Gun threat taken seriously

Police are urging people to report anything they think is out of the ordinary after receiving second-hand information on a threat of gun violence in Ashburton.

Police said that apparently a man based in Ashburton was threatening, via social media, to “shoot up the town” and sent an image to a friend.

A police spokesperson said officers had spoken with the individual and established that there was no intent to harm.

No offence was committed and the man was spoken to about the incident

Senior sergeant Matt Emery said police have to take every threat seriously, even if they prove to be a silly off-hand comment.

“At the moment everyone is a lot more vigilant and we have to take every threat as it is,” he said.

“We always take threats seriously until we can prove that they are not valid.”

Emery said following the terrorist attack in Christchurch nearly two weeks ago, people were a lot more aware of risks.

“If someone has concerns and something doesn’t seem right give us a call,” he said.

As a result of information from the public, a search warrant was executed at a St Martins property late Tuesday where police discovered a number of firearms.

The 54-year-old man sought in relation to these firearms died following a serious incident in Christchurch on Wednesday morning.

Hinds now stand tall in Hinds

An idea that was first sown more than 20 years ago has now blossomed in to two hinds standing watch over State Highway One through Hinds.

Two large and life-like hinds, female deer, have been crafted from steel and concrete by a wildlife sculptor and were unveiled to a small crowd at the Hinds Domain yesterday.

The rock was placed there as part of a project to welcome in the new millennium and now the Hinds and Districts Lions Club is marking the next 20 years by adding the hinds.

The original idea to place the hinds sculptures came from Alan Taggart, who proposed the idea at a community meeting.

The idea that was taken from the meeting was to place the large limestone block, and it was not until last year that the Hinds and District Lions decided to take up the idea.

“They are absolutely fabulous,” Taggart said.

Taggart’s initial idea proposed the deer be taxidermied animals, but he said he was impressed with the detail of the sculptures that were made from re-enforced steel, chicken wire and concrete by animal sculptor Clive Seddon.

The larger of the two hinds weighs about 420kg and stands taller than the average man. They are permanently fixed to a concrete pad already poured in front of the millennium rock.

The hinds were a pointer to the district’s agricultural scene, which includes deer farmers, and a play on words of the township’s name, club spokesman Dave Thomson said.

Delivering a strong message

An event planned for Ashburton in June will give the community a firsthand opportunity to hear two people share the experiences that have helped them build the resilience needed to cope with life changing events.

Ashburton’s Cancer Society team is bringing Julie Zarifeh and Jake Bailey to town in June to speak about coping with tragedy and building the resilience needed to not just survive but to move on with your life.

Zarifeh lost her husband to cancer and her son Sam in a rafting accident and knows what it is to face adversity and to continue to live through tragedy.

She is a clinical psychololgist working with the Nw Zaland Institute of Wellbeing and Resilience.

Jake Bailey became a very public figure when he delivered a moving speech from his wheelchair at Chrsitchurch Boys’ High School prizegiving in 2015.

A week before he was to deliver his speech he was diagnosed

with Burketts non-Hodgkinson lymphoma and given just three weeks to live if he did not receive treatment.

He has been in remission since 2016 and has gone on to share his story through a book, What Cancer Taught Me and as a public speaker.

At their Ashburton events they will speak about survivorship and the importance of resilience as a key personal quality when it comes to coping with the tough challenges that are too often part of life.

While the event is being organised by the Cancer Society, manager Annie Bonifant said it was an event for the whole community.

“In our work we are seeing a growing demand for emotial support, counselling and mental health services, not just for our clients and their immediate families, but in the wider community,” she said.

“It’s about having the tools to deal with the speedbumps in life.”

The cancer society was well

supported by the community and by bringing the two speakers to AShsburton and making the events open to the public and to college students, it was a way of giving back, Bonifant said.

The public event will be held in the Ashburton Event Centre at 5.30pm on June 6 and two free of charge sessions will be held for college students that morning.

For the public event, Bonifant said ticket prices had been kept as low as possible to ensure the event was as affordable as possible.

Edna’s kept the Flash Ash in tip-top shape for 37 years Sue Newman

Edna Drummond has played a small but important role in the lives of millions of people from around the world, but few would have known her name.

Over the past 37 years Edna has almost single handedly ensured that every sheet, pillow case, table cloth and table napkin used at Hotel Ashburton was in perfect condition – clean, well-ironed and in the case of tablecloths and napkins, well starched too.

But that long tour of duty in the hotel’s laundry has ended. Edna’s opted for retirement and her staff at the hotel say the place won’t be the same without their quiet workmate.

She may have been quiet, but Edna ruled that laundry with an iron fist, one workmate said.

With her children at school, Edna decided it was time to go back to work, the laundry job came up and she signed on, never imagining she’d still be on the pay roll 37 years later.

Over all of those years anyone living in the manager’s residence could set their clock by her arrival at and departure from

work – 7am and 3.30pm on the dot.

“I’ve worked here through many changes in the laundry and many changes in hotel staff and I’ve enjoyed my years with the trust,” she said.

Ensuring the hotel’s linen was the whitest and cleanest it could be was a challenge but one she took real pride in, Edna said.

Her dedication to the hotel’s linens included taking worn items home to mend rather than seeing table cloths in particular go out into the public eye less than perfect.

For most of her years at the hotel, Edna worked for the Ashburton Trust until it leased the business to private operators and she said she’d worked for some good managers.

Those years had just slipped by but she’d loved every minute of that time, Edna said.

“I’ve probably washed millions and millions of sheets - I wish I’d had a dollar for every one I’ve washed.”

She celebrated her long service yesterday with a morning tea and a reunion with workmates from the past as well as Edna Drummond (left) with friend and workmate Tracy Shreeve, signing off after 37 years in the Hotel Ashburton laundry.

Project attracts strong opinions

The numbers may not be large, but Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel said she’s heartened by the positive response from most submitters on the Ashburton District’s new civic centre and library.

Four choices are on the drawing board, ranging from $39 million to $53 million, with the council’s preference for the second-most expensive option, $45 million.

A number are saying the council should go for the most expensive option with the greatest range of facilities in the new library and Favel said it was good to see people taking a long view of the project and considering what would be best for the district many years out.

“It’s a pleasant surprise to see this and that response reflects what we were hearing at the evening public session last

week,” she said.

The council held two meetings where the community could hear details of the project and the four options on the table.

There was tepid support for the project at the afternoon session, but the evening meeting saw several speakers suggest the council should build the best possible complex to ensure it would continue to meet community needs well into the future.

Extensive community consultation has already been undertaken by the council around the site for the new complex, which was initially anticipated to cost $22m. That estimate proved to be well short of the actual cost and the council has gone back to the community with new costings over four options.

The variable in each option is the library with size and features changing according to cost.

Several submitters area urging

the council to do more, to spend $53m to future-proof the library.

Some of those comments include: “I have spoken with professionals working with teens and they believe there is a need for a teen space in town….having additional meeting rooms is future-proofing, while having an events space will allow small and inexpensive children-centric shows … we still need a library even at the 21st Century.”

“The bigger the better as the population is growing every year.

OK, it is more expansive now but what if we need bigger facilities in 10 years’ time to meet the town needs?

