Group opposes lake water-take

Lake Hood developers and an Ashburton River watchdog group have locked horns over a proposal to alter water take consents that would allow more water to be taken from the river.

The Lake Hood Extension Trust is applying to Environment Canterbury to alter its water take consents because of concerns over potential for water quality, aesthetic and functional issues arising in low flow periods.

In the low-flow summer of 2013-14 the lake could not be used for recrea-

tional purposes for several weeks.

The trust holds two ECan-issued consents which govern the taking of water from the river to fill, flush and maintain water quality in the recreational lake.

Trust chairman Graham Kennedy said yesterday that as part of the $3 million the trust spent in three years on gaining resource consent to extend the lake, research was undertaken on “borrowing” further water from the lower Ashburton River on a non-consumptive basis.

The water would be returned about three kilometres downstream and there

would be benefits to the river, such as the water would go back to the river in a cleaner state.

Mr Kennedy said the water would still only be able to be borrowed when the river was above its miminum flow requirements.

However, Save the Rivers is not buying the trust’s interpretation of the abstraction.

Hospital a training hub

Not only is Ashburton Hospital undergoing a facelift, it is also moving from a service centre to a training hub for young health professionals.

Ashburton Hospital has become a training hub for up-and-coming medical professionals.

Canterbury District Health Board chief medical officer Dr Nigel Millar said eight registered medical officers have now taken up residence at Ashburton Hospital in order to undergo on-thejob training.

The eight RMOs, who came to town last month, included a mix of rural hospital medical registrars – doctors with more than four years’ experience – as well as second year junior doctors and one third or fourth year doctor.

All the positions were permanent and will be filled by resident medical officers rotating usually on a three-monthly training basis, Dr Millar said.

While there were no changes to the services provided to the people of Ashburton, the addition of staff provided a more sustainable after-hours’ roster for medical staff, he said.

It also allowed increased time to be spent on training and quality improvement initiatives.

“It moves Ashburton Hospital

from a service provision centre to a training centre, this ultimately will result in a more sustainable employment [and] development model for the future of the hospital and will benefit the wider community,” he said.

The addition of the medical officers, along with the changes to Ashburton Hospital’s management team, mean there are now no vacant positions at the hospital.

Late last year the management team underwent a shake-up following the departure of two senior employees.

Krunal Shukla was appointed to the position of finance manager following the resignation of Sue Sheerin. John Lyons, a former senior doctor, also stepped into the senior management team to take over from clinical director Scott Wilson.

The only remaining member was Jan McClelland, Ashburton and rural director nursing.

Prior to the appointment of Mr Shukla and Dr Lyons, the CDHB confirmed Bernice Marra would take on the newly-formed role of Ashburton Health Services manager.

Help is available in Mid Canterbury for parents who struggle to provide necessary school supplies for their children.

Schools use a number of different means including grants, school funds and community agencies to help families who are not able to provide necessities such as uniforms and stationery.

Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association president and Methven Primary School principal Chris Murphy said schools in the district occasionally had students who came to school without these items.

Phil Wheeler Most schools in Mid Canterbury were lucky because they received annual grants from organisations to support children who came from families that struggled financially, he said.

families that needed help.

“It’s not a huge issue at the school, we don’t make a big deal about it.”

There are also individuals who offered to help families in need, including a couple who donated a pair of leather shoes each year.

“The community knows there are people out there who struggle.”

Hampstead School principal Peter Melrose said if there were any families having difficulty his school will assist or refer them to an agency who could help.

“We will ensure they will get what’s needed.”

The cost of education over a

child’s lifetime can get expensive, so the school is mindful of not putting unnecessary costs on parents, he said.

Ashburton Netherby School principal Phil Wheeler said most children go to school with everything they need, but if there are problems the school will use the principal’s discretionary fund to help.

“We just make it easy for them.”

Longbeach School has not had any problems with parents struggling to provide school supplies for their children, but principal Neil Simons said if they did he would also use his discretionary fund.

Chimp having a baby Hamilton Zoo’s chimpanzee troop will soon have a new member, with female chimp Sanda expecting a baby. Thirty-year-old Sanda will give birth in mid-February.

The baby chimpanzee’s father is 22-year-old Luka. Hamilton Zoo director Stephen Standley said it’s a positive development for the zoo’s chimpanzee troop and the wider conservation programme for the species.

Social media plea A social media campaign yesterday saw Countdown bombarded with pleas from consumers to stop stocking caged eggs. The call prompted a response from the supermarket giant, which said it could not immediately commit to taking such eggs off the shelves as there was not a large enough supply of free-range eggs in New Zealand to meet demand. Animal rights groups Safe sparked the Facebook campaign, after Countdown’s Australian owner, Woolworths, pledged to go fully free range in its stores across the Ditch by 2018.

The group encouraged followers to go to Countdown’s Facebook page and post a message asking it to “drop all cage eggs”.

Rugby stars drop in on kindergarten

Children from Allenton Kindergarten spent several days preparing for a group of special guests who dropped by yesterday.

Ten members of the Crusaders rugby team visited as part of their community crusade around the district.

Head teacher Angela Moore said the children had been counting down the days and had decorated the building, worn red and black clothes, put face paint on and even baked the team a cake.

“The children and the community have been very excited about celebrating rugby with local heroes.”

More than 100 preschoolers, parents and siblings crowded into the kindergarten to play with the sports stars, take photos and get autographs.

Crusaders loose forward Jordan Taufua said the players really enjoyed spending some time with the children, many of whom loved rugby.

“It’s been fun, great to be able to play with the kids.”

Most of the team enjoyed playing with the toys more than the children, he said.

The group visited the kindergarten to launch The Great Jennian Crusade, a competition which gives Canterbury pre-schools the chance to win one of 12 Crusaders-themed bookcases. Four of the winners will also get a visit from a Crusaders player.

Community House move-in date a step closer

Community House’s new premises will be bursting at the seams with tenants come March.

The renovation of Community House Mid Canterbury’s Cass Street premises, once home to Work and Income New Zealand, is now only mere weeks away from completion.

Earlier this year the Community House Mid Canterbury Trust raised the last of the money needed to buy the Cass Street building once home to Work and Income New Zealand.

Now, with the refurbishment work nearly complete, Community House has designated a moving period beginning March 11.

The building, which will be officially opened in April, will boast 25 rooms including offices, two meeting rooms, a child’s play area, staff room and amenities.

Driscoll said work was tracking along well with painting now wrapped up and the majority of the carpet laid.

