■ MOUNT HUTT COLLEGE
Orientation day prepares students for school year By Jaime Pitt-macKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
The Mount Hutt College campus is once again alive with the sound of chattering children. On Friday, the college welcomed Year 7 and 8 students that are new to the school for an orientation day to prepare them for the beginning of school on Monday. Year 7 and 8 dean, Rana Richards, believes the orientation day is a great way to introduce the children to the school. The younger students are buddied up with a senior Year 13 student for the day. Due to high numbers of new pupils this year, each senior student is buddied with at least two juniors, Richards said. “It gives the students someone to talk if they have a problem that isn’t a form teacher or a dean,” Richards said.
Once buddied up, the students completed worksheets together before having fun photos taken and enjoyed a barbecue lunch. In the afternoon, fun games and sports were played. Richardson said the support between the youngest and oldest students doesn’t end there. “The senior students run the big buddy committee which runs activities throughout the year such as fish and chip lunches and morning teas for the younger students,” Richardson said. ■ FIBRE-OPTIC ROLL-OUT
UFB network’s tentacles spread By Sue NewmaN
Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
Lake Hood, Methven and Rakaia will be winners when round two of the Government’s ultra fast broadband programme is rolled out. The three areas are among 153 that are included in the latest government investment in its broadband programme, with Canterbury tipped to receive a $33.5 million spend. While Rakaia is listed as first cab off the rank, with work expected to be completed by June, some areas, however, will not be connected until 2023. Ashburton was among the first of New Zealand’s towns and cit-
ies to have its fibre optic roll-out completed, but many rural areas and rural villages still do not have UFB access. Thanks to local lines company EA Networks, however, there are many rural areas that are ahead of the pack when it comes to warp speed internet. In 2008 the lines company decided to roll out its own broadband network to enable staff to service substations remotely. As part of that project the company agreed to make access to its UFB network available to properties along the network route. It also committed to providing a broadband network to all of the district’s schools.
Over the years the network has grown and EA Networks indicated it was keen to partner with the Government to be part of the national roll-out programme. To date that hadn’t happened and company general manager Gordon Guthrie said that missing out on the latest contract meant the company needed to revisit where it was at and where it was going with its own programme. “We’d have liked to do the whole network, but as much as we wanted to do this ourselves, we didn’t get an agreement with them (Government), but it’s not all bad, at least people in those areas will get broadband one way or the other and this way it’s government
funded rather than us paying for it ourselves,” he said. The company’s roll-out had provided fast internet access to some properties in Rakaia and Methven that were along the roll-out route. “If we go past your gate you can connect to us but if you’re not sure, contact us and we’ll let you know what we can do,” Guthrie said. Lake Hood is on the list for the next stage of the roll-out and that can’t come soon enough for people living in the original part of the settlement, says resident Graham Kennedy. Houses in the Lake Hood extension have fibre through the EA Networks scheme, but those in
the original section can only access this service through a wireless service developed by a private provider. This feeds off the EA Networks fibre. While there has been some uptake of the wireless service, fibre to the gate can’t come soon enough for people in the original housing area, Kennedy said. What makes the lack of ultra fast broadband more galling is knowing the fibre optic cable was laid two or three years ago as far as the top of the rise at the entrance to Lake Hood, but has been taken no further. “It only needs to be extended to liven the streets. It’s been an ongoing battle here really,” he said.

very aggressive, wanting bank account details from me for an automatic payment,” Robinson said. “I said I don’t give bank details over the phone but she wouldn’t take no for an answer.” Robinson refused to give her bank details and instead hung up on the scammer after they pushed for credit card details. “She’s very good at it, I must admit. It felt like she’d been in that line of work for a while.” She reported the call to the po-
lice and the Cancer Society. A police spokesperson said anyone who receives a similar call should contact the police or net safe on 0508 638 723. Acting chief executive of the Cancer Society Central Districts division, Chris Franklyn, said incidents like this are “incredibly annoying and disheartening” but says he is glad this time no money was handed over. “When scammers use our name to target fake donations, they are actually stealing money
from people with cancer,” he said. “We do not receive any government funding and people generously donate that money to support patients with cancer and fund research and the services we offer and that’s where they expect to see that money used.” The Cancer Society warns anyone receiving suspicious calls or demanding bank or card details to contact their local Cancer Society to check if it is genuine or report the incident.

Final touches added to solo exhibition By Megan gnad

Port Chalmers-based artist, James Robinson, added the final touches to his new solo exhibition at the Ashburton Art Gallery, yesterday, in time for this weekend’s launch. His work, Strange Attractor, will be displayed in the Colin Redmond Gallery from January 30 to February 25, following the afternoon launch on Sunday. He told the Ashburton Guardian he had reworked an old series of art from 10 years ago, but this time focused on “psyco-geography, land forms, strata and aerial views”. “It’s like jazzing up a new dress,” he said. “I really like texture, and I want people to look at that.” “People really appreciate that I’m making art from within myself and I’m trying to make it real.” Robinson was the Paramount Winner of the Wallace Art Awards in 2007, and has held numerous prestigious residencies at the Sarjeant (Wanganui), the McCahon Trust (Auckland) as well as the William Hodges in Southland and others in New York and Berlin. In August 2014, he was awarded a year-long residency

Pokie spend rising Over the past year gamblers in the Ashburton District invested almost $6 million in gaming machines. And that investment shows every sign of increasing in 2017, with the September to December quarter up almost 2 per cent on the previous year, at $1,529,017. Across the district there are 137 gaming machines installed in 12 venues and over a year those machines pulled $166 out of the pockets of every man, woman or child in the district. Ashburton’s spend for the quarter was just 0.69 per cent of the national gaming machine spend.

Teachers disciplined Dozens of teachers were disciplined or struck off last year for sexual, inappropriate or aggressive behaviour towards students. Fifty teachers were censured and 19 had their registrations cancelled in 2016, in the year to October 31. Among those cases there were more than 40 incidences of inappropriate behaviour, sexual misconduct, or physical, aggressive or violent behaviour towards students, according to Education Council data. In 2014, 51 teachers were censured, and 44 were in 2015. - NZME

■ ASHBURTON DISTRICT COUNCIL
Councillors face tough decisi By Sue NewmaN
Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
This week Ashburton District councillors took a long, hard look at the district’s next big ticket project, a new administration building and library, designed to meet the community’s needs for the next 50 years. For the past 15 years the project has been tagged in the council’s long term plan as a project for the future; that future has now arrived and next month councillors will decide where the administration building and library will be built. Four possible sites are in the mix, down from a long list initially identified by councillors, council staff and consultants Opus Architecture. As well as identifying possible sites the council looked at options that included refurbishing both the existing library and administration building and extending the administration centre, building two new complexes on separate sites and rebuilding and co-locating both. The initial list of 14 site options, included the Ashburton Business Estate, a new library on Ashburton College land, several sites owned or part-owned by the council and land not owned by the council. Those sites were narrowed down against a range of criteria, including the need to achieve the most financially prudent outcome for ratepayers today and for the district well into the future. The final short list included
Filled to overflowing, the current council administration building is no longer suitable for council’s needs. – extending the current administration building to accommodation both administration and library functions; building a new administration building and library on the current administration site, building both facilities in the Eastfield development, two options on the Methodist Church site and the Balmoral Hall site. Two rounds of community
consultation were undertaken and taking that feedback on board as well as measuring each site against a range of criteria Opus came up with its best site option – land on which the Methodist Church and old county council building stand on Baring Square east. The prospect of demolishing the earthquake-damaged church
raised community opposition, however, because the Methodist land is in three titles, it could be possible to retain the church, demolish the county council building and build both the administration complex and library on this site. Councillors will vote on their first choice site on February 23. Some ratepayers are not con-
vinced a new administration centre is needed and others want the library to remain on its current site, but the council has already voted to move ahead with a project that could come with a price tag that could hit $20 million. This will be reduced by the sale of land that could be surplus to council requirements.

