Giant inflatable to boost stadium use

A climbing wall might be off the immediate agenda, but a huge inflatable playground might be in for Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre.

When complex manager Steve Prescott presented his budget for the next financial year to councillors yesterday, he put a new project on the table – a playing-court size inflatable that can be installed in just 30 minutes. It will make perfect use of the stadium in quieter times and will provide a new activity for primary school-aged children, he said.

The inflatable will come at the expense of the promised climbing wall however, but this could be a delay rather than a deletion.

Councillor Neil Brown wants both.

The community had been consulted and made it clear a climbing wall was wanted.

“The climbing wall was a great initiative, this is a great initiative, why not do them both?” he said.

An sharp increase in stadium use during peak hours would have limited the time the climbing wall could be used, Prescott said.

The rubber ducky Mill Creek dash is on again

The ducks are ready, their owners have all but been found and now it’s all down to the way the water flows.

The 12th edition of the Hokonui Phat Duck Duck Race will be held in Mill Creek, next to the main road, tomorrow night and interest in the event has been as huge as ever, according to organisers.

The annual event sees hundreds of people gather on the banks of the creek outside the Phat Duck Brew Bar and Kitchen for the night’s activities in which rubber ducks provide the entertainment as they race their way down the creek to the finish line for their respective owners.

Drawn through promotions across shows hosted by Hokonui Radio’s two resident DJs, Phill Hooper and Peter McQuarters, 110 ducks will make their way down the course during two heats tomorrow night before a best-ofthe-rest race for those who suffer defeat and a grand final for those who advance through the heat stage. More than $7000 in prizes up for grabs.

“We’ve had a lot of interest this year,” said Carol Johns from Hokonui Radio.

“The Facebook posts have been getting heaps of comments and we’ve had a lot of entries for each duck that’s been up for grabs.”

Anyone who has missed out on a duck through the promotions is still able to be a part of the action with a number of ducks set to go to auction before the race with all proceeds from the sale of those ducks going to the Mid Canterbury Mountain Bike Club for the construction of their new track.

Fires flare again in Nelson Seven families were evacuated and others ready to leave at a moment’s notice as a new fire spread in the Tasman region yesterday.

Seven helicopters were called out to tackle the blaze near the Moutere Highway, the Tasman-Marlborough Fire Area brigade announced.

Sixteen fire appliances and two bulldozers were also at the scene.

Crews had slowed the momentum of the fire and it was about 5

hectares but were still working to contain it and stop it from spreading.

A 5.15pm update yesterday said the fire had been stopped at the foot of the gully where it first started.

Authorities also said last night that the solid progress meant the incident management team believed no further evacuations in the area would be needed.

Kaye has principals backing her plea

Mid Canterbury school principals are calling for the Government to slow down in its introduction of sweeping changes to the education system.

National Party spokesperson for education Nikki Kaye brought her Future of Education roadshow to Ashburton on Tuesday night, hosted by Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon, and about 30 attended the public meeting.

Kaye emphasised the consultative approach she was taking as the Government approached its biggest shake-up in the education system for 30 years.

The Tomorrow’s Schools Independent Taskforce has recom-

mended a wide range of changes, including about 20 regional hubs taking over most legal roles of school boards, capping outof-zone enrolments, replacing intermediate schools with junior colleges, and replacing the decile-based funding system with a targeted approach.

The taskforce has deemed that the free-market Tomorrow’s Schools system introduced in 1989 has led to a flight of students from poorer schools making it harder for those schools to serve the disadvantaged students who remain.

Kaye acknowledged there was much in the recommendations which was worthy, but there were concerns.

Education could not be a onesize-fits-all approach, and while she was not arguing for the status quo and not opposed to a hub model as such, there were many good things that occurred with board of trustee involvement.

“They (hubs) can’t replicate that community connection and that emotional investment,” Kaye said.

It was a big shift for hubs, with an average of 125 schools each, assuming all the legal responsibilities and liabilities currently held by boards of trustees. There were many questions, such as what would the legal status of boards of trustees be, and whether the 20 hub areas would be suitable for distinct communities.

right amount of time to ensure parents, teachers and board of trustees members were aware of the changes, and that the introduction of any new initiatives was a robust and thorough process.

“With this massive reform, why are we on a deadline of April 7?”

And then the taskforce had to report back to the Minister, Chris Hipkins, by April 30.

Kaye’s emphasis on not politicising the issue was appreciated by the principals, board of trustee members, parents and students who attended. And principals agreed on the importance of the government taking its time to ensure any new initiatives would work well for students.

Livingstone was sceptical about resourcing of the new proposals, drawing attention to what would be required for each hub to look after teaching and learning in 125 schools.

“Oh my god, it will never be there,” he said.

Traditionally any education proposals were introduced without the correct resourcing, for example, when national standards were introduced his school only ever managed to send two of its staff to relevant workshops.

Other concerns brought to Kaye’s attention from the floor included a plea for political parties to work together on reducing poverty, and on paying teachers more.

Elderly housing questioned

The future of Ashburton’s council-owned elderly housing units could be under threat in the wake of tougher new insulation and ventilation rules for rental properties.

The Ashburton District Council owns more than 100 units that are rented at lower than market rates to people with limited income and assets. Many of those units are old and many will not measure up to new standards enforceable from July.

After hanging in the balance late last year, Mid Canterbury Children’s Day is set to celebrate it’s 10th year this weekend.

The future of the hugely popular event was uncertain in September last year with those behind the event putting out a public plea to get more people on board the organising committee to help with the event.

But the necessary people luckily came out of the woodwork and spokeswoman Alice Czerski said it was all systems go for this Sunday’s edition of the event.

“We’re excited to be back for another year,” she said.

“And we’re offering up everything that we’ve done in the past, there’s no major changes, just the tried and true.

“But there’s a little bit of something for everyone.”

The day, which runs from 10am on Sunday morning until 2.30pm,is completely free for children, with food, stalls and activities available across the Plains Museum grounds.

Yesterday district councillors took their first look at next year’s budget, and council commercial manager Colin Windleborn said they needed to be aware that changes to the Residential Tenancies Act would have major financial implications for the council.

While the housing units were self supporting, the 2019/20 budget did not include provisions for upgrading work that will be needed.

Most of the units did not have ventilation or underfloor insulation that would meet the new

standards and the cost of upgrading would be significant, Windleborn said.

Other changes to the act such as allowing tenants to do alterations to properties and to keep pets would also have implications for the council, he said.

“Landlords will have to make a decision at some stage – are they in or out – because if you don’t comply there’s a $4000 fine.”

That decision-making process included the council, Windleborn said.

Chief executive Hamish Riach said the changes meant the council needed to review its in-

volvement in the elderly housing sector.

And the issue of its requirement to consider community wellbeing also had to be thrown into the mix, he said.

“The question is why are we involved in housing of this nature. How we’re meeting the social needs of our community is as much a question.”

The council needed to take a comprehensive view of what was needed in terms of elderly housing, Riach said.

