Staff members at Professionals Methven had an unsettling start to their Tuesday morning when a man walked into their office and attempted to rob it. Just one staff member was working at the real estate agency when an offender entered at around 10am, began conversing and then making threats. He then demanded “all the cash on the premises”. The staff member reported that the

man was unarmed, aged around 18-20 years, around 5’7 in height with brown facial hair. He was dressed in dark jeans, a blue hoodie with orange writing and white sneakers. It is understood that he did not make off with any money. Staff at the store shared the incident and a description of the offender on social media to encourage others to look out and stay safe, but declined to comment further on the incident.

They also reported the matter to Methven police, who were seen patrolling the town later in the day. A police spokesperson said they were made aware several hours after it was reported to have happened and they were now making inquiries. Other Methven residents took to social media to share messages of support, along with suggestions of webcams the offender may have been captured on. The Professionals office is located on the main street.

Friends want to give Nikki a new lease on life By Katie todd

Local performers are joining forces to help give life back to an Ashburton woman who had her dreams crushed and her days confined to bed by debilitating illness. A Variety Night concert is being held next month for Nikki Tyrrell, who has been seriously ill with myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) and lyme disease for the past 20 years. Through the concert, a Givealittle page and a fundraising auction night later in October, her friends and family are aiming to raise $70,000 to get her treatment from a specialist clinic in Cyprus. Jo Hyde, one of the organisers, said they had already put the word out to local businesses and received a really good response. Performers who have happily jumped on board include musical duo ToPeace and Ashburton-born singer-songwriter Liam KennedyClark, along with the Phoenix Chorus choir, two Phoenix solo acts, the Life Dance Academy, Samantha McArthur, highland dancers Charlotte and Brianna Sloper and bagpiper Hamish Sloper. The array of talent is fitting for Tyrrell who threw herself into the arts while attending Ashburton College – studying music, playing piano, flute and oboe and singing

with the Phoenix Chorus and Mid Canterbury Choir. She has also recorded her own music which will be on sale at the event. Hyde said she would encourage attendees to bring cash and have a browse.

Before being struck down with lyme and ME around her 20th birthday, Tyrrell was also a successful equestrian, age group representative netballer and Netball New Zealand zone umpire. Her illness forced her to leave Massey

University, where she was in her second year of study to become a vet. In the years since she has suffered seizures, loss of speech and paralysis episodes, crippling migraines, severe insomnia, nausea

and daily flu-like systems. She is at the end of the road for what can be medically offered in New Zealand, but the Neomed Clinic in Cyprus offers specialist treatment that could see her sent home as a new woman, her friends said. Tickets for the Variety Night concert are now available from the Ashburton Trust Event Centre at $25 a head, $12 for children under 12 and free for children 3 and under. It will be held on September 23 in the Ashburton College auditorium, starting for 6.30pm. Organisers are also on the hunt for goods or services that they can raffle or auction off in the auction night and encourage anyone to get in touch at the concert if they have an idea. Ashburton debates euthanasia bill BY KATIE TODD

Dozens gathered to share robust discussion, burning questions and personal experiences at Ashburton’s Seniors Centre on Monday night during an informative evening about the End of Life Choice Bill. The event, organised by MP for Rangitata Andrew Falloon and attended by dozens of locals, saw ACT Party Leader David Seymour explaining the case in favour and Nuk Korako, a National MP from Christchurch, speaking against. The member’s bill, sponsored by Seymour, is being considered by Parliament. It would give people with a terminal illness or grievous and irremediable condition the option of requesting assisted dying – representing a major shift in patient care, Falloon said. Seymour said the bill first came about when he was speaking to retirees at Epsom Village. He asked residents if they would consider euthanasia and saw 40 hands shoot straight into the air. “I have never seen such fast movement in a retirement village,” he said. After passing its first reading, the Justice Select Committee received a record-breaking 36,000 submissions on it, including 35,000 people who indicated they would like to speak in person. The committee is travelling New Zealand hearing from them. While Seymour maintains his bill would help those in suffering to end their lives in peace and dignity, he said people were concerned with how it would work. a terminal illness that is likely to end their life in six months or a grievous and irremediable medical condition, such as those Seymour said he had met suffering from Huntingdon’s. The person must have their eligibility criteria – and soundness of mind – checked by two doctors, or, if necessary, a third specialist psychiatrist or psychologist. The medication, taken either intravenously or orally, could then be prescribed. Korako, an Anglican parishioner and National’s spokesperson

for Maori development, introduced several concerns. “Euthanasia is a very, very foreign in te reo Maori and in Pacifica culture. “There’s a not actually a word for it in our languages … and it doesn’t have a place in our communities,” he said. In the Maori world, the process of dying is of significant importance and it is as much about bringing together the living as one, as it is sending off the dying. “It fast forwards a process intricately instilled in our culture,” he

said. He also discussed concerns around “scope shift” – the gradual adjustment of euthanasia law which has occurred in overseas jurisdictions. Children as young as 12 can now be euthanised in the Netherlands and of any age in Belgium. However, Seymour said he receives as much critique from those who think his bill is too liberal as he does from those who feel it is too conservative. For example, one member of the public put a question forward

about patients with dementia, who may want to end their life before their mind deteriorates, but also may not be of sound mind to weigh up the decision. The majority of those who asked questions at the event appeared to be in favour of the bill. The select committee is expected to finish hearing submissions around March next year, at which point the bill will return to Parliament. Seymour said he expects any law changes would not take place until late next year.

Charter schools set to stay All but perhaps one of the 13 charter schools set up by the National Government now look set to stay open in some form, after two more were approved today as special character state schools. Education Minister Chris Hipkins has announced that Middle School West Auckland and South Auckland Middle School have been approved to reopen as designated character state schools next year. The two schools, both run by Alwyn Poole’s Villa Education Trust, complained loudly when they were left out of a first batch of six charter schools that were approved as designated character schools last month. One other, Vanguard Military Academy, won its designated character approval in May, and three others, Mangere-based Te Kura Maori o Waatea and a proposed Waatea High School, and a proposed new school, Turanga Tangata Rite in Gisborne, are expected to become state-integrated schools. Only the Rise Up Academy, a mainly Pacific school in Mangere East, is still waiting for approval as a designated character state school. Poole, who started a private school in Epsom before opening his two charter schools, said he was “delighted” to be approved to run two state schools. He said the change meant his teachers would now be paid at centrally-negotiated state rates, but he hoped to “look after” them using the school operations grants.

