For Tinwald resident Huntley Gray it is not the question of if there will be a major accident on his doorstep, but when.

Gray lives at the intersection of Nixon Street, Tarbottons Road and Hollands

Road, and holds genuine fears that one day that serious crash will occur outside his doorstep, or that a car will crash into the house itself.

The intersection sits in a 70km/h zone between Nixon Street and Hollands Road which cars can travel straight

through, while traffic travelling along Tarbottons Road are controlled by give way signs.

Skatepark closer to reality Major crash:

‘It’s only a matter of time’

It may have taken 12 years and some ups and downs along the way, but the Kidzmethven skatepark site is now officially active.

And on Tuesday afternoon, at the site on the corner of Bank and McMillan streets in the heart of Methven, committee members had cause for celebration when the first clump of soil was turned.

That honour sat with long-time committee member Sally-Ann Kircher who symbolically turned the first soil.

“It is very exciting and somewhat emotional to see this finally happening,” she said.

“It was always our intention to provide a free outdoor activity for the youth of Methven, so it feels good today to be taking a big step closer to that goal.

“The skatepark is going to be such an asset for our town, something I know my grandchildren will be enjoying for years to come.”

The Kidzmethven committee was formed in 2007 by a group of committed locals with the view to improving the Methven Playground next to the Methven Medical Centre.

Initially the plan was to incorporate the skatepark into the existing playground.

with increased activities was needed in Methven.

While Kidzmethven has remained active over the years with fundraising projects to keep the funds coming in, it was a question from committee member Josh Horn about what is happening with the skatepark that reignited enthusiasm for the project and got things moving again.

Through the Ashburton District Council, a different site was secured, new plans drawn up and funding grants applied for.

Kidzmethven chairwoman Liz McMillan said the journey to get to Tuesday had been a long one.

ued community support and a brilliant multi-talented committee.”

The 2​024-square-metre block of land is a reserve owned by the district council and has been leased to Kidzmethven for a nominal (peppercorn) rent.

A grant from the council, along with several other local organisations, charities and foundations, has helped to fund the project.

The Methven Community Board has also been involved in the development, assisting with the application for the resource consent.

Like the planning and fundraising ​ that has brought the project to this point, the construction of the park will be carried out by volunteers.

Second candidate has boundary near-miss

The realignment of ward boundaries ahead of October’s local body elections caught out more than one candidate for the Ashburton District Council.

While sitting urban ward councillor Russell Ellis has been disqualified as a candidate because it was discovered after nominations closed that one of his nominators lived outside the urban ward, a new contender, Rochelle Castle-Wilson, also found herself caught out by ward boundary changes.

Castle-Wilson, however, had her incorrect nominator caught before deadline, while Ellis did not.

Her nomination was initially accepted and ticked off as correct, but she was later contacted and told she would need to find another nominator. That highlights the need to make changes

to the checking process to ensure the same errors are not made in future elections, she said.

“And I want there to be absolute transparency around this. I don’t want someone down the track to say that I had the opportunity to fix mine.”

Castle-Wilson said she was fortunate her incorrect nominator was picked up in time, but said that should have alerted the council to the need for extra vigilance when they checked whether nominators lived within the correct ward. Nominators must live in the ward for which they are nominating a candidate.

She had been nominated for the urban ward and one of her initial nominators gave his address as a rural delivery.

When this was checked at council, the road address was manually written on the nomination form, but no red flags

were raised over whether that person was urban or rural, she said.

“Later someone must have checked again and it was picked up and it then became a matter of urgency to get a second nominator.”

The following morning, Castle-Wilson returned to council with the signature of an eligible nominator at the same time as Ellis was lodging his nomination.

And she’s questioning why, with one near miss on board, it wasn’t top of the council’s mind that staff needed to be extra careful when checking nominators’ addresses against the new ward boundaries “I’m lucky, mine was picked up early and I had an opportunity to fix it. I know this is a system fault but I’m standing for commonsense and commonsense says something is not working here.”

“Even worse is probably when they go straight through (the give-way signs on) Tarbottons Road.

“I am worried they are going to end up in our house one day.”

Gray said the worst crash he had seen in his three-and-a-half years living in the house was recently when a truck carrying gas bottles collided with a car, resulting in the car coming to rest in a ditch across the road.

Gray has spoken to the Ashburton District Council on multiple occasions, saying the roading manager had agreed that the 100km/h sign should be moved further up Hollands Road, but that he had also been told there are four members of staff that would call him back but never did.

Ashburton District Council service delivery group manager Neil McCann said the intersection is being monitored, especially given the increase in subdivisions at the southern end of Tarbottons Road.

“The speed limits in this area are also currently under review with the intention to go to public consultation before the end of this calendar year,” he said.

The roading network in the Ashburton District is comprised of 1473 intersections, with 797 of those being rural and 676 urban.

“Most rural intersections will be cross-roads, with only one road controlled, generally on both sides, but there are a number of multi-leg intersections with multiple signs,” McCann said.

“Advance warning signs are usually installed where there are curves, or where there is not a clear approach to see the control sign in time to react.

“Approaches to state highways and our higher classified roads may also have advance warning signs; we are currently reviewing as we endeavour to improve safety for the travelling public.”

There are 30 advance warning signs for stop controls (stop ahead), 85 advance warning signs for give way controls (giveway ahead), 180 stop signs and 924 give way signs.

“Council staff regularly check intersections to ensure the conditions remain appropriate for the signage installed and if there are any reported incidents at the intersection, further investigation of the site is undertaken,” he said.

“Council work practices are audited by NZTA and also, at times, by special interest groups on behalf of NZTA.”

Nationwide interest in historic Chinese settlement

Ashburton’s Chinese market garden settlement is attracting national interest that could spark a cash surge for restoration work.

Heritage New Zealand gave the Allens Road Ng King Brothers Chinese Market Garden Settlement a declaration of archaeological significance earlier this year and since then interest in the restoration project had gained momentum, heritage planning consultant Arlene Baird said.

“There’s an immense amount of validation for the project and Heritage New Zealand is now toying with the idea of listing it on its Heritage New Zealand list, they’re quite keen and this would round out the protection,” she said.

A commitment had also been made to fund an ex-gratia payment for a project within the larger restoration project and the amount given was likely to be in the tens of thousands, council commercial property adviser Racheal Western said “They’ve said they don’t want us to choose just one building, they want the project to be something that will be fundamental to the overall value of the project.”

were weather, wind and water proof, Western said.

Roofing iron will be removed and stored and galvanised ma-

terial placed over each building before the original roofing iron is replaced in a way that will not impede other restoration work.

It’s a simple solution that will add to the longevity and structural integrity of the buildings,” she said.

Ultimately the buildings would be restored to a standard where they were safe for the public to look into but not enter. The building at the entrance to the settlement, however, is likely to be strengthened to allow entry.

The original shop in the settlement will be reconstructed and it will be accessible to the public.

This area is also likely to contain displays of items found during digs by Underground Overground Archaeology. These items are being cleaned, photographed and catalogued.

Ministry jumps gun on college zoning

It might be good news for Geraldine High, but a last minute zone change could carve a number of potential students off the Ashburton College roll.

In the first draft of zone boundaries between the two schools, families living between the Rangitata and Hinds Rivers were largely in the college zone. This zone also included some families south of the Rangitata River.

The draft zone created huge angst among affected families, some of whom lived closer to Geraldine than Ashburton and who have strong ties with that town.

Public meetings were held in

Hinds, Winchester and at Pleasant Point with parents concerned the new zone would see their children travelling to a more distant school. A 1000 plus signature petition was delivered to Parliament and countless submissions of objection were made to the Ministry of Education.

Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon also pitched into the debate, writing to the Ministry of Education outlining the concerns of his constituents.

“For some families it would have meant travelling 35 kilometres to school at Ashburton College rather than 19 kilometres to Geraldine, the closest high school,” he said.

It was a win for common-sense,

Falloon said, that the ministry had accepted the argument that this made no sense .

The ministry has now had a change of heart, creating an open zone between the two rivers giving families a choice of secondary school.

That decision has puzzled Ashburton College principal Ross Preece who said it has been made while the college’s proposed zone is still open for consultation.

“It’s an interesting process.

Ours doesn’t close off until September 1 and the process from there would have been negotiated with the ministry,” he said.

Now it appears, by default, the college zone was a done deal, he said.

“I did ring the ministry yesterday and ask for clarification, asked how this is possible. It’s interesting that this decision could be made when we’re still consulting.”

With an area that under the proposed zone boundary would have seen students travel to college now an open zone, a significant potential student catchment had disappeared, Preece said.

“Although to be fair there are families who are Geraldine people and whose children now go to Geraldine High and others who are Ashburton people and send their children to college so I guess it does provide choice around which college offers the subjects they want.”

With the open zone established the issue in the future could be around bus entitlement as rewriting bus routes was always a complex issue, he said.

The current bus entitlement zones were to remain in place until the end of this year, with buses free to go into each other’s catchment.

What happens next is up to the college board, Preece said.

The school’s zone with Mount Hutt College is already established but to the north, the college’s new zone will include an area in Rakaia township that is currently in the Ellesmere College zone. Students in that area, however, already travel to college.

Helping cash hand for Harold Two Mid Canterbury groups handed over a total of $5500 to the Mid and South Canterbury Life Education Trust recently.

The donations were made at the annual Harold Club dinner in Timaru, where Ashburton Altrusa Club members gave $2500 and the Ashburton Plains Rotary Club gave $2000.

The funds will be used to support Harold’s mobile classroom, which is used to deliver the health and wellbeing programme to Mid Canterbury primary schools.

The mobile classroom is eagerly awaited by schoolchildren around the region and the teaching space has amazing resources that engage their interest.

