Learning about farming from the ground up

Rabobank is determined to change the attitude towards careers in agriculture, one student at a time.

It’s using a well tested Australian farm experience programme that gives city school students an opportunity to experience working and living on a farm to achieve that goal.

This week, seven Christchurch secondary school students have been hosted by farm families around mid and central Canterbury. They’ve spent their days working alongside farmers and

yesterday wrapped up their agricultural experience with a field trip around the Ashburton District and to the Dunsandel Synlait plant.

While the students were all from the city, each joined the programme because of a desire to learn more about work options in the agricultural sector.

For Year 13 student Jack Goodgame from Riccarton High, the experience confirmed his desire to make a career in agriculture.

He came with some work experience on his grandfather’s farm behind him and said the Rabobank programme gave him an

opportunity to look at a range of farming options.

“It’s a 10 out of 10,” he said.

Bella Howe from Cashmere High had studied agriculture as a subject option for her first three years at secondary school, but said it was not available at Year 12.

She’s experienced first-hand the negative way agriculture is perceived as a career option but said that had not deterred her from looking at options in the industry for her future.

“Agriculture is seen as a drop out option and that makes it tough with so many kids behaving badly in the classroom. There’s a

lot more opportunities in agriculture than just farming,” she said.

Jack agreed, saying his school did not offer agriculture as an option, but at Year 13 he had been able to take a trade course two days a week that included an element of agriculture.

“There’s a lot of work to do in schools that’s needed to raise agriculture’s profile,” he said.

Ross and Rochelle Hewson hosted the group at their Chertsey farm where the students were able to trace the journey of French fries from the paddock to the frier.

The Hewsons grow 330 hectares of potatoes which are har-

vested, stored and then trucked to McCain’s Timaru factory for processing.

A survey commissioned by Rabobank found that teenagers living in New Zealand’s cities and regional towns had an alarming lack of knowledge when it came to farming and food production.

Of those surveyed, 81 per cent said they knew little or nothing about farming and food production; 8 per cent had never been on a farm, 35 per cent had visited a farm less than three times.

Just 10 per cent of the teenagers were interested in a career in farming.

Bringing the eyes of NZ to Methven

The local government eyes of New Zealand will focus on Methven in two weeks when the village hosts New Zealand’s biennial community boards’ conference.

Across New Zealand there are 110 community boards, running the business of their small communities and working as their link with larger territorial local authorities.

Methven’s five-member board and the Ashburton District Council are hosting the 2017 event which has attracted a strong lineup of speakers and a large body of registrations.

At the helm of the organising team locally is district councillor Liz McMillian.

She knows better than most the workings of community boards having logged nine years as a Methven member, six of those as its chairwoman.

While the majority of registrations have come from South Island board members, there is also a strong northern contingent coming to the conference,

McMillan said. Methven might be hosting the event, but the task of putting the programme of speakers together has been carried out by the community board’s executive.

This year’s theme is 1 + 1 = 3, or how boards can achieve more for their communities with the resources they are given.

The conference programme includes several speakers, one of whom is local youth leader Sam Johnson, as well as a number of workshops.

Also up for grabs are several awards for projects nominated by individual boards. Methven has not entered a project this year.

The conference opens on Thursday night with a social function, followed by two full working days, before a gala dinner and awards ceremony on Saturday night. Methven’s Heritage Centre will host the event.

Retired Ashburton District councillor Don McLeod is the conference MC. The New Zealand Community Boards conference will be held in Methven from May 11 to 13.

“It’s great, you really do become family. Like brothers and sister,” Dugan said.

He said they play “a bit of everything, originals and a lot of tributes as well”.

“We do what the people want to hear.”

Barbecue for some of NZ’s worst inmates cancelled A barbecue planned at Auckland Prison for some of New Zealand’s most high-profile and worst offending inmates has been cancelled as it was not authorised by management.

The barbecue was planned for inmates in the prison’s special needs unit at the Paremoremo facility next weekend.

There are currently about 48 men in the unit – generally used to house child and other sex offend-

ers who are not safe in the general prison population – including serial rapist Nicholas Reekie.

In May 2003 Reekie was found guilty of a 1992 kidnapping and rape for which David Dougherty was previously wrongly convicted.

Each crime was committed while he was on parole.

He was sentenced to preventive detention, with a minimum non-parole period of 25 years but

that was reduced to 20 years on appeal. A prison source said inmates in other units at the prison were angry about the barbecue as such treats never happened in their wings.

He said barbecues had been held in the special needs unit previously, but once prison management heard about them they were banned in future.

Only the prison director can authorise such an event – and he

had not done so for the unit.

“No one around the rest of the prison is getting a barbecue, so why should these odd-bods and deviants in the special needs unit?” the source said.

“I’m told they were organised by the unit manager who does not have the authority to make these decisions.

“It’s just outrageous ... it’s absolutely disgusting, I can’t imagine what some of the victims of these

guys are going to think.”

He did not know the reason or occasion for the barbecue, but said it was “disgusting” that the sex offenders in the unit were being treated.

“This simply sends the wrong message to these inmates, it tells them they are something special.

“And they’re sitting down to a barbecue which other inmates can only dream of – it’s just ridiculous.”

Methven beauty operators join forces

Four Methven women have joined forces to open a new beauty space, offering everything from cut and colour to botox and blood facials.

The Consortium held its opening night last night, at its sleek and modern premises, in the Methven Mall.

Small town Methven has been transformed into uptown New York at the commercial lease site, with a polished concrete floor, mezzanine levels, steelwork, and abstract art, contrasting a French vintage and industrial vibe.

The services offered are also akin to those in bigger centres.

The Consortium encompasses the four separate businesses of Millie Kershaw’s Skin Therapy beauty salon, Bex Quinn’s Studio 85 hair salon, Vanessa Kelk’s Arch Semi-Permanent Eyebrow Styling and Dr Cheryl Tallon’s Face Medical practice.

Kelk said it had made perfect sense for the four to set up at the same site.

“It is such a great mix of women here,” she said.

And while the joint premises is a new initiative, the practitioners themselves are established operators in the town.

Their aim was the same, to empower all women who walk through their doors to feel great about themselves.

The council would do its best to maintain a satisfactory water supply to all affected residents during the shutdown, but due to the gravity-fed nature of the race, stockwater could struggle to reach all properties, open spaces manager David Askin said.

Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade members responded to a roof blowing off a farm shed in wind at Rakaia about 8.30am yesterday.

The farmer had been concerned about the roof blowing onto the road, chief Tyrone Burrowes said.

Mark Ellis, of the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade, got in some last-minute training yesterday, ahead of the upcoming Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge.

The annual fundraiser for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand takes place on May 13.

Ellis said it would be the fourth year he has taken part and has, so far, secured $1800.

He is aiming to bring his total for the four years to $12,000.

“Thank you to all my sponsors,” he said.

He has also teamed up with Domino’s Pizza Ashburton, who have agreed to donate $1 from every pizza sold on May 10 to Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand, in what they call the great Dough Raiser.

Kiwi adventurer aims to transform young lives

New Zealand mountaineer and adventurer, Graeme Dingle, will be in Ashburton on Tuesday to officially launch his foundation in the district, which aims to “transform young lives forever”.

His involvement working with youth began when Dingle and his partner, Jo-anne Wilkinson, returned to New Zealand 21 years ago and were shocked to discover New Zealand had some of the worst youth statistics in the OECD. In response, they formed The Project K Trust, now known as the Graeme Dingle Foundation, with the goal of improving education, health and well-being by introducing programmes that use the great outdoors, inspirational classroom leaders and world-class mentors.

The Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains first brought the concept to Mid Canterbury, and one of the foundation’s programmes, Kiwi Can, has been introduced to Netherby and Wakanui schools.

Dingle will officially launch the foundation in Ashburton on May 2, from 4pm-5pm at the BNZ. Rotary club new generations director Allan Tait said Dingle will talk about his projects, vision and the hope to extend it further across the district.

“He’s an amazing guy,” he said.

“The programme’s been going one term and they have seen marked changes in their behaviour.

“It teaches respect in the community, honesty, ethics and integrity and we hope to roll it out across Mid Canterbury.”

Tait said Rotary club members were interested in bringing the foundation’s principles to Ashburton because its ideals “parallel what we wanted to do”.

Funeral next week Invercargill shooting victim Verity McLean will be farewelled at a private funeral service next week.

The 40-year-old was allegedly murdered by her husband Ben McLean, a local police officer.

He has also been charged with the attempted murder of Garry Duggan who his wife was believed to be in a relationship with. Police say McLean’s funeral will be a private event but her family are considering holding a public memorial service.

Crash victim named A New Zealand man killed in a car crash in France was just weeks away from his wedding, according to a social media post. Beau St George, 33, was identified as the Kiwi killed in a head-on crash on a stretch of road between Valensole and Manosque. In a social media post his mum Liz St George said: “We’re all devastated with the loss of our beautiful son Beau in a car accident in France yesterday.

Just a few short weeks before his wedding to the love of his life.

Thieves ‘despicable’ A group of “despicable” thieves who stole donations to the RSA should show some “mana” and turn themselves in. Northland Police Inspector Justin Rogers said police were closing in on four offenders who targeted the Paparoa GAS station on Wednesday morning. “I would appeal to the people involved; have some mana and come forward. “You will be caught and you have been caught on camera get yourself some form of dignity while you still can and do the decent thing and give yourself up.”

Slip buries digger A huge slip just south of Kaikoura on Thursday night nearly buried a digger, and the NZTA are still trying to figure out how to remove it. The slip happened overnight while the 20 tonne excavator was empty, and no one was working.

Steve Mutton, a programme manager for the NZTA, said the incident happened “while it was parked up there”.

Action-packed holidays with BASE Through BASE Youth Centre Ashburton, local children have had the opportunity to spend their holidays having fun.

BASE Easter holiday programme organiser Jenny Reed said that in the first week children had been taking part in outdoor activities at the Mania-o-roto Scout Park, such as bike riding, swimming, a cook off and a circus-themed day.

In the second week, the children moved their activities to the new 193 on Burnett Street to complete more activities before finishing it all off with an Amazing Race-style challenge around Ashburton yesterday.

Defendant says he Super bug a ‘serious didn’t hit man enough threat’ to Kiwis ■ NZ HOSPITALS

A man accused of beating up his stepdaughter’s rapist made a full admission to the police officer who arrested him, saying he didn’t hit the victim enough.

Constable Benjamin Reed gave evidence in the Wellington District Court yesterday morning during a trial in which the stepfather, who cannot be named, faces a charge of assaulting the victim in Paraparaumu last year.

The victim, Jason Haward, has been convicted of raping the man’s stepdaughter and was sentenced to seven years’ jail.

The stepfather has pleaded not guilty to assault with intent to injure.

Reed said he asked the man what happened on April 23, 2016, when the alleged assault happened.

“We saw him walking, I told her to pull over, I jumped out of the car and started punching him in the face, that was about it,” the man told Reed.

When asked how many times he hit Haward, the man replied “not enough”.

“I tried to kick him in the balls

once,” the man told Reed.

The man told the officer Haward had raped his daughter.

A witness to the alleged assault told the court he was driving along Kapiti Rd when he saw “a bit of a melee” on the side of the road.

He described one man trying to throw punches at another man while others tried to separate them.

He said the man throwing punches was yelling “It was you, I know it was you, you raped her, I’m gonna get you”.

The witness said the victim was denying the accusations, saying he had a family and wouldn’t do such a thing.

The struggle to keep the two apart continued until police arrived.

The stepfather also gave evidence of the moment he discovered Haward had raped his stepdaughter.

He was at home on April 21 last year when he heard a “commotion” outside.

He heard his partner screaming for him and went outside to see

his stepdaughter crouched naked beside a car with Haward “over the top of her grabbing at her”.

Haward kept saying the girl had stolen his wallet, but could not explain why she was naked, the man said.

The man “lost the plot” and began punching him and his partner then pushed Haward to the ground and kicked him in the head several times.

Haward’s partner then came running down the street screaming and said Haward had only gone out to get a bottle of wine.

When the defendant’s partner told the woman Haward had raped her daughter, the woman then turned to Haward and said “oh you’re back up to your old tricks are you c***?”, the defendant said.

Police arrived and arrested Haward, but did not charge the defendant with assault on that occasion.

“The police said that under the circumstances it was anything that any reasonable person would do,” he said.

The trial continues.

A super bug resistant to almost all treatments has been found in New Zealand hospitals and poses a “serious and urgent threat”, microbiologists say.

