It could be apathy rather than a bulldozer that costs Ashburton one of its few remaining heritage buildings, says Historic Places Mid Canterbury chairwoman Julie Luxton.

She’s driving a campaign to make the community aware of the high price that will be paid if the first choice site for Ashburton’s new civic centre and library is given the green light. The recommended site would see both the Baring Square Methodist Church and the old county council building demolished.

The one chance to stop that happening comes with not ticking the boxes in favour of this option on the community consultation document, Luxton said.

“Ticking the box for Opus’ preferred site is signing the death sentence for the church.”

Ashburton had lost most of its heritage buildings both pre and post earthquake and that made it even more important that the few remaining links with the past were saved and restored, she said.

“We recommend anyone who values the presence of this important heritage building in our town refrain from voting

for the preferred option. We believe the council should be exercising real leadership in terms of heritage preservation, rather than proposing that this building be demolished to make way for their own office upgrade.”

Historic Places Mid Canterbury members met recently to discuss the building’s future before it took the next step of engaging both the church and the community, Luxton said.

Tourism group sharing expertise

Ashburton’s tourism network could be about to spread its wings and share its expertise.

While the Ashburton District Council funded organisation was set up to promote tourism in the Ashburton District, Experience Mid Canterbury (EMC) chief executive Bruce Moffat believes there are opportunities to offer services and make money outside

the district as well. He’s asked the council for permission to spread his net wider and said that would only be done if it was a cost neutral exercise or if the work would generate extra cash.

His target is South Canterbury.

He believes that area has huge synergies with the Ashburton District and that the experience in one can be utilised with the other.

“Timaru hasn’t had a tourism

body down there for a number of years and I see this is an opportunity we can look at a bit further, something we could work with,” he said.

He’s already approached the Timaru District Council and said staff and councillors were open to looking at the option.

“The key thing with this is that there will be no impact on ratepayer funding for EMC. “I’m setting up a budget I’ll pre-

sent to Timaru. There will be no blurred lines,” he said.

Ashburton had the experience and the skill set to work with another district in a way that would benefit both, Moffat said.

“If this goes ahead, I’d be employing a local down there, someone who knows the district and understands what’s best for the district.

“We wouldn’t physically run it on the ground, they’d do that but

they’d be under our umbrella.”

For EMC the proposal wasn’t so much about growing revenue, it was about gaining opportunities in a way that would be cost neutral, he said.

A handful of South Canterbury operators are already working under the EMC banner.

At last week’s council meeting Moffat was given the green light by councillors to move ahead with the project.

Tackling homelessness Immigration numbers should be reduced until Auckland’s housing and transport can cope with population growth, says Labour MP and mayoral candidate Phil Goff.

“Urgent and bold action is needed to stop the worsening housing crisis and restore the affordability and availability of housing,” Goff said at his campaign launch in West Auckland yesterday afternoon.

He said Auckland was growing by a record 825 people a week, two-thirds of whom are new migrants.

“Immigration is good for New Zealand – it brings skills and en-

ergy – but it needs to be at a rate transport and housing infrastructure can cope with.”

Goff’s housing policy calls for an easing of record migration numbers to allow infrastructure to catch up with population growth.

“This can be achieved by slowing the issuing of temporary work visas currently running at over 209,000 a year or by lifting the threshold for permanent residency,” Goff said.

A Spinoff/SSI poll released this week found that housing was people’s main priority for the new Auckland Council, at 50.7 per cent. This was well above the

33 per cent for transport.

“The kiwi dream of owning our home is slipping out of the reach of more and more Aucklanders and rents are becoming less affordable,” Goff said.

He said the solutions to Auckland’s housing crisis were multifaceted and involved central government, council, the private sector and developers, iwi and non-government organisations(NGOs).

Goff wants to work with central government and other parties to tackle chronic homelessness based on the principle of first finding a house for homeless people and then wrapping

services around them – “a proven successful model internationally and in New Zealand”.

As mayor, Goff would institute an immediate review of council’s consenting process to make it faster and cheaper, and put more support behind affordable housing schemes, like the 280unit Waimahia housing project at Weymouth.

He supports infrastructure bonds for new development, but says the Government’s $1 billion infrastructure fund is too limited to have a meaningful impact and needs to be significantly expanded.

Man hit by train A man is dead after being hit by a train yesterday as he was trying to rush across the tracks. Police say the death, where Maurice Rd crosses Station Rd in Penrose, is believed to be accidental.

It happened around 3.45pm and the man died at the scene, which is just across the road from Mt Smart Stadium where the Warriors kicked off at 4pm.

Witness Greg Curry-Black said it looked like the man was trying to beat the train across the tracks. “The barriers were down, the lights were going and the train was honking but he was too slow.”

Curry-Black said upset friends and family had gathered at the scene and the body had been covered by a sheet.

A police spokeswoman said the death was believed to be accidental and officers were making inquiries.

Auckland Transport said following the incident, buses would replace trains between Onehunga and Penrose until further notice.

The church building was unique and had multi-use potential such as a small arts venue for recitals, choirs, small instrumental and dramatic performances, as well as versatile meeting, conference, or breakout venue, she said.

“We’re also speculating whether, as a fully restored building, it could adjoin the council’s proposed complex and become a valuable part of it.”

The church has overlooked Baring Square since the mid 1920s and requires significant work to meet post-earthquake building standards. Its church community is currently working through options for the building.

And that meant it was time the Ashburton community asked itself some hard questions, Luxton said.

“How much do we really value your town’s heritage? We realise not everything can be saved, but when we have a building that is central to the town’s heart and such an established and attractive part of the local heritage landscape, we believe all options should be explored.”

The group wanted to gauge the public’s feelings on the church and its future and encourages people to post feedback on its facebook page Historic Places Mid Canterbury.

“But the first step is for people not to tick the box on the consultation document that would put this site as your first choice,” she said.

MAKE A WILL: IT’S YOUR CHANCE TO DO IT YOUR WAY

15 mins’ work to protect your assets

It might be just a simple piece of paper but a will could be the most valuable piece of paper you or your family could have in your home filing cabinet.

Making a will, however, is something many people never get around to doing, says Ashburton solicitor Gretchen Hart.

“For too many people it’s in the too hard basket, but it’s not a huge or onerous thing to do. It could take you 15 to 20 minutes to make but it could save your family a lot of heartache.”

A will was a protection for both its maker and for the people they cared about, she said.

“If you don’t have a will – make one, if your circumstances have changed, review your will, if you’ve had changes in your life you need to look at your will. It’s so important to make a will and once it’s in place then it’s easy to update.”

In the busyness of life young people often forgot to make a will, but at a time when they were marrying, buying a home and having children, having an up-to-date will with guardians appointed for their children was very important, Ms Hart said.

This week is Wills Week and Ashburton’s legal firms have committed to giving $50 for every will they draw up this week to the Mid Canterbury Hospice.

While they may not have experienced an influx of people wanting to make or update a will, if Wills Week prompted discussion and awareness it would have been a success, Ms Hart said.

“A will is your chance to make sure what you have goes to who you want it to. It’s not just important for the person making the will, it’s for all the family. Making one is a far easier process than not having one.”

