Firefighters across the district have avoided any major incidents across the Christmas period, but were kept busy, including a confusing call-out for the Methven brigade on Christmas Day evening.

Firefighters had initially responded to reports of a house fire

at 10.57pm and were supported by other units from around the district who were stood down after it turned out to be a report of a missing person, a Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson said.

Police confirmed they were called to Methven following the report of a missing person, who was located a short time later.

Police were also called to assist firefighters in the early hours of Wednesday morning following a report of a suspicious building fire on Chertsey Kyle Road and police confirmed they will be making enquiries.

Rakaia fire chief Tyrone Burrowes said the fire was not serious, but their initial thoughts were that the fire was suspicious,

so fire investigators were called.

“It was a pretty quick job for us, but we were largely there to keep things ticking over until the investigators arrived,” he said.

The fire was initially reported by a member of the public and Burrowes praised their actions.

“It’s excellent to know that there are people out there who are keeping an eye out for these

sorts of things and ready to ring us when they spot something that’s not quite right,” Burrowes said.

Firefighters from Ashburton and Rakaia were also kept busy with two vegetation fires that were attended for less than 30 minutes, but that should remind people to be cautious as the weather warms up.

Came for two years stayed for 35 For 35 years Maree Isherwood has been the go-to person for staff and teachers at Methven Primary School, but when the 2019 school year starts Maree will be a lady of leisure. She talked to reporter Sue Newman about a job and a school that became a very important part of her life.

Maree said she’s always taken part in school activities – ski trips, athletics and swimming sports.

And she’s coached swimming and been a learn to swim tutor.

“I’ve always felt very much part of the school, felt involved in the whole school, part of what is happening.”

During her years at Methven Primary, Maree said the school had grown significantly. New buildings have been constructed, more classrooms added.

Mt Hutt skifield had a big impact on Methven and on the school. In its early days there were families who relocated to Methven for the winter, with their children spending their winter at the school.

“This job came up, it worked well with the school holidays. It was only two hours a day when I started. I certainly didn’t intend to stay this long,” she said One year merged into the next, into the next and Maree found the school and its staff and students, had become a very important part of her life. Leaving slipped off the radar.

She worked more hours, more days and continued to love every minute of those working hours.

“It’s a great school and this is a great community,” she said.

While her official job might be as part of the school’s office team,

Maree Isherwood never intended to become a longstayer at Methven Primary School but, 35 years since the day she started as the school’s ‘office lady’, she’s decided it’s time to head for retirement.

Making that call wasn’t easy.

The school, its students and staff, have become part of her family and her family – over three generations – has most definitely been part of the school.

Maree Hobbs spent her primary years at the school, her secondary years next door, her pre-children working years in the local branch of the BNZ. Marriage to Michael and the arrival of children Brent and Cheryl saw her out of the workforce for a few years, but with

Over many years, groups of Japanese students also spent time at Methven Primary and for Maree, some of those students also became part of her family for a time.

Those friendships remain today.

There’s something about Methven that keeps bringing people back, Maree said, not least of these, daughter Cheryl.

She’s a primary school teacher who has come back home to teach at the school where her mum was already on staff.

Students were quick to find a solution to the problem of two staff members named Isherwood – Cheryl is Miss Ish and Maree, Mrs Isherwood.

talk between mother and daughter, it all stays on a professional level, Maree said.

Over the years Methven has changed and grown, and those changes mean that she no longer knows every family at the school, but the office is central to the whole school and that means office staff still have contact with

virtually every family.

“I always felt very involved with the whole school, with part of everything that was happening,” she said.

Over the past 35 years students have changed too. They’re more worldly and some of that change she believes has been driven by technology.

“That’s changed children quite dramatically but basically they haven’t changed, they’re so open and the things they come out with are so often hilarious,” she said.

At most schools the ‘office lady’ is the fix-it person for every problem and for Maree that’s also meant being the first port of call

for plasters and bandages for bumped and bruised youngsters.

For many years she was the school’s board of trustees secretary and that role was an interesting addition to school office work, she said.

“It was interesting, very interesting, with different boards and different people.”

In terms of the school office, equipment used has changed beyond recognition, she said.

“I used an old gestetner (early photocopier) and manual typewriter and you tried not to make any typing errors. I’ve had to learn so much new technology.”

Hers was a sole-charge role 35 years ago; today there are four in the office team, full and part-timers.

Making the decision to retire wasn’t easy, but it felt right, she said.

“Our son’s near Motueka and my three grandchildren are up there and now we’ll be able to go up whenever it suits,” she said.

Add to that husband Michael’s brush with cancer four years ago and time is something Maree said they’ve realised you can’t take for granted.

“That was a dreadful time in our lives, but we’ve been lucky, Michael was so fortunate, now it’s time to get out and do things.”

She plans to travel, spend more time painting and in her garden.

Michael and Maree farmed on the outskirts of Methven and still live on part of the farm, so he’s ‘sort of retired’, she said.

“I will miss this place and I suppose if they’re desperate I might come back and relieve, but you know when it’s time. You look at the little things we worry about, they’re nothing, your health is everything.”

She’s been through the official farewells and managed to stay dry-eyed, but at the end of her final day, Maree knows she might not be holding it together so well when she walks out of the school gate for the last time.

Burglary spates common in 2018

It has been a mixed bag for police in Mid Canterbury over the past year, with the usual tragic tales of far too many deaths on our roads and spates of burglaries.

One story that was a regular theme throughout the year was who held the top seat as sub-area commander at the Ashburton Police station.

Scott Banfield, who held the title for more than four years, departed for Christchurch and was replaced, short-term, by Mark Worner.

His full-time replacement was announced in the form of Phil Dean, who came into the role pushing a very community focused and inclusive leadership style.

The introduction of more public meetings and other initiatives were a trademark of Dean’s time in charge, which ended on December when Dean was replaced by Senior Sergeant Matt Emery who is a short-term replacement.

Safety on the main road through the district was a sticking point once again, with crashes on State Highway 1 featuring regularly.

One of the worst crashes to occur in the district was a double fatal that occurred near Rangitata in October.

The car that is believed to have caused that crash was reported to be dangerously weaving prior to the accident.

The other fatal crash that occurred in the district, pushing the total for deaths on Mid Canterbury roads to three for the year, was the tragic crash that occurred on Wakanui Road.

Speed was believed to play a part in that crash which killed one person and injured three others, leaving a crash scene that was described as a ‘war zone’.

While tragedy was spread throughout the year, one positive for the Ashburton police was that they were able to say goodbye to one of the most iconic officers in town, and one that most kids and adults, who grew up in the region, would have learnt a thing or two from.

A police operation following up on an aggravated robbery caused a stir on Alford Forest Road in October.

Chris Wiltshire retired from the police in 2018, and along with Pup Chamberlain, had become best known for his role in community education.

With his iconic handlebar moustache, he served for 43 years across the district, going everywhere from shootings to highway pursuits to classrooms and mobility scooter meetings.

It wasn’t always easy work, but Chris said he has liked what he’s done.

“You experience things other people don’t get to. You see people at their very best and their very worst. But if you see someone in a bad situation and you’re able to help them, then that’s a good feeling,” he said.

This year also saw the discovery

of an Ashburton connection to the West Coast Stanley Graham massacre that occurred in 1941.

Frederick Jordan was one of the officers slain in the massacre, and after an initial story in the Guardian, more information came to light in regard to his connection to the district.

He moved to the region with his family in 1924 and attended

Hampstead School, before working in the bakery and tearooms his parents had bought, and then working at a menswear store until he joined the police.

This lead to his grave being cleaned up after it was re-discovered, and an ex-police officer is currently exploring options to have the headstone restored or even upgraded.

Christmas cake finds good resthome

Jean Best has always enjoyed giving away Christmas baking.

“In the past I have given away small portions of the cakes I made, to friends and neighbours. But this year I have decided to step it up,” she said.

In fact, she stepped it up quite a bit, deciding to bake and deliver a large Christmas cake to each of the resthomes in Ashburton.