Known as CPE, the group of bacteria is prevalent in India and the subcontinent and is most often brought to New Zealand by travellers, the author of a study in the New Zealand Medical Journal says.

Clinical microbiologist Joshua Freeman said people with healthy immune systems were most often unaffected by CPE, but it was dangerous for those in hospital with weakened systems.

It is more resistant to treatment than other super bugs and causes infections in patients, he says.

“CPE have far fewer treatment options, and in some cases no antibiotic treatment options are available,” he says. “Moreover, it is likely in the near future that CPE will become resistant to all known antibiotics with resistance to the last-line antibiotic,

colistin, emerging in India.”

First reported in New Zealand in 2009 and 2011 respectively, there has been a sharp increase in CPE cases in the country in 2015 and 2016, Dr Freeman says.

A national biosecurity plan for managing the bug needs to be developed and greater awareness raised among healthcare workers of the threat it poses, he says.

He also recommends setting up a process in which investigators examine any extra spreading of the bug within New Zealand and a way for hospitals with CPE patients to gain rapid access to “last-line” antiobiotics required to treat it.

“Ultimately these measures may only succeed in delaying CPE from becoming endemic in New Zealand,” Dr Freeman says. “[But] every year free of CPE ensures a safer healthcare system for our patients and buys a little more time for new treatment options and prevention technologies to become available.”

It is a role which has enabled him to see first-hand the ongoing vandalism problem.

Recently an outdoor chair was

thrown into the domain pond and road cones have also ended up in there.

There has been tagging on items throughout the domain, stones were removed from the top of a stone bridge, things thrown on to the roof of the Walnut Avenue pavilion, downpipes torn off the

building and windows broken. “I have spent a fair bit of time picking up shards of glass,” he said.

And often he noticed rubbish did not always make its way into the many bins around.

Morgan frequently takes photos on his smart phone of the picturesque scenes at the domain. “To

me it’s an absolute jewel in the crown and it’s right at our backdoor step,” he said.

He said staff at the domain did an amazing job and he wanted to see as many people from Ashburton as possible visit and appreciate the domain’s beauty.

Vandalism throughout Mid Canterbury is an ongoing cost to the council and repairs cost $2200 for the months of February and March this year.

One-test All Blacks lock James Broadhurst has retired from rugby at the age of 29 because of the ongoing effects of concussion.

Hurricanes forward Broadhurst called time on his career after failing to shake off the impact of a blow to his head 18 months ago. He said it had been difficult to be advised by medical experts to walk away from the sport he loved but he accepted it was the right advice for his own wellbeing.

His lone Test came in a win over South Africa in Johannesburg soon before his injury, following some sublime domestic form which saw him named a finalist as Super Rugby player of the year.

Celtic notches first victory Celtic became the first Mid Canterbury team to score a win over their Canterbury counterparts in the Inter-Centre Premier netball competition on Thursday night, beating Kaiapoi 60-34 in Christchurch.

While they led throughout the match, it was a massive final quarter which sealed the deal for Celtic, after a strong defensive effort throughout the court.

Coach Ange Leadley said the inter-centre competition was a great way to test their ability against teams outside of Mid Canterbury and her girls rose to the occasion.

“The girls are really fit and are really committed to performing for the full 60 minutes.

“They wanted to finish strongly and that was a real focus for them heading into that last quarter.”

She said Sarah Hewson turned a lot of ball over, captain Gina Woodhouse led by example in defence and Lana Ngametua has a strong game in the shooting circle.

They will be hoping for much of the same next week, returning to play at home against the tall order of the Lincoln University team.

Back in Ashburton at the EA Networks Centre, Ashburton College pushed their opponents right to the end, producing one of the closest matches of the round.

The youngsters pushed St Nicholas every step of the way with their feisty and dedicated play before finally going down 46-39.

College got off to a quick start before St Nicholas re-grouped to take the first quarter 14-12, with a penalty shot right on the buzzer.

Southern were expecting a tough challenge from last year’s top premier netball side Kereru and got exactly that, going down 86-30.

It was a big margin for Mid Canterbury’s defending champions Methven as well, beaten by Halswell 75-31.

United and Technical ended the first quarter with only two goals in the visitors’ favour, however Technical rallied and started

to pull away in the second quarter.

They never looked back and the final score was 50-23.

It was a tough day at the office for Hampstead, the other travelling team, beaten by Saints 54-28.

In the Premier 2 grade, there were three much closer matches.

Celtic B beat Hampstead B 3632 making it two wins in a row for them, while Rakaia A also scored a second win, beating Allenton A 30-23.

Ashburton College B scored their first win over Celtic C, winning 34-23.

Warriors star re-signs The thought of NRL premiership glory for a club other than the Warriors leaves Shaun Johnson feeling hollow inside.

So the star halfback is staying put in Auckland – for now.

The 26-year-old playmaker committed to the Warriors through to 2019 yesterday, ending the speculation about his club future.

A native Aucklander and Warriors youth product, Johnson admitted there were plenty of NRL clubs across the ditch chasing his signature.

But, with just one finals series under his belt in six NRL campaigns, Johnson felt his story at the Warriors remained incomplete.

He’ll remain for the next two years as

new boss Stephen Kearney beds into the role and moulds the club in his image, before reassessing his options.

“Winning elsewhere doesn’t sit right with me at the moment,” Johnson said.

“I don’t think it ever leant the way of leaving.

“The thought of winning here, that means the world to me and that’s what I want to strive to do – I’m surrounded by people at this club who share the same passion for it.”

Bursting onto the scene in the club’s run to the 2011 grand final, Johnson has made 133 appearances for the Warriors, scoring a record 717 points.

He has also made 20 appearances for the Kiwis.

Getting over the blues

As the first player in Mid Canterbury to be given rugby’s new blue card, there is no one better to speak about its impact and process than Josh Ree. The Mt Hutt College student, who will this year play for both his school and the new-look Mid Canterbury Combined Schools 1st XV, copped a nasty knock when filling in for the Methven Under 18 side early in the season and has spent the best part of the past month away from the game after receiving the automatic three-week stand down.

“I don’t remember an awful lot about it to be fair,” Ree said.

“I can recall going in to make the tackle but that’s about it. They say I sat up but then they reckon my eyes rolled back into my head and I started shaking and that was about it.

“The next thing I knew I woke up and had people holding my neck and holding my legs down.”

After being checked by a doctor that night and cleared to go home, Ree’s long process to getting back to the rugby paddock began.

