

The shares were suspended on October 26, having traded at 6 cents, valuing the retailer at $10.1 million.

Diplomatic relations soured over the Christmas holiday period after New Zealand co-sponsored a resolution in the United Nations Security Council criticising Israeli settlements as violating international law and undermining a two-state solution with Palestine.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered his foreign ministry to temporarily limit ties with the 12 UNSC members that voted in favour of the resolution, being Britain, France, Russia, China, Japan, Ukraine, Angola, Egypt, Uruguay, Spain, Senegal and New

“Other than the fact that the ambassador has been recalled and the fact that the New Zealand ambassador to Israel Jonathan Curr is not allowed for the moment to visit Israel, there are no further sanctions,” embassy spokeswoman Patricia Deen said.

“We’re just continuing with what we were doing, business as usual, and that’s really it at this moment.”

New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Murray McCully met with Netanyahu last month during a trip to the Middle East, where the Israeli PM stressed the need for direct negotiations with Palestinians to find a two-state solution.

The two nations signed a film co-production agreement this year, and are also on the verge of

signing an innovation agreement leading to joint research and development, which was pushed for

by New Zealand’s chief scientist Peter Gluckman. He was part of a New Zealand Innovation mission to Israel in June led by Spark chief executive Simon Moutter.

Embassy spokeswoman Deen said current initiatives are still going ahead, “particularly in regard to the business innovation agreement, so that’s all go.”

New Zealand exported $26.2 million of goods to Israel in the year ended June 30, and imported $115.5 million of goods.

Investment flows were much smaller, with just $1 million of New Zealand investment into Israel in the March year and $20 million of Israeli investment in New Zealand.

Teriyaki chicken with mushrooms and snow peas 75ml salt reduced Japanese soy sauce 100ml mirin 1/2 C salt-reduced chicken stock 1/4 C cornflour 600g Tegel Fresh Chicken Skinless Thighs, cut in half 2T oil 2 spring onions, chopped 200g button mushrooms, cut into quarters 100g snow peas, thinly sliced the chicken in batches and cook over medium-high heat until it is golden brown and cooked through. Keep warm.

■ Return the chicken back to the pan with the teriyaki sauce. Simmer for 2 to 3 minutes or until the sauce coats the chicken and the chicken is heated through.

■ Meanwhile, in another frying pan, heat a dash of oil. Add the spring onions and mushrooms

and stir-fry over medium-high heat for 2 to 3 minutes or until tender. Add the sliced snow peas and cook for a further minute.

■ Slice the chicken into thick strips before serving with the vegetables and rice. Garnish with the spring onions.

Farming in the proverbial fish-bowl

arming in the Omarama area these days is very much like farming in the proverbial fish-bowl.

The spotlight is on both the Upper Waitaki and neighbouring Mackenzie District with changing land-use, water quality and environmental issues to the fore.

Twenty years ago, Omarama barely registered on the map; rather it was “somewhere to drive through at high speed” to get to Wanaka or Queenstown, sheep and beef farmer Richard Subtil, from Omarama Station, said.

“Now, for all kinds of good reasons, it’s become a bit of a battleground and, somewhere in there, the balance of the discussion has been lost,” he said.

Mr Subtil is a member of the Upper Waitaki zone water management committee, set up by Environment Canterbury to help it manage water resources in the Waitaki catchment.

An urgent focus of the committee was to better communicate both the work of the committee and its results to the wider public, he said.

Concerns were raised in the national media recently about foam in the Omarama Stream and the deteriorating quality of the stream.

That was greeted with frustration by local farmers, who were not contacted for comment, and who wanted to outline the facts.

“What we’re clearly not doing well is to communicate the reality. We are looking to address that urgently because, in a small community, it’s not very helpful to have ill-informed and inaccurate information being put out there as if it’s fact,” Mr Subtil said.

Environment Canterbury had been monitoring the stream’s water quality since 2006 and its ecosystem health since 2002.

