One family, one business When you turn 140 there’s every reason to celebrate.

And that’s exactly what the Guardian did yesterday as it notched up its 140th year as the Ashburton District’s home-grown daily newspaper.

Staff and key business clients marked the event over coffee and listened to owner Bruce Bell and editors past and present talk about the role the community played in the paper’s life – as news makers, advertisers and as readers.

The Guardian is unique in New Zealand in that it is owned by the fourth generation of one family – Robert, William, John and, today, Bruce Bell.

“That’s unique in New Zealand and something I’m very proud of. Ours is one of only a very few independent, privately-owned newspapers in New Zealand and that means we live, participate in, invest in and contribute to the community,” Bruce Bell said.

Newspapers were facing challenging times and publishing was not for the faint-hearted, he said, as with the impact of Google, Facebook and Trade Me on the advertising market was strong and growing.

“Unlike our newspaper, however, all this money goes out of the community and never returns.

But we’re here and we’re determined to stay.”

Over the past 140 years the Guardian had reported without fear or favour on the important issues of the community with some of those issues having national impact. It had been part of the community’s life since the 1870s and it was his desire that that continued, Bell said.

Producing a six-day-a-week newspaper was a minor miracle, it’s like no other profession, he said.

“You arrive each day and start with virtually nothing and by the following morning you have written, subbed, selected, laid out, produced and delivered a 24page paper. And then you start all over again.”

That could not be done without loyal staff, he said.

“I also want to thank our advertisers and regular subscribers, some of whom have been readers for 70 years or more.”

Looking to the future, Bell said he was fiercely determined to continue the proud tradition of being an independent, community-focused modern media so that in 10 years time the newspaper could celebrate 150 years.

Malcolm Hopwood, editor in the 1970s and 80s, said he always considered it a privilege, as a fourth generation Mid Cantabrian, to be appointed as the paper’s editor.

“I believe our newspaper is the glue that keeps the community together, it’s that important,” he said.

was inviting then Prime Minister Sir Robert Muldoon to visit the Guardian. That visit came at a time when Muldoon was accusing journalists of writing fake news and he threatened to impose a rental fee on the Parliamentary press gallery.

Like all other editors, Hopwood wrote a letter opposing his actions but he added something more, he invited Muldoon to visit the Guardian.

“I was very proud of the Ashburton Guardian and said if he had doubts about the fair and balanced coverage of newspaper, he was welcome to come and inspect ours.”

Hopwood did not expect a response, but a week later the Prime Minister’s office phoned and said they’d be down the following week.

my life,” he said.

Muldoon arrived with a media entourage in tow and when asked if he’d like to inspect the paper’s files, his reply was gold to Hopwood’s ears – “I don’t need to, I know your reputation.”

Nearly 40 years later, those words have stayed with him, he said, and today the Guardian’s files were still open for the public’s inspection.

“They’ll show 140 years of faithful coverage of Mid Canterbury, by an independent, locally-owned and operated newspaper.”

Current editor, Matt Markham, said four years’ experience with the Guardian might be a tiny dot on the large map of its history, but the paper had been part of his life since he was old enough to say the word “newspaper”.

“It sat on the bench at home

each day and was a part of the family ritual. As the years went by that association grew from noticing its place on the kitchen bench to becoming a daily news fix,” he said.

Looking back, he believes that was when his love of writing was born, paving the way for his desire to enter a career in journalism.

“For many people in the district it’s the same, the Guardian has been a constant in their lives and that’s something we are immensely proud to play a part in,” Markham said.

In the news business your job was never done, there was always someone out there with a story to tell or someone who needed information shared with others in the district, he said.

Today the Guardian was able to tell the district’s stories to more people than ever before, not just through the newspaper but through its digital footprint that includes its Facebook page, Guardian Online and the Ashburton App. It has also launched apps in Selwyn and Timaru, Markham said.

“We have now morphed into this news-producing machine that is constantly on the move, having to adapt and change to the latest challenges thrown down by the rest of the world and the advancement of technology.”

Staff at the Guardian counted themselves lucky that the Bell family’s dedication to the business over four generations had meant it had been able to stick true to its core values of traditional news and journalism and focus largely on the local stuff that people want to know and read about, he said.

“It’s our goal to ensure we tell those stories for another 140 years, no matter what challenges or new advancements are thrown at us. We will continue to stick true to what we believe is the right way of delivering news. We will continue to produce detail of the trials and tribulations of everyday Mid Cantabrians.”

‘We need to fix this now’

Ashburton youth despairing of an uncertain future in the face of climate change joined thousands of their fellow students in strike action nationwide yesterday.

Shortly after protesters poured into Parliament grounds at midday, about 35 Ashburton College students marched with placards from their school grounds, through the Ashburton Domain.

They met with about 20 pupils from Ashburton Borough School, lining the footpath along State Highway One at Baring Square West, getting supportive toots from passing motorists, before taking their protest to outside the Ashburton District Council building.

“You will die of old age, we will die of climate change,” they chanted.

College pupils Paulina Cuadrado, 13, Chrissea Cheesman, 13, Janelle Galos, 14, Mao Nishioka, 13, and Laura Cameron, 13, took their protest inside the building.

They were received politely by reception staff as they asked to talk to councillors.

They were told none were in the building, so they left to re-join the other protesters outside.

The five were among those leading the protest, which had its origins in a Year 9 innovation class project, taught by Shelly Robson who also marched. They were joined not only by classmates, but other students from the college up to Year 13.

Students participating had the support of the college, but had to get permission slips from their parents, and they missed about 20 minutes of classes.

“Our world is down on its knees for help because we are just ruining it,” Paulina said, referring to the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation.

“It’s something we can’t figure out later, we need to fix this now,” Janelle said.

She added it was not fair to put pressure on the likes of farmers, and government needed to help agricultural and other groups in their efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

“What we do now is going to affect every single child’s future,” Mao said.

Maddie Page from Borough said students from her school at the protest, who were accompanied by teachers and the principal, felt the same way.

“Climate change is really affecting us, people aren’t noticing it yet, but soon, if nothing happens, there’s going to be really big changes,” Maddie said.

about 5000 protesters was one of the biggest to mobilise in front of Parliament since foreshore and seabed protests in 2004.

Council chief executive Jane Donaldson said late yesterday that while councillors were not present and available at headquarters, the chair of the council’s internal Climate Change Working Group did go out to meet and acknowledge the protesters in exercising their right to be heard.

And council had recognised the need to address climate change earlier this year by adopting a Climate Change Policy in May this year.

About 50 students took to the streets in Ashburton yesterday to protest for action on climate change.

Rosa is a reluctant champion

People who are big contributors to their community don’t come much more modest than Rosa Bennett.

When the team at Age Concern wanted to present her with a certificate of national recognition as an Age Concern Dignity Champion, they struggled to prise her out of her beloved kitchen at the Ashburton Seniors’ Centre.

That kitchen is Rosa’s happy place – teapot in hand or delivering some of her freshly-made scones to 206 Club members, those are the activities she enjoys.

Ask her to step into the limelight and she’s running for cover.

But on Friday she was asked to step up and be recognised for her work with older New Zealanders.

Rosa might be nearly 90 but she continues to be one of the driving forces behind the 206 Club, arranging regular speakers and taking charge of the kitchen. It’s a role she loves, but modestly says the club is about the members, not about her.

