Sheep ‘worst’ vet’s ever seen A Mid Canterbury couple have been convicted of wilfully ill-treating sheep, with a veterinarian saying sheep they sent to a meatworks were the worst she has ever seen.

The couple, who have interim name suppression, were in the Ashburton District Court yesterday to face a total of eight charges, including wilful ill treatment of animals, reckless ill treatment and transporting the animals in an unfit state.

The sheep were part of a pet food op-

eration. The truck driver who transported some of the sheep to the processing plant was also charged with transporting unfit animals.

He was also granted interim name suppression.

All three were remanded to November 20 for sentencing.

The charges were brought by the Ministry for Primary Industries, which says animal mistreatment is not a good look for its products overseas.

Promoting literacy

As World Literacy Day approaches on September 8, the Ashburton Public Library is putting the efforts of Altrusa Ashburton on show.

Among many contributions to the community, the volunteer organisation has spent 43 years contributing to literacy in Ashburton’s primary and intermediate schools.

They’ve presented almost all of the primary and intermediate schools in Ashburton with copies of the reading programme Audio Visual Achievement in Literacy, Langauge and Learning (AVAILLL), to help promote reading skills among youth.

Altrusa member Janet Butterick said supporting literacy was hugely important.

“As we say on our display, for everyone, everywhere, literacy is a basic human right.”

Altrusa recently celebrated its 100-year anniversary worldwide and continues to work in 19 centres across New Zealand.

Murder trial begins The trial of an Ashburton man charged with murdering his brother at a family gathering got under way in the High Court at Timaru yesterday.

Jayden Shane Alexander, 23, is charged with fatally stabbing Tainui Wano at a McDonald Street house on September 13 last year.

The family was marking the 11th anniversary of the death of Wano’s cousin, Rangi Wano, killed in a police chase in Christchurch.

People at the gathering had been drinking heavily, Crown prosecutor Andrew McRae told the jury in his opening address.

Alexander was drunk, angry and out of control.

“He confronted his brother, stabbed him once in the chest, perforating the main artery and

causing an unsurvivable injury.”

The trial is expected to last all week and McRae said a critical issue in the case was whether Alexander intentionally assaulted his brother and if he intended to kill him.

McRae told the jury that a door to the lounge at the McDonald Street house had no handle, and a knife needed to be inserted into the door mechanism to open it.

He also said Wano fell asleep during the evening, but had to get up twice to tell his brother to respect the property and calm down by turning down the loud music he was playing.

Among those to give evidence about what happened that night will be Wano’s girlfriend, Emitana Reece Aranui.

McRae said Aranui would say she got out of bed after hearing noises and heard Wano say to Alexander “you hold a knife to me, eh”. Alexander had responded, “yeah, you think I won’t do it”.

Aranui also saw Wano telling Alexander to go home, and pushing Alexander towards the door.

McRae said that during the resulting struggle between the two men, Alexander stabbed Wano on the hand, under the chin and in the chest with a large boning knife.

Alexander is represented by Ashburton lawyer Paul Bradford.

He told the jury Alexander didn’t intend to kill his brother, nor intend to cause an injury likely to cause his death.

The trial continues today.

Sheep ‘worst’ vet’s seen From P1 The ewes were inspected by a veterinarian at the plant the following morning and found to be in a “terrible body condition” and in a wholly unsuitable state to have ever been transported.

One sheep fell down in front of her and died and another went to the ground and had to be euthanised because of its emaciated state.

Officials then went to the property where the ewes had been picked up and found other sheep destined for the pet food industry.

They found 112 sheep in a bare, holding paddock where animals were kept before being

transported for slaughter.

A number of the animals were in very poor condition, suffering from lameness, footrot, emaciation, arthritis and some were continuously coughing.

A local veterinarian examined them and immediately euthanised four. Nine had a body score condition that needed urgent action.

Fletcher said the defendant then put down 31 sheep rather than treat them.

The business model of the operation did not allow for veterinary costs, he said.

Judge Joanna Maze granted interim name suppression and identifying facts but indicated final suppression was unlikely.

Great opportunity for artistic women in Mid Canty

A generous, career-boosting opportunity is up for grabs for any local women harbouring artistic flair.

The Ashburton Art Gallery and Zonta Club of Ashburton are now welcoming entries to the second annual Zonta Ashburton Female Art Award – the ZAFAA18.

Any Canterbury-based emerging and mid-career artists can put their skills forward – and two prizes are on the table for those seen to have outstanding potential.

The Premier Award includes a cash prize and the special opportunity to hold a solo exhibition at the gallery next year, while the Young Generation Award, for female artists between the ages of 16 and 20, is a cash award to encourage further creative endeavours in the visual arts.

Zontians Viv Williams and Elizabeth Stuckey said the Zonta Club of Ashburton is thrilled to be supporting contemporary female artists “in such a direct and meaningful way”.

Zonta is a global organisation of women working to advance the status of women worldwide, and ZAFAA was created to acknowledge excellence in fine arts and assist in the development of growing careers.

This year’s ZAFAA awards attracted 42 entries.

Christchurch artist Fiona van Owen earned the Premier Award, while Ashburton artist Emma Mealings took home the Young Generation Award.

Ashburton Art Gallery curator Shirin Khosraviani described the award as an incredible opportunity.

“There is so much more than money to be gained from award exhibitions such as the ZAFAA.” Entries will be open until November 12, and entry forms are available on the art gallery website.

The awards will be announced by a panel of three judges, on the opening night on March 2, next year.

Woodburner deadline looms Residents who live in the cleanair zone and wish to install a lowemission woodburner have until October 31 to get their applications into the Ashburton District Council.

With older-style and low-emission woodburners being phased out, residents from within the Ashburton township will only be able to apply to install an ultra-

low emission woodburner after the end of October.

So far, applications for building consents have been strong but are expected to get even busier as the cut-off date approaches, according to Ashburton District Council’s building services manager Michael Wong.

“We’ve been kept very busy processing these applications and we

anticipate the trend will continue well into October,” Wong said.

Wong encouraged anyone who felt the deadline affected them, and didn’t have a consent sorted, to visit the council with their application. Applications will be accepted up to and including October 31.

To be granted a solid fuel heater building consent, applications

must include a floor plan of the house indicating where the woodburner and smoke alarms will go, the woodburner’s specifications and a completed application form.

“You don’t need to have purchased your new woodburner prior to applying for the consent, we just need to know what you intend to use,” Wong added.