Failing to make a will – Melanie’s story

For more than 10 years *Melanie and Cameron had been a couple.

She’d been married before and had children, he’d had relationships but was childless.

They believed they’d found their soulmates and that the years before them would be long and happy ones.

Fate stepped in and in a very short space of time Cameron became ill and died.

And as she was still coming to terms with losing the man who had become so much a part of her life, Melanie was plunged into the nightmare that comes when a per-

son dies without making a will.

Melanie’s family was close knit, Cameron’s had chosen not to be a part of the life they’d built together, but within hours of their son and brother’s death his family were on the phone, wanting to know who was getting what from his estate.

“We’d had very little contact with his family for years and overnight, the phone calls started coming, they kept asking, what are you doing with this, what are you doing with that.”

A devastated Melanie pushed their claims aside while she dealt with arranging his funeral but as she grieved she realised Cameron

She immediately sought legal advice and a search began to find the possible will.

During that process she was constantly hounded by Cameron’s brother insisting he was the sole beneficiary.

At times Melanie said she felt like giving in, but continued to fight, believing she knew what Cameron’s wishes would have been.

Eventually no will was unearthed, the claims stopped and turned to attempts to play on her goodwill to hand over money.

It is now clear Cameron died intestate (without a will) but his estate will not be settled until No-

“We’d always said wills were something we must get around to – one day – and we never did,” Melanie said.

“We probably thought we didn’t have a lot worth leaving to anyone and probably assumed it would just go to the other person.”

Cameron’s family demands made her realise that might not be the case. Within a week of his death the issue of his will was raised.

“I told them I understood he didn’t have a will, but his brother said he knew there was a will and that everything had been left to him,” Melanie said.

1966 Holden HR Premier Sedan

Neville Ross’ family is a Holden family through and through, and it started when Neville bought a Holden HR Premier Sedan in 1990.

The Holden HR sitting in Neville’s garage came to New Zealand in 1966 and Neville said the car has had a coloured past.

“The guy we brought it off was having a bit of trouble with the law and if he couldn’t pay the court fees he was going away, so we paid the amount of his court costs and had the car,” he said.

The car also belonged to a previous mayor of Waimate, who also happened to own the local grocery store and Neville said the mayor used to drive the car to Timaru and would come back with the car full of groceries.

“We were at a car show and a man came up to us and said he used to own the car so we found out a lot more of the history,” Neville said.

The Holden HR Premier Sedan has a 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine,

is a two-speed automatic and was manufactured in Australia from 1966 to 1968.

Neville said he and his wife Joan have travelled to many car shows across the country and have had lots of people offer to buy it but they have said no every time.

At their home, Neville and Joan have a garage that is able to fit two Holden Commodores and Neville’s Holden HR. “We used to have Neville’s work car, the HR and my car in here, but we sold the Commodores and I brought this one,” Joan said in reference to her Holden sitting next to the HR. Neville said he is fixing up his Holden HR, giving the back seats a re-upholster, and he has given the main body paint a touch up as well, but said he won’t be painting the roof.

“The roof paint is all original, they don’t make paint like this anymore so I won’t be fixing that part up.

“But you never really stop working on it,” he said.

New propellor for aviation museum A spinning propeller now adorns the back wall of the Ashburton Aviation Museum’s smaller hangar after members spent Saturday hanging it up.

The propeller comes from a Bristol Hercules engine, which belonged to a Bristol B170 Freighter plane operated by SAFE Airways.

Museum members mounted the propeller on the wall with the cowling and hooked it up to

a small motor to allow it to spin slowly.

SAFE Airways bought a number of Bristol B170s from the Pakistani Air Force and used them to transport cargo between the North and South islands between the 1950s and 1970s.

The Hercules engine was also used in some aircraft like the Lancaster and Wellington bombers during World War Two.

Diabetes NZ reaching out

Diabetes New Zealand is on a path to engage with the country and on Thursday night they stopped off in Ashburton.

Steve Crew, Diabetes New Zealand CEO, said the organisation wants to reach out to the wider diabetes community.

Around 260,000 people in New Zealand have diabetes, one in four have pre diabetes and 40 a day are diagnosed.

At the annual general meeting on Thursday, Crew spoke to people from Ashburton about some of the things the organisation wanted to do and listened to things the community wanted out of Diabetes New Zealand.

Recently, membership has become free for the organisation and they hope by doing this they can reach more people.

There are currently over 5000 members and Crew hopes by going free they can connect with the 260,000 people currently diagnosed.

Diabetes is a disease where the body is unable to regulate glucose levels in the blood.

However, there are a number different types of diabetes but the most common are type one, type two and gestational and it’s important to know the difference.

Type one is an auto-immune disease where the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin are attacked and can no longer function.

Type two, the most common, results when the body either doesn’t produce enough or doesn’t recognise the insulin produced.

It usually develops in people between 40-50 years old, but increasingly it has been developing more in teenagers and children.

Gestational diabetes is when a pregnant woman cannot produce enough insulin, usually during pregnancy, needs are two or three times higher.

Crew said part of their plan to grow their membership is through engaging more people on their social media and website.

He said there is a huge amount of information available on www.diabetes.org.nz or people are more than welcome to give him a personal call on 027 499 7142.

Chch earthquake Hundreds have reported feeling a moderate intensity magnitude 3.8 earthquake in Christchurch.

The earthquake’s epicentre was 17km below the surface, just 10km west of the city at around 3pm. Within 10 minutes of the shaking, more than 730 people reported feeling the earth move.

Many took to social media to comment on what they say was the first earthquake Christchurch has felt in a while.

“Must be the first quake I’ve felt here since June..haven’t missed them at all,” one Twitter user wrote.

Critical condition A man has fallen off the roof of a Palmerston North bar after being denied entry. The Herald understands the man, who was in his early 20s, had been denied entry earlier in the night from the Daily sports bar on Main St at about 12.50am yesterday. He had then been climbing around the side of the building to find another way to get in when he slipped, a source said. A police media spokeswoman confirmed the man fell from the roof. The man was taken to Palmerston North Hospital in a critical condition, but has since been transferred to Wellington Hospital. - NZME

15-year-old rescued

Police hunt ongoing

Ashburton welcomes a new benchmark in aged care.

Police have searched a Thames property in their hunt for a man they believe is armed following the theft of guns. They say Rameka Wikaira, aged 26, is considered to be armed and dangerous.

The police armed offenders squad joined Saturday afternoon’s search of a Thames property.

“After inquiries into recent burglaries and thefts in the Thames area, police were led to [a] Currie St address.”

“Mr Wikaira is still wanted in relation to the burglaries and for breaching his prison release conditions.” Wikaira is about 171cm tall and of medium to thin build.

Sergeant Russell Richards, of the Thames police, said Wikaira may have stolen firearms with him. “We would like to make it clear to friends and associates of his, there may be charges for anyone caught assisting him with avoiding Police.”

A 15-year-old mountain biker was winched to safety by a rescue helicopter on Saturday.

