The world-famous hotel which inspired Fawlty Towers is to be knocked down after developers secured permission to convert the site into a retirement home. John Cleese based the iconic sitcom on the Gleneagles Hotel in Torquay, Devon, after staying there with the Monty Python team in 1973. Former owner Donald Sinclair unwittingly became the inspiration for Cleese’s neurotic character Basil Fawlty. The 41-bedroom hotel ceased trading early this year and Churchill Retirement Living will now knock down the three-star hotel and build 21 one-bed and 11 two-bedroom apartments, with a guest suite and two communal lounges.

Dame Malvina signs off One of New Zealand’s top opera singers is hanging up her microphone after 50 years of singing on stage. Dame Malvina Major has announced her retirement as an opera singer - now choosing to spend her time helping the next generation of singers, including Kiwi musical trio Sol3 Mio. The 72-year-old, crowned New Zealand Entertainer of the Year in 1992, said her days were now spent teaching at Waikato University and travelling overseas visiting top music institutions. “My time is now devoted to the young people,” she said on Newstalk ZB. Dame Malvina admitted the shift from singing on stage to teaching was different. “I absolutely adored my performing. I loved being an actress and I loved being in character in opera.” However, she had no regrets. “I’ve been to some wonderful places and met some wonderful people,” she said. Some opera singers were born with the “x-factor” - something that cannot be taught, she said.

Kiwi scientists have developed a rubber computer keyboard that can flex, stretch, and bounce if dropped. Researchers at University of Auckland’s Biomimetics Lab say the stretchable keyboard, made with a thin sheet of rubber, can wrap around any object. “Imagine a world where you drop something, and it bounces back without any damage,” said doctoral candidate Daniel Xu, an author of the paper reported this week in the journal Smart Materials and Structures. “That’s the benefit of these rubber devices that can flex and stretch.”

Jaw-dropping faces X Factor runner-up Taylor Henderson is a man of many faces. The young singer showed off his unique talent for pulling a range of faces on the ARIA red carpet in Australia this week. The skill is due to having a condition called Marcus Gunn Jawwinking Syndrome, a rare condition that means, as Henderson explains to Scoopla, “my eyes literally connect to my mouth ... so if I open my mouth my eyelids move”. Henderson, much to the amazement of those watching, continued to pull a range of faces just by moving his mouth, including have his eye roll into the back of his head. “I can do all sorts of weird stuff with my face, it’s really weird,” Henderson said. “It’s pretty disturbing, I don’t show a lot of people that. Mid Canterbury principals are frustrated that a proposed education review has been sprung on them so close to the end of the year. Education Minister Hekia Parata announced a revamp of the Education Act at the beginning of this month. Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association president Chris Murphy said the frustrating thing was that there was not much time available to consider the proposals. But he hoped the Ministry of Education would consider each school’s contribution. “We’re all really hopeful that

we’re going to be listened to. “I’m very much approaching this with glass-half-full goggles and I’m taking the ministry at their word.” A meeting was held with schools, other interested parties and the ministry in Ashburton on Thursday which gave them more information, he said. However, Ashburton College Principal Grant McMillan was more sceptical about the review. Mr McMillan said the proposal only had five of the 20 recommendations created by the Taskforce on Regulations Affecting School Performance in 2014. Most of the proposals were unclear and put accountability on

schools rather than the ministry, he said. One example was that they wanted to make boards of trustees responsible for ensuring each child achieved to the best of their ability but there was nothing to say that the ministry needed to resource schools to make sure of this. This would mean that it was perfectly feasible for an unhappy parent to sue their board of trustees because their child’s spelling was not up to scratch but the ministry would not have to provide enough funding, Mr McMillan said. “I think what they’re trying to do makes it clearer what should be expected of schools, but do it in a

way that doesn’t make themselves accountable.” He was also concerned that the review was being done so late in the year and did not feel like schools were being properly consulted. “It’s being jammed through in the last five weeks before Christmas.” In the meeting on Thursday the ministry said they were engaging with schools rather than consulting with them, which made it seem like they might not listen to any submissions, he said. “It stinks like a rotten barrel of fish.” The Education Act did need to be updated but they were going

about it in the wrong way. They were trying to put policytype statements of intent rather than regulations into law, Mr McMillan said Hampstead School principal Peter Melrose said he also felt as though the proposal had been sprung on them at short notice. Thursday’s “engagement” also did not do much to reassure him. “The questions that we are being asked have a particular slant and that bias seems to have some sort of agenda. “The way the engagement has been worded feels that the outcome has been pre-determined.” The consultation process runs until December 14.

Hollywood beckons for four talented Mid Canterbury teenagers, who have qualified to compete in the World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA). Ashburton’s Annelise Diamond, Jack Bubb, Ruby Donaldson, and Methven’s Brooke Sandys individually presented singing, dancing or acting pieces at auditions in front of judges in Christchurch at the weekend. They found out this week they are among those who have been invited to join the WCOPA New Zealand team. Team director Dina Janse van Rensburg said about 45 had made the cut from about 170 who had so far auditioned from throughout the country. There would be one more lot of auditions in Dunedin this weekend. The 45 were mostly teenagers but aged up to 40, and Mrs Janse van Rensburg hoped about half of them would ultimately accept the invitation to travel to Los Angeles to compete at the championships in the July school holi-

days next year. With participants covering their own airfares, accommodation and other expenses, the cost of the trip can run into thousands, and some may decline the opportunity as they may not feel they have enough time to fundraise. The trip to Hollywood would see team members get boot camp training from industry professionals before going for gold against other contestants from more than 50 countries. A total of $380,000 in scholarships is awarded, and about 100 managers, agents, producers and casting directors are invited to judge. An opening ceremony parade of nations sees each country teams march proudly in their respective national costumes. Mrs Janse van Rensburg said the high proportion of invitees from the Mid Canterbury area was representative of the talent in the district. “The talent in Ashburton is amazing, I don’t know what you feed them,” Mrs Janse van Rensburg said.

Take a Google Earth flight over Mid Canterbury to discover how the district has “Grown from Water” at Ashburton Museum’s striking new exhibit. The final permanent exhibit to be installed in the museum was officially opened yesterday when irrigation guru Bob Engelbrecht and project videographer Dick Hansen cut the ribbon, fulfilling a long held vision of museum curator Michael Hanrahan. Grown from Water was largely funded by grants from various trusts and organisations to the tune of $170,000. The touch screen technology developed by Kevin Wright’s company, Complete Package, and the display cabinets by Dick Hansen, in keeping with existing displays. Mayor Angus McKay said the despite good soils, climate and innovative people the district’s economy would not be what it is today without the vision of its irrigation pioneers. “It is the story of the life-blood of this district,” he said. Above the interactive screen a painting done on the lid of a tea chest hangs. It is the work of Keith Youthed, a carpenter at the Burgess Camp, set up for workers on the development of the Rangitata Diversion Race. The display includes newspa-

Variety Theatre Ashburton is hoping to attract more men and boys at pre-audition workshops for its 2016 production of Oliver. Vice president Kim Vessey said about 20 children and 20 adults had turned out for the first workshops this week. She hoped more would turn out to the next and final pre-audition workshops to be held on Wednesday next week, with more boys and men being required. Altogether a cast of about 50 is required, about half children and half adults. The main role of Oliver will need to be a boy who can sing and act, most likely eight to 14 years old. The other main child role of The Artful Dodger is likely to be filled by an older boy. The pre-audition workshops next Wednesday are for children at 6.30pm, and adults at 7.40pm, at the Celtic Rugby Clubrooms on Keenans Road. Auditions will be held on December 5.

