Rugby player jailed 3 years A Mid Canterbury rugby player was yesterday jailed for more than three years for sexually assaulting a woman in Gisborne.

Kolinio Yabia Tamanitoakula, 25, a Fijian national from Ashburton, was jailed for three years, four months and two weeks, after previously pleading guilty to a charge of assault with intent to commit sexual violation.

Defence counsel Leighvi Maynard told the Gisborne District Court Taman-

itoakula had only been in New Zealand a short time before assaulting the woman on October 2, after a representative rugby match in Ruatoria.

He had previously been of good character and had no criminal convictions in Fiji.

He accepted he had caused considerable pain and distress for the victim and her family, and accepted that his actions had been “indefensible”, Maynard said.

His client had only been in New Zealand a short time.

He was not used to drinking alcohol but was intoxicated in the company of team mates.

“It is no exaggeration to say that his actions were utterly out of character for him.”

Quake-prone building assessments narrowed

The financial impact of the Buildings (Earthquake-prone Buildings) Amendment Act 2016 is not as significant as previously thought, the Ashburton District Council’s environmental services committee heard yesterday.

Building services manager Michael Wong reported to the council that the scope of required assessments did not need to be extended to buildings built after 1976.

He had originally estimated that a further 800 to 850 buildings would need to be assessed for being earthquake-prone.

“But this target is now significantly reduced to dealing with pre-1976 buildings that were missed in our original desktop review in 2012,” he said.

The act came into force on July 1, and as of this date the council had recorded 89 properties containing earthquakeprone buildings. There were 167 properties assessed as having buildings being not earth-

quake-prone and 67 properties as having buildings built prior to 1976 which require an engineering assessment to be provided.

Placards are to be placed on entrances to alert the public of earthquake safety ratings, and Wong said he was to attend a briefing next month to get more information on this.

The council would then contact building owners to explain the process.

Ashburton District has been classified as a medium-risk zone. This provided council with 10 years to identify potentially earthquake-prone public and commercial buildings, one year for building owners to provide an engineer’s assessment and finally 25 years to strengthen the building.

Priority buildings would have half the identification and strengthening timeframes.

Once buildings are classified as being earthquake-prone, it is council’s responsibility to update the national EQB Register.

Students clear winners in debate

Crafty arguments, witty one-liners and epic debating “smack downs” were flying across the Ashburton College auditorium stage on Wednesday night, as the Youth Council went head-to-head with the Ashburton District Council.

The teams met to debate the tongue-in-cheek moot “are councils still relevant today?” with the district council ironically negating, and attempting to prove their own irrelevance.

They were unsuccessful in doing so and the Youth Council walked away with the trophy for the second year in a row.

The Ashburton Youth Council consisted of Henry Hickman as first speaker, Alyce Lysaght as second and Sophie Kettley as third. Their winning argument used a rock prop to emphasise that “communication rocks”, and the analogy of filling a pothole to prove why some processes should not be left to citizens.

“Society without the council would go to hell in a handbag,” reasoned Hickman.

The District Council team starred Mark Malcolm as first speaker, Leen Braam as second and Selwyn Price as third. Props also featured heavily in their argument, with Braam wheeling a zim-

mer frame onto the stage and asking why the running of the district should be left to “three geriatrics” like themselves.

“We need fresh, innocent youth to be in charge,” Malcolm said.

Selwyn joked that you only need to read the comments on Ashburton Guardian articles to see why people think their council is irrelevant.

After a fierce half hour of debating, judge Shannon Beynon awarded a makeshift trophy in the form of a Trevor the Mallard soft toy duck to the deserving Youth Council.

“The Youth Council is a very clear winner,” she said.

Former Mid Canty rugby player jailed for three years From P1 Crown prosecutor Jo Rielly said Tamanitoakula’s level of intoxication was “no excuse” for committing a “significant offence” that would have “ongoing consequences” for him and

his victim. The victim had been walking alone in the Gisborne CBD on the night of October 12.

Tamanitoakula had been walking with a group of associates who had been “yelling and whistling” at the woman as she

walked in front of them.

Tamanitoakula followed her alone, and called out to her but she ignored him.

As she crossed the Peel St bridge he grabbed her by the arms and pushed her down a

flight of steps into Kelvin Park.

He then forced her to the ground and kissed her. He pulled down her trousers and tried to rape her.

The victim was then able to get away when a passing car dis-

tracted Tamanitoakula.

Judge Warren Cathcart said the victim regularly walked past the site of the attack and had to relive the “horrendous event”, which continued to have a “devastating effect” on her.

Locks farewelled for donation to Canteen

Three staff of the Ashburton District Council entered the Ashburton College auditorium with full heads of hair and left with naught but cold, shiny scalps on Wednesday night.

Leen Braam, Vincie Billante and Russell Ellis opted to lose their locks for the worthy cause of Canteen, a charity that supports children living with cancer.

Due to their fundraising efforts and donations from the audience, $4038 was raised for the charity.

A new Fitbit was also auctioned off to contribute to the funds, donated to the event by Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel.

“We’ve all been touched by cancer in some form,” Billante said.

After warning her hairdress-

ers “don’t you dare leave me with a mullet”, she continued to describe the decision as “a very small gesture”.

“It was a no-brainer,” Braam said.

Ellis said his decision to go bare-headed was inspired by two main reasons.

“Firstly, it’s a really great cause,” he said.

And the other thing is to support the Youth Council. I’ve seen a lot of kids come and go in my time and I can tell you this group is an absolutely fantastic bunch.”

Billante successfully raised the most money of the trio via her Givealittle page, collecting $2760 from 56 generous donors.

“Our hair will grow back,” she said. But losing our hair is nothing compared to what these kids go through.”

Youths scuffle, force way into library

Disorderly youths are causing problems at the Ashburton Public Library and have been trespassed from the premises.

Disorderly youths are continuing to make their presence known in Ashburton, and some have been trespassed from the town’s library.

In a written report to the council’s service delivery committee yesterday, library manager Jill Watson said there had been an incident on July 1, and she added verbally that there had been an additional incident this week.

On Wednesday night several youth were on the roof of the library about 7pm when it was still open, “running around in the dark”.

It was a problem which had occurred before and the council’s property officer was to look into what could be done.

After the meeting Watson explained the property officer would

be examining ways to stop them being able to climb onto the roof.

She was concerned they could hurt themselves or someone else.

“Somebody has to think for them because they are not thinking for themselves,” Watson said.

Police had responded, and police confirmed yesterday they had attended and “the incident was noted”.

Watson said she had had it suggested to her that the library could restrict its 24/7 wi-fi service to help keep disorderly youths away, but she did not want to do this because it would punish other library users.

The youths were restricted in places to congregate because they had been trespassed from many other areas.

The incident on Saturday, July 1 involved five young people in the

library entrance foyer when the library was closing at 1pm.

There was a scuffle, during which some group members forced their way back into the building damaging the doors.

Security personnel and police attended, and the five were trespassed from the library for two years.

“It is frustrating to see youngsters behaving in this pointless and self-defeating manner, but with the safety of the public and staff at risk, there was no other option but to do this,” she said in the report.

A report from the Ashburton Museum followed, and director Tanya Robinson told councillors that security personnel had warned her about the possibility of disorderly youths coming to the premises.

Skiers urged to slow down

Police have their eye on skiers breaking the speed limit on roads leading to Mt Hutt Skifield.

Skiers were putting their foot down most commonly on State Highway 77 and Rakaia Barrhill Methven Road, said Sergeant Stephen Burgerhout of the Highway Patrol.

Motorists from Christchurch were more likely to travel through Darfield on SH73/77 Hororata, along Bealey Road or the Rakaia Barrhill Methven Road than use Thompsons Track, he said.

“We are extremely concerned to see so many drivers confident they can exceed the speed limit and still safely deal with any issue that may confront them on winter roads, as they would on a dry summer road.

