With lockdown bringing an end to most sports and club gatherings for well over two months, there has been no club better suited to spreading their wings again under Level 2 than the Ashburton Pigeon Racing Club.

The club’s season was set to start at the beginning of March, with one race able to be held before lockdown brought the season to a halt.

They were able to resume last week, with long-time member Malcolm Davidson picking up victory in the first race back.

“I was quite fortunate, I won the first

race before the virus and the first one back,” he said.

Pigeon racing involves discovering which birds can make their way home the quickest after being released from locations all around the country.

The South Island season begins with races starting in St Andrews south of Timaru, before increasingly heading south, ending up with races beginning in Gore and Balclutha.

Each bird carries an electronic chip that is scanned by a timing device at the pigeon’s home, and using GPS measurements, determines the average velocity of the bird on its journey.

For Davidson’s winning bird in last

week’s race, it made the trip from St Andrews back to his property in around 43 minutes, at an average velocity of 1072 metres a minute.

The sport is perfect for a socially distanced world, with a truck picking up the birds in cages from the clubrooms behind The Devon, before taking them to the start point.

Currently, only having eight members, the club also meets gathering limits of 10, which is something Davidson would like to see change.

One killed in Maronan Road crash

One person has died following a crash reported to have been between a ute and tractor on the outskirts of Ashburton.

The crash occurred on Maronan Road at around 6.10pm Tuesday, between Kennels and Lills roads.

A police spokesperson said the victim was a 59-year-old male and that both the tractor and ute were travelling on the same side of the road in the same direction.

Both speed and intoxication had been ruled out as contributing factors, the spokesman said.

Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Alan Burgess said firefighters attending were involved from a medical perspective and a scene protection perspective, but were not required to extricate anybody from the vehicles.

St John spokeswoman Ngaire Jones said they sent two ambulances to the scene but did not transport anybody to hospital.

A police spokesperson said the identity of the deceased will be released when

they are able.

The road was re-opened by 11.50pm on Tuesday night.

Tuesday was a busy day for firefighters, first being called to a medical assist at around 2.45pm, but they were stood down soon after.

At 10.15pm that evening they were called to an incident where a man suffered burns to his face from an outdoor diesel heater.

Burgess said it appeared that too much air had got into the heater and it had flared up in the man’s face.

Jones said one person was transported to Ashburton Hospital by ambulance with moderate injuries.

There had been a noticeable pick-up in call-outs over the weekend for the brigade, attending three incidents on Saturday and one on Monday.

The first was an alarm activation at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre.

The other two were vegetation fires, one in a pit on Seafield Road and a hedge fire in the Hinds area, that were called in within 10 minutes of each other.

The crash occurred on Maranon Road between Lills and Kennels roads, and the road was shut for a number of hours as emergency crews worked at the scene.

Playcentres fight for funding fairness

Playcentre has been the early childhood education centre of choice for many parents in Mid Canterbury for more than 55 years, but the organisation, nationally, is facing the most significant threat yet to its future.

While playcentre educates more than seven per cent of New Zealand’s preschoolers, out of the $321 million allocated in this month’s budget to early childhood education over the next four years, Playcentre New Zealand received just $3.1 million. It educates 7 per cent of pre-schoolers, but received 1 per cent of the total early childhood education budget.

While playcentres have a high level of volunteer parent involvement, fees are low and the government allocation pays salaries for head office staff and the many hundreds of qualified supervisors working around the country.

Mid Canterbury centre advocate Leeanne Miller became involved with the organisation 22 years ago. Over those years she’s watched the number of playcentres around the Ashburton District grow to seven.

Playcentre plays an important role in the lives of children and their families, but the inequality

in funding between it and other early childhood education organisations means playcentre is now in a fight for survival, she said.

“Playcentre is still very strong, but this is really testing the financial side.”

As an organisation it was unique and New Zealand was the only country with an organisation where parents learned alongside their children, Miller said.

“It’s a place where parents make friends and where new people to town can start to build relationships in their community.”

Miller believes there is a lack of understanding among decision makers on the role playcentre has in a community and that leads to it being undervalued and underfunded.

An online petition highlighting the organisation’s financial plight and the need to ensure the organisation continues is gaining huge support, Miller said.

In addition, its chief executive is in talks with Education Minister Chris Hipkins on the need to address the funding equities.

“It just needs to be fair. They need to fully understand playcentre, they need to listen to what playcentre is about, and

they need to understand it is more than an early childhood education provider,” Miller said.

“Playcentre is about the whole family, not just the child and it’s now in a fight for survival.”

Ashburton’s deputy mayor Liz McMillan is a qualified playcentre supervisor and worked at the Methven centre. She’s adding her weight to the call for equity in funding between early childhood education centres saying playcentre played a valuable role in the whole preschool spectrum.

“It’s an organisation that involves the whole family, a place where children and adults make friends for life. It’s a place where children feel very comfortable.”

With seven centres across Mid Canterbury and the oldest, Rakaia, having been open since 1966, there were thousands of families who had been through the system, she said.

“It’s a real melting place of cultures, a great place for mums and dads as it is for their children.”

It was disappointing the organisation was struggling to receive a fair share of government funds and that was forcing it into a real battle for survival, McMillan said.

She is urging people to sign the online position calling on the government to address playcentre’s funding issues.

Ashburton A&P Show organisers are positive it will go ahead this spring, even if the format may be a bit different than usual.

Newly-elected association president Peter Stewart said the show was scheduled for October 30 and 31.

“Whether it takes the form it has in the past is yet to be determined. The committee is very positive about having a show.”

A final decision would be made by late July, Stewart said, “We do have time on our side.”

