The closure axe has fallen on Ashburton’s i-Site; it will officially be out of business in four weeks.

After almost two months of uncertainty, the board of Experience Mid Canterbury (EMC) signed a deal that would see Ashburton’s East Street site close and Methven’s i-Site restructured.

The possible closure of both centres was announced at the end of July and sparked an outcry from tourist interests and many in the community.

Manager of the two i-Sites Kathryn Lorenzo said staff were told by email on

Monday that Ashburton would close.

“It’s a very sad day; we’ve got just four weeks and it’s still pretty raw at the moment for people,” she said.

The doors to the Ashburton centre have been closed since the closures were flagged, with the centre manager taking stress leave.

Experience Mid Canterbury gave staff until August 14 to provide feedback on the proposed closures and the board then had until August 22 to respond to these.

The EMC board wanted to close the two sites so it could redirect funds into other avenues of tourism promotion.

The organisation is given a $386,000 grant annually by the Ashburton District Council.

Ashburton’s closure comes when iSites were growing in number around the country, Lorenzo said.

Last-minute plea for i-Site

An 11th hour pitch was made last week to save Ashburton Isite from closure when a 1002 signature petition was presented to the Ashburton District Council.

Karen McIntyre, who has been involved with the tourism sector both as a home host and through the i-Site network, started the petition because she believes that they still had a strong role to play in providing information about the district.

Their value was proven across New Zealand, she said.

“The i-Sites must be staffed correctly and they must remain open to tourists every day, including weekends. They’re an asset to the district and they’re used by many people, often more by locals than tourists,” she said.

Experience Mid Canterbury signalled last month that it was considering closing both i-Sites.

Immediately the closures were proposed, Methven man Viv Barrett started a petition to save Methven’s site. That was presented to the council in August.

McIntyre’s petition ran for just two weeks but gained steady momentum. After it closed she continued to be approached by people who wanted to add their names.

“Yes, the centres do not make a profit and most do not but this is a service to the community we pay our rates for,” McIntyre said.

Ashburton’s i-Site has been open for many years and has grown as demand for its services grew.

Not everyone could or wanted to make bookings for accommodation and transport online and the i-Site had a steady business with this work, she said.

“Councillors, as the elected representatives of the community, I ask you to give this your deepest consideration.”

The decision was made after consultation with staff and in response to the findings of an Ashburton District Council sponsored section 17a review of the organisation in which the viability of the two sites was questioned.

The board was now working to ensure the Ashburton community had an alternative information service, he said.

From Wigram to Ashburton and now off to Wanaka

For decades Anne and Lyndsay Hydes have been the go-to people if you wanted an old door, a stained glass window, a pile of timber or some roofing iron.

Over the years they’ve counted in thousands their customers, most of whom have been renovating or restoring their homes. But that all ended in May when the business closed its doors.

Lyndsay had died and Anne decided she was too old to be lugging the odds and sods of a thousand homes around the yard on her own.

She sold what she could, gave away some of what she couldn’t sell and finally called in the clean up crews to clear out anything that was left.

And yesterday the secondhand goods yard on South Street lost the final links with its business past when a huge shed was moved off the site.

The building was the heart of the business, arriving on the back of a truck from Wigram airbase more than 20 years ago.

It left yesterday, again on the back of a truck, destined for a new life in Wanaka.

The departure was a very different affair to the arrival, Hydes said.

“They just took the peak off the roof and lifted it over the fence onto the truck and drove it away all within eight minutes. We had to take all the fences down to get it in.”

When the big shed left the site there was nothing to indicate a thriving secondhand business had traded there for more than two decades.

The couple were trading from another site in 1986 and moved to the South Street site in 1993.

“It was a good business and it worked for us. It was mostly people who were renovating or adding on to existing homes but we did have people building new homes with secondhand things,” Hydes said.

They gained a reputation around the South Island as a yard that could source just about anything and with their closure, local junk yard browsers will have to

head to Christchurch or Oamaru.

People would call and ask for quite specific items and Lyndsay could usually find them, she said.

“I was a bit sorry to close up but

it was just too much for me on my own. I tried not to take too much home with me and I’ll soon have to have a clearing sale down here.”

Ashburton River gets top priority

The Ashburton Water Zone Committee has given top priority to restoring flows in the over-allocated Ashburton River, including the potential early review of water takes for irrigation.