“For an extra $8m now which, in the big scheme of things is not a lot of money, we are future-proofing this civic building for generations to come. I am sad that this wasn’t thought about when EA Networks pool was built

as it could have been so much better.”

“I want my children and grandchildren to have a great place in which they can expand their minds and find some peace in this fast distracting and sometimes overbearing world … I also believe that expanding and having better facilities for our community and youth would also bring more people to our town.”

“I feel we have made mistakes before by not going “all the way” with new ventures. The future needs to be well considered with our ever growing and evolving community.”

“We need to look long-term.

Support for the most expensive option is not universal among

submitters, however, and several are critical of the process the council has followed. Some said the council appeared to have made its decision and that a poll should have been held.

Some of those comments include: “Quake proof existing buildings … spend extra money on mental health and suicide awareness in the district.”

“It is very disappointing once again council makes a carte blanche decision of getting our district into huge debt without proper consultation and secondly, there is no option to say ‘NO’.

We only have a choice of options that council decided for us…”

“We are still paying for the costly mistake of the museum, how can council reassure us that the same debacle won’t happen again?”

Submissions opened on March 14 and close on April 14.

National Climate Change spokesperson to visit

National’s Climate Change spokesperson Todd Muller will be in Ashburton on Friday to explain discussions under way on the Government’s Zero Carbon Bill.

Muller’s visit will follow a public meeting in Timaru on Thursday night. MP for Rangitata Andrew Falloon is hosting the MP for Bay of Plenty as he wants to keep his constituents updated on how the Bill will impact the electorate.

Todd Muller Falloon said the National Party had been working for some months with the Government

on the proposed Zero Carbon Act. “We all recognise the need for an enduring solution to the challenge of climate change,” Falloon said.

Changes in government led to changes in proposals and plans, which made it difficult for communities and those impacted by an ever-changing regulatory landscape to plan for the future.

“We need a long-lasting response and strategy that remains in place whoever is in government, but one that doesn’t put

our local producers at an unfair disadvantage compared to our trading partners,” he said.

Negotiations between Climate Change Minister James Shaw and Muller were nearly complete.

The public meeting in Timaru is at the Bridge Club on Wilson Street at 7pm Thursday, with a smaller lunchtime meeting in Ashburton at midday on Friday at the Waireka Croquet Club in the Ashburton Domain.

The lunchtime meeting has a $10 cost to cover food.

Nelson arsonist named A man accused of lighting two fires in Nelson during the devastating bush blazes earlier this year can now be named.

Benjamin Philip Durrant faces two charges of arson. He was initially declined name suppression in the Nelson District Court but appealed the decision to the High Court.

Yesterday, the High Court publicly released its decision and allowed Durrant’s name to be published.

Details of the allegations against Durrant, however, remains suppressed. The judgment was embargoed until 2pm yesterday to give Durrant’s mother a chance to inform her father of the imminent publication of the charges against her son.

Young mosque victim The youngest victim of the Christchurch mosque terror attacks has been released from hospital while his hero father continues to recover. Indonesian artist Zulfirman Syah saved his 2-year-old son Averroes’ life by shielding his body during the Linwood Mosque shooting on March 15. Syah was shot in multiple places on his body.

He is in a stable condition and due to be released home. His wee boy Averroes suffered minor injuries, including a gunshot wound to the leg and backside.

Westland hit by record rainfall Record rainfall has hammered through the West Coast with an elderly woman’s body found after she was swept away by the flood waters and a bridge left in ruins.

Over the last few days, Cropp Waterfall has recorded 1086mm of rain – the highest level for that time period on record, Niwa Weather says.

The heavy rainfall eased yesterday in the area and was making its way through Wellington and Taranaki. People in the area were being advised to keep up to date with the forecasts.

Police said the body of Gloria Reardon-Hirst, 66, of Arahura Valley was found in the Arahura Valley, north of Hokitika yesterday morning.

“An initial scene investigation appears that the woman got out of the vehicle she was driving and tried to cross the flood waters on foot.”

A police spokeswoman said the woman had then been swept away in the strong-flowing current of surface flooding on Arahura Valley Road.

“The investigation is ongoing, and her death will be referred to the coroner. Our thoughts are with the family at this sad time,” the spokeswoman said.

The extreme weather front caused major flooding and demolished a bridge on the West Coast, closed major roads and schools and forced evacuations.

A state of emergency remains in place in Westland and was expected to be lifted yesterday or today.

Multiple roads remain closed on the West Coast due to the damage caused by the floods.

However, State Highway 73 from Otira to Kumara Junction has been reopened.

An update on State Highway 73 from Arthurs Pass to Jacksons was to be given at 4pm.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said she had been briefed on the flooding and officials were working as quickly as they could.

“And the NZTA, particularly to restore links where there has been that lost bridge.

“I’m advised seven to 10 days until that connection is restored,” Ardern said.

Aerial photos taken for the Department of Conservation reveal the staggering impact of the flood waters – washing away a bridge and gouging giant chunks out of roads.

MetService meteorologist Kyle Lee said most weather stations along the coast had recorded just under 200mm since the rain event started on late Sunday to early Monday.

Stations inland were hitting well above 200mm, and one station even recording around 1000mm.

Tourists were kept in the small West Coast town on Tuesday with treacherous road conditions also north to Hokitika.

Farther north, Arthurs Pass was blocked yesterday by two slips, with updates expected late yesterday, leaving the only way out of the West Coast region several hours’ drive north and through the Lewis Pass.

With many travellers planning to head south from Franz Josef to the Wanaka and Queenstown area, they would have to make new plans.

Flooding hasn’t only been restricted to rivers. Surface flooding has also resulted in road and school closures throughout the region.

The Insurance Council of New Zealand (ICNZ) has put out storm preparation and flood recovery tips for those affected the severe wet weather currently battering the West Coast.

ICNZ chief executive Tim Grafton said it was important communities looked out for each other in times like these.

“Check on your neighbours and friends and make your properties as storm-safe as possible without putting anyone’s personal safety at risk.”

Police standoff ends in death A man has died from stab wounds after a protracted standoff with armed police in a Christchurch suburban street.

Police are now investigating whether the dead man had any link to the March 15 mosque attacks.

The 54-year-old man had been sought in relation to a firearms incident, police said in a statement.

After a tipoff from a member of the public a search warrant was executed at a St Martins property late yesterday - police discovered a cache of firearms.

The man was located by police in a stopped vehicle in the Richmond Park area about 12.30am yesterday.

The Police Negotiation Team spoke with the man for several hours. The Eagle helicopter and armed offenders squad members were also at the scene.

“At around 3.40am police approached the vehicle and discovered the man critically injured with what appeared to be a stab wound. A knife was located in the vehicle.

Residents in the quiet suburban Christchurch street earlier told the Herald they awoke to the sounds of explosions in an incident that ended when armed police dragged a man out of a damaged vehicle.

Residents in Poulton Ave, Richmond, said armed police had been in the street for four hours.

A Mitsubishi SUV vehicle remained parked in the street yesterday morning - the driver’s window, rear driver’s window and rear window are all smashed.

Neighbours say a man was dragged out of the vehicle.

Poulton Ave resident Joanna Qereqeretabua woke at around 3.30am to shouts of, “Get out of the car!”.

