Facing difficult decisions St Andrew’s Church is facing some tough questions over the future of its historic church building, and facilitating discussions is interim moderator and former police officer Eric Mattock. Susan Sandys reports.

The centre is always looking for new volunteers to help out, and Ward said anyone who wants to help can get in touch with her.

It is open from 3pm to 5.30pm on weekdays, and operates successfully alongside Hype Youth Health Centre and He Waka Tapu at 193 Burnett Street.

Ward said the students are a wonderful bunch, and it is a pleasure to be able to work with them.

“I was able to wrestle creatively with many questions that had been bugging me.”

And being a minister has turned out to be just the right role, and he has particularly enjoyed serving struggling parishes with limited resources over the years.

“Ministry isn’t a job that you do, it’s a life that you lead,” he said.

Mattock grew up on a farm at Taranaki and left school at the age of 14, working on the land in a variety of jobs. He worked for

the Forestry Service culling goats and deer as a teenager before joining the army at the age of 18.

St Andrew’s is more than 100 years old and had its last service to date in 2016, prior to closing for repairs due to an earthquakedamaged organ loft.

However, the parish is now grappling with the same dilemma faced by owners of so many of Canterbury’s older buildings.

There is not only the repairs to be undertaken, but also earthquake strengthening.

Parishioners now have to decide whether they can afford to both retain and maintain the building.

“It’s going to take some time because churches are not buildings, people have historical and emotional connections to them, people were baptised there, married there,” Mattock said.

Church elder Michael Shearer said the church was an important landmark in the town, reflected by its Category B historical listing. It had served many generations of followers, and he himself was the third generation of his family to worship there.

Cost assessments of strengthening were currently being carried out, and it was possible in the future any such project may involve the wider community.

A newborn baby is among the dead in a horrific car crash in South Taranaki yesterday.

Six people were killed and two have critical injuries after the smash near Waverley shortly after 11am.

Five of the victims are adults and one is a newborn baby.

All four elderly people travelling northbound were pronounced dead at the scene.

The male driver of the second vehicle – heading southbound – and a newborn baby in that car also died at the scene, police said.

The front-seat passenger of the southbound vehicle, a woman, was airlifted to Wellington Hospital with critical injuries.

An 8-year-old girl, who was in the back seat, was taken to Waikato Hospital for treatment.

Eric Mattock could be considered just the right person to facilitate discussions at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church as the parish faces some difficult decisions.

The 72-year-old has lived a diverse life throughout the many career choices he has made, ranging from truck driver and deer culler to police officer and minister.

“I have learned never to be surprised by people, to realise that unfortunate things happen for no apparent reason; people are complex, diverse, but also people are precious,” he said.

Being able to work with people and all their different opinions and hopes is the perfect skill to have as he fills the role of the parish’s interim moderator.

The dad-of-three and grandadof-eight took up the role shortly after Easter, following David Brown retiring from the ministry after about 20 years at the parish.

Mattock himself retired from serving as a minister in Maniototo, in order to move to Ashburton about two years ago with wife Kim. He was working as a truck driver here and attending St Andrew’s as a parishioner when he accepted a request from fellow church-goers to become the interim moderator.

Mattock has served as a minister in parishes throughout New Zealand after coming to the role relatively late in life, not beginning in his first appointment, at Nelson, until the age of 39.

Prior to beginning study towards his Bachelor of Theology at the age of 35, he was a traffic policeman for about nine years, in Auckland and Christchurch. It was a job he loved, and was good at, exemplified by being marked the nation’s top cop the same year he resigned.

“I gave all that away and became a penniless student with three young children.”

His years in the police force had been accompanied by a spiritual awakening, which ultimately turned to an inner turmoil arising from a questioning of society’s tendency to use war

It’s all hands to the pump ahead of annual arts exhibition

Ashburton Art Gallery’s busiest month of the year is about to kick off, with the opening of the Ashburton Society of Arts 54th annual exhibition on Monday.

More than 400 pieces of all shapes and sizes are currently being installed by an army of helpers from the gallery and the society, following a “full-on” receiving day on Sunday.

Ashburton Society of Arts spokeswoman Jen Dearborn said tickets for the opening night were selling fast, and excitement was growing among the art community.

This year’s exhibition will see everything from ceramics to jewellery, sculpture and paintings on show, including the work of eight guest artists.

“There’s lots of big work and vibrantly coloured work this year,” Dearborn said.

“We’re really pleased with the standard.”

Lynda Topp will MC the opening on Monday night, and awards will be announced after a visit from judges on Sunday.

“It should be a really good night,” Dearborn said.

Ashburton Art Gallery curator manager Shirin Khosraviani said the exhibition is the biggest annual event on local art calendars, with the opening always eagerly anticipated.

For the past two years the opening has sold out, however a few remaining tickets are currently available from Ashburton Art Gallery for $25 per person.

“It’s a big social event and people are very excited,” Khosraviani said.

Jailed on assault charges An Ashburton man who used a tyre iron to hit another man and threatened to kill him was jailed for 18 months when he appeared in the Ashburton District Court this week.

Malcolm Eric Morunga, 46, had admitted two charges of as-

sault with intent to injure, threating to kill and driving while suspended.

Judge Joanna Maze said Morunga could apply to have the jail time converted to home detention if he could provide a suitable address.

The court was told earlier this year that Morunga drove to the complainant’s house, though his licence was suspended, and used a tyre iron to hit him on the forehead. Then he straddled the man and punched him repeatedly in the face while holding a rock in

his hand. He said he was going to kill him. Morunga was pulled off the complainant by family members and told to leave; the complainant went to the hospital for treatments to cuts to the head.

In court this week, Judge Maze refused to accept a home deten-

tion address put forward by Morunga’s lawyer Paul Bradford because the complainant was living there.

She also disqualified Morunga from driving for 12 months and remitted outstanding fines of $6678.

CDHB puts strike plans in place Canterbury District Health Board staff will this week begin calling people impacted by the nurses’ strike on July 5.