With the Ashburton show traditionally attracting between 3000 to 4000 people, uncertainty remained over what the Covid-19 rules for mass gatherings would be.

“If we have to have contact tracing, the task could be onerous,” Stewart said.

Local businesses had also been hit hard by the financial effects of Covid-19 and the organising committee was waiting to hear whether they would be maintaining a presence at the show.

Competitors in equestrian classes, shearing and dog trials competed in a regional circuit of events “so we want to give them the opportunity to participate”.

Stewart said he was unsure what impact the cancelling of the Christchurch show would have on Ashburton, “There may be competitors that planned to go to the Canterbury show that may now come here, such as sheep exhibitors.”

Earlier this month the New Zealand Agricultural Show in Christchurch was cancelled with organisers citing financial uncertainty due to Covid-19 and public health concerns for canning the annual three-day affair.

The Ashburton A&P Association did not have the same financial pressure, Stewart said.

“We are a charitable organisation and don’t have a lot of surplus funds, but could possibly put an event on that could run at a loss to give something back to the community.

“That decision hasn’t been made yet.

“So there are a whole lot of

options that we have to work through.”

Stewart was keen to maintain as many of the traditional competitions as possible.

“I want to see everything from equestrian events, shearing, dog trials, highland dancing, poultry, sheep and clydesdales.”

Ashburton’s annual show began in 1878 and has been held every year since, except between 1942 and 1944, due to World War Two, when the showgrounds were used as an army camp.

Stewart was elected president at the association’s annual meeting on Monday, replacing David Butterick who had completed his two-year term. After having to postpone its annual meeting by two months because of Covid-19, the organising committee was now back to having regular monthly meetings.

Flemington farmer and Ashburton District Councillor Lynette Lovett was awarded a life membership at the meeting.

“The Lovett family have been very strong supporters of our association for many years,” Stewart

said Stewart said he had never owned a farm, but had worked on farms. For many years he worked in the grain stores of Pyne Gould Guinness and then PGG Wrightson, before retiring.

He was born and bred on Auckland’s North Shore, recalling a nearby dairy farm with a six-bail walk-through milking shed when he was growing up.

“That farm went many years ago and it is all multi-million dollar houses now.

“I’ve always had an association with farming and anything to do with agriculture. I am not a great sheep man; I like the cows and horses.”

He started volunteering at the Ashburton show in the equestrian area, building and maintaining jumps, progressing on to the general committee and president.

“I have fond memories of A&P shows as a child, particularly going to the Easter Show in Auckland.

“A&P shows have something for everyone. I like to go and have a good look around,” Stewart said.

“It is a great family sport and it is not too expensive, it only costs around $1 to $1.50 per bird to send them away to race and, if you build a cage yourself, the only real cost you are looking at is the $1000 for the timing equipment,” he said.

Davidson said it can be an enjoyable sport to get your kids involved with, and that it would be good to see more younger people getting involved, with some viewing it as a dying sport.

Most, like Davidson, breed their own racing stock, and while there are plenty of oldschool rules such as not to breed two birds with the same coloured eyes together, past racing success tends to be carried down through the generations.

“The bird that won the race last week, his father won five races so we knew when he’d won those five races we should probably keep him around as breeding stock,” he said.

Training the birds involves letting them fly around their property locally, before increasing the distance from home they are released from to get them used to finding their own way home.

Davidson said clear conditions are best, with the pigeons especially not liking foggy or misty days.

Celebrating her brother’s survival from Covid-19

Throughout their lives May Greenslade and brother Lachlan Robertson have stayed in close contact, but the arrival of Covid-19 means it’s been months since the pair talked, longer since they met face-to-face.

May lives in Ashburton, and has been a regular visitor to Lachlan who now lives in the Christchurch resthome Rosewood. Like all resthomes, Rosewood went into early lockdown as Covid-19 began to make itself felt across New Zealand. Unlike other resthomes, however, Rosewood was destined to become a hot-bed for the virus.

Many residents became ill, Lachlan among them and he was one of the first group to be taken by ambulance to isolation and treatment at Burwood Hospital, a patient transfer May anxiously watched on television.

It was an incredibly stressful time for his wife Ruth, his children and for sister May. Lachlan celebrated his 89th birthday in Feb-

ruary and for weeks May wondered if the brother she loved would survive.

“I thought about it all the time while he was in there. I thought, is this really happening to our family and hoping he’d come through it – he’d be one of the lucky ones,” May said.

Age might have been against him, but Lachlan was a battler and, in spite of being very ill for several days, he survived.

“From what I understand he was quite a sick boy, but now apparently he’s as good as gold. He’s eating and drinking well and he’s back at the resthome,” she said.

The return home had been bittersweet, however, as several of those who died at Burwood Hospital were her brother’s close friends and he was still struggling to deal with that loss, May said.

“But he’s someone who takes everything in his stride, he’s that type of person, but he’s not a young guy anymore.”

As part of the resthome’s care protocol, phone calls to Lachlan are still limited to his

that will change next week and for May, the day she is given the all-clear to head to Christchurch to meet her brother face-toface, will be a red letter day.

Growing good things for good causes

When an organisation has set you on a new path in life, then it’s logical you’ll want to give something back in return, says Mayfield woman Janet Cross.

She’s an Outward Bound graduate, attending a classic course in 1989. That was at a time when she’d lost touch with some of the things that had been important during her growing years, but three weeks on the Shackleton 298 watch, and she graduated with a much greater appreciation and understanding of life, Cross said.

“My course opened my eyes to a wider world and provided me the opportunity to meet and get to know people from all walks of life.”