There were then shouts of, “Police! Police!”

She looked out of her window and saw a silver Mitsubishi Pajero SUV with its side lights on.

There were soon armed police and dogs in the area.

“It was very scary after what’s happened here [in Christchurch],” she said.

Qereqeretabua says a robot device approached the vehicle about 4am and appeared to shatter the windows.

She heard three loud bangs but didn’t think they were gunshots.

There was also a male’s voice pleading for help, she said.

Mueller report to go public US Attorney-General William Barr plans to issue in a matter of weeks a public version of the special counsel’s report that found President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign team did not conspire with Russia.

Democrats attempted to change the subject to healthcare after the report from Robert Mueller appeared to shatter their case that Trump was an illegitimately-elected president.

Barr released his own summary of the report’s central findings on Sunday but said he needed more time to review the report to determine how much of it could be made public.

A Justice Department official said on Tuesday that Barr’s plan was to release a public version in “weeks, not months.” Congressional Democrats have demanded Barr turn over the report to them

by April 2, which would only leave a week for the Justice Department to complete its review.

The Justice official said there was no plan to share an advance copy of the report with the White House.

Some portions of Mueller’s confidential report contain materials that arose during secret grand jury proceedings.

leasing that information to the public.

The report also contains information about ongoing criminal investigations that Mueller referred to other US attorneys’ offices.

Barr has not yet revealed a precise date for when the final public version might be ready.

The Justice Department has not commented on the Democrats’ request that it be released to Congress by next week.

Trump and his top aides attacked unidentified political

opponents for starting the campaign investigation, calling the actions treasonous and worth probing.

“I think what happened was a disgrace,” Trump told reporters on a visit to the US Capitol, where he had lunch with Republican senators.

Republicans also were out for retribution, with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell saying he supported a push for an inquiry into potential missteps by law enforcement officials in their probe of Trump.

Senator Chuck Schumer, leader of the Democratic minority in the Senate, leaped on a court filing from the Justice Department that said the entire Obamacare healthcare law – the signature legislative accomplishment of Democratic President Barack Obama - should be struck down in the courts.

The law provides healthcare coverage for an estimated 20 million people, and Trump and his Republican allies, who see it as government overreach, have failed to replace it despite vows to do so.

“It is a stark reminder of the difference between our two parties: Democrats are fighting to expand and improve healthcare coverage and lower costs while Republicans are trying to take it all away and raise costs,” Schumer said on the Senate floor.

Republicans said during their lunch with Trump they discussed ways to improve the healthcare system.

“We’ve got to be the party of healthcare,” said Republican US Senator Lindsey Graham, a Trump ally.

Israel Hamas fighting renews after brief lull Palestinian militants have fired rockets from Gaza into Israel, drawing retaliatory air strikes and breaking a day-long lull in cross-border fighting between Israel and Hamas that could impact an Israeli election two weeks away.

The biggest Israeli-Palestinian escalation in months, which began on Monday with the longest-range Palestinian rocket attack to cause casualties in Israel in five years, had

eased after Egyptian mediation.

But even if the crisis subsides, it could shadow the impending Israeli election on April 9 in which right-wing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has campaigned on a tough security platform.

In the wake of Palestinian rocket attacks and Israeli air strikes, Israel said it reserved the right to strike again and kept its troops and tanks

massed at the Gaza frontier.

The border was mostly quiet on Tuesday and the military lifted its security restrictions in the area. But after darkness fell, at least two rockets launched from Gaza triggered sirens on the Israeli side of the border, the military said.

There were no reports of casualties or damage.

In response, the Israeli military said its aircraft struck several targets, including a

military compound and a weapons-manufacturing facility belonging to the Hamas militant group, which controls the Palestinian enclave of Gaza.

The exchange on Tuesday was less intense than Monday’s fighting. Israel responded to the initial rocket attack on Monday with a wave of strikes on Hamas targets and Palestinian militants fired dozens of rockets into Israel.

Art Alexakis has MS Everclear frontman Art Alexakis has revealed that he is living with multiple sclerosis in a statement to fans. The singer/guitarist said that he received his diagnosis three years ago after suffering a pinched nerve in a car accident and undergoing an MRI that revealed “lacerations and suspicious marks” on his spinal cord. “After receiving the results, [the doctor] told me that I have a form of Multiple Sclerosis (RRMS), and that I have had it for anywhere between 10 to 20 years,” Alexakis wrote. However, despite the fact that he now has to give himself injections three times a week, he said his prognosis is good.

County bans unvaxxed children in public A county in New York City’s northern suburbs has declared a state of emergency over a measles outbreak that has infected more than 150 people since September.

Under the declaration, which lasts for at least 30 days, anyone under 18 who is not vaccinated against measles is barred from public gathering places, including shopping centres, civic centres, schools, restaurants and houses of worship.

“It’s an attention grab, there’s no question about it,” Rock-

land County Executive Ed Day said at a news conference, noting that he did not believe such a drastic step has ever been tried in the US before.

Day said he was taking the action in hopes of reversing a recent rise in cases amid disturbing reports that health workers were encountering resistance when investigating cases.

Those in violation of the declaration could be charged with a misdemeanour punishable by up to six months in jail.

But Day acknowledged that

there will be no concerted enforcement effort and that the intent is not to arrest people but to emphasise the seriousness of the situation.

The county is experiencing New York state’s longest measles outbreak since the disease was declared officially eliminated from the United States in 2000.

The outbreak began in the Rockland area when seven unvaccinated travellers diagnosed with measles entered the county last October.

There have been 153 cases

to date, Day said. In the early days of the outbreak, people were cooperating with health officials and getting children vaccinated, he said, but that has changed.

“Our health inspectors have been hung up on and told not to call again. They’ve been told, ‘We’re not discussing this, do not come back’, when visiting the homes of infected individuals as part of their investigations,” Day said.

“This type of response is unacceptable and frankly irresponsible.”

If you don’t submit you can’t complain I

t’s not often any one or any organisation has the opportunity to create something that will last decades into the future, but when that opportunity comes along it needs to be grasped with both hands.

The project that’s currently uppermost in many minds in the Ashburton District at the moment is the new civic centre and library. Replacing the two elderly buildings that currently house those functions won’t be cheap.

Experts say it’ll cost anywhere from $39 million to $53 miillion, eye watering money in anyone’s books.

Currently the Ashburton District Council is asking ratepayers and residents what they think of the project, how much they think they should spend.

Submissions are slow to come in,

just 20 or so in more than a week and that’s a shame. This is an incredibly important project and there’s no point in complaining once the deal is sealed.

What it comes down to is not whether the complex is needed nor where it will be built - those decisions have been consulted on and made - it’s simply which of the four options is the best for today and many tomorrows.

There are probably just two options worth considering - the almost there $45 million deal or the Rolls Royce $53 million

option. Not surprisingly several of those who’ve taken the time to submit are keen to see the council aim high, to bite the bullet and build the best.

And they could well be right. At the end of the day the difference is just $8million. If the figures were in thousands then we would barely notice.

Unfortunately the project is clouded by a bit of inadequate planning early on. Estimates, and they were only estimates, were that it would cost less than half what the actual bill will be. A fair few people are grappling with that and you can’t blame them.