They include those who have an outpatient appointment or planned surgery.

Chief people officer for Canterbury and West Coast DHBs, Michael Frampton, said they would hope to reschedule appointments, however, in many cases that would not be possible.

“And therefore will confirm a new appointment as soon as we possibly can. During that phone call, we will also ask whether we can reinstate the original appointment at short notice if the industrial action does not go ahead,” Frampton said.

“If you have an outpatient appointment on July 5, or surgery planned in the days leading up to or on July 5, and haven’t heard from us by midday on Monday

Huntington’s has devastating consequences

Every day Jenny Soal likes to share how wonderful life is, and that it can never be taken for granted.

This is after losing her mother to Huntington’s disease and seeing her sister suffering from the illness.

Soal’s first experience of Huntington’s was at the age of about five, when her mother told her she had an illness that one day they would hopefully find a cure for.

It caused moodiness and jerky movements in its early years and gradually became more and more debilitating. As a teenager Soal saw her father do his best to bring up a teenage girl on his own while caring for her sick mother.

“I felt really alone like I was the only person in the world dealing with it.”

She found solace in meeting others of a similar age going through the same thing, at camps for children.

“I was amazed at how many other families were going through the same troubles as us,” she said. As it is hereditary, she and her two older siblings thought they could all have the same thing, however when they were tested she and her brother were clear.

“Unfortunately my sister came back positive. And so it begins again.”

Employed at EA Networks Centre Gym as a gym instructor, she is currently using her workplace as a base for a fundraiser for the Huntington’s disease Association, alongside fellow gym instructor Matthew Roxburgh.

Roxburgh came up with the idea of donating to the association following suggestions he

could shave his head for charity.

Soal was interested to find out he also has a family association with the illness, although this is on the science side as his uncle is a leading neurological researcher.

Donations have already started to come in for the fundraiser, which will kick off on Monday.

It will be in the form of a workout competition held over three weeks, and Soal and Roxburgh are hoping for some newbies to sign up after already receiving about one dozen entries.

The winner will be the person who completes the workouts with the best results.

The fundraiser will culminate with Roxburgh shaving his head and face, something he is looking forward to after having hair in these areas longer than he would have liked.

“The middle of winter is probably the worst time for it, but never mind,” he said.

It’s been revealed that an Auckland man shot by an American mother as he allegedly tried to break into her Virginia home, had plans to study law. Instead, Troy George Skinner is now facing up to life behind bars in a foreign country.

The 25-year-old had been chatting to a 14-year-old girl online, and despite her attempts to end contact, he travelled across the world, allegedly showing up to her Goochland home with duct tape, pepper spray and a knife. Speaking for the first time, Skinner’s close friend, James Stirling, said his actions were completely out of character and “bizarre”. “If he had mentioned [his plans] to anyone we would’ve told him how absurd it was and it would’ve ended there,” he said. “I’ve known him for so long and he’s never come off as creepy or anything like that.”

He said he knew about the trip but not about the girl.

Wakanui Whizzes off to grand finals

Throw an engineering and problem solving challenge at the Wanakui Whizzes, and they’ll have no trouble whipping up a solution.

The four-piece Wanakui School team has placed second in the regional heats for the annual Epro8 challenge, and is heading to Christchurch to compete in the grand finals next week.

During the competition, the team compete against 12 other teams at a time. They are given challenges to choose from and have to solve them by manner of mechanics, wiring things and building things – and each time they enter, the challenges are different, they explained.

They could include building a burglar alarm around a safe, an automatic party popper device or creating a 1.8 metre crane to lift a 1 kilogram weight.

At the three-hour regional semi-finals at Ashburton Borough School on Wednesday, Techno Templeton from Templeton School claimed first place, and Blobfish from Mount Hutt College came third.

The grand finals will be held next Wednesday at Linwood College.

Every year more than 9000 students from 800 schools from throughout New Zealand take part in the EPro8 challenge.

Women’s stories to be told

Main exhibition areas at Ashburton Museum will be changed permanently to reflect more stories of Mid Canterbury women.

Museum director Tanya Robinson said the change to exhibition space was being planned as 125 Suffrage celebrations approached.

As well as inserting more women’s stories into main exhibition spaces, there would be a special Suffrage 125 exhibition which would open on the eve of September 19, the date upon which the

Electoral Act 1893 granted women the vote 125 years ago.

“I think we cover our men’s stories really well, but we are looking at inserting more of our women’s stories into our main exhibition area,” Robinson said.

Often men had had the opportunity to be prominent in areas such as politics and business.

Many Mid Canterbury women had also been high achievers either in these same areas, or in their communities, helping to hold communities together.

The special Suffrage 125 exhibi-

tion is likely to be about women in Ashburton undertaking nontraditional jobs. Its launch will be held in association with a celebration of the anniversary of women’s suffrage in New Zealand.

This celebration is being organised by the Suffrage 125 Mid Canterbury committee, which is among committees throughout the country organising similar events.

Spokesperson Trish Small said she and many others from various groups, including Rural Women, Zonta, Inner Wheel and Women’s

Institute, were looking forward to the celebration, and excited about the significance of the occasion.

Small said New Zealand could be justly proud it had been the first country to allow the vote for women.

“It is amazing, we led the world.

England had its centennial this year and here we are 25 years on from that.”

For the early evening function on September 18 at the Ashburton Museum, committee members were in the process of organising a speaker from the Kate Sheppard

Trust. Suffrage 125 Mid Canterbury will also hold a suffrage walk on September 19, from the East Street chessboard to the Ashburton Domain, where a commemorative rose will be planted.

Shops are likely to be decorated for the 125th anniversary, and committee members are talking to retailers regarding window displays in the purple and white suffrage colours.

Small said she hoped both women and men from throughout Mid Canterbury would participate in the events planned.

Learning about life as a refugee

When teacher Mrs Goodhew took on the Oxfam Ration Challenge last week, Room 2 students at Our Lady of the Snows were eager to learn more, and help out where they could.