Fast forward a few decades that included marriage, three children, one grandchild and Outward Bound has retained a special place in Cross’ heart. When she

family, Cross decided to turn her surplus into cash, setting up a stall stocked with eggs, tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers.

It was an instant hit with Mayfield residents, selling out again and again.

“It’s about giving back and we all need to do this in life, however we can,” she said.

When the final cash count is done, Cross hopes to top $300 as her contribution to the cause.

In the past members of her yoga classes have been the beneficiaries of her surplus produce, with any money raised going to Women’s Refuge, St John and the Cancer Society. From now Outward Bound will be included on that list, she said.

“Outward Bound made a huge impact on my life and it’s still part of my life and I love the fact that they’ve kept current and that they’ve adapted to modern day needs.”

heard that Covid-19 was carving swathes through the Marlborough Sounds school’s finances, she wanted to be part of its emergency fundraising drive.

Along with other supporters she has helped to raise more than $430,000 towards a goal of $500,000 that will help the school remain operational in spite of weeks without income.

Outward Bound’s courses changed lives, Cross said, and the old stereotype of it being for sports jocks only had long gone. It now catered to people with a wide range of physical and emotional needs too.

“It’s so tough for them right now and they said they may not survive without this money. This is a bit of a two-way thing as it has the feel-good factor in that you’re helping someone else.”

Property Brokers are renown getting behind Ashburton County Lions Toot For Tucker community foodbank drive, so when lockdown left local foodbank stocks depleted the company again put their hand up to help.

Their Unlock ’n’ Restock campaign gathered support from Netherby Four Square, New World Ashburton and Tinwald SuperValue when they all agreed to be drop-off points for non-perishable food items.

Spokesperson Kirsty Clay said they chose the supermarkets that are easily accessible with convenient opening hours.

Clay said she is pleased with the response from the community.

“We have been going around collecting donations regularly.

New World Ashburton very kindly topped up their donation box this week by adding to it themselves.”

Hearing about the project Dorie School got on board too. They held a mufti and activity day which saw a food donation take the place of the traditional gold coin donation.

Four Ashburton District projects have made the first cut in a race for a share of government funds for work that will kick-start New Zealand’s economy post Covid-19.

While no firm time frame has been given by the government, Ashburton District Council chief executive Hamish Riach is hoping there will be an outcome by the end of next week.

Six major pieces of work were submitted last month by the council when the government put out a call for projects that were ‘shovel ready’. It indicated it

was prepared to allocate funds to infrastructure projects that were virtually ready to start to create jobs and reduce the economic impact of Covid-19.

Across New Zealand more than 1900 applications were made for a share of the fund. Two lodged by the council, the Ashburton Relief Sewer and Methven water project have not made the cut.

It was quite an achievement getting four out of the six projects across the first cut line be-

cause there were a number of local authorities that had not made that first cut, Riach said.

When the fund was announced, the government indicated it wanted projects that could be started within six months. It also suggested each project would need to have a value of more than $10 million, although smaller projects that demonstrated a direct or immediate benefit to regional economies could be considered.

Missing trampers found alive and well NZME The two trampers missing in the Kahurangi National Park have been found alive.

Dion Reynolds and Jessica O’Connor, 23, went tramping in the Kahurangi National Park 18 days ago but failed to return when expected.

A St John spokeswoman said both only had minor injuries but an ambulance had met a helicopter to take them to Nelson hospital.

Reynold’s work colleagues at Takaka’s Roots Bar are overjoyed with the news. Owner Holly Osmond says the work group is over the moon about the amazing outcome.

Reynolds worked in the kitchen at Roots Bar over the summer and O’Connor worked at Abel Tasman Kayaks.

In brief Woman hit by train dies A woman has died after she was hit by a train in Wellington yesterday afternoon. Emergency Services were called to Tawa just before 1pm. A police spokesperson said they were making inquiries to establish the circumstances of the death. Metlink reported train services were initially suspended between Wellington and Porirua and were replaced by buses due to an emergency services incident.

Four local projects still on shovel ready list

Their parents and O’Connor’s colleagues at Abel Tasman Kayaks were hopeful, saying O’Connor knew the area well and both were experienced in the outdoors.

Staff at Abel Tasman Kayaks were excited at the news but the

owner was unavailable for comment.

A large scale search effort for the pair included search teams aided by a dog and use of drones to create a heat map of the entire valley system.

Nelson Bays Area Commander Detective Inspector Paul Borrell said the pair “seemed to be in reasonably good health”.

They were reportedly found

just before 1pm yesterday.

Searching for the pair started last Tuesday, with good weather on the first few days. But over the weekend heavy rain had hampered the search, reducing the odds of the pair being found alive and well.

A Royal NZ Air Force NH90 helicopter has been helping search efforts over the past few days.

It was back there yesterday morning, with the RNZAF sharing a photo of a crew of three on board – as well as a search dog all geared up and ready in a bright red vest.

The search for the pair had resumed at first light yesterday morning, police said.

Sergeant Malcolm York said the defence force flew six teams into the area.

Yesterday’s search was centred around the Anatori River and the coastline, he said.

More rain is on the way for Auckland this week – but a meteorologist says it will take a solid month of wet weather to alleviate Auckland’s worst drought in quarter of a century. Niwa’s Ben Noll said the 270mm rainfall deficit that Auckland faced at the start of the week had dropped slightly to 250mm, thanks to a bout of light rain. “But it’s important to remember that when we see it raining in Auckland, that doesn’t mean that the drought is over by any stretch on the imagination.”

No new cases New Zealand does not have a single person in hospital with Covid-19, as the country marked five consecutive days without a new case yesterday. At the latest Covid-19 update, Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield said the one person who had been in hospital with the coronavirus had been discharged, meaning there was no longer anybody receiving hospital care for it. “I think this is the first time, at least probably in a couple of months, that we haven’t had somebody in hospital, so that’s another good – RNZ position to be in.”

