Today is a big day for the farming sector and everyone associated with it, with the Government due to announce how it will proceed in the fight against mycoplasma bovis.

There’s been plenty of debate recently over whether the Ministry for Primary Industries’ focus on eradication – which has seen whole herds culled – is the correct one, or whether helping farmers learn to manage the disease is a better option.

Cabinet is meeting today to consider those and other options but Pendarves dairy farmer Frank Peters, who has seen the majority of his 1400-strong herd sent away to be destroyed, does not expect a definitive answer straight away.

“I hear on the grapevine that they’ll look towards eradication over time,” he said.

That would mean letting cows go through calving to see how the disease manifests itself after that.

“They (MPI) could be sitting on the fence for up to six months before they make a decision.

“They want to buy themselves some time and see how far entrenched it (M. bovis) is.

“It’s what we said they should do about two months ago – if cows are allowed to go through the stresses and strains of calving you’re likely to get a much better idea of where it is.”

In the meantime Peters expects a relaxing of attitudes towards farms with depopulation orders so they can carry on for now if they want to, with all farms under restricted place notices likely to be told they can self manage.

For Peters and his family that’s a little late, with the order to destock meaning they only have their winter herd remaining onfarm. They currently have tentative permission to carry that through.

en said the meeting was open to the general public – not just farmers – as everyone should be “desperately concerned”, given farming’s knock-on effect to the wider community in this part of the country.

Due to the significant role agriculture played in the Mid Canterbury economy, he said, outcomes would likely be felt twice as harshly here compared with some other parts of the country.

Salvesen said he had been in touch with MPI and invited it to send representatives to the meeting.

He said DairyNZ chairman Jim van der Poel, who has interests in several Mid Canterbury farms, will be there, along with Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel.

The meeting will be as informative as possible, with time for questions.

“Hopefully we will get some clarity.”

Farmers needed support in what was a very stressful time, Salvesen said.

“We are interdependent with Ashburton and this is a big thing.”

■ COWS KILLED

Cows hit by truck and trailer Several cows were killed and several more euthanised because of their injuries after wandering onto State Highway One near Hinds on Friday night and being hit by a heavy truck and trailer unit.

Hinds volunteer firefighters were called to the bloody scene, about 5km south of Hinds, at 1.50am on Saturday.

They closed the highway, with a short detour available, for 90 minutes while they washed down the road surface and picked up body parts.

Hinds fire chief Dave Kingsbury said it appeared an unknown number of pregnant cows had broken out of an enclosure on the western side of the railway line, crossed the tracks as they headed east and wandered onto the highway and into the truck’s path.

Some of the cows were killed in the collision and others had to be put down because of their horrendous injuries.

Police are reporting eight animals are dead.

He said farmers in the area rallied in the night to contain the mob and return them to the paddock. They joined firefighters in cleaning up the area.

“There was a lot of blood and guts.”

The owner of the cattle had been identified.

Kingsbury said the driver of the south-bound truck and trailer unit would have found it difficult to see the animals at night.

With each beast weighing around 400kg, there was damage to the front of the truck.

The Hinds fire crew was involved in a similar clean-up after a train hit calves on the railway line just north of Hinds several months ago.

“It is one of those things you have to deal with.”

Water plant ‘could cut rates’

A Selwyn resident has come up with an idea that could see the rebirth of the water bottling plant debate in Ashburton.

Alan Peacock, speaking at the Selwyn District Council’s longterm plan submissions, suggested his council should consider becoming part of a joint venture that would see water from the district bottled and sent off-shore.

The community water bottling plant concept would see profits from the business coming back to ratepayers in the form of a rebate, he said.

“Something like this could turn

rates on its head; it would shift the whole rates paradigm.”

He suggested a plant would be developed by an investor with the council as a partner.

The bottled water would be sold overseas and profits would be held in a community trust by the council.

“We need to start thinking outside the square. If they played their cards right, Selwyn could be the first council in the country to be working on rates rebates,” Peacock said.

He suggested that with some of the profits, the council could buy out marginal dairy farms as part of a scheme to divert money into

remedying environmental issues.

The scheme could also be used in Ashburton, he suggested.

And with two consents still active on Ashburton District Council owned land in the North East Business Park, Ashburton could be ahead of Selwyn if the community water bottling plant concept took off.

The council’s consents will expire in September next year, but deputy mayor Neil Brown said until that time they could still be activated.

The idea of a community water bottling plant had some merit, he said, but it would need to be established by a private investor

with the council’s role as facilitator.

“It would require a lot of money to set up so it need to be a public/ private partnership and the council could only be a minority shareholder,” Brown said.

As it did with any proposal, the council would keep an open mind, he said.

“It’s an idea with potential but we’d just facilitate it, call for expressions of interest.

“I don’t think the council would have the appetite to do the whole thing on its own, that’s not our core business.”

Ashburton’s last foray into water bottling came when private

investor Roydon Hartnett wanted to buy the two lots in the business estate with their water consents, to bottle and export water.

There was huge community outcry over the idea of Ashburton water being bottled by an out-oftown business and sold for profit.

Ultimately the council backed out of the sale.

The idea of a community owned bottling plant was not new, Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel said, but like Brown, she said she was open for the issue to be publicly debated.

“But let’s reflect on what happened last time and the tensions there were,” she said.

Glitz and glamour at Mt Hutt ball Mt Hutt College students and their partners will have plenty of photographs to remember the glitz and glamour of their school ball, with the 2018 event on Friday declared a big success.

Around 135 ball-goers and teachers attended the mystery-themed ball at the Methven Heritage Centre where they danced the early part of the night away, before going on to an alcohol-free after-ball party.

Keeping with tradition of unusual ball transport, ballgoers arrived in vintage cars, a tractor, the village takeaway bus and an icecream van.

Guests included students from neighbouring Ashburton College.

Ball committee member Trinity Daniels said the three months of planning paid off with the night going to plan and a lot of fun had by all.

Students voted Jakob Smith king of the ball and Olivia Bryning queen, while teachers voted Kobee King to be wearing the best suit and Clancy Brown the best dress.

King’s dark blue jacket featured a funky pattern while Brown’s dark blue dress was mermaid style with sequins on the front.

Joe Todd and Emma Fairweather were voted the cutest couple.

Daniels said students’ focus would now be in the classroom as they continued their learning towards end-of-year exams.

In brief More cars recalled The number of cars recalled over potentially deadly Takata airbags has grown by more than a million.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has published a revised list adding about 1.1 million vehicles as it recalls the likes of Mercedes Benz C Class, Ford Mondeo and Toyota Yaris. It comes after the largest vehicle recall in New Zealand history in which about 50,000 vehicles were recalled because of airbag safety risks.

The Alpha-type Takata airbags, an older model of the airbags, could deploy unexpectedly, spraying passengers with shrapnel. It is believed they could have caused about 180 injuries and 18 deaths worldwide.

