The poisoning of a 20-month-old girl in a Dorie dairy shed highlights the need to keep a close eye on children on farms, says Federated Farmers health and safety spokeswoman Katie Milne.

On Monday a Mid Canterbury toddler was airlifted to hospital with minor injuries after putting a powdered cleaning substance in her mouth.

chief officer Tyrone Burrowes said the girl was transported to Christchurch Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter around lunchtime on Monday.

She received minor chemical burns around her mouth and was taken to hospital as a precaution, he said.

Ms Milne said the safety of children came down to parental responsibility, but the incident served as a reminder to be hyper-vigilant.

“We know that when you are cleaning

up in the cowshed there are lots of bits and pieces that are not conducive to good health if swallowed, so it’s certainly an area where you want to keep an eye on the kids and most farmers have a side room or somewhere else where they put them,” she said.

They say they’ll never see peace and privacy because of the movie, about paranormal investigators helping a family that just moved into a secluded farmhouse. New Zealanders won’t mind footing the bill for the Prime Minister and some ministers to be in London during the Rugby World Cup final, Deputy Prime Minister Bill English says.

Whatever the result early on Sunday morning, certain New Zealand politicians will be watching from Twickenham’s stands.

Prime Minister John Key will be in attendance, as will Sports Minister Jonathan Coleman, who also attended the closelyfought win over South Africa. Focus on huts’ water issues

South Rakaia hut holders will have to fork out $65,000 to upgrade the settlement’s water supply.

Ashburton Water Zone Committee member Jackie Wright, who owns property in the seaside settlement, told a joint meeting of the Ashburton and SelwynWaihora zones that regulations coming into place in 2016 had forced their hand.

This was despite the well returning clean test results for 14 years.

Ms Wright said the community favoured installing a microfiltration system backup by ultraviolet water treatment over chlorination.

“Our water comes from a shallow bore less than 10 metres deep,” she said.

Generally speaking the deeper the well the less chance of contamination, however Dunsandel’s water supply comes from a 60 metre bore and it was contaminated by an unsecured bore head upstream.

“We are being asked to pay up to mitigate somebody else’s activity under the Land and Water Regional Plan,” Ms Wright said.

The group also looked at a planting project sponsored by the Ashburton Zone Committee’s biodiversity fund, with South Rakaia Hut Holders Association president Noel Muckle acting as tour guide.

An investigation into the death of a woman on a Southland road early yesterday has broadened.

The woman, a 37-year-old Australian national, was walking on State Highway 1, about 10km from Bluff, when she was hit and killed by a car, just before 1am.

The death, one of two on southern roads over Labour weekend, was being treated as a homicide, police said. A number of vehicles and other places of interest are being examined as part of the investigation. Anyone who travelled between Invercargill and Bluff between 9pm on Sunday and 12.50am yesterday was asked to contact police.

The “silent majority” of New Zealanders are far from enthused when it comes to the All Blacks and the Rugby World Cup, a new survey has found. Sport sociologist Toni Bruce, an associate professor at Auckland University’s Faculty of Education and Social Work, is currently conducting a survey gauging Kiwi experiences and attitudes of the 2015 Rugby World Cup. Dr Bruce, a rugby fan herself, did similar surveys in 2007 and 2011. Ashburton’s St John ambulance travelled 2687 kilometres last week on 75 calls. Twenty-nine of those calls were to urgent incidents. here were also 64 medical events and 11 accidents during the week.

The bodies of two missing fishermen have been recovered from the FV Jubilee wreck off the coast of Christchurch.

Sergeant Phil Simmonds said formal identification was yet to be completed but the bodies were believed to be fishermen from the vessel. The bodies were recovered by the navy’s diving squad on Monday. “Formal identification has yet to be completed but police believe that they are those of two of the crewmen understood to have been on board at the time the FV Jubilee sank.”

Coastal wells still low, despite rain

The rain gave little respite to the Mid Canterbury district as groundwater wells remained low in coastal areas while lower river flows have led to early restrictions on one irrigation scheme.

Just 7mm of rain fell between 6am and mid-afternoon at Ashburton yesterday – and farmers hoping for more downpours this week may be disappointed, ac-

cording to a leading forecaster.

MetService meteorologist Stephen Glassey said there would be brief showers today and on Thursday but they were expected to be less than yesterday’s fall.

“As you get closer to the foothills there will be slightly more rain.”

Mr Glassey said October had been drier than normal across the eastern parts of both islands with the El Nino weather pattern

suggesting that will continue.

Barrhill Chertsey Irrigation Ltd general manager John Wright said the scheme was on restrictions due to Rakaia River flows but most farmers were taking advantage of their stored water.

Mr Wright said restrictions had begun a “little earlier than normal” with water usage from the scheme already higher for October than in previous years.

However it was business as

usual, he said with the scheme able to offer water from Lake Coleridge should stored supplies get low.

Mayfield Hinds Irrigation Ltd general manager Hamish Tait said it had been a “very dry” start to the year causing the scheme to run at full capacity.

“That’s earlier than normal.”

Mr Tait said there had been good flows from the river so far and their storage ponds were full

despite the fact there hadn’t been any significant rainfall.

“Things are ticking along quite nicely.”

Ecan has recently restricted 15 wells on the north side of the Rakaia River while groundwater wells in coastal Mid Canterbury are at record lows.

NIWA has predicted the current El Nino pattern was on track to be the second most intense since 1950.

Leonie keeps up show baking family tradition

When it comes to show exhibitors, they don’t get much more dedicated than Leonie Rollinson and her three children.

Two days out from this year’s Ashburton A&P Show and Mrs Rollinson is up to her ears in flour, cooking up a storm as she ticks off another on her list of 24 items that need to be completed and ready for judging on Friday morning.

