A retired logging contractor went from being almost locked up in cells at the Ashburton District Court yesterday to being cleared of any wrongdoing.

Ernie Walker was charged with receiving after being caught in possession of a stolen jet boat and trailer on April 6.

The boat’s owner Simon Hampton, a farmer at Rakaia, told the court that at first he couldn’t believe it when he no-

ticed the boat and trailer, worth more than $20,000, missing from a shed on his property that morning.

He was the first witness called into the defended hearing, presided over by Judge Joanna Maze. Hampton said news of the theft, with a photo, quickly went up on Facebook, and later in the day he received a phone call to say the boat and trailer had been found.

No cell time and Ernie’s cleared From P1 Walker continued on his journey north as he had a truck full of frozen meat for his mother’s unveiling, and had to catch a ferry on his way back to his home in Rotorua.

He told them police could catch up with him on the way, and later that day when questioned he told the same story to police as he had to O’Carroll and Stackhouse, that he had paid $8000 for the boat earlier that day.

The seller knew he was looking for a boat and had turned up with it to Walker’s son’s house at Rakaia, where he was staying.

The trailer had no registration so he attached a new one he owned.

He persisted in not giving the name of the seller when pressed by police at the time, and also in the courtroom yesterday, saying that would not help him get his money back from the man.

This almost saw him locked up, when prosecution lawyer Anselm Williams persisted “What’s his name?”

“Pass,” Walker said.

“What do you mean ‘pass’? You are here under oath, I have asked you a question which is directly relevant to these proceedings,” Williams said.

Her Honour told the defendant she could hold him in custody if he did not answer questions.

But he stuck firm, saying $8000 was too much money to lose.

Later in questioning Williams

came back to the subject once again, and told the judge he wished to pursue it.

However Judge Maze said she would not detain the defendant because the question of the name of the seller related to whether or not the person who stole the boat would be charged, not whether or not Walker would be charged.

“You will not see the inside of a cell in the Ashburton District Court,” she told the defendant.

And later after summing up, she dismissed the charge.

“The prosecution has not displaced the reasonable possibility that this man is being truthful,” she said.

Among evidence in his favour was no further information from police about a finger print they said they found at the scene, suggesting it was not a match to the defendant.

Walker praised the judge as being “sharp” after leaving the court, and said he was relieved to be able to clear his reputation.

“I have had a lot of customers here over the years,” he said.

He said he had copped a lot of abuse on Facebook after being charged, with many accusing him of not only receiving but of having stolen the boat. But in Rotorua they called him The Honest Ern and he liked to help a lot of people with supplying good quality firewood, and selling machinery and other items at good prices to help people out.

Jumping for a good cause It’s not every day you throw yourself out of a plane but for Tinwald’s George Crack on Saturday, it was a chance to help the Cancer Society.

George was taking part in Jump for Cancer, an event that rewards those who raise more than $800 for the cause with the opportunity to jump with Skydiving Kiwis.

For 88-year-old George it wasn’t the first time he’d been skydiving, having tried out the

experience three years ago, but he enjoyed giving it another go, especially as it was a way of raising money for the Cancer Society.

“It was good fun and a good experience and for a great cause,” he said.

George was also pleased with the support he got from the ground at Ashburton Airport. “It was nice to have the guys here from the Menz Shed and the Citizens Association, and my family.”

It’s more than likely George will be back for a third jump in the future. When he made his first one three years ago he was Skydiving Kiwis’ oldest customer.

However, a 90-year-old woman from Christchurch now holds that honour, although George has his eye on reclaiming the record. “I’ve got 21 months to go until the next one when I am 90, but we will just have to see how things go,” he said.

Methven boatie still missing Searchers looking for missing Methven man George Agnew failed to find any sign of him yesterday.

Agnew, 66, who was reported missing by his family on Saturday after failing to return home from a camping trip, hasn’t been heard from since around lunchtime last Tuesday, when he made

contact with his family.

It is believed he had been camping in the Haldon Arm Reserve on the edge of Lake Benmore, and his 25-foot-yacht, Solar Heat, was found abandoned the lake on Saturday.

Search and rescue teams, Coastguard boats, volunteers, family

and friends searched the lake and shoreline on Saturday and Sunday, and returned to the area yesterday to no avail.

Although searchers covered the entire lake, particular attention was paid to the area between the Haldon camping ground and the Ohau B hydro station.

