Methven – the place Debb Methven Primary School teacher Debbie Lamont came to Methven for two years; 30plus years down the track she says Methven is her home for life. That life, however, will no longer include fulltime teaching.

She talks to reporter Sue Newman about working in a school that became her home away from home.

Ask Debbie Lamont how many years she’s spent teaching at Methven Primary School and she has to stop and think – is it 34 or is it 35?

Those years have flown by and there hasn’t been a single moment, she said, when she’s regretted moving to Methven or becoming part of the school staff.

Moving to Methven wasn’t a deliberate choice.

Then husband Peter Harper won a job at Mount Hutt College.

She was a trained primary teacher and the move to Methven was a short-term one, two years at most, until the right jobs came up in Christchurch.

“When we arrived I came to the school as a day-to-day reliever, then I became a long-term reliever and special-needs teacher and then a permanent position came up. And that’s me.”

Peter and Debbie arrived in Methven with two children, Rebecca and Simon, and happily settled into what was then smalltown Methven. The planned move to Christchurch simply never happened.

And why would you move, Debbie said, when you live in a community that is so supportive of its school.

“These are such well-rounded kiddies, they’re very receptive and most are willing to give most things a go. This is an awesome area and the community is amazing, so supportive.”

Over the years she’s taught all ages, but admits the juniors are where her heart is, give her years

1 to 3 and she couldn’t be happier.

Staying in one school for most of her teaching years was far from career limiting, Debbie said.

“I have been so privileged to have principals that have encouraged my professional development. I’ve never felt I stagnated in any one particular area, professional development kept me going, it kept me motivated.”

As a school, Methven has it all, she said.

“I’ve never thought of moving and changing schools, I love it here.”

The way education is delivered has changed over the years and Debbie is a strong supporter of hub or collective space teaching.

She is one of three teachers working together and said that beats, hands down, the old solo system with its standalone classrooms and solo teachers.

“This is a very good model, especially with the little ones,” she said.

For someone who was wrapping up almost 40 years in one career, it was a major change in thinking to be teaching children who would undergo many changes of career during their working lives, Debbie said.

“As primary school teachers we’re preparing children for jobs that don’t even exist.”

The fundamentals of teaching were still the same, it was just the methods that had changed to meet the needs of children for the future, she said.

Methven Primary has become something of a family affair, with daughter Rebecca, a physiotherapist, working at the school as a teacher aide and loving the job.

Over the years, Debbie has also taught two of her grandchildren and said she felt it was a real privilege to be part of their formal education.

She’s seeing growing numbers of children who are second generation students and said that’s pretty special for any teacher.

to you out of school to tell you what they were doing “It’s wonderful when you can still feel a part of their lives; it’s a privilege to have been involved in the lives of thousands of children.”

Methven Primary has grown significantly over her time, from six to 14 teachers.

And the roll has grown as well, with a particular bubble in student numbers after the Canterbury earthquakes.

“We had a big influx of students and we were very mindful of their needs. Some of those children were quite fragile, it was a traumatic time for them.”

Like anyone who had been in

one workplace for a long time, it was inevitable you made friends among your work colleagues, she said.

Looking back, Debbie said if she had to make a career choice again, it would still be teaching. She said she’s worked with some amazing staff and principals – including six of the latter.

“Yes, it’s challenging, but it’s so rewarding and it’s certainly not nine-to-three. And those holidays that people say they’re so envious of, oh my God ... you’re always thinking about work. It becomes your life, it’s not just a job. This has been a great career.”

Much as she’s loved life in the classroom, she understands why young people are not so keen to take it on as a career today. The workload is much, much greater today, classrooms have students with a wide range of needs – social, not just academic, and pay rates are poor compared to many other industries, she said.

When she started teaching, that was the job, now it’s a combination of teacher, social worker, needs assessor and a raft of other jobs.

“And so many parents are working, or more transient and that all brings issues into the classroom too. We do have support but we need more, it’s there, but just not enough of it.”

Debbie is not cutting ties completely with the school. She’s already put her hand up as a reliever for next year, but said relieving comes with the option of saying no.

“I’m 65 and it’s time. I’m looking forward to having time, time to do things like going to the hairdresser or the doctor without trying to fit it in around school. I’m looking forward to the clock not ruling my life so much.”

Spending more time with son Simon and his three children in Napier is high on her list and so is overseas travel.

“This has become my home away from home in many ways. It’s been such a huge privilege being able to live and work in the Methven community.”

Vandals gouge up carpark

The Hampstead Rugby and All Sports Club has been stripped of Christmas cheer after vandals damaged their newly-repaired carpark over Christmas.

The recent reseal job cost approximately $50,000 to complete and president Jim Henderson believes it was gouged up and damaged by Christmas Day revellers.

“It’s bloody annoying,” he said.

“We heard from a few people that there were people in the carpark on Christmas Day, but we don’t have a problem with that. We like to see people down there and view it as a bit of community area.

“Somebody went back on Boxing Day to drop some stuff off and noticed there was a big gouge out of the chip-seal a metre long, as well as other areas where cars have done donuts and ripped it up.”

The vandalism has forced the

club to put a chain and lock over the entrance to the club, something they had been debating for 12 months.

“We had been looking at it but it was something we really did not want to do as anybody who would want to use the grounds would have to get in touch with us and get the codes,” he said.

Henderson said one of the most disappointing things was the effect the situation would likely have on youth sport within the club.

“Every club has a number of kids involved of course, but when you have got to fork out to cover the costs of something like this, it is often them that are affected with not being able to afford gear or stuff like that,” he said.

It has been a testing period for the club over the past three months after the storage shed onsite was burgled three times, with thieves taking petrol from mowers and power tools.

■ NEW YEAR’S EVE

St John prepares for busiest night of the year St John is wishing everybody a very safe and enjoyable New Year, but are asking people to do so sensibly as they prepare for their busiest night of the year.

Calls to the ambulance service triple on New Year’s Eve and St John is all set to keep New Zealanders safe by planning extra resources for the big night, with over 105 additional frontline personnel and 80 additional response vehicles ready to attend to the public.

Call-outs peak between 10pm

and 2am, with the increase being predominantly alcohol-related.

St John director of clinical operations, Norma Lane, said St John is likely to respond to around 500 calls during this four-hour period, with many emergency call-outs being preventable.

“We ask people to drink sensibly and make sure everyone gets home safely. Don’t leave an intoxicated person on their own,” she said.

Year’s Eve are alcohol-related, with people passing out, assaults, traumatic injuries and motor vehicle crashes making up over 30 per cent of ambulance call-outs.

Lane advises people to plan how they will get home before heading out.

“Don’t drink and drive, make sure you have a sober driver and drink plenty of water.”

Tony Devanney, St John assistant director of operations, says having to deal with intoxicated

people can be difficult for frontline staff.

“Intoxication and substance misuse contributes hugely to falls, injuries and assaults.

“St John ambulance officers are caring and non-judgmental professionals who are there to help, but trying to treat someone vomiting over you, attacking you, or being so incoherent or unconscious that the patient can’t explain what is wrong, complicates treatment and is not ideal,” he said.