■ INTERNATIONAL HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY
In brief
Hate ‘doesn’t belong in NZ’ Race Relations Commissioner Dame Susan Devoy is calling for police to record hate crime statistics to combat racism. “This is not something they collect when responding to callouts,” she said in a speech at the Holocaust remembrance service in Wellington yesterday. “Free speech is one thing, hate speech is another. These things don’t belong in my country, not in New Zealand.” Devoy was speaking to those gathered for the annual United Nations International Holocaust Remembrance Day service at Makara Cemetery. She said online hate speech also needed to be addressed, particularly in media website comment sections and on their social media pages. “Ignoring the hatred and normalising it is how it starts. “Hate starts small, but so does hope.” Devoy told those gathered remembrance was important, as “to cherish and protect our humanity, we must never forget our inhumanity”. Wellington mayor Justin Lester also spoke at the service, saying

Hung jury The trial of a prominent New Zealander and a relative has ended with a hung jury after a day and a half of deliberations. However, the prosecution indicated at the Manukau District Court it will seek a retrial. The case is subject to heavy blanket suppression orders, including the defendants’ identity and the charges. - NZME Dame Susan Devoy said more needs to be done about hate speech online. “we need to advance the causes of peace, of justice, and of human rights around the world”. Lester said people must not follow the politics asking them to turn their backs on “fellow humans”. “It’s not enough to say that we were just following or-
ders or that we were just trying to look the other way. All of us have a moral responsibility to be brave and to stand up to hate,” he said. German ambassador Gerhard Thiedemann said the Holocaust was “a tragedy for all of humankind”. “The view into the dark

He loves being outside and that’s where he spends most of his time. Coco takes time to trust people, but once he does he loves cuddles and every night he is stuck to his owner like glue when she is on the sofa watching TV. Grey cat: Nounou and also called Nounours. This female persian will be 10 years old in May and is a real teddy bear! You can play with her, give her lots of cuddles, she loves it. Triplets prepare for big year ahead High-achieving Ashburton triplets Erana, Chloe and Jamee Te Moananui are looking forward to supporting each other in 2017 as they prepare for their final year at Mount Hutt College. Susan Sandys reports.

eing a triplet is not always easy. Just ask Ashburton’s Erana, Chloe and Jamee Te Moananui. The 17-year-olds are often compared to each other, as they compete at school and on the sports field. Then there is the issue of being mistaken for one another, with their teachers and aquaintances sometimes complaining they are seeing triple. “Are you sure you are not identical?” is one question the Te Moananui girls get asked all the time. Erana is the oldest, Chloe the middle and Jamee the youngest. Jamee is the baby of the family in other aspects, a little shorter than her two sisters and used to being treated like “royalty” by family members declaring her their favourite, something which used to happen a lot when the girls were toddlers. As Erana and Chloe tried to over-talk each other, Jamee seemed quite happy to sit back. “I knew how to talk, you didn’t let me,” Jamee jokingly told her sisters this week. Both Jamee and Chloe are prefects at Mount Hutt College this year and Erana is head girl. But all three have been congratulated for taking the head girl role, as some members of the public do not always manage to distinguish between them. Sometimes Jamee and Chloe will say “No, it wasn’t me”, other times it just seems easier to say thanks, and move on, passing on the congratulations to Erana at a later stage. At school everyone from Year 11 up knows the three well, however, the triplets are prepared for younger students and new teachers getting confused this year. If any approach either Chloe or Jamee requiring head girl intel, the pair joke they may just fluff their way through. “Plans are yet to be discussed,” is one phrase they could use. So readers take note, this will be a sure giveaway you are not talking to the actual Mount Hutt College head girl, but one of her equally bubbly sisters. The similarity between the three is something the triplets admit to having had fun with over the years. While Chloe and Jamee don’t look identical, the lines are

more blurred between Chloe and Erana, and also between Jamee and Erana. In Year 9 at Mount Hutt College, Erana and Chloe swapped classes one day. “One of my teachers said ‘I know the difference, I can always tell’. So we decided to test her,” Chloe said. Then when in her sister’s class, the teacher asked Chloe “Why are you being so quiet today Erana?” Chloe had to think quickly and said something along the lines of “You said I had been too loud lately”. They didn’t get into trouble that year and even the deputy principal had a laugh about it when their ruse was discovered. But they tried it again in Year 10, and one of the teachers involved was not impressed, so they have been on their best behaviour since. Sibling rivalry is something the trio experienced as children, but today they view having competition between them as a good thing. They believe they all have their individual strengths. All three went for the head girl role, but Chloe and Jamee were more than happy to miss out to Erana. “I was stoked for her,” Chloe
said. She and Jamee are proud of their sister and her leadership qualities, something they have noticed time and again on the rugby field. “Erana is really good at motivating people,” Chloe said. And Erana is quick to point out the individual strengths of her two sisters. She said Chloe was good at Sonny Bill-style passing manoeuvres and Jamee at being strategic – noticing gaps and working out the next move. The three are dedicated to their rugby, having played since the age of eight. They have been members of the Ashburton College girls’ team for the past three years and hope a proposed new Mount Hutt College girls’ team gets off the ground this year. They are also members of the Burnham Dunsandel women’s team. They want to keep playing rugby as long as possible and would ultimately like to reach international representative level. The triplets live on an Ashburton lifestyle block with their parents, older brother, grandmother and pets, including a dog, two cats and a goat. While they are always helping out with jobs
such as raising calves and they job-share a relief milking position on a neighbouring property, the young women each have career goals which don’t involve farming. Jamee wants to be a policewoman, Chloe is considering a career in forensic science or psychology, while Erana plans to continue study leading into nutrition and health. The trio have similar tastes in clothing, but have a group rule never to buy the same item. “You have to run into the shop and if you like it, grab it first,”
Erana said. Shopping together is just one of the many fun things they enjoy as triplets. Being a triplet is not always easy, but Erana, Chloe and Jamee would not have it any other way. They consider they are blessed to almost always have each other’s company and believe any competition between them makes them support each other more, and gives them motivation to strive further. “It motivates you kind of in a way to do better, to boost yourself up,” Jamee said.