Every night after cooking dinner for her and husband David, Jean would get busy in the kitchen baking.

Seven kilograms of fruit, 1kg of sugar, 28 eggs, plus assorted other ingredients including two cups of brandy later, beautifully iced and delicious cakes materialised.

“I have made eight in total, seven for the rest homes and one for us, but I will probably give most of that one away too.”

Not content with baking for the local rest homes, Jean also made an extra cake to take into work to share with her workmates at Medifab.

Jean and husband David delivered all the cakes recently.

“It is such a wonderful feeling to be doing this for the resthomes and their residents.”

Home baking a treat to share at Christmas

By HeatHer Mackenzie Margaret Maginness was looking forward to a large family Christmas this year, and thanks to Lauren and Gemma Taylor and their mother Sandy, Margaret had yummy home baking to share.

Another bonus for Margaret this Christmas was her daughter coming home from Australia.

“She wasn’t here last year, I can’t wait to see her,” she said.

The girls wanted to be involved in granting wishes.

They decided window cleaning and gardening wasn’t where their strengths lay, so when Margaret’s wish for some home-baking arose they didn’t

hesitate to volunteer.

Both girls are handy in the kitchen.

Light-hearted twin rivalry arose at the Ashburton College prizegiving this year.

Gemma received a top award in Food and Nutrition along with Lauren’s cooking partner.

“What?” Lauren asked.

“How did that work? Her and I did all the same things?”

Margaret said that in her early working career trained as a midwife.

So when she found out that Sandy Taylor was a midwife as well, conversations flowed about what a privilege it is to be involved with families at this time and how, quite often, long-lasting friendships are formed.

Christmas Day internet use trends upwards If you were hitting your mobile more this Christmas, you’re not alone.

Vodafone says Kiwis consumed 573 terabytes of data on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. That’s equivalent to Kiwis streaming approximately 255,000 hours of video in just two days and a 39 per cent increase over the same period last year.

The most popular times to video-call family and friends far and wide or check out the latest online content was between 8pm and 10pm on both Christmas Day and Boxing Day, with data traffic hitting peak use levels of 18.1TB and 19.5TB respectively, Vodafone says.

Vodafone, Spark and 2degrees all beefed up their mobile coverage around holiday hotspots, with Vodafone deploying “cows” or “cell sites on wheels”, among other measures.

“Some of these areas may go to triple the usual data consumption in a single day as people head over to the beach or favourite picnic spot when there’s great

weather,” Vodafone technology director Tony Baird says.

The Commerce Commis-

sion’s recent annual report on the telco market revealed a couple of trends that have boosted

our use of mobiles.

One is that Spark, Vodafone and 2degrees are now offering

more generous plans, especially on the data front (although the ComCom is questioning whether “unlimited” plans are really unlimited).

The report also revealed that 40 per cent of NZ households are now mobile-only, and 60 per cent of new connections are shunning a landline - at least for voice calls.

Kiwis keen to send a short message of Christmas cheer (and possibly a note of thanks for their new Christmas goodies) also sent nearly 1.24 million SMS messages or texts per hour at a peak time of 9am on Christmas Day, compared with 1.27 million at last year’s Christmas peak.

Overall a total of 15.57 million texts were sent on Christmas Day this year, compared with 16.8 million last year, a 7.55 per cent decrease, Vodafone says.

People are messaging each other more than ever, but these days they are more likely to do it via Apple’s iMessage, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Microsoft’s Skype or another free app.

The most taxing PR jobs in 2018 The surge in petrol prices around the country was the hardest issue for public relations companies to manage in 2018, according to an annual ranking by BlacklandPR. Petrol prices nationwide increased by 3.5 cents a litre on September 30 after a new fuel excise tax was introduced by the Government.

In Auckland motorists were further hit by the introduction of a regional fuel tax of 11.5 cents a litre.

Mark Blackham, BlacklandPR director, said the rise in petrol prices was the most widely discussed issue of the year.

“It affected almost all New Zealanders in their work and personal

lives,” Blackham said.

“Commentators and politicians noticed the impact on daily life in New Zealand and tapped into the discontent, which intensified the issue.”

The petrol price increase scored 9 out of 10 for profile and impact, 8 out of 10 for emotion, and 4 out of 10 for complexity, for a total score of 30 in BlacklandPR’s ranking.

BlacklandPR uses a scoring system that ranks issues out of 10 for four factors: Profile (media coverage and “talkability” in everyday life), Impact (how many people are consciously affected directly or indirectly), Emotion (the intensity of emotional reaction), and

Complexity (complications and technicalities of the issue).

But while petrol prices may have had the biggest impact on New Zealanders, it was sexual misconduct at law firm Russell McVeagh that stirred the strongest emotional responses, Blackham said.

“Sexual harassment was the year’s most topical issue and Russell McVeagh was the catalyst for New Zealand’s ‘#metoo’ moment,” Blackham said.

The strong outpouring of emotion, which BlacklandPR scored a 10 out of 10, propelled the issue to second-equal hardest public relations challenge for the year.

The issue also scored a 9 for pro-

file, 2 for impact and 8 for complexity.

Handling the Mycoplasma bovis outbreak also came in at the number two spot, scoring a 9 for profile, 6 for impact, 6 for emotion and 8 for complexity.

Blackham said it was notable that three of New Zealand’s largest companies – Auckland Airport, Air New Zealand and Fonterra – were almost never out of the news over a variety of issues.

These companies faced more than two dozen minor PR challenges including contentious safety videos, reports on infrastructure charging and profit loss.

An app -EEL-ing home make-over for short finned tuna A project to protect short finned tuna (eel) and upland bully has been completed on a Hinds property thanks to the work of a landowner and support from the Ashburton Zone Committee’s Immediate Steps fund.

The project involved planting more than 2000 natives and installing fencing along the margins of Coldstream to shield the habitat of these native species from grazing sheep.

The banks of the stream were also re-stabilised in some areas to reduce the chance of sediment entering the waterway.

Panic as quake jolts Sicily An earthquake triggered by Mount Etna’s eruption has jolted eastern Sicily, injuring at least 10 people, damaging churches and houses on the volcano’s slopes, and prompting panicked villagers to flee their homes.

Italy’s Civil Protection officials said the quake, which struck before dawn at 3.19am local time, was part of a swarm of about 1000 tremors, most of them barely perceptible, linked to Etna’s volcanic eruption this week.

Italy’s national seismology institute said the quake had a magnitude of 4.8 on the open-ended Richter scale and 4.9 on the moment magnitude scale, which relates to the amount the ground slips.

It struck north of Catania, the largest city in the eastern part of the Mediterranean island, but no damage or injuries were reported there.

The quake opened up cracks in homes in several towns, sending chunks of concrete debris tumbling to the ground.

It toppled a Madonna statue in a church in Santa Venerina and broke up footpaths and a stretch of highway, forcing it to close. Many people spent the hours after the quake sleeping in their cars.

Italy’s culture ministry said the quake damage to churches was being tallied by experts.

“Etna remains a dangerous volcano, and this country of ours is unfortunately fragile,” government undersecretary Vito Crimi said as he reported 10 people injured.

The most seriously injured was a 70-year-old man who fractured ribs and was undergoing surgery for chest injuries.

A 71-year-old patient was being kept in hospital for observation, while others were treated and released, the Italian news agency ANSA reported.

Additionally, 18 other people went to local hospitals suffering from panic attacks or shock, news reports said.

One 80-year-old man was safely extracted from the rubble of his home, ANSA said, while a woman told state radio that her sister was pulled out from under a heavy armoire that had toppled.

A ceiling collapsed in another house, and in other homes

parts of exterior walls crumbled. Some stone walls along fields and local roads crumbled.

Etna, the largest of Italy’s three active volcanoes, has been particularly active since July. In recent days, Etna’s latest eruption has been shooting volcanic ash, heavy smoke and lava stones into the air, coating roads and homes nearby with ash. A new fracture has opened near Etna’s southeast crater and lava has been flowing down an uninhabited slope.

The quake was also felt in the upscale Sicilian resort town of Taormina and in other towns in eastern Sicily.