A clean windows wish

By HeatHer Mackenzie Noeline Thompson was looking forward to what was going to be an amazing and cool Christmas Day. “I’m looking forward to having 25 family members here for the big day, oh and Dodge the labrador who belongs to my daughter and her family. They are travelling down from Nelson and staying

with me for a few days – it’s all so exciting,’’ she said.

Noeline was thrilled about having her windows cleaned by Katelyn Hogg.

“She has done a great job. I can’t believe she brings all the stuff with her as well.”

“I have Christmas lights in the garden, they are going to look even more sparkly through my beautifully clean windows.”

“This is such a lovely service on several levels,” Noeline said.

“There are so many people out there that need little things done, family can all be a bit busy, so it’s great to have another port of call, I really appreciate it.”

She also pointed out that Christmas time can be a bit of a lonely time for some, so having a cheery xperson pop in, help out and have a chat is very welcome.

New digital scams a worrying trend Authorities have issued an urgent warning for Kiwis and Australians to be on the lookout for savvy scammers who assume the digital identities of loved ones.

It follows a recent surge in dodgy text messages and phone calls that have swindled people out of potentially millions of dollars.

The latest tactic by online criminals has seen people received messages on Facebook from friends or family members asking for cash.

In some cases, victims are told about a competition or easy to obtain government grant that requires a nominal payment for shipping or tax.

"Because the message is from someone you know the scammers hope you'll trust what they're telling you," a police spokesman said.

"The message is really from a scammer who has either hacked your friend's account or created a copy profile by stealing their images and information."

It comes a week after fresh warnings were issued over a text message purporting to be from Qantas, telling recipients they had won a "mystery box" competition.

Scammers have spoofed the SMS domain of the airline to

make the message appear genuine, and it lobs alongside previously sent aboveboard communications from the company.

"You've won our mystery box this week," the message reads.

"Please use this link to schedule the delivery."

Qantas said it is aware of the scam texts and has urged its customers not to follow the URL. "These messages are not genuine and encourage customers

to click on a link which requests personal information," the airline said.

"Unfortunately scammers can change sender ID names, which makes it confusing for the recipient to recognise when a legitimate message has been sent and when it is a scam.

"These messages – because of the sender ID name – can then be grouped with genuine messages with Qantas."

A number of people have also been stung by a telephone scam where criminals claim to be from the Australian Taxation Office and make a number of alarming threats.

In voicemails left by the callers, a robotic-sounding voice warns the recipient that they are the subject of a lawsuit and should return the call immediately.

If they don't, a warrant will be issued for their arrest, the mes-

sage threatens.

It's the latest iteration of a wellworn scam which demands payment of a tax debt – and it has fleeced unsuspecting and terrified victims out of thousands of dollars each.

The ATO has received 28,000 reports about attempted scams since July 1, with the lawsuit-related telephone call among them, and Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said fraudsters are growing increasingly sophisticated and hope to exploit vulnerable people.

"Be wary if someone contacts you demanding payment of a tax debt you didn't know you owed," Ms Anderson said.

Cyber crime detectives have also identified a spike in the number of threatening emails received by people across the country.

The messages contain terrifying threats designed to frighten people into handing over their money.

The extortion emails demand payment to bitcoin accounts.

The emails have been linked to similar campaigns around the world using sextortion, bomb hoaxes, fake hitman emails and more recently, acid attack threats.

In 2017, Australians lost an estimated $A340 million to cyber crime activities – the highest amount on record.

Stopping death in its tracks Drive an hour north of Google’s headquarters up to Oyster Point, south San Francisco, and you will find the office of Calico Labs.

The steel-and-glass building has none of the showmanship of its sister company’s colourful campus.

Its name is an acronym for California Life Company but its lifeless exterior makes it easy to imagine it being named after another Calico – an abandoned mining town further down the Pacific Coast.

The company, a division of Google’s parent company Alphabet, is five years old, but its operations remain highly secretive.

Calico was the brainchild of Art Levinson, a biotech entrepreneur and former CEO of Silicon Valley pharmaceutical Genentech, which developed several successful cancer treatments.

He counted Steve Jobs and the early Silicon Valley pack as friends, and happens to be Apple’s chairman.

In the early Noughties, Levinson convinced Google co-founder Larry Page to open a company

with a blank chequebook and little pressure to return profit.

This company would have one mission: achieve immortality.

On September 18 2013, Larry Page wrote to shareholders alerting them that Google had formed a new company focused on “health and well-being [and] the challenge of ageing”.

Apple’s chief Tim Cook congratulated Art at the time, describing him as “one of the crazy ones”, due to his fearless commitment to suspending old age when others scoffed.

Anti-ageing has long been regarded as marketing nonsense,

a preserve for cosmetic companies keen to convince women to buy moisturisers. The cosmetic anti-ageing market was worth $US250 billion in 2016 and expected to reach $331.41b by 2021.

How much could a pill that could stop death in its tracks be worth?

Scientists are coming around to the notion that age can be treated like a disease, rather than an inevitability, and some have suggested we may be able to find a way to switch it off.

Calico was one of the first to jump on a trend that has piqued the interest of the venture capital-

ies and research tie-ups.

Last January, it demonstrated that naked mole rats are not more likely to die as they get older.

The bucktoothed mammals are notable for their long lifespans and the research appeared to back up Calico’s goal. But no therapies have emerged.

The company has hit some dead ends. In July 2015 Calico signed up to work with AncestryDNA, which makes DNA-testing kits used by millions.

Calico paid for access to pick out families that appeared to live longer, and work out why, but the partnership has ended.

Notoriously closed to outsiders, even workers in the Bay Area’s blossoming biotech industry have little idea what its team are up to.

At the same time, other Google spin-offs such as driverless car company Waymo and balloon-internet project Loon are bearing fruit.

Calico’s ambition has always been to make people live forever.

Questions about the company’s own lifespan remain unanswered.

But scientists have suggested wilder things that turned out to be true.

Before Louis Pasteur’s germ theory became popular in the 1880s we believed death by disease was bad luck. The discovery of penicillin in 1928 changed that.

So why not imagine a time when we could stop the grip of ageing, offering a better quality of life and relieving pressure on healthcare services?

Since Calico opened its doors five years ago, we have heard little.

Huge rise in net profit The Sealord Group lifted annual net profit 31 per cent after it shed a loss-making venture and as earnings from continuing operations climbed 11.4 per cent.

New Zealand’s second-largest fishing company reported a $24.3 million net profit for the year ended September, up from $18.5m the previous year.

The year-earlier result for Sealord, which is halfand-half owned by iwi vehicle Moana New Zealand and Japan-based Nippon Suisan Kaisha, or Nissui, had been dragged down by a $3.2m net loss from its British-based Sealord Caistor processing business that it sold to Nissui from April 1 last year.

Excluding that loss, Sealord’s result was 11.4 per cent higher than in the previous year.

Another factor in the improved profit was a 2.7 per cent fall in administrative expenses.

Moana says in a statement that Sealord lifted “operational performances both at sea and onshore processing despite facing strong headwinds as well as in-market activation” and has yet to respond to BusinessDesk queries about those headwinds or what “in-market activation” is.

Moana itself reported an 11 per cent increase in net profit to $21.4 million for the year ended September 30.