The Life Education programme is nearing its third decade and makes regular stops at Mid Canterbury schools with its onboard educator.

The Harold Club dinner was also a special occasion for Mid Canterbury’s Ray King and Roger Scammell, who both received New Zealand Life Education Trust life membership awards.

King has served 16 years as a member of the Mid and South Canterbury Life Education Trust

Environment Canterbury is expecting half the 92 consent holders, whose water-takes from the Ashburton River are under review, to apply for a 12-month extension to explore their options.

Those consent holders have formed an Ashburton River Irrigators’ Association and, like all consent holders affected by the review, have until September 12 to respond to new conditions of their takes.

ECan staff updated the Ashburton Water Zone Committee on the review this week and said they were pleased with progress.

Consent review makes good progress

These were farmers that had an alternative source of water or storage, or whose existing takes had conditions not that different to the proposed new conditions, she said.

ECan staff were making contact with all consent holders to make sure those who did not come to community meetings were aware of the review.

“People are working through what they need to do and have a response by September 12.”

Zone committee chairman Bill Thomas said farmers were show-

ing a lot of goodwill. “It could have been a real fight and for some it will be financially difficult, but they are prepared to do it.”

ECan has this week released a more detailed report, available on its website, setting out the methodology used in the hydrological modelling it undertook to determine the impact of the minimum flows on water availability.

Sullivan said it had been peer reviewed. A summary of water availability information has been available on the website since before the consent holder meetings.

She said consent holders and consultants had also asked for more information about the data and method used to calculate the degree of stream depletion.

That information was also available on the web page and had been circulated to those who requested it.

September 12 is the last day for consent holders to propose alternative consent conditions or to seek a timeframe extension.

The irrigators’ group had signalled it would be seeking a 12-month extension to look for alternative water sources and assess how the review would affect their farming businesses.

The group is talking with irrigation schemes, mainly MHV Water and Ashburton Lyndhurst Irrigation, about sourcing water.

ECan councillor David Caygill, who is a member of the zone committee, said minimum flows in the Ashburton River and a likely review had been talked about since 2012.

The Ashburton Water Zone Committee will not start the process to find a replacement for Ben Curry, who departed in June.

Curry, former chief executive of the RDR management company, has moved to the North Island. The zone committee decided to wait until after the local body elections and holiday break before beginning the replacement process. Curry was one of seven community members; zone committees must have between 4-7 members appointed from the community.

Business Exchange coming to Ashburton Ashburton is set to play host to the first regional business exchange event, a new initiative started by the Southern Business Exchange to provide a forum for showcasing local products and services and delivering training specific to individual businesses.

The Ashburton Business Exchange is aimed at the almost 30,000 small to medium enterprises located outside of Christchurch in the Canterbury area, co-founder Catherine Stuart said.

“The isolation that these businesses feel and their struggle to keep up-to-date with legal and market requirements is one of the driving forces behind Southern Business Exchange,” she said.

“We want to create an environment where smaller enterprises can connect and strengthen business ties, generate leads, and associate with industry experts who can clarify how the latest trends or government initiatives directly affect their business.

“We aim to do this on a regular basis in regional locations that don’t require major travel arrangements or time away from the business for our attendees.”

Ashburton Business Exchange will be followed by business exchanges in other regions across

the South Island, including the West Coast, Otago, Marlborough and Southland.

The company will also offer training courses that allow attendees to work on their business strategy and marketing plans as they progress through the course, taking what is normally delivered as theoretical information and applying it directly to an individual’s business.

The Southern Business Exchange has approached a number of local councils who are excited by the prospect of increased support for industries in their areas, including the Ashburton District Council “We are thrilled that Southern Business Exchange has chosen to launch its first business exchange in Ashburton,” Ashburton District Council chief executive Hamish Riach said.

“We welcome any potential support and resources they may provide to help strengthen our local business community.”

Band performs superbly for silver The 26-member Mount Hutt College Concert Band competed at the South Island’s biggest secondary school concert band event, and came home with silver.

Head of music at the school, Matthew Wood, said the band performed superbly in both the adjudicated performance and the gala concert, at the Christchurch Wind Festival. Adjudicator Pablo Ruiz Henao, who is principal bass trombone with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, commented on the group members’ superb effort and awarded them the honour.

“Over the past few weeks the group has made a particular effort to refine and perfect all the smaller details within the pieces. It was wonderful to see them put it all together on the day to present a fantastic performance,” Wood said.

It follows a successful fundraising concert at the school earlier this month, when about $5278 was raised.

“A little over $2200 of this has so far been used to purchase two flutes, two clarinets, a tenor saxophone and a trombone. The focus has been on purchasing quality second-hand instruments to achieve the best value for money,” Wood said.

Sewing skills produce much needed curtains for homes Some Ashburton homes will be a little warmer thanks to the sewing skills of members of Altrusa International of Ashburton and the generosity of the public.

Using curtain material donated to the service club’s fabric ba-

zaars, members turned it into 93 curtains of various sizes which have been given to Presbyterian Support and St Vincent de Paul.

These organisations will give them to people living in homes where curtains are needed.

mary Moore, said the material had come in for the last two fabric bazaars and did not sell. It was felt it could be put to good use as curtains.

Club members spent a day sewing the curtains, and others were made at home.

National may dash gun law hopes NZME National appears to have dashed the Government’s hopes of pushing through a second near bipartisan set of gun laws aimed at further tightening the country’s firearms rules.

Although the second tranche of gun law reforms is still highly likely to become law, National leader Simon Bridges said his party was unlikely to support the legislation as it has done with prior gun law reform bills.

“In short, the Government is going after the good guys and not the bad guys [with these rules].”

Act leader David Seymour, who has also ruled out his support for the bill, said it was about time National woke up to the fact the proposed law would target law-abiding firearm owners.

The first tranche of gun laws passed through Parliament almost unanimously, with just Seymour in opposition.

They were rushed through Parliament after the March 15 terror attacks, where a gunman murdered 51 people using automatic weapons.

While the first set of laws banned most semi-automatic weapons, the second tranche would put in place a national gun register, tighter rules for gun dealership licences and higher penalties for breaking current gun rules.

The second tranche of gun laws has not yet gone before the House for a vote and has not

been received by Cabinet either.

But a copy of the draft legislation, leaked to National, shows the potential fines for breaches of various compliance standards would jump from $1000 to as high as $10,000.

The penalty for licence breaches would be increased to two years’ jail or a maximum fine of $20,000 and the bill would include a raft of new rules and requirements for gun clubs, the papers show.

This is the basis of National’s opposition to the proposed law.

“National is unlikely to support it; that’s because the Government hasn’t heeded our warnings, publicly and privately,” Bridges said.

He said law-abiding gun owners would face a lot of new rules – but not enough would be done to clamp down on the “baddies”.

The baddies, according to Bridges, are the criminals, the gangs and the extremists.

Seymour said although voting against the second tranche of gun reforms won’t excuse National’s decision to support a “rushed undemocratic process in April” he welcomes the party’s decision.

“ACT will work constructively to try to improve the Government’s legislation.

“However, we will oppose a shortened select committee process and proposals such as a gun register, which has been shown to be an expensive failure in other countries.”

Acclaimed rose breeder dies NZME International rose breeder Sam McGredy has died in Auckland.

Born in Portadown, Northern Ireland, Sam was only 2 when his father died leaving him heir to the family rose nursery, established by his great-grandfather, the first Samuel McGredy, in 1880.

The nursery was requisitioned during World War Two for the growing of vegetables and on his return from the United States at the end of the war, the schoolboy found “half-a-dozen scungy glasshouses filled with tomatoes and no one who knew anything about roses”.

At its peak under his stewardship, the nursery grew one mil-

lion plants on 120ha and had 160 staff. From about 60,000 seedlings a year, two or three were chosen for release to the market.

After several friends and business associates, both Catholic and Protestant, were murdered during the troubles in Northern Ireland, Sam decided to move to another country, preferably one where he wouldn’t be so reliant on greenhouses.

He and his family arrived in New Zealand in 1972.

New Zealand-bred McGredy roses include Dublin Bay, Bantry Bay, Sexy Rexy, Paddy Stephens, My Girl and Aotearoa.

The New Zealand Rose Society paid tribute to McGredy, calling him an icon of roses in New Zea-

land and around the world.

The Rose Society says he helped establish Plant Variety Rights in New Zealand, which gave plant breeders of a wide variety of species the ability to protect new cultivars and make a return on their investment in developing them.

It says he had also encouraged and supported other rose breeders in New Zealand, who are now producing many fine roses.

“May Sam rest in peace and let us treasure all those beautiful roses he created.”

He is survived by his wife, Jillian, his children and grandchildren.

McGredy was a big rugby fan and his funeral will be held at Eden Park on Monday.

Licensed immigration advisor censured NZME A licensed immigration adviser has been censured and ordered to pay a penalty of $2000 for her lack of professionalism and due care.

A complaint by Immigration New Zealand against Qing Tian was upheld by the Immigration Advisers Complaints and Disciplinary Tribunal.

The tribunal found Tian had not assessed and applied the immigration instructions with due care and professionalism, and

that she had corresponded with INZ in a way that was neither professional nor respectful.

Tian, a director of Phoenix International Consultancy Group Limited, also refused to disclose her full files upon lawful demand by the authority.

She was acting for five clients, all from China, who were seeking residence in New Zealand under the skilled migrant category.

INZ had declined their applications on the grounds that their employment did not meet the skilled employment criteria and

that their English did not meet the required threshold.

Appeals lodged by all five on the advice of Tian to the Immigration and Protection Tribunal had also been unsuccessful.