Some people might think she’s mad, but Mrs Rollinson loves baking and believes it’s up to families like hers to ensure the A&P tradition continues from generation to generation. This year Ashburton celebrates its 138th show, and she’s determined those numbers will continue to mount up.

“I enter the show every year but I’ve never had so many entries as I have this year. I just kept ticking the boxes and it kind of got out of hand,” she said.

Baking is a family tradition and while she may not be sticking slavishly to her mother and grandmother’s recipes, Mrs Rollinson said the basics and the love of baking are inter-generational in her family.

Inevitably, preparing show baking is a last minute effort, although there’s the odd item that doesn’t mind a short stay in the freezer, she said.

“I did start a couple of things yesterday but they didn’t go to plan so the kids are happy, they’re in their lunch boxes today,” she said.

And with school athletics scheduled for Thursday, Mrs Rollinson knows she’ll be putting in some long hours in the kitchen that night.

While it would be great to win the overall trophy, she knows there is always tough competition for show bench honours.

“There’s one lady who always wins and she’s been doing it for years. She’s exceptional.”

Baking for the show bench is all about appearance rather than taste. For a cook who describes her baking as ‘rustic’, Mrs Rollinson said that poses a few problems.

“I try to refine my baking but when I get there I look at other baking and see how tidy it is. However, when the shearers, the agents, my husband and kids like what I do, it must be alright.”

With 20 years of competition under her belt, Mrs Rollinson says she’s still a baby among the home industries competitors. Her children, Emma, 12, Will, nine and Austin eight, all have five or six entries in the show, ensuring the Rollinson name will continue to be tied to the show.

When the judging is done and the awards are handed out, there’s nothing left to do but clear your entries from the show bench, pack them and take them home. And in the Rollinson house that’s pay day for the family’s hens, making it the ultimate exercise in recycling – stale baking in, fresh eggs for more baking, out.

In an effort to introduce new arrivals to the district, the Newcomers Network has put together informative starter packs.

Co-ordinator Louise Glennon said it was the first time welcome packs had been used, and previously newcomers were given an information pamphlet.

The free packs were intended to make it easier for people to get to know the district and included information on the council, legal help, schools, health practitioners, property and finance as well as a detailed map.

“I have tried to cover most things off but the packs can certainly change and be updated,”

Mrs Glennon said.

People who receive a pack can also easily sign up to the Newcomers Network which already has around 200 members.

“It’s about getting people to get in touch,” Mrs Glennon said.

The packs will this week be distributed to schools and over the coming weeks will be sent out to businesses as well as locals living in rural areas.

They can also be obtained from the Newcomers Networks in the Safer Ashburton office on Tancred Street or from Safer Ashburton’s stall at this weekend’s Ashburton A&P Show.

Tree climbing death

Large trees outside the Methven Cemetery on Methven Chertsey Road are creating a winter ice hazard, residents say, and they’re asking the Ashburton District Council to have them removed.

Mr Harmer believes he’s offered the council a good deal – a work team to do the job with their payment coming in firewood.

“This is not just about road safety, it’s about everyone playing by the same rules,” he said.

The council’s parks teams believes there’s a better way to solve the problem, said council service delivery group manager Neil McCann.

“We’ve visited the site and

we’ve checked it out.

“The proposal was that we removed the large trees but we believe if we remove a lot of the smaller trees in between it will open it up and let more light through. It’s nothing different to what we’re doing elsewhere,” he said.

Mr McCann agreed there had been some diverse opinions on the solution, but said he understood the neighbours’ concerns.

Removing very large trees was an expensive exercise and the council believed it could achieve the goal letting sunlight through onto the road by removing the dense undergrowth, he said.

Work on clearing smaller trees along the Methven Chertsey Road began last week, but Mr Harmer believes this will do nothing to address the road shading problem created by the larger trees.

New library, teacher resource room on way

Methven man John Harmer believes the Ashburton District Council is playing by dual rules when it comes to trees shading roads and creating winter ice hazards.

The council has a policy that clearly spells out rules around trees shading roads. If they prevent ice thawing and create a safety hazard, then those trees must be either removed or trimmed, and it is about to up its enforcement of that policy before winter 2016.

But Mr Harmer said, the council has a hazard of its own it appears reluctant to deal with, very large conifers growing on the boundary of the Methven Cemetery.

The Methven Community Board wants the trees removed, residents want the trees removed and the proof that they’re a hazard comes in the number of accidents on that stretch of road every winter, Mr Harmer said.

He’s talked to the council about the problem, but said there appears to be a division within the council over whether the trees should stay or go.

“We have a situation here where we can’t seem to get anything done. I’ve even offered to do the job for free. The rugby club took some of their trees down four or five years ago. They left a few individual trees and it looks great now. Let’s do the same thing here,” he said.

about 20 years ago.

Because modern technology was taking up more space in classrooms, they wanted to return these large rooms back to their former use, she said.

“It will be great having the big classrooms.”

The new library would also have a “lovely” grassed outdoor space where children could sit

and read, Mrs Jemmett said.

Work would be starting on the construction soon and they hoped the new building would be completed early next year, Mrs Jemmett said.

“We’re looking forward to it.”

At the end of this term, they were also planning to start fullyfencing the school for the safety of special needs students.

Pupils at a top Wellington secondary school were told yesterday of the tragic death of a popular classmate who fell when climbing a tree. Rohan Watts, 15, died on Sunday after a fall at a mate’s property in Makara, to the west of Wellington city. The year 11 Wellington College pupil was about to sit his NCEA exams.

He was involved in music at the school, was in the air training corp and did orienteering.

Southern quake South Island tourist hotspots were jolted by an earthquake yesterday.

A tremor measuring 4.3 on the richter scale struck 30 kilometres north-west of Wanaka at 11.14am.

