Our district may be the safest it’s been for years.

Police have recorded an 11 per cent decline in crime in Ashburton over the past 12 months, while the Ministry of Justice have just recorded a 26-year-low in the number of charges prosecuted against Ashburton’s adults.

According to the Ministry of Justice data published by Statistics New Zealand earlier this week, 794 charges were prosecuted over the past financial year.

This marks a 27 per cent drop on five years ago, a 60 per cent drop from 40 years ago, and the lowest recorded rate

since 1991. Ashburton police senior sergeant Scott Banfield said the overall decreases can be attributed to two main factors.

“The court and police are doing things smarter and they’re also using alternative resolutions where possible.”

He said Ashburton police had seen an 11 per cent drop in the crime rate in Ashburton, 24 per cent in Methven and a 4 per cent drop in Rakaia between September 2016 and September 2017.

Banfield said what was working was a focus on reducing the number of first and second-time offenders, while giving people a “shot at a second chance” and looking at the bigger picture be-

hind individual crimes. “And I think that makes us a lot safer than we were in the 80s for example, where it was all about catching the offender and simply putting them in jail.”

Public place disorder had also reduced by 23 per cent, which Banfield said was the effort of groups including Ashburton District Council, Safer Ashburton, Maori Wardens, TSG Security and Town Watch, along with strategic police tasking.

Free-range poultry farm on horizon

Environment Canterbury is processing consents for a large poultry farm at Dromore.

Kiwi Free Range Limited wants to develop a broiler farm growing chickens for meat on a 95ha block with road frontages on State Highway 1 and Dromore Hatfield Road. The development would include a cluster of eight sheds, each about 138m long and 20m wide, and ancillary buildings.

The farm would be stocked with about 441,000 chickens, grown over an eight-week cycle before being transported to a processing facility in Christchurch.

The chicken would be sold under the Tegel brand.

The company has applied for consents to develop the property, as well as operating consents including discharges to air and discharges of wash-water to land.

Worker accommodation would also be built onsite.

Each shed has climate control and odour would be dispersed by a chimney.

At the start of each growing cycle, the sheds would be lined with wood shavings and once the chickens are removed, the litter is removed and the sheds sanitised.

Kiwi Free Range operates a similar farm near Auckland and spokesman Blair Robinson said a decision on consents for the Dromore farm was expected early next month. Work would start immediately if it got the green light.

Robinson said the free-range broiler farm would fit well into Mid Canterbury’s diversified farming landscape. The demand for feed would support cropping farmers and litter from the barns

could be used as an alternative fertiliser.

“The litter contains high levels of organic matter which improves the soil physically, chemically and biologically. It is a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional fertilisers.”

He said there would be fewer dairy animals grazing on the property when the sheds were built and therefore less nitrogen leaching. Nitrogen in the washwater that would be sprayed on to surrounding pasture was minimal.

The property has a consented groundwater take using water from the Barrhill Chertsey Irrigation Scheme.

Consultants Tonkin & Taylor said written approvals had been provided by a number of adjacent landowners and the proposed poultry farm would inject several million dollars into the local construction and contracting industry. Once operational, it would provide work for four fulltime staff, plus casuals, and generate new jobs along the supply chain, including breeder farm staff and process workers.

While the farm had potential to generate odour, technology in the sheds would mitigate smell to the point it would be unlikely to cause offence.

The extra traffic caused by trucks was also unlikely to cause problems. The land is situated to the west of passing lanes, so access is left in and left out. More trees would be planted along the highway frontage and the sheds would barely be visible.

Overall, potential adverse effects were less than minor, the consultants said.

Kiwbank, NZ Post centres to split

Ashburton people wanting to post a letter or send a parcel will shortly have to change their habits when NZ Post moves out of its long-time home on the corner of East and Cameron streets.

As part of a move to create more standalone branches for its banking partner Kiwibank, Ashburton will shortly follow the model that’s been a proven success in Hamilton and Auckland CBD where postal and banking services work from separate locations.

The change has been dis-

cussed with staff in the Ashburton Post Shop and work is now under way to determine where postal services will be located.

Until then customers will be able to continue using the postal services as they do today, Holly Thompson, senior communications specialist for Kiwibank and NZ Post said.

The split is being made in response to changing customer needs to ensure the environment was right for both businesses, she said.

NZ Post customers were typically seeking quick and easy transactions, whereas Kiwibank

customers were seeking detailed conversations and banking support more and more, so the needs for each were quite different. In the areas where Kiwibank had become a standalone entity, there were excellent results, Thompson said.

“We’re excited to be bringing this model to Ashburton. Using NZ Post’s successful model of partnering with local businesses to provide postal services, it will mean we can better look after each of our business customers in Ashburton.”

No time frame has yet been released for the change.

A&P show entries due to close soon

Entries to next month’s Ashburton A&P Show are flowing in but show secretary Lucille Brown has a bit of advice for those people who still have not got theirs in – don’t delay, the cut-off date for most categories is tomorrow.

Brown said she will be taking entries today from 1pm to 4pm, and then tomorrow from 9am to 4pm, underneath the grandstand at the showgrounds.

It’s also possible to enter at http://showday.online/.

Brown said preparations for the show are progressing smoothly, with 100 large trade

sites confirmed and interest also strong in market sites and indoor market sites, along with tenders for food stalls.

This weekend she will put together the gate booklet, which will be given away to everyone who attends the annual show, which this year is on October 27 and 28. Brown said the booklet will contain a wealth of information about the show, along with the entertainment on offer and trade displays.

The colouring in competition is also running again, and entry forms are available from schools in the district.

Schools are also getting into the swing of things by holding pet days in the next few weeks.

Businesses make plea for i-Site

Bus companies and retailers say they will count the cost of the closure of Ashburton’s i-Site in lost business.

For café owner Belinda Fine, when the centre closed last month, there was an immediate drop off in the number of out of town customers coming through her door.

“They definitely generated business for us. Staff would send people down when they called in so it’s definitely affecting us,” she said.

Experience Mid Canterbury (EMC) confirmed the closure of the Ashburton site on Monday, after announcing in August that a closure was likely. The centre closed its doors that day but the official closing date has been set

for four weeks from now.

Retailer Christine Todd is furious the i-Site is closing. While it was difficult to measure the amount of business the site generated for town centre businesses, the service it provided was one no town should be without, she said.

“In every town you visit the first place you’ll go to is the i-Site. Closing ours is ridiculous. They never make a profit. They’re a service for the community and for people coming into town. It’s a service the council should be providing, it’s a non-negotiable. It’s like saying the domain has to make a profit,” she said.

Ashburton should be building itself up rather than taking things away, Todd said.

“We have to do as much as we can to encourage people to stop.

or five hours, the important thing is they stop because we have so much to offer.”

While businesses will feel the i-Site closure in the loss of casual customers, the greatest impact would be on bus and shuttle users, Budget Shuttles Mike O’Brien said.

He plies the route from Timaru to Christchurch and said the Ashburton stop had always been a busy one.

Many of his customers bought tickets from the i-Site and that meant he knew ahead what his pick-up numbers were likely to be.

O’Brien knows first-hand the impact closing an i-Site can have on a business. When the Timaru site closed he said the loss to his business was about $7000 a month.

Knowing how many people he dropped off in Ashburton, particularly over the summer holiday period, O’Brien said there could be a problem looming with people now having no source of information on accommodation, travel options or activities around the district.

“They’ll just be left on the main street and they won’t know where to stay. It’ll end up being up to the bus driver to give advice but a lot of bus drivers don’t know Ashburton or what’s available. These people will be stuck.”

Mayor Donna Favel has supported EMC’s decision to close Ashburton’s i-Site saying the organisation is where its council grant was best spent.

Favel is confident a model used elsewhere of the TimeBank organisation manning an information centre, would work in Ashburton.

TimeBank members are volunteers who exchange work credits.

“I understand the decision to keep Methven open because Methven has more tourists. And in Ashburton, you were only able to get information Monday to Friday, nine to five and on Saturday before lunch.”

A council commissioned review by consultant Peter Winder, recommended that both i-Sites close.

Winder suggested the organisation could get better value for its council grant in other areas of tourism promotion.

Favel said her main concern had been finding an alternative bus booking option. This will be House of Travel.

Information about the district and activities was already available from a number of places in town and onine, she said.

Survival chances boosted for endangered bird species

Two species of endangered birds that breed in the upper Rakaia and Rangitata Rivers have been given a survival boost by the Ashburton Water Zone Committee.

The committee decided on Tuesday to put aside $26,666 to fund large-scale predator control in separate projects on the two braided rivers to boost numbers of the endangered black-fronted tern and the vulnerable wrybill.