In its decision, the tribunal found Tian had misunderstood the immigration instructions, and that her correspondence with INZ brought the immigration advisers’ profession into disrepute.

She had accused named immigration officers and managers of incompetence, racism, dis-

honesty, exploiting and abusing migrants, corruption, running an immigration scam, malice, of instituting a hate crime against her, criminal harassment and of abusing a complaint process as an act of revenge.

It was found that the alleged conspiracy against her because she was ethnically Chinese or a successful adviser was a figment of her imagination.

“Most advisers would be horrified by her personal animosity, and her lack of judgment and objectivity in her relationship with

Immigration New Zealand,” the decision said.

Tian also accused the authority’s then registrar of colluding with INZ’s complaint, and regarded that as an abuse of process.

Her conduct in relation to correspondence with INZ, the tribunal found, was too serious to be sanctioned by way of caution only.

“It amounted to sustained, personalised attack on not just the competence, but also the integrity and motivation of named officers,” the tribunal said.

Autistic man ‘broken’ NZME Jayden D’Abaco, 19, had worked hard to get back the life he had before he was bashed on a Melbourne bus in 2017.

The bashing left the autistic teen from Tarneit, Melbourne, struggling socially and afraid to go outside.

But through persistence and his mates at the local AFL football club he took back some control.

His father said Jayden is back at square one after being set upon by a group of youths, described as African in appearance, again while walking alone in Melbourne’s west on Saturday night.

“Jayden stays close to home. He only has a very small group of friends,” Frank D’Abaco told media.

“So this, on Saturday night, has completely destroyed the boy. No-one will ever know what they’ve done to him mentally.

“He won’t leave his room.

He hasn’t left his room since Sunday. He won’t speak. He won’t do anything.

“It’s happened to him twice and he’s broken”.

Jayden D’Abaco was attacked by eight men, while walking to a nightclub to see friends.

He saw the group following him and, when he began walking faster, they ran towards him. His father says he was punched and kicked, had a shard of glass dug into his forehead and was choked.

His injuries include a fractured eye socket and significant bruising, but there are mental scars too.

Frank sat on the steps of Melbourne’s Parliament House dejected yesterday.

From 8am he waited for the

chance to speak directly to Premier Daniel Andrews about an issue he believes the Victorian leader is ignoring.

“This guy doesn’t care,” he said, pointing towards Parliament House.

“When I speak, I speak on behalf of my family and all Victorians. This is not about me. This is about all of us.

Your son, daughter, anybody.

“Every day of the week, Dan Andrews will tell you the crime rate is down. But the severity of the crime is through the roof and he won’t deal with it. Doesn’t want to

know about it.”

He said he was “disgusted” by the way Andrews had put the issue of youth crime on the shelf.

“I’m disgusted. He has shown me no respect. He has shown Victorians no respect.”

Police say they are following leads but have not made any arrests at this stage.

“Police are currently investigating an incident where a 19-year-old male was approached by approximately eight young people wearing dark clothing,” Senior Sergeant Samantha Ryan told reporters yesterday.

“He was chased by them for a short time, and was subsequently assaulted by them.”

She said it was a “cowardly attack” and one that was “spontaneous” and “opportunistic”.

The attack has left Jayden and his family asking why they were targeted not once but twice.

“Jayden just says, ‘Why me?’ … ‘Why me twice?’,” Frank said.

“He doesn’t understand.

He’s 19 years old, he’s autistic.

They’ve destroyed him once, they’ve destroyed him twice.”

Hurricane to strengthen, could hit Puerto Rico AP Tropical Storm Dorian is threatening Puerto Rico with a direct hit, as forecasters said it made a last-minute shift in its path and could reach near-hurricane strength in its approach to the US territory.

The storm is expected to pass over or near western and central Puerto Rico, with landslides, widespread flooding and power outages possible.

President Donald Trump declared an emergency and ordered federal assistance for local authorities.

“Practically the entire island will be under sustained tropical storm force winds,” said Roberto García, director of US

National Weather Service San Juan, during a press conference.

Dorian was located about 440 kilometres southeast of Ponce, Puerto Rico yesterday.

The US National Hurricane Centre said it had maximum sustained winds of 85km/h and was forecast to strengthen during the next 24 hours as it moves west-northwest at 20km/h. The storm is expected to dump 10 to 15 centimetres of rain with isolated amounts of 20 centimetres.

The change in the storm’s course concerned many across the US territory, where some 30,000 homes still have blue tarps as roofs nearly two years after Hurricane Maria.

The island’s 3.2 million inhabitants still depend on a shaky power grid that has remained prone to outages since it was destroyed by the Category 4 storm.

Dorian has already caused power outages and downed trees in Barbados and St Lucia, and a still-uncertain longterm track showed the storm near Florida over the weekend.

Although top government officials in Puerto Rico said they were prepared for the storm and had sufficient equipment, a couple of mayors, including those in the western region, said they did not have enough generators or shelters that were properly set up.

The island’s transportation secretary acknowledged that crews are still rebuilding roads damaged or blocked by Maria, more than 1000 of which remain blocked by that storm’s landslides.

Puerto Rico Gov. Wanda Vázquez urged those living in flood-prone areas or under a blue tarp to move into one of the island’s 360 shelters. Housing Secretary Fernando Gil has said some 9000 to 13,000 homes with blue tarp roofs are located in the region that Dorian is expected to affect the most.

Dorian was expected to move near the Turks and Caicos Islands and south-eastern Bahamas today or tomorrow.

Black Panther sequel A Black Panther sequel is coming to theatres on May 6, 2022, Marvel Studios has announced. Ryan Coogler, who wrote and directed the 2018 original, will return to direct the sequel. He made the announcement onstage at Disney’s D23 Expo in Anaheim, California. Black Panther, an action movie that also celebrates black culture and the African diaspora, nabbed three Oscar awards earlier this year, and became the first superhero film to earn a Best Picture nomination. It won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Motion Picture in March.

New flame for Stewart Kristen Stewart is very focused on her new girlfriend. The Twilight star has been spotted kissing her new flame Dylan Meyer, following her split from Stella Maxwell, and a source has now revealed the two are closer than ever. A source told E! News: “Kristen is spending time with Dylan and very happy about it. She was seeing Stella for a little bit while it worked, but now she has moved on with Dylan. She is focused on having fun.”

Philippine ferry fire kills 3, 100 plus rescued AP At least three people were killed and more than 100 others were rescued after a fire engulfed a ferry in the southern Philippines overnight, the coast guard said Tuesday.

Search and rescue efforts were continuing after the fire on the M/V Lite Ferry 16 off Dapitan city in Zamboanga del Norte province, coast guard spokesman Armand Balilo said.

It was not immediately clear how many people were on

board, a common dilemma when such sea accidents happen. The coast guard said a manifest showed the 645-ton ferry was carrying 137 passengers, including 28 children, but it was unclear how many crewmen were on board.

A 1-year-old girl and a 60-year-old male passenger died while at least 102 others were rescued by passing ships and boats, Balilo said. He said a third person died, but did not have any details.

ing to be rescued at the loading bay of the ferry, which also carried some vehicles. Orange flames and smoke would later engulf almost the entire ferry in the darkness but the ship stayed afloat, about 3 kilometres off a port in Dapitan city, where it was destined.

Some passengers were quoted in local news reports as saying they jumped off the ship into the choppy waters in panic when the fire broke out and were later rescued by passing cargo and fishing vessels.

The inter-island ferry left Santander town in central Cebu province Tuesday, Balilo said. The fire apparently started in the engine room.

Meanwhile, officials warned ferries not to venture out to sea in the northern Philippines after a fast-moving storm blew across the main island of Luzon overnight.

Sea accidents are common in the Philippine archipelago because of frequent storms, badly maintained boats, overcrowding and weak enforcement of safety regulations.

A perfectly executed final act L

ike the master puppeteer, pulling on the strings of anticipation, Steve Hansen saved one of his best acts in the role of head coach of the All Blacks for yesterday lunch time.

Months of conjecture and debate, all of it centred around one small group of men – 0.0006 per cent of New Zealand’s population to be precise, the ranks which will head to Japan later this year to try and become historic winners of a third straight Rugby World Cup, was settled yesterday.

And Hansen commanded the moment like he was born to do it – and, for the best part anyway, did so in a fashion that gave the occasion the respect and careful movement that it deserved.

Now, Hansen press conferences are renowned for their unpredictable nature.

He’s commanded that centre seat, in between his other coaches or a raft of players during his time in the All Blacks fold, like a masterful pro. Often it only takes one question, one remark, one leading comment and he’s off – throwing satire and, often in the same breath, seriousness at the person

asking the question.

I’ve been in a fair few of those press conferences over the years – each one as entertaining and informative as the next, but that constant fear of running foul of his quick-wit and somewhat simplistic mind was always there in the back of my mind.

Yesterday seemed different though.

Perhaps because it was the final time Hansen would sit down like that as head coach of the All Blacks and deliver such news to a rugby-mad public, which would have been hanging on his every word.

He was calm, collected and well prepared. He showed the right amount of enthusiasm for the

31 names read out just minutes earlier while there was also an element of humility when it came to the unlucky ones who missed out.

Those situations have been described by former All Blacks coaches as some of the toughest moments of their lives. Making those phone calls to players to tell them that their dream of wearing the black jersey in a Rugby World Cup was over must tug at the heart strings.

In particular, that phone call to Owen Franks – a man who Hansen himself described as being a “great All Black” – must have been the toughest one of all.

We look from the outside in and see a job that almost any New

Zealander would love to hold – a position of such power and responsibility that only very few get to enjoy – but it’s not all bells and whistles, situations like those that Hansen and his team have worked through over the past few days, weeks and months while determining a squad would test the mettle of any person.