To help with the search, Bridget De Goldi, a friend of Agnew’s daughter Kimberley Taylor Coleman, set up a Givealittle page on Sunday evening to reimburse Agnew’s family members who had paid for helicopters to take part in the search. By 7pm yesterday, $9885 had been raised to go to-

wards search efforts.

Friends of Agnew also took to his Facebook page, expressing their shock and concern over his disappearance, along with sending messages of love and support to his family, while messages of support also appeared on the Guardian Facebook page.

100 happy birthdays for Ashburton’s newest centenarian

It’s no easy feat to look back on life without a single regret. Remarkably so if you’ve got a full 100 years to reflect on.

But that’s certainly not the case for Ashburton’s newest centenarian, Phyllis Spicer, who ticks off her happy hundredth birthday today.

“If I was given the opportunity to have my time over, I wouldn’t do anything differently,” she said.

“I have a lovely family and I have lovely children and I’m very grateful.”

As the eldest resident of Terrace View in 2013, Spicer was tasked with snipping the ribbon to open the retirement village. Last week it was time for the retirement village to celebrate the milestone of Spicer’s own, as family and friends amassed for early birthday festivities.

Cake, cards and flowers featured in what Spicer said was a “lovely time”, along with a speech from the birthday girl herself.

“I’ve never been 100 before and I’ve never made a speech before, so this is all new to me,” she said.

When quizzed on the magical secret to longevity, Spicer said she still had no idea.

“I haven’t done anything special,” she said, “I guess I’m never one to get uptight about things … but I didn’t expect to be a hundred.”

However, the reserved born and bred Mid Cantabrian said her century has been filled with good stories.

“I have a lot of happy memories … and it would probably take me another 100 years to tell them all,” she laughed.

Methven could have hot pools by 2019

A new company in the process of taking over Methven hot pools has an ambitious goal to design and build the pools by winter 2019.

Methven Adventures Limited is directed by Mt Hutt Ski Area manager James McKenzie, Ashburton insurance broker Andrew Cartwright and Sydney entrepreneur Lloyd Robinson.

The three are current shareholders of Methven Hot Pools Holdings Limited, the company which has already obtained resource consent for the project to go on land at Mt Harding Racecourse, and has undertaken demand analyses and a feasibility study.

Methven Adventures Limited has gone on to do further work around the brand and concept for the hot pools, and has named the project Opuke Thermal Pools and Spa. McKenzie said yesterday it was a project the new company believed in strongly.

“I think it has a huge amount of potential,” McKenzie said.

How to heat the pools and where to source water from had been chief considerations, and it had been important they sat well with sustainable development.

The plan is to use solar heating, backed by geothermal heat pumps using natural ground heating sources. The small amount of water needed could be sourced

from the Rangitata Diversion Race, fed by glacial flow into the Rangitata River.

The task is now to raise $10 million minimum, and an investment summary has gone live on the Methven Adventures website.

Minimum investments of $100,000, with further investment parcels of $50,000, are sought. Expressions of interest are due by December 20.

A summary of where the hot pools project is heading will be among topics at a public meeting in Methven tonight, 7pm in the Mount Hutt Memorial Hall. Experience Mid Canterbury and Mt Hutt Ski Area will also inform on how winter 2017 went, and plans for next year.

Blue plaques reveal local history

It plays a key role in Ashburton’s heritage, but for many years, that role has gone largely unnoticed – quite literally, trod underfoot.

Now, thanks to Historic Places Mid Canterbury, the Ashburton Railway Footbridge has a shiny new adornment to celebrate its centenary.

A crowd gathered at the East Street side of the 25.6m structure on Friday to see the first of the district’s blue plaques unveiled beside it, and to commemorate 100 years of safe passage between East and West streets.

Historic Places Mid Canterbury chairwoman Julie Luxton said the group were pleased with the number of people who came along to celebrate the milestone.

“It is a great example of heritage that tells a story about our past and will continue to serve a useful purpose well into the future,” she said.

The bridge, which was constructed from recycled railway irons and sleepers, has seen the evolution of railway in Ashburton, from an era where railways were New Zealand’s dominating means of transport to today.

It originally accompanied a large railway station, which was demolished in mid 2013, and replaced a smaller, timber footbridge that was moved to Aitken Street in 1918, then demolished in 1974.

Around the time it was built, the railway line in Ashburton was the eighth busiest in the country, railway was one of the biggest employers in the district and the refresh-

ment rooms at the Ashburton railway station recorded the fourth highest number of visitors through the door.

Now, following the cessation of passenger traffic in 1990, the bridge is the only remaining feature of the original complex, and one of the only remaining footbridge structures of its era across New Zealand.