After months of trying to find a tenant for its café in the Ashburton art and heritage centre, the Ashburton District Council has given up. It has advertised, tried word of mouth, done everything except give the space away, but still it cannot find any takers and at Thursday’s council meeting, the idea of a café in the complex was canned. In a report to council, business support group manager Paul Brake suggested that the lack of interest in the café was likely due to tough conditions around its operation. These were set as part of the resource consent granted for the complex’s construction. Mr Brake suggested the council needed to change tack, abandon the café option and look at alternative uses for the space. The museum is a council controlled organisation while the art gallery and the family history groups are tenants in the building and that meant that as the council effectively ran the museum, it should have first call on the café

space, Mr Brake said. “As a tenant, the art gallery would stand behind the museum; if the museum doesn’t want it then the gallery has the option.” The council had planned to let the café unfinished and unfurnished so it could be laid out according to the needs of the tenant. That meant there was no money in the budget for the council to finish the space for any other use, he said. There is no ceiling, plumbing is exposed and part of an internal wall is unlined. Mr Brake recommended council staff decide on the future of the space but that made councillor Russell Ellis uneasy. “I’d rather staff came back with a recommendation to us. This building has proved to be highly sensitive over the years and I’d like us to approve the use of this area rather than just delegating it to staff to do,” he said. Councillor Alan Totty, suggested the museum had already come up with a possible use for the space, but councillors narrowly voted to make the decision on the area’s future use, rather than leave the decision to staff.

Successful calf sale for IHC A calf sale at Tinwald has helped top up the coffers of the Ashburton branch of the IHC for another year. Local farmers had raised 180 calves to weaning weight for the IHC, thanks to the good work of scheme canvassers Daniel and Nicole Jackson. Nationwide, the scheme raises

more than $1million annually. PGG Wrightson dairy rep Victor Schikker said all up, 747 calves were offered at Thursday’s sale at the Tinwald yards, in front of a reasonably solid gallery of buyers. Prices averaged out at $340 with just five animals failing to attract bidders.

The top line of friesian bull calves fetched $410, and beef calves $420. Other beneficiaries included Rakaia, Wakanui, Longbeach and Mt Somers Springburn schools and the Mayfield A&P Association. The remainder were offered by eight private vendors.

Firefighters were called to two Mid Canterbury blazes caused by strong winds overnight on Thursday. Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade deputy chief fire office Tyrone Burrowes said a couple of hundred metres of blue gum trees caught alight after a rubbish fire was spread by wind on Taverners Road, Dromore, at 2.59am. Firefighters from Rakaia, Pendarves and Ashburton spent near-

ly three hours dousing the flames which did not cause much damage. The undergrowth and some of the trees were burnt but the owner of the property had no major losses, he said. Firefighters around the South Island were called to 19 weather-related incidents - which included roofing coming loose, powerlines arcing and falling down and fallen trees. Social housing plan needs cash backing By Sue NewmaN

Providing a pool of social housing in Ashburton is proving to be a tough task for a small team of people determined to provide accommodation options for the community’s most needy. The Ashburton Citizens’ Association and Presbyterian Support have joined forces to work on a project they hope will come up with the answer to Ashburton’s growing social housing

problem. The problems are clear, but finding solutions, without a pool of cash, is difficult, said Presbyterian Support manager Jackie Girvan. “There’s no government funding and whatever we do it will have to be managed. In Christchurch, money is put into this but Ashburton is seen as not having an issue,” she said. There was clear evidence that this was not the case, Mrs Girvan

said, with accommodation gaps in living options for single men, low income families and the elderly, who may not qualify for the Ashburton District Council’s housing scheme. The social housing group is working with other organisations involved in developing accommodation and would shortly meet with a team from the Abbeyfields Charity that provided affordable housing across New Zealand for older people.

“The will to do it is there because there’s a real need. It just needs money,” Mrs Girvan said. Citizens’ association spokesperson Diane Rawlinson said the association had become involved in the social housing project because members were aware that Ashburton was struggling to meet the housing needs of the community. “We saw this as a project where we could help achieve a very positive outcome.

“We’ve been working away quietly on this and we can see some pretty exciting things evolving,” she said. “We’re making progress but you can’t turn the wheel quickly, at the end of the day it all comes down to funding.” Like Mrs Girvan, she sees the key to any housing project as having the right management in place to ensure properties were tenanted appropriately and maintained to a good standard.

Last week a shipping container arrived on a back section on Cambridge Street; by early December the contents of that container will have become a new home. And that home, owner Julianne Taylor believes, could be the key to providing homes for people struggling to find somewhere warm, secure and affordable to live. She’s the owner of several rental properties and, faced with an empty section after a house fire, looked for a building option that was affordable for her and one that would provide a good living environment for tenants. When she found a company that produced kitset homes with a build cost of just $110,000 and a construction time of around three weeks, Mrs Taylor knew she was onto a winner. “I’d been looking in the States and then I found this guy in New Zealand producing these kitset homes. I flew up to have a look and they were ideal. They look just like any other home. They’re all panels that just lock together, a bit like Lego,” she said. The houses are a basic rectangle and range from one to fivebedroom models. They come

with few options for change, but their insulation qualities are well above standard building standards. She’s sold on the houses and has two more planned in Ashburton. For her, it was a stress-free exercise - money up front, a container loaded with everything needed delivered on-site, with construction either by the Tuffbuild staff or the owner’s own builders. The purchase price includes carpets, drapes, vinyl, kitchen fitout and bathroom and laundry fixtures. Tuffbuild Company owner Neil Colliver is a licensed building practitioner and has been developing his kitset home concept over the past seven years. It’s been a long and expensive exercise, but he believes the finished product is filling a big gap in the affordable homes market. “We had rental homes ourselves and they often suffered at the hands of less than perfect tenants. I felt there had to be a better way to provide a warmer, stronger more secure home for people,” he said. New teacher brings global touch Work plan By RuBy HaRfield

Emma Hewett’s new life in her bustling Ashburton classroom is a far cry from her recent experiences living in a city surrounded by jungle. Mrs Hewett joined the staff at Ashburton Borough School at the beginning of Term 4 after spending five years teaching at an international school in Borneo. The newcomer is teaching Year 5 and 6 students until the end of 2015 but will be leading Year 7 and 8 next year. Mrs Hewett and her husband Shane originally moved to the city of Kuching, the capital of Malaysian state Sarawak, for two years for the teacher to work as head of primary school at an international school. They ended up staying for five years, having a number of adventures and expanding their family to include their one-yearold son Fletcher. The school was made up of 500 students from kindergarten to secondary school age and 80 teachers, she said. Many of the teachers and students were expats, but there were also a lot of locals including students who wanted an international education, she said.