Nuclear codes ‘very scary’ BY DEBRA KILLALEA Donald Trump has revealed how he felt when he was given the nuclear codes for the first time. In his first major interview since taking office, a journalist for the US’s ABC News, David Muir, asked Mr Trump to describe the moment he was given the secret information. “When they explain what it represents and the kind of destruction you’re talking about, it is a very sobering moment, yes. “Yes it’s very scary in a sense,” he told Muir. Muir asked if it kept him up at night, but Mr Trump said it didn’t because he has every confidence he would do the right job. “But it’s a very scary thing,” he said. In the interview, the president repeated his claim that the media got it wrong on the size of the crowd watching his inauguration. Mr Trump also detailed more about his cabinet’s plans to veto immigrants, including those from Muslim backgrounds, and how he didn’t think it would create anger because the world was already angry enough. The President also reiterated his claims of voter fraud in the November election, and promised to send the feds into Chicago, which he described as being like a “war zone”. Here’s what else we learnt from the wideranging interview. The President maintained people loved his inauguration speech and again claimed to

The journalist then asked Mr Trump if it sent a message to the American people that this issue was more important than others. Crackdown on doping – in chess Scientists have called for a crackdown on doping in chess after it emerged players may be taking performance-enhancing substances. A major study has for the first time identified two stimulants that significantly boost a player’s endurance and ability to concentrate during a match. Meanwhile, researchers have contacted 1500 strong players to ask about the prevalence of drug use in the game. Researchers are yet to reveal the findings of the survey, but say they now have some idea of how much the two drugs are used by the chess-playing community. The main study, published in a leading journal, was carried out by 13 professors and researchers from several German universities and the University of Stockholm, who analysed more than 3000 games played by 40 players.
Among its findings were that modafinil, a drug used used for treatment of disorders such as narcolepsy, improved the players’ performances by an average of 15 per cent. Methylphenidate, more commonly known as the ADHD treatment ritalin, boosted performances by 13 per cent, and caffeine, which they also tested, by around 9 per cent. The study was carried out by giving each player a series of neuropsychological tests and questionnaires and then asking them to play against computers running the formidable chess-playing program Fritz 12. One surprising finding was that the drugs made the subjects play slower, suggesting that rather than enhancing decision-making, drugs improved players’ ability to spend more time on a decision
and perform more thorough calculations. The authors wrote: “This suggests that neuroenhancers do not enhance the quality of thinking and decision-making per time unit but improve the players’ ability or willingness to spend more time on a decision and hence to perform more thorough calculations.” Drug-testing exists to some extend in chess, but only at prestige events like the world championship. So far the game’s only brush
with a doping scandal was a curious incident involving the top Ukrainian Grandmaster Vassily Ivanchuk who refused to provide a urine sample at the Chess Olympiad in 2008. The “scandal” ended up fizzling out when it emerged Ivanchuk, a notoriously grouchy character, had just been so annoyed at losing he fell out with the official. Dr Klaus Lieb, a professor of psychiatry and psychotherapy at the University of Mainz, said that the researchers wanted to see whether people who already were performing at a high level mentally could have their performance enhanced through chemicals. Dr Lieb cautioned that while the drugs seem to boost performance, taking them was not a good idea. “Their use may cause severe side effects and dependency, especially with repeated use,” he said. - PA
Cobain’s guitar popular Frances Bean wants her late father’s guitar back off her estranged husband. The 24-year-old artist has filed documents asking a court to force Isaiah Silva to return a six-string 1959 Martin D-18E acoustic – the instrument famously played by the late Kurt Cobain during Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged session – as she claims he has refused to give it back since she filed for divorce last March. Isaiah has insisted Frances – whose mother is Courtney Love – gave him the guitar as a gift, while the brunette beauty insists she would never have given him a “priceless family heirloom”.
Just how I’m wired Emma Stone has opened up about her lifelong struggle with anxiety and the therapy that helped her overcome it. In an article from Daily Mail, the 28-year-old actress, who is nominated for an Oscar for her role in this year’s box office smash La La Land, talks to The Hollywood Reporter about her path to fame and the crippling shyness that could easily have stopped her in her tracks. “It’s just the way I’m wired” Emma admitted as she recalled being a nervous child and her parents putting her into therapy from the age of seven to conquer panic attacks. The actress flourished at her youth theatre classes after school enjoying stepping into different characters and improv comedy.

In brief Chasing sevens success New Zealand are leaning on their exceptional history at the Wellington Sevens as they seek out an increasingly rare world series tournament win. The All Blacks have gone seven tournaments without even reaching the final, including at Rio, with some of the shine having faded on an enormously successful team. However, their success at Wellington is enduring, having won nine of the last 14 tournaments there, including the last three in a row. - NZME

It’s understood the Blues’ scheduled home competition match against the Reds on June 2 will now be played in Apia. Title win a massive buzz BY MATT MARKHAM
MATT.M@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Mid Canterbury has two new national champions walking in its midst – champions of the tennis variety. In what is believed to be one of Mid Canterbury’s finest tennis achievements, Neil McCann and Andre Van Rooyen claimed the title in the national doubles at the Tennis New Zealand Senior Nationals in Christchurch during the week. And it was a case of double delight for McCann too who, just hours before, had claimed honours in the singles championship as well. Playing the 50 years and over age bracket for the tournament, McCann and Van Rooyen saw off all challenges to win the title, including a nail-biting final match
against the second-ranked team of Steve Billing and Grant Waller. The match went to a super tiebreaker after the first two sets were split 6-2 3-6. Van Rooyen had suffered an injury to his hand which was restricting his abilities but the pair dug deep to the win the tiebreaker 10-1. “I’d taken a smash to the hand and every chance I could get I was putting ice on it,” Van Rooyen said. “Adrenalin kicked in a bit I think though, and we managed to pull through. “It was a massive buzz, I’m still riding the high now.” McCann said the pair had put plenty of hours practice in prior to the championships and having the ability to practice on the Allenton grass courts to prepare for
Hagley Park was a huge bonus. “That helped us without doubt,” McCann said. “There were a lot of North Island players down who hadn’t had that luxury so it was a bit of an advantage. “When he reached the tiebreaker I said to Andre that it was time to put everything we had practised into action and we played a super tie-break.” The pairs match came hot on the heels of McCann’s singles final against the No.1 ranked Philip Hempstead which lasted for close to three hours. Van Rooyen described the match as a titanic struggle to watch but he said McCann’s determination was a real motivator for their game. After winning the first set 6-4, McCann set about a see-saw sec-
ond set before winning 7-6 on a tie-break. “I was pretty shattered, but the past few days since things have been pretty ginger too.” It was a walk down memory lane for McCann who won the 40-45 age bracket title back in 2005 in Auckland – two years after his win in the National Masters Singles Final in 2003. His win brings him right into contention now to represent New Zealand at the World Nationals in Miami later in the year. “They asked me if I was interested and I have decided to have a real crack at it and see what happens,” McCann said. The event would see him playing in a team environment for the first week before stepping out into individual events the following week.
The Perth Wildcats are breathing a huge sigh of relief after star import Bryce Cotton turned down an offer to return to the NBA in order to play out the NBL season. Cotton, who has previously played with Utah, Phoenix, and Memphis in the NBA, was offered a 10-day contract to suit up with the Atlanta Hawks. But the 24-year-old has decided to stay with the Wildcats until the end of the season. - AAP
More Big Bash games Big Bash League organisers have expanded the Australian domestic Twenty20 competition from 32 to 40 regular-season matches. But no additional franchises are planned to join the tournament from the 2017-18 season. All eight teams will get an extra home match as part of the expansion, increasing their regular-season fixtures from eight to 10. The finals format will remain the same as previous years, with two semi-finals and a final taking the number of games to 43. - AAP

Brotherly love put on hold By Matt MarkhaM
matt.m@theguardian.co.nz
Davey and Dan Maw are taking sibling rivalry to a whole new level tonight. The Methven brothers will provide the main fight of the night at the inaugural Dubliner Fight Night in Methven. Twenty-two fighters will take to the ring for the fundraising event which will see proceeds raised go to the Methven Rugby Cub’s lighting upgrade and a donation will also be made to St John. The Maw brothers’ bout has been much anticipated around the Methven district with both well-known sportsmen in their own rights having competed for Mid Canterbury at both rugby and cricket. But if the town is getting excited, the lads are keeping it all
pretty cool, calm and collected. “It’s going to be good to get it out of the way,” Dan said. “I’ve enjoyed the build-up and the training, that’s been really good but now I’m just sort of keen to get in the ring and get it over and done with.” The fight night was initially set down for December, but a date clash with Joseph Parker’s WBO World Heavyweight fight with Andy Ruiz saw the night postponed until tonight allowing an extra few weeks to prepare. Now, the training is all done and there’s not much more that can be done until the gloves bump and the bell rings. “I’m going to play golf on Saturday,” Davey said. “It will be a good distraction from it, keeping busy should be good.”
The brothers laughed off the suggestion that there was strong word about Methven that their father, John, has put the family farm up as a purse for the fight. “I don’t know about that,” Davey said. “Maybe the winner could fight him instead.” They said their mother Robyn “wasn’t too happy” about her two sons smacking each other round a bit, but that she would still be ringside to support them. “It might be a good thing that she works in the dental industry,” Dan laughed. The event sold out in minutes with more than 300 people expected to attend the event.