Under the new rugby protocols he was automatically stood down from any form of rugby for three weeks.

Ree said he was understanding of the process and why it had been implemented and did everything he could to follow the rules to the letter, but that it was pretty tough for an actively fit young teenager to adhere to.

“You are barely allowed to walk for the first 14 days, no light exercise or anything.

“Two days after that was up I was allowed to return to some light exercise before being able to do some ball skills a few days after that as well.

“Then after 23 days I had to get a doctor’s clearance to return to full training.”

That clearance in itself was an intense, but required, procedure which Ree described as much like getting a full physical. Although passing with flying colours, he said the activities he was asked to perform were interesting.

“There was a lot of testing of my balance, things like holding my arms out in front of me and having to touch my nose 10 times in a set amount of time.

“Then they asked a whole heap of questions and there were a few there that Mum, who was standing next to me at the time, couldn’t answer.

“But thankfully I managed to do enough to get clearance and I feel like I am ready to get back into it.

“My big thing will be not letting it knock my confidence, I can’t be going into tackles worried about it happening again because if I do that, then I will get hurt again.”

The 16-year-old Ree will take to the paddock this afternoon when he steps out for the Mid Canterbury Combined Schools First XV in their first match of the competition against Shirley Boys’ High School in Christchurch.

“The team is starting to come together really well, we’ve still got a bit to get sorted I think but we are on the Josh Ree had the unwanted ‘honour’ of being awarded the first blue card in Mid Canterbury rugby.

Barretts on the verge of All Blacks dynasty T he All Blacks selectors are no longer in the habit of throwing a roughie into the mix when they sit down to select their team, especially when the big target of the year is a major scalp like the Lions.

Gone are the days when all New Zealand hovered over the wireless to await the announcement from the depths of Athletic Park on who would be pulling on the black jersey, when the list could include a bolter from the backblocks of Taranaki, Southland or even Rakaia.

Nowadays, much like the Budget, everything is telegraphed well in advance, and if some newspaper or radio station ran a selection contest most punters would be within one or two play-

ers of the three wise men.

Take the back division; the likelihood of Ben from Accounts, with Israel Dagg as back-up, to fill the fullback position would appear to be set in stone.

Both can be shunted to the wing with very little loss of impact, Beauden Barrett can also move to the back at will – but so can little bro Jordie.

And he just might be the name Steve Hansen has pencilled in to upset the mug punters’ applecarts.

Jordie has been doing great things for the Canes this year, including taking lots of successful kicks at goal, something many see as the only achilles heel of his superstar brother.

the telly it appears that Jordie could comfortably slip into any position in the backline, and that is definitely an asset that the selectorial committee have always been keen on.

Jordie’s tackle rate doesn’t look that flash on paper at 41 per cent, but at fullback it’s always going to be worse. Often the men running at you have already made a substantial break, the defence is in tatters and you’re firmly on the back foot, so those

figures can easily be skewed.

Anyway, it’s not so far into the realms of fancy that Jordie’s name might at least appear in the squad; who was picking (or had heard of) Anton Lienert-Brown a couple of years ago? Or even Nehe Milner-Skudder, who was rated a megastar not that long after emerging from the woodwork?

Most likely, Jordie would be introduced with a super-sub role, sort of like big brother, in fact, if/ when they are considering his injection into the big-time.

And if you’re into extrapolation on a grand scale, then you’ve probably already written the name Barrett three times on the list of players getting on the All Blacks’ northern tour later in the year.

Ashcoll’s high flyers Ashburton College senior boys’ basketball team kicks off a busy season today and their coach Pip Johnston has high hopes for the side.

They are playing in Canterbury Basketball’s under 20 men’s competition in Christchurch on Saturdays and also in the secondary schools’ Thompson Trophy division one Tuesday night competition.

The squad has been training since the start of the year and is keen for real game time; they play Checkers-Burnside today.

Eight players have returned from the 2016 side and the newbies include players with age-group representative experience.

Johnston, helped this year by former Ashcoll captain Kody Stuthridge, said he wanted to be in the top four for both competitions.

“My expectations are high as I think this team is going to surprise some teams. We have a lot more players this year that can finish above the rim. We have more speed and strength as well.

“We have worked extremely hard in the off season to make sure that we are where we need to be to be competitive.

“The boys are very fit and we will be looking to use that to our advantage.”

Johnston said those who had played at this level before knew their top-four goal would not come without keeping up the hard work.

“The boys that have been with me for three seasons now know what I expect and how hard it is to get to the goals we have set.

“The new boys have done an excellent job at pushing the others to their limits.”

He has been putting extra focus on the

three-ball, previously an area of weakness.

“This year everybody from 1-12 can shoot the ball and have the confidence to do so.

“We can spread the floor very well and have better communication as a team.”

Johnston has praise for Canterbury Basketball’s Thomson Trophy secondary schools’ competition, which is in its third season.

“I think it is only going from strength to strength as more teams are interested in playing and even though you have had 6-7 teams that have always been in the top division, the other three teams that make up division 1 have changed each year.”

The strength and skills of Canterbury teams was obvious at the South Island Secondary Schools’ tournament, with five of the six teams qualifying for nationals in the past two years coming from the Thompson Trophy catchment, he said.

Some of the players in these teams were also among young Kiwis heading off to colleges in the US to further their game.

Johnston said he wanted his players to take the court with passion and pride, with the ultimate goal this season of qualifying for secondary school nationals.

“And on Saturdays, even though we are playing as a school team, we are also flying the flag for Mid Canterbury.

“I want to show them there is basketball available at a high level after they leave school if they want to keep playing.

While the under 20 competition begins today, the Thompson Trophy and girls’ Whelan Trophy begins on May 9 and home games for the latter will be at Basketball Mid Canterbury’s Oxford Street Stadium.

Jewels spot within range

Ben Waldron is going to let the Harness Jewels come to him, as opposed to going out and chasing them.

The Ashburton horseman is taking the if it’s meant to, it will happen approach with his star mare Queen Bee Bardon ahead of the Four-Year-Old Diamond in June on his home track because he knows that if you try and chase it, you’re more than likely going to come unstuck.

Queen Bee Bardon currently sits just outside the top 12 for the Four-Year-Old Diamond with just a few weeks of qualifying time remaining, but she’s within reach of making the field for the $150,000 event if she can pick up a win at some point in the coming weeks.