In a letter of commendation, Age Concern New Zealand chief executive Stephanie Clare told Rosa she embodied the Dignity Champion pledge because she championed the rights of older

member recognising her 30 years plus service.

was to ask what she was going to do with the meals because she was still cooking every day.

In 1986 when a group that looked at ways to meet the needs of older people in Ashburton,

Rosa was a member of the steering committee set up in conjunction with Ashburton Hospital. She represented community groups on that committee and became a member of what was initially known as Mid Canterbury Aged Person’s Welfare Council. The name changed to Age Concern in 1991.

The 206 Club was established in 1990 and Rosa volunteered to be its cook, providing a two-course midday meal each meeting. She continued in this role until last year.

She was also the instigator of, and is still involved with, a 50plus education programme that operates for six weeks twice a year.

The Age Concern team describe her as a master chef who still provides large quantities of food for afternoon tea or for bigger events.

She’s quick to say she’s no expert in the kitchen, however.

“I’m just an ordinary cook and an ordinary person.”

In accepting her award, Rosa told fellow members that they were a big part of her life.

“I do what I love and I don’t expect anything in return for it. You are the 206 Club.

“You come, you’re loyal and I love you all.”

Good progress in investigation

Police are widening the area of their enquiries as they make ‘good progress’ in their investigation into the homicide of Rakaia dairy farm worker Tony Waldron.

It is now the second weekend since he was found with fatal injuries in his bed at his Gardiners Road property by a colleague, after he failed to show up for the morning milking on the dairy farm where he worked.

A scene examination was carried out at that property, and police conducted a search warrant at a second Gardiners Road address.

Police have now completed their scene examination at that second property, which included effluent and irrigation ponds, and are now turning their focus to the Rakaia riverbed, detective senior sergeant Richard Quested said.

“The enquiry team have executed a search warrant at a property in Papanui in Christchurch and a scene examination is underway there,” he said.

“A vehicle has also been seized and that too will be forensically examined in the coming days.

“The enquiry team continue to work long hours and are leaving no stone unturned in the hunt for those responsible for Mr Waldron’s death.”

Police Specialist Search teams were scouring the Rakaia riverbed on Friday afternoon looking for evidence in the Tony Waldron homicide investigation.

When asked if the public can expect a resolution to this investigation soon, Quested said he expected there to be a successful conclusion.

“The enquiry team are putting in a big effort and working long hours,” he said.

“I fully expect to bring this enquiry to a successful conclusion

and hold anyone responsible to account.”

Quested said they are conducting a thorough investigation and following a number of lines of enquiry, but that there is no indication the attack is gang related.

The detective senior sergeant was also unable to elaborate about those police believe were responsible for Waldron’s death other than that police do not

believe this to be a random attack.

“I also do not believe there is any risk to the public in general,” he said.

Police are still asking anyone with information that could assist the enquiry to contact them on 105 or go to the nearest police station.

National party defies Parliamentary video order NZME National has thumbed its nose at Parliament’s Speaker, defying an order to take down attack ads featuring rival MPs. With 10 minutes before Mallard’s 5pm deadline National Leader Simon Bridges said in a statement National had no plans to take their videos down.

“Freedom of speech is of fundamental importance to our Parliamentary democracy and to New Zealanders.

Tighter rules for parachute landings

“Yesterday’s (Thursday) Speaker’s ruling has regrettably put the National Party in the worst of all positions.

“The Speaker has neither referred the matter to the Privileges Committee for a definitive public hearing, nor ruled in our favour as we believe he should.”

Mallard ordered all political parties to take down any videos they had made which feature MPs in the House who had not given their consent.

He gave parties, specifically Na-

tional, a 5pm yesterday deadline.

“While there has been some discussion about what constitutes a ‘political advertisement’, it is clear to me that videos that support one party or to aim to reduce support for another party are the sorts of items covered by [Parliament’s rules],” he told MPs. His ruling followed a National video which featured Labour MP Deborah Russell that showed her making a speech about wellbeing, but trailing off-topic and on to Greek philosophy.

However, Mallard’s ruling only applied to videos which used footage within the last year.

In yesterday’s statement, Bridges said the ruling “attempted to stop us from holding the Government to account by drawing attention to Parliamentary proceedings”.

Mallard has pushed the matter to a process which effectively “gags us for a significant period of time”, Bridges said.

Commercial sky diving activities at Ashburton Airport are set to come under tighter controls.

The airport’s owner, the Ashburton District Council, has drawn up a new set of rules in a draft memorandum of understanding that will see parachutists restricted in the areas they can land.

Councillors took their first look at the draft at Thursday’s council meeting. The changed landing zones were introduced after a number of airport users raised concerns over current landing areas. The main change requests was for the parachute landing area to be amended to a location that is further away from the hangar sites and the taxi-way.

The new drop zone is defined as the quadrant bounded by Seafield Road and the north to south Zero 2 runway.

A swoop pond is planned for this area and land has also been designated for spectators, but councillor Alasdair Urquhart suggested the new zones would impact on the warm-up area for aircraft using that runway. He wanted the corner of that quadrant taken out of the landing and spectator zone.

“If you leave them with the whole area it will lock up the airfield too much,” he said.

The memorandum of understanding was still a working document, council commercial manager Colin Windleborn said, and issues raised could still be addressed, he said.

The swoop pond was still only an idea and, if it was developed, its operator Skydiving Kiwis would be paying a commercial rate to lease that area of land, Windleborn said.

LDA champs a sell-out success

Ashburton’s first-ever schools’ dance championships was a sell-out success at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre on Tuesday night.

Teams of dancers from Ashburton area primary and intermediate schools presented items at the 2019 Mid Canterbury Dance Champs after being tutored by Life Dance Academy (LDA).

LDA teachers Anna Raukawa and Madi Wilson came up with the idea for the championships as they wanted to provide an opportunity for Year 1 to Year 8 children to have fun through the medium of dance.

The school runs under a charitable trust and was set up about four years ago with the mission to provide affordable lessons. It is based at Tinwald and teaches a range of genres, including fusion dance, jazz, ballet, lyrical and hip hop.

Raukawa’s and Wilson’s dream turned into reality on Tuesday night, as the sellout crowd was in awe of the choreography, co-ordination and charisma of teams as they presented items to a range of pop songs.

Audience members even got to join in, and at the end of the show following prizes being presented, Wilson led the house in the song Everybody Walk the Dinosaur.

Fears raised over business case for second bridge

A business case for the second bridge across the Ashburton River is being prepared, but the process is raising more questions than it is providing answers.

It is being prepared by the council and the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) and is part of the process required to establish a clear economic benefit for a funding application.

In preparing the business case the whole project will be revisited to assess its viability and to be certain the proposed siting (at the end of Chalmers Avenue) is

At Thursday’s Ashburton District Council meeting, several councillors raised concerns over its parameters and the suggestion that this would include an assessment of whether the site chosen was the right one.

“This is probably one of the most contentious things I’ve been involved with, it split the council and it split the community,” Russell Ellis said.

“My biggest problem is my lack of faith in NZTA. “Council has spent a lot of time and money talking with NZTA on projects but nothing

has happened.”

Ellis said he would hate to see the council spend any more money until it had a commitment from NZTA as to where it was going and that it would actually do something.

