Ashburton’s rental market has taken a huge U-turn, with more renters now looking for homes than properties available.

In just two months that mar-

ket has changed from one where renters could be choosers, to one where the shortage was so dire, renters are being forced to take what they could, real estate agent Trevor Hurley said.

The swing has been driven by

the arrival in town of seasonal workers and it’s a pattern that shows up most years to some extent, Hurley said.

Vacant properties might be few, but the market was still a long way from the situation several years

ago where landlords were holding open homes to view properties and, in some cases, then adjusted rental – upwards – according to demand.

Ashburton fuel prices driven down by competition

Ashburton motorists are benefiting from competition between service stations driving the price of petrol down.

At a time of skyrocketing fuel prices, the town boasts petrol and diesel that’s cheaper than many other areas, by four to six cents per litre.

Yesterday morning, the town centre petrol stations of Mobil, Z, BP and Caltex, were all charging 236.9 cents for 91 octane, and 174.9 cents for diesel.

This is lower than the national price of 240.9 cents for 91, and 180.9 cents for diesel, which was set on Monday by the fuel companies when they raised prices yet again. It comes before a 3.5c/l excise tax to be added nationwide next month.

AA petrol watch spokesman Mark Stockdale said the national price is typically charged in

South Island main centres such as Christchurch and Dunedin.

He said while the more expensive national price was what some of the brands in Ashburton would probably want to charge, they were most likely being restricted by price following.

This practice involved one retailer moving the price up or down and the others choosing to follow or match that price.

“A good example of this is the lower price of 236.9 in Ashburton compared to elsewhere in Canterbury,” Stockdale said.

“If other brands were charging the national price, motorists would soon see that they could save four cents by going to the cheaper station and the other brands would soon notice a reduction in customers, leaving them no choice but to match the lower price – competition at work,” he said. “In a small town like Ashburton it would be very

difficult for a business to survive by charging a higher price for the same identical product than other retailers in the town, hence for a product like fuel you end up with uniform pricing in the same location.

“The national price tends to be charged in main centres where the service stations are more likely to be owned by the national brands – unless there is competition from independently-owned retailers, hence New Zealand does have lots of price variation.”

BP 2go Ashburton owner operator Rasek Ganda confirmed the lower price at his station on West Street was due to competition in the town.

And, he said, not only were Ashburton motorists benefiting, but some motorists travelling State Highway 1 would hold out on getting fuel until they got to Ashburton, knowing the price

would be cheaper.

Z Energy external communications manager Sheena Thomas said local competition was one of the factors when reviewing the price daily at its individual sites, alongside international oil prices and the strength of the New Zealand dollar.

“We always have to strike a balance between maintaining volume and making a sustainable return on each litre of fuel,” Thomas said.

Ashburton still has a lot to live up to if it wants to beat some of the cheapest fuel locations in New Zealand, however.

Earlier this week the New Zealand Herald reported Z 91 was cheapest at Whakatane – 205.9.

The lowest priced 91 that Gull was offering was 197.7.

Some service stations were charging more than the national price, for example, Z Queenstown at 247.9.

From P1 Ashburton’s median rent for a three-bedroom house was currently $350 a week, with $300 for a two-bedroom home and $382 for a four-bedroom property.

The option of a one-bedroom rental in a person’s home was a new trend on Ashburton’s market, with Hurley having eight of these properties on his books. Six months ago there were none.

Median rent for one bedroom was $162.

Trade Me currently has 45 Ashburton properties on its rental books, but many of these are not available until next month.

The online rental agency is also showing median rentals across all category of properties as $337.50, up from $330 in August 2017 and down slightly from $340 in July this year Tenants in Ashburton are paying more than $100 less than the national median weekly rent of $480, according to Trade Me property figures.

Nationally Trade Me shows the national median as being up 6.7 per cent on last year at a record high of $480.

Trade Me’s head of rentals, Aaron Clancy, said the rental market was running hot during winter outside Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Ashburton has run counter to this trend.

“In August we typically see rents slow right down as we hit the seasonal winter slump, but this year the provincial rental market has bucked that trend, indicating that we’re headed for record rents this summer.”

He said a dip in the number of rental listings on Trade Me and tenants trying to get ahead of the summer rental rush were driving the increase.

Clancy said that in some parts of the country tenants were pouncing on rental properties quickly.

“One example is a property in Castor Bay, on Auckland’s North Shore, receiving a massive 93 email enquiries in its first two days onsite,” he said.

River area marred by illegal dumping

John Dedynski’s thrice-weekly dog walking route along the Ashburton River could be quite enjoyable – if it wasn’t for all the burnt tyres, household rubbish, mattresses and building materials illegally dumped there.

The Ashburton resident said he is now noticing several big rubbish dumps near the end of Milton Road every month – none of which is ever removed.

The issue has increased gradually throughout the past three years, he said, posing a major threat to the health of the river, as well as the enjoyment of residents.

“I’ve lived here for nine years, and it used to be more on and off – one or two times a month – but now it’s more like three or four every month,” he said.

“A lot of people enjoy the area for dog-walking, quad-biking and recreational activities.”

He said he had not seen Ashburton District Council taking any action to remove the rubbish.

But environmental monitoring manager Rick Catchpowle said when the council is made aware of an illegal dumping event, the site is visited and the materials are investigated.

Encore a labour of love, passion Settling in to watch the final dress rehearsal of Encore, I had hoped for one thing. To discover exactly what secret ingredients have kept the proverbial magical cauldron of the Methven Theatre Company bubbling away for 75 successful years.

I had my first answer pretty quickly, because it was etched firmly on the faces of every crew member and performer.

From the moment they shimmied on stage for a rousing delivery of Let Me Entertain You, to the drop of the curtain two hours later, I observed sheer passion.

For these folk, theatre can mean singing with a lampshade on your head, sitting high above the audience and twiddling with lighting equipment, carefully plucking chords on a guitar or lying dead still with two tampons stuffed up your nose … but it is always, very evidently, a labour of love.

Encore is crafted as a voyage down memory lane, dabbling in some of the most memorable moments of their 87 previous shows and paying tribute to hundreds of past and present members.

Surmising so much history in just two acts was surely not the easiest of tasks for director Marya Trengrove, musical director Kate Lambarth, choreographer Julia Bell and production manager Patrice Hammond, and I commend them for tackling it with a bit of imagination.

Most obviously, they had opted for an unusual set arrangement, with the orchestra plopped on an enormous lazy susan in the centre of the audience, right before the stage.

The effect was a flipped backstage-to-front of stage perspective for the audience, and an opportunity for the usually tucked away musicians to share a sliver of the spotlight. The downside was a bit of neck stretching to peer past the grand piano and see the singers at certain stages, but I was particularly excited when the double bass made its way around to face my seat in the second act (and I had to break the bad news to my friend that no, Alex, that is not a very large guitar).

The orchestra is just one of the many cogs which keep the company ticking, along with the equally vital backstage crew. Short video clips and acts gave winks of recognition to all the foreground and background players – and I decided that teamwork is definitely the second magic ingredient of the MTC. Plot-wise, the scenes in the show were organised with juke-box randomality, swinging from the hilarious, to the sentimental, to the solemn, to the spectacular. Comperes Alister Body and Matt Markham had the task of plucking each offering from the MTC’s giant metaphorical bookshelf and granting the audience a bit of context.

That mish-mash format meant less time on the edge of my seat, but more time soaking up some of the company’s versatility – another one of the many ingredients to success.