Yet Hansen yesterday played it cool and calm, he was structured and strong and visibly relaxed the longer the press conference went on and then, and only then, did that all too familiar cheeky side we’ve come to know, creep in.

That side, although it might sometimes make us raise the odd eyebrow, is a side we really do enjoy.

ood news Mid Canterbury! Wages are up, unemployment is down, and our Government is investing in getting more young Kiwis into jobs.

Unemployment has just fallen to 3.9 per cent, the lowest rate in 11 years (of course this figure is even lower in our region). Twenty-one thousand more people are in work in the last three months and 92,000 new jobs have been created since we took office.

Right here in Canterbury, 6300 people found jobs in the last three months alone. We know that more jobs will be created locally once the Opuke Thermal Pools and Spa complex opens too!

The last time New Zealand had an unemployment level this low, Helen Clark was the Prime Minister and we were thriving under a Labour Government.

It’s no coincidence that Jacinda Ardern’s Government is now delivering more jobs and higher wages for New Zealanders.

We’re running a surplus and boast growth rates higher than the countries we compare ourselves to, like Australia and the USA. Our policies are seeing wages rise across the country, with the average hourly earnings at $32.27.

The low unemployment and jump in wages will mean a whole lot for people in Mid Canterbury.

Getting more people into skilled, well-paid employment makes our communities stronger.

I was proud to see Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Employment Minister Willie Jackson announce the expansion of our successful Mana in Mahi programme, which helps young people into apprenticeships.

We know that, for young Kiwis, getting their first job can be the first step in getting into lifelong work. Through Mana in Mahi, our young people get the chance to earn and learn,

getting paid while they train to do a job they love.

As Jacinda Ardern said, meaningful employment is about more than just supporting yourself and your family. It also provides a sense of purpose, community, and belonging.

Not only does Mana in Mahi mean more young people are on the pathway to employment, but it helps meet the needs of industry.

Employers have told us that taking on someone to train is a big deal, especially for small businesses. That’s why, under our plan, employers receive a wage subsidy, as well as help with other costs.

All this helps us achieve our goal to make sure our economy

is growing and working for everyone.

We want everyone, wherever they live, to share in the benefits of economic growth.

For too long we were focused on GDP, without making sure that growth was benefiting our regions, and the wellbeing of our people.

This government is fixing that by putting people – in the cities and the regions – at the centre of everything we do.

YOUR VIEW Missed opportunity Yesterday (Tuesday, August 27) I went to AWMZC meeting to hear a presentation on regenerative agriculture to be given by John King, who has 20 years experience in this field.

He was due to be heard at 1pm.

The previous session was late.

Once the meeting started apologies etc were dealt with.

Then the committee had to deal with an important letter from Forest and Bird.

John King had to leave by 2pm to catch a flight to Auckland. He never got to make his presentation. Presumably he was paid

Why could the chairman have not moved the agenda around in order for John King to make his presentation?

I feel it was very bad manners on the chairman’s part to not do this, and also a waste of council funds.

This form of agriculture is gaining traction worldwide and I have decided, after very careful consideration, to go down this route myself, after 40 years of very conventional farming.

The committee missed an opportunity to gain an insight in to the practice that has huge benefits for soil, water quality and climate change.

James Halford Response: Ashburton Water Zone Committee chairman Bill Thomas said the meeting had been running late and he was not aware Mr King needed to depart by 2pm.

He said the committee would be writing to apologise and invite him back.

He had agreed to stop by and present to the committee because he was in the region on other business.

Ellis nomination I wish to voice out the problem of councillor Russell Ellis being ruled out by a decision that he

would have been involved in as a councillor.

During the representation review on district boundary changes, he would have been one of the decision makers. He should be made responsible for his own mistake. I do not agree that anyone should apologise to him.

This shows a councillor should have an eye for detail for any decision they made. If he can’t look after himself even in this regard, which is important, how can he look after the constituents?

Mistakes have cost too much money for the ratepayers.

No dairy cattle at this year’s show

By Heather Chalmers Dairy cattle will be absent from the Ashburton A&P Show for the second year in a row because of the risk of cattle disease mycoplasma bovis.

Entries are now open for the 142nd show, being held on November 1 and 2.

Ashburton A&P Association president David Butterick said the cattle committee had decided not to show animals again this year because of the threat of transmitting the disease.

This also impacted on children’s calf classes, but pet lamb classes were available.

Butterick has chosen Seeds of Mid Canterbury as the show theme, with a marquee to showcase the region’s arable industry.

“Some people think we are all dairy, but Mid Canterbury has a big seed production industry.

“There is also quite an infrastructure around the industry, including seed companies and seed dressing plants which employ quite a few people.”

A mixed cropping farmer at Lauriston, Butterick grows wheat, barley, peas, grass seed, clover and radish and Asian brassica seed crops.

He also runs sheep, dairy heifers and steers for Five Star Beef, as well as leasing ground to a seed potato grower.

While not an exhibitor himself, he has

never missed a show, and has been a volunteer, particularly in the sheep pens, for the past 25 years.

After a change of layout two years ago to ease congestion, no major changes were planned for this year’s show.

“We are hoping for plenty of entries, some good weather and an enjoyable couple of days,” Butterick said.

Exhibitor entries close on September 27, with showjumping closing on October 17.

Entry is on the day of competition for floral art, cut flowers, shearing and tiny tots.

Exhibitors are encouraged to enter online at www.showdayonline.com, or via the link on the www.ashburtonshow.co.nz website.

Those who prefer to register their entries at the showgrounds in person can do so later in September.

The secretary’s office under the grandstand will be open September 25 to 26, 1pm to 5pm and on September 27, 9am to 5pm.

Association secretary Lucille Brown said there were always some alterations to the show schedule, particularly in the home industries classes, and new rules, especially in the equestrian classes.

“There are lots of entries coming in. Of the about 120 trade sites, about half are already booked.

“Some come every year, but we always have some new people wanting trade sites.”

Horticulture’s hand-brake NZME Horticulture has always thrived in New Zealand, producing some of the world’s best kiwifruit, apples, avocados, tomatoes, root crops, citrus and more.

But the industry says it is experiencing a seismic shift in terms of production, technology and the necessary skills required.

And it says the labour force – or lack thereof – has become the single biggest hand-brake to industry growth.

“You probably can’t have a conversation with any horticultural producer in the world and not talk about labour,” says Nikki Johnson, chief executive of kiwifruit growers group NZKGI. “It’s a widespread issue across all crops and all countries.”

Kiwifruit is one of New Zealand’s most visible industries struggling to combat a major labour shortage, and work is now being done year-round to attract staff for the autumn/winter harvest.

The industry says its revenue is expected to increase significantly to reach $4 billion by 2027, by which time an extra 7000 seasonal workers (in comparison to 2017 numbers) will be required to get fruit off the vines. Across the country, fruit and vegetable growers, packhouses, exporters and marketing companies are all looking for ways to raise the profile of horticulture and change public perceptions about what these jobs entail.

Jerry Prendergast, president of United Fresh (New Zealand’s only pan-produce industry organisation), said the horticultural game had changed but people were largely unaware of the career opportunities that now existed.

Prendergast said farms and orchards

across the board were installing better systems and equipment to become more efficient, sustainable and profitable.

This created the need for an educated, highly-skilled, tech-savvy workforce with people and management skills.

“It’s about investing in technology and equipment ... The future of our workforce is having people who are able to manage, operate and service that type of machinery, and know-how to grow.

“Sustainability requires a greater skillset in terms of management also. It’s really quite a change and it’s an exciting time for people to be entering the industry.”

Prendergast said there are plenty of opportunities for people to prove themselves, take on areas of responsibility and quickly rise through the ranks of any branch of the fresh produce industry.

Large growers such as Nelson-based JS Ewers are running their own in-house graduate programmes to ensure they develop the next generation of leaders with the necessary skills to help the business succeed.

“We need to change how we look at our labour workforce issue and be far more open to where the opportunities are,” Prendergast said.

New Zealand’s grower base is also ageing, creating plenty of room for young people to enter the industry now and climb the corporate ladder in the coming decade.

“Automation is the future but there’s room for multiple labour workforces within that. There’s huge opportunities for a skilled labour force who are required to operate the equipment and to have the management skills to run the business. It’s not Cyril the farmer and three blokes doing the job anymore. These are big growing operations that require serious skill sets now.”

New grass development makes good progress AgResearch principal scientist Dr Greg Bryan recently returned from the United States where the Crown Research Institute is conducting field trials of the genetically modified High Metabolisable Energy (HME) ryegrass.

New Zealand forage scientists have been conducting experiments to find out whether this new potentially environmentally-sustainable grass – one that strikes a balance between reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, greater tolerance to drought and farm productivity – will perform in the field in a similar way to how it performs in controlled environment studies.

“Our ryegrass research has generated high levels of public and scientific interest here in New Zealand and overseas and now is a good time to provide an update on the progress we are making,” Dr Bryan said.

“The HME ryegrass has performed well in controlled growing conditions and I’ve recently returned from the United States where we are growing the plants in field trials in competition with one-another, just as they would in pasture and the plants are doing well.

“We’re breeding the best novel traits into ryegrass cultivars that will best suit New Zealand growing conditions and we’re also introducing genes into the plants that have simpler genetic patterns that will make future breeding programmes easier.

“The ultimate goal of the United States phase of the research is to conduct realistic, rather than simulated, animal nutrition studies so we can evaluate whether the grass might have the potential environmental benefits, such as reduced methane emissions and reduced nitrogen excretion, that our modelling suggests it will.”

While the results have been encouraging, Dr Bryan issued a note of caution.