To help the relocation process along and lend a hand, a few strapping Crusaders stopped by

yesterday. The lads boosted efforts by moving furniture donated by local businesses into the offices which saved Community House staff a lot of time and energy.

“It was just excellent,” Mr Driscoll said.

All that is left to be done now is the electrical work, front porch as well as the building’s primary feature – a memorial to the victims of the Winz tragedy which will be located on the Cass Street side of the building.

Late last year Mr Driscoll called for donations for the memorial and said already the community had come forward.

Individuals as well as community groups, gardening groups, service clubs and local firms had all come to the party, he said.

The anchor tenant for the rental is Safer Ashburton, but already 19 other tenants have signed on, both permanent and temporary.

All Black captain-elect and fellow Crusader Kieran Read congratulated the Community House Mid Canterbury Trust yesterday for all of their hard work and presented them with a signed jersey.

Letter raises ire at meeting

Environment Canterbury commissioner David Caygill said he was “cross” about a couple of things in the letter.

These included Mrs Smith stating extending the increased minimum flow deadline from 2012 to 2023 “was disingenuous to a collaborative process with one-sided benefits”.

Mr Caygill said groups such as Forest and Bird needed to move on from seeing decisions of independent hearing panels in such a light.

The wording of a plea for urgent action on the Ashburton River raised hackles at an Ashburton Water Management Zone Committee meeting on Tuesday.

A letter calling for the establishment of a management group to advocate for river biodiversity and habitat, by Ashburton Forest and Bird chairwoman Edith Smith, was the subject of a lengthy discussion lasting about 20 minutes at the committee’s first meeting of the year.

Mrs Smith listed a wide range of threats to the river including continuing abstraction, weeds, loss of braided character, increasing four-wheel-drive use and predators, climate change, lack of ownership for issues affecting the river and lack of communication and co-operation in its management.

Mr Caygill is the Environment Canterbury appointee, while Mr Wilson is the Ashburton District Council appointee.

Mr Guthrie said he also had a few “grumpy moments” when reading the letter, while Mr Allen questioned whether the river was in fact rapidly deteriorating, saying that if it was he would be “really, really concerned”.

Committee members decided to ask Mrs Smith to attend its next meeting, in order to hear an update on progress in relation to the matters outlined.

Ms Field said it had been good to have the discussion, as the Ashburton River was a concern for members and had not been at the forefront of discussion for some time.

A woman who was convicted and discharged in the Ashburton District Court this week for misappropriating $1570 from Chertsey school did not work at the school as stated in Wednesday’s Guardian. The money was taken from the school’s Home and School Association’s PTA account.

This organisation has no financial association with the school other than as a fundraiser.

Boy fighting for life A 6-year-old boy was fighting for his life last night after his bike became pinned under a car as it left a driveway. The boy was biking along the footpath in Stewart Street, Raglan, about 9.45am when he collided with the car.

“Fire, ambulance and police staff arrived to find a 6-year-old boy and his bike pinned under the car, with the boy having suffered serious injuries,” said Waikato road policing manager Inspector Freda Grace. “A combined team have raised the vehicle and extracted the boy, who was flown by helicopter to Waikato Hospital.”

The male driver of the car was shaken but uninjured.

The Arthur Street campus was open from 11am to 2pm as a chance for people to discuss study options with tutors, tour the facilities and learn more.

CPIT Aoraki chief executive Kay Giles said as well as learning about different career paths, visitors were able to enjoy a free barbecue and a social media competition.

“The open day is a great opportunity for the public to see the course offerings provided by the new organisation.”

Ashburton will continue to be a no-go zone for electric cars, with no charging points planned in the area.

Charge Net NZ is talking to district councils around the country, hoping to spark interest among them in becoming part of a network of charging points.

While Timaru and Waimate have committed to have points installed before 2017, it is not on the Ashburton District Council’s radar, said chief executive Andrew Dalziel.

The council did discuss the option during its long-term plan debates and it could be raised again at next month’s strategic planning meetings, he said.

While the council might not have immediate plans for charging points, these could be

installed by the private sector and in some places petrol stations had taken up the option, Mr Dalziel said.

“Some councils are going there as part of their wider sustainability strategies, ie Wellsford Library in Auckland has a public electricity charging facility. They allow free charging with the costs met by the council.”

He believes the facility is more suited to a city environment, but said if there was money to be made from the points, private entrepreneurs might take the lead and provide the facilities.

For the council, another option could be to look at providing charging points as part of its feasibility study for a new civic building and library.

A van carrying seven people rolled over a bank in a crash south of Charleston, near Westport.

Emergency services were called out at 2.31pm yesterday after the van had rolled 10m down a bank on State Highway 6 about 10km south of Charleston, Southern fire communications duty manager Brent Dunn said. Police said all passengers were out of the van and there were no fatalities.

Armed robbery A security guard was robbed at gunpoint outside a Whakatane supermarket yesterday, police say.

The alleged robbery occurred about 11am outside Pak n’ Save on King St in Kopeopeo. No one was hurt, but an unconfirmed amount of cash was taken. Police believe more than one person was involved and at least one vehicle is linked to the incident.

A scene examination has been completed and police took witness statements.

Ashburton premises with automatic fire alarms are keeping their alarms in good working order, with only a handful having been charged for fire brigade call-outs.

Many large premises such as rest homes and businesses are required to have private fire alarm (PFA) systems, monitored by an alarm monitoring company.

While the alarms are made to detect smoke or heat, there are other things which can set them off, such as dust, insects or faults in the system.

As a matter of procedure the fire brigade will respond, sending a required two appliances to the scene.

False alarm call-outs make up about 18 per cent of the brigade’s approximate 400 calls per year, a proportion which has remained static over the past three years.

Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade chief Alan Burgess said the brigade would respond to two calls to premises for false alarm PFA calls within a 12 month period, with no charge to the owner.

However, for every subsequent false alarm call-out within that period, the premises is charged

Paperwork delays opening of after-school care programme By ruBy Harfield

Mt Hutt Elim Church’s new afterschool care programme Powerzone has been delayed due to paperwork.

The church has been organising the Oscar-approved programme since the end of last year following a high demand for an after-school care service in Methven.

Mt Hutt Elim Church pastor Mark Taylor said they had hoped to have it up and running by the beginning of Term 1 but it had taken longer than expected because of the large amount of paperwork involved in becoming an Oscar-approved programme.

“We’re certainly working on it.”

The paperwork includes creat-

ing policies, procedures, medical forms, enrolment forms and a staff code of conduct.

While this is a lot of work for the organisers, it is very important as everything needs to be up to standard, he said.

Because of the high level of interest in the programme they want to have it up and running as soon as possible, Mr Taylor said.