“Taking this attitude to driving any of our roads in New Zealand is dangerous, let alone roads which are regularly affected by snow and ice.

“The speed limit is not a target, it’s the maximum legal speed that you can travel at on a road in ideal conditions – and they often don’t exist on our roads in winter.”

Burgerhout said motorists needed to drive sensibly, be aware of the road conditions and

“Another concern we have for drivers across the Ashburton District is black ice. There are shaded sections of road throughout the area which motorists need to look out for.

He said black ice was hard to detect and drivers needed to think about danger spots if there was a frost.

“Have you ever seen black ice before you have driven onto it?

No? Me neither, no one has. So please be aware of areas where

it could be, and approach those corners at a sensible speed.

“When you get in your vehicle think – has the weather been bad? Was there a heavy frost last night? If yes, road conditions most likely won’t be as good as they have been. If you think like this and then drive to the conditions, you’ll have a much safer journey on our roads.”

Firewood-deprived home owners might be scrambling for alternate ways to combat the chill, but need to remember air quality regulations, according to Environment Canterbury.

Sold-out firewood merchants have reported their usual customers opting for substitutes like coal instead of wood.

Perplexed Ashburton motorists had to manually negotiate their way through the East Street/ Havelock Street intersection following traffic light outages on Tuesday and Wednesday. The traffic lights were reportedly off around midday on Tuesday and on Thursday evening. There were also reports of traffic lights flashing orange at the intersection between East Street and Moore Street. The Ashburton District Council advised yesterday that a contractor had fixed the traffic lights, with no further reports of issues. Drivers successfully managed to apply their right-of-way rules and no crashes were reported. Any further issues with traffic lights should be reported to the Ashburton District Council.

However coal can also be more environmentally detrimental than wood.

“The burning would have to meet Environment Canterbury’s requirement for no visible smoke coming out of the chimney for more than 15 minutes,” said Environment Canterbury director of air quality Katherine Trought.

She said the coal itself also has to fit to regulations, and have a sulphur content of less than one

per cent by weight.

When store-bought, sulphur content is often advised on the packaging by the supplier.

A 2014 study by Massey University pointed to coal as a “major source” of air pollution across New Zealand, and described coal as a potential health hazard when used by households because it can “lead to poor air quality within the households”.

The Ministry for the Environment also states on its website that multi-fuel burners (includ-

ing coal burners) are not recommended forms of heating because of the increased particulate matter emissions they produce.

They warn that coal burners produce more emissions than other types of domestic heating.

The most energy efficient and environmentally-friendly forms of heating suggested by the New Zealand government are flued gas heaters, wood pellet burners, heat pumps and modern woodburners.

A missing Kapiti woman who hadn’t been in touch with her family for four days has been found safe. 41-year-old Tamzyn Whitehead went to her local police station after family raised the alarm, concerned for her safety.

She was last sighted at the Waikanae shopping centre, on Wellington’s Kapiti Coast on July 24.

Jailed for assaults A Westport man has been jailed for three-and-a-half years for indecently assaulting a young girl multiple times. Peter James Hartigan, 31, appeared in the Westport District Court on Wednesday for sentencing. He had earlier been found guilty of 19 charges of indecently assaulting a child. Both the pre-sentence report and psychologist’s report recommended Hartigan be treated in a special sex offender unit within prison. His conviction means he will be placed on the child sex offender register.

Gunman’s sister speaks out The sister of the Northland gunman said the shooting was a “terrible thing for all involved” and says she believed he killed himself because of the tragic nature of his actions.

“It’s a tragic thing to happen. He [shooter Quinn Patterson] would have thought what he did was terrible and that’s why he killed himself. He was never of that nature.

Physically hurting people deliberately – no, it was never his thing,” she said of her brother.

She said Patterson had cleaned himself up and had been turning his life around over the past 15 years but had been struggling with suicidal thoughts in recent months.

“He was doing well at work and things were getting better until recently.”

She and her brother were quite close and spoke often – he called her and left a message for the last time late Wednesday morning.

Patterson shot and killed Wendy Campbell and her daughter, Natanya, about 10.50am on Wednesday during what police say was a routine property inspection.

Contractor Jeff Pipe, who was with the women, was also shot but managed to get away. He re-

mains in Whangarei Hospital in a stable condition.

Police fired tear gas into the home but the gunman fired several shots back. Police returned fire.

Soon after the exchange, thick dark smoke started to billow from the house and before long it was “fully engulfed” in flames.

Police removed the women’s bodies from the scene yesterday afternoon but said they had not yet located Patterson’s body.

Northland District Commander Superintendent Russell Le Prou said Wednesday’s events had understandably sent shockwaves through the community.

“The victims were just simply doing their job when the offender has suddenly turned on them. Police are doing everything we can to support their families during this difficult time.

“Our AOS and police staff did everything they could and, despite knowing there was an active shooter in the immediate vicinity, AOS have still entered the property to see if there was any chance they could save Wendy and Natanya,” Le Prou said.

“AOS staff formed a shield around medically trained po-

lice staff but tragically there was nothing we could do.

“Given the danger posed to them they have then sought cover. They put their lives in danger yesterday and I am proud of the professionalism they showed in a volatile and changing situation.”

Exclusive footage by the Herald revealed the full extent of the crime scene north of Whangarei.

Smoke and embers could still be seen coming from the remains of the home along Mt Tiger Road, which was razed to the ground after it caught fire following an exchange of gunfire between a gunman inside and police.

Another building on the property, which appears to be a work shed or sleepout, has seemingly escaped the fire which burned out of control due to the threat the gunman posed to firefighters.

The home is situated on a lifestyle block and surrounded by farmland and dense bush.

Leah Cameron, who has known Patterson for seven years, told One News he had a history of depression and despite taking medication nothing had worked.

She said he could be confrontational and was worried he was going to be evicted.

Quinn Patterson, the man believed to be responsible for shooting Wendy Campbell and daughter Natanya in Whangarei on Wednesday.

Cameron shared a final text she received from Patterson which included: “Looking over my life I see everything I love torn from me. This life is just a continuous strug-

gle without end or point and I’m done with it.

“Each day I wake up and I realise to my dismay that I’m still here,” she told One News.

Northland gunman’s Beggars make $120 ‘on a good day’ criminal past

Gordon Robinson doesn’t beg aggressively. He just leaves an empty soft drink cup next to his folded legs.

But on a good day that cup can scoop up to $120. The money is vital to Robinson who said he doesn’t collect a benefit due to his lack of ID. The Gisborne-born man has been on the streets for six years.

After he was trespassed from Queen Street for carrying a Stanley knife, which he said he uses to butter bread and cut chicken, he’s moved up a side road.

But Robinson might not be there for too much longer if CBD retailers get their way.

Following aggressive behaviour of the city’s homeless and sketchy use of synthetic cannabis Heart of the City is renewing its push to rid the CBD of beggars.

It wants increased police presence, stricter amendments to the Public Nuisance Bylaw and stating it would amp up CityWatch – a team responsible for managing anti-social behaviour.

Eight people have died so far this month from synthetic cannabis, the latest a 24-year-old man who died this week after becoming seriously ill from smoking the drug.

A drug counsellor says the effects of synthetic cannabis can be worse than meth, with users kept up for days and sometimes being driven into psychosis.

Robinson is a regular synthetic cannabis user. He admitted that

Even if the ban was enforced Robinson didn’t think the beggars would listen because you

can make good coin around the CBD. Out of the 300 businesses that responded to a Heart of the City survey on begging, 93 per cent wanted more done to prevent it.

Avondale was one of the first to bring down the heavy hand on beggars. Three months ago it put up “begging is banned” notices after some shops were close to closure with beggars allegedly ruining business.

Now their streets are empty, Avondale Business Association chairman Duncan MacDonald said.

