Park sell-off in the wind? BY SUE NEWMAN
SUE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
A slice of land in Argyle Park could be sold to fund future development at Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre. As the Ashburton District Council looks to develop green fields around the new multisport stadium and pool, councillor Darryl Nelson believes the cash it needs for the work could be found among assets the coun-
cil already owns. “We’ll need the money to do this and I’m suggesting this could be an option to perhaps divest ourselves of some of our assets. Argyle Park is too big I believe, and we could sell off some sections at the top end,” Mr Nelson said. The park covers 40 acres and is divided into three sections. The eastern and central blocks have been developed and are
well used as sportsfields, while the northern section until recently was leased to a market gardener. It has now been sown in grass but is not a sportsfield. “Commonsense tells me if we sell off some of this land then we could do something at the EA Networks Centre, but we have to have the money to do this,” Mr Nelson said. The sell-off suggestion did
not gain any support from council open spaces manager David Askin. He sees the top end of the park as an integral part of the overall Middle Road–Farm Road green space. “One of the important things about Argyle Park is its size, how often do you have a big space like this, it’s 40 acres. We can’t have too much open space.” There could be a stumbling
block selling part of Argyle Park, however, as the land was re-zoned from freehold to open spaces in the council’s last review of its district plan, a change that not all councillors are happy with.