Once applications have been received and approved, residents will have 12 months to start the installation work and then another 12 months in which to complete it.

At the completion of the installation an inspection of the work will take place and, if it meets compliance, a code compliance certificate will be issued.

A trucking good show for charity

Truck enthusiasts will converge on Ashburton this weekend for the second edition of the Ashburton Truck Show.

After its successful inaugural show last year, the hard work is being done to make sure this year’s event, which will be held this Saturday at the Ashburton Showgrounds is bigger and better than the one before it.

And things are well on track to deliver on that promise.

Invented last year by a couple of men and their friends to raise money for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand, the Ashburton Truck Show will this year see close to 150 trucks on show as well as a large number of other activities for those attending to see and take part in.

Steve Keene, who was a part of the initial brains trust behind the idea said things were shaping up well.

“We managed to raise $17,000 last year which was absolutely mind-blowing, but we want to do better again,” he said.

“The support we received and feedback we got 12 months ago was that we had to run the event again, so here we are.

Police are on the hunt for a group of burglars who made Rakaia’s volunteer-based community groups their target.

In a spate of break-ins between August 19 and 22, a number of community-funded and volunteer-managed organisations reported break-ins to their properties.

The local fire station, Plunket rooms and Rakaia Playcentre all suffered, along with Presbyterian Church and St Ita’s Church.

Police Constable Aaron Tapp said the break-ins all appeared to be connected, with the offenders using the same method to target cash on the premises.

“It seems that the offenders broke windows to get in and once inside, broke down doors to get to offices where cash may be held.”

Though the break-ins had rendered damage to the properties, Tapp said the robbers appeared to have been unsuccessful in their quest for cash.

He said police were very disappointed that places that rely on the charity of the public, that help people in need were targeted.

Anyone with any information on the burglaries was asked to contact police.

The crane, which is capable of holding 100 tonnes and reaching 70 metres high, will be back again due to popular demand and this year will be offering rides to show attendees.

The New Zealand Transport Authority are also joining in this year with an education truck on road safety and the Life Education Truck will be on hand, along with Harold the Giraffe to give some entertainment to children.

Tickets for the event will be sold at the gates, which open at 9am at a cost of $10 for a family, $5 for adults and $2 for under 15s and free for under-fives with all proceeds going to Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand.

Greenpeace vows to continue fight

Government subsidies to significant irrigation projects need to be removed and Greenpeace will not stop holding protests targeting those projects until that goal is achieved.

Following a Greenpeace protest two weeks ago at a Central Plains Water site near Hororata, the environmental organisation is planning another, this time on September 14, at an as-yetundisclosed location, to keep up

its message that what it describes as big irrigation is bad for the health of New Zealand rivers.

Greenpeace sustainable agriculture campaigner Gen Toop said the bottom line was that New Zealand rivers were in poor health and more dairy cows had been identified as the greatest threat to that health improving.

“Irrigation provides an incentive to more intensification of dairying and that has to be removed for the sake of our rivers,” she said.

“We’re not going to stop until we’re happy with the health of our rivers.”

Toop was pleased with what the first protest achieved and said the next one would build on that.

“To halt construction on one of the country’s biggest irrigation scheme’s was no mean feat,” she said.

“As a result we had over 1000 people phone up to get involved [with the next one].”

The campaign was gathering momentum, she said, adding that a petition calling on the Government to stop funding irrigation schemes had attracted nearly 100,000 signatures.

“We’re in the middle of a national freshwater crisis. Seventy per cent of our rivers are unsafe to swim in and this government is backing using taxpayer’s money on schemes that will lead to more

cows. If we’re going to clean up our rivers we have to have fewer cows.”

Toop questioned claims that regions with the most irrigation, such as Canterbury, actually had the lowest percentage of rivers classified as in poor health, saying a range of scientific evidence all drew a clear link between intensification of agriculture and poorer water quality.

She said she was sceptical of any information that suggested otherwise.

Blood alcohol six times legal limit An Ashburton man whose blood alcohol level was nearly six times the legal limit admitted charges of drink driving and careless driving when he appeared in the Ashburton District Court yesterday.

Glenn Darryn Meager was already subject to the restrictions of a zero alcohol licence when he got behind the wheel on March 3 this year.

Crown prosecutor Nyssa Winchester said Meager had been driving north on East Street about 11.30pm when he failed to negotiate the roundabout with Walnut Avenue. His vehicle became airborne as it cleared the roundabout, but was extensively damaged.

Meager continued to drive it until it stopped operating on Creek Road.

People who saw the incident called police who found him so drunk he could not stand up or communicate. A sample of his blood later revealed he had been driving with 291 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. The limit is 50 for drivers over 20 years.

Judge Joanna Maze warned Meager to be prepared for sentencing on October 9.

“You have had home detention before.

You may be moving up the scale.”

Siaki had come to a compulsory stop at the intersection of Jones Road and Hoskyns Road near Rolleston on May 16 but then pulled out in front of a car he didn’t see. A woman in the car he hit suffered a fractured rib.

Judge Maze said the incident had been through restorative justice and Siaki was also paying $50 a week to the woman’s insurance company to cover $7000 damage.

Vernon Te Moananui was also warned about the possibility of a prison sentence after he was convicted for driving with excess breath alcohol, a breach of his zero alcohol licence.

The 21-year-old blew 704mcg when he was stopped on State Highway 1 in the early hours of August 11.

A police patrol had noted him speeding at 121km/h with passengers in the car and followed him. Te Moananui drove onto Works Road, exited the vehicle and got into the back seat, where he pretended to be a passenger.

The Ashburton man has two previous drink drive convictions and could now lose his licence indefinitely.

He was remanded to September 18 for sentencing.

“You are possibly at a level when imprisonment could be considered as a starting point. Home detention or community detention may be considered.”

Acting like a boy racer in Christchurch earned Joshua Brian O’Neill a $300 fine.

He was also disqualified from driving for six months.

O’Neill, 19, was driving on Fitzgerald Avenue just after midnight on July 15 and revved his engine while stopped at a red light on the multi-laned avenue frequented by boy racers.

Police prosecutor Bronwen Blackmore said the speed limit was 50km/h but he accelerated heavily away when the light turned green, reaching a speed of 70km/h.

An unmarked police car stopped him and he told officers he had been showing off to the occupants of another vehicle at the intersection.

He admitted the charge of exhibiting unnecessary acceleration.

Filipo Siaki admitted a charge of care-

Moon Tuilaepa, 38, was sentenced to 40 hours community work following a road rage incident at a supermarket.