“We are convinced that we can manage to keep a few of our key points of difference,” he said. “One is that our parents won’t pay a donation. Two, our class sizes will be restricted to 15. And we will work out ways of really looking after our staff.” Hipkins said he deferred deciding on Poole’s two charter schools in July “because more information was needed to demonstrate that they meet the legal requirements for designated character schools”. “An independent evaluator has since reviewed the schools’ planned curriculum alongside their proposed character,” he said. “As a result, I am now satisfied that the curriculum will reflect the schools’ designated character, and that their students will receive an education that is significantly different from an ordinary state school. “Accordingly, I have decided to approve the sponsor’s application. I have also appointed the Establishment Board of Trustees who will be responsible for both schools. They include members of the existing Villa Education Trust Board, to provide continuity for the schools and support their special character.” Poole said the trust had nominated five of its six trustees to sit on the new establishment board and requested permission to co-opt one other member. – NZME

Tournament for futsal in October The power of football and futsal as a tool for social development is well known. New Zealand Football is looking to harness this positively throughout the country’s diverse range of communities by introducing a new all-inclusive, fun futsal tournament and festival. New Zealand Football has joined forces with the Ashburton District Council’s Welcoming Communities Co-ordinator, Immigration New Zealand (INZ) and Mainland Football to deliver the futsal tournament and festival in October, to foster connections between established locals and new arrivals in the area. Futsal, meaning indoor football, is FIFA’s official five-a-side indoor football (soccer) game and anyone can give it a go. The event is part of INZ’s wider Welcoming Communities initiative, being piloted across the Ashburton District. It recognises that communities are healthier, happier, and more productive when newcomers are welcomed and able to participate fully in society and in the local economy. “Our district has embraced Welcoming Communities and this event embodies what Welcoming Communities is all about,” Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel said. “It’s an exciting collaboration and fantastic opportunity for our communities to embrace diversity and think about other ways we can work together to create an even more welcoming and inclusive environment and reap the benefits which newcomers and migrants offer.” The first of its kind, Ashburton District Welcoming Communities Futsal Extravaganza kicks off on Saturday, October 13, with a give-it-a-go drop-in night from 5pm to 7pm, where youth and adults can learn about futsal and enjoy informal skills and games sessions. Some of New Zealand’s most talented futsal players and coaches will be present to lend a hand. Sunday, October 14, will be a busy day with a junior skills clinic taking place from 9am to 10am, before a junior team tournament runs from 10.30am to 12pm. A youth tournament then swings into action from 1pm to 3pm, before an adult tournament starts at 3pm and runs through to 4.30pm.

Local celebrities will also take part in a match with some of the region’s and the country’s best players from 4.30pm. All members of the Ashburton District community are welcome to take part, either as participants, volunteers, business sponsors, or observers enjoying the event. The focus will be on having fun while playing the fast-paced, enjoyable game of futsal and building relationships between all involved to help recent migrants, former refugees, international students and other newcomers to the district feel welcome. All futsal activities during the event will be held at the EA Network Centre in Ashburton. There is no cost to participate. This tournament is a pilot and key learnings will be used to inform future events New Zealand Football is planning in other parts of the country. Discussions are taking place with the Western Bay of Plenty District Council and Tauranga City Council on similar soon-to-be-announced initiatives in those regions. “This is a unique and fun way to introduce people to football or futsal, which ties in with our key strategic goal of more New Zealanders playing and loving the game,” Dave Payne, chief operating officer for New Zealand Football said. “But it also demonstrates New Zealand Football’s commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion – it takes the intent behind our new diversity and inclusion plan and brings it to life in communities whilst helping Immigration New Zealand and Ashburton District Council reach their goals in the Welcoming Communities initiative. Registrations to take part in the Ashburton District Welcoming Communities Futsal Extravaganza are now open and you can sign up, either individually or as a team. Registration for activities closes on September 30. Anyone can play and no indoor football experience is necessary. You’ll need between six to 10 players per team and games will run for approximately 20 minutes. Teams can be of mixed gender and age, a mix of newcomers, locals and ethnicities, combined business, family and friend teams, and they can dress up or even support a club or country.

A second managed aquifer recharge (MAR) site in Mid Canterbury will be commissioned next month, with benefits for the Mayfield community drinking water scheme. The scheme draws its water from a bore that has gone dry in the past but a MAR site on the banks of the upper Hinds River will help recharge the underground water source that feeds it. The Hinds site is expected to raise groundwater levels in all nearby wells as well as reduce nitrate concentrations. It is a replica of the pioneering Lagmhor MAR site, which has already raised groundwater levels and reduced nitrate concentrations in its geographical area of influence. The MAR has been running for two years and the plume of clean water injected at the site has almost reached the State Highway One. Another six potential MAR sites are under investigation and the recharge method has been held up as crucial for the management of water in Mid Canterbury. Water scientists say there are still some wells showing worrying high nitrate levels, but those wells in the plume of the Lagmhor site

down through the soil to aquifers. Lowe said they were learning more about the recharge method all the time and tweaking it for local conditions. Work is under way at the Lagmhor site to drill through a layer of clay that is impeding the infiltration of water. Lowe said it was vital for decision-makers at government level to see the project’s success. The work is being eyed keenly by other districts with similar water issues. Water scientist Brett Painter said it was important one of the

next MAR sites to be developed would have beneficial effects on nitrate concentrations south of Tinwald. The Hinds site is almost completely constructed and features two recharge areas. Work in the area has included enhancing important habitat for lizards, skinks and gheckos. The MAR management team is confident the site will infiltrate a significant volume of water. It will be commissioned on September 23, with a special planting and “seed bombing”.