“The year has not been without its challenges, with further cuts to the total allowable commercial catches of fin fish and wild paua, high mortalities in the Blue Abalone farm through high water temperature as well as a tough year on sales,” Moana says.

Sanford, New Zealand’s largest fishing company, also reported on negative impacts on both fin fish and aquaculture of abnormally high summer water temperatures as did New Zealand King Salmon at its farms in the Marlborough Sounds.

“However, Moana New Zealand Pacific Oysters had a particularly good year as overseas customers recognise the high quality of Moana New Zealand’s oysters and are enjoying the benefits and consistency of year-round supply made possible through its hatchery farming practices,” the company said this week.

Moana says it has declared an $8.6m dividend which its 58 iwi will share in respectively.

Saudi king reshuffles cabinet Saudi Arabia’s King Salman has issued a wide-ranging overhaul of top government posts, including naming a new foreign minister, following international fallout from the killing of Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi nearly three months ago.

He also ordered a shake-up of the kingdom’s two supreme councils that oversee matters related to the economy and security, respectively.

Both councils are headed by the king’s son, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, whose powers, including roles as deputy prime minister and defence minister, were untouched in the overhaul.

The changes appear to further consolidate the crown prince’s grip on power by appointing advisers and members of the royal family seen as close to him.

Adel al-Jubeir, the soft-spoken foreign minister, was replaced by Ibrahim al-Assaf, formerly a longtime finance minister. Al-Jubeir was appointed to the rank of minister of state for foreign affairs.

The changes, which impact several key ministries, come as the king and his son, the crown prince, were looking to announce a major reshuffle following Khashoggi’s killing by Saudi agents in Istanbul.

The king issued a number of

other royal decrees, which were read on state TV, that replaced the ministers of media and education.

One significant change impacts a close aide of the crown prince, Turki al- Sheikh, who was named as head of the kingdom’s General

Entertainment Authority, a body created in recent years to help organise and promote concerts and other events that had long been banned in the conservative country.

Al-Sheikh’s appointment as head of entertainment means he no longer oversees a cybersecurity and programming body that was led by Saud al-Qahtani, a close aid to the crown prince who was fired from his post and sanctioned by the US Treasury Department for helping to mastermind the plot in Istanbul that led to Khashoggi’s killing.

Khashoggi, a critic of the crown prince, was killed and dismembered by a team of Saudi agents in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2.

Saudi Arabia denies the crown prince knew of the plot.

His critics point to US intelligence reports and say an operation like this could not have happened without his knowledge.

Cracked Opal Tower residents move out Residents of a Sydney apartment tower that began cracking on Christmas Eve will spend at least another 10 days away from home as engineers work to survey the building.

The Sydney Olympic Park building experienced a concrete panel collapse on Monday which triggered the evacuation of the tower and the surrounding areas.

While most residents were allowed back into the building within 24 hours, on Thursday the construction company responsible for the building called for it to be emptied.

Julian Doyle, the NSW director of building company Icon, said the building was not at risk of collapsing, but the fastest way

for the issue to be dealt with was to remove all residents from the tower.

“I think ultimately the build

ing will be as it was designed to be,” he said.

An angry resident confronted Doyle during his press conference at the base of the tower, demanding better temporary accommodation and a clearer timeline of when they would be allowed back home.

Doyle could not guarantee residents would be able to move back in after 10 days.

Iraqi lawmakers demand US withdrawal Iraqi lawmakers have demanded US forces leave the country following a surprise visit by President Donald Trump that politicians denounced as arrogant and a violation of Iraqi sovereignty.

Politicians from both blocs of Iraq’s divided parliament called for a vote to expel US troops and promised to schedule an extraordinary session to debate the matter.

“Parliament must clearly and urgently express its view about the ongoing American violations of Iraqi sovereignty,” said Salam al-Shimiri, a lawmaker loyal to the populist cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.

Trump, making his first presidential visit to troops in a troubled region mid-week, said he has

no plans to withdraw the 5200 US forces in the country.

Containing foreign influence has become a hot-button issue in a year that saw al-Sadr supporters win the largest share of votes in May elections. Al-Sadr has called for curbing US and Iranian involvement in Iraqi affairs.

US troops are stationed in Iraq as part of the coalition against the Islamic State group. American forces withdrew in 2011 after invading in 2003 but returned in 2014 at the invitation of the Iraqi government to help fight the jihadist group.

But after defeating IS militants in their last urban bastions last year, Iraqi politicians and militia leaders are speaking out against

the continued presence of US forces in Iraqi soil.

Qais Khazali, the head of the Iran-backed Asaib Ahl al-Haq militia that fought key battles against IS in north Iraq, promised on Twitter that parliament would vote to expel US forces from Iraq, or the militia and others would force them out by “other means”.

Khazali was jailed by British and US forces from 2007 to 2010 for managing sections of the Shi’ite insurgency against the occupation during those years.

His militia is represented in parliament by the Binaa bloc, a rival coalition to al-Sadr’s Islah. Binaa favours close ties with Iran and is aligned with Tehran on regional political issues.

Trump spent three hours at a US air base meeting with American troops during his visit. The president defended his decision to withdraw 2000 US forces from neighbouring Syria, saying the US military had all but eliminated IS-controlled territory there.

He left without meeting any Iraqi officials, though he spoke to Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi by phone.

The prime minister’s office said in a statement after Trump’s visit that “differences in points of view” over arrangements led to a faceto-face meeting between the two leaders to be scrapped.

Al-Shimiri said Trump’s visit “violated several diplomatic norms”.

In brief Migrants detained British officials say nine migrants have been detained on a beach in southeastern England after crossing the English Channel in a small inflatable boat. The Home Office said the group comprised five men, one woman, two boys and a girl. They were intercepted in the English coastal county of Kent by the local lifeboat station.

Manager Matt Crittenden said the inflatable had a very small 10-horsepower engine. This latest attempt to enter England comes after at least 43 migrants, tried to cross the English Channel on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. There has been a surge in small boat crossings recently.

Quake rattles Venezuela A strong earthquake jolted Venezuelans from their sleep, forcing residents in the capital to evacuate buildings in their pyjamas before sunrise. There were no immediate reports of casualties. The 5.5 magnitude quake struck just before 5am local time on Thursday and was centred near the town of San Diego, 165 kilometres west of Caracas, the capital. It was felt across seven states. Photos on social media showed large cracks to some buildings and fallen debris from historic facades in San Diego.

The quake follows a magnitude 7.3 earthquake in August that rattled residents across Venezuela and was felt in neighbouring Colombia and Guyana.

UK tourists killed A jeep carrying seven British tourists crashed while crossing a high bridge in Iceland, killing three and critically injuring the others. A child was among the dead and two among the injured, Icelandic police said. The accident occurred around 9.30am the vehicle slammed through a railing on a one-lane bridge at Skeidararsandur, a vast sand plain in southern Iceland. The car landed on a rocky river bank. Tour guide Adolf Erlingsson was among the first on the scene. “It was horrible,” he told The Associated Press. “The car seemed to have hit the ground many metres from where it stopped. We struggled getting everyone out.” Police said it remained unclear what caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

Boy survives avalanche A 12-year-old boy has been found alive after being buried under an avalanche for 40 minutes in the French Alps. Police in the French town of Bourg Saint-Maurice say the boy was skiing off-piste at the La Plagne ski resort with a group of seven skiers when he was swept away by a huge mass of snow. Rescue workers flew by helicopter to the avalanche scene, which was 2400 metres up the mountain. A sniffer dog found the boy, whose snowsuit was not equipped with an avalanche detector. Rescue workers described the operation as “miraculous” because the chances of survival are minuscule after 15 minutes under the snow. The boy escaped unscathed, and was sent to a local hospital for a check-up.

