Sheep ‘worst’ vet’s ever seen A Mid Canterbury couple have been convicted of wilfully ill-treating sheep, with a veterinarian saying sheep they sent to a meatworks were the worst she has ever seen. The couple, who have interim name suppression, were in the Ashburton District Court yesterday to face a total of eight charges, including wilful ill treatment of animals, reckless ill treatment and transporting the animals in an unfit state. The sheep were part of a pet food op-
eration. The truck driver who transported some of the sheep to the processing plant was also charged with transporting unfit animals. He was also granted interim name suppression. All three were remanded to November 20 for sentencing. The charges were brought by the Ministry for Primary Industries, which says animal mistreatment is not a good look for its products overseas. Prosecutor Grant Fletcher said the

truck driver took 105 ewes to the Smithfield plant in Timaru in June last year but nearly half were emaciated and just 2 per cent were fit enough to be transported. Fifty-one had a body condition score that needed urgent remedial action. The driver had thought some of the sheep were skinny but they had all walked on to the truck, he said.