The boy had come off his bike and sustained injuries while riding in the Maitai Valley’s Sharlans Creek area, on the Kaka track. The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter was called to the incident at 11.30am. The crew winched the teen out of the area and he was taken to Christchurch Hospital.

Art Gallery Anzac project closing The Ashburton Art Gallery are hosting a WW1 talk at the Gallery on Saturday September 3 at 11am to mark the closing of their ANZAC project Our Name Liveth, Commemorating Our Fallen in the main foyer.

This insightful talk, Billy the Birdman by Kevin Soster will address the military career and life of Lieutenant William Leefe Robinson. Leefe (or Billy the Birdman as he was known by close family and friends) was the first British pilot to shoot down a German airship over

Britain during the First World War on September 3 1916.

This act was celebrated in the media and lead to Leffe being presented with the first Victoria Cross.

On September 3, one hundred years after Leefe shot down the airship, the gallery will honour Leefe’s memory by hosting this talk by Soster who has a family connection to Leefe.

Leefe’s citation reads: For most conspicuous bravery. He attacked an enemy airship under circumstances of great dif-

ficulty and danger, and sent it crashing to the ground as a flaming wreck. He had been in the air for more than two hours and had previously attacked another airship during his flight.

In May this year Soster visited Leefe’s grave in Harrow Weald and viewed his Victoria Cross which is on display at the Imperial War Museum in London.

This is a free public event which all are welcome to attend, and following the talk the gallery will provide a light lunch.

From hosting a touring Australian Choir to celebrating spring, the Mid Canterbury Choir will be having a busy few months.

Ruth Hall will join them on her violin as they sing Danny Boy. Olivia will also sing Pie Jesu and Julie, If Thou Lov’st Me. This will be the second concert at the helm for Kathy McKimmie assisted by accompanist Deborah Sloper.

The concert will be just under an hour long, so why not join them to Celebrate!

Chillingham Voices Community Choir is one of the most popular choirs in the Northern Rivers of New South Wales, Australia.

The choir is touring New Zealand in October and will be in Ashburton on Sunday October 9 performing songs including My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose, Drunken Sailor, Send in the Clowns, Mack the Knife, Bring Him Home, Fields of Gold, All that Jazz.

The motto of the choir is to sing as well as we possibly can and to have fun!

Their next concert is Messiah on Sunday November 6 at 5pm in St Andrew’s Church with organist Martin Setchell, soprano Lois Johnstone, mezzo soprano Clare Barton, bass Robert Tucker and tenor Ben Madden.

Save the church our next campaign?

hank God for the enthusiastic people who push the heritage cause.

While many of us admire old buildings for their charm and for the character they give a town, most of us don’t make any effort to ensure those buildings are loved, cared for and retained in their old age.

And because of our collective apathy, far too many of those buildings have been toppled and objections have only come to light after the event.

This time round the Historic Places Mid Canterbury group is making sure they’re signalling very early on in the site selection process for Ashburton’s new civic centre and library, that they won’t be letting two historic buildings be bulldozed without a fight.

The group fought long and hard to save Ashburton’s Railway station but in the end had to admit defeat. That was always going to be a tough one to win, given the years the station had been quietly sinking on its foundations.

This time round the fight will be to keep the bulldozer away from the Baring Square Methodist Church and the old county building, both fronting Baring Square east. And this time round the fight is likely to gather much greater public support.

The church, while its congregation might be ageing and dwindling in numbers, is still the focal point for Methodism in the district.

Its ties to the district are emotional and the church building itself is an impressive landmark.

Yes, it would need significant investment to strengthen and restore, but sometimes the price of preserving the past just has to be paid.

And likewise the county building. While the emotional ties may not be as strong, it is a gracious building that is very much a part of our heritage. The case for strengthening this has to be sound.

It’s already in use by the council for meetings and while a report was prepared for its strengthening in the past, the substance of that might be questioned today.

The final choice site for the civic centre and library won’t come easily and it won’t come without some angst. Let’s just hope that somewhere in the mix we can keep these two links with our past in some shape or form.

On health targets and Easter Sunday trading E

nsuring New Zealanders can access better, sooner, more convenient healthcare remains the Government’s number one funding priority, and the latest quarterly data shows our progress from the previous quarter has been largely maintained.

District health boards (DHBs) are once again performing more elective surgeries, surpassing the health target by eight per cent.

People are spending less time waiting in emergency departments with 94 per cent of patients admitted, discharged or transferred from the ED within six hours.

Immunisation coverage for our children remains at 93 per cent and more people are being supported to make healthy changes to their lifestyles by quitting smoking.

Access to elective surgery is a priority for this Government. We invested an extra $96 million over four years in Budget 2016 to ensure more New Zealanders receive the surgery they need.

The number of First Specialist Assessments has increased from 432,047 in 2008/09 to 551,013 in 2015/16.

As a result, the number of patients receiving elective surgery has increased from 117,951 in 2007/08 to 171,608 in 2015/16.

DHBs are working hard to continue to improve the services they deliver. The target for more heart and diabetes checks was again met this quarter with 91 per cent.

While it will remain an accountability measure for DHBs, this is the last quarter that the more heart and diabe-

tes checks target will be reported as it’s been replaced by the new childhood obesity health target.

The new health target will see 95 per cent of obese children identified in the Before School Check (B4 School Check) programme offered a referral to the services they and their family need to support healthy eating and activity.

By December 2017 over 4,000 children a year are expected to be supported to achieve a healthy weight.Focusing on results, we are working towards specific, measurable targets to improve the lives of families, particularly the most vulnerable. These latest health target results are a credit to our health workforce throughout the country.

Changes to Easter trading Whether or not retail businesses can trade on Easter Sunday will be decided by local territorial authorities in the future.

Last week, a Bill that enables territorial authorities to decide whether shops in their district can trade on Easter Sunday, passed its third reading in Parliament.

For many years now there has been debate and discussion about the ability of businesses to operate on Easter Sunday with many businesses wanting that opportunity while others believed the day should be protected.

The Bill passed last week is a pragmatic and well-balanced Bill providing choice for local communities.

Easter Sunday is very significant for many people and some people will want to spend it with their families rather than working, so protection has been put in place in the Bill for shop employees who would prefer not to work on Easter Sunday.

All shop employees will have the right to refuse to work on Easter Sunday without being required to give a reason.

And they will also be able to take a personal grievance if they are treated adversely or compelled to work on Easter Sunday.

Seeking support in Iowa Donald Trump warned Saturday of a “war on the American farmer,” telling a crowd in Iowa that rival Hillary Clinton “wants to shut down family farms” and implement antiagriculture policies.

Trump’s speech at the annual Roast and Ride fundraiser for Republican Sen. Joni Ernst came just hours after Clinton received her first national security briefing as the Democratic presidential nominee.

Trump skipped the 42-mile motorcycle ride that preceded the event in a state where polls show a tight contest, a rare bright spot for Trump amid a sea of challenging battleground states.

Joining him on stage were top Iowa Republicans — among them Ernst, Gov. Terry Branstad, Sen. Chuck Grassley and Rep. Steve King — in a rare show of support for a candidate who has struggled to unite his party.

through radical regulation, but also by raising taxes on family farms – and all businesses – to rates as high as nearly 50 per cent.”