Volcano danger zone wider Indonesia has raised the danger level for an island volcano that triggered a tsunami last weekend, killing at least 430 people in Sumatra and Java, and widened its no-go zone.

The country’s volcanology agency increased the Anak Krakatau volcano’s alert status to the second-highest and more than doubled the exclusion zone to a five kilometre radius.

The eruption last weekend evening caused part of the island in the Sunda Strait to collapse into the sea, apparently generating tsunami waves of more than 2 metres. Most tsunamis are caused by earthquakes.

The government has warned communities in the strait to stay a kilometre away from the coastline because of the risk of another tsunami triggered by Anak Krakatau eruptions.

A navy vessel was expected to pass by the island, which could give scientists more information about the risks of a second collapse.

Since the show was first broadcast in China in 2015, children there have fallen in love with the tales of the young pig and her animal friends. And Peppa Pig, which is owned by eOne, has become a top brand in China for girls and boys. The success has led to Tmall declaring it a “super brand” and the sky-rocketing popularity is likely to continue in 2019 when China celebrates the Year of the Pig. Indonesia’s tsunami warning system relies on land seismometers and buoys connected to tidal gauges and is not equipped to detect underwater landslides. The system, in any case, has not operated for years

because the buoys have been vandalised or not maintained because of low funding.

Radar images from a Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency satellite taken before and after the eruption show the volcano’s southwestern flank has disappeared.

Philippines braces for bad weather Philippine authorities have warned of flash floods and landslides in eastern provinces ahead of a tropical depression expected to bring heavy rains before the New Year holiday.

The tropical depression, locally named Usman, may intensify into a storm before making landfall over Eastern Samar province, 595 kilometres south-east of Manila, the weather bureau said.

Some 13,000 passengers

have been stranded in seaports across the country as the coast guard suspended ferry services due to bad weather.

Usman was packing maximum sustained winds of 55km/h and gusts of up to 65km/h.

It was moving west-northwest at 10km/h and was expected to make landfall late on Friday.

The weather bureau raised storm warnings over more than 20 other provinces due to

Anger in Congo at voting exclusions Security forces in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo have fired live rounds and tear gas to scatter demonstrators who burned tyres and ransacked an Ebola centre in protest at their exclusion from the presidential election.

The electoral commission (CENI) announced on Wednesday that it was cancelling voting in Sunday’s election in the opposition strongholds of Beni, Butembo and their surrounding areas because of an ongoing Ebola outbreak and militia violence.

But health authorities have repeatedly said the outbreak would not prevent the vote from going ahead, and locals say it is being used as a pretext to disenfranchise them.

Nun art historian dies Sister Wendy Beckett, a British art historian and critic who rose to prominence on TV late in life, has died.

She was 88. The Carmelite Monastery of Quidenham said Beckett died at the monastery. She was a sister of the Catholic Church who became prominent in the 1990s presenting BBC shows about art history. Her work included a series of well received documentaries including Sister Wendy’s Odyssey and Sister Wendy’s Grand Tour. The BBC said it commissioned Beckett in 1991 to host a TV documentary on the National Gallery in London. She stood in front of the paintings dressed in a black nun’s habit and discussed the paintings without a script or teleprompter.

Frenchman to attempt Atlantic crossing in a barrel A French pensioner has set out to cross the Atlantic inside a large barrel he has built from reinforced plywood, hoping to arrive on a Caribbean island within three months using only ocean currents to carry him along.

“The weather is great – I’ve got a swell of one metre and I’m moving at two or three kilometres an hour,” JeanJacques Savin said shortly after leaving shore.

“For the time being my capsule is behaving very, very well and I’ve got favourable winds

forecast until Sunday,” he added in a phone interview.

The three-metre long orange barrel that will be home to the 71-year old former parachutist for the coming weeks has a six-square-metre living space that includes a kitchen, sleeping bunk, chart table, and storage.

Savin built the vessel, which looks like a space capsule, himself over several months in a small boatyard in Alès in the Arcachon basin in southwestern France.

Chris Brown charged US singer Chris Brown has been charged with monkey-related misdemeanours.

The Los Angeles city attorney’s office confirmed that the 29-year-old was charged last week with two counts stemming from his possession of a pet capuchin monkey without a permit.

Brown posted a picture to his 44 million Instagram followers in January showing his three-year-old daughter, Royalty, cuddling with the monkey, named Fiji.

California fish and wildlife agents took the monkey away soon after. Brown is scheduled to be arraigned in February. An after-hours email seeking comment from his lawyer was not immediately returned.

that was It’s been a mixed bag of action and inaction over the past 12 months for the Ashburton District’s councillors and mayor.

The year has largely been one where projects already on the drawing board have made some progress, but where few new ones have raised their heads.

A local authority is a big and cumbersome beast. It’s run on two levels – elected members who’re there to govern and set direction and those who’re paid a wage to make it happen.

When it’s running well they’re all in sync, but when it’s not there are times when the right hand and the left hand act independently.

It’s been a bit of both over the past year – good stuff, bad stuff and a lot of stuff that sits in the middle.

With elections looming in October, the mayor and councillors will be hoping to get some personal runs on the board early in the year as they vie for votes.

However, unless there’s more discussion on meaty issues held in open meetings rather than behind closed doors, as voters, we might not know who the movers and shakers are and who’s just standing still.

Reporter Sue Newman takes a look at the year that was.

The big stuff Long-term plan – sounds boring, but it’s not. The LTP, as it’s known, spells out how the council plans to spend rates money over the coming 10 years, the big ticket items that will make the cut and the ones that have to be canned. It’s always a document of winners and losers and its preparation involves an inordinate amount of staff time.

As sure as the sun rises and sets, rates go up each year. It’s just a question of how much, but this year ratepayers have got off lightly, just 4.5 per cent. And a lot of credit for that has to be given to previous council teams who’ve been prudent investors and wise spenders.

The LTP’s a real balancing act – be too frugal and the district will go nowhere; spend too lavishly and you’ll be drowning in debt. Seems we’ve got it about right.

Brownie points all round, but the acid test will come in the years ahead when the projects that have been pushed out rise to the top of the pile.

Civic centre and library Finally, finally, finally, we’re making progress. The project is moving ahead, architects have been appointed, a project manager has been appointed and, as the year winds down, plans are coming together in what will be a signature build for the district, one that will have to be fit for purpose for decades to come.

The community is waiting with bated breath to see what we’re likely to get. To date all discussion has been behind closed doors.

Yes, there’s plenty of commercial sensitivity involved, but a project of this scale that involves eyewatering amounts of ratepayer money should be debated in public. We want to know what each councillor thinks, not what they collectively decide when the discussion’s over. Sounds like that might happen early in the new year.

There is only one fear with this project and it’s that our councillors will not be sufficiently visionary.