“We need to pause, reflect and make a conscious decision on where we’re at.”

East Street crash Emergency services were called to the scene of an accident between a car and truck at one of the busiest points of the day on East Street on Tuesday night. The accident occurred near the South Street intersection around 5pm. As a result the southbound lane was blocked for some time. A police spokesperson said there were no injuries.

■■PURPLE POPPY DAY

Remembering the animals that served in our wars A dedication service to honour Purple Poppy Day and a World War I soldier Thomas Hartnell-Stone, who had a love of horses and served on the battlefront of Gallipoli, was held last weekend.

The service, which was held at the Canterbury high country working farm of Washpen Falls on Sunday, involved family members of Hartnell-Stone as well as the charity group which works to raise awareness of post-traumatic stress injury (PTSI).

The event coincided with Purple Poppy Day – a day dedicated to the millions of horses, donkeys, mules, dogs and pigeons lost during the Great War of 191418 and during subsequent wars.

Hartnell-Stone was a trooper with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles Regiment, and Washpen Falls was the home he dreamed of returning to.

The New Zealand Mounted Rifles Charitable Trust (NZMRCT), which raises funds for people suffering PTSI, also use the day to bring awareness of the huge role horses and other animals played in World War One. Family of Hartnell-Stone have erected a war horse sculpture in memory of the trooper, who spent significant periods of his life in Gallipoli, a peninsula of Turkey that was the location for a significant campaign of World War One. He served in Gallipoli around 1917, and later returned to try and tidy up the mess left after that battle between opposing forces on the peninsula, including the burying of the dead.

Trooper Hartnell-Stone was sadly tasked with destroying horses left in Egypt at the end of the campaign. One of the horses destroyed was his own.

NZMRCT president, Mark Appleton, said members of the mounted rifles trust, who attended the service, proudly saluted in honour of Hartnell-Stone.

“Purple Poppy Day has been designated as a day to remember animals of war,” he said.

“Personally I would like to see it develop as animals of service, covering police dogs, police horses, anything that is related to service. Police dogs die in service.

Noise issues at motorbike park The Ashburton District Council and Ashburton Motorbike Park committee are working together to address noise issues at the Trevors Road Motorbike Park, after community concerns were raised with the council.

Council staff met with members of the committee earlier this month to discuss concerns that noise generated by users at the motorbike track is disrupting other members of the community.

“There is a shared agree ment between the council and committee that we need to work together in finding a positive solution for everyone,” said council chief

executive Hamish Riach.

“While we acknowledge that this facility is a great asset for our community and provides a safe place for riders to take their bikes, we also need to consider the effects this activity may, unintentionally, be having on other members of the public.”

“Our initial discussions with the motorbike park committee were very promising and we will continue to work with them to find a positive way forward.”

The motorbike park was established 10 years ago by local community groups, volunteers and council as a dedicated facility for local motorbike enthusiasts.

It was intended to provide a purpose-built facility that would encourage riders to use the park, rather than ride in areas that would have negative impacts on the environment and natural habitats, especially for migrating birds that nest around the Ashburton River.

Population growth in the district in recent years has seen more families moving nearer to this facility, and concerns have been raised with the council about noise pollution in the area.

Discussions between the council and committee are continuing.

Funding package for gifted learners announced The Government has announced a $1.27 million funding package for gifted children.

The funding will be used in part for “one-day schools”, where gifted learners get together one day a week for classes aimed at challenging them.

The restoration of funding for gifted children’s education was agreed in the coalition deal between Labour and New Zealand First.

Associate Education Minister and New Zealand First MP Tracey Martin made the announcement at MindPlus East, a one-day school for gifted learners hosted at Riverina School in Pakuranga, Auckland.

There are currently 450 children enrolled in 34 classes nationally.

There are an estimated 40,000 gifted learners in New Zealand.

“Six extra teachers have already joined the one-day school team so far this term, to meet the growing

demand,” Martin said.

“Remote communities are seeking more classes, and the new funding has allowed one-day schools to strengthen their infrastructure and prepare for growth.

“Gifted learners and notions of giftedness are diverse, both within and across cultures, and so the package of supports we’re offering is not a one size fits all.

“This new package will support gifted learners and those with exceptional abilities. It will increase the range of opportunities for gifted learners to build on their strengths and aspirations, to experience success, wellbeing, and to have access to better support and connections.”

The package also includes expanded online learning modules, new awards for school-aged learners, a programme of events, experiences and opportunities for gifted learners and better guidance for teachers.

Trump arrives for summit US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un have both arrived in Vietnam on the eve of their second summit at which they will tackle how to implement a North Korean pledge to give up its nuclear weapons.

Trump flew into the capital Hanoi on Air Force One. He had left Washington o on Air Force One flying eastwards and made refuelling stops in England and Qatar.

Kim arrived by train after a three-day, 3000km journey from his capital, Pyongyang, through China.

He completed the last stretch from a border station to Hanoi by car.

The two leaders, who seemed to strike up a surprisingly warm relationship at their first summit in Singapore last June, will meet for a brief evening one-on-one conversation, followed by a dinner, at which they will each be accompanied by two guests and interpreters, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told reporters.

They will meet again the next day, she said.

Their talks come eight months after the historic summit in Singapore, the first between a sitting US president and a North Korean leader.

In return, Kim would expect significant US concessions such as relief from punishing sanctions and a declaration

He got a red-carpet welcome with honour guard, military band and fluttering North Korean and Vietnamese flags.

Kim’s sister, Kim Yo-jong arrived with him.

Roads were closed with Vietnamese security forces in armoured-personnel carriers guarding the route to the city’s Melia hotel where he is staying.

Vietnamese authorities have been tight-lipped about the summit and have yet to an-

nounce where the two will meet.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who had arrived before US President Trump, met Vietnamese Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh for talks.

Trump told reporters before he left he and Kim would have “a very tremendous summit”.

Tweeting earlier in the week, he stressed the benefits to North Korea if it gave up its nuclear weapons. “With complete Denuclearisation, North Korea will rapidly become an Economic Powerhouse. Without it, just more of the same.

Chairman Kim will make a wise decision!” Trump said.

Nigerian president takes lead in election President Muhammadu Buhari has taken an unassailable lead in Nigeria’s election race ahead of rival and former vice president Atiku Abubakar.

Official and provisional results show Atiku can no longer catch up in the race to lead Africa’s largest economy and top oil producer.

With results from all of Nigeria’s 36 states announced, Buhari leads top opposition challenger Abubakar by 3.9 million

votes.

His supporters have begun celebrating outside party headquarters in Abuja.

But the main opposition party demanded an immediate halt to the ongoing release of results by the electoral commission until data on voters who took part was made available to all the competing parties.

Atiku’s party said the tallies so far were “incorrect and unacceptable,” while Buhari’s

party said the opposition was trying to discredit the election.

The event - Africa’s largest democratic exercise - has also been marred by violence in which at least 47 people have been killed since Saturday.

More than 260 people have been killed since the start of the campaign in October.