Martin Guptill’s rousing form against Australia of late makes him arguably the most significant New Zealand batting figure in the Chappell-Hadlee one-day international cricket series. Usually that accolade would sit with the captain Kane Williamson. Ross Taylor might have a say in that argument. But at the very least it’s a subject which would make for a quality debate. Guptill’s numbers, and especially against Australia, makes encouraging reading. Since the start of last year Guptill has had a run of 90, 31, 59, 114, 45 and 34 - 373 runs at 62 - against Australia. - NZME
Parker wants home fight WBO champion Joseph Parker seems prepared to sacrifice money for home advantage for his first defence, expected to be against British mandatory challenger Hughie Fury. Negotiations between Parker’s promoters Duco and Fury’s Frank Warren will enter a pursebid process next week, with the highest bidder winning all rights to the contest. If Parker’s camp wins, the bout will likely take place in New Zealand in early April. - NZME
Diamonds still tough Getting a sucker-punch win over Australia in the first round of the Quad Series will be easier said than done, according to the Silver Ferns. The trans-Tasman netball powerhouses square off in Durban tomorrow morning, with preparation likely to play a large part in determining the outcome of the off-season test. New Zealand are arguably closer to full strength, although they must cater for the absence of injured wing defence Kayla Cullen. - NZME

The Fed ready for old foe
Win-win for Williamses
By Melissa WooDs
By Darren Walton
Roger Federer admits he thought the time may have passed for another Australian Open final against his old rival Rafael Nadal. The legends last met on a court playing some mini tennis with some juniors and discussed playing a charity match. Instead they may square off in a grand slam decider that many – including themselves – felt was beyond them. The last time the duo battled in the final at Melbourne Park was in 2009, which Nadal won in a classic five-setter. Federer, 35, is returning from six months out following knee surgery last year while Nadal, 30, also had an injury-ravaged 2016 and is into his first grand slam semi-final since 2014. Federer booked his berth in the final with a gripping 7-5 6-3 1-6 4-6 6-3 win over Swiss compatriot Stan Wawrinka while Nadal had to get past in-form Grigor Dimitrov last night to complete the fairytale. “It would be unreal, both of us would never thought that we would be here potentially playing in the final again,” Federer said after his five-set victory. “I went to open his academy and I told him, ‘I wish we could do a charity match or something’, but I was on one leg and he had a wrist injury and we were playing some mini tennis with some juniors, but it was the best we could do. “A few months later we are maybe going into the final; I think it is very special for both of us.” The Swiss master, who is gunning for an elusive 18th major title, described himself as Nadal’s “No.1 fan”. “Rafael Nadal has given me the biggest challenge in this game,” Federer said. “Of course it would be unreal as both of us would never thought that we would be here potentially playing in the final again.” If not Nadal, the 17-times grand slam champion will be playing Dimitrov, who for years has had to carry the burdensome moniker of “Baby Fed” for his uncannily similar playing style to Federer. Federer will be contesting his record 28th grand slam final – eight more than Nadal in second place all-time – but first in Melbourne since winning his fourth Open crown in 2010. “It feels amazing. I never ever thought in my wildest dreams that I would be coming this far here,” he said. “Here I am, a couple of days off, it is beautiful. “I am so happy.” - AAP
Serena Williams insists it’s “win win” for sport’s most successful sisters regardless who reigns in an Australian Open final for the ages tonight. With a 23rd major triumph, 35-year-old Serena can surpass German great Steffi Graf as the most prolific grand slam singles champion in professional tennis history. Born-again Venus, five months shy of her 37th birthday and contesting her first major final since 2009, has the chance to become the oldest women’s grand slam champion in the 49-year open era. Numbers and statistics, though, don’t tell half the story of where the two inseparable siblings have come from to set up their remarkable ninth all-Williams grand slam title decider – and the oldest final ever on one of the sport’s four biggest stages. Six years ago, Serena was “quite literally” on her death bed after suffering a pulmonary embolism while laid up for almost 12 months after slashing her foot during 2010 Wimbledon celebrations. Venus has been battling Srojden’s syndrome since 2011 and few gave the former world No.1 any hope of adding to her seven singles slams. Little wonder Serena says that, despite everything at stake tonight, the result will be academic. “After everything that Venus has been through with her illness and stuff, I just can’t help but feel like it’s a win-win situation for me,” said the six-times champion who can also regain her world No.1 ranking from Angelique Kerber. A Venus victory would elevate her above Evonne Goolagong, Justine Henin and Maria Bueno and Dorathy Lambert Chambers into equal 10th with Suzanne Lenglen and Molla Bjurstedt Mallory.- AAP

Australian Open and we must say things are not looking too sparkly for Venus against baby sister, Serena. The pair have met in 11 finals. Serena has won eight of them and she hasn’t lost a final to her sister since Wimbledon in 2008. Sevens target Wellington By CampBell Burnes There will no excuses around poor preparation should the All Blacks Sevens fail to fire in their title defence at this weekend’s Wellington tournament. While poor preparation was a valid reason for a mediocre Dubai World Series tournament in December, New Zealand are now coming off a four-day camp in Rotorua and a full week in the capital as they seek a fourth consecutive Cup crown in their home event and a rise up the log from their current standing of fifth. Coaches Scott Waldrom and Tomasi Cama have opted to cut the rookie Tasman duo of Andrew Knewstubb and Trael Joass from the 14 as they finalised their 12man squad, but two rookies will be involved, 18-year-old playmaker Vilimoni Koroi and Tasman’s Tone Ng Shiu. Koroi is an excitement machine, fresh out of
school and with skills to match his speed. Captain Scott Curry, who missed the 2016 event, indicated that both new caps would be eased into it and would not start the opener against Samoa. “It’s a big game, so hopefully a few nerves were settled in the captain’s run. “There’s a good buzz in the team and everybody is just getting really clear on the game plans. “We want to play with a really positive intent this weekend, so if there are opportunities, (the coaches) want us to express ourselves,” Curry says, who is looking no further than the first play against Samoa. He was happy that friends and family could finally get to watch them play in a decent time zone after the overnight (NZT) events in Dubai and Cape Town before Christmas.
Skipper Scott Curry Waldrom is happy with what his charges have done this week and where they are at. Wellington tends to bring the best out of New Zealand, even this team, which is rebuilding to a
certain extent after the heartache of the Rio Olympics. “I think we’re in a really good place heading into the weekend,” he says. TV coverage starts from 10.50am today and New Zealand have a potentially juicy tussle first-up, at 1.41pm, against Samoa, now guided by the 1994-2016 national coach Sir Gordon Tietjens. Tietjens has sought to address Samoa’s recent inconsistency by having them train together in his Mt Maunganui back yard, so you can guarantee they will be fit, at the very least. It will be a popular Cup quarter-final qualification if they achieve that feat ahead of France and USA. The stumbling block for the Pool C quarter-finalists, assuming New Zealand is among them, is that South Africa and Fiji are the likely Pool B quarterfinalists. - NZME
Wiki named to captain the Warriors Veteran Ruben Wiki will captain the Warriors for NRL Auckland Nines at Eden Park next weekend. Wiki’s comeback for the fourth edition of the event was revealed yesterday, just two days before his 44th birthday. Wiki, who finished his NRL
career in 2008, will lead a Warriors squad studded with Nines experience while also featuring a collection of the club’s young players. The experience is provided by Shaun Johnson, Ryan Hoffman, Tuimoala Lolohea, Solomone
Kata and Blake Ayshford who have played in each of the previous three NRL Nines tournaments. Wiki was in the Kiwis’ titlewinning side at the World Nines in 1996 and 1997. “I’m still buzzing about having