It also showcased the company’s slightly subtler strengths. I won’t give too much away but I will say that ample time was granted to the incredible vocal chords of Megan Hamilton and Chris Woods, along with the superb facial expressions of Gavin Templeton.

Other scenes oozed with humour and cheek, and I will struggle to cleanse my brain of the mental image of six tutu-clad men on the pursuit of ballerina suppleness.

I left Encore with lifted spirits and great respect for the theatrical skills hiding within little ol’ Methven.

There’s three more shows to go and I would certainly encourage all locals to secure their seats – but with just one warning.

After seeing just how much fun these guys have, you might find you just want to join Methven Theatre Company yourself.

In brief Closed for Christmas If you’re planning on doing business with the Ashburton District Council in December, you’ll need to have that business done by 1pm on December 24. The council’s administration building will be closed between Christmas and New Year, reopening on January 3. The museum and the library will be closed on the four Christmas to New Year statutory days only while the EA Networks Centre will be closed only on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. The Tinwald Pool will close for only one day over that period, Christmas Day.

Control tower recreated

A two-year project to recreate the original control tower at the Ashburton Airport will come to a celebratory end on Sunday.

Members of the Ashburton Aviation Museum have been helping build a new 9-metre tower based on old photographs of the control tower used in the 1940s.

Pre-World War Two and for a decade after, the airport was used as a training base for military airforce and territorials but the wooden tower was demolished in the early 1960s.

Brian Mitchell has co-ordinated the project to recreate the tower, which will be officially opened on Sunday.

The $125,000 job had been enabled by donations, including a sizeable one from the late Eric Drewitt, an aviation museum founding member.

Drewitt’s daughter Caroline and her children will be guests of honour at the opening.

Mitchell said museum members sourced old photographs and negatives of the tower and plans were drawn up by Kelvin Lysaght. The tower was built by Jim Reed Builders.

He said it was identical to the original tower except for the stairs, which were not as steep.

The building is about six metres long and four metres wide and the ground floor features a dedication to Drewitt, who also donated his collection of aviation books.

A television screen shows footage of the tower and airfield in action over the years.

The upper levels feature radio equipment of the past and a wind gauge, which measures wind direction and speed. The top deck gives nearly unobstructed views across the airfield and runways.

Mitchell said it was an achievement to finish the tower, and it would be a great exhibit for the aviation museum, which attracts visitors from all over the world.

Sunday’s opening will include displays of other aircraft, including the DC3 in front of the hangar, military vehicles and cars of the 1940s and 1950s.

Other invited guests include Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel and Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon.

Mitchell said members of the public were also most welcome to attend the tower opening, which was scheduled for 2pm.

The butchery is a regular in the annual challenge to find New Zealand’s best banger and over the years has had its fair share of success.

This year owner Mike Hansen has entered several varieties in the competition including beef, pork and smoked saveloys.

Judging in the event, that this year attracted 480 entries over 13 different categories, kicked off yesterday and will wrap up this afternoon.

Over the two days 33 judges will assess a total of 3750 individ-

ual sausages before whittling the entries down to medal winners in each category.

After the first round of judging this week, the 13 gold medal winners in each category will go forward to the Supreme Winner judging which will take place at Retail Meat New Zealand HQ at Smales Farm, Takapuna on October 11.

Alongside the Supreme Award will be the People’s Choice Award judging. The People’s Choice award sees the top six scoring sausages battle it out for the affection of the public.

The South Island will hold its first international mounted games competition next year. The Nations Team Championship will be hosted by the Canterbury Mounted Games Association, with the support of NZMGA, from October 6 to 12 in 2019. Teams from New Zealand, South Africa, Australia, Canada, USA and possibly Nigeria will battle it out in the fast-paced sport. Heats will be held at Trents Vineyard, Prebbleton, with the finals at Ellesmere A&P Show, Leeston. As a warm-up to next year’s show, mounted games riders will put on a demonstration at this year’s Ellesmere show on October 13.

Tahr cull petition A petition to halt the cull of tens of thousands of South Island tahr has attracted more than 20,000 signatures in just 15 hours. But Conservation Minister, and Green Party MP, Eugenie Sage has called the National Party-organised petition “absurd”. Last week, Sage instructed the Department of Conservation to cull 17,500 of the animals this weekend.

Charged over dog death The owner of a West Auckland doggy daycare is facing criminal charges over the death of a dog at her facility. But she denies accusations of ill treating the animal.

Wilson, a 17-month-old huntawaydoberman cross, was found dead and covered in bite wounds on May 9 last year. Daycare owner Trudi Jan Hewett was charged over Wilson’s death and appeared in the Waitakere District Court this morning. The 60-year-old pleaded not guilty.

Hewett is due to appear back in court later this year.

Teachers, principals reject latest offer Primary teachers and principals have rejected the Government’s latest offers of settlement, saying it does not address the teacher shortage that is at “crisis point”.

The secret online ballot for New Zealand Educational Institute Te Riu Roa members for a revised offer by the Ministry of Education closed on Tuesday night.

Teachers voted on the offer by an electronic ballot run by Elections NZ between September 18 and 25.

The offer for teachers included a three-year term from date of settlement, an increase in the base salary scale by 3 per sent each year for three years, no provisions for reducing workloads and class sizes and not committed funding for supporting children with additional learning needs.

NZEI members had sent a clear message that the offers did not address concerns about the growing teacher shortage, time to teach and support for children with additional learning needs, said NZEI Te Riu Roa President Lynda Stuart.

“The Government keeps saying we have to be patient, and they can’t fix everything at once, but

the teacher shortage is at crisis point. “If you think it’s expensive trying to fix a crisis, just wait to see how hard it is to turn around a disaster.”

In the meantime, students’ learning suffered when teachers couldn’t find relievers to cover for sick teachers, Stuart said.

“Now we have the ballot result, the next step is in members’

hands. They are discussing this online and in conversations in their workplaces.”

At the NZEI Te Riu Road annual conference in October representatives would consider feedback about potential collective action and would make a recommendation for plans for term 4.

The revised offer for principals included a three-year term date

of settlement, increase base salary scale by 3 per cent each year from date of settlement for principals with more than 100 students at their schools.

Also an increase base salary scale by 4.5 per cent, plus 4.5 per cent plus 4.4 per cent a year from the date of settlement for principals of schools with fewer than 100 students as well as no provisions to address workload.

Ministry of Education head Iona Holsted said earlier this month the new offer “responds to the union’s concerns the first offer was too heavily weighted towards new teachers, and increases the quantum”.

“It provides a cumulative increase of 9.3 per cent over three years; to teachers a 3 per cent increase for all teachers each year, over the next three years,” she said.

“The first increase will take effect when the collective agreement is settled, the second increase 12 months later and the third 24 months later.

“The cost of the ministry’s offer for teachers and principals is $569 million over four years.”

A survey by the NZEI has found that 30 per cent of primary school

principals said were no suitable applicants for the jobs they need to fill.

More than half, 52 per cent, said they did not have all the teachers they need this term, and 28 per cent have had to increase class sizes this term because they can’t find enough teachers.

Ninety per cent of principals said they struggled to find relievers when teachers were sick.

National education spokeswoman Nikki Kaye said Education Minister Chris Hipkins should ensure that the Ministry of Education “gets back to the table to try and resolve these issues”.

“The Government needs to step up and prioritise education funding,” she said.

“There have been issues around not putting on the table reducing class sizes, not getting commitments around special needs coordinators, and on the maternity grant issue the Government has been unduly harsh on what it has put on the table.

“It’s for ministers to ensure that the ministry gets back to the table to try and resolve these issues so we don’t have multiple strikes in the offing.”