The Northland man who shot three people had served time for stabbing a police officer 33 years ago.

In an exclusive interview, the former constable said the 1983 attack scarred him for life and ended his police career.

Rotorua man Bruce Howat, 64, told the Herald that news of yesterday’s shooting resurfaced painful memories.

Quinn Lorne Patterson, aged in his early 50s, had been living in the remote Northland home near Whangarei, up a 200m driveway, when he shot and killed property inspectors Wendy and Natanya Campbell.

He shot contractor Jeff Pipe, who was with them but he managed to escape.

Patterson ran a property maintenance business from the house.

The three reviews on a website for New Zealand businesses were positive.

Locals described him as a little unusual but friendly enough but he was very protective of his home, had – and used – guns and didn’t like to let people inside.

And few locals knew of his criminal past, committed while aged in his 20s.

The Herald understands Patterson moved to New Zealand from Canada in his late teens with his parents and siblings and the family lived in Coromandel.

On June 20, 1983, when Patterson was 21, he was at a bar on Victoria Street in central Hamilton with his brother and was seen by

a staffer with a 13-inch hunting knife, according to a transcript from court proceedings, Howat said.

Howat was a 31-year-old police dog handler with two children who was living in Te Awamutu but working in Hamilton.

He stopped to speak to Patterson on a central city street because he “didn’t look like he was up to much good”. Patterson ran off, Howat gave chase and he was “stabbed under a tree”.

Howart described him as “a little runt” who wore glasses.

“He was so small that after he stabbed me, I picked him up by the belt with one hand and tried to carry him back to the police station.”

His left arm was slashed and he suffered severe nerve damage. He spent four days in intensive care and a further two weeks in a ward.

Howat said there had been “four or five” mistrials with Patterson before he was finally convicted in 1984 and sentenced to 18 months for grievous bodily harm.

Howat said Patterson left the country after he got out of jail on parole.

Howart’s arm is still scarred and he is unable to pick anything up for longer than a few seconds.

He never returned to the police force.

“It has certainly woken up ghosts of past, you think you are 100 per cent over something and then this happens,” Howart said.

New Zealander shot, killed in Philippines

MPI tracking ‘risk goods’ from farm Investigations are continuing in response to the detection of the new-to-New Zealand cattle disease mycoplasma bovis on a farm in South Canterbury.

The situation remains that the bacterial disease has been confirmed on one property, says the Ministry for Primary Industries, which has the affected property under legal controls restricting the movement of risk goods such as stock and equipment off the farm.

Ministry Director Response, Geoff Gwyn, said MPI was satisfied that the controls contained the disease and managed the risk as it was currently understood.

“Right now our strategy is to contain the disease and determine the size of the problem through surveillance and testing.

Once we have defined the prob-

lem, we can then look at management options which could include area movement controls, selective culling of some stock or long term management measures.

“These decisions have not been made and won’t be until we can make a fully informed judgement.”

MPI is not naming the actual property or farmer involved.

“We are legally obliged to maintain the privacy of the farmer concerned, unless there is a biosecurity need to do otherwise and this is not necessary right now.

“We are actively tracing all risk materials on and off the affected property over the past six months and contacting anyone who may need to be aware of the situation.

People who may have received potential risk goods from the af-

fected farm will be contacted urgently by us. This is what MPI does in an animal disease situation.”

MPI has established an office in Oamaru to base its field staff. Currently Ministry veterinarians are working with local vets to assess stock and manage the situation.

All farmers are encouraged to undertake their standard animal health practices, including talking to their vet if they see signs of ill health in stock. This is particularly important if farmers find animals with mastitis that does not respond to treatment, arthritis, pneumonia and late-term abortion.

Mycoplasma bovis does not infect humans and presents no food safety risk. There is no concern about consuming milk and milk products.

Fire claims women’s possessions Two Waikato women have lost all their possessions in a fire which destroyed their makeshift accommodation.

Waikato specialist fire investigator Kevin Holmes said there were only charred remains left of the large 30m x 15m building on McGowan Avenue, Kerepehi.

The building, which sat behind the Murphy Bus depot, had been “completely demolished”.

“There was a couple of people living in one end. It had been converted into a living area and the rest was used as storage and it’s been completely destroyed.”

Those who first spied the fire noticed the flames were coming from the end that was being lived

in, he said. The building also sits next to Kerepehi School which was fortunate to have the right wind direction.

It’s unclear what caused the fire and Holmes was to begin his investigations yesterday afternoon.

The occupants had no insurance and are still trying to find their cats. The blaze went to a second alarm, which meant more firefighters were called in from Turua to help Ngatea fight the 11.15am blaze.

Principal Moana Te Moananui said all the children were evacuated onto the lawn as a precaution.

“We were fine. It’s right next

door, there’s a wooden fence that separates us. The kids just went through a fire drill and all the kids were on the back field.

“Fortunately the smoke was blowing away from the school, so the kids are fine, the classrooms are fine.”

However, it was quite an eyeopener for the pupils to see how the firefighters worked.

“The kids go ‘wow, this is the first time the alarm’s gone off and it’s for a real fire’. They watched in amazement about how the fire brigade worked, and they were well out of danger.”

The kids went back to class after about an hour.

A New Zealander has been shot dead during a robbery at a market in the Philippines.

Simon Rawlinson, 63, was killed by a man on the back of a motorcycle in the town of Naval on Biliran island, police say.

The assailants took his bag, a laptop and documents.

Rawlinson, a long-time resident of nearby Maripipi island, was in Naval for a trip to the market when attacked on Wednesday morning.

The suspected gunman, a local farmer, has been arrested, senior police officer Jimmy De Lima said.

A witness led police to the man’s house, De Lima said, where they found a pistol, bullets and clothes the suspect was seen wearing on CCTV footage.

The motorcycle driver is still at large.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade has confirmed the New Zealand Embassy in Manila is in contact with Philippines authorities over the shooting.

“Due to privacy considera-

tions we are unable to provide any further information,” a spokesperson said.

A friend of Rawlinson’s said she and her partner had been left devastated by the killing.

Celia wrote on the Philippines Lifestyle News Rawlinson was seeking to lead a peaceful life on his block and loved his adopted country.

“My partner and I were friends of Simon and are devastated by this murder.

“He loved the Philippines and felt that he was at home there despite being a New Zealand citizen.”

It’s the third killing of a foreigner on the island by gunmen riding on motorcycles in the space of 12 months.

Last June a 74-year-old Dutch businessman was shot by a pillion passenger. His 11-year-old son was wounded but survived.

In March a former US marine was killed by motorcycle riding gunmen.

Those killed in previous deaths were driving their own vehicles when they were targeted.

Mayor Goff steps in over stalled World War One memorial A World War One memorial at Auckland Domain has been handed to a new body to see if it can be designed, funded and completed in time for the 100th anniversary of the Great War’s end.

This follows a political stoush that culminated with Mayor Phil Goff using his powers to relieve command of the project from councillor Mike Lee. Goff told yesterday’s governing body meeting he was setting out to get the project back on track, but acknowledged it remained a challenge.

Lee, who chairs the Auckland Domain committee, which oversaw the project up until yesterday, said “this is not a happy occasion for me”.

“I’m over all the insults, and it is personal,” Lee said.

“This is about the Auckland War Memorial Museum. It’s about the Domain. It’s about the people of Auckland,” said Lee, saying the memorial covered a huge area of 704sq m and would cause major disturbance to an ethnological and geological site of major importance.

Goff said there was nothing personal about him taking the project off the Auckland Domain committee, “but the reason I reluctantly intervened is we had no design for the memorial, no designer and had lost the opportunity to raise funding

to complete the project”.

The memorial is budgeted to cost $3 million, of which the council has $1.4m available.