GeoNet reported it as a “strong” shake at a shallow depth of 3km and more than 180 people “felt it”, according the website. Originally it was classed as a “moderate” quake at a 15km depth.

Parole for deportees The Government has confirmed plans to urgently pass laws which will allow it to impose parolelike conditions on ex-criminals deported from overseas. But it admits 167 people who have already been deported from Australia do not currently face any supervision conditions unless they are considered at a very high risk of reoffending. Around 1000 expats are expected to be sent back to New Zealand under a controversial rule change by the Australian Government. New flag shows Belgian heart

Belgium is often the forgotten country when people talk about the New Zealand soldiers who died during World War One, says Passchendaele Society of New Zealand president Gavin Marriott.

The society, however, is determined to raise public awareness of Belgium’s role in the war and is ensuring Returned Services Associations around New Zealand have a Belgian flag they can fly when commemorating the Battle of Passchendaele on October 12.

“Belgium is where most of the New Zealand soldiers lie, not Gallipoli, but Belgium in Flanders gets forgotten. A lot of education needs to be done,” Mr Marriott said. Swapping a can of food for a movie ticket might sound too good to be true, but right now it’s a reality.

The Annual Wattie’s Cans Film Festival is a time for movie lovers to take in the latest films, while simultaneously stocking up the Salvation Army foodbank by swapping a can of non-perishable food for a movie ticket.

Wattie’s then matches all donations made across New Zealand, can for can.

The Regent Cinema has taken part in the festival for the past few years and is set to do so again this year.

Owner David Favel said “a couple of hundred cans” were donated last year.

However, this year Mr Favel is encouraging people to donate “at least” one can per ticket, to aid the local foodbank.

The festival runs until November 2.

Parents gutted fire convictions overturned Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully says it is “very disappointing” the convictions of five people responsible the Qatar mall fire that killed 2-year-old Kiwi triplets have been thrown out.

He says the Government has raised the case with its Qatari counterparts, while the parents of the triplets say the pain they are feeling is “indescribable”.

Nineteen people – including blonde-haired triplets Lillie, Jackson and Wilsher Weekes from New Zealand – died as a fire ripped through the Gympanzee childcare centre in a Doha mall in 2012.

A Qatari judge has now thrown out the convictions of four people convicted of involuntary manslaughter and a public servant charged with forgery in relation to the blaze.

“The verdict which has been handed down overturning all convictions in relation to the Villagio Mall fire is very disappointing,” Mr McCully said.

“The New Zealand Government understands the upset that families will be feeling and it is concerning that no one, so far, has been held to account for these tragic events.”

Mr McCully said it was understood avenues of appeal were available and a civil case was underway. Officials at the NZ embassy in Abu Dhabi were making urgent inquiries about the next steps in the legal process, he said.

Martin and Jane Weekes, parents of the triplets, said the judge’s decision was “devastating” news.

“The pain for all of the families is indescribable. We remember the 19 innocent lives lost, including 13 beautiful children.

We are grieving for our beautiful children. And we are angry. Not one person has taken responsibility for this crime. The charge has been reduced to corporate manslaughter. This is a travesty of justice,” Mr Weekes said.

He said the decision shows how far Qatar needed to improve to become a forward-looking member of the international community.

Chase linked to shooting A man shot by police at a road block near Hastings on Sunday night had shot at police during a chase a short while earlier.

The chase was linked to the death of a woman whose body was found at a rented unit off The Esplanade at Westshore, north of Napier.

The man, 28, was in a serious but stable condition in Hawke’s Bay Hospital.

At a short mid-afternoon media conference in Hastings, police Eastern District commander Superintendent Sandra Venables would not reveal the injuries, although an earlier media release said the man was shot by police.

While declining to reveal the relationship

between the man and the woman, Ms Venables said no one else was being sought in relation to the death.

Police were, however, seeking any information which could be linked, including the man’s movements before events came to an end on State Highway 2 at Clive.

She would not reveal whether any suspect weapon had been found by police, and declined to answer several other questions, saying it was a “very early” stage of three inquiries into the events – a police criminal investigation, a internal policy practice and procedures investigation, and inquiries by the Independent Police Conduct Authority.

New library, museum one step closer

Methven library and museum committee members are looking forward to seeing construction of the $522,000 structure begin after obtaining building consent.

Granting of the consent has been the latest step in establishing the new facility, since demolition of the former earthquakedamaged library and museum buildings located on separate sites in 2013.

It has come after the Ashburton District Council made several requests for more detailed specifications.

“We are very pleased that our resource consent and building consent have come through and we are now just teeing things up,” said Methven Public Library chairwoman Zella McGirr yesterday.

As the building site, where the former historic library building was located, was a heritage site, any earthworks could not be un-

dertaken without archaeological input, and once this was in place “it will be all go”, Mrs McGirr said.

More than half the project cost, which would only be a little more than the value of the construction, had already been raised. Applications to trusts and community funders would be made in coming weeks and months.

Additionally, the committees would appreciate the support of community organisations or individuals who would like to contribute.

The interior of the new building would incorporate some elements of the old library, which was a small-scale Italianate building with plastered ornamentation, constructed in 1883-84.

“We will be using anything we can that we have kept from the original building,” Mrs McGirr said.

The Methven Lions Club have loaned fencing and a portaloo for the site, erected earlier this month.

Kiwis are being urged to take a long look at how much meat they are eating – but not to cut it out completely – after a new report on its health risks.

Processed meats such as bacon, ham and cured sausages have been ranked in the same category as cigarettes and asbestos as a cause of cancer in a World Health Organisation report.

The report said every 50g of processed meat eaten a day – the equivalent of two slices of bacon or one cured sausage – increased the chance of developing bowel cancer by 18 per cent.

Fresh red meat such as lamb, beef and pork was ranked on the next level, as a “probable” carcinogen, which meant there was “limited evidence” it causes cancer.