the chance to play the Nines and now being asked to be captain as well takes it to another level,” said Wiki. “To be leading the boys out on to Eden Park will be one of the highlights of my league career.” - NZME
Looking for luck Two of Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman’s leading Gr.1 Vodafone New Zealand Derby chances will showcase their wares at Ellerslie tomorrow. Last-start Gr.1 Levin Classic-placed Jon Snow contests the NZB Insurance 3YO Mile, while Camino Rocoso tackles the Henley Park 1600, a special conditions maiden. “We’re just hoping Jon Snow has a bit of luck this time. We’re happy enough with him,” Baker said. - NZME
Promising 3YO sold Smart three-year-old Dark Universe will do his future racing across the Tasman. “He’s been sold and he’s going to Chris Waller’s stable,” Chris Wood said. The Cambridge trainer produced the Darci Brahma gelding to win his first two starts at Dargaville and at Te Rapa before he finished fifth behind the subsequent Group One winner Hall Of Fame at Ellerslie. - NZME
Cuneen jockey to follow In-form jockey Racha Cuneen has an opportunity to ride a black type winner for his employer when he partners Batman in today’s Speights Timaru Stakes at Riccarton. And the Neill Ridley-trained sprinter should be a strong chance in the feature event for Cuneen, who recently won the Telegraph at Trentham aboard longshot Signify. Batman was in good touch during the New Zealand Cup carnival with an open sprint victory off the back of his third placing in the Gr.3 Stewards’ Stakes. At his most recent appearance, the seven-year-old won the BP2GO Mosgiel Stakes at Wingatui.

Stimulating a child’s mind We all want to do our best for our children; for their health, their education and for their self-esteem. And it’s not easy, there’s so much “advice” from “experts” out there, many of whom contradict each other. At the end of the day, you are the expert on your child. You know what your child responds to, what stimulates them, what their pain threshold is like, which punishment is going to have the most impact. Just because it’s expert advice, doesn’t mean it’s the right advice for your child (but it doesn’t mean it’s wrong either). So try new things that make sense to you. See what your child responds to and enjoys.
Age and ability appropriate toys
2
Make sure the toys you buy for your child aren’t beyond what they are capable of playing with. For instance, a 1-year-old’s hand-eye co-ordination has improved considerably, so more challenging, interactive toys will be necessary.
Screen time
5
While the internet and social media are not without benefits, it does pay to research when screen time becomes too much screen time at different ages and make an early habit of time-limits.
Below are some ideas for stimulating a child’s mind: Reading
1
Routinely read to your child from birth. The benefits are massive, it exercises the brain, improves vocabulary and language skills, develops a child’s imagination, helps children to develop empathy and so much more.
Encourage creativity
3
It helps develop children’s ability to problem-solve and think outside the box. Let them enjoy having afternoon tea with imaginary friends and finger paint their wonderful creations, mess or no mess.
Nature
6
Go on nature walks with your child. We live in a country where nature’s never far from our back door. You could start a small garden with your child, look for bugs and birds in the bush and see if you can identify them, feed some birds in your backyard and see what breeds of birds you can attract with different feed.
Recognise your child’s strengths
4
For instance, if your child appears to spend a lot of time breaking things down and putting them back together, it may be that he or she will have a penchant for things mechanical.
Music
7
Expose your child (including in the womb) to all different types of music – classical, country, world. It is believed that a foetus can hear music from the womb and may even recognise songs he or she heard in utero after they emerge. v

Rising Stars – teaching based on respect Families are warmly welcomed at Rising Stars, experiencing an environment where their contributions are valued and partnership is fostered. We respect and celebrate cultural and individual diversity in our centre. Teachers understand the importance of learning about and sharing children’s culture, identity and language. Children’s learning is documented in an online portfolio which includes photos, stories and videos. At Rising Stars Pre-school, teaching is based on respect, responsibility and exploration in a supportive and enriching environment. Our teachers will support your child in creative and critical thought processes, providing experiences that introduce early concepts of maths, science, reading and creativity. Children can explore their environment and participate
in experiences in their own time. We extend our children’s interests helping them to make meaningful connections with the world they live in. Their interests are always at the heart of teaching and learning. Our children are encouraged to ask questions, make sense of their surroundings, play imaginatively and express themselves creatively. Technology is used to enhance children’s interests and knowledge. Teach-
ing strengths range from jazz dancing to playing the ukulele and this contributes to the richness of our programme. Employing teachers qualified in both early childhood and primary teaching, supports our transition to school programme. We proudly hold the Healthy Heart Award for creating an environment that promotes healthy eating and physical activity. We achieved the gold standard, one of the few pre-schools in Mid Canterbury to do so.
Rising Stars Pre-school offers affordable, quality education. We operate a teacher to child ratio of 1:8 for over twos, and 1:4 for under twos, allowing the children to form stronger relationships with their teachers. This is an outstanding ratio within the Ashburton area. We are situated in Allenton opposite the Ashburton College on Middle Road. Our hours are 7.30am – 5.30pm. We are licensed for 12 children in the nursery and 33 in the pre-school.

Second chance learning - change your life The Ashburton Leaning Centre has already commenced classes for 2017. We will be offering all our usual literacy/numeracy/language services to the people of Mid Canterbury. The confidence that comes with being able to read, write and carry out basic maths is something many of us take for granted. However, statistically a quarter of all adult New Zealanders have been identified as needing support in these vital areas. There are a vast number of reasons for this, ranging from something as simple as glue ear going undetected in primary school, through to complex learning difficulties or family challenges around valuing education. However, regardless of the cause, the outcome for adults who are affected is a feeling of worthlessness, low self-esteem and a sense of failure.
Unfortunately, it is these feelings that often deter some people from asking for help. It is not unheard of for an individual to be leading an ordinary life, and achieving

amazing things, yet not be able to read the alphabet. As the manager of Ashburton Learning Centre, Mary Philip has seen people develop amazing coping mechanisms to compensate for, and cover up, their lack of literacy skills. Imagine not being able to read directions, write a note to somebody or understand
people in relation to understanding and filling out forms, adapting to changes in technology or adjusting to a different style of learning that is removed from the normal classroom environment. The before and after transformations that Mary and her team achieve are inspiring. Individuals are assessed
to determine what may have influenced their learning difficulties, assigned a tutor and then goals are put in place to achieve the desired
outcome. These range from doing homework with their children, difficulties at work, apprenticeship help, NCEA level 1, ESOL.