“This is complex long-term research and we are working on a species with challenging genetics.

It takes several years to breed the HME trait into elite ryegrass varieties currently used by farmers and, very importantly, to test performance every step of the way.”

“It’s important to stress that the forecast environmental benefits associated with the grass need to be supported by rigorous research. We have a good understanding of the potential benefits of the grass because of our institutional expertise in animal nutrition, from animal nutrition models, and from the biochemical analysis of the grasses in in vitro (test tube) studies.

“Eventually, we will need to seek regulatory approval for HME ryegrass to be grown here in New Zealand for livestock grazing trials. We need to test in New Zealand conditions using New

DairyNZ is investing farmers’ levies alongside AgResearch to support the trials in the US. Dr Bruce Thorrold of DairyNZ said: “Dairy farmers are looking for new ways to reduce their environmental footprint and improve productivity. The science done

by AgResearch to develop these plants is world-leading and we’re investing to see how these plants perform in the field and test their potential value for our farmers.

“While there is a long way to go,

we’re encouraged by the results to date.”

AgResearch, in support of this project and a number of other forage-related research initiatives, is also investing in new state-of-theart glasshouse facilities on our Grasslands campus in Palmerston North.

The glasshouses, designed to precise performance specifications and biosecurity standards, will be used to research novel ryegrass, clover, endophytes and many other forage-related species.

Dr Richard Scott, science team leader for the plant biotechnology

team, said the glasshouses have sophisticated climate control and irrigation technology.

“But the big game-changer for us is that their design will allow us to grow plants that produce higher quantities of high-quality seed.

“This new facility is very important for the HME ryegrass programme as all seed used in the United States trials is produced here in these contained glasshouses at Palmerston North and we will need kilograms of seed to plant enough ryegrass to perform meaningful animal nutrition studies.”

Up to a dozen scientists from

two teams – plant biotechnology and plant-microbe interactions – will be conducting various experiments in the glasshouses.

“A diverse range of scientists can work together there, including PhD students, so we are expecting to see even greater collaboration between teams, research institutes, universities and co-funders.

“We also know this new facility will enable us to increase the scope and pace of both our field trials and the fundamental research programmes into understanding the mechanisms underlying the higher growth rates observed in the HME ryegrass.”

Orr: Take advantage of cheap finance

Reserve Bank governor Adrian Orr wants businesses and government to take advantage of low interest rates and invest in longterm projects, but says savers may need to re-think relying on low-risk term deposits.

“Businesses and governments should be re-assessing their hurdle rates on their investment projects. Low and stable global interest rates mean that what was once costly may now be a sound investment for the future,” he said in a comment published on the Reserve Bank’s website after attending the annual central bankers’ gathering at Jackson Hole in Wyoming.

He reiterated that monetary policy remains as effective as ever and “for small open economies like New Zealand, the exchange rate plays a significant additional role in competitiveness”.

The kiwi recently traded at 63.60 US cents, down around 5 per cent since the beginning of the year.

RBNZ data show New Zealand households held $180.9 billion in deposits at March 31, of which $177.98 billion was with banks.

New Zealand’s central bank cut the official cash rate by 50 basis points earlier this month to a record low 1 per cent due to an expected decline in trading partner growth, lower New Zealand inflation expectations, and a global swing to lower interest rates, said Orr. The rate cut also “reflected the ongoing funk global and domestic business confidence is in”.

He said, however, central banks cannot operate alone.

Monetary policy “has its limitations and needs to be partnered with broader fiscal and structural economic policy – the domain of the government of the day,” he said.

Likewise, business people need to consider a much longer-term horizon when investing.

Orr said the central bank understands that lower interest rates do not remove global political uncertainty “but they do offer greater certainty on the financial and investment front”.

Parker blocks Coast hydro proposal

A 20-megawatt hydro scheme on the West Coast has been blocked by Environment Minister David Parker due to its impact on the pristine and outstanding nature of the Morgan Gorge.

The $100 million development, proposed by Greymouth-based Westpower, had the support of the Department of Conservation, which spent more than two years working with the company on its proposal.

In September, 2016, the department recommended the granting of a 49-year concession, leases and easements for the development which would draw water from above the Morgan Gorge in the Waitaha River, through a 1.5km tunnel, into a power station and back into the river downstream.

But Parker, who inherited the issue in February, 2018, after Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage declared a conflict of interest, rejected the plan. While he believed most of the impacts on plant and wildlife in the area could be managed, he considered the gorge itself and its wild nature to be an outstanding natural feature.

“I do not believe modifying the flow is appropriate, even if it were possible to move the location of the inlet structure to below the entrance of Morgan Gorge,” he said in the 18-page decision.

“On my assessment, there are no adequate or reasonable methods for remedying, avoiding or mitigating the adverse effects of the activity on the natural character of the environment or the associated adverse effects on the intrinsic value of the area and on the appreciation and recreational enjoyment of the area by the public.”

Westpower believed the run-ofriver scheme could deliver about 120 GWh of power annually – enough to meet almost a quarter of the region’s demand. The proposal, along with the 7.6 MW Amethyst hydro plant the company commissioned on DOC land at Hari Hari in 2013, was developed to improve security of supply in southern Westland, particularly in the event of a transmission failure into the region.

Backers included Te Runanga o Ngati Waewae and Te Runanga o Makaawhio. The West Coast Tai Poutini Conservation Board also had no objection to the scheme.

But the project was the subject of a concerted campaign by the kayaking community and other environmental groups, including Sage’s Green Party. They argued there was no justification for additional power generation on the West Coast and that the Morgan Gorge warranted special protection from development, even though only expert kayakers can use it in its natural state.

Westpower chairman Mike Newcombe said the company is “utterly stunned” by the rejection.

“We put up a proposal that ticks all the boxes: renewable, sustainable energy, long-term regional economic development boost, careful environmental stewardship – and yet it was declined. It is an alarming decision not just for the coast but for regional New Zealand,” he said in a statement.

“We will be carefully reviewing the detail of the decision,” he said.

“It makes no sense – not least because of the Government’s stated intention to be 100 per cent renewable in energy by 2035 – 15 years – and its commitment to climate change.”

In return for the concession, Westpower would have paid DOC a market fee set at 6 per cent of gross revenue annually. The company had also undertaken to shut the intakes so that kayaking events could still be held in the gorge on a set number of days annually.

browned all over. Transfer to a roasting dish (bone side down) and roast in the oven for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, reduce the oven temperature to 160°C and continue to cook for 20 minutes per 500g for medium (or 15 minutes per 500g for rare). Remove from the oven, cover loosely with foil and rest for 20-30 minutes before carving across the grain.

■■ Shake the shallots with the cornflour in a small bag to coat. Heat the oil in a small saucepan over a medium-high heat. Add the shallots and cook for 5-10 minutes until they are golden brown and crispy, stirring occasionally.

Drain on paper towels and sprinkle with a pinch of salt.

■■ While the meat is cooking, place the potatoes in a pot of cold salted water. Bring to the boil, then immediately reduce to a gentle simmer and cook until the potatoes are tender. Drain, then place back over a low heat for a minute or so to dry out any remain-

ing moisture. Mash the potatoes or pass through a potato ricer or sieve. Stir in the butter and cheese using a wooden spoon then add chives. Season if required.

■■ To make the jus, discard any excess fat from the roasting dish, place the dish on the stovetop over a medium-high heat, add the red wine and bring to the boil for 30 seconds. Reduce the heat and simmer until reduced by two-thirds, scraping the bottom to add flavour. Add the stock and simmer for another few minutes.

Whisk through the butter and sugar and pour into a jug.

■■ Spoon mounds of potato on to serving plates. Slice the rested meat and place a slice or two on top of the potato. Drizzle the beef with jus, sprinkle with shallots and serve with a side of seasonal vegetables or a salad.

Allenton Croquet Club The monthly meeting of the Allenton Croquet Club was held on Wednesday, August 21.

President Ann Sunbeam welcomed 17 members.

Ashburton Golf Club At long last a game of golf with the sun on your back, a big crowd turned up on Saturday, many hoping to make a big push to get themselves into the club champs grading, and snaffle themselves a place in the matchplay stages.

David Fisher led the way with a wonderful round of 82 playing off 15 handicap finishing with a superb net 67, to pip Ian Rive on 69.

The Patterson Trophy for the two best gross scores through qualifying and top seeding goes to Jeff Hewitt with a combined score of 142, well done Jeff, he will take some beating this year.

The Captain’s Trophy for the two best nett scores through qualifying ends in a tie this year with both Jeff Williamson and Ron Carlson scoring a nett 135.

Well done to all qualifiers, and we will have a look at the draw in-depth next week because there are some cracking games to look forward to.

This Saturday Matt is holding one of his Pro Shop days incorporating the Don Houghton trophy, this is a team’s Irish Stableford, everyone welcome, $10 entry, loads of prizes. Karen and Neville Bensdorp and Richard Browne won this event in a close fought game winning 13 12. Jan Guilford, Marion Harrison and Ron Paterson from Papanui were runners-up in the Bowl.

We had three players take part in the South Island Triples in Caversham last weekend. Jan Guilford, Marion Harrison, and Mavis Thompson (Timaru) won this event. Third equal were Karen Bensdorp, Suitima Paijit (Christchurch) and Nadine Simpson (Caversham).

We have played the first round of the Interclub competition at Papanui taking with us four experienced players and two newer ones and I am pleased to say that all players won at least one game.

The next round is at Ascot on the first Tuesday of September.

Lion Trevor Andrews outlined planned social events and excursions including a proposed trip to Cromwell Lions Club and Lion David Horrell gave a report on the progress on the repairs and painting of the Sexton’s Cottage at the cemetery. Treasurer Peter O’Neill explained the new format with regards payment of dues and meals.