Clinton’s campaign website touts a plan to increase funding to support farmers and ranchers in local food markets and regional food systems, saying she’ll create a “focused safety net to help family farms get through challenging times.”

It also says she plans to target federal resources in commodity payment, crop insurance, and disaster assistance programs to support family operations.

Branstad, in an interview with The Associated Press prior to the speech, said he felt that Trump could score points against Clinton by focusing on agricultural issues.

Branstad, whose son runs Trump’s campaign in the state, said he also hopes Trump would launch campaign ads there and that he sees the race as “about even.”

“I don’t like that but, hopefully, that’s going to change,” Branstad said.

Open to the public Paisley Park, the private estate and studio complex of the late rock superstar Prince, will open for daily public tours starting October 6. Bremer Trust, the trust company overseeing Prince’s estate, said in a statement that millions of Prince fans will get the chance to tour the 65,000-square-foot complex in the Minneapolis suburb of Chanhassen, where Prince collapsed in an elevator and died of an accidental overdose of the painkiller fentanyl in April. “Opening Paisley Park is something that Prince always wanted to do and was actively working on,” Prince’s sister, Tyka Nelson, said in the statement.

First Turkish death in Syrian campaign Backed by Turkish tanks and reports of airstrikes, Turkey-allied Syrian rebels clashed with Kurdish-led forces in northeastern Syria in a new escalation that further complicates the already protracted Syrian conflict.

Turkey’s military didn’t specify what the airstrikes hit, saying only that “terror groups” were targeted south of the village of Jarablus, where the clashes later ensued.

A Kurdish-affiliated group said their forces were the target and called the attack an “unprecedented and danger-

ous escalation.” If confirmed, it would be the first Turkish airstrikes against Kurdish allied forces on Syrian soil.

Late Saturday night, Turkey’s official news agency reported that one Turkish solider had been killed and three wounded by what it said was a Kurdish rocket attack in Jarablus, near where the fighting has raged.

It is the first reported Turkish fatality in Syria.

The new escalation highlights concerns that Turkey’s incursion into Syria this week could lead to an all-out confrontation between Ankara

and Syrian Kurds, both American allies, and hinder the war against the Islamic State group by diverting resources.

Sherwan Darwish, a spokesman for Kurdish-led forces in the village of Manbij, said on Twitter Saturday night: “While our forces fighting #IS Some #Turkey backed militias r attacking our positions & hampering our & Intl Coalition’s fight against terror.”

The clashes underscore Ankara’s determination to push back Kurdish forces from along its borders, and curb their ambitions to form a contiguous

entity in northern Syria.

Kurdish groups have already declared a semi-autonomous administration in Syria and control most of the border area.

Jarablus, and Manbij to the south liberated from IS fighters by Kurdish-led forces earlier this month, are essential to connecting the western and eastern semi-autonomous Kurdish areas in Syria.

Turkish officials said they will continue their offensive in Syria until there is no longer any “terror” threat to Turkey from its war-torn neighbor.

Rio favela chic leaves locals disgruntled

It may offer postcard perfect views of Ipanema beach and lush green mountains, but Bar da Laje is in the middle of one of Rio’s notoriously tough hillside favelas.

T

he sleek concrete and glass rooftop Bar da Laje is nestled in a sea of illegally built red brick houses in one of Rio De Janeiro’s notoriously tough hillside favelas.

Once considered a no-go area because of gang violence, the bar, in the city’s posher south, offers postcard perfect views of Ipanema beach and lush green mountains.

At night, middle class Brazilians and foreigners rub shoulders sipping cocktails.

Bar Da Laje is a vivid example of what is becoming known as “favela chic”, a phenomenon that has seen some parts of the enormous informal settlements once synonymous with poverty and violence become fashionable, home to edgy art galleries and up-market cafes.

Celebrities seeking the “favela experience” recently included the US singer Queen Latifah and film director Spike Lee, as waiters in T-shirts marked “Vidigal” served drinks and customers posed for selfies.

And while many residents living in and around Vidigal welcome gentrification that has seen an influx of new businesses serving more affluent clients, other longtime residents fear they will be priced out of their homes.

Chris Arsenault headed to Brazil to sample what is becoming known as favela chic – slum areas once synonymous with poverty and violence that have become fashionable homes to edgy art galleries and upmarket cafes.

“These changes aren’t good for us,” Barbara Nascimento, a Vidigal-born activist and literature professor told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

“I have many friends who have had to leave because they couldn’t afford the rent anymore.”

The tension sparked by wealthy outsiders gentrifying working class neighbourhoods is not unique to Rio de Janeiro. It’s a well documented phenomenon, from London’s East End to Sydney’s inner west and San Francisco’s mission district.

However it is even more complex in the vast, informal settlements of growing cities in developing nations like Brazil due to the lack of formal property title deeds, campaigners say.

On one hand, many residents want formal title deeds, both to allow them to use their property as collateral for bank loans and to provide protection in case of land disputes.

On the other hand, the lack of

formal title plays a key role in the supply and demand cycle, ensuring that these neighbourhoods remain as a stock of affordable housing.

Additionally, legal titles can pave the way for access to services such as electricity and water, improving quality of life.

But they also formalise residents’ relationship with the state authorities and the taxation system - a status not always welcomed by poorer residents.

Ultimately, property experts say, developers are more likely to buy up land in slum areas if titles are available, pushing prices up and locals out.

“The interest of real-estate developers in the favela areas is huge,” Edison Ferrari, director of investment for the multinational property brokerage firm CBRE, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

Rio’s unique geography, where a series of tunnels through mountains separate different parts of

the city, has made Vidigal especially appealing to foreigners and investors.

“In the south zone (where Vidigal is located) it is almost impossible to find pieces of land for new developments.”

However while land around Vidigal is clearly seen as a potentially lucrative investment, laws governing favelas and the “big problem in terms of titles” has stopped institutional investors from buying properties there, Ferrari said.

In the absence of large property firms developing high-end apartment blocks or other major construction in the area due to a lack of clear property deeds, niche investors have seen big opportunities.

And it is here that locals say they are feeling the effects.

Nascimento estimates that rents in Vidigal have tripled since 2007, though formal statistics on rent increases or the number of people moving into the neigh-

bourhood do not exist.

“The prices are abusive; they’ve gone up so much,” said Jose Ferreira, a coffee vendor who has lived in Vidigal for more than 40 years.

Ferreira said rent for his onebedroom apartment has doubled to 800 reais ($A333.18) since 2011, when police “pacified” the community as part of a drive to cut crime ahead of the Olympics.

“Foreigners started coming in and the prices started going up,” Ferreira told the Thomson Reuters Foundation, a sentiment that was echoed by other residents.

It’s unclear exactly how many foreigners live in Vidigal today, but some estimate there are more than 10,000 residents - and locals observe many more outsiders are moving in.

“Sometimes it feels like there are more foreigners than locals,” Aline Gomes, a student shopping in a local news agent, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

Local residents don’t have the money to party at the new bars or eat in pop-up sushi restaurants, leaving some feeling like outsiders in their own neighbourhood, Nascimento added.

