Firefighters always on call

The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade are on call all day, every day to make sure there are always enough staff in an emergency.

Chief fire officer Alan Burgess said the force doesn’t have a roster so their firefighters are on call 24/7.

He said they need to have everyone on call so they can always crew the fire appliances when the siren goes off.

Usually weekends are all right for numbers, but during working days it can be a bit hard as the volunteers could have work or family commitments keeping them busy.

“You’re always going to have people on holiday or sick or any other thing. At times during weekdays it can be a struggle to get the numbers,” he said.

Days like Wednesday can be particularly hard when things get busy.

Burgess said when the volunteers are called out to a job their employers can suffer loss of productivity.

Self-employed people may also lose out on business, especially for builders or tradies who will have to leave their work site.

“The unfortunate thing is that you can never know what is going to happen,” Burgess said.

The brigade was called out five times one day recently and Burgess said it was a little bit out of the ordinary.

A number of the callouts on Wednesday were false alarms, where, either by a technical fault or accidental activation a fire alarm went off.

Angus McKay and Donna Favel are both hoping to become the district’s mayor for the next three years at the October 8 election and we are offering the community an opportunity to ask those candidates the hard questions.

Members of the Marist New Zealand Colts Under-23 Rugby Team made plenty of new friends when they visited Mid Canterbury this week, visiting St Joseph’s and Netherby schools.

The team gave away new sports equipment to excited children, then spent time having fun in the school yard with games and skill sessions.

Netherby principal Phil Wheeler said the visit was well received by his students, who were mesmerised by a team haka.

“They lifted children up to win a ball from a line-out throw and played outside with the new sports equipment they gifted to our school. This was one of the best visits we have had from any group and we would have them back in an instant.”

He said the team was interactive, singing and playing with the students and were great ambassadors for the game of rugby.

On the field, the Marist side was also successful, beating a Mid Canterbury Colts selection 65-0 under lights at the Ashburton showgrounds.

Guidance counsellor: Chill out over career choices

Guidance counsellor Teri Nichol has one word for parents when their school leaver says they have no idea what they want to do in life: Relax.

It’s normal for teens to wonder if they want to go to university or polytech, get a job or take a gap year.

Nichol, a careers counsellor at Ashburton College, says employers aren’t necessarily after a degree, but they are looking for initiative and a can-do attitude.

Canadian-born Nichol has a line of students at her door most days as Year 13s consider their options after leaving secondary school and Year 12s think about subject choices for their final year.

She said career planning was all about helping students make successful transitions as they moved through school and beyond. While students developed an awareness about themselves in terms of interests, skills and ambitions, they often didn’t know about the variety of options available to them when they left.

“My aim is to encourage students to develop confidence, insight and competency in making plans and taking action. Being able to open their thinking about new ideas, stressing that they need to be prepared to work hard, and understanding that the career pathways of today are not as direct as they might have been in past generations are important aspects of our discussions.”

Nichol said top skills that employers wanted students to have included communication skills, the ability to work in a team, literacy and numeracy skills and attitude.

And parents, as major influencers of their teenager’s decision, needed to have an open mind, and be up-to-date and accurate with their information.

Nichol is a trained careers counsellor but also talks from experience, having raised three children herself and watched them succeed in their own way.

Christchurch loves labradors Sherlock and Berlin are four and eight-year-old chocolate labradors. They are two of more than 4600 labradors in Christchurch, the most popular dog breed this year.

Labradors are by far the most popular breed, with staffordshire bull terriers in at second, and close behind in third is bichon frise.

Owners Terry Hope and Marietjie Sandford say the best thing about having labradors is “they’re beautiful natured and well behaved”, although they can be a handful at times.

“They have a beautiful nature, but they will eat anything that is lying around. I have to give him a lot of exercise, but otherwise, yes he’s well behaved,” Mrs Sandford said.

Ms Hope said one time during a dinner party she took off her shoes and put them in another room while the guests and her were eating.

“Halfway through the meal though I heard a chewing noise coming from the next room, and went to find him (Sherlock) ripping up my new expensive shoes,” she said.

New statistics released by the city council on the number of dogs in the city and their locations, shows that St Albans, Spreydon and Belfast are the top three most popular suburbs for dog owners.

The total number of dogs in the city as of August 16 is 31,859 dogs, which includes all registered dogs in the city, as well as some that have been registered previously, but are yet to be registered for this year.

About a quarter of dogs in the city live in north-western suburbs homes and the eastern suburbs are not far behind. Together the two groups of owners make up half of the city’s registered dogs.

About 19 per cent live in southeastern households, 17 per cent in south-western suburbs, and the other 13 to 14 per cent live elsewhere around the city.

Easter Sunday shopping?

One of the first jobs the new team of Ashburton district councillors will face after the October local body elections could be deciding how new Easter Sunday shop trading hours will be applied in the Ashburton District.

On Thursday Parliament passed legislation that sees decisions on Easter Sunday trading put squarely in local authority hands. The bill was passed by a narrow margin and ends years of attempts to rewrite Easter trading rules.

Last year Ashburton councillors agreed with the Shop Trading Hours Amendment Bill which would allow shops to trade on Easter Sunday but they did not

want individual local authorities to be forced to develop their own rules around this. They wanted the decision to be made by Local Government New Zealand.

Parliament, however, has put decision making squarely back in individual councils’ hands and that, mayor Angus McKay said, could create confusion for shoppers as different districts could have different rules.

McKay said he can’t help but be sceptical about the success of local shopping rules because of the chaos that came after the government gave local authorities the power to set their own liquor licensing hours.

“They handed that back and look where we are. We’ve made ours but they’re still not in place.”

The council’s local alcohol policy had been signed off locally but was still held up in national appeals.

Before Easter Sunday was made a trading free-for-all in the district, McKay said he would want to see the community consulted.

Council chief executive Andrew Dalziel suggested the desire for open trading on Easter Sunday would be more keenly sought in tourist towns, rather than smaller towns such as Ashburton.

Minister of Workplace Relations Michael Woodhouse said it had taken 25 years to get to this point and he was happy with the outcome.

“Local business associations

and other organisations may choose not to open even if they are able, so this is flexible, it’s sensible and it doesn’t compel anybody to do anything,” he said.

The bill has attracted criticism from a number of quarters with many critics saying the government had passed the buck, preferring individual councils to take the flak from communities rather than taking that flak themselves.

Mayors in some tourist areas, however have welcomed the change, with Rotorua Mayor Steve Chadwick saying Easter trading was likely to be a local election issue.

After council elections in October there was likely to be a formal community consultation.

Brains ‘collide’ for Daffodil Day quiz

The brainy team from Ashburton Online continued their domination of the annual ANZ Daffodil Day Quiz this week.

Kieron and Darion Gray, with their children Cathal and Eimear, and friend Nathan Milne, took an early lead over the 75 teams in the quiz on Thursday night and held out until the end, though a tiebreaker and ultimately a game of paper-scissors-rock was needed to separate the Taxmanian Devils, who came second, from Gloriavale Rejects.

The night was a winner for the ANZ and the Mid Canterbury Cancer Society, with over $15,000 raised.

by Mid Canterbury businesses, who donated prizes that were skilfully auctioned by Craig Harrison.

Contract awarded An Auckland-based company, Market Economics Ltd, has won the bid to carry out the Ashburton District Council’s economic development strategy and action plan work. The job was put to tender with bids ranging from $56,000 to $90,000. A panel of five council staff evaluated those bids and awarded the contract to Market Economics Ltd. This work will carry over into the new council term, after the October 8 local body elections.

New layer of checks A new layer of checks will be needed for Ashburton District Council staff next month as local authorities will then be required to implement a tougher regime around vetting people who will work with and around children in council-funded roles. The safety checks will be required for social and support services such as community outreach services and learn-to-swim programmes. They will involve full identity checks, a police clearance and a risk assessment. The regime will be phased in from September 1.