The programme will be run with the help of a qualified primary school teacher and will include afternoon tea, time for homework, a reading area and activities.

The service will be held at the Mt Hutt Elim Church and there will be a walking school bus from Methven’s primary schools.

“There’s certainly an incentive there, that’s why people have these alarms monitored and serviced so they are in good condition,” Mr Burgess said.

He estimated there had been fewer than 10 occasions in the past one to two years where Ashburton area premises had being charged the fee.

As well as PFA call-outs, false alarms can include a range of things such as people phoning in controlled fires.

The false alarm call-out rate for the brigade was nothing out

of the ordinary, and just part of everyday life for firefighters, Mr Burgess said.

“We are responding on the basis of it being a true call,” he said.

Call-outs for the brigade yesterday included a false alarm, to Holmslee Square, at about 8.05am. The building’s alarm had been triggered due to a fault in its system. It was an unmonitored alarm and as such the brigade was notified via a 111 call.

Other call-outs for the brigade yesterday included to a minor motor vehicle crash at the corner of Tancred Street and Chalmers Avenue shortly before 11am.

Registrations for a local free parenting course are filling up fast.

Presbyterian Support is running a 15-week training course, intended for parents of children aged three to eight-years-old starting next month.

Facilitator Torika Patterson said caregivers were also welcome, as long as they had children in their care for at least three to four nights a week.

Run on a Wednesday night out of the Sinclair Centre, the course offers practical step-by-step suggestions and help to handle everyday situations that parents face.

The first couple of sessions will focus on play and interaction.

It is about learning to be supportive and it is a great way to become aware of what your kids are interested in, Mrs Patterson said. “[And] about being there and being supportive and helping with their creativity.”

Other topics covered include consequences, time out and behaviours that can and cannot be ignored, she said.

In previous years the workshop had been very well received and Mrs Patterson said the same could already be said for this year.

Spaces for the course were already filling up fast, with 15 registrations received already and only five spots left to fill.

The workshop beings on Wednesday, February 24 and runs from 6.30pm until 9.15pm for 15 weeks.

Group opposes Lake Hood water-take From P1 Secretary Geoff Ackerley said in a letter to the Ashburton Water Management Zone committee this week that it was common knowledge the Ashburton River was over allocated, and that “no matter how well the application is dressed up, it is for further abstraction from the Ashburton River, even if it is only for a 3.7 kilometre stretch of it”.

Any adverse effect on a section of it had the potential to affect other parts, and could increase the risk of cyanobacteria, which occurred in low, warm water.

He said the trust was relying on research by only one scientist, and conveniently used reports that supported its position.

And while the Lake Hood Extension Trust does not believe the application needs to be publicly

notified, Mr Ackerley believes it should be.

ECan yesterday said through its communications team that the application from the trust had been lodged, but “we didn’t accept it because it was short on information required to process it”.

If the application was resubmitted, a decision would then be made on whether to publicly notify it.

Seminars to explain new funding scheme The first round of funding under the Ashburton District Council’s reshaped community funding scheme is under way.

Applications are now being sought for projects groups intend to run in the next financial year (from July 1).

The council has created a new structure that brings all of its grants under one umbrella.

Funding is now available over five categories – arts and culture; sports and recreation; economic

development and events; community projects; and natural and built environment. The natural and built environment category covers heritage and biodiversity grants and includes community facilities such as community and memorial halls, reserves and community swimming pools, for minor enhancements like painting or planting.

Applications close on February 29 with funding allocated in July.

For the natural and built environ-

ment grants only, there will be a second round of funding midyear.

Application forms can be downloaded from the council’s website and two information seminars will be held over the next two weeks for people wanting more information.

The seminars will be held in the council chambers in Baring Square East tonight at 5.30pm and next Thursday at noon and 5.30pm.

‘Humanity in danger’ Rising tension between Russia and the US, North Korea’s recent nuclear test and a lack of aggressive steps to address climate change are putting the world under grave threat, according to scientists behind a Doomsday Clock that measures the likelihood of a global cataclysm.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists announced that the minute hand on the metaphorical clock remained at three minutes-to-midnight.

The clock reflects how vulnerable the world is to catastrophe from nuclear weapons, climate change and new technologies, with midnight symbolizing apocalypse.

“Unless we change the way we think, humanity remains in serious danger,” said Lawrence Krauss, chair of the bulletin’s Board of Sponsors.

Krauss said the Iran nuclear agreement and Paris climate accord were good news.

But the good news was offset by nuclear threats, including tension between nuclear-armed states India and Pakistan, and uncertainty that the Paris accord will lead to concrete action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Forty bodies found in mass grave Iraqi forces have found more than 40 bodies, including those of women and children, in a mass grave in the city of Ramadi west of Baghdad, which they recently retook from Islamic State militants, officials said.

Interior Ministry spokesman Brigadier General Saad Maan said the grave in central Ramadi contained the bodies of civilians as well as police.

Video footage from the site shows local security forces and a small forensics team wearing face masks and digging with shovels.

Ramadi, the provincial capital of the sprawling Anbar province, fell to Isis in May, marking a major setback for US-allied Iraqi forces. Iraqi troops retook the city centre last month with heavy coalition air support.

Similar mass graves have been found in other areas liberated from the Isis group in Syria and Iraq. The extremist group has boasted of massacring Shiites and other opponents, often releasing gruesome videos and pictures of the killings.

Last month the UN said 16 mass graves had been found in the northern Iraqi town of Sinjar, where Kurdish forces pushed out Isis in November.

Seatoun on Johansson watch The Wellington suburb of Seatoun is abuzz after Scarlett Johansson touched down in the capital – and it seems she’s come with a protective entourage. Bombings kill at least 20 in Homs Multiple bombings struck a government-run checkpoint in the central Syrian city of Homs yesterday, killing at least 20 people and wounding over a hundred amid intense political jockeying ahead of UN-backed peace talks scheduled to begin in Geneva on Friday.

The office of the UN envoy for Syria said it sent out invitations for the talks, but with just three days to go, the opposition is still undecided about whether it will attend.

One opposition official suggested the Saudi-backed opposition delegation may boycott the talks.

Khawla Mattar, a spokeswoman for Staffan de Mistura, said the envoy would not make public the numbers and identities of the invitees until his office gets “feedback from the invited parties” — a sign of the delicacy of his task.

The talks are meant to start a political process to end the conflict that began in 2011 as a largely peaceful uprising against Assad’s rule but escalated into an all-out war after a harsh state crackdown.