Bill Cosby behind bars At an age when other Hollywood stars are settling into retirement and collecting lifetime-achievement awards, an 81-year-old Bill Cosby was led away to prison in handcuffs yesterday, sentenced to three to 10 years behind bars in what was seen by many of his accusers as a reckoning richly deserved and long overdue.

The comedian, TV star and breaker of racial barriers became the first celebrity of the #MeToo era to be sent to prison.

He was found guilty in April of drugging and sexually assaulting a woman at his gated estate in 2004 after being barraged with similar accusations from more than 60 women over the past five decades.

“It is time for justice. Mr. Cosby, this has all circled back to you. The time has come,” Montgomery County Judge Steven O’Neill said. He quoted from victim Andrea Constand’s statement to the court, in which she said Cosby took her “beautiful, young spirit and crushed it”.

Cosby declined the opportunity to speak before the sentence came down, and afterward sat laughing and chatting with his defence team.

His wife of 54 years, Camille, was not in court. Constand smiled broadly on hearing the punishment and was hugged by others in the courtroom.

In a blistering statement, Cosby spokesman Andrew Wyatt said the comic was subjected to the “most racist and sexist trial in the history of the United States”. Wyatt said all three of the psychologists who testified against Cosby were “white women who make

“For decades, the defendant has been able to hide his true self and hide his crimes using his fame and fortune. He’s hidden behind a character he created, Dr. Cliff Huxtable,” Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele said at a news conference, referring to Cosby’s best-known role.

But “now, finally, Bill Cosby has been unmasked, and we have seen the real man as he is headed off to prison”.

Constand stood at Steele’s side but shook her head to say she had no comment.

Former model Janice Dickinson, who accused Cosby of violating her, looked at him in the courtroom and said: “Who gets the last laugh, pal?”

Another accuser in the courtroom, Lili Bernard, said:

“There is solace, absolutely. It is his fame and his fortune and his phony philanthropy that has allowed him to get away with impunity. Maybe this will send a message to other powerful perpetrators that they will be caught and punished.”

Cosby’s punishment, which also included a $25,000 fine, came at the end of a two-day hearing at which the judge declared him a “sexually violent predator” – a modern-day scarlet letter that subjects him to monthly counselling for the rest of his life and requires that neighbours and schools be notified of his whereabouts. A psychologist for the state testified that Cosby appears to have a mental disorder characterised by an uncontrollable urge to have sex with women without their consent.

Trump’s speech met with mocking laughter President Donald Trump poured scorn on the “ideology of globalism” and heaped praise on his own administration’s achievements in a speech to the UN General Assembly that drew headshakes and even mocking laughter from his audience of fellow world leaders.

“The US will not tell you how to live and work or worship,” Trump said as he unapologetically promoted his America First agenda. “We only ask that you honour our sovereignty in return.”

Speaking in triumphal terms, Trump approached his address to the world body as something of an annual report to the world on his country’s progress since his inauguration.

He showcased strong economic numbers, declared that the US military is “more powerful than it has ever been be-

Just sentences into the president’s remarks, the audience began to chuckle and some leaders broke into outright laughter, suggesting the onetime reality television star’s

puffery is as familiar abroad as it is at home. Trump appeared briefly flustered, then smiled and said it was not the reaction he expected “but that’s all right”.

Later he brushed off the episode, telling reporters, “Oh it was great. Well, that was meant to get some laughter so it was great.”

The leaders’ spontaneous response to Trump’s address only reinforced the American president’s isolation among allies and foes alike, as his nationalistic policies have created rifts with erstwhile partners and cast doubt in some circles about the reliability of American commitments around the world.

In addition to his keynote speech, Trump is to chair a meeting of the UN Security Council about nuclear proliferation.

Like a scene out of a high-octane action movie that he would star in, Will Smith celebrated his 50th birthday Tuesday by successfully bungee jumping from a helicopter near the Grand Canyon.

Cameras, which captured the stunt for a livestream on YouTube , showed the actor hooked to a harness and bungee cords dangling over a gorge in northeastern Arizona. “This is some of the most beautiful stuff I’ve ever seen in my life,” Smith said while still swinging over the chasm. He described the experience as going “from pure terror to absolute bliss.”

Pink portraits raise $7000 Two large glitter paintings of singer Pink created by Whangarei artist Jessie Rose Foote have raised $7000 for KidsCan NZ. The popular singer who toured New Zealand this month signed both paintings after Foote appealed to Pink through social media to autograph the works. Pink obliged and both were signed by Pink backstage at Spark Arena on her 39th birthday at her Auckland concert. The works were on Trade Me and once it was official Pink had signed them the bidding increased with fans keen to get their hands on the paintings. The new owners will also get a framed letter of authenticity from Pink’s management team.

Sons of Anarchy actor dies Paul John Vasquez has died of an apparent heart attack at 48, it has been reported. The actor’s body was reportedly discovered at his father’s home in San Jose, California, on Monday night, according to TMZ. Vazquez, mostly known for his starring role on Sons of Anarchy, was found unconscious, the publication reports, adding that when paramedics arrived to the scene, the 48-year-old could not be revived. A cause of death has yet to be determined.

Paul is the second actor from the show to have passed away. His former co-star Alan O’Neill died in July, having suffered from heart problems over the years.

A big birthday thank you to you I

f you’re anything like me, the prospect of yet another birthday will leave you feeling a little ho-hum.

As you get older, they tend to morph into one another and all of sudden it’s only really worth celebrating the milestones.

Today is the Guardian’s birthday. It’s not a milestone achievement, but it is a significant one all the same, our 139th in fact.

For a little old independent newspaper, we think that’s quite an effort to have been able to sustain ourselves for that long and are also working as hard as we possibly can to ensure it doesn’t end anytime soon.

The world of printed news is changing. Newspapers are supposed to be on the decline

with falling subscriptions as the printed news fails to keep up with the demands of people wanting their news and information now.

That’s our biggest challenge as we enter into our 140th year of existence – to keep our newspaper current and as full of the much-needed information that you, our readers, need in your daily news.

As we’ve written before, while the rest of the country seems to

be struggling when it comes to readership levels, we are able to boast that for almost the entire last year we have been the only paper in New Zealand to have shown a growth in readership.

That’s a significant achievement for us and one we will continue to sing from the rooftops about.

Birthdays are about celebrating after all.

So much of what we do hinges on the printed version of the paper, but the Guardian isn’t just about those who produce the news.

There’s an incredible team sitting in this building every day trying their best for this community.

From the reporters, to the hardworking production team and

right through to our advertising representatives, everyone plays their bit ensuring the longevity of one of Ashburton’s eldest, stillrunning, businesses.

Some have been here for quite some time too and the wealth of experience we have sitting in the room is quite incredible.

But the people who need to be thanked on our birthday most of all is you, our loyal readers.

Without your loyalty and support we could not have achieved over the past 12 months, what we have.

Seeing our readership remaining strong while others are shrinking shows that we’re doing something right.

We’ll never be able to be all things to all people, but we try

every day to be most things to most people, to provide our readers with the stories that will strike a chord, with news items that will inform and engage.

Without your help we couldn’t do this. Our readers, our community, the people who call this place home are the people who make the news.

They’re the faces behind the stories and it is your willingness to share your stories with us that makes a newspaper strong, that helps it survive in a world where print and paper are rapidly giving way to electronic media.

nce upon a time, New Zealand’s heartland landscape was laced with branch railway lines linking small rural towns and settlements with the nation’s main trunk railway line.