Using blankets the students created their own camp and spent a day living as a refugee. They also discussed what it would be like to live in a camp and wrote prayers for a refugee.

How long is too long on the road?

C

omments made by Grant Lowe in the media this week about his employees working 70-hour weeks will stir plenty of debate across the office smoko rooms for the remainder of the week.

Lowe, the general manger of Summerland Express Freight, has gone public in the wake of a string of accidents involving trucks in his fleet and stated that he believed working 70 hours a week was a good balance.

One of those accidents occurred in the Ashburton District earlier this year when one of his staff members fell asleep at the wheel and crashed – the result was a nine-hour clean-up job by emergency services to clear the road.

A source spoken to in the wake of Lowe’s comments said that staff in his employment are known for being pushed to their limits by management – and the track record of some of the staff in the follow-up from the spate of accidents would suggest that might be the case.

By law a truck driver is able to drive 13 hours per day before they must take an enforced 10-hour break with half hour breaks required every five and a

half hours of driving.

In the space of a week a driver is allowed to work 70 hours before they must take a 24-hour break from driving.

There’s nothing wrong with working long hours, and in some cases doing those hours day to day, but at some point enough is enough and a good break is required to refresh, re-engage and reinvigorate the mind for the next long haul.

What probably makes this situation even worse is the fact that these people are in charge of power machines on the road – lethal weapons if placed in wrong, or impaired hands.

A huge percentage of our truck driving nation are excellent drivers and have near faultless records, but the margins

of error are so much smaller than when you are just driving a normal car.

If you’ve ever driven long distance in your car, try and imagine that feeling after a fiveand-a-half-hour drive of finally reaching your destination.

All you ever want to do is put the feet up and relax, yet for our truckies it’s usually a 30-minute rest up and then back to it once again.

That’s tough. And to ask them to do that for 70 hours a week, seems a little extreme.

All truck drivers I know, love their job and we’re not for a minute here to put them in bad light or shine the spotlight on the long hours that they endure from week-to-week.

But there is a certain amount

of responsibility on the owners and operators of trucking firms to ensure that not only their own staff are safe and getting all the rest they require before hitting the road, but also to ensure the safety of every other person out there using the roads on any given day.

Unfortunately, it’s often the unexpecting who suffer the most in situations involving trucks – and so that responsibility is as important as anything else that business might do in their normal day of operation.

Lowe may well run a hugely successful business, but the track record of that business is starting to look a bit rough and unless he relaxes his work, work, work attitude – it’s hard to see it improving.

New Zealand’s prime minister Jacinda Ardern holding Neve Te Aroha alongside her partner Clarke Gayford ability to put up to $3120 per year into the pockets of local parents will help ensure our community’s next generation will be better supported during their most influential years.

However, it is kids, parents AND grandparents who breathe easier with the Families Package.

Around 1600 New Zealanders die each year due to cold housing in winter and thousands more end up in hospital. That’s not right.

We have more than 5800 elderly Kiwis in Ashburton and thousands of people on main benefits. From July 1, the new Winter Energy Payment will help

every one of them heat their homes. Providing our most vulnerable with up to $30 per week through to September, will mean $450 for single people and $700 for couples a year when fully implemented. What an overdue initiative.

For families forced to do more with less for far too long, we are boosting the rates and threshold of the Working for Families tax credit and bringing positive improvements to the Accommodation Supplement. This brings the minimum family tax credit up to $503 per week.

In total, over 365,000 families will get more money through

these initiatives than they would have through the ‘ghost policies’ of the previous Government.

Our Families Package takes care of families, warms our vulnerable and improves the quality of life for Kiwi kids.

This is the change New Zealanders voted for.

Coeliac awareness What a feast of Gluten Free Food we had!

Somewhere between 40 and 50 people dropped in to the Ashburton Parents’ Centre in Netherby last Friday for our Coeliac Awareness afternoon tea.

As well as the delicious goodies

baked by our members there was an amazing array of delicacies donated by 14 of the businesses that provide gluten free (gf ) food for their customers.

Not only did we eat well but folk were able to learn about coeliac disease and eating gluten free and also to see where they could find safe gf food in Ashburton.

Drains rule change worries farmers

A group of Eiffelton farmers is worried about the future of three drains that supply irrigation and support a special habitat for native fish.

The Eiffelton Community Group Irrigation Scheme has been operating since 1985 with support from Fish and Game but says a default setting in Environment Canterbury’s land and water regional plan could cause the drains to dry up, wasting 30 years of ecological work.

Farmers pump underground water into the drains to augment natural flow and also abstract water for irrigation. Abstraction is subject to minimum flows at Poplar Road but the farmers ensure water flows in the drains all year, protecting fish life and instream biodiversity.

A suite of changes to the land and water regional plan were made recently but did not incorporate recommendations by the

Hinds Drains Working Party for the existing minimum flow and allocation regime to remain.

Scheme spokesman Ian Mackenzie told Ashburton Water Zone Committee members this week that the futures of 14 farming families on the scheme depended on the existing arrangement remaining until the impact of other district-wide water augmentation work, like the Managed Aquifer Resource pilot, was clear.

This was unlikely to be before 2025, when the default allocation in the plan would come into play.

The default allocation would spell the end of the irrigation scheme with less water available.

He wanted the zone committee to push ECan for the existing regime on the Windermere, Home Paddock and Deals Drains to be part of another suite of changes to be made next year.

ECan staff say 12 months is a short time to gather the information needed to make the plan change.

Mackenzie said the existing regime already had the approval of farmers, conservation groups and others with an interest in the area and the drains working party had plenty of data.

The water zone committee decided to seek written approval of all the working party groups to ensure the process moved quickly and could be incorporated in the 2019 omnibus of plan changes.

Mackenzie said the farmers needed certainty as many had borrowed money for irrigation on the back of water consents.