Peter Reveley was concerned that the incorrect traffic count numbers had been used when the site decision was made.

“If those numbers are used again we’ll end up with something that’s inadequate,” he said.

ond bridge was in the right place, but chief executive Hamish Riach assured him the 17 site options originally in the mix would not be revisited.

It was not about trying to second guess the bridge’s siting, he said.

If the $35 million tagged in the council’s longterm plan proved to be inadequate after the business case was prepared, what would happen, Alasdair Urquhart asked.

If that happened the council would have to consider the ramifications and make a decision, Riach said.

Councillors farewell their peers At the final Ashburton District Council meeting for this term three retiring councillors were honoured by their peers as well as making their own speeches reflecting on their time around the council table.

Sue Newman caught up with the retiring councillors.

Peter Reveley Long-serving councillor Peter Reveley was farewelled by Selwyn Price who described him as a tenacious councillor who stood by his principles.

“He reminds me of a terrier chasing a truck down a country road, someone who was happy to stand alone, a man who wouldn’t sell his soul,” he said.

His representation of the rural community was done with passion, honesty and in dogged pursuit of the truth, Price said.

“He’s a man it’s been a pleasure to serve with and no doubt he’ll pop up as citizen Reveley submitting on a policy or two.”

Ever modest, Reveley said he was retiring because he’d reached the age where it was the commonsense thing to do.

After 54 years involved in community organisations, it was time to step back, he said.

“Yes, I’ve certainly stood my ground on issues, and I’ve got offside with many inside council but I’m retiring, no one is indispensable.”

Democracy was alive and well around the council table, Reveley said, and that meant there were times when he had to sit back and accept he was wrong.

“Although I do think some people around the table haven’t done their homework,” he said.

While he was proud of many of the things that had been achieved on his watch, Reveley was happy to fire a few parting salvoes at councils of the past decisions he didn’t like.

He counted as a failure his inability to get a large gum tree by the Hinds Domain fire shed felled and the saga around the second bridge across the Ashburton River was a ‘bloody disgrace’, he said.

“It’s in the wrong place and we’ve only shifted the problem.”

Reveley had retired mid-term during the time the art gallery and museum project was under way, and that was the reason behind his departure he said.

“I bailed from council because I could see that farming was a whole lot better. This was such a poor decision and ratepayers will continue to prop it up.

And climate change? Well that’s the new disease, Reveley said, and there will be no changing his mind on that.

Alasdair Urquhart Russell Ellis Stuart Wilson paid tribute to Russell Ellis saying he was a councillor whose wise input into discussions would be missed by the council.

“We’ll miss your considered debate on virtually every issue. You are the person who usually comes up with a compromise we can usually accept,” he said.

When Ellis was elected in 2013 it came after he had been a speaker at public submissions on council spending and after he had led a several thousand strong rally against the art gallery and museum project.

“When he was elected to council I thought we’d have a real firebrand, but he’s a wise man,” Wilson said.

Ellis said he was disappointed not to be standing for re-election but didn’t rule out chasing a seat at the next election.

“Have I enjoyed my time? Absolutely. Have we got everything right? Absolutely not, but we do get the majority right. Sometimes we’ve had to make some tough decisions, but that’s what we’re elected to do.”

One of the great things about being a councillor was that you could have strong debate with people with different points of view during a meeting, but when the meeting ended you were still on the same team and could share a drink together, he said.

Diane Rawlinson described two-term councillor Alasdair Urqhuart as a ‘quietly determined’ man.

“He may be quietly spoken but when Alasdair decides to get things done he keeps on going and does the job to the highest possible standard,” she said.

As the quiet voice around the council table, Urquhart said it would come as no surprise to his fellow councillors that he didn’t have a lot to say in his retirement speech.

“I got off to a rocky start after being sworn in and then being told at the first council workshop that I wasn’t allowed to have an opinion, that I could only comment on the points in front of me. that was a major learning curve,” he said.

The council’s decision on the second bridge site was a disappointment and that had taught him not to place too much trust in anyone, he said.

“I do my homework to the best of my ability and in most cases, if you read things properly, then your questions will have been answered,” he said.

His advice for councillors of the future was to stick to core services, strive for fairness and not to spend too much time on the ‘fluffy stuff”.

“You’ll find everything is controlled by so many process it is a bit frustrating,” he said.

In leaving, Urquhart said he wouldn’t forget about the “shed up the road” (art gallery/museum) that the council was trying to mop up.

“I’ve enjoyed my time on the council and I’d like to think I’ve represented the people of the district okay. Sometimes I’ve had to support something I and other people have disagreed with, but that’s democracy.

Fay’s calling time on the trust It was a tough decision, but decision made, retiring Ashburton Trust chairwoman Fay Watson said she is stepping down from her role knowing she’s leaving an organisation that is well set up for the future.

Come next month’s local body election Fay’s name won’t be on the ballot papers. She’s completed nine years around the trust board table, the last three of those as its chairwoman.

“It’s time to step down and create a space for someone new to bring different skills and ideas to the table,” she said.

Her relationship with the trust, however, is much longer than her nine years as an elected board member – in 1986 she took up the role of financial officer and, apart from a two-and-a-half year break, has been part of the business for a total of 33 years as an employee or board member.

“I’ll miss it and at the moment I feel a bit sad that I’m not standing again, but after the election I know it’ll be different,” she said.

Knowing the trust had a strong board with a very healthy culture and a good mix of professional, life and business skills around the table made the decision much easier, Fay said.

Over her years she has worked with the trust in all of its incarnations, except its inception in 1948.

“When I stepped on to the board it was on a fairly rocky road with an uncertain future, but over the last two terms the board has turned the ship around and it now has a solid future. The trust would make a great case-study for a student on the life cycle of a business.”

The trust had been through the full business cycle from start up, its development, the plateau, the decline, a restructure, consolidation and a new direction that set it up for the future, she said.

At its peak the organisation was directly operating the Hotel Ashburton, Tinwald and Somerset Taverns, country taverns at Mayfield, Mt Somers and Hinds and bottle stores in Allenton and onCass Street.

grants from those trading profits, Fay said.

But the hospitality environment was changing and the writing was on the wall. Country taverns needed to be run by someone with skin in the game, rather than managed by the trust, and eventually the businesses and real estate were sold. That was the beginning of what was to be a long string of changes, some pushing the trust to its trading limits.

“I’ve seen the trust venues evolve, get refurbished, expand, get refurbished again and constantly adjust to meet the markets and remain viable,” she said.

Probably the most significant change in the trust’s life was losing its liquor sale monopoly. It survived two community polls but lost the third in 2004, clearing the way for supermarkets to sell wine and beer.

That’s a change that still disappoints Fay, as profits on liquor sales no longer go back to the community, but the community wanted choice and that was the price that was paid, she said.

That loss of monopoly kick-started a period of rapid ex-

pansion as the trust sought to carve out new sources of revenue – Speight’s Ale House was established, the Somerset Tavern was demolished and replaced with Somerset House, The Somerset Grocer was opened, along with The Shed, Braided Rivers Restaurant, Hades Pizza and the Tinwald Motels.

During the same period drinkdrive rules became tougher and the council adopted a local alcohol plan that made it tougher for late night venues to make money, she said.

“It was too much too quickly and only some of the new businesses were successful. Ultimately the trust went through six years making losses and the writing was on the wall.”