The Rolly Inn has been included as a proposed heritage site in the new district plan, but may not be there when the plan comes in to effect. Last week the Selwyn District Council’s District Plan Committee signed off on a preferred option report that approved the inn to be included as a heritage site. However, Rolly Inn owner Russell Lilley has plans to demolish the pub on State Highway 1 to make way for a new bar, restaurant and commercial building as well as a service station on the site – having applied for resource consent for both projects. Lilley said there was no way the building should be considered a heritage building and it was frustrating he had no say in the matter. “You get no say in it at all, but it doesn’t just happen here, it happens all over the world,” Lilley said. Originally built in 1935, Lilley said the hotel cannot be a heritage building due to the number of renovations and extensions it has had. “The building has been hacked

around that many times, I’ve done it half a dozen times myself, so there is no way it is historic.” During the district plan committee meeting, councillor Craig Watson was strongly against the Rolly Inn’s inclusion on the list for the same reasons as Lilley. “It’s been butchered from what it used to be in the 1930s and it’s not something to be proud of as a district. “The reality is it’s just not a her-

itage building,” Watson said. He argued that as a large part of the structure has been built and added on to, it would be an embarrassment to designate it as a heritage building. “We had the option to protect the original build not the bolt-ons … if anything they should not be protected because they are not original or heritage in any way.” Watson’s arguments found no support and the Inn was included

on the list of historical sites. However, the new district plan is not anticipated to be in place until at least 2020 and will not have any bearing until it is fully operative. That gives Lilley a two-year window to operate under the exiting district plan, in which the Rolly Inn is not a heritage site. approved can move forward despite its pending heritage tag. “If the resource consent is passed it will be bulldozed,” Lilley said. The Rolly Inn was one of 64 proposed heritage items that were approved to receive heritage site status – including the Sheffield Hotel and Dunsandel Store. A further 44 sites that had been nominated were not considered to meet the criteria. Included in that list was the former Hororata Hotel building, built circa 1877-86, which did not qualify for the list as the report stated that it was “still recognisable as a 19th century hotel but lacks authenticity”. A description, Lilley said, would also fit the Rolly Inn. The Kirwee Tavern was also declined. The new district plan retains 144 of the exiting heritage sites, with eight removed as they had been demolished post-earthquake, another two had already been removed, and two were no longer deemed to merit heritage status – the Rolleston Memorial Clock Tower and former St Thomas’s Anglican Church in Dunsandel.

accusations and putting a limit cap on rent increases. Nothing is expected to be set in stone for at least two years, but the proposals should bring forth some interesting debate from both sides of the fence as to the potential damage it could cause to the markets. There is no hiding from the

fact that it’s been a pretty tough few years for landlords who have had to face up, and often cough up, for changes to legislation and costs associated with various new requirements such as meth testing and the new-look requirements around legislation. While drawing an income from a property, the costs incurred can also leave a very narrow profit margin and further restrictions and capability on the part of the landlord may see a lot more properties going on the open market to be sold as opposed to being kept as investment properties. The pet situation is an inter-

esting one – so many properties listed as being available for rent come with the kicker that pets are not allowed and that it is a non-negotiable matter. But, what family – who has had their lovely cat Whiskers for 10 years – is going to honestly want to turn their back on them just to find a new home? A pet is a part of the family whether a cat, dog, mouse, bird or any other form of domestic animal. It’s a tough compromise to place on people and in some respects seems so morally wrong that it’s horrific. Yes, there are those who are out there who abuse the privi-

lege of having a pet and ruin it for others, but the poor actions of some should never be at the detriment of the majority. Both sides of the story have plenty of reasons to be cautious about the proposal by Twyford this week. For some, it could spell the end of their lives as landlords with a decision required to sell up or walk down a path that has already proven to be a tricky trek while for tenants, these new changes, while appealing, may in fact see the market dilute itself into a state where the pressure to find a home is even tougher due to a lack of availability.

A vegan food adventure T

he thriving gastronomic hub of Christchurch features some big players with queues out the door and flashy Instagram geotags, and many other shadier, hidden gems. One of the latter I have come to love is Riccarton’s Big Chicken Supermarket. Like the Kmart of the culinary world, it stocks all the ethnic groceries that you didn’t know you needed (Mi Goreng favour chips! Korean ice cream!). So when my better half David delivered the thrilling news that he had won a free selection of products from Big Chicken, I was naturally going off like a frog in a sock. Free food! Yahoo! When he told me exactly what he’d won, however, my excitement fizzled into deep discomfort. The Facebook competition was for a selection of strange meat-free meat substitutes, from “vegan smoked ham” to “ocean steaks” and “vegan smoked gluten”, all thickly wrapped in plastic and inscribed with Be Vegan, Make Peace. Veganism itself has never perturbed me as I’ll happily indulge in a teriyaki tofu don or paneer butter masala in the interests of being stingy on a night out. But

trying to craft meaty steaks out of plants is one worldly pursuit I just can’t wrap my head, or stomach, around. Nevertheless, I took my carnivorous taste-buds on an alternative gastronomic adventure and sampled three of David’s winnings. Who knew – perhaps it would be my calling. 1– Vegan seaweed scallop My dreams of serenity and harmony with Nemo and his Great Barrier Reef friends were on the line when I bit into my first option. A green and white speckled, very symmetrical, circular scallop; of suspiciously narrow girth to MPI standards. The taste was bland at first, the texture sausage-like. But then – beyond all odds, it happened. Onto my palate crept an unmistakable fishy zest. The ingredients list told me this could have likely derived from the “sea tangle extract” (I swept aside mental images of distressed fish

caught up in plastic pollution) or perhaps the “flavour”. Nevertheless, I remained about as impressed with these small curiosities as Beauden Barrett was in himself on Saturday night. My second scallop received a thorough swim in some barbecue sauce and slipped down the hatch. I swear I almost saw Dory scoot past in the pipelines and give me a fins up. Would eat again. 2 – Spicy Island Unfortunately the English section of the packet was incredibly brief and they seemed to have skipped what the product was entirely. Spicy Island contained one key ingredient, vegan chunk, which definitely sounds like an ingredient that should be proceeded by brackets explaining what it’s made of (unless anyone can point me to the local vegan chunk orchard?). It also sounds a bit like the mean name you might call someone who eats too many Spicy Islands. Fortunately, like the descriptions on the packet, my verdict on this product is also brief (initially delivered in very little English, with lots of frenzied gestures.) Smell: hot.

I’d only recommend trying this one only with a big glass of non-vegan milk. 3 – Vegan assorted vegeetable balls [sic] If consuming ones five-plusa-day was simply a matter of consuming five vegan assorted vegeeeetable balls, I’d probably be down. One – because they look like dumplings in shape and dumplings bring me even more pure, wholesome joy than knowing that sea otters hold hands when they sleep so they don’t drift apart. Two – because I could bypass the grocery section at New World and not have to go near that giant, terrifying gorilla on top of the banana stand. But within the angelic exterior of my vegan assorted vegeetable balls I discovered a scary, hairy surprise of its own. I’m not talking about the 12 additives on the ingredients list – I’m talking lava hot, squirty red goop. Suddenly they seemed less like a Hershey’s kiss and more like a bodily intrusion off Doctor Pimple Popper. From my few remaining unscorched taste-buds I detected strong notes of miso and salt. I will not be nearing this product again.