Some $40,000 was tagged for the Rangitata for another three years, and another $66,665 for the Rakaia for another five years.

The money will be used to fund staff who will monitor traps set to catch predators along the river banks.

The Department of Conservation and other water zone committees are also contributing.

Biodiversity officer Sarah Heddell said predator control in both areas was already paying dividends.

Wrybill survival, from fledgling to flight, had gone from 46 per cent to between 60 to 80 per cent.

Of 71 black-fronted tern nests monitored, 36 yielded hatchings;

The committee has $100,000 a year to spend on biodiversity projects and zone staff said there was still money for other work.

on a project assessment tick-list and allows the birds to breed in a habitat with fewer stoats, rats, hedgehogs, feral cats and ferrets.

Zone committee member John Waugh said trapping and killing the predators was no easy job.

“Doing a big area in the riverbed is really worthwhile as it is ideal habitat for both the blackfronted tern and wrybill, and other birds like the banded dotterel.”

He said black-backed gulls

which congregated in large numbers in the riverbed were also a problem.

A recent cull in the Rangitata River from Mt Sunday to White Rock Station had eliminated 80 per cent of the population.

Council looking at $10 million surplus

Intense competition for skilled staff is forcing local authorities around New Zealand to fill key roles with contract rather than permanent staff.

But while some councils are blowing their budgets on high cost contractors, the Ashburton District Council has managed to end its financial year well in the black. Both revenue ($67 million) and expenditure ($57 million) were up but so too was the end of year surplus, $10 million, chief executive Andrew Dalziel said.

Finding the right staff for top level vacancies was tough and on occasion the only option the

council had was to employ a short term contractor, he said.

Christchurch City Council is looking at a $29.2 million blowout on its budget this year with $3.4 million of that incurred through paying consultants a premium to fill some vacancies.

“And basically, I too have to fill some roles with contractors. One of those areas is senior accountants. We’ve had to employ a contractor to ensure we get our annual reports done on time.”

The council did appoint a senior accountant, but competition in that sector meant the employee left after a short time for a higher salaried, private sector job, Dalziel said.

“We’ve gone through another advertising round and this time I’ve said, employ two people. It’s tough when you lose accountants who take a while to come up to speed with our accounting systems.”

The council’s staff turnover was similar to other local authorities, 16 per cent, and that took into account the many part-time positions at facilities such as the EA Networks Centre, where short tenure jobs were quite normal.

Among its 245 full and parttime staff, 64 per cent have four or fewer years’ service.

The council chooses to use contractors in some areas, such as its environmental health de-

partment, but by using the same contractor as Selwyn and Timaru councils, the rates were generally pretty sharp, he said.

In some areas such as communications, a contractor was used during a work peak such as long term plan consultation.

“With building inspectors, last year we were very busy so we used a couple of contractors; at the moment we’re not. And we’ve really struggled in the commercial property area. We put an extra $100,000 in this year’s budget for a senior property person. We went to the market and we got no-one.”

Contract rates were always much higher than permanent employee rates, but when coun-

cils were competing against the private sector for staff, sometimes they ran out of options, Dalziel said.

The council has 21 staff earning more than $100,000 a year, the same number as in the previous year. Waimakariri District Council has 50 earning over that figure.

Ashburton would continue to use consultants or contractors for one-off work such as reviews of its economic and tourism functions and for training, he said.

“And we’ll always have unique positions where we’ll go through pinch-points and have to cover key staff, but we are keeping within our $13.3 million personnel budget.”

Newcomers looking for co-ordinator

They’ve come from the Philippines, Russia, Ireland and Mauritius – will Mid Canterbury’s next Newcomers Network co-ordinator be a Kiwi?

The rapidly growing organisation that works with newcomers and migrants, is looking for a new person to take over the co-ordinator’s role with incumbent SophieClaire Violette planning to move to Christchurch.

The organisation runs under the umbrella of Safer Ashburton.

Safer Ashburton manager Kevin Clifford said the role is an important one in helping the increasing number of newcomers to the district settle in and feel at home.

And while past co-ordinators have come from overseas, there is no reason why a New Zealander who had had the experience of being a newcomer in another part of the country, could not do the job.

Community planting A community planting session on the banks of the Ashburton River next month will encourage more people to think about the water amenities they value most in the district – at least that is the hope of the Ashburton Water Zone Committee, which is organising it. The committee has earmarked the afternoon of October 14 to plant several hundred native plants near a bike track that runs along the riverbank. There will be a sausage sizzle and free food for those helping and in exchange the committee wants feedback on valued community and recreation spots in its patch.

The co-ordinator’s role is a multifaceted one, Clifford said and included helping newcomers feel part of their new community, helping them make contact with community groups and services, and supporting any newcomers who were struggling with social issues as they adapted to life in a new country or new town.

“It’s really about helping them get to know their new community and to feel at home there,” he said.

“We were a couple of hundred short after transporting it and installing it, but now we can paint it school colours and add some trapeze bars,” Board of Trustees chairperson Diedra O’Shea said.

She said the fundraising and installation of the playground brought the community together and they were grateful for the support of the Fonterra Grassroots Fund.

Alabama ousts Trump ally Firebrand jurist Roy Moore won the Alabama Republican primary run-off for US Senate, defeating an appointed incumbent backed by President Donald Trump.

In an upset certain to rock the GOP establishment, Moore clinched a nearly 10-point victory over Senator Luther Strange to take the GOP nomination for the seat previously held by Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Moore, 70, is the state’s former chief justice who was twice removed from those duties after taking stands for public display of the Ten Commandments and against gay marriage.

Moore told The Associated Press that the victory tells the establishment in “Washington, DC, that their wall has been cracked and will now fall”.

The race has pitted Trump against his former strategist Steve Bannon who had ar-

Bannon declared Moore’s win a victory for Trump, despite the president’s support for Strange. Moore said he supports the president and his agenda.

Tim Allen unhappy Tim Allen is still baffled by the cancellation of his hit show, Last Man Standing. The actor and standup comic vented his frustrations while he was a guest on Norm Macdonald Live. ABC cancelled the series in early May after six seasons. ABC network president Channing Dungey said in May that the “ownership structure” of the series played a factor in the network pulling the plug and that Allen’s conservative views had nothing to do with it. Saudi Arabia to allow women to drive Saudi Arabia announced that women will be allowed to drive for the first time in the ultra-conservative kingdom next summer, fulfilling a key demand of women’s rights activists who faced detention for defying the ban.

The kingdom was the only country in the world to bar women from driving and for years had garnered negative publicity internationally for detaining women who defied the ban.

The move, which has been welcomed by the United States, represents a significant opening for women in Saudi Arabia, where women’s rights have steadily and slowly gained ground over the years.

Saudi women remain largely

under the whim of male relatives due to guardianship laws.

King Salman and his young son and heir, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, have tested the waters though, allowing women into the country’s main stadium in the capital, Riyadh, for national day celebrations this month.

The stadium had previously been reserved for all-male crowds to watch sporting events.

Women and men also flooded a main street in the capital, bopping their heads to pop music as green lights flickered overhead in the colour of the flag. The scene was shocking for a city in which gender segregation is strictly enforced and where women are seldom

seen walking the streets, much less mixing in close quarters with males.

The 32-year-old crown prince has also opened Saudi Arabia to more entertainment, allowing musical concerts and even a Comic-Con event as part of a wide-ranging push to reform the economy and society.

This year, the government announced that for the first time girls in public schools would be allowed to play sports and have access to physical education.

Women’s rights activists since the 1990s have been pushing for the right to drive, saying it represents their larger struggle for equal rights under the law.

Some ultraconservative clerics in Saudi Arabia, who wield power and influence in the judiciary and education sectors, had warned against allowing women to drive.

They argued it would corrupt society and lead to sin.

The state-run Saudi Press Agency and state TV reported the news, saying King Salman decreed that both men and women were to be issued drivers’ licences.

Women, however, will not be allowed to obtain licences immediately.

A committee will be formed to look into how to implement the new order, which is slated to come into effect in June 2018.

In June, the Daily Mail posted pictures of Schnabel kissing a mystery brunette in the back of a cab in London. A Croatian court has sentenced a Serb paramilitary commander and Australian citizen Dragan Vasiljkovic to 15 years for war crimes in the 1990s.

Vasiljkovic, 62, better known under his nom-de-guerre Captain Dragan, was found guilty after a year-long trial of torturing prisoners and an attack on a police precinct during an ethnic Serb uprising.

He denied all charges, insisting that the trial was “political”.

The court in Split cleared him of accusations that he murdered captured Croatian soldiers.

Vasiljkovic was born in Serbia and moved to Australia aged 15.