Save the Rivers and Forest and Bird organisations have been asking the committee since July how it intends to ensure plans for a minimum flow of six cumecs by 2023 are progressing.

They say the river has a normal

flow of around 30 cumecs.

Representatives from both groups pleaded again yesterday for progress, saying surface and groundwater takes thought to be connected to the river would not expire until after 2023 so time was running out to meet the target.

Save the Rivers president Keith Gunn said there were 52 surface water consents with minimum flow conditions but only five would expire before 2023. There are 96 groundwater consents

“It’s not rocket science. You put more water in or you take less out,” he told committee members at their monthly meeting yesterday.

“Unfortunately the legacy of issuing 35-year consent periods is obvious but should not be allowed to be a reason for continuing to starve the river.”

The Ashburton District Council has shut down about 2000km

of stockwater races, half its network, with the aim of improving flows in the river. It is taking well below its target 2900 litres per second and will continue to shut some races, said assets manager Andrew Guthrie.

The effect had been noticeable in the river, said zone committee member and retired hydrologist John Waugh, who said seven-day minimum flows in the river had improved from 2 to 3 cumecs in 2008 to 4 to 5 cumecs.

The zone committee has asked Environment Canterbury water scientists to prioritise technical work on how user reliability and river flows will likely change with new minimum flows and a potential review of consents.

Consent holders are being encouraged to look at transferring their surface water takes to groundwater takes.

ERO reports a mixed bag

The latest round of Education Review Office reports have delivered a mixed bag of results for Mid Canterbury schools.

The office’s verdict is in on nine schools around the district – Rakaia, St Joseph’s, Mayfield, Hinds, Mt Somers Springburn, Our Lady of the Snows and Ashburton Intermediate.

Board of Trustees members at Netherby School and Ashburton Borough School have also viewed draft reports, although they are not yet publically available.

Ashburton Borough School principal Sam Winterbourn said his school was celebrating a “very positive” report.

“At the last board meeting the draft ERO report was adopted,” he said.

“They were delighted in both the tone of the report and its acknowledgement of the work being undertaken by staff and the board on behalf of our students.”

He said that as the only independent crown office, the ERO was able to assure that a practice was robust, focused and “able to meet the needs of the students”.

Most schools are staying on their regular three year review cycle, which is one of three categories identified by the ERO.

Schools needing the most improvement are put on a one-to-two year review cycle, and schools performing exceptionally are put on a three year review cycle.

This year the ERO advised Ashburton Intermediate that it will need reviewing in one-to-two years after detecting “significant disparity in achievement for some groups of children”.

The report directed Ashburton Intermediate to continue working to build effective evaluation and inquiry, in order to “reduce the significant disparity which exists between overall student achievement and that of Maori and Pacific children”.

Principal Brent Gray said the school was already “well aware” of the issue, and had been working to provide targeted support for students at the time the report was carried out.

He said the same issue had been highlighted at many schools across the country, and Ashburton Intermediate was able to show the ERO progress within levels for the supported learning students, as well as many other positive aspects of the school.

Last year, 184 schools around the country were placed in the one-to-two year category.

It might have been a small, low-key affair, but Friday’s opening of a new exhibition space in the Ashburton Museum has elevated the district in the world of touring exhibitions.

A room, originally planned as a café in the museum-art gallery complex has now become a dedicated display space thanks to sponsorship from the Murney family. And that space is now open, housing its first exhibition Balls, Bullets & Boots commemorating New Zealand’s top rugby players who fought in World War One. Kate and Hank Murney, their children and grandchildren have committed to sponsoring the exhibition space for 20 years and at Friday’s opening Kate Murney said the opening exhibition couldn’t have been more fitting for a rugby-made family.

For the family, sponsoring the exhibition room was a way to make a solid commitment to a community that has been their home since 1975.

“Our first daughter Jayne was only six weeks old when we arrived. We’ve been involved with rugby and our children have been in rugby teams. We’ve enjoyed our lives in Ashburton so much and because this first exhibition involved rugby, that really opened the door for use,” Murney said.

The new museum was a positive thing for Ashburton and having additional exhibition space would create many new opportunities, she said.

Mayor Donna Favel spoke at the opening and read a message from retired Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew.

Official speaker was long-time family friend Mick Hanham.

