A Hinds fireman has slammed a proposal that could dramatically change the way rural fire services are run in Mid Canterbury. The Department of Internal Affairs yesterday released a discussion document that outlined three different options for the future structure of fire services in New Zealand. The document is the Government’s response to the findings of the independent Fire Review Panel, which called for reform in 2012. The review found that fire services

were under increased pressure, resulting in health and safety issues for rural firefighters, shortages of volunteers, inefficiencies and unclear lines of responsibility. The three proposed options range from making small changes to the existing structure to completely overhauling the way fire services are delivered. The first option, called “enhanced status quo”, would see urban, rural and volunteer fire services remain as separate entities and better support would be available for volunteer brigades. new boundaries for rural fire districts. There would be increased oversight and national support for fire services through service agreements. The third and final option would disestablish Rural Fire Authorities and incorporate volunteer brigades into one national service. That third option means the Ashburton District Council would no longer have any role in delivering rural fire services.