He returned to the Balkans amid the disintegration of the former Yugoslavia and took part in the Belgrade-backed uprising of Serbs in Croatia. The Serbs sought to split the territory they held

from Croatia and join it with Serbia proper.

At one point, Serbs controlled onethird of Croatia’s territory, but suffered a crushing defeat after four years, in the summer of 1995.

Based in Knin, the capital of a selfproclaimed Serb republic, Vasiljkovic commanded a paramilitary unit fighting fledgling Croatian armed forces.

He later withdrew to Belgrade, before returning to Australia, where he was arrested in 2006 under a warrant from Croatia and was finally extradited in 2015 after years of legal battling.

At the time of his arrest Vasiljkovic worked as a golf instructor in Perth under the name Daniel Snedden.

Slovenia and Croatia split from Yugoslavia in 1991. Bosnia and Macedonia followed shortly thereafter, leaving Serbia and Montenegro behind.

800 Words third season TV show 800 Words has such a solid narrative spine, the work feels far from backbreaking, according to actor Rick Donald who has returned for the family drama’s third season. Donald plays Woody, a laid-back Aussie surfer and the right-hand man to Erik Thomson’s character George Turner, with whom he’s formed an indelible bond on and off the small screen. “We have a really good rapport now, I think he knows what I’m going to do before I even do it,” Donald said. The cast spend seven months of each year living on set in New Zealand.

“It’s just like going back to a second home,” Donald said.

New mine owners to reap millions

New Zealand’s strong run of economic growth has been supported by a nationwide construction boom, record tourism, strong inbound migration, and the recent recovery in the dairy sector. The net inflow of migrants has largely kept wages flat, even as firms find it increasingly hard to attract skilled labour.

Yesterday’s employment confidence survey shows of the 1553 people surveyed, a net 29.8 per cent experienced past earnings growth, up from 27.8 per cent in the June quarter.

Ranchhod said earnings expectations were weak across all income groups and around the country, but particularly acute in regions like the Bay of Plenty, Wel-

lington, Southland and Nelson/ Marlborough. Consumer price inflation, which has risen to 1.7 per cent annually after staying below 1 per cent for the past few years, has also weakened consumer sentiment, he said.

“The limited pay rises many workers have received have only just been keeping pace with changes in the cost of living. And for those workers who didn’t receive a pay rise (and even for some that did), their spending power may be going backwards.”

The survey showed a net 1.7 per cent of those surveyed saw more job opportunities currently, an improvement from a net -0.1 per cent in June, while pessimism about expected job opportunities also improved to -0.5 per cent from -4.3 per cent.

More people were happier with their job security saying they expect to be more secure over the coming year compared to March.

Lyttelton Port increases annual return Lyttelton Port Co almost doubled its annual return to Christchurch City Holdings as growing freight demands across Canterbury helped boost cargo volumes through the South Island’s major maritime hub.

The council-owned port operator declared dividends of $8 million for the 2017 financial year, which it pays to Christchurch City Council’s investment arm, up from $4.2 million a year earlier and ahead of the $2 million flagged in its annual statement of intent. The company reported a net profit of $14.4 million in the 12 months ended June 30, turning

from a loss of $59.8 million a year earlier when it recognised $99.5 million of impairment charges the year earlier. Operating earnings rose 53 per cent to $13.9 million on an 8.2 per cent gain in revenue to $114.4 million.

“The port has achieved recordbreaking container volume in the year to June and a solid increase in profits,” chief executive Peter Davie said in a statement. “We are in the enviable position of having the best balance of import and export containers of any port in the country and this produces efficiencies and cost savings for our customers.”

Lyttelton Port embarked on a long-term redevelopment plan after the 2011 earthquakes, shifting its port operations on reclaimed land to the east, and is currently going through an appealed resource consent process to deepen the harbour’s channel.

The port’s container volumes rose 11 per cent to 401,711 TEUs (20-foot equivalent units) in the year, while coal exports rose 9.6 per cent to 1.18 million tonnes and bulk fuels imports were up 2.4 per cent to 1.13 million tonnes.

Log exports increased 2.1 per cent to 477,190 tonnes.

New Zealanders became slightly more confident about job opportunities in the third quarter, though fewer people predicted a pay rise in the coming year.

The Westpac McDermott Miller employment confidence index rose 0.4 points to 113.8 in the September quarter, the highest level since before the global financial crisis in 2008, with the present conditions index up 1.9 points to 115.7 while the employment expectations index dropped 0.6 points to 112.6.

Expected earnings growth dropped 3.2 points to a net 25.3 per cent of employees who anticipate a pay rise over the coming year, which senior economist Satish Ranchhod said was around the confidence levels seen during the GFC. “In part, these concerns about future earnings growth are likely to be a reflection of the very muted wage growth we’ve seen in recent years,” Ranchhod said in his re-

But the Stockton forecast margin is based on a coking coal price of $US135 a tonne while the coking coal spot price yesterday was at $US198/tonne, suggesting some upside for the company if higher prices persist.

Its 2018 forecast is for North Island production of 850,000 tonnes while its existing South Island domestic operations are expected to produce 400,000 tonnes, generating ebitda of $12 million.

The company’s stock rose 4 per cent to 13 Australian cents on the ASX yesterday, having earlier touched 18 cents, the highest since February 2014.

BT Mining, the Bathurst Resources-Talley’s Group venture that acquired coal mines from the receivers of state-owned Solid Energy, expects to reap between $65 million and $82 million from the assets in 2018 and could earn more because of gains in coking coal prices.

BT Mining, formerly known as Phoenix Coal, acquired Solid Energy’s Stockton, Rotowaro and Maramarua mines and other properties for as much as $96 million, including contingencies.

It took control of the mines on September 1 in a deal that will lift production by 1.8 million tonnes a year to 2.2 million tonnes.

Of that 1.7 million tonnes is steelmaking, or coking coal.

Stockton’s rail link runs to Lyttelton Port and it has existing steelmaker customers.

In a market update to the ASX yesterday, Bathurst said Stockton on the West Coast is forecast to produce 1 million metric tonnes of coal at an average cash cost of $100 a tonne at port and a margin of $50/tonne.

e need to celebrate milestones, no matter how big or small they might be.

Yesterday marked a special day for us here at the Guardian, with the paper turning the ripe old age of 138.

First published on September 27, 1879, the Guardian has been bringing the news to the people of this district for longer than anyone can remember – a notable achievement in what has become a brutal and cut-throat media world.

Major organisations across the country would give anything for a little of the stability that the Guardian holds and that stability all comes down to the efforts of you – our readers, advertisers and supporters.

Without you, there would be no Guardian. We wouldn’t be bringing you the daily news of this incredible district.

So, while we celebrate our own existence for such a long period of time, we also celebrate you for all that you contribute to making the paper continue to hold its own against some powerful beasts that rule the media landscape of New Zealand.

While the feel-good and happy-go-lucky stories you read on a daily basis within these pages are great – we also have a moral obligation to cover the things you might not want to read about.

To tell the stories of those who might be, to some, undesirable.

It’s all about the balance.

You’re not always going to agree with what has been said, but there’s no more poignant voice than your own so as always, we encourage you to write in if something doesn’t quite sit right.

We will never stop someone from having their say. We might suggest a better way to get the message across and out to the public, but we will never flat out deny someone their opportunity to speak and have their voice heard.

We continue to, daily, strive to bring you that news and yes, sometimes we get it wrong, but we are lucky that we have those of you out there who let us know when it does happen and are accepting of the times where mistakes do happen.

With 138 years under the belt, we’ve been here a while and we don’t intend to go anywhere anytime soon.

So, thanks for sticking with us and, most of all, thanks for your loyalty and support.

Boulevard Day The atmosphere at Boulevard Day this year was relaxed and fun, and Bob [McDonald] and I would like to thank those that made this day.

Special thanks to Sue Newman who took charge of doing articles for Boulevard Day this year as Bob and I worked through the myriad of health and safety paperwork and promoting the event got pushed to the background.

Also to Emma at the Guardian who got a list of stallholders from

us and put it on the Guardian’s new app. Once again Emma took the lead.

To our local retailers, service groups and community groups and new business – thank you for coming with products to sell and making the day fun.

Around 60 per cent of you were local as we gathered up new local site holders on the day.

To all the councillors that attended, it was great to see you in your various roles.

We also had fantastic support

from the police and St John staff with two ambulances on site most of the day, thank you for taking the lead and coming to this event as well.

To you, all Mid Cantabrians who attended the day, you made it a success as well. Three quarters of stallholders who attended are looking to book a site for next year and there are more that would love to have attended.

Not only did we have our retailers’ group supporting Bob and I this year, but guess what, we also

had the younger generation of our retailers join us in setting up and finishing the day; we reckon we are in good hands for many years now.