“It was a real mix. The staff were incredibly multi-cultural.” There were always celebrations of different cultures, they were very inclusive, she said. “That’s why Borneo is quite lovely.” The school tried to focus their curriculum on the national environment with one of the units being about the rain forest. “We were pretty much in the heart of the jungle.” Children from other schools would contact her students to ask them questions about the rain forest. “We wanted to work on them understanding their own habitat.” Living in Borneo took a bit to get used to, especially because it was surrounded by jungle. “We would see monkeys when we were going for a walk. There was once a scorpion in the swimming pool and you couldn’t sit outside on the grass because of the ants. “Sometimes the school kids would scream because there was a snake at school. “It’s surprising how much you get used to it.” Ten minutes from the city there was a local village where people lived in huts and washed clothes in the river. great, because although he is a New Zealand citizen he would always have the reminder with his Malaysian birth certificate, she said. After five years, both Mrs Hewett and her husband felt it was time to return home and are now living in Geraldine, where

Mr Hewett grew up. Teaching in New Zealand was different and she hoped to be able to implement some of her international teaching experiences, such as a focus on differentiated and individual learning, into her Ashburton Borough School classroom.

Signing off on next year’s work plan was at the top of the agenda for the Ashburton Service Level Alliance (SLA) at its meeting last week. The SLA is part of the Canterbury Clinical Network and is an integrated health group consisting of health care providers, leaders and professionals from around Mid Canterbury. The aim of the group is to aid the transformation of local healthcare services. Last week the SLA had its third meeting, the focus of which was to finalise a work plan for the year ahead. SLA facilitator Craig Watson said the group also met with a number of guest speakers including Kathy O’Neill, who provided the group with an overview of Ashburton’s mental health services. Two Kaikoura SLA members were also in attendance, talking to the group about how their group operates. Mr Watson said it was also determined the Ashburton SLA would work closely with the Ministry of Social Development next year to further develop the district’s social services.

In brief St Andrew’s Day Mid Cantabrians with Scottish heritage are invited to put on their kilts and come along to the annual St Andrew’s Day church service tomorrow. To be held at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, a Scottish piper will pipe the tartans up to the front of the church. Ministry assistant Dellwyn Moylan said those bringing tartans will leave them at the front, where they will be blessed. Miss Moylan said this obviously did not include kilts, and tartans brought on the day could be in fabric form, or as a tie or scarf. “David (Brown, the minister) always says ‘please do not take your kilt off if you are wearing one’.” After the service haggis will be served. Members of the County Scottish Society were expected to attend in their kilts.

Calming colour Art student Jill Dolan gets creative under the watchful eye of Jenny’s Art Group tutor Jenny Thompson. The art group has its annual end-of-year exhibition under way at the Short Street Studio. It opened yesterday and will be held again today from 2pm to 4pm. Mrs Thompson has been running her “stress-free” classes for about 10 years, and has about 30 students in all. If Santa ever required a Southern Hemisphere hideaway far from his home in the North Pole, Frank Sandys’ Methven residence might be just the place. Mr Sandys is already mounting Christmas lights around his house and half-acre section, in preparation for opening it up to the public on December 6. Each year the Methven grandfather welcomes young and old to view a wide range of light displays, and this year will be the biggest yet. “Each year I want to make it better, I want people to enjoy it,” Mr Sandys said.

He had made three trips to Australia this year in order to source lights and inflatable displays from a Sydney supplier, and generally spent about $4500 per year upgrading his stock. He was also interested in hearing from people with old Christmas light figures who did not want them any more. Mr Sandys planned to create a walk throughout his section, which could include a cave for Father Christmas’ workshop. The display was free and people could give a donation if they wished. Last year hundreds had visited, from as far afield as Timaru and Christchurch, and in three nights he had raised $1100 for the Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade.

New Zealand features in Isis’ latest propaganda video. A polished, four-minute video has surfaced online through Isis’ media outlet, the Al Hayat Media Center. The video, entitled “No respite” features a graphic of 60 flags – representing “The global coalition against the Islamic State” – and includes New Zealand. An efficient new watering system should be installed at the Hakatere Marae before Christmas. Volunteers have struggled to keep young trees alive on the dry, windswept, two-hectare block. Now IrrigationNZ has partnered with Rangitata Diversion Race Management (RDRML) and Waterforce to put in a Smart Watering system. IrrigationNZ launched the Smart watering programme this week and Ashburton is one of four towns selected to trial it. Smart watering is modelled on the Smart Irrigation technology in use on farms, to encourage home gardeners to think about efficient water use. Currently the marae is supplied with water by the Ashburton District Council but limited to 1000 litres a day without incurring costs. Marae spokesperson Janet Benfell said a water tank had recently been installed to collect rainwater from the Wharenui roof – but the rain had yet to eventuate. Waterforce irrigation designer Dan McLaughlin this week presented a plan for a drip irrigation system at the marae. He said the system would work well in

the stony soils, targeting the roots of the trees and leaving the weeds to dry out and die off in the summer heat. “A thousand litres is not a lot of water, particularly if there are guests at the marae, it’s important to get the best use from it,” Mr McLaughlin said. The system will be electronically operated freeing up a lot time for gardener Riki Hollis, who currently waters with a hose. RDRML CEO Ben Curry said it was a no brainer for the company to get behind this community project. “After all the painstaking planting work that’s been done we were more than happy to contribute to the cost of getting this up and running,” Mr Curry said. “Using water wisely is important – it’s a precious resource, and targeted use is important.” The plantings will shelter the marae from the district’s notorious nor’west gales, reduce traffic noise from adjacent State Highway 1 and will eventually support their vision of being part of a native corridor for birds to visit and feed from across the plains. “It will take time but we are looking forward to it,” Mrs Benfell said. “We are still fighting the rabbits though.”

It is hoped aerial bird surveys conducted this week by Environment Canterbury will help solve the mystery of where thousands of nesting Ashburton River black billed gulls have gone. Earlier this month there were about 4000 in a colony below the State Highway 1 bridge, but now there is only about 800. A weedy river bed has made it more difficult for the critically endangered birds this season. An unexpected proliferation of yellow lupins has reduced the nesting area, making the birds more susceptible to floods and freshes. There has also been human disturbance on the river, particularly from four-wheeldrivers who removed concrete block barriers preventing access. Last season a super colony established at the site, with about 10,000 birds, the largest found in a South Island survey. ECan is conducting the aerial survey for the second year this year, to try and establish what the baseline population of the gulls is. A light plane was to fly over the more than one dozen braided rivers from the Waitaki to the Clarence for two days this week. Photographs were to be taken and the birds were to be counted from the photos, with results released later in the season.