Deadly mind-games Moscow’s mind-games are becoming deadly. It has just warned-off the United States from retaliating against a chemical weapon attack in Syria. But it hasn’t happened yet. Russia’s Defence Ministry says it has evidence Syrian rebel forces are about to gas their own people in Idlib province – and put the blame at the feet of President Bashar al-Assad. So why aren’t they preventing this alleged ‘false-flag’ incident by bombing the rebels? Instead, Moscow is telling the US and its allies to back off. Russia’s claims echo previous pro-Assad chemical attacks on the city of Douma in April which left scores dead and many more permanently scarred. The US, Britain and France unleashed a series of cruise missile and air strikes against Syrian government facilities after the chemical warfare ‘red line’ was crossed. Moscow later insisted the chemicals had been deployed by Syrian rebels – disguised as White Helmet rescue workers – against their own people to provoke the action. All available evidence, however, pointed to the canisters being dropped by Syrian government aircraft and helicopters. This time, Russia appears to be attempting to head-off such overwhelming retaliation even before an attack has been made. And if it truly is a Syrian rebel attack on their own people to frame Assad, Moscow’s showing no signs of trying to

Game of Thrones back The first footage from the final season of Game of Thrones is finally here – but be warned, it provides only the tiniest glimpse. HBO dropped the little teaser as part of a broader clip promoting the network’s 2019 line-up, of which Thrones is obviously the centrepiece. The new footage is buried among a lot of shots of season seven – including a clip of Gendry swinging an axe, Daenarys and Tyrion having a pensive moment, and some dragon fire – and shows Jon Snow (Kit Harington) hugging Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) at their family home of Winterfell, while she gives someone out of shot a very shady side-eye look. Russian and Iranian-backed Syrian government forces are advancing on the region. Russian defence ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov alleges in the statement that

the jihadist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham is “preparing another provocation of the ‘use of chemical weapons’ by Syrian government forces against the peaceful population of the Idlib province.” He said the group delivered eight chlorine tanks to Jisr alShughur town in order to stage the attack and that these were later taken to a village about eight kilometres away – Kafr Zita. The statement also says a group of militants “trained in handling poisonous substances under the supervision of specialists from the private British military company ‘Oliva’” arrived in the town a day earlier.

“The militants have the task of simulating the rescue of the victims of the chemical weapons attack dressed in the clothes of the famous White Helmets,” it said. Konashenkov accused British special services of being “actively involved” in the “provocation” which will “serve as another reason for the US, the UK and France to hit Syrian government targets with air strikes.” The local council of Kafr Zita has reacted with fear – tweeting: “We appeal to international authorities to deter the (Syrian) government from using chemical and conventional weapons against the city.” - PA

Roseanne ‘not a racist’ John Goodman has revealed how he struggled with depression for a month after the Roseanne reboot was cancelled, while defending his on-screen wife over the racist tweet that got her sacked. Goodman, who played father-figure Dan Conner alongside Roseanne Barr, said he was surprised by ABC’s decision to pull the series after just nine episodes in the wake of Barr’s tweet about Valerie Jarrett. “I know, I know, for a fact that she’s not a racist,” he said.

Melania Trump body double claims A new video of Melania Trump has sparked fresh claims the US First Lady is using a body double. The footage, which shows US president Donald Trump and his wife boarding Air Force One in Columbus, Ohio, was captured on August 24. But scores of conspiracy theorists have claimed the appearance and body language of the woman in the clip is dramatically different to the “real” Mrs Trump. Sceptics quickly shared the video online, with many pointing out the woman’s hair seemed to be darker than the First Lady’s. “Not her. Not her posture, profile, poses. Andrew King, NZ Property Investors Federation executive director, said it was hard to quantify how many rented properties were being wrongly sub-let but landlords were considering adding a specific clause to ban such practices and make it even clearer that this breached the law and agreement. “If owners are in properties that are potentially more likely to be used as Airbnb accommodation, it is probably a good idea to go onto the site and others to check if their property is listed,” King advised landlords. – NZME

Profit lift for Chch international airport Christchurch International Airport lifted profit 37 per cent in 2018 and will pay more than $40 million to its Crown and council shareholders. The South Island’s major aerial gateway increased net profit to $88.7 million in the year ended June 30, from $64.6 million in 2017, it said in a statement. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation increased 6.4 per cent to $115.7 million on a 3 per cent gain in revenue to $182.6 million. Operating expenses fell 2.3 per cent to $67 million in the year and passenger numbers rose to a new high of 6.87 million, up from 6.57 million in 2017. The airport saw an 8.5 per cent increase in international visitor

arrivals in the year, and chief executive Malcolm Johns said more overseas travellers have been coming to the South Island via Australian airports in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, taking market share away from Auckland International Airport. Christchurch Airport will pay $40.4 million in dividends for the year ended June 30, up from $38.3 million in 2017. Christchurch City Council owns 75 per cent of the airport and central government 25 per cent. Property income accounted for 19 per cent of the airport’s total revenue in 2018, or about $17 million. South Auckland tenants who illegally sub-let a room in their home on global website Airbnb have been ordered to pay $1222.94 for breaching their rental agreement. Landlords say they are considering adding a new rental agreement clause to specifically ban this sort of sub-letting. Seng Lee and Serene Ong rented a home in the Auckland suburb of Dannemora from Sunrise Property Management Services but the Tenancy Tribunal said the owner “became aware through their insurance company that the tenants were operating an Airbnb business from the premises”. The owner contacted its agent, Iris Wai Lau of Sunrise, and voiced concerns, the tribunal said. “The tenants do not dispute that they had signed up with Airbnb on March 22 2018 to host guests in a room at the property. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern fronted the business community yesterday, where she confronted the spectre of falling confidence levels and announced a new advisory council to be chaired by Air New Zealand boss Christopher Luxon. Ardern, speaking at a Westpac breakfast event, said slumping business confidence “was not the elephant in the room, it’s a flashing great neon sign with giant lights and fireworks going off behind it”. The Prime Minister told the breakfast that she wanted to build a closer relationship between business and Government and was setting up an advisory council that would “provide high-level free and frank advice” on key economic issues. Luxon and Ardern will determine the full makeup of the council and its initial work programme in the coming weeks. “The council will provide a forum for business leaders to advise me and the Government and to join us in taking the lead on some

Learn to love leftovers T

here’s everything to love about leftovers, the bits and pieces that don’t make it on to the plate at dinner time. While many people happily bin that surplus food, canny cooks know that in every half cup of leftover meat, vegetables, pasta, rice or potatoes, there’s a meal in waiting. And if easy meals are not enough of an incentive, think about the money you’ll save by giving leftovers another chance. The quantity of food every person on this planet wastes every day is criminal.