Ashburton’s civic centre and library build project WHAT OUR COMMUNITY THINKS

When Guardian staff went out on the street to gauge public opinion on Ashburton’s civic centre and library build project, the Eastfield option came out top of the list.

The council is looking at four sites for its new civic and library complex and commissioned Opus Architecture to assess the strengths and weakenesses of each of those options.

The four sites are a new build or a renovation and extension on the current Havelock Street site, two options on Baring Square

east, where the Methodist Church and old county council building currently stand, the Balmoral Hall site on Cameron Street and land in Eastfield on the corner of Cass and Tancred streets.

In a street poll of 12 Ashburton people, four preferred the Eastfield option for the new civic centre, but with some conditions.

One respondent said the council would need to have the parking sorted out first and another said it was the best option if it couldn’t stay at its current posi-

tion on Havelock Street.

Another two liked the idea of it being in Baring Square and one person was for it to remain on Havelock Street but be renovated.

However, four of the respondents didn’t know about the proposed project at all and three of those weren’t interested.

Guardian reporter Colin Engelbrecht asked people on the street whether they knew about the civic centre and library build project and what their prefered site would be.

Eirian Davies said where it currently is (Site 1 option a).

Flu hits older Cantabrians hard this year The flu has hit elderly Cantabrians hard in the past month, with the highest hospitalisation rates from the virus since 2012.

But Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Alistair Humphrey said the situation could be even worse if not for the high number of people who had been vaccinated.

So far this year, 318 people have been hospitalised with the flu, including 182 last month alone.

In the same time last year, 226 had been hospitalised.

But the rates of flu-like symptoms reported in the community are lower this year than they were last year.

Last year, the flu vaccination was not effective, because it was targeting a different strain of flu to the ones which proved most common.

Dr Humphrey said the type of flu being seen in Canterbury was different to the strains in other parts of the country.

“Had Canterbury not had such high rates of vaccination, it is likely that we would also have experienced high rates of infection from other influenza strains, like the rest of New Zealand,” he said.

Canterbury had the highest vaccination rate in the country this year, with 176,690 vaccines distributed as of June.

Age Concern Canterbury chief executive Simon Templeton said a lot of older volunteers had to take time off over the past few weeks because they were down with the flu.

“We were actually talking about it only three weeks ago, saying it has been a quiet season, and then everyone seemed to come down with it at once,” he said.

But he believed the vaccine was working.

“If younger people get vaccinated it is protection for the older people in our community,” he said.

Youth ballet company ‘stunning’

In their first tour since being established by Canterbury Ballet this year, the Aotearoa National Youth Ballet have decided to introduce the public to a less known ballet.

Twenty-one of the Christchurch-based company’s dancers will be touring the lower South Island and will be performing La Bayadère.

The youth ballet’s artistic director Taisia Missevich said the school gives pre-production dancers the opportunity to perform on stage before auditioning for professional ballet companies. “They are all absolutely phenomenal, there is so much dedication and passion there,” she said.

Missevich described La Bayadère as a ballet about the struggles between wealth and love and between dignity and class.

The ballet was originally staged in Russia in 1877 and was choreographed by Marius Petipa to music composed by Ludwig Minkus.

Missevich said the reason La Bayadère was chosen for the tour is because it is one of the less performed ballets.

Saving a slice of history Mid Canterbury people are being asked to fork over a fiver next month to save a slice of history in Antarctica.

T

he Antarctic Heritage Trust is embarking on a major and somewhat unusual journey, Expedition South, to help raise $1 million to save Sir Edmund Hillary’s hut in Antarctica and maintain it for the next 25 years.

Expedition South is a 2012km tractor journey that started near Auckland this week and will pass through Ashburton next month.

The finish point is Aoraki Mount Cook on September 19.

Hillary’s Hut, also known as Hut A or the Trans-Antarctic Expedition Hut, was the first building constructed at Scott Base and is where Sir Ed’s team began their historic Ferguson tractor expedition to the South Pole in 1957.

Sir Ed’s son Peter Hillary, who himself has skied from Scott Base to the South Pole, says Antarctica and the hut were very important to his father.

“Dad often talked about his time in Antarctica and the trip to the South Pole . . . he saw it as one of his major achievements, saying

Watson said Sir Ed’s decision to go to the South Pole was a bold move.

“No-one had been overland since Captain Scott in 1912. Sir Ed was on the ice supporting the trans-Antarctic expedition and his decision to push on to the pole with three Ferguson tractors was controversial. But of course they made it – the first trip overland to the South Pole by motor vehicle.”

Expedition South will travel the same distance that Sir Ed and his team travelled from Scott Base to the South Pole, 2012 kilometres.

Watson says it will be a hard slog. “While our team won’t be on the ice and will have far more comforts than Sir Ed and his team had, it’s still going to take them nearly four weeks and they’re likely to face all kinds of weather.”

Along the way, Expedition South will be stopping at schools, Hillary hotpsots and events to collect donations from the public.

The tractors will arrive in Ashburton on September 15, leaving the next day to head to Geraldine; they will visit Lauriston and Carew Peel Forest schools.

“We are calling on Kiwis to give a fiver. The $5 note has Sir Ed’s face on it so we can’t think of a better use for it than saving his Antarctic legacy.”

Peter Hillary hopes New Zealanders will dig in and help save the hut.

lso known as Hut A or the TAE Hut, Hillary’s Hut was the first building at Scott Base.

It was built in 1957 by a team under the leadership of Sir Ed and used by Scott Base staff until the 1980s.

The hut held a special place in the original Scott Base. It was the mess – a recreation area and kitchen – for the 23 men who wintered over that year and also housed Sir Ed’s office, where he slept on his bunk bed.

The hut was a home away from home for the men, with a lino floor, formica tables and chairs and armchairs. It had a large library of 1000 books (including a set of Encyclopaedia Britannica) and large paintings by Marcus King hung on the walls, as well as a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The hut will be 60 years old in January 2017. It has a leaking roof, melt-pools forming under the floorboards and memorabilia within are showing signs of damage or corrosion.

We are motorhome-friendly Ashburton is now officially a motorhome-friendly town.

And achieving that status now puts Ashburton, along with Methven, on the map for the thousands of motorhome owners who drive their way around New Zealand every year.

One of the main requirements for motorhome-friendly status was having good facilities, not only for camping, but also for motorhomes with waste disposal facilities. Ashburton now meets that criteria, with the recent installation of a motorhome waste disposal unit on East Street.

This week New Zealand Motor Caravan Association resource management assistant Garry Green presented a certificate and signage to council acknowledging Ashburton’s new status.

“Ashburton has 373 members of the association and this will be a direct benefit to each of them,” Green said.

Council service delivery group manager, Neil McCann, said the new facility was proving to be a real asset for both the locals and for travellers.

“The new waste disposal unit is easily accessible with close proximity to other services.”

The Motorhome Friendly certificate presented to the council brings Ashburton into a network of 40 other towns around New Zealand deemed welcoming for motorhome users. NZMCA developed the scheme to offer significant economic benefits to participating towns and assure association

members of towns’ openness for motorhomes and caravans.

Ashburton’s previous waste disposal site in Tinwald will be closed due to accessibility and safety concerns. The new site is located on East Street, opposite the Mobil Service Station, and was commissioned earlier this month.

Corrections aims to help women Changes have been introduced to support female inmates at risk of family violence when they leave prison, the Department of Corrections says.

Most women prisoners are, or have been, victims of family violence, which may be intergenerational and an entrenched part of their lives, said Corrections Minister Judith Collins.

The changes aim to identify women at risk of family violence early in their prison sentences so safety planning and appropriate support can be organised.

“For many of these women, prison is a place of relative safety compared to what they may face at home,” Corrections said. “There is a lot that Corrections can do to support them while in prison and prepare for their eventual release back into the community.”