In early 2016, the governing body selected the Wraight Athfield design, Te Takuaki – The Hearth, for the memorial to the people who remained at home and lost loved ones in the Great War. The goal is to complete it for the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One in November next year.

The Domain committee was given delegation to oversee the project, but relations soured over design issues with Wraight Athfield, who walked off the job two months ago.

After a lengthy debate, the governing body voted 14-5 to revoke any and all previous decisions of the Domain committee and hand over the project to a mayoral advisory group to make recommendations to the governing body.

An amendment to put Lee on the mayoral advisory group was defeated.

Goff said when he asked Wraight Athfield why they walked away, they told him it was because of irreconcilable differences with Lee and could not carry on working with him.

“I want a fresh start,” said the mayor.

Horror at state fair One person has been killed and another five are fighting for their lives after a ride malfunction at the Ohio State Fair.

The 18-year-old man who was killed slammed to the ground after part of the ride ‘snapped off’, and died on impact.

A sixth and seventh person were also injured, but they are said to be in a stable condition, according to Daily Mail.

The accident took place on the Fire Ball ride shortly before 7.30pm.

Three of the injured were taken to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center, while the other four were rushed to Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center, the Columbus Dispatch reports.

The ride combines a swinging and spinning motion, flinging people back and forth through the air and around in circles.

One of the people treated at the scene was a child under the age of 13.

Video posted online shows people being thrown from the ride after a bench snapped off at the bottom of a swing.

Columbus Fire Battalion Chief Steve Martin confirmed the injuries and the death, WCMH reports.

Yesterday was the opening night of the fair, which is scheduled to run until August 6.

The fair confirmed something had been reported, tweeting: “There has been a report of a ride incident. We are investigating and will report information as available.”

The incident comes after ride inspectors from the Ohio Department of Agriculture were forced to work long hours this week to make sure everything at the state fair was up to standard, due to delays caused by heavy rain in recent days,

the Columbus Dispatch reports.

“The rain slowed us down a little bit.

“Usually a lot of this stuff would be up a lot faster,” Ron Dean, an amusement ride inspector who has been with the Ohio Department of Agriculture for 13 years, told The Dispatch.

Grim decision coming up for parents The family of a 3-year-old girl flown to Perth after almost drowning in a Bali pool is facing the agonising decision of what to do next following her failure to respond to treatment.

A spokeswoman for the family of Kawa Sweeney told the Seven Network the toddler has been unresponsive to a series of tests run by staff at Perth’s Princess Margaret Hospital.

The little girl has been in an induced coma since she was found unconscious in a pool on the popular Indonesian tourist island on Sunday morning.

It reportedly took almost two hours before she received any further medical treatment because the first hospital she was sent to did not have sufficient equipment to cater for for children.

A GoFundMe campaign was

set up on her behalf, asking for donations to cover $42,000 for a Medivac flight to Perth and $18,000 to help with the medical bills, with the online campaign exceeding the goal of $60,000, raising $74,775 by Monday afternoon.

Kawa and her parents left Denpasar airport on a chartered flight to Perth on Monday.

Kawa’s father Desmond Sweeney has shared a photograph of the toddler at the family’s favourite Newport Beach in Sydney’s north to his Instagram page, thanking people for their support.

“So much love for our little girl,” he wrote.

“We are overwhelmed by your prayers, thoughts and well wishes.

“They are getting us through this difficult time.”

Working with cars a life-long dream Growing up there was nothing else Malcolm Lovett wanted to do than work with cars.

He lived for engines, tinkering with them around the family farm and his career pathway was well decided before he was even of the right age to be considering what he was going to do with his life.

“There wasn’t much option really,” he said.

“It was cars, cars and more cars.”

He began as a mechanic and that set the ball in motion for what has become a long and fruitful career within the industry – and one that continues to develop further and further as time goes on.

In 1997 he, along with wife Cindy, decided to throw caution to the wind and Malcolm Lovett Automotive was born.

Initially based on South Street, they had a stint at a Wills Street property before moving into their current location on the corner of Havelock and Cass streets.

It’s been a slowly evolving beast from there too.

After six years of leasing the property, they bought it outright and have continued to add and alter the site as the years have gone by.

A new upstairs staff room and two separate storage offices for extra product and paperwork have helped to optimise the space

and the recent addition of the Honda workshop and showroom earlier this year has allowed for even further development.

“You have to keep going, and keep changing as things happen,” Cindy said.

Considerable strengthening

work was done to the building following the earthquakes.

No serious damage was done in the disaster, but to bring it up to code work had to be undertaken and without the luxury of insurance to cover the work, the money had to come from the business.

“It meant we had to look to further things even more,” Malcolm said.

“And that’s half the reason we decided to go with the addition of Honda to our service, it just opened up a new customer base.”

There’s a real family feel to the air within the building with the pair’s three children regular sights in and around the property and Malcolm’s father, John an everpresent feature at the workshop.

“He comes in and sweeps the floors and will take cars down to get a warrant of fitness.

“He will ring up most mornings and ask what needs to be done.”

Both marques an ideal mix In February this year, Malcolm Lovett Automotive welcomed a new aspect to its business with the inclusion of Honda to its services.

They purchased the existing business from Paul May when he retired from the Honda side of the business, and are well and truly under way with the new service becoming a large part of their everyday life.

When making the decision to make the addition, both Malcolm and Cindy were fully aware of what it would entail and the challenge it would create, but they took an open-minded approach and have enjoyed every minute of it so far.

“It was something new for us,” Malcolm said.

“All of a sudden here we are having to learn and upskill on a whole new set of things that we probably hadn’t encountered a lot in the past.

“It’s like anything though, the first time you do it is the most difficult then it’s usually easier from thereon.”

Malcolm said the decision fitted in perfect with the existing business due to its location and suitability.

“It is a great brand and it fits

in really well with the Mistubishi side of things.

“So, it was actually quite an easy decision for us to make at the end of the day.”

Cindy said Malcolm had taken a lot of that learning and adapting responsibility on his own

shoulders – both as a desire to get the best results from the outset and to give himself the chance to learn while he went.

“He just dove into it head on and hasn’t really looked up,” she said.

“I think he’s really enjoyed

being able to learn and teach himself new skills around the little things that are different from what we are used to doing with the Mitsubishi side of things.”

They are offering all the same services with the Honda side of

the business as they do with the Mitsubishi side currently and the hope was that in time as things continued to grow that the pair would end up being a natural combination and work well for those within the Ashburton district.

The Ultimate Cosworth

O

ne of the most iconic performance cars of the 1980s is celebrating its 30th anniversary in style, having been named the ‘Ultimate Cosworth’ by one of the UK’s biggest one-make car shows.

The Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth pipped its spiritual successor, the Escort RS Cosworth, to the post, securing over 55 per cent of the votes in an online survey carried out by Ford Fair to determine which of the two icons was the daddy.

The Escort also has a major anniversary in 2017, celebrating its 25th birthday.

A special display celebrating both of these famous fast Fords will be one of the main features of this year’s show, which takes place at Silverstone on Sunday August 6.

The RS500 was originally developed for homologation purposes to give the Eighties’ favourite repmobile, the humble Ford Sierra, a chance to compete in World, European and British Touring Car Championships.

It was famous in the UK, where it performed in the British Touring Car Championship in the hands of drivers such as Andy Rouse, Steve Soper and Tim Harvey. It also competed in the 1988 World Touring Car Championship and enjoyed success in Australia, too, in the hands of legendary Touring Car driver Dick Johnson.

Just 500 RS500 road cars were made, 75

per cent of which were finished in black, the rest in either white or Ford’s distinctive Moonstone Blue.

They were finished by Aston Martin Tickford, with a bigger turbo, while the main external identifier was its outrageous ‘whale tail’ spoiler – a far cry from the average showroom Sierra.