Trans-Tasman travel A group of government and business representatives will deliver a blueprint on how a transTasman bubble could work early next month. The Trans-Tasman Safe Border Group has been coordinated by the Australia New Zealand leadership forum and has involved representatives from both sides of the ditch. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the group was considering every aspect of a passenger’s journey. While there was “enthusiasm” on both sides for this to proceed as soon as it is safe to, Ardern said she did not think either country was ready yet.

Police fire shots A man has been arrested in the Bay of Plenty town of Kawerau after police fired shots at him during a chase. Police were carrying out a search warrant at a property in the town at about 11.25am yesterday when a man fled in a vehicle. Road spikes were used twice before the vehicle came to a stop in Te Teko. Police said the man then pointed a firearm at officers and they fired at him. He then fled in another vehicle stolen from the scene and headed back towards Kawerau, where police forced the vehicle to stop. The man then fled on foot. He was tracked to a house and surrendered to police. Nobody was injured in the incident.

Deals to encourage domestic tourism RNZ The push to encourage Kiwis to holiday at home has extended to cut-price campervan deals, but the hospitality industry said hotels, motels and restaurants were not seeing much movement ahead of the long weekend.

Tourism businesses were reeling in the wake of travel ban announcements, and cancellations stacked up in travel company inboxes as the fallout from Covid-19 restrictions bit down hard, and suddenly.

One of the country’s largest campervan hire companies has dropped daily rates up to 70 per cent to keep the wheels rolling on the business, to stave off job losses, and to connect New Zealanders with their own back yard.

And few were bigger champions of the Kiwi staycation than Auckland’s Priscila Mills.

The Brazilian New Zealander met her Argentinian husband here, and together they run a tourism business which organises travel to South America, Latin American Alliance. It was currently on pause, so Mills has re-focused efforts on getting Kiwis to holiday at home.

cally – a new social media group which attracted more than 20,000 members within its first weeks.

“What amazes me the most is the level of engagement; 98 per cent of the people who are inside our community they actually live in New Zealand and they love travelling.

“It’s like a kind of a magic because people (on the site) just talk to each other.”

Research out this week showed 90 per cent surveyed for a visitor insights programme planned to take a holiday within New Zealand.

The research and strategy company Angus and Associates, which specialised in the tourism and leisure sector, has been surveying people for a visitor insights programme.

Research director Carolyn Parker said the results were surprising.

“People are definitely thinking about travel. There’s only a small proportion – about one in 10 who don’t want to travel at the moment.”

She said a glance behind the figures showed that people were keen to visit friends and family, or take a trip down memory lane to places they had not visited in a

long time, or places they had never been.

“People are wanting to go to a special place, or somewhere familiar to them, or which is part of their history.

“They’re sort of re-connecting beyond the obvious so yeah, it’s quite fascinating information.”

Parker said the research aimed to help the industry re-focus its marketing.

Tourism Holdings, which operated Britz, Maui and Mighty campers, took almost 2000 bookings on the first day this week of a cut-price rentals campaign.

She said people were being cautious with their disposable income and were therefore very price-conscious.

Campervan rentals were in some cases up to 70 per cent below normal daily rates.

Chief executive Grant Webster said they wanted to keep the wheels turning against a stagnant international market, and to stave off job losses.

“We are at that point where we need to be consulting with our crew about potential redundancies, but this campaign is designed to stop some roles going.”

lobal equity markets had a strong week, with optimism over economies starting to reopen and news of progress on a Covid-19 vaccine boosting confidence.

This came despite further tension between the US and China, increasing economic uncertainty and China scrapping its annual growth target for the first time.

Key indices in the US, UK and Europe were all up more than 3 per cent for the week, while the ASX 200 in Australia gained 1.8 per cent.

The NZX 50, which rose the previous week in contrast to weakness elsewhere, slipped 0.6 per cent.

Last week’s top NZX 50 movers were Argosy Property (up 8.9 per cent), Arvida(up 6.8 per cent) and Oceania Healthcare (up 6.7 per cent), while Refining NZ (down 10.1 per cent), Z Energy (down 6.7 per cent) and Freightways (down 5.9 per cent) were weakest.

The NZ dollar rebounded in line with the more upbeat tone, gaining 2.7 per cent against the US dollar and 0.8 per cent against the Australia dollar.

On a trade-weighted basis, the currency is 7.7 per cent down from its 2019 highs (from March last year).

It will be a holiday-shortened week in some of the major regions, with markets closed in the US and UK on Monday for Memorial Day and the Spring Bank holiday.

Investors will be watching as many governments continue to ease lockdowns, as well as the partial reopening of the New York Stock Exchange trading floor on Tuesday.

sonal income and spending report.

Two consumer confidence releases (on Tuesday and Friday) could have more relevance to the shortterm outlook, given the importance of the US consumer.

China’s National People’s Congress (which kicked off last Friday) continues this week in Beijing.

Meanwhile, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison is scheduled to address the National Press Club in Canberra on Tuesday.

This speech will be closely watched across the Tasman. Morrison will presumably discuss the state of the economy, but he might also touch on increasing tensions with China over Australian exports.

Locally, we will be watching the latest Financial Stability Report from the Reserve Bank.

Yesterday, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) released its six-monthly Financial Stability Report (FSR). The last FSR was released in late November, and the overall message was that New Zealand’s financial system remained resilient.

However, at that time the RBNZ said international risks had increased, largely on the back of ongoing trade uncertainty.