The project they’re signing off on needs to be a community facility that’s built for the future. There are plenty of examples of great libraries in particular around the world. Libraries that are much, much more.

Have our councillors got the courage to take the world’s best on board?

I-SITE The closure of Ashburton’s i-SITE coloured the end of 2017. It’s continued to colour 2018. The doors remained closed, plenty of people were unhappy and the council appeared to be unsure of what to do with a building that had been consented for just one purpose – handing out information.

Well into the year a group of locals came up with a proposal that would see the centre reopened and its original function as an infor-

mation base restored with the addition of some other communitytype functions. They were firing on all cylinders, they knew they were on to a winner, they had a team of employees ready and all they needed was a nod from the council.

Seemed to make a lot of sense, wins all round, but they made a bid in October and by the end of the year nothing had happened.

As the year ended, the last word from the council was that it was working towards a positive resolution with this group, but it’s also saying there’s more than one proposal on the table.

Bottom line, the building is still shut. No matter how good your project, enthusiasm only lasts for so long. Let’s hope this group with the will to make it happen gets the chance to make it happen.

St John Just how much we value this community organisation was confirmed when St John asked the council for access over a piece of land and our councillors said no.

There was community outrage that left councillors scrambling for a solution that might undo the damage.

The land access issue also divided councillors with some wanting the council to gift the land. Unfortunately the issue became bogged down in one simple word – process.

It’s a word council staff, councillors and, in particular, Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel love. Nothing in local government happens without going through a process of some kind. There’s nothing that’s spontaneous, nothing that moves quickly.

There’s always a process that must be worked through.

When St John’s request for guaranteed access to the rear of their building was turned down, they suggested they could buy the entire council-owned section. The word process then came into play.

Complex, complicated and involved processes had to be worked through.

All of that angst could have been avoided if, instead of saying an outright no, councillors had said “let’s see what we can do”.

Instead, they said no, earned the ire of the community, got egg on their faces when they overturned that decision and possibly lost themselves votes in next year’s election.

Town centre Another in the tick box is Ashburton’s town centre redevelopment.

The council has been beavering away with consultants and planners to come up with a concept that would win the hearts of ratepayers.

They’ve done that. The plan has been out for public consultation and comment. It’s been accepted

and it’s been signed off.

Now it just needs to happen. The only question mark over the project is around time – how long until work gets under way. The success of this project will be measured not in what happens, but how soon.

The council’s plan is an integral part of the overall revitalisation of Ashburton’s town centre. Right now it’s a woeful place. We live here. We’re used to it, but what do visitors think?

Private investors are doing their level best to get projects started and, in some instances, the council is hampered by their progress.

Somehow, something has to happen and soon, or as a town we’ll start dying from the centre out.

How many councillors are too many councillors?

No denying, it must be a bit uncomfortable if you’re one of a team of 12 and you are asked to vote three of your number out of a job.

It’s a job councillors across the country are required to do every six years. Ours did their review this year and most opted to go for the cut. A couple didn’t. They reckoned cutting numbers would affect representation. The outcome is now in the hands of the Local Government Commission.

It’s a punt either way. You can have 12 elected members, but just a few who actually do the job while the rest sit back or never quite step up to the plate or, in an ideal world, you could have nine top class councillors who they all pull their weight.

It’s a gamble either way – cut to nine, end up with a several who don’t quite cut it, and we’re in trouble, or stay with a team of 12 where half could be passengers.

The success or otherwise of reduced councillor numbers will be squarely in the hands of the community. We’ll need good, strong, motivated people who’re standing for all the right reasons to put their names in the hat and we’ll

how much is too much?

We’re looking at local body elections in 2019 and if we’re to vote with a full pack of information on board then we need to know how our councillors are performing, not just in open meetings when decisions have been all-but made, but we want to know who said what and why and how they arrived at those decisions.

Unfortunately we often only get half the picture, the end result. We want to know what our councillors actually think, not just the party line.

We’re looking at an election in 2019 and we need to know who should get the tick and who should not.

need electors who’ll vote with their heads not their hearts next time round.

Chinese village Ratepayers could be forgiven for thinking the council had been handed a lemon when it offered to become custodian, caretaker and restorer of Ashburton’s Allen’s road Chinese settlement. And for a long time it looked as though that could be correct.

Plans for restoration were drawn up, but councillors choked on the cost of that work and quickly backtracked to a point where a more modest plan was developed.

Enter Historic Places New Zealand. They saw value where many could not. The settlement is the best of its kind in New Zealand and that has earned it recognition as an historic site worth preserving. That in turn means new funding sources will open up and, for the council and ratepayers, that means collective sighs of relief.

Work has already started on demolishing some buildings and making others safe. Restoration work will come later.

The council, however, will still

be left with large areas of grass to mow and the settlement itself will continue to need work. Perhaps it’s time to look at modifying the caretaker agreement and at selling off some of the surrounding land for housing. A debate for the next council team perhaps.

Art Gallery and Heritage Centre bomb Pity our current council team.

They’ve been landed with an expensive bomb. The art gallery and heritage centre were in business before they were elected and on the surface what we’ve got is great.

Look behind the walls, however, and it’s nothing short of a disaster.

The building has been cursed from its inception, from the commissioning of the architects through to constant plan amendments and cost cutting.

What was done or not done in the past has come back to haunt the council today and, finally, they’re trying for a permanent fix. It’s a fix that will involve High Court action, big costs for ratepayers and, if things pan out as they should, there’ll be some people held to account and some pretty decent

compensation paid.

The other stuff Change at the top For council staff in particular 2018 was a year of change. Chief executive Andrew Dalziel did not win his job back when his renewal option came up. Overnight he was gone and the top chair was vacant for several months until the Canterbury Crusaders’ boss Hamish Riach arrived. Different man, different style, but staff seem to be smiling.

The climate change division Some believe in it, others don’t and few want to spend any money on planning for an unknown future where a changing climate could dramatically change the Ashburton District.

Nothing wrong with not running with the crowd, but we can’t put our heads in the sand, we need to come up with our own plan. A job to complete in 2019.

In-committee discussion Yes, it’s necessary that some stuff goes on behind closed doors, but

There were battles over increased fees for stadium users, a big push to extend the pool area, plans for a climbing wall and ongoing debate over the development of the new greenfields area.

And there were wins and losses.

The additional pool complex is on the to-do list a couple of years out, the climbing wall didn’t make the cut and the greenfields, if they’re to be a goer, then users need to cough up some of the cash.

Ashburton River second bridge The council has played tough on this one, putting a stake in the ground and deciding it won’t be paying any more than 20 per cent of the costs.

The government will have to cough up the rest. Let’s see how that plays out. However, there’s a glimmer of hope with an application lodged for money from the new Provincial Fund. Application lodged, outcome awaited.

The year ahead It could come down to just two things in 2019 – money and electioneering. How much of an appe-

tite will councillors have to spend from the public purse for projects already committed and how much will their desire to win another year around the district council meeting table colour what they do and say.

Will 2019 be the year of populist voting among our local body politicians?

The civic centre and library build is likely to create a conundrum for councillors. They can stick with the the budget and give us a halfway project or they can go for a complex that will become the district’s heart and blow that budget. What to do?