The Civil Protection agency said temporary shelters were being set up in gyms or municipal buildings for people whose houses were damaged or who were too frightened to return to their homes.

Italy’s Civil Protection chief said it appeared the activity at Etna was calming down.

“From a scientific point of view, we’re dealing with an isolated event,” Angelo Borrelli said.

“The technical experts tell us we’re heading toward a cooling of the lava, and we ought to expect a quiescence of the phenomenon (of earthquakes).”

Israeli official confirms Syria airstrikes An Israeli security official has confirmed responsibility for airstrikes in Syria, saying the air force had hit a series of targets involved in Iranian arms transfers to the Hezbollah militant group.

Russia criticised the airstrike, saying it endangered civilian flights. The comments highlighted the increasingly tense relations between Israel and Russia.

The Israeli official said the air force had attacked several Iranian targets in three main locations. He said the targets were primarily storage and logistics facilities used by archenemy Iran to ship weapons to Hezbollah.

He said Israel also destroyed a Syrian anti-aircraft battery

that fired at the Israeli planes, and claimed that Iranian forces are operating less than 80 kilometres from the Israeli border, contrary to Russian assurances.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity under standard Israeli security protocols.

Earlier, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Maj Gen Igor Konashenkov said that six Israeli F-16 jets launched a “provocative” raid at the moment when two civilian airliners were preparing to land in Damascus and Beirut, creating a “direct threat” to the aircraft.

Lebanon’s acting Transport Minister Youssef Fenianos confirmed Konashenkov’s account.

Fenianos said the Lebanese government will present a

complaint to the UN Security Council.

The Syrian military didn’t fully engage its air defence assets to avoid accidentally hitting the passenger jets, Konashenkov said. He added that Syrian air traffic controllers redirected the Damascus-bound plane to a Russian air base in Syria’s coastal province of Latakia.

Konashenkov said the Syrian air defence forces shot down 14 of the 16 guided bombs dropped by the Israeli jets, while the remaining two hit a Syrian military depot 7 kilometres west of Damascus, injuring three Syrian soldiers.

But the Israeli official said all targets had been hit, in some cases causing secondary explosions. He said errant Syrian an-

ti-aircraft fire had endangered the civilian flights.

In recent years, Israel has acknowledged carrying out scores of airstrikes in neighbouring Syria.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly said Israel will not allow Iran to establish a permanent military presence in postwar Syria.

That mission has been complicated by the September 17 downing of the Russian reconnaissance aircraft by Syrian fire.

Russia, which also backs Assad, has blamed Israel for the friendly-fire mishap and reportedly scaled back a hotline that allowed the two air forces to coordinate and avoid unintended clashes.

Amercian first to traverse Antarctica unaided An American has became the first person to traverse Antarctica alone without any assistance, trekking across the polar continent in an epic 54-day journey that was previously deemed impossible.

Colin O’Brady, of Portland, Oregon, finished the bone-chilling, 1500-kilometre journey on Wednesday.

“I did it!” a tearful Brady said on a call to his family, according to his wife, Jenna Besaw.

O’Brady was sleeping near the finish line in Antarctica late on Wednesday and could not immediately be reached for comment.

The 33-year-old O’Brady documented his nearly entirely uphill journey on his Instagram page. He wrote on Wednesday that he covered the last roughly 129 kilometres in one big, impromptu final push to the finish line that took well over an entire day.

Though others have traversed Antarctica, they either had assistance with reinforced supplies or kites that helped propel them forward.

In 2016, British explorer Henry Worsley died attempting an unassisted solo trip across Antarctica, collapsing from exhaustion toward the end of the trek.

Worsley’s friend and fellow English adventurer Louis Rudd is currently attempting an un-

aided solo in Worsley’s honour and was competing against O’Brady to be the first to do it.

Besaw said O’Brady plans to stay on Antarctica until Rudd finishes his trek, hopefully in the next few days.

O’Brady described in detail the ups and downs along the way since he began the trek on November 3. He had to haul 170 kilograms of gear largely uphill and over sastrugi – wavelike ridges created by wind. - AP

Lohan’s stepmum in trouble Authorities say the stepmother of actress Lindsay Lohan tried to commandeer an occupied bus and attacked its driver on Christmas Day. Pennsylvania State Police said they arrested 36-year-old Kate Major Lohan of Florida, and charged her with driving under the influence, disorderly conduct, harassment and public drunkenness. She made bail and was released. Major Lohan didn’t have a home phone listing, and a defence lawyer wasn’t listed on court documents. The Morning Call of Allentown says court records allege she was angry that she missed her stop, and began assaulting the bus driver, Major Lohan is married to Michael Lohan, the father of Lindsay Lohan.

Black has gaming channel Actor Jack Black has launched a YouTube channel called Jablinski Games, he has revealed. The channel will focus on “games, food, and life,” according to the description underneath an introductory clip. “It’s gonna be bigger than Ninja. It’s gonna be bigger than PewDiePie,” Black said before attempting (and failing) to impersonate YouTube’s biggest gaming celebrity. Black’s first video already has over 1.2 million views and is #10 on YouTube’s trending list, as of this writing.

The Jablinski Games channel has over 420,000 subscribers so far, and the actor is apparently working on it with his son.

Who should be on the honours list?

N ew Year’s Honours – what do we think of them?

Have they outgrown their use, are they missing the point of what they should be all about or are you really happy with them each time they roll around? It is important we ask ourselves these questions because they are, after all, our awards.

Anyone out there in the community can jump online, download a nomination form and put someone’s name forward for consideration at either the Queen’s Birthday Honours or New Year’s Honours.

A nomination might not necessarily mean instant success, but it is a step in the right direction.

This time last year there was a really strong opinion that the honours had become stale. Too many politicians were being given letters on the end of their names without actually offering up enough for New Zealand to deserve the recognition.

The general consensus back then was that it would be much more enjoyable to see unwitting and unknown people being

given recognition for the incredible volunteer work they do around the country as opposed to high-powered individuals being given yet another reason to puff out their chest and feel important.

Don’t get me wrong. There are a lot of people who appear on the lists who are exceptionally deserving of their honour.

We have a country of incredible people. Kind people, who are prepared to put the welfare and safety of others before themselves and it’s those people we need to celebrate each year.

On Monday morning the 2018 list of New Year’s Honours will be announced to the public.

There will be no real surprises for most New Zealanders.

Common names will appear and

be given their recognition, while some may raise an eyebrow or two around their inclusion.

But we need to remember than in order for these awards to continue down the path in which they should be headed, it’s up to us to nominate the right people.

Everyone should be able to identify just one person from any part of their life who goes over and above the norm for the betterment of others.

These are the people we are after.

Jump online, put a nomination in and, who knows, you might play a part in someone getting the true recognition they deserve while also ensuring one of the major prize-givings of the year continues to be about the everyday New Zealand hero.

Updating the iconic D-Max A

fter stepping down from testing the monstrous Dodge Ram, the new Isuzu D-Max LS was more eye-opening than

expected.

The Dodge is everything that we know and love about America – excessive.

They have options purely because they can, not because you need them.

So it was nice to move into something that was more in line with New Zealand’s requirements.

Like all great ideas, the best ones are simple but very effective.

The Isuzu D-Max range is available in 6 platforms.

Three of which are 4WD only, and the other three are available with selectable 2WD & 4WD. Double-cab models are available in LS, LX and LS-T spec.

Single space-cab is available in LS and LS Chassis, and the single cab is available in LX Chassis.

Both of the chassis models come with a custom aluminium flat deck as opposed to the standard ute deck.

The range starts with the LX Automatic 2WD at $39,890 and with 11 variants to choose from; it goes all the way up to the LS-T Automatic 4WD starting at $61,990.

Every model available comes with the 3.0-litre turbo-diesel, in-line

4-cylinder, DOHC, 16-valve Isuzu 4JJ1-TC Hi-Power diesel engine.

They produce 130kw @ 3600 rpm and 430 Nm of torque between 2000 > 2200 rpm.

