THE INDEPENDENT VOICE OF MID CANTERBURY

Coach Moore Blues bound BY ERIN TASKER

ERIN.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Just one game in to the new season, it has been announced that the man who led Mid Canterbury to Heartland rugby glory in 2013 is leaving. But coach Glenn Moore hopes to add a second Meads Cup title to Mid Canterbury’s name before he heads north to pursue his professional rugby coaching ambitions. Moore was yesterday named as the new Blues Super Rugby assistant coach, responsible for the forwards and the contact area, for the next two years and he’s looking forward to working alongside former All Black great and current Blues coach John Kirwan. For the next couple of months though, his focus remains firmly on Mid Canterbury and defending the Meads Cup in the Heartland Championship. That was one of his conditions in accepting the job; he wanted to see his current job through to the end first. It will be Moore’s second foray into Super Rugby. He was the head coach of the Highlanders from 2007-2010 and he said he never lost that passion and desire to get back to the top level, but the timing wasn’t

right, until now. “I’ve really enjoyed being hands on with the Mid Canterbury boys and that probably reignited the spark again. “We’ve started to achieve some good things and they are a great group of boys to work with and I’m grateful for them for giving me the spark to get back into the top level again.” Moore said he was excited about the opportunity to join the Blues coaching staff and get back to coaching at an elite level. “I was really impressed with JK’s (John Kirwan’s) vision and passion for the franchise. “That helped make it an easy decision to join the coaching team. I’m really looking forward to relocating up north and getting stuck in.” Coaching Mid Canterbury had been a case of coming back to his roots. Moore was born in Auckland but grew up in Mid Canterbury, and played for Mid Canterbury himself. “I still very much regard Ashburton as home,” he said.