It was equally important to keep the drains healthy and supporting a diverse range of fish life, that included long and short fin eel and bullies, trout, mudfish, lamprey and torrent fish.

He said after the meeting he was disappointed with the outcome of the committee’s discussion.

He had wanted the zone committee to support the irrigation scheme’s request but the process had simply been delayed.

Alliance’s winter workshops kick off in Methven Alliance is launching its winter workshop series for farmers in Methven next month.

The co-operative is holding 12 workshops across the country for a range of shareholders and those interested in supplying livestock to the company.

The series is aimed at Alliance’s female shareholders, existing shareholders and those entering the industry or returning to farming.

Attendees will receive an update on the latest developments at the co-operative, global markets and products. Alliance directors and staff will be on-hand to answer questions.

Heather Stacy, general manager livestock and shareholder services at Alliance, said the co-operative decided to extend its popular women’s workshops programme following feedback from farmers.

“The response from participants in our previous women’s workshops was that while they were keen to continue the women-only events, men would find workshops interesting and useful too.

“We know it is sometimes hard for farming couples to take time out from the farm at the same time, so this new programme provides options to suit everyone.

“These workshops are an excellent opportunity for shareholders to hear more about the co-operative and gain some key insights or those keen to be part of New Zealand’s only true 100 per cent farmerowned major red meat co-operative.”

The Methven workshops will be at Mount Hutt Memorial Hall on July 9.

The morning workshop, from 9.30am to 12.30pm, is for women, while another, from 1.30pm to 4.30pm, is open to all shareholders.

Synlait announces its new chief Former Fonterra senior manager Leon Clement will succeed John Penno as chief executive of Synlait.

Clement, managing director of Fonterra Brands New Zealand and prior to that Fonterra’s managing director of Sri Lanka and Indian Subcontinent, was appointed following co-founder and inaugural CEO John Penno’s announcement in November, 2017, of his intention to stand down.

“Leon has led major businesses internationally, specifically in Vietnam and Sri Lanka, and has deep experience in the branded dairy sector,” Synlait chairman Graeme Milne said.

“He brings a broad range of skills and experience that is relevant to Synlait’s future strategic initiatives.”

“The board of directors is pleased to have attracted a highcalibre candidate. With a reputable senior leadership team in place and an organisation of great people, we’re confident the incoming CEO has the skills and capabilities to lead Synlait to an even better future off the platform that has been created thus far.”

Having held numerous senior leadership positions throughout his career, Clement is excited by the opportunities Synlait has created and is looking forward to taking on the chief executive role in August.

“Synlait has been a major part of my life for the last 17 years, and I’m very proud of what we’ve achieved in a relatively short time,” Penno said.

“Leon’s appointment is a coup for our employees, dairy farmers and investors. He is absolutely the right person to be leading the company towards the profitable and sustainable opportunities we’re targeting.

“Having performed both an operational and governance role for over a decade in this organisation, I’m comfortable passing the operational baton to Leon and focusing my input at the governance level alongside fellow directors on the board.”

“On a personal note, I’m somewhat sad to be stepping down as CEO, but I’m actually more thrilled about the future that lies ahead for Synlait. The company has everything going for it and the outlook is very positive, so I’m glad I will still be a part of it, albeit in a different capacity,” Penno said.

Call to action all-encompassing A

report into examining how to prevent the continued decline in freshwater quality has called for action – not just from the farming sector but from urban communities as well.

The Land and Water Forum has responded to the Government’s request for advice on preventing further decline, managing sediment and controlling discharges of nitrogen to water by noting that while there has been some progress in water management reforms over the past five years, that’s only a start and further improvements are needed.

I don’t think anyone is going to disagree with that. New Zealand’s freshwater resources are dear to us all and it’s in everyone’s interests to do whatever we realistically can to ensure they improve.

In recent years farmers have copped a lot of blame for the decline in freshwater quality so it’s interesting that much of what the report recommends for rural areas, on the surface at least, are frameworks and goals that Mid Canterbury farmers are either working under or towards already.

They include good management practices, along with soil conservation and erosion control programmes that are, to some extent, already in place in some form.

ECan’s farm environment plans mean those who work the land in the area already have a good idea what they should be doing – as long as the goalposts are not moved significantly in the short term.

That said, there should be some optimism as a result of the planned staged approach to addressing the allocation of nitrogen discharges.

There are two other areas in the report that stand out for me – urban responsibilities and a lack of co-ordinated leadership.

been a burden shared across different parts of the country, with rural communities carrying more than their share of the can.

The report identifies that stronger measures are needed to address urban impacts on water quality, including regulating to prevent both the loss of streams and the pollution that can arise from urban building activity.

It also calls for the creation of standard consent requirements for stormwater and wastewater management to create consistency around the country.

Which brings us to leadership, or the lack of it.

Forum chairman Dr Hugh Logan points out that local authorities and courts have been left to interpret and implement an emerging framework without any effective oversight, which has slowed progress and resulted in inconsistencies.

Now I’m usually among the last to want new bodies created where none were needed before, as that usually results in unnecessary spending and in the end, bugger all in terms of concrete achievements.

However fresh water is one of, if not the most, valuable resources we have in New Zealand and there’s no denying its quality needs to be taken seriously.

Surely effective, co-ordinated leadership to achieve improvement in quality is something worth investing in.

Fined $16.3m on price-fixing charges Air New Zealand has been ordered to pay $A15 million ($16.3m) in penalties by an Australian court for its part in a global airfreight price-fixing cartel between 2002 and 2007.

“The Federal Court has ordered Air New Zealand (Air NZ) to pay $15 million in penalties after legal action by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission against a global air cargo cartel,” the ACCC said in a media statement.

“The court found Air NZ made and gave effect to agreements with other airlines to fix the price of fuel and insurance surcharges on air freight services from Hong Kong, and insurance and security charges from Singapore, to various locations, including Australian airports, between 2002 and 2007,” the Australian regulator said.