A defibrillator was presented to Tuarangi Home for their use in case of medical emergencies. Raffles were drawn and Tailtwister Lion Robert Spencer extracted fines from members for misdemeanours occurring during the month.

The meeting closed with the singing of Now is the Hour as the club is moving from MSA to Hotel Ashburton for their meetings.

The Craft Group will meet at the home of Edith Paterson on Monday, September 9.

Cavendish Club Drama Circle We started our afternoon off with a humorous poem by Roald Dahl entitled The Three Little Pigs read by Jean.

The sketch Romeo and Juliet was performed by Lynne, Betsy, Ruth and Judith, introduced by Betty, a previously unknown work of the Bard.

Joan read two amusing pieces entitled Essex Super Six, Life Begins at 80.

A sketch, Yellow in The Autumn Sunlight was presented to us by Betty and Joan, Judith then read a beautiful poem written by her Granddaughter when she was nine for Judith’s birthday.

Our afternoon’s entertainment ended with an Irish Blessing then our usual enjoyable cuppa and a chat.

Travel Club

Mr Alastair Freeborn, an Irish dairy farmer from Donegal came to New Zealand for one year working on dairy farms spoke of his love of farming, animals, our country and people.

Deciding to stay, years later and very hard work was rewarded with buying a farm in Ashburton where he met his wife.

Ill health changed his life leaving him unable to work. Still able to drive he enjoys doing voluntary work finding it very rewarding.

Vice President’s Choice Friday August 16 There was good attendance at the August 16 meeting of the Cavendish Club, this being Vice President’s Choice Day. Members were given a very enlightening talk by April Morden, who is charge of Collections at the Ashburton Museum.

April spoke of her role at the Museum and the fact that they are custodians of thousands of items held in their storerooms.

Working in a smaller country town is a great help to her in that residents have so many connections to the local history and someone always can supply information on various topics, which April really appreciates.

April also spoke of her time spent in Kazakhstan where she attended the local university and travelled widely to neighbouring countries such as Georgia etc.

She found that general services, such as health, dentistry and education were more affordable than here in NZ. April was thanked than presented with a gift for her very interesting presentation.

Plains Rotary Club President Philip welcomed a good number of members, partners and guests to our weekly meeting.

He also welcomed guest speaker Hamish Riach.

Philip advised that he attended the Life Education Trust Annual Dinner and presented a cheque for $2000 to the trust.

We have been allocated five berths on the Spirit of Adventure and are currently seeking applications to fill the vacancies from both Ashburton College and Mount Hutt College.

Firewood for the raffle prize at the Boulevard Day is all arranged and members are asked to help with selling tickets on the day.

Proceeds will be donated to The Women’s Refuge.

Sergeant conducted a humorous and lively fines session.

The club has been advised dates for the very popular Rotary Youth Leadership Awards course being held in January 2020 in Christchurch. Applications are being called for.

Russell Anstiss introduced guest speaker Hamish Riach, Ashburton District Council CEO and former Crusaders CEO. Hamish talked about his career so far which included time in the brewery and newspaper industries.

He started his local body career at Christchurch City Council in various lower level roles before moves to Manawatu, Mackenzie and Selwyn Districts.

This culminated in being the CEO for Selwyn District Council for two years before joining the Crusaders rugby Franchise as CEO, a position he held for 17 years.

During this time he oversaw the most successful super rugby franchise so far in the competition’s history. His leadership style is to be inclusive, consultative, collaborative, and transparent and show empathy to all and be decisive.

He sees his major emphasis at council progressing major projects, a second bridge, library and civic centre development, Art Gallery/Heritage Centre repair. A wastewater river crossing and pump station, CBD redevelopment.

A great presentation and thank you Hamish for sharing your life story so far.

Next week, September 4, will be the first meeting at our new venue which is the MSA bowling club clubrooms on Racecourse Road which will feature the junior speech contest, a great night is in store.

McIlroy’s staggering pay – $8000 a shot!

NZME Rory McIlroy’s lucrative 2019 season saw him earn almost $8000 a shot.

On Monday McIlroy surged past Brooks Koepka and delivered a clutch par putt when he needed it to win the FedEx Cup and the $US15 million ($NZ23m) prize, the biggest payout in golf history.

McIlroy played 19 events on the PGA Tour with three victories and a second placing. He missed the cut in just two events, one of which was the Open Championship in his home country where he opened with a 79, his worst round of the year.

The victory at the Tour Championship and FedEx Cup title took his career earnings to $NZ76.5m in 168 events, more than $450k an event since joining the PGA Tour in 2007. The standard payment to a caddie is 10 per cent of your earnings, which would mean McIlroy’s bagman Harry Diamond would earn $3.8m this year – more than former number one Jordan Spieth.

A year ago he was an overlooked bystander as Tiger Woods celebrated the missing piece of his comeback by winning the Tour Championship.

He joined Woods as the only players to win the FedEx Cup twice since it began in 2007.

Justin Thomas was the No. 1 seed and started at 10-under par before a shot was hit. McIlroy was the No. 5 seed and started at 5 under.

He finished at 18 under in the FedEx Cup finale. His actual score was 13-under 267, better than anyone else in the 30-man field.

It will boost him to No. 2 in the world behind Koepka.

CLUB NEWS – continued RSA Women’s Section President Colleen Hands welcomed members on Thursday, August 22.

Run and Walk Ashburton Our planned Methven trip on Saturday August 17 was cancelled due to sleety showers and snow flurries.

Instead, a group of 10 walked and ran around the sheltered streets in Ashburton achieving varying distances before returning to the warmth of Robert Harris Café for afternoon tea.

A further four travelled to Governors Bay for the 58th annual Road Race through to Lyttelton.

Prior to race start it wasn’t looking promising with steady rain falling, however this magically stopped throughout the race although conditions were cold.

A handicap start depending on your estimated finish time had competitors crossing the finish line within a short

time frame of one another.

Everyone seemed happy with their times achieved.

Quite a different story on Saturday, August 24, the weather was mild with the sun shining and blue sky.

Ashlea Mulligan couldn’t make the previous weekend road race and the chance to break 43 minutes for 10km, so she and Joe Ford made this happen on Saturday morning.

To do this they needed to run 4.18 per km. A few ups and downs slightly per km but with the last km at 4.10 pace Ashlea smashed it running 42.45. A new PB. Well done Ashlea.

Thanks also to Angel Spooner for being there for the first 4km too!

Come the afternoon 15 walkers and three runners met at Wakanui School Hall. The walkers completed a 7km block and the runners a 15km loop. Everyone enjoyed a stunning view of the snowcapped mountains. A hearty afternoon tea followed and was appreciated by all.

Our Wednesday evening walkers need to be recognised for their dedication throughout winter, consistently meeting every week.

Accompanied by a cool brisk wind, six members this week accomplished their town route – all agree they are enjoying the evenings getting a little lighter.

Winchmore Branch Rural Women Our August meeting was held at the hall and the title we gave the evening was “Celebrating nearly the end of winter”.

Twenty-three members gathered in our newly refurbished supper room and kitchen and the committee provided a substantial two-course meal for those in attendance.

The evening began with refreshments as members gathered and there was

much chatter as everyone caught up again for another monthly meeting.

After our delicious first course the monthly business was conducted. It was announced that the branch had been awarded the Reddicliffe Trophy at the Provincial AGM for the most new members.

We had much pleasure during the meeting nominating Barbara Busch a longtime supporter of our activities as a new member of the branch.

Details of our November Bus trip to Dot’s Castle were explained and enough members and friends are so keen we needed a 40 seater bus, we look forward to this, the tour and our meal served in the Castle.

The meeting continued with our Treasurer presenting her 20th Annual Report to the branch Margaret Kelk (right) has faithfully served the branch since 1999 and seen the branch through many large fund-raising events and kept all our financial affairs in order.

Much to her absolute surprise the branch had much pleasure is awarding Margaret Kelk Life Membership of the Winchmore Branch of Rural Women NZ, President Elsa Hydes made the presentation and Ngaire Brown gave a bouquet of flowers.

Another tradition of the branch is for members to work away and make Peggy Squares these are put together beautifully by Gwenda Hansen and given to members on a significant birthday. Elsa Hydes had much delight in presenting a knee rug to Trish Small another valued member of the branch.

The evening concluded with serving of desserts and coffee/tea with those attending continuing to enjoy each other’s company.

Our next meeting will be held at the hall on September 18 at 7.30pm.

Strong showing at world champs Ashburton’s two international representatives at the World Waterski Championships in Malaysia have returned home boasting really strong and positive results.

Brothers, Hugh and George Donaldson returned from overseas last week having competed with distinction as part of the Kiwi contingent in Malaysia for the championships who came home with an 11th placing overall – a thrilling result according to team manager, Janeen Donaldson.

The championships saw 167 skiers from 33 different countries in action over the course of the six days at the Putrajaya Marina.

“Putrajaya was an absolutely stunning stadium venue, though skiers knew the water conditions would be challenging across the large lake,” Donaldson said.

The hope from the two Ashburton lads was for some big scores after recent efforts and while initially disappointed due to a cross trail wind striking during their time to shine, Hugh managed New Zealand’s top score of 48.9 metres while George wasn’t far behind with 48.1 metres.

The biggest result and highlight for the Kiwi team came from Jaime Metcalfe who won the bronze medal.

Ranked fourth in Open Women’s Slalom going into the tournament, after prelims Metcalfe was sixth-equal going into the final and put up a score of 1-10.75m for the top skiers to chase.