“At the end of the day, if it happens it will be great,” Waldron said.

“But I’ve been in this position before with horses where you have to chase a spot and it hasn’t worked out that well for us, so we are going to take the casual approach and hope for the best.

“I’ve always said though if you are good enough to make your way into the field, then you are good enough to go and compete and it’s a bonus this year because the Jewels are on the back doorstep.”

Without the pressure of chasing stake monies, Waldron would be quite happy to see his big pacer driven conservatively at today’s Ashburton Trotting Club meeting thanks to a wide barrier draw over the 2400 metres.

The daughter of Gotta Go Cullen has given her trainer and her connections, Gordon Guthrie, Michael Crequer and Renee Williams a few headaches in her short career to date, but the promise is there of exciting times ahead.

“We have had a few battles, she got a virus and it took her a long time to come back from that, but we are getting somewhere, she’s a lot better than what she was.

“The key now is getting her to relax better for us in her races, she tends to like to charge out of the gate and then gets quite keen.

“I’m not one to give instructions to drivers, but I would think Craig will be quite keen to go back early and see what happens.”

Craig is Craig Thornley, who has struck up a strong combina-

tion with the mare and will drive again today.

Drawn eight in a strong field the hope is that a good pace up front will bring Queen Bee Bardon’s speed into play late in the race and she can get home over the top of her opposition.

She will face fellow local, and Ashburton track specialist, Christopher Banner in the race.

The Laurence Hanrahantrained pacer has had five starts on his home track for three wins and two placings and will today start off the second line with Gerard O’Reilly in the sulky.

The locals are in play in almost every race on the 11 race programme today with plenty of strong chances for home town success throughout the day’s racing.

Te Rapa test for 3YO Talented three-year-old Sweet Leader faces a moment of truth at Te Rapa today. He will be coming back from surgery when he resumes against a competitive age group line-up in the Gr.3 Inglis Sales Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes.

“He’s had a wind operation since his last run,” said Lance O’Sullivan, who prepares the son of O’Reilly.

“He looks extremely well and he’s forward enough to go a big race.”

While all the outwardly signs are positive, O’Sullivan said the true test was yet to come. “The operation went well, but you never really know until they are put under the pressure of a race.”

Cruz hoping stars all align Cambridge trainer Trevor Cruz is hardly daring to think that fitness, weather and the right races could all align for his three runners today.

Cruz has been one of many trainers frustrated by a wet late summer and autumn and without trying to goad Mother Nature, he is aiming to capitalise on the current dead track conditions at Te Rapa and Hastings.

“My team has been out of sync with the weather.

“The two cyclones passing through have changed things a bit

Northern Meteor filly Elusive Meteor has yet to finish worse than fourth in four starts and lowered the colours of Andado, who has won three consecutive races since, to clinch her maiden win.

“It’s a very tough field. You’ve got Hall Of Fame and his form is great and there’s a lot of good three-year-olds coming in with good form,” Cruz said.

“My horse is well though and if she can run a placing, we’d be pleased. If the conditions stay the same, I think she can be competitive.”

Cruz said Elusive Meteor was a work in progress, but she had plenty of potential.

“She’s learnt a lot from her last two runs. Early on she would go a bit hard, but she’s now shown she can settle off the speed and run on better. There should be plenty of speed so if she can sit off them, that should be an advantage.”

TAB bookmakers have made Elusive Meteor a $28 outsider for the Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes in a market headed by Gr.1 Levin Classic winner Hall Of Fame at $2.40.

“I wasn’t even sure I could get another run out of some of my team, but I’ve kept them in work, the weather has turned and the tracks are quite good for this weekend. They are all working well enough to be competitive.”

Cruz and his brother Martin will produce Elusive Meteor in the Gr.3 Inglis Sales Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) at Te Rapa and Packing Tycoon and Heart Beat at Hastings.

Help to transform young lives Megan Gnad

W

ith the launch of the Graeme Dingle Foundation in the district, Ashburton has the opportunity to band together to transform young lives.

It has been running nationally for 21 years, with the adventurer’s life work focused on providing our young people with positive role models, mentors and programmes in nature’s classroom, the great outdoors.

Each year the charity works with 18,000 five to 18-year-olds throughout New Zealand, and with its introduction to Mid Canterbury, we have the chance to turn it into something incredible.

The Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains has brought the concept to the district, with one of the foundation’s programmes, Kiwi Can, now offered at Netherby and Wakanui schools.

It’s only been running for one term and already reports are positive with marked changes in the behaviour of those taking part.

Comments from young people across the country include how the programme taught them to have a more positive outlook on life, has built self-esteem, self-confidence, leadership skills, that it’s okay to make mistakes and the importance of goal setting.

Since the Canterbury earthquakes there’s been even more demand and need for its programmes, which has seen the Canterbury region triple in its outreach over the past three years.

As a result, they’re now delivering the transformational model across Christchurch City and Ashburton, along with assuming management of Timaru and Waimate.

The Graeme Dingle Foundation is on a mission to change lives and it’s not slowing down any time soon.

But, as it is rolled out in our neck of the woods, it needs community support to ensure the model is solid, secure and delivered to where it’s needed most.

Their next step is to officially launch the foundation to the district on Tuesday and work to secure community funding to keep the programme running.

Then, with time, they hope to extend it into schools right across Mid Canterbury.

Here is an incredible opportunity to invest in the lives of our youth.

By starting today and creating a solid foundation, we can support young people now and well into the future.

hat do you think of the state of Mid Canterbury roads?

Recent wet weather, steady rainfall and increasing heavy vehicle traffic has been blamed this week for the shoddy state of Thompsons Track.

Some motorists have raised concerns it could cause a serious accident.

Ashburton District Council says more than eight kilometres of the total 39 kilometres of the road had been rehabilitated and strengthened in the last four years. So annually the road received about two kilometres of rehabilitation, which included widening.

On top of this, the council’s contractor was working “very hard” to repair roads, including Thompsons Track, affected by recent wet weather.

Jo-Ann Beach Road just before Church Street has a big hump of seal pushed up again probably from big trucks, it gets fixed but just keeps coming back, I worry that with the speed cars go down that road if a car tyre hits it it could cause carnage

Liam Grahams Road got resealed in the week leading up to Easter and then all the rain came and the water was pooling up. Within a week of the resealing, maybe its not just the weather we have to blame.

W

ho am I, when leaving home to gain a new future also means losing your past?