That loss making run saw the trust forced to make some hard decisions, resulting in a restructure that would see it develop a new, sleeker business model. It sold off all of its hospitality businesses, apart from the Devon Tavern, and became a landlord only.

“It’s been quite a journey to be on the board through that phase, but there was no doubt about the

path the trust was on in its life cycle and it had to be reinvented to make sure it had a future. Since that restructure we’ve been profitable. It turned the ship around.”

The trust was now in a sound position as an investment business and had become an inter-generational organisation that would be there for the community as well as its grandchildren’s grandchildren, Fay said.

As the trust has reshaped, its administration headquarters has changed. In Faye’s early days as financial controller, a staff of around 100 was employed; today there is just one fulltimer and two part-timers.

Over the years the trust’s donations’ policy had changed, but what hadn’t changed was its commitment to giving back to the community, she said.

A gaming machine Charitable Foundation was formed in 1990.

Over many years $100,000 in donations and grants was given away every year from the trading operations, as well as a total of $26 million from gaming profits over the past 19 years.

The foundation is now part of

the Lion Foundation, but the giving continues. Decisions are still made locally, it’s just the paperwork that’s taken care of out of town.

For Fay, stepping down as trust chairwoman also means severing a 33-year tie to the trust.

Yes, there were things she would still like to do if she’d sought re-election, such as being on the executive of the New Zealand Licensing Trust Association.

“But, after more than 30 years, that’s nearly half my lifetime, I’m happy to step down and provide an opportunity for someone else to come through. Every organisation needs new blood coming through and those involved have a duty to allow that to happen.”

She’ll miss being part of the trust, but Fay said she knows she’s leaving behind an organisation that’s in great heart in the hands of a talented board.

She’ll continue working as a chartered accountant, but with her trust board experience behind her, she’ll be looking for other board opportunities.

“You don’t go to as many board meetings as I have done without learning a thing or two. I’d like to be able to contribute to other local communities through board roles.

Board governance is where my interests lie.

And she’ll continue to follow the trust as it moves through the coming years.

“You don’t walk away from over 30 years. Your interest doesn’t just stop. I’ll be at the AGM and I’ll keep an eye on them. It’s been a real pleasure with this current board to have such a great working culture around the table. Not

A hard working leader in o Paul David Skinner September 5, 2019 Paul Skinner has taken off with a burst and is in the lead in a dirt-bike race captured in a framed photo which hangs in the hall of his Netherby home.

Mud flies from under his rear tyre, and tall mountains with a skiff of fresh snow in the Ashburton Gorge provide a picturesque backdrop.

The photo is from a recent dirt bike race, and today serves as testimony to his family of a man who lived life to the fullest.

The Skinners Bikes Mowers and Saws operator was also a leader and hard worker in the community, known for throwing himself into everything he did with passion, energy and a down-to-earth sense of humour.

Paul grew up in Kyeburn, Central Otago, attending school there and then later at Ranfurly. He left after the sixth form to take up an apprenticeship as a motorbike mechanic in Alexandra, at Davidson Honda.

It was his dream job, and he was able to indulge his passion for motocross, while also spending time on weekends playing rugby for the local club.

He joined the town’s Roundtable group, beginning what was to become a dedication to a wide range of organisations and community groups throughout his life.

Nicknamed Skinny, he revelled in the social side of playing rugby, and it was through a friend in these circles that he met wife Andrena at the age of 23.

The couple moved to Ashburton, where Paul established a mowers and chainsaws servicing business with his father David in 1997. The father and son pair had been looking for an opportunity to work together as David retired from agricultural contracting and Paul wanted to move into his own business.

Skinner’s Mowers was founded, operating on Moore Street, as the pair developed it from the business of Wilson’s Mowers they had bought.

Paul and Andrena returned to Alexandra to have their wedding in 2000, wanting to marry in the town where they met, and to be surrounded by their wide circle of old friends. Son Jacob arrived the following year.

In coming years the development of Lake Hood took off, and Paul and David decided to add boats to their staple of

machinery service. They moved to a larger premises on Wills Street and lengthened the name to Skinners Mowers Chainsaws and Marine. Following David’s retirement in 2006, Paul scaled down operations to no longer include the marine side, and moved the shop to Netherby.

The Skinner family made their home in Netherby where Jacob attended Netherby School. Paul joined the local Jaycees and operated his mowers and saws business at the local shopping centre.

He became involved in school life and became elected to the Netherby School board of trustees in 2011, serving two three-year terms, the final one as chairman.

Principal Phil Wheeler recalls a dedicated and hardworking chairman, jovial on the surface but a thinker when it came to giving time and consideration to issues.

He would make decisions based on common sense and was a man of integrity. And the school benefited from his mechanical skills and knowledge of tools when it came to ground improvements and maintenance.

Jacob joined the scout movement at a young age, and it was not long before Paul was attending as a parent help. Scout leaders remember him asking plenty of questions, and wanting to know how the organisation encouraged and supported youth.

He soon became a cub leader and then a scout leader, assisting at many zone events such as camps and hikes, and attending jamborees, revelling in helping out the kids and joining in on group activities, with his favourites being motorbike riding, abseiling and scuba diving.

Paul was considered the computer guru in many of the organisations he was involved with, and was able to use his strengths in this area to help in the planning of activities and social media communication.

Mid Canterbury proved to be the perfect base to pursue his passion in dirt bike riding, which he did both competitively and recreationally.

He made this an activity the family could enjoy together, and they would go away in their campervan to surrounding hill country and other sites.

The campervan was used for holidaying as well, and the Skinner trio would meet up with extended family to enjoy the great outdoors at various locations from the Catlins to the top of the South Island.

Paul hung up his motocross boots fol-

lowing breaking his ankle in an accident, but it just meant he got into road biking instead, and he had a constant companion in Jacob who was an enthusiastic convert.

The pair joined Motorcycling Canterbury Incorporated, competing in races throughout the region. Paul holds the lap record for development senior at Ruapuna, his time around the track being one minute and 52.802 seconds, which he achieved in 2016.

Paul’s racing number was 11, and following his death the club decided it should forever be held in his honour.

The number is still highly visible on the track at each event, with Paul’s former long-time friends and fellow riders having had it printed on the sides of their bikes.

The members revealed this for the first time at a tribute ride earlier this month at Ruapuna, where Jacob rode his dad’s bike.

In more recent years Paul extended his

bike riding to include mountain biking, and he joined the Mid Canterbury Mountain Bike Club where he quickly became an avid member.

He helped out on many a working bee and with organising events, once again using his computer skills to get the word out on social media.

Paul is remembered by fellow mountain bikers as having made a huge contribution to the club, spending countless hours guiding, teaching, fixing bikes and undertaking maintenance on the club’s tracks.

Paul is a former winner of the Wanaka to Arrowtown Motatapu Marathon e-Bike event, while other favourite events included the annual Mt Somers Mountain Challenge, and the McDonald’s Ashburton 6 Hour Mountain Bike Race.

Once again, he would not only be competing, but helping out, and at the latter event last year members remember

him being busy with repairs and service on their bikes.

Paul was also an accomplished photographer, not only using his skills to record events and happenings in the many groups he was involved with over the years, but also in a creative capacity.

Some of his works are displayed in the 2009 and 2010 editions of The Lightbox Collection, an annually published book of photos submitted from around the world. Among images is two lions at Orana Park, for which Paul won an award.