Boulevard Day has been going for over 40 years, a real testament to the strength of our retailers and those that have run it over the years, and I have to say the Ashburton Guardian has been a strong supporter of events in our district and, in particular, this event.

T

hey call it “the world’s fastest motorsport”.

Forget anything you’ve seen with two or four wheels in any international racing setting you care to name. This is where the real kahunas are employed – Reno, Nevada, US – home for 54 years to the National Championship Air Races.

Back in 1964, Bill Stead organised an air race near Reno and in the intervening period, the races have only been cancelled once – 2001 following the New York terror attacks.

Every September, the high desert north of Reno becomes a mecca for competition pilots, their crews and enthusiasts from all around the world.

Over the past 10 years, more than a million spectators have gathered and contributed more than $600 million to the region’s economy.

The mantra at Reno is “Fly low, fly fast, turn left” as aircraft race around a series of pylons in a left-hand circuit just a handful of feet above the ground.

At speeds that can top 500m/h for piston engine aircraft, many are highly modified World War Two-era machines, including Mustangs and Korean War era Sea Furys.

It is fast, furious and entirely unforgiving. Many obituaries have been written at Reno. It’s a sobering crossroads of naked ambition and termination.

Despite all that, unless you’re an enthusiast in New Zealand, you probably wouldn’t expect to hear too much about it, until now.

Several years ago a Kiwi Airbus A320 captain, Graeme Frew, sat in the hot stands at Reno and dreamed of migrating from the spectator position to the pilot seat.

Once he had the idea, he became fixated on preparing his restored World War Two-era Soviet Yak 3 fighter for his Reno debut. This year it was game on!

The idea gathered momentum and gradually Frew was surrounded by a core group of friends from the aviation community who possessed the necessary skills to assist him in

The tiny vintage fighter was disassembled and containerised for its trip to the US where the FREW CREW would later travel to un-crate it and fit a freshly overhauled, super race-refined sponsored Allison V12 liquidcooled engine to increase the placement prospects.

During flight testing and now at Reno with the new engine, it became apparent something was amiss.

The clock was ticking, the timing was critical, unless Graeme’s racer, dubbed Full Noise 35, was ready at the scheduled race time, it was out!

The decision was made at the 11th hour to replace the race

engine with the “stock” original engine, a three-day job. In true Anzac spirit, an Australian jet crew pushed its plane outside, gave up their hangar and the Full Noise 35 crew immediately worked right through the night.

It took 18 hours non-stop to successfully achieve the complete engine change.

That 35 race number is no accident. Right from the start Graeme felt a kindred spirit with another Kiwi racer who stitched up a world record with number 8 wire and raw determination – motorcycle racer Burt Munro, whose legend is captured for all time in the hit movie The World’s Fastest Indian.

Burt’s pictures adorned the crew’s trailer and his number 35, in the exact same font, is applied to the aircraft. They felt his presence strongly.

The idea was to head to Reno, get in amongst it and have a go.

Tick a major off the bucket list and show the world Kiwis are always willing to have a crack, no matter the barriers of budget, distance, resources and experience.

The team became the darlings of the crowd. The classic underdog. This audacious rookie crew from “Nooo Zeeeland”, the Kiwis who really can fly!

Incredibly, what followed could never have been in the script.

The little Yak thundered past

its rivals in the Bronze Heat to take first place and be bumped up to Silver. It also won that heat.

The decision then was, stay in the Silver and compete for the top honour, or bump up to the Unlimited Gold, where the big guns roam. They are super-modified 500m/h behemoths that would completely outclass the capabilities of the little Yak. But we are Kiwis right? We are not just there for the sausage rolls ... we’ll have a crack with the big boys.

And so it was, the stuff of dreams. Clearly out of its league, but in true Kiwi spirit, giving it a go. It captured the attention and the hearts of the Reno crowd.

The announcers literally raved affectionately about the rookie team from “down under” and marvelled at the audacity of bringing their act right across the world to mix it with the very best.

The team is already making plans to head back next year and take it to the world again. The potential of a Kiwi with scant resources and a head full of blind ambition knows no bounds.

Burt Munro would be proud.

More merino farmers sought to build brand Alliance is seeking more farmers to meet the demand for the SILERE alpine-origin merino season as it invests in building a premium position for the product.

The company took on full brand management of SILERE last September as part of the co-operative’s premium portfolio expansion and has spent the past 12 months exploring options to increase the markets and build lamb’s profile as a luxury dining experience for the food service sector.

Wayne Cameron, marketing manager premium products for Alliance Group, said about 40 farmers have committed to provide merino for the brand’s season, which runs from late September through until January 2018.

“We are looking for more finewool alpine-origin merino to top up supply from November into January and are currently talking with more farmers,” Cameron said.

“While we offer frozen SILERE products throughout the year, our marketing initiatives and investment programme is strongly focused on our ‘best in season’ strategy for SILERE – promoting its story and benefits to the hospital-

ity sector – with its high demand for premium seasonal produce.

“We’re getting excellent feedback from the market. Chefs are excited about best in season offerings and about the potential for different flavours. SILERE has

a very well-developed, robust flavour. In season, it has very good marbling, ensuring succulence, a finer grain and appealing density.

Cameron said the brand had a loyal core base of farmer suppliers who were very commit-

ted and understood that Alliance was positioning the brand to the food service sector with the aim of achieving greater rewards for farmers.

He said that while most merino that is part of the brand is culled at

between 12 and 15 months, there is currently “something of a renaissance” among chefs for more developed hogget flavours.

“Merino are more seasonal than crossbred lambs. They grow slowly and are often cutting their teeth as they reach optimum condition.”

Cameron said most of the brand’s farmers will say they select merino hogget over lamb for the best flavours, which offers exciting potential as to where the brand can be taken.

International promotional events are planned for the upcoming season, he said, adding that the brand had undergone a transition with the partnership and Alliance had great confidence in its future.

“It is a long-term proposition. We are currently working on building our UK and Hong Kong markets with season launches planned for both. After that, we will be looking at Singapore and Shanghai.”

Confidence down, but robust New Zealand farmer confidence has eased from the record highs of the previous quarter, but remains at elevated levels, the latest Rabobank Rural Confidence Survey, released this week, has found.

The third quarterly survey for the year shows net farmer confidence has fallen to 38 per cent, down from the record high 54 per cent recorded in the June 2017 survey.

And with the country in election mode in recent months, government policy was found to be figuring as a significant concern for those farmers taking a more negative outlook on the year ahead.

quarter) with those expecting agricultural economic conditions to worsen rising to 8 per cent of survey respondents (from 3 per cent).

Rabobank New Zealand general manager for country banking Hayley Moynihan said pastoral farmers were the primary contributors to the drop in overall confidence, with both sheep and beef and dairy farmers less optimistic about the agricultural economy than last quarter.

“Sheep and beef farmer confidence in the agricultural economy fell sharply with the net confidence reading dropping from 53 per cent last quarter to 22 per cent in this survey,” she said.

“We also saw dairy farmer confidence in the agricultural econ-

omy decline, however, the drop amongst farmers in this sector was much less significant with the net reading down from 58 per cent last quarter to 50 per cent this survey.”

The survey found government policies (46 per cent) and falling commodity prices (42 per cent) were the key reasons cited by farmers, who expected the performance of agricultural economy to worsen in the coming 12 months.

“This is the most concerned farmers have been about the influence of government policies on the performance of the rural economy since this information was first collected in July 2011,” Moynihan said.

“Policies relating to the farming sector have featured prominently

during the recently completed election campaign, and the prospect of increased government intervention within the farm-gate appears to be a contributor to the dip in farmer confidence.

“Farmers will have a much clearer idea of what, if any, changes they are likely to face once coalition negotiations are completed and the make-up of the next New Zealand government is confirmed.”

Moynihan said while farmer concerns about government policies and lower commodity prices may have contributed to lower confidence levels, the survey results indicated farmers were largely optimistic about the agricultural economy in the year ahead.

The $8m question – is he worth it?

T

his week’s announcement of Fonterra chief executive Theo Spierings’ $8.32 million annual pay packet has certainly got people talking.

In case you haven’t heard, that works out at around $160,000 a week, when the median pay for the same period is $1094 for a fulltime worker, according to Statistics New Zealand.

Some, albeit the minority, have defended Spierings’ pay level (which is made up of a base salary of $2.46 million, two performance-related incentives totalling $5.68 million, and superannuation benefits of about $177,000), saying he has met his targets so is entitled to the rewards that come with it.

Others, including at least a few dairy farmers who have taken to talkback radio or social media to vent their fury, point to the fact that many dairy farmers have struggled over the past few years and are only just making headway now. They say it is pretty tough when you’ve been through that to see the company boss creaming it, so to speak.