Last week, I was invited to make a presention to the members of the Rotary Club of Ashburton.

Chatting with the people present, I was surprised by how many familiar faces I recognised.

I had seen these faces at the supermarket, at the accountant’s office, at my own workplace, at local eateries and at other events.

It struck me that after only two years’ living in Ashburton, I had already developed a sense of familiarity with people, creating landmarks through this community and a timeline where my, albeit very short, past informed this present moment.

Creating a timeline is something that all of us do as we move through life. This timeline becomes the foundation that grounds our lives on a daily basis and the people within it. It is the framework through which we understand who we are in the grand scheme of our existence. It is the fabric that holds together our sense of identity. As migrants, we negotiate more than one timeline and, more often than not,

we negotiate two or more pasts, presents and futures which are grounded in two or more places and lives.

We have two or more sets of families and friends and we have more than one “home”.

We have one foot here and the other somewhere else. Parts of our heart are here and others in other places.

During my talk, someone stood up and offered to share their own insight as a migrant to Ashburton with us.

They said that one of the most difficult aspects of leaving their country and their home and emigrating here is that they lost their past.

This is something that many of us who identify as migrants can relate to. When we move, we lose who we are because we lose the

people who know us intricately.

We leave behind everything that has come together to make us who we are and when we arrive in our new home, no-one knows us and we are no-one.

As I write this column on Anzac Day, a day of remembrance of the past, I wonder if as migrants we can ever be whole in our new lives in our adopted communities.

During my time here, like many other newcomers, I have worked hard to build a life and some credibility in my community. I have succeeded in a few things.

People know me and recognise me just like I recognised familiar faces among my hosts.

But, as a newcomer, who am I to others, really?

For us, the people we meet in our receiving communities only know a version of us where very

little of our timeline and all the building blocks that make us who we are, have relevance.

Some of us were doctors back home, here we are meatworkers.

Some of us were well-known back home for being the life of the party, here we are shy and reserved because of the language barrier.

Back home we had a family, here we live alone because our children and partner couldn’t come.

Many parts of our stories are left out … It doesn’t make sense to talk about a lot of things to new connections, because you really would have had to have been there to understand.

I believe in the free movement of people. But that’s not to say it doesn’t have a price. Migrants by definition, move with the fu-

ture in mind; but their journeys inevitably involve excising part of their past. It’s not workers who emigrate, but people. And whenever they move they leave part of themselves behind. And the losses keep coming.

Funerals, christenings, graduations and weddings are missed – milestones you couldn’t make because the timeline that you are currently building for yourself requires you to be away. You may have to leave behind your partner, your kids and your home. In time, in order to survive, you may have to let go of your language, your religion and your sense of self.

This is not a sob story. It is an inescapable truth of the human experience in the age of globalisation, where barriers have come down and people move around the world in unprecedented ways.

Migration to anywhere marks the beginning of a new life, but inevitably involves loss.

Even when you’re privileged, as I and many other newcomers to Ashburton are. Even when you move of your own free will, as I and many others did, you feel this loss of parts of who you are in your bones and while you are happy in your new home, that nostalgia of the past never truly goes away.

o PM Bill English has pounced.

As Murray and Hekia fade into the pantheon of ministers past, Farmer Bill has appointed another male-female combination to replace them – Gerry Brownlee and Nikki Kaye.

Other shuffling has also occurred, the promotion of Mark Mitchell to defence being the most noteworthy and the gentle demotion of Nick Smith the least surprising.

Mr Brownlee’s diplomatic skills have been questioned by some, but I remain confident that Gerry will find the mots juste in the United Nations, or elsewhere in the chancelleries of the world, as and when, required.

He may, occasionally, stamp his foot to emphasise a particularly important point, but, otherwise, will show discretion

and understanding of a high calibre. After all, “Cometh the hour, cometh the Man”, and Gerry will be no exception.

Thus has our “didn’t see it coming” Prime Minister gathered round him those he will rely on if National is to be returned to power in September yet again, when Mr English hopes to become PM in his own right rather than being, merely, an accidental left-over from John Key’s reign.

The changes can hardly be said to be flamboyant, but they are much in keeping with Mr

English’s cautious nature, which sees him rarely losing his temper but often smiling. Life for Bill seems far less of a struggle than we may find it and he also seems to have raised the phlegmatic to an art form. So much so, in fact, that some of the media’s best questions, designed to trip even The Trump himself or, at the very least, seriously impede his stately progress across the country, are never noticed as such by Prime Minister Bill, and are thus “wasted”.

Patrick Gower himself, the master interviewer, with the mildly scorn-curling lower lip, finds getting through Mr English’s guard “an awesome” challenge as the PM seems not to have such a guard, but simply takes the questions as they come without appearing to appreciate that they are ever-so-subtly “loaded”. man with such fresh-faced innocence is hard to discombobulate and, thus, deeply feared by the media.

Then, there is, too, the increasingly formidable Amy Adams.

Amy has now become the female equivalent of the erstwhile Mr Fix-It himself, Steven Joyce, who has recently had to settle for being just Minister of Finance rather than Minister of Everything, as he had been up to that point.

Ms Adams is now collecting portfolios with similarly impressive speed and panache, social housing and justice being but two of them.

Her future, both long and short-term, seems rosy and she has about her that aura that says “future prime minister”.

Indeed, it may not be beyond the bounds of possibility that in

the foreseeable future, we may witness the clash of the two, graceful gladiators – Amy and Labour’s new deputy Jacinda Ardern – leading their parties in mortal combat for the right to occupy the treasury benches.

I hope I live long enough to be in the crowd looking on.

So, the battle lines for September are better drawn each day, with immigration (too much) and housing (lack of) being the issues over which serious quantities of political blood look like being spilt.

Terrorist threat foiled Armed police carrying out a counter-terrorism operation yesterday swooped in on a man they said was carrying knives in a bag near Britain’s Parliament and arrested him on suspicion of planning terrorist acts.

A European security official familiar with the individual said the suspect was known to British security agencies and was thought to have been inspired by the Islamic State group.

The official said the discovery of knives suggested an attack might have been close to fruition. Authorities haven’t released the man’s name.

London’s Metropolitan Police said the 27-year-old suspect was stopped and detained “as part of an ongoing operation” by the force’s counter-terrorism unit.

No one was injured in the incident, which unfolded just metres from where an attacker killed five people with a vehicle and a knife last month.