In addition to the Cosworth anniversary feature, there are some other birthday’s being commemorated in special display

areas. These include 15 years of the Mk1 Focus RS, 15 years of the Mondeo ST220 and 15 years of the Focus ST170 – yes, 2002 was a great year for fans of fast Fords.

Ford Fair will also have over 4000 club cars on display, including many other classic and modern Fords, plus a special selection of cars from Ford itself, including the all-new Fiesta.

Other star features will include The Live Action Arena, which will once again be at

the centre of the show, a live performance from stunt driver Paul Swift, bookable track time for show visitors and a dedicated Classic Zone, which will play host to all manner of historic heroes from Anglia to Zodiac.

Vintage yarns T

wo weeks ago our column about Les Nell and his family which was itself the result of one story, well actually more than one, leading to another ended with a prediction.

Prediction v tell about in advance, or a prophesy.

In this case the prediction was the story would lead to another.

Correct, it did, but not the one we were prophesising.

One of our readers, Jocelyn Hosken, was in touch within 24 hours of publication to say she remembered an amusing incident involving Les Nell and his fire engine.

For Jocelyn the story rekindled memories of the local Vintage Car Club’s 3rd Annual Rally, held on an extremely hot day in late January 1971.

The Nell’s took part in their Leyland Fire Engine.

In total there were 152 vehicles on the rally, which headed for a lunch stop in Mayfield.

A fire was noticed in a paddock and Les, who always drives the fire engine with water in the tank, was able to stop and extinguish it.

It was probably one of the more unusual things to happen on a rally and one of many fascinating tales Jocelyn can relate about that day in particular and other events too.

Once they got to Mayfield many participants were keen for a swim.

One in particular, Graham Stevens, living up to his reputation as one of life’s delightful characters, declared it was too hot to wait and he dived into the pool fully clothed.

Ironically Graham’s wife Bev would go on to become a lifeguard.

The pool wasn’t the only popular place in town, so was the local tavern!

It was so hot some people were fainting because of the heat, so when Jocelyn, who was tail end Charlie on the rally, arrived her late husband Ray who had gone ahead was waiting for her and said you better come to the tavern and have a drink.

Good idea, but Jocelyn said it was a matter of climbing over a lot of bodies, not as result of people getting too hydrated but because it was cooler to stay at ground level.

It was a great day for Mine Host, but at one stage there was concern the tavern may be drunk dry and some who saw the funny side began singing the Australian classic “The pub with no beer”, suggesting it could become the theme song for the day.

Jocelyn says back in those days the annual rally was preceded by a display of cars the previous evening, made possible because of the generosity of the late Bruce Smallbone who made space available in his garage.

Coinciding with Friday late night shopping, the display was always popular and the small admission charge was a helpful fund raiser for the club, which was in its infancy.

The Ashburton Branch of the Vintage Car Club started as a Canterbury Sub Branch.

Full branch status, which was subject to a membership of 30, was achieved in 1969.

Jocelyn says until she saw some lovely old cars on the some rallies including the 1965 International Rally she wasn’t really all that interested in cars, just thinking “a car is a car”.

But it all changed when she and Ray followed the International Rally around the McKenzie Country before it stopped in Ashburton.

It had to be an American convertible.

They found what they were looking – a 1927 Buick – in Harry Ellery’s shed in Oamaru.

After a bit of persuasion the Buick burst into life and the family drove it home during Labour Weekend 1965.

Their son and daughter wanted to travel home in the Buick with their dad while she drove the family car. The car was in need of restoration and Jocelyn still remembers a sympatric traffic officer in Winchester turning his head the other way as Ray and the children drove past!

It was long while before the Hoskens let on they paid £80 for the Buick.

Back home Ray immediately began a ground-up nuts and bolts restoration and incredibly the family were able to drive the car into town on Christmas Eve with everything but the upholstery finished.

Two days later on Boxing Day they drove it to Christchurch to deliver Ray’s application for Vintage Car Club membership.

Ray was soon actively involved and after one annual meeting arrived home to

tell Jocelyn the club had elected a new secretary, following the retirement of early stalwart the late John Morrison.

Jocelyn asked “Who was appointed?”

Ray replied “You”.

So Jocelyn said I better become a member too and that was the beginning of her continuous membership of almost 50 years.

Jocelyn also got her own car – a Whippet.

Close to five decades of membership has been a source of enjoyment and happy memories for Jocelyn. Looking back she recalls lots of hard work, especially fundraising, combined with great camaraderie and a lot of funny incidents.

Even though it happened over 40 years ago Jocelyn still remembers a Christmas picnic hosted by Ron and Pam Winchester.

The late Chrissie Allen, who had a delightful sense of humour, found a cow pat which she wrapped in festive paper and raffled as a mystery prize. Winner the late Ray Copland was both surprised and amused when he opened his prize.

Jocelyn still enjoys club activities and is a regular at Jim and Alison Lawton’s monthly “tucker runs”.

Being actively involved along with others including Ruth Sheppard with the Club’s Silver Anniversary, which attracted 226 vehicles, was a highlight for Jocelyn.

Knowing how much fun they all had she knows the club’s golden anniversary celebration, for which planning has begun, in 2019 will be a great occasion.

And thinking of it Jocelyn looks back with satisfaction when she thinks of what the enthusiast foundation members of the club did and what has been achieved including a membership now numbering more than 200.

A fortnight ago when we predicted that story would lead to another one, we were thinking it would be a little later down the track about the Nell’s teenage granddaughter Penny’s restoration of her Triumph.

Who could have guessed it would lead to story mentioning a vintage fire engine extinguishing a fire and people coping with the heat in various ways.

Not to mention Jocelyn’s recollections of almost 50 years of Vintage Car Club membership.

The prediction still stands and we are looking forward to fulfilling it and so is Jocelyn who thinks that as long as young people like Penny want to belong the club Jocelyn and others established has a great future.

How did the Ashburton Vintage Car Club magazine get its name?

Because her late husband Ray had a habit of doodling while speaking on the phone, Jocelyn Hosken always made sure there was a pad and pen close by. After ending one call Ray looked down to see he had drawn a car tyre which had blown out. And that inspired the name Blowout for the club’s always eagerly awaited monthly magazine.

A street-friendly thriller D ucati have launched their allnew Supersport, with the bike now filling what was a glaring gap in the Ducati lineup, but that’s not the full story ...

Ducati’s 2017 Supersport is a bike that many potential Ducati riders have been longing after for a while now.

With the Panigale range heavily track focused, and the naked Monster range a little too street oriented, there was room in the range for something with the street manners of the Monster, but could also give riders a taste of Ducati’s iconic sportsbike heritage.

Sure, it’s not going to keep pace with the Panigale on track, but with a mission to bring back the street oriented Ducati sportsbike, the Supersport (and it’s upmarket Öhlins equipped sibling the Supersport S) is than capable of giving riders who don’t want a superbike a more street friendly, yet thrilling ride.

At its heart is a Testastretta V-twin engine (or L-Twin if you are already part of the Ducatisti fanbase) pumping out a healthy 83.1kW and 96.7Nm of torque and nicely wrapped in a classic Ducati trellis frame chassis.

It doesn’t sound like a heck of a lot for a sportsbike, but as one colleague put it, any more power and you can’t use much of it without heading to your nearest racetrack, any less and you quickly find the powerplant dull.

In a nutshell, it’s a near perfect level of power for a bike that is targeted at riders who want useable, but fun power for everyday street use.

Out on the roads in New South Wales, the Supersport impressed with its incredibly rider friendly ergonomics and immensely comfortable seat. I don’t often believe people when they say a bike seat is all-day comfortable, but the 811mm high Supersport seat is one I’d wager actually could be. That’s something special in of itself for a bike that sits more in the sports side of the spectrum that touring.

With a fully faired body and adjustable windscreen (which can be pulled up for more wind protection on the fly) the gorgeous Ducati looks like everything you would want of an Italian sports bike and is likely to be one of the biggest selling factors of the Supersport. Just looking at stirs your desires.