When the Murney family arrived in Ashburton rugby became their immedi-

ate connection through the Celtic club, Hanham said. “Club rugby, rep rugby and national rugby, it brings everyone together. It’s a binder for the community and for the country,” he said.

In thanking the Murney family for their generosity in sponsoring the exhibition space, Hanham said it would be a real advantage for Ashburton.

“It’s almost like building a grandstand at Celtic,” he said.

Balls, Bullets & Boots commemorates New Zealand’s top rugby players who were also soldiers in the First World War. Some had already made their mark on the rugby field and some of those never returned; others fought and returned home to take up the All Black cudgels of their predecessors.

The exhibition was designed and produced by the New Zealand Rugby Museum and opened in Palmerston North in August 2015. It will be on tour until 2019 but Nelson and Ashburton are the only two South Island centres to play host.

It’s a highly interactive exhibition and along with a host of rugby memorabilia, there are elements and activities that will take viewers into the trenches – from periscopes that will peer over the edge into enemy territory and to a capsule containing the smells of war.

A sound booth provides an opportunity for visitors to hear rugby players talking.

Visitors enter through the ‘Home Ground’ Entrance, a stylised 1914 rugby changing room. Here they meet their onscreen guide for the exhibition, Anton Oliver, and the XV players and a coach whose life stories feature throughout.

It wraps up with a return home section that has been set up at the opposite end of the museum.

Balls, Bullets & Boots opened in the Ashburton Museum on September 23 and will run until November 12.

Dozens of Year 2 students from around town served up tennis volleys, football shots and cricket strikes yesterday morning for Have a Go day at the Ashburton Domain.

Students from Ashburton Borough School, Rakaia School, Wakanui School and St Joseph’s Catholic School gathered to try their hand at a number of sports and out-

door activities teed up by Sport Canterbury.

Sports co-ordinator Mark Reid said each participating class had the opportunity to try five of 10 different activities.

“It’s basically a chance to introduce the students to a number of sports,” he said.

“In the past we haven’t always had great weather, but we’re very lucky today.”

Year 4 and 5 students also gathered at the domain for games of turbo touch yesterday.

Logburner deadline looms

Time is running out for homeowners who want to change their home heating from old logburner to a new low emission model.

The change has been signalled for several years as a way to deal with air pollution caused by home fires. And to meet national air quality standards Environment Canterbury was charged with cleaning up air across Canterbury.

The national air standards require airsheds to have no more than one breach of air standards a year by 2020.

For Ashburton that meant all logburners aged 15 years and older had to be replaced with new low emissions burners. Many homeowners made the change but just as many did not. Now they do not have a choice.

Under new rules introduced ahead of this winter, tardy homeowners have until October 31 to obtain a permit for their new

burner, or low emission options will be off the table.

After that date, Ashburton District Council building services manager Michael Wong said the only wood burning option will be ultra low emission burners. Currently there are few options on the market and those that are available are significantly more expensive than their low emission cousins.

Once you have a permit you have one year to have the new burner installed.

The log burner debate has raged since 2011 with strong opposition from urban property owners to the requirement to replace logburners most said still had years of good service remaining.

In the run up to the October 31 deadline, Wong said his department was seeing a steady stream of applications for logburner permits.

The same rules apply in Timaru where the drive towards logburner replacement has only just begun.

Confusion over daylight saving Ever wondered why we put our clocks back or forward?

The idea was first suggested by Benjamin Franklin back in the 1780s.

Its observance in New Zealand has chopped and changed over the years since it was first put forward in 1909, with the movement in time shifting between an hour and half an hour, while the weeks and months it applied to also changed over the years.

The last change came in 2007, when the

government extended the daylight saving period, now set an hour, from 24 to 27 weeks in length, announcing that it would run from the last Sunday in September until the first Sunday in April.

In September people need to put their clocks forward, while in April they go back.

The Guardian apologises for any confusion it caused last weekend by advising people they needed to put their clocks back, when they should have been going forward.

Mum booted out of shop for bringing baby A new mum is livid after she was booted from a beauty salon for bringing her sleeping baby.

The Christchurch woman, who does not want to be named, says she faced discrimination from Simply Beauty on Monday.

She was inside the business for 10 minutes waiting for her mother to get her eyebrows done.

It wasn’t until another customer sat down that an employee of the Hornby salon approached the mum and said, “You’ve got a cute little boy” after she lifted up the pram’s curtain to have a look.

