Ashburton’s local body politicians will be looking at a 2.5 per cent pay rise come July 1. In the annual Remuneration Authority pay review, the district has been handed out a cash pool of more than $500,000 from which to pay its elected representatives, but for most their new wage will do little more than buy them three cups of coffee a week. With his 2.5 per cent pay increase Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay’s pay will move from $100,200 to $102,705, a rise of around $48 per week. Rank and file councillors will earn an extra $615 from the new financial year.
For spending around 30 hours a week on the job they’ll receive $25,215. The remuneration authority has changed the way it pays local body politicians, moving from a pool system to a base salary approach. It also provides extra payment for a deputy mayor and chairs of council committees. If councillors agree with the funding formula, deputy mayor Darryl Nelson for his final four months in office, will see his salary rise by 2.5 per cent from $30,728 to $31,518 while committee chairman Alan Totty, Neil Brown and Stuart Wilson will receive the same increase. At today’s council meeting council-

lors will discuss the proposed divvy up of funds and will also decide whether to distribute the full funding pool this year in pay increases or whether it will retain some for another year. It also has the option of distributing its money in a different way to recognise other positions of responsibility. In the year to June 30, 2005, mayor of the day Bede O’Malley received $63,657 for the district’s top job while his rank and file councillors received $14,246 for their work. In 2008 his salary had increased to $71,067 and his councillors’ to $17,028. By 2012 Mr McKay was earning $87,900 for the year and his councillors, $18,618.