The council’s learned from projects past where it understated costs or cut corners. Each time they’ve been burned. This time round they’ve fronted up and spelled out what has hap-

pened. why and asked where to now.

You can understand why there are some who want to keep the cost of the new complex low.

It’s their rates money that’ll be funding the project. True - in part - but this project won’t be paid for just by today’s ratepayers. The debt that’ll be taken on by the council will be repaid over 40 years - that’s a couple or more generations for most families.

And that intergenerational debt also means newcomers to the district over the coming years will also be paying their share for the first class facilities they’ll have available.

And that debt t won’t be huge per rateable unit - average value house in town will be fronting just under $1 a week for the $45 million build and just over $1 for

the $53 million option.

Ratepayers are right to be cautious about such a massive spend up, but we do need to take a longer view of this project.

No point in going small today and regretting it tomorrow; far better to do the job once and do it properly from the start. And it’s cheaper to get it right first time up.

The key now is for people to put pen to paper, to get on their key boards to open their minds and let the council know what they’re thinking and why.

Don’t sit back and critcize; if you’re not prepared to share your views, then don’t moan once the deal is done. This is not about the process that’s been followed, it’s about where we go today so can be proud of what we’ve got tomorrow.

Being free from the fear of violence A

fter the unprecedented act of terror last Friday, now is not the time to talk about politics. Now is the time for unity; for New Zealand to heal together.

Friday, March 15, will now forever be a day etched in New Zealand’s collective memory.

On a quiet Friday afternoon a terrorist stormed into a place of peaceful worship and took away the lives of 50 people.

That quiet Friday afternoon has become one of our darkest days.

In the face of such terror, I’ve been struck by how New Zealanders and Mid Cantabrians have come together to support our Muslim community.

From the local vigils, to schools holding mufti days to raise money for the families affected, and the nationwide two minutes of silence last week; these are just a few of the ways that we are showing our support.

Putting our grief into words is so hard. Words are never enough, but I still took solace in the Prime Minister’s words to Parliament this week. I hope you

ne of the things I appreciate most about broadcasting is I have been lucky enough to work in basically all aspects of it: radio, TV, print, commercial, non-commercial, government-owned, and private enterprise.

And the lesson is – nothing beats private enterprise. Private enterprise largely allows you to operate on your merits.

In the Prime Minister’s words:

no experience in a classroom (other than spending most of his life at school before he joined the Labour Party) and telling you based on nothing more than a bit of ideology he dreamed up on a whiteboard that what you’re doing needs tipping on its head?

What Hipkins is after is centralised control of education. Boards at schools will be irrelevant, super committees will take over and tell you what to do.

And here’s the frustration with this: even if they get it up and running the next government will undo it. So if you’re a principal, or board member, or teacher, you’re chopping and changing at the whim of policy wonks in Wellington.

And here’s the further frustration: people like Hipkins aren’t interested in your view.

They say they are, but you look

at what he wants to do, and look at what comes to pass, and in between is the so-called “consultation period”. And you look at what he proposes and what gets enacted, and just see how much is amended due to those who argued against it, most of whom are perfectly successful but sadly don’t fit the communistic, centralised model favoured by Hipkins and his cronies.

And as a result the coalition that’s been set up with these 40plus schools and counting, how much time and energy will they put into what must ultimately, sadly, be a futile exercise?

The common sense, or lack of it, is the infuriating part.

Are there schools or techs that are struggling? Sure, there are.

So focus on those, help them, load expertise into them. But why you would want to go into a high

A contract milker who cannot own cows and make decisions to kill them because of his religious beliefs is the Share Farmer of the Year for Canterbury/North Otago.

Ruwan Wijayasena is in his 14th year dairy farming and was the stand out performer for judges at the regional final of the Dairy Industry Awards. He was presented the major award at a Christchurch function on Monday night.

The 43-year-old contract milker of 1840 cows for Theland Farm Group on a 537 hectare Darfield farm won $10,750 in prizes plus two merit awards.

Wijayasena said he had always loved being a farmer and was lucky to join Synlait Farms, now Theland Farm Group, which shared his desire to carry out best farm practices towards the sustainability of dairy farming.

“My wife and I are Buddhist and have a religious barrier of not being able to own cows and make decisions to kill them. We have found a way to grow our business without following the traditional footsteps.”

The other major winners were Matt Redmond, who was named the region’s Dairy Manager of the Year and Nicola Blowey, the Dairy Trainee of the Year.

Runners-up in the Canterbury/ North Otago competition were Shaun and Andrea Wise, who won $3750 in prizes.

Third place went to Elizabeth and Lyndon Grant, who entered the awards to challenge themselves and analyse their business in depth.

“We also want to give back to the dairy industry and the people who have helped us on our journey into sharemilking. We think recognition for us is also reflection on all their hard work and input.”

The couple milk 700 cows as 50/50 sharemilkers for Ross and Susan Duncan’s 195ha farm at Ashburton.

Year Redmond won $6125 in prizes plus three merit awards and is the farm manager on Craigmore’s Pahau Flats Dairy – Landsend, a 232ha, 830-cow property at Culverden.

Christchurch farm manager Mohit Pandya was second and Waimate farm manager Robert Reyes placed third.

Women were represented strongly in the Dairy Trainee of the Year category, achieving a clean sweep of first, second and third places with 25-year-old Blowey named the winner.

Blowey is an assistant herd manager on Kieran and Leonie Guiney’s 600-cow, 175ha Fairlie property and won $5800 in prizes and three merit awards.

Synlait steps away from coal

Synlait has stood by its pledge to step back from coal and put in a new boiler powered by electrodes submerged in water at its Dunsandel site.

The electrode boiler is the first of its kind to be installed in New Zealand and has been operating for the past two months.

Chief executive Leon Clement said the milk company had made a commitment last June not to install another coal-fired boiler at any of its sites, also announcing a goal to reduce off-farm greenhouse gas emissions by 50 per cent by 2028.

“This is an exciting moment for Synlait,’’he said.

“It’s a significant milestone in terms of reducing our energy footprint as part of our sustainability commitments.’’

The electrode boiler is seven metres tall with a diameter of

2.7m and provides renewable process heat to Synlait’s dairy liquids facility.

Electricity flows through the electrodes submerged in water to make contact with the water, vaporising it into steam to create renewable process heat.

Steam from the electrode boiler will be used to pasteurise and sterilise milk, clean production lines, and help form product packaging, among other uses.

Initially the boiler’s capacity will be 6 megawatts and there is potential for this to increase to 12 megawatts.

The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority supported the project financially through its technology demonstration programme.

Traditional dairy processors have relied on coal as a cost-effective method to create large volumes of process heat to dry liquid milk into powder.

“We reviewed several options to fuel process heat, including diesel, gas, biomass,” said sustainability and brand director Hamish Reid.

“The electrode boiler stood out as the best option, even though the operating costs are around double over a 10-year period.”

The electrode boiler is 99 per cent efficient, which is up to 30 per cent more efficient than coal burners.

Reid said the carbon equivalent saving of the electrode boiler was 13,714 tonnes a year compared with a coal alternative.