Who’s on board with St John? S

t John is the only contracted emergency ambulance provider in Ashburton and St John spokesman Ian Henderson said the Ashburton community could have confidence in the service delivered to patients and there was no need for another provider. So who is part of an ambulance crew? In Ashburton, St John operates two ambulances, a health shuttle and has eight paid staff as well as 16 volunteers. Where possible, St John aim to have a paid staff member on every call-out, as well as a volunteer. St John Ashburton attended over 3000 emergency call outs last year, a 5.2 per cent increase from 2013 and the most call-outs since 2007. Mr Henderson said ambulance officers have different practice levels, and authority to practise (ATP) is shown with epaulettes on the shoulders of ambulance officers. First responder (FR): Ambulance officers practising at this level have undergone a comprehensive first aid course, as well as a specialist module specific to their environment (ambulance, events or communications). First responders have no ATP and cannot administer prescription medicines independently. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT): This base ambulance qualification is the first level to be issued an ATP. These officers have successfully completed the National Diploma in Ambulance Practice. This course takes six to 12 months to complete and includes core skills, as well as the theory and application of key concepts relating to both medical and traumatic events. Paramedic (PARA): Paramedics are capable of delivering some medicines to patients requiring pain relief, or who are in shock or continuously fitting. Officers at this level have either completed an internal education package, or have completed a three-year Bachelor of Health Science in Paramedicine degree. Intensive Care Paramedic

hat made you decide to run for the 2016 election for head girl? Having watched the speeches for head boy and girl over the past four years they inspired me to take up leadership roles, so when the opportunity came up I thought it would be an amazing experience.

Head boy, girl reflect Kate Whiting Favourite part of Year 13? The teachers give you so much more leeway with a lot of tasks so you have more responsibility. You do have to do a lot of stuff on your own so it comes with a price. Favourite part of being Head Girl? Speeches. You get up there and you feel like you’ve talked to a whole lot of people. I always hope that I get my message across to at least one person. View on the flag change? I don’t really have an opinion on it, but I do have some queries about it, is it the right time to do it economically? What are you planning to do after Year 13? I’m planning on doing a Bachelor of Science at UC with an endorsement of Environmental Science. What do you like about Environmental Science? Because in our country of four illion people, even if only one person in one thousand purchases and drops a plastic bev-

Pollution is something that I’m really passionate about, and in the future I want to go on to become a part of the solution for it.

Lachie Davidson Favourite part of Year 13? That would be finally being the big kids in the school and having younger students look up to you. Also being Year 13 it means teachers are a bit more relaxed and it’s easier to have fun with them and joke around a bit. Favourite part of being Head Boy? Just having some responsibility around the school and being able to help shape the school. Knowing that in my final year I got to be a big part of Ashburton College and be the 50th head boy was pretty epic.

View on the flag change? I like the idea of getting a new flag as I think, although there is history behind our current flag, it’s time we move on to something more personal. I like the idea of having a fern on our flag as it is what all our sports teams are represented by. What are you planning to do after Year 13? Next year I’m taking a gap year and travelling to South America. I’m volunteering with a company called Lattitude for five months in Ecuador and four months in Argentina and then I’ll go to Lincoln or Massey in 2017 and do an agricultural degree. What got you interested in volunteering in South America? At the start of the year I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do at the end of the year and we were shown a video in forum about volunteering so I looked into it a bit further and decided it would be a good way to spend a year and have a break from study.

hat do you think are good qualities for a leader? I believe dedication, commitment and reliability are good qualities in a leader. hat was your reaction to being named head girl for 2016? I was really happy and excited for the opportunity.

hat are you most excited for in your role as head girl next year? To be a role model that people can look up to and inspire other students to take up leadership roles.

To expand my leadership skills and learn how to work with a variety of people. ow will you find time to do other extracurricular activities as well as being head girl? My main focus will be head girl and school. It will be about prioritising my time. ow has the response from those around you been after they found about you being named head girl? My friends and family have all been excited and happy for me, the support has been really amazing to see.

o you think you are up for the challenge of being head girl? Yes I feel that I am and with any challenges that may arise I will work with Kerry (head boy) to overcome them.

Are our pipe Ashburton’s three main pipe organs have provided music in their town churches for generations. But the instruments are not in the strongest of positions and may not be able to ring out their majestic melodies forever. Susan Sandys reports.

shburton pipe organist Lynne Judkins learned to play the instrument as a teenager at the Durham Street Methodist Church in Christchurch. It was the same organ which was being removed from the earthquake-damaged church when the fatal February 22 earthquake of 2011 struck, killing the three men carrying it. It is a story that Mrs Judkins may shudder to consider, as she was the last organist to play at the Ashburton Baring Square Methodist Church before the church was closed to the public due to the same earthquake which had initially damaged the Durham Street church. The 7.1 magnitude September 4 earthquake of 2010 was on a Saturday. Unaware of the damage to their building, Baring Square parishioners filed into the church the following day for their regular Sunday service, but a service has not been held there since. This Guardian reporter and photographer were allowed into the yellow-stickered building, at our own risk, to photograph the 60-year-old organ and it remains in seemingly pristine condition. However, Mrs Judkins said it was impossible to know what sort of playing condition it would be in after being locked away for more than five years. “It was working alright the next day, but what has happened since then we don’t know,” she said. The main concern would be the instrument’s leathers, and whether any of the organ pipes had shifted. Any such issues would no doubt sound themselves to the world once the organ was started up again.

Mrs Judkins was pleased the parish had decided to retain the church building rather than rebuilding it, as demolition may have meant the end of the organ. While it would be possible to remove, it would be a complex job with hundreds of small pipes making up part of the fixture. Referred to as “the king of instruments”, pipe organs had been a favourite of composers for centuries. “It’s pretty mighty being able to play on something that gives so much grandeur,” she said. The Baring Square instrument is the largest of three pipe organs in the town; its pipes range up to a height of the tallest at 11 metres high, and it has a crescendo pedal. The other two main pipe organs in the town are at St Stephen’s Anglican Church and St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, which each have a tallest pipe of 5 metres. Each of the three organs have a whole room dedicated to housing their pipes. There are smaller pipe organs at St James’ Presbyterian Church at Tinwald, St Luke’s Church at Hinds and St Mark’s Anglican Church at Rakaia. Mrs Judkins is heartened that the church remained in relatively good condition with no leaks, which would have helped the organ stay in good shape. She believes the organ may need just a little specialist attention from the company based in Timaru which generally serviced it. St Stephen’s Anglican Church organist Graham Gunn had held similar fears for that church’s organ, the oldest in town at 107 years, when it was inaccessible for about two years following the earthquakes. But he needn’t have worried.

“When we had the first funeral in there and the organ hadn’t been looked at, I played it and it was in perfect condition. It wasn’t even out of tune. It amazed me.” Mr Gunn has been an organist in Ashburton for 59 years. He played at St Andrew’s for 50 years, prior to passing on the role to Ashburton College music teacher Stephen Diedricks about nine years ago. As well as playing at St Stephen’s, he still plays at St Andrew’s on Sunday evenings. The 76-year-old despairs of the future of pipe organ music in Ashburton, with no new up-andcoming organists on the scene. Each organ in the town had only two to three organists, with no replacements in the wings. St Andrew’s, which had its organ installed in 1941, had endeavoured

in 2007 to attract new students by offering scholarships, to no avail. “When I started off I was the youngest organist in Ashburton, now I’m probably one of the oldest,” Mr Gunn said. Additionally, there was the problem of funding. As church congregations dwindle and there is not enough money coming in, parishes could become reluctant to pay for the upkeep of their pipe organs, which could be expensive to maintain. It cost about $1600 per year in tuning fees alone. Mr Gunn remembered playing to full congregations at Sunday services, whereas now the church could be just one-quarter full and he remembered having to do three to four weddings every Saturday in summer and autumn.