Recent information from the regional council said long-term data indicated there was no change in nitrate, suspended sediment or E. coli concentrations, and an improvement in phosphorus concentrations.

The Main Divide-fed Ahuriri River. cated fair to good water quality/ habitat quality, but no long-term trend, and there was a concerning trend of deteriorating water clarity. Occasional occurrences of foam in the stream could be expected at some times of the year.

Farmers in the area carried out water-quality testing of the Omarama Stream at their own expense and contributed data to ECan for analysis and creation of long-term trends, Mr Subtil said.

They were trying to identify any issues that needed improvement and research was planned into the increased turbidity.

Under a conservation order from the 1970s, it was a requirement to take water from the Ahuriri River and drop it into the Omarama Stream to achieve better outcomes for the fishery.

Being a Main Divide-fed river, the Ahuriri ran “milky” much more than an alpine stream, he said.

All the farmers in the area were very focused on having an environment they could be proud of, Mr Subtil said.

The community-based zone committee was one of 10 established throughout Canterbury under the Canterbury water management strategy.

It had a good cross-section of

people, including farmers, Fish and Game representatives, iwi and other community members, he said.

It was functional and constructive and had been very well led

by Barry Shepherd, who recently stepped down as chairman.

Simon Cameron, from Ben Ohau Station, had replaced him.

Since people started living in the area, the focus had been on production, but that was now changing to be more balanced.

“We’re confident with better knowledge and working together constructively with the likes of ECan and Fish and Game and anybody else who has a constructive role to play, we can achieve this,” he said.

The zone committee had completed a “shopping list” of environmental enhancement projects around the area, many of which had “flown below the radar”, he said.

“It’s right we are first cab off the rank – it gives us an opportunity to get ahead of the game. We want to take that opportunity and, as a group, we’re confident we can establish best practice and regimes that will give people confidence in what we are doing.

“We’re not being complacent but we are taking action as a

group. We hope that the community will work with us,” he said.

For more than a decade, he and his wife, Annabelle, had worked with local iwi and the Department of Conservation to promote the regeneration of the native longfin eel population.

Part of their property was now a scientific reserve for the protection of native eels.

During a field day last year, John Wilkie, of the eel recovery programme, said eels were probably one of the best environmental monitors, aside from water monitoring. If your eels were thriving, you had good water and it was great to have that extra level of monitoring, Mr Subtil said.

A December 2014 Fish and Game report on monitoring of the stream said the abundance of sports fish was high and, compared with the Mary Burn and the Maerewhenua River, which are regionally important trout fisheries, the Omarama Stream was “outstanding”.

There was also a very pragmatic side to the issue: with the advent of irrigation, properties in the area were employing people and generating income and business that supported the local economy, Mr Subtil said.

Dairy farmer Dave Ellis, whose land holding includes two properties at Omarama – Tara Hills and The Glens – also acknowledged his frustration.

“A lot of urban people don’t understand there’s a lot more behind us than just being cowboys on the land. There is a lot of science behind what we do.

“The frustrating part is a lot of urban people have a lot to say but don’t understand the science or haven’t seen it ... a lot of those sort of people have never stepped foot on a farm,” he said.

The work he was doing concerning water quality included everything from water testing and moisture metering for irrigation to proof of placement for fertiliser.

Every decision made took the environment into account, ensuring there was not a detrimental effect and he welcomed anyone to take a look at what was being done, Mr Ellis said.

“We’re all for the environment ... all trying to strive to keep water quality and doing everything right within our consent conditions,” he said.

He was originally drawn to invest in the Omarama area after seeing what pioneering dairy farmer Doug McIntyre had done, Mr Ellis said.

He had no regrets about the move as it was an ideal environment, but he agreed there should be no more dairying in the district. That was a message that had “certainly been sounded in the public arena”, he said.

Farmers were always open to suggestions as to what could be done to enhance the environment; everyone was “all in it together” with the common goal of keeping a great environment and that was as important as maintaining the country’s GDP, he said.