Going pink for breast cancer

Mid Cantabrians seized the chance to support Pink Ribbon breakfasts for breast cancer this month – some got wet while others drank lattes.

Two events in Ashburton yesterday included an aqua exercise session at EA Networks Centre, where everyone wore pink, and a breakfast at Cleaver’s Corner.

Pink Ribbon breakfasts and related events have been held across the country this month, all raising money for breast cancer research and support.

The subject was close to home for the guest speaker at Cleaver’s Corner, Sarah Bartlett.

Bartlett is currently battling breast cancer; she had a bilateral mastectomy after diagnosis last July, followed by chemotherapy.

It was her second encounter with cancer after beating a brain tumour in 2016.

She shared her story with diners keen to support the breast cancer cause.

At the EA Networks Centre, the pink ribbon breakfast aqua class attracted a good number, who arrived dressed in pink. Participants were encouraged to bring a treat to share for breakfast after the class, which was held in the main pool.

The Breast Cancer Foundation funds New Zealand-based research projects to develop new drugs and find better ways to use existing treatments. One research programme to receive funds recently is happening at Wellington’s Victoria University, where they are hoping to develop a therapeutic vaccine to destroy breast cancer by boosting the patient’s immune system.

Five people have died and multiple others were injured in crashes on New Zealand roads at the weekend. The fatalities take the road toll to 159 – well ahead of 146 at the same time last year. A cyclist was killed in a collision with a vehicle on Washdyke Flat Road, Timaru, about 2.30pm on Saturday.

This incident follows four other crashes in the North Island, the most recent of which claimed a life in Puwera, south of Whangarei yesterday morning.

Pizza shop robbery Police are seeking witnesses to a robbery in the Bay of Plenty after a man held up a pizza shop with a hammer. Police were called to attend the robbery at Papamoa Domino’s Pizza at about 10.45pm on Saturday. Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Alan Kingsbury said the offender, a man wearing a grey hoodie and black pants, threatened the single store attendant with a hammer. “The victim was not injured, but the man left the store on foot with a quantity of money.”

Rocket Lab launch Start-up space company Rocket Lab has announced new possible dates for the New Zealand launch of its first fully commercial flight after postponing the original April launch because of technical issues.

The 14-day launch window will open from June 23 to July 6, the company said at the weekend.

Rocket Lab’s 17-metre rocket is set to take off from the Mahia Peninsula in NZ’s North Island, the world’s first privately-owned orbital launch site, carrying payloads from four commercial clients. “Small satellites are playing an increasingly important role in providing crucial services that benefit millions of people on Earth,” Rocket Lab founder and boss Peter Beck said. “Frequent access to orbit is the key to unlocking the potential for these satellites, and Rocket Lab is the only small launch provider currently enabling this access.”

Cinderella sought for pamper package

The excitement of going to the school ball can too often be coupled with the financial stress of getting prepared.

But a generous group of local “fairy godmothers” are on a mission to help, by pampering one lucky Ashburton College lady with a top-to-toe ball package.

Six Ashburton business owners have teamed up for a competition called Seeking Cinderella and as the name suggests – all they need now is a deserving recipient.

Their winner will be beautified with a spray tan from Pure Bronze Tans and hairstyling and make-up courtesy of Tanglez Studio. They will receive an evening bag from Style Footwear, a hire dress of their choice from Dress Collective and a flower corsage to match from Samantha Rose Florist, and have their special night captured on camera with a photoshoot from Emmily Harmer Photography.

Dress Collective owner Melissa Ross said she was inspired to create the competition after talking to a local dad, who was amazed at the cost of the ball.

It’s not uncommon for girls to be spending around $500 on their outfit, hair and make-up, Style Footwear owner Melissa Shimmin said.

“And that’s not over the top, that’s the basics,” she said.

The group of business owners, who met through Women in Business Mid Canterbury, are looking forward to finding and helping their winner.

Nominations are open until June 6 at 5pm, and the winner will be announced on June 13 ahead of the ball on June 29.

Carrot nut loaf 2 T olive oil 1 onion, finely chopped 4 medium carrots (approx 300g), peeled and grated 1 t salt 4 fresh sage leaves, finely chopped 1 C fresh breadcrumbs 1 C nuts, coarsely chopped (any combination of walnuts, cashews, pine nuts, sunflower seeds etc) ½ C flat leaf Parsley, finely chopped 3 eggs, lightly beaten ■ Preheat oven 200°C. Grease and line a 3 cup capacity loaf tin with baking paper.

■ In a fry pan heat the olive oil and gently sauté the onion until soft, then add the carrot, salt and sage.

■ Cook gently for another 5 minutes until the carrot is soft. Set aside to cool.

Few groups are as good at dreaming big – and succeeding – than Ashburton’s own The Big Little Theatre Company.

From humble beginnings just nine years ago the group have grown to global domination, topping the entire world in their Trinity College exams for the past two years with Shakespearian renditions.

The youth theatre company has enthralled local crowds with dozens of classic and contemporary productions at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre, worked with industry-leaders in summer school sessions and raked in accolades and awards at competitions such as the Sheila Winn Shakespeare in Schools’ Festival.

Now, as they approach their 10th anniversary, company director Jackie Heffernan is bringing another tiny dream of hers to life – by taking the company’s senior students to England for three weeks of thespian immersion.

Under invitation from the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and the Royal Academy of Performing Arts, 20 12 to 17-year-old budding performers will learn, train and busk alongside the best of the best next July.

The group have more than earned their stripes as actors, and it’s an experience which the current cohort really deserve, Heffernan said.

“We’re from Ashburton – right on the other side of the world, a place which isn’t exactly steeped in Shakespeare – yet we’re the best in the world at it,” she said.

“Imagine what we could do if we go over there and actually work in the heart of it all.”

Accommodation has already been sorted at the Imperial College of London and Jackie has ideas for a jam-packed itinerary.

Jackie Heffernan they will learn cutting edge immersive theatre, the group will be performing on stage at The Globe Theatre and exploring Shakespeare’s birthplace.

“I’ve always believed that

Shakespeare is the mainstay of acting. It’s like gym for actors,” Heffernan said.

“It’s intellectually very challenging, and it’s used all over the world to train.”

The actors will also be brushing up on their street theatre skills by taking part in the Southbank Festival and busking in Brighton – one of the key settings in their recent production One Man, Two Guvnors.

Heffernan has organised physical theatre training from accomplished variety artist David Ladderman before they go.

“I think busking will be really good for them. It’s learning how to get the audience on your side.”

The group will be making a stop-off at Heffernan’s hometown of Coventry, including the Belgrade Theatre she credits for her own theatrical inspiration.

And naturally the trip will in-

clude a mandatory visit to Trinity College London, where Heffernan said their company name is now engraved in a special plaque for their successes.