Observers from the Economic Community of West African States, the African Union and the United Nations appealed

to parties to wait for the results, expected later this week, before filing complaints.

Buhari, 76, is a former military ruler who took office in 2015 and sought a second term with pledges to fight corruption and build infrastructure.

Atiku, 72, had said he would aim to double the size of the economy to $US900 billion by 2025, privatise the state oil company and expand the private sector.

Fatal landslide at illegal gold mine

Soldiers uncover mass grave

Indonesia’s disaster agency says at least one person is dead after a landslide at an illegal gold mine on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.

The incident occurred overnight on Tuesday, with more than 60 people estimated buried. At least 13 people have been rescued from the landslide by workers and villagers working on the muddy hillside.

The collapse occurred at the site in Bolaang Mongondow, North Sulawesi.

“When dozens of people

were mining for gold at the location, suddenly beams and supporting boards they used broke due to unstable land and numerous mining shafts,” disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.

The cause of the landslide remains unclear.

The central Indonesian government has banned such small-scale gold mining, although regional authorities often turn a blind eye to the practice in remote areas. With little regulation, the mines are prone to accidents.

Soldiers in Belarus have unearthed the bones of hundreds of people shot during World War Two from a mass grave discovered at the site of a ghetto where Jews lived under the Nazis.

The grave was uncovered by chance last month on a construction site in a residential area in the centre of Brest, near the Polish border.

Soldiers wearing white masks sifted through the site with spades, trowels and their gloved hands to collect the bones. They also found items such as leather shoes that had not rotted.

Dmitry Kaminsky, a soldier leading the unit, said they had exhumed 730 bodies but couldn’t be sure how many

more would be found.

Some of the skulls bore bullet holes, he said, suggesting the victims had been executed by a shot to the back of the head.

OUR VIEW

Budgeting for our district’s future L

et the games begin, even if it’s only just a little bit.

It’s budget time for the Ashburton District Council and our mayor and her councillors, and with that comes a great responsibility to make the decisions that are right for the people of our community and in doing so ensure that the cost to those very same people isn’t too great.

But, as we encroach ever closer on the upcoming elections later this year, the potential for earning some brownie points will become obvious for our elected members of council as they look to confirm their positions leading into the day where we, as a district, decide who is going to represent us for

the next term.

The smart operators around the table will have already seen this opportunity as a good one to get the ball-rolling.

It’s an opportunity to stand up and pledge that the decisions being made are for the people of the Ashburton District, just as they should be.

But it’s the ability to do that in

such a manner that it enhances one’s popularity and standing amongst constituents that will really appeal to our councillors.

It really does become their time to shine.

Expect to see a lot of comment about how good something is for the community or how much the community desire and or need something during the budget discussions. Some will take the reins with this drive more than others and instantly become more vocal – a good result for everyone involved.

They’ll flex their muscles, set out their agendas and sing from their own hymn sheet for the coming months and ensure that their

prominence is noted.

And while it might appear to be a little under-handed, that kind of accountability and questioning about decisions, particularly those as important as budget discussions, is a great thing for the community.

It will ensure that the best decisions are being made and that they are being made for the right reasons.

The people of the Ashburton District and the impact a decision or vote might have on them will be at the forefront of everything that slips across the table.

Yes, that’s the way it should be.

And for many, it’s the way that it always is, the real difference is that

we are now going to start hearing and seeing more of it as the voices start rising to try and get heard in the rush to be noticed.

No one has come forward and really stated their intentions for October, so we are not all that much more wiser as to who will be in the mix and whether someone is going to put their name forward to go head-to-head with Donna for the top the job.

But, as the months whittle away and the day gets closer, you can expect those individuals to start making their intentions known and although indirectly, debate and discussion around the existing table might just be the best place for them to do it.

The day the sun shone on Methven

ethven Adventures’ brand promise for the Opuke Thermal Pools and Spa complex, “Sourced from the mountains, powered by the sun” was especially fitting as the sun shone down on Methven when Minister Shane Jones came to Mid Canterbury with good news.

It was incredible to stand alongside Minister Jones and one of the original founders of the project, Dave Dynes, as a $7.5 million allocation was announced.

I daren’t repeat what Dave said as the shock of the amount set in, but it made us all laugh, and was a fantastic moment to be part of.

This coalition government recognises the importance of investing in tourism, job opportunities and environmental sustainability through the Provincial Growth Fund.

The fund was launched at the end of last year – a crucial step toward achieving the goal of planting at least one billion trees by 2028.

Led by Te Uru Rakau, Forestry New Zealand, the fund provides $118 million for simple and accessible grants to landowners and organisations looking to plant trees.

It’s an ambitious target, but brings with it the huge opportu-

nity to revitalise our regions and create real economic, social and environmental benefits across the country.

The coalition government is solidifying its partnership with farmers to help them extract more value from their businesses because we recognise the significant contribution they make to the wellbeing of New Zealand and our economy.

Bad year for farmer deaths

The death of 17 farmers last year for a return to average fatality rates has agriculture leaders urging them to take safety precautions seriously.

On average, 17 people die in the farm workplace each year nationally and last summer almost 550 farmers suffered injuries serious enough to require at least a week off work.

A Gore farm machinery company was fined $239,063 in the Gore District Court this week after inadequate repairs to a tractor resulted in a worker receiving a fractured vertebra and fractures to her arm and injuries to both legs in 2016.

WorkSafe’s investigation found that Agricentre South failed to ensure the tractor had fully operational brakes.

Many other incidences result in deaths and injuries through no fault of another party.

The Agricultural Leaders’ Health and Safety Action Group (ALHSAG) says farmers also need to accept individual responsibility for the sector’s poor health and safety record.

ALHSAG general manager Tony Watson said the health and safety performance was unacceptable.

He said nobody wanted to see anyone injured on farms and consumers, communities and regulators expected farmers to do better or face the threat of greater regulation.

“Farmers can take simple steps to reduce the chances of things going wrong. Safety protection is a no-brainer and not enough farm-

ers are using the right equipment to stop people getting hurt.’’

Watson said tractors had safety frames and farmers should be insisting that quad bikes come with the same protection.

“Farmers do need to consider if quad bikes are the right vehicle for the right job.’’

He said farmers should use seatbelts fitted to tractors, utes or side-by-side vehicles.

“A seatbelt could well stop the driver getting ejected from the vehicle if it rolls – you just need to watch a crash test dummy video

to see this for yourself.”

In 2017 farmer deaths were at their lowest from workplace accidents since 2009 and injuries were also declining.

However, fatalities returned to their average last year, disappointing agri-leaders.

Watson said there had been a spate of farm workplace incidents in recent months.

“This period, going into autumn, is often a time when there are some big jobs to do, which often means using large vehicles or having contractors on farm.

So, it’s a good time to think about health and safety. Farmers should think about the jobs ahead and what the risks might be.’’

The “crazy’’ weather this season has created another hazard with long grass hiding normally easyto-see obstacles and ruts.

Beef + Lamb New Zealand chairman Andrew Morrison said some farmers had stepped up and made health and safety a priority on farms, but the sector needed to lift its game further.