But there were some suggestions that horrified him, such as demands to paint centre-pivot irrigators or to put light shades on pivots.

“It’s just unreasonable. We’re sitting on our side of the fence looking at cars going past with their lights on. What’s the difference?”

‘Collaboration key to sustainable future’

Nuffield scholar Rebecca Hyde is aiming to simplify sustainability for Kiwi farmers and find ways to promote greater industry collaboration to benefit agriculture.

As one of six 2017 scholars, Hyde will attend a global workshop with scholars from around the world, observing the latest international agricultural developments across seven countries and have the opportunity to conduct her own research.

In this she wants to identify how collaboration within the agricultural industry can be improved to achieve better environmental outcomes for everyone.

“Agriculture runs in my veins and I want to make sure the industry is as sustainable as it can be,” she says.

“There is a huge amount of investment going into improving environmental outcomes right across New Zealand’s primary industries and cross-sector collaborative efforts will be a vital part of this.

“My aim is to shed some light on what good collaboration is, and the outcomes it delivers at a national, industry and on-farm level.

“The end goal is to achieve desired environmental outcomes that help to grow our markets and get high value for our products. It means greater value for our economy, our industry and our farmers.”

Having worked on her family’s sheep and beef farm, Hyde knows first-hand how stressful it can be for farmers to balance sustainability legislation requirements on top

of a busy workload.

She uses that insight on a daily basis, as South Island team leader for Ballance Agri-Nutrients’ farm sustainability services team to help farmers solve questions surrounding resource use and how best to comply with environmental regulations.

She says that the key is to relate the requirements to each particu-

As a certified nutrient management adviser and certified farm environment plan auditor, Hyde helps farmers and industry to make better on-farm decisions that have a positive impact on the environment while remaining financially viable.

Kiwi father-son trio 2nd Supermaxi Loyal has taken line honours in the Sydney to Hobart yacht race with a winning time almost five hours faster than the previous record.

Skippered by Anthony Bell, Loyal crossed the finish line around 2:30am yesterday to complete the 630 nautical mile race in 1 day, 13 hours, 31 minutes, 20 seconds.

That shattered the race record, set in 2012 by rival supermaxi Wild Oats XI, by 4:51:52.

A New Zealand father-andsons trio took out second place, finishing almost two hours behind winner Loyal, but still well ahead of the previous race record.

Owner and skipper Jim Delegat praised his sons Nikolas, 19, and James, 18, who were among the crew of 14.

“This type of yachting is a boyhood dream come true,” Jim said after pulling into Hobart’s Constitution Dock.

“(James is) quite an experienced sailor for his age and he’s fearless. They’re very fearless and talented young men.”

The senior Delegat, who’s found success in the global wine industry, said reading the weather when setting off from Sydney proved instrumental in the race result.

“The key really is we picked a good plan, a good strategy, we really thought about the weather and we looked at where we

had to be in the first 18 hours,” the skipper said.

Despite coming within eight nautical miles of Loyal, Jim said they were always out of reach.

“It was good to know we were in the play but I didn’t ever think we’d overhaul them.”

The boat finished in one day, 15 hours, 27 minutes and five seconds, just a couple of minutes ahead of third-placed Hong Kong supermaxi Scallywag.

Black Caps – keeping things in perspective T he relationship between the Black Caps and the New Zealand public is probably best described as tumultuous.

We love them, we hate them. They frustrate us and we probably frustrate them a little too.

They’ve taken us on some epic journeys and there’s been the odd trip where I’m sure we would wish we were rather left at home.

But despite the inconsistency and often soul-destroying performances we sometimes see, the Black Caps have this ability to encapsulate a fan and draw them back into their hold in one swift swoop.

Our visit by the Pakistan side to kick off the summer of cricket was, at best, a little flat-lined. There were some exciting aspects, but there were plenty of moments too where the wind was well and truly swept from the sails.