New Zealand is ranked seventh worldwide for meat consumption per capita – but health experts say it is all about keeping it in moderation.

Kiwis eat an average of 22g of processed meat a day, just over half the danger level for cancer risks to kick in.

Healthy Food Guide nutritionist Claire Turnbull said eating red meat was fine in moderation.

“There’s nothing wrong with having red meat, it’s just if you’re having it for every single meal.

“There’s those people that eat the odd bit of bacon with their eggs benedict and then there’s people who their staple meat is luncheon and corned beef. They need to go: ‘Right, this is a good time for me to change my habits around this’.”

Saegusa: ‘Eventually the artwork takes over ...’

Ashburton Art Gallery exhibitions inspired Natalia Saegusa from a young age, the artist said at a powerpoint presentation last week.

About 10 people turned up for Powerpoints and Pizza at the gallery. Ms Saegusa shared her life as an artist while attendees enjoyed hot pizzas with refreshments.

Ms Saegusa grew up in Ashburton and is today based in Christchurch. Her largest work ever, “another here”, featured at the gallery’s exhibition Stealing Lines.

She said her influences included works she saw at an early age at the gallery. When she was in high school the gallery’s curator, Kathryn Mitchell, had provided

a stimulating programme. She recalled a site specific installation by Mark Braunias, as well as a provocative work by Michael Armstrong.

“That’s one of the fantastic things about art, it has the potential to look at things in different ways. In a small town you really are aware of art’s ability to do this – the way it can present something to you and not necessarily taking it at face value.”

Ms Saegusa undertook a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Christchurch’s Design and Arts College of New Zealand, which was located in the city centre until the February 2011 earthquake. The quake “brought wild back to a very dense urban environment”, and made her aware of everything around her being disrupted. She

The design also comprises a snowflake, playing with the water theme further and creating shadows and dappled light. It was among innovative lighting product designs on display at the college’s Mini Breakout 2015 at the Methven Heritage Centre earlier this month.

Teacher Tessa Watson said she was proud of how much work her students had done for the event, which saw family, friends and community members view the creations, displayed alongside an evening of musical performance.

became sensitive to places, space and her artistic direction turned to becoming more, so responding to materials and being aware of how they responded to the environment they were situated in.

She exhibited at galleries in the city throughout her time at the college, and she and her fellow students transformed an empty retail space at Colombo Mall into an end-of-year exhibition gallery space.

At the end of her fourth year she was offered studio space at another city-centre gallery and it had been fantastic to finally have a place for her practice to grow, she said. She enjoyed operating alongside other artists here, recognising that art was a social activity to be conducted in a supportive environment.

Her work this year of “another here” at the Ashburton Art Gallery was painted over 10 days, and was her biggest ever. It followed on from her A4 paper series which was colourful drawings involving straight and wavy lines using highlighter markers.

To create “another here” she had made a series of new drawings with highlighter pens and cut them up, exploring the notion of how disparate objects are put together and how they function together. She painted her finalised design on to the wall, the medium having provided its own energy.

“You are pushing it along but eventually the artwork takes over and you are just responding”.

She said she had been “really happy” with the outcome.

Hunt on for survivors

Malaysia ‘police state’ Malaysia has increasingly resembles a “police state” as the government uses repressive laws to silence critics, Human Rights Watch says.

The US-based group said in a report that despite earlier promises by the longtime government to end abuses, Prime Minister Najib Razak was accelerating a crackdown that began after a poor showing in the 2013 election. “Malaysia is starting to resemble a police state.

People who are engaging in open and honest criticism end up charged for a crime,” said the rights organisation’s Asia director Brad Adams yesterday.

A US warship has sailed close to artificial islands Beijing is building in the South China Sea in a move likely to infuriate the rising Asian power. The USS Lassen passed within 12 nautical miles of at least one of the land formations Beijing claims in the disputed Spratly Islands yesterday, a US defence official says.

Under international law, a state’s territorial waters extend 12 nautical miles from its shore. However, the US argues that this rule cannot apply to artificial islands.

deen in the affected areas to lend their complete help to the victims and facilitate those giving charity to the needy.”

“Initial reports show a big loss of life and huge financial losses in Badakhshan, Takhar, Nangarhar, Kunar and other regions,” said Afghanistan’s chief executive Abdullah Abdullah.

“Exact numbers are not known because phone lines are down and communication has been cut off in many areas.”

Search called off after boat capsizes Five Britons have died and a sixth person, believed to be Australian, is missing and feared dead after a whale-watching boat carrying 27 people capsized near Vancouver Island off Canada’s Pacific coast.

The search and rescue operation was called off yesterday after 21 survivors were plucked from the water, Lieutenant Commander Desmond James of he Coast Guard’s rescue centre in the provincial capital Victoria told AFP. A Royal Canadian Mounted Police dive team later took over, scouring the ocean bed and the rugged coastline nearby for any sign of the missing sixth person, who has yet to be identified.

AAP has been told by the family of a Sydney man, 27, that he was on the boat with his girlfriend and her family when it went down.

Her father was one of five British citizens confirmed dead.

Rescuers picking their way through rugged terrain and pockets of Taliban insurgency in the search for survivors after a massive quake hit Pakistan and Afghanistan, killing at least 277 people.

The toll is expected to rise as search teams reach remote areas that were cut off by the powerful 7.5 magnitude quake, which triggered landslides and stampedes as it toppled buildings and severed communication lines.

Residents including children and the elderly were helping with relief work, many of them digging beneath the rubble for survivors.

Pakistan’s military has been mobilised and has sent medical teams, tents and rations to affected areas, while India said it stood ready to help.

In the most horrifying episode to emerge so far from Monday’s quake, 12 young Afghan girls were crushed to death in a stampede as they tried to flee their shaking school building.