When it came to the some twisty cornering action – the domain in which a sportsbike must perform well – getting into the swing of things was easy on the highways and byways of outer Sydney. I had started the day off on the Supersport S complete with a set of fully adjustable Öhlins 48mm forks and matching fully adjustable monoshock. The ex-factory settings were spot on and even on the rougher pot holed sections performed flawlessly.

Pulling the Supersport to a stop is a set of brilliant 320mm discs clamped by Brembo 4-piston calipers up front, with a 2-piston unit in the rear.

A

council that can learn from their mistakes and produce far better results, is a good council.

It takes a fair bit for someone to take one on the chin and walk away and say, “Okay, how can I do that better next time around, if there is a next time at all”.

A few weeks back the Ashburton District Council was copping shots from all over the district in relation to their efforts to relay the news of a boil water notice in Methven following a power cut.

Some constituents wanted blood and felt the council’s reaction to the potentially dangerous incident was poorly handled and rushed, without any real deep thought into what they were actually doing.

Luckily, there have been no reports of illness from contaminated water – but there were plenty of reports about the council in the wash-up.

Residents of Methven were furious that it was left to them to find out on social media or through word of mouth.

Where was the forward planning?

So when the heavens opened up last week and it poured, many of us wondered how the council would react. Would they jump up off their seats and spring into action? Or would they remain in the comfort of their little shell and avoid the potential threat of abuse from an angry group of residents?

It would appear, judging by last week’s deluge, that our district leaders learned their lesson.

As the water pooled last Friday, the council sprang into action getting their people into the right spots to be able to divulge and inform.

Their response was very good.

They had men on the ground almost immediately and did a grand job of communicating to the public exactly what was going on.

Boil water notices were issued and the appropriate people were informed to relay the message to the public.

So it’s kudos to the Ashburton District Council, we might not always agree with what you do and decide, but we can rest easy knowing that whatever you do, you’re not exempt from taking criticism and learning from it.

Couch potato with good intentions I

have a new obsession at the moment, well maybe obsession is a bit over the top.

I have watched several Netflix documentaries on food lately.

It all started with Joe Cross and his documentary Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead. In the doco he tells the story of his 60-day juice fast.

He was a 140kg man with an auto-immune condition, chronic urticaria, for which he had been taking medications such as the steroid prednisone for years.

He knew something had to change and got a dying-early wake-up call from his doctor.

He used an 80/20 rule, he used 80 per cent vegetables and 20 per cent fruit in the juice that he made, to avoid getting too much sugar into his system.

The first few days he struggled and felt awful, groggy and unstable, but after consuming only juice for five days, he started

feeling well both physically and mentally.

After 49 days, he lost 30kg, his total cholesterol dropped from 204 to 135 and his LDL cholesterol went from 132 to 86. By day 61, Cross lost nearly 40kg and decreased his medicine dosage after reporting a complete loss of his urticaria symptoms.

Cross does not recommend the diet as a long-term solution and only recommends it as a reboot for the body.

He travels across America as he’s filming his doco and looks at their food culture, he meets

a morbidly obese truck driver on his travels, who agrees to try the juice fast and completely changes his life for the better. It is a captivating watch.

Cross is the founder and CEO of Reboot with Joe, a health and lifestyle brand. Following the release of his documentary, Cross has published six books about juicing.

In February, 2014, Cross released his book titled The Reboot with Joe Juice Diet: Lose Weight, Get Healthy and Feel Amazing that became a New York Times bestseller.

Food Inc, Forks Over Knives, Fed Up etc etc all have a similar message – eat real food not processed, shop around the outside of the supermarket and eat mainly fruit and veges.

One of the docos made a point that hit home with me.

You can imagine putting all the fruits, veges, nuts and seeds in a nutri-blaster but what about a

I’m not about to start preaching about becoming a vegan or anything like that, but I, for one, am going to watch the amount of food on the plate and make sure nature produced it and not a scientist.

I like Joe Cross’ theory that diets don’t work long-term but a reboot for the body every now and again can’t be a bad thing.

Now to get my butt off the couch and away from these documentaries and put some of these theories in play. Well, maybe tomorrow, it’s fish and chips Friday eh?

Govt rules out petrol, diesel ban The Government will not follow the UK and France’s lead in banning new petrol and diesel cars from 2040, opting instead to incentivise the switch to electric vehicles, Transport Minister Simon Bridges says.

The initiative was launched in the UK yesterday after High Court judges ruled the Government was breaking the law by allowing concentrations of nitrogen dioxide to build up in urban areas.

From 2040, drivers will be able to buy electric vehicles only – ending the near 150-year reign of the internal combustion engine.

From around 2020, town halls will also be allowed to levy extra charges on diesel drivers using the UK’s 81 most polluted routes if air quality fails to improve.

Diesels might even be banned at peak times.

A similar scheme was introduced in France earlier this month as the country seeks to meet its targets under the Paris climate accord.

The New Zealand Government has opted for a different tack, with Bridges saying in a statement it did not believe in measures like banning combustion cars, but instead opted for “encouraging growth [in the number of electric vehicles] using a range of incentives to grow demand”.

“The Government has an ambitious electric vehicle programme with the aim to double the size of the electric vehicle fleet in New Zealand every year to reach 64,000 electric vehicles by 2021,” the minister said.

“The Government has a number of initiatives to help encourage people to make the switch, one being the exemption of electric vehicle owners paying road user charges, saving them around $600 a year.”

Bridges added that electric vehicles were the future and a move from petrol and diesel to low-emission transport was “a natural evolution”.

“It’s our aim to encourage that switch sooner, rather than later.”

he global quarterly reporting season has given us plenty to monitor over the past week, with a number of large corporates reporting earnings for the second quarter of 2017.

There has been a number of corporate events locally as well, with numerous AGMs on the NZ corporate calendar. Add to this a number of important economic events and a Federal Reserve meeting and we can see there has been plenty for investors to process.

The most watched event of the week was without a doubt the US Federal Reserve’s two-day July meeting. Although this meeting would not result in a change to forecasts, nor would it result in a change to rates, the commentary was going to be watched for clues on the central bank’s path.

As expected the Fed funds rate range remained on hold after being raised by 0.25 per cent last month to 1.00 – 1.25 per cent.

The commentary was positive albeit cautious as the committee continues to see economic activity rising, however inflation remains subdued and this is of concern. The committee expects to begin implementing its balance sheet normalisation programme soon.

The overall cautious tone of the commentary has seen expectations of another rate hike this year fall again. At the last meeting the Fed reiterated that it still anticipates a further rise in rates later this year.

The market has grown increasingly cynical of this and prior to this meeting was pricing in around a 50 per cent chance of a

hike by the end of the year. This has been pared back further following this meeting, with most economists anticipating that rates will remain on hold until at least March in 2018.

The corporate reporting season continues this week and has been largely positive. For the S&P500, of the 197 companies that have reported 77 per cent have reported earnings growth while 75 per cent have beaten revenue estimates. This has translated into some solid gains on the share market, pushing all three of the main indexes in the US to record highs.

One of the standout performers for the week has been The Boeing Company after it beat expectations for both earnings and revenue. The company also raised guidance for its full year.

The positive outlook was certainly cheered by investors and the share price rose almost 10 per cent in the following trading session.

Other notable wins include McDonald’s, which also beat expectations and provided a positive outlook for the remainder of the year. McDonald’s was also suitably rewarded with a substantial leap in its share price for the day.

It has been busy on the corporate front in New Zealand with

a large number of companies holding AGMs during the week.

We have had a few companies reporting results as well, however the local reporting season will really get under way next week. TrustPower held its AGM this week and upgraded full year guidance as trading conditions remain strong and customer numbers have continued to increase.