ACCC Commissioner Sarah Court said that the “illegal pricefixing agreements” reduced competition for transport costs for goods flown into Australia.

“This decision sends a strong warning to overseas and domes-

tic operators that the ACCC can and will continue to defend competition and the rights of Australian customers and businesses by taking action against anti-competitive conduct,” Court said.

The ACCC said that 14 airlines have now been fined $A113.5m since it launched its probe in 2006.

A judgment on penalty for a fifteenth airline, PT Garuda Indonesia, is still being decided.

The airline spent $10 million defending a claim from the New Zealand Commerce Commission, before cutting a $7.5 million settlement with the regulator, ending the domestic leg of the global cartel action in 2013.

The Commerce Commission reached settlements with 11 carriers, securing penalties totalling $45 million, or about 10 per cent of the revenue generated from air freight forwarding services in and out of New Zealand in 2006.

In 2016 the airline agreed to pay $52m in the United States to settle a case brought by authorities there as part of global action over the cargo cartel.

New Zealand’s richest man Graeme Hart has gone into business with his son Harry and the pair’s company has purchased cereal company Hubbards Food and Gregg’s sauces – right after buying Kiwi food company Hansells.

“The bringing together of Hubbards, Hansells and Gregg’s Sauces under Walter & Wild combines some of New Zealand’s best-known food brands into a food manufacturing powerhouse,” said Harry Hart, owner of Walter & Wild.

Graeme Hart is also a shareholder of Walter & Wild, a spokesman confirmed.

“The breadth of expertise,

manufacturing capability combined with an understanding of markets, both here and offshore will drive further growth and innovation.

“We now have a significant brand portfolio reaching consumers from breakfast to dessert,” said Harry Hart.

Brands in the Walter & Wild portfolio include Aunt Betty’s, Hansells, Hubbards’ mueslis and cereals; and Greggs table sauces.

Hubbards founder Dick Hubbard said: “After making the equivalent of 3 billion bowls of mueslis and cereals over 30 years, it is time to hand over the reins to a younger generation.

“In selecting a buyer, it was important that Hubbards remained in New Zealand ownership. I’m very pleased to have achieved that goal.

“Harry and his team have the energy and enthusiasm to take Hubbards forward. I am really proud of what Diana and I have achieved.

“The company is in excellent shape with a strong management team, and the brand is a clear market leader in muesli.

We had a lot of fun along the way, and I want to thank New Zealand for the opportunity to serve,” said Hubbard.

IRD says sorry for GST glitch The Inland Revenue has apologised for a glitch which caused problems for people trying to lodge GST returns online and says the issue is now fixed.

The problems came to light after the accountant’s association spoke out about its members experiencing a number of problems including slow access to the IRD’s online service myIR and filing GST returns.

John Cuthbertson, tax leader at Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, said its members had been reporting slow access to the myIR system and problems loading returns for two weeks.

“It is when they access myIR things are very slow. People trying to file their GST returns early have been able to do it, but have had problems with lodging it. There has been a whole range of things like that.”

He said the problems were compounded by the phone system being already busy at this time of year.

The association met with the IRD last week to discuss the issues but Cuthbertson said the department had been unusually “quiet” on the problems.

Yesterday the IRD released a statement saying it believed the problems with its GST processing system were now resolved and blamed it on a network load rebalancer at the Inland Revenue’s telecommunications provider.

“Initially the problems had appeared to affect only a few customers, it had been growing, but it was thought the problem was with customer log-ins.

“However some very specific customer feedback yesterday led IR investigations to the problem with the provider’s network load rebalancer. That was quickly fixed

by the provider.” The Inland Revenue apologised to affected customers.

“IR apologises to affected customers we understand how frustrating it has been in the lead up to the GST filing date.”

It said most customers were now managing to file their GST returns.

But it urged anyone who may have problems meeting the filing deadline because of the problems to get in touch.

“If any customer has difficulty meeting their GST filing date because of issues with our online services, let us know, and we’ll be reasonable about that.”

The spokeswoman said the problems appeared to be isolated to those trying to do GST returns.

“This hasn’t impacted other types of tax, for example income tax or people seeking tax refunds.”

matic, then add the onion and cook, stirring continuously until the onion begins to colour.

■ Add the garlic and ginger and cook for a further 30 seconds.

Add the lamb pieces and cook, stirring until the lamb is well coated in the spices. Add the cayenne pepper, beef stock and 3/4 C water and bring to a simmer. Cover saucepan with a tight fitting lid and simmer gently for about an hour or until the lamb is tender. Stir through the garam masala and chopped coriander.

■ Remove the bay leaves, cinnamon stick and cardamom pods

before serving. Serve lamb curry with roti, cucumber raita and rice if you wish.

■ Slow cooker option: Preheat slow cooker for 20 minutes.

Place lamb and other ingredients, except garam masala and coriander, into the slow cooker and cook on low for 6-8 hours.

Stir through the garam masala and coriander and remove the bay leaves, cinnamon stick and cardamon pods before serving.

Just a quick catch up from the weekend. I think all the President Cup games went as predicted.

Barry used his shots well to get past Blair. Murray forgot his earmuffs so Leaky ended up living rent free in his head for the entire game. Ian and Pat played a game of “To me, no, to you” for the entire 18 holes. Both trying to give each other the match, in the end Pat was more insistent and Ian progressed.

Charlie just strung Spud along for four hours. It was pitiful seeing Spud’s little legs going hell for leather as Charlie just strolled around smelling the flowers. He even let the game go down the 19th, but as soon as Spud saw a faint flicker of light, it was snuffed in an instant. Very cruel! And I think he may be scarred for a long while.

Other winners were Gordy Crawford, Chris Lovelock, Braydon wood and Brian Fauth. So this Saturday Charlie will find a much tougher opponent in Gordy, should be a good scrap but I think Charlie should progress. School teacher Barry will make Leaky put his finger on his lips, keep quiet and stand in the corner, and then I think he will go through at a canter.