The bulk of the casualties were reported from Pakistan, where 214 people were killed and more than 1800 injured, disaster management authorities said.

“Many houses and buildings have collapsed in the city,” said Arbab Muhammad Asim, district mayor for the northwestern city of Peshawar, yesterday.

“We still remain hopeful, but we have to assume the worst,” said RCMP Corporal Janelle Shoihet.

Federal Transportation Safety Board (TSB) investigators, meanwhile, secured the site of the wreckage.

In London, Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said the four men and a woman who perished in the capsize were all British citizens.

“My thoughts are with the family and friends of all those affected by this terrible accident,” Hammond said in a statement.

Two of the victims were Canadian residents while the other three were tourists, said the British Columbia coroner’s office.

They were aged 18 to 76.

The Leviathan II went down some 12 kilometres off Tofino, a resort town on the western edge of Vancouver Island.

Owned by Jamie’s Whaling Station and Adventure Centres, the 20-metre cruise vessel was reportedly out on one of its last

tours of the season, which ends October 31.

“This particular boat has done this exact same trip for 20 years twice a day.

“Yesterday was no different than any other day,” said tour company owner Jamie Bray.

But for reasons yet unknown, the ship capsized in waters less than seven metres deep, its bow remaining visible above water.

Locals told Canadian media the vessel may have hit rocks.

“It’s much too early to say what the causes of this accident might be,” said TSB Director of Marine Investigations Marc Andre Poisson.

A company spokeswoman said that the incident happened “so quickly” that the crew was unable to send out a distress signal.

Once in the water, the crew set off flares that attracted the attention of local aboriginal fishermen nearby.

Eighteen people were hospitalised, several suffering from hypothermia, media said.

“The response here has been nothing short of phenomenal, the way that people are bringing out blankets and clothing and food, donating what they can and offering all of the services that they have,” Tofino Mayor Josie Osborne told broadcaster CTV. “Tofino’s thoughts and prayers are with passengers, crew, emergency responders and their families. Thank you all for your messages of support,” she wrote on Twitter.

A “shocked and saddened” prime minister-elect Justin Trudeau offered his thoughts and prayers to passengers, the crew and families of the sinking’s victims.

Jamie’s Whaling Station, one of the area’s largest tourist boat outfitters, was hit by a deadly tragedy once before, in 1998.

According to TSB records, two of the four people aboard a whale-watching ship, Ocean Thunder, died after a “large swell wave struck the boat from the port side.”

Too hot for humans If carbon dioxide emissions continue at their current pace, by the end of century parts of the Persian Gulf will sometimes be just too hot for the human body to tolerate, a new study says.

How hot? The heat index - which combines heat and humidity may hit 165 to 170 degrees (74 to 77 Celsius) for at least six hours, according to numerous computer simulations in the new study. That’s so hot that the human body can’t get rid of heat. The elderly and ill are hurt most by current heat waves, but the future is expected to be so hot that healthy, fit people would be endangered, health experts say.

Fan kills zombie friend A US man who had been watching the hit TV series The Walking Dead killed a friend because he thought the man was “turning into a zombie,” police say. Damon Perry, 23, of Prewitt, New Mexico, allegedly used kitchen knives, an electric guitar and a microwave to kill the victim. He then went after other tenants in his apartment complex in the small town of Grants, who managed to call police. “I have never seen or heard anything like this,” Grants Police Department Detective Moses Marquez told AFP. “The scene was pretty gruesome and his confession was just bizarre,” he added. “He attributes this murder to him drinking way too much and binge watching ‘The Walking Dead’.”

Filling job vacancies with a housing bonus Sue Newman

Nelson company might have hit on the ultimate sweetener when it comes to attracting key staff for hard-tofill positions in regional towns.

They’ve offered a $25,000 home deposit and a gym membership to successful job candidates and the results have been immediate.

Vacancies that failed to raise a flicker of interest have suddenly generated not only interest but applications.

And these are not just run-ofthe-mill jobs, they’re in areas where Ashburton also struggles – young professionals who’re keen to move out of the city rat race and to become part of a community, people who will come, stay, settle and raise a family.

And it’s not just a one-way street. Yes, the employer wins by gaining a valuable staff member, but the employee also wins on many fronts.

For most young people fresh out of university or polytech, the gift of a $25,000 home deposit would be like gold. In many markets that money would still be a huge leap away from the required deposit, but in Ashburton, where the average house price hovers around $330,000 (and hundreds of good homes are much cheaper) it’s a sizeable chunk of cash.

Ashburton, like Nelson, struggles to attract young professionals, but ask any who have taken the plunge, either as ex-pats returning home or as people looking for a quieter lifestyle, and they’ll tell you it’s the best move they’ve made.

But to anyone in Auckland, battling traffic, struggling to afford rent or a home deposit, the option of moving out and moving south is probably not on their radar. With a $25,000 incentive it could be. Yes, there would be a period of bonding involved, but during that time they’re likely to have moved up the corporate ladder far faster than they would in an intensely competitive Auckland market.

Employers would have to bite the bullet on the extra $25,000 they’d be paying their new employee, but that would be paid back many times over during the bonding period. And by the time that had expired, they would probably have an employee for life.

This station was located between Invercargill and Bluff and opened in 1913 operating for 78 years before closing down in 1991.

James Hampton was born at Southbridge near Ashburton in 1891 and died in Wellington in 1962.

He made a career as a radio telegraphist with the Post and Telegraph Department Coast Radio Stations around New Zealand.

He enrolled in World War One from Awarua Radio and served

as a Sapper with the NZ Wireless Troop, a little known unit in Mesopotamia now known as Iraq.

He fell ill and was evacuated to India in 1916 and was eventually discharged from the New Zealand Army, surviving the war.

James Henry Hampton’s name can be found on the Ashburton War Memorial online in Ashburton and his World War One service file can easily be found at Archives NZ on the internet.