“We estimate that over a 10year period, the electrode boiler’s emissions savings (at its current capacity of 6MW) are roughly the same as emissions from 9600 households.

“On an annual basis, that’s approximately the same as removing 5300 cars from the road,’’ he said.

1080 drop wiped out 90% of deer on Molesworth block

By Jamie Morton Officials have confirmed that about 90 per cent of deer on a block on New Zealand’s largest farm were killed during a 1080 poison drop targeting possums.

The drop was carried out by TBFree NZ in October, 2017, over a 62,000ha block on Department of Conservation-owned Molesworth Station, as part of a nine-year programme to eradicate bovine tuberculosis (TB).

Eight helicopters using GPS dropped toxic bait at 2kg/ha over the station, but the operation was halted when scores of red deer were found to have been killed.

Ospri, the Government-backed company that DOC permits to run pest control operations on public conservation land, later commissioned an aerial survey in February last year to compare deer abundance on a similar-sized block nearby that wasn’t poisoned.

That revealed deer abundance was 88 per cent lower in the poisoned area.

Another survey, carried out by Manaaki Whenua-Landcare Research last month, found there had only been a slight increase in deer numbers, and that it could take six to eight years before the population fully recovered.

The mass by-kill horrified opponents to 1080 and deer hunters alike.

Experienced helicopter pilot Bill Hales, who has 40 years’ experience as a wild animal recovery operator, earlier told the Herald the drop was a “crying shame of a wasted resource”.

“Why not let us guys in there for three months before you have a poison drop and harvest the product? Why waste the resource?”

Yesterday, Ospri chief operating officer Matthew Hall maintained the use of 1080 for large-scale pest control operations was still the most effective tool to achieve the company’s TB eradication goals.

“Our work also has biodiversity benefits by reducing possum, rat and stoat numbers.

“Recognising that there can sometimes be a significant deer

by-kill from pest control operations, Ospri is working with industry partners to develop improved deer repellent baits.”

The company was trialling two new repellents in the hope that they’ll be more effective and available for operations to treat the remaining TB risk areas of the 180,000ha station.

“It is important to note that the by-kill was higher in the open terrain of Molesworth than in a heavily forested region like the West Coast.”

Ospri, which manages the TBfree eradication programme, conducted the possum control operation to interrupt the TB infection cycle on the station.

Despite the successful interventions in the wider region, TB-infected wildlife remains present on Molesworth and adjoining properties, and represented an infection risk for the cattle farmed there.

The station had the longest continuous TB-infected cattle herd in the country.

The project to clear infection on

the station was seen as pivotal to eradicating bovine TB and reducing the impact of the disease on New Zealand’s meat and dairy exports.

TB eradication in Molesworth was expected in 2026.

The newly-released figures come after the SPCA initially called for a ban on 1080, saying it was “deeply concerned” over its use, before changing its position and acknowledging there was a “a need for population control of some species”.

Monitoring data by the Department of Conservation has shown that aerial 1080 operations were effective at protecting under-threat native species and restoring forests.

Scientific data collected over more than 60 years had confirmed that, when used in accordance with New Zealand regulations, 1080 presented little risk to humans or the environment, and left no permanent or accumulative residue in water, soil, plants or animals.

However, DOC acknowledged

Mercury building wind farm Mercury says it will build a 33-turbine wind farm at Turitea near Palmerston North at a cost of $256 million.

It is the first big power station announcement for five years and will add to Mercury’s Waikato hydro and geothermal power plants and a trial solar scheme in Auckland.

Mercury’s chief executive, Fraser Whineray, says that current market conditions indicate that new renewable energy capacity is required for New Zealand.

The company has been working towards wind farm development for 15 years.

The 119MW Turitea wind farm will generate 470GWh per annum on average, enough electricity to power 210,000 cars.

When generation connects to the national grid at Linton from late 2020, Turitea will be New Zealand’s third largest wind farm.

It will be the first large-scale generation addition to New Zea-

land’s capacity since 2014.

The $256m project was part of a potential investment of up to $750m in wind energy.

The Turitea project will be funded from existing debt facilities.

Mercury has contracted Vestas-New Zealand Wind Technology, a local subsidiary of Vestas Wind Systems A/S (the world’s largest wind turbine supplier), to build and maintain the Turitea wind farm for 25 years.

Mercury has consent to build 60 turbines and transmission and other infrastructure from this project is scaled to support the development of the remaining 27 turbines at Turitea and on the Puketoi range to the east.

Mercury has consents for a 53-turbine wind farm there.

The company says Turitea and Puketoi are regarded as preeminent among existing opportunities for wind farm development in New Zealand due to a combination of high average wind speeds and proximity to the na-

Mercury also owns 19.99 per cent of Tilt Renewables, which operates and develops wind farms in New Zealand and Australia.

The minister in charge of New Zealand’s spy agencies, Andrew Little, says he has signed off more surveillance warrants since the Christchurch terror attack on March 15.

But, speaking to the Herald, Little would not say exactly how many people were now being spied on as a result of the attack.

“There is usually between 30 and 40 people at any one time at various states of being either under surveillance or considered for it.

“That number will be bigger now and it will be at various ends of the people-of-interest scale.”

Little said he had “authorised new activity”, such as surveillance and intrusive activity, since the attack.

But he wouldn’t detail numbers or the nature of that activity.

He said a warrant could be anything from physical surveillance to telecommunications activity.

“The whole gambit of what would otherwise be described as intrusive activity.

“The purpose of a warrant is to authorise and effectively make lawful what would otherwise be

Little is the minister responsible for the Security and Intelligence Service (SIS) and the Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB).

He has the final say over which people the agencies spy on and signs off all warrants.

Speaking to the Security and Intelligence Select Committee last month, NZSIS Director Rebecca

Kitteridge said in terms of terrorism and violent extremism, at any one time around 30 people were of particular interest to the SIS, although the number was not static.

As a result of the investigations into the Christchurch attacks, Little said: “new activity is leading to other individuals being identified”.

“All individuals identified need to be the subject of some level of investigation; some of those may find that they are under a more intense level of investigation, including surveillance.”

He was not able, however, to go into much detail without compromising the ability for those investigations to be conducted.

Little wouldn’t say if the people, who had come under surveillance since the attacks, were white extremists.

“The agencies have responsibilities for investigating terrorism and violent extremism of all sorts.

“That is the category of work that is leading to more people being either considered persons of interest and being put under varying levels of investigation and surveillance.”

Apple-picking robot could be game changer An apple orchard out the back of Puketapu has a new worker, one which could help the industry’s chronic seasonal labour shortage in the long term.

The world’s first robotic apple harvester has been set up at a T&G Global orchard in Hawke’s Bay and it could be a game changer for ap-

ple growers, helping ease labour constraints the industry currently experiences.

The robot was designed by American based company Abundant Robotics.

Abundant Robotics CEO Dan Steere , said it used computer vision to recognise the apples, then

analyses them to decide whether they are ripe, before a vacuum is used to pick them.

When Hawke’s Bay Today visited the robot, three people were operating it, but Steere said it was just for the first harvest, saying they were “overwhelming it with attention,” to start with.