The plan calls for ceasefires in parallel to the talks, a new constitution and elections in a year and a half.

Movie to prove a point A British filmmaker made censors sit through a 10-hour movie about paint drying just to prove a point. Charlie Lyne used Kickstarter to fund his 10.5-hour film Paint Drying, “a single, unbroken shot of white paint drying on a brick wall”. He shared the news on Twitter that it had finally been approved by censors with a “U” rating, meaning it contained “no material likely to offend or harm”. During an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit, Lyne said censors were only allowed to watch nine hours of material per day, so getting his film approved would have taken two censors two days to watch.

He also admitted he hadn’t seen the entire film himself.

I

t might have been just one more wet summer’s day, but in Ashburton yesterday the gloom lifted considerably when a large contingent of the Canterbury Crusaders arrived in town.

The boys in red spread themselves around town, visiting kindergartens, the BNZ, helping out at Community House and giving local youngsters a few ball handling tips.

It was enough to gladden the heart of anyone who chanced upon the happy hordes.

It’s great to see professional sportsmen doing more than just training and playing sport.

These guys are our local heroes, many of them national heroes and for youngsters, the chance to get up close and personal with the people they admire, is something they won’t forget.

Sportspeople are now a very marketable commodity. At times being public property must seem a chore – another day, another round of smiling, signing autographs and answering the same old questions. But it’s rare for the cracks and boredom to show; most of them treat every public event like a special event.

For them there is of course a payback for doing the public thing and for getting it right. If they’re smart, particularly the players who may never be top liners, they’ll build a public persona that will see them earning big dollars well into retirement.

Sport is now a business and for those at the top it’s a job, but it’s not a job for life. Injury, failing to perform or just someone better and usually younger snapping at your heels, and the dream can be over in just one match.

But that’s where the value of building your image and personality comes in.

With every public appearance sportspeople have an opportunity to build a brand. The better the brand they build while they’re at the top, the greater their opportunity post sport, to continue making a living out of being public property.

There are plenty of examples around of those who played it smart and did the publicity hard yards, they’re now living off their glory years. There are also examples of those who simply played the game and then were left wondering where it had all gone when the lights went out.

National wants to help its powerful mates in big business and play a part on the world stage, but we all will pay more for pharmaceuticals and become more subject to the dictates of foreign corporations in the hope tariffs and restrictions against New Zealand farm products will eventually be reduced.

o John Key fancies another term as Prime Minister. Are we surprised by that? I doubt it. He tells us he enjoys the job.

If you are happy at your work then why look for an alternative until it becomes unavoidable?

In his case, of course, his future in his present lofty position depends on us, the voting public.

His length of time at the top is thus not his decision but ours.

That he should inform us of his long-term ambition at least 18 months before it will next be put to the test, has surprised us all, guru and guesser alike.

Does that smack of arrogance or a genuine desire to tell the people what is on his mind and how he sees the future, the nation’s and his?

No doubt, such an announcement coming so far ahead of likely change is destined to galvanise the Opposition, appalled at the prospect of having Mr Key still Prime Minister post 2017’s general election.

The National Party would then have more time in which to pick off and ridicule Opposition policies. At its very least the public airing of Mr Key’s plans can be seen to be the latest instalment of his desire to be up-front and honest with the electorate.

Experience has shown the usually much put-upon public likes that. As a canny politician the PM has long since worked that one out. What’s more and also relevant, the National Party has for so long relied on their leader’s almost phantasmagorical popularity that the need to train a successor has been put so far back on the the proverbial “back burner” that there is no one around either up to, wanting or willing to challenge the permanently, apparently untouchable, John Key. Even so, despite both appearance and belief by some past holders of the top job in Aotearoa, New Zealand of their indispensability, I doubt whether the current holder is among them. He, as they say, “knows the score”, that there is a use-by date for all premierships, his included, which tells him he cannot consider himself to be in office in perpetuity.

Will our prime minister, John Key, be granted his wish and be elected into his fourth term in office? times leaders rise and fall like the tide in Lyttelton. Despite all that deep philosophising, however, it seems Mr Key feels he has another election victory in him from which position he may be able to choose his own moment finally to leave the political field, with a potentially popular successor in place to replace him well before the election of 2020.

To achieve this desired outcome, and in the unlikely event of his appealing to us to give him advice as to how best his ambition can be achieved, we would, I feel sure, be happy to offer him some worthwhile opinions!

We might start, for instance, by suggesting to the PM, that at all costs he avoid getting his hands on any within-reach, thus irresistible, pony-tails, the interference with which can lead to serious questioning of intention and common sense.

Also on the black list would be any further plan to participate in a radio stunt involving a cage.

John’s recent association with such an activity, raised eyebrows to dangerously high levels throughout the nation. There was even talk of “lost marbles” and other comments of incredulity.

Then there has to be some concern over Mr Key’s propensity to forget important details of e-mails and other forms of communication within short hours of reading or being informed of them.

confrontations with eager beaver reporters, who have found that the relatively still young PM could honestly have such a selective memory hard to credit.

Mr “Paddy” (to his friends, and to those wanting to create a knowledgeable impression) Gower and his colleagues have always looked particularly perplexed when the PM has been in his famous “aw shucks, you can’t expect me to remember every message that comes my way” mood, with Tova nearby and sternly unamused.

In the immediate future the Prime Minister faces a testing challenge, two significant and simultaneous events, which are likely to be noisy and aggressive occasions with the potential to lead even to civil unrest, as well as perhaps, in the end, influencing Mr Key’s chances of a fourth term in office.

They are, of course, Waitangi Day – this year to be officially held on February 8 – and the signing of the controversial, and endlessly complex, Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) at Sky City in down-town Auckland on February 4.

At Waitangi, sadly, there will be the normal scuffles and inflammatory behaviour led by the various generations of the Harawira family and their friends and, as well, because of the locally perceived “anti Maori” flavour of the TPPA, probably an extra layer of violence and hostility, and a refusal to allow the PM onto the

Treaty grounds.

It will be another sad demonstration of the divisiveness of our “national day” at its showpiece location, despite the day being celebrated warmly and with good humour at many less prominent places round the country.

Before that will have been carried out the actual signing of the TPPA, very close to Waitangi Day itself. In an outburst of frothy rhetoric the Labour leader, Andrew Little, has berated the Government over the “unseemly proximity” of these two events which he categorises as “deliberately offensive”.

But then he finds himself in a legendary “cleft stick”, because, overall, the Labour Party supports much of what is in that agreement, which has taken many negotiators and 12 long years to thrash out.

There is still more to say on this issue but not time for it here.