“People who are coming in want the favela experience without the favelados (locals).”

Hammers see off North Otago

Mid Canterbury took maximum points with a 40-32 victory in their opening Heartland Championship fixture at the Ashburton Showgrounds on Saturday after being pushed to the very end by a defiant North Otago.

Recording a bonus point win and defending the Hanan Shield for the sixth time would have been the main objective on day one – regardless of the overall performance – but the Hammers will hope for a better start against Buller next week.

Mid Canterbury’s lethargy was punished by Shae Tucker four minutes into the new season as the centre put the Old Golds ahead with a fine individual try.

First five Josh Casey added the extras to put the visitors 8-0 up with the new scoring system awarding six points for a try and two points for conversions, drop goals and penalties.

North Otago were quickly back on the attack after kick off and extended their lead when hooker Joe Pickett bundled over the line.

Casey was on target again from his conversion to double North Otago’s lead.

The Hammers then began to stir with the hard-running midfield pairing of Nete Caucau and Koli Taminitoakula testing the North Otago defence, but it was skipper Jon Dampney that would eventually put Mid Canterbury’s first points of the season on the board.

The loose forward dotted down in the 22nd minute before first five Jarred Percival’s conversion rattled the post and went over to half the deficit.

Less than a minute later the home side scored again with Percival producing his first of two excellent individual tries.

The no.10 ran into Caucau’s classy offload and put the hammer down from just inside North Otago’s half to cross over unchallenged, but failed to convert his try.

Mid Canterbury continued to dominate in the forwards and took the lead for the first time with five minutes remaining of the first forty.

A prolonged spell of pressure allowed Irish prop Mike Lynch to bundle over, but Percival was off target from the boot, taking his first half tally to one successful conversion from three attempts as Mid Canterbury headed to the sheds with a 20-16 lead.

touch down under the posts.

Casey converted his own try with ease as North Otago reclaimed the lead, but it was short lived.

As the old adage goes - you’re never more vulnerable than when you’ve just scored.

A lackluster pass from Tucker was neatly intercepted by Percival, who took off to go down under the posts for his second try of the clash before slotting the conversion to put Mid Canterbury ahead 28-24.

North Otago reacted as you would have expected in a clash that threatened to sway either way throughout, and were given a boost when imposing second five Cauca was yellow carded.

In Caucau’s absence, the Old Golds poured phase after phase on a stretched Mid Canterbury defence and eventually found an opening as wing Simon Lilicama sliced through and dived over in the corner.

The ball rattled the post before going over from Casey’s conversion to put North Otago 32-28 up, but the action didn’t end there.

The Hammers were quickly on the attack, pressuring a tiring North Otago defence.

Decision ‘the right one’ All Blacks coach Steve Hansen says SANZAAR’s decision not to cite Owen Franks over an alleged eye gouge on Wallaby Kane Douglas shows the danger of rushing to judgement without viewing all the angles.

Wallabies coach Michael Cheika said he expected Franks to have faced sanction following Saturday night’s 29-9 defeat in Wellington, claiming the incident would be “pretty hard to miss” for match review officials.

However, no action was taken on match review, neither team referred any incidents from the match to SANZAAR, and Hansen said he was pleased the correct process had been followed.

“You’ve got to be really, really careful until you see all the views, and social media I think alerted everyone to it,” Hansen told reporters on Sunday morning.

“They certainly don’t get all the views.

“There’s a process and that process is followed and whoever was running it has obviously seen all the angles and believes there’s nothing to answer for.”

Hansen said the incident where Franks grabbed Wallabies lock Douglas around the head was an “unfortunate byproduct” of mauling rules and claimed the same thing happened to his players on two or three other occasions.

“The only way you can get there is through clambering over the top, and then that creates a response, people try and pull them out of the way and the only thing they can use is the head area,” he said.

“We’ll look at that and try and make sure we don’t go around that area because it creates a problem.

“But if there’s no case to answer, there’s no case to answer.”

Hansen said he had nothing to add regarding Cheika’s strong post-match comments on the incident.

“It’s been dealt with, end of story,” he said.

Concussed duo Ryan Crotty and Codie Taylor have been cleared and will be available for the Test on September 10 against an Argentina team coming off a 26-24 win over South Africa.

The return of the Crusaders pair will help relieve thinning stocks in the midfield and at hooker.

Crotty’s absence opened the door for Anton Lienert-Brown to make a solid debut at second fiveeighth in the 29-9 win over Australia in Wellington.

Hooker Taylor was concussed in the opening minutes of the 42-8 win in Sydney a week earlier, following a season-ending injury to Nathan Harris.

James Parsons came off the bench in Wellington to replace first-choice Dane Coles but may not be retained for the Hamilton Test.

Coach Steve Hansen says some players will be released for NPC matches next week to give them game time.

The squad regathers in Hamilton on Sunday next week.

Hansen says centre George Moala (knee) is unlikely to face the Pumas, with his return targeted for either the following week’s Test against the Springboks in Christchurch or the subsequent away Tests against Argentina and South Africa.

Big Mid Canty wins over Old Golds

Mid Canterbury rugby teams throughout the age-groups performed well against North Otago sides on Saturday.

Of the six fixtures played from under-13 to senior level against the Old Golds, Mid Canterbury

won five. In the under-13s, Mid Canterbury Green downed North Otago under-13 45-40, while Mid Canterbury Gold were in excellent form against North Otago under-12 for a 42-0 victory at Hinds.

Mid Canterbury’s under-14s were also convincing against

their North Otago counterparts with a 60-27 win and the under16s took 40-29 victory.

Meanwhile, Mid Canterbury A lost out 22-13 to North Otago in their Hanan Cup clash and Mid Canterbury under-18 fell to a 16-3 loss to Southland in Dunedin.

100 race wins for Whincup Holden’s Jamie Whincup has become the second driver in Supercars history to claim 100 career race wins.

The six-time champion Jamie reached his ton Whincup with victory in the 200km race at Sydney Motorsport Park yesterday.

Whincup, who finished second in Saturday’s race, jumped veteran Craig Lowndes in the pits midway through to streak to his third win of the year.

The Red Bull Racing star (2109pts) now holds a 137-point lead in the championship standings over team-mate Shane van Gisbergen (1972).

Lowndes, celebrating an unprecedented 600th career start, came home second after leading for the early part of the race.

The 42-year-old is the only other driver to have posted 100 wins and holds the record with 105 victories.

But Whincup has taken far less time to reach the milestone, with the 33-year-old’s 100th race win coming in just his 398th start.

Ford’s Chaz Mostert, who started from pole position, finished third as his wait for a win in 2016 continues.

Van Gisbergen, who won Saturday’s race, finished fifth after a run-in with Volvo’s James Moffat on lap 48.

Moffat was issued a drivethrough penalty for his role in the accident, which cost him a top 10 finish.

Defending series champion Mark Winterbottom has relinquished third place in the title standings to Lowndes after completing a shocking weekend with a 14th-placed finish.

The next round of the championship will be the Sandown 500 on September 18.

Canterbury thrash Tasman in Mitre 10 Cup There are seven rounds to go, but lock Canterbury in for top spot going into the Mitre 10 Cup playoffs.