Paul’s sense of humour ensured he would not only take photos, but pop up in them himself from time to time as he photobombed other’s efforts. He was also a dab hand at Photoshop, and he made his family laugh when he made a second copy of that photo hanging in the hall of him racing with the mountain backdrop, putting himself as every rider in the race.

Paul died suddenly earlier this month, aged 47. He is survived by wife Andrena and son Jacob, 17.

Consumer confidence fell to its lowest level in four years as people grew more wary about the future, but low interest rates mean people still think it’s a good time to buy big-ticket items.

The ANZ-Roy Morgan consumer confidence index fell to 113.9 in September from 118.2 in August with the current conditions index down 1 point at 126 and the future conditions index down 6 points at 106.

Confidence remains below the historical average of 120 as “consumers are particularly wary about what the future may bring,” said ANZ chief economist Sharon Zollner.

Of the 1,000 respondents to the consumer confidence survey, a net 11 per cent said they are better off now than they were a year ago, down from 16 per cent in August, while a net 23 per cent expect to be doing better in 12 months, down from 27 per cent in August.

Perceptions regarding the next year’s economic outlook for the country as a whole fell 9 points to a net 10 per cent expecting conditions to worsen, the lowest in four years.

However, a net 41 per cent still see now as a good time to buy big-ticket items versus 39 per cent in August.

Lower interest rates are likely behind the robustness in the proportion of people thinking it is a good time to buy a major household item, said Zollner. The tight labour market is another key support, although employment indicators have deteriorated markedly and is a vulnerability going forward, she added.

The central bank left the official cash rate at a record low 1 per cent earlier this week but signalled “there remains scope for more fiscal and monetary stimulus, if necessary, to support the economy and maintain

our inflation and employment objectives.”

Respondents predict prices will rise an annual 3.5 per cent over the next two years, up from 3.2 per cent in August.

Those surveyed still expect house prices to lift 2.8 per cent a year, unchanged from the prior month.

Zollner said the composite gauge of the business and consumer surveys is in line with her view that while “slippage in economic growth is set to continue over the second half of the year as the economy battles headwinds, the fundamentals for the New Zealand economy remain decent.”

Contact Energy says its decarbonisation efforts are gaining momentum, with a new contract close on a project to install an electric boiler for an industrial user.

James Kilty, the firm’s chief generation and development officer, says there is “very real interest” from commercial and industrial users wanting to come off coal and gas.

He wouldn’t name the company Contact has been working with, nor the size of the boiler to be installed. But he said Contact is in necessarily lengthy discussions with several firms. Any agreements resulting will be more in the form of partnerships, including long-term contracts, given the scale of investment required on both sides.

Contact shares last traded at $8.55 and have gained about 45 per cent this year.

Heavy industry accounts for about 15 per cent of the country’s emissions. Food processing, including dairy and meat processing, is heavily reliant on hot water and steam and accounted for about a third of the almost 9 percent of emissions that came from manufacturing in 2016, according to government data.

Fonterra is trialling both electrification and biomass as part of its emission-reduction strategy. Other firms are switching from coal to gas, or from coal to wood. Synlait Milk installed a six megawatt electrode boiler at its Dunsandel plant to reduce its coal use there.

Fonterra, New Zealand Steel, Refining NZ, Oji Fibre Solutions and Pan Pac Forest Products are working with the Major Electricity Users’ Group to test whether a long-term power purchase contract for part of their combined load can bring forward development of renewable electricity at a material scale.

Contact, the country’s second-largest energy retailer, makes more than 80 per cent of its electricity at dams on the South Island and at its geothermal fields around Taupo.

It is currently drilling at the Tauhara field as

part of a plan to expand generation there so it can reduce its use of gas-fired generation, or to provide firms with direct steam field heat for processing.

The firm is aiming to remove about 60,000 tonnes of CO2 by 2022 by helping industrial customers displace about one petajoule of fossil fuels with electricity.

The company said it had increased the emissions reduction it is seeking across its own generation activities and brought forward the target by four years.

It is now seeking a 34 per cent reduction in own-generation activities’ emissions by 2026 . The previous target, announced in April, was for a 30 percent reduction by 2030.

It is also seeking a 30 per cent reduction in emissions from within Contact’s suppliers’ products and services by 2026. The earlier target was 15 per cent by 2030.

About 80 per cent of Contact’s generation emissions come from its gas-fired assets in Taranaki, with the balance from the geothermal business.

Kilty says the emission reduction can be achieved by replacing gas capacity with geothermal. But that did not mean the company was yet committed to shutting its ageing 377-megawatt Taranaki Combined Cycle plant, or that it is going ahead with the first stage of generation development at Tauhara.

He says the new targets are required if the firm’s goals are to align with minimising global warming to the 1.5°C targeted in the 2015 Paris agreement on climate change.

But they also reflect the firm’s confidence that the reductions are achievable.

The company concluded a steam supply deal with Norske Skog-owned Nature’s Flame business in July, and the firm’s joint-venture with industrial energy specialist Simply Energy has also improved its discussions across that sector, Kilty said.

Kilty says the drilling at Tauhara is going well and all indications are that the resource will probably be better than the company expected a decade ago when it sought consents for generation development there.

Students still missing NZME That weekend began like so many others in the southern Mexico town: The main square hosted a political rally, and there was a soccer match nearby.

Students from a rural teacher-training college were trying to secure buses for a trip to Mexico City.

But what happened on that Friday, September 26, 2014, has become a symbol of the violence, impunity and broken rule of law that plagues Mexico.

By the end of the night, six people were dead, and 43 of the students, last spotted being forced into police trucks, had vanished.

Five years later, their whereabouts is still unknown, their cases unsolved.

They are now among the more than 40,000 other people in Mexico who are registered as disappeared, many in the country’s drug war.

This much is known: In one violent and chaotic night, local police officers, working with a criminal gang and the mayor, stopped and shot at the buses carrying the teacher-training students.

Later, they fired at others also on their way out of town – taxis and the soccer team’s bus – though they were not connected to the students.

There is still no information about what exactly happened, why, who was involved or even where the students are.

The country’s president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who took office in December, promised he would do better than his predecessor.

To find out what happened in the town of Iguala that day, he created a special commission, named a special prosecutor and, more recently, announced a new inquiry after the courts ordered the first, heavily criticised investigation redone.

A federal judge also recently dismissed charges against 77 individuals implicated in the crime, arguing that widespread torture was used to force confessions.

“This is a chance to show that such an investigation must be legally conducted from top to bottom,” said Ángela Buitrago, a Colombian lawyer and member of the group of international experts originally invited to investigate the case, and an adviser to the new inquiry.

“That is what makes a state legitimate.”

The events of that night – and the government’s failure so far to uncover basic facts about what happened to the missing students from the Raúl Isidro Burgos Teachers’ College – have changed the lives of those it touched.

Every month, on the 26th,

their parents trek nearly 320km each way to Mexico City, having found purpose in a ritual of protest.

“As someone who carries the burden of losing a son, you try and fight in the hopes that the others are found alive and well,” said Inés Gallardo, 40, whose son was one of three students killed that night.

On its fifth anniversary, the Times spoke with those directly affected by the events of that night.

Three days passed before Cristina Bautista Salvador knew her son, Benjamín, was missing.