All models are available in 6-speed manual or automatic transmission.

For the models that come with selectable 2WD & 4WD, you have the latest Terrain Command system which allows you to switch on the fly from 4H-2WD at speeds up to 100km/h.

Every model is built on a fulllength, heavy-duty truck chassis, and comes with front independent high ride coil springs, with gas shock absorbers, upper and lower wishbones and stabiliser bar.

The rear has an alloy-steel over slung long-span leaf spring with gas shock absorbers.

And for the two flat deck chassis models, the leaf springs and shocks are upgraded with heavier duty parts.

The changes still keep the iconic look of the Isuzu D-max, while keeping it modern looking.

On the outside, there is an allnew front bumper and grille, new headlights and bonnet.

So in my mind, it looks the way it always looked: great.

B-Class sharpens up

T

he Mercedes-Benz B-Class is almost the lost soul in the German marque’s extensive range of models.

The compact tourer is rarely in the spotlight, despite it being in the intensely competitive compact vehicle market.

Visually, the current model hardly stands out but it offers a degree of compact luxury combined with practicality.

It appeals mostly to an older age group, who particularly appreciate the high driving position and the ease of entering and leaving the vehicle.

Mercedes-Benz has now responded to growing demand for a smarter-looking model by launching the third-generation B-Class, to go on sale here around the middle of next year.

As well as looking sharper, the new B-Class has the latest driver assistance and safety technology, including the much-lauded MBUX multi-media system that has proven popular on the A-Class hatchbacks.

The new B-Class is sharper looking than the current model, is more aerodynamically efficient, and the interior has undergone a significant upgrade.

Pricing will be confirmed closer to the local launch.

Mercedes-Benz New Zealand general manager Ben Giffin said the B-Class combined luxury with practicality and the new generation could now add technology to its repertoire.

“Featuring the MBUX infotainment system launched in the A-Class, plus a new fuel efficient powertrain, we believe this new B-Class will provide a genuine lifestyle alternative to our customers,” he said.

We drove two of the new B Class models at an international launch in Majorca, Spain, last week, and they offer a smooth, high-riding, and comfortable drive.

Here in New Zealand we will be getting the 1.3-litre petrol-engined model, although several new diesel models are being offered in Europe, where the B-Class has traditionally been more popular than here, especially with taxi operators.

The new models are roomier, with 33mm more elbow room in the front seats, thanks to reconfigured door mechanisms and redesigned door panels.

Visibility has been improved by moving the B-pillar 40mm further back, and improving the design of the dashboard.

The new models have the same large glass multi-function screen used in the A-Class models.

This is the third-generation of the B-Class.

Since its introduction in 1997 the company has sold more than 1.5 million B-Class vehicles throughout the world, although it is not a huge volume seller for the brand in this country.

There were 88 B-Class models registered during 2017 and 37 during the period to the end of September this year.

The model upgrade is part of Mercedes Benz’s determination to improve and expand its range of compact vehicles, which started with the new A-Class hatchback earlier this year.

Demand for the new compact range ( A-Class, B-Class, and GLA models) has been so great that Mercedes-Benz has entered an unusual joint venture arrangement to boost production in Finland, as well as at its largest manufacturing plant in Germany, to meet worldwide demand.

The buggy is back V

olkswagen is resurrecting the classic dune buggy as a modern electric car, according to an anonymous source inside the automaker.

The new car is ‘under active consideration’ as a possible addition to the firm’s upcoming range of zero-emission ‘ID’ vehicles, it’s claimed.

It will be inspired by the classic 1960s Meyers Manx dune buggy, which itself was built on an original VW Beetle chassis. Like the 60’s version, the modern two-seater open-top buggy will feature a freestanding windshield, oversized tires and a roll bar, according to the source.

It comes after news emerged in September that the revitalised Beetle was itself to be axed 80 years after it was first introduced.

Speaking to Autocar UK, the anonymous source said that the dune buggy concept is currently under construction and is expected to be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2019.

Volkswagen never built it’s own dune buggy, but many were created using Beetle frames or chassis, from which the body could easily be removed.

The 1964 Meyers Manx shaped the rise of the dune buggy phenomenon in the United States and abroad beginning.

It was named after Bruce Meyers, a pioneer of the dune buggy craze who built car kits to convert VW beetle chassis for off-road use.

In a similar fashion, the new dune VW buggy will be based on the company’s new battery-powered chassis platform, which has been designed to accommodate a variety of body styles.

The firm is said to be working on two other retro-themed electric concept models under the ‘ID’ moniker to fit this base.

The first is a a five-door hatchback, a ‘contemporary re-creation of the iconic Beetle’, planned for the third quarter of 2019.

The second, known as the ID Buzz, will be based on the iconic microbus van that became synonymous with hippies during the 1960s, which has been confirmed for production and launched in 2022.

Dr. Herbert Diess, Chairman of the Board of Management for the Volkswagen brand, says that the new electric cars will offer more than what we’ve seen from other car makers and will be ‘much more affordable’.

The beasts do battle

T

hink for a second about how much cars have changed in the last 51 years.

We’ve seen comprehensive advancements in safety, power-train refinement, and seats designed specifically to gently blow cold air onto our buttocks.

Over that same period, two manufacturers have pushed each other to perfecting that most imperfect of platforms; the two-door, rear-wheel drive, V8-powered performance car.

The all-out war between the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang has been something that New Zealanders have been forced to merely spectate from afar.

Until now, that is.

This is the Chevrolet Camaro 2SS and Ford Mustang Bullitt – pictured not in sunny California or the Motor City of Detroit, but instead on a backdrop of a Waikato b-road.

They’re here, guys. They’re finally here.

The Mustang has been sold locally for a few years now of course in various model forms.

The Camaro, on the other hand, is a fresh sight indeed. Just one model is slated for New Zealand – the 2SS. And perhaps the first elephant in the room to negotiate before going any further is its $104,990 price-tag.

Internet commenters in their traditional shoot-first-questions-later style have been quick to dismiss the price of the Camaro – fuelled somewhat by the fact that you can get a Mustang GT for a dime under $80k.

The difference here comes down to simple economies of scale.

Ford produces thousands upon thousands of right-hand drive Mustangs out of its facility in Michigan for the UK, Japan, Australia, wee little New Zealand, and several other left-driving countries.

The Camaro on the other hand doesn’t have the same luxury.

It arrives as a complete left-hand drive machine at HSV’s Melbourne plant, where it gets stripped back to the firewall and beyond.

Each piece that comes off is bagged and tagged, the full wiring loom is effectively flipped upside down, a freshly made dash and 356 other RHD-specific bits go in, parts from the original car go back on, and out the door it goes.

In total, each Camaro conversion takes 130 work hours. They’re only making 550 of them in this first run – 38 of which are set

to come to New Zealand.

Small numbers, larger price.

In some ways, that price makes it a more suitable rival for the Bullitt than the Mustang GT. With the swagger of Steve McQueen himself, the four-wheeled homage rolls into the equation with a price of $93,490.

Changes over the Mustang GT include all of the visual ties made iconic by the film of the same name; 19-inch Torq-Thurst wheels, badge deletes, chrome tinsel, green stitching, a cue-ball gear-knob, and that signature Dark Highland Green hue.

Let’s talk numbers.

The Bullitt’s 5.0-litre Coyote V8 gets a 6kW power bump over the standard GT by virtue of an open-air induction system, larger 87mm throttle bodies, and the Powertrain Control Module from the Shelby

Take their interiors for example.

The Camaro has the better, lower seating position and a much higher spec (including heated/cooled seats and cross-traffic alert), but the Mustang has a cabin formed out of better materials and about twice the visibility. This helps make the Mustang the more usable car by far.

Lighter steering and a more generous glass-house make it much easier to drive.

The back seats have more legroom, too (getting into the Camaro’s rear seats feels like childbirth in reverse).

Neither right-hand drive conversion is perfect, but ironically it’s HSV who have done the better job here.

To separate these two cars in any meaningful way, you need to drive them.

And it’s here that they project two surprisingly different personalities.