They carried passengers and freight, connected producers with markets and often presented formidable obstacles to those tasked with their construction utilising the limited technologies and earthmoving practices of the day. Often, that was horse, cart, pick and shovel!

It was after all, the 1800s.

By the 1950s and ’60s their days were numbered. Many had already withered and closed, others hung on with limited freight-only services until they too succumbed.

None of them, it could be argued, made any money. Trucks were to the fore and the future for the branch line was bleak.

Here in Mid Canterbury, the Mt Somers Branch Line began construction in stages back in 1878, closing for good in 1968. A small section remains in service today as the Plains Vintage Railway.

Down with our close neighbours in South Canterbury, the old Fairlie Branch Railway closed in March the same year, in a highly emotive farewell.

But back then, a young guy with a ton of talent for turning his hand to restoring items of technological and social history, rounded up some like-minded people and hatched a plan to purchase the old Pleasant Point Railway Station and negotiated with New Zealand Railways to buy one of the veteran Ab class locomotives to display on a bit

And create a museum.

Railways top brass agreed, but no doubt nervous about the potential harm a bunch of novices could come to trying to bring the steam monster back to life, wanted to ensure that couldn’t happen by insisting the boiler be filled with concrete.

Luckily that didn’t eventuate.

Over the years, an industrious and committed team joined long-standing society president Russell Paul to not only bring the initial concept to life, but to exponentially improve and expand the operation to a world-class standard.

Paul was also a meticulous restorer of vintage cars and turned his hand along the way to recreating a little-known gem from our nation’s rail heritage, a Model T railcar!

Sadly, a few years back, in one of life’s cruel blows, this man who had nurtured the Pleasant Point dream from its beginnings, was taken too soon. His many friends, family and colleagues took him on his final railway

journey on the railway he had invested so much of himself in.

So tough to accept all his energy, ideas and doggedness had been snatched away.

Last Sunday at Pleasant Point, I thought about Russell Paul a lot.

How proud he would have been that others had stepped up and kept his vision alive and thriving.

March this year would have been the 50th anniversary of the closure of the line. As soon as the railways had delivered the old Ab steam locomotive to the new group of enthusiasts back in 1968, they began to tear up the track behind it. They certainly didn’t muck around.

Over the years, a section of the track was re-laid by the group along part of the original formation, and the pride of the Point was restored to haul some exquisitely rebuilt old rolling stock.

Everything, every step of the way has been done to such a high standard. All by volunteers.

Five years ago the venerable Ab 699 locomotive was withdrawn from service to undergo required

deep maintenance.

The work was a massive undertaking but with progress made, the decision was taken to slightly delay the commemoration ceremony of 50 years since the Fairlie branch closure, until the locomotive was ready.

It all came together last Sunday on a beautiful sunny Pleasant Point afternoon. The Mackenzie Pipe Band struck up as the loco gently pulled away from the station bedecked with flags and a header board and masquerading as Ab 718 which closed the line for NZR half a century ago.

Then an hour later with a changed identity, Ab 699 – the real deal – returned to service to provide a real-time journey into our almost forgotten past, as she has done now for nearly half a century.

Everything was perfect, just how Russell Paul would have wanted it. He may be gone, but his spirit, his legacy lives on.

Disappointed to read Tuesday’s Guardian to see front page headlines highlighting the death of a woman who no doubt was a mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

For a family who have just lost a treasured member – hurtful reporting to make a front-page story on an untimely death.

Enough is enough, why does the Guardian continue to sensationalise other people’s grief.

As the editor were you really saying that this family’s loss was

the most important event that happened within Mid Canterbury for Tuesday’s front page?

The owner and editor should issue an apology to this family.

Surely your reporters can look for better newsworthy front page stories than trading on people’s grief and tragedy.

Pasture pests cost economy billions

Pasture pests are removing up to $2.3 billion a year from the economy.

An AgResearch study has estimated for the first time the financial impact of pests such as grass grubs, black beetles, nematodes and weevils for lost productivity in pastoral farming.

Yearly losses were calculated on average at $1.7b and $2.3b. Losses of up to $1.4b were found on dairy farms and up to $900 million on sheep and beef farms.

“Our research shows that the impact of the grass grub alone costs dairy farms up to $380m and sheep and beef farms up to $205m, each year,” AgResearch scientist Colin Ferguson said.

Losses from pasture pests are usually determined either by the amount of foliage they consume, or reductions in pasture production.

However, AgResearch’s study has used the reduction in pasture production to estimate the impact on milk production revenue for dairy farms, and on meat production revenue for sheep and beef farms.

Ferguson said the study provided a good picture of the challenge scientists and farmers faced with pasture pests and reinforced the need to invest in new and costeffective ways to better control them.

“AgResearch is looking at pest control on a number of fronts, in-

cluding the development of new biopesticides – naturally occurring organisms that can be used to target specific pest species, instead of chemical treatments that can be expensive and have

The study was part of a project funded by DairyNZ, Fonterra, Dairy Companies Association of New Zealand, Beef + Lamb New

Zealand, the government and AgResearch.

The full science paper was published this week in the New Zealand Journal of Agricultural Research.

Why McDonald’s is a little Kiwi around the world One tenth of New Zealand’s beef exports went to McDonald’s restaurants globally in 2017, Beef and Lamb NZ said.

That year, the company bought 5.5 million kg for the local market and exported 33 million kg to McDonald’s restaurants globally, representing 10 per cent of New Zealand’s total beef exports, the farmerfunded organisation said.

McDonalds said that since their launch in 2009, Kiwis had chowed down on 5.5 million kg of its locally-sourced angus beef patties – the same weight as nine Airbus A380s aircraft.

“The burgers on offer have changed with customer tastes over the years, but Angus beef has proved consistently popular, with orders of the beef rising by nearly 24 per cent in one year (2016 to 2017) and over

700,000kg of New Zealand angus beef used in 2017 alone,” McDonald’s said in a statement.

Dave Howse, McDonald’s New Zealand managing director, said the company had played a pivotal role in making angus beef accessible to Kiwis.

“Prior to that, angus beef wasn’t that well known with Kiwis and we also provided a new, consistent market for farmers in New Zealand,” he said.

The beef industry is not the only one to benefit from McDonald’s enormous demand for fresh produce.

New Zealand also exported 8.69 million kg of cheese, 30,000kg of potatoes, 93,000kg of chicken products and 1.17 million kg of fish products to McDonald’s restaurants around the world.

Water tax ‘unworkable’ Irrigators frosty about the idea of a nationwide water plan favour further investment in modern irrigation systems to bring about more efficient water use.

IrrigationNZ chief executive Andrew Curtis said a water tax was unworkable.

“A water tax has been considered in other countries internationally but in every case it has been abandoned. Other countries have found it too complex and expensive to design a fair water tax.’’

Curtis said the interim report by the Government’s Tax Work-

ing Group touched on some of the complexities around a water tax, such as the need to address Maori rights and interests.

The report recognised that many groups used water and taxation would affect them as well as irrigators, he said.

In Canterbury 55 per cent of water is consented for hydro-generation, 29 per cent for irrigation and 16 per cent for other uses.

The Tax Working Group sees a water tax as a way to increase water use efficiency. The group, led by former Finance Minister Sir Mi-

chael Cullen, was formed to provide recommendations for the tax system over the next 10 years and will finalise its proposals in February.

However, irrigators argue that regulations and limits on water availability are already driving the adoption of more efficient irrigation systems. NZ Agricultural Production Survey statistics show a big drop in the use of flood irrigation systems which now only account for 5 per cent of irrigated land.