Leftover vege fritters 2C cooked, chopped vegetables Salt and pepper 100g flour 1t smoked paprika 1 lemon 2T parmesan cheese, grated 1 egg 1 olive oil Marscapone, to serve Chopped coriander

Chicken noodle soup Chicken bones/carcass from roast 1t salt Pepper, to taste 2 cloves garlic, chopped 1 bay leaf 8C water 2 carrots, chopped 1 leek, thinly sliced including the green top 2 sticks celery, thinly sliced 250g dried spaghetti 2C cooked chicken, shredded Leftover gravy, if available 2 chicken stock cubes 2t mixed herbs ■ Place the chicken carcass, salt, pepper, garlic, bay leaf and water into a large pot. ■ Bring to the boil and then reduce the heat and allow it to simmer for at least 60 minutes. ■ Once the broth is ready, sieve the broth and discard the bones. ■ Return the chicken broth to the pot and add the carrots, leek, celery, spaghetti and chicken ■ Stir in leftover gravy, chicken stock cubes and mixed herbs. ■ Simmer the soup for 10–15 minutes, until the spaghetti is cooked. ■ Season the soup with salt and pepper before serving.

Fridge frittata 3C chopped, leftover vegetables (mushrooms, broccoli, potatoes etc). 8 large eggs 1/2 C milk 1/4 t black pepper 1/4 t salt 1/4 t dried rosemary or thyme 3T oil 1 small onion, diced 2T cheese of your choice ■ Preheat oven to 180°C. ■ Chop all leftover vegetables to similar sizes. ■ In a small bowl, beat the eggs and whisk in milk. Season with herbs, salt and pepper. ■ Heat oil in a large, oven-proof frying pan. ■ Cook onion and other raw ingredients until slightly soft. ■ Add the cheese and any other already cooked ingredients. ■ Pour in the egg mixture, stir and cook on medium heat until the edges peel away. ■ Bake in oven for 15 minutes until set.

■ Put the vegetables into a large bowl and season. ■ Stir through the flour, paprika, lemon zest and parmesan. ■ Whisk the egg and fold through. ■ Heat a frying pan and add enough olive to barely cover the surface. ■ Cook small spoonfuls of the fritter mixture until golden on both sides. ■ Drain on paper towels. ■ Serve the fritters with mascarpone and top with coriander.

Vege pasta sauce 2C leftover cooked vegetables 1T olive oil 3 cloves garlic, chopped Tin of chopped tomatoes Salt, pepper and chopped herbs. Cooked pasta ■ In a blender or food processor, chop or puree cooked vegetables. ■ In a skillet, warm olive oil over medium heat. ■ Add garlic and cook until fragrant, about 2 minutes. ■ Add the tin of tomatoes; bring the mixture to a boil. ■ Use a spoon to break the tomatoes into chunks; simmer 20 minutes, until sauce thickens slightly. ■ Add chopped vegetables; cook 5–10 minutes more. ■ Season with salt, pepper and herbs. ■ Toss through cooked pasta.

Noodle fritters 1C peanuts Oil, for frying 3 eggs 1t curry powder 2T flour 1/2 t salt Knob fresh ginger, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1 fresh chilli, finely chopped 1/2 red capsicum, chopped Small handful coriander 1 carrot, grated 1/4 C tofu, cubed About 150g leftover fried noodles Juice of 1 small lemon ■ Toast the peanuts in the oven or in a pan with a little oil. ■ Into a bowl, break the eggs and add the curry powder, flour and salt and beat well. ■ Add the ginger, garlic, chili, capsicum, coriander, carrot, tofu and noodles. ■ Roughly chop the toasted peanuts and throw them in, along with the juice of the lemon. ■ With a large spoon, gently stir the mixture to combine. ■ In a pan, heat some oil for frying the fritters. ■ Place large spoonfuls of the batter in the pan. ■ Cook 3 mins and turn. Cook another 3 mins. ■ Drain on paper towels and serve with a salad.

Creamy sausage pasta with caramelised onions 2T olive oil 2 onions, halved and sliced 1 garlic clove, very finely chopped 4 pork sausages, cooked, thickly sliced 100ml chicken or vegetable stock Juice of 1 lemon Cream 4T freshly-grated parmesan, to serve Salt and freshly ground black pepper Pasta ■ Gently fry the onions in olive oil for about 15 minutes until soft and beginning to caramelise. ■ Add the garlic and continue to cook for 2 minutes. ■ Add a splash of stock if it looks as if the onions are catching. ■ Cook the pasta according to the packet instructions. ■ Drain, reserving a little of the cooking water. ■ Add the sliced sausage to the onions and fry for 2-3 minutes until the cut surfaces have coloured a little. ■ Pour over the stock and cook for another 2 minutes. ■ Add lemon juice and cream. ■ Stir well to combine. ■ If the sauce looks too thick, then add a splash of the pasta cooking water. ■ Check the seasoning. ■ Add the pasta and stir well to combine, ensuring the pasta has been cooked through. ■ Serve with grated cheese.

1.3kg fillet of salmon, skin on, pin-boned, at room temperature 2T balsamic vinegar 2T olive oil 1/2 C sundried tomatoes, roughly chopped 1/4 C capers, drained 1/4 C gherkins, chopped 1/3 C Italian parsley, chopped Lemon wedges ■ Preheat oven to 200°C (180°C fan-forced). ■ Place salmon, skin-side down, in a large oven tray lined with non-stick baking paper. Drizzle with balsamic and oil, then season with salt and pepper. Roast, uncovered, for 20 minutes for medium or 30 minutes for well done. Check by poking a knife into the middle of the fillet to see the flesh – if the fish flakes easily, then it is fully cooked.

