Ashburton retailers need to collaborate on pre-Christmas trading hours to fight the allure of online shopping and big city malls, say some shop owners. The retailers are reporting a mixed bag in trading for Christmas and Boxing Day, with some run off their feet and others slow to move stock. Paper Plus reported “flat” trading as online shopping gains momentum, while The Somerset Grocer staff were “horrendously” busy on Boxing Day and yesterday, and had to bring in extra staff. Terry McNab at Paper Plus said internet retailing was growing each year, and he looked forward to the government introducing GST for online sales. “It’s just got to get on an equal playing field, then it will balance out,” he said.

we did that for two to three years, you don’t have to advertise anything, people just know,” he said. Mark Milmine at The Somerset Grocer agreed town centre retailers should “work together as a team and keep the locals in town shopping”. Currently the café closed at 5pm on weekdays leading up to Christmas, but he said he would be more than happy to change this to, say, 6pm or 8pm, in line with an agreed time. Attracting shoppers would help capitalise on how good the town was looking with its new Christmas tree and decorations.