The doyen of our political commentators, Chris Trotter, thinks it would have been wiser for Mr Key to have chosen the tranquil backwater of Millbrook, near Arrowtown as the location for the signing of this explosive agreement rather than that hotbed of social protest, the constantly volatile Auckland City.

Perhaps, Mr Key has deliberately selected the urban rather than the rural to show who’s boss.

And, what’s more, that he intends to continue to occupy that position until 2017, and as long after that as he sees fit.

Road tolls need to be justified: PM

BY PAUL MCBETH AND FIONA ROTHERHAM Prime Minister John Key said Auckland Council would need to “justify” introducing congestion charges or motorway tolls to help fund the region’s transport infrastructure, including the $2.5 billion City Rail Link, which the government has helped bring forward yesterday.

In his first speech of the year, the Prime Minister provided certainty to funding the rail project previously labelled “Len’s train set” which will allow it to start two years earlier, in 2018, than government funding will start, in 2020.

The government will work with Auckland Council to finalise details of how the project costs will be shared, though Key later said that a 50:50 split was likely to be fair. How the rail link will be owned and managed is another issue, given the rail network is currently owned by the government.

Key also announced plans to fast-track the East/West Connection between the southern and south-western motorways which

is estimated to cost over $1 billion. The announcement follows the Reserve Bank calling on the government to increase its infrastructure spending to help boost the economy and reduce pressure for lower interest rates.

Key said he didn’t think there was a need for a stimulus package, given robust business confidence, despite Fitch Ratings downgrading its outlook for GDP growth this year to 2.4 per cent.

“We’re not doing this to be stimulatory. This is about future growth opportunities,” Key said.

The Auckland Council has been investigating how revenue from congestion charges could help meet the city’s estimated $10 billion to $15 billion transport funding shortfall over the next 30 years, which includes a second harbour crossing.

Key said Auckland Council had a number of options to meeting its share of the infrastructure bill including more borrowing and selling assets and would need to convince Aucklanders of the merits of congestion charging. “I’m not the mayor of Auckland and

A crowdfunding campaign to keep a pristine South Island beach in public ownership has been boosted by a $20,000 pledge from Spark New Zealand.

Christchurch man Duane Major set up a Givealittle page this week allowing Kiwis to pledge money to buy the 7ha private beach, in Abel Tasman National Park’s Awaroa Inlet. The beach, which includes 800m of golden sand and is surrounded by native bush, is on the market for $2 million.

As of noon yesterday just under $290,000 had been promised by 4528 donors. That did not include Spark’s $20,000 pledge.

Spark managing director Simon Moutter said $2m was a “big ask for a small country”.

“We wanted to chip in and do our bit, and we’re encouraging other New Zealand businesses to join us. New Zealand only has a couple of weeks to secure this beautiful beach – otherwise the

opportunity will be lost.”

GiveaLittle is owned by The Spark Foundation, a charitable branch of Spark New Zealand.

The company has also offered legal and other procedural support, should the $2m be raised and the campaign move to the

next stage of tendering for the land, Mr Moutter said.

The Department of Conservation has expressed interest incorporating the site into the national park.

NZ falls in corruption rankings New Zealand has fallen down the league table of the least corrupt nations, with access to official information and discussion about environmental policy both issues according to the chair of Transparency International New Zealand.

With a score of 88 out of 100 for 2015, New Zealand dropped to fourth least corrupt nation globally, behind Denmark, Finland and Sweden in Transparency International’s Corruption Percep-

tions Index. Having topped the index for two consecutive years with the least corrupt public sector, New Zealand was toppled last year by Denmark. Australia’s score fell from 80 to 79, and its ranking dropped to 13 from 11 in 2014.

Chair Suzanne Snively said there were steps that could be taken immediately to re-establish New Zealand’s exemplary reputation for a trusted public sector.

Snively told BusinessDesk that there was a current issue with ac-

cess to official information, where New Zealand has historically been strong.

“We were leading in terms of the Ombudsman Act years ago, but we haven’t resourced it,” she said.

“We don’t prioritise the importance of having access to information in the way that has been done in the past.”

The Official Information Act has come under scrutiny recently with media organisations reporting.

Farmers wanted for groundwater research project Farmers with property east of State Highway 1 and between the Ashburton and Rakaia rivers are required to take part in a three-year research project that aimed for an improved understanding of groundwater quality.

Funded by Ministry for Primary Industries’ Sustainable Farming Fund (SFF) and a collaboration between local farmers, businesses, industry groups and Environment Canterbury, the project will be managed by the Foundation for Arable Research (FAR).

Its purpose is to provide the most up-to-date and accurate information available on water use and quality in the area for the regional council’s planning and decision making process.

FAR CEO Nick Pyke said Environment Canterbury and the Ashburton Zone Committee will soon begin the sub-regional planning process for the Ashburton-Rakaia area in 2018.

“This aims to weigh up the impacts of farming on water quality and supply, and consider if any changes may be required to regulations concerning farming activities,” he said.

Historical data will be collected from a range of sources along with new data collected through

Nick Pyke monitoring wells in the east Ashburton water users’ area.

“This will fill gaps in data and provide a dataset, which will aim to better represent the current situation in the identified area, enabling farmers to develop a better understanding of high risk zones and how nitrate levels vary seasonally, sub-regionally, by depth, and over time,” Mr Pyke said .

Information provided will allow farmers to take an informed approach to discussion with Environment Canterbury on the

development of actions that will meet not only the environmental needs of the area, but the economic and social needs of businesses and the community also.

While the project is receiving SFF and industry funding, farmers are being asked to contribute as well.

Mr Pyke said the level of monetary support required from farmers will depend on the number of property owners who are willing to support it, and the number of wells sampled. However he did not expect it would be a costly exercise.

The SFF is contributing $42,400 to the project, and industry organisations providing another $18,000. This leaves an estimated shortfall of $20,000 spread over the three years of the project; around $6700 per annum.

“Good support from landowners would result in supporting payments of not more than $100 annually,” Mr Pyke said.

Wells used in the project will be selected as representative of the whole area, and neither the location of individual wells or the origin of individual data sets will be divulged without agreement of the property owners.

■ VINTAGE CAR CLUB

A vintage rally T

here are now only two sleeps to go for those of us looking forward to taking part in the annual rally being staged by the local branch of the Vintage Car Club this Saturday.

The rally is one of the major events on the club’s calendar.

Historically it has attracted a large number of entries.

Club captain Neville Ross says this year is no exception, with at least 50 vehicles entered by local members and others coming from as far afield as Oamaru and Culverdon.