It sent a jittery jolt through an area that has been on edge since the March 22 attack.

Police said knives were recovered during the operation and that there was “no immediate known threat” to the public.

Police said the man was being held at a London police station on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and on suspicion of the commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism. As armed police

Armed police talk to a man at the scene after a person was arrested following an incident in Whitehall in London, yesterday.

Ian Moss, who was travelling on a bus on Whitehall, said the man didn’t appear to be struggling.

“He had police pointing arms at him though,” Moss said. A bearded, black-clad

man could later be seen standing on the sidewalk, surrounded by police, before being put into a police vehicle.

“He was standing with his back toward the public and his face against the wall,” said witness Chris Kacyk, who arrived in the area just as the suspect was taken into custody.

“The guys made sure he could not move. He was

tightly cornered by three heavily armed police officers with machine guns and two undercover detectives.”

Kacyk said he saw several knives – including one very large one – on the ground next to the suspect’s knapsack.

After the arrest, forensic officers pored over the scene. A black bag and at least three knives could be seen on the ground.

Trump scores 1/10 on his own 100-day pledge US presidents must really curse their predecessor Franklin Roosevelt.

The Depression-era leader passed 15 major pieces of legislation within 100 days and established a high watermark of action against which every president since has been judged.

Donald Trump reaches his 100th day in office today, which gives Washington watchers a chance to stop and assess how successful a president he has been and what sort of leader he’s shaping up as.

Trump’s been dancing an intriguing two-step in the weeks leading up to the milestone.

On one foot, he has dismissed the marker as “ridiculous”, and said that regardless of his successes, the media will “kill” him.

On the other foot, Trump has been rushing to score wins – most notably on healthcare and tax cuts – ahead of his 100th day. He’s backed that up with a new 100-day website

“No administration has accomplished more in the first 90 days,” Donald Trump said in Wisconsin last week.

spruiking his achievements, along with White House receptions and a huge rally in Pennsylvania to mark the milestone.

Trump is likely to cop some harsh appraisals this weekend, especially considering that he explicitly promised to achieve a great deal within his

first 100 days in office.

The most public way he did this was via his Contract with the American Voter, a two-page document released in October bearing Trump’s signature, described as his “100-day action plan to Make America Great Again”.

The document is hugely am-

bitious and, if you look at the contract in isolation, Trump has summarily failed to meet his promises to the American people.

He has taken some action on the executive orders he proposed, but even a favourable reading of the document would, at best, give him a mark of one out of 10.

On the second page of the contract, Trump outlines 10 legislative goals he promises to introduce and pass through the Congress with the first 100 days. To date, he has barely followed through on one of them – to repeal and replace Obamacare.

Airline pays out over ejection United Airlines moved to staunch criticism – and any customer defections – by reaching a settlement yesterday with a passenger dragged off one of its planes two weeks ago and issuing new policies designed to prevent similar customer-service failures.

On April 9, Kentucky physician David Dao was forcibly removed from a flight after refusing to give up his seat to a crew member.

The incident ignited a debate about poor service and a lack of customer-friendly policies on US airlines.

United and lawyers for Dao declined to disclose financial terms of the settlement. Earlier, United announced steps it would take to reduce overbooking of flights. Among other things, the airline said it will raise the limit on payments to customers who give up seats on oversold flights to $10,000, and it will improve training of employees.

Dao never filed a lawsuit against United, but Demetrio had said legal action was likely.

Dao was waiting to fly to Louisville, Kentucky, an April 9 when

the airline decided it needed four seats for Republic Airline crew members who needed to travel to work another United Express flight in Louisville the next morning. When Dao and his wife were selected for bumping, he refused to leave.

Video of the incident has sparked more than two weeks of withering criticism and mock-

ery of United. Munoz initially blamed Dao, but later said he was horrified by the event and called it a failure on United’s part.

Yesterday, United released a report on the incident that outlined new policies to prevent a repeat.

The airline vowed to reduce, but not eliminate, overbooking – the selling of more tickets than there are seats on the plane.

United won’t say whether ticket sales have dropped, but the airline’s CEO acknowledged the Dao incident could be damaging.

“I breached public trust with this event and how we responded,” Oscar Munoz. “People are upset, and I suspect that there are a lot of people potentially thinking of not flying us.”

To head off customer defections, United had already announced that it will no longer call police to remove passengers from overbooked flights, and will require airline crews travelling for work to check in sooner. - AP

Taliban announce fresh offensive Teen accused of beating grandad to death A teenager allegedly bashed her grandfather to death with a frying pan after he criticised her mother’s parenting skills on Anzac Day. Tayla Perkin, 18, is accused of bludgeoned her war veteran grandfather Lyall Ellis, 89, after a verbal argument turned physical in his Esperance home in Western Australia.

Footage shows the teen boarding a plane under police guard as she is flown to Kalgoorlie prison before her next court appearance, reports The West.

Perkin, who was living with her grandfather at the time of the alleged attack, reportedly flew into a rage during the row.

Ellis was rushed to Esperance Hospital – only a one minute drive away – but died on Tuesday night, the Daily Mail reports.

Major Crime Squad officers from Perth established a crime scene outside the home.

It is understood Perkin’s younger brother, a toddler, was also home during the incident.

Perkin was initially charged with grievous bodily harm on Wednesday, but the charges were upgraded to murder on Thursday.

The 18-year-old wept in court, where she was supported by her mother and a friend.

Afghanistan’s Taliban announced the start of their spring offensive yesterday, promising to build their political base in the country while focusing military assaults on coalition and Afghan security forces.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid announced the launch of the offensive in an email statement that boasted Taliban control over more than half of the country, referencing a February report issued by Washington’s special inspector general for Afghan reconstruction.

That report said that the Afghan government had control or influence over only 52 per cent of Afghanistan’s 407 districts last year, down from 63.4 per cent previously.

China asked North Korea to stop tests US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said yesterday that China has threatened to impose sanctions on North Korea if it conducts further nuclear tests.

“We know that China is in communications with the regime in Pyongyang,” Tillerson said. “They confirmed to us that they had requested the regime conduct no further nuclear test.”

Tillerson said China also told the US that it had informed North Korea “that if they did conduct further nuclear tests, China would be taking sanctions actions on their own”.

Earlier yesterday, the senior US Navy officer overseeing military operations in the Pacific said the crisis with North Korea is at the worst point he’s ever seen, but he declined to compare the situation to the Cuban missile crisis decades ago.