But then the employee asked the mum to leave and told her the “pram is not a good look for this shop”, the mum said.

“She said, ‘I’m going to have to get you to leave, we don’t allow babies in the salon’.”

“I thought she was joking. It was so rude.

“It’s not like my baby was crying or anything. If he was making a noise I’m the first person to get up and leave the place.”

The mum had spent hours walking around the mall and was reluctant to go and stand outside.

When she expressed her views the

staff member offered to take her baby for a walk.

“I don’t know this lady. Why would I let a stranger take my 4-month-old baby for a walk?

“It was a very bizarre experience for a place that should want to have any woman in there, they’re the people that buy the service.”

The mum was so angry she posted a complaint to the Simply Beauty Facebook page and said it had multiple comments from other mums who had also been

told to leave due to their children.

Simply Beauty apologised and then deleted the comments.

The policy on its website states: “To keep our salons safe and relaxing, we can’t let your little ones under the age of 10 inside the salon. So be sure to take some ‘you’ time and leave them at home when you’re planning a visit.”

Simply Beauty owner Pam Ensor said she told the client politely and respectfully that children were not allowed in their salons.

She said the business put the policy in place five years ago for health and safety reasons.

“Our business uses chemicals, hot waxes and equipment to deliver the best quality of services to our clients. We also operate within a relatively confined space, including the delivery of some services within our waiting areas.

“We appreciate that this policy can create challenges for some clients, but we are acting in the interests of all clients, their children and staff and strictly apply the policy.”

Ensor said the business had no intention to review the policy.

Zdenek (Sid) Hanzlik died last week.

Man who died outside Parliament identified A man injured outside Parliament on Thursday last week has been named as Rotorua man Zdenek (Sid) Hanzlik.

The 60-year-old Czech-born man died in hospital after an incident on Parliament grounds.

Police released Hanzlik’s name yesterday.

Hanlik’s death has been referred to the coroner and police said they could not make any further comment.

Funeral details have not been announced but a friend placed a death notice in yesterday’s

Rotorua Daily Post that said “Good mate. Dear friend. Will miss you. RIP.” Hanzlik ran a mechanic’s business from Sunset Road in Rotorua called F.H. Autoservice.

He had previously appeared in media in 2010 relating to a dispute over payment of a car he had worked on.

In that article, it said Hanlik emigrated to Britain in 1987, was a qualified marine engineer and mechanic, and gained New Zealand residency in 1991.

T

hat there are about 100 farms within the Ashburton Water Zone that are either not on track or are requiring follow-up support to meet standards identified as farming under good management practices is a bit of a concern.

An Ashburton Water Zone committee meeting held yesterday heard that ECan launched a campaign in May to make farmers aware of what would be required to comply with those standards.

Information packs followed, setting out what farmers would have to do to bring themselves into line, if they were not already there.

Since then contact has been made with 60 per cent of priority farms, primarily by phone.

Of the farms contacted, more than 70 per cent have taken the action needed for their farm, whether it was completing a farm environment plan and preparing a nitrogen baseline – or joining the waitlist, or have applied for consent.

It’s great that the majority of farmers have taken action because whether people like it or not, the new regulations are not going to go away, so burying your head in the sand is not an option.

There’s always something to be said for taking action when you see change on the horizon, rather than waiting for it to arrive.

By then you’re often behind the eight ball, and your options are less than they were originally.

By acting early, it’s possible to maintain some sort of control over your own destiny.

In this case, if you have not taken action, you’re running the risk of missing the deadline of at least starting to get your house in order. And that, in the end, may come at a cost.

What is also of concern, particularly considering the debate over the state of the nation’s waterways and who is responsible for any degradation, is that some farmers are dragging the chain when it comes to showing they do follow best practice.

That sort of attitude is not going to help anyone.

In fact, it’s going to take away from the hard work already done by many to show that they do care about the rights of future generations to swim in our rivers.

L

ast week the Ashburton District Council kicked off It’s Our Place – a campaign to get people thinking about what they want for our district.

I think it’s extremely important that local people have the opportunity to give their thoughts and ideas about what they want to happen in Ashburton in the long term.

It’s Our Place encourages residents to respond to three short but thought-provoking questions. The first question was released last Thursday and asks – “What should happen in our district over the next 10 years?”

The next two questions will be launched in October and November, respectively and will continue to build on each other.

The answers will help give the council some clear direction on what it should include in its draft long-term plan for 2018-28.