And there’s that bogey of the art gallery and museum. While in an ideal world the costs for making good this building will be recovered from the parties involved in its design, construction etc, getting to that point might be a long, expensive and fraught road.

If councillors opt for a fix today and a claw-back tomorrow, then someone will have to foot what’s likely to be a substantial bill, and that someone will most likely be ratepayers.

And then there’s the emotional projects that nip around the edges. Not least of these will be the demolition of the old county building. There’s a groundswell of community feeling that this should be saved and included in the new civic complex and library. No-one’s got the answers on that one, but it’s difficult to imagine that the day the bulldozers roll on site there won’t be a protestor or two on hand.

And then there’s the election. The year will be a tense one for the 13 people we elected in October 2016.

They’ll need to be on their mettle every time they’re in the public eye.

Filling a seat and nodding occasionally won’t cut it with voters, but doing your homework, speaking out, challenging the status quo, and not being afraid to state an opinion just might be the key to staking a claim to another term around the council table.

A well-deserved retirement T

he art of teaching may have changed over the past few decades, but the basic necessities of the role are exactly the same as they’ve always been and that’s to have a passion for nurturing young minds and helping them to grow as they learn.

It takes a special sort of teacher to be able to leave an everlasting imprint on a young mind, but there are plenty of examples of such teachers out there in the community.

They’re the teachers who will quite happily stop in the street and have a chat with you about how life is going 20 years after

they had you in their classroom.

They are the teachers who take an interest in your children’s lives from the outset and it is even better if they get to teach them too.

As a Methven Primary School graduate two decades ago, I was lucky to have a few teachers of that ilk.

None more so though than

Debbie Lamont – or Mrs Harper as she was when I was in the junior school.

Mrs Lamont was the epitome of the awesome teacher; kind, caring, firm but compassionate and with a really strong desire to see every child who walked into her classroom succeed in life.

Many of my friends, who went through the school around the same time as I did, still talk about her influence as a teacher despite the fact we were very young.

Many remember the fun times, but equally, the sad times because the hugs from Mrs Harper when you were sad were about

as good as the hugs your mum could give.

This year she has retired after 30-plus years of service to the Methven community as a teacher at Methven Primary School.

A truly wonderful achievement.

I find it particularly nostalgic that, in her final year of teaching, one of her pupils was my son Isaac and I’m grateful that he got the chance to learn and grow under her tutelage this year.

That Mrs Lamont was able to teach multiple generations during her career at the one school is a true testament to her abilities in the classroom and says a lot

about her as a person.

There are hundreds of examples around New Zealand of teachers who have achieved what she has, perhaps some who have achieved even more, but when the opportunity came up to pen a few words about one of my most favourite teachers ever, the opportunity was too good to pass up.

So, Mrs Lamont/Mrs Harper/ Debbie – on behalf of myself, anyone else who’s been lucky enough to have you as a teacher and the community, thank you for all your hard work.

Enjoy retirement, it’s more than well deserved.

Lamb steaks with mushroom stuffing, wok vegetables and green tea noodles Serves 4 Lamb 4 Quality Mark lamb steaks Mushroom stuffing 1 shallot or small onion, very finely chopped 250g button mushrooms, wiped and finely chopped 1/2 C canned chopped tomatoes 1t finely chopped fresh thyme (or 1/2 t dried) Sesame dressing 2T tahini 1T dijon mustard 2T light soy sauce 1 1/2 T sesame oil 1T rice wine vinegar 2T orange juice 2T water 1T sugar Wok vegetables 250g button mushrooms, wiped and quartered if large 250g broccoli 1/2 C chicken stock 250g snow peas, trimmed To serve 200-250g green tea noodles, cooked (or use buckwheat or egg noodles) ■ Mushroom filling: Heat a dash of oil in a frying pan over a medium heat. Add shallot and stir continuously, until the shallot begins to turn golden. Add the mushrooms, tomatoes and thyme. Season and cook over a medium-high heat, stirring until all the moisture has evaporated (about 5 minutes). Set aside and leave to cool completely.

■ Sesame dressing: Place all ingredients in a blender or put in a jar

and shake until well incorporated.

Season to taste.

■ Lamb: Place lamb steaks on a chopping board. Using a large sharp knife, cut through each lamb steak horizontally (stopping just before you cut right through), and open out (as if you were reading a book).

Cover the opened out lamb steaks with plastic wrap or baking paper.

Using a meat mallet, rolling pin or the base of a small heavy saucepan, pound each lamb steak until it’s about 5mm thick. Spread cooled mushroom filling over one side of each lamb steak then fold back over and secure with a toothpick.

Rub lamb steaks with a little oil.

Heat a large frying pan over a medium-high heat. Cook lamb steaks for 3 minutes each side, turning once for medium-rare lamb. Remove and place on a warm plate, cover very loosely with foil and leave to rest while you cook the vegetables.

■ Wok vegetables: Heat a dash of oil in a wok or large frying pan with lid. Add the mushrooms and cook until just beginning to soften and colour. Add broccoli and stock, place on the lid and allow broccoli to steam, about 1-2 minutes. Remove lid, add snow peas and stir vegetables.

■ To serve: Divide cooked noodles and wok vegetables between 4 plates and place on a lamb steak.

Drizzle over a little of the sesame dressing and serve. Serve extra sesame dressing separately.

Hopman on shaky ground

Eugenie Bouchard will be one of the star attractions at the 2019 ASB Classic in Auckland.

Sparking a career revival Eugenie Bouchard admits she has struggled with her motivation for tennis over the last two years, as she has tried to get her career back on track.

The former Wimbledon finalist arrived in this country on Christmas Day, ahead of the 2019 ASB Classic, but the circumstances are quite different from her only previous visit five years ago.

Back then she was a highly touted junior on the rise but still a virtual unknown, and ranked No 147.

It was her first full season as a professional, and though she lost in the first round in Auckland as a wildcard, the subsequent rise was swift.

Bouchard was ranked No 32 by the end of that year, then hit the headlines the following January with a stunning run to the last four of the Australian Open.

She also made the semi-finals at Roland Garros, then reached the Wimbledon final, topping Angelique Kerber and Simona Halep on the way.

A few months past her 20th birthday, Bouchard was the hottest player on tour.

She couldn’t maintain those lofty heights – but remained a top 50 player – until a dramatic fall over the last 18 months.

The nadir came in June, where she was close to slipping out of the top 200, and found herself grinding through qualifiers, before a recent bounce back.

“I believe that the end of 2018 was a little turning point,” said Bouchard.

“Now I’m looking forward. I’m really excited to play. I’m really motivated – which is something I have struggled with in the past.”

“It’s not like I didn’t what to play anymore or anything like that, but after having great results and then having not so good results sometimes you are like ‘okay, what’s going on,’ and it’s hard to keep going, when you lose, week after week.

“I went through a phase when it was definitely tough, but I knew it was still what I wanted to

do, so I kept pushing through it.”

Bouchard admits it was a strange feeling to be playing qualifying on empty outside courts at Majors, like she endured in 2018.

“In 2013 I won matches in grand slams in the main draw straight away,” said Bouchard.

“So I kinda skipped the whole qualifying phase, because I accelerated through the professional rankings so quickly.

“Maybe I missed some steps and now it is time to re-do all those steps.