GT350. This results in 345kW at 7000rpm and 556Nm at 4600rpm, sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual.

That’s more power than the Camaro, but less torque. It sources its thrills from a larger 6.2-litre LT1 V8 that generates 340kW at 6000rpm and 615Nm at 4400rpm, paired with an eight-speed automatic.

This engine is the successor to the much loved LS family, and it’s undeniably a beast.

The Camaro hits 100km/h in 4-seconds flat, six tenths quicker than the Bullitt Mustang.

Top speeds between the pair are said to be separated by just 3km/h - 262km/h in the Mustang, 265km/h in the Camaro.

That tit-for-tat exchange continues throughout almost every element of these two cars.

I won’t beat around the bush here … the Camaro feels like the quicker car almost immediately. More torque from its higher-capacity engine makes its performance more accessible more often.

The eight-speed automatic reacts sharply on upshifts, but can be hesitant with rev-matching on downshifts.

Cornering is where it shines in particular, feeling much more dynamic and sophisticated than the Mustang.

Both cars sport a limited-slip diff and independent suspension on all four corners, but the Camaro feels much more planted and confident – especially when using the throttle to aid mid-corner rotation.

Heavier, more precise steering and a shorter, less flexible rear tyre sidewall (275/35 Goodyear Eagle ZR20s versus the

Mustang’s 275/40 Michelin Pilot Sport 4S) could be part of the how and why.

The Mustang on the other hand feels less grown up, less serious.

Its steering is much lighter and suspension much more forgiving in this company.

It means that you need to truly hustle it in order to match the Camaro on a twisty road. Its six-speed manual is a far cry from the snickety precise units you might find in a Civic Type R or MX-5. It’s workmanlike, with a longer and less clicky shift action.

But the feel through the clutch pedal sees more consistent than previous Mustang 6-speeds, and it comes with rev matching capabilities – perfect for scaring the tonsils out of other motorists at intersections (not that we’d condone that kind of thing, obviously …).

Perhaps the biggest difference mechanically is how the two cars deliver their power. While the Chevrolet’s LT1 explodes off the line, Ford’s Coyote requires you to take it to its screaming 7400rpm redline to squeeze the most out of it.

The improved induction breathing apparatus means that the Bullitt is more eager to hit redline than ever before, and the subsequent engine note sounds much more musical and rich than the parping and popping LT1.

Swirling all of these elements together makes picking a victor incredibly difficult.

My head picks the Camaro. To be honest, it picked the Camaro quite early on in the piece. The amount of grip and capability is greater in the Chevrolet. Leaping from apex to apex, it feels like the car that’s done the most to further the muscle car formula.

There are plenty of far more expensive, far more sophisticated sports cars on the market that it would proudly embarrass on a twisty road.

But my heart picks the Bullitt.

It’s a charmer, a traditionalist.

From the moment you set off, it feels like the more authentic muscle car here.

It requires more input and risk-taking from the driver to match the Camaro’s corner-carving pace, but, in some ways that makes it the more rewarding, more satisfying car – one that’s easier to live with to boot.

Both are exceptional machines, and buyers who aren’t divided by brand lines would likely be extremely happy having either one parked in their driveway.

But there has to be a winner.

And today, by a whisker, it’s the Mustang.

fitting end to the 70th Anniversary year of Lotus and the company has one more reason to celebrate with EVO Magazine announcing that the Lotus Exige Sport 410 has been awarded Roadster of the Year 2018 in its latest issue #257.

In the words of EVO, “It’s a genuinely fabulous piece of kit, engineered with an obsessional zeal for driver entertainment and finished with the sort of care normally reserved for vehicles with far more chunkier price tags.”

Developed directly from the track focused Exige Cup 430, the Exige Sport 410 is designed to be the ultimate road drive, unrivalled in its class. Packing the advanced chassis, suspension and powertrain set-up from its more powerful stablemate, the track focused Exige Cup 430, with a recalibrated engine producing 410 hp (416 PS) at 7000 rpm and 420 Nm (310 lbft) on tap from 3000 rpm to 7000 rpm.

Boxing Day bonanza Boxing Day shopping proved to be another bonanza for retailers with spending through non-fuel merchants jumping 11.2 per cent on the day compared with last year.

The 2.5 million transactions that day through Paymark, which accounts for more than 75 per cent of electronic transactions, were worth a combined $139.5 million.

The biggest spenders were in Whanganui, up 24.2 per cent, and Gisborne, up 21.4 per cent while those in Nelson were relatively parsimonious with a 7.2 per cent increase in spending.

Those in Northland and Auckland recorded an 8.8 per cent increase.

“Boxing day is of growing significance to core retailers,” Paymark says.

Spending within the core retail sector, excluding food and liquor merchants and hospitality outlets, totalled $72.8m.

That makes it the fourth busiest shopping day of the year for this grouping, surpassed only by the Thursday-to-Saturday period before Christmas and exceeding the

$69.7m spent on Black Friday.

Home decorating stores recorded a whopping 50.5 per cent increase in sales compared with Boxing Day sales last year while sales through chemists were up 33.8 per cent, through watch and jewellery stores up 21 per cent and through sporting equipment stores up 19.9 per cent.

Sales in clothing stores were up a more sedate 7.7 per cent while furniture stores lifted sales 8.4 per cent.

“Noticeable this year, we also spent more beyond these core retailers, suggesting Boxing Day is becoming more than simply a bargain-hunting spree,” Paymark says.

Spending at food and liquor stores jumped 19 per cent while fast food outlets’ sales rose 23.3 per cent and sales at restaurants and cafes were up 17.1 per cent.

Spending at beauty and hairdresser outlets jumped 35.5 per cent.

Probably no surprise, given all this largesse, spending at recycling and refuse stations was up 46.2 per cent on Boxing Day last year.

A year after its backdoor listing, TIL Logistics has renewed the third of three contracts billed as risks to its financial performance.

The third long-term contract is with the Farmlands Co-operative.

“The renewed contract covers the North and South Islands and includes fuel transport to all Farmlands Fuel customers, including the Challenge petrol station network,” the transport and logistics company says.

The Farmlands contract with TIL subsidiary Pacific Fuel Haul was the second largest while both the first and third largest contracts were both with the nation’s largest petrol station operator, Z Energy, (the third largest was with the Z-owned Caltex network) and both were renewed in July.

All three contracts were renewed after a competitive tender process.

“We are delighted that Farmlands recognise the value in our service and relationship and look

forward to our continuing partnership with them,” says TIL chief executive Alan Pearson in a statement.

TIL’s listing profile said its top three contracts represented about 80 percent of Pacific Fuel Haul’s revenue in the year ended June 2017 and about 18 per cent of TIL’s total revenue.

Farmlands owns an 82-store network and had $2.4 billion in revenue in the year ended June 2018.

While the latest contract signing significantly de-risks TIL’s business, the company’s first year as a listed company disappointed when it missed its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation forecast for the year ended June by $2 million, posting a $26.2 million result.

It blamed the miss on a variety of factors including rising fuel costs and road closures due to bad weather.

The shares last traded at $1.50, and have dropped 32 per cent so far this year.

Record for Amazon Amazon.com reported a recordbreaking holiday season as shoppers loaded their online baskets with items from Echo speakers to Calvin Klein clothes, suggesting consumer optimism isn’t being deterred by a tumbling stock market. The internet retailer said “tens of millions of people worldwide” signed up for its Prime service, which offers free two-day shipping on millions of items as well as video and music streaming.

In the US alone, more than 1 billion items were shipped for free using Prime, Amazon said.

Shutdown expensive The US economy will take a billion-dollar hit if the government shutdown continues until the weekend, experts have predicted as Donald Trump showed no sign of backing down. Some 25 per cent of the federal government is without funding after the US Congress and the president failed to approve a new spending package. Standard & Poor’s, the credit rating firm, estimated the shutdown would shave $US1.2 billion ($1.7b) off America’s gross domestic product [GDP] every week.

Tax refund scams Inland Revenue is warning Kiwis to be aware of scammers looking to take advantage of next year’s proposed automatic tax refunds.