The RBNZ noted that lower interest rates were helping to cushion the economy and borrowers from the effects of weaker growth, but that this could also exacerbate pre-existing debt as well as imbal-

ances in the economy.

New Zealand investors will also look towards the final ANZ Business Outlook survey for May. ANZ will release the May Business Outlook survey today at 1pm.

This should see sentiment improve compared with April levels, given the preliminary May release reflected a small bounce across all forward-looking activity indicators.

Nonetheless, in an absolute sense we would expect to see most indicators remain extremely low.

In April headline business confidence fell to 66.6 per cent. That was the worst reading since April 1988.

The Own Activity index fell to 55.1 per cent, compared with 26.7 per cent in March.

There will also be plenty of corporate news to follow across the local market this week.

Several companies are due to report earnings, including a few that have rescheduled results from earlier in the month. In New Zealand, earnings releases will be forthcoming from the likes of Kiwi Property, Arvida, Napier Port, Mainfreight, TrustPower, Sanford, Gentrack and Infratil.

In addition, Restaurant Brands and Vista Group are holding annual meetings. These will cover the period ending 31 March, and it will therefore be trading updates and outlook statements that will be more relevant in the eyes of investors. Across the Tasman, Brambles is hosting an analyst day and Spark Infrastructure is holding an annual meeting.

Early childhood funding equality needed

ince the days of mums who stayed home and spent time with their preschoolers, preparing them for the school world, the life and education of preschoolers has travelled a long, long way.

Kindergartens, playcentres, in home care and early childhood centres – today’s families are spoiled for choice.

Each style of centre offers a different style of care and differing levels of education. One thing at least three care organisations have in common is that they receive government funding – to varying degrees. And there’s the rub. Not everything is equal in the early childhood world.

Over time, as working parents became the norm, early childhood centres catering to parent needs, from early morning until after work, have grown in number.

And that saw the erosion of the traditional kindergarten model built on morning or afternoon sessions depending on a child’s age. Kindergartens were forced to change and while they don’t match early childhood centres in hours, they’ve moved a long way down this track.

And that leaves playcentres. This organisation is as Kiwi as you can get. It’s an organisation established by parents for families, not just their children. What they offer is a different early childhood experience, one that is largely parent led, but one that is overseen by trained supervisors. In many ways it replicates the home environment but with the added bonus of other mums, dads and kids.

There’s no right or wrong when it comes to choosing a preschool learning environment. Every child is different, every family’s needs are different. The important thing is that there is choice.

Playcentre’s philosophy, however, makes it unique – it’s about empowering adults and children to work, play, learn and grow together.

Kindergarten, playcentre, early childhood centre – treat them the same, they might have different philosophies but they’re all working towards one goal – helping create great Kiwi kids.

o Christoper Luxon, the former legendary, “man at the controls” of Air New Zealand in its halcyon heydays – thought to be concealed in the arid wastes of the Botany landscape, biding his time until a vacancy for the leadership of the National Party presented itself – seems, after all, to have “missed the bus”, in much the same manner as the famously doomed Prime Minister of Britain, Neville Chamberlain, opined of Adolf Hitler, days before the outbreak of World War Two. For whatever reason, Luxon – supposedly the saviour-in-waiting of the party – has not emerged from his self-imposed exile, “as a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour”. (1 Peter 5 v 8) as he had, for sometime, been confidently expected to.

So Simon Bridges’ sudden demise as leader of the Party left National both rudderless and with an aching void that needed, instantly, to be filled, at a time of great international perturbation.

A successor had to be found, and quickly.

On cue, that old stalwart and former National PM, the be-grizzled, Jim Bolger, recommended a hitherto unknown junior MP, named Todd Muller, who had once worked in Jim’s office.

Immediately, head-scratching and profile checking, for most of the rest of the practising members, to get their heads round this new name and, wherever possible, attempt to remember what he looked like.

People in the street had no idea of either name or face – “A Kiwi sportsman”, “an actor”, “a TV comic” or, simply, an “influencer”, were some of the random guesses offered.

So Muller can hardly be described as a household celebrity.

However, in the last few days, he has worked hard to establish recognition, and expressed the hope he would be on all the TV news programmes for the next several evenings.

Thus, National is doing its best to get its abrupt replacements for the sadly unsuccessful Simon Bridges publicly noticed.

And then there is the new deputy, the much better known, instantly recognisable by name, and face, with a glittering CV as long as a piece of string, to match, Nicola Laura Kaye, who, by everything that lives and breathes, should be National’s new leader, NOT its deputy.

Once again it seems the National Party, as a whole, has this time also missed that elusive omnibus.

Some might even add, “shot itself in the foot” though it might yet be a bit early for such brutal opinions.

EYE ON POLITICS

Deciding where to start with Kaye’s list of accomplishments is, in itself, a difficult decision.

Perhaps the most striking and highly significant would be her 717 vote election defeat of one Jacinda Ardern, in Auckland Central in 2011, with 45 per cent of the vote in a three-way contest.

Before that, in 2008 she had made her debut in Parliament with a remarkable victory over the sitting Labour MP, the redoubtable Judith Tizard.

According to that friend to us all, Google no less, this event was seen as one of the most breath-catching upsets in that, or any, election.

Breaking the ninety year hold by left-wing parties over the seat, Kaye became its first ever National MP for Auckland Central.

Twelve years on she is still the Member of Parliament for Auckland Central. During that time, she has held a wide range of cabinet posts such as Minister of Civil Defence, Youth Affairs, Immigration, ACC and Education, to name but a few.

Nikki was 40 on the eleventh of February this year, Jacinda will be on July 26.

They are matching good-lookers, a modern consideration of great significance, however politically incorrect such an assertion sounds.