Curtis said modern irrigation systems had less water and nutri-

ent run-off which was good for the environment.

“But they are expensive – for example, in Canterbury some irrigators will need to spend a total of $80 million replacing their irrigation systems to meet new council rules.

“The Government and the primary sector agreed this year that audited Farm Environment Plans should be introduced nationwide to improve farm practices, including irrigation efficiency. Irrigators have already invested significant time and resources to meet Farm

Environment Plan requirements.”

Curtis said introducing a blanket national water tax would make it more difficult for farmers and growers to install more efficient irrigation systems.

A tax would reduce the amount of money available to change farm systems by adding a new cost for irrigators, he said.

The group has also considered a water pollution tax with leached nitrates alone potentially raising $270 million, but noted that tax instruments and tools to measure pollution needed development.

Mainzeal directors ‘ignored risk’ Significant governance risks existed at failed construction company Mainzeal almost a decade before the company collapsed, according to evidence from veteran company director Sandy Maier.

But directors, including former Prime Minister Jenny Shipley, didn’t act.

Mainzeal Property and Construction, one of New Zealand’s largest building companies at the time, went into liquidation in February 2013 owing creditors, including numerous sub-contractors, more than $115 million.

In his statement of evidence prepared for the high-profile case brought by Mainzeal liquidators BDO against the former directors, Maier argued there were warning signs as early as 2004, when Shipley became an independent director on the Mainzeal board.

These included the fact that independent directors had virtually no control over multi-million dollar related-party loans, and relied solely on assurances – which turned out to be wrong – that the money would be repaid.

Maier first came to New Zealand from the US in 1986 as chief executive of Citibank and has

Baskets missing after bag phase-out Shopping baskets at one Auckland Countdown store are dropping by the day.

Countdown Orewa has reportedly been left with just 10 shopping baskets, down from 200, after the store stopped providing single-use plastic bags last month.

Countdown Dunedin is also have “teething issues with baskets”.

About 87 Countdown stores have discontinued the use of plastic bags.

“Orewa and Dunedin seem to have had a few teething issues with baskets but we’d expect that to settle down once customers get into the habit of remembering their bags,” a Countdown spokeswoman said in a statement. “[It] is of course disappointing, but we also understand that sometimes change can be tough.”

Countdown said reusable bags were now on sale from 15c.

“On the whole we’ve found

customers are really supportive of the change away from plastic bags and the majority of customers are already remembering to bring their own bags when they shop with us.”

A spokeswoman for rival supermarket chain Foodstuffs said the issue had not extended to any of its network stores.

“It’s not a widespread issue at Foodstuffs stores which have

currently gone plastic bag free,” the spokeswoman said.

“We think this is down to the fact that we have communicated clearly with our customers about the switch to reusable bags and that we’ve given away millions of bags to help them adjust to the change.”

Foodstuffs operates Pak’nSave, New World, Four Square and Fresh Collective.

“Despite MLG’s clear inability to repay that debt, the MLG loans were not impaired in MPC’s statements,” Maier said.

He said it was irrelevant that auditors signed off the company’s annual accounts and didn’t signal any problems until 2010.

“The role of a director is not simply to rely on the auditors’ figures without questions or separate assessment. A director is required to look beyond the numbers to consider their reliability and test the risks that may affect the company’s position.

“I would have expected to see the collectability of the MLG loans identified as a key risk ... In fact, I would have expected to see concerted efforts to secure repayment.”

He said the way the company was structured gave its ultimate parent company Richina Pacific too much power, and the board too little.

Air NZ to revamp its staff uniforms Air New Zealand will start work on a new uniform this year and plans to introduce it in its next generation of long-range planes.

Chief executive Christopher Luxon said the current uniform had been the most popular in the airline’s 78-year history.

The hot pink, lime green and aqua blue outfits were designed

by Trelise Cooper.

He told shareholders at the company’s annual meeting yes-

terday that they had been loved by staff but it was time for a refresh.

The latest uniform was introduced in 2010 and didn’t meet universal approval with critics saying they make the cabin crew look like drag queens and appear to have been inspired by Barbie’s flock wallpaper.

Luxon said it took about two years to develop a uniform and the airline was looking to start re-

placing its eight Boeing 777-200s in 2022.

Previous uniforms had been Christian Dior, Nina Ricci, Thornton Hall, Barbara Lee and Zambesi-designed.

Secret development work was under way on a new premium cabin for the new long-range jets, and cabin products and uniforms would be part of the new look.

Lamb 500g Quality Mark lamb mince 1 large onion, finely chopped 1/2 t cinnamon 1/4 t allspice 1/4 t cloves 1/4 t dried chilli flakes (optional) 400g can chopped tomatoes in juice 2T tomato paste 1/4 C finely chopped fresh parsley leaves 1/4 C pine nuts, toasted 1T lemon juice Pizza dough 1/2 t sugar 1 1/2 t instant dry yeast (or 7g packet) 3C flour 1t salt 2T oil 25g butter, melted To serve Natural unsweetened yoghurt Handful parsley leaves, torn ■ Pizza dough: Place sugar and

dry yeast in a small bowl and pour over 1/4 C warm water.

Leave until the mixture is frothy, about 5 minutes. (Have your water on the hotter side of warm to activate the yeast as quickly as possible, but not so hot that it destroys the yeast). Sift the flour and salt on to a clean, warm bench top and make a well in the centre. Pour in the oil and butter and 3/4 C warm water. Add the frothy yeast mixture and mix well. Knead dough until smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes.

Place dough in a lightly oiled warm bowl, turn dough over to coat top with oil, cover with plastic wrap and a tea towel. Leave in a warm spot until the dough doubles in volume, about an hour.

■ Lamb: Preheat the oven to 220°C. Heat oil in a large frying pan and add the chopped onion.

Cook over a low heat until the onion is soft and then turn up the heat and add the lamb mince.

Cook until browned.

■ Add the cinnamon, allspice, cloves and dried chilli flakes and cook for about 1 minute. Add the tomatoes, tomato paste, parsley and pine nuts. Season and cook over a moderate heat for 8-10 minutes until most of the moisture has evaporated but the lamb mince is not dry. Add the lemon juice and mix well. Lightly oil a large flat baking tray. Divide the pizza dough into 2 pieces and flatten until very thin. Place on the baking tray. Divide lamb mince between the 2 pieces of dough and brush the pizza edges with a little oil. Cover loosely with plastic wrap and leave for 10 minutes to rest and rise a little. Remove plastic wrap and place in the oven (lower down in the oven so the base of the pizzas cook well), and bake for 1520 minutes.

■ To serve: Serve the pizzas drizzled with yoghurt and parsley.

Allenton Croquet Club Our monthly meeting was attended by 14 members and were welcomed by President Ann Sunbeam.

Allenton Sports Club opening on Saturday September 15 was enjoyed by many of our members with the day being just like a summer’s day. Once the season was declared open we played croquet then shared afternoon tea with the Sports Club and Bowlers.

Our official opening to be held on Monday September 17 had to be cancelled due to bad weather. Members attended Waireka and Methven open days, both having more luck than us with the weather. The working bee in our gardens have done a great job and all is looking nice and tidy.

Due to the resignation of our Patroness, Mrs Jean Cobout was approached to fill the position and she gracefully accepted.

Many members helped deliver “Meals on Wheels” during the first week of September and were thanked by President Ann. A new trophy being donated be Georgina Black is to be played for by Golf Croquet and all wins on Club days, Wednesday and Saturdays will be recorded and totalled. This started this week.