I can see where they are coming from. If I’d been working the long hours, no-daysoff lifestyle that many dairy farmers do, while constantly worrying about the mortgage and the bills after years of low payouts, I’m not sure how impressed I’d be to see the person who heads the co-operative

that I belong to earning that sort of coin.

However, when you consider that Spierings and his team are behind a “valueadded” strategy that has delivered $2 billion to the co-op’s balance sheet, I suppose a bit over $8 million is put into some sort of perspective.

That said, and I don’t begrudge Spierings his money, I still don’t think it’s a good look for the dairy industry overall in terms of the public eye.

Whether it’s the spiralling price of butter, or the complaints over how much a water tax would take from a farmer’s bottom line, the court of public opinion has recently been coming down tough on farmers, particularly dairy farmers.

So when someone in that same industry is cleaning up to the extent that Spierings is, it’s not surprising that envy or anger come to the fore.

Irrigation award entries open Farms and businesses with new products, technologies, or practices that exemplify innovation in irrigation are being encouraged to enter IrrigationNZ’s Innovation in Irrigation Award.

Entries for the award, which comes with a $2500 cash prize, are now open and close at the end of October.

“Previous finalists and winners have benefited from the exposure and profiling that follows and we want more innovative individuals and businesses to experience these opportunities,” says Chris Coughlan, business manager at IrrigationNZ. “The brief for the Innovation in Irrigation Award is very broad with a focus on recognising innovation in the irrigation sector,” Coughlan said.

“The awards will recognise ordinary people and businesses doing new and extraordinary things. This could range from innovative practice or behaviour, a new product or technology or innovative community thinking around irrigation.”

Presented every two years at IrrigationNZ’s biennial conference and expo, the winner in 2016 was Carrfields for its innovative irrigator stabiliser.

The HydroFix Irrigator Stabiliser System consists of a series of inflatable water tanks connected to a pulley and counterweight systems along the length of an irrigator.

During very strong winds, the turn of a tap fills the tanks with water and lowers them to the ground to secure the irrigator at the centre of each span.

When the wind danger has passed, the water tanks can simply be drained and after this they will raise themselves to a ready to activate storage position in two stages, requiring minimal effort from the operator.

The independent judging panel said Carrfields’ HydroFix system was chosen because it held wide application for New Zealand’s irrigation market and was the result of solid research involving several parties.

Other highly commended entries in 2016 were Next Farm’s smart control systems for grid irrigation, Lindsay Corporation’s new pivot control and Central Plains Water Ltd for its environmental innovations and management of its stage one development.

The wet winter is having a huge effect on well levels in the district.

Ashburton Water Zone member John Waugh said shallow wells had gone from being at their lowest level in six years in 2016 to being at their highest point possible.

Wells of a medium depth (25-35m) had also come up, while deep wells (70-90m) were continuing to rise.

Waugh said a well at Seafield had risen five metres in two months, while another at Chertsey had risen seven metres.

The wet winter, and then the massive rain event at the end of July had been the biggest recharge event since 1979, he said.

Striking delphiniums Delphiniums are not the plant for every garden. If you have a small garden or like to grow things in pots, then delphiniums are probably not for you. But for the right garden they can look absolutely fantastic.

And the right garden is one that can handle a bit of height.

Delphiniums will grow to a whopping 180cm tall. They are beautiful and bold and look great in all sorts of different style gardens. Foxgloves and hollyhock are two other tall plants which look lovely grown with delphiniums. And they also make great cut flowers.

But don’t plant too far apart as they create a great visual effect if planted near each other and they will provide extra support.

Multi-offer process can confuse Whether you’re buying or selling a property, it’s a good idea to learn as much as you can about the different methods used in New Zealand. One that confuses a lot of people is the multi-offer process, where all interested prospective buyers are encouraged to submit their best offer and the seller can choose whichever one looks most attractive.

“This process is designed to give all potential buyers an equal shot,” explains Real Estate Agents Authority chief executive Kevin Lampen-Smith.

“The process is not like an auction where an agreement is automatically formed with a successful bidder. The seller is not obliged or required to accept any particular offer in this situation; they may accept one offer, reject all offers, or choose to negotiate further with one particular party.”

The actual form that a multi-offer process takes can differ from agency to agency – it’s not defined in law or set by the Real Estate Agents Authority (REAA).

A multi-offer process can only be described as such when there is more than one offer in writing – a real estate agent is not allowed to pretend that there are genuine competing offers if they do not exist.

“Agents are expected to clearly explain the process and any relevant paperwork to all prospective buyers and sellers,”

Lampen-Smith says.

“If you’re unsure about anything, ask the agent to clarify it or seek advice from your lawyer. It’s far better to do this at the beginning than face confusion and disappointment further down the track.”

All the offers are presented fairly in this process and a real estate agent must not favour one over another.

All prospective buyers should know that they need to put their very best offer on the table, Lampen-Smith says.

Some real estate agencies will hold on to the first offer they receive while they check for others, effectively creating a multi-offer process.

“This may feel unfair if you think that your offer should ‘win’ because it was in first, but it’s worth remembering that the agent is working for the seller. Their primary responsibility is to get the seller

When thinking about the offer, it’s worth considering how you would feel if you found out a higher offer had been accepted ahead of yours.

If you think you would be prepared to pay more, then it’s better to make that decision at the start than when it’s too late.

There is often confusion around timeframes in a multi-offer process, especially if a potential buyer thinks they are the only people who are interested. Talk to the real estate agent marketing the property to make sure you are clear about any deadlines and about the sale process as a whole.

Remember that the highest offer is not always the winner. If you were a seller, would you prefer a higher offer or one with fewer conditions?

It’s impossible to guess what kind of offer will suit a seller’s particular circumstances, but it’s a good idea to eliminate as many barriers to a swift and easy sale as you can.

Want to get in early? Include an expiry time on your offer. This kind of sunset clause means the agent must present it to the seller so they can consider it before it expires.

This is important for many reasons; not least because it may help you eliminate some conditions and help you determine what your ‘best’ offer will be.

Living wall gardens Low cost and simple to install

Growing an organic living wall garden is weed-free, and easy to accomplish.

A pretty wall garden can provide masses of organic flowers, food, and herbs for apartment dwellers and homeowners anywhere in the world.

Medium cost and DIY skills required

Living wall gardening has the fantastic benefit of being low maintenance and easy to access for harvesting and allow a gardener to plant edibles in a small floor space area by growing vertically.

While well suited for urban gardeners with limited space, this technique is also amazingly accessible for small patio owners or home dwellers with tall fences surrounding their properties.

Indirect greening: This is within the skills of most competent DIYers and requires the surface to be first clad with wires or trellis. Climbing plants are then grown against it

Living wall systems: For smaller budgets, there are simple growbag-type products for walls or you can plant up one or more small panels that can be added to, depending on space and budget.

These are available from garden centres. Introduce the plants at as small size as possible, ideally as plugs. Establishment is likely to be more successful at this stage of development

Indirect greening: Large scale installations of wire, trellis or supports, such as covering the side of a house. It is the scale that makes this more expensive and needs professional installation.

Living wall systems: can use plants grown in cells containing compost or other growing media, which are connected to drip irrigation.

Harvested rainwater can be used with some systems. These are installed by specialist companies.

Bacon and egg pie Serves 6 8 large eggs 1/2 C bacon, chopped 1 spring onion, chopped 1 egg yolk, beaten with a tablespoon of water Salt and pepper to taste 400g block (or sheets) puff pastry ■ You will need a 20.5 x 20.5cm cake pan, or alternatively a round 23cm pie dish is ideal.

■ Preheat oven to 200°C. ■ Roll out two thirds of the pastry on a floury bench to line a shallow, greased 23cm pie tin.

■ Scatter over spring onion and half of the bacon, break in the eggs and season, then scatter on the remaining bacon.

■ Roll out the remaining pastry to make a lid.

■ Crimp the pastry edges together with your fingers and trim off

Club news 22 Ashburton Guardian Age Concern Ashburton The Age Concern Committee wish to advise that our nationwide agreement with the VTNZ for Warrant of Fitness discounts has been discontinued.

We offer sincere thanks to all who supported us in this venture – we greatly appreciated your consideration.

We were delighted to have two staff members from the BNZ join the Age Concern 206 Club activities for the Closed for Good campaign. They contributed a great deal to the day’s programme and answered many questions on banking issues, including the ever present threat of scams.

The 50 plus programme with Rosa Bennett is midway through its second session for the year. 10am on a Friday is the start time for this group to meet and all are welcome. Any enquiries can be directed to the office on 3086817.

Our Hip Hop participants are planning a demonstration at the chessboard during the week of International Day of Older Persons scheduled for early October.