“The agriculture sector has a problem with health and safety.

We may be the world’s best farmers, but we have a terrible track record of looking after ourselves and each other on the farm and this has to change.”

The large fine ordered by the courts on Agricentre South followed reparations of $103,459 last year to the injured farm worker.

“Vehicle service industries must ensure diligent workmanship, systems and practices in the work that they do to prevent injuries to users,” said WorkSafe head of specialist interventions Simon Humphries.

PGG Wrightson first-half profit plunges 99 per cent PGG Wrightson’s first-half profit plunged 99 per cent as it booked an $8.7 million loss on the seeds business it is in the process of selling and operating profit from the businesses it is keeping sank 24 per cent.

Net profit attributable to shareholders for the six months ended December fell to $140,000 from $18 million in the same six months a year earlier while earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (ebitda) from continuing businesses fell to $17.8 million from $23.4 million.

Wrightson was coming off record earnings in the 2018 financial year.

“While this result is back on the previous year it is slightly ahead of first-half operating ebitda for the rural services businesses for the 2017 financial year,” chief executive Ian Glasson said in a statement.

“The factors impacting performance have been felt across the rural sector and we have confidence that we have held, and in some cases grown, our market share,” he says.

Glasson says he’s confident the sale of the seed business to Danish co-operative DLF Seeds for $434 million will settle in the near

future and so that business has been treated as a discontinued operation in the accounts.

The sale is awaiting Overseas Investment Office approval and the completion of regulatory filings in Uruguay and Wrightson is planning to distribute the about $120 million cash proceeds to shareholders.

Glasson is forecasting full-year ebitda will be $25-30 million, similar to 2017.

“Late last year, we advised that while our rural services business-

es had been trading solidly for the first six months of full-year 2019, we signalled that it was likely the half-year result would be behind the same period last year,” Glasson says.

“That prediction has proven to be accurate. This softer result was largely due to a later start to spring sales and a delayed recovery following an unseasonally wet period in the last few months of 2018 across the country,” he says.

Many eastern and inland parts of the South Island recorded dou-

ble their normal rainfall for that time of year and those wet conditions favoured milk and beef production which increased 6 per cent, largely because of strong pasture growth.

“In contrast, wet growing conditions in most regions have delayed pasture renovation and the establishment of both arable and winter feed crops. These wet conditions were felt across most of our rural services businesses, impacting the sales mix,” and some spending was delayed, Glasson says.

The result was hurt by costs relating to a defective spray supplied to Wrightson and resold to fruit growers. While fruit growers were fully compensated, the compensation paid to Wrightson fell about $1.8 million short of what it actually cost the company, he says.

The outlook for the rest of the 2019 financial year is “somewhat mixed”, Glasson says.

“Given the weather-affected spring we’ve had, there should be some pent-up demand for agricultural inputs to come through this coming autumn and spring.

Milk, beef and particularly lamb prices are strong versus longterm averages, suggesting that

farm profitability should remain robust,” he says.

“Horticulture continues to go from strength to strength” and the Ministry for Primary Industries expects it to be the fastest-growing export sector with revenues up 12 per cent for this financial year.

Countering those positive factors, farmer confidence surveys reflect a degree of pessimism and much of the country has been drier than usual recently, particularly Taranaki and Tasman, Glasson says.

Mycoplasma bovis remains a risk factor for the beef and dairy sectors and global facts such as Brexit and the China-United States trade dispute could potential disrupt New Zealand’s exports.

“On balance, we are cautious for the remainder of the year.

Weather and commodity prices will continue to be risk factors for the business, particularly during the months of May and June which are important contributors to the earnings of our livestock business.”

The board has decided to pay a fully tax-paid first-half dividend of 0.75 cents per share, down from 1.75 cents last year. – NZME

Over 80,000 cattle culled since M. bovis outbreak

Just over 80,500 cows, heifers and other cattle have been killed nationally for the cause to wipe out mycoplasma bovis.

Mid Canterbury is among the hotspots for the cattle disease and its farmers have seen their fair share of herds destroyed since it was believed to be first sighted in 2015-16.

Animal culling of both infected and non-infected animals in herds identified with M. bovis is one of the main thrusts of eliminating the disease.

The Government committed to a phased eradication last May with dairy and beef industry groups.

There are still 23 infected properties in the South Island and seven of them in the North Island, split evenly between dairy and beef farms.

The full cost of eradication over 10 years is projected at $886 million.

Of this, $16m will be loss of production and borne by farmers, and $870m is the cost of the response, including compensation to farmers.

The Government will front up with 68 per cent of this cost and DairyNZ and Beef + Lamb New Zealand will pick up 32 per cent

of the bill. Restricted place notices preventing cattle or goods movements from infected farms and blocks, or those strongly suspected to have the disease, have been issued to 60 farms, including the 30 infected properties.

have received cattle from infected properties and 367 are under surveillance.

Since the response began 454 properties have been released from movement restrictions.

Of the 749 claims received from farmers for compensation 460 of them have either been completed or received part payments.

Nearly $48 million has been paid so far for compensating farmers for disease costs including for herds destroyed.

At the last count 287,477 tests have been completed by the laboratory team The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) maintains that the disease has been restricted to one

source. Farmers were told last week that a single recent incursion remains the most likely scenario for the outbreak.

MPI also put an end to rumours circulating that there is more than one strain of M. bovis.

A ministerial stakeholder update said the rumour had been “considered and discounted’’.

Jetstar ups ante on cheap flights Jetstar isn’t going to relinquish its position as New Zealand’s most affordable airline without a fight.

Following on from Air New Zealand’s announcement yesterday that it was cutting its regional air fares, Jetstar has now announced that it will beat any comparable flight by 10 per cent.

“When you’re shopping online for flights, if you find a flight with another airline, or a Jetstar flight on an eligible third party website that’s cheaper than you can get on Jetstar.com, we’ll beat it by 10 per cent,” said a statement yesterday from James Stafford, the manager of New Zealand sales at Jetstar.

This clearly sets up a price war between the airlines and consumers are set to benefit.

After substantial media hype, Air New Zealand announced that its price cuts would make 750,000 regional flight seats available a year for less than $50.

The national carrier has revealed cheaper fares on 41 domestic routes in what is the biggest shake-up of prices in more than a decade.

Fares between Tauranga and Auckland will start at $39, and flights from Tauranga to Welling-

ton at $49.

Subtract from this a further 10 per cent discount from Jetstar and those prices could potentially drop further.

“Not only will it be even more affordable for locals to explore the rest of New Zealand direct out of Blenheim, these new fares will

help bring more of the benefits of tourism to the area by encouraging visitors to discover everything Marlborough has to offer,” Levermore said.

Air New Zealand’s new flights are already available for purchase and apply from March 25.

Eftpos surveys on their way

By Aimee Shaw New Zealanders could soon face an additional step when checking out at their favourite retail stores. This comes as UK-based Fintech firm TruRating starts rolling out surveys disguised as part of a payment transaction.