Brian will get a few shots from Braydon and should make them count for a positive outcome.

Then Chris just needs to turn up to pick up his gift wrapped passage through to the semi-final from Ian. There is also a plate being played for the players who missed out in the first round, so good luck to all.

We won’t mention the Pennants teams, except to say that Hoppy’s Redpath team got a lucky draw, which ended up being the best result of the day by far. This writer has learned that three of the teams congregated after the games at the Jolly Potter in Temuka to drown their sorrows and a long evening ensued.

I believe that men’s captain Bruce Day has really got to pull these boys into line, too busy organising after match drinks before they even play. Then again I suppose when said captain is dancing on tables in student bars around Dunedin after the All Blacks test match and missed the golf, it’s very hard to throw stones.

Mid Canterbury Ladies Friendship Club President Val Johnson welcomed members and a visitor to the recent meeting of the Mid Canterbury Ladies Friendship Club. After the National Anthem was sung, birthdays and anniversaries were celebrated. President Val inducted a new member, Karine Crum. Members were reminded of the overnight trip to Kaikoura planned for September 18/19, also the mid-winter mystery bus and luncheon trip on 11 July.

The mini speaker was Adair Pethig who told of her role that she commenced at 206 Club, which is a social group with no joining fee. They have lots of activities for their guests including housie, bring and buy, music, jokes, poems and guest speakers. After the hot meal there are more activities including cards, reading, jigsaws and ludo. There is a need for more volunteers to assist. 206 Club is under Age Concern which also provides other services – Total Mobility assessment, courtesy driving service, exercise class, Hip Hop for Seniors, Advocacy and others.

The main speaker was Jackie Girvan who told of Presbyterian Support, even though she is retiring soon. She reminded the members that everyone needs something to love, to do and to hope for.

Jackie has been in the work force for 47 years, the last 15 at Presbyterian Support. She was trained as a nurse and then was Health Promoter for 13 years. When she commenced at Presbyterian Support there were 6 staff members, now there are 20.

Some of the services they provide are counselling, budgeting and youth service. There are parenting programmes for 3-8 year olds and a social worker is provided for one school, also Play Therapy for 5-12 year olds. A social worker works with older people.

They are looking at housing for people who cannot afford rent. Now there is a boarding house with 9 bedrooms and a sleep out that will accommodate 14 residents.

Jackie considers Ashburton people to be generous.

More accommodation is to be provided. Presbyterian Support has about 1000 clients. Jackie is also a trustee on the Ashburton Benevolent Trust and is continuing in her role as chairman of the Ashburton Housing and Support Trust. Jackie was thanked for her presentation. Target Shooting Mid Canterbury The South Island Championships took place at various venues throughout the Island at the weekend.

Both our clubs were well represented and members figured highly in the results. Our juniors once again proved dominant with Shania Harrison-Lee being crowned Junior Champion, from Lanelle MillarMcArthur 2nd and Emma Smith 10th in the Junior championship. In other grades: Lanelle McArthur 7th Master grade, Steve McArthur 14th Master grade and Sandy Bennett 17th Master Grade, Shania 2nd B grade, Keith Bonnington 6th C grade also performed well.

Greg Menzies of the Ashburton club came from behind with a possible 200.11 to be the Outright South Island Champion while Darian Miller who lives here but shoots out of the little Pleasant Valley Club pipped our own Shania Harrison-Lee to become

Run and Walk Ashburton Run and Walk Ashburton had a variety of meets happening on Saturday June 23. Five early bird runners braved the cold, frosty morning completing a 10km run down the river track. They were rewarded for their early morning start with a brilliant sun rise. Afterwards a coffee was enjoyed by all.

Ten members travelled to Timaru in the afternoon for the Aorangi Cross Country Champs held at the Scenic Reserve. The kids did two laps of the lake, approximately 1.5km, Under 16 girls

The T.S.M.C. executive and coaches have got their heads together and have decided on a new initiative to further promote junior shooting in our area.

Starting this weekend will be a Junior Training Initiative. A small number of promising juniors will be invited to attend regular training/coaching sessions at weekends. Existing junior team members will be invited to take part as well and act as mentors/role models for the newer shooters. Senior members of both clubs have indicated a desire to take part as well so that they may gain experience and skill in coaching. We see this as a win/win/win situation and additional juniors will be added as they are recommended by club coaches. The first juniors to be invited into the programme are Jacob Swan, Jacob Kilworth, Mitchell Taylor, Charlotte McKenzie, Brontson Cudmore and Ben Thomas. I am assured that there are at least another four likely candidates. Already executive members of the clubs can see the huge potential of this initiative and are planning on extending it to include new promising

4km, women runners and walkers 6km and the men completed 10km. The day was cloudy and cool, especially cold in the bush with frost still present, but overall conditions pretty good. A fun afternoon was had by all who travelled.

Back in Ashburton the Afternoon Social Meet had 14 members who gathered and enjoyed a walk and run around the Allenton area in sunny but fresh conditions.

The afternoon finished back at the domain with afternoon tea.

Tinwald Golf Club June 23 The first round of match play in the RSA Trophy got under way on Saturday with many close games played, with several going extra holes to find a winner.

Congratulations to all winners and commiserations to the losers, who as announced on Saturday, will play in the RSA Plate next weekend.

As many involved in match play will know a few warm-up holes prior to your match can be beneficial – Legs Anderson took this to a new level after turning up for a round on Saturday morning forgetting that he had a scheduled match in the afternoon (as did Selwyn Munro, but who had the good sense to head home again) Being the finely tuned athlete he is Legs played the morning round, and after a quick bevy donned the spikes again to take on Snow Pierce in his match. A ten-shot improvement on his morning round was

unfortunately not enough to overcome Snow who came out the victor (rumour has it that Snow was particularly harsh on a tiring Legs with his tired legs, playing the last few holes at a jog in an effort to claim the win!)

The remaining players not involved in match play played a stroke round in the 1st round of the Alan Teale Memorial Trophy.