The group now have just over a year to fundraise, and Heffernan has been busy brainstorming ideas to garner public support.

One idea is a summer Shakespeare festival in the Ashburton Domain – another, regular sonnets on the chess board.

“I don’t just want to ask for money. I mean, there will be the inevitable cheese rolls … but I hope we can give back to the people of Ashburton, get the town understanding what we’re about.”

Meanwhile, excitement among the actors is high as they approach a trip Heffernan hopes they will never forget.

“It’s going to be pretty special,” she said.

Abortion ban ends In the end, it wasn’t even close.

Irish voters – young and old, male and female, farming types and city-bred folk – endorsed expunging an abortion ban from their largely Catholic country’s constitution by a two-to-one margin, referendum results compiled on Saturday showed.

The decisive outcome of the landmark referendum held on Friday exceeded expectations and was cast as a historic victory for women’s rights.

Polls had given the pro-repeal “yes” side a small lead, but suggested the contest would be close.

Since 1983, the now-repealed Eighth Amendment had forced women seeking to terminate pregnancies to go abroad for abortions, bear children conceived through rape or incest or take illegal measures at home.

As the final tally was announced showing over 66 per cent of voters supported lifting the ban, crowds in the ancient courtyard of Dublin Castle began chanting “Savita! Savita!” in honour of Savita Halappanavar, a 31-year-old dentist who died of sepsis during a protracted miscarriage after being denied an abortion at a Galway hospital in 2012.

With exit polls showing a win for abortion rights campaigners, Prime Minister Leo Varadkar called the apparent victory the “culmination of a quiet revolution”.

Later, he hailed the momentous outcome as a victory for Ireland’s future.

“I said in recent days that this was a once-in-a-generation vote. Today I believe we have voted for the next generation,” said Varadkar, who is Ireland’s first openly gay leader as well as its first prime minister from an ethnic minority group.

The next battleground is likely to be Ireland’s parliament, where the government led by Varadkar hopes to capitalise on the fresh momentum and enact legislation spelling out the conditions under which abortions will be legal for the first time

First it was same-sex marriage, approved here in 2015, and now it will be the consignment to history of the Eighth Amendment.

Man released from Venezuela prison US President Donald Trump has welcomed to the White House an American held without trial for two years in a Venezuelan jail, saying he has undergone a “very tough ordeal”.

Joshua Holt, 26, and his wife arrived at the weekend at Washington Dulles International Airport.

after high-level talks between President Nicolas Maduro and US lawmakers.

US teacher out of hospital after shooting A US science teacher has been released from hospital a day after he was shot while tackling an armed student inside his classroom at an Indiana middle school.

The only other person shot, student Ella Whistler, was in critical but stable condition, according to her family. They released a statement saying they were still trying to process “what happened and why”.

President Donald Trump sent a tweet thanking Jason Seaman “for his heroic act in saving so many precious young lives.

His quick and automatic action is being talked about all over the world!”

Ethan Stonebraker, a student witness, said the shooter was acting suspiciously when he walked into the classroom while the class was taking a test. He told ABC News that Seaman, 29, threw a basketball at the shooter and ran toward the bullets as screaming students sought cover behind a table.

“If it weren’t for him, more of us would have been injured for sure,” the seventh grader said.

Jeremy Seaman told The Indianapolis Star that his brother was shot three times and underwent surgery. He said Jason Sea-

man was a defensive end for Southern Illinois University’s football team and had never been a person to run away.

Investigators said the shooter had asked to be dismissed from the class before returning with two guns. He was arrested “extremely quickly” following the shooting, local police Chief Kevin Jowitt said.

Authorities didn’t release the student’s name or say whether he had been in trouble before but indicated he likely acted alone.

Police said the student didn’t appear to be injured.

NZ works its magic It’s a far cry from the electric rush of New York, but Daniel Radcliffe looked at home in the suburbs of west Auckland.

The Harry Potter star spoke to the Herald on Sunday at Studio West Film Studios in Glen Eden at the weekend as he wrapped up filming his new action movie Guns Akimbo in New Zealand.

The actor took some time out to explore some of Auckland’s beaches during his stay and was spotted working out at Auckland central city gym Anytime Fitness. Radcliffe was due to leave New Zeland this weekend to continue filming in Germany for his new movie, directed

Let’s look for an M. bovis cure M

id Canterbury farmers are bracing themselves for Government’s decision today on whether dairy cows will continue to be culled in the fight against the cattle disease Mycoplasma Bovis.

The district is home to 410 herds and around 340,000 dairy cows; whatever happens will be felt in this community more harshly than in any other because of the fact that agriculture and its related industries are the backbone of our economy.

There are suddenly lots of experts on Mycoplasma Bovis and I certainly won’t pretend to be one. But I have seen firsthand the effect it has had on farmers I know and I feel their pain. In this community almost everyone

has a connection.

The biggest pool of knowledge is most likely to be with those at the coalface so let’s hope that the chiefs in all the different organisations charged with managing/ eradicating this disease are as well informed as they can be.

The disease was first identified in the Oamaru area last July and the vet called to investigate five cases of swollen fetlock went on to be the first person ever to call

MPI about Mycoplasma Bovis.

As at May 24, some 37 properties have been classified as infected (seven in Mid Canterbury), though many, many more are under suspicion or investigation.

Options for the Ministry for Primary Industries/Government include cull in the hope of eradication, or not cull and manage a disease that is in all other countries of the world bar Denmark.

Today’s decision could also be a non-decision, in announcing an abeyance until after calving to gauge the extent of the disease on cows as a stressful stage of the production cycle.

It causes a range of syndromes, most commonly mastitis and arthritis, and makes cows calve early, with the newborns sickly.

I hope the authorities are looking outside the box for solutions too.

Someone dealing with the disease recently suggested to me that MPI could take all the money it is throwing at the cull and give it to our brilliant scientists and ask them to find a cure. This country has some of the best agricultural scientists and innovative farmers on the planet – if anyone can find a way to eradicate Mycoplasma Bovis, it is them.

In the meantime, we can show support to our farmers. In this district, their livelihood is linked to ours.

Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury president Mike Salvesen says Mid Canterbury is also hugely important to the survival

of agriculture on a national level.

His organisation has arranged a public meeting at the Hotel Ashburton on Wednesday night so farmers and others can learn more about how today’s decision will affect them.

It’s not just for farmers, anyone can go, for the disease has ramifications for the wider community.

Isolation compounds stress and worry so this is a chance to get informed, talk to your neighbour, join a group or show some support and sensitivity. Best of all it shows strength.

MPI has been invited and, given our status as a top producing area, they would be rude not to send their best people. Our farmers deserve it. Our district deserves it.

What was in the Budget for the education sector?