“In those days people always got married in a church,” he said. Mr Gunn learned how to play the organ while still at high school in Ashburton, from Guyon Wells, the son of a GP in the town. “My word he was a great organist, he was a perfectionist. People said to me ‘You will be taking over from him’, and I just laughed at them.” But Mr Gunn did indeed get the opportunity to step up to the role, and undertook additional training and practice at St Paul’s in Christchurch to extend his musical repertoire. He still loves being a pipe organist today just as much as he did then and said nothing beats the feeling of playing to a large congregation putting their hearts and souls into singing.

The Mid Canterbury Sevens team were put through their paces at Devon Park on Thursday evening in a final training session ahead of the South Island Regional Tournament in Timaru today. Mark Cousins’ side played some warm-up matches last Saturday, falling to defeats against two Canterbury teams and South

Canterbury in Methven. The day was made worse by the loss of Nete Caucau, after the powerhouse midfielder picked up a knee injury that ruled him out of today’s tournament. Cousins said Thursday’s training session went well, but expects some tough encounters at Alpine Energy Stadium. “It was a good final hit-out. “All the teams there are going

to be good but we’ve had enough game time, so I’m happy with that,” he said. “The number of players that we’ve used has allowed us to look at a lot of guys, so I’m happy with the final squad.” The Hammers, who are seeded fourth in today’s tournament, will face Canterbury in their opening fixture at 10am, before locking horns with Tasman

at 11.40am and Southland at 1.20pm. Should Mid Canterbury advance, the knockout stages will begin at 3pm. Tietjens determined to reverse Dubai trend Sir Gordon Tietjens is taking an extended squad of 14 to the first two events of the 2015-16 HSBC World Series in Dubai and Cape Town. Tietjens said the thinking behind taking 14 players was to provide further incentive for all players to push for places in the final 12. He will follow the same format all season. “It’s for all those players to put pressure on others at training. “Knowing you’re not in the starting 12 you can get complacent and lose focus. I want pressure put on every individual in all the teams we name throughout the year. “For training it’s great to have

two teams of sevens up against each other which again creates more competition.” All Blacks and Chiefs halfback Augustine Pulu is set for a possible debut. Tietjens has been impressed with how quickly he has adapted to sevens, having not played the shortened game before. “He’s a fine rugby player. “He’s come on in leaps and bounds in the time he has been with us. The improvement has been immense this week. This is a great opportunity for him to put his hand up to have a crack at other teams this season. “He’s got very good vision. “He’s quick off the mark. He’s quick to spot a gap. He’s going to

keep teams honest and he’s very strong and physical.” He had high praise for Waikato speedster Regan Ware as well. “He’s the quickest player in the team. He’s a great defender and attacker. “It’s important we have a player like Regan out wide who can score tries from out of nothing, beating a man one-on-one so he’s a good player to have in the squad.” Long-serving former skipper DJ Forbes is also in the mix, while Bay of Plenty’s Teddy Stanaway, a 2009 New Zealand Under 20, will offer physicality and pace. t’s safe to say that Geoff Brown will be older than the vast majority, if not all, of the participants in the Longbeach Challenge on Sunday, but that doesn’t mean he’s any less enthusiastic than the 1000 others taking on their respective courses. Brown will turn 81 in a fortnight’s time and will take part in the event’s recreational ride with many other Last of the Summer Wine cycle members. After taking up cycling to help a knee complaint on the recommendation of his doctor 12 years ago, Brown now completes an eight-and-a-half kilometre circuit as often as possible. “This week I’ve been going out every morning. “I go out early when there’s not so much traffic. “I try to go every day in the summer, but I’d only go two or three times a week all year round,” he said. Having grown from just 270 participants in its inaugural year in 2007, the Challenge surpassed 1000 entries for the first time on Wednesday evening and Brown believes the varied choice of courses has played a major role in its boost in popularity. “You can just give it a go. “You don’t have to go right round if you feel tired or not up to it, someone will pick you up, so it’s very well conducted by the Lions Club,” he said. “You can enter in what you’re capable of doing. “It’s a wee bit of a challenge, I think people enjoy it. “One year a guy biked all the way in from Geraldine, went in the race, and biked home again.”

Big three ‘bullies’ New International Cricket Council chairman Shashank Manohar has hit out at the imbalance of the sport’s governing body which he said allowed Australia, England and India to bully the organisation. Rooney concerned as Vardy eyes EPL record Wayne Rooney believes misfiring Manchester United should follow the example of record-chasing Jamie Vardy in their summit meeting with surprise English Premier League leaders Leicester tonight. Leicester striker Vardy will make history at the King Power Stadium if he scores for a EPL record 11th successive match and his record bid couldn’t come at a more uncomfortable time for the struggling Rooney and United’s other out-of-form forwards. With 13 league goals this season, Vardy has scored more than all of United’s strikers combined and fittingly it is former Old Trafford great Ruud van Nistelrooy whose record he will break if he finds the net this weekend.

The makers of the controverial pink ball say they haven’t gagged Aussie speedster Mitchell Starc ahead of the historic day-night test against the Black Caps in Adelaide. Kookaburra is a sponsor of Starc who was staunch in his criticism of the pink ball earlier this year but has been strangely silent on it this week - aided and abetted by Aussie team officials who have been at pains to keep him away from media. The day-night Test is a landmark event for Kookaburra, which is confident in the years of hard work it’s put into the pink ball. - AAP

New Zealand Cricket is planning a round of Plunket Shield matches under lights early next year, with an eye on a possible day-night test with a pink ball the following summer. The round pencilled in starts on February 20 – the day the second test against Australia begins in Christchurch – when Auckland host Northern Districts at Eden Park; Central play Wellington at McLean Park; and Northern face Canterbury in Hamilton. That could lead to New Zealand’s first pink ball test, against Bangladesh next year. - NZME

Rooney and his fellow United forwards have only nine league goals to their credit and they drew a blank again in midweek with a 0-0 draw against PSV Eindhoven that left them in danger of missing out of the Champions League knockout stages. The jury in the Chris Cairns trial was gathering overnight to consider their verdicts for a second day. The five men and seven women on the jury had a two-day break to attend appointments postponed because of the marathon eight-week trial. In brief New NRL deal The NRL have announced a new broadcast rights deal worth $1.8 billion across five years beginning in 2018. All matches will be shown live on Fox Sports, with the Nine Network also broadcasting Thursday night, Friday night and Sunday afternoon football. Ben Mably will be Brisbane-bound in January to continue his journeyed cricket career with either Wynnum Manly District or South Brisbane cricket clubs. Mably, who enjoyed plenty of success with Ashburton College’s 1st XI, recently returned from a stint with Manawatu and has also turned out for Marist in Palmerston North. “We played against players like Tom Latham, Corey Anderson, all those boys were playing when I

started up for College,” he said. “Then moving up north, playing for Marist in Palmerston North was a brilliant experience and then Manawatu.” The 22-year-old is hoping his time across the Tasman will help achieve his eventual goal of playing domestic cricket. “I’m going over there for a real hard go at trying to make something out of it,” he said. “The long-term goal is obviously domestic cricket, in Australia, here, or even England, but I suppose I just want to enjoy my cricket

and if I can get a contract that’d be awesome.” Despite both clubs being an option, the all-rounder is leaning more towards South Brisbane, where he hopes to also turn out for the club’s rugby team at fullback or wing. Mably said he is pleased with his current form, after enduring a slightly less impressive spell with the bat last season. “Coming in to this new season my batting just wasn’t up to scratch. “Run scoring was down and my

confidence was down,” he said. “Now I’ve picked up a few runs early on and felt good with the bat, so I’m not worrying too much. “I just want to get out there.” The Tech player intends to play for Mid Canterbury until he departs on January 8, despite not being available for this weekend’s fixture, and is confident the 2004 winners will begin their Hawke Cup campaign in style against South Canterbury in Timaru today. “I think Mid Canterbury will do it outright, I think they have the boys there to do it,” he said.

