Firefighters across the district have avoided any major incidents across the Christmas period, but were kept busy, including a confusing call-out for the Methven brigade on Christmas Day evening. Firefighters had initially responded to reports of a house fire

at 10.57pm and were supported by other units from around the district who were stood down after it turned out to be a report of a missing person, a Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson said. Police confirmed they were called to Methven following the report of a missing person, who was located a short time later.

Police were also called to assist firefighters in the early hours of Wednesday morning following a report of a suspicious building fire on Chertsey Kyle Road and police confirmed they will be making enquiries. Rakaia fire chief Tyrone Burrowes said the fire was not serious, but their initial thoughts were that the fire was suspicious,

so fire investigators were called. “It was a pretty quick job for us, but we were largely there to keep things ticking over until the investigators arrived,” he said. The fire was initially reported by a member of the public and Burrowes praised their actions. “It’s excellent to know that there are people out there who are keeping an eye out for these

sorts of things and ready to ring us when they spot something that’s not quite right,” Burrowes said. Firefighters from Ashburton and Rakaia were also kept busy with two vegetation fires that were attended for less than 30 minutes, but that should remind people to be cautious as the weather warms up.