New Zealanders were informed recently via email about proposed changes to the tax system, but already fake emails are making their way into people’s inboxes.

Bernadette Newman, a customer segment leader at Inland Revenue, said scammers are trying to take advantage of the campaign.

“We’ve had two examples of this just this week – a convincing looking e-mail but with a couple of important details that mark it as fake,” Newman said.

The hot stock for 2019 While prospects of a more volatile, and possibly bearish market in 2019, might warrant a flight to safety for those picking stocks, it hasn’t stopped 2018’s NZX standout, a2 Milk, topping the list in our annual Brokers Picks survey.

A2 features in the choices of five out of the eight firms in this year’s survey. Despite a rollercoaster ride on the markets this year, the milk company delivered a return of 32.2 per cent in the 2018 brokers picks making it hard to ignore in 2019. It reported a 116 per cent lift in its net profit to $196 million for the June year. With plenty of speculative interest from investors in Australia the shares can surge or slump at the slightest news announcement.

But last month an upbeat AGM see it ending the year on a very positive note.

Change of luck due

By AdAm HAmilton Former top Kiwi trainer Tim Butt will be hoping stable flagbearer My Field Marshal can turn his fortunes around at Gloucester Park tonight.

Butt’s Miracle Mile winner has drawn well in the first of his three Gloucester Park runs during this raid, the $50,000 Group 2 Village Kid Pace (1730m).

Punters have already backed him in from $2.60 to $2.40 on the Aussie TAB and he looks set to snatch favouritism from comeback pacer Mr Mojito, who opened $2.20 from gate two, but is out to $2.30.

It’s been a tough week for Butt and his open-class pacers with Let It Ride and new addition, Raupakuka Ruler, both running below their best in different races on Boxing Night.

Raukapuka Ruler, who won his first Aussie run for Butt then ran second to My Field Marshal in slick time at Menangle, stopped after leading to finish almost 40m from winner Our Triple Play in the $50,000 Group 2 Shirley Turnbull Memorial (2760m) at Bathurst.

Just before that, Group 1 Blacks A Fake winner Let It Ride did his share of work, but was beaten 10.1m into third spot behind Victoria’s most-improved pacer, Rackemup Tigerpie in the $20,000 Lightning Mile at Ballarat.

They went a sizzling 1min52.1sec mile rate for the 1710m and trainer Mick Stanley has the winner on target for much better races.

My Field Marshal is looking for a change of luck at Gloucester Park tonight.

Let It Ride didn’t enjoy sitting parked, but battled away fairly.

He’s well below the horse who so dominated Queensland’s biggest race in winter and was the one-time Inter Dominion favourite.

Butt is adamant he needs regular hard racing to regain that form.

Back to My Field Marshal at Gloucester Park and he has gate five, plenty of early speed and Anthony Butt is flying across for the drive.

Aside from Mr Mojito, his main rivals have drawn outside him for the back row: Our Max Phactor (six), Our Jimmy Johnstone (seven), Vultan Tin (eight), Rocknroll

Lincoln (nine) and Mitch Maguire (10).

“It’s good to get him across early to settle in and have a run at Gloucester Park before the two big races,” Butt said.

“I’m sure he’ll run well and be better for it going into the Fremantle Cup (January 11).”

Prepared by Cambridge trainer Stephen Marsh for Cambridge Stud proprietors Brendan and Jo Lindsay, Pretty To Sea had been a narrow runner-up to Luvaluva in the Gr.3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) in autumn for Caulfield trainer Ciaron Maher, but was later sold after her form tapered off.

“This is the first horse I have trained for Brendan and Jo Lindsday,” Marsh said.

“Henry Plumptre (from Cambridge Stud) rang and asked if I would like to train for them and I nearly fell off my chair, I thought it was a prank.

“It’s great, Brendan and Jo buying Cambridge Stud and investing so much in the industry, so it is lovely to get a result for them.”

A daughter of Ocean Park, Pretty To Sea was unplaced in two trials leading into the resuming run at

Ellerslie, and Marsh is keen to add further black-type to the four-yearold’s record before she joins the Cambridge Stud broodmare band.

“Brendan and Henry bought her in Australia,” Marsh said.

“She was stakes placed and had gone off the boil and Henry called and said how about trying to turn her around and getting her right.

“They have been very patient with her. She’s had a couple of quiet trials and we brought her up to Ellerslie for a gallop before racing here.

“We thought we had her pretty spot on. We were a little bit worried about the heavy10 track, but we were all quite confident.

“Leith (Innes) rode her at Ellerslie the other day and it is a plan that has fallen into place and I am really rapt to get a win in these colours.

“Cambridge Stud did a great job, they had her looking really good when she came to me and we just kept her mentally happy and sound and she has done the rest.

“They have sent her to me to get black-type so we will certainly try to deliver that.”

Top day for Keast

A plan hatched three months ago to set a team for the Westport meeting paid big dividends for young trainer Darren Keast on Wednesday.

On his 21st birthday, Keast took five horses to Patterson Park and won with the first two of them – Midnight Sioux and Lovey Dovey Moment.

Midnight Sioux’s victory gave him his first success as a trainer when the horse took out a maiden trot on debut.

Half an hour later, Lovey Dovey Moment came off a 30m handicap to bolt away with the Edward Rennell Appreciation Trot by five lengths to give Keast his second training win.

Later Fortune Tiller and Be Mine Tonight finished third to complete a momentous day for the trainer-driver.

“Things couldn’t have gone much better really and I’m expecting them to all go very well again tomorrow,” said Keast.

Keast had a bit of a hangover yesterday, but had every right to be celebrating in Westport the night before.

“It’s not ideal being born so close to Christmas Day and while I don’t know exactly what time in the morning it was, I do know that dad [Jamie] was driving at Ashburton on Boxing Day that year and it was touch and go getting there on time.”

Each of Keast’s five runners at Westport have come to him in recent months, with Lovey Dovey Moment and Be Mine Tonight from Henrietta Westrum, the partner of Jamie Keast.

“Henrietta got a job at the prison and it was decided to give me a go with them. I had a chat to dad back then and decided to set a team for Westport as it’s a bit hard setting a team for Addington.

“Dreamcoat came to me only 10 days before Westport after being bought by Ross White for $750.

“Ross lives in Waikari and drives down to help me on the weekends, which is greatly appreciated as he brings his own pay so to speak.

“As we’d been talking about going to the Coast for months, he decided to go and get a horse for himself, so it would cap things off just nicely if we can get a result for him on the trip.”

Midnight Sioux is owned by Norm Leacock-Jones and earlier this year was in a paddock and had been registered as a hack by his father Don, who owns and trains Copperhead Rose.

“Norm has been working for me and as he is allowed a horse in work, he asked his father if he could bring him into work.

“He was supposed to be a pacer but he couldn’t pace a yard when he came to me. But he has made very rapid progress as a trotter – every hurdle we’ve thrown at him he’s flown over.”

Midnight Sioux is a five-yearold Elsu gelding and is the first foal from Load Of Fun, a Fully Loaded mare who won three races as a pacer for Jones.

Caserta topped and tailed Wednesday’s meeting winning the Alan Wicks Handicap aboard betting ring drifter Twitchy Frank then ending the day on Silentz in the Ladbrokes Handicap.

Trainer Darren Weir called on Caserta’s claim of 2kg to reduce Twitchy Frank’s 62kg when his regular go-to apprentices, Ethan Brown and Lachie King, were not available.

Kiwi Ida is sitting on a hat-trick as she chases the Timaru Cup at Washdyke today.

Credentials on the line Talented mare Kiwi Ida will chase further stakes success in today’s Listed The Craigmore Timaru Cup (1600m) and could earn herself a Group One start if she extends her winning sequence to three.

North Canterbury trainer Karen Parsons can see no more reason why the four-year-old mare can’t measure up again as she shoots for her third stakes win after the Listed Canterbury Belle Stakes (1200m) at Riccarton last season and the Gr.3 Canterbury Breeders’ Stakes (1400m) at the same track last month.