Neville says planning for the rally has kept him, his wife Joan and a dedicated organising committee on their toes, but it’s all worth it knowing everyone taking part will have a great time.

And the club is happy to share some of that fun with members of the public, who are invited to come along to the start of the rally, look at the vehicles, watch field tests and then see the entrants leave the Vintage Car Club grounds on Maronan Road at 30 second intervals commencing at 10am.

The rally route has been mapped out by Neville and Percy Ralston and the long and short of it is that there a long and a short.

longer than the other – have been planned for Saturday, giving drivers the opportunity to pick a drive best suited to their vehicle.

Each route ends up at the same mystery destination.

But knowing how clever Neville and Percy can be, getting there is sure to be interesting and possibly challenging.

The oldest vehicle taking part on Saturday will be a Cadillac which celebrates its 110th birthday this year.

Newer vehicles from the mid-eighties will also be there along with others of varying types, styles and ages.

Some of the vehicles have not been seen on local rallies before.

There are several reasons why those of us taking part are looking forward to the rally, it will be great to catch up with other enthusiasts and good to see a lot of interesting vehicles.

And of course it will be fun to go for a drive in a nice car.

In our case Roger Hart and I

will be motoring in his Triumph TR 6 which is a fabulous car.

Roger does the driving and of course does it very well.

I’m the navigator.

We’ll be going on the long route, hopefully exactly as long as that route should be and no longer.

Call us old fashioned but you won’t find a GPS unit in the TR on Saturday, just the good old tried and trusted instructions, pen and clipboard will do us just fine!

Now before you start thinking that probably means the headline of the next column could be “post card from Timbuktu” we’ve done okay in the past.

We’ve always made it to the correct rally destination, usually

pretty much on track and about on time.

And what’s more we’ve always made it home, not necessarily on time!

We have to admit the field tests can be a bit of a challenge, and it saddens me to say my navigator’s skills or to be precise lack of them in that department are a bit of a handbrake to Roger.

But the field tests add to the fun especially for spectators and that’s a real drawcard for anyone planning to come and have a look at the start.

There is some serious silverware at stake and on Saturday we have to relinquish our tenure on the trophy we won last year.

It’s a fun trophy, cleverly designed to indicate what it represents – hard luck!

The trophy has lived in our home for the last six months after spending the previous six months at the Hart residence.

Yes, we’re surely going to miss it, but unlike other trophy winners we won’t actually be defending our award, or as Roger so wisely says “we are happy to surrender it gracefully, give it a change of scenery and let someone else enjoy it”.

Don’t get us wrong, we don’t wish any sort of misfortune on anyone, but we had our bit of hard luck last year and we don’t want to monopolise it.

Roll on Saturday – just two sleeps to go until we see a line-up of great vehicles.

ormula One drivers are calling for a new safety device to be installed in their cockpits from 2017, hoping the so-called “halo” will prevent the lethal threat posed by flying debris.

Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA) chairman Alexander Wurz said this week that his members wanted “swift implementation” of the design initially suggested by Mercedes - a bar attached to the car that curves around the driver’s head and is supported in front by an upright strut.

Formula One has been testing various ways of improving head protection, weighing up the pros and cons of the halo compared with completely closed canopies, an option that some people fear could trap the driver in the event of a crash.

The halo is designed to be removed quickly in such cases.

Its backers say it does not significantly obstruct the line of sight.

“The research the FIA experts have done is very thorough and the process has brought forward a clear solution,” said the Austrian, who retired as a driver last year and now works on safety with the sport’s governing body.

“Now the drivers feel it’s time to implement the extra protection at the latest in 2017,” he told the BBC. Improving head protection became a priority after the deaths last year of Briton Justin Wilson, a former F1 racer who suffered head injuries from debris in an IndyCar crash, and Frenchman Jules Bianchi.

Bianchi, Formula One’s first driver fatality in 21 years, died in July, nine months after suffering severe head injuries at the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix when his car skidded off and hit a recovery tractor.

Wurz said that backing from the drivers should make the introduction of the halo “a formality”.

Golf Section Our golf section travelled to McLeans Island Golf Club Sunday January 17 to play in the Chartered Clubs, Brown Brothers Tournament. Weather wise it was a wet weather gear day out.

Some players enjoyed the conditions with some good combined team scores, eventual winners of the Brown Brothers Trophy were Hornby Club 143 points with our men’s team of Rodney Harris, Brent Smith, Wayne Smith and Lindsay Jackson coming in second with a combined score of 136 points.

Best individual women’s scores over the field were Madeliene Smith 38 stb c/b Kay Fox 38 Trish Cates 33 stb c/b Joan Undy 33.

Joan welcomed 66 members to the January meeting with a minutes silence for 2 members, Nola Lovett and Jennifer Stewart who have passed away recently.

Birthday greetings and 2 visitors were welcomed. Audrey gave an outline on the Name Change of Probus that is in process. Probus first started in England in 1963 and the first club in New Zealand in 1973.

We will keep the name until a new name has been decided on. The Movie for this next is “Suffragette” at the Regent Theatre at 11am on February 3. Vera Smollett was the mini speaker.

She told of growing up in Oamaru on a Dairy farm where they milked cows, then moving to Dunedin where she worked and met Russell, moving to Clutha and went farming. Raising 2 children and has 2 grandchildren.

They sold their farm in Mosgiel in 2003 and moved to Ashburton. Jane Wright from “Hospice Mid Canterbury” was our main speaker. A Trust has been setup to enhance the quality of life for all those people in Mid Canterbury district dealing with life-limited illness and bereavement.

There is counsellors available to provide care, home support to carers and shopping etc. A Mobile massage and Reiki to help relax and soothe. Books are available for all ages dealing with illness. Their office is in Tancred Street.

Creative Fibre The first meeting for the year was held on January 15 at which about 30 women attended.

After a short business meeting we looked at general topics. The first item out for discussion was would we be interested in displaying and selling articles we make to let the public know what we as a group do. We would need to hire a shop for a week and volunteers would be needed.

February 15 bring spinning wheels and Richard Ashford will speak about maintenance on wheels March 7 a trip to Leo Ponsonby’s carding business and a visit in Christchurch to Creative Fibre Shop Show and Tell table: Baby wear – 13 singlets, a pink poncho, blue cardigan, striped jersey, 2 pair bootees and a wrap around.

Adult: a kitchen hand towel, 4 knitted hats, crocheted hat, 2 teddies, 5 pair socks, mauve spun wool, knitted squares and a jacket.

Ashburton Golf Club Well what a wonderful weekend just passed. The Jim McKenzie memorial trophy went to the top team of Kevin Smith and Terry O’Reilly, well done boys.