In the tiny mountain village where she lived, there is no cellphone service, and many speak the local language, Náhuatl. Very few residents speak Spanish.

Her son’s live-in college, the Raúl Isidro Burgos Teachers’

College in the town of Ayotzinapa, was three hours away.

But after trying to call him and getting no answer, she raced there Monday, taking two vans and a taxi, to find out what happened.

The search for answers would so consume her that she didn’t return home for three years.

After Benjamín disappeared, she learned to speak Spanish.

It was the only way to communicate with officials and lawyers or to publicise the case, which she has done in Colombia, Argentina, the United States and Brazil.

Today the turnout in the marches has dwindled.

“Whether there be many or few, nationally or internationally, we’ll keep pushing until we find out what happened,” she said.

“Until we find them.”

Departing councillors leave yawning gap E

lection time is always a time of new beginnings and new opportunities.

It’s a time when we have a chance to vote for new faces around a council table and a time where we can reconfirm the value of those already there, acknowledging the good service they’ve given and rewarding them with a chance to do the same again for another three years if they’ve performed to expectations.

But it’s also a time for a few regrets, when we farewell councillors who, for a variety of reasons, have chosen to end their local body career. And so it was in Ashburton on Thursday.

This election, three sitting councillors have just signed off, made their valedictory speeches and been farewelled by their peers.

tire; the third, through a ballot paper misadventure, has had his chances of furthering his career prematurely ended.

But, however, and why ever those three are standing down, each deserves some kudos for a job well done.

In different ways Peter Reveley, Russell Ellis and Alasdair Urquhart have served their community well.

Reveley has been one of the council’s stayers. He’s been on council since 2004, with a

15-month break, and he’s been one of those councillors who’s more than made a mark.

He’s variously been described as tenacious, a man of principles, a wild child, a loan wolf, but above all he’s been a councillor who has been singularly unafraid.

If he disagrees with something that’s going on he’ll say so, if the council’s voting for something he doesn’t agree with, he’ll vote no.

And he’s never minced words.

Yes, he’s probably been a pain in the butt to many of his peers, a man to dread for many council staff, but he epitomises what a good councillor should be – someone who’s prepared to stand up and be counted.

Odds-on over the years, Reveley has headed home after a meeting or two wishing he’d kept his mouth shut, knowing he’s got

himself off-side with at least some fellow councillors – again.

But he’s never backed down, never been prepared to compromise and never simply gone with the flow because it’s easier.

The new crop of councillors could take some lessons out of his book.

And then there’s Alasdair Urquhart.

He’s been the quiet councillor, the man who has looked and listened.

He might not have been the most vocal person around the council table, but he’s a councillor who always came well prepared, well read and if he had an issue to raise, he could always back it up with facts.

Urquhart’s quiet presence and deep knowledge of issues will leave a gap.

The third departer, Russell Ellis, is going reluctantly. His ballot paper contained an error unnoticed until after nominations closed.

That meant he was ineligible to stand. And that’s a disaster in anyone’s terms.

He’d become one of the wise heads, the well read, the well reasoned and the voice of commonsense.

When the new council is sworn in, if things had played out differently, he’d be the one those new councillors would be looking to for advice.

He could also have been the man destined for higher things.

And if the new council has more new than old faces, Ellis’ loss will be even more strongly felt, but let’s hope he’ll come back next election and toss his hat back in the ring.

o here we are within a bull’s roar of a local body election result.

In two weeks’ time the people who can be bothered, let’s call them the “engaged”, will have spoken.

Nationally, our fervour for local body democracy is a graphic demonstration of abject apathy.

Frequently hovering in the 40s percentage point range, often less and just very occasionally peaking greater. More than half of us can’t be bothered.

Back in 2010 Wanganui and Invercargill just squeaked past 60 per cent voter turnout, but neither they nor any other provincial electorate has managed it since.

So generally it can be said, the majority of eligible voters don’t give a large rodent’s bottom.

Which is a pity, because we live in a country where we are all entitled to a vote and going by the number of comments on almost any Facebook topic you care to name, people do have opinions. About anything. But most can’t quite muster the energy or enthusiasm to fill out a simple voting paper and choose people they think will be great for shaping their district’s future.

Our lives. Our issues. Our own backyard.

I don’t have further figures to back up my hunch but I’m picking there is a considerable vacuum at the mid to lower end of the voter demographic.

Anyway, this year we are being served up a doozy.

Four mayoral candidates, a reduced council table and some fresh blood in the mix. If you are into local body politics, it’s quite a thrill. And who could call it?

Honestly?

The Guardian’s online poll started a few days ago and the way the positions and numbers have bounced around has been quite the rollercoaster.

It would be fair to say that each of the four mayoral candidates possess useful skills, but there are also some interesting questions one could ask. When two previous councillors from the last term are lining up against the encumbent for the top job you have to ask why?

Take all the personalities out of the mix and concentrating on the issues, I’ve been giving a bit of thought about what I want from

a leader.

Consensus and inclusion and consultation are buzz words bandied about all the time in politics these days and they have their place.

But it all seems to sometimes come at the expense of actually producing results in a timely and cost-effective manner.

Working groups. A favourite of the Government. How many bloody working groups does it take to change a lightbulb?

What I want to see in a mayor is a visionary, a leader, a person who comes to the table with a vision and a plan and rolls up their sleeves and gets involved.

Someone in the top job who, for example, when the CBD redevelopment gets under way, is involved with all the stakeholders and is confident that works will proceed in a timely and efficient manner.

How difficult can it be to dig up a road and bury the planned infrastructure and cover it up again without taking forever?

We saw recently on the tele, the incredible rebuild work that has gone on in Japan since their

earthquake.

They seem to have achieved so much on such a huge scale compared to us. Is NZ buried in excessive red tape? Where are our choke points?

I’ve had the impression this term that there is a definite hands off between the elected councillors and the administration side of the operation. When the open spaces look ignored, I want a leader who can and will rattle the cage. Demand results.

So this term, I’m looking for a practical hands-on mayor who has a vision and a managerial demeanour, who works closely with the CEO and other parties to achieve great results.

In this departmentalised, compartmentalised top-heavy world that may not even be possible, but ... that’s what I reckon is needed. Who’s with me?

YOUR VIEW Boulevard Day 2019 A huge thanks to everyone for making this Boulevard Day 43 years young, successful, fun and relaxed.

Of course, the weather did play a part and we were long overdue for a fine, sunny day.

The stallholders were very happy, [with] some selling out before the event finished at 3.30pm, and both existing and new stallholders said they had really enjoyed the atmosphere the day brought

making it a very worthwhile day, and, please put our names down for next year.

We have so many people to thank for adding to the ambience of the day, with a special thanks to the Ashburton Guardian for their app, and a huge thank you to Nelson Building Society who were absolutely fantastic in continuing to allow this event to be a true community event.

By the end of today the Chertsey Oilers could well find find themselves going straight through to the Aoraki rugby league competition final.

But to do that, they’ll need to beat the competition’s form team – the Country Cowboys – in Timaru this afternoon by a big enough margin to ensure that they have a superior points differential, because if they do win, it will bring them even on competition points.

In fact, heading into today’s final round matches of the Duncan McGregor Memorial Cup competition, everyone still has a shot of making the finals.