Corrections said it was working with police to share information about family violence risks and prison case managers were working with family violence agencies.

Mongolian horse race not Ashburton man Bob Jones has just completed the 1000km Mongol Derby, albeit from the back of a truck. He talks to reporter Sue Newman about the experience of watching his son Gareth complete an event that is recognised as the longest and toughest equestrian race in the world.

B

ob Jones doesn’t mind admitting his son Gareth is an adrenalin junkie.

He comes from the most normal of Kiwi families, had the most normal of Kiwi upbringings, but from the day he left school, Gareth has chased challenges, lived on the edge, pushed the envelope and courted danger.

And last month he took up a challenge that only the most foolhardy would, riding in the Mongol Derby, the world’s longest equestrian endurance race – 44 men and women, 30 horses each, eight days and 1000km of some of the world’s most remote and rugged terrain.

And along for the ride (in a truck) were Gareth’s dad Bob and sister Fiona.

Back in Ashburton, Bob just shakes his head when he talks about the event “Who would ever have thought Gareth would ride a horse for 1000km, but his life’s pretty random really so this is right up there in the

odd and random stakes,” Bob said.

The latter-day Ghengis Kahn left school, flew out of Ashburton and joined the British Army at 17, rising through the ranks to become a commander and taking part in the first Iraqi conflict as an observer.

A few years down the track Gareth headed home, believing he was ready to settle into a life that was far from the world’s battlefields. He wasn’t “He wasn’t home long, he couldn’t settle and decided to go back and join the British SAS,” Bob said.

For seven years parents Bob and Jean worried about their son, wondered whether he was safe and waited for each phone call to say he was back at base.

Eventually the challenge of being part of the world’s most elite armed service team began to pall and Gareth looked for other challenges.

He found those in a package that catapulted him into the world of glamour, movie stars and the life-

styles of the rich and the famous.

His first commission as an independent private security agent saw him on location in Morocco – his client – Angelina Jolie.

His client list could be the Oscars nomination list, but to Gareth they are not famous people, they are just people he enjoys working with, Bob said.

He might have moved on from the harsh challenges of the SAS where he regularly pushed his mind and body to the limit, but the Mongol Derby made it clear he’s never lost the desire to feel adrenaline pumping through his

body, he said.

When he phoned his father asking if he wanted to go to Mongolia, Bob asked – “what for?”

He was floored when Gareth replied he was riding in the Mongol Derby, riding stocky Mongolian horses across remote steppeland.

“I’d never heard of it, so I Googled it, rang Fiona and said what do you think? She said ‘yes’ and we were in.”

Bob flew from New Zealand, Fiona from England, meeting in the Mongolian capital, Ulaanbaatar.

Gareth had flown in earlier from his home in Ireland and was already

four days into the derby, somewhere in the wilds of Mongolia.

ust 44 riders were accepted for the derby and that acceptance came with some tough conditions, one of which meant Gareth had to drop about 20kg in weight.

Riders had to be no more than 100kg – saddle and personal gear included.

Riders had to be completely independent and at night had the option of staying with the local nomads or camping out.

What is the Mongol Derby?

I

t is an endurance equestrian race over 1000km through the Mongolian steppe and is acknowledged as the world’s longest horse race.

The first derby took place in 2009 and has continued annually since then. It is a multi-horse race, modelled after the postal route established by Genghis Khan in 1224. This was the world’s first long distance postal system, based on a network of horse stations. The derby similarly incorporates 25 horse stations and rest stops along its 1000km.

In addition to enduring the distance of the trek, challenges faced by the participants include a high probability of injury associated with riding 25 different unfamiliar and “semi-wild” Mongol horses, travelling through remote and unmarked territory in a variety of landscapes, exposure to harsh elements, physical discomfort and exhaustion, and rules of the race, such as restricted riding hours allowed each day.

In the 2016 race, there were 21 men and 23 women playing the role of the messengers and representing 13 countries.

The exact course changes every year and is kept secret until shortly before the race begins. The terrain will invariably include mountain

passes, green open valleys, wooded hills, river crossings, wetland and floodplains, sandy semi-arid dunes, rolling hills, dry riverbeds and, of course, open steppe.

The entry fee is $13,000, and provides the rider access to 30 Mongolian horses, a support team, pre-race training, and access to the support stations along the way. Riders must change horses every 40km at the support stations.

Along the way there are vet checks to monitor the condition of the horses and the vets may impose time penalties if the riders push their horses too hard along the trail. To gain entry as a competitor, each rider must demonstrate that their riding skills are strong enough to endure the harsh terrain of the race. The horses themselves are semi-wild and may not cooperate with the rider, adding one more level of difficulty to the race.

Riders will spend 13 to 14 hours a day in the saddle, and the race lasts 10 days.

To complete the race is an accomplishment in itself, as only half the racers usually finish the race in any given year.

This year’s derby was won in a three-way tie by William Comiskey aka Dingo of Australia, Heidi Telstad of Canada and Marcia Hefker Miles of New Mexico.

“It’s very third world I can tell you, it was in the middle of nowhere. Tents were pitched anywhere, twice in the rain.

“There was no sanitation, no running water and we didn’t shower for five days. And toileting – you walked 100 metres away and squatted. You’d never be without toilet paper and baby wipes,” Bob said.

When they ate with the locals, the diet was simple, it was fine, he said, apart from one of the Mongolian staples – fermented mare’s milk.

“That’s shocking.”

Bob and Fiona followed the race by truck, but they would go many hours without seeing any riders, even longer without catching a glimpse of Gareth.

“The roads were bloody awful, even the main roads. Twice we got stuck on a hill and it was a real challenge for us too, a hell of a challenge really, eight days in a small truck.”

Riders were given a GPS with checkpoints logged in. Horses were changed at each point, but it was up to the riders to find the best and fastest way between points.

Inevitably there were mishaps and

accidents.

“Gareth’s first one came before he even started. His horse threw him and he had to make the walk of shame back to the start. He had three more, but he wouldn’t talk about them. He only said, ‘the horse fell, not me’,” Bob said.

Welfare of the horses was paramount and each mount was vet checked before it set off on the next 45km leg.

For the riders, making it to a checkpoint first was important – first in got the best horses, last in ended up spending hours on the back of one that was either slow or

bad tempered, Bob said.

As the days ticked by, Bob and Fiona saw many horses and riders galloping by but they didn’t see Gareth until the final day.

“I was delighted to see him in on the last leg. We went out with a film crew and were able to watch him coming out of the trees with six others as they raced to the finish.”

Until he became part of the team following the race, Bob said he had no real idea how tough the derby would be. He now has an immense respect for the riders who had the courage to take part.

“The objective might be to win, but really it is to finish. The winners took seven days to finish, the rest took eight, but out of the 44 there were 14 who didn’t make it to the end.”

Some of those were defeated mentally, others were battered physically – head injuries, broken ribs. And not all of the horses made it either.

The first two out of three places

went to women riders, who skills aside, had the natural lightweight advantage, Bob said.

Gareth finished about 16th.

“Making it to the end was huge, 1000km, it’s the world’s longest and toughest race. It’s a high-risk event.”

At the race’s end riders were presented with a blue scarf and were then required to liberally douse their horse with milk from head to tail.

That might have signalled the end of the gruelling event, but Bob said it took many riders several days to recover, emotionally and physically.

The Jones family flew back from base camp to Ulaanbaatar and spent three days in comparative civilisation before flying back to their respective home countries – Bob and Fiona to the comforts of their homes in New Zealand and England and Gareth back on a film location, keeping some of the movie world’s rich and famous safe.

They belong to local nomadic herding families and breeders along the 1000km route.

Horse welfare is a high priority and all race rules put in place are designed with the horses in mind.