Hardly a bold statement, given they have won eight of the nine titles on offer since 2008, but it is one which must be hammered home based on their impressive thrashings of high profile teams to start the season.

Their 45-14 victory over Tasman comes on the back of their opening 43-3 shellacking of Auckland, and makes it consecu-

tive hefty wins over highly rated opponents, with both Tasman and Auckland tipped as semifinal sides by the bookmakers.

Without a cavalcade of All Blacks, Canterbury have the next best thing to anchor their championship chase – All Blacks siblings.

While Luke Whitelock, Scott Barrett and Daniel Lienert-Brown all had varying impacts on the game, 19-year-old Jordie Barrett was immense in just his second game at the provincial level.

A 25-point haul was his reward for a quality performance, showing pinpoint range with his boot and linking well from fullback in a multi-pronged playmaking combination with Richie Mo’unga.

However, Canterbury’s handling errors meant it took a while to break down an industrious Tasman side, who found themselves within five points in the second half as rookie winger Tima Faingaanuku powered his way across the line.

But while Barrett was marshal-

ling the backline, the Canterbury forward pack were making their mark, with several powerful scrums leading to important field position from where skipper Whitelock could opt to take the points or go for the corner.

Whitelock led from the front with 17 carries for 56 metres, making a team-high eight tackles and linking well with Matt Todd and Tom Sanders in what is surely the best loose forward trio in the competition.

Warriors out of NRL title hunt

The Warriors will miss the NRL finals series for a fifth consecutive season after two late Wests Tigers tries gave the side a controversial 30-24 win in Auckland.

Five-eighth Mitchell Moses and centre Kevin Naiqama scored in the 76th and 79th minutes to break the Warriors’ hearts.

Both sides required a victory at Mt Smart Stadium to stay in the finals hunt after losing two games on the bounce and they produced an exciting spectacle.

However two controversial disallowed try decisions against the Warriors for obstruction – and the Tigers’ late tries, both after the Warriors failed to control the high ball – meant the Sydney-based outfit hold out for at least a week longer.

An inauspicious opening period sprung into life in the seventh minute when Tigers fullback David Nofoaluma was found to have fumbled a Manu Vatuvei grubber.

Second rower Bodene Thompson strolled over from the resulting scrum to put the Warriors in front against his former side.

The Tigers drew level in the 19th minute when young gun Luke Brooks made a line break before prop Sauaso Sue barged over from a resulting play.

The Tigers hit the lead six minutes later after the Warriors gifted good field position with backto-back penalties and Woods crashed over under the posts.

The Warriors hit back with two tries in two minutes.

Prolific centre Solomone Kata crossed after the Warriors created an overload on the left flank, before stalwart Simon Mannering returned his side to the lead at 18-12 with a try when centre Blake Ayshford palmed a Shaun Johnson bomb back.

Kata then wasted a golden opportunity to extend his side’s lead when the ball was punched out of his hands as he went to score, before having a try disallowed on the half-time buzzer.

The match erupted in the 56th minute when Tigers winger Josh Addo-Carr dashed 70 metres to cross and level the scores again.

A try to returning utility Tuimoala Lolohea put the Warriors back in front in the 65th minute, before the Warriors had another try ruled out for obstruction two minutes later.

Sue scored his second try to level the scores yet again, before the last-gasp tries to Moses and Naiqama both following poor defence from kicks - left the Warriors to ponder what might have been yet again.

Masters fall to narrow loss

Mid Canterbury Football’s masters’ team brought the curtain down on their season with a 1-0

loss to Parklands United Black at the Ashburton Domain on Saturday.

In an end-to-end game the two sides headed to the sheds all

square at 0-0 at halftime, but Iain Ansell scored the tie’s only goal in the 60th minute to secure the win for the Christchurch side.

United and Chelsea set early EPL pace Substitute Marcus Rashford scored an injury-time winner as Manchester United beat Hull City 1-0 at the weekend.

Rashford tapped in from close range in the 92nd minute as United matched Chelsea with three wins from three to open the Premier League season.

“I think we did everything to

win,” United manager Jose Mourinho said.

“I know when you score in minute 90-something we always speak about a bit of luck but I think the reality is that we deserved it.

“In the second half we were so dominant, so intense in our attacking that I always believed the goal would arrive.” Hull’s David

Meyler had a chance for a late winner but fired over the bar and visitors United struck moments later.

Wayne Rooney carried the ball along the byline and sent in a pass which the 18-year-old Rashford, making his first appearance of the season, steered home.

Serie A match dedicated to Italy quake victims By andrew dampF Juventus has won 1-0 at Lazio in a Serie A match dedicated to the victims of the earthquake in central Italy.

Fans held aloft banners to mourn the nearly 300 people killed in last week’s quake, and a minute of silence was observed before kick-off.

Also, Lazio’s shirts featured a message that read “Noi con voi” - “We’re with you” - including an image of the clock tower in the hardest-hit town of Amatrice, which was stopped at 3.36am when the quake hit.

Amatrice and other towns affected are in the Lazio region.

In the 66th minute, Sami Khedira took a pass from Paulo Dybala and angled his shot inside the far post as Lazio’s defence appeared distracted by prized Juventus signing Gonzalo Higuain, who came on a minute earlier.

Khedira also scored in Juve’s seasonopening 2-1 win over Fiorentina last

weekend. “It wasn’t easy to play in this heat against a Lazio side that was well organised,” Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said.

“In the first half, they closed off all the open spaces but in the second half we played well. We’ve started better than last year.”

Last season, Juventus lost its opening two matches.

In the day’s other match, Arkadiusz Milik and Jose Callejon each scored twice for Napoli in a 4-2 win over visiting AC Milan.

Poland forward Milik scored twice in the first half then M’Baye Niang and Suso drew Milan level after the break.

Callejon got the decider in the 74th then added another in stoppage time.

Milan ended with nine men. It was a packed house at Celtic Rugby Club on Saturday night for the annual Ashburton Boxing Tournament.

The tournament boasted a 15-fight card with fighters travelling from across the South Island and Wellington to entertain a strong local crowd.

Carlos Earley and Ryan McLaughlan got the evening’s action underway in their minicadet bout over three 90-second rounds.

Both fighters received standing eight counts but McLaughlan was the aggressor throughout and deserved his unanimous points decision victory.

The next fight between Sione Vaka and Jason O’Brien in the elite 81kg category had all the makings a thrilling encounter with neither man letting up over three intense two-minute rounds.

Vaka landed some heavy combinations but, to O’Brien’s credit, he continued to come forward.

O’Brien had some joy in the second round, catching Vaka cleanly on several occasions as the Burnham-based boxer appeared to be running out of the gas.

But Vaka did enough in the final round, setting up well behind his stiff jab to see himself through to a unanimous decision victory.

Papanui’s Tony Cheng and Dunedin’s Nik Ruebal came together for their elite 60kg in the third bout of the night.

Cheng’s quick hands and illusiveness saw him land at will at times, but Ruebal continued to search for an opening throughout the first round.