It’s a long way to the final T

he first round of any sports competition is always interesting. That’s when you get a real idea of what each team might offer in the weeks ahead, and if first impressions are anything to go by Mid Canterbury could offer something pretty good in this year’s Heartland Championship. The competition got under way with Mid Canterbury away to last year’s beaten finalists Horowhenua-Kapiti on Saturday and they came away with a win, which – although it was very, very early days – put them in pretty good stead. To win in round one, and to win away from home against a class team, was huge and showed that although Mid Canterbury had a largely fresh-faced line-up this year that featured a lot of new faces that weren’t part of the 2017 campaign, they were going to be a force to be reckoned with in 2018. Looking at the leaderboard and seeing Mid Canterbury in second spot after the first round would have given the many new players in this year’s side a huge boost in confidence with some tough games to come.

But, like coach Sean Carter said following the match, one match didn’t make a competition. They could not afford to take the foot off the gas as the Heartland Championship was one of those competitions where any team could just about beat any other team on their day. Wanganui won last year’s competition, but they were beaten by Mid Canterbury a few weeks before that in a classic, memorable match at the Ashburton Showgrounds. Meanwhile, Mid Canterbury didn’t even make the top four and finished fifth with a win in the Lochore Cup, for the next best four teams. According to the TAB, Mid Canterbury headed into this season as third favourites, paying $6.50 to take out the Meads Cup. Horowhenua-Kapiti were fifth favourites, paying $8, but playing in Foxton in the opening round it was Horowhenua-Kapiti who went into the round one match as favourites. The favourites to take it out overall were of course Wanganui – the defending champion side that every year, no matter how many players they had come

and go, seemed to be there or thereabouts in the grand scheme of things. They kicked off their 2018 campaign with a win too, but it wasn’t such good news for our nearest neighbours and old foes South Canterbury. Second favourites to take the whole thing out this season according to the TAB, they had the misfortune of drawing Wanganui in round one and the loss meant that, after round one, they were well down in the standings. They aren’t likely to stay there for long though. Just three weeks ago in Hinds, they beat Mid Canterbury in one of only two warm-up games for the Hammers before the competition got under way. While not a lot could be read into pre-season matches because they were more about ironing out creases than win-

ning, South Canterbury showed they were a strong side and one not to be taken lightly. The TAB’s fourth favourites, Buller, also lost on Saturday – to North Otago – and what that told us was that Mid Canterbury is going to have a few fights on their hands this year. Wanganui, South Canterbury, North Otago and Buller are all teams that we have drawn to play this season. We will also play West Coast and King Country – two other teams that picked up wins in round one. The only game where you’d think victory was all but assured already, would come in round six when we were to host East Coast, the Heartland Championship’s perennial strugglers who lost convincingly 75-17 to King Country in round one. We may have seen off our first big challenge of this season in the form of Horowhenua-Kapiti, but there is a hang of a lot more to come and it won’t get any easier as the season really ramps up. Let’s hope our mighty Hammers can continue on the way they started and make it all the way to the top this season.

Big week for Mannering By DaviD Skipwith It’s a week of milestones for retiring club legend Simon Mannering who will celebrate his birthday today ahead of his 300th game in Friday’s NRL clash against Canberra. The former club captain will turn 32 before bringing up the triple century of appearances in what could be his final match at Mt Smart Stadium in the final round of the regular season against the Raiders. With the Warriors spot in the upcoming playoffs already secured following Friday’s impressive win over Penrith, the club is pulling out all the stops this week to ensure a packed house is in attendance to give the champion back-rower a hero’s farewell. Artist Emily Gardner is putting the finishing touches on a huge mural of Mannering inside the ground and the club is set to roll out several initiatives to involve his legion of fans in the lead-up to game day. The tributes began yesterday with the Mt Smart groundskeepers painting ‘Mannering 300’ across the ingoals on their training field, while players and club staff will continue to grow beards in honour of his ever-present facial hair through until the end of the season. play the significance of his birthday and admitted he was humbled by all the interest, attention and tremendous support coming his way from fans and media and those within the club. A quiet dinner with his partner Anna Bensemann and the couple’s two children Zeke and Jack is on the cards this evening, while he is looking forward to catching up with the rest of his Nelsonbased family on the weekend. “I forget about birthdays these days. Ever since I turned 21 I’ve tried to forget about them,” laughed Mannering.

“[There’ll be] no cake, its game week. We’ll do something quiet with the kids. My family is pretty low-key. They’re all coming up from Nelson this weekend so I’ll see them then.” Ticket pre-sales for Friday’s match have already passed 14,000 and the club has been inundated with orders from supporters travelling from all over the country and across the Tasman to show their support for Mannering. The club’s five-time Player of Year typically tried to deflect attention from his own achievements but expressed his appreci-

ation to all the well-wishers who have backed him throughout his stellar 13-year career. “That’s really humbling and I just don’t know if I deserve all of this fanfare,” he said. “I’ve met a lot of people along the way and they’re fans of the club but they genuinely go out of their way to say ‘thanks for what you’ve done’ and I’m just doing my job. “It means a lot to some people and it’s cool if you can give people a bit of buzz in their life and they really enjoy it. “So for them to come out and travel all that way just to see a game of footy – I’m sure it’s not just for me, the boys are playing well – it’s really humbling.” As part of the club-wide pact to grow beards, Warriors coach Stephen Kearney is sporting a decent amount of facial growth while some members of the team are clearly struggling in the stubble-stakes. As the side rallies behind Mannering and the club’s push into their first finals appearance since 2011, opposition sides would be well advised to ‘fear the beard’. “I got put on the spot there and made a commitment so I’ve got to follow it through,” said Kearney. “I’m in uncomfortable territory too. Taonga Mbambo proved that he could more than keep pace with some of the best cross country runners from both Australia and New Zealand at the weekend. The Year 13 Ashburton College student was part of the New Zealand team which headed across the ditch to race in the Australian Cross Country Championships and he finished 12th. He was also the third New Zealander to cross the finish line out of a total of 82 athletes in the event held on the Sunshine Coast, and Mbambo was happy to finish so far up the field in what was his first overseas racing experience. The race was won by Murdoch McIntyre from New Zealand in a time of 20.14 minutes. Mbambo raced home in 21 minutes for the 6km course and overall he and his New Zealand team-mates finished third. They then went on to participate in a road race relay, in which they also came home third. It had been a big few months for Mbambo. Just a few days before heading to Australia, he took part in the Canterbury Road Race Championships and placed first in the under-18 men’s section in a time of 18.52 minutes. Earlier this month he was part of the Canterbury athletics team that contested the New Zealand Cross Country Championships and out of a field of 43 Mbambo was third in the men’s under-18 section, covering the 6km in 22.07 minutes. His selection for the team to head to Australia followed his sixth placing at the New Zealand secondary schools’ championships in Taupo in June. The Australian trip was the last of the cross country season for Mbambo, but there was little time to sit back and relax, with the summer athletics season just around the corner. He would now turn his attention to training for track events, where he was also a formidable opponent over the longer distances.

