Ashburton’s mayoral campaign could be shaping up to be one of the dirtiest in the Ashburton District’s history. Traditionally challenges for the mayoralty have seen public debates and a degree of touting for votes, but campaigns have been conducted in an open, transparent and mud-slinging free manner. This year’s mayoralty race could be won or lost on whether or not more voters support the sale of a block of council-owned land to a company that plans to bottle water, or whether they oppose this.

Bung the Bore Ashburton is the front of the opposition; mayor Angus McKay is in the other corner and in between is a battlefield of words that currently are being flung from the Bung the Bore corner via social media. This organisation is also pushing for its own mayoral candidate and is tipping councillor Donna Favel to be that person. Some of the accusations being levelled against Mr McKay are personal but he is remaining stoic under attack. It was part of a democratic society that people could have their say through the media, he said.

“They are free to express their opinions, that’s their democratic right.” While he is not actively following the Facebook debate, Mr McKay said he was aware of the comments that were being made. “I just hope people have a good discussion based on the scientific facts of the matter.” He did not want to venture an opinion on whether or not he believed some of the comments being made could be considered defamatory.
