About 20 people who spend their working lives caring for others, took one hour off yesterday to take their call for a fair pay deal into the public arena. Ashburtonâs IDEA Services support and service workers joined hundreds of their counterparts around the country in withdrawing their labour for one hour, to highlight their fears over job security and their concerns over their failed pay talks. years, others had less service, but they were all united in their call for fair treatment from their employer. Ashburtonâs Elaine Aldridge said the strike action was a last resort for staff. For carers, taking time away from clients was not something they would do unless
they were desperate, she said. âWeâre striking for fairness in the workplace, for respect and stability,â she said. The last payrise staff received was two-and-a-half years ago. Bargaining on a new agreement began between the union Etu, and IDEA in October, but the re-
sponse had just been one ânoâ after another, Aldridge said. Because their clients relied heavily on carer support, most staff had juggled taking part in the protest action around work. Aldridge had come off an overnight shift and was due back at work that morning.
As well as concerns over their stalled pay negotiations, staff were concerned at the ongoing service reviews that were cutting work hours for staff in many parts of the country. Ashburton has not yet undergone a review. If yesterdayâs strike action did not yield a positive result in terms of negotiations, it would be repeated next month, this time for two hours, she said.