Appearing on eftpos terminals, the surveys designed by the firm asks one question, from a pool of five, to rate an aspect of the store experience from 0 to 9.

Retailers are coming on board because of the potential insights that can be gleaned from these surveys.

Take, for instance, the fact that New Zealand and Australia shoppers, if greeted by staff on entry to a store, spend on average 20 per cent more than they otherwise would.

This insight came directly from one TruRating survey.

Other insights show a positive shopping experience for New Zealanders depends largely on value for money offered in stores, and that Wednesday is the day New Zealand shoppers are “most happy”.

TruRating recently rolled out its technology to a handful of New Zealand stores, including to Kathmandu, New Balance, Bendon and Nike following a trial period last year.

A handful of other local brands will deploy the technology in the first-half of the year.

In Australia, around 100 retailers use it.

Dylan Berrington, TruRating’s Australia and New Zealand manager, said the technology would increasingly pop up in local stores as more retailers deploy the technology. He said it helped retailers

gauge how they are performing on the customer experience front.

Feedback is used to track consumer sentiment and replaces the need for mystery shoppers and old-school receipt feedback surveys, he said.

“There’s a real opportunity for New Zealand retailers to improve that overall in-store experience, particularly in this day and age where you have international businesses launching into market, H&M and Zara, all those key brands – it’s really important for New Zealand retailers to understand what their customers are experiencing and create better experiences.”

Globally, less than 1 per cent of all shoppers provide feedback, Berrington said.

The company claims to have an average 88 per cent response rate, the equivalent of nine out of 10 people opting in to give in-store feedback.

Colleen Ryan, partner of consumer behaviour insights firm TRA, said the challenge with such technology was ensuring the data

accurately represented customer experiences.

“How do you determine whether the people who do answer it are a representative sample of your customers that day? Because what you may get is all of the grumpy people, all the people who have time on their hands or you may get all the people who have had an exceptionally bad, or good, experience,” Ryan said.

“As a reporting mechanism on overall customer experience it can be very misleading. Although people go into it saying they are going to identify pain points, suddenly it gets used as a reporting mechanism, such as percentage of people that are happy with experience, and that’s when the sample does matter.”

She said questions could irritate shoppers if they were not thought to be relevant or perceived as “self-serving”, and in turn affect the shoppers’ overall experience.

Retailers should not underestimate the power of observation, she said.

Ashburton Bowling Club Results and achievements over the last week have been, at the club the Ladies drawn Triples Margaret, Judie & Anne won on the day. In the Saturday roll over Milner & Mervyn won with 2 wins.

At Hampstead in the Friday Triples John, Jo & Alistair managed a second with three wins. Then again at Hampstead on Sunday in the J Lowry Cup singles knock out post section, going out on the first round were Gavin, along with Roger who had three shots on the head lost to Jeff who put down the draw shot of the day.

Benny won his first game then going down to Brentton in the next round in a close fought game. This put Brentton into the final but lost to Brent Mayson, Well done to Brentton in making the final. Members we have the Harry Lee in house tournament on Thursday March 7 at 12:30pm check your book for details.

Ashburton Creative Fibre The craft market will resume on March 2. The next Rosebank visiting day will be Tuesday March 12.

The annual bus trip on March 4 will be to the Redruth Recycling Centre leaving the carpark at the Racecourse Road Hotel at 9am and returning approximately at 5pm. Please wear closed footwear.

Lunch will be at Caroline Bay, bring your own lunch.

Heading for home the plan is to stop somewhere and have afternoon tea at the Temuka pottery shop and a look around the shop before heading back to Ashburton.

Think about entries for the A&P show in the theme of the enchanted garden using your own yarn. On March 27 there will be a demonstration of simple weaving 5pm to 7pm at the Art Gallery. Craft day at the Plains is on March 15. The next spin in is on April 1.

Ashburton Dahlia Circle The monthly meeting of the Ashburton Group was held in the Tinwald Hall on Tuesday February 19. The 2nd table show was also displayed. Great to see so many healthy blooms.

The Dahlias are at their best right now as long as they can get access to water.

Results were shared by several members. Novice section: Best Bloom won by Heather McEvoy.

Intermediate section: Best Bloom John Hoogweg, Best Vase 3 blooms Brian Glassey.

Open section: Best Bloom Joyce Read, Best Vase Alistair Davey.

Champion of Champions: Alistair Davey’s 3 bloom vase of Rural Reita. This was one of his own seed raisings.

Alistair also went to the national show in Gore last weekend, where he received many trophies with his impressive blooms. Congratulations!

The Dahlia Circle are now focused on the Combined Show with Canterbury Group here on Ashburton Sunday March 3, hall open for staging 8am and judging commences at 10.30am.

Diane, as a medical practitioner, led a very busy Doctor’s life delivering health care to all comers under many conditions and situations. Jim, a Presbyterian Minister played a teaching role within the Mission. Their story was fascinating and interesting reinforcing that we do live a privileged life. Tail twister Bob was able to extract some fines for various misdemeanours and the singing of the national Anthem concluded the evening.

Ashburton Garden Club Ashburton Garden Club held their first meeting for 2019 at the Senior Centre on February 21 with 25 members present.

We had a garden walk on January 17 in the Tinwald area, first at Joy Stack’s garden and nursery, then afternoon tea and wander around Lushingtons before moving across the road to Malcolm Luxton’s fascinating rock collection.

After our February general business meeting, we welcomed Kurt Green to speak to us on the subject of Lawns and Lawn Care. To create a lush, healthy lawn involves a great deal of preparation work and attention as we were to discover. From the preparing the lawn area to be sown or even prepared for a readymade lawn, it is essential to follow key activities to achieve the end result. From spraying, rotary hoeing, raking stones, levelling the soil, walking the soil firm, sowing good quality fescue seed mix, to fertilising then gently watering on a regular basis.

Maintenance of the lawns thereafter, is equally important, such as watering for an hour at least three times a week.

Fertilise in the spring and autumn with slow release fertiliser, to ensure aeration of the soil is important too. Sprays to eradicate pesky weeds requires care of what is relevant, being careful not to use a spray that will ultimately kill the lawn itself. He was thanked for imparting his knowledge to us, for those of us who have to mow our own lawns, it was very welcome information.

Ashburton Horticultural Society President Trevor Gamblin welcomed members, Mayor, Councillors and visitors to our February Garden Awards presentation evening.

Trevor spoke on the changes to the Garden Competition this year and how successful it had been. Mayor Donna Favel spoke of the District being proud of our gardens, and thanked the Horticultural Society for encouraging people to look after their gardens, this helps present an attractive and welcoming place for people to come too.

Donna presented the trophies & certificates to the winners of Best Lawn, Best Display of Flowers and Special Feature.

Ron Andrews, judge from Christchurch Beautifying Assn spoke on their Garden Competition and was impressed with the standard of gardens in Ashburton.

This was followed by a slide show of some of Christchurch’s gardens with commentary by Trevor Tubman another Christchurch judge.