Positive Ageing Expo – due to the overwhelming success of our 2016 event Age Concern Ashburton is again hosting a Positive Ageing expo on Thursday 8th March 2018 at the Ashburton Racecourse. More details to follow nearer the time but do keep this date free.

Ashburton Bowling Club Saturday September 23 saw the opening of the new season at the Ashburton Bowling Club. President Murray Anderson welcomed all members, visitors and 8 new members and invited the Ashburton Mayor to officially roll the first bowl and declare the season open. The flag was raised by Barry McLauchlan and the kitty was rolled by John Smart. In good weather members played 2 games and the afternoon tea was enjoyed during which time the new members were introduced to all.

The competition season got underway on Tuesday with Ladies playing drawn triples. Lists are up for upcoming championship games, so be sure to read the notice boards. In house October 14 the Ingold Tray will be played for. Please wear uniform, starting time on the board. Club rollups are on Tuesday and Thursday at 1.15, names by 1pm please. Men please get names in for your upcoming competitions (see your notice board) so the committee can organize teams.

We were sorry to hear our Patron Colleen is in hospital and we all send our “get well thoughts” to you.

Ashburton Garden Club The Ashburton Garden Club held their monthly meeting at the Senior Centre on September 21. The President welcomed members and visitor. We had a short meeting, then welcomed Michael Power who was the guest speaker.

Coming from the Ashburton Domain, with a staff of 24, they maintain 400 hectares of gardens, not to mention 12 cemeteries and outlying smaller areas. Planning for all the gardens are made in advance so seeds can be procured for the planting, etc. Given the inclement weather we have had, it has created issues maintaining normally beautifully manicured gardens in tiptop condition.

Ashburton Pakeke Lions Club The end of September and the spring feeling at last was evident with this month’s gathering attracting a good number of members and partners. The Pakeke Club had returned to having a presence at Boulevard Day and all agreed it proved to be a successful move.

The home baking and good dry firewood on offer netted a good financial outcome for the club’s charitable fund. Clip boards circulated requested helpers for Street Collections for the Blind Appeal and Pink Ribbon Day, assistance with the Borough School sports day and an indication of orders for the Lions Christmas cakes.

Ticket sales for the Pakeke Christmas raffle would commence on October 20.

Guest speaker for the evening was District Governor Lion Lorna Inch from Fairlie, who outlined how she is approaching her responsibilities within our district, her theme being Caring For Communities.

Pakeke were congratulated for the commitment that is made in service to the community. Recruitment and stabilising membership is high on DG Lorna’s agenda and she offered some ideas as to how this can happen.

Prospective members are more attracted to invitations to join a ‘gathering’ rather than too much emphasis placed on meetings.

The District Governor shared with us some of the highlights she experienced at the Centennial Convention of International Lions in Chicago.

There will be six areas of focus for the second century of Lionism, Sight, Child Cancer, Diabetes, Environment, Hunger and Youth.

In thanking Lion Lorna for her refreshing talk, Lion Barry Bluett gave an analysis of the amazing number of man hours contributed to service in our community by our club.

Lion Stuart Lovett was recognised for his 20 years of service and Lion Eric Jones for his 45 years of service.

President Lion Joe reported that protocol is being established covering Health and Safety issues. VP Lion Ron advised that plans for Charity Sale, March 4 2018, are progressing well. A reminder of the garden visit in December was given.

Next ladies craft morning will be at Elizabeth Horrell’s, 49 Albert Street, October 9.

Cavendish Club August 18 – after a visit to the movies, the members and husbands joined with members and wives of the Men’s County Club for a successful fish and chip evening enjoyed by 28 members.

September 1 – the Cavendish Club celebrated 90 years with a luncheon at Braided Rivers. 35 members attended. A very enjoyable celebration with stories of years gone by.

Garden Circle Spring Flower Show Last week Convenor Sandra Grant welcomed a large attendance of our Cavendish Club members to our Spring Flower Show where despite the changeable weather there was an amazing display of daffodils and general cut flowers.

Jane first gave us an insight into the workings by honey bees and how they help us so much in the garden. She then ran a quiz from which we learnt many interesting gardening tips from her and members. We were each given a beautiful polyanthus plant, and were able to purchase plants from the selection she had brought with her.

Afternoon tea concluded a most enjoyable time with Jane.

Cavendish Club August 25 was an afternoon of viewing a light hearted fun DVD. It was “Hip Hop-eration”. A group of ladies and men ranging in age from 70s to 98. One lady was in a wheelchair. They were from Waiheke Island and were taught their Hip Hop routines to which they were then asked to join the World Wide Hip Hop championships held in Las Vegas.

This they did and what a ball they all had.

A lovely DVD showing age has no limits to what one can do.

Afternoon tea was served with lots of chatter and laughs about how they all enjoyed the film.

Cavendish Travel Circle Our speaker Vera Hampton told us about a cruise she took with her sisters. Left Sydney (Australia) arriving Dover (England) 50 days later. Visited Great Barrier Reef out of Brisbane on to Darwin and saw lots of crocodiles, on to Singapore, Bali, India and Suez Canal having tours at each port of call. About 700 passengers, meals were fantastic and great entertainment on board.

Enjoyed company of one special passenger who adopted them as aunts.

Stayed with friends in Dover then toured England, Scotland and Ireland. Heather thanked the speaker for an interesting address.

Coronation/Phoenix Target Shooting Clubs Just when you think the season is over along comes other newsworthy items. The Mid Canterbury Target Shooting Association which encompasses the Coronation and Phoenix clubs has just received news that they are the 2017 winners of the Titipounamu (Te te poo nah moo) competition.

The competition is organised and run by the Auckland Target Shooting Association and is nationwide for teams of eight shooter A grade and below. The name comes from the name of the native bird the rifleman.

The winning team score of 2344.108 was made up by Lanelle McArthur 99.5,196.12=295.17, Hailey Beevor 99.6, 196.9=295.15, Shania HarrisonLee 99.6, 195.8=294.14, Mark Stewart 99.5, 194.9=293.14, Sandy Bennett 97.5,196.8=293.13, Bryan Hunter 99.5,193.8=292.13, Nina McKenzie 98.3, 194.7=292.10, Brian Hawksby 98.4, 192.8=290.12.

To win on the first time we have entered this competition was both surprising and pleasing.

The next four teams were Waikato 2342.112, Hutt Valley 2341.117, Wanganui 2337.99 and East Otago 2336.111.

An invitation from the Hororata/Darfield clubs to enter a team in the Hororata Highland Games meant two teams completed their targets this week. The competition is for teams of four and shooters are handicapped according to grade.

Our A team of Sandy Bennett, Colin Taylor, Shania Harrison – Lee and Michaela have posted a score of 799.27 from a possible 800.80.

The B team of Steve McArthur, Emma Smith, Logan McArthur and T.J. Stewart were not so lucky with a team score of 776.28. The top qualifiers will compete shoulder to shoulder at Hororata on 11th November at the Highland Games.

Finally this weekend three girls from our club will represent the Ashburton College at the North Island v South Island Secondary Schools championship in Palmerston North. Lanelle McArthur, Shania Harrison-Lee and Emma Smith will be shooting for places in the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ team. They will be accompanied by Coach/Manager Steve McArthur.

Travel safely, shoot well and we will be following progress with high hopes.

Mid Canterbury Ladies Friendship Club President Bernie Tutty welcomed members to our September meeting. The National Anthem was sung, apologies accepted, a visitor welcomed and birthdays acknowledged.

Our trip convenor Avis Kingsland spoke about the forth coming trip to Christchurch on September 21 and Karen McIntyre spoke about a petition she has organised against the closing of the information centre.

Our main speaker Andrea Chambers was introduced by speaker convenor Julie Begg.

Andrea spoke about Trekking in Peru with her husband. She took us through the various places she visited while trekking - Lima the capital of Peru and a city of 10 million people, Cusco, Machu Picchu and Choquequirao which is in the Peruvian Andes and is one of the most remote Inca ruins. Andrea accompanied this talk with amazing slides of these places which she had taken while there and gave us an insight into the housing, food and customs of the country.

Marion Oakden suitably thanked Andrea for her most interesting presentation.

President Bernie closed the meeting with the thought for the month which was: Don’t let age be a barrier, It is only in the mind.

Our next meeting is October 11.

Plains Ladies Friendship Club Vera welcomed everyone to the September meeting. There was one visitor. Birthdays and special Anniversaries were called for and a 50th wedding was acknowledged. There were 22 apologies.

We were advised about a Fun and Friendship Luncheon on November 3 at Riccarton Raceway and reminded about the Combined Clubs Church Service at St Stephens Church on Sunday October 8 at 10am. Matters of correspondence were dealt with and the Treasurer reported that there were still three subs outstanding. The film for October 4 is “Victoria and Abdul”.