The best of these was Brent Kirdy with a nett 65, well clear of his next rival Brent Smith with a 72.

Triples team turns gold trick Robyn Atkinson had a golden weekend to remember when she played her part in winning the Ashburton Indoor Bowls Championship Triples at the McNally Street stadium.

Atkinson, along with her Willowby clubmates Ken and Rowena Mackenzie emerged victorious in the annual competition after seeing off the challenges of a strong field of competitors during Saturday’s afternoon of play.

The win carried extra special reasons for Atkinson as it also gave her a fifth Ashburton championship title, meaning she also gained her Gold Star for the effort.

Atkinson gained her first title back in 2012 when she won the Championship Pairs and has since added the triples (2012), fours (2016) and pairs (2017) along with Saturday’s success.

She is the 27th individual to

gain a gold star in the association.

Ten teams entered the competition, with four sides working through to post-section play after the four rounds of qualifying.

Russell Ellis, John Cuthbertson and Kevin Smith along with Murray Bassett, Graeme Chapman and Lynette Bassett were the beaten semi-finalists. The Willowby team were joined in the final by the in-form Mark Sheard along with Lester and Gaynor Hurst – with the former proving too strong in the final.

Players will be back in action shooting for another major title this weekend on both Friday night and Saturday when the Jim Patterson Championship Singles goes on the line.

Qualifying is held on both Friday night and Saturday morning before the knockout stages on Saturday afternoon.

Fresh from his hat-trick on the wing against France last weekend in Dunedin, Rieko Ioane will play at second-five for the Blues against the Reds at Eden Park on Friday.

Sonny Bill Williams’ shoulder is partly responsible for the selection by coach Tana Umaga, but with fullback Michael Collins starting alongside Ioane at centre, the Blues midfield has an unorthodox look about it as they attempt to win their first home game of the season. Despite being the best left wing in the world, with 16 tries in 16 tests, Ioane’s preferred position is centre, but he has struggled to impose himself in the midfield for the Blues this season and there will be further scrutiny on him in the Blues’ final home match of the season. Another loss to the Reds would be their eighth at home this season and would represent a new low.

Coach Kirwan out?

Sir John Kirwan’s rugby coaching career could be over. In a lengthy interview with 66 magazine, the All Blacks great reflected on his time as a coach, admitting that he doesn’t plan on coaching again.

“I never say never, but I’m not planning on coaching again,” Kirwan told the magazine. After a storied All Blacks career, Kirwan coached for over 15 years, which included a tumultuous three years with the Blues. Under Kirwan’s tenure, the Blues finished 10th in 2013 and 2014, and 14th in 2015 – their worst season in franchise history. He resigned in June of 2015 with just 16 wins. The 53-year-old didn’t give any excuses but said he would have liked more time to turn things around at the club. - NZME

Plenty to smile about for AB prop

Junior boys battle it out for basketball glory Ashburton College’s Marc Calzada makes his way toward the hoop at yesterday’s Aoraki junior boys’ basketball tournament at the EA Networks Centre while gaining some intense pressure from his Mount Hutt College rival.

Eleven teams, from across eight schools in the Aoraki region took part in the competition which saw two grades competing. Included in the make up of

the tournament were three teams from Ashburton College and one from Mount Hutt College.

Neither school was able to walk away at the end of the day as an overall grade winner, but Mount Hutt College did play their way into the B grade final only to dip out to a strong Waitaki Boys’ High School side 47-33 in a thrilling final.

Waitaki made it a clean sweep for the

day when they also claimed the A Grade final. They were too slick for their rivals Roncalli, winning 60-43 to cap a memorable day of basketball.

Organisers of the event said that the day went smoothly and there was some great basketball on offer by students from across the Aoraki region.

Breakers take on NBA’s Phoenix Suns For years, the New Zealand Breakers have encouraged their players to chase their NBA dreams. Now, those players will be able to do so while wearing Breakers jerseys.

The Breakers have been confirmed to play the Phoenix Suns on October 3 in Arizona, marking the first time a New Zealand side will go head-to-head against NBA opposition.

The pre-season clash is part of

a trio of games pitting the best of the Australian NBL against the NBA, and after Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane got the opportunity last year, this time the Breakers get to show the NBA what New Zealand has to offer.

Breakers general manager Dillon Boucher is ecstatic to receive the opportunity.

“I can’t think of anything more high profile than this,” Boucher told the Herald.

“Having the opportunity to have our players go up against the world’s best, it’s always something you want to measure yourself on.

“We made it very clear last season when teams went up that we’d love the opportunity to be involved. With our connections up in the States with [new owner] Matt Walsh and his ownership group and through the NBL, it helped make the game a reality.”

The game will give a rare opportunity for the Breakers players to test their skills against the best in the world. Tom Abercrombie and Corey Webster will get another crack against NBA opposition, while the likes of Shea Ili and Finn Delany have the floor to showcase their talents as their burgeoning careers develop.

They’ll be going up against two of the NBA’s most hyped young talents.

“Definitely an unforgettable one.”

That’s the smiling, yet extremely proud response from Karl Tu’inukuafe when asked about his initial taste of All Blacks rugby.

The North Harbour prop is back in camp with the Chiefs following the conclusion of the three test series with France at the weekend.

The 25-year-old made his international debut at Eden Park, just over three months after his unexpected introduction to Super Rugby at the same venue.

Tu’inukuafe’s story has struck a chord with many fans, going from suffering from health issues related to being overweight, to becoming an international rugby player.

The barrel-chested, mustachioed loosehead received a rousing welcome upon entering test rugby for the first time, then earned even bigger cheers in Wellington and Dunedin.

“Oh man it was crazy,” he chuckles, searching for words to describe what that was like.

“I don’t know how to explain it – I’m just very happy with how everyone has been making me feel welcome and part of everything.”