OUR VIEW
Being a councillor is not a popularity game Sue Newman
SENIOR REPORTER
L
ife is never easy for newlyelected district councillors. They come into an organisation that’s already running, they pick up issues that are already rolling, take over decisions that have already been made. There’s much to learn, much to understand and so much institutional knowledge to acquire. They’re fired up with passion, drive and a desire to do good things. They hope to make a difference, to the things they saw as wrongs when they were on the other side of the fence. All of that is good and commendable. They also come fired up by the people who supported them, charged with a desire to fight for the rights of those who told them they were disappointed with the current council team, disillusioned with the system. They may have come on a crusade or driven by a single issue. All power to those who have the courage to take on this job, but as the new team will quickly discover their role is not just about fighting for the small guy or dealing with the small stuff. It is one of governance, making decisions for the greater good, taking a high level approach to issues rather than being swayed by emotion. It’s not about popularity and making friends among either your fellow councillors or among the district’s residents. It’s about doing the right thing for the district today and for the future. The new district council team is heavy on new faces and just how much of an impact this could have on the way in which the district does its business became very clear this week as councillors workshopped the district’s administration and library rebuild project. At every step the public has been kept informed and all details have been made public but the new councillors were clearly unhappy with, or unaware of decisions that had been made. There’s clearly a division in the council ranks. The new councillors and our new mayor appear to have a similar line of thinking and that could see this project derailed and taken back to square one. Is that an indication we’re in for three years of stalled projects, reversed decisions and no progress?

In case of emergency ... Peter Livingstone OUT OF SCHOOL
A
fter the Canterbury quakes, my father, who lives in Palmy North, announces to the wider family, and anyone else who would listen, that he had invested in a survival kit in case of an emergency. He (as he is prone to do) impressed upon us as his offspring to do likewise. Being the ever-faithful son, I ignored his advice. Fast forward to the Kaikoura quake and my long-suffering wife (how has she endured my opinion for so long?!) indicates a supply of food would be a good idea, especially if supermarkets can’t operate. I like to think I’m a survivalist and could make sparrow toasties over a pallet wood fire, or create a long drop using cabbage tree leaves, council road signposts and duct tape. So though reluctant, I agreed, and she set about squirrelling away emergency food. Now I say set about as if there was a frenzy of can buying and candlestick making. Nope. The first foray into stockpiling amounted to one packet of rice risotto – Chinese flavour in case you were asking – and two cans of spaghetti and sausages. It was comforting to read the sausages were made of 100 per cent beef and lamb. Now as I sit and bash the keyboard I can see said fledgling survival rations and already notice we are down one can of spaghetti. Turns out child number three wanted it for lunch and thus consumed 820g of 100 per cent beef and lamb mini-sausages drenched in salt-laden sauce. So is this typical in your family? I can tell you now that I have seen this before. Years ago when teaching a Year 5-8 class at Maruia School, we learned about the work of Civil Defence. Our school was a Civil Defence outpost. In fact our school was an outpost full stop. The culmination of the unit was a visit from a Bear Gryllstype Civil Defence dude from Greymouth. He arrived in some gnarly sounding 4WD of course, and he had a squint like Clint Eastwood. He was the type of guy that would make you feel less manly because you can’t use those stupid truck tie-down ratchet
In case of emergency, it would probably be best for your kit to look more like this, than two rolls of loo paper, half a candle and a crumpled list of what was to be found in it. handle thingys! With a voice like Joe Cocker and sinewy forearms like a high country shepherd, he began taking us through surviving a disaster. Being in Maruia, we were only 40 minutes from the mighty Maruia Falls, formed after the Inangahua quake of ’68. He was around then and said how important it was to have emergency supplies for isolated communities like ours. He then told of how a few years ago with a previous principal he had in fact helped the class set up an emergency kit for the school. Really I enquired? What did it look like and where was it located. Surely I would have come across it by now? Being for a school it must have been substantial?
Well Old Man Defence knew exactly what it looked like. It was in a large white bucket with a lid. Like a nappy bucket he said. It apparently was full of emergency gear and some food items. Nope, never seen that I said. Kids said the same. Then, in a moment of clarity, I remembered a white lidded bucket I had under my office desk in the corner. Could that be it? I rushed to grab it like a giddy schoolgirl and thrust it in front of him, pleased to show that I could be of some use as a man. I did notice it was light in my hands but said nothing in case it was meant to be that way and as a mere school teacher knew nothing about what is needed to survive. Eagerly we gathered around the bucket, like a scene from
Indiana Jones where the hero lifts the lid off a 3000-year-old sarcophagus. Defence dude stepped forward and muscled open the lid to reveal the contents we would need to survive for up to three days without help. The pride in his face, as he informed the class that he was the one to have put this together for them in case they ever needed it, was flowing like an irrigator. Dramatically he tore off the lid to reveal two rolls of loo paper, half a candle and a crumpled list of what was to be found in the bucket. The class laughed (along with me) and Indiana Jones looked initially shocked, which changed to a semi-accusatory stare as he met my eyes. The rest of the lesson was quickly concluded with

short sentences about always being prepared, then he roared off. Turns out the kit had been raided by everyone in the school prior to me. It got to the point whereby the bucket was shoved under a desk and long forgotten. I felt slightly bad for the survival guy so I decided to put something back in it. I was rather pleased to phone him and let him know I was restoring the bucket and that it now contained two cans of spaghetti and sausages – made with 100 per cent beef and lamb! In brief
■ EQC
Insurers heading to court Insurers IAG and Tower are headed to court to challenge the Earthquake Commission’s payouts for Canterbury earthquake claimants whose properties had land issues. The two separate cases centre around the difference between what the insurers paid out to settle those claims and how the EQC calculated the payments made to some private insurers. In order to speed up the claims process IAG, whose brands include AMI and State Insurance, and some other insurers decided to reinstate or cash settle claims for customers with properties facing increased liquefaction vulnerability instead of insisting they go to EQC first to get their land either fixed up and paid out on.
The insurers claim they did this on the understanding that EQC would compensate them for the costs. But now the EQC has made the payments and published its methodologies the insurers say they have discovered there is a “fundamental difference” in the approach to the land settlements between private insurers and EQC. An IAG spokesman said EQC had taken the approach that it would not pay the actual cost