Next meeting to be held on October 17 at 3.15pm

Ashburton Bowling Club Opening Day was a success. President Jo Ryk welcomed all returning members along with new members to the start of the new season, President Jo asked all present to stand for a moment’s refection for members who had passed away over the last year.

Our mayor Donna Favel then opened our season, along with Patron Colleen Van Leeuwarden raising the flag, and Life Member Janet Moore putting up the first Jack followed by Donna rolling the first bowl up. Also, in attendance from the Council was Thelma Bell. Donna and Thelma then joined in for a couple of hours of bowling on our great greens which had been well prepared by life members Roger and Diane along with their helpers.

Could the members please get their names and teams up for the season’s Championship games as they are closing soon. At the Friday Triples held at the MSA, Min Hill along with Brian Williams received first prize with a Rush, well done.

The Inhouse Ingold Tray is to be played a little earlier this year on Saturday September 29, 12:30 start, wear whites and bring a plate (no entry fee) names on the board please.Tuesdays and Thursdays there are roll ups at 1:15pm, mufti dress code, new members welcome, we can find some bowls for you wear flat soled shoes.Social hour has started at the club, Friday evening’s 5pm all members welcome.

Following the dinner, Lion Les Briggs introduced guest speakers Sergeant Phil Newton and ex Constable Tara Newton. Both spoke of their experiences in the Police Force including the aftermath of the Christchurch earthquake and other incidents that occur in the day to day routine of Police work. Both made special reference to the contribution that women now make to the Police Force with females now numbering 37 per cent.

Our Guest Speaker was Robyn Kilworth who spoke of Trotts Charitable Trust, the history of the Gardens, how they evolved to the amazing landscaped

property as it is now. It began on 3.4 hectares in 1978, and was developed and sculpted with so much attention to detail, it is a must see Garden to view. With the formation of the Trust in 2017, it has a number of volunteers, who go along each week to tend to the gardens and lawns. It is also used for Weddings using the Church of Christ which has been an addition to the venue, including a Marquee Pavilion to cater for celebrations and Events. Robyn was thanked for giving such an informative and lively presentation.

The meeting closed followed by afternoon tea. October 18 is the date we are tripping to Windwhistle followed by a visit to Terrace Station, at Hororata. Historically known as the home of Sir John Hall, Premier of NZ, who introduced the Suffrage Bill to Parliament in 1893,

when women were first introduced in 1937 and then only uniformed many years later, but now rising to senior ranks. Tara gave an update report on the Maia Foundation and its endeavour to finance the new helicopter pad on the roof of the Christchurch Hospital and the upgrade of the Children’s Ward.

The Foundation is nearing their target of $5.2 Million and are grateful for the generous support from Mid Canterbury, especially from the Lions Clubs. Phil and Tara were thanked by President Ron and presented with a Certificate of Appreciation.

At the end of play on Sunday all our kings and queens of the course will be crowned, and some cracking games are set to be played. In Junior B, Wilson Hii will tackle retired teacher Peter Bain who will try to blind the young pup with science.

In Bronze II, Leigh Wackrow and Heather Robertson will duke it out in a slug fest, Junior A Dave Hewitt and Matt Tait will be another case of master and apprentice.

Bronze I, Jenny Stoddart and Liz Cabout should have a ding dong battle. Tim Newton will set up the course just how he likes it for his Intermediate clash with Chris Lovelock. In the ladies Silver, great friends Pauline Bell and Sharon Bradford, who know each other’s game inside out, will again have a great tussle.

Then in the men’s Senior, after one of the best fields assembled for many a year in the seniors champs, with 8 different players being tipped from the start.

It has ended up being “same again please”. The cream will always rise and Jordan Green will again lock horns with Robbie Bell. Good luck to all finalists. Have fun, give it your all and may the golfing gods be on your side.

Slater defends charge The NRL has been accused of using its “third-string” legal counsel against Billy Slater’s expertly-prepared and high-powered defence of a shoulder charge. The Melbourne champion will play in Sunday’s NRL grand final after successfully defending his shoulder charge citing in a near-three hour judiciary hearing. Slater was given an inside line to slip out of the charges against him, according to Fox League’s NRL 360 host Paul Kent.

The veteran rugby league commentator tore strips off the NRL administration after it was revealed on Monday the game’s foremost legal counsel was unavailable to represent the NRL Match Review Committee at Tuesday night’s hearing.

Tokyo search begins Tokyo Olympic organisers have begun their search for 80,000 unpaid volunteers to staff many of the venues when the Olympics and Paralympics open in just under two years.

The closing date for applications will be in December, though Tokyo 2020 organisers say they have not set a specific day. Olympics volunteers are unpaid and must provide their own lodging. They are given uniforms and free meals on the days they work. The Tokyo metropolitan government is also running a separate volunteer program to help steer tourists during the Olympics. It is reported to be seeking about 30,000 volunteers.

Wednesday evening walkers had an impressive turn out with seven members starting at 5.30pm and another four at the 6pm meet.

The weather played its part with those in attendance feeling the spring in their step. Welcome to one new walker this week. Members are using the mid-week walk to put some pace on in readiness for the Greymouth Relays in three weeks’ time. This is an annual event with 13 signed up so far from the club to compete.

Saturday morning early birds had five walkers and five runners meet at Frontrunner and head off down the south river track for a solid hour on their feet. Four members in training for Kepler chose the tracks at Peel Forest for their training

this week. Plenty of variety on offer to satisfy everyone.

The warm weather continued through to the afternoon meet which this week was hosted from Morris Road.

Nine walkers (above) enjoyed being in the country, taking in Company Road, the new industrial park, returning via Taits Road. With such a calm day we enjoyed seeing the sky divers grace the skies, however everyone was unanimous they were happy to have their feet firmly on the ground and would stick to walking! Afternoon tea and socialising was enjoyed on their return.

Robyn’s an ace!

Harvey Elliott has become the youngestever player to feature for Fulham at 15 years and 174 days. The striker made his debut for the Premier League club after coming on in the 81st minute of a 3-1 victory over Millwall in the third round of the League Cup on Tuesday. Luca de la Torre, a 20-year-old American midfielder, scored his first goal for Fulham. Joe Bryan and Cyrus Christie also opened their accounts for the west London club.

Jones holds Rio hopes Luuka Jones is hoping to continue her Rio de Janeiro love affair when she competes at the Canoe Slalom World Championships this week. The Kiwi paddler, who begins her campaign overnight, recorded a career best result in the city at the 2016 Rio Olympics, winning a silver medal in the K1 discipline.

Jones has been in Rio for the past few weeks, with the world championships being held at the same venue where she claimed her famous piece of silverware. The 29-year-old will compete in the K1, C1 and extreme K1 at the world championships, and says she definitely has a soft spot for Rio. “I was quite stoked to come back here and had a few days off to go and check out the city before I started training. I love the course.”

Methven Golf Club ladies’ member Robyn Maw has scored her first hole-inone. She achieved the feat on September 10 while playing in the final of the Lowe Cup competition, making it impossible for her opponents to win that hole. The ace, on the 136-metre par three fourth hole, helped Maw and her partner Roz Grant to win the Lowe Cup. Maw, who plays off a 24 handicap, has been playing for 20 years and in her first year of retirement had decided to spend more time on the golf course ... it paid off.

Allenton launches touch sevens The social summer touch sevens season is just around the corner and the Allenton Rugby Club is on the lookout for more teams for a new competition it is launching.