The bout would have no victor as an exhibition, but the more experienced McGlynn got the better of the exchanges throughout a valiant display from a deter-

mined Paris.

Split decision victories for Heidi Reza and Ra Andrews over George Harvey and Harry Waters followed before Mike Maireroa stopped Ed Clapham in their elite 85kh clash.

Connor Perriton was the second local boxer in action, he fought Invercargill’s Jessie Hawkins in the junior 69kg category and was stopped by a body punch in the first round.

Split decision and technical knockout wins for Leroy Mutu and Vajay Aryal followed before

the main event of the evening.

Ashburton’s Sam Watt, who fights out of Papanui but dons the green of Celtic on the rugby paddock, took on Wellington’s Thomas Russell in an elite 91kg bout over three, three-minute rounds.

Russell caused Watt problems in the opening round but failed to make an impression in the second and third as the national super heavyweight champion took control of the contest to earn a unanimous decision victory and round off a fine night’s boxing.

Neil Wagner says New Zealand failed to exploit helpful bowling conditions on the first day of the second Test against South Africa in Centurion.

Wagner was the pick of the Black Caps attack, taking 2-51 as the home side reached a meritorious 283-3 at stumps at SuperSport Park after being inserted.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson’s decision at the toss was driven by a green pitch which offered plenty of assistance.

However, new ball pair Trent Boult (053) and Tim Southee (0-74) were guilty of an inconsistent line and length as the top four South African batsmen all passed 50.

Left-armer Wagner, who broke the opening stand between the aggressive Quinton de Kock (82) and Stephen Cook (56), said South Africa were let off the hook.

“We didn’t start too well with the ball and then later on started bowling better,” he said.

“We pride ourselves on being a good bowling unit but didn’t really do the things we say we’re going to do - to bowl in partnerships.

“Sometimes you get it right, sometimes you don’t.”

Wagner describes the state of the game as evenly-poised but admits the tourists will need early wickets on Sunday, not easily achieved against the well-disciplined Proteas batsmen. JP Duminy is at the crease on 67.

“They showed a lot of patience, they left well and they played the ball really late so there were a lot of nicks that went square of the wicket or didn’t carry,” he said.

“There was a lot of movement and when we got it in the right areas, there was enough there to keep us interested.”

It was an emotional opening day for Pretoria-born Wagner, 30, who has become a key bowler for New Zealand in the last 12 months.

The ground was one where he grew up watching the likes of South African pace bowlers Allan Donald and Shaun Pollock terrorise visiting batsmen.

“I had a lot of goose bumps when I walked out,” he said.

“It was the first time in my life when I had my whole family and a lot of my friends that I grew up with setting next to me in the field and watching a Test match.

“It was a special moment for me.”

Proteas in good shape

Jebet smashes world record

By Angelo Risso Veteran netball coach Norma Plummer was able to read her South Africa side so well, she could see their mistakes before they happened.

But at least, she said, they were having a crack.

The Proteas fell to a 68-43 loss to Australia in their Netball Quad Series opener in Auckland, having been outclassed in all thirds of the court.

But Plummer, a former world champion as coach of Australia, was delighted with her side’s display.

The Proteas had bettered their 35-point drubbing against the Diamonds in last year’s World Cup and were clearly on the rise, she said.

Shooter Lenize Potgieter had netted a respectable 30 points from 27 attempts, while centre Erin Burger made good yardage in the midcourt.

“We’re making those inroads and we have to be able to keep challenging ourselves,” Plummer said after Saturday’s match.

“We only have to get all that fine-tuning done - the trouble is that I don’t have them every day and I don’t have a daily training environment.”

Plummer has been travelling between her native Australia and South Africa while at the helm of the Proteas, attempting to get the side in shape.

On a recent trip to the Rainbow Nation, Plummer held a seminar for coaches in the hope of accelerating local players’ development.

Further mentoring was required at all levels of the game.

“They play an awful lot of netball over there game-wise, but they don’t do the intense training that’s required,” Plummer said.

Diamonds shooters Caitlin Bassett and Caitlin Thwaites bullied Plummer’s defensive rearguard in Auckland, netting goals with ease.

Both goal shooters, towering at 193cm and 188cm respectively, exploited their height and reach advantage over Proteas goal keeper Phumza Maweni.

Plummer said Maweni, who only started playing the game at 28 years old, was doing a good job in the circumstances.

“Give me Phumza every day for 12 months and she’ll compete,” Plummer said.

“We have to teach her how to correct and come off the body and learn how to rotate, that’s all the process.”

Fellow defender Karla Mostert, 26, echoed her coach’s message.

“Our league back home isn’t this intense, so being exposed to that type of intensity is what we need,” Mostert said.

“We’re taking it step by step, you can’t take the big steps yet, just to become better every time you play.”

Diamonds coach Lisa Alexander was unsurprised Plummer, her former coach, had the Proteas in good shape.

They had clearly improved in the past 12 months, she said.

“They’ll continue to get better and the more they get that experience, the more they’ll improve,” Alexander said.

South Africa will now travel to Hamilton to take on the Silver Ferns on Wednesday.

Genevieve LaCaze has carried her stellar Olympic form into the Paris Diamond League meet, smashing the Australian record in the fastest women’s 3000m steeplechase of all-time.

Kenyan-born Olympic champion Ruth Jebet from Bahrain stripped more than six seconds off the world record with a winning time of eight minutes 52.78 seconds.

LaCaze took advantage of the cracking pace to finish sixth in 9:14.28.

She was more than four seconds inside the previous national record of 9:18.35 set by Donna MacFarlane in 2008.

LaCaze, 27, has just about lost count of the number of personal bests she has set in a breakout 2016 campaign.

“PB number 15 ...... I hope I can keep this up. Still have a few more races this season,” she tweeted.

She and countrywoman Madeline Heiner-Hills both also contested the steeplechase and 5000m finals at the Rio Olympics.

Not to be outdone, LaCaze’s partner Ryan Gregson bettered his PB in the non-championship men’s 3000m in Paris with a time of 7:44.90.

Earlier this month in Rio, Gregson became the first Australian man in 40 years to contest an Olympic 1500m final.

And to round off a superb evening in Paris for Nic Bideau’s training group, Zoe Buckman improved her PB by finishing 11th in the women’s 1500m in 4:03.22.

Rising sprint star Ella Nelson was fifth in the 200m in 22.82.

Scott vaults into PGA play-off contention

Adam Scott finally stopped thinking about his putting and he has been rewarded for a carefree attitude in the opening US PGA Tour Playoff event.

Starting the day seven off the pace, Scott fired a six-under-65 at Bethpage Black to rocket to seven under and into third place for The Barclays.

The Queenslander trails American Rickie Fowler (68) by two and sits one back of second placed Patrick Reed (71).

World No.1 and defending champion Jason Day is four shots off the lead at five under and tied sixth after a round of 70.

Scott started his hot round by holing out for eagle from 95 yards and added six birdies with just two bogeys.

After two rounds of fruitless putting, coming off the back of a few months of the same, Scott finally broke the shackles.

He made just 30 feet of total putts in the opening round and 58 feet in round two but come Saturday he dropped in a whopping 150 feet of putts.