The only surviving example that exceeds it in length is the 29.5 metre Dunedin pedestrian overbridge.

In an Ashburton District Council heritage report about Ashburton Railway Footbridge, it is praised for reflecting the “technical accomplishment” of its engineers.

“They prepared standard designs, which could be adapted for use in various locations, using mass-produced components efficiently and economically. The practicality and effectiveness of these designs is demonstrated by their wide and sustained use. Its location gives it a prominence in the town and the aesthetic qualities of the graceful central span can be widely seen.”

Under the Ashburton District Council, the bridge is recognised as a Category A (high value) heritage structure. It is also a Heritage New Zealand Category 2 site ie: “historic places are of historical or cultural significance or value”.

Historic Places Mid Canterbury deputy chairperson Nigel Gilkison said he hoped the new plaque would raise the profile of the bridge and acknowledge our town’s pride in it, as a part of our history.

The plaque can be found on the East Street side of the bridge.

Mid Canterbury talent showcased at pottery expo

A bounty of creations from skilled Ashburton potters is luring the throngs to Emmily Harmer Photography studio.

Hakatere Ceramics & Pottery launched their second annual exhibition last Thursday, showcasing and selling work from their 26 club members and guest artist Jane McCulla.

Mick Hydes of Hakatere Ceramics said the event had proved even more success-

ful than last year’s, with good sales, positive remarks and a number of people interested in joining the club.

“The feedback’s been that last years was good, but this year’s is even better,” he said.

“I guess our clubs grown in numbers and the work’s improved.”

Around 80 people packed into the opening night last Thursday to see awards dished out to the top artists.

Hydes himself took home title of Premiere Winner and Open Wheel Work win-

ner, while Sanae Hydes was named Open Hand Work Winner.

Taking home Novice Wheel Work Winner for 2017 was Mark Rant, and Jane Rant claimed Novice Hand Work Winner.

Hydes said lucky tickets were also being handed out at the exhibition, with the group giving away a number of physical prizes and lessons in ceramics and pottery.

The exhibition is open for four more days at 179 West Street, until midday on Friday.

Earthquake warning for NZ A New Zealand scientist has warned that a previously dormant fault could generate “megathrust” earthquakes of up to magnitude 9.0 in the Pacific country and trigger giant tsunamis.

“We need to think Japan 2011 basically, because, if our whole plate boundary ruptured it would be a magnitude-9 earthquake,” geologist Ursula Cochran of the Earth and geoscience research company GNS Science, told the Marlborough Express in a report published yesterday.

The Hikurangi plate boundary, located off the East Coast of New Zealand’s North Island, is where the Pacific tectonic plate dives underneath the Australian tectonic plate.

The so-called subduction zone had been thought dormant before the 7.8 tremor near Kaikoura in November 2016.

“One thing about reflecting on from the Kaikoura earthquake is we don’t want people to think this is the big one,” Cochran said.

Subduction zones are a type of fault and are responsible for the most destructive earthquakes and tsunamis in the world, such as Sumatra in 2004, Chile in 2010, and Japan in 2011.

Police have found the body of the 57-year-old man who went missing after he was caught in the current of a West Coast river.

The Police National Dive Squad found the body in the Buller River, Westport yesterday morning. The man was reported missing on Saturday evening while swimming at the junction of the Buller and Ohikanui Rivers. The death will be referred to the coroner.

The best possible chance to make a success with a hand up through subsidised rental prices and long-term vision (this is not a five-minute job).

River award sends right message

armers and those associated with the irrigation industry were given something to smile about late last week.

On Thursday night the Pahau River in north Canterbury was named the Most Improved River in New Zealand, top prize at the New Zealand River Awards.

On the surface of it that might not sound that great an achievement, but the Pahau is in an area known for both dairying and irrigation, concepts that are the antithesis of decent water if you believed everything you heard during the election campaign a couple of months ago.

Yet it seems the three can coexist, although it should be said that it takes foresight, hard work and a willingness to work together, if that’s going to happen.

The New Zealand River Awards are designed to celebrate improvement in river water quality and each year rivers are judged on one of four key water quality indicators, with this year’s being E.coli.

Statistical analysis of data from Land Air Water Aotearoa, one of the country’s largest environmental online data platforms, showed that during the past 10 years there has been a 15.6 per cent year-on-year trend reduction in E.coli levels at monitoring sites along the river.

There are a number of reasons for that.