Ham with cashew, lime and honey crust Half a 100% NZ ham cooked on the bone 125g broken honey roasted cashew nuts (smash with a rolling pin) 2 T Dijon mustard 2 T brown sugar Grated zest and juice of 1 lime ¼ C marmalade 1 egg yolk

Step 3: Place the ham on a rack in a lined roasting pan (use baking paper or foil) and press on the nutty coating.

To crust and serve cold – bake in oven at 180°C for 35 to 40 minutes, cool, cover and store in refrigerator until served.

To crust and serve hot – bake in oven at 160°C, allowing 20 minutes per kg.

To cook on a lidded barbecuepreheat barbecue to 200°C, place ham tray in centre of barbecue, cover with lid, allow barbecue to return to temperature (15 minutes), turn gas to low and cook for 1¾ hours or until hot through to bone.

Watson comes full circle

Phil Watson will come full circle when he makes his competitive debut for Mid Canterbury in their opening Heartland Championship clash against North Otago at the showgrounds today.

The former Ashburton College 1st XV flanker played for Mid Canterbury throughout the age-groups while turning out for Allenton at junior level, but has played all of his senior rugby in Christchurch.

Watson studied at the University of Canterbury and now teaches PE and Health at Christchurch Boys’ High School - where he is also Master in Charge of rugby.

The 32-year-old has now amassed more than 200 appearances for Shirley since making his debut in 2003.

Watson has also played three seasons for Canterbury Metro and represented Canterbury under-19s shortly after arriving in Christchurch, but his career hasn’t all been plain sailing.

He tore his anterior cruciate ligament while playing for Mid Canterbury under-18s in 2001 before tearing it twice more in 2004 and 2005 while on duty for Shirley.

But the three ACL reconstructions didn’t dampen Watson’s love of the game.

“I think I just love the game that much that I couldn’t give it up,” he said.

So when the opportunity arose to pull on the Mid Canterbury jersey at representative level, Watson wasn’t about to pass it up.

“I was talking to a couple of mates on Facebook, they said Mid Canterbury were looking for players of origin,” he said.

“I flicked an email to the Union and (co-coach) Craig (Dunlea) gave me a call and organised a bit of a trial.”

Despite being new to the Hammers senior ranks, there’s plenty of familiarities for Watson.

One of them is his captain, Jon Dampney, who also skippered his Ashburton College side in the inaugural season of the Press Cup.

Watson will offer his co-coaches, Dunlea and James Jowsey, plenty of options.

He can operate in all positions from lock to No. 8 at the back of the scrum, and is happy to play wherever he is needed – describing himself as a ‘team-man’.

“I say to my coaches ‘where you need me I can go,’ I’m just happy to be out there really,” he said.

His Heartland Championship debut will also be Mid Canterbury’s sixth defence of the Hanan Shield with North Otago gunning to take it back to Oamaru for the first time since 2012, but Watson is confident of a Hammers victory.

“The environment’s really good and everyone gels really well,” he said.

“It’s special to put the jersey on, so I think we can do the job and do the district proud.”

Former All Blacks wing Jeff Wilson said he was “disappointed” in what he saw in Saturday’s test and hopes for better tonight.

“I like contests, but that wasn’t a contest.”

It’s a view echoed by former All Blacks captain Richie McCaw. “I hope that it is a bit closer, because you don’t want to see big one-sided results for the top teams,” McCaw said.

Marist a big ask for Mid Canterbury Colts side

Mid Canterbury Colts locked horns with a touring New Zealand Marist Colts team under the lights at the Celtic Rugby Grounds on Thursday night.

The Hammers Colts lost out 65-0 to some of the country’s finest under-21 Marist players, but Mid Canterbury Rugby Development Officer Jason Ree, who acted as team manager on the night, saw plenty of positives.

“There were 100 per cent posi-

tives, it was really good exposure for them against some class opposition,” he said.

Ree also credited Colts coach Kyle Gray for a job well done.

The Marist Colts kicked off their tour with a 15-15 draw against the Heartland West Coast team in Greymouth on Sunday before downing a Hokitika invitational team 76-0.

The Marist squad, which consists of one player from all of the 29 New Zealand Marist clubs, will face Marist Albion Colts in Christchurch today.

Thinking

Maleli Sau’s exceptional debut season in the blue of Rakaia was rewarded with a Mid Canterbury call-up after his side’s Watters Cup final draw against Southern last month.

His inclusion to the representative set-up will not have been a surprise to local rugby fans following an impressive individual campaign with Rakaia.

Sau arrived in New Zealand from his native Fiji in 2012 to attended Tu Toa School in Palmerston North on a rugby scholarship.

After impressing at 1st XV and club level he was soon named in the Manawatu Turbos Development Group.

He then moved south and was called upon by Canterbury rugby sevens coach Jason Tiatia earlier this year.

Sau, who can operate in the midfield and wing, then joined up with Rakaia – where he became a devastating addition to their backline.

The Celtic faithful will vividly remember Sau’s contribution during the two teams’ Watters Cup semi-final clash.

Rakaia led 12-6 at halftime before Sau arrived with his boots tucked under his arm just after the interval.

He had headed straight to the game from Christchurch Airport after returning from Fiji and quickly put Celtic’s final aspirations on hold for another year with two quick-fire tries.

Sau’s fine form continued in the final against Southern where he scored Rakaia’s second try of the afternoon and created two more.

The two teams went on to share the cup after a 26-26 draw, but Sau’s display had sent another clear message.

The 22-year-old’s performances in the latter stages of the competition may have highlighted an already impressive season, but he had long been on co-coaches James Jowsey and Craig Dunlea’s radar.

“He’s dangerous on the wing, a true finisher, but he’s also comfortable at centre – he’ll be a threat wherever he plays,” Dunlea said.

“He’s been on the radar since the first Rakaia game, it didn’t take much watching to see he had a lot about him.”

Despite having talent in abundance, Sau’s approach to the game is refreshing and is fuelled by a quiet determination.

“I just want to continue to follow my dream,” he said when asked what his individual goals for the Heartland season were.

Cheika: Criticism from home ‘hurts us’ Wallabies coach Michael Cheika admits criticism from ex-players hurts but concedes the team has to grin and bear it until their fortunes turn around.

Cheika’s comments come after former Australia winger Clyde Rathbone essentially challenged the team to be realistic about their chances in tonight’s second Bledisloe Cup Test against New Zealand, writing in his column for rugby.com.au that “blind

faith in one’s ability is a slippery slope to delusion”.

“The truth is pitiless, indifferent to all but the purity of its own self evidence. And the truth is that the All Blacks are a much better team than the Wallabies,” wrote Rathbone, a 26-cap Wallaby who retired in 2014.

Cheika said Rathbone was entitled to his view – particularly in light of the Wallabies’ disastrous 42-8 defeat to the All Blacks last

week in Sydney – but warned if the shoe was on the other foot, he wouldn’t necessarily do the same.

“That obviously hurts us, doesn’t it,” he said.

“When it gets tough, it’s very easy for people to jump on and put the boot in and we have to take it because we haven’t performed.

“But at the end of the day, no matter what sport Australia’s

playing at, I’ll be supporting them no matter what.

Cheika said the team would not be using Rathbone’s words, or any other external comments, as motivation for the clash at a sold-out Westpac Stadium, which Australia is expected to lose heavily.

Axe a team from Australia, SA A secret review of the much maligned Super Rugby competition has recommended Australia and South Africa axe one team each.

The Sydney Morning Herald has revealed the recommendation for a new 16-team Super Rugby model was presented to the Australian Rugby Union board last week.

The news outlet claimed other proposed models were also being looked at including the possibility of South Africa losing two teams.

Another version actually advocates expanding the tournament even further.

The revelation comes as the Sanzaar joint venture plans out its next 10 years around a competition that is lucrative yet deeply unpopular among fans over its current 18-team format.