“I just really tried to clear my mind,” Scott said. “When you’re not making them and they are always a little bit short, you start thinking about too many things and stroke and line, feel, speed, all this kind of stuff.

“I just thought, forget about it all and just go with instinct.

“It was good to just simply forget about everything with the putting, technical and feel and anything, and just kind of look and stroke and not care where it went.

Rahal wins IndyCar race at Texas Graham Rahal made a last-lap pass and just held on to beat James Hinchcliffe in the closest finish ever for an IndyCar race at Texas.

The only time Rahal led the race — competed over a 2½-month span — was when he sliced to the bottom of the track coming off of the backstretch on that final lap Saturday night. He won by eight-thousandths (0.008) of a second, crossing the line only inches and side-by-side with Hinchcliffe, with Tony Kanaan right behind them.

Rahal almost celebrated a bit too early, pumping a fist over his head just before crossing the checkered flag with Hinchcliffe right beside him and still making a final push for the victory.

Hinchcliffe had led the Firestone 600 for 76 days. He was leading when the race was initially red-flagged June 12 because of rain after only 71 of 248 laps, and dominated after it resumed until three late restarts.

Rahal’s fourth career win came at the high-banked, 1½-mile-oval where four years ago he appeared headed for victory before brushing the wall on the last lap and finishing second to Justin Wilson.

Hinchcliffe led 188 laps overall in the race, including 157 of the 177 laps run Saturday night.

Series points leader Simon Pagenaud was fourth, and extended his lead to from 20 to 28 points over Team Penske teammate Will Power with two races left. Power, who won four of the previous six races with runner-up finishes in the other two, was eighth at Texas.

New Zealand’s Scott Dixon wrecks in Turn two late in the IndyCar auto race at Texas Motor Speedway, at the weekend.

Carpenter was within about two seconds of the lead on Lap 213 when Scott Dixon, trying to get back on the lead lap, made contact coming off the frontstretch. That sent Dixon spinning, but Carpenter was able to stay on the track and even took the lead after that.

After the ensuing caution, Hinchcliffe and Carpenter restarted 1-2 on lap 221, and Carpenter went low coming off the backstretch and led at the line by a matter of inches. Hinchcliffe went back in front on the next lap, and was still there when Carpenter got loose coming out of Turn 4 on lap 225 and made contact with Helio Castroneves and slammed into the wall to end his race.

There was one more caution after that, when lead-lap car Mikhail Aleshin crashed, setting up the final sprint to the finish. - AP

“For that to be the answer, is nice, because I don’t think there’s any major issues.”

Scott will attempt to keep the roll going tomorrow as he chases a third win of the year and 14th US PGA Tour title.

“If I could finish the year off the way I started, it would salvage some of the disappointment of not really contending in the majors this year,” he added.

Day, the defending champion, was left to rue another round of wild driving.

He hit just three fairways and with 14 through three rounds he ranks last in the field for driving accuracy.

“If I can find my golf ball, I might have a good chance at winning the tournament.

Today I just had no clue where it was going,” Day said.

“I was missing both left and right. The biggest thing for me was to try to commit to a golf shot. I was standing over there going, just get it down there somewhere instead of committing to a target, committing to a shot and hitting it.

“I think if I can have a decent shot at hitting fairways tomorrow, I might give myself an opportunity.”

Day and Scott are looking to become the first Australian in the 10-year history of the playoffs to win it all at next month’s Tour Championship, including the $US10million bonus.

John Senden, who faces elimination from the playoffs if he doesn’t perform well, put his future on the line yesterday after a tough 75 left him tied for 55th.

He is on the elimination bubble.

Medals for our rowers New Zealand have claimed four medals at the under-23 rowing world championships in Rotterdam, including gold to the men’s coxed four. The Kiwi rowers also bagged silvers in the men’s quadruple sculls and lightweight women’s double sculls, along with a bronze in the men’s coxless four. The winning crew comprised Martyn O’Leary, Cameron Webster, Charles Rogerson, Phillip Wilson and cox Sam Bosworth.

The Futsal Roadshow arrived in Mid Canterbury yesterday as the

Futsal Whites took on a South American All-Star team at the EA Networks Centre Stadium.

The South American All-Stars

included two local players with Argentinian ex-pats Luciano Drudi and Agustin Maunier helping their team to a 5-5 draw

with the Futsal Whites. The senior tie followed age-group skills sessions, with budding futsal players honing their futsal flair.

Accusations dismissed

BY DANIEL GILHOOLY All Blacks coach Steve Hansen says Australian accusations of a secret meeting with the Bledisloe Cup Test referee are wide of the mark.

But he can understand the claims from Wallabies counterpart Michael Cheika, describing them as those of a desperate foe who has been backed into the corner after a second successive heavy defeat.

Cheika hogged the headlines in the fallout of Australia’s 29-9 loss in Wellington on Saturday, launching a multi-layered critique of match officials.

He claimed the Australian Rugby Union has filed an official complaint because Hansen and French referee Romain Poite had met in the days leading up to the

Test. That would have been in contravention of World Rugby rules, as the other team should have been alerted to the meeting.

However, Hansen said yesterday he hadn’t met Poite.

“It’s quite sad that that’s come out because it’s not true,” he said. “We don’t meet the ref, haven’t done for 18-24 months, because it’s just a waste of time.”

Hansen conceded that he and scrum coach Mike Cron had met South African whistler Jaco Peyper, who controlled last week’s Test in Sydney, and was an assistant in Wellington.

That meeting had been called

by Peyper, to discuss the Sydney Test which New Zealand won 428, Hansen said.

The two coaches shook hands at a post-match function.

Hansen says his relationship with the man who usurped him as World Rugby’s coach of the year in 2015 - despite the All Blacks defending their World Cup crown - is cordial.

He can understand where his rival’s angst is coming from.

“You’ve got two fierce competitors and one of them’s going through a tough time,” he said.

“They’ve just lost six games in a row and I can only imagine what we’d be like in that situation.”

However, Hansen says criticism of match officials needs to be consistent.

He took a mild dig at Cheika by pointing out that the Wallabies coach was silent when a contentious decision went in Australia’s favour to decide last year’s quarter-final win over Scotland.

Cheika’s main beef with Poite was that he didn’t take time to listen to the concerns of Australian captain Stephen Moore.

Hansen says Moore, who began the game by questioning a number of rulings, needs to ask himself why he was later ignored

by Poite. “If you listen to the commentary, you’ve got to pick your moments.

“The best captains in the world try to pick their moments.

They don’t try to talk to (the referee) about everything.”

Hansen says the Wallabies’ low stocks also explained their niggly on-field approach.

He suggested they had been too passive in Sydney but then over-reacted with aggression that may have taken some of their focus away from the game plan.

Walsh sets NZ record Tom Walsh has set a new New Zealand and Oceania outdoor record with victory at the Diamond League event in Paris. The Rio shot put bronze medallist has thrown 22 metres exactly to break the mark.

Walsh’s big throw came in the final round, after earlier breaking his former personal best and national mark with 21.81 in the second round.

Walsh claimed the win over Olympic champion Ryan Crouser by just a centimetre.
