Gangs face off in Netherby park BY DAISY HUDSON
DAISY.H@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Ten people armed with axes, baseball bats, and golf clubs, were arrested following a violent gang brawl in Ashburton yesterday. Armed police responded to multiple reports from members of the public of a gang brawl at a park on Davis Crescent yesterday afternoon. One person required hospitalisation and others received minor injuries during the stoush, which police believe was between rival gang associates. Members of the public who contacted the Guardian reported seeing as many as six police cars racing to the scene. According to police, two groups
had arranged to meet at the park and began fighting with various weapons, including an axe, baseball bats, golf clubs, and sticks. While the specific gangs were yet to be identified, Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield confirmed one faction was wearing red while the other was wearing blue. Ten people have so far been arrested in relation to the incident, he said. “They have all been charged with taking part in a riot, that is the most fitting charge at this time while our investigations continue,” he said. All of those arrested were “battered and bruised”, while one person was taken by ambulance, escorted by police, from the police station to Ashburton Hospital with head in-
juries. Mr Banfield believed at least two people had managed to evade police at the scene, and inquiries as to who they were and what their involvement was are continuing. Most of the offenders were known to Ashburton police, he said. Two vehicles were also confiscated from the scene as part of the investigation. The two groups had to be separated, with some of those involved appearing in the Timaru District Court this morning, while others will appear in the Christchurch District Court. “We want the public to know we dealt with it quite quickly and swiftly, and they’re in jail,” Mr Banfield said.