A

fter the Labour Party made big promises during the election campaign and created high expectations that education would receive significant funding increases, it is not surprising that teachers have expressed their disappointment with Budget 2018.

Jacinda Ardern and Chris Hipkins talked a lot about this being a ‘rebuild’ Budget for areas like education, yet the percentage of funding going into compulsory education drops from 13.2 per cent this year to 12.8 per cent next year as a result of this Budget.

The increase in schools’ operational funding is less than the average increase under the National Government at 1.6 per cent increase this year, compared to National’s average of around 1.9 per cent.

Essentially then this is business-as-usual funding for growth and increases in schools’ operational funding.

erty budget, he has provided an almost identical amount for school infrastructure to last year and that is to cover the usual growth in student numbers.

Noticeably absent is funding to keep pace with accelerated growth in Auckland which would have required capital spending to double to between $300 million and $350 million a year, or any funding for Labour’s promise to modernise all school buildings by 2030.

Hipkins’ attempt to create a story about ‘holes’ seems more bizarre now – after claiming there was a $215 million hole in the Christchurch Schools Rebuild Programme and promising to speed the programme up, he

has only provided $62 million for the final tranche.

In fact, Labour has failed to deliver on almost all of its promises in education. There will be no iPads for every child, no incentives to scrap donations, and no extra funding for 100 per cent qualified teachers at early learning centres.

The reality is that Labour had blown its education budget well before this Budget by allocating $2.6 billion to making the first year of tertiary study free and increasing student allowances.

Unfortunately this has meant that our universities and polytechnics have not received the additional funding that they were hoping for, despite facing increased administration costs as a result of the fees-free policy.

Another glaring example of this Government under-delivering is teacher supply, where they are spending about two-thirds of what they promised to spend on addressing the issue.

The one positive is the extra funding for learning support

which will be welcomed by the families and schools that need it, though they might wonder what happened to Labour’s promise of uncapping the Ongoing Resourcing Scheme.

What makes the small increase in funding and the many broken promises so surprising is that not only did Labour inherit a strong economy, it is also borrowing more and taxing more.

At a time when the Government is awash with cash, it has failed to get the basics right in planning for growth or getting serious about teacher supply.

Sadly the Government has overpromised and under-delivered to the education sector in this Budget.

A quick glance at a map would suggest it’s a short and sweet drive, but appearances can be

deceiving. I was pleased I had set aside the entire day, because you’ll absolutely need that amount time to truly savour its rolling brilliance.

Truth be told, you’ll want a lot longer to linger in its myriad pockets of untouched paradise.

Maui’s east coast can act like a rain magnet, so chances are the roads will be slippery. And even though the official route spans just over 65 kilometres, the pencil-thin highway is carved into the volcanic cliffs of the hillside.

It’s a very twisty, very winding driving affair, with more than 50 single-lane bridge crossings – yet another reason to take it slowly!

I set off early from Kaanapali, heading east to the gateway town of Paia, just east of Kahului airport.

With its raffish good looks and bohemian shopping, Maui’s Hippie Haven is an ideal pit-stop to top up your fuel and grab some snacks for the road.

The Hana Picnic Lunch Co. opens from 7am, for tasty breakfasts and food to-go.

Their fresh fruit smoothies are unbeatable.

Just three kilometres into the trip, the first of a multitude of waterfall stops beckons, at Twin Falls. I pulled into the turnout and took the gentle hike to reach a fabulous cascade, where I waded into the swimming pool at its base.

Next up, Waikamoi, a fabulous 20 metre-long curtain of cascading water, particularly impressive after rainfall. The steps up to the lookout were slippery – be sure to wear sturdy shoes. (I involuntairily entertained the onlookers with an unceremonious slip down a grassy bank, of bananaskin proportions.)

At Keanae, I jaunted out to the peninsula, wreathed in taro fields. Along the shoreline, muscular breakers battered the jagged outcrops of lava rock.

A beloved marker is at the Halfway to Hana sign, flanking the roadside and adjacent to a welcome food stall.

I bought a loaf of melt-in-yourmouth banana bread from the family-owned store. It was fresh, moist and straight out of heaven’s oven. I also stocked up on their home-made beef jerky and moreish coconut candy.

All along the Road to Hana, enterprising locals operate roadside stalls, selling a spree of fresh produce and crafts.

Underpinning the innocence of the area, many food stalls still operate by way of honesty boxes.

Shortly past the Halfway to Hana, one of the most panoramic views shuffles into frame in the Wailua Valley. This cross-hatch of black sand beaches, the roiling ocean and the undulating sprawl of verdant rainforest is just too good, not to snap.

Puaa Kaa State Park is another essential stop, where a cluster of thunderous waterfalls will fill your Instagram feed, graced with swimming holes at their base.

Falls fanatics should also pull over at the Upper Waikani Falls, a trio of towering cascades, set amid rocks, lush vegetation and crowned with a swimming hole.

Disney couldn’t improve on the dream-like aesthetics.

McCartney in record form

Nadal still king of clay

Eliza McCartney has set a new national record in a second place finish, meanwhile shot-putter Tom Walsh has fallen short of medal contention in the latest Diamond League event, in Oregon.

McCartney was able to set the new New Zealand pole vault record to 4.85 metres in an impressive clearance during the Women’s Pole Vault event.

The 21-year-old said following the finish that she went into yesterday’s competition without any expectations.

“I went into this competition with no expectations and it’s because I’ve been injured for the last couple of weeks, well not really injured, I had a bit of a training niggle.

“I just realised a couple of days ago that when I’ve had that attitude that’s when I jump the highest,” McCartney said.

“Rio was exactly the same, once I was in the final it was the same attitude … it was just jumping my best and that’s what I did today.”

McCartney wasn’t able to beat out 2012 Olympic champion Jennifer Suhr who took the honours on countback.

Things were looking bleak during the 4.50-metre clearance for McCartney who knocked the bar off twice but was able to clear it on the third.

“I knew I had those higher heights in me and I was just not going to give in and I was getting

really tired from jumping over and over again, but I wasn’t going to give in.

“I don’t know where that attitude came from but it just came out and came out at a very good time I guess,” she said.

McCartney said she was stoked with her second-place run at her first competition of the season and that it would set her up for the rest of the year.

“It’s just a confidence booster aye, it’s exactly what you want in the first competition for the season,” she said.

McCartney previously set the national record of 4.82m in Auckland last year.

Walsh started the Men’s Shot Put event well, keeping up with pacesetter and 2016 Olympic gold medalist Ryan Crouser throughout the opening three rounds.

The 2018 Commonwealth Games gold medalist threw 21.84 metres in his second but was unable to keep up with Crouser who powered ahead.

Walsh fouled out in all three of his final attempts, with Crouser crushing the rest of the pack with a meet-record throw of 22.53 metres.