The meatworker had admitted a charge of intimidation.

Judge Maze said there had been a dispute in the carpark of a supermarket and Tuilaepa had followed the complainant into the store, where there was a discussion about what happened.

He raised his finger in her face in an intimidating manner and pushed her off balance.

“It is a form of road rage,” the judge said.

Alexander Thomas McEnaney was fined $600 after admitting a charge of driving with excess breath alcohol.

McEnaney blew 663mcg after being stopped by police. He has a similar con-

viction as an under 20 driver.

Judge Maze also disqualified him from driving for six months and ordered him to pay $130 court costs.

He was also authorised to apply for a zero alcohol licence when the disqualification ends, a licence that is conditional on him committing to a zero alcohol driving limit for three years. If he chooses not to, his licence after the disqualification will not be valid.

Ashley Rose Newton, a mother of one, was sentenced to 65 hours community work after admitting a charge of driving with excess breath alcohol.

She was also disqualified from driving for six months and authorised to apply for a zero alcohol licence. Her car was also confiscated.

Newton was stopped by police on Walnut Avenue late on August 11. She blew 838mcg.

She told police she had been drinking wine at home, not intending to drive, but left the house after an argument.

It was her second drink driving offence within two years. She would lose her licence indefinitely if caught again, the judge warned.

Jordan James Green, 22, a steel fixer, was fined $500 for driving over the breath alcohol limit on August 11. He blew 623mcg when police stopped him on West Street. He was also ordered to pay court costs of $130 and disqualified from driving for six months.

Regan Paul Ayers was sentenced to 100 hours community work when he appeared for sentence on his third drink driving charge.

Ayers was caught as an under 20 driver in 1998 and blew 1067mcg when caught in 2015.

He blew 918mcg when police stopped him in Ashburton in April this year.

Judge Maze said it was a concern that both recent ones had returned high readings. She disqualified him from driving indefinitely and also confiscated his car.

Ayers will have to apply to the New Zealand Transport Agency to get his licence back.

NZ suicide rates continue upward spiral There’s new calls for an independent inquiry into mental health services as New Zealand’s suicide rates continue to rise.

New statistics show 606 people died by suicide in the 2016-17 year, up from 579 in the 2015-16 year, making this the third year in a row that suicide rates have risen, according to the Chief Coroner’s office.

This year’s figure is the highest number of suicide deaths since the provisional statistics were first recorded for the 2007-08 year.

Chief Coroner Judge Deborah Marshall said New Zealand had much to do to turn around its stubbornly high rate of suicide.

“What is equally important is our discussion around how we can prevent suicides and how everyone, family, friends and colleague, is able to recognise someone at risk and ensure they get the professional help they need,” she said.

The Mental Health Foundation is just as devastated by the figures and says social factors, such as poverty, inequality, racism and homophobia, continue to contribute to the suicide rate.

Its chief executive, Shaun Robinson, says it’s time to resource schools to adequately care for students in distress, to end bullying and teach young people the skills they need to cope when life gets difficult.

Meanwhile, the Public Service Association – the union for government workers – said there was a demand crisis for mental health services, with people unable to get access to the help they needed.

“To even begin to address this crisis, we must immediately hold an urgent independent inquiry into the delivery of mental health services and we must set a national suicide prevention target,” it said.

The latest figures prompted the Greens to renew their call for a mental health inquiry.

“The number of Kiwis who are tragically taking their own lives reflects the failings in our broken mental health system,” said health spokeswoman Julie Anne Genter.

“We need a decent, functioning mental health system that allows people to be seen quickly and ensures they get the help they need.”

The Government was criticised last month after its latest suicide prevention strategy didn’t include a numerical 10-year-old target for reduction, despite an expert panel it appointed calling for a set goal of a 20 per cent drop over the period. Health Minister Jonathan Coleman this month said he was reconsidering a fixed target after advice from experts.

Hundreds plucked from rising floodwaters

BY MICHAEL GRACZYK Harvey sent devastating floods pouring into the United States’ fourth-largest city yesterday (NZ time) as rising water chased thousands of people to rooftops or higher ground and overwhelmed rescuers who could not keep up with the constant calls for help.

The incessant rain covered much of Houston in turbid, gray-green water and turned streets into rivers navigable only by boat.

In a rescue effort that recalled the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, helicopters landed near flooded freeways, airboats buzzed across submerged neighbourhoods and high-water vehicles plowed through water-logged intersections. Some people managed with kayaks or canoes or swam.

Volunteers joined emergency teams to pull people from their homes or from the water, which was high enough in places to gush into second floors.

The flooding from Harvey, which made landfall Saturday as a Category 4 hurricane and has lingered dropping heavy rain as a tropical storm, was so widespread that authorities had trouble pinpointing the worst areas.

They urged people to get on top of their houses to avoid becoming trapped in attics and to wave sheets or towels to draw attention to their location.

Residents living around the Addicks and Barker reservoirs designed to help prevent flooding in downtown Houston, were warned yesterday that a controlled release from both reservoirs would cause additional street flooding and could spill into homes.

Rising water levels and continuing rain was putting pressure on the dams that could cause a failure without the release.

Meanwhile, officials in Fort Bend County, Houston’s south-western suburbs, yesterday issued widespread mandatory

evacuation orders along the Brazos River levee districts. Judging from federal disaster declarations, the storm has so far affected about a quarter of the Texas population, or 6.8 million people in 18 counties. It was blamed for at least two deaths.

As the water rose, the National Weather Service issued another ominous forecast: Before the storm that arrived as a Category 4 hurricane is gone, some parts of Houston and its suburbs could get as much as 50 inches (1.3m) of rain.

That would be the highest amount ever recorded in Texas.

Some areas have already received about half that amount.

“The breadth and intensity of this rainfall is beyond anything experienced before,” the National Weather Service said.

The director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Brock Long, said: “This disaster’s going to be a landmark event.”

Second arrest in palace terror incident

BY SYLVIA HUI London police arrested a second man yesterday in connection with a suspect who drove up to a police van not far from Buckingham Palace then reached for a 4-foot (1.2m) sword, an incident detectives called a terrorism attempt.

Scotland Yard said three officers were slightly injured when they confronted the 26-year-old man who allegedly drove at the police van then stopped in a restricted area outside the gates of Queen Elizabeth II’s London residence Saturday (NZ time).

The driver reached for the sword in his

car and repeatedly shouted “Allahu akbar!” (“God is great” in Arabic) during the incident, police said. The officers used tear-gas to incapacitate the man and arrested him at the scene.