In 2013 the average income for someone working in agriculture in Mid Canterbury was higher than elsewhere in New Zealand.

Retailer Nick Grayston new Warehouse CEO

Milk production down 7.2 per cent

BY TINA MORRISON Warehouse Group, New Zealand’s largest listed retailer, appointed Nick Grayston as its new chief executive, replacing Mark Powell.

Grayston will join Warehouse in December from Sears Holdings in Chicago where he has held senior leadership positions including president of footwear, home, fine jewellery and apparel, Auckland-based Warehouse said in a statement. Powell will continue with Warehouse until February to aid the transition, the company said.

Warehouse, which last month posted a 5.9 per cent drop in annual profit, is seeking to

generate earnings growth following a $100 million ‘refresh’ programme for its Warehouse stores, the acquisition of Noel Leeming and Torpedo 7, and its move into online sales. At Sears, Grayston has gained experience in leading change from traditional retail into omnichannel and integrated retail, building profitable businesses, driving operational turnarounds, changing business models and leading high-performance teams, the retailer said.

Prior to Sears, Grayston held senior executive positions with Foot Locker Inc companies in New York and other leadership roles in Canada and Europe.

The decline in New Zealand milk production gathered momentum in the month of September, according the Dairy Companies of New Zealand (DCANZ) data.

Milk production, in milksolids, came to 209,484 tonnes in September, down 7.2 per cent compared with 225,777 tonnes in September 2014.

A late autumn flush led to higher production in the earlier months but the trend turned in August, when production fell slightly compared with August in the previous year.

Fonterra, in a market update released earlier this month, said New Zealand production decreased by 1 per cent in August compared to the same month last year.

Fonterra has forecast its milk production to fall by 5 per cent this season and some forecasters expect New Zealand’s total production to fall by as much as 10 per cent.

Myth 1: Investing in the sharemarket is gambling Over the next few weeks I’m going to shine the light on three common investing myths in New Zealand. The first myth I’m going to bust is that investing in the sharemarket is similar to gambling and therefore is too risky as an investment.

tudies show the average Kiwi has a much lower proportion of their investments in shares compared to Australians and Americans, favouring instead, more conservative investments such as term deposits.

Although we are getting more exposure through KiwiSaver, on the whole people still have an aversion to shares.

casional crashes, trading scandals and other bad press that add to the perceived riskiness of shares.

Research in behavioural finance shows that people feel a loss twice as strong as they do a gain, which may explain why a lot of people settle for safer investments.

While both sharemarket investing and gambling involve risk of capital, gambling relies largely on luck.

When you buy shares you are taking part ownership in a company and therefore the right to potential business profits (via dividends).

A good profitable company which has manageable levels of debt and good growth prospects will likely to pay you a decent return for holding it and appreciate in value.

So does successful share investing come down to just picking one “winner”?

To do so would be to ignore one of the major advantages that the markets provide – the ability to spread your bets.

Through diversification it’s

entirely possible to pick 10 good shares, have two of them perform terribly and overall still have reasonable returns.

By investing in a fund diversified between industries, markets and countries, you are minimising your risk and increasing the likelihood of a more stable return.

Sharemarkets fluctuate, but in the long term have provided better returns than any other asset class.

Since the 2008 global financial crisis the NZX50 is up over 130 per cent and looks set to make new highs.

The 1987 sharemarket crash hit hard in New Zealand, but within a couple of years new highs were made.

Going back even further in time, if you had bought a small amount of each of the largest 500 companies in the US and reinvested the dividends you would have made an average of 10 per cent annually since 1930. Perhaps what most importantly differientiates the sharemarket from gambling is that the odds are on your side.

Message from the President

A&P Association President Lynette Lovett It is with pleasure my committee and I bring to you the 138th annual Ashburton A&P show on Friday, October 30 and Saturday, October 31, at the Ashburton Showgrounds.

My show theme this year is working on the land with machinery and people.

The feature marquee is situated behind the announcer’s box in the main trade area.

Some of the features are: rural women with cooking displays, New Zealand Safety demonstrating safety gear, unique solutions with farm plans and work-safe practices, Federated Farmers with the Rural Support Trust with employment agreements and depression awareness information, the Foundation for Arable Research with environmental farm plans and other issues facing the farming community.

Also New Zealand Police have the paddy-wagon for the children to climb in and their puppy and connecting with children programme. Red Cross will have their emergency preparedness truck on

display and a few of their latest apps, involving first aid and emergency preparedness.

The Newcomers’ Network and Safer Ashburton will also be there, along with a worm farm and Rural Fire units.

Over the two days there will be plenty of competition from the horse and pony rings to the dog trials.

Saturday competitions include donkeys, poultry, goats, sheep, cattle, alpacas, shearing and the wool and Highland Dancing up on the dancing stage.

The Home Industries Pavilion will be the place to see the children’s sections, grain and seeds, to all the lovely cooking, handwork, photography, flowers, etc.

The Young Farmers will have their small animals along with a gate-hanging competition.

On Friday and Saturday pony parties will have pony rides available.

On Saturday the clydesdale horses from Erewhon station will be giving the public rides in the wagon.

Also on Saturday, the Hokonui entertainment stage will host an array of cultural and vocal entertainment. Some highlights are performances from our local schools– St Joseph’s and Netherby. There will also be performances from Ladybank Learning School of Music, the Cook Islands Cultural Group, a baby show and the Up-cycle wearable waste competition.

The grand parade will start at 2pm and include vehicles from the vintage car club and the vintage machinery club and, of course, competing stock and horses. A lolly scramble will follow the parade. Then members of the Ashburton Car Club will demonstrate their vehiclehandling skills. With more than 100 trade sites and 80 indoor and outdoor market sites, there is plenty to see and do.

