Polytech’s future safe BY DAISY HUDSON

The future of Aoraki Polytechnic’s Ashburton campus is secure, despite the institution facing another multi-million dollar loss this year. The polytechnic is exploring the idea of a merger with Christchurch Polytechnic and Institute of Technology (CPIT) after years of falling enrolments and substantial deficits. Aoraki has not broken even on local programmes for several years and it lost $3 million in 2013, with a similar loss forecast for this year. A merger would see the establishment of a Canterbury wide polytechnic, although the future of Aoraki’s Otago campus is yet to be determined. However, the future of the Ashburton campus is safe, according to Aoraki Polytechnic chief executive Alex Cabrera. Mr Cabrera told the Guardian Ashburton was central to Aoraki’s developments, and was important in terms of primary industry and other service industries. He said Aoraki will be launching a six-month project to assess the viability of creating a new combined entity. “There are a multitude of issues
the development of the project would look at,” he said. “Some of these questions can’t be answered for some time.” In a statement to media, board chair Janie Annear said Aoraki was in the “difficult position of wanting to be able to stand alone”, but it could not continue eroding its reserves without the certainty that it could become sustainable in the near future. Mr Cabrera said any possible new entity would need to deliver relevant training and education that met the needs of learners and industries in the Aoraki region, and maintain campuses within the region. Aoraki’s agreement with Lincoln University, under which they pool resources and expertise around their land-based sector, will not be affected, Mr Cabrera said. “We need to build on the progress made over the last 18 months and continue to develop this partnership, as this is critical to support our region’s economic development,” he said. According to Mrs Annear, Aoraki’s funding had been confirmed for next year, meaning it will be business as usual for staff and students while options for 2016 were being explored.