Ashburton MSA Petanque Club We had three players take part in the NZ Open Triples in Herne Bay over the first weekend of February being among the 44 teams taking part in this event.

We had seven players take part in the Waitangi Day tournament in Christchurch on February 6. Neville Bensdorp was in the winning team and Richard Browne runnuer up.

Our afternoon playing in the domain was a very relaxed and enjoyable affair and was followed by afternoon tea. It lovely sitting under the trees. A beautiful spot.

We had six players take part in the South Island Triples in Dunedin on February 16 and 17 facing some very good competition. Two players took part in a Pointing competition, and one in a Shooting competition all 3 earning a place, with Richard Browne winning the Pointing competition.

Doubtful weather saw us put off our Club Presidents Triples last Sunday and this will now be held on Sunday March 31. This is our first Club event of the year.

Friday March 1, 2 of our players will be part of a team taking part in the National Triples in Dunedin. On the Saturday and Sunday five of our players will be playing in teams in the National Triples in Dunedin.

The following Sunday March 10 we will be hosting the Ashburton Doubles, and entries have already started to come in.

Good numbers are still turning up on Club days where many of our members enjoy playing socially.

Ashburton Pakeke Lions Club Members and partners of the Ashburton Pakeke Lions Club met at the MSA Restaurant for the February meeting. Members were saddened to learn of the accidental death of valued member Lion Ray Harraway. Ray had contributed much to the club during his time of membership and a large number of members formed a Guard of Honour at his funeral. Gwenda Hansen had written a very appropriate poem as a tribute to Ray which she read out at the meeting.

Assistance was requested for the street appeals for Child Cancer on March 15, and Red Puppy for the Blind on March 27. Lion Les Briggs asked for help to deliver Meals on Wheels during March 11 to 14. Pakeke’s fundraising effort on Waitangi Day was most successful. All attention is now given to the Annual Charity Market day on March 2.

Members were fully briefed on all responsibilities and the allocations for jobs that have been made for the various sections of the market. As this is the major fundraising activity for the year all members, where possible, are expected to assist and will be identified by their high vis yellow jackets. A large organising team under 1st VP Lion Noel Lowe will swing into action from Wednesday February 27. Lion Jim Martin asked for urgent attention to finding an applicant to be sponsored for the Berwick Experience in May. Guest speakers, Jim and Diane Young, spoke of their time in Malawi working with the ‘Serving in Mission’ organisation from 2003 to 2018. Malawi is a beautiful country about the size of our

President Val Johnson welcomed members to the February meeting of the Mid Canterbury Ladies Friendship Club.

The National Anthem was sung, birthdays and anniversaries were celebrated.

There was a reminder of International Women’s Day on March 8. Trips Convenor Avis Kingsland reminded everyone of the Trip down Memory Lane on February 28 and the combined Friendship bus trip on March 19 to Kate Valley Waste Disposal Site and Alpaca Farm.

The Annual General Meeting is to be on April 10, 2019 to be followed by a 30th Birthday Luncheon at the Hotel Ashburton. More committee members are needed.

The guest speaker was Ross Taylor from Geraldine speaking about carnivorous plants. He said that people these days have smaller gardens. Love of plants often passes down through the generations but for Ross, his love of carnivorous plants began with a schoolboy yearning for a woman more than twice his age.

Ten-year-old Ross had talked his way on to a night computer course and was delighted when “corporate goddess” Helen, aged 24 years, was at the neighbouring terminal. She offered him a ride home as it was raining. He asked about her interests, and she invited him to see her collection of carnivorous plants.

That altered the direction of his life. Helen lived up a long, steep driveway, but she wasn’t there. Instead there was a tall man, it was her husband! However in the greenhouse, Ross was transfixed by the collection of endangered North American plants. The infatuation with the blonde goddess took a back seat, and the plants stepped into the driving seat. By the age of 15 he was supplying eight or nine garden centres.

Carnivorous plants naturally grow in poor soil and take few nutrients from the ground, and they’re an organic form of fly control which is very effective. He now has 15,000 plants in Geraldine, he sends seed to the USA, it is a hobby/ conservation effort.

The plants attract, catch and digest the insects. Nectar around the neck of the trap attracts insects which then slip and fall into the stomach of the hungry plant. Slippery sides and downward facing hairs prevent prey from climbing back out. New Zealand is fortunate to have such rare and wonderful plants in private collections and available for sale.

They are frost hardy and keep in full sun.

Congratulations was extended to Past President of Mid Canterbury Rural Women, Kerry Maw Smith. Kerry was awarded the Honora O’Neill Trophy for Best Provincial Report.

Goodhue admires verve of Reds star All Blacks star back Jack Goodhue says Jordan Petaia typifies the electric rugby that the Queensland Reds seem to be all about this season.

Two of the most talented outside centres in Super Rugby square off when the Crusaders visit the revitalised Reds in Brisbane on Saturday.

Goodhue has virtually entrenched himself as the starting All Blacks No.13 after a superb rookie Test season, with most interest now surrounding who will partner him in the midfield at the World Cup. The 23-year-old has seen enough from Petaia, five years his junior, to suggest he has a top-flight rival over coming seasons.

Glimpses of talent from Brisbane State High School talent Petaia last season meshed into a brilliant attacking display in Queensland’s opening 36-31 loss to the Highlanders in Dunedin last week.

Petaia beat defenders and used his pace on several occasions, forming what shapes as a lethal partnership with Reds skipper Samu Kerevi.

“I think he’s got really good speed, good skills,” Goodhue said of Petaia.

“For a young guy, he seems to read the play really well and I think he’s going to go from strength to strength this season. “(The Reds) have got a bit of razzle and they’re here to play. Arguably they played better than the Highlanders.”

The defending champion Crusaders have opened with wins over the Blues and Hurricanes and are the standout performers among some mixed early-season showings from the Kiwi teams.

Goodhue added to the trans-Tasman sentiment that Australia’s teams are improved in 2019, pointing to the Chiefs’ 5417 humbling in Canberra last week.

Plains Ladies Friendship Club The February meeting was held at the RSA rooms on February 25. Members were welcomed and celebrations were called for. Business matters were attended to and an invitation to join the Mid Canterbury Ladies Friendship Group Bus trip was issued.

Although it was short notice as the trip was to be on February 28 our members were encouraged to go if possible. The film for March is ‘Celia’ -a documentary about the last three days in the life of Celia Lashlie the first woman wardern in a men’s prison and who worked all her life for social justice.

Our mini speaker was Judith Sommerville who came to talk to us about Boost- a literacy programme running in 16 Mid Canterbury schools with 40 volunteer tutors. A Bequest was given to help child literacy and funding is sponsored through Advance Ashburton and the Mackenzie Trust for the next 5 years. Target age groups 7-8yr olds to give them the boost they need to achieve in literacy.

