A last-minute extension has seen Bike Methven secure its target goal, which will now go towards the collective tender for the Mt Hutt Bike Park land purchase. Late last week the situation was looking uncertain as just 73 generous backers had pledged $54,841.48, of the $105,000 target. But when crowdfunding website Givealittle shifted the deadline to today at 4pm, it resulted in a final flurry of support that pushed donations over the line. By yesterday afternoon, that figure had jumped to an astonishing $108,530.60 pledged by 235 supporters from across New Zealand and the globe

Bike Methven president Daniel Burgess said the support had been overwhelming. While local businesses and the mountain biking community had been behind the project, last minute promotion at the national champs in Cardrona harnessed interest, and the Loose Riders Christchurch group, produced a video encouraging support. “It’s incredible, absolutely phenomenal,” Burgess said. “The response has been out of this world.” However, while the group’s target has been reached, Burgess emphasised the
work continues. “A huge thank you to everybody who has donated from far and wide, but it’s important that although we reached the target, the collective tender still needs to be successful,” he said. “Certainly, if anybody is still interested in getting involved in the project, Bruce would still love to hear from them. “Bike Methven was to raise money so we could become part of the collective tender, now the tenders close on March 2 so we’re in waiting mode. We have our fingers and toes crossed.”