The top team at the end of today will go straight to the final,

leaving two and three to battle it out in a semi-final for the other spot.

As it stands, the Country Cowboys are top of the table on four points with two wins from two, and while the Oilers are also two from two, they’re two points behind on the board after being docked two points for using an out-of-zone player in round one against the Timaru Outlaws.

That means the Oilers and Outlaws both have two competition points, but the Oilers are well ahead on points difference.

That points difference is also on the side of the Barbarians.

They’re down the bottom of the table without a win, just like the Outlaws, but if they can beat the Outlaws today and join them

on two competition points, they should go through thanks to their superior points difference.

The Outlaws were well beaten in Rakaia last weekend by the Cowboys, and Barbarians coach Steve Gamble knows his team can beat them.

They’re improving week after week, they just need to gel together more as a team.

For the Oilers, this season has been their best so far.

They were only formed three years ago, and their win in round one over the Outlaws was their first win ever.

Chertsey Oilers coach Reuben Browne said his players are deter-

mined to do good for the club and have the right attitude, and that’s shining through on the field, and on the points table.

“We’ve only had about six trainings all up together and we have come a long way in six trainings,” Browne said.

“Imagine if we had training all year and actually put a team into the Christchurch competition, we would actually be a devastating force.

“The atmosphere and the culture in the team ... we are brothers.

“We play as brothers, family, they don’t let each other down and that’s the way we play.”

Last week, the Oilers never really looked troubled on their way to picking up their first ever win over the Barbarians, and their celebrations after the final whistle illustrated just how big a deal it was to them.

But Browne knows that if they’re to hand the Cowboys their first defeat of the season in Timaru today, they’ll need to freshen things up a bit.

Today’s games will see the Temuka-based Cowboys play the Oilers at 1pm at Ashbury Park, and Timaru’s Outlaws play the Barbarians at 2.30pm, with kids’ grades kick-starting the day from 10.30am.

High tackles take centre stage

O

ne-sided games at the Rugby World Cup that only sadists and masochists could love are a reminder that rugby in the last 50 years has managed to bring just two new teams, Italy and Argentina, into the big league of five northern and three southern hemisphere sides, and the Pumas and Italy still often look like rookies.

So bravo to Uruguay for beating what seemed a casual, over-confident Fijian side, 30-27, but it was still the length of Route 66 away from an upset on the scale of the Japanese victory over South Africa at the last Cup. With centre stage providing little substance, there was plenty of time to pay attention to sideshow alley, and there was a lot to see there.

Let’s start with high tackling.

The fact is the philosophy of defensive work has changed.

In the misty dream-time of amateur test rugby, coaches only applauded tackles that saw the tackler’s head behind the knees of his opponent, the shoulder driving into the legs, and the runner with the ball hitting the ground.

High tackles were a rarity, and generally frowned on.

But as All Black flanker Sam Cane, a man with impeccable, legal, tackling technique, explained to me last year, “what we want to do is ... if I’m making a side on tackle on you, you’re going to get to the gain line. But I can be frontal, and stop you where I hit you, or push you back, that’s ideal.

“Then, if two of us are trying to tackle you the idea is that one will go low, and the other one will go high.

“If I make a good chop (low) tackle on you, that allows my mate to drive you back from the top, or get on the ball.”

So for part of Wallaby wing Reece Hodge’s defence against his dangerous tackle charge to be that, basically, he didn’t know the rules around high tackles, was at best naive, at worst stunningly

disingenuous.

This is someone who trains for and plays rugby for a living. The judiciary reported, in a weirdly punctuated statement, that “the player conceded that he had no effective knowledge of World Rugby’s ‘Decision making framework for high tackles’; had not been trained on it; (and) was across it because the tackles he makes are predominantly in the waist to knees area (to the Panel this was of some general concern…)”.

The red cards and bans will continue to flow if more players are as genuinely clueless as we’re expected to believe Hodge is.

Which also brings us to the second fairground attraction at the Cup, refereeing.

You’d expect World Rugby to bag their own referees at about the same time an Oscar winner says, “I’m not going to cry and thank the director, the producer, my agent, my acting coach, the cast, the crew, my yoga instructor, my family, my therapist, my vegan dietician, the trainer of my support llama, and God, because actually I’m just a pretty face who parrots lines someone else writes for me”.

But World Rugby did, in effect, eat their own young, criticising the referees they had hand-picked themselves.

Sadly though it seemed the refs were being specifically reproached for what is one of the greatest blights on the game, the offside line at breakdowns.

Yes, it’s forever a worry that, especially in the wake of the Reece citing, a crucial player could be lost in a tight game because a referee wants to please his masters.

However, for the sake of a team that wants to win by using their backline (read, the All Blacks), allowing defensive lines to creep further and further forward as a match wears on is not only outside the letter of the law, but spits on the spirit of it too.

I’d put up with a spate of early offside penalties for the sake of daylight starting to appear between the two teams when the ball is cleared.

Sam Cane has an impeccable tackling technique.

It’s a little disconcerting that the statement by World Rugby after the first round of games was couched in terms only a grey suited, red tape loving, civil service geek could love. “There have been initial challenges with the use of technology and communication and team communication, which have impacted decision-making,” was how World Rugby phrased it.

But the head of referees at the Cup, Alain Rolland, despite his French sounding name, is Irish, so let’s devoutly hope he addresses the refs in private in blunter terms.

“For God’s sake get them all on bloody side,” would be a great start.

On a happier note, the Yin and Yang commentary team of Scotty Stevenson and Stephen Donald has been excellent.

They’re operating in a field where almost every viewer is a self appointed expert.

In the days when Keith Quinn was the king of the callers I could guarantee that if I asked for questions at a rugby club, the first or second would be along the lines of “what do you think of Keith Quinn”?

I’d ask what the questioner thought of him. The replies were usually too scatological to repeat now in a family newspaper.

Quinn was actually very, very good, but I discovered that to

some rugby fans, if he made one remark in a season that offended them, that was enough to condemn him forever.

Stevenson is an exuberant commentator, which is fine, but if Donald was as lively there’s a chance listening to them would be more exhausting then informative. But 2011 World Cup hero Donald stays as cool in the commentary box as he did at Eden Park when he kicked the winning goal against France.

Laconic to the bone, Donald also has the ability to distil his analysis to a few well chosen sentences.

He presents as the sort of likeable, low key, well-informed guy you’d enjoy sitting next to a footy game. I can’t think of a better skill set for a comments man.

Meanwhile, down at the candy floss end of the show there’s been the traditional bleating about the haka, this time from an Irish writer.

He used the template we’ve heard for more than a decade, ever since the All Blacks stopped their awful Ngati Pakeha version, and, from 1987, driven by Buck Shelford, started to put heart and discipline into the challenge.

Comment on the piece doesn’t deserve more than a paragraph, so I’ll say no more.

Footnote: During the week, Simon Barnett and I talked to Josh Kronfeld, and looked back on the 1995 World Cup when Jonah Lomu exploded onto the world stage. Kronfeld summed up what it was like playing as an openside flanker, running lines to back up Lomu on the wing.

“The great thing about Jonah,” he said, “was that I had an idea where he was going to go, and that was usually straight through the guy he was up against.

“The great thing about Jonah was that we all knew about his size and strength, but he also had the ability to do a small man’s game, and with his speed and stepping, it makes for an awesome package. He was the easiest of all the great outside backs I played with to track and follow.”