Pole vault star Eliza McCartney is out of the Diamond League final in Zurich on Friday. The Olympic bronze medallist damaged her left foot competing in the last leg of the DL in Birmingham on August 19 with a bad landing. It is slowly recovering, but not fast enough to have her ready for the Zurich tournament. McCartney had already withdrawn from the Beckum meet in Germany which now leaves her with just the Continental Cup teams event in Ostrava in the Czech Republic on September 8. - NZME

Under-fire Wallabies coach Michael Cheika has the full support of the Rugby Australia board and will see out his contract, according to CEO Raelene Castle. But at the same time, Castle said the governing body can’t just ignore the team’s below-par performances across the first two Bleidisloe Cup tests. New Zealand Rugby announced yesterday the Black Ferns Sevens will play France, China and England during the New Zealand leg of the World Rugby Sevens Series on January 26-27 next year. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says she would rather government funding goes to grassroots rugby than to the All Blacks. Blake Farr won gold in the 200m freestyle, silver in the 50m and 100m freestyle and bronze in the 400m freestyle. He also finished sixth in the 400m individual medley. Bree Middleton won two golds, in the 200m and 400m freestyle, and took silver in the 800m freestyle along with fourth placings in the 100m and 50m freestyle

and a fifth in the 200m individual medley. Having to swim two years above her age, Hannah King was also in fine form, coming home with a 100 per cent personal best time record, including an outstanding swim in her 800m freestyle race where she dropped 17.77 seconds off her personal best time. Also chopping a chunk of his personal best in the 50m freestyle was Mitchell Veix, who took 4.96

seconds off his previous best. Meanwhile, Bailey Tait was seventh in her 50m butterfly race and eighth in her 800m individual medley, and Alex Chapman – swimming at his first South Island championships – was 14th in the 200m breaststroke. The event was a great lead up to Short Course Nationals which would be held in Auckland in early October, which Farr and Middleton had already qualified for.

Top seed crashes out in first round upset By ElEanor Crooks Serena Williams marked her return to the US Open with victory but Simona Halep became the first women’s top seed to lose in the opening round in the Open era. Rusof in line for Group One Malaysian-born rider Shafiq Rusof has an outstanding opportunity to notch his first New Zealand Group One win when he partners high-class mare Melody Belle in Saturday’s Gr.1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m). Rusof has made a favourable impression since commencing his second stint in New Zealand in March this year. The 31-year-old is a former champion apprentice jockey in Singapore, but was not relicensed by the Singapore Turf Club at the end of 2017, along with a host of other riders. Rusof joined the likes of Manoel Nunes, Derreck David, Oscar Chavez and Syafiq Hazman on the outer as the club looked for new blood in the jockeys’ ranks.

“It’s been great to come back here and experience something different,” Rusof said. “Last season was not too bad. I had a few suspensions and I was only riding for the last couple of months of the season, but to win a Group Two on Our Abbadean (Travis Stakes) was very pleasing.” With 17 wins and a Group Two to his name last season, Rusof is keen to make the most of his opportunities this season and has already ridden three winners, including Melody Belle in the Gr.2 Foxbridge Plate (1200m). He has come full circle to the country where he honed his craft as an apprentice jockey under Mark Walker’s tutelage at Te Akau Racing.

FINAL PROPOSAL FOR REPRESENTATION ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE 2019 ELECTIONS On 23 August 2018 the Canterbury Regional Council considered submissions on its initial proposal for representation arrangements for the Council, which will apply for the local elections on 12 October 2019. The Council received 64 submissions on its proposal. 27 submissions were in favour of the Council’s proposal. 37 submissions contained objections to various elements of the proposal, as follows: • 20 submissions sought the number of councillors to be elected in the South Canterbury-Ōtuhituhi Constituency increases from 1, to 2. 18 of these submitters suggested this be done by increasing the total number of Councillors to 14, and 2 submitters suggested this be done by maintaining the total number of 13 councillors • 5 submissions sought the division of the Christchurch City area be changed from 4 constituencies to 2 Constituencies (North and South) • 1 submission sought the Councils representation arrangements be divided into ‘Canterbury Water Management Strategy Zone Committee’ boundaries with a total of 17-18 councillors • 1 submission sought Council retain appointed Commissioners for North, Mid and South Canterbury and reduce Christchurch City to 2 councillors • 10 single submissions sought variations to the proposal that supported a balance of representation across the region, and supported representation in the South Canterbury-Ōtuhituhi Constituency be increased Final proposal Having considered all of the objections, the Council resolved to adopt its initial proposal as the Council’s final proposal, subject to the following amendments: • that the number of members to be elected by the electors of the South Canterbury-Ōtuhituhi Constituency is 2, rather than 1; • that the total number of members to be elected is 14, rather than 13; • that the name of one of the constituencies is Christchurch North East-Ōrei, rather than Christchurch North-Ōrei The Council considers that the changes are appropriate for the following reasons: (i) the election of two councillors in the South Canterbury-Ōtuhituhi Constituency is necessary to provide effective representation for the communities of interest in the South Canterbury-Ōtuhituhi Constituency (ii) the increase to the total number of members from 13 to 14 councillors is a consequence of increasing to two councillors in the South Canterbury-Ōtuhituhi Constituency and provides for effective representation of communities of interest in the Canterbury region. It is also more even handed in providing 2 councillors for each and every constituency. (iii) the name change from Christchurch North-Ōrei Constituency to Christchurch North East-Ōrei Constituency is appropriate to recognise the community of interest in that constituency that identifies with the eastern area of Christchurch. The Council rejected the other matters raised in objections for the following reasons: The majority of submitters supported the proposal and sought increased representation in South Canterbury-Ōtuhituhi. The existing constituency structure is well understood by electors and the Council is satisfied that this structure and the allocation of Christchurch City into 4 constituencies will provide effective representation for distinct communities of interest. Other matters raised in objections resulted in either representation that violated communities of interest, significant deviation from section 19V, or were outside the legal boundaries of the Local Electoral Act 2001. The submissions report that includes Council’s response to every submission can be viewed on Council’s website at https://ecan.govt.nz. Therefore, the final proposal is as follows: Council representation It is proposed the Council comprise 14 members elected from 7 constituencies. The 7 constituencies reflect the following identified communities of interest: Constituency