A long-term plan is produced by the council every three years and outlines what the council will do over the next 10 years and how it will be funded.

The draft 2018-28 plan will be put out for public consultation in early 2018, when you’ll get to have a further say on what should happen in the district.

All feedback that is submitted on the draft plan will be taken into consideration, before the council approves the final longterm plan.

A total of 356 submissions was received on the Ashburton District Council’s draft longterm plan for 2015-25. This time around, I’m hoping we can attract even more.

This new approach to longterm planning is a great way of encouraging more people to get involved with issues that matter to them.

I want to take the opportunity to thank all the dedicated people that have made these events happen in the past and those that work on the many other activities in our district that make Ashburton a lively and community-minded place to live. Behind the scenes to any event, there is always a team of people who are doing everything possible to make it the best it can be.

If you are an individual or group and thinking about planning an event in Mid Canterbury, there are a few ways that you can receive support and funding.

Experience Mid Canterbury is funded by the Ashburton District Council and markets the Mid Canterbury region as a visitor destination.

There are a number of ways it can help with events including supplying images for promotional material; information and assistance with bidding docu-

ments; day trip itineraries; and event promotion.

‘A declaration of war’ North Korea’s foreign minister yesterday asserted that the pariah state has the right to defend itself by shooting down US planes, even if they are not in the country’s airspace.

Ri Yong Ho, speaking to reporters at a hotel across the street from the United Nations, said US President Donald Trump’s comments at the General Assembly last week constituted a declaration of war.

“The whole world should clearly remember it was the US who first declared war on our country,” he said. “Since the United States declared war on our country, we will have every right to make countermeasures, including the right to shoot down United States strategic bombers even when they are not inside the airspace border of our country.”

Ri’s remarks were the most direct and threatening so far since Trump gave a combative address to the General Assembly last week in which he threatened to “totally destroy” North Korea.

Residents flee amid fears volcano to erupt Up to 50,000 people have fled the largest volcano on the Indonesian island of Bali, fearing it will erupt at any moment.

A natural disaster has been declared in parts of Bali as authorities imposed an exclusion zone around Mount Agung following increasing volcanic activity.

Strong tremors rippled through areas in the eastern part of the one of the world’s

most popular tourist destinations, packed with Australian families enjoying the school holidays, sparking authorities to order people to leave a 12km zone around the mountain.

The numbers from disaster officials are more than double previous estimates and are continuing to rise, they say.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency has praised the welcoming response of local communities on Bali to the flood of evacuees.

The agency has sent food and logistical supplies to the area, while also calling for public donations.

Thousands are living in temporary shelters, sport centres, village halls and with relatives or friends.

Peters slates Spierings’ payout

Fonterra CEO Theo Spierings has received a 78.5 per cent pay rise taking his annual pay package to more than $8 million.

Bank sues ex-wife of LWR fraudster Westpac New Zealand is suing the ex-wife of convicted Lane Walker Rudkin fraudster Ken Anderson for being a party to the fraud and is seeking damages of $50.8 million.

The lender claims Patricia Anderson either defrauded it, or was part of a conspiracy to defraud it, by signing documents she knew were false in securing a $2.5m letter of credit facility, which masked the financial strain the clothing manufacturer was under.

She sought a number of interlocutory orders for the lender to amend its claim for further and better particulars. Associate Judge Rob Osborne granted some of Anderson’s requests and dismissed others in a recently published September 12 judgment in the High Court in Christchurch.

Westpac was left out of pocket

since it tipped Lane Walker Rudkin into receivership in April 2009, recovering $41m of the $130m owed at the time. It first served the claim on Anderson in mid-2016, the judgment shows.

Patricia and Ken Anderson were signatories and guarantors to the lender’s offer of credit for Lane Walker Rudkin in 2001, and Westpac claims they said they were accountants, the judgment said. The couple split up in 2005, and a year later her guarantee from the original offer of credit expired.

Westpac claims Lane Walker Rudkin began facing financial problems from 2004 and had a shortfall in working capital which managers and Patricia Anderson tried to bridge with the letter of credit facility, which the judgment dubs the LOC fraud. The

bank claims the use of the facility was dishonest because “invoices for fictitious stock were created to enable funds to be drawn down” and that Anderson was executing documents she knew were false, the judgment said.