But I did them, I did my fair share and now I never want to have to qualify for a slam again… hopefully.”

If first impressions count, the world No 87 Bouchard looks on track to continue her revival next year.

She wowed the crowds at Ellerslie races yesterday, where she was a judge of the fashion in the fields competition and spoke confidently as she did the media rounds.

But more importantly, she seems focused.

She played an exhibition in Hawaii last week – beating former world No 1 Garbine Muguruza before losing to Elise Mertens (world No 12) in a three set final.

The 24-year-old skipped family Christmas celebrations in Montreal to arrive in Auckland early, for the longest possible preparation time.

“I’m here for work, and I am doing what I want to do,” said Bouchard.

“I think that shows the mental state I am in. Look, it doesn’t guarantee anything, but talk to me in a year and we will see.”

“Last year was very tough, very up and down. [But] I got better as the year went on and I ended the year really well.

“I’m very happy with my new coach [and] we have worked hard in the off season.

“I had a couple of good practice matches last week so I feel like sooner rather than later I’ll get some good results.” - NZME

This summer’s Hopman Cup shapes to be the best yet – but will it be the tournament’s last hurrah?

Serena Williams and Roger Federer – two of the greatest players ever to grace a tennis court – will feature at the upcoming mixed-teams event in Perth.

And in a treat for tennis fans all around the world, Federer and Williams will verse each other in the mixed doubles on Tuesday night when Switzerland take on the US at RAC Arena.

But the excitement generated by that match-up will be tempered by the uncertainty surrounding the tournament’s future.

With the ATP World Team Cup set to be introduced in January 2020, the Hopman Cup faces the chop after 31 years in the Perth sporting landscape.

The incoming male-only event is set to feature $20 million in prize money, and will also offer players the chance to play for ranking points.

The 24-team tournament is set to be played across three cities, with Perth, Brisbane, and Sydney tipped to earn hosting rights.

Tennis Australia’s official stance is that it has a contract with the WA State Government to run the Hopman Cup until 2022.

But given the fragile nature of contracts in the modern age, the Hopman Cup faces a bleak future if the World Team Cup is successfully launched.

Federer and Belinda Bencic will team up for a third straight year at the Hopman Cup, with the defending champions keen to guide Switzerland to a fourth title.

But with the US pairing of Williams and rising star Frances Tiafoe also in their group, Switzerland are no shoo-in to make the final.

Germany’s powerful team of Alexander Zverev and Angelique Kerber will start the tournament as clear favourites.

Williams’ appearance at the Hopman Cup will be her first match since her US Open meltdown, and is set to attract worldwide interest.

The 37-year-old received multiple code violations during her US Open final loss to Naomi Osaka.

In the 2015 Hopman Cup final, a furious Williams destroyed her racquet in frustration and called the chair umpire a liar during America’s loss to Poland.

National glory on the line A small representation of local bowlers will be jetting their way to Auckland next week in search of national glory.

Three local players will head up to compete in the Bowls New Zealand National Championship singles and pairs over the course of next week at greens scattered around the Auckland region.

In a change of format from the traditional championships where singles, pairs and fours are contested, only the pairs and singles will be played this year.

And they all get to play each other at some point during the qualifying stages.

The tournament begins on Wednesday with the singles qualifying seeing Neil Atkinson and Alan Hill representing Hinds and Ashburton bowling clubs respectively while Methven’s Simon Fleetwood, who plays out of the Oxford Bowling Club will also be in action.

In what could be considered a cruel twist of fate Atkinson and Fleetwood will square off in the third round of singles qualifying at the Carlton Cornwall Bowling Club on Wednesday afternoon.

Hill who is in the section below the pair has a strong group of players to contend with.

In order to qualify for the post section round of the tournament, players must win three or four of their qualifying matches.

Post-section play begins on the Saturday.

Pairs qualifying begins on Thursday morning at 8:30am with Hill and Atkinson teaming up to form a strong Mid Canterbury combination.

Their section features some big name players but with six games in which to get the required four wins to qualify they get plenty of opportunities.

As well as some well-known bowling names from around the country, their section also includes Fleetwood who will lead for Oxford team-mate, Sean Thompson.

Squad now ‘perfect’ Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren believes manager Juergen Klopp has found the missing pieces to the puzzle which have frustrated previous hopes of a title challenge.

The vital piece which previous managers, Klopp included, had struggled to find is undoubtedly Virgil Van Dijk, with the Holland centre-back overseeing a 12th clean sheet of the season – the same number kept by Liverpool when the Reds last won the title in 1989-90 – in the 4-0 win over Newcastle. - PA

The Mark Richards-skippered yacht crossed the line in Hobart at 8.07am yesterday, outpacing three supermaxis in one of the closest races in the event’s history.

But the owner of second-placed Black Jack, Peter Harburg, says Wild Oats XI’s Automatic Identification System (AIS) was off towards the end of the race.

Wild Oats navigator Juan Vila told the Daily Telegraph that he had turned the AIS on and believed the system had been on for the entire race, which could point to a malfunction.

However, Harburg said Black Jack was left disadvantaged because they didn’t know where Wilds Oats XI was sailing.

“The rules say it’s got to be on all the time,” he told the ABC. “They knew where we were all the time, so that has disadvantaged us and Comanche and we are very disappointed in that.”

Wild Oats, with Mark Richards at the helm, won the Sydney to Hobart race for the ninth time.

Harburg, however, doesn’t intend to lodge a protest but believes the Sydney to Hobart race committee should look into it.

Boats have up to six hours after finishing to lodge an official protest.

Wild Oats XI was first past the post last year but was stripped of line honours after a rule breach at the race’s start, with a subsequent time penalty handing victory to Comanche.

in a time of one day, 19 hours, seven minutes and 21 seconds.

“It’s a day of redemption for us that’s for sure.

“We’re so happy with the result,” Richards said.

Black Jack was just 28 minutes

behind, followed narrowly by Comanche and Infotrack.

All four supermaxis were in the River Derwent at the same time after on Thursday sailing within sight of one another down Tasmania’s east coast.

Wild Oats XI made an overnight gamble to sail a wider route near Tasman Island. It paid off.

“We basically sailed around the opposition and got ourselves into a position where the breeze filled in from the southwest – this morning we were in the right spot,” Richards said.

“That was a game-winning manoeuvre right there.”

Richards had a traditional dip in the River Derwent and champagne celebration at the conclusion of the 74th race.

“It was an amazing contest all the way until the end and I take my hat off to all of the maxi boats,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tasmanian-owned yacht Alive was yesterday leading the race for handicap honours.

This year’s fleet has been reduced to 80 yachts, with Calypso retiring due to steering issues late on Thursday night.

Big year on the water

Ashburton rower Mollie Gibson is eyeing up another big summer on the water.

For Mollie Gibson, 2019 is going to be huge.

A champion rower who has her eyes set on future glory on the water, she has an additional ball to juggle next year, having been named Ashburton College’s head girl for 2019.

But she’s ready to give it her all, on and off the water.

The 2018 rowing season was a massive one for Gibson, after taking three golds and a bronze medal at the New Zealand Secondary School’s Maadi Cup regatta at Lake Karapiro.

From there Gibson made the New Zealand junior rowing team for the World Rowing Junior Championships in the Czech Republic.