Consultancy group Accenture is driving the review but is still at least two months away from settling on a preferred structure.

It was reported that Accenture has just completed a lengthy consultation process with 28 stakeholders, including the 18 current teams, the national unions from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Argentina and Japan, plus the host broadcaster from each country. The news outlet claimed

Centurion wicket will favour NZ’s seam attack New Zealand have moved on to prepare for the second cricket test against South Africa starting tonight, but the Durban debacle rumbles on.

The report of match referee Andy Pycroft has been forwarded to Cricket South Africa, who face a warning or a fine not exceeding $US15,000 ($20,500) over the state of the Kingsmead pitch, on which just four sessions of play were possible before the outfield was deemed unsafe.

Pycroft has officially rated the ground “poor” – hardly a Stop The Press pronouncement – and there may be longerterm ramifications for Durban’s cricket officials.

There have been concerns over the SuperSport Park outfield at Centurion ahead of the second test, too. Kyrgios ready for better draw

BY DARREN WALTON Nick Kyrgios is hoping for some luck of the draw as he spearheads one of Australia’s most promising US Open charges in decades.

In Kyrgios, in-form Bernard Tomic and former women’s champion Samantha Stosur, Australia have three top-20 seeds in New York for the first time in 35 years.

Crucially, Kyrgios has earned a top-16 seeding, guaranteeing the 21-year-old 14th seed avoids a top-eight rival until at least the quarter-finals.

In a record that not even tennis titans Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal could boast, Kyrgios has never lost to an unseeded opponent – let alone a lower-ranked player – at a grand slam.

Frustratingly, though, Kyrgios also has a history of striking the big guns prematurely.

In his 13 majors since making his main-draw debut as an 18-year-old at the 2013 French Open, Kyrgios has lost four times to Murray and twice each to Wimbledon runner-up Milos Raonic and dual grand slam semi-finalist

His other five defeats have come at the hands of 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic, former grand slam finalists Tomas Berdych and David Ferrer and seeds Tommy Robredo and Benoit Paire.

Last year he lost to Murray in four sets in a horror first-round draw at Flushing Meadows.

“I love Muzza (Murray) but if I never saw his name near mine in a draw for the rest of my career I’d be happy,” Kyrgios said ahead of today’s draw in New York.

“I’ve actually had some rotten draws, not just in slams but in general.

“But at the end of the day you’ve got to beat who is in front of you, which I’ve managed to do a lot of.

“There’s no point complaining about it. It is what it is. But I would definitely welcome some easier draws.”

With two titles and more topfive scalps than anyone apart from Djokovic in 2016, Kyrgios is feeling good entering the season’s final major.

“Really happy with where I am physically and mentally,” he said.

“I haven’t had the most taxing of American summers, which is a positive and a negative, as I’m fresh but hungry coming in.

“I’ve had a really good training week leading in and now I’m on site I’ve upped the competitive side of things.

“So yeah, I’m happy.”

Tomic, fresh off his win over 2014 runner-up Kei Nishikori in Cincinnati, has been seeded 17th, while Stosur is the women’s 16th seed, giving the 2011 winner the same protection in the draw as Kyrgios.

Sporting extravaganza never fails to delight T

here’s an Olympic-sized hole in my agenda this week, after the extravaganza in Rio wrapped up on Monday, following a fortnight when the best of the best of world sport overtook our screens almost exclusively.

I know I’m not alone in quickly falling into the habit of eschewing the verbal delights of Hoops in the morning and noted sportsman Pistol Pete in the afternoons for the glare of the idiot box, as it quickly became a required fix to find out how many medals our brave gals and guys were gathering up in and on the water, on the various tracks and everywhere else they battled it out for gold, silver and bronze.

And of course there were moments.

Hundreds of them, as the world’s best athletes gave it their all, in search of Olympic immortality.

Make no mistake, the Olympics are the pinnacle.

Every sport has its world championships and regular top class competition, but for the last four years it’s all be aimed at one target, and that was Rio. Some of our own top-class athletes had been bringing home plenty of silverware over the past few months/years and headed to Rio with inflated hopes of Olympic glory, but found out that a whole lot of folks had been keeping their powder dry for the big one.

It’s hardly a criticism though; as Steven Adams has been

pointing out in the last week nobody in America knows the tiny country we come from even exists, so to come home with our best-ever medal haul in the face of the cream of the world’s sportspeople is simply a massive achievement – and the nine fourth placings suggests it could have easily been so much better.

One of those fourths was from our own Lauren Ellis in the cycling omnium.

Lauren went into the final event, the points race, a mile behind the medal contenders, and wasn’t on anybody’s radar as any sort of threat.

But the girl from Hinds produced surely the ride of her life, leaving it all out there as she said in an exhausted but still euphoric state in a post-race interview.

In a magnificent performance over 100 gruelling laps she kept the hammer down, and against the very best riders in the world Lauren actually lapped the field three times, racking up enough points to just miss out on a podium spot.

It’s one of the biggest ‘what ifs’ of the whole event; just a little bit of luck in the running in earlier events and there was definitely a medal, possible of a very nice colour!

Early in the piece there was an event that produced plenty of emotional hand-wringing afterwards – the sevens.

There was a torrent of tears as the women fell at the final hurdle, and that may well be the last time we get a look at a

medal in that code.

That may sound over-dramatic for a country so good at rugby, but the rest of the world would have been watching carefully as the Aussies won gold with a precision display that our girls just couldn’t match, and that’s the template everyone else will be using for Tokyo.

Both our men’s and women’s teams missed that bus, and no matter what plans we put in place now, every other big contender will be doing it better.

Also destroying any enjoyment that may have been had at the sevens was Keith Quinn – surely he must have paid Sky to be there.

In a downward-spirally career, the women’s final must still have been his worst effort in years.

In a sport that’s lightning-fast and furious, the commentator has to keep right up with the play; instead Quinn was busy telling us who were the mothers in the New Zealand team, and then he drifted off to talk about a Rocky movie that he’d seen.

At one point he forgot who New Zealand was playing.

At least in the men’s final he was playing second fiddle to another commentator, but with

Fiji playing he still managed to get in his most infuriating habit – slowly and very clearly enunciating every syllable of the Fijians’ names, just to make sure we knew how good he was doing.

Sort of like six-year-olds do.

Here’s a tip from way out in left field – learn the name, say the name.

Just as every other commentator in the world does, in every game of every sport, without any drama whatsoever.

The final word went to mountainbiker Sam Gaze.

The young athlete, who followed Anton Cooper home to create one of New Zealand’s finer moments at the Glasgow Commonwealths, was confident of a medal in the last event contested by a Kiwi in Rio. He’d done the hard yards, mentally and physically he was up for a super performance, but the fickle gods of sport conspired against him, and two punctures and mechanical issues meant his day was done without even a shot at the title.

A shattered and distraught Gaze said: “It’s no one’s fault. I’s just the way it is.

“Sometimes you’re the hammer and sometimes you’re the nail and unfortunately today I was the nail.”

His obvious distress at not holding up his country’s honour was worn large on his sleeve, and, despite him not adding to the medal tally, made one exceptionally proud to be a Kiwi supporting the team.

Rojas signed a two-year contract with Victory on Thursday, linking up with the same club who helped him attract global attention.

Back turned on $7m Swimming sensation Katie Ledecky is passing up on a estimated $7 million in endorsements. The reason: She just wants to be a normal college kid. “I’ve always wanted to swim collegiately and have that experience,” Ledecky, 19, told ESPN Radio. “I think it is going to be a lot of fun to be on a team with some really great friends and great swimmers and also just go to class with them.” Ledecky, who begins her freshman year at Stanford University soon, won an impressive five medals at the Rio Olympics: four gold and one silver. That kind of haul could have made her a millionaire if she left the amateur ranks, one expert estimated.

