The rural scenery of Methven and the Rakaia Gorge played the perfect backdrop to allow members of the Christchurch Muslim community to get away from the stress and emotion following the recent Christchurch terror attacks. A group of about 30 members of the Muslim community that attend Christchurch’s Linwood Mosque enjoyed a day out on Saturday thanks to the Methven Lions. Mac McElwain from the Meth-
ven Lions said they first thought to help out those affected by the Christchurch terror attacks at a meeting nearly a month ago. “At a meeting the Lions decided to make a contribution to help the victims of the shooting,” he said. The Lions chose to contribute to the NZ Gifts of Love and Strength. “Unlike some of those big funds they seemed to be really working face-to-face so we elected to pay the money to them,” McElwain said.
A couple of weeks later, one of the leaders of the organisation reached out to the Lions to ask if they would be interested in helping to arrange a day away for the families to allow them to get out of Christchurch. “She said they were really up against it and asked if we would be able to get them out of Christchurch and if we could give them a day out on the farm,” he said. So from that point plans were made, and on Saturday a bus from Methven Travel collected
a group of about 30 people and took them up the Rakaia Gorge for a jetboat ride. After that it was onwards to Methven where the group were shown the process of shearing a sheep, and the sheep dogs were put through their paces. The group also got the chance to view a milking shed in operation, before heading to the Dubliner for lunch, including a pikelet cooking lesson. “It was a wildly successful day and it was a very emotional and moving day,” McElwain said.

“We asked them afterwards what they enjoyed most about the day and most of them said the jetboating, but there was one young one boy who was fascinated about how to make pikelets,” he said. “It was one of the Lions guys showing him and it was different for them that a bloke was cooking.” McElwain said it was great to the see the community get in behind the day with no hesitation, and said the day was really enjoyed by all.