No-one other than the man and the officers were injured. Two of the officers were treated for minor cuts in the hospital, while the third did not require hospital treatment.

Police said a second suspect, a 30-yearold man, was detained yesterday in west London on suspicion of involvement in terrorism. Officers were searching an address in the area as part of the probe.

Police had said on Sunday they believed the first suspect was acting alone and were not looking for potential accomplices.

The force has obtained a warrant to detain him until September 1.

“This is a timely reminder that the threat from terrorism in the UK remains severe,” Metropolitan Police counter-terrorism chief Dean Haydon said. “While we cannot speculate on what the man was intending to do – this will be determined during the course of the investigation – it is only right that we investigate this as a terrorist incident at this time.”

Suicide, it’s time for honest and open talking Matt Markham

t’s so often not talked about that it’s almost become taboo, but after yesterday’s release of the statistics around suicide in New Zealand – we need to stop hiding from the truth and admit that we have a serious issue in this country.

The fact that the number of people who have taken their own life has risen gradually over the past five years is probably the most alarming statistic of all – especially considering the time and funding that goes into prevention at a national level.

In the past 12 months 606 people have taken their own life.

That’s 606 lives wasted. Most of which may have been prevented.

We’re not saying that all of a sudden the problem is going to disappear if we start being more open about the subject – but when every other avenue that has been explored is seemingly failing, what other options do we, as a country, have?

In the media we don’t generally report on suicide. The law restricts what we can print, but ignorance is a part of the problem.

We are ignorant of the fact that there are depressed people walking among us every day and we are ignorant, in most cases, of what we could be doing to help those people.

We hear of someone taking their own life and think ‘oh, that’s sad – I wish they had asked for help’ as though it’s as easy as walking up to a mate and saying hello.

Often all it takes is just someone to listen and to offer some perspective and all of a sudden things don’t seem quite so dark anymore.

But the opportunities have to be there and the knowledge has to also be there of what we should be looking for. And that’s where some of the education might be better aimed going forward.

There’s no doubt that yesterday’s statistics will have come as a shock to some organisations, but we can only hope it’s enough of a shock to kick-start some new initiatives and try and turn those figures around.

And turn them around fast.

‘Virtual signalling’ gains pace Andrew Hoggard FROM THE FARM

“

Virtue signalling” is described as the conspicuous expression of moral values done primarily with the intent of enhancing standing within a social group.

Listening to some of the plans of various political parties, particularly around climate change and how they wish to include agriculture in our Emissions Trading Scheme, I’m left wondering if it isn’t just an attempt to virtue signal on an international scale. Talking about really grand gestures, but achieving next to bugger all.

If we look at what the point is of the ETS, it is supposedly about driving change towards emitting less greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

Then if you take into account several other key points, those being that the world needs to eat and New Zealand is one of the most carbon-efficient producers of food in the world.

We have been continually improving that carbon efficiency for many years and, in terms of mitigating our greenhouse gas footprint, there is no silver bullet that currently exists that will allow for big reductions beyond those annual efficiency gains.

With that in mind then including agriculture in the New

Zealand ETS will have totally perverse outcomes, and likely increase global emissions rather than reduce them.

My argument is and I acknowledge it’s an old one (but no decent counter-argument has been put against it) is given New Zealand farmers are already setting the global benchmark of how to farm efficiently, then the only way to drive down total emissions is to reduce New Zealand production. And, if we reduce production in New Zealand, then given that the

then that logic still doesn’t work, because surely then they should be dropping the production occurring in the most inefficient countries, not the most efficient.

Another big issue of course is that there is no actual realistic way for farmers to accurately measure their greenhouse gas emissions at an individual farm scale.

So any costs of an ETS are likely to land on the processor who will then just pass it on to farmers at a per kilogram of product amount.

Then when you try to point this out, the answer seems to be ‘well it’s not that big a tax, you pay more for heaps of other stuff, so what’s your problem?’

If, as a country, we are serious about tackling these issues then we need to have well-thoughtout and properly researched ideas that will actually achieve the outcomes we are after.

It was refreshing to read the frontpage article in your paper last week, August 24, “4 lanes opens opportunities for Ashburton”.

Yes, it will happen, but as we know it will be many years before it will be in place.

Many years but it is coming. Importantly, we must plan to have this infrastructure in place to meet the increased demand.

It is good to see a district councillor, Stuart Wilson, prepared to speak out about his concerns of the present direction the town is heading in its transport strategy.

As he said, this could ignite a review of the town’s second bridge project and its intended location.

Stuart is absolutely correct, the project must be reviewed. There is time to do this, we were assured at the time there would be an opportunity to review the decision.

world still needs to be fed, that will mean that production will increase somewhere else.

That production won’t be as carbon efficient, so there will be more greenhouse gases emitted per unit of food than if it was produced in New Zealand. Thus world emissions go up. Not what we are after.

In the recent Vivid report, they addressed this by saying ‘oh but we should eat less meat and dairy anyway, so it’s all good’.

Well even if I agreed with that,

There will be no signal in that to become more efficient at an individual level, as everyone will get hit by the same amount regardless of where they sit. Again how is this going to encourage more efficient farming, the only way to pay less is by producing less.

Stuart is correct in saying: There’s no point in coming to Ashburton and then saying to traffic, find your own way through the town. We would be the only town of its size in NZ, along with our traffic flows, that fails to have a four-lane road and the suitable infrastructure (intersections) in place to enable good traffic flows.

Highways are built for traffic volume and if that road nears capacity, it is usual to increase that capacity, but importantly the success is achieved by programming good access on to and off that road. The present infrastructure in Ashburton’s West Street, following on to Tinwald’s Archibald Street, is a disaster. The intersections are not suitable for increased traffic flows.

To divert traffic through the res-

idential areas – Chalmers Avenue, with three schools and two play centres in close proximity, and the Tinwald residential area including their school, is poor planning and a lack of vision.

The proposed entrance and outlet to this new secondary highway route is hopeless, NZTA (highways) has sidestepped its legislative responsibilities to maintain and further develop their network through our town.

[NZTA] has failed our district by promoting an alternative route to direct traffic through our residential areas and, by doing so, will place much of the financial burden on to Ashburton ratepayers.

Ashburton deserves better.

The first step is easy, common sense; a four-lane carriageway straight through and a double bridge with quality intersections.

The challenge our district council and transport planners have is to put in place a route close to our

town (bypass) for the future. The time to start the planning of this new route is now.