All the tutors and all the equipment to teach the children is provided at no cost to the schools or the parents. Each tutor has a computer and the children have a workbook. 1/2 an hour is spent on the workbook and 1/2 an hour on literacy orientated games on the computer. Full training is given to the

Judith was so enthusiastic about the programme and the difference that it is making to encourage children to be lifelong learners. After morning tea Norma Chittock was introduced and she spoke to us about Foundation of Peace children’s foundation NZ, which aims to create family based homes, within a village community for orphaned or abandoned children in Uganda and other African countries, as well as working to provide clean water, healthcare and sustainable projects for the whole community. Norma and her friend Marilyn travelled to Uganda last year and visited one of the villages and saw first-hand what the organisation was doing. She showed us lovely photos of well cared for happy children who were thriving in spite of the situations in which they were living.

They were also lucky enough to get to Kenya and go on safari, so we were entertained with photos of African wild life: lions, giraffe, water buffalo, elephants, rhino and hippo. It was wonderful to experience some of the exotic parts of the world through the eyes of others. Norma was also thanked by Sue Jackson and presented with a small gift. Members were reminded that next month’s meeting is the AGM and we are still looking for committee members!

U3A Ashburton The year began well with Ann Wise welcoming a large turnout, including 13 visitors to hear retired Lecturer Emeritus Neil Pickard, QSM speak on the subject of ‘The Evolution of Popular Song in 50’s and 60’s New Zealand’. Neil was Head of Jazz within the Faculty of Humanities at CPIT (now ARA) His busy tutoring career also included teaching French, English as a Second Language, Maori Studies and Broadcasting Studies. Outside of that Neil is also a guitarist, plays banjo, a vocalist and acoustic bassist. He was introduced by Malcolm Luxton.

Recently Neil had the pleasure of performing with his group in the newly repaired Christchurch Town Hall and it was this association that led him to think back to early days when playing as a rock guitarist with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra backing Rolf Harris, and feeling at odds with the classical musicians. It was to lead eventually to setting up the Jazz School. It finally opened in 1991 but took a lengthy 12 years before fruition.

Growing up in the era of radio where everything was heard by the ear unlike today where the visual is so important, gave Neil an excellent listening ability. Radio was an essential part of life then where the music tended to be American and the serials British.

Eventually Shellac recordings became available however they were never considered as good as the original, regarded as the definitive version. If it wasn’t original, it wasn’t right. The first recording wholly produced in New Zealand was ‘Blue Smoke’ in 1948. It was a huge hit. Later the version of ‘Lawdy Miss Clawdy’ as sung by Johnny Devlin also hit the big time.

Recalling the artists of the time including The Tumbleweeds (from Dunedin), Daphne Walker, Pat McMinn, Bill Savesi, Tex Morton, Slim Dusty and local Garner Wayne brought back memories of when radio ruled. Neil also gave demonstrations on the instruments he brought along (two banjos and two guitars) to demonstrate different sounds and ‘picking’ from the Nashville sound to Blues and Country. Having the ability to play the guitar put one in demand. Skiffle, Bottletop Broomsticks and T-Chest Basses and on to the 60s when the Bongos appeared.

With parents Dad a saxophonist, Mother a pianist and singer, both playing in a band in Timaru in 1938, it was probably inevitable the young Neil would also develop a passion for music with wide interests ranging from pipe bands to classical to folk and everything in between. Neil carried us on a journey of happy nostalgia as many relived their younger years through the music of the 50’s and 60’s. He was thanked by Richard Giller.

The next meeting will be March 26 when the speaker will be Julia Bradshaw on the “History of Marriage, Divorce and Bigamy on the Goldfields”.

Big batting effort required Ashburton College’s 1st XI cricketers trail Christchurch Boys’ High School’s (CBHS) third XI by 65 runs after day one of their twoday cricket match.

Playing in Christchurch, Ashburton College started the Canterbury Youth 1st XI Cup two-day match well, bowling first and having CBHS under pressure at 44/4.

But a knock of 120 from Charlie Swan, after being dropped a few times early in his innings, helped CBHS through to 216 all out.

For Ashburton College, Angus Spittal took 2/19, Tom Middleton took 2/32 and Angus Jemmett took 3/44.

In reply, Ashburton College were in real trouble at 65/4, before the two Middleton brothers put on a good 54-run partnership. Tom Middleton was eventually out for 44 while Ben Middleton was 36 not out at the end of the day, with Christian Thomson there with him unbeaten on six.

They will look to pick up where they left off on Saturday, back in Christchurch, at 151/8 and behind on the scoreboard by 65 runs.

Meanwhile, the Mid Canterbury Ashburton District Year 9/10 cricket team was in Southbridge on Saturday taking on the Southbridge/Leeston club’s Year 9/10 team.

The home side batted first and were bowled out for 129, with Tom Rosevear the best of the Ashburton’s bowlers, taking an impressive 4/13, while Seb McMillan took 2/11.

Racing 92 defend decision to sign Carter After signing Dan Carter as an injury replacement on a shortterm deal, French club Racing 92 have hit back against criticism received over the deal French paper L’Equipe reported that Carter, 36, will earn between NZ$33,000 and NZ$49,000 per month after replacing South African Pat Lambie, who was forced to retire due to concussion.

It was also reported that Carter will receive the same bonuses as regular season players should the club win the European Champions Cup or French Top 14 titles.

NZ rest policy to benefit Aussies Melbourne Rebels could benefit from All Blacks player welfare stipulations after the Highlanders overhauled their side for tomorrow’s clash of two unbeaten Super Rugby teams.

Only five players who started last week’s 36-31 victory over the Queensland Reds in Dunedin will run out again for the Highlanders in Melbourne.

Coach Aaron Mauger’s hand is forced, either through injury or the requirement that he limit the game time of his Test players.

Under an agreement between New Zealand Rugby and the Kiwi Super Rugby coaches, no All Blacks player should total more than 180 minutes of play through the first three rounds.

Two-year ban for Jayasuriya Sri Lanka batting great Sanath Jayasuriya has been banned from all cricket for two years after he breached two counts of the International Cricket Council’s anti-corruption code, the world governing body has said.

The ICC said the former captain had refused to co-operate with any investigation conducted by its anti-corruption unit (ACU) under Article 2.4.6 of the anti-corruption code.

It added that the 49-year-old had also been sanctioned for trying to conceal, destroy or tamper with evidence that could be crucial to anti-corruption investigation under Article 2.4.7 of the code.

“This conviction under the code demonstrates the importance of participants in cricket cooperating with investigations,” ICC General Manager Alex Marshall said.

“Compelling participants to co-operate under the code is a vital weapon in our efforts to rid our sport of corruptors.”

Sir Bob Charles has shown that he’s still got it after nailing a hole-in-one at the New Zealand Open Par 3 Champions event in Arrowtown. The 82-year-old thrilled the crowd at the ninth and final hole of the Open’s curtainraiser. Charles was delighted afterward, saying it was his eleventh hole-in-one of his career.

He has won the NZ Open four times, first winning it in 1954.

Charles, who is New Zealand’s first major champion having won the Open Championship in 1963, claimed 76 professional wins in his career – including six victories on the PGA Tour. He earned seven top-five finishes at majors, 11 top10s, and made the cut 44 times.