Metcalfe became the first ever New Zealand woman to win a medal in the Open World Championships, the last Kiwi medal was won in Russia 2011.

Donaldson said that the experience for the whole New Zealand team was remarkable.

“Being part of the top world event is just so inspiring for our skiers, and I’m sure they’d all love to be living on a lake and skiing for university teams in Florida, as many do,” she said.

The Warriors look set for another miserable run

The familiar Warriors late season fade appears to be on again.

Since the successful 2011 campaign – where the Auckland club reached the grand final – they have traditionally hit the skids during the final third of the season, after the State of Origin period.

During that spell they have averaged a 25 per cent win ratio in their final eight game stretch of each campaign.

After successive heavy losses against the Roosters and Sharks, the portents aren’t good for the reminder of the season, where they face the Rabbitohs (fifth) and Raiders (third).

After a promising period through most of June and July, the Warriors have faltered badly in August, with the poor performances against the Raiders (4612), Roosters (42-6) and Sharks (42-16).

With the exception of the win over Manly in round 21, the team has struggled to step up against the big guns, after a decent run against mostly middleweight teams.

While it was a tough stretch with plenty of travel and some bemusing refereeing calls, the victo-

ries included wins over the hapless Titans and the Knights team missing seven front line players, including their Origin stars.

Since then, aside from the Sea Eagles game, the Warriors haven’t been in the contests, but coach Stephen Kearney disputes that the earlier positive run had creat-

ed an illusion of their true ability.

“I don’t know if it was a false sense, we had to endure and work pretty hard through that block and four of those matches on the road,” said Kearney. “All of them were pretty tight, exerting a lot of physical and mental energy and circumstances drained even more mental energy.”

But Kearney conceded that the team has struggled with the tougher opponents.

“No doubt, [we’ve been] up against some quality opposition and the truth is we aren’t where we need to be,” said Kearney.

“We are where we are because we haven’t been good enough.

What does that come down to?

Bit of game management, bit of execution at certain times, that’s something we need to look to improve and keep pushing.”

The coach also admitted that in three of the last four weeks the defensive effort has been “totally unacceptable”, prompting a renewed focus on defence this week.

He was reluctant to make personnel changes, keeping faith with the players that got the job done against the Sea Eagles three weeks ago.

The only major switch has been the demotion of Chanel Harris-Tavita, back to a bench utility role, which Kearney said was due to Kodi Nikorima being back to full fitness.

Kearney also said that his public dispute with Cameron George is fully resolved (“it’s been put to bed, all sorted”). He was unaware of how the CEO’s comments – which criticised the effort of the playing group, among other things – had been received by the squad, but said his relationship with George was one of mutual respect.

“I understand where Cam is coming from, he is very passionate about our footy club and he wants us to improve and be better,” said Kearney. “Cameron tells it how it is sometimes and that’s how we both operate.”

The Warriors have their captain’s run today, with halfback Blake Green (knee strain) needing to prove his fitness, after sitting out the contact sessions on Tuesday. Kearney said there were no other injury concerns among those listed to play.

“Probably more the spirit that is a bit dented,” lamented Kearney.

“That’s our biggest injury.”

Parker set for October bout NZME

Frustration for Joseph Parker’s camp as he heads out to the United States for a training camp ahead of his next bout.

A fight against Dereck Chisora is all but set for October 26 in London, which gives Parker nine weeks to prepare.

However the process has been less than satisfactory for Parker’s camp, which includes a recent offer they were forced to turn down.

The 26-2 Parker has had just one fight in 2019, a TKO of Australian Alex Leapai in Providence in June.

Chisora has a 31-9 record with victories over Senad Gashi and Artur Szpilka this year.

“It’s nearly there,” Parker said before flying to Las Vegas.

“The only frustrating thing for the last four or five weeks is that it’s been very hard to communicate with them. We’re just waiting for the contract to be sent and signed,” he added.

Parker’s promoter David Higgins says it’s been a bit shambolic.

“There’s been a lot of talk for the past year or so about Chisora v Parker. That fight fell over last April because they ran the time down. This time it’s been similarly frustrating. It’s now pretty tight but we’ve finally had something formal in writing.”

Junior boys come out on top The Ashburton College Junior A Boys basketball team won their Mid-Division Final last Saturday.

After putting on a display that was a great reflection on how much they have improved over the season, the boys ran away with the win 95-62 over their

Cashmere counterparts.

A large crowd of supporters for both teams were treated to a free flowing game that saw the lead at only 14 at halftime, but the team then stuck to the plan and drew away.

Almost back to full strength,

with two boys out for the final, across the board everyone stood up and played some fantastic team basketball.

Applying some of the defensive tactics discussed during the week and shutting down Cashmere’s live-wire guard, the boys

were able to transition quickly and push the ball for some fast offensive scoring.

And while the whole team were awesome, live-wire guard, Jamie Reid, had a game to remember finishing with 51 points.

Neesham: ‘It took me a month to get over defeat’

A double-whammy for Webers

NZME Black Cap Jimmy Neesham still gets constantly reminded about the heartbreaking defeat at the Cricket World Cup final.

It’s been over a month since England triumphed over New Zealand in the World Cup final thanks to the smallest of margins – the now infamous boundary tiebreaker.

For Neesham, one of the Black Caps’ stars during the tied Super Over, it has taken quite a while to get over the loss.

“People are definitely comfortable talking about it,” Neesham said. “That was never a problem. People were comfortable talking about it about four hours after it finished. It took me probably a month to sort of get over it and be able to joke about it.

“It’s one of those things, you sort of wake up the next morning and you look at the ceiling and you sort of go ‘I can’t believe that actually happened’ and then you do that the next morning and then you do that for about four weeks and eventually you get a bit sick of waking up like that. You sort of go off and move on.”

After last month’s final, Neesham took to Twitter to jokingly warn off children from sport because of the emotional agony it can cause.

“Kids, don’t take up sport. Take up baking or something. Die at 60 really fat and

happy,” he wrote on Twitter.

The 28-year-old all-rounder is wellknown for his hilarious social media presence and acerbic wit, but after the final he also expressed just how devastating the defeat at Lord’s was.

“That hurts,” he wrote in another tweet.

“Hopefully there’s a day or two over the next decade where I don’t think about that last half hour. Congratulations @ ECB_cricket , well deserved.”

While he’s had some time off cricket to reflect and heal after the World Cup, some of his teammates have been right back into action with the test side in Sri Lanka – something Neesham doesn’t envy.

“Obviously with other cricket going on as well it was a benefit to me. I don’t really know how the guys over in Sri Lanka prepared for a test series during that period because I certainly wasn’t really in the mood to be hitting balls or bowling or that sorts of stuff they would’ve had to be doing. But there’s plenty of water under the bridge now and we’ll look to move on.”

But when it comes to jokes about boundaries and tiebreakers, Neesham expects them to keep coming for years, even decades into the future.

“I’ll be playing a game of table tennis in 2050 and we’ll get to deuce and the person in the next table will probably [joke about boundaries].”

NZME Ann and Neil Weber had booked their flights and accommodation to the Rugby World Cup in Japan last year so it became a double-whammy for them when son Brad was named in the 31-member All Blacks squad yesterday.

“We’ve got a big bonus that he’s [in the squad],” Neil Weber said of Brad who was named alongside fellow Hawke’s Bay Magpie Brodie Retallick and former Lindisfarne College pupil George Bridge. “[He] had a big Super [Rugby] season

to put his best foot forward and, yeah, dreams come true,” Neil said. “He’s a Hawke’s Bay All Black so that’s pretty cool.”

The father who works in a port-based industry, was travelling with his Aussie boss in Napier yesterday.

“I was a bit nervous this morning so the drive down killed about three hours so we got here in perfect timing, about quarter to 12,” he said.

“He’s worked very hard and has had a really good journey, if you like,” the father said.

Why Owen Franks missed cup squad

After 108 tests, Owen Franks’ tenure as the All Blacks’ incumbent tighthead prop has come to an abrupt end.

The 31-year-old was a shock omission from the All Blacks’ 31man squad to challenge for the Rugby World Cup, with Chiefs trio Nepo Laulala, Atu Moli and Angus Ta’avao joining Joe Moody and Ofa Tuungafasi in the front row stocks.

One of the most tightly contested positions in the squad, All Blacks coach Steve Hansen said it was an unsurprisingly tough decision to make.

“He is one of the great All Blacks,” Hansen said of Franks.

“He’s certainly shown true character. His professionalism on and off the field has been magnificent over the years, he’s played over 100 tests.

“Unfortunately, we as the three selectors, we believe the game requires us to have big, mobile No.1s and No.3s and in this case we just think the other guys that we’ve

named are more so than he and therefore we had to make a tough decision.”

Tuungafasi and Ta’avao, in particular, showed their ability to run the football throughout the Super Rugby season, with Tuungafasi taking the most runs of any tighthead prop in the competition.

Tuungafasi, Ta’avao and Moli can all play on both sides of the scrum, while Moody and Laulala are likely to draw starting roles at loosehead and tighthead respectively.

Hansen said the phone call to Franks to deliver the news wasn’t easy, but credited the veteran with how he handled the decision.

“Obviously he’s very disappointed, but I won’t go into details about what we said or anything, but we’re very respectful of how he coped with it and, again, it’s a mark of the man.”

The All Blacks will again be captained by Kieran Read, who will be taking part in his third Rugby World Cup, together with lock Samuel Whitelock and midfielder

Sonny Bill Williams.

Hansen said over the last couple of months the team had been working at getting their game plans sorted while the selectors had been using the games to get greater clarity around the selection of the team.

“Now we are finally in a position to put all our time, effort and thinking into what is going to be an awesome challenge to try and do something that’s never been done before – win three Rugby World Cups in a row,” he said.