Ashburton Bowling Club Brentton Donaldson has completed an enviable double this weekend on the greens. Playing in the sub-centre Junior Open singles last weekend Brentton was successful in winning the Title on Saturday 23 at the Ashburton Bowling Club.

Not content with this great effort Brentton was on the greens again on Sunday participating in the Junior Men’s Champion of Champion Singles against other club junior champions.

After three rounds of competition Brentton took out the Junior Men’s title. On Saturday in the Junior Singles after qualifying Larraine Mills lost in the first round, Jim Mills lost in the Semi-finals Aaron lost in the Final.

On Sunday Laraine Mills put on a good display in winning the Ch of Ch Junior singles. Other Ch of Ch results were Heather missing out in the 1st round and Gavin going out in the second round after a close game. Well done to all those players.

Ashburton Citizens’ Association Members met last week with three councillors attending. Some of the smaller issues raised at the previous meeting were still on the agenda, including:

Lions Club of Ashburton Our club hosted an international night for newcomers to Mid Canterbury at our March meeting. Newcomers co-ordinator Adi Avnit along with the staff at Hotel Ashburton worked hard to make this evening a success.

Our club hosted newcomers from all around the world who imparted much information about the countries they came from and their feelings of welcoming and warmth on arriving in New Zealand.

A small number of Lions enjoyed their trip to the Court Theatre organised by Sue Letham. This was a great evening and the play itself was most entertaining.

Inviting the Chief Executive of the Council to attend a meeting. Once it is established when he will be able to attend, a list of questions will be formulated to ensure that the best use is made of his time. The public will also be invited.

Contact is still to be made with other citizens’ groups in the district which have wound up.

A thank you was extended to the council and all those involved with the vigil in the domain following the terrorist attack in Christchurch (still seems surreal to be writing those words).

Despite the short preparation time, the speakers were inspirational and the event very well run. The large number of people who attended is a testament to the strong support for the members of the Muslim community both here and in Christchurch.

Previously we have discussed issues relating to the dog park which is adjacent to the Riding for the Disabled grounds: at this meeting the owner of the dog park was in attendance and was able to put this matter in a different light. It was an abject lesson for the association that in future we need to hear both sides of an issue and I think we have all taken this to heart.

Lions Brent Read and Barney Parsons are presently organising a West Coast Wilderness Trail Bike ride for April. So it is a busy time for members and their partners.

At the end of March, 6 members and partners will be attending the Lions District 202J Convention to be hosted by the Rakaia Lions Club. Further

upcoming events include the annual swap meet catering and the biennial Big Smoke v Rural Folk team challenge and auction. Details of these in next report.

In conclusion it is with sadness that we need to acknowledge the Terrorist Event that occurred in Christchurch on Friday March 15, 2019. The Ashburton Lions Club will financially support these victims through the International District 202E Charitable Trust by a donation of $1,000.

Club President Lance and our fellow club members wish to offer any overall support we can to our community as a whole.

Ashburton Garden Club

Ashburton Creative Fibre The meeting of Ashburton Creative Fibre was held at the Plains Museum on Monday March 18. 27 members were present. It was noted that one member had lost a son while another had lost a daughter. Another member was back after a year of treatments.

Recently some members went to Rosebank to knit and encourage residents to do the same.

Our group was invited to take part in a beginners class for weaving on March 27, at the Ashburton Gallery 5pm-7pm.

We are working towards our Open Day in August, the theme being Enchanted Gardens with many exciting exhibits produced so far.

Fleeces are available for purchase on Friday April 12.

A reporter came to see our display on the Show and Tell table and it whetted her appetite to do more in that line herself.

Show And Tell table - one member had created many funky figures for Open Day. There were baby and children’s jackets, bootees and rugs.

For adults - several lap rugs, including a tartan one, hairpin scarf and stole. One member had won 15 out of 17 entries at the Methven A&P Show and they were proudly shown.

The meeting concluded at 11.30am and that was a time to look at the display table, chat and have lunch.

The Ashburton Garden Club met at the Senior Centre on March 21 with 26 members including 3 new ladies being welcomed to our Club.

A brief meeting was held before we welcomed our Guest Speaker Brian Glassey, who presented a very informative and light hearted talk on Dahlias. He brought along a large tray of a variety of Dahlia blooms, giving a descriptive detail of each variety that is available.

Ranging from large fimbriated, to decorative cacti, water lily, pompom, collarette, singles, bicolours, balls, not to mention the micro dahlias. We learned of the care required to produce these wonderful colourful plants which flower from January to April providing we don’t have early frosts.

He provided us with useful tips too even on how to stage Dahlias in Shows.

Audrey Leath thanked him for his presentation and invited him to join us for afternoon tea.

Ashburton Golf Club Back on deck now, after missing a week, recovering from the Fairlie 500. Good fun as always down there, great people, superb tournament, well fed and watered, and the less said about the golf the better. For every winner there has to be a few losers, and if you are good at something, keep doing it, so I do!

The Friday and Tuesday night Midland Seeds teams’ tournament has now wrapped up for the season. Another successful year, well done to everyone involved in running this. Great work.

Saturday just gone Matt held one of his wonderful Pro Shop days, and Tom Blacklow continued his great form since the Classic in picking up the top prize with a net 64. Followed by a gaggle of other golfers close behind.

Pennants kicked off last Sunday for the weekend men’s teams. A new year full of hope, wide eyed in anticipation 5 teams ventured out to up hold the great name of Ashburton GC. As of writing I have not heard how the top Holmes team got on, but with Hamish at the helm I think we can safely chalk up a win there. News just in a 6 apiece half, with a great win for new grandad Robbie.

Hoppy’s Redpath team fell over by half a point. Shane’s team have changed leagues this year from Alex to Moyes.

They dragged in a couple of gun players, in Josh Cochrane and Perry Hunt. News is Perry had to actually give shots, un heard of! But they carried on last year’s great play with a stunning 13 to 4 loss.

You could bet the farm on Shane’s team.

A new breath of life was blown into the Patterson league, with 2 teams being entered this year, and Tom again carried a great team of young guns to a wonderful victory over Methven, putting the fear of god into the North section. In the South section the old guard were scraping the bottom of the barrel with experienced mainstays, captain and vice, Gaby and Paddy unavailable.

A white flag was put in the golf bag to be flown, just in case, but in the biggest upset since David last picked up his sling shot. The boys mauled a strong Tinwald team 16 to 1. Now obviously there are mutterings about previous Captains decisions, will the boys get back in for the next game? Now as a totally impartial observer, I don’t think you can put all the blame onto Gaby, as easy as that would be. Think it’s going to be another fun filled pennants season.

This Saturday we have a Par round with usual start times and good luck to everyone going over the bridge to play in the Tinwald 3500, take your extra-large swag bags with you. Till next time good golfing.

Ashburton Horticultural Society President Trevor Gamblin welcomed 12 members and one new member joined us.

Our guest speaker was Bruce from Mia Flora at Winchester. Bruce is from Australia and while training in Horticulture he worked at Perth City Council, this experience gave Bruce a great grounding in all aspects of Horticulture. Bruce & his partner John returned from Australia 5 years ago and purchased Kavanagh House at Winchester and turned it into Mia Flora Garden Centre & Cafe. Bruce’s principles in good landscaping are colour, what you can’t see excites you, plant on different levels, accentuate the things you like to look at from the kitchen & lounge, hide what you don’t like, look to the future when planning your garden.