Since that win, Kiwi Ida has added the Speights 1400 at Crom-

well after flashing home from last in the hands of apprentice Rahul Beeharry.

“We had our hearts in our mouths last start and we know Chris will ride her the same way,” Parson said.

“Chris” is leading Canterbury jockey Chris Johnson, whom Parsons credits for much of Kiwi Ida’s success.

“He does all the work with her and he has done the whole way through,” said Parsons, who races and trains the mare with her husband John.

“It’s only been through circumstances that Chris hasn’t been able to ride her in her last couple

of wins, but he’s the one who has turned her into a racehorse.

“He’s made her into the professional little lady she’s become.

“I’d love to pay Chris back with a win tomorrow but it doesn’t always work out that way.”

A winner of eight of her 25 starts, Kiwi Ida is an equal $3.80 favourite for the Timaru Stakes with Kolonel Kev, while Boots ‘N’ All is the $4 third favourite.

Kolonel Kev and Boots ‘N’ All turned in meritorious efforts in the Gr.1 Captain Cook Stakes (1600m) at Trentham earlier this month and if Kiwi Ida can measure up to that pair at Phar Lap Raceway, she could also head

to Trentham for a Group One 1600m assignment.

“We’ve entered her for the Thorndon Mile but we’ll just wait and see. If she proves herself at 1600m, there are some good races down here at black-type level too,” Parsons said.

“She’s a pretty laid-back sort of customer now and nothing fazes her too much.

“She doesn’t put 100 per cent into her gallops either so we can only assume she’s come through her recent races well.

“Tina [Comignaghi, stable apprentice] galloped her the other morning and she was pleased with her so we’re happy.” - NZME

Talented sprinter Victorem can take trainer Jenny Graham to within sight of having her first million dollar earner if he wins the Buffering Quality at Doomben. The $87,000 first prize for the Buffering would take Victorem’s total to $892,000 but there are even bigger prizes on offer for the gelding.

The Buffering is a wild card race for the $1 million Magic Millions Cup and a win would make Victorem eligible to head to the big race on January 12. Win, lose or draw on Saturday it has been a good Brisbane summer for Port Macquarie-based Graham who has been campaigning in Queensland with six horses. Her team has won four races and recorded four minor placings reaping about $250,000 prize money.

Cassidy aboard Lubuk Promising two-year-old Lubuk couldn’t have a better credentialled fan than multiple Group One-winning jockey Larry Cassidy. The Chris Waller-trained Lubuk provided the run of the race at his first start when fourth in the Listed Phelan Ready Stakes at Doomben two weeks ago. Lubuk was run off his feet early and came from 10 lengths off the lead in the middle stages. He wanted to hang in the straight but finished just under two lengths from the winner, The Odyssey. Cassidy rode Lubuk and was an immediate fan of the colt. “I think he can win a good race and in the not too distant future,” Cassidy said.

“He is a really nice horse in the making.” Cassidy knows what he is talking about as he is rapidly closing in on his 2800th career victory.

Savy Yong Blonk scored an impressive win at Rotorua yesterday.

Promising three-year-old filly Savy Yong Blonk made it back-to-back wins when she took out the NZB Insurance Pearl Series Race (1400m) at Arawa Park in Rotorua yesterday.

The Jamie Richards-trained runner was sent out a dominant $1.80 favourite for the race and duly delivered despite jumping away fairly from barrier four.

Under a composed ride by Opie Bosson, Savy Young Blonk sat off the pace before being set loose in the straight, running away from her opposition to win by 1-3/4 lengths.

“She’s a nice filly who we liked at home for a while, so it’s good to see her string a couple together and hopefully she can work through to black-type now,” Richards said.

Her connections elected to bypass Christmas

carnival racing at Ellerslie over the holiday period in a bid to boost her confidence ahead of a possible tilt at the Gr.3 Williment Travel Group Desert Gold Stakes (1600m) at Trentham on January 19.

“We wanted to miss Ellerslie on purpose over Christmas and just find another soft race for her and keep her confidence up.

“She’s not the easiest to train at home,” Richards said.

Savy Young Blonk impressed jockey Opie Bosson, who belives she has the potential to add black-type to her record in the coming months.

“She has done it easy, all under her own steam, she is a filly with a lot of ability,” he said.

Taxing times on the bike

When Jason Christie won his second national road cycling championship title ahead of this year’s Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, he was hopeful a spot in the New Zealand team for the trip across the Tasman might follow.

It didn’t, and that was the start of one of the most stressful times in the 27-year-old cyclist’s career to date.

The Ashburton born and raised cyclist, who now lived in Blenheim, decided to appeal the decision and to this day it was a move he didn’t regret.

He got to the Games – although not through the appeal – but crashed early on in the road race, and now, after one of the most up and down years of his career, Christie was unsure what his cycling future held.

He said his highlight of 2018 was taking out the elite national road championship title for the second time.

Those wins were to this day, two of the things he rated as the biggest successes in his career so far.

“It was a big goal to win again to try and put myself in the frame for Commonwealth Games, and also because I love having the jersey, so to win it a second time was really special,” Christie said.

But winning that title didn’t lead to the selection for the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast that Christie hoped it would.

After he failed to make the team for the Games, he appealed the decision.

Although his appeal was unsuccessful, Christie still made the team in the end after another rider pulled out, and he said the whole experience was a really stressful time.

“To the point I thought about pulling the pin on doing the appeal.

“I didn’t want to go against athletes or anything like that, but against Cycling NZ to highlight they selected athletes with lesser results and that those selections were based on having no specific selection criteria,” Christie said.

“But in hindsight I’m glad I did it as without doing it I would’ve been a two-time New Zealand national road champion that would have been ‘overlooked’ for a spot at the Commonwealth Games.”

Competing at the Common-

wealth Games was an incredible experience, with so many Kiwi supporters there due to it being so close to home.

“The atmosphere was awesome,” he said.

“In terms of the results I’m disappointed to have crashed just 17km into the 168km race.

“It really dented my performance on the day and despite riding in the break all day and doing the work for the team by making the Aussies chase until being caught with one lap remaining, without the crash I know I would’ve been a lot better again.

“But anyway, the whole vibe around the Games and the support amongst the Kiwi athletes from across all the sports was really great.”

When it came to success in his career to date, Christie also ranked the Commonwealth Games and the resilience he showed, as well as overcoming the difficulties he did just to get to where he had, as some of his biggest successes.

Having his now mum, nana and his then girlfriend, now wife, there watching on was also something he’d remember forever.

Despite the crash which took away any chance at medalling, just making it to the Games and competing on that sort of stage was a huge feat and one he was immensely proud of.

A few months on, Christie was still training hard for whatever lay ahead of him.

Living in Blenheim, his favourite training spots were in the Marlborough Sounds, and it was rare that any two days back-toback were identical.

“The winding and undulating roads, with the mountains on one side and the bays on the other, it’s really a pretty incredible spot for riding a bike or many other activities,” Christie said.

He didn’t know what the future held but said he didn’t envision much of a cycling future in New Zealand.

“To elaborate, there really isn’t a way to have a full-time career from New Zealand. I was fortunate enough in 2016 that my team would fly me out to all the races and home again, doing maybe 18 international flights out of New Zealand in that year – which is uncommon for a team,” he said.

The team folded after that season though.

Jason Christie is currently based in Blenheim and enjoys training rides around the Marlborough Sounds.

“The bigger races are declining in New Zealand and sponsors are harder to come by, which applies to international teams right now too as this year a lot of riders are without contracts as their teams are folding.

“In terms of opportunities overseas, I’ve looked at some, but I’m not just looking for ‘a’ team so to speak, but more the right team, with a good environment, good management etc.

“I took a contract with a team last year to be able to ride/race full time for another year in the hope to tick off the goals of nationals and Commies, but the environment really wasn’t good, so I take the mindset of being happy first over putting myself into another environment like that again.”

He’d come a long way from that boy who went along with a friend – Troy McDowell – to have a go in a 16km Wednesday night race run by the Tinwald Cycling Club when he was growing up.