Allenton is a club in the middle of a resurgence. It had been a number of years since it had fielded a senior side but it was still a strong rugby club with an aim of one day again fielding teams

across all rugby age groups, club JAB captain Rob Glennie said.

It is hoped the new summer sevens competition will become a big part of the club and an annual fixture on the calendar.

While it was big for the club, it was just as much about offering the community another healthy exercise option, Glennie said.

It was a competition that offered something for everyone

with a mixed adults only grade for men, women and teenagers, as well as a grade where parents/ caregivers could play alongside their children, Glennie said.

There is no charge to submit a team and it is open to everyone, including non-club members.

The competition will run on Friday evenings at the Allenton Rugby Club, starting on November 2.

Play will get under way each week at 5pm and the competition will run for seven weeks.

It was preferred if teams were entered with seven players, but if anyone didn’t have a full team the club could help people find full teams.

Entry forms can be found on the Allenton Rugby Club’s website and teams must be submitted to the club by Friday.

Maguire eyes Manu for Kiwis test jersey New Zealand coach Michael Maguire admits Joseph Manu will be front and centre when he assesses up to eight test candidates on show in the NRL grand final.

On the back of some compelling form in the finals, Roosters centre Manu has surged into contention for a maiden test jersey when the Kiwis face Australia next month.

The 22-year-old is one of potentially eight Kiwis hopefuls who Maguire will assess when the Roosters face Melbourne on Sunday.

Tokoroa-raised Manu has been the in-form New Zealander in the finals, having started all but one game this season – the one-point loss to the Storm in June.

The right-sided centre has been a defensive force, underlined by his 19 tackles and strong showing in shutting down South Sydney star Greg Inglis in the preliminary final.

Manu scored a fine try a week earlier against Cronulla, giving him five in his past nine games as his attacking talents have also begun to blossom.

It hasn’t gone unnoticed by Maguire.

“Him being able to step up on the big stage is something I’ve seen in these last couple of weeks,” Maguire told Newshub.

“Obviously, when you play in finals the intensity comes and the various pressures are different. I’d like to see it again in the grand final.”

The Ashburton Car Club is running a grass autocross this Sunday near Mt Somers and as long as your car is up to warrant of fitness standard, you can give it a go.

The autocross will be held on a property near Staveley and entry will cost $40. Helmets, overalls and a warrantable standard vehicle are compulsory and rally tyres are permitted. The event will start at 10.30am, with documentation and scrutineering from 10am. It will be signposted from the corner of Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road and Springburn Bushside Road. Price received a shock late call-up to the Diamonds team yesterday after veteran Kim Ravaillion’s decision to step down from the Australian netball side for the upcoming Constellation Cup with New Zealand. Is 400 NRL games the new norm?

It remains to be seen whether Cameron Smith plays 400 NRL games but Immortal Mal Meninga believes the magical milestone will soon become the norm.

Ex-test skipper Smith is on track to become the first player to shatter the 400-game barrier after agreeing to play on next year, but has left the retirement door ajar if Melbourne win Sunday night’s NRL grand final.

The 42-year-old Warriors assistant coach will help the national side prepare for the October 13 clash against the Kangaroos at Mt Smart Stadium as they continue to rebuild following the retirement and unavailability of several experienced players. Fellow Kiwis assistant Nathan Cayless will also be on hand for the Auckland test but won’t travel to England, with discussions continuing for him to join Jones as an assistant to Warriors head coach Stephen Kearney next year. World rugby becomes circus

By GreGor Paul It’s ironic that a few weeks ahead of two of the most anticipated November tests in decades, rugby bosses are in Sydney contemplating plans to introduce a radical new format for the international game.

The charge is being led by World Rugby deputy chairman Gus Pichot who has suggested insolvency is on the cards for a handful of major unions unless international rugby is revamped both in when it is played and how it is structured.

Pichot has floated the idea of amalgamating the June and November test windows to create an elongated space for some kind of inter-hemisphere tournament, run in cross-Equator pools with knock-out rounds.

It is a concept not without appeal but the viability of the proposal diminishes the more the detail is examined and while Pichot has been refreshingly dynamic and invigorating since he took the role, this particular idea of his is one that needs to meet quite stiff resistance. If there is one thing rugby executives

around the world should have learned by now, it is that less is more.

The two biggest ticket items in the game are the World Cup and British & Irish Lions – both of which only come around every four years.

And if there is further proof that four years is the magic time to wait, then surely it comes in the fact that the All Blacks haven’t played England since 2014 and tickets for their November clash at Twickenham have been sold for record prices and the stadium could have been filled five times over.

Pichot is right that things have to change, but perhaps not as radically and as decisively as he has proposed. Does the game really need what will effectively become a mini-World Cup three years out of four?

The danger with that is not only will it diminish the value of the actual World Cup, but it is conditioning the market to believe that all test football needs to be framed in some wider competitive format. There are also questions about how the lowerranked Tier Two nations will ever

Gus Pichot become a part of this concept and presumably some radical thinking needs to happen on how the revenue will be equally shared.

It’s a headline grabber but nothing else and while it’s good, healthy even, to explore new concepts, hopefully all those with decision-maker power in Sydney will realise that the cur-

rent set-up can’t be all bad when 82,000 people have paid top dollar to cram into Twickenham to watch a test match that will have nothing more than pride on the line.

This desire to inflict radical change is frustrating, too, because earlier this year global agreement was reached to shift the June test window to July from 2020 and with that the Southern Hemisphere had about the perfect season set up.

It may have felt like the season structure was broken and hopeless south of the Equator and in need of a dramatic overhaul, but really, that one decision to jump the June tests to July pretty much fixes everything.

That one change means Super Rugby can start in mid-February as it always does and be played in one uninterrupted bloc. That’s one huge problem eradicated right there.

As much as there is a problem with the format of Super Rugby, it’s made worse by the fact that the competition has to be put on hold – just as it is typically becoming interesting – while international rugby is played. - NZME

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has come under fire from a South African equal rights rugby group for statements made in a recently released book.

The SARU SACOS Legends group penned an open letter to Hansen regarding comments in Peter Bills’ book The Jersey: The Secrets Behind the World’s Most Successful Team.

Hansen was quoted in the book saying “rugby wasn’t a black man’s sport” and South Africa was “the only team in sport that doesn’t pick its best team”.

The organisation, which was founded to support South African rugby players of colour and oppose the apartheid regime, strongly hit out against the statements, saying it “reeks of a complete ignorance” and that Hansen is ill-informed. It also incorrectly calls it Hansen’s book.

“We are obviously irritated and feel a sense of ire at those who make such simplistic pronouncements and construe these to be indicative of a hackneyed view which shows complete disdain for the hurt and pain experienced by those from the former nonracial SARU SACOS rugby stable,” the group wrote.

“While we do not wish to take anything away from your celebrated successes and greatly admired astuteness as a rugby coach, we do offer a word of caution … where rugby men start to venture on terrain such as pronouncing reasons for other countries’ poor performance on a sports field.”

As part of his research for the book Bills, a respected British journalist, had unprecedented access to the All Blacks during last year’s tour by the British and Irish Lions.

Hansen’s comments, which were part of a larger statement made of the Springboks, appeared to be a reference to the country’s controversial – and divisive – quota system.

By next year’s World Cup, 50 per cent of the South African team is required to be made up of players of colour. Many have suggested that despite the good intentions behind the system, it isn’t necessarily the best for the national team in terms of being able to compete at the highest level. “[Late former South African president] Nelson Mandela understood it better than anyone else,” Hansen is quoted as saying in the book.