There were two new members inducted.

A notice of motion, as requested by the IRD, adding three new clauses to the constitution was passed unanimously.

The Christmas meeting on November 27 will be held at Lake Hood.

Pam Love and Aine Whiting were the mini speakers and they reported on a day on the Combined Bus trip to Christchurch on September 21. They said it was most enjoyable and enlightening.

The bus driver provided excellent commentaries and they really enjoyed the tram trip. Unfortunately the weather did not allow then to view the earthquake Memorial wall but they were given a great trip around the rebuild area of the city instead. Food seemed to be a highlight of the day as well. They came home via the new road works at the airport and viewed the new Industrial area at Rolleston. Some amusing dittys were read to fill in time before morning tea.

Our Main speaker for the day was Michael Holdaway who came to tell us about Dental Implants.

He began showing us about the structure of the jaw and had a model of the jaw to pass around.

As he talked he also passed around examples of the new and various applications that are now available to treat our teeth or lack of them these days. Implants or partial dentures do not stop the resorption of bone which affects our facial features as we age. The big decisions of course depend on thorough investigations and good advice. Michael was thanked for his informative talk Members were reminded that next month’s meeting is a week early because of Labour weekend.

Ashburton drifter Sheldon Kneale has kicked off the drift the season in near perfect fashion.

Kneale placed second in the first round of the 2017/18 Drift South Pro Drift competition, finishing behind last season’s winner Daniel Currie.

“The field this season has a lot more drivers so placing in the top eight was always a goal,” he said.

“They normally have the five rounds spread between Timaru

and Christchurch but this year they decided to go back down to Teretonga in Invercargill.

“It is a great weekend but a bit of a long drive but well worth it.”

This is Kneale’s second season in the Pro Drift class, after picking up second place overall last season.

“There is about 10 or 15 more drivers this season so it is a lot more competitive, but (winning the competition) certainly is a goal from event to event, but it just comes down to the day but that is where I want to be,” he said.

“I’m just taking things season by season, but with some extra help from sponsors and stuff and if I was able to make it into D1NZ, which is like the national series, that would be great.

“It is where a lot of the top drivers are and it is where I would like to be.”

Despite having been successful, enjoyment is the main reason why Kneale keeps returning to the track.

“This is my sport and I do it for the enjoyment on the side, I fund most of it myself but I have had a few sponsors get on

board this season which is great, but as soon as I stop enjoying it, or there is the pressure there, I would probably stop,” he said.

As you could imagine, drifting uses up a fair few tyres, but the weekend was a relatively light weekend for Kneale.

“I took down 30 tyres and came back with 10 because it only took a couple of laps on the first day for me to feel comfortable in the car and the next day didn’t start till qualifying as there was rain in the morning,” he said.

The next event will be held at Ruapuna on December 2.

No tackling in rugby: ‘What next?’ critics ask Referees, players past and present, and pundits have reacted with sarcasm and disbelief at calls from experts to ban tackling and scrums in British schools rugby up to the age of 18 because of safety concerns.

Professors Allyson Pollock and Graham Kirkwood from the Institute of Health at Newcastle University write in a leading medical journal that most injuries in youth rugby occur due to the collision elements in the game.

They believe that removing collision from schools rugby is likely to “reduce and mitigate the risk of injury” in pupils.

Referee Nigel Owens, who took charge of the 2015 Rugby World Cup final, was blunt in his response. Owens wonders what will happen next, banning walking to school.

Owens told Newstalk ZB’s Mike Hosking on the Mike Hosking Breakfast that the most important thing in youth rugby is that players are trained properly.

“I’m quite sure what the benefits of it will be. The most important thing in the game is player safety, which is paramount in all levels of the game, particularly young people. When the kids

Former England and Gloucester centre, James Simpson-Daniel fears the game will be limited to touch rugby up to the age of 17.

The British Medical Journal article went on to say that children who wanted to play contract rugby could continue to do so at clubs outside school, but stressed that schools should not be able to enforce contact rugby.

Professor Pollock wrote: “We call on the chief medical officers to act on the evidence and advise the UK government to put the interests of the child before those of corporate professional rugby unions and remove harmful contact from the school game.”

Maggie Alphonsi is another former player who is against the proposal, saying the “benefits far outweigh the perceived risks”.

The journal argues that history of concussion is associated with the “lowering of a person’s life chances” across a number of measures including low educational achievement and premature death.

Bat widths, misconduct and the Decision Review System are all subject to change from today after changes introduced by the International Cricket Council.

The changes will kick in when South Africa host Bangladesh and Pakistan and Sri Lanka meet in the United Arab Emirates in test series starting respectively in Potchefstroom and Abu Dhabi tonight.

The most spectacular of the changes is that players can be sent off for misconduct, although how often that might happen in tests remains a moot point.

It will only apply to what are called Level 4 offences, serious misconduct such as threatening to assault an umpire, making inappropriate and deliberate physical contact with an umpire, physically assaulting a player or committing any “act of violence’’.

The width of bat edges is not restricted, as well as their thickness. Bat edges can’t be more than 40mm thick, and the overall depth at 67mm. Umpires will have a bat gauge in their pockets to check any bats legality.

Teams will not lose a review in cases where a decision remains unchanged solely as a result of an umpire’s call.

There will be no more top-up of reviews after 80 overs in an innings, meaning teams have only two unsuccessful reviews per innings, and the DRS will be allowed in T20s.

“Most of the changes to the ICC playing conditions are being made as a result of changes to the Laws of Cricket that have been announced by the MCC,’’ the ICC’s general manager cricket, Geoff Allardice said.

“We have just completed a workshop with the umpires to ensure they understand all of the changes and we are now ready to introduce the new playing conditions to international matches.”

One rule change might be alternately known as the Wagner Rule, for New Zealand player Neil Wagner.

He was given out run out against Bangladesh in Christchurch last January after having made his crease but then subsequently been off the ground when the ball hit the stumps.

From now on, once the batsman has grounded his bat, he, or she, will be considered to have made their ground irrespective of whether they stay on the ground.

Batsmen can now be out caught, stumped or run out even if the ball bounces off the helmet worn by a fielder or wicketkeeper; and airborne boundary fielders, when making first contact with the ball, must have taken off from inside the boundary, otherwise a boundary will be awarded.

The ICC will hold its next meeting in Auckland on October 10.

Croquet season all-go on Waireka greens Things are well under way on the greens of the Waireka Croquet Club.

Club days for both association and golf croquet are under way, while tournaments will soon be starting up as well.

The club will play host to the interprovincial association games between Canterbury and South Canterbury on October 2, while the Jeff Marshall Drawn Doubles is the first ‘fun day’ of the year, on October 15.

The MAGAK CNZ tournament will be one of the major drawcards in what will be a shorter season for the club, with major redevelopments to the lawns taking place in late January, early February.

English sides Manchester City and Tottenham have continued their impressive starts to their Champions League campaigns.

Manchester City have beaten Shakhtar Donetsk 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium while Spurs have won 3-0 away at Apoel Nicosia. Liverpool remain winless after being held to a one-all draw at Spartak Moscow.

Holders Real Madrid have won 3-1 away at Borussia Dortmund while there have been wins for Sevilla, Napoili, Porto and Besiktas.

Coutts out of cup The yachting world might have seen the last of Sir Russell Coutts’ involvement in the America’s Cup. Coutts, a five-time winner of the event, has been associated with the Auld Mug since 1995 as skipper of Team New Zealand and Alinghi, then as chief executive of Oracle.

At the most recent Cup regatta in Bermuda, he was the chief executive of the America’s Cup Event Authority. Speaking at the New Zealand Women’s Open proam golf tournament, he said he was an unlikely participant for the 2021 Auckland edition.

They’ve made seven grand finals in the past decade, but the 2017 Melbourne side are the club’s best, according to the Storm’s Frank Ponissi. Ahead of Sunday’s grandfinal clash with North Queensland, long-time football director Ponissi said the consistency of the current crop set them apart from the rest.

Cowboys unfazed North Queensland have brushed off a training venue snub ahead of Sunday’s NRL grand final against Melbourne. The Cowboys can’t hold their captain’s run at ANZ Stadium on Saturday due to a clash with recording artist Macklemore’s grand final rehearsal.

The Storm will get to train at the grand final venue on Saturday after booking a 10.30am session.

It is believed the Cowboys will have to travel to Kogarah Oval for their captain’s run.

Australia has been forced into a repechage route to make next year’s tournament in Russia after finishing third in their qualifying group. Time to dust the bikes off The Tinwald Cycling Club’s summer season of road racing kicks off this Sunday around the Christy’s Road, Wakanui block.