of overcoming land damage through foundation enhancement on the basis that this is not ‘land repair’ even though it cures land damage by over coming it. “We disagree with this approach and how these land payments have been calculated and due to this we have issued legal proceedings against EQC. “A legal ruling will confirm EQC’s liabilities and private insurers’ recoverable costs in this situation, and help all parties
avoid such confusion in future.” Tower chief executive Richard Harding said he believed court action was now the only way to create clarity for both private insurers and EQC. “Despite repeated discussions with EQC, we have failed to agree how to treat these costs. “The private insurance industry needs clarity and a High Court ruling now seems the only way forward on this particular issue.” Harding said the court action would not prejudice or impact on customer settlements. “We are simply seeking to have EQC fairly reimburse Tower for costs incurred responding to ILV [increased liquefaction vulnerability] in settlements already reached.” - NMZE
NZME and Fairfax New Zealand are talking up their credentials as a locally-listed company that pays tax in their latest efforts to win regulatory approval to merge to create a news operation the competition regulator fears will be too dominant. The news organisations say a merger would let them build a “real opportunity” to compete with the likes of online ad giants Google and Facebook, which take about 80 per cent of all digital ad revenue, to create a sustainable business that supports local journalism and contributes to New Zealand’s tax base, they said in response to questions that arose from a public conference held by the Commerce Commission on their merger proposal last year. “NZME and Fairfax see this as an excellent opportunity for New Zealand journalism, other New Zealand media companies, New Zealand advertisers (including central and local government) and investors on the NZX (including ACC and NZSF),” the companies said. “These are real benefits likely to result from the merger that outweigh any concerns about concentration in ownership of (in any event non-overlapping) print products, in the converged and diverse market for New Zealand news and information.” Fairfax’s New Zealand unit generated a tax credit of $1.4 million in the 12 months ended June 30, 2016, after the publisher wrote down $106.8 million from the value of its mastheads, buildings, and software, leading to a pre-tax loss of $76.4 million. In 2015, Fairfax NZ’s report tax payable of $12.5 million. NZME has only been operating as a standalone entity since June
last year, and its tax expense for the six months ended June 30, 2016 was $61.5 million, which included a settlement with the Inland Revenue Department over alleged tax avoidance. The commission is due to make a final decision by March 15 and held a two-day conference on the matter in Wellington last month. The regulator’s draft decision was that authorising the deal’s impact on diversity of media coverage outweighed the size of expected financial gains. The Commerce Act can authorise anti-competitive deals, provided it’s satisfied “the acquisition will result, or will be likely to result, in such a benefit to the public that it should be permitted”. In their latest submission, the publishers say a merger would let the new entity generate positive cash-flow, giving it time to “maintain the number and quality of its journalistic coverage while at the same time growing its digital revenues to a point that they are sufficient to support the New Zealand publishing businesses’ large fixed cost base”. That would form a base “where the digital business adequately funds the quantity and quality of journalism produced today, so the businesses are not reliant on print to support their fixed costs (although some print products are likely to remain, the print products will not be essential to cover fixed costs as they are today)”. Fairfax and NZME have previously downplayed the size of editorial job cuts if a merger gets the go-ahead, saying of the $136.5 million to $218.7 million of quantified benefits over five years in the draft decision, only 10 per cent to 13 per cent of that total would come from “a reduction in duplicated journalist roles”. - NZME
Estate agents cleared A real estate industry watchdog has cleared agents and agencies of wrongdoing over their involvement in the initial sales of neighbouring Mangere Bridge properties, which were then repeatedly flipped over four days. The two Coronation Rd properties were sold a total of five times last August in the space of just four days. One of the homes surged in price by $400,000 during that time and their collective value jumped by $550,000 in under a week. - NZME
Lower power sales New Zealand’s relatively flat demand for electricity continues to weigh on the listed generatorretailers, which reported lower retail sales in the final six months of 2016 in a moribund market. Wellington-based Contact Energy yesterday joined Mercury New Zealand, Meridian Energy and Genesis Energy in lodging its latest operating metrics with the NZX, and continued the theme of weak electricity sales, with mass market and commercial and industrial electricity demand down 0.6 per cent to 4,001 gigawatt hours in the six months ended December 31, while the average electricity sales price was down 1.3 per cent to $179.01 per megawatt hour. - NZME
Guest nights up A surge in international visitors continued to drive a rise in guest nights in New Zealand, the latest data shows. National guest nights jumped 6.0 per cent to three million in October compared to the same month a year ago, Statistics New Zealand said yesterday. Guest nights were up 6.5 per cent on the North Island and 5.3 per cent on the South Island. Domestic guest nights dipped 0.6 per cent to 1.76 million while international guest nights jumped 17 per cent to 1.24 million. - NZME
Lyttelton strike looms Strike action is still looming at Lyttelton Port Co’s container terminal after further mediation failed to reach a settlement although talks are continuing, the port said in an emailed customer notice. “The current strike notices have not been withdrawn. There remain strike notices in place for Friday 27 and Saturday 28 January, and for three days from Friday 3 February to Sunday 5 February,” port marketing manager Simon Munt said in the statement. - NZME
Building costs soar The cost of new home builds has risen in the past 12 months at the fastest pace since 2005. The December consumer price index shows the cost of new house builds rose 6.5 per cent in 2016 as the overall inflation rate for the year rose 1.3 per cent. The Statistics NZ CPI figures do not include the cost of land and also excludes sales of existing residential housing. “The last time new housing build costs were increasing this rapidly was in the middle of the last housing boom in September 2005,” said KiwiBank chief economist Zoe Wallis. The rising costs are likely to be even higher in Auckland where new dwelling consents topped more than 10,000 in the year to November. - NZME

Originally the Tinwald Domain’s pond doubled as its swimming pool but Tinwald residents were keen to have a specific area in the domain set aside for swimming and in 1911 the swimming pool was excavated at a cost of 78 pounds. In its early years the pool was little more than a large, dark area
of water filled from the pond, but health concerns meant this practice changed and the pool was hooked up to the Ashburton town water supply. While the old pool with its grassy banks and sheltering hedges provided a great picnic spot for many years, eventually the domain board decided it was

time for an upgrade. The sides were concreted – and left unpainted – but the bottom remained unchanged and muddy. The pool still remained a dark mass of water. Swimmer expectations changed and by the late 1950s the domain board decided it was time for another upgrade. This time the pool bottom was raised and concreted and a shallow pool created. The Tinwald pool entered a new era and for many more years summer memories were made by the families who picnicked on its grassy banks while children swam and teens enjoyed what had to be the best spring diving board in the district. Over the years the pool hosted many swimming carnivals. Competition from other pools and the high cost of upkeep
meant the Tinwald pool eventually struggled to stay in business. A few cold summers put pressure on the board and its finances and at one time the pool’s future appeared in doubt. The Ashburton District Council came to the rescue, tying the pool’s management in with what was then the Ashburton Community Pool. The board also stepped up and undertook another expensive revamp of the facility upgrading the pools and installing solar panels and heat pumps that ensure the water was warm, regardless of the weather. Today the Tinwald pool is well used and is one of the district’s most popular hot day spots. It is open every weekend 12 noon to 7pm, and week days from January 30 until March 3, from 4pm to 7pm.

car. The Plains Railway received world-wide attention when in 1981 the Rogers Locomotive Works Built K Class locomotive, K88 or “Washington” as she is named, was returned to steam after being buried in the Oreti River for 50 years for use as a stop-bank and railway protection. What also attracted large amounts of attention was that this restoration was performed largely by one man, the late Bob Anderson. The K88 can be viewed in its glory during the society’s open days, where it takes passengers up and down 3km of railway track, preserved by the railway society. The Pioneer Village recreates how life was in New Zealand’s earlier days, shortly after European colonisation. The old Waterton Anglican Church takes pride of place alongside the former Chertsey Railway Station, and a functioning blacksmith’s shop. The church can be hired for events, such as wedding ceremonies. The rural history section displays an impressive range of vintage tractors, traction engines and other farm machinery. 2016 sees the railway celebrating its 45th year. They will have celebrations throughout the year, however the main event will be held over Labour Weekend (October 22-24), so mark it in your calendar now! The vintage railway’s next open day is February 7.