One need cast one’s mind back only three years, to remember what little progress Andrew Little – then leader of the Labour Party – was making towards becoming PM in the 2017 election.

So obvious was it he had not got what it takes to reach the ninth floor of the Beehive, earnest and hard-working as he was, Little made the ultimate political sacrifice, stood away from the leadership and, for the good of the Party, welcomed Jacinda Ardern as his replacement.

And, in those immortal and boringly repetitive words, the rest is history.

And what history!

With Jacinda holding a 55 per cent lead over Bridges as preferred Prime Minister, unsurprisingly, National decided Simon had to go. (In passing, it’s worth wondering aloud how Simon was ever thought to be a realistic leader of the National Party with the potential to become Prime Minister.)

From his first day in office he looked a very long shot indeed,

“to reach the top of the greasy pole”, as described by the famous British statesman of the nineteenth century, Benjamin Disraeli, of the business of acquiring the premiership.

So, as Bridges’ successor, enter another, tall, bald, besuited, middle-aged and unknown, white man, Todd Muller, supposedly to rescue the fallen fortunes of the National Party and bring election victory on September 19.

It will be a tall order of great height but . . . good luck to him.

Meanwhile, the much better prospect to lead the Nats to a famous victory, Nikki Kaye, with her twelve years of vast and varied parliamentary expertise and, by the by, the holder of a genetics degree from the University of Otago, as well as a Bachelor of Law from Wellington, is sideline shunted into the position of dead-end Deputy.

It astonishes me that such a crass decision can be made in this way. Kaye is so obviously the woman the National Party has needed ever since Little fell on his political sword and let in Ardern.

Some other facts about Nikki’s earlier career that might appeal to a wider community, rather than the specifically political, she is/was an accomplished athlete, the Auckland 3000m champion in 1997, aged seventeen, while in both 2008 and 2013 she completed the coast-to-coast race, in the process becoming the first cabinet minister to do so.

And since all this, a battle with cancer, from which, courageously, she emerged well enough to be thought fit to continue her full political career.

To use that somewhat back-handed compliment, if National cannot recognise a wrapped and shiny gift horse in the mouth when she is sitting directly in front of them, they need

no sympathy from the rest of us.

And Kaye is a genuine recoverer from cancer. Doubters should be informed – there are such survivors.

Thus, the 2020 National Party seems more than likely to flounder its way to another ignominious defeat, with its potential match winner left running the line rather than leading the charge from first-five.

Since the above was written, Muller has named his front bench team, which looks very similar to that of the overthrown Simon Bridges; a tweak there, a shuffle here, but the noteworthy appointment of the highly capable, Amy Adams – with the largest National majority in the country – is undoubtedly the stand-out.

Adam’s decision to retire at the coming election and disappear into the far reaches of her Selwyn electorate has been rescinded in a moment, and here she is on the front line again, this time taking on the evil Coronavirus.

With Adams staring it down – after the drubbing it has already received from Ardern and Ashley – I see its future as very limited.

We wish her every success as Covid-19 Minister-in-Waiting.

Now it remains to be seen whether the, perhaps, slightly aloof Todd Muller can energise his re-grouped forces to the point of making inroads into Ardern’s colossal lead as preferred Prime Minister.

It will be no push-over.

Would Kaye have been more likely to get the job done?

Storm clouds on the horizon David Clark

t’s not often we would all say we were pleased with rain at the end of May, or that it was insufficient!

Last week here we had swedes beginning to show moisture stress and there certainly was moisture stress when trying to tread standards into the ground.

But here in our patch of paradise we are better placed than most other regions in New Zealand who are going into winter with significant and serious feed deficiencies.

There is one thing for sure; this is not the year to have a tough winter.

We face many storm clouds on the horizon, the biggest of which is an intention and/or need to borrow $140 billion to take the nation’s government debt to 53.65 per cent of GDP; hopefully only 53 per cent, based on some reasonably optimistic timeframes for the borders opening to near normal tourist numbers.

In all of the announcements around wage subsidies, business support packages and income support for redundant people, there are a couple of things that I haven’t heard.

Firstly, a clear message to folk who have been employed in industries that will not be returning to normal levels of activity anytime soon, that they need to look to working within the primary sector.

Feed deficiency is a major concern for farmers heading into winter following a dry summer/autumn period.

There may be little point continuing to support some businesses and the sooner someone who has been employed driving a jet boat learns to drive a tractor the better.

Secondly, and more importantly, we have heard some faint muttering about the importance of revenue from the primary sector to see us through, but it almost seems a little begrudgingly.

I would have thought now was the time to look at what we do well, what we can do better, what we can do as new industries and what we can do to extract further value out of what we are already good at doing.

The only pathway to sustainable prosperity for our country is to sell goods and services to those living beyond our shores.

Selling lattes to each other is stirring the milk in the bucket, but doesn’t fill the bucket up. Borrowing milk from elsewhere to fill the bucket up, doesn’t give us more milk to sell.

Milking the cow to fill the bucket to sell to someone else is the trick. What we need to do is work out how to extract more value from the milk and employ more people by doing so.

Before you start writing a letter to the editor, I’m not necessarily advocating an increase in dairying. Feel free to replace the

bucket of milk with a bag of seed, rack of lamb, subscription to an accounting program or ride in a jet boat. But equally I see little long-term merit in borrowing money to fund fanciful, nice to have social or aesthetic projects that will not generate ongoing income.

The trap that will be easy for New Zealand to fall into is often described by farmers as “mortgaging the back paddock to buy the groceries”.

Whereas we urgently need to work out what can be profitably and sustainably done with the back paddock to earn the money to buy the groceries.