Retirement village operator Ryman Healthcare held its AGM this week and said that trading is in line with expectations, however it expects to report limited growth in the first half of 2018 as development earnings are weighted to the second half of the year.

The company gave an update on a number of developments with Brandon Park, its second Melbourne village, seeing strong early demand.

In other news on the local front, Fonterra increased the forecast payout for the 2017/18 year by 25 cents per kilogram of milksolids to $6.75. The company said that this was reflective of the ongoing rebalance of supply and demand in global dairy markets.

Next week, we will be continuing to watch the global reporting season as it continues to push global share markets higher. The local reporting season will really ramp up next week also, while second quarter unemployment will be the headline grabber.

Cup swansong for top mare Gary McBeth is leaving no page unturned in his search for the perfect match for his pride and joy.

The Taranaki horseman’s fine ride with Katie McKeen is coming to an end and she will make her final appearance for the New Plymouth breeder, owner and trainer in the Listed Taumarunui Gold Cup at Arawa Park on Saturday.

“It’s her last race and my wife asked me where the mare will go – she said I must know every stallion in the Stud Book by now,” McBeth said.

“I’ve got it down to three or four.

“I’ll make a decision soon.”

Katie McKeen has put together a tidy record with the smart strike rate of 10 wins from 55 starts, including a runaway success over 2000m at New Plymouth last weekend.

“She got home on Sunday night and licked the bowl clean, she came through the run really well,” McBeth said.

“She was pulling her head off on Wednesday morning.

“It will be interesting on Saturday as there are two or three others in the field that go forward so we’ll see what happens on the day.”

Dunn unstoppable The man set to break every driving record in New Zealand harness racing history, realises he will have to wait at least another year for the most lucrative one. Dexter Dunn’s record-breaking season is over early after he jetted off this week for a brief US holiday, before defending his World Drivers title in Canada early next month. Dunn, who will take in the historic Hambletonian Day at the Meadowlands early next month, finishes this season with 228 wins, eight clear of the previous New Zealand record by a horseperson of either code, which Dunn set in 2011.

Stud career looming Gypsy Fair is racing on borrowed time and she has an opportunity to advance her record at Otaki tomorrow. The winner of seven races including the Merial Metric Mile, she will step out in the Ekraar at Linwood Park Stud Handicap. “She was a bit disappointing last start so we’ve put the blinkers on,” Taranaki trainer Allan Sharrock said.

“She’s probably a run or two away from going to stud.” Sharrock will also be represented by Darci Mac. “He’s got to be a chance. He was caught wide last start and the inside three horses were the first three home,” he said.

Kate Louise ready to take big step up Buoyed by another breath-taking feature jumps win from Sea King in Australia last weekend, Rachael Frost is turning her focus to domestic stakes success at her home track at Otaki tomorrow.

Frost shares ownership of the Patrick Payne-trained Sea King, a resounding winner of last Sunday’s Brendan Dreschler Hurdle at Ballarat, and prepares promising Swiss Ace filly Kate Louise, a contender for the Listed Courtesy Ford Ryder Stakes (1200m) for two-year-olds.

In three starts, Kate Louise has twice finished second and in between was sixth in the Listed Castletown Stakes (1200m) at Wanganui after getting too far back in the running.

She closed well for second at Hastings last start over 800m, beaten a length and a quarter, an effort that convinced Frost she was worthy of a start in the Ryder Stakes.

“If it was another 200m the other day, she would have been a hell of a lot closer.

“I’m not saying she would have beaten the winner, but she was hitting the line strongly,” Frost said.

“This is a big step up, but even if she could finish third or fourth it’s black-type which makes her more valuable as a broodmare later on. She handles it wet so

that might just be her edge.”

Frost has had to be patient with Kate Louise, who has her quirks leading up to raceday.

“She gets quite anxious before raceday.

“She knows what’s coming and she won’t eat before her races.

“She starts pacing and gets fidgety,” Frost said.

“She’s a lot better than she was

and hopefully with the quicker backup between races, she won’t think she’s got a race coming up.

“It’s funny though because she’s a different horse at the racecourse. Once she’s there, she goes to sleep.”

Frost will also produce Redefine at Otaki, the Captain Rio three-year-old gelding chasing a fourth straight win in the Gra-

ham Sheldon Smellie Memorial (1200m).

“I’m not that keen on running on a heavy 11, but it could be a means to an end because there’s a race for him at Te Rapa the following week.

“He could run in the 85 1400m there if he wins or the 75 1600m if he gets beaten,” Frost said.

Meanwhile, the Grand National Hurdle (3900m) at Sandown on Saturday week looks the likely next target for Sea King, who continued to etch his name among the greats of jumping with his Dreschler Hurdle win at Bendigo.

He was denied a run in connections’ preferred option – the Mosstrooper Steeplechase – because he had not trialled over bigger fences in Australia this season but it made no difference.

“He’s pretty good isn’t he?”

Frost quipped.

“It was pretty impressive, considering it was a hurdle and they do go quite a bit quicker.

“They ran six seconds quicker than the steeplechasers. He won well and never really looked in trouble.”

Frost said the Crisp Steeplechase at Sandown the same day as the Grand National Hurdle was the preferred option for Sea King, but there were no trials scheduled before that race which would force their hand. - NZME

A setback has disrupted the spring preparation of the stakes performer Aquilo. “He’s been held up by a hoof issue which has taken a while to come right,” said Jamie Richards, who trains with Stephen Autridge. “He’s doing some work on the treadmill, but he won’t be ready for Hawke’s Bay.” Aquilo was a winner at Rotorua in April before he finished third in the Listed Waikato Equine Veterinary Centre Stakes.

Tried and true for semi

BY PATRICK MCKENDRY It is likely to be a case same players, same approach for the Crusaders in their semi-final against the Chiefs on Saturday, with Scott Robertson sticking with the 23 who beat the Highlanders last weekend and the Christchurch weather expected to be just as formidable.

“The wetter the better,” Crusaders coach Robertson said yesterday after his side trained in the wet and cold at their Rugby Park headquarters.

“Embrace it and enjoy it,” he added.

“Tactically we were good last week.

“That gave us a lot of belief.

We’ve had a look at how we can be better – making a few slight adjustments depending on what the Chiefs throw at us.”

The heavy and cold conditions expected for kick-off – the overnight temperature for Saturday has been forecast at – 3 – could make life difficult for a Chiefs team who will likely want to use the ball more than the Crusaders.

Both sides will employ a kicking and rush defence strategy and while the Chiefs’ scrum performed well in the team’s quarter-final victory over the Stormers in Cape Town, the Crusaders will hope for gains here too.

The Crusaders were more accurate than the Highlanders in the constant rain last weekend and that quarter-final victory will likely be the blueprint again for Robertson.

An insight into Robertson’s thinking has been the selection of former Blues halfback Bryn Hall at halfback.

Hall’s kicking game was far better than that of All Black Aaron Smith’s last weekend and so he gets the chance to start again to fulfil what is likely to be a similar role ahead of close rival Mitchell Drummond.

“They’ve got some great athletes and individuals who make a lot of line breaks,” Robertson said of the Chiefs. “They’ve got a good tactical game.

“The New Zealand teams this season have probably ramped up their defence in general – they’ve been much more aggressive.

“We’ve changed the way we’ve defended as well.

“We understand it’s hard to play against it if you get it right.”

Moore to retire Wallabies skipper Stephen Moore will retire from international rugby at the end of the year and is handing over the captaincy to Michael Hooper effective immediately. Moore told his teammates late on Wednesday of his decision to step aside despite only last month declaring his intention to play on until the 2019 World Cup. The 34-year-old hooker will play one more season with the Reds next year before hanging up his boots for good.

Emphatic win for College The Ashburton College senior girls’ basketball team hosted Burnside High School for a catch-up round of their Whelan Trophy competition on Tuesday night at the BBMC stadium.