The museum was established by Bob Lynn, who spent a lifetime working with wood. The Lynn Woodwork Museum contains a marvellous collection of ornamental turning lathes, and associated equipment. The museum also features a major collection of woodworking tools dating from the 1600’s, with the museum holding some 5000 examples of early tools.
TINWALD GOLF CLUB Established in 1967, the Tinwald Golf Club is situated on reserve land adjacent to the Tinwald Domain. The 18 hole course is predominantly flat and easy walking, with tree-lined fairways and a number of waterways meandering throughout the course, providing challenging water hazards for golfers to negotiate. Located on Frasers Road, the golf club welcomes new membership, and encourages members and visitors to enjoy a beverage at the club house following a round.
LAKE HOOD Located only 4km from Tinwald, Lake Hood is part of the Ashburton Aquatic Park. A haven for water-sports, the lake provides areas for kayaking, boating, fishing, sailing, and swimming, as well as an eight-lane international rowing course and a separate international water-skiing course. The park includes a number of picnic tables, making it a stunning location for relaxation. The lake also features a restaurant,
bar and function facilities, for a fabulous day by the water.
SHOPPER’S DELIGHT The business heart of Tinwald lies in the block of shops in the centre of Archibald Street. More than 100 years ago, this same shopping complex had a blacksmith, general store, bakery and grocery, two carpenters and cabinet makers, a shoemaker, several grain stores, a hotel, saddler and
wheelwright. Early Tinwald was a rural servicing town and the businesses in it met the needs of the rural community. Over time, the growth of Tinwald has fanned out and businesses have established themselves all along the main route and branched off its side roads. Tinwald is now home to some big name companies and is bursting with opportunity. Its community continues to grow and meet the needs of those both within the district and much further afield.

Terrace View Retirement Village is more than a retirement home, it’s a complete lifestyle community. It offers residents affordable luxury living with the benefits of experienced and skilled staff and the comforts of home. Terrace View on Carters Terrace in Tinwald takes the title as Ashburton’s first purpose-built retirement village. It is set on five acres of land among peaceful, landscaped grounds and gardens, bordered on one side by the Ashburton River. The village has a variety of lifestyle and care options, including independent or assisted living in villas, apartments or studios, right through to full resthome, hospital or palliative care.
Assisted living: Bedroom.
They have studios, or one and two bedroom apartments along with three bedroom villa options which come with either a garage or parking space. There is also a communal lounge/theatre space, dining room, laundry facilities and a café / bar facility. All the rooms on site are modern, warm and spacious. Whether it be Terrace View’s quality meals and onsite services, or getting one’s health care needs met, Terrace View’s staff are second to none, and offer residents’ quality care right at their door. It’s just one more on-site option that gives residents – and their family members – peace of mind. Depending on the lifestyle option chosen, residents of the villas can keep their independent living in a secure property offering full kitchen facilities, living rooms and bedrooms for family visitors. Each villa has been professionally designed and the neutral décor is just ready and waiting for occupation. The apartment options offer the same security and freedom but in a smaller sized property. The apartments have also been designed to meet residents’ needs and care packages can be upgraded if those needs change. The studios also offer the same secure independence with a
range of service packages including 11 care suites providing a higher level of care. The Terrace View resthome and hospital has professional staff working in a modern and purpose-built facility. The large rooms come complete with ensuite and views of the grounds and gardens. The range of lifestyle options at Terrace View mean couples can remain close to each other in retirement if they have different health care needs. It’s just another bonus that gives some comfort for all concerned. As if the site and its facilities were not enough to prompt a call to Terrace View, the retirement village has another drawcard: at Terrace View, residency means no lawn mowing, maintenance or upkeep of the grounds or the property. That means more time to spend on other interests. The communal areas are a great way to keep in contact with other people and offer a facility for regular social activities. The lounge/ theatre area, with bar facilities, is also a great place to relax with others while catching up on local news, gathering for national, or sporting, events around the large communal television or to just sit and admire the fabulous garden setting and listen to the birds.

Shirley, Elaine, Garth, Keith, Rosy, Robert, Merran, Carolyn, Richard, Lenny, Trina, Emelia, Michael, Issy and Wayne would like to thank everyone for the amazing love, support and kindness shown on the devastating loss of our wonderful and much loved Tim. We have been overwhelmed by the support and expressions of love. Thanks so very much for the cards, baking, flowers, plants, gifts, photos, phone calls, meals and the very generous donations to the hyperbaric chamber. We were humbled and honoured by the huge crowd who attended Tim’s celebration of life and wish to thank Carol Gunn for her heartfelt and very real and genuine portrayal of our adored, unique and very special Tim. Thank you to everyone who attended Tim’s service, visited the house, supported us and still continue to do so. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your kindness and friendship and feel privileged that Tim was loved by so many wonderful people. Tim collected friends and surrounded himself with amazing people throughout his life, he touched many hearts and influenced many lives and he will continue to remain beside us in our hearts. Think and talk of him often with a smile and always remember what his life has meant to us all. I love my gorgeous Tim and always will. When it rains look for rainbows and when it’s dark look for stars.

Your Stars ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Not where you want to be? Your progress is good enough. It’s meaningful; it’s on time. Reinforce it time and again until you believe it. Any other belief will rob you of the opportunities of the moment. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Hiding your true feelings will only intensify them. However, when you look back on this day, you may be very happy that you kept some things to yourself. Timing is everything. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): If the fight inside your head is making you tired, get out of your head. Do something different. Get away. Travel. See something new. Let the world engage you and you’ll stop engaging yourself. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): It can’t be totally comfortable and new at the same time. New requires leaving the old; that’s a risk, and risk is inherently uncomfortable. Agree to be inconvenienced by life. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): Don’t worry about the whole night, the whole trip, the whole month/year/ life. Just worry about the next thing. Make the next right choice; then make it again. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Today is like throwing a party. There’s that moment before people start coming when you worry no one will. Then there’s the equally anxious moment when everyone’s there at once. You’ll look back on both with fondness. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): There’s a danger in thinking too large today. Break it all down into smaller chunks of time, effort and emotional investment. The future is made just like the past is made: one moment at a time. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): Is socialising a pain? An escape? A mystical art? You won’t know until you get out and start talk to people. Helpful and necessary ingredients include emotional courage, empathy and patience. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): One way to drive yourself to absolute frustration is to focus on what they “should” be doing. Obviously, there’s a disagreement of terms or intentions there. Instead, focus on you. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Where you want to be can’t be mapped with a longitude and latitude. Your destination is feeling, a state of mind, an attitude. Though you’ll never be able to run it on Google Earth, you’ll certainly arrive there. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): You chased it, and it got away from you. That was a long time ago. You’ve really grown since then. Try again. This time you’ll be quicker, smarter and luckier. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Because you’re a disciplined person, it’s not about picking and choosing the tasks that most appeal to you but about doing what you know needs to be done to get where you want to go.

“LOCHLEA LIFESTYLE RESORT IS ALL ABOUT INDEPENDENT LIVING AND HERE YOU CAN DO AS MUCH OR AS LITTLE AS YOU LIKE WHILE STILL ENJOYING LIFE AS YOU NORMALLY WOULD OUTSIDE OUR SECURE ENVIRONMENT. Some people believe that to live in a Lifestyle Resort such as ours means losing their independence. This is simply not correct. In our resort you will have your own space without any hassles. You are able to furnish your villa with your own furniture and personal items and decide how you wish to spend your days and with whom. The security of your villa is controlled by you and you should feel at home and absolutely secure in your environment. Some people are concerned that when moving away from their family it means that no one will be around to help when needed. At our Resort we have built in security measures designed to reduce the worry that often comes from living along. Features are in place to respond quickly in the event that you need someone to help you.
Some people also believe that moving to a place of independent living means saying goodbye to hobbies such as gardening. Our residents will tell you that they are more active now than when they were living alone. Residents are still able to look after their own gardens if they so desire and in addition to this there are numerous other activities that they can pursue. It is important to note that studies have shown that people who are active and engaged are healthier and happier. Activity programmes give all residents options and choices tailored to their specific needs, desires and lifestyles. They can also reduce the isolation felt when living alone.