Ashburton Pakeke Lions Club An Irish Theme celebrating St Patrick’s day dominated the March meeting for Pakeke Lions. A number of visitors and the guest speaker Glenn Vallender were introduced. A minute of silence was observed remembering the Christchurch tragedy. Mention was also made of the passing of loyal Pakeke Supporter Amy Jones. Lion Peter O’Neil was presented with a special pin for introducing new members.

The survival of the Pakeke Club depends on the introduction of new members on a regular basis. Interested men and women in the ‘retired’ category are very welcome, talk to a Pakeke Member and find out how this fun and happy club functions.

Final event of summer a winner

After a summer of less than ideal weather, a clear and calm day emerged after a misty start on Saturday to ensure Water Ski Lake Hood’s final event of the summer was a winner.

Calm water meant the skiers who took part in the club’s threeevent tournament at Lake Hood at the weekend didn’t want to leave the water, so competition continued until near dark, club spokesperson Janeen Donaldson said.

Skiers from as far away as Wanaka and Rangiora made their way to Lake Hood for the event to fight it out for honours across the three disciplines – slalom, tricks and jump – and Donaldson said they produced some top results.

Those taking part ranged from first timers, through to experienced campaigners, and among those at the younger end of the spectrum were ski-schoolers Jett and Quinn Jansen. They lined up on the dock for their first ever tournament, with Jett running the full course and skiing round 10 bouys off the dock to win the novice trophy.

All junior skiers were stoked to make personal bests (PBs) in either slalom, tricks or jump. Slalom honours and the juniors trophy went to Sam Bainbridge, with a best score of 5-14@55k. Angus Ferguson was second, and Carter Stewart third.

Donaldson said the club’s Aquafest trophies were awarded for cumulative scores over two rounds, so skiers couldn’t afford to miss a round, or fall early.

There were plenty of senior skiers scoring on the very short 12m line including Meg Harraway and Lana Donaldson, both on 12 in each round, with just half a bouy separating them. Harraway took the women’s trophy honours, and Emily Milner was third.

The Aquafest men’s trophy went to Steve Wayne on 12m twice as well, while second went to Leighton Hood, and third was

Jack Engel. In tricks Diaz McKay was thrilled with his effort of 730 points which qualified him for nationals at Easter, and Donaldson said there were plenty of other PB scores by juniors, including Hunter Stewart with 2130 points.

Top scores of the day went to Hugh Donaldson with 4200 points, just ahead of twin brother George Donaldson with 4130.

It was a similar story in the

jumps competition, Hugh Donaldson flew 48.5m, with George Donaldson just behind with 47m.

George Donaldson took the bragging rights in slalom though, with half on the 12m line.

Harraway produced the top women’s jump of 33.6m and Gavin Green returned from injury last year to jump 21.9m in SM3.

For the youngsters, Ferguson was thrilled to score a new jump

pb of 22.9m in junior boys’ section.

Entries for nationals closed this week and most of the skiers who were in action at Lake Hood will be heading for regionals in two weeks, before making their way to Auckland’s Orakei Basin for nationals at Easter.

Some of the top skiers were also off to Australia this week for the Oz-Kiwi Challenge in Myuna Bay.

The Assignment for the meeting was “There was something about him/her”.

Members wrote of drugs, fresh start, filled with fire, hunched shoulders, mistreatment and blonde hair.

The instant exercise was to begin with the word –“warehouse”.

Members wrote of taxi, tattered roof, three layered coat, fantastic or not, job interview, and big fire.

The meeting concluded at 2.45pm with the serving of afternoon tea and a discussion about a possible writing competition for adults in the future.

The April assignment is “If we get arrested it’s your fault”.

Errol then gave us a most interesting talk about a recent visit that he and his wife had been gifted to stay at Otahuna Lodge. Otahuna was built in 1895 for Sir Heaton Rhodes, a high profile pioneer of Canterbury, and his wife Jessie. Sir Heaton is remembered as a Victorian country gentleman and benefactor known for his enthusiasm for life and kindness to others. Errol gave us a beautiful glimpse into a past way of life and also to a night of luxury that not many of us would have been able to experience ourselves. We were enthralled by the descriptions of the house and gardens and the enduring legacy that Sir Heaton had for the finer things in life.

Errol was thanked for his talk and Members were reminded that next month’s meeting is a week late (April 29) because of Easter.

Our Early Birds on Saturday morning experienced a nice cool morning, perfect conditions for the 11 runners and one walker. A very social morning was had which finished with coffee at Columbus afterwards.

The sun arrived on time for the Saturday afternoon meet which was held at Argyle Park for the annual 3km Turkey Trott. 10 runners and 12 walkers estimated their time for completing the course and all watches and other devices were obediently handed in so no one had any idea what speed they were doing. The winner was the person/s who finished closest to their estimated time, therefore everyone had an equal chance at winning.

A lot of fun was had and everyone was kept in suspense until the winners were announced at afternoon tea which was hosted nearby at the Croziers. It was great to have our Club Patrons Gordon Clinton and Johnny McGrath time keep and marshal, along with Toresa Hooper and Kim Ford helping at the finish line also.

This year we had first equal winners in the walking section with Barbara Taylor (24:14) and Paul Severins (21:32) taking the honours estimating within one second of their actual time and Angel Spooner (12:42) was the winner of the runners being within 2 seconds of her estimated time.

The traditional Croziers Turkey were greatly received by the winners with everyone else leaving with a spot prize as well.

CLUB NEWS Glenn Vallender, a former Ashburton College teacher well known in the community for his many interests and volunteering activities, but also an academic with a passion for research and undertaking a Doctorate in the history of Geo Sciences in New Zealand. His particular subject for us were stories of early Seismologists and the use of seismographs dating back to 1882. The name of George Hogman was familiar but few know exactly why. There are a number of seismographs located in Canterbury recording the seismic activity around us.

Ramping up for football Football teams from around Mid Canterbury are putting the finishing touches on their pre-season preparations ahead of the football season starting on April 6.

The Mid Canterbury United Football Club’s B side played out a friendly game against the Mid Canterbury United Football Club’s Masters side on Tuesday.

The B side kick off their season with an away trip to Avonhead Park to take on one of the three FC Twenty 11 sides in division six.

The Methven FC reserves also compete in division six, and will start their season with an away trip to take on Banks Peninsula.

The Methven FC first team will start their season off at home under the mountain against Universities in division three.

The Mid Canterbury United Football Club’s first team also have a home game, hosting Halswell United at the Ashburton Domain, having moved up to division one after an unbeaten season in division two last year.

All Blacks broke alcohol advertising code Instagram photos showing All Blacks Beauden Barrett and Damian McKenzie pouring champagne have been found to be a breach of alcohol advertising rules.

The photos, posted on the All Blacks’ Instagram accounts during the ASB Tennis Classic in January, have been removed after the Advertising Standards Authority Complaints Board ruled that they were “alcohol advertisements”.

They showed Barrett, McKenzie and Spanish tennis player Pablo Carreno pouring Moet & Chandon champagne as part of the champagne company’s sponsorship of the tournament.