Both teams were off the mark quickly, pushing the ball up the court at pace whenever possible.

Forwards Sophie Adams and Ashlee Strawbridge ran the lanes well, with Strawbridge picking up 10 first quarter points to put College up 19-11 at the end of the first quarter.

College’s field goal percentage continued to climb in the second quarter on the back of some solid defensive pressure from guard Liberty Ross.

Ross was able to force a number of turnovers, giving College more offensive looks and a 43-24 lead at the half.

Burnside started the second half determined to reduce the margin, with guard Sila Morris knocking in three early buckets from beyond the arc.

College’s response came in the form of recently returned U16 New Zealand rep Sophie Adams, who had a dominant third quarter in the paint racking up 14 points, carrying College to a 61-38 lead heading into the final quarter.

College guards Sammy Arnold and Sophie Adams kept pushing the ball in the fourth quarter, allowing the home team to run in 22 points to Burnside’s four, giving the College girls a comfortable 83-42 win.

Ashlee Strawbridge and Sophie Adams knocked in 20 points each for College, while Liberty Ross claimed 14.

Burnside’s U18 New Zealand rep, Tsubasa Nisbet had 15 points.

Both College teams play at the BBMC Stadium on Oxford Street next Tuesday.

Kicking off at 5.15pm, the girls take on Rangiora, followed shortly after by the boys against St. Bede’s.

The Warriors are expected to join players from all NRL clubs in a unified show of support for the Rugby League Players’ Association, in tonight’s clash against Cronulla at Mt Smart Stadium. Reports out of Australia indicate the protracted pay war between the RLPA and the game’s governing body is set to enter the playing field for the first time across all of this week’s round 21 matches.

Warriors players yesterday fronted the media wearing RLPA branded caps but gave no indication of their intentions to take part in the planned protest.

Enhancing players’ performances H

ave you ever been afraid to do something because you know it could be a lot worse than you expect?

I can’t help but feel the powers that be at Drug Free Sport NZ have been thinking that for quite a while.

They recently announced they would be introducing drug testing at the national School Rugby Tournament later in the year.

It is a decision that makes complete and utter sense.

These schoolboy teams are the highest level for youth rugby, with the nation’s professional teams picking their development teams from these squads.

Substantial scholarships are offered to those considered to be elite by the elite schools (the ones in Christchurch are easily guessed), and big derbies like Christchurch Boys’ v Christ’s College draw the entire school in to watch.

Former All Blacks are coaching sides, with everything being done to mould them into future rugby stars.

So the idea that they may feel pressured in to taking performance enhancing substances makes a lot of sense, especially when you look at the results from a survey of players.

The survey showed “concerning” attitudes towards the use of supplements in school rugby and some players even admitted to taking performance-enhancing substances.

Drug Free Sport doesn’t intend to come down harshly on any players they find to be taking banned substances, initially treating it as a way to educate the young players, and to protect them.

If there are already players taking these

substances, why has nothing already been done to stop them?

Surely all parts of the game needed to move up together for it to become as big as it has, and that must include player welfare.

Hopefully we won’t see Drug Free Sport digging up something far larger than they expected, but you never know.

One thing you would hope is that our local Mid Canterbury boys are as clean as a whistle.

Having spoken with the coaches and watching the players play, these are boys, that despite rubbing shoulders with these big name schools and players, are not ones that feel under pressure.

It is clear to see they are guys that are enjoying their rugby, and play for the love of the game.

It doesn’t mean they don’t believe they cannot succeed, just that they can do it without any dodgy help.

This is a great time to give these boys a bit of a plug, and I can’t help but recommend making the trip out to Mayfield to see them take on Burnside this Saturday at noon.

It is a game this exciting young side can win and they are well worth a watch.

■ CRICKET

Black Caps on back foot New Zealand cricketers might be capable of competing with Australia, England and India on the field, but their playing rivals trounce them in the earnings stakes.

The Australian stoush between the governing body and their cricketers’ association continues, but their international players will dwarf the Black Caps for take home pay, if or when a new deal is brokered.

However, news.com.au has revealed England’s internationals are the best paid for retainers, according to the most recent analysis by the Federation of International Cricketers Associations (FICA).

Skipper Joe Root and his national colleagues, ranked fourth in both tests and ODIs, were listed as collecting an average $1.14 million, based on their retainer with the England and Wales cricket board plus match payments for tests, one-dayers and T20 internationals.

The Australians, third on the ICC test rankings and the world’s second best oneday team, were close behind, with an average of $1.06m for similar output.

The likes of captain Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner make considerably more under Cricket Australia’s tiered system which gives greater rewards to the top ranked players among the 20 contract holders.

Broncos re-sign Roberts Brisbane have re-signed star centre James Roberts until the end of the 2021 NRL season. Roberts, who has signed four-year contract extension, was thrown a lifeline by the Broncos at the end of the 2015 season after stints with three clubs over four years. The 24-year-old speedster scored nine tries in 25 games in his first year at Red Hill before shining in 2017 to be the Broncos’ lead try-scorer with 13. Roberts began his career at South Sydney but was sacked for disciplinary reasons, before enduring the same fate at Penrith after six games.

World BMX domination

Former Ashburton College first XV captain Harry Ferguson has a big rugby assignment this weekend.

Kiwi junior Leila Walker has made it five straight age group BMX titles in a row at the world championships in the United States. Walker left the field in her wake to claim the girls’ 12 years crown in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The Cambridge rider added to a string world titles when she won the girls’ eight-year-old event in Auckland in 2013. She has emerged victorious at subsequent events in the Netherlands, Belgium and Colombia. Walker dominated all three of her qualifying motos, her quarter-final, semi-final and the eight-girl final.

Harry’s biggest game A big weekend of rugby looms for former Ashburton College First XV captain Harry Ferguson.

The lively flanker is hoping to take the field for his University of Canterbury club side against Lincoln University in the final of the division one Canterbury Metro Trophy on Sunday.

Ferguson, 20, has spent the past few weeks on the sideline with a haematoma but is cleared to play in the big final at Rugby Park.

He has been a regular starter at flanker for the University side this season and is hoping his good form prior to injury will

allow him to win his spot back.

University last won the trophy in 1990 and the students beat Sydenham last Sunday to set up the clash with Lincoln University. They upset Lincoln University 29-27 earlier in the competition so the scene is set for an epic final.

Ferguson first played for the Ashcoll 1st XV in 2013 as a Year 12 student; the side that year qualified for the top four co-ed national playoffs in Rotorua.

In 2014 he was captain of the side.

He says the Rotorua experience remains a highlight of his Ashburton College playing

days, along with a rare win over Christ’s College.

He joined the University Club in 2015, when he started studying towards a four-year degree in forestry engineering.

He played in the premier colts team that year, on the wing … a little quiet for a player used to being in the thick of the action.

The following year he was back at flanker and this year he has impressed the division 1 coach, after a stellar season with the University sevens side.

He has scored a couple of tries over the course of the club season – his first resulting from his first touch of the ball ever in the

division 1 competition.

University has some high profile players. Ferguson has played alongside Israel Dagg – “it was pretty fun running on with an All Black” – and was disappointed to be injured when Kieran Read took the field for them during a club match. Read has also been to some trainings and Ferguson said that his presence was huge for the team.

The team willl be watching the Crusaders v Chiefs game together on Saturday night and arriving in style on a bus to Rugby Park on Sunday.

Garcia down-under Reigning Masters champion Sergio Garcia will headline the Australian PGA Championship field in December after announcing his first trip Down Under in seven years. Yesterday, the PGA of Australia revealed the world No.5 will tee up at its flagship event on the Gold Coast for the first time in the Spaniard’s career. In April, 37year-old Garcia claimed the Masters green jacket by defeating Justin Rose in a sudden-death playoff at Augusta National – his maiden major championship title after 73 attempts.