Tough questions have been asked in the Mid Canterbury rugby camp this week ahead of their Heartland Championship match against Thames Valley in Ashburton today.

That’s because five rounds in, Mid Canterbury have won just one game and now face a pretty tough battle if they’re to make either the Meads Cup (top four) or Lochore Cup (fifth to eighth) finals.

It’s something that the side’s coach Dale Palmer is acutely aware of heading into today’s game against the defending Meads Cup champions, but he also knows that there’s plenty of water to go under the bridge yet.

They may be second to last on the table with three games left to play, and East Coast the only team below them, but they’re also only eight points off the top of the table in a season where every team has been beaten at least once so far.

Anything can happen from here on in, but Palmer and his crew know that if they’re to be there for the business end of the season, they need to make their move now.

“If we can collect five points from each game we’re still in the hunt.

“We have seen glimpses of what we can do and our real goal at the moment is to put that all together and play for each other and get the result,” Palmer said.

So Palmer is calling on his players to wear the jersey with pride and to do it for themselves, their team-mates, their fans and the players who have come before them.

“Instead of talking about it, we want to actually put it out on the field,” Palmer said.

“It’s a tough road and it’s been pretty tough on us all, but we know the team is pretty good and we are only eight points from the leaders.”

With a few players unavailable this week, Palmer and co-coach Jason Rickard have made a number of changes to the team that

Hamish Mackenzie returns from injury and comes into the fold for the first time this season and he’ll get his first start at seven, joining his brother Will Mackenzie at halfback.

Last season’s leading try-scorer for the Hammers, Brian Matoramusha, also gets his first start of the season, while Seta Koroitamana moves from the forwards to fill a space in the backline.

He’ll start today’s match at centre, while Richard Catherwood will start at first-five after loan player Corey McKay sprained his ankle in Gisborne last weekend, with second-five Tyler Blackburn taking over the goal-kicking duties.

Both of last week’s starting wingers, Manasa Bari and Timoci Nabakeke, have moved to the bench, with Lima Savaiinaea – who started from the bench last week – joining Matoramusha as the side’s other winger.

In the forwards, Rakaia’s Kody Nordqvist comes onto the bench to provide locking cover, while Tevita Ula also moves to the bench, with Tom Blyth set to wear the number six jersey Ula started in last week.

Palmer said Mid Canterbury need to be wary of Thames Valley out wide today, because they can attack from most places on the field. But so can a number of the players named in today’s Mid Canterbury side.

All season they’ve shown they’ve got the team capable of getting the job done.

“They’ve led a few teams at half time, only to be behind at the final whistle.

“I would like to think they will come out of the sheds as a team and that they will come out of the sheds at half time and do the same.”

Palmer said they’re now at the point of the season where, while they still have a lot to lose, they also have a lot to gain.

“We are under no illusions, it’s a big uphill battle,” Palmer said.

“We just want the boys to play for the full 80 minutes with the pride and determination that the jersey deserves.”

HISTORY The latest chapter in the sporting history between Mid Canterbury and Thames Valley will be written at the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds today.

The game will kick off at 2.30pm, with the curtain raiser – Mid Canterbury Under-18 v Canterbury Metro – set to kick off at 1pm.

The return of club sevens

Methven is getting ready to play host to some of the country’s best young rugby talents.

The Methven Domain is the venue for this year’s South Island Under-18 Girls’ Rugby Tournament, and it’s set to be a huge three days of full-on action, starting tomorrow.

Among the teams eyeing up the title is a young Aoraki team, playing under the Hanan Shield banner, which features a few players with local ties.

Two players from the Ashburton College/ Mount Hutt College combined girls’ team, Aidan Elvines and Madison Trusler-Clark, are in the side, along with two Mayfield girls who attend Craighead in Timaru, Olivia Mackenzie and Nikita Clemens.

The Aoraki side only won one game at last year’s tournament in Tai Tapu, against Canterbury B, but the year before that they finished runners-up.

This year they’re set to take on Otago in round one, which gets under way at 10.30am tomorrow morning, and in round two – at 1.30pm tomorrow – they’ll take on Canterbury Development.

On day two they’ll start off against Southland, before taking on Tasman in the afternoon, and on Tuesday’s final day they’ll take on the traditionally tough Canterbury girls at 9.30am, with the top two teams then set to square off in the final at midday.

Club sevens is officially set to make a comeback to Mid Canterbury next month.

The Mid Canterbury Rugby Union put the feelers out a few weeks ago, to see if there’d be enough interest to get a sevens tournament up and running, and the response had been good.

So on October 12, it’s all go. It’s the same day that Mid Canterbury play Wairarapa Bush in Ashburton, in the final round of the Heartland Championship, so Mid Canterbury Rugby Union rugby development officer Jason Ree said the sevens will be played in the morning.

It’s hoped the final could then be the curtain-raiser to the Heartland game.

While numbers haven’t yet to be confirmed, teams that have confirmed they’ll be taking part are Southern Colts, Methven, Hampstead, Celtic, Rakaia and Mt Somers, who held their first training on Wednesday night as Mid Canterbury was hit by a spring snow flurry.

It’s hoped that the tournament might uncover a few sevens superstars that could represent Mid Canterbury at this year’s national qualifying tournament in Timaru in December.

When the feelers were first put out about the club sevens, it was hoped it might generate a bit of interest in women’s sevens too. And it had, with a women’s team set to take part in Canterbury Rugby’s Spring Sevens tournament.

Canterbury head into the tournament as the defending champions, and one of the key players in that side is actually a Mid Canterbury girl – Jaidyn Busch.

Busch, who is also a top shot putter, comes from Hinds but attends Christchurch Girls’ High School and she played number eight in last year’s tournament, with her performances earning her a spot in the tournament team.

Players ready for rep action

It may officially be the school holidays now, but there will be no rest over the next couple of weeks for Mid Canterbury’s top young hockey players.

For them, the October school holidays are the peak of the representative season, and the first team set to hit the turf will be the Mid Canterbury under-15 girls.

They’re off to Nelson for one of four national under-15 tournaments taking place around the country, which will run from Monday through until Saturday.

Next week it’s the turn of the rest of the teams – Mid Canterbury’s under-13 A and B teams, with the A teams off to the national Collier Trophy (girls) and Hatch Cup (boys) tournaments, and the Bs off to the Festival of Hockey in Oamaru.

Mid Canterbury has both a boys’ and a girls’ team off to Oamaru, and the boys will play from Friday through until Sunday, with the girls on the turf from Monday to Wednesday.

For the A sides, the girls are off to Wellington for the Collier Trophy and the boys are off to Palmerston North for the Hatch Cup.

To be considered for the role you must meet the following criteria: • Experience in transporting loads with HPMVs up to 60 Tonne.

• Experience with road ranger is essential.

• A strong geographical knowledge of the Mid Canterbury and Canterbury areas.

• A top-quality professional operator who offers two or more years’ experience driving (class 5).

Treasured Poppa to Jackson and Amelia; Ethan; and Cameron and Aspen.

Beloved son of the late Maurice and Sadie Clelland, and loved brother of Dianne and Zelda. Service to be held at Gardens of the World, 95 Clover Road East, Hope, on TUESDAY, October 1, 2019, at 1.00pm.