Lane Walker Rudkin’s former owner Ken Anderson pleaded guilty to four fraud charges in 2013, where he made false statements to secure lending from Westpac, and sentenced to six years imprisonment. He was granted parole in January last year.

The Serious Fraud Office initially laid 82 charges against Ken Anderson in 2011 before his guilty plea, saying at the time the fraud “had a profound effect on the region, with LWR having employed many staff and enjoyed an international reputation”.

Kathmandu Holdings pushed up net after-tax profit 13.5 per cent to make $38 million in the July 31, 2017 year, saying new products and cost control helped drive the good result.

Winston Peters says Fonterra boss Theo Spierings’ $8.32 million paycheck for 2017 is why shareholders in New Zealand need “say-onpay” laws.

Fonterra’s annual result, released on Monday, revealed Spierings was paid a base salary of $2.463m, benefits of $170,036, short-term incentive pay of $1.832m and long-term incentive pay of $3.855m.

“Is this corporate New Zealand?

Fat-cat payouts for doing their day job,” Peters said.

“Shareholders need to be reminded that their payout of $6.52 per kilogram of milksolids this season, is well under what they got in real terms for the final two seasons before Mr Spierings came onto the management scene.”

Peters said Spierings forwent a bonus worth $1.83m during one of Fonterra’s worst payout years, but has won that bonus back in “an average season”.

There’s only one thing all kebab dishes have in common – you need to soak your skewers for an hour or so before threading on ingredients otherwise there’ll be a fire in the grill pan.

Lamb and apricot kebabs 225g low-fat natural yoghurt 2t curry powder 1T caster sugar 1T vegetable oil 1 large onion 220g diced lamb 350g dried apricots 8 skewers ■ Mix together the yoghurt, curry powder, sugar and oil in a small bowl.

■ Taste and adjust seasonings to your liking.

■ Peel and cut the onion into 3cm pieces.

■ Thread skewers alternating lamb, onion and dried apricot.

■ Place them into a large flat container and pour in the sauce.

■ Make sure the kebabs are well coated.

■ Refrigerate and allow to marinate overnight or for at least 8 hours.

■ Preheat barbecue or grill plate to medium and lightly oil cooking grate.

■ Cook the kebabs over medium heat for 8 to 10 minutes on each side, or till done to your preference.

Lamb kofta kebabs 4 cloves garlic, minced 1t sea salt 500g lamb mince 3T grated onion 3T chopped fresh parsley 1T ground coriander 1t ground cumin 1/2 T ground cinnamon 1/2 t ground allspice 1/4 t cayenne pepper 1/4 t ground ginger 1/4 t ground black pepper 28 bamboo skewers, soaked in water for 30 minutes ■ Mash the garlic into a paste with the salt using a mortar and pestle.

■ Mix the garlic into the lamb.

■ Add onion, parsley, coriander, cumin, cinnamon, allspice, cayenne pepper, ginger and pepper.

■ Mix until well blended.

■ Form the mixture into 28 balls.

■ Form each ball around the tip of a skewer, flattening into an oval.

■ Place the kebabs onto a baking tray, cover and refrigerate at least 30 minutes, or up to 12 hours.

■ Preheat barbecue or grill plate

Honey chicken kebabs 3T vegetable oil 4T honey 4T soy sauce 1/4 t freshly ground black pepper 8 skinless, boneless chicken breast fillets – cut into cubes 2 cloves garlic, crushed 5 onions, cut into wedges 2 red peppers, cut into pieces 12 skewers

Oil for the grill hotplate ■ In a large bowl, whisk together oil, honey, soy sauce and pepper.

■ Before adding chicken, reserve a small amount of marinade to brush on to kebabs while cooking.

■ Place the chicken, garlic, onions and peppers in the bowl.

■ Marinate in the refrigerator at least 2 hours (the longer the better).

■ Preheat barbecue or grill plate to high heat.

■ Drain marinade from the chicken and vegetables then discard.

■ Thread chicken and vegetables alternately on to the skewers.

■ Lightly oil the cooking grill hotplate.

■ Cook kebabs for 12 to 15 minutes, until chicken juices run clear.

■ Turn and brush with reserved marinade frequently.