“It’s real,” Adm. Harry Harris Jr., commander of US Pacific Command, said during testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Harris said he has no doubt that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un intends to fulfill his pursuit of a nuclear-tipped missile

capable of striking the United States. The admiral acknowledged there’s uncertainty within US intelligence agencies over how far along North Korea’s nuclear and missile programmes are. But Harris said it’s not a matter of if but when.

“There is no doubt in my mind,” Harris said.

The Trump administration has declared that all options, including a targeted military strike, are on the table to block North Korea from carrying out threats against the United States and its allies in the region.

Citibanamex blamed a glitch in the system for the decision, which left María Félix Nava unable to collect her welfare payments. After the story was picked up by local media in Guadalajara, an official stepped in to deliver a cheque by hand. New transparency laws require benefits to be paid into individual accounts.

Mrs Félix said she went for three months without the state payments after she was turned away from her local bank branch.

Mouse in Coke can A South Dakota man who claims to have found a dead mouse in a can of soda is suing Coca-Cola.

Duane Putzier is saying that he missed 60 hours of work and accumulated $US1000 in medical bills after becoming ill from the allegedly mouse-infested 16-ounce can of Coke he consumed on June 7, 2016. He claims he felt an object “shift toward the opening” of the can as he was finishing the drink.

In court documents, attorneys for Coca-Cola disputed that there was proof that the mouse ended up in the can during bottling.

Wildfires in Arizona An off-duty Border Patrol agent is being investigated for possibly starting a large wildfire in southern Arizona while target shooting last weekend, authorities said yesterday. Border Patrol officials said they were aware the investigation about how the fire began “involves an off-duty Tucson Sector Border Patrol agent” that they did not identify. “The agent was involved in recreational shooting and immediately reported the fire after it begun,” officials added.

Murray Goulburn in court The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has filed Federal Court proceedings against Australia’s largest milk processor, Murray Goulburn Cooperative, but decided not to take any further action against Fonterra Australia.

An investigation was launched when Murray Goulburn abruptly slashed its forecast payout for its farmer shareholders in April last year, a move that was followed by Fonterra’s Australian unit in early May. One of the reasons it had opted not to take any action against Fonterra was that it was “more transparent about the risks and potential for a reduction in the farmgate milk price from quite early in the season,”

said ACCC chairman Rod Sims.

Fonterra said the last 12 months had been “incredibly challenging” for Australian dairy farmers, their families, our communities and our industry.

“We understand it will take time to rebuild confidence in the dairy industry,” it said.

“We are currently working on a range of initiatives, including a more transparent milk price, and industry measures to help get our industry back on track,” Fonterra said.

According to the ACCC, from June 2015 to February 2016 Murray Goulburn misled farmers when it set an opening farmgate milk price of A$5.60 per kilogram

of milksolids and forecast a final farmgate milk price of A$6.05/ kgMS “when that was not in fact the case”.

It also alleges that from February 2016 until April 2016, Murray Goulburn misled Australian farmers by representing it had a reasonable basis for expecting to be able to maintain its opening FMP of $5.60/kgMS for the remainder of the season, and that it considered a final FMP of $5.60/kgMS was the most likely outcome for FY16, something that was also simply not the case.

In April, Murray Goulburn cut the milk price down to $4.75-to$5.00/kgMS and said the prior forecast was no longer achievable.

The 7.8 magnitude earthquake near Kaikoura last November will trim economic growth by about 0.1 of a percentage point over two years due to increases in the cost of transport to and from Canterbury and disrupted business operations, Governmentcommissioned research shows.

A Market Economics report prepared for the Ministry of Transport estimates the quake will hit gross domestic product by $465 million over two years, rising to $513m if the reconstruction takes longer than expected.

The biggest losses to the economy are in manufacturing, which relies on transport links to ship their products to customers.

The biggest economic impact was probably in the first six months after the quake, including the disruption of services in nearby Wellington and nets out over the two years as the response by the transport sector offsets losses in other sectors.

“With higher transportation costs, NZ consumers can afford to spend less on other goods, and goods produced in NZ become less competitive with overseas goods,” dragging on overall GDP, the report said.

The report comes a day after Finance Minister Steven Joyce said the forecast cost of rebuilding the road and rail corridors in and around Kaikoura was reduced to between $1.1 billion and $1.3b from a previous estimate of between $1.4b and $2b.

Joyce yesterday earmarked $812m of new capital spending to rebuild State Highway 1 and said KiwRail faced a bill of up to $400m to replace railway lines, much of which would be covered by insurance.

Losses reduced LanzaTech New Zealand, the New Zealand-founded carbon recycling company, reported a slightly narrower annual loss and while the directors signalled a number of risks they concluded it has sufficient funds to continue operating for the foreseeable future. The US-based company reported a net loss of $US37.4 million in calendar 2016 versus a loss of $38.3m in the prior year, according to its annual report.

Revenues were $4.1m versus $3.95m in the prior year and were generated by $2.4m in government grants and $1.7m from commercial contracts. Its accumulated losses now stand at $204.2m.

Zeffer Cider Co’s “Cidre Demi-Sec” was the only cider to take out one of 10 trophy titles at the 2017 International Brewing & Cider Awards held in London this week. The traditional French-style cider was judged by a tasting panel of 45, who sampled more than 1100 beers and ciders from 21 countries. New Ramada hotel Wyndham Hotel Group will introduce a new brand – Ramada Encore – to New Zealand in its new hotel in Christchurch. The hotel company says it wants to broaden its portfolio in the country. The 88room Ramada Encore Christchurch Colombo Street is being developed under a franchise agreement with Lepdon Holdings and is due to be finished late this year. Once finished, it will bring Wyndham’s portfolio in New Zealand to nine hotels and resorts spanning 446 rooms.

Quake damaged SH1. for heavy and civil engineering work in Canterbury to be between $1.96b and $2.93b, with residential work estimated to be between $66m and $331m and non-residential work to be between $58m and $290m.

For Wellington, the report estimated non-residential building construction work would cost between $712m and $3.56b, whereas residential buildings would cost between $37m and $183m and heavy and civil engineering between $16m and $23m.

Economic Development and Transport Minister Simon Bridges said the Government has committed “significant resources” to getting the affected communities back up and running, including starting construction work on the roads and providing business and staff support packages.