In accordance with section 19V(2) of the Local Electoral Act 2001 the population that each councillor represents must be within the population range of 43,734 +/-10% (39,361 to 48,107). As four of the constituencies do not comply with section 19V(2) (+/-10% rule), the final proposal must be treated as an appeal under section 19V(5) of the Local Electoral Act 2001 and referred to the Local Government Commission following the appeal/objection period for determination. (i)

The proposal for 2 members in the South Canterbury-Ōtuhituhi Constituency results in over representation (a -29.90% deviation from the regional average councillor to elector ratio). In respect of the South Canterbury-Ōtuhituhi Constituency Council noted that the election of two members is necessary to provide effective representation for communities of interest taking into account: • the large land area of the South Canterbury-Ōtuhituhi Constituency being 39.84% of theCanterbury region

• the significant amount of Canterbury Regional Council work undertaken in the South Canterbury-Ōtuhituhi Constituency together with the increased focus on freshwater management, indigenous biodiversity and land management issues in the constituency which are requiring greater Councillor involvement • the diverse, relatively sparsely populated and widely spread communities that make up the South Canterbury-Ōtuhituhi Constituency • the boundaries align with territorial authority boundaries and reflect the communities of interest of the districts in the South Canterbury-Ōtuhituhi area. Consideration was given to extend the boundary from the Rangitata, North to the Rakaia however Council (and submitters) consider this violates the sense of communities of interest in the South Canterbury-Ōtuhituhi Constituency (part of Waitaki, Waimate, Mackenzie and Timaru Districts). (ii) The proposal for 2 members in the North Canterbury-Ōpukepuke Constituency results in over representation (a -13.34% deviation from the regional average councillor to elector ratio). In respect of the North Canterbury-Ōpukepuke Constituency Council noted that the election of two members is necessary to provide effective representation for communities of interest taking into account: • the large land area of the North Canterbury-Ōpukepuke Constituency being 28.5% of the Canterbury region • the significant amount of Canterbury Regional Council work undertaken in the North Canterbury-Ōpukepuke Constituency together with the increased focus on freshwater management, indigenous biodiversity, land management, and post Kaikoura Earthquake issues in the constituency which are requiring greater Councillor involvement • the diverse, relatively sparsely populated and widely spread communities that make up the North Canterbury-Ōpukepuke Constituency • the boundaries align with territorial authority boundaries and reflect the communities of interest of the districts in the North Canterbury-Ōpukepuke area.

(iii) The proposal for 2 members each in the Christchurch North East-Ōrei and Christchurch Central-Ōhoko Constituencies results in under representation (Christchurch North East-Ōrei +14.79%, and Christchurch Central-Ōhoko +18.10% deviation from the regional average councillor to elector ratio). In respect of the Christchurch North East-Ōrei and Christchurch Central-Ōhoko Constituencies Council noted the election of two members in each of these constituencies is necessary to provide effective representation for communities of interest taking into account: • prior experience in previous representation reviews has shown that moving boundaries to comply with the +/-10% rule compromised communities of interest and eroded relationships between constituents and regional councillors and also between the Regional Council and the City Council • this proposal, on the other hand, ensures that each constituency will not just be represented by 4 City Councillors (1 from each ward), but will also be represented by 2 Regional Councillors. It will provide a greater likelihood that constituents will know who represents them. It is also more even handed in providing 2 councillors for each and every constituency • this proposal which sees Christchurch City Council ward boundaries matching the Regional Councils constituency boundaries is well understood by electors, allows more cooperation between the City Councillors and Regional Councillors, and therefore effective representation • the boundaries align with territorial authority boundaries and reflect the communities of interest of the wards within the Christchurch North East-Ōrei and Christchurch Central-Ōhoko areas. Appeals and objections Any person who made a submission on the Council’s initial proposal may lodge an appeal against the Council’s final proposal. An appeal must relate to the matters raised in that person’s submission. Any person who is opposed to the Council’s final proposal may lodge an objection. Any objection must identify the matters to which the objection relates.

Tuesday was ladies’ day at the Tinwald club, and yesterday was a bisque par round for most of the ladies, but for some of the club’s nine hole players – including O’Neill – it was the first round of the club championships. Twelve players contested the club’s ladies nine hole championship title this year, while at the other end it was a two horse race for the title of the club’s top lady when it came to the 18 hole players. Only two players were entered in the club’s silver championship, so it will be a straight final between Phylis Smith and Bronwyn Flannery. Former champions charge back Andy Murray pumped his fist and then did it again, exulting as if he had just won his match. Actually, he was still one point away. But considering all the pain Murray has experienced in his hip, sprinting toward the net to chase down a drop volley and put it away was something to celebrate. Murray and Stan Wawrinka, a

pair of former US Open champions, both were winners yesterday in their return to the tournament after having to miss it last year. Wawrinka ousted No. 8 seed Grigor Dimitrov 6-3, 6-2, 7-5, while Murray eliminated James Duckworth 6-7 (5), 6-3, 7-5, 6-3. Both felt good physically, though not quite as good about their chances of contending for

the title. Murray hadn’t played in a Grand Slam tournament since Wimbledon last year, before needing hip surgery that has limited him to just eight matches this year. He said before the weekend it wasn’t realistic to think he could win this US Open, and the 2012 champion was asked after the match what would have needed

to happen for him to change his tune. “I would have been able to train and practice a lot more than what I have done. “I mean, there’s many, many things that I would have wanted to change to be considered a contender,” he said. Wawrinka has a little more reason for hope.

The 2016 champion couldn’t defend his title last year and needed two left knee surgeries, but has had some good results this summer. He also eliminated Dimitrov in the first round at Wimbledon, won a couple matches in Toronto before falling to top-ranked Rafael Nadal, and took Roger Federer to three sets in the quarter-finals in Cincinnati. - AP