Then we went to Australia. Full of fire and brimstone but unfortunately

someone also decided to pack the fire extinguisher and we quickly came home feeling a little damp.

Now we are playing host to Bangladesh. The former whipping-boys of World Cricket who are making good movements when they play at home.

No longer are they considered to be the easy-beats. They have the ability to beat any time if the opportunity presents itself.

But generally it just comes when they are playing at home.

Here, in our conditions, they should struggle and the opening one day match

on Boxing Day showed that.

So the opportunity is now there for us Black Cap fans to build ourselves up again. Get all confident about life and start to feel like maybe we are headed back in the right direction.

That’s just how we operate. It’s an ebbs and flows situations. And we never seem to learn to keep things in check.

So, as you’re sitting back watching Trent Boult get one to move off the seam, or admiring Martin Guptil as he rocks on the back foot and sends one sailing over the square leg boundary during the next few weeks, try and keep things in perspective.

Enjoy the cricket, but don’t let yourself get built up into a world beating frenzy.

That way, if things don’t go the way we want them to then you won’t be as disappointed and frustrated and you might just remind yourself to enjoy cricket for the spectacle it is without all stress and anxiety.

Wouldn’t that be nice for a change.

He’s got a bit of distance to travel to get there, so John Morrison will be looking to make the most of it when he gets to Motukarara this afternoon.

The young Mid Canterbury horseman has been on the West Coast since Boxing Day plying his trade but will take a break from the Coast hospitality for a day to return to Canterbury for a decent looking book of drives at the Banks Peninsula meeting today.

His five drives all hail from the stable of Rakaia trainer Warren Stapleton – a big supporter of Morrison in his career. And all going to form the pair should enjoy a good day on the big grass track.

They might have to wait until the last race of the day to find their best chance though with the ever-consistent Leading The Way a great chance for them based on recent form.

In his second season of driving, Morrison is making a good impression and has currently driven three winners this season with the promise of plenty more during the summer months.

Rees family dominate 2016 Suzuki Series Tony Rees made a clean sweep in front of a massive crowd at Whanganui on Boxing Day where he took pole and won all three premier races including the Robert Holden Memorial race.

The Whakatane-based Honda Rider Insurance CBR1000RR rider had to work for his prizemoney in each F1 Superbike race after faststarting Taupo rider Scott Moir lead the hungry pack of superbike racers on his Suzuki GSXR1000 during the opening laps of all three races.

Riding better than ever, Rees enjoyed three wins from six starts on his way to securing his first Suzuki Series title. The other series race winners were defending champion Sloan Frost, at Taupo, and Horst Saiger who won both heats at Manfeild.

Going into Whanganui Sloan Frost was leading the Suzuki Series by nine points however a jump start in the opening race brought a 20 second penalty which dropped the disappointed Suzuki GSXR1000 rider down the finishing order, to ninth.

Daniel Mettam, of Auckland, was having the ride of his life when he passed Moir for second on lap three, however Liechtenstein racer Horst Saiger slotted his Kawasaki into second three laps later to make an exciting finishing order of Rees, Saiger, and a closefinishing Mettam, Moir and Toby Summers.

race win edged him closer to the title, although the result lifted Saiger into the Suzuki Series lead from Rees heading into the final race.

Once again Moir took the hole-shot although it wasn’t long before Rees muscled his way to the front and carried on for his second victory of the day – and the Suzuki Series win. Moir held onto the back of Rees throughout the race for second, and Frost won a tough race-long battle for third with Mettam, Summers and Saiger to cross the line in that order.

Northern Irishman Michael Dunlop persevered with ongoing mechanical issues with his bike throughout the day which meant the 13-time Isle of Man TT winner was unable to show his true potential at the Cemetery Circuit.

Saiger rode his best during the Robert Holden Memorial where he almost matched Rees in pace and made a last lap passing attempt which was aggressively held off by Rees, who later said he really wanted that win. The finishing order was Rees, Saiger, Moir, Summers and Jamie Maindonald.