The NRL has reportedly refused to register Sam Burgess’ big money deal with South Sydney, with the club being ruled to be over the salary cap. The Seven Network yesterday reported the game’s governing body had found that even with Dylan Walker’s release, the Rabbitohs were still over the player payment limit for 2016. Warriors winger Manu Vatuvei plans to pay tribute to Jonah Lomu throughout the 2016 NRL premiership season. Growing up in South Auckland in the early 1990’s, the former All Blacks winger was Vatuvei’s childhood hero. News of Lomu’s death last week hit Vatuvei hard. “I will definitely be paying tribute to him after my tries in 2016, and I have also asked Jonah’s cousin if I can shave the number 11 into my eyebrows like Jonah used to,” Vatuvei said. - NZME

Logan pair set to soar Donna Logan has used the Listed Trevor Eagle Memorial as the platform to launch the careers of several stable stars so far and she’s hoping that’s no different today when she saddles Sultan Of Swing and Valley Girl in the Ellerslie three-year-old feature. The Ruakaka trainer has an enviable record in the 1500m setweights and penalties race over the past three years, having won the race with Rising Romance in 2012 and with Habibi the following year before producing Midnitemagicman to finish second to Tavy last year. Both Rising Romance and Habibi went on to become Group One Classic winners for Logan, while Midnitemagicman finished fifth in this year’s Gr.1 New Zealand Derby before he was sold to Hong Kong interests. “It’s not a race we really target or anything. “It just seems to be the way it

pans out,” Logan said. “It just fits into where we are with the horses we’ve got coming through.” Both Bachelor Duke gelding Sultan Of Swing and Mastercraftsman filly Valley Girl go into the race at their second start, having produced smart debut wins. No timescale on Russia return BY MITCH PHILLIPS The question of whether Russia will take part in next year’s Olympic Games was no clearer yesterday after IAAF president Sebastian Coe held a news conference dominated instead by his personal relationship with Nike. Russia was banned from athletics two weeks ago after a report by the independent commission of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) detailed systematic, state-sponsored doping and related corruption in the country that had “sabotaged” the 2012 Olympics. The Russian athletics federation said yesterday it would not appeal against the ban and would work closely with the governing IAAF and WADA to put measures in place that would lead to a reinstatement, but Coe was unable to give a timeframe. Coe spent most of the 40-minute news conference answering questions about his decision to cut his ties with sportswear company Nike and though the Russia situation was expected to be the main topic of the council meeting, he said it had only been “touched upon”. Athletics superpower Russia will definitely miss the world indoor championships in Portland, Oregon, in March but Coe would not be drawn on the country’s prospects of being allowed back in time for the August Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. “There is no deadline,” he said. “It is for the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) to decide the right and proper moment for the Russian federa-

tion and their clean athletes to get back into competition. “It is our instinct to get clean athletes back into competition but that is entirely predicated on the speed with which we can get our inspection team and the Russian federation to meet. “Only then, when we’re entirely satisfied that we have enacted the change that we want, will we welcome back the clean athletes.” Much of yesterday’s meeting was taken up with an agenda item entitled “integrity and governance” as the IAAF seeks to reform itself in the wake of criticism from WADA’s commission and against a background of Coe’s presidential predecessor Lamine Diack facing a French police investigation into doping-related corruption. The Council approved Coe’s new integrity unit which he said will look at anti-doping, the manipulation of sports competitions, age manipulations, allegiance switches and the behaviour and conduct of third parties and representatives. “The Council gave full approval for the integrity unit. We looked at an organisational restructure, radically altering the way the organisations works and how it connects to the rest of the athletics family,” Coe said. It was a first full meeting for Stephanie Hightower, the president of US Track and Field, and she pulled few punches in her assessment. “Our entire system has failed athletes,” she said. “All our council members are determined to rebuild trust amongst athletes and fans.” - Reuters

German driver Sebastian Vettel has declared himself pleased with his debut season in Ferrari as the Formula One campaign comes to a close with Sunday’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. “The season has exceeded our expectations. We had a fantastic year - just phenomenal,” Vettel said yesterday. Vettel is guaranteed to finish third in the standings behind Mercedes pair Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. The 28-year-old has been on the podium 13 times this season, winning three races for Ferrari after a disastrous 2014. - DPA

The dummy’s guide to the pink-ball cricket test Pink really is best

Research into developing the pink ball to first-class standard has been going on 10 years and, once it was determined pink was the best colour, there’s been seven years of testing and tinkering. No ball has been studied, tweaked and adapted more than the pink one. Other colours were tested, including orange - which produced a comet-like trail on television - and green, which apparently was a nogo for those with colour blindness. Testing in England included firing balls out of a cannon into a wall to test durability. Different cuts of leather were trialled, and colours of stitching, from black to green, to white and back to green. By coating the balls with a chemical, the colour could be enhanced. Kookaburra went through 16 shades of pink to get the most suitable tint. Compared with the red and white balls, “in terms of bounce, in terms of hardness, all of those characteristics and performances, there is no difference in the performance of the [pink] ball,” said Kookaburra

managing director Brett Elliott.

Hard to pick the seam

Spinners like the pink ball because batsmen find it hard to pick up the seam. If they can’t spot the seam clearly, it makes working out the revolutions on the ball difficult, therefore harder to play. They also feel the pink ball is easier to grip.

Help under lights

Among the imponderables about how the inaugural day-night test will play out, there is common consensus on one thing: the pink ball offers more help to the fast-medium bowlers under lights than during the day. In New Zealand’s two-day match against a Western Australian XI in Perth last weekend, both seam attacks were certainly more potent at night.

Easy to spot

Television viewers won’t have any issues spotting the ball. At Adelaide Oval, there may be problems for the naked eye as the ball leaves the bowler’s hand and reaches the batsman, once it is about 30-40 overs old. New, it’s fine. Also the ball shows up well running over the green outfield.

Square errors

Watch for fielding errors square of the wicket. The anecdotal evidence suggests the pink ball is harder to pick up coming off the bat flat and hard rather than an edge off a bat to slip or in the air to the outfield.

Tough times

The early overs with the new ball are likely to be critical. Once the shine has gone from the ball, on a pitch long renowned as the best batting strip in the country and against quality batsmen, the bowlers could be in for a tough few hours - before the twilight settles in.

Tactics to play a part

Expect fireworks when the second new ball is taken at night. There’s even been suggestions Brendon McCullum and Steve Smith may employ tactical innovations to give their bowlers a chance to bowl in the final session - even if it means declaring early.