The New Zealander was pushed down the order by Brazilian-national Darlan Romani to third and then fourth by Michal Haratyk who etched himself into second.

The IAAF Diamond League heads to Rome, Italy next weekend.

Barring disaster on the final 115 kilometre flat ceremonial sprint stage early this morning, Bennett will ride into Rome and achieve New Zealand cycling history.

No Kiwi has ever finished in the top 10 at the Giro, while eighth overall would be the best Grand Tour result accomplished by a New Zealand rider, eclipsing Bennett’s 10th at the Vuelta a Espana in 2016.

Despite those laudable honours, Bennett is not entirely overjoyed by his efforts.

He wanted more at the Giro – a top five finish, or a stage win perhaps, but a combination of bad luck and not quite being in his

best form cut short those hopes.

Although noting his high expectations, Bennett still deserves major plaudits – five years ago, the thought of a New Zealander finishing eighth in a Grand Tour would have been absurd, and the fact that it could now even be seen in some circles as a slight disappointment is a huge credit to Bennett’s rise.

He will cross the line in Rome 13 minutes and 17 seconds behind overall victor Chris Froome, who – barring a crash or mechanical problem – sealed his first Giro title and third consecutive Grand Tour victory.

Froome easily fended off a late barrage of attacks from Tom Dumoulin on stage 20, extending his lead to 46 seconds. The penultimate stage consisted of three difficult climbs, and after

George Bennett navigating the first two with little dramas, Dumoulin launched his all-or-nothing effort with nine kilometres to go on the final climb.

His first attack immediately split the final 12 riders into two groups, with Bennett in the sec-

ond group, and he kept firing – four attacks in total, but Froome countered them all, and even launched a brief attack of his own to prove his dominance.

Bennett rolled home 42 seconds later, doing enough to secure eighth overall. He jumped up one spot, after the remarkable collapse of Thibaut Pinot.

Pinot, who was in third overall, looked on track for his first Giro podium finish, before he cracked with 41.1 kilometres to go. Much like the unfortunate Esteban Chaves and Simon Yates before him, the Frenchman could barely push the pedals, and ended up losing a staggering 45 minutes.

Pinot’s loss was Bennett’s gain, and all going to plan, he will cruise home in Rome with another slice of New Zealand cycling history.

During an injury-plagued spell that ran from November to March, Rafael Nadal withdrew from six successive tournaments.

According to the doom-mongers, his future as a grand slam contender stood in doubt.

Yet over the past six weeks, Nadal has proved that he is not just the king of clay but the king of comebacks, too.

Once Nadal’s feet had touched the red dirt in Monte Carlo, he began a winning streak that has continued all the way to Roland Garros – with the exception of a single reverse at the hands of Dominic Thiem in Madrid.

His unbroken run of 50 straight sets on clay set a world record.

All of which begs two intriguing questions.

Is Nadal playing better than ever? Or is the competition weaker than before?

A little bit of both, according to leading tennis statisticians Graeme Spence, Stephanie Kovalchik and Machar Reid from Melbourne-based Game Insight Group.

According to Elo ratings (which are different to the ATP’s rankings because they focus on who you are playing, not where or when), Nadal faced a lower standard of opponent in 2017 and 2018 than he had in previous seasons.

Much of this comes down to injuries and form slumps among the sport’s established stars, especially the “Big Four”.

Nadal hasn’t played Andy Murray for 25 months, and faced Novak Djokovic only once last year – the lowest seasonal incidence of this high-frequency rivalry since 2006.

Admittedly, the great NadalRoger Federer feud enjoyed a revival.

There were four meetings in 2017, all of which Federer won.

But none was on clay, as Federer has effectively retired from that surface.

Turning to Nadal’s performances, the hiring of coach Carlos Moya – a former world No1 – at the end of 2016 proved to be a masterstroke.

Historically, the figures show Nadal’s clay court dominance has grown through his career, with the exception of a hiatus in 2015 and 2016.

Nadal’s search for an 11th Roland Garros title starts against familiar foe Alexandr Dolgopolov, who he has beaten seven times in nine matches.

The pair have met only three times on clay, though, with Nadal being victorious on all of those occasions.

Lacklustre Warriors downed

By DaviD Skipwith Coach Stephen Kearney is at a loss to explain why the Warriors continue to struggle to match the passion and physicality of visiting sides after Saturday night’s 30-10 defeat to South Sydney.

The Warriors began positively with front-rower Agnatius Passi scoring inside four minutes, but it all went downhill from there, with the Rabbitohs forwards dominating the home side in the five-tries-to-two victory at Mt Smart Stadium.

The result continues an inconsistent run that’s seen them lose four of their last seven games, and in those defeats they have leaked 139 points while managing just 38 in reply.

Worryingly, three of those losses have been in front of their home fans, and the lacklustre performance against the Rabbitohs mirrored the submissive

nature of their 32-0 loss to the Sydney Roosters a fortnight ago.

Kearney said he will spend next week’s bye round working together with assistant coaches Andrew McFadden, Stacey Jones and Tony Iro, to find a remedy for the side’s lack of steel and aggression in both attack and defence.

“We started well but overall it’s been a bit of a common theme where teams coming here bring their best footy and physically we couldn’t match it with them tonight,” said Kearney.

“So that’s something that we need to address.

“We were trying really hard but we didn’t have the flow that we’ve had in our attack.

“It just didn’t click for us tonight so it’s disappointing.

“We do get a break next week and me and the other coaches will be working out how we can arrest teams coming here and beating us up physically and

that’s our job to do that.”

Warriors captain and fatherto-be Roger Tuivasa-Sheck tried hard to lift his side before he limped off with an ankle injury in the 72nd minute.

The 26-year-old left the sheds on crutches with his leg in a moonboot and will have scans today.

Kearney paid tribute to Tuivasa-Sheck’s ability to put his personal concerns aside, as his fiancée Ashley Walker continues to await the arrival of their first baby.

“He’s done terribly well considering the circumstances,” he said.

“He’s been on tenterhooks the whole week and sometimes when you come into a contest with something like that in your mind it can be difficult and challenging.

“He’s a thorough professional and he handles that sort of thing

well. It’s a pretty big distraction but he puts it to the side and tonight he played pretty well.”

Kearney conceded the side’s attack had suffered in the absence of injured halfback Mason Lino, with fill-in No 7 Blake Green burdened with the organising and kicking duties alongside fill-in five-eighth Peta Hiku.

“We just had the one kicker and Greeny trying to organise stuff and it puts a lot of pressure on him.

“They were really going after him when he had the footy, when he was kicking or trying to set up plays.

“In terms of how much effect it had I’m not 100 per cent sure, but it does throw a bit of that out in terms of the flow of our attack.”