It’s happened before, and will happen again, compelling figures missing World Cup selection.

Steve Hansen and All Blacks selectors Ian Foster and Grant Fox have shown their many sides in naming their 31-man squad for Japan.

Hansen has been ruthless, following the team-first mantra, by culling centurion tighthead Owen Franks at the 11th hour.

He has been empathetic in his awareness of Liam Squire’s ongoing challenges, leaving the rugged Tasman hitman on replacement duties despite the obvious temptation to rush his game-changing physical presence back in the six jersey.

Hansen also took his usual punt on rookie Luke Jacobson, the onetest Waikato blindside and former national under-20s captain, to complete the loose forward mix which now needs an enforcer to stand up and command that vacant role.

Of those to miss cut, most souls will probably feel for dynamic Hurricanes midfielder Ngani Laumape.

Franks won two World Cup titles but the latter stages of New Zealand career have been plagued by long-term Achilles and shoulder injury comebacks which robbed him of mobility, impact, strength during the past year.

Taking five props to Japan, Hansen made the difficult decision by deeming Franks does not warrant a place after he was exposed

in the recent record Perth defeat and struggled to replicate prior form this season.

While injuries may yet open the door it won’t soften the blow for Laumape to note he joins a group of other classy midfielders to suffer similar fate on the eve of rugby’s pinnacle event.

Ma’a Nonu evolved to be considered the best second five-eighths New Zealand has produced.

But back in 2007, when often used on the wing, Nonu missed World Cup selection and almost jumped for a crack at league, only to then find his true home at No. 12, starting there for next successive global successes.

Eight years later, ahead of the last World Cup, Ryan Crotty was overlooked in favour of Nonu, Conrad Smith, Sonny Bill Williams and Malakai Fekitoa.

This time it’s Crotty and Williams to have faith installed in their corner at Laumape’s expense.

Crotty will make his return from a two-month broken thumb absence for Canterbury this weekend. Providing he comes through that relatively unscathed, and probably the Tongan test the following week in Hamilton as he needs game time, Crotty’s first World Cup will be his last act before he becomes one of many to continue his career in Japan.

With young form midfielders Jack Goodhue and Anton LienertBrown locked in much earlier, the question ultimately came down to whether Williams would prove his fitness in time to push fellow specialist second-five Laumape out.

The All Blacks felt Williams did enough in the draw with the Springboks and dominant win over the Wallabies at Eden Park where he scored a try to prove his credentials.

Once again Laumape impressed with the Hurricanes this year, scoring 13 tries in 16 games and averaging four tackle breaks per outing. He has every reason to feel disappointment, frustration even after signing a two-year contract extension this season.

Laumape has crossed eight times in 13 tests, with only six of those starting appearances. In short, he has a phenomenal strikerate, and pace to burn.

The former Warrior hasn’t always looked comfortable with test rugby’s myriad of demands, and elements of his game remain a work in progress, but he often starts in experimental All Blacks teams and would undoubtedly prove lethal off the bench at the World Cup. Any other nation would snap up his punch and power from No. 12.

Williams, meanwhile, has managed 38 games over the past four years and will now attend his third World Cup, having featured in a limited capacity in 2011 and played influential hands in 2015, particularly in the opening comeback against the Pumas and the final triumph over the Wallabies at Twickenham.

With someone of Laumape’s quality excluded, four years on the All Blacks will now hope Williams can repay the faith and produce similar feats when it matters most in Japan.

The unlucky exclusions from the All Blacks With a plethora of talent available but only so many spots to fill, the All Blacks selectors were always going to have some tough cuts to make when finalising their Rugby World Cup squad.

This year, Ngani Laumape, Owen Franks, Jackson Hemopo and Vaea Fifita found themselves as Steve Hansen and the All Black selectors’ unlucky exclusions.

Ngani Laumape It’s a familiar story for the hard running Hurricanes midfielder.

Among the most dominant attacking players in the Super Rugby competition, Laumape found himself in the All Blacks’ initial squad only to miss out in the last round of cuts. The 26-year-old is unlucky to lose his spot to oft-injured stalwart Ryan Crotty, who hasn’t played a game of rugby since sustaining a thumb injury in the Crusaders’ Super Rugby semifinal win over the Hurricanes in late June.

What Hansen said: “It’s one of those positions where five doesn’t fit four and whoever we left out was going to be disappointed and probably deserved to be in the team.

“In the case of Ryan, he’s got a lot of experience with the All Blacks, he’s in the team leadership group, he’s a quality player who can play both second-five and centre, and those little things probably edged him ahead of Ngani.”

Owen Franks The veteran prop was a surprise exclusion from the 31-man squad, missing out to younger, more multi-faceted players.

Highlighting the need for big, mobile props, Hansen said the selectors felt other players were simply more suited to today’s game than Franks.

Barring an injury or surprise call up, the decision brings an end to Franks’ 108-test All Blacks career, with the 31-year-old set to continue his career in England.

Jackson Hemopo and Vaea Fifita With Hemopo and Fifita able to play in the loose forwards and at lock, their utility value would have been a big tick in the pros column – if the selectors decided not to carry four locks.

However, with Patrick Tuipulotu playing his way into the squad and Scott Barrett able to move into the loose forwards if required, another lock was surplus to requirements.

Hemopo and Fifita were the unlucky players to miss out, with Luke Jacobson securing a place in the squad.

What Hansen said: “When we decided we were going to take four locks, it came down to Jackson and Vaea contesting that fourth lock position straight out with Patrick. We saw Patrick’s performance against Australia and were really happy with how he performed. It came down to Vaea and Jackson then competing with Luke … and we just felt that Luke brought a little bit more than the other two to that position.”

Wyndspelle primed for Tarzino NZTM Otaki conditioners Johno Benner and Hollie Wynyard are pleased with Gr.1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m) contender Wyndspelle ahead of Saturday’s race.

The six-year-old entire heads fresh-up into the feature race at Hastings off the back of two trial wins and Benner believes TAB bookmakers have underestimated his charge, installing him as an $18 winning chance.

“He is a far better horse this year,” he said. “It’s hard to quantify in lengths, but we have managed to change a couple of things around with him and in my opinion he is ridiculously over the odds.

“There’s no doubt that he is a smart stallion and is a realistic winning chance.”

Wyndspelle is being targeted at the first two legs of the Bostock New Zealand Spring Racing Carnival and Benner believes he has the son of Iffraaj spot-on for his firstup assignment.

“Drawn (barrier) two is an absolute peach,” Benner said. “He is getting away a lot cleaner now.

There’s no reason why he couldn’t be fifth or sixth (in the running) and look to track what looks to be a pretty hot speed on paper.

“He will go a bottler fresh over 1400m and the second one (Gr.1 Windsor Park Plate, 1600m) is another nice target race.”

Wyndspelle will endeavour to shake off his Group One bridesmaid tag on Saturday and Benner said it is vital they get the elusive win at elite level for his future career at stud.

“With a stallion, every time you go to the races you are trying to win,” he said. “You can’t be going into these races half-cooked and just use it as a run.”

Wyndspelle will get plenty of opportunities to attain that Group One victory this spring, with Benner and Wynyard eyeing races on both sides of the Tasman with their charge.

In the midst of the shock All Blacks squad announcement for the Rugby World Cup, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has revealed her favourite All Blacks player.

In an interview with The Country, our leader was asked if she had an admiration for the All Blacks since she grew up in Morrinsville.

“Yeah, I did,” she responded. “I watched every game. I remember getting up during big tournaments that were played overseas to watch with my dad.”

She then revealed her favourite All Blacks player was former test first-five Andrew Mehrtens.

“I grew up in the Waikato so I was always a big Mooloos fan. My second team – and this is purely because of this one player – my second team was always Canterbury because of Andrew Mehrtens.

“I loved Andrew Mehrtens. He was just a player that when I was a bit younger, just had, you know, such a fantastic record but also had such an attitude.”

“That gives you a little sense of I guess the era for me, when I was watching closely.”

Busy time on the mats

It’s been a busy few weeks on the indoor bowling mats of Mid Canterbury with a number of key tournaments and championships played and some more gold stars handed out to players along the way.

Earlier this month the men’s and ladies’ singles championships were held with 22 players taking to the mats to compete in the two tournaments.

From the field of 14 players in the men’s championship it was Maurice Sunbeam who emerged on top having beaten Winston Lee in a semi-final and then accounting for Graeme Chapman, who had beaten his brother, Neil, in the other semi-final.

The ladies’ competition started with eight and four making it through to post section play. Rowena Mackenzie went on to win the title by beating Gaylene Smith.

A week later players were back

on the mats for the drawn fours championship and it was a special day for Joan Hardy who claimed his first ever championship title.

She teamed up with Geoff Laird, Winston Lee and Rod Webb and at the end of the four games of qualifying they were the only team of the eight who were competing who did enough to qualify, so were determined the winners.

Last weekend the Ladies 10s side went to Christchurch to compete in the annual 10s Chal-

lenge and did so as the defending champions but were unable to repeat their effort, finishing second in the six-team competition, beaten by Chartered Clubs.

Sunday’s Edna Ellis Championship Fours tournament turned into a golden occasion for the Mackenzie family with Rowena gaining her second gold star and daughter Laura picking up her first for five championship titles.

They joined up alongside father and husband, Ken and Graeme

Chapman to win the event, which was played as a round robin, with only six teams entering.

The quartet won all five of their matches to claim the title over Michael Lawson, John Gibbs, Ken Johnstone and Neil Chapman who finished with four wins.

Tonight will see players back on the mats at the McNally Street stadium for the annual Aggregate Shield where teams of seven are entered from clubs across the district.