For the long-term benefit of town and district, we must show some leadership and get it right.

A film worth seeing I have been following the debate on water issues in the Guardian with interest.

Yesterday a viewing at the Regent Cinema of Seven Rivers Walking was attended by 40 to 50 people.

This film records the concerns felt by many people with longstanding and intimate connections with some of Canterbury’s rivers.

NZ wine exports hit record high The export value of New Zealand wine has hit a record high of $1.66 billion, making it our fifth largest goods export.

The 2017 Annual Report of New Zealand Winegrowers showed that the value of wine exports had increased by 6 per cent in the 12 months to June 30, 2017.

Exports to the US led the growth, passing $500m in value for the first time and making NZ wine the third most valuable wine import into the country behind France and Italy.

“With diversified markets and a strong upward trajectory, the industry is in good shape to achieve $2 billion of exports by 2020,” said Steve Green, chairman of New Zealand Winegrowers.

“Our premium reputation remains the greatest collective asset for New Zealand wine, and underlies the high average price our wine commands in global trade,” Green said.

New Zealand’s wine exports achieved an additional layer of protection this year with the introduction of official geographical indications legislation.

The model is similar to one which has been used in Europe.

France has used the Appellation d’origine Controlee (AOC) for decades and certain regions also use

geographical indicators (GI). It means for instance, that only wine from Champagne and Burgundy can be referred to as such.

Italy and Spain have similar protection with the Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) and the Denominacion de Origen

respectively which affords protection to wines such as Sherry, Rioja and Cava.

Central Otago winemaker and NZ Winegrowers director James Dicey told the Herald at the time that unlike AOC and DOC, the New Zealand geographical indicators would not restrict the types of grapes grown or attempt to guarantee quality.

Dicey said the new measure would give consumers confidence in the wine they were consuming, especially in the overseas market.

New Zealand Winegrowers acting chief executive Jeffrey Clarke said the introduction of GI was a significant advance for the local wine industry.

“Our geographical indications, the names and places where our wines come from, are at the very heart of the New Zealand wine story and this new law provides an additional level of protection for them,” Clarke told the Herald at the time.

The wine industry is working towards $2b in export value by 2020.

Chorus profit up after cuts

By Paul McBeth Chorus lifted annual profit 24 per cent after cutting costs and changing the way it capitalises some labour costs, making up for a decline in connection numbers that’s been driven by the network operator’s biggest customer, Spark New Zealand.

Net profit rose to $113 million, or 23 cents per share, in the 12 months ended June 30, from $91 million, or 19 cents, a year earlier, the Wellington-based company said in a statement.

Revenue edged up 3 per cent to $1.04 billion as the network operator benefited from an increase in regulated prices on its copper lines, while expenses fell 6.7 per cent to $388 million. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation rose to $652 million from $594 million a year earlier.

“Chorus’ financial results for 2017 were underpinned by a strong focus on costs as we streamlined copper provisioning processes and began capitalising labour expenses relating to certain fibre provisioning costs,” the company said in a statement.

The network operator got some relief from the Commerce Commission in late 2015 when the regulator decided to wind back some of the price reductions it planned to enforce for the network company’s copper infrastructure.

Still, since then it’s faced increasing competition from Spark, which has been marketing its fixed wireless broadband as a viable alternative to the network in an effort to cut its reliance on Chorus and trim its own expense line.

That’s eroded Chorus’ customer numbers, with total fixed line connections falling 7 per cent to 1.6

million and its broadband connections down 3 per cent to 1.19 million.

Chief executive Kate McKenzie said the shift in market dynamics triggered the company to embark on an ad campaign to promote the benefits and availability of the fixed line network, which she said has had “positive results” thus far.

Chorus also undertook a strategic review to consider evolving technology and industry developments, which McKenzie said showed fibre is “clearly the best technology” to meet those demands.

“Given the likely infrastructure requirements and service charac-

teristics of future wireless technology, and the extensive nature of our fibre to the home network, we believe wireless will continue to be a largely complementary access technology,” she said.

The board declared a final dividend of 12.5 cents per share, payable on October 10 with a September 26 record date. That takes the annual return to 21 cents per share.

Chorus expects to lift that total dividend to 22 cents per share in the 2018 financial year, with ebitda of between $625 million and $650 million.

The shares slipped 0.9 per cent to $4.61.

safeguard because it has an existing bilateral trade agreement with Japan. Australian frozen beef only faces a tariff of 27.2 per cent, giving it a massive 22.8 per cent advantage. This is already having a major impact on our exports, which were worth $79 million last year.”

MIA chief executive Tim Ritchie said Australia was responsible for about 50 per cent of Japan’s beef imports, which contributed to the trigger of the safeguard on frozen beef. There was a distinct possibility that a similar WTO safeguard may be triggered on chilled beef exports into Japan in the next few months, which would further disadvantage the sector.

“Japan is New Zealand’s largest chilled beef market, worth $63 million last year.

Japan also concluded free trade agreement negotiations with the European Union earlier this year, and agreed to give the EU similar outcomes on beef as in TPP. “The Government’s negotiating mandate for TPP11 will level the playing field and will ensure our exporters remain competitive in overseas markets.

“TPP would also deliver important gains in other markets such as Mexico and Canada, where our sheep and beef exports face tariffs ranging from 10 to 60 per cent,” Ritchie said.

Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ) and the Meat Industry Association (MIA) are right behind the Government’s continued efforts to bring the Trans-Pacific Partnership 11 (TPP11) into effect and want to see it done as soon as possible.

B+LNZ chief executive Sam McIvor said the trade agreement would deliver major gains to the New Zealand sheep and beef sector, despite the US’s withdrawal last year.

“Japan is New Zealand’s fifth largest market for red meat and co-products, with exports of over $302 million last year,” McIvor said.

“Japan is the market in which the sheep and beef sector faces its single highest tariff burden. Last year the sector faced tariffs of $73 million on its $302 million exports, an average tariff of 24 per cent – and money that would have trickled down to all New Zealand households.”

McIvor said the TPP11 had become even more important in recent weeks.

“On August 1, Japan increased its tariffs on frozen beef from 38.5 per cent to 50 per cent under a World Trade Organisation (WTO) safeguard, which will apply until March next year,” he said.

“Australia, one of our largest competitors in the market, is not affected by the

MARKET REPORT Dairy The region enjoyed three fine days last week to allow some drying of heavy soils but more rain is predicted to return later in the week.

August has followed July with only single figure dry days and this has accumulated to make some pastures prone to pugging.