Lochte not free yet Brazilian police have asked for fresh legal action against Ryan Lochte in a bid to force him to return to Rio de Janiero. The city’s DEAT – the specialist tourist police squad – has asked prosecutors to give the disgraced swimmer a choice of returning to make a full and truthful statement in court, or being put on trial in his absence.

The development - reported by ESPN Brazil - could see Lochte sentenced to up to six months in a Brazilian prison.

World record in grasp Eliza McCartney, the pole vault world at her feet, will soon be reaching for the stars. The world record stands at 5.06 metres, set by two-time Olympic champion Russian Yelena Isinbayeva in 2009 at Zurich. McCartney’s personal best, which she matched in winning bronze at Rio last weekend, is 4.80m. However her coach Jeremy McColl is adamant the 19-year-old from the North Shore has the world record in her.

“We’ve already talked about it.

It is something she’s capable of doing,” McColl said. “She’s on a steep learning curve in terms of her development, but it’s definitely down the pipeline.”

Shopping around Silver Ferns shooter Cathrine Tuivaiti is shopping around for a new franchise after parting ways with the Northern Mystics.

Tuivaiti, the Mystics last remaining foundation member, announced on social media on Thursday night that she would not be returning for the Auckland side next season.

“It has been one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make, but feel it is time to move, grow and be different,” Tuivaiti posted on Instagram. “No matter where I end up, I will always bleed blue.”

Australia’s Diamonds are bracing for a physical and high-octane affair when they take on South Africa in today’s netball Quad Series opener.

The world champions go into their match in the double-header at Auckland’s Vector Arena as strong favourites over the world No.5 outfit, having thrashed them 63-31 in the 2015 World Cup group stages.

But defender April Brandley, touted as a potential replacement for absent skipper Laura Geitz, was cautious of a side coached by former Australian mentor Norma Plummer, expecting them to be fit, well-drilled and chomping at the bit.

New South Africa captain Bongi Msomi will provide the energy in midcourt, while young gun Lenize Potgieter racks up the points in the shooting circle.

“It’s going to be a very fast-paced game, obviously they’ve had a lot

of growth through the team,” the 26-year-old Brandley said. “It’s important to get the key things out there that we want to achieve.”

Stand-in skipper Clare McMeniman, who will marshall the Diamonds’ defensive third, was expecting the unexpected from South Africa.

The 31-year-old hoped to make the most of her leadership experience, having already ushered the side through January’s 3-0 whitewash of England.

“We don’t have as much exposure to them but they’re only going to have strengthened in their skills and line-up,” McMeniman said.

Plummer said her side knew the challenge awaiting them.

Her troops would gain valuable experience from confronting the world’s best.

“We’re certainly not running around with rose-coloured glasses on,” Plummer said.

EMMA ON THE RUN

Did I really say yes to a half marathon?

F

or those who don’t know me, I am Emma. Thirty something French girl, now officially a ‘friwi’ (that’s my new nickname at work as I got my New Zealand citizenship a few months ago).

I have been living in Ashburton for the past seven and a half years. I was a barmaid at the Tinwald Tavern when I first arrived (lots of funny memories from my time there that I am better to keep for myself!) and for the past six years, I have been working in the advertising team of the Ashburton Guardian helping people promote their businesses – which I love doing!

A couple of months ago, I was talking to one of my clients and she told me she was training to run a half marathon mid-November in Queenstown. I thought: “Wahoo! Good on you!”

Enthusiast as she was, a rush ran through my body. She sold it to me on the spot! And I am the salesperson here – it is hard for people to sell me things. I reckon we are the hardest customers!

That night I went to the gym to meet my great friend and gym buddy Zara and I said to her:

“let’s run the Queenstown half marathon!” Zara looked at me, her eyes wide open, and said: “What? Are you crazyyyy?”

Well maybe I am … I told her that it is exactly what we need.

Out of shape – I haven’t run long distance for a few years now – and far ‘too cuddly’ – I have put on too many kilos – I understand why it sounds like a mad idea!

But after spending the past few months at the gym with minimum results, I know a goal is what we need.

An objective to get fit and lose this extra weight!

On Monday, my 12-week training starts … I am determined – I will run 21kms without stopping or walking! But I must admit I am also scared (if you knew me, you would know I don’t really like failure) but very excited to see where this journey is going to take us.

Next Saturday I’ll let you know how my first week of training goes … no lies, only the truth.

Man City, Gladbach cruise into champs

By Duncan Shaw Manchester City and Borussia Moenchengladbach have cruised into the Champions League along with Copenhagen and Dynamo Zagreb.

However Ajax surprisingly crashed out of yesterday’s playoffs 4-1 in Rostov-on-Don. The winners join Celtic, Monaco, Porto, Ludogorets and Legia Warsaw, who clinched places in the playoffs, in the Champions League draw.

A reserve-packed City side – England keeper Joe Hart making his first appearance of the season – beat Steaua Bucharest 1-0 at home, to go through on a placid 6-0 aggregate.

Hart is reportedly poised to leave City with the Manchester club close to signing veteran keeper Claudio Bravo from Barcelona.

Hart had a peaceful night of little activity, with feeble Steaua rarely giving him problems.

“That was a really special night for me,” Hart said.

“We all know there is a situation going on. This is a special place for me, I’ve made no secret of that. Situations occur in foot-

The game in Manchester was something of a formality, given City had won the first leg 5-0 in Romania last week.

The only goal came in the 56th minute, when Fabian Delph headed in a centre from fellow

reserve Jesus Navas.

Meanwhile in Germany, Moenchengladbach thumped Young Boys 6-1 with hat-tricks from both Raffael and Thorgan Hazard to cruise through 9-2.

In Cyprus, APOEL almost forced extra-time against Copenhagen. The hosts were lead-

ing 1-0 thanks to a strike from Pieros Sotiriou, only for Copenhagen’s Federico Santander to equalise just four minutes from time and give the Danes a crucial 2-1 aggregate triumph.

“That was a very important goal for me to score,” a euphoric Santander said.

“If we had not got that goal then the tie would have gone into extra-time and anything could have happened then.”

The surprise of the night was four-times Euro champions Ajax’s 4-1 meltdown in Rostov, who have never managed to reach the Champions League before.

Serdar Azmoun, Aleksandr Yerokhin, Christian Noboa and Dmitry Poloz all scored for slick Rostov, who then had Fedor Kudryashov sent off.

Davy Klaassen pulled a late goal back for Ajax but it came far too late to save them from a humiliating exit.

Meanwhile in Salzburg, Dynamo Zagreb battled out a 2-1 win in extra-time to go through on a tight 3-2 aggregate.

The first leg in Zagreb was a 1-1 draw.

Valentino Lazaro gave Salzburg the lead with an early strike, only for Zagreb’s Junior Fernandes to force extra-time by making it 1-1 with just three minutes of normal time left.

El-Arbi Hilal Soudani won the game with a crucial strike five minutes into extra-time.

Easter Sunday trading a bad joke Sue Newman

he Government has shown absolutely no spine over the issue of Easter Sunday trading.

Not only has it refused to take a stand, it’s taken the soft option, passing the buck to local authorities. All it has done is open the door, but it’s left it to the country’s 70-odd local authorities to be the gatekeepers.

This has been done under the guise of allowing communities to write their own rules according to their community needs.

It’s ridiculous that it’s even gone that far. We have so few days now where shops are closed, so few days when employees can guarantee they’ll have a day off work to spend as they please.

The whole issue of shop trading hours needs an overhaul. We don’t need more opportunities to shop, we need fewer opportunities.

We need to see the return of the great Kiwi weekend. As a nation we’ve been driven to follow the lead provided by much of the western world, adopting the open-all-hours attitude towards business. Along the way we’ve lost so much that has been a part of our Kiwi way of life.

How much worse off were we when we shopped during the week and spent the weekends on leisure?

Weekends were family time.

