Ashburton police are dealing with two of the country’s most prolific youth offenders who have relocated from other districts. The two youngsters are at the centre of a small group who are responsible for the bulk of the youth offending in the district, Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield said. Some of their families are understood to have arrived in town on Work and Income subsidies under the $3K to Christchurch initiative which aimed to connect clients nationwide to jobs, primarily to boost the city’s rebuild. However, the scheme also covers Ashburton, Hurunui, Selwyn and the Waimakariri districts. Another high profile youth offender
has since turned 17 and left the Ashburton District. Banfield’s comments come amidst a growing surge of frustration within the wider community, prompting many people to vent their concerns on social media pages. In the latest incident a young offender burgled the Ashburton RSA in the early hours of Tuesday morning. A Talbot Security staff member noticed a broken window while patrolling the area and notified police. As a result a 14-year-old youth was arrested and held in custody in Christchurch overnight pending a Youth Court appearance in the Christchurch District Court yesterday morning. Strict suppression orders prevent reporting on youth court matters, however, the boy was already well known to
Ashburton police, Banfield said. “The entry point was not very big, so we pretty soon figured out who the likely offender was and picked him up with the stolen property.” Ashburton RSA bar manager John Tull said access was gained by breaking a window pane in a sliding door. The young offender made off with several bottles of spirits, two off which were dropped as he left the premises. The offending was recorded on security footage. Banfield said police will continue to crack down on youth offending and will continue to hold families accountable for keeping youngsters in check. Police officers routinely check on young people under court-ordered curfews to ensure they are at home during the required hours.