Calving in Canterbury has passed the half way mark and early replacement heifer calves are now being seen grazing outside. The focus will soon turn to mating and the importance of body conditions scores and advisers remind managers of the high cost of dry or late calving cows.

Gear changes hands

There were buyers, lookers and those who just came for a yarn, but on Friday, the Methven farm that has been McKay land for around 90 years was the busiest place in the district.

Its third family owner, Angus McKay, sold up last month for a recordbreaking $8.25 million, setting a new record for arable land in the district, $57,112 per hectare, and Friday’s clearing sale was the final step in severing his ties with Three Springs Farm.

The 144-hectare property is now in the hands of neighbour, cropping farmer Richard Watson.

On sale was a lifetime and a generation or two of farming memorabilia and equipment. And most of it found ready buyers.

As he watched the sale McKay said he was pleased to see there were at least a couple of bidders for most items. It all had to go, he said.

If the farm sale broke records, then the clearing sale must have come close in terms of numbers. There were more than 200 registered bidders and more than double that in people who were just out for a day in the sun.

Among the crowd were plenty of seasoned cockies. Some were keeping an eye out for a bargain, but others said they had just turned up to see who was there and to catch up with neighbours.

If you wanted a bargain you had to be quick. The Rural Livestock team was slick. They chased bids but didn’t give buyers time to be tardy. You were in or out. Hundreds of lots had to be

sold during the afternoon, nod at the wrong time and it was yours.

It was also an opportunity for farmers of yesteryear to sit in the sun and reminisce.

Some remained collectors of old farm equipment and were keeping a close eye on selected items – rust and all, others were happy to sit in the sun and yarn.

Buyers came from across Canterbury and many came with trailers – just in case.

For many, the chance to check out a clearing sale was an all too rare treat today. While some farm sales result in a shed clean-out, with so many dairy farms, all the gear often goes with the sale, one farmer said.

“We used to have two or three to choose from a week, but there’s nothing like that now,” another said.

Some more lifts in export lamb schedules as processors utilise demand in many markets for a smaller than normal chilled supply.

Frozen leg demand in the UK and Europe continues to weaken but, at present, these cuts can be marketed elsewhere.

The early lambing flocks are now well through but the bulk of the crop starts from September on and a wary eye will be kept on weather forecasts to ensure high scanning percentages will survive. Replacement ewe hoggets are receiving renewed interest and heavy prime lambs are now making more than $150/hd at local saleyards.

Wool The North Island wool auction sale last week was slightly stronger with only 7 per cent passed in and the coarse indicator lifted to 286c/kg clean.

These low prices for crossbred wool will force more farmers to look hard at shearing frequency decisions as they strive to minimise the cost of wool on their sheep returns.

The wet weather has delayed pre-lamb and hogget shearing but auction sales will have plenty of unsold stock to make up any shortfall.

Beef Analysts report that the strong run for manufacturing beef into the US is predicted to end on the back of big autumn cow kills in that country and the Japanese tariff increase, which has effectively closed that market until April 2018.

Silver Fern Farms announced its first shipment of chilled sea freighted prime beef to China with the products’ ageing process occurring in transit.

Deer More lifts in spring venison schedules as contracts are now being achieved in the mid $9-$10/kg cwt range for chilled spring market specifications.

Hinds have now fallen to being only 47-48 per cent of the kill as farmers reinvest to expand the breeding herd.

Deadlines are close for shed upgrades for velvet removal and improved freezer rules for the new velvet season.

Add the ginger, mirin and soy sauce and stir-fry over medium heat until the sauce is a syrupy consistency and the chicken is cooked through. Remove from the heat and cool.

■ Place one sheet of nori, shiny side down, on a bamboo sushi mat. Cover two thirds of the nori

with rice and gently press down.

Place the chicken, red pepper and avocado in a strip along the rice. Roll up, using the bamboo mat to roll it tightly. Cut into slices to serve. Serve with soy sauce, wasabi and pickled ginger.

he 1960s was a decade of change and young people were rewriting the rules.

Dance was a prime example.

No longer was dance formal, with a man and a woman dancing together to complicated set steps, now single people and groups of friends could dance together to popular music.

Individual dance moves had great names such as the Freddie, the locomotion, the mashed potato, the shimmy, and who could forget, the twist.

These dances broke the mould for how to dance, and how to have fun.

Music was changing and so was the way people consumed music.

No longer was music just available via the radio and records, there were now TV with shows, like C’mon and later, Happen Inn. This meant dance moves spread rapidly.

It also started a fad for special dance moves such as the twist and go-go dancing.

The Twist The Twist was released in 1959 by Hank Ballard and the Midnighters, inspired by the dance moves of teenagers of the time.

At first just a moderate hit, when Chubby Checker recorded a cover version of the song, in 1960, it gave birth to a twist dance craze.

A record producer had hired popular Chubby Checker to perform the song on a television programme American Bandstand in 1959.

This catapulted the song and its matching dance to the mainstream.

Teens loved the catchy tune and the easy dance moves.

As the distribution of the television spread so did the dances that went with it.

This meant that new dance moves spread like wildfire.

Each song could have its own unique dance moves, meaning the latest fashion dance moves were always changing.

The choreography of the 1960s dance moves meant they were simple, easy to learn and had way fewer rules.

The twist was just a hip movement, twisting back and forth.

This simple dance move also fitted in to the now popular beach movie fad and looked great on television sets and at the movies.

Radiant Hall The Ashburton Museum has been collecting stories from Ashburton’s dance hall craze.

Many people have told stories of heading to the hall having come straight from viewing popular movies.

No doubt a few dance floor moves were inspired by dance scenes just witnessed.

People recall such things as arriving on a push bike, hair carefully wrapped up under a scarf, smoothing down a dress newly made at home especially for going out.

Dashing in to the women’s toilet to fix bouffant hairdos and make-up.

Walking across town in pointy stilettos, and hoping to get a double on a bike back home after hours of dancing.

Boys sitting on one side of the hall, girls on the other side, eyeing each other up, and watching the door to see who you were going to dance with next or who had just arrived.

All of the above under a cloud of cigarette smoke, with a live band jumping in the background.

The Ashburton Museum is just about to call the last dance at the Radiant Hall.

The exhibition closes this weekend, as we make way for a new exhibition.

There is still time to share your memories, and we will certainly keep collecting material related to this important venue and time in Ashburton’s living memory.

Wakanui wins plate final

All three of Mid Canterbury’s division one hockey sides played out thrilling finals in Timaru on Saturday.