The result sees the Warriors drop one spot to fourth on the premiership ladder ahead of their next game against Manly in Christchurch on June 9. - NZME

Maloney ‘Blues’ best playmaker’

By Matt Encarnacion James Maloney is the best playmaker in NSW heading into this year’s State of Origin series, Penrith coach Anthony Griffin has declared.

Panthers halves Maloney and Nathan Cleary steered their side to the top of the NRL ladder in a surprise 28-2 rout of St George Illawarra on Saturday.

And their efforts could also land them a prized NSW jumper following two weeks of concerns by the Blues hierarchy over Maloney’s defence this season.

“I’m a Queenslander so I hope (Maloney) don’t get picked.

“I think all of Queensland will

be hoping he doesn’t get picked,” Griffin said.

“But I hope he gets there. He’s done a tremendous job with our team. He’s an experienced playmaker and if he’s not there, it’ll be great for the club but terrible for Jimmy.

“With my Maroon cap on, I think he’s NSW’s best playmaker at the moment. He’s got to be there.”

Maloney admitted he would be disappointed if his name wasn’t read out today.

“Not much more I can do now.

Nick Cotric got the home side pumping when he scored two tries in five minutes before assisting fullback Jack Wighton late in the game. Wighton’s try was converted by Jarrod Croker, levelling the score at 20-20 with three minutes left. The 28-year-old Auckland-born front-rower or lock has agreed to return home to take up a three-year deal believed to be worth around $500,000 a season that will keep him at the Warriors until the end of 2021. The Warriors began discussions with Ah Mau earlier this season and beat out offers from several rival clubs including the Knights, Titans, and Panthers. Rakaia will be the sole Mid Canterbury side contesting the major prize of the Country Combined Rugby competition after they topped a competitive section with a narrow victory against Kaiapoi on Sunday.

Last year’s competition runners up came from behind to beat their rivals, down by 15 points at one stage in the match, to win 33-29.

While they have shown that they are capable of clawing their way back into a match, Wayne Foxcroft will be keen to work on getting off to better starts as the knockout stage of the competition begins this weekend.

As top qualifier in Section B, they get the right to host one of the four quarter-finals and will see Saracens roll their way through the gates of the Rakaia Domain on Saturday to try and spoil their party.

Another victory this week would see them hosting a semifinal seven days later, with a shot at hometown advantage for the final.

Rakaia were one of three Mid Canterbury sides to win on the weekend with Southern and Methven also picking up victories while Celtic sat the week out with the bye.

Methven were dominant as expected against Rolleston at the Methven Domain, winning 6121.

Andy Pearce’s men have undoubtedly continued to improve over the course of the season and are warming nicely towards the Watters Cup. Hugh Griffiths was the star of the show on Saturday, scoring four tries in his side’s effort.

The nuggety little winger has been a form player all season and is sure to be a contender for higher honours when the representative selectors sit down to

work out their squads.

Celtic, who held a spot in the top four of Section A going into last weekend but had the bye – could only watch as live updates came through that saw them bumped to outside of a spot in the Cup section of the competition.

That will come as a major disappointment to Shane Enright’s men who for many parts of the season looked a side who could have potentially pushed right into the serious part of the competition.

They will instead now have to turn around and focus on a small Watters Cup precursor when they clash with Southern at Hinds next Saturday.

Southern were never in contention for the top four heading into the final weekend of pool play, but momentum is a wonderful thing and they grabbed some more of it with a victory over Hornby, 33-20.

While they got the win, the game was far from convincing and numbers are proving to be a real issue with some former players getting back into the gear including co-coach Jason Gill.

That will be a major focus as the Watters Cup looms, but with a core nucleus of experience and a powerful forward pack Southern will always be a contender.

Hampstead’s main target for the pool play rounds, Ashley, proved a target too far as they failed to get their first win on the board with a 24-33 loss away from home.

They head down into the plaque division of the competition next week where they will take on another winless side in Rolleston in the Selwyn District.

Methven will head north as well to take on Ohoka in the Plate Division.

Australian celebrations after finally beating a Kiwi Super Rugby opponent have been shut down after just one week, with the NSW Waratahs falling short 39-27 against the Chiefs in an epic encounter in Hamilton.

The Waratahs got off to a flyer on Saturday night, leading 14-0, and looked in great shape to back up their win over the Highlanders, which ended 40 straight losses for Australian teams against Kiwi foes.

The game was closer than the scoreline suggests, with just two points separating the teams with five minutes remaining.

But Chiefs playmaker Damian McKenzie scored his second try after the final siren to claim a bonus-point win and ensure the Waratahs left empty-handed.

The loss continued another miserable record – no Australian team has been able to win on New Zealand soil in more than three years, with a Michael Cheikacoached Waratahs outfit the last to do so against the Hurricanes.

NSW big guns Kurtley Beale, Israel Folau and skipper Michael Hooper stood up, and the team was desperately unlucky not to at least pick up a bonus point.

They now hold just a one-point lead over the Melbourne Rebels in the Australian conference.

The Waratahs can at least take confidence from their recent results with the finals looming, in recent weeks falling to the Crusaders by two points and the Blues by three.

“We’re getting used to starting well against New Zealand teams and then the Chiefs did very well to battle back, as we knew they would,” Waratahs coach Daryl Gibson said. “It’s disappointing.

We lost some big moments out there through some good pressure from them and some tactically poor play from us.

“That’s three New Zealand games we’ve lost and we’ve had an opportunity to win them, and learning from those moments is the big thing this team is going to carry forward.”

While there were plenty of highlights, NSW let themselves down with a poor tactical kicking game. Turnovers through pushed passes also hurt them.

Trailing 19-14 at halftime, NSW looked as if they’d level early in the second half but the final pass from Beale to Will Miller was ruled forward and with the referee playing advantage, they settled for a penalty.

The second half remained a fierce battle as the teams traded blows, with the Waratahs levelling through a converted Beale try in the 52nd minute.

Winger Toni Pulu scored his second of the night in the 57th minute from a clever Brad Weber kick and the home team again pulled away. McKenzie iced a penalty in the 75th minute and scored the final try to cap the win.

In brief Brumbies just hang on A famous win will be the catalyst for crowds returning to Brumbies home games. That’s what coach Dan McKellar is hoping after the ACT team defied the odds in South Africa yesterday morning to defeat the Bulls 38-28. The Brumbies were down to 14 men for the final 17 minutes but managed to run over the top of the Pretoria-based Super Rugby franchise. The result broke a five-game losing streak and will go down as one of the most courageous wins in club history.

That is especially true in freezing rain on an early-winter’s night in Christchurch in front of a reported 16,000 onlookers doing their best to shelter from the conditions in a stadium held together by scaffolding.

String enough wins together and you put yourself in a position to win the competition.

If the Crusaders do go on to defend their title on August 4, then mark down their 24-13 win over the Hurricanes at AMI Stadium as one of their biggest moments of the regular season.