With only $10 admission fee each day and children free, we promise you a good two days of entertainment.

Volunteers are needed

Show president Lynette Lovett will step down this year at the end of her two-year stint in the job.

Many of the current batch of volunteers have donated time to the show for many years and new blood was needed, Mrs Lovett said.

“Whether that’s on the committee or volunteering to help out with setting up and dismantling the show.

We need the younger generation to come and give us a hand – to start to take ownership of the show so it will be there for future generations,” Mrs Lovett said.

The effort involved in planning the two-day event is gargantuan.

Show jumps need to be hauled out for course builders to work their magic, the dog trial area set up, trade sites marked out – the list goes on.

With multiple events taking place at the same time, a small army of marshals is also required.

But Mrs Lovett said it’s not all hard work and no play.

“We actually have a lot of fun – there is a social element to being involved with the show,” she said.

There’s something for everyone For the very young it’s all about face painting, balloons, junk food and carnival rides, for the more sedentary it’s a chance to reminisce about days gone by.

Most rural people have memories of their local A&P show spanning decades, and while there have been many changes, the ambience remains the same.

The skirl of bagpipes still signals the start of the grand parade, the president’s speech, the children with their ponies and assorted pets, will be as much part of this year’s Ashburton A&P Show as they were at its inception.

Over the years classes have been added

and withdrawn. Once deemed rare and exotic creatures alpacas now demand a fair slice of the penning space, and are always crowd pleasers.

This year’s theme is Working the Land with Machinery and People, with an emphasis on health and safety, A&P Association President Lynette Lovett said.

A feature marquee will contain displays and information from a range of relevant community groups, businesses and organisations.

The Newcomers Network, Safer Ashburton and Ashburton police (complete with a paddy wagon) will be stationed in the marquee.

A&P Show still relevant Strong entries across the board for this year’s Ashburton A&P Show demonstrate the event’s continuing relevance in the community.

Entries closed on Wednesday last week, leaving show secretary Lucille Brown and her team the massive task of compiling the catalogue.

“A lot of the entries come in online, but we still get a lot of the home industries entrants and children arriving at the showgrounds to

deliver their entries,” Mrs Brown said.

Equestrian entries looked to be up on last year, with many competitors prepared to travel in order to eye up the rivals before the Canterbury A&P Show the following week.

In a year where many businesses are feeling the pinch of the dairy downturn, show president Lynette Lovett said it was important for people to get out and have a “chin-wag”.

“The show offers a chance for people to

Radio Hokonui DJ Hoops will once again compere the entertainment, with a stellar line up of performers set to take the stage.

Clint Hawkins will be back with his face paints and balloon animals, and the ever popular baby show will draw in the district’s cutest kids.

Mrs Lovett was in the process of finalising the major entertainment act last week.

Vintage enthusiasts can get their fill of the machinery of yesteryear during the grand parade, and petrol heads will get their fix when car club members get a burnout opportunity in the main oval after the parade.

This year’s Ashburton A&P Show will deliver all this and much more.

Organisers have made some changes to the layout this year, pushing the trades sites west and opening up the grounds, which Mrs Lovett said will enable better pedestrian flow.

Fairground rides and entertainment will also be moved closer to the home industries shed.

The changed layout will also create more room for equestrians at the eastern end of the main ring.

Seasonal delight Asparagus is one of the few vegetables that has remained truly seasonal.

Almost everything else, whether it’s been forced in a hot house or imported, can be found – at a cost – just about any time of the year, but not asparagus.

Its arrival in the vege section of the supermarket indicates that spring has truly arrived. And because the asparagus season is so short, it’s great to make the most of it in dozens of ways from soups and in salads through to using it as a key ingredient with pasta or stirfries.

Fettuccine with asparagus and mushrooms 250g packet fettuccine 1T olive oil 1 large bunch asparagus, woody ends removed and cut into small pieces 3T chicken stock 1/2 t dried crushed chillies 200g mushrooms, sliced 60g (1/2 C) freshly grated Parmesan cheese

Asparagus soup 450g fresh asparagus 2 medium onions, diced 125ml vegetable stock 20g butter 2T plain flour 1t salt 1 pinch ground black pepper 315ml vegetable stock 250ml milk 125ml yoghurt 1t lemon juice 30g grated Parmesan cheese ■ Place asparagus and onion in a saucepan with 1/2 C of stock.

■ Bring to a boil, reduce heat and let simmer until the vegetables are tender.

■ Reserve a few asparagus tips for garnish. Blend remaining vegetable mixture until smooth.

■ Melt butter in the saucepan that was used for simmering the asparagus and onions.

■ Stir while sprinkling flour, salt, and pepper into the butter.

■ Do not let the flour brown. Allow the mixture to cook only two minutes.

■ Stir in remaining stock and increase the heat.

■ Continue stirring until the mixture comes to a boil.

■ Stir vegetable puree and milk

high heat.

■ Cook and stir the asparagus in the hot oil until tender, about five minutes.

■ Pour in the lemon juice then season to taste with salt and pepper.

■ Place the asparagus into a serving dish then sprinkle with Parmesan cheese to serve.

■ Cook the fettuccine according to packet instructions; drain.

■ Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan.

■ Cook asparagus in the pan over medium heat for about three minutes.

■ Add chicken stock, chillies and mushrooms; cook three minutes more.

■ Gently toss fettuccine with the asparagus mixture; sprinkle with Parmesan cheese to serve.

What’s in a name?

I

have often been asked, why call a club 206? The answer is simple – a home at 206 Cameron Street.

This was a group formed many years ago when some wise women saw a need for an activity that catered for older folk in the town who maybe lived alone or were in need of compatible company.