The Wakanui men’s side were the only side able to pick up a win, taking down Northern Hearts through a shootout in the plate final.

“It was a good season considering we went from the wooden spoon to third place in a couple of games, I am not going to complain,” captain Sam Moore said.

“When we felt like it we could beat anyone in the competition, but then also if we felt like it we could lose to anyone in the competition.”

The scores were locked at 2-all at the final whistle and goalkeeper Jacob Gray was the hero on the day, saving Northern Hearts’ first four shots.

“It is a best of five shoot-out and we had scored two, so when he saved the fourth one we didn’t even have to shoot again as they wouldn’t be able to catch us, Moore said.

Playing in the final for first in the women’s first division, the Hampstead women’s side were on the wrong end of a shootout loss against Timaru Girls’ High School, who they had beaten via a shootout the last time the two sides met.

“It was a game fitting of a final.

It was very, very close and we had our opportunities to win it and so did they,” coach Rex Turnbull said.

“Our goalkeeper tore her calf muscle towards the end and still took part in the shoot-out, so that

was a sign of how tough she is.”

The scores were locked at 1-all at the end of the time, with Timaru Girls’ winning the shootout 2-1.

“We have used 24 different players this year which shows just how tough it has been getting a team together at times, but it has been a good season,” he said.

Hampstead/Collegians did not have to wait for a final whistle to see their plate final hopes dashed, losing in normal time to Craighead in a high-scoring match 4-3.

Wood scores on Burnley debut to earn draw Chris Wood has had a memorable English Premier League debut for Burnley.

The All Whites striker has come off the bench to fire home an injury time equaliser to secure a 1-1 draw against Tottenham at Wembley.

Tottenham has only managed two wins in 12 matches in the last decade at English soccer’s national stadium, which is being used as the team’s temporary home for this season while White Hart Lane is being redeveloped.

“The feeling is not so great because of the way we conceded the last goal,” Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino said.

“That is football. It was a tough game. Difficult for us to play. We had the chance to score a second or third but we missed. Sometimes you pay.”

Persistent pressure had paid off at the start of the second half when Dele Alli put Tottenham in front. Christian Eriksen’s corner was flicked on by Eric Dier at the

near post and Alli scrambled the ball into the net in the 49th minute.

But Tottenham wasted chances to put the game out of the

reach of the northern visitors and was punished right at the end when Wood marked his Premier League debut with his goal in the second minute of stoppage time.

“I am extremely pleased. It is a difficult task coming to play Tottenham,” Burnley manager Sean Dyche said. “There is a lot made of the stadium but they remain a good side.”

Australia started day two of the first Test in Dhaka in disastrous fashion, with skipper Steve Smith throwing his wicket away to leave Bangladesh in the box seat. In just the third over of the day, Smith charged down the pitch at a Mehedi Hasan delivery perhaps expecting it to stay low, but it went straight through his defences and was bowled for eight. It was an uncharacteristic dismissal for Smith, who averaged an astonishing 71.28 during the tour of India earlier this year to cement his status as the world’s premier test batsman. Dugan set for recall St George Illawarra are set to recall Josh Dugan for their do-or-die NRL clash with Canterbury this weekend. Coach Paul McGregor said the Australian and NSW outside back had paid his penance after being dropped for their clash with Penrith after missing the team bus. McGregor initially refused to comment when asked if Dugan would return to face the Bulldogs on Sunday, a match which will decide if they finish in the topeight. Meninga admits there is no standout candidate to replace Walters if he was lost to the NRL. Walters is not off contract until next year but QRL boss Rob Moore confirmed they still had not received a final verdict on whether he would stay on next year.

The Gold Coast confirmed on yesterday they would enter an early guilty plea for the Queensland State of Origin prop, after he was hit with a gradethree charge following a shot on Moses Mbye in Saturday’s loss to Canterbury. The early plea will ensure he avoids a lengthier ban of five matches, however it means he will miss the first two games of Australia’s World Cup campaign if he is selected in Mal Meninga’s squad.

Strong showing at champs The Jennian Homes Ashburton Swim team produced some strong performances at the South Island championships in Blenheim over the weekend.

The team of eight all broke their personal best times, with Andrew Peel, Jared Scammell and Bree Middleton bringing home medals.

Middleton was the big medal winner at the event, winning gold in the 50, 100, 200 and 400m

freestyle, silver in the 800m freestyle and 100m butterfly.

Middleton was part of both Canterbury regional relay teams that won silver and finished fourth in the 400m individual medley.

Jared Scammell won silver in the 100m freestyle, 8th place in the 200m freestyle and set personal bests in the 400m freestyle and 100m butterfly.

Andrew Peel picked up two

bronze medals, one in the 1500m freestyle and the other in the 400m individual medley.

Both times were personal bests, as well as the times he set in the 200m individual medley and the 200m and 400m freestyle.

Brea Roderick set personal best times in the 800m and 400m freestyle.

Courtney Elliot also turned in impressive results, picking up personal bests in the 100, 200

and 800m freestyle, and in the 50, 100 and 200m butterfly.

Elliot also swam for the Canterbury B regional relay team, which placed fourth in the 15 and under 400m race.

Blake Farr, Leigh Harrison and Bailey Tait also broke their previous best times.

The swimmers will now turn their attention to the national short course championships in Auckland in October.

Day-night Black Caps, England test gets thumbs up The first test between the Black Caps and England starting March 22 will be played under lights – following Eden Park’s successful application for resource consent from the Auckland Council.

Tentatively scheduled to be the first Day-Night Test played in New Zealand, the fixture today received the blessing of an independent panel of commissioners, and now looms as one of the highlights of the Black Caps’ 2017-18 home summer.

New Zealand Cricket chief operating officer Anthony Crummy was delighted with the approval, saying the day-night timeframe would make the Test more accessible for fans - many of whom would not otherwise be able to attend or watch.

“NZC has a particular focus on improving access to cricket for everyone,” said Mr Crummy. “Being able to stage the Test as a daynighter is a significant step in the

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson. right direction. “This means we can promote cricket in its most modern and vibrant incarnation; we can improve accessibility for new audiences, and we can showcase Eden Park, Auckland and New Zealand to a truly global au-

dience,” he said.

Worldwide, only five Day-Night Tests have so far been played, three of which were staged in Australia, including the inaugural Day-Night Test between the Black Caps and Australia at Adelaide

in November 2015. In the most recent match between England and West Indies in Birmingham, 70,000 tickets were sold across the first three days.