Ace hates pink

Australian speed spearhead Mitchell Starc hates the pink ball, yet he’s been highly successful with it in Sheffield Shield cricket.

If it is closer to the white ball than the red, his record in the Australian domestic one-day competition this season was outstanding - six games, 26 wickets at 8.12 each. With 17 bowled, it suggests piercing accuracy and penetration; Australia’s pink ball ace, even if he’d rather be holding a red or white ball.

There’s the rub

The traditional method of retaining colour on a red ball, rubbing it on a trouser leg, won’t much help the pink ball keep its shine. It is harder to buff up. However, there’s a theory that seam bowlers can get assistance if they can get some heat into the ball. So expect to see plenty of vigorous rubbing - just for different reasons than the red ball.

Longer lasting

The red ball had to be changed constantly in both Brisbane and Perth. The initial indications are the pink balls last better. So many elements need to work in this test. Having far fewer trips to the middle for the fourth official with a box of replacement balls will be a good start. - NZME

Investment markets update Global Equity Markets Taking a look at equity markets, we saw declines over the last quarter although markets did finish on a stronger note. Factoring a lower growth outlook into future earnings expectations was a primary reason for declines in equity prices. The correction also reflected some profit-taking after a period of strong returns. The weakest performing equity market over the quarter was Hong Kong. This market was impacted by both Chinese equity market declines, as well as lower mainland China economic growth rates. The Japanese equity market also declined, impacted by weaker export data and expectations of the need for the Bank of Japan to implement further stimulatory measures.

Australian and NZ Equity Markets Australian equities continued the trend, with New Zealand dollar returns further impeded by the weakness in the Australian dollar. Energy companies led the declines, with lower oil prices continuing to weigh on their earnings outlook and projects being written down in value. Margin com-

increases in interest rates. However, with these factors already well known, the scope for longer-term interest rates to fall materially is limited (outside the impact of any global shock). An increase in international corporate bond issuance, along with greater risk aversion, has led to higher ‘spreads’ on corporate bonds. We have not, as yet, seen that same widening in corporate spreads in New Zealand, although there are signs the market may be moving in that direction. This is a trend which investors need to consider as issuance picks up in New Zealand. On that note, BNZ have recently announced a new Fixed Interest issue seeking up to $300 million, with an indicative rate of over 5 per cent for the initial five year term. After opening earlier and earlier on the holiday, this year, most of the major retailers like Macy’s, Target and Kohl’s opened around the same time they did last year – about 5pm. One big exception: J.C. Penney, which opened two hours earlier at 3pm on the holiday. Staples has reversed course and will close on the holiday. Black Friday used to kick off the holiday shopping season, but now Thanksgiving Day is the new tradition for some shoppers. About an hour before the 6pm opening at Macy’s in New York’s Herald Square, about 100 people lined up. An hour and a half before the Toys R Us in New York’s Times Square opened at 5pm, about 40 people stood in line. And at the 24-hour Wal-Mart store in Naperville, Illinois, the aisles were clogged with people and carts by 6pm, when employees began pulling shrink wrap off palettes of merchandise to mark the official start of Black Friday deals. Holiday shoppers get a head start on Thanksgiving

Fonterra Co-operative Group, the world’s largest dairy exporter, has said the cost of its loan support package to farmers struggling with a low dairy payout will be $390 million. Speaking at the Fonterra Shareholders’ Fund annual meeting in Auckland yesterday, chief financial officer Lukas Paravicini reassured unit-holders that the loan package made no difference to shareholders’ dividends because it would be repaid over time. The loan is being funded from working capital after one-off savings from the co-operative’s transformation programme began last December and Paravicini said there was a $20 million lost opportunity cost from what the company could have saved on interest paid on its borrowings if it had used that money on further reducing debt instead. Some 76 per cent of the dairy giant’s 10,500 farmer suppliers have taken up the loan for an additional 50 cents per sharebacked kilogram of milksolids for production through to December. The board will decide next month whether to extend the package beyond December, depending

Schoolie spat A vicious fight that left a Gold Coast schoolie in an induced coma began with an argument over religion, a court has heard. An 18-year-old man was taken to hospital in the early hours of yesterday morning after being king-hit twice and then spat on during the alleged assault near the Schoolies hub at Surfers Paradise. While the victim has since woken from his coma and is in a stable condition, two NSW schoolies appeared in Southport Magistrates Court for their alleged role in the attack. - AAP

He added that Russia was ready to cooperate with other groups ready to fight IS. Russia has been Assad’s staunchest ally, and has come under criticism for targeting some rebel groups who are fighting against both IS and Assad in Syria’s multifaceted and complex civil war.

Obama, after meeting with Hollande, had said Russian cooperation in the fight against IS would be “enormously helpful.” The US has also insisted that a political transition in Syria must lead to Assad’s departure. “We view the US-led coalition with respect and stand ready to cooperate with it,” Putin said. “We believe that we would better create a single, united coalition as it would be easier, simpler and more efficient to coordinate our work that way.” However, he said, “if our partners aren’t ready for that, OK, we are ready to work in a different format that is acceptable to our partners. We are ready to cooperate with the US-led coalition.”

Last week, Hollande called for the US and Russia to set aside their policy divisions over Syria and “fight this terrorist army in a broad, single coalition.” But his office acknowledges that “coordination” sounds like a far more realistic goal. While pledging closer cooperation, Putin also harshly criticised Washington for failing to prevent the downing of a Russian warplane engaged in airstrikes in Syria by NATO member Turkey on Tuesday — an action which underscored the complex military landscape in Syria, where a sprawling cast of countries and rebel groups are engaged on the battlefield and in the skies overhead. - AP

Crowds of spectators watched the marching bands, floats and giant balloons of Macy’s annual Thanksgiving Day Parade, which was held without incident under tight security almost two weeks after deadly attacks in Paris. New York officials expected more than three million spectators to have lined the route for the city’s signature parade in its 89th year. They had urged residents and visitors to carry on with holiday plans, saying there were no credible threats to the US’ most populous city. President Barack Obama sought to reassure Americans they were safe to travel over the holiday. - AAP

Claims top $60m More than $61 million in insurance claims have already been lodged over the bushfire still burning north of Adelaide with the damage bill sure to go higher. Insurers have received more than 400 claims related to the blaze which has burnt through 82,600 hectares of cropping land, grass and scrub. It has destroyed 35 homes along with more than 160 other buildings and dozens of vehicles and pieces of farm machinery. Another 42 homes have been damaged while crop and stock losses are expected to be significant. On one farm more than 50,000 chickens were killed with other properties losing pigs and sheep. - AAP

Forest planned as MH17 memorial A forest is to be planted in a park close to Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport to commemorate the victims of downed flight MH17, including 38 Australians. The national monument will comprise 298 trees, one for each of the victims of the ill-fated flight, the MH17 Disaster Foundation said. “The next-of-kin have expressed the preference to place the national memorial in Vijfhuizen” near Schiphol, the foundation representing the victims’ families said. The families could vote for three locations with more than half preferring the park to other possible sites in The Hague and the southern Dutch city of Eindhoven. The trees will form a giant green ribbon, a symbol worn by the relatives to commemorate the July 17, 2014 disaster, with an amphitheatre at the centre.