Cawthron Institute chairman Morgan Williams noted that better farm management practices in response to tighter nutrient rules imposed by regional councils, along with a commitment to riparian fencing and planting, have helped river water quality around the country in terms of E.coli and the Pahau was no exception.

However, he also recognised the importance of farmers switching to more efficient irrigation systems, and the efforts of schemes such as Amuri Irrigation to promote efficiencies to farmers.

As mentioned earlier, it’s been a partnership and, as with any partnership, it’s involved a bit of give and take to get the best outcome.

But as this award shows, it’s been worth it.

It’s the sort of story that farmers and irrigators need to spread far and wide, to demonstrate to the general public that the rural community does care about water quality and it is doing something about it.

T

he red meat sector is enjoying the best start to a season for years.

Sheep and lamb prices are significantly higher than we’ve been used to of late, beef prices are near the highs of last season and venison is at record levels.

These prices better reflect the actual cost of production and give some confidence to farmers who have been struggling with tough seasons and low returns for far too long.

The result of the depressed sheep industry has been smaller flocks as farmers have shifted from sheep production to alternate farming systems – beef,

arable, dairy, dairy grazing, etc.

This has had a knock-on effect on downstream jobs in the shearing and freezing industries, which are significant employers in the provinces.

So it’s quite a relief to finally have some good news coming from an industry that has had very little to be positive about for so long.

The wool industry can be described as one of contrasts – fine and medium wools are selling well and receiving excellent prices. The reverse is true for crossbred wool. It’s not selling well and what does sell is receiving record low prices.

If crossbred wool was returning more realistic value to growers then the sheep industry in New Zealand would expand.

Crossbred wool has suffered from a lack of generic promotion and in the markets that we sell into, too many consumers aren’t fully aware of the myriad

qualities and end-uses that wool possesses.

This is an issue that the industry as a whole needs to address and there are moves afoot to rectify this problem.

After a relatively wet year for large parts of the country it seems the tap has been turned off and many are looking for rain.

South Otago, Central Otago and the MacKenzie Basin have been dry through the winter and spring and need rain now.

All the coastal rivers have had good flows this year and it is only in the last month that volumes have dropped.

While travelling to Christchurch last week I noticed that there was still some water flowing in the Selwyn river at the main road.

Over the past six months the river has been constantly flowing at the main road, which makes it the longest period I can remember in my lifetime.

It’s amazing what regular rainfall can do!

The A&P show season has kicked off and it is certainly worthwhile making the effort to attend one – and by that I mean townies and rural folk.

It is always a positive experience because these A&P events are a great showcase for the rural Kiwi lifestyle, with a range of animals and technologies on offer, plus a chance to interact with the dedicated people that display them.

You might learn something – I always do.

Nukes cause killer quakes Dozens were killed when North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un’s most powerful nuclear missile test yet caused buildings to collapse.

Houses and a school near his nuclear base at Punggye-ri were brought down when his tests caused a 6.3 magnitude earthquake injuring up to 150 pupils in North Hamgyong Province.

The explosion triggered aftershocks within eight minutes, hitting structures in a nearby village, the Daily Mail reports.

News of the deaths emerged yesteerday after there were three more shocks following the underground test back in September, according to the Sunday Express.

The fatalities were revealed by a defector group called South and North Development.

The Kim regime is accused of not warning locals of the nuclear test as children were in classrooms as usual during the quake, which also hit nearby farms.

Soldiers suffering from radiation sickness are also flooding the country’s hospitals after the test, according to reports.

The government instructed farmers affected to harvest crops rather than repair damage caused, according to a source.

Glee star arrested Naya Rivera has been arrested for misdemeanour domestic battery.

The 30-year-old actress has reportedly been charged with the criminal offence after she was allegedly involved in an altercation with her husband Ryan Dorsey on Saturday evening in Kanawha County, West Virginia. PEOPLE magazine has reported that Naya has been accused of striking the Blood actor over the head and in the mouth during a walk with their two-year-old son Josey in Chesapeake over the weekend. And Ryan is believed to have video footage of the incident on camera.

Bulger’s father demands killer be identified The father of murdered toddler James Bulger is calling for an up-to-date picture of his son’s killer to be shown to the world.

Ralph Bulger said he wants Jon Venables to be stripped of

anonymity after he was discovered with child-abuse images on his computer and jailed.

Bulger said that Venables, who is 35, should be given an adult life sentence for his part in the horrific murder of his

two-year-old son 24 years ago.

The furious father slammed a decision to spend £5m on rehabilitation and protecting Venables’ true identity and his co-killer’s, Robert Thompson.