Mr Crummy said Test cricket was facing increasingly challenging times in terms of relevance and context, and this was being borne out by crowd numbers, viewership ratings and broadcast right values.

“This a very important outcome for Test cricket lovers in New Zealand – simply because it allows us the opportunity to play the game at a time when more people can engage with it.

“We’re sure it will be a very successful event, and that English and New Zealand fans alike will make the most of the opportunity.”

Hours of play for the Day-Night Test sessions are expected to be from 2pm-4pm, 4.20pm-6.20pm and 7pm-9pm.

A soccer-obsessed teen with Down syndrome has been banned from playing with his under-14s team as an extra 12th man.

Marc Reichler-Stillhard, 16, has enjoyed playing the sport since he was a 6-year-old but in recent years has struggled to keep up with his team-mates’ skills and fitness.

For the past two seasons his team has used Marc as a 12th man on the field, with opposition teams agreeing to let the keen footballer remain on the field.

However, a parent from an opposition team wrote a complaint to the football association saying the extra man gave the team an unfair advantage, with Marc no longer allowed to take the field as a 12th man.

Rules state that only 11 players are allowed on the field at a time.

His mother Enid is now begging the North Coast Football associate to rethink their decision and allowed her son to take the field.

“With all the will in the world Marc will never make a difference to the outcome of the game. He just wants to play, he loves sport.

“He kicks the ball maybe three or four times, and gets a great cheer when he does.

“They let him play as a 12th man, so that’s gone on for two years and it was unofficial and was never sanctioned because we never thought to sanction it,” she told Today Tonight.

“Every week we asked the other coaches, ‘can Marc play as a 12th man if we have sufficient numbers?’

“They go ‘yeah no problem’ [and so] he goes on as a 12th man,” Enid said about the arrangement that’s allowed Marc to continue to play.

Marc’s mother has tried reaching out to the association to see if there could be any lenience for her son, but claims she has been met with silence.

The association took to Facebook to defend their stance, saying that they haven’t banned Marc from playing but that only a “maximum of 11 players” are allowed on the field.

“It has come to our attention that a Facebook post has been made with claims that North Coast Football (NCF) has denied a young man with a disability, the opportunity to participate in football.

“This is completely untrue. The fact is that NCF supported and encouraged his participation by providing an exemption to allow him to participate in a lower age group with the club team in which he has many friends.

“Football is an inclusive sport and there are a number of players with disabilities currently participating in competitions throughout the Zone.”

Marc’s mum says she is yet to tell her son about the controversial decision. “He’s good because we haven’t really told him everything, we’ve kept it under wraps.”

Team parents took to social media to support Marc, applauding his inspirational attitude to life and love of football.

Local success on the big stage

There was a distinct Ashburton flavour to one of the biggest days of harness racing in Australasia at Breeders Crown Final Day at Melton, Victoria, when smart trotting filly, Renezmae was victorious.

The young trotter, who is trained by up and coming, Jack Harrington, claimed one of the most popular victories of the day when she won in the hands of champion driver, Dexter Dunn.

The win was celebrated here in Ashburton with Noel and Maxine Green, along with Jim Cruickshank, sharing in the ownership of the filly.

The Greens were on hand at Melton to witness the victory, while Cruickshank watched from home.

“It was a great thrill,” Cruickshank said.

‘I will play for NZ’

By Andrew Alderson The question hung in the air like a shot ready to be blocked, but Steven Adams considered it respectfully.

“You’ve probably had a chance to talk to [New Zealand coach] Paul Henare, what kind of discussions have you had with him in terms of playing for the Tall Blacks?”

Adams, despite his advances into the NBA with the Oklahoma City Thunder, has not played for the national side.

The prospect might not be far away after New Zealand reached the semifinals of the Asia Cup this month.

Adams said he and Henare have a “good relationship”.

“What he’s doing with the new group is huge, so respect to him.

He’s fighting to take New Zealand basketball to another level. He’s an amazing coach and a good fulla [fellow]. We’re lucky to have him as head coach of the national team.

“When the time’s right I’ll throw it [the New Zealand singlet] on. A lot of spring cleaning needs to be done, and he [Henare] is doing an amazing job of fighting for his vision of how he wants them to play.”

Sissons sits at seventh New Zealand triathlete Ryan Sissons has produced his third straight top-10 finish in taking fourth at the World Triathlon Series race in Stockholm.

The 29-year-old Zimbabwe-born Kiwi now sits seventh in the series rankings as he prepares for the grand final in Rotterdam on September 14-17. “I would have loved to have been on the podium again but overall it was pretty solid,” he said. “I was happy to get fourth on what is a brutal course. All is on track for a big race in Rotterdam in three weeks.”

Sissons will return to his training base in Spain before a final shakedown race in France next weekend ahead of Rotterdam.

A legend farewelled A crowd estimated at several thousand, including the New Zealand Prime Minister and high-profile rugby players, attended the funeral yesterday of All Blacks legend Colin Meads.

Mourners packed the community hall in Meads’ tiny hometown of Te Kuiti and spilled over into an adjacent marquee in which the service was shown on large screens.

Te Kuiti, with a population of less than 5000, saw its population increase by almost half as crowds paid tribute to Meads, who played 55 tests among 133 matches for the All Blacks between 1957 and 1971.

He was voted New Zealand’s Rugby Player of the Twentieth Century.

Speakers included brother Stan Meads, with whom he played 15 tests, former All Blacks captain Brian Lochore, his daughter and grandchildren.

game. But he was a man of his time. “The one massive difference was that modern players hydrate before the game and we hydrated after,” he said.

Stan Meads said his brother, Colin, was a humble man who would have been embarrassed by the fuss of yesterday’s funeral.

Meads will be buried in a black casket bearing his All Blacks number, 583, which was conveyed to and from the service in a black 1937 Plymouth hearse.

While Meads was famously rugged and uncompromising, speakers said he had a softer side, shown to his family and friends.

The notes for the service included a quote from Meads, who described himself as “a country hick in the big time”.

“It’s like everything in life,” Meads was quoted as saying, “if you try to be yourself and don’t try to be someone else, it all comes right.”

Sixth at Suzuka New Zealander Nick Cassidy has finished sixth in the prestigious Suzuka 1000 race in Japan over the weekend. The Lexus Super GT driver was locked in a battle towards the back end of the top 10 for most of the race but managed to pick up a couple of positions, including that of former Formula 1 world champion Jenson Button, late in the race to recapture second place in the championship standings along with co-driver Ryo Hirakawa.