He headed out on his old mountain bike and managed to beat some guys on proper racing bikes, and the rest was now history.

Christie said he had fond memories of growing up in Mid Canterbury.

“I’ve had so much support from people/businesses in Mid Canterbury during those early years.

“You see people always jumping over sponsoring a successful person/athlete, but really it’s in those early years that it makes the biggest difference, and I’m grateful for the support I received from those people/businesses,” he said.

“The Tinwald Cycling Club was great too, it got me started along with a good group of young kids at that time.

“We’d have one or two training nights a week, which ended with us having chocolate bars and raspberry and coke in the club rooms afterwards.”

They’d race a few times a week and Christie said it provided an ideal platform him in the sport he came to love.

“I guess I’d refer to it as the good old days now,” Christie said.

“But there’s certainly a massive, massive step going from club racing to international racing and

then also being competitive.”

Looking back on the past few years, Christie said he didn’t really have any regrets.

“I do look back and wish I had of done a lot of things differently, whether that was with training or other areas, and despite coaching myself for the past three-anda-half years, if the person that came into my life just under six years ago that got me on the right track in terms of training properly and better guidance had of been there through the earlier years, maybe my career path/trajectory would’ve been different/better.”

But he was happy with his lot.

He had recently married his wife, a fellow cyclist, and together they spent a lot of time on cycling road trips, and last year they travelled to the USA. What the future held in terms of Christie’s cycling future, he didn’t really know.

“It almost goes without saying I’ll be lining up at the New Zealand champs again, but after that I think I owe my wife a honeymoon,” he said.

“I’ll leave it at that for now.”

By Niall aNdersoN As he turned at the top of his mark to deliver the fourth ball of his 13th over, Trent Boult had claimed just six wickets in his last 826 deliveries in test cricket.

15 balls later, he had six more.

In what was statistically the greatest test spell produced by a New Zealand bowler, Boult’s brilliance early on day two caused a complete capitulation for Sri Lanka, and put the Black Caps stunningly in command of the second test.

By the time the day had ended, the Black Caps could claim it as one of their most dominant days of test cricket.

Jeet Raval had struck 74, Tom Latham was unbeaten on the same score, Kane Williamson hit 48 and the Black Caps were sitting at 231-2, a lead of 305 runs.

It was a position possible because of Boult’s brilliance.

The lethal left-armer changed the entire outlook of the test in the space of a phenomenal 15 balls.

His six wickets in that spell was the fastest accumulation of six wickets in test history, tied with West Indian Jermaine Lawson, while no player had claimed five wickets in 11 balls in test cricket before Boult accomplished the feat today.

Caps’ first innings of 178, Sri Lanka looked likely to at least come close to a first innings lead, before Boult broke their innings, and their spirit.

He started by ending the promising 43-run stand between Angelo Mathews and Roshen Silva.

Silva edged a full delivery to Tim Southee at third slip, before Southee then took a brilliant low one-handed grab to dismiss Niroshan Dickwella.

It ensured Southee was still the man of the hour, but his strike bowling partner needed no help with the rest of his dimissals as he stole the spotlight.

The last four batsmen were all trapped lbw for ducks, with Dilruwan Perera and Lahiru Kumara not offering a shot, while Suranga Lakmal and Dushmantha Chameera had no answers for Boult’s pace and swing.

Chameera at least managed to see off a hat-trick delivery, but fell the ball after, as Boult tore through a triple-wicket maiden as part of his stunning spell of 6-4, and earned career-best figures of 6-30.

Spare a thought for Mathews, who amongst all the carnage, stood watching in disbelief at the other end as all six of his partners departed, and ended unbeaten on 33, Sri Lanka’s top score as they were rolled for just 104.

To make matters worse, Raval and Latham then proved it wasn’t the wicket which had caused Sri Lanka’s demise.

After 20 wickets had fallen in three and a half sessions, the Black Caps openers went a session and a half unbroken, adding 121 runs.

Raval brought up his first 50 in over a year in a quality innings, but fell short of a maiden test century, inside edging Perera off his pads, with the catch snaffled up at short leg by Kusal Mendis.

Williamson got a top edge on an unnecessary uppish cut to fall short of his own 50, but Latham held strong, only offering one chance in his unbeaten 74 as he aimed for a second straight century.

Ross Taylor added an quick unbeaten 25 before stumps as Sri Lanka’s chances of victory were left in dire straits – vanquished by a Boult from the blue.

Meanwhile, Jimmy Neesham and Doug Bracewell are set to make their returns to international cricket.

The pair have been named in the Black Caps’ 13-man squad for the three One Day Internationals against Sri Lanka, starting in Mount Maunganui on January 3.

If he was to play in the opening ODI, it would be a year to the day since Bracewell last played

international cricket, while Neesham hasn’t made an appearance since an ODI against Bangladesh in June 2017.

Both players have been picked on the basis of solid form in the domestic one-day Ford Trophy and impressive performances for New Zealand A in their recent one-dayers against India.

There is also the wish from the New Zealand camp to give new players a chance to prove themselves ahead of the ODI World Cup, starting in May. “With the World Cup now on our radar there is a need to look at different players over the home summer,” said selector Gavin Larsen.

“We want to win the one-day series against Sri Lanka, and we want to gain as much new information as possible while doing so.

“Doug and Jimmy have performed well on the domestic scene and showed during the recent New Zealand A series against India A that they’re ready for international cricket.”

Opener Martin Guptill returns to the Black Caps squad after a calf injury ruled him out of the tour of the United Arab Emirates, while Colin de Grandhomme has been rested following an extensive workload on the cricket pitch over the past 12 months.

Celtic claim a thriller Brendan Rodgers hailed Scott Sinclair after his hat-trick helped Celtic to a 4-3 Scottish Premier League win over Aberdeen at Pittodrie which saw five goals in the final 14 minutes.

The winger put the Hoops ahead after six minutes but that advantage was cancelled in the 24th minute when Dons forward Stevie May scored from the spot.

Sinclair restored the Hoops lead in the 76th minute but in the 83rd minute the home side drew level again from the spot through Sam Cosgrove.

Substitute Odsonne Edouard made it 3-2 before setting up Sinclair for his third and although Lewis Ferguson reduced the leeway again in the 90th minute the visitors took the spoils to take them three points ahead of Rangers with a game in hand before the trip to Ibrox on Saturday.

“He wants to be in there to score.

“He has done it since I knew him at 16 years of age as a young player,” Rodgers said of Sinclair.

“He loves that type of occasion and all his finishes were very good.”

BRENNTON ON TARGET Brentton Donaldson has qualified to defend his Lowry Cup Singles crown.

Ashburton Bowling Club’s Brentton Donaldson has qualified to the knockout stage in his defence of one of Mid Canterbury bowls most prized trophies, the Lowry Cup. The up and coming player will be joined by 10 other players in the knockout stage of the tournament after the qualifying rounds last Sunday at the Ashburton Bowling Club. The entire tourna-

ment was supposed to have been held over the course of last weekend, but Saturday’s weather saw no play get under way with the qualifying stages pushed back to Sunday.

Donaldson did it the hard way to get the required three wins from his four matches.

He began well winning his first match convincingly before losing out in the second round which

meant he had to win his final two games in order to make it through to the next stage of the competition.

Playing in Section 1, Donaldson was joined by four others in the post-section stage.

Methven’s Brent Mayson claimed four wins from his four matches to march through unbeaten while Alan Hill, Gavin Eder and Graeme Bishop also picked

up the required three wins.

Over in section two of the competition, Richard Kane waltzed his way through with three wins before not having to play his last round match while both Mat Bassett and John Drayton did the same.

Reg McGarry did it the toughest way of anyone after he lost his first-round match to Drayton before claiming wins in his final

three matches.

Roger Gutberlet and Jeff Nowell also managed to get the required three wins and will be there when the post-section action begins at a yet to be confirmed date in the New Year.

This weekend will see players back on the Ashburton green for the Cotula Cup holiday tournament which is held over both Saturday and Sunday.