Then on Sunday a big crowd witnessed some amazing golf which culminated in, the weekend warrior “honest” Bruce Day picking up the Property Brokers Shootout.

Ashburton Bridge Club The Ashburton Bridge Club recently hosted a holiday tournament at the Lake Hood lakehouse – a lovely venue and a very different setting for the 64 participants. There were some very challenging hands played, and, as in this example, the distribution of cards had a huge impact on possibilities.

With a meagre 21 points between them East/West can make slam – 12 tricks in either Clubs or Spades, but they could very well not even bid to game contract, let alone a slam.

Both South and West will pass opening bids leaving North to open 1 Heart with 12 points. Now for East’s bid – most will employ the Intermediate Jump Overall and bid 2 Spades showing a 6 card suit and a range of 11-15 points.

Whether South chooses to raise to 3 Hearts or not, West has a problem – 10 points could be all that is needed if West has the maximum 15 – the slightest interest from West would encourage East to bid 4 Spades.

A full attendance of members attended the December meeting at Panther Rock Restaurant, Mayfield. After enjoying a lovely meal a small meeting was held.

With the exchange of Christmas gifts, good wishes and a catch-up chat, members then crossed the road for a look through “Overflow” a pre-loved item store.

Ashburton Domain is the venue for our February meeting where we will partake in a picnic lunch.

Ten members, also two husbands and our “Buddy”, Jude, met at the Stables for our Christmas Lunch. Our gratitude to Jude was extended to her on her good advice and her being with us to share a pleasant afternoon.

The theme for this year “Nurturing the Nation” and “Project: Adopt” were discussed, then afternoon tea was served with Christmas cake.

Our February Picnic meeting will be held at the Tinwald Domain.

General, the Ashburton A & P tray and Bay entries were discussed, the Bays were all well thought out with a lot of effort put into each entry depicting shades of one colour. Wakanui were placed second and Margaret Cullimore gained a special for her knitting.

Our meeting concluded with a delicious Christmas Fare afternoon tea and members were wished a happy Festive Season.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Christmas decorations have been put away. School holidays are almost at an end. Stationery, new shoes and uniforms to be bought ready for the start of the new school year. Gardens are producing copious amount of produce and kitchens start to steam with the annual task of preserving. And it has rained for a few days, bringing relief for many households!

WI will be resuming for some in January with an AGM meeting whilst others will commence in February. So, what will 2016 bring for Mid-Canterbury Federation? Founders Day on February 21 is to be held in the domain starting with a short celebration service at 11am. With any luck the National Executive Committee initiative of providing a bench on a public space will be in situ. A shared picnic lunch afterwards will allow attending members to catch up with friends and news.

March 18 2016, “Autumn on Parade with the Merino Story” is to be held at the Ashburton Event Centre at 1.30pm.

Entrance tickets ($20) will be available from your WI and non-members are most welcome. Come and see what is on offer for this winter’s fashion collection from the well-known Hinds clothing store.

Mid Canterbury Federation AGM will be on April 1 at the Senior Centre. Your WI Secretary will have the agenda with notification of competition entries. The Federation Committee needs new members. Are you willing to help organise events and promote the WI in the Ashburton area. It is great fun and it is only for a year!

Richardson runners spread far and wide Graham Richardson is spreading his forces this weekend.

The Matamata trainer will have three runners at his local meeting on Saturday while Strada Cavallo and Lauberhorn will be sent south for the Gr.3 Wellfield Desert Gold Stakes (1600m) at Trentham.

Richardson’s pair will be genuine hopes in a capacity field for the $70,000 Desert Gold.

Strada Cavallo was the runnerup in the Gr.1 1000 Guineas at Riccarton in the spring and recorded two respectable efforts at the El-

lerslie Christmas carnival.

The Alamosa filly settled back in the Gr.2 Eight Carat Stakes (1600m) and ran on late for sixth, recording the third fastest final 600m.

It was planned to ride her closer to the pace in the Gr.2 Royal Stakes (2000m) and she ended up in front.

“That hadn’t been the plan,” Richardson said. “We had tried her in front before and it didn’t work.

“She’s a good filly and we are

happy with her but things haven’t gone her way the last couple of starts.”

The Gr.1 Wellfield New Zealand Oaks remains the main target for Strada Cavallo and she is likely to have her final lead up to the Trentham classic in either the Gr.3 Little Avondale Lowland Stakes at Hastings on March 2 or the Gr.3 McKee Family Sunline Stakes at Ellerslie three days later.

Strada Cavallo was bred by Nearco Stud, which is also part of the syndicate that races the filly

and Nearco also bred Lauberhorn, who is raced by the Challenge Syndicate.

Lauberhorn, a daughter of Swiss Ace, has won two of her last three starts. She won a three-year-old maiden at Avondale in December and beat 13 rivals in a Rating 65 1400m at Tauranga at her last start.

Between wins, she was unplaced in a Rating 65 at Ellerslie, after drawing the outside barrier in a 14-horse field and being held up for a run in the straight.

“She’s really tough and keeps giving,” Richardson said.

Chris Johnson rides Strada Cavallo on Saturday and Mark Hills is sticking with Lauberhorn.

Douro, Snapshot and Jubilate will be Richardson’s runners at Matmata.

Snapshot, who lost his unbeaten record when runner-up to Passing Shot at Te Rapa at his last start, tackles the BNZ Partners 1300 and Jubilate will contest the Norwood Farm Machinery Centre 1200.

Juniors aiming for top times

Jennian Homes Ashburton Swim Team’s junior contingent will be hoping to repeat the form of their senior counterparts at the Swim Canterbury West Coast Champs in Timaru this weekend.

The seniors took an impressive haul of 12 medals from the Canterbury Champs in Dunedin last weekend, and coach Shane Jones is confident that the 10 juniors can also impress against some of the region’s finest young swimmers.

“I think we’ll go pretty good, we’ve been training since the beginning of the year and did a fair bit of work before Christmas,” he said.

“We’re just looking for good tidy swimming, and as many PBs (personal bests) as we can put on the board.”

Jones said the seniors’ performances in Dunedin were impressive, and the meet served as a good gauge ahead of the New Zealand Age Group Championships in 12 weeks’ time.

“It was fairly early into the season, but it was a good start,” he said.

“We put some good times up, and it gave us a foundation of where we need to go from now to the New Zealand Age Groups.”

Kerber, Konta into semi-finals Angelique Kerber and Johanna Konta advanced to the Australian Open semi-finals yesterday on another day when the integrity of tennis was part of the tournament conversation.