The idea eventually became a reality with the purchase of 206 Cameron Street as their home base. There’s no mystery in the name – a practical solution to identify the group that eagerly awaited their day out in congenial surroundings. So why is it still active many years later? I often used to pop in to say hello and was always intrigued at the enthusiasm of the participants. So I decided it was time that I spent a day with the group.

206 operates Monday to Wednesday with a different group each day. I chose a Wednesday.

There was much chattering and barracking as everyone turned up and greeted one another. Morning tea was served by volunteers, Norma and Dulcie.

Next came a Bring and Buy with goods for sale provided by the participants themselves. It was amazing what goods were on offer and the fierce competition to purchase.

It was soon time, with volunteer musician Bev at the piano, to accompany simple exercises either standing or sitting, concluding with a sing-a-long.

Sometimes they have fun with Moira and her percussion instruments. The programmes always vary.

Following some jokes that Mary always seems to produce, the serious time came – housie, playing

for sweets. This brought out the sharpness of some of the minds, some using four cards at a time and the individual piles of sweets began to accumulate.

Norma and Dulcie were great callers. I played three cards, which was my limit, and only managed three sweets. My only excuse – a busy mind occupied in many other directions!

A substantial two-course hot meal was provided by volunteer Rosa. Each person pays $10 towards the day.

It was quiet time after lunch and then out came the cards and board games. I am not a card player and with Scrabble I get too frustrated with all the so-called legitimate words that I have never heard of.

I felt vindicated when I asked what did a certain word actually mean and they had no idea. What is more important is that they knew what they were doing and were having fun.

The 206 Club is a great activity in Ashburton, providing social interaction and activities, but is dependent on the dedicated leader and willing volunteers.

There is always room for more members, no subscription and no referral needed from a professional.

Guineas plans taking shape The powerful Te Akau operation have all but confirmed their Group One runners for Riccarton.

Trainers Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards will have at least two colts in the Gr.1 Sothys NZ 2000 Guineas, while they have trimmed their Gr.1 NZB 1000 Guineas representation to three.

Scrutinize and Xtravagant are definite contenders for the November 7 feature, and last-start maiden winner Bishop Rock remains in the mix.

“Xtravagant had a nice win at Trentham to build his confidence and he arrived at Riccarton this (Tuesday) morning,” Richards said.

“Dan Miller, who travelled with him, was very happy.”

The current $4 favourite, Xtravagant was a runaway winner of the Guineas Trial on Saturday while Scrutinize finished seventh in the Gr.2 James & Annie Sarten Memorial on Monday.

Rule change

The latest edition of the Rules of Golf will keep players from being disqualified if a penalty is discovered after they have signed their scorecards.

Players who are not aware of a rules violation until after their rounds have been knocked out of the tournament because when the penalty is applied, they are guilty of signing for the wrong score.

Now there is an exception to Rule 6-6d that says a player will not be disqualified for an incorrect scorecard if he was not aware of the rules violation when he signed the card.

The rules are updated every four years.

The biggest change, previously announced, was banning the anchored stroke that was used primarily for long putters.

Hole-in-one for a million Two years after a freak Segway accident kept him away, American golfer Brandt Snedeker will tee up in the Australian PGA Championship on the Gold Coast, with the added bonus of a chance to win $1 million for one shot.

World No.30 Snedeker was entered in the 2013 Australian PGA only to be forced to withdraw when he strained knee ligaments when hopping off a Segway while at an event in China.

His return for the event at Royal Pines from December 3-6 is timely as he’s enjoyed a good season after making swing changes with his coach Butch Harmon.

The 2012 Fedex Cup winner recorded his seventh US PGA Tour victory at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am early this year and following up with a further five top-10 finishes.

“I’m excited to finally get to the Gold Coast in December.

“I have always enjoyed playing golf down under, it’s a pretty spot and the fans are always so welcoming,” said Snedeker.

“I was disappointed that I wasn’t able to make the trip in 2013 but I will be steering clear of Segways so that I can give winning the title my best shot.”

The Australian PGA will be playing host to a $1 million prize hole - a feature not seen in Australian golf since the early 80s.

On the Sunday those competing in the final round will have the chance to win a million dollars by making a hole-in-one on the 16th hole - which will have a a bar, viewing platforms and seating areas for fans.

Road closure proposal

Ashburton District Council gives public notice of a proposal to temporarily close roads to ordinary vehicle traffic to enable the holding of a community event - “Methven Mountain Thunder Motorcycle Street Race.”

Pursuant to the Transport (Vehicular Traffic Road Closure) Regulations 1965, notice is hereby given that the Ashburton District Council, for the purpose of allowing Carol Johns to hold the Santa Parade, proposes to close the following roads to ordinary vehicular traffic for the period indicated hereunder.

Weather gods shine on croquet courts

The South Canterbury Handicap Tournament proved to be a resounding success at the Waireka Croquet Club over the

weekend and Labour Day. The singles final was won by Graeme Simpson of the Aorangi Croquet Club in Timaru, while the doubles competition was won

by Jenny Macnab and Jim Hopley

of the Awamoa Gardens Club in Oamaru.

Tournament organiser Raylene Phillips said the fine weather on Monday provided perfect playing conditions.

“It was just wonderful.

“It was a bit cold for the singles final on Sunday, but if you had to pull a day out of the bag, today’s (Monday’s) weather was great for croquet,” she said.

“It was a great tournament played in great spirits, we had players from Waimate, Winton, Timaru, Oamaru and Ashburton, and so it was a well-represented tournament.”

Pink cricket ball prepares for its biggest test in Adelaide

same ground late next month.

South Australia will host New South Wales amid growing concerns about how the pink ball will hold up for the test.

However, NZ Cricket and the New Zealand players’ association are confident the pink ball will stay.

“Cricket Australia are still confident the ball will hold up and at this stage they’re not in any sort of panic mode, and are planning ahead as scheduled,” NZC manager of cricket Lindsay Crocker said.