One of world rugby’s toughest men has rubbished the introduction of what has been dubbed the “nipple rule”. In an effort to halt the increase in head injuries and concussion, World Rugby will trial rule changes at under-20 competitions starting this week in France that lower the height of tackles. The acceptable height of a tackle will be lowered from the shoulders to “below the nipple line”, according to the governing body. The announcement was met with widespread ridicule online, but Queensland Reds coach and former All Blacks lock Brad Thorn was perhaps the most critical of the move.

Whitelock and Crotty are recovering from concussion and will be monitored during the week.

Perry is unlikely to be involved after straining a hamstring on All Blacks duty last Tuesday.

But such is the belief in this team – both as a collective and as individuals – that whoever takes the field at Waikato Stadium will do so with high expectations.

If they beat the Chiefs then their last two round-robin matches are at home against the Highlanders and Blues.

Win those and they will qualify for a home final should they get that far.

It’s difficult to see them being beaten in the big dance on their home ground, and after making headlines all around the world with his elaborate moves on the hallowed surface of Johannesburg’s Ellis Park following the Crusaders’ historic final win over the Lions last year, a wet shirt and trousers won’t worry Robertson a bit.

At Melbourne, the Rebels beat the Sunwolves 40-13, holding the Tokyo-based side scoreless in the second half after leading by eight points after 40 minutes. The Sunwolves came into the match on a two-match winning streak after losing their first nine games. The Jaguares won their sixth match in a row, beating South Africa’s Durban-based Sharks 29-13 at Buenos Aires. Left wing Ramiro Moyano scored three tries on his return to the starting lineup. - AAP

Bereavement leave The Highlanders will spend at least another week without head coach Aaron Mauger who is on bereavement leave. While his team travelled to Brisbane to take on the Reds, Mauger was in Christchurch with his family to spend time with his unwell mother. Interim head coach Mark Hammett told Stuff that Mauger’s mother died during the Highlanders 18-15 win over the Reds. Hammett added that he wouldn’t play any part in preparing the southern franchise for their showdown against the Hurricanes next week. The Highlanders were able to edge out the Reds with Hammett at the helm and he would stay there for next week’s game.

Mo’unga intent on making every post a winner If there were any doubts about whether Richie Mo’unga is the second-best first-five in the country, they must be gone now.

On his 24th birthday, the Crusaders No10 ensured there would be only one team celebrating on a typically cold and wet Christchurch winter evening on Friday with a performance that will have made his effervescent coach Scott Robertson flush with pleasure and

probably the All Blacks coaches, too.

It’s not that they will have gone off Beauden Barrett, it’s just the fact that they have had it confirmed that Mo’unga is a quality player who lives for the big matches and thrives under pressure.

They will know, too, that Damian McKenzie, a player with a slightly different skill set, is set for a bench role against the French

next month, but Mo’unga’s form is such that he would probably start that first test at Eden Park on June 9 should Barrett fall over.

There is no doubt his forward pack set the table and laid out the trimmings with a typically robust and hard-edged display but it was Mo’unga who directed the entertainment for this 24-13 victory which kept his team on top of the Super Rugby table.

This time last year, Leon MacDonald gave Mo’unga a huge compliment when he compared his temperament, if not quite yet his ability, to the great Dan Carter.

After a late start due to injury last season, Mo’unga was a big reason why the Crusaders won their first title in nine years.

After coming back stronger from a broken jaw this campaign, he is looming as a key cog in the

machine as they seek to defend the title.

Now the Crusaders will want to take their momentum into their next game against the Chiefs in Hamilton before their bye.

Home matches against the Highlanders and Blues remain after that. Robertson’s men remain masters of their own destiny and in Mo’unga, they have just about the best ringmaster of all. - NZME

LeBron leads for Cavs

Magic finally register win

The Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic claimed their first win of this year’s ANZ Premiership season against the Northern Stars at Auckland’s Pulman Arena.

In the club’s longest losing streak, the Magic were defeated across three consecutive matches in the opening three rounds.

But after what Magic captain Casey Kopua described as an “embarrassing” start to the season, the previously winless side responded to the call to step up and claimed a much-needed 6453 victory.

With a promising front line featuring Silver Fern Samantha Sinclair and South African import Lenize Potgieter, who has shot the highest average goals of the season so far, the Magic made sure their determined presence was felt.

The Waikato side were still short of their Silver Fern defender Kelly Jury, who suffered a dislocated shoulder injury back in round two, but young up-and-coming defender Kate Lloyd was keen to step-up to the plate.

Defending alongside Kopua, the pair snatched every intercept they could from Stars mid-courters Grace Kara and Holly Fowler as the Northern side struggled to successfully feed the ball to their shooters.

The Stars found their rhythm in the second half of the match with faster play and fewer mistakes.

But Stars shooting duo Maia Wilson and Paula Griffin couldn’t keep up with the always accurate Potgieter, who maintained an unstoppable 100 per cent shooting rate for the first two quarters.

Stars shooter Ellen Halpenny took to the court in place of Wilson as Griffin moved into goal shoot, but the mid-quarter change didn’t take effect as the Magic held their lead 30-25 at halftime.

As the Stars struggled to keep possession of the ball, the Magic continued to clock up points extending their promising lead in the final quarters.

In a desperate bid to make back lost ground, Stars coach Kiri Wills opted for her opening combinations, bringing Wilson back into goal shoot and Ama Agbeze on defence.

But the return of the two internationally experienced players wasn’t enough to keep the Stars in the match as the Magic went from strength-to-strength in a strong final quarter performance.

Last night’s win will see the Magic move up from the bottom of the ANZ Premiership ladder to lead the Stars in fifth place by one point.

But the Magic will need to follow-up their win in round five against the tenacious Mainland Tactix next week if they wish to claw themselves closer to the top of the leaderboard.

The Tactix will play the Northern Mystics tonight at Christchurch’s Horncastle Arena after narrowly defeating the Stars last Wednesday 49-48 in their first home stadium win.

Wounded and fatigued, LeBron James put in a superhuman performance that was extraordinary even for his standards to carry the Cleveland Cavaliers to victory over the Boston Celtics in the NBA playoffs.

The Cavs won 109-99 on Saturday to even the Eastern Conference Finals 3-all and setting up a do-or-die game seven in Boston today.

Cleveland lost All-Star forward Kevin Love to a head clash in the first quarter, but that’s when James found another gear, taking control of the game with 46 points, 11 rebounds, nine assists and three steals.

It was his seventh 40-point game in this year’s playoffs.

“The best player in the game,” Celtics coach Brad Stevens said.

Cavaliers’ coach Tyronn Lue has viewed James’ heroics many times, but on Saturday in Cleveland, with his team’s season over with a loss, he witnessed something special.

“Greatness,” Lue said, describing James. “Champion pedigree.”