More people played sport, more people volunteered to referee, coach or manage sports teams, families spent more time with families and life was a whole lot slower and more centred.

Now entertainment for many is a day at the mall (God forbid), spending up large with money they don’t really have. Sports teams struggle to get enough players because of weekend work commitments and kids’ teams fall over because there aren’t enough willing adults to support them. Families don’t spend enough time together.

How ever you look at it we’ll now lose one of the very few days we have left where shops cannot open. No matter how much our local council might want to make a no trading on Easter Sunday bylaw, the demands of the national retailers will be too hard to resist.

They’ll give in and one of the last significant “family” days of the year will disappear.

I don’t doubt the experience of the local real estate agent quoted in your leading article, but I do doubt any comment coming from the real estate sector as they are the ones that benefit the most out of the project of the Eastfield development, it might be location, location location or is it sell, sell, sell?

I have not met anybody yet to oppose the choice of site to establish a new council building and library, that being Baring Square east – Methodist Church/ old county council site.

What better place to go to work or visit the council or the library than this site, to look out on the park of Baring Square, a fountain, town clock or statue of one of our inspirational forefathers. All of this set lying to the sun and yet we still can look though the oak trees along the railway and reflect on the sacrifices made dur-

ing conflicts on distant shores.

The main comment I come across is “how can we save the old county council building?”.

Well I’ll leave that for the consultants and architects and, ultimately, the public, to decide.

It would be nice to save this historic building, but practicality has to prevail.

The town is empty of people shopping. There seem to be ample carparks. Is this due to retail development on the outskirts of the CBD or the introduction of large national retailers and the internet?

In the future libraries will be a place to store archives, as people use electronic media and ereaders etc. People won’t need to come to town to pay bills.

Most people use internet banking for paying bills now. Nor will we have the need to go to the library. So will shopping malls become the meeting place for street kids? Are they the ghettos of the future?

NZ education lacks a vision

i! You with the morning breath and the socks that should have been put out to wash three days ago.

And you who just went out to get the paper and looked at the neighbour’s garden for the third time this morning and muttered that their lack of tidiness is bringing down your house value.

Do you know why we as Kiwis are such great travellers? Have you got any idea as to why we have itchy feet and a yearning to explore beyond these windswept shores?

I’ll tell you – it’s because we’re taught that way. Here’s how it works. Little Kiwis are put into groups based around their age.

For about every 24 little Kiwis, a big Kiwi who specialises in teaching them how to walk, is attached to them.

These groups are then put together, based roughly on their geographical location and then one big Kiwi oversees the whole group.

They all start walking around, for up to six hours a day. Sometimes the walking is easy, other times the walking is difficult, but for most of the time the little Kiwis chug along, being encouraged or helped or even disciplined by the special walking Kiwis.

The special walking Kiwis use praise to let the little Kiwis know that they doing well at this walking stuff and if they keep practising for the next 12 years of their life they will be a really good walker.

The big Kiwi, who is in charge of this entire group, often spends time talking to the special walking Kiwis, the parents of the little Kiwis, other big-in-chargeof-group Kiwis and sometimes even the super big Kiwis who are

Now that’s why we are such great travellers.

Actually that doesn’t matter, but I want you to take a moment away from your Marmite on toast and think about one of the most crucial elements that

What is the point of learning to walk, learning to travel, learning to be a traveller, if there is no reason as to why you are doing this and what you are aiming for.

New Zealand education does not have a vision. We simply recreate what has happened to us as adults. Nothing is new in education, it is simply a continuous upgrade of what has happened before.

Last year, our education minister recognised that there was no single vision statement that captured what we are aiming for in this $11 billion-a-year public-

What is missing from that silly little explanation? Think about why we travel, why we want to move beyond our borders.

Our curriculum has a vision for every young New Zealander and our Ministry of Education has a vision for their organisation. ERO has a vision for themselves, the New Communities of Learning have visions, but as a nation we do not have a vision as to what education should do for this country.

I’m not one to promote myself, but I must say that on January 28, 2014, I wrote an opinion piece (published by this paper) that began with a statement that our education system lacks vision.

So the fact the minister points this out is not new, however, she did initiate an update of the education act and that included putting together a vision for New Zealand education.

Now here is what gets my Department of Education undies in a knot tighter than the All Blacks’ grip on the Bledisloe Cup – the minister is now reviewing funding for the whole sector, special education and possibly even the idea of future online schooling, all the while we have no established vision.

Surely a funding review should happen after a review of the education act is in place and any decision regarding funding supports the aim of New Zealand education. Apparently not.

How can funding for schooling in New Zealand be reviewed when the actual purpose of education is not known?

Are we teaching children to be ongoing learners, or to be moral citizens, or to be high-earning taxpayers, or to be communityminded, neighbourly-loving, Guardian-reading, Marmiteeating Kiwis?

Without vision, any review of any of our education systems is like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic – pointless.

CHRISTIAN COMMENT

The Bible says we should make a joyful noise – singing, dancing and playing instruments – and over the years churches having been doing that in very many different ways from David with his harp, to the guitar, drums and keyboard ensembles of today.

And of course each church and religion has its own unique tradition and style. A small community church I attended in Northland

had a grand piano, some drums and sang old songs to modern popular tunes. Very refreshing, simple and uplifting.

However, many of our hymns are 300 and more years old, their themes and theology are out of date and the language is archaic, meaningless to many. My greatgrandfather, an Irish Presbyterian, would only stand and sing the psalms saying that hymns were only written by man. I wonder what he would have thought of today’s songs of praise.

Let us sing and praise God with cheerful voice I enjoy church singing and music whether it be the rousing Standing on the Promises of God, which makes me feel like marching up the aisle, or the quieter worship songs like Be Thou my Vision, oh Lord of My Heart, as well as the hundreds of hymns and songs of praise that uplift the spirit when sung together as a congregation.

Singing and music is a major component of church services.

We ask for “a thousand tongues to sing our Redeemer’s praise” and call for “All people on Earth to sing to the Lord with cheerful voice”.

on Praise Be, not a smile among them. The second on the Hope channel was a group of young people in a snow-covered landscape. The singers were backed by violins, cello and a trumpet. Everyone’s body language expressed joy in their music and song.

So let us sing “with cheerful voice” praising and thanking God with happy faces and a full understanding of the words we are singing because that might be the most memorable part of that day’s service.

Air NZ rides the tourism boom Air New Zealand has ridden the tourism boom and staved off increased competition to deliver the best fullyear earnings in its 76-year history.

Earnings before other significant items and tax was up 70 per cent to $806 million in the 12 months ended June 30 while pre-tax profit of $663 million increased 40 per cent, the Auckland-based company said in a statement.

the airline ended the year with customer satisfaction at record highs, staff culture continuing to improve, and the best financial results in its history.

“Alongside connecting New Zealanders and Kiwi businesses with each other and the world, we employ 11,300 staff, will pay the government around $260 million in total dividends and will pay income tax of around $200 million for the year.”

But the outlook is less rosy with increased competition from a growing number of international carriers adding capacity in response to New Zealand’s tourism boom and the threat of rising fuel prices.

Due to those factors, the airline has forecast operating earnings for the 2017 financial year in the range of $400 million to $600 million.

Aircraft capital expenditure is expected to be $2.1 billion over the next five years.

SkyTV earnings per viewer fall as programme costs rise

BY PATTRICK SMELLIE The cost of maintaining the most compelling sports, television series and movies rose 11.6 per cent to $331.1 million in the year to June 30, says pay-TV provider Sky Network Television, taking the cost of programming to 35.7 per cent of total expenses, compared with 32 per cent the year before.

That was a primary driver behind a year in which total operating costs rose 10.1 per cent on the previous year, while average revenue per customer fell slightly to $78.63, from $79.54 the year before.