“If people saw a photo of

him as the adult monster he truly is they would have a very different perception of the person committing the crimes instead of a picture of so-called childhood innocence,” Bulger told The Sunday People. - PA

Press Box ‘delayed’ The debut of a new sports show by Sky TV has reportedly been delayed after controversy over the inclusion of Tony Veitch.

Veitch pulled out of the new panel show, called New Zealand Press Box and hosted

by Bernadine Oliver-Kerby, following an outcry over his inclusion. It was due to debut in two days, but Radio Sport presenter Martin Devlin, who was also involved with the show, said Press Box would no longer debut on Wednesday. Veitch had referred on his Facebook page to the show as being a “hard-hitting, opinion-led show that does not shy away from controversy”. Veitch was convicted of injuring his former girlfriend Kristin Dunne-Powell with reckless disregard in 2009.

Immigration New Zealand emailed Pandit a letter to advise that it had received information that he was no longer employed and intended to cancel his visa.

His visa was cancelled as he was no longer employed by Swamy.

Following the cancellation of his work visa Pandit could not return to New Zealand and Immigration New Zealand posted a border alert to stop him checking into New Zealand bound flights.

Facebook fraud on the rise Fraudsters can not only glean reams of valuable personal data from what users post on their Facebook pages; if they can actually hack a Facebook account where users have stored their payment details, they can steal substantial sums.

In what could be viewed as a weakness in Facebook’s systems, once you use the site to make a purchase you’re unlikely to be asked for subsequent authorisation – or be notified by your bank or Facebook.

UK man Jasbir Mann discovered that more than 100 fraudulent payments, adding up to almost £12,000 ($23,250), had been made to an online gambling game using his Facebook account.

Mann, who runs his own yoga studio in Warwickshire, said he kept his debit card details stored on Facebook as he occasionally paid to advertise his business on the social media site.

The adverts usually cost about £30 ($NZ58). But between September 26 and 28 he was horrified to view 110 transactions, ranging between £21 ($41) and £215 ($416), made to an online poker game site he had never used.

“Aside from the occasional lottery ticket I don’t gamble and do not know how to play poker,” he said.

He immediately contacted his bank, Barclays, which cancelled his card and told him to remove his details from Facebook.

Facebook began refunding

some of the transactions, paying £5747 ($11,100) of the stolen £11,878 ($23,000) back in 30 tranches on September 28.

But then the refunds mysteriously stopped.

Mann, 45, checked his Facebook account and saw – in the “Payments history” section within “Settings” – 110 transactions that matched the fraudulent payments.

He raised a dispute with the social media giant. Moments later the entire history disappeared, he claimed.

Mann said he received a couple of messages from Facebook asking for him to submit further details using the generic link it included. But he said it didn’t work.

An Auckland restaurant chef has been paid $33,465 for being unjustly dismissed.

Babu Pandit, a former chef for Indian restaurant chain Satya, received $18,465 in lost wages and $15,000 in compensation for being humiliated by his former employer Akuthota Jwala Narsimha Swamy.

The Employment Relations Authority (ERA) found Pandit to have had his job unfairly terminated and his work visa cancelled by Immigration New Zealand while he was out of the country on leave.

Swamy, the owner of Auckland Satya restaurants, recruited Pandit from his home city Hyderabad, India, in 2012.

Pandit worked at Satya in Mount

Eden from April 2013 to September 2016, employed under the terms of three work visas, and earning $26,152 per year.

By arrangement, Pandit left the country in September last year for an extended period of leave to India and was planning to bring his wife and children to New Zealand on his return.

This plan did not go ahead as Immigration New Zealand cancelled his visa in November on the basis of two emails and a letter sent by employer Swamy.

In the letter Swamy claimed Pandit had disguised a diagnosis of diabetes and manipulated his medical condition by taking medication during the process of his application for his most recent work visa, the decision said.

Chef wins $33k for unfair dismissal

The Prime Minister’s chief science adviser Peter Gluckman has said there is a growing consumer appetite around the world for synthetic alternatives to meat and milk, which poses an “existential threat” to the country’s economic fortunes.

Earlier this week, Rabobank said alternative proteins are on the

Beef + Lamb New Zealand is carrying out consumer research into alternative proteins in China and San Francisco in response to the rise of the rival products and wants to report back to the sector before the end of the year.

“What we have discovered is that for better or worse alternative protein is here. We are not seeing it as a replacement for now, but we are definitely seeing it as an alternative for certain types of consumers.