Gibson said the highlight of any secondary school rower’s year was the Maadi Cup. “Maadi Cup never fails to be the highlight and this year was no different.

“It was such an amazing week and was really great to see so many of us achieve our goals we had set out for,” Gibson said.

But this year that experience was topped by the trip to Europe for the junior worlds.

She said being part of the New Zealand junior team campaign was incredible.

She said she got to experience the next level of racing and spend time with the most incredible bunch of people.

“Representing New Zealand was such an amazing opportunity and I would be really eager to give it another go in the future.

“I don’t want to get ahead of myself however, and so I know I just need to be consistently working hard and hopefully it will pay off.”

Ultimately, every young rower’s dream was to go to the Olympics one day, but Gibson wasn’t thinking too far ahead at the moment.

She just wanted to take things as they came.

With the 2018/19 season under way, Gibson was focusing her attention on some of the smaller regattas at the moment before moving her focus to the big ones – nationals in February and the Maadi Cup in March.

“I am hoping for a junior trial from that and it just depends on how successful that is as to what the rest of 2019 looks like,” Gibson said.

She was not only in her final year of secondary schooling and making plans to head to university next year, but she was also Ashburton College’s head girl.

“I am expecting it to be a lot of work but I am ready to take it as it comes and do my best to keep a good balance between the three and hopefully get the results I am after,” Gibson said.

“It will be a good challenge for me and I am looking forward to tackling it.

2019 season went and what opportunities were available, but she wanted to continue rowing after she finished school.

As a rower she has plenty of idols to look up to, and to aspire to be like.

New Zealand has produced a number of world beaters in recent years, but for Gibson, her inspiration was closer to home, as some might expect, in a fellow Ashburton rower.

“Veronica Wall has definitely been a huge inspiration for me as she’s been around since I started rowing and has taught me a lot,” Gibson said.

“I would say I am very lucky to have had her to train and compete with for the last couple of years.”

Wall had made a name for herself in recent years, dominating at the Maadi Cup and winning 18 gold medals at both club and school level over the past four years. She also made the trip to the Czech Republic with the junior team for the world where she rowed in a single.

Gibson rowed as part of the quad in the Czech Republic and said she didn’t have a favourite boat, she loved aspects of each of them.

But she did enjoy racing a single as when you were in a boat by yourself, it was all on you, and that was special.

“I also love rowing with my friends in quads or doubles as you have someone to share the successes with which is awesome,” Gibson said.

She hoped to continue rowing a variety of boats over the next couple of year and just see where things took her.

NZ in total control The Black Caps are closing in on their most dominant test victory of all time, and a record winning streak.

These, truly, are New Zealand cricket’s halcyon days.

Another incredibly lopsided day at Hagley Oval has put the hosts just eight wickets away from a test and series-clinching victory – a win that would secure an unprecedented fourth straight series triumph.

Frankly, anything else would be the greatest shock in cricket history, considering the monumental task facing Sri Lanka after they were swatted all over the ground on day three.

The Black Caps racked up a staggering 585-4, with Tom Latham (176) and Henry Nicholls (162 not out) batting the visitors completely out of the test, before Colin De Grandhomme (71 not out from 45 balls) twisted the knife with New Zealand’s fastest test fifty.

It all seemed rather cruel, with Black Caps captain Kane Williamson biding his time before

eventually calling in his troops when their lead hit 660 – setting the eighth largest target in test history.

Unlike in Wellington, where they went a day without losing a wicket, surely this time there is no hope left for Sri Lanka.

They lost both their openers in the 14 overs before stumps, there is no rain forecast to save them, and thus they have to bat for two straight days.

It won’t happen.

It can’t happen.

Another record-setting conclusion is the more likely outcome – if you want to get ahead of yourself, consider that since 1934, no team has won a test by more than 500 runs.

At worst, New Zealand’s biggest test victory – 254 runs – is surely set to be broken, following a day in which plenty of records tumbled.

Let’s start with Tom Latham.

The 26-year-old has truly cemented himself as the opener of the future, becoming the first New Zealand opener to

reach 150 on three occasions.

Resuming on 74, he again looked at ease at he slowly ground his way to his eighth test century from 267 balls, bringing it up with a cut to third man, and saluting his team-mates.

Latham ended up facing 889 balls this series – the most by a New Zealand batsman in twotest series, and in the midst of it all, he became the first New Zealander since Brendon McCullum to reach 150 in consecutive tests.

He added 214 for the fourth wicket with Nicholls, who promptly continued the onslaught when Latham finally departed.

It was a day, and an innings, where everyone contributed for the hosts.

All of the top six batsmen reached 40 – for just the second time in New Zealand test history, and all five partnerships were of 50 runs or more, a New Zealand first.

Nicholls was involved in two of them, and brought up his

third century of the year with a chanceless innings.

And, just when everyone expected a declaration, he came back after tea to reach his highest test score.

It seemed as milestones were being racked up every over, and de Grandhomme only added to Sri Lanka’s demise.

He brought up his record 50 off just 28 balls – one ball faster than Tim Southee’s effort on debut in 2008 – and he and Nicholls added an unbeaten 124 in just 87 balls.

Finally, Williamson put the Sri Lankan bowlers out of their misery, but the pain wasn’t over for the batsmen.

Dimuth Karunaratne was caught down the legside for a second ball duck, and Danushka Gunathilaka was caught behind needlessly swiping for four.

Dinesh Chandimal and Kusal Mendis saw them through to stumps at 24-2, ending a dire day with a meek moral victory.

Alas, it will be the only victory Sri Lanka will claim.

Mighty Santana eyes more cup glory Trainer-driver John Hay has his sights on more southern Cup glory with Mighty Santana after the pacer’s Gore Cup win.

NZ Cup winner on the road to Trentham The OPS Plumbing and Pipeline Stratford Cup (2000m) at Te Kapua Park today is the next stop on Matamata galloper Bizzwinkle’s cups journey.

The Glen Old-trained five-yearold has had a freshen up since his win in the Gr.3 New Zealand Cup (3200m) in November.

“We haven’t done a lot with

him since, he’s just done a bit of maintenance work,” Old said.

“Really tomorrow is all about giving him a bit of a pipe-opener before the Wellington Cup at Trentham in four weeks’ time.”

While he won Stratford’s feature race last year, Old said he’s not expecting Bizzwinkle to achieve back-to-back success in the race.

“He’s up in the weights seven kilos from last year,” he said.

“Looking at the field I would like to think he would be in the first four but I’m not expecting him to win.”

Bizzwinkle is the top weighted runner in the race at 60kgs with his regular trackwork rider Jasmine Fawcett on-board and claiming

2kg. The son of Rip Van Winkle led from the jump to the finish in the New Zealand Cup, as he is renowned to do, and while he’s drawn well at barrier two Old isn’t certain Bizzwinkle will lead on Saturday.

“We will just see what the tempo is like,” he said. “There are a couple that might go forward and

we don’t want to get in a speed duel so if we can lead we will, otherwise we will just take a trail.”

Bizzwinkle is currently at fixed odds of $14 to win the NZ Campus Wellington Cup (3200m) and Old said Saturday’s run along with a bit of jumping will have him fit and ready for the two-mile race.