The first Grand Slam of the season has been overshadowed from the start by media reports alleging that tennis authorities had failed to thoroughly investigate evidence of match-fixing.

Yesterday, just as Kerber began her 6-3, 7-5 win over two-time champion Victoria Azarenka in the quarter-finals, the governing bodies of tennis announced they will commission an independent review of their anticorruption unit to restore “public confidence in our sport.”

In announcing the review, ATP Chairman Chris Kermode said the reports had “caused damage to the sport,” which compelled the major stakeholders in tennis — the International Tennis Federation, ATP and WTA tours, and the four Grand Slams — to take quick action to address the issue.

A BBC and Buzzfeed News report which coincided with the start of the Australian Open alleged 16 players — all ranked at some stage in the top 50 — had been flagged for being involved in matches where suspicious betting activity was detected. No players were identified.

Philip Brook, chairman of the Tennis Integrity Board, said while the reports “did not reveal anything new, it was widely written about and has caused damage to our sport.”

With that going on in the background, Konta went on court and beat Chinese qualifier Zhang Shuai 6-4, 6-1 to become the first British woman since 1984 to reach the semifinals of a Grand Slam.

“It will be my first match against her (Kerber),” Konta said. “She’s top 10. She’s an incredibly decorated and successful competitor and player. I’m just going to go out there and bring to the court what I can.”

“When I was down 2-5, I was actually playing more aggressive,” Kerber said. “I think the key from this match was that I was playing and I won the match, she didn’t lose it.”

It ended a strong few weeks for Azarenka, who won the Brisbane International and hadn’t dropped a set.

“My footwork didn’t have enough, my shots didn’t have enough,” Azarenka said. “I felt I did a little bit too many unforced errors in the key moments.”

Six-time champion Serena Williams and No. 4-ranked Agnieszka Radwanska will meet in the other women’s semi-final today.

The independent review announced in a news conference at Melbourne Park, earlier reported by The Associated Press, will be funded by the Tennis Integrity Board, which oversees the anti-corruption unit set up by the sport in 2008 to combat match-fixing. It will be led by Adam Smith, a London-based lawyer who is an expert in sports law.

Kermode acknowledged that the announcement of the review helped keep the topic of match-fixing prominent in and around the tournament action.

“It has been hard on the Australian Open, no question about it,” Kermode said. “Obviously the report was timed to hit at this point, try to create as big a story as possible.

But (Australian Open organisers) have been unbelievably supportive of the actions we’ve taken. They agree we had to hit this head-on now even though it was during the championships.”

Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin is expected to miss four to six weeks of action after breaking his hand while throwing a punch, the NBA team said on yesterday.

The five-time NBA All-Star, who has missed the past month with a torn left quadriceps tendon, suffered the latest injury while hitting one of the team’s equipment managers outside a Toronto restaurant, according to the Orange County Register.

“This conduct has no place in our organisation and this incident does not represent who we are as a team,” Clippers owner Steve Ballmer and head coach Doc Rivers said in a joint statement.

Tall Blacks’ tough road Basketball New Zealand is close to confirming several friendlies for the Tall Blacks before their last chance Olympic qualification tournament.

The Tall Blacks have been drawn to a six nations qualifying tournament in Manilla in July, alongside France, Philippines, Turkey, Senegal and Canada. Only the winner of the tournament earns a spot at the Rio Olympics. Basketball NZ boss Iain Potter says the Tall Blacks will travel to Europe for several warm up games before the tournament.

ODI weather worries Fingers are crossed over the possibility Napier’s big-match cricket wet-weather bogey will return for the second of the Black Caps’ three One-Day Internationals at McLean Park today. After more than a week of hot weather since the last rain in Napier on January 20, there were heavy downpours yesterday. Large puddles have formed on the McLean Park outfield while there was flooding in the nearby suburb of Onekawa.

Big month for Lyttle

The year may be less than a month old, but softball umpire Heath Lyttle has already officiated at the South Islands and a national tournament.

Lyttle umpired at the under-15 boys’ and girls’ South Island Championships in Alexandra, before travelling north to Christchurch to take charge at the national under-17 boys’ tournament.

Lyttle was selected to umpire the under-17 boys’ semi-final between old foes Auckland and Canterbury, which played out to an extended nine innings for a 3-0 Canterbury win.

“On day three I was given the biggest game of the tournament, Auckland versus Canterbury,” he said. “It was probably the biggest challenge I’ve had in my umpiring career.”

Lyttle said high pressure clashes can be challenging, but has made the most of the advice and support of senior umpires.

“It’s high pressure, you’ve got to make a decision within a second, especially when it’s a heated game like the one I had,” he said.

“I look up to the people that are world umpires that coach me, they teach you how to stand up to those situations.”

Liverpool beat Stoke 6-5 on penalties to reach the English League Cup final yesterday, ensuring Klopp a shot at silverware in his first season at Anfield. Joe Allen was the match-winner in the second leg, curling the decisive spot kick into the top right-hand corner — not that Klopp knew it.

“I was nervous,” Allen said.

“There was confusion about who would take the seventh penalty but I picked the right corner.”

The Ashburton College 1st XV made the most of a rugby skills session with 10 Crusaders at the EA Networks Centre Stadium yesterday morning.

The session was due to take place at the Ashburton Domain, before being moved indoors due to the dismal weather.

Crusaders Kieran Read, Israel Dagg, Matt Todd, Jordan Taufua, Tim Boys, Rich-

ie Mo’unga, Scott Barrett, Jone Macilai, Mitchell Dunshea and Sean Wainui passed on some of their knowledge in a one hour skills session with the college players.

All Black Read said it was an enjoyable workout for the Crusaders contingent and the college students.

“These guys are at a pretty high level skillwise, but we’re just wanting to impart a little bit of knowledge on them,” he said.

“It’s cool, rugby is a giving game, and you

want to give back when you can, you see how much it means to these kids.”

Crusaders also travelled to Banks Peninsula, North Canterbury and Timaru, spending the day lending a hand to community projects, and Read emphasised the importance of visiting the regions.

“It’s really important for us as a team, these are our real true fans and you appreciate that when you come out,” he said.

“It’s important for us to connect with

them, this (Mid Canterbury) is a big part of the Crusaders region, so it’s nice to come down and see what the locals are up to.”

With the rain refusing to let up throughout the session, Read was pleased to be under shelter at the EA Networks Centre; a facility that impressed the All Blacks captain-elect.

“This is awesome, it’s the first time I’ve been here, you guys have got something special down here, it’s great,” he said.