The consumer research that we doing is to understand who those consumers are and what’s driving that behaviour,” Damien Cullinan, market innovation manager for Beef + Lamb, told BusinessDesk.

The industry lobby group launched a project in August to understand the production technologies, business models and products, and how consumers are responding along with the threats and opportunities posed by plantbased, lab-grown and insect proteins.

It is trying to separate the “hype from the reality” and “we are going hammer and tongs” to present an internal report within the next four

Cullinan said Beef + Lamb is not downplaying the opportunities or challenges to the industry: “We are not burying our heads in the sand and saying there is nothing we can do about it,” he said.

“This is definitely something we have been taking seriously for a while and we have a very robust process ... we are quite excited about what we are seeing. There is an opportunity for the industry,” he said.

Among other things, he noted plant-based synthetic foods rely on genetically modified ingredients to enhance the taste and texture and that is something New Zealand – and consumers around the world – need to be aware of.

“People are making a bit of a trade-off. If they have decided for whatever reason they don’t want product A, product B is not product A but it has got some other stuff they may be unaware of,” he said.

Against that backdrop, New Zealand’s natural and grass-fed based farming system remains competitive.

Plate to Pasture award winners host field day

Chris and Anne-Marie Allen hosted a crowd of about 70 at a Silver Fern Farms (SFF) Plate to Pasture field day at their Ashburton Forks property last Thursday.

The Allens, who were the Plate to Pasture winners for 2016, produce about 3500 lambs annually, which they supply to SFF. Their 360-hectare property also carries 350 R1 and 350 R2 cattle through to finishing.

Those at the field day, including Leicester and Margaret Gray, representing the 2017 Plate to Pasture winners Gray Brothers from central Hawkes Bay, heard the Allens talk about their property, goals and business focus, along with their experiences as part of a Plate to Pasture European tour earlier this year.

A key part of their business is understanding consumers and markets, and their continued work in that area was behind their success in last year’s awards.

Following the couple’s presentation, those at the field day were given a tour of the property, with the Allens providing a running commentary on how the farm is managed, along with insights into some of the day-to-day challenges they face.

■ PREDATOR FREE FARM AWARD

Predator-free efforts recognised Farmers will be recognised for their part in the nationwide movement of Predator Free New Zealand when a new Predator Free Farm Award will be presented next year as part of the Ballance Farm Environment Awards.

Sponsored by Predator Free NZ Trust and the New Zealand Farm Environment Trust, the new award will acknowledge the efforts of farmers who have put in place systems to effectively manage and monitor predators including possums, rats, feral cats, ferrets, weasels and stoats.

The award will be given to farmers who have been successful in controlling predators and are likely to have wider native biodiversity and habitat enhancement programmes in place.

Chairman of Predator Free NZ Trust, Sir Rob Fenwick, said “farmers manage a significant proportion of the New Zealand landscape so they are vital in the drive to make New Zealand predator free.

“We know many farmers who have been involved in significant predator control programmes on their land for many years.

“More and more are seeing the brand value and property enhancement by predator eradication on their properties.

“This award celebrates those already doing great work and will hopefully inspire more people to get involved.”

Ashburton’s Joanne van Polanen, chairwoman of the New Zealand Farm Environment Trust, is thrilled to have developed a partnership with Predator Free NZ Trust.

“For many farmers and growers, managing pests is part and parcel

of being effective stewards of the land.

“Farmers are actively involved in a raft of initiatives to support native biodiversity development including by taking measures to reduce populations of possums, rats, feral cats, ferrets, weasels and stoats”.

“Enhancing our native biodiversity by getting rid of animal predators is a vision that all New Zealanders can get behind. It is important both environmentally and economically.

“Farmers are great innovators.

Increasingly we are finding that farmers are involved in a range of creative initiatives to manage predator populations, including making use of new technology.

“Acknowledging their efforts, and sharing knowledge about actions that are effective, is essential for achieving the ambition to rid New Zealand of animal predators”.

Farms throughout New Zealand are currently being considered for the Predator Free Farm Award and winners will be announced at a series of regional awards dinners commencing early 2018.

MARKET REPORT Dairy Another week without rain in the province has farmers talking about how dry it is even after the wet winter and lack of nor’west winds.

Some dairy farms are still topping up the pasture with supplements of silage, grain and palm kernel and expressing concerns on how dryland winter brassica crops will strike with the present low soil moisture levels.

ECan South Canterbury has warned farmers to prepare for irrigation restrictions, even though the Opuha dam is near capacity.