“He knew that the Springboks was a team that could unite the nation. I still believe it is, if they got things right and allowed it to develop naturally, it would. And you would get the right people in the team. In the end it would be a multi-cultural team.

“Rugby wasn’t a black man’s sport, but it was the sport that would unify the country in a way no other sport or business could.”

Third time’s a charm for grey Matamata trainer Glenn Old will have solid chances at two separate venues on Saturday, but he will head to New Plymouth to watch Our King Sway in the battle of the Greys.

The Shinko King eight-yearold will line-up in the Powerworx Greys (1400m) and his trainer his hoping third time’s a charm after Our King Sway (right) finished fourth in 2016 and runner-up in last year’s contest.

The stakes-winner ran third fresh-up in the JRA Trophy (1400m) at Te Aroha earlier this month and his trainer believes the current Dead6 track conditions will be ideal for his runner come Saturday.

“It was a great run first-up, we’re really happy with him,” Old said. “He’s 100 per cent ready for this week, so hopefully he is good enough to get up.

“In his first year (in the race) it was a mile on a heavy11 track and he ran on late and last year it was on a heavy10 and he got

beaten by a nose. But this year the track will really suit him.”

Old believes Our King Sway is a big chance in Saturday’s race and is eyeing a tilt at the Listed Matamata Cup (1600m) next month.

“It was a bit sharp for him, a mile down there in Hastings, so we can forget that run. He should be more competitive over 2200m, he’s a big dour stayer,” he said.

“All going well, we’re going to try and get him to Riccarton for the New Zealand Cup. We’ll just see how he goes on Saturday.

“We have got options, there is another race at Matamata and Hawera on October 13, there’s the Feilding Cup at the end of October, or we might take him down and give him a lead-up run before the Cup, we’re not quite sure yet.”

Old believes both of his horses will put in good performances on Saturday, but he has elected to head to Taranaki where he thinks Our King Sway is the better chance of his two runners.

Driver John Morrison is looking to weave some magic with Stick Man, who has a tricky starting spot to contend with at Winton today.

The Paul Cour-trained pacer has drawn one on the second row in race 6, the $12,000 Nugget Final.

Stick Man’s two impressive recent wins and his solid last start fourth placing have him as the horse to beat in the event.

But it is up to Morrison to find a path for the three-year-old to show his talent.

“We will be having a go anyway,” Morrison quipped.

“Having only one horse on the second row should help; we will be trying to get out of there at some point.

“He is probably my best drive.

The camp is pretty happy with him and his races have showed that he is a pretty nice horse.”

■ APPRENTICE GOALS

Driven Fawcett focused on success If you spend 10 minutes talking with Matamata-based apprentice jockey Jasmine Fawcett you will soon learn that her success is no fluke.

The 25-year-old takes a positive psychological approach to her profession and draws heavily on several mentors.

“Recently I’ve transferred to Toby Autridge’s stable,” Fawcett said. “After every race meeting we sit down together and go through every single race and he’ll tell me what I did right, what I did wrong, where I saved an inch and where I lost an inch.

“We’re taking things to the next level, because I believe I’ve got the natural ability, I just need some guidance to put it all together.”

Autridge isn’t Fawcett’s only coach, her uncle 1976 All Black Kit Fawcett is another key influence in her life.

“He coaches me mentally, you’ve got to work hard to get results and I’ve got no distractions, there’s just one thing that I want to achieve and that’s riding winners,” Fawcett said.

“I’m not the fittest and I’m not the strongest but I believe that if I work harder than everyone else then I can outsmart them. I just always want to be better than average. I want to be good, I want to be the best that I can be. I’m not here to mess around, I’m not playing around and I take it seriously.”

That determination led the former New Zealand Mounted Games representative to claim her first stakes win aboard Emily Margaret in the New Zealand Bloodstock Canterbury Belle Stakes (1200m) at Riccarton Park last Saturday.

“Winning a stakes race was a big goal of mine and now that’s ticked off, I’ve just got more to look forward to achieving. It was a huge feeling for me and I’m very proud and

grateful to have had the opportunity,” she said.

Fawcett rode the Kevin and Pam Hughestrained filly to second on debut in May, a ride she is quick to credit her agent Tony Raklander for securing having never ridden for the Hughes stable previously. She then re-joined the daughter of Pins for her maiden win earlier this month.

Apprentice jockey Jasmine Fawcett won her first stakes race aboard Emily Margaret at Riccarton last Saturday.

she felt a lot smarter underneath me, she was thinking and she knew that she was a racehorse and she knew that she had a job to do out there as well, she was in the zone as much as I was,” Fawcett said.

“She’s definitely up there with being one of the smartest fillies I’ve ever sat on. I’m lucky to have the opportunity to ride her and it is my goal to stick with her.”

Emily Margaret is being aimed towards the Gr.1 Gavelhouse.com 46th New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m) and Fawcett is confidently putting her case forward for the ride.

“They have not guaranteed me the ride but in saying that they don’t have a reason to take me off her,” she said.

“It’s always a bit of a risk putting an apprentice on in a Group race but then again, I know the horse, I know the racecourse and I follow instructions.

“I don’t see a reason not to put me on. I’m confident and I’ve proven once already that I can handle the pressure so I don’t see why I can’t do it again.”

Outside of riding at Group level, Fawcett’s goals for the 2018-19 racing season are to ride 70 winners and win the apprentice jockey’s premiership.

She finished runner-up to Sam Weatherley in the premiership last season after recording 51 wins in what was her first full season of race riding.

When the Tinwald Cycling Club lines up its first races of the season on Sunday, it’s hoping to see a few new faces.

The club will open its season with races around the Christys Road block at Wakanui, with handicapped races over 38km for the open riders and over 16km for the division two riders and juniors (under 17).

Tinwald Cycling Club spokesperson Rob Hooper said the weekly social wheelers races on a Saturday afternoon throughout the winter had attracted good numbers and it was hoped that would continue through to the

Tinwald club’s summer Sunday afternoon racing.

He said numbers had been consistent over the past few years and the club would welcome new members, particularly younger members.

Hooper said a group of largely young cyclists from Leeston had become regulars at Tinwald races over the past couple of years, but the biggest growth the club had experienced in recent years had been at the other end of the age scale.

“The biggest growth area in our club seems to be probably the adult riders who now have a bit more time on their hands and played competitive sport and are

now looking for something to keep them active,” Hooper said.

“And there’s a crossover between multisport as well, so we are getting a lot of multisporters too.”

Many people who were gearing up to races like February’s Coast to Coast used Tinwald’s road races to help them prepare for the cycle leg of the race from one side of the South Island to the other.

But cycling wasn’t just for people who fitted into those sort of categories – cycling was a sport for everyone, Hooper said. The Tinwald Cycling Club catered to all abilities.

start at different times depending on their ability and it evens the field so anyone can cross the line in first place and take the spoils.

“We don’t get into high mileage races so we do between 30km and the biggest we do would be 64 to 65km, so we keep the distances quite manageable for most riders,” Hooper said.

The Tinwald Cycling Club also hosted a track night on a Friday night, which catered for the youngest cyclists through to adults, and the Whizz Wheelers had proven hugely popular with young cyclists in recent years.

mary school aged or even younger.

The Friday night track racing will start in a few weeks.

To ride in the club’s road races, kids needed to be around intermediate age and the club was happy for parents to ride with them, Hooper said.

Sunday’s opening race would start on Christys Road, just off Beach Road, with the juniors’ race starting at 12.45pm and the seniors at 2pm. Seniors needed to register by 1.30pm and juniors by 12.30pm.