Tu’inukuafe produced three solid outings off the All Blacks bench; strong in the scrum (just ask French tighthead Rabah Slimani, whom he monstered in his involvement in Auckland) excellent lifting in the lineouts (a skill underappreciated by most) and good in the tight as well as defensively.

However it’s the off-field lessons that Tu’inukuafe believes will help him and his franchise in the last stanza of his initial Super Rugby season.

He acknowledges the heightened importance given to preparation in the All Blacks camp, which he thinks is where he can definitely improve in his game. ”I’ve learnt a whole lot even from just watching players and seeing how they do things.

“And then there’s [All Blacks forward coach] Mike Cron with the small tips that he’ll throw into the scrums and a whole lot of things that change the way you look at things”.

Lady Lira set for bigger test Promising juvenile Lady Lira has put herself in the running for a crack at a late season black type feature.

She put the Listed Courtesy Ford Ryder Stakes (1200m) in her sights, at a venue yet to be confirmed following drainage work at its usual Otaki home, with a dominant performance to win at Rotorua yesterday.

Lady Lira was purposefully kept wide in the running during the Christmas Fun Racing 28 2YO (1230m) and she proved far superior to Meryace and Red Forest, who were both making their first appearances.

“I said to Matt (Cameron) that the middle of the track was the place to be,” said Andrew Forsman, who trains the youngster with Murray Baker.

“She jumped well to get into the right position and she got the job done nicely. We’ll probably look at the Ryder now for a bit of black type for her.”

Dunn grounded by US visa issues Dexter Dunn’s American dream is turning into a nightmare. But the 10-time champion reinsman is still hoping to get to North America this winter for what is now shaping as a shortened working holiday.

Dunn expected to leave New Zealand two weeks ago to drive in North America for up to four months but that goal has been stymied by visa issues.

US immigration are withholding a working visa until, as Dunn understands it, he can provide more prove he is world class at his job.

Although the internet would seem to to provide ample proof of that, especially considering Dunn has won the World Driving Championships, the process has slowed to an alarming rate.

“I now have a lawyer up there working on it for me,” says Dunn.

“It is frustrating and obviously I had hoped to be up there driving already but there isn’t much I can do about it.

“I respect the fact it is harder to get

working visas up there than it used to be but I am still keen to go.

“But really I would have liked to be there at least two weeks ago, getting some drives and setting up for the summer.

“So I am still hopeful it will happen but if it takes too long I might not go at all. I’m really in limbo at the moment and can’t plan anything, here or there, until I know about the visa.”

Dunn says if his visa come through in the next two or three weeks he could still drive for the entire months of August and September in the States before deciding whether he comes back to New Zealand in early October.

If he does go, his return is becoming increasing likely because every day he is not in the States is another step further from picking up the drive on a serious stakes horses for one of the summer features.

And unless Dunn was having a magical run or had a realistic winning hope in a series like the Breed-

ers Crown in late October, he would have little reason to stay in the US and miss the build up to New Zealand Cup week.

“But I am still keen to go, to drive and to learn so hopefully it can all be resolved soon,” he told the Herald yesterday.

Dunn isn’t letting the paperwork hassles affect his winter form as he has driven superbly over the last week and even closed the gap on runaway premiership leader Blair Orange to below 20.

But he had given up a while ago on retaining the title he has won the last 10 straight years and instead has a different goal should he not be Stateside inside a few weeks.

“I’m only five shy of 200 or the season again so that is my new goal and it would be good to get there again.”

Orange is on 214 going into a busy weekend of racing and only needs 16 more wins to pass Dunn’s national mark for either equine code of 229 wins set last season.

BASKETBALL P17 Breakers take on NBA stars

Just weeks after earning themselves promotion to Mid Canterbury netball’s top grade for the first time, Mt Somers are in danger of facing a relegation play-off.

But they’re not alone.

Three of the six teams in Mid Canterbury Netball’s ACL premier one grade are in danger of having to play in that promotion/relegation match with only one round of games left in round two of the competition.

Tonight, just who will play the team that finishes on top of round two in the premier two grade for the right to play the season’s third and final round in the top flight,

will be found. But just who it is, is anyone’s guess.

Mt Somers, United A and Ashburton College A all have their fate in their hands. They all need to win to give themselves the best chance of staying up in premier one, with United A bottom of the table on four points, and Mt Somers and Ashburton College A just narrowly ahead of them on six points.

With none of those three teams playing each other tonight, the results of all three games will have an impact on the outcome.

Mt Somers – the team that gained automatic promotion to premier one at the end of round one – have what looks like the

toughest ask, with a Celtic A side that hasn’t been beaten all season their opponent in the last game of the round.

But Celtic A head into that match off the back of a game where they were really pushed for the first time this season, with United A managing to stay within a couple of goals of them for much of the match in last week’s round.

While Celtic A eventually got there by six, they were kept under 30 goals for the first time this season.

If Celtic A maintain their unbeaten record tonight though, that means Mt Somers would be counting on other results to go their way.

United A will need goal shoot Olivia McLennan to repeat the fine form which helped her side push Celtic A last week, when they take on Methven A tonight.

Methven A, both Mt Somers and Ashburton College would be safe and United A would face relegation. But if United A won, it would come down to Mt Somers and Ashburton College A. Ashburton College A has drawn Hampstead as their final round two opponents. The blue and golds are coming off a narrow victory over Mt Somers, while Ashburton College A led at all threequarter breaks against Methven A last week but ended up behind at the final whistle.

If Ashburton College A and Mt Somers lost and find themselves on the bottom of the points table together, it will come down to goal differential. Heading into

tonight’s game, Mt Somers are ahead on goal differential.

Just who the bottom placed team from premier one will play in that promotion/relegation game next Tuesday night will also be decided tonight.

Celtic B (16 points) are top in premier two heading into the last round and the team demoted from premier one after round one – Southern (12 points) – are the only ones with a chance to steal that top of the table placing away from them.

Celtic B take on Celtic C tonight, while Southern was down to play Rakaia A. Ashburton College B and Methven A are the other match tonight.