The Celtics made a late push, but James snuffed it out with massive back-to-back threepointers in the final two minutes.

James did receive support from point guard George Hill’s 20 points and bench players Jeff Green and Nance Jr with 14 and 10 points respectively.

Australian big man Aron Baynes was Boston’s starting centre but had his most underwhelming game of the series, going scoreless and grabbing four rebounds.

The Celtics’ All-Star forward Al Horford was also unusually quiet with just six points while guard Terry Rozier had 28 and Jaylen Brown 27 points.

Meanwhile in yesterday’s game, an awful start followed by three quarters of utter dominance, spot-on shot-making and beautiful defence – even against one of the game’s greatest and hardest to stop in James Harden.

The Rams’ grind-out 80-72 victory over the Mountain Airs at Christchurch’s Cowles Stadium on Saturday night kept the Cantabs in top spot on the table with a 5-1 record, with all five starters scoring in double-figures for the southerners, headed by classy import forward Winston Shepard’s almost triple-double of 19 points, nine rebounds and nine assists.

And a second defeat in as many nights, following Friday night’s 91-58 loss at the Nelson Giants, sinks Taranaki to 2-5, and with plenty of work to do if they hope to threaten the top four.

The Rams held their nerve and when their import Julian Williams-Washburn nailed his first triple of the game with 1:04 remaining to put the home side out to 76-70 the victory was in the bag.

Motu Top Mach dominates Motu Top Mach was dominant when winning at Ascot Park on Saturday and for many of his connections it brought hope it was just the forerunner to even greater success at Cambridge next week.

His trainer, Graeme Anderson, shares the ownership of the Mach Three juvenile with Gerald Cayford, Ray Chalklin, Stuart Gillan, Tony Gow, Stephen Pulley and the Hunter Boys Syndicate.

Chalklin, Gillan’s wife Pauline, Gow, Pulley and Anderson also share in the ownership of Eamon Maguire.

Prepared by Anderson to win last season’s Southern Supremacy Stakes, Eamon Maguire has since won the Messenger from the All Stars stable and lines up for them again in the four-yearold Emerald next Saturday.

brother to Motu Moonbeam.

A daughter of Bettor’s Delight, Motu Moonbeam won five from 25 in New Zealand before heading to the United States where she has fashioned an excellent record.

Among her many good performances was a second to Rocker Band in the Southern Belle Speed Series Final at Winton in 2016, clocking 1:55.6.

“She was the reason I bought this one,” Anderson said of the purchase of Motu Top Mach for $8000 at the premier sale in 2017.

“Mark Fuller broke him in, when he came to me he was gaited and bullet proof, it’s made my job easy.”

On debut at Gore last week, Motu Top Mach came up against one better in the form of Artstanding, the half-brother to Lazarus.

Mudlark revels in Wellington ground Gallant mare Trisha Lea struck conditions to her liking at Trentham yesterday and she duly ran up to the stable’s expectations.

The six-year-old has proved herself to be adept on rain-affected going and she produced a plucky performance to win the WRC Life Members’ Trentham Gold Cup (2200m).

“She’s pretty tough and she loves ground like this,” Opaki trainer Kylie Little said.

Trisha Lea went in to the race at the top of her game, having been successful at her previous start on a Heavy 11 track at Awapuni.

She was ridden there by apprentice Madan Singh and he again took the reins on Saturday.

They made the early running before they were clearly headed before the turn, but Trisha Lea rallied strongly in the closing 200m for the fifth win of her career.

“She’s a typical Zed and needs these wet tracks and a bit of ground,” Little said.

“We’re looking forward to the winter with her.”

Hard To Be Humble gave a bold account of herself in the second start of her current campaign with a late finish for second.

Trainer Janelle Millar is keen to head north next month with the daughter of Roc de Cambes for a crack at the Orora Kiwi Packaging Kiwifruit Cup (2100m) at Tauranga on June 23.

Hard To Be Humble’s effort turned the tables on Princess Dillon, who had beaten her at their previous meeting at New Plymouth.

The latter, who was sent out favourite for the event, went to the front 500m from home but couldn’t sustain her effort in the trying conditions and had to settle for third.

Dark night for the Reds Liverpool’s hopes of lifting the Champions League title seemed to disappear the moment Mohamed Salah left the pitch in tears with a shoulder injury.

The loss of the Egypt striker after a tussle with Sergio Ramos was a devastating blow to Jurgen Klopp’s side, who had begun positively against 12-time European champions Real Madrid.

But after 30 minutes the Reds were without their standout player, who had scored 44 goals for them this season.

On came match-rusty midfielder Adam Lallana, and the momentum was suddenly with Real.

Salah had initially carried on after treatment, but was soon lying on the ground in pain.

He was consoled by Cristiano Ronaldo before the trudging off a dejected figure.

Shocked Liverpool fans knew who the villain was.

They jeered Real captain Ramos, who appeared to have had Salah in an armlock as they fell to the ground, every time he was on the ball.

But for Liverpool, it got worse.

Real defender and Spain international Dani Carvajal had to go off in the 36th minute after lying on the ground in anguish with what appeared to be an ankle injury.

With the World Cup around the corner, both Egypt and Spain will now be anxiously hoping the injuries are not as bad as they appeared.

The Ashburton Barbarians rugby league team have bounced back from a loss last weekend to demolish Marist Saints Gold 42-4 at Robilliard Park in Ashburton on Saturday.

The win keeps them hot on the heels of Burnham, who inflicted their only loss so far this season in Canterbury Rugby League’s division one competition.

The Ashburton side spent last week focused more on fitness and trainer Len Wil-

son said their hard work at practice paid off.

He said the cardio work during the week included wrestling, as well as other drills designed to be fun alongside the hard work.

“Wresting is fundamental to tackling in both rugby league and rugby … being able to wrestle your man to the ground.

“A lot of the NRL clubs incorporate it.”

Wilson said Marist was without several key players for Saturday’s game and the Barbarians took full advantage, to be up by

a commanding 20-0 at half time.

The tries continued in the second half with the final score 42-4.

The Barbarians’ tries came from Darryn Bolt, Xavier Bartlett (two), Reuben Browne (two), Steve Gamble, Hemi Witehira and Marvin Brown.

Brown kicked five conversions.

Wilson said the pace of the game was a good test of fitness and his players of the day were Pukenga Pukenga and Arron Heke.

“They’re both big boys and their workrate

around the field today was very impressive.”

The Barbarians’ performance also drew praise from the opposition coach, who said he was impressed by the Ashburton side’s skill level.

Wilson, who moved from Pukekohe to Ashburton recently, said the game had a lot to offer youngsters who did not want to play rugby and he was enjoying being part of the game’s resurgence in Mid Canterbury.

He has played rugby league in Australia and rugby in New Zealand.