It is a deep hole in which we all find ourselves in and there are big challenges ahead for those holding the responsibility of policy leadership.

On farm I see we have an important role to play, stay focused, get the basics that generate revenue right and then wherever possible, choose local businesses to support with your custom.

QUICK RECIPE 1T oil 1 onion, finely chopped 1 small leek, trimmed and very finely sliced 200g beef mince 1T Mexican spice mix 2 medium orange kūmara, sliced into 2.5cm pieces 2 carrots, sliced into 2.5cm pieces 250g pumpkin, peeled, seeds removed and sliced into 2.5cm pieces (about 1 cup) 400g can chopped tomatoes in juice 1C water Pinch of salt 1C frozen sweet corn kernels 400g can cannelloni beans, drained and rinsed

■■ Turn up the heat and add beef mince. Brown the mince, breaking up any large lumps. Add Mexican spice mix and cook for a further minute.

■■ Add kūmara, carrot and pumpkin pieces.

■■ Add tomatoes, water and salt.

Bring to the boil, reduce heat

to low, cover and simmer for 30 minutes. Stir occasionally until vegetables are cooked.

■■ Add sweet corn and cannelloni beans and cook until steaming hot.

■■ Serve hot with lime wedges if desired.

Further plans have been revealed around local sports’ long awaited passage to play.

Sporting administrators have expressed delight as various codes settle on dates for their respective grades.

Both junior and senior football in Canterbury begins next weekend while local football in Mid Canterbury kicks off on June 13.

Mainland Football said the winter football season will run through to September 26 although some competitions may end before then, depending on the structure of draws and the availability of grounds.

Association staff are now working around the clock to get the competition draws complete.

“We know you’re just as excited as we are to be back out on the grass with a ball at your feet and we’re sure you’ll have many questions around dates of play and competition information for your league,” a Mainland Football spokesperson said.

Canterbury Rugby League confirmed it was targeting a June 20 in a return to play although the date was subject to change.

Community league will enter a three week pre-season phase tomorrow meaning contact and non-contact training is permitted for clubs who can comply with public health and safety protocols.

Daniel Abt has parted company with the Audi Formula E team after letting a professional gamer impersonate him in an official esports race.

The manufacturer had earlier suspended the German driver after the weekend cheating controversy.

“Today I was informed in a conversation with Audi that our ways will split from now on, we won’t be racing together in Formula E any more and the co-operation has ended,” he said in a 15-minute video on YouTube.

The 27-year-old denied seeking any sporting gain in Saturday’s fifth round of the all-electric series’ virtual Race at Home Challenge and said he had simply wanted “to create a funny story for the fans”.

He said what happened had been openly discussed beforehand on his Twitch livestream in front of 1000 followers and no money had changed hands.

“Looking back, we did not think enough about the seriousness and the consequences of the situation. We made a huge mistake there,” said Abt, who has paid 10,000 euros ($10,956) to charity.

“It was never my intention to let another driver drive for me to get a result and keep quiet about it later on just to make me look better.”

Audi said in an earlier statement that “integrity, transparency and consistent compliance with applicable rules” were top priorities.

Harness returns to the track Harness racing returns to the tracks a day early today, with a plethora of horses ready to rock and roll forcing Addington Raceway and Harness Racing New Zealand into scramble mode late last week to decipher if an extra meeting was possible.

Expectations were high for strong numbers for the first meeting in the country for the lockdown which was set for Friday night and when close to 300 nominations rolled in the door on Monday – the extra meeting became a necessity.

A nine-race card was scheduled for today with a further 11 races to be held tomorrow night before big cards at Invercargill on Saturday and then at Cambridge on Sunday.

Mid Canterbury trained horses, who, by large, have had the advantageous situation of being able to continue training on private tracks during the lockdown will be out in force for the two meetings and there’s some genuine excitement amongst participants to be at the track and racing again.

Leading junior driver, John Morrison has a busier weekend ahead than most with drives across the two meetings at Addington and a host of drives at Invercargill on Saturday – but he’s itching to do battle again.

“It’s been a long time, well it’s felt like that anyway,” he said.

“Probably not so much on the home front, because it’s been business as usual with the use of a private track at Malcolm Shinn’s – we’ve been able to keep things ticking over nicely.

“But I love driving at the races, so getting back into it is something I’m looking forward to.”

The defending junior drivers’ premiership champion, Morrison returns to racing with 25 wins on the board for the season – just three wins behind leader, Sheree Tomlinson.

“I think Zambia (Addington, Race 6 on Friday night) might be the one I’m most looking forward

to getting back behind this week, but I’ve got a book I’m pretty happy about in general I think.

“I was surprised I got as many drives as I have at Invercargill (seven), I wasn’t sure how that would play out.”

As well as his driving duties, Morrison is also chipping away in the background with a few of his own horses including five two-year-olds who are coming up nicely and there’s two more horses arriving from North Otago next week to move into his barn and bolster the stocks.

Meanwhile, on the training front, strike-rate Ashburton trainer, Laurence Hanrahan is just happy to see racing back up and going and any resemblance of a result from his two runners today and tomorrow will be a bonus.

that races this week will take some sort of benefit from the run.

“Getting back out there is going to be great, the game needs to be up and running again and starting to move forward and this is the first step towards that.”

Hanrahan said both of his charges were as well as he believed he could have them but reinforced that the run would do both well.

“You can work them as much as you like at home and in workouts and trials, but nothing quite beats getting a proper race under the belt.”

Hanrahan’s stable will be joined at the two-day meeting by fellow Mid Canterbury runners from the stable of; Michael Heenan, Gerard O’Reilly, Leo O’Reilly, Carl Markham and David McCormick.