The 100th edition of the tournament begins at Milbrook resort and The Hills today.

Cosgrave: From Dubai to the derby Caulfield Cup-winning jockey Pat Cosgrave will make a flying visit to Auckland this weekend to partner the Chris Waller-trained Nobu in the Gr.1 Vodafone New Zealand Derby (2400m).

The 36-year-old Northern Irishman shot to prominence in this part of the world after partnering Benbatl to win the Gr.1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) last October before adding the Gr.1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) on Best Solution a week later.

Cosgrave, who is currently based in Dubai, won’t arrive in Auckland until Saturday morning but is looking forward to the challenge and linking up with the Waller stable once again.

“I rode Comin’ Through for Chris Waller in Dubai a couple of times earlier in the year and I know his Racing Manager Charlie Duckworth well, so the ride has come through that,” Cosgrave said.

“Chris asked if I would be interested in going down and riding Nobu and I had never been there (New Zealand) before. Chris is a world-class trainer, so I have taken the opportunity to go down and see how it goes.

“If Chris is sending it there he must think it has a live chance in the big race.”

Cosgrave said he had already watched some videos of past New Zealand Derbys to get an idea of what awaits and he would be doing more homework before making the journey.

“Between now and Saturday I’ll be going through all his races and looking through some of the opposition as well and hopefully see how the race is going to pan out,” Cosgrave said.

“I want to learn as much as possible, there is not much point in going all the way down to ride this horse and not have my homework done.

Guineas tilt hangs in balance for filly A trip north to contest the Gr.2 Norwood Family Wellington Guineas (1400m) at Trentham beckons for stakes-winning filly Emily Margaret if she performs well at Wingatui on Saturday.

The Kevin and Pam Hughestrained galloper (right) will lineup in the Listed NZB Insurance Stakes (1400m) on Saturday and her connections are pleased with her in the lead-up to the race.

“She seems fine, she’s freshened-up a wee bit,” Kevin Hughes said.

“We have good paddocks here (Riccarton), so she went down to the paddock every day and just had a swim for a few days, with all these firm tracks, just to get the jar out of them a bit.

“She galloped up on Tuesday and managing with a float trip under her belt she should be spot on for the day.”

Hughes said riding tactics were the undoing of his filly in the Gr.3 Desert Gold Stakes (1600m) last month with jockey Samantha Collett entering a speed duel with Lisa Allpress, aboard outsid-

er Miss Valencia, down the back straight, with the pair subsequently fading late.

However, he was pleased with her last start runner-up performance over 1400m at Riccarton earlier this month, which Hughes said has readied her for Saturday’s contest.

Emily Margaret has had an extensive three-year-old preparation, which started back in September with victory in the Listed

Canterbury Belle Stakes (1200m) and Hughes is hoping his filly can add to that tally on Saturday.

“She’s tough, nothing worries her,” he said. “She eats everything and she just progresses.

She’s naturally a bit tubby, so that helps when you have got a big three-year-old season on you.

“Robbie Hannam will ride her and she’ll settle in front, you can take her out if something has a crack.

“She’s the highest rated horse in the field and she’s best to just let roll and set her own pace and tough it out, especially coming up that bit of a dip at Wingatui.”

Hughes is eyeing a return to Trentham next month with his filly if everything goes to plan on Saturday.

“I’m pleased with her. If she comes through the race well then we will probably go and have a look at the boys in the Wellington Guineas,” he said.

“That’s the plan, to have a good run there at Wingatui, hopefully we can win it, and then go up to Wellington. - NZ Racing Desk

Former Mid Canterbury reinsman John Morrison was the star of the professional ranks at Tuesday’s Waikouaiti Trotting Club meeting at Oamaru.

Morrison scored victories with Melt Down and Franco June, who both won at good odds.

Morrison gave Melt Down a perfect run in the trail before peeling the pacer out for her winning finish in the straight.

The four-year-old was having her ninth start for Methven trainer Michael Heenan.

Morrison took a more aggressive approach with Franco June, but the result was the same.

He launched the Robert Wilson trained pacer from three back in the running line to issue a challenge to the leaders from the 600m.

Franco June sustained that run to hold out runner-up, Lilac Star, by three-quarters of a length at the finish.

Timaru’s Richie Taylor will be among those contesting the CTRA South Island Super Saloon title at Ashburton Speedway this weekend.

Super saloon racing is set to make a return to Ashburton this weekend after an absence of more than 10 years.

Ashburton Speedway will run the CTRA (Circle Track Racing Association) South Island Super Saloon Title on Sunday and lining up for a shot at supremacy round the quarter-mile Ashburton track will be a driver from Timaru who can’t wait to get back to Ashburton.

Richie Taylor was racing super saloons the last time they made an appearance on the track at Ashburton Speedway more than a decade ago, and he’s still racing and still among the country’s best.

But just who will come out on

top on Sunday is anyone’s guess.

Super saloons are a competitive bunch when it comes both to the cars and the drivers.

Super saloons are purpose-built tube frame race cars, with most running similar sized engines – Taylor’s being a 427 cubic inch Chevy – and the vast majority run on ethanol for fuel.

They run big tyres in order to gain the traction required on the dirt surface, with Taylor’s rear tyres being around 18 inches wide and the front ones 14 inches.

“They are a bit of a beast,” he said.

Taylor has been racing since 1984, starting off in streetstocks and progressing through various saloon grades before entering the

super saloons in 1990.

Taylor and his fellow super saloon drivers mainly run on tracks sanctioned by Speedway New Zealand and their season runs from October to just after Easter, with generally around 25 nights of racing in that time In early January, Taylor was racing in Huntly and last weekend he was in Invercargill. Getting around the country is a huge logistical effort and much of that work is done by his wife Brenda. She does most of the organising, leaving Taylor to focus on what has to be done on the track.

And he’s done pretty well over the years. He’s been racing for 35-odd years and while a national title has eluded him so far, he’s

finished second three times.

January’s trip to Huntly was for the latest New Zealand title race where he finished fifth out of about 50 cars.

“I’ve been literally within half a car length of it, but you either win or you don’t, it’s as simple as that,” Taylor said.

While winning is great, racing super saloons is something Taylor does simply for the love of it, and not for the money or the accolades.

“There’s a little bit of prizemoney, but it doesn’t come anywhere near covering your costs,” Taylor said. “It’s a passion. There’s so much work and time and money involved in doing it, that if you’re not committed and not passion-

ate you won’t last in this sport.”

All of the cars are professionally built and similar in performance and it often comes down to how you have your car set up for a particular race, as to how you fare, Taylor said.

There might be 20 cars in a race and a guy that shines in one race might struggle to do any better than 15th in the next race.

“No-one consistently drives from the back to the front,” Taylor said.

Just who will come out on top and take the CTRA South Island title will be known by late Sunday afternoon.

The speedway meet – at Ashburton Speedway on Seafield Road – will get under way at 12.30pm.