For the year to June 30, the broadcaster turned in net profit of $147.1 million, including $13 million in one-off due diligence ahead of its proposal to merge with Vodafone’s New Zealand business, down from $171.8 million the year before, on total revenues that rose fractionally to $928.2 million.

The Vodafone merger is intended to place Sky on a footing to compete with lower-cost and proliferating alternative broadcasters using the internet rather than proprietary technology to deliver programming.

Operating earnings before interest and tax, depreciation and amortisation were their weakest since 2012, at $325.3 million, including the one-off merger-related costs. That compares with ebitda of $379.8 million in the 2015 financial year and $336 million in the year to June 2012. Total dividends have been maintained at 30 cents per share for the year, with a 15 cents final dividend due for payment on September 16.

In a commentary to shareholders, chief executive John Fellett

said the rising cost of premium content was “ironic”, given the current global over-supply of TV content.

With a record 425 original scripted series in production in the English language this year and a deflationary overall economic environment, “one would expect the price of content to hit an alltime low,” said Fellett. “Sadly, that has not been the case.”

Instead, Sky had been in an “arms race” with a proliferation of new competitors offering streaming internet broadcasting services in direct competition to Sky’s traditional model of delivery through satellite and set-top boxes.

That forced Sky to decide what programming it valued most and led it to “lock down” longterm rights to sports broadcasts controlled by the SANZAR international rugby competitions, cricket, the NRL rugby league championship, and Australasian netball.

The largest is a five-year deal with SANZAR, with increased programming costs negotiated in the past three years flowing into both the last and the current financial year, he warned.

For entertainment programming, “gold standard” shows such

as Game of Thrones and True Detective from the HBO studio were must-haves, while “the one studio you would not want to lose to a competitor during a difficult time would be Disney”, Fellett said because it owns the Star Wars and Marvel franchises, and “great movies in general”.

For day-to-day ‘linear broadcasting’, “we have protected Discovery, Viacom and Disney,” he said.

Fellett questioned the commercial viability of both local and international broadcasters of Over-the-Top (OTT), or internet streaming services.

The largest OTT player, USbased Netflix, had declared a smaller profit than Sky’s in its last financial year, at $US40.8 million on revenues of $US2.1 billion. In an apparent dig at Spark New Zealand’s Lightbox OTT start-up, he said some of Sky’s new competitors “get excited about creating new business models to deliver content and then they have to go out and buy content to test their model”.

Internet-enabled pay-TV watchers were not as “shareholder friendly” as traditional Sky subscribers, said Fellett, noting they could switch between OTT providers at will. However, they provided their own connection infrastructure, saving costs of installation and customer service.

In the case of new OTT services launched by Sky itself, such as NEON and Fan Pass on-demand services, the company was finding only 3 per cent of their users had been Sky customers in the past, allaying fears to date that the company might cannibalise its own customer base.

EpiPen ties cut

Miners kill govt minister Striking miners in Bolivia kidnapped and beat to death the country’s deputy interior minister after he travelled to the area to mediate in the bitter conflict over mining laws, officials said.

Government Minister Carlos Romero called it a “cowardly and brutal killing” and asked that the body of deputy minister Rodolfo Illanes be turned over to authorities.

Illanes was savagely beaten to death by the striking miners, Defense Minister Reymi Ferreira told Red Uno televi-

sion, his voice breaking.

Earlier, Romero had said that Illanes had been kidnapped and possibly tortured, but wasn’t able to confirm reports that he had been killed by the striking informal miners, who are demanding the right to associate with private companies, among other issues.

The fatal beating follows the killings of two protesters in clashes with police, deaths that likely escalated tensions in the strike.

Illanes had gone to Panduro,

130 kilometres south of the La Paz, to open a dialogue with the striking miners, who have blockaded a highway there since the beginning of the week.

Thousands of passengers and vehicles are stranded on roads blocked by the strikers.

Officials say he was taken hostage by the miners on Wednesday. Earlier Illanes said on his Twitter account: “My health is fine, my family can be calm.” There are reports that he had heart problems.

Bolivia’s informal or artisan

miners number about 100,000 and work in self-managed cooperatives. They want to be able to associate with private companies, which is prohibited. The government argues that if they associate with multinational companies they would cease to be cooperatives.

The National Federation of Mining Cooperatives of Bolivia, once strong allies of President Evo Morales, went on an indefinite protest after negotiations over the mining legislation failed.

3 killed in crossbow attack Nepal accident kills 20 At least 20 people were killed and another 17 hurt when bus drove off a highway in Nepal and plunged into a river on Friday, police said.

Police office said the bus rolled about 100 metres down the slope and crashed into the fast-flowing Trishuli river near Chandibhanjyang, about 120 kilometres west of the capital, Kathmandu.

Police and villagers were helping the injured and pulling the dead from wreckage, which was mostly submerged in the river.

Police are investigating the cause of the pre-dawn accident.

Road accidents in mountainous Nepal are generally blamed on poorly maintained vehicles and roads.

Earlier this month, an overcrowded bus veered off a mountain trail in eastern Nepal, killing at least 33 people and injuring 28 others.

Three have been killed in an apparent crossbow attack in Toronto, Canada.

The victims, two men and a woman, were found in a residential street in the suburb of Scarborough. Two were already dead by the time emergency services arrived and the third died after being taken to hospital.

A fourth person has been injured, but their condition wasn’t immediately known.

Constable David Hopkinson told the Associated Press all three victims had what appeared to be crossbow wounds and a crossbow was found on the floor nearby.

Another officer, Constable Jennifer Sidhu, said there were other “things” found in the area that could have been used in the incident, but she refused to say what.

A 35-year-old man has been taken into custody.

Mr Hopkinson said it was too early to say whether the shooting was intentional or accidental.

Police were not aware of any imminent danger to public safety in the area, he said.

A covered body lies covered in front of a house in Ontario where three people were killed in what Canadian police are saying is a homicide that may have involved a crossbow.

thing like that,” Jerome Cruz said. “Then I heard another middle-aged man coming toward that screaming person and telling him to be calm, be quiet, things like that. Then I saw a lady coming out of the house running towards them.”

Other neighbours told CP24 that they never imagined something like this could happen in their neighbourhood.

Saying she is “disappointed, saddened and deeply concerned” by the price hike of the EpiPen, actress Sarah Jessica Parker has cut ties with the company that makes the emergency allergy treatment.

Parker was part of a short campaign with pharmaceutical giant Mylan N.V., maker of the EpiPen. She was never a spokeswoman. The company is facing heated criticism about the list price of an EpiPen twin-pack climbing to $608 over the past nine years. Parker took to Instagram to distance herself from the company and urged it to take swift action to lower the cost to be more affordable for whom it is a life-saving necessity. A representative for the actress confirmed the statement was accurate.

Dodo bird for sale The dodo bird is extinct, but one collector can now have their own dodo skeleton.

Summers Place Auctions is selling a rare composite skeleton of a dodo bird, a creature once found on the island of Mauritius. It comes from a collector who compiled the bones from private collections and auctions in the 1970s and ‘80s. Summers Place director Rupert van der Werff says this is the first time a nearly complete skeleton has come up for sale since the early 20th century.

There’s no guide price for the skeleton.

Sailors hunted the dodo into extinction in the 17th century, and the bird has come to symbolise man’s harsh impact on the natural world.

A rich and powerful group The world’s 10 highest paid actresses earned a combined $US205 million over the last year, according to Forbes’ annual list of actress’s earnings. But these women collectively earned less than half than their male counterparts. The combined earnings of the 10 highest-paid actors totalled $US456.5m. Yes, even the super rich and famous experience a wage gap. Forbes tracked earnings before taxes and fees between June 1, 2015 and June 1, 2016. Ninety percent of the women on the 2016 Forbes list supplemented their pay from acting gigs with major endorsement deals, according to Forbes. Actresses, as a group, are also younger than the topearning men.
