Schools affected by dairy downturn BY RUBY HARFIELD

The dairy downturn is not only affecting farmers but also their children. Many students in rural places like Mid Canterbury board at schools outside their district and while many schools have not yet felt the effects, some are concerned about the future for their students. Christ’s College’s new executive principal Garth Wynne, who had a meeting in Ashburton last week with prospective, current and past students’ families, said the downturn was concerning for all schools. About 20 per cent of the school’s 160 boarders are from Mid Canterbury,

which equates to 5 per cent of the whole school population. “It would be naïve to say I’m not worried about that.” However, most dairy farmers are smart people who care about their children’s education and probably would have saved for it well before now, he said. “I would assume they would have put money aside for their child’s education. “The right education for your child is the best investment a family can ever make.” Schools, like any industry, will be affected by the downturn and need to be prepared, but after living in Western Australia for a number of years with the oil crises, Mr Wynne noticed the general

trend was that education is the last thing that people cut back on when they need to save costs. While there are some concerns, private schools like Christ’s College offer scholarships and although they do not cover all costs, if a family feels that the school is right for their child they will usually choose to enrol their child there regardless of the cost, he said. Fees at Christ’s College are $22,000 a year and for boarders, like most Mid Canterbury students, an extra $15,300 will be added.