Last week’s auction did nothing for market confidence to return the fourth fall in a row and, once again, build the pressure of a reduced milk forecast from Fonterra in December.

In a firming dairy derivative market these falls go against the trend, but the volumes of global milk flows, at present, seem to be the dampener to steadying the pricing ship.

Dairy NZ has launched a new industry strategy and promises to be more transparent with industry issues, while Fonterra’s new emission targets have been branded weak by climate change critics.

Synlait has opened its North Island canning plant amid optimism for its product direction and A2Milk shares surged again on its double profit growth.

Westland is heralding its turnaround, with improved plant efficiency lifting the volumes of processed milk out of the Hokitika plant.

Lamb More small indications that schedules have peaked in the lamb market as dry conditions are lifting animals being processed and the Christmas chilled market has come to an end.

The frozen trade resumes and processors are now focused on meeting demand for the Chinese New Year celebrations for both lamb and mutton.

Silver Fern Farms reports the chilled meat trial to China continues, with the cold chain assessment vital if this new market is to be opened successfully in the future.

Mutton schedules also eased this week but demand remains strong with saleyard reports of quality old ewes selling for over $200/head.

farmers will agree this is a worthwhile market exploration, as this aged meat is often chosen first for their own home kill.

Wool Another auction in the North Island last week, saw prices on the improve again, especially for finer hogget wools and the small quantity of finer lambs’ wool sold.

Serves 4

■ Preheat oven to 160°C. Heat tortillas in a microwave for 20 seconds or wrap in tinfoil and place into the oven for 5 minutes to soften. Mould them into 8 large

4 3 muffin tins to form a cup. Place into the oven for 15-20 minutes or until they hold their shape. If they are browning around the edges cover with tinfoil.

■ Heat 1T oil in a frying pan until hot. Add onion and garlic and cook for 2 or 3 minutes. Add mince and cook for 10 minutes, until browned and cooked through.

■ Add taco seasoning, oregano and 3/4 C water and cook for a further 5 minutes until thickened. Stir through the borlotti beans.

■ Place mixture into the tortilla cups and sprinkle with cheese.

Return to oven for 5-8 minutes until the cheese has melted.

■ In a bowl mix the cabbage and carrot. Season with salt and pepper. Mix remaining oil, vinegar, mustard and brown sugar in a small jar and shake. Dress the salad.

■ Remove cups from the oven, garnish with coriander, serve hot with sour cream and salad.

100 years of Ashburton’s overbridge

eople walking over Ashburton’s railway overbridge might notice a new blue plaque was unveiled last Friday to commemorate that structure’s 100th birthday.

The present bridge replaced a 1911 one, which was located slightly further down the line, and built in connection with the first railway station. With the erection of a new station (demolished in 2013) a new bridge was needed to ensure pedestrians continued to have a safe way to cross the then very busy railway lines.

The bridge once had three exits, but one on the East Street side was removed in 1983. The main components are metal and imported jarrah wood.

Although locals may take the bridge for granted, or see it as a poignant reminder of the lost railway station, it is a significant structure in its own right.

Even with just the two exits remaining, it is still an imposing structure.

It is one of seven of the last remaining bow string truss bridges left in the country, which is of interest in itself. More than that, however, is the fact that, of the seven, it is the second largest – with Dunedin claiming the title by 13 feet.

We hope these images will inspire readers to appreciate and take time to walk over one of the oldest public structures in our town and admire not only the plaque, but the detail of this his-

Honouring the Fallen During the period of World War One, 1914 to 1915, many men from the Ashburton District signed up to fight for the Empire against the German army. Many did not return — almost 450 from Ashburton were killed. The first Ashburton men were killed on April 25, 1915 — the first Anzac Day. Ashburton philanthropist and patriot Frederick Ferriman presented a special flag and a flagpole to the families of those men. The Ashburton Museum, with the assistance of the Rotary Club of Ashburton, has erected in front of the museum one of the original Ferriman flagpoles, and on the centennial of the death of each Ashburton soldier will fly a replica flag. An original flag is on display in the museum. The Tinwald Cycling Club made their way west on Sunday for a 47km mass start race in Mount Somers.

Hands takes top honours The Tinwald Cycling Club travelled to Mount Somers to contest a 47km mass start race.

The event took in the lowland hills from the Mount Somers township to the historic Hakatere Station huts and return.

Steve Hands, along with Tony Ward, Wayne Clement and Sam Letham, managed to break away from the main body of the field, but it was Hands who had the better of a tight finish to claim line honours from Ward and Clement.

The group rode the distance in 69.52.