Unofficial Rugby World Cup proposed for 2021 An unofficial Rugby World Cup which could raise $500 million is being proposed to help ease the financial burden of Covid-19 according to a report in the UK Telegraph.

The Telegraph says the proposed tournament would be a 16 team competition and be held in June and July next year.

The plan has been submitted World Rugby with a working title of the Coronavirus Cup of World Rugby.

The plan has been drawn up by Francis Baron, the former head of the England RFU. The Telegraph reports it would involve 31 matches over six weeks and would mean the postponement of the British and Irish Lions tour of South Africa.

Baron said all of the profits would be distributed to the unions to support professional and community games.

“The key will be winning the sup-

port of the southern hemisphere unions but, with everyone facing horrendous financial challenges, this is a bold and ambitious plan to raise large amounts of new cash from which they will be major beneficiaries,” Baron told the Telegraph.

“The 2015 World Cup generated net profits for the game of around £400 million. I believe this could generate a net profit for distribution to unions of £200 to £250 million.”

Ferns could play men to fill test void Silver Ferns’ coach Dame Noeline Taurua says games against the New Zealand Men’s team could be an option with international Tests in doubt later this year.

The Quad Series between New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, and England is scheduled to start on 20 September in Hamilton.

But it seems highly unlikely that will happen, with most international borders closed due to Covid-19.

History was made last year when the Silver Ferns played their first televised games against the New Zealand Men’s team in the lead up to the World Cup. Dame Noeline said this could be a good year to do the same thing, admitting that the Quad Series in particular was looking “doubtful”.

“So what it does do is open up other opportunities. We had tournaments leading into the Worlds last year . . . a Cadbury Series consisting of the men and also our levels underneath.

“That’s another thing that we’ve got under our belt that I think we can explore. To not only help the Silver Ferns but also to build the level underneath and the profile of our game. So there’s definitely some upside and because we’ve done it before . . . there’s no reason why it can’t be seen as a positive.”

Dame Noeline said if televised, it could also help fill a void for net-

ball fans.

“A lot of people are waiting for sport to get back out on court – and I know our netball community definitely is. I think there’s opportunities that do open up for us in our sport. We’ve ventured into those types of things with the Cadbury Series before. So hopefully we can get creative and see what else we can do to fill the gap.”

With the government working towards a trans-Tasman bubble, Dame Noeline said from a netball perspective, it was ideal.

The Australian Diamonds and Silver Ferns, ranked one and two in the world respectively, have always pushed each other, so her side shouldn’t lose any ground if that goes ahead.

The Constellation Cup is due to start in mid-October but those dates might be pushed back.

Dame Noeline said she was delighted the ANZ Netball Premiership was scheduled for a re-start on June 19.

“One of the proudest things I think coming out of it is that the survival of our sport.

“I think our ability to work together, whether from a Netball New Zealand point of view or from with the head coaches or within the clubs as well. So it’s been definitely an effort on all parties, and it’s going to be massive for us to get back out there and play again.”

The Silver Ferns coach could also be courtside when some of the games are played in Auckland.

Some franchises like the Mainland Tactix have had to cut staff including their assistant coaches because of the financial impact of Covid-19.

So Dame Noeline has offered to help those head coaches if required.

“It has been floated and just waiting on basically what the coaches want, whether they do have support and they do have their assistant coaches that can go to the games or whether they’ll go it alone - so, my hand is in the air and we’ll just wait and see if I’ll be used in that capacity.

“Whether it’s actually sitting on the side and supporting the head coaches or with my selectors hat on, I will be there every weekend for the 10 weeks.”

Dame Noeline has spoken in the past about missing the onthe-ground coaching she used to get with a franchise team, week in week out.

She said it would allow her to work with Silver Ferns and development squad members.

“But also a lot of other athletes within New Zealand . . . and to support the coaches so, you know I’m willing and able and definitely is a bonus for me to get back out there on court.”

Netball sketches comeback

Plans around community netball’s season are gathering steam.

Mid Canterbury Netball have developed a blueprint for its programme following discussions with local clubs which had continued this week.

The ACL Premier competition starts on July 2 and will run for 11 weeks and will include two full rounds plus one week for straight finals.

There will be promotion/rel-

egation games played between the two rounds.

The competition will wrap up on September 10 Wednesday night social matchups will run for 10 weeks, beginning on July 1 and wrapping on September 2.

The senior competition will run from June 27 to September 5.

A promotion/relegation game will be played between rounds and will break during the middle weekend (July 11) of the school holidays.

The Junior Netball Competi-

tion held on Saturday mornings (Year 5-6 and Year 7-8 pupils) will commence on July 18 and will run for 10 weeks during Term 3.

The FutureFerns programme comprising of Year 3-4 pupils (Fridays) and Year 1-2 (Thursday) age groups will also be played during Term 3.

Mid Canterbury Netball centre manager Erin Tasker said there was an eagerness to get back on the court despite the reduced season.

“It’s more than what we thought it would be for a while

there, so it’s great,” she said.

“From what I’m hearing, the district’s netballers can’t wait to get back out on the court, and we can’t wait either.”

Club representatives were now in talks with their respective members around the proposed season framework.

Season registrations initially cut off on March 25 at which point entries were well placed, Tasker said.

“Now we just need that confirmation from clubs as to whether the number of teams they

planned to have pre-lockdown, is the same number they’ve still got now,” she said.

“Some players may decide they no longer want to play, but there may be others who have decided they want to, and there may be people who have returned to the district in recent weeks who want to join teams.”

Clubs are being asked to confirm team numbers by Friday week.

Netball New Zealand pre-season guidelines state teams can start training from next week.