Russia, France tighten ties The presidents of France and Russia have agreed to tighten co-operation in the fight against the Islamic State group, although they remained at odds over their approach toward Syrian President Bashar Assad. IS has claimed responsibility for deadly attacks against both of the countries’ citizens in recent weeks: November 13 shootings and suicide bombings in Paris which killed 130 people, and the October 31 bombing of a Russian passenger jet over Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula that claimed 224 lives. French President Francois Hollande has been on a diplomatic drive since the Paris attacks to increase cooperation in tackling IS, which holds swathes of territory in both Syria and Iraq. He has met this week with President Barak Obama, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi before flying to Moscow on Thursday for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Hollande and Putin agreed on increasing intelligence sharing, intensifying their airstrikes against IS in Syria and cooperating on selecting targets — two days after Turkey downed a Russian warplane near the Syrian border. “We agreed on a very important issue: To strike the terrorists only, Daesh and the jihadi groups only, and not to strike the forces and the groups that are fighting against the terrorists,” Hollande said after the meeting, referring to IS by its Arabic acronym. “And we are going to exchange some information about that: what can be struck, and what must not be struck.” But the two countries remain at odds in their approach toward Assad, with Hollande saying the

Solutions needed for social housing Sue Newman

he need for homes for people who struggle to find affordable accommodation continues to be the topic of the moment. Debate around the issue is almost constant in Auckland and Christchurch and there’s a perception that housing issues belong in the city. But ask anyone working in social needs areas in Ashburton and they’ll tell you the problem is just as significant here. The only difference is that no one outside Ashburton wants to know. Our problem, it appears, is across all ages, from young, single men through to the elderly who can’t afford their own home and struggle to pay market rentals, but are considered “too wealthy” for a council flat. There are plenty of social housing options available but each comes with a high cost and each requires careful management. That’s where the local groups trying to find solutions come unstuck. Because we’re considered not to have a problem, there is no money allocated to social housing in our district. And that means we have to come up with and fund our own solutions. The cross-agency group working to develop some form of social housing in Ashburton needs support and it needs a generous benefactor who’s prepared to invest in bricks and mortar without asking too much in return. If such a person or organisation could be found, that’s just half of the problem solved. The key to its success would be the way it was managed. While accommodation for younger people and families would ideally be in stand-alone units, when it comes to the elderly there’s a tried, tested and highly successful scheme that could be mirrored easily in Ashburton. It’s flatting for the over 60s. A large, multi-bedroomed house that offers independent living with the bonus of a housekeeper on tap. The scheme is run by the Abbeyfield charity, but it could be adapted on a smaller scale and run by a private enterprise utilising existing larger homes. And it could be the way of the future for groups of ageing friends who want to retain their independence but have the advantage of companionship on tap.

eing a Kiwi living in Aussie can sometimes be hard work. People are constantly telling you how much they love those “fush and chups,” bragging about the cricket, and asking whether you know the words to the “beached as” whale sketch (a parody of the Kiwi accent, created by a couple of our friendly neighbours). Then there are the more serious challenges, such as getting on the road to citizenship. And then – possibly even more of a challenge – having to explain to your parents back home why you would ever want to do such a thing. The Australian senator Ian MacDonald recently offered a solution to all of these woes,

proposing that New Zealand should just “join us perhaps as the seventh and eighth state”. We could hear the resounding lack of enthusiasm from the Kiwi side quite clearly, even from 3000km away. In fact, MacDonald is not the first to moot the possibility. New Zealand was in fact a dependency of New South Wales from 1840-41, and declined the opportunity to join Australia’s

federation some 60 years later, in 1901. Why suggest it again now? Perhaps it is our local flag debate that has put the country on the foreign radar again – how could anyone ignore the ‘fire the lazar’ Kiwi design? Sure, those Aussies are somewhat jealous of our hobbit landscapes, lack of snakes, and flag designing skills. They could probably do with a few more of our homegrown players on their footy pitches, too (we won’t rub that one in). Yet proposing integrating our rugged islands at the ends of the earth into the seventh and eighth states of Australia is going more than a step too far. “G’Day Bro” just doesn’t have the same ring to it as either of

M onday is a day of great importance to me because it is St Andrew’s Day, Patron Saint of Scotland, and I worship at St Andrew’s and my mother was a Campbell. As a person of Scottish descent there are some things that identify Scots – hard work, perseverance, courage and a strong faith. Many people grew up in an age where you worked hard and worked hard from a young age. You had chores to do both before and after school. You not only worked from a young age but also you were not blessed to have all the modern conveniences we use today. And while like some young people today, you may have grumbled about having to do the work, but you did it. I often notice when someone turns 100 or celebrates a golden wedding anniversary or similar

that when asked the secret to this longevity the one thing most often mentioned is hard work. The Scots are people who persevere. For me perseverance is about continuing on when the going gets tough. Before he died, Robert the Bruce requested that his heart should be removed and then carried in battle “against God’s foes”. His heart was carried into battle and it was thrown by one of his men well out ahead of them towards the enemy. It was tough going in battle (especially, if they were having to fight in kilts as some did) and so they fought with determination and perseverance in order

to not only defeat the enemy but also retrieve their beloved leader Robert the Bruce’s heart. Each time they retrieved it, it was thrown out in front of them and again they would strive to retrieve it. Many of us have had to continue when the going is tough. It could have been any number of tough things you had to endure – physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, emotional or psychological toughness. It’s about facing whatever life throws at you with a determination that you will get through it and come out the other end a stronger and better person for it. When those first Scots left Scotland and sailed for the other side of the world and landed in Port Chalmers they did so with a lot of courage. When we are placed into unfamiliar surroundings it takes

courage to face and cope. It must have taken so much courage for those early Scots to pack up their family, to leave their family and friends, their familiar surroundings and step onto the boat not knowing what was ahead of them and before they even arrived in their new land they had to survive the boat trip. Courage is stepping out into the unknown. It’s about taking a risk regardless of how big or small that risk is. The good thing is as we step out we don’t do it alone, we do it with the reassuring presence of the Good Presence - God. You could say we step out in faith. The following activities are permitted during the restricted fire season: 1. Barbecues lit in properly constructed containers and fuelled with gas, solid or liquid fuel. 2. Cooking fires at camp sites lit within a concrete or stone surround and with no less than 3 metres of clear ground surrounding the container. 3. Crop residue burns are covered by a separate authority and do not require a permit provided the following conditions are complied with: a. The Department of Conservation Eastern South Island ‘Fire permit (and authority) statutory provisions and guidelines for crop residue burning’ is adhered to. b. Fires must not be lit, or allowed to burn after dark. c. There must be a continuous non-combustible firebreak, of not less than 5 metres, around the area to be burnt. d. No fire is to be lit while a strong wind is blowing or when conditions are such that the fire is likely to spread beyond the area for which the authority was issued. Strong wind means a wind strength of 19 km/hr (Beaufort 3). e. The person responsible for the fire must: i. Obtain a weather forecast (NZ Met Service, 0900 999 25, Canterbury Plains, or 0900 999 26, Canterbury High Country), prior to lighting the fire. ii. Notify occupiers of neighbouring properties likely to be affected by smoke drift. iii. The fire must be monitor and patrol the fire until it is completely out.