It is a good opportunity to dust the bike off, get some fresh air, and spin the wheels.

The graded scratch event will see 4 senior grades go to the line.

A and B grades will contest a

36km event while C and D grades will compete over 27km.

The juniors and division 2 will ride an 18km event with the B grade juniors covering 9km.

With an excellent programme in place indications are competitors will have exciting racing in the coming season.

The club welcomes all those in-

terested in becoming involved in the sport of cycling and caters for all abilities with the junior under 17, division 2 and senior grades.

The division 2 grade enables adult riders to ease into the sport, riding the shorter distances covered by the juniors.

The club predominately races handicap events allowing all rid-

ers the opportunity to claim the major spoils.

Juniors and division 2 are to register by 12.30pm for a 12.45pm start, while seniors are to be registered by 1.30pm for a 2pm start.

A humble Jason Day has shouldered the blame for the Internationals’ narrow defeat at the 2015 Presidents Cup but he’s determined to atone this time round. Creamer withdraws American golf star Paula Creamer has pulled out of this week’s New Zealand Women’s Open with a niggling wrist injury. Gemma McCaw not returning for Black Sticks Gemma McCaw won’t be returning for the Black Sticks despite a strong outing for Midlands at the national hockey league tournament.

McCaw has made herself unavailable for next month’s Oceania Cup in Sydney despite helping Midlands to the K Cup title after beating Northland in Sunday’s final.

Her decision is based on wanting to focus on her career and her family life with husband Richie McCaw. National hockey coach Mark Hager said he hoped the door remained open for McCaw to return but in the meantime she was focusing on work commitments and her personal life.

McCaw, who has studied for a Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science throughout her hockey career, works as a health coach.

She also writes a column for a women’s magazine.

She has played more than 200 internationals for New Zealand

Gemma McCaw is turning her back on the Black Sticks to focus on her career. and last appeared for the Black Sticks at last year’s Rio Olympics.

Eleven players from last weekend’s final have been included in the Black Sticks squad.

Singapore contract extended Expatriate New Zealand jockey Craig Grylls is having the time of his life in Singapore and has welcomed the news that his initial three-month contract has been extended until the end of the year.

“I’m absolutely loving it,” Grylls said. “It has been a great experience so far and I’m starting to get on some good horses now and I’ve got some good contacts.

“They have got great facilities here, a great track to ride on. It’s a good climate with great weather and my weight is the best it has ever been.

“I am just really enjoying it and I am so glad and so thankful I have been able to come here.”

Grylls said he has been working hard riding track work for a few trainers and has been rewarded with support on race day.

“It took me about a month until I had really broken into the place, but I think I am getting established here now and I am getting support from trainers which is a big help.”

The winner of 46 Group and Listed races, including eight at Group One level, Grylls has so far notched up five wins in Singapore and is starting to attain some quality rides in feature races.

He was booked to ride War Affair in this weekend’s $S700,000 Kranji Mile for fellow ex-pat Bruce Marsh, however the 2014 Singapore Horse of the Year was

struck down by injury.

He will now ride the Cliff Brown-trained Laughing Gravy in the first leg of Singapore’s Triple Crown series.

“I was on War Affair, but he has pulled up lame after a bit of work on Saturday, so he is out,” Grylls said. “I rode Laughing Gravy in his last start in the Committee’s Prize (1600m).

“He didn’t go too bad fresh-up, he probably just blew out being fresh-up over the mile. He’s definitely a staying type of horse, so as long as he has improved and comes through that last run well he’s got to be some sort of hope.

He’s a quality horse up here.”

With the lure of the lifestyle and prize money the Lion City offers, Grylls is hoping to continue riding at Kranji for some time to come.

“I could see myself staying here for a while,” he said. “You don’t have to travel, I live six minutes in a cab ride from the track, I have an electric scooter which I ride to work, everything is pretty convenient.

“It’s an expensive place to live but I haven’t got that many utilities or anything like that so I am able to save quite a bit and the money is very good here.

“The prize money from winning a race and even second and third, and the riding fees are very good so I am able to save a lot of money, which is a great point of being here, being able to set yourself up for life.”

Whittaker’s trainer eyes Aussie campaign The talented Whittaker resumes at Addington on Friday night, the first run of the new season for the son of Sportswriter, but he may not be here for long.

After a good winter build-up, Canterbury trainer Mark Jones is strongly considering an Australian campaign for the Queenslandowned pacer, his desire to build on his earlier plan to have a base at Menangle coming closer to fruition, and he is likely to ‘’work in with’’ fellow Kiwi trainer Tim Butt in a 20-horse barn at Sydney’s metropolitan track.

Addington in May. “I’m pleased with how he’s come up. He has had two trials and seems good,” said Jones.

“He looks way better and to be honest I wasn’t happy with him last season. He seems a lot better now. But he’s in a tough grade.

Look at the field this week, a number of them are nearly free-for-all sort of horses.”

Whittaker has drawn one on Friday night in the Vero Handicap Pace (2600m stand), but takes on the likes of Bite The Bullet, Alpha Rock and Alta Orlando.

season in the NZ Trotting Championship at Addington, has been sent north to trainers Bernie Hackett and Michelle Wallis for an Auckland campaign, beginning on Friday in a $17,000 sprint over 1700m.

“He’s better up there, handicaps are a bit fairer and the racing suits him,” said Jones.

“I could sit and wait for cup time in Canterbury, but even the Kaikoura race would see him off 15 metres. If he’s going good at Auckland he could come home for the Dominion, if not, he can stay up there and race.”

Sport Stokes arrested Ben Stokes was arrested by Bristol police and released under investigation after an incident in the city overnight that also involved England team-mate Alex Hales. Both have been dropped by England for the one-day internationals against West Indies at the Oval today and Hales is in Bristol helping police with inquiries. The Telegraph reports Stokes, 26, has had an X-ray on his hand following the incident, but the ECB declined to comment. Stokes was sent home from an England Lions tour to Australia for breaking team curfews in 2013.

Kiwis cause a boilover The New Zealand women’s eight, which includes Mid Canterbury’s own, Emma Dyke, have caused a boilover at the rowing world championships, heading off the all-conquering United States in the heats.

The Kiwi crew held their form until the end of a tense race in Sarasota, Florida, pipping the three-time defending Olympic champions by less than a second.

With only the heat winners advancing automatically to the final on Monday morning (NZT), the New Zealanders were anxious to win and avoid a

Friday repechage in the prevailing hot conditions.

Dyke, Lucy Spoors, Rebecca Scown, Kelsi Walters, Kelsey Bevan, Georgia Perry, Ashlee Rowe, Ruby Tew and cox Sam Bosworth achieved it with a terrific front-running performance.

After jockeying for the early lead with Rio Olympic silver medallists Great Britain, the New Zealanders pulled clear just after the 500m mark and kept the US at bay for the rest of the journey.

Their time of 6 minutes 08.42 seconds was the second-quick-

est overall, with Romania fractionally faster in the second heat.

They can expect a response from the stung US crew, who have won all the major regattas they have entered for the last decade.

New Zealand have four crew members back from the boat which placed fourth at Rio last year – Dyke, Scown, Bevan and Tew. The same foursome were in the eight who won silver at the 2015 world championships in France.

peat the dose on Wednesday (NZT), finishing fourth in a heat dominated by Olympic silver medallists Germany.

Stephen Jones, Brook Robertson, Michael Brake, Shaun Kirkham, Isaac Grainger, Patrick McInnes, Drikus Conradie, James Lassche and cox Caleb Shepherd will contest the repechage.

Fifth early on, they struggled to make headway in the quicker of the two heats.

Late start to 2018 ANZ Premiership confirmed Netball NZ have confirmed the late start date to next year’s ANZ Premiership, with the domestic competition to be put on hold until after the Commonwealth Games.

The 2018 national league will get underway on May 6 – three weeks after the conclusion of next year’s tournament on the Gold Coast – to prevent any disruption to the national programme.

The Commonwealth Games is the Ferns’ pinnacle event for 2018.

The ANZ Premiership will launch its 2018 season in Palmerston North with a “Super Sunday” round, which sees all six franchises in action at the same venue. Christchurch and Auckland will host the other two Super Sunday rounds next season.

Gasly replaces Kvyat French driver Pierre Gasly will make his Formula One debut this weekend at the Malaysian Grand Prix after being drafted in by the Toro Rosso team in place of Russian Daniil Kvyat.

The Red Bull-owned team said the switch “gives us an opportunity to make a more informed decision regarding our 2018 driver choices”.

Gasly, the 2016 GP2 champion, is the leading contender to replace Spaniard Carlos Sainz, who will leave Toro Rosso next season on loan to Renault.