Authority chief executive Hilary Souter said posts on the Instagram accounts of alcohol companies had previously been found to breach the advertising code, but these were the first breaches found on the Instagram accounts of “social media influencers” such as All Blacks.

“It’s a good reminder to people that things that they used to think were public relations opportunities have become advertising when you place them on a platform like Instagram,” she said.

Barrett has 417,000 Instagram followers and McKenzie has 186,000.

Damian McKenzie, who turns 24 next month, is under age 25.

Complaints Board chairwoman Raewyn Anderson upheld the first complaint.

“All Blacks have been designated heroes of the young in previous Complaints Board decisions,” she said.

But she did not rule on the

complaint about McKenzie’s age, noting that Tennis Auckland had removed the photos from the Instagram accounts of the two All Blacks and the ASB Classic after she forwarded Jackson’s complaint to them on February 11.

Tennis Auckland and Moet & Hennessy also told her that they would discuss the breach in their formal debrief of the tournament and had circulated copies of the code to all relevant staff.

She ruled that the matter had been settled.

“Taking into account the self-regulatory action to promptly remove the advertisement and

the undertaking, through education, to minimise the risk of a reoccurrence and another code breach, it would serve no further purpose to place the matter before the Complaints Board,” she said.

Moet & Hennessy NZ senior brands manager Juliet McInnes said the company “took immediate and incisive action and had the images taken down”.

“We apologise to all concerned and we will be more alert in future,” she said.

However Jackson said the case showed that New Zealand’s system of industry self-regulation of alcohol advertising did not work because the photos were on Instagram from January 7 until February 12 when they were finally removed.

“It’s too late. The damage has already been done, the harm has been done, and that’s not good enough,” she said.

“I detected this ad a week or two after it was put up. It was 37 days out on the internet to be exposed to young people.”

She said the guidelines were “purely voluntary” and there were no financial penalties for breaches.

She urged the Government to put the code into law, as it did for tobacco in 1995 and has been recommended for alcohol by the Law Commission in 2010 and by a ministerial forum on alcohol advertising and sponsorship in 2014.

NZ Rugby has so far resisted attempts to end alcohol sponsorship of the sport.

Read returns to rugby for Crusaders Daniel Gilhooly All Blacks captain Kieran Read will make his first appearance of the year when the Crusaders face the Hurricanes in a high-stakes Super Rugby game in Wellington on Friday.

Coach Scott Robertson has resisted the urge to introduce the 33-year-old from the bench, instead chucking him into the deep end at No.8 as the Crusaders seek to put last week’s shocker against the Waratahs behind them.

Read has been on extended off-season leave to have him primed for this year’s World Cup, where he will farewell New Zealand rugby.

He says the fourth-month off-season has left him feeling sharp.

“I feel like I’m in as good nick as I’ve been in my career,” Read told journalists yesterday.

“It was the aim this year, it’s what the off-season was about.

I’m very thankful to have had the time. Right now, it’s time to get out there and do it on the field.”

Woods welcomes marathon Evin Priest Tiger Woods says he is not concerned about the potential for seven matches in five days at the World Golf Championships-Match Play, despite having four back surgeries since he last played the event in 2013.

Woods will make his long-awaited return to the WGC-Match Play, held at Austin Country Club in Texas this week, but has never played the round-robin format adopted in 2015.

The 43-year-old won the WGC-Match Play three times during its one-and-done era but now the event sees each of the 64 competitors play three group matches before the knockout phase begins.

The round of 16 and quarter finals are crammed into Saturday, with the semi-fi-

nals and final on Sunday.

Having pulled out from the recent Arnold Palmer Invitational with a neck strain, some were concerned for Woods playing too much golf on a hilly course two weeks out from the Masters.

Campbell due set for black-type assignments Hastings trainer Patrick Campbell will contest two black-type races at Awapuni on Saturday and he is hoping both Hunta Pence and Scandalo can put in a good showing.

Hunta Pence will head into the Gr.2 City of Palmerston North Awapuni Gold Cup (2000m) in good form having won his last two starts in the Wairoa Cup Trial (1900m) and Metroclad Handicap (1600m) at Trentham.

“I was quite convinced going into Wairoa, the horse desperately needed a win after having gone very good races without winning,” Campbell said.

“I think it was a confidence booster for him at Wairoa. That followed through to Wellington, albeit a four horse field. The horse seemed to be a little more confident.

“He was allowed a fairly soft lead, which helped when the pressure came on at the 200m, but he was coming back from 1900m to a mile.

“It might have only been four

runners, but they were pretty capable gallopers, so it was certainly a step in the right direction.”

Hunta Pence has drawn the outside gate in the 11 horse field, but Campbell isn’t overly perturbed with the barrier.

“It probably doesn’t help, but it doesn’t make too much difference I think,” Campbell said.

“Sometimes you draw in at the 2000m at Palmerston North and miss it slightly you end up in a bit of a problem. So the fact that he has drawn out, he might have to cover a little bit of ground early, but it’s probably not the worst result.

“I know there are three or four on-pace runners inside him, so I am sure it will be run pretty truly.

They just might spread out a little bit going out of the straight.”

Campbell is pleased with Hunta Pence heading into the race and said his charge is on a path towards the Listed Hawke’s Bay Cup (2200m) on his home track next month.

“I am very happy with him. On

“He jarred up very badly in his last two starts around Christmas time and the most recent one be-

ing the Anniversary (Gr.3, 1600m) at Wellington.

“The firmer tracks tickled him up a little bit, but he has overcome that and is bright as a button, hopefully the ground won’t be too firm for him on Saturday.”

Scandalo has drawn the ace barrier and while Campbell doesn’t expect his charge to win, he would be happy with a top four finish.

“Scandalo has not had a trial or jumpout (leading into the race), but in saying that he has got through a fair bit of work and he has invariably gone well fresh.

I’d like to think that he would be running in the money, third or fourth.”

Campbell has mixed feelings about the wet weather forecast for Palmerston North on Saturday.

“Hunter Pence doesn’t mind a softer track,” he said.

“With Scandalo, it’s a little bit different. He would handle a soft track no problem, but if the track is inclined to break up or a little bit shifting, he seems to be a little apprehensive on that.”

Bowlers sort out the best Mid Canterbury’s best club bowlers converged on the Ashburton Bowling Club on Sunday to find out just who was the best of the best.

The Mid Canterbury Bowling Sub Centre’s Champion of Champion singles competition pitted each club’s singles champion against the champions from each of the district’s other clubs, across the grades.

The Allenton Bowling Club dominated the senior sections, with Rodney Greaney winning the senior men’s title and Jeff Nowell from the Methven Bowling Club the runner-up, while another Allenton bowler – Sandra Holdom – won the senior women’s title, with Barbara Skilling from the Hampstead Bowling Club was the runner-up.

Brentton Donaldson from the Ashburton

Bowling club followed up his win in the Mid Canterbury Junior Open Singles tournament the day prior, with a win in the junior men’s champion of champions section.

Bruce Redmond from the Methven Bowling Club was the runner-up.

For the junior women, Laraine Mills made it a double for the Ashburton Bowling Club, winning that title with Alana Turnbull from