Tony Rees’ win in the Robert Holden Memorial was his seventh feature race victory at Whanganui - 26 years after his first win in 1990. Stamping his authority at Whanganui he set a new outright lap record of 49.052 seconds, ending Andrew Stroud’s longterm record set in 2006.

Keeping the family trophy cabinet full, Tony Rees’ 21-yearold son, Damon Rees, won the F2 600 Suzuki Series on his Honda CBR600RR after finishing a steady third in both races. Wellington riders Shane Richardson and Jay Lawrence won a hectic race each, while a fast-riding David Hall crossed the line fourth in each leg, behind Damon Rees.

To win the title Damon Rees had to finish third in each race although, like his father, the youngest Rees also had to work to capture his first major championship. “I finished third in race one which was all I needed to do, but in the second race I

screwed up going into turn one and went off.” Rees explains. “I came back from last and I just got into third place on the very last lap! I was pretty wrecked by the end as I had to really bust it, but it was a pretty cool race as I had to work for it.”

Richardson finished a fighting second in the championship, ahead of improving 19-year-old Wellingtonian Rogan Chandler, a rider to watch for the future.

The expected title challenge between the John Holden/Robbie Shorter pair and the Barry Smith/ Tracey Bryan team for the F1 Sidecar races didn’t eventuate, and fans were disappointed after

five-time world sidecar champion Tim Reeves’ sidecar suffered a broken chassis after a few short laps around the gruelling street circuit during first practice. With no replacement parts available in New Zealand there was no possibility to repair the ‘chair’ which left UK-based Reeves and passenger Mark Wilkes as the most well-travelled spectators for the day.

The F1 Sidecar stars of the day turned out to be Adam Unsworth and Stu Dawe, who made a welcome Suzuki Series return on their sidecar to win both races after some close shaves with Holden and Shorter.

Sport Parker to call out winner Joseph Parker could be in attendance when IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua puts his title on the line against Wladimir Klitschko in London. Parker’s management said they are considering a massive unification fight against Joshua or Klitschko in London next August.

“Joe could be [at Joshua v Klitschko] to call out the winner for a megafight at Wembley in the late summer to unify the belts,” said Duco Events director David Higgins. “That’s what we want – to unify the belts and we are willing to lose trying.

Warner leads fightback Opener David Warner led an Australian fightback after lunch on day three of the Boxing Day Test yesterday.

After Azhar Ali’s outstanding 205no led Pakistan to 9 (dec)443, Australia made the most of improved conditions to reach 1-131 at tea.

Warner belted a boundary immediately before the break to reach 77no and Usman Kha-

waja had made 39, with the pair putting on 85 so far for the second wicket.

Opener Matt Renshaw tried a big hit off leg-spinner Yasir Shah and the straight ball bowled him for 10.

But otherwise Yasir, Pakistan’s ace in the pack, had struggled so far with 1-47 from seven overs.

Ana Ivanovic in doubt for ASB Classic Ana Ivanovic is in doubt for the 2017 ASB Classic.

The 29-year-old Serbian posted on social media that she will make a major announcement on Wednesday evening in England (this morning NZT).

It’s believed the former World No1 will confirm that she will be missing the Australasian swing, including the ASB Classic and the Australian Open.

The reasons are unknown

at this stage, though it could be related to injuries that have blighted her seasons over the past two years.

Her absence would be the second major setback for the Auckland tournament in a matter of days, after Juan Martin Del Potro’s injury-enforced withdrawal last Saturday.

Ivanovic has been a popular figure in Auckland.

The Breakers have confirmed their new import is 29-year-old American Paul Carter. Carter, who is 203cm, has been brought in as an injury replacement for Corey Webster but his role with the team is all the more important given the recent injury to Tom Abercrombie, with the swingman out for a further two to three weeks with a broken hand.