There was still plenty to race for back in the field, with sealed handicap honours up for grabs.

Sam Letham’s efforts of getting into the break and staying at the front of the race earned him the sealed handicap honours.

Great rides from the ever-improving Richard Kirwan saw him pick up the second-place spoils.

Hugh Copland, spurred on by his support team, claimed third place, while Neil Wylie, Marty

Cuttle and Paul Williams rounded out the top six.

The juniors and division 2 contested a 16km handicap event.

A good field of juniors, bolstered by a great bunch of young riders from Leeston, made for interesting racing. It was Tinwald rider Jack Templeton, however, who pulled out a superb ride to secure victory and in doing so also claimed third fastest time.

Paige Kiesanowski dug deep to keep the chasing riders at bay and take the second-place spoils.

Scratch marker Ashton Stainger produced an eye-catching ride to secure third place and lift fastest time honours riding the course in 31.28.

Damian Corbett stormed into fourth place, while Ashton’s younger brother Ethan Stainger, took fifth place and second time.

Toby Gollan rounded out the top six. Janette Hooper secured division 2 honours.

Next week the club will contest a 45km handicap event around the Grahams Road block.

The Tall Blacks are on the board in their World Cup qualifying campaign in truly absurd fashion. A hilariously lopsided 133-74 thumping of Hong Kong gave the Tall Blacks their first win in their Asian campaign, in a bizarre game which was more like a social shootaround or All-Star game than an international basketball qualifier. The surprise came in how freely the points flowed, in one the biggest thrashings in New Zealand basketball history.

Smith good to go Essendon AFL recruit Devon Smith has declared he can withstand the rigours of a new midfield role as he looks to move on from his bitter exit from Greater Western Sydney.

The 24-year-old struggled with knee injuries during his stint with the Giants but has resumed running and will begin full-contact training with the Bombers before Christmas.

Back to back for Barrett Electric All Blacks playmaker Beauden Barrett has collected back-to-back awards in being named World Rugby’s player of the year.

It’s the second year in a row the first five-eighth has taken the individual award, continuing New Zealand’s dominance in becoming the fifth successive All Black to win the honour.

Fellow first-five Dan Carter took the award in 2015 and in 2012, while skipper Kieran Read won in 2013 and Brodie Retallick the following year.

“I’m very proud and surprised,” Barrett said.

“I wanted to be better than last year, and I still feel like I’ve got plenty more to go, so that’s exciting.

“I’ve got to thank the team, I’m just one player amongst a great team.”

Barrett’s award was one of a swathe New Zealand collected at World Rugby’s end-of-year awards in Monaco yesterday.

All Blacks winger Rieko Ioane won breakthrough player of the year award, winding up an outstanding year which finished on Sunday with two tries as New Zealand beat Wales 33-18 in Cardiff.

Hartley impresses at Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Kiwi driver Brendon Hartley has finished 15th in the seasonending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix for Torro Rosso after failing to finish races in Mexico and Brazil.

Having failed to finish the two previous races in Mexico and Brazil, Hartley drove impressively after struggling in qualifying and starting at the back of the 20-car grid.

It is the New Zealand driver’s second completed race after joining Toro Rosso near the tailend of the season.

He was 13th in his debut drive at the United States Grand Prix before engine problems at the next two events.

Yesterday’s drive left him one place off French team-mate Pierre Gasly, with whom Hartley will contest the entire 2018 championship.

Their combined efforts weren’t enough to keep Toro Rosso sixth overall in the team standings and they dropped one place.

The 24-year-old needed to finish 11th or better to secure a maiden Supercars title in the final race of the season and was leading the race when he was given a pit lane penalty for speeding.

The Mid Canterbury senior rep side have started a winning streak after defeating North Otago by three runs on Sunday.

Playing in their last 60-over warm-up game before the Hawke Cup begins, the side travelled south to Oamaru for one last hit-out.

Mid Canterbury won the toss and elected to bat first, clearly looking to show that their improved batting performance last week was no fluke.

William and James Southby opened the batting, with Wil-

liam departing early for a duck, while James continued on to muster 27 runs.

Des Kruger will be hoping he is starting to set a trend after being dismissed on 49 for the second consecutive week, staying at the crease to face 64 balls.

Mid Canterbury found their runs in the sixth wicket partnership of 81 between Bo Houston and Matt Winter, who scored 54 runs and 57 runs respectively on Mid Canterbury’s way to 222.

Jordan Horrell was North Otago’s best bowler, taking three wickets for 37 runs.