Satay chicken skewers 6 chicken breast fillets, cut into long strips Marinade: 6T tomato puree 6T soy sauce 2T peanut oil 4 cloves garlic, finely diced 1/2 t black pepper 1/2 t cumin Peanut sauce: 1T peanut oil 1 clove garlic, finely diced 1/4 onion, finely diced 2T soy sauce 3T sugar 8T peanut butter 1C (250ml) water 1/2 lemon, juiced

a frypan over medium-high heat then add the garlic and onion.

Cook until softened, about 4 minutes.

Add soy sauce, sugar, peanut butter and 1C water.

Simmer 5 minutes, or until thickened to your desired consistency.

Add lemon juice and remove from heat.

Preheat the barbecue to high heat.

Thread the chicken strips on to skewers, one strip per skewer.

Barbecue skewers 10 minutes, turning once during cooking.

Serve immediately with the peanut sauce for dipping.

Asian beef kebabs 500-750g rump steak or scotch fillet steak 1t minced garlic 1t minced ginger 1t minced chilli 2T dark soy sauce 2T oyster sauce Yoghurt chilli dipping sauce 1/4 C non-fat plain yoghurt 1/4 C sweet chilli sauce 2T chopped fresh mint ■ Cut the beef steak into large 3cm cubes.

■ Place in a resealable bag with the garlic, ginger, chilli, dark soy sauce and oyster sauce.

■ Seal the bag and toss to coat evenly. Refrigerate for 1 hour or up to 1 day.

■ Thread on to 6 bamboo skewers and cook over a moderately high heat for about 6-8 minutes until the meat is well browned but still moist.

■ Serve with salad accompanied with the dipping sauce.

■ Yoghurt chilli dipping sauce: Mix the yoghurt, sweet chilli sauce and mint together.

■ Add the chicken strips and mix well. Let marinate at least 15 minutes.

plate, grill or frying pan to a medium heat. Place the onion, garlic, bread with milk, egg, dijon mustard and parmesan cheese (if using), in a large bowl and mix well to break up the bread or mix in a food processor.

Add the beef mince and season. Mix to combine.

Using wet hands mix together forming into 8 patties about 2.5cm thick, pressing together just enough to form loose but shaped patties. Make a horizontal slit in the side of each patty and place in a small slice of the bistro butter.

Place the patties onto a well heated oiled barbecue plate or pan. Cook for about 5 minutes on each side before transferring to a warm plate.

Cover loosely with foil and leave to rest while you grill the vegetables.

Grilled vegetables: Place prepared vegetables in a large bowl and toss with oil and lightly season. Cook on the barbecue, grill or frying pan for about 3 minutes on each side until tender.

To assemble: Stack the ingredients by placing one patty on a plate and spread with a little hummus.

Place on some grilled vegetables then top with another patty. Finish with a few more grilled vegetables.

Repeat with remaining patties and vegetables. Serve with a salad.

Organisers are pleased with how the Muddy Good Run ran in Rakaia on Sunday.

“It was a beautiful day and everything went off really well,” organiser John Moore said.

There were 680 entrants in the event, which was down on last year’s total.

“The interesting thing was, that out of those 680 entries, there was only 115 with Mid Canterbury addresses, which means lots of people were com-

ing in for it, which is great for the local economy and Rakaia,” he said.

“Everyone I spoke to loved it.

“They were really happy and covered in mud.”

The focus now shifts to the major job of packing up after

the event, which was expected to take around five days, with all the mud pools and other large obstacles needing to be cleared away.

“It is probably the biggest setup and pack down for what we do,” Moore said.

Two 20-year-old New Zealand strikers will be unleashed on the Oceania Cup men’s hockey tournament in Sydney. Sharp domestic form has resulted in the selection of Sam Lane and the uncapped Daniel Harris among the forward line options for the Black Sticks when they contest the three-nation tournament in October. After some close battles on the fairways and greens, the club championships have been decided at both the Tinwald Golf Club and Methven Golf Club.

In the men’s final at Tinwald, Regan Stills was able to overcome last year’s winner Nigel Heney, while Bronwyn Flannery was able to defend her title against Jo Peacock.

It was a busy weekend for Flan-

nery, as well as Heney and Stills, who all represented Aorangi the following day in their match against Canterbury.

In Methven, Dayle Lucas picked up the win against CJ Middleton in the men’s final,

while Gayle O’Duffy picked up the women’s title against Ange Mowbray.

Seven titles were played for in total in Methven, while nine titles and three plates were up for grabs at Tinwald.

Two Kiwis qualify for NZ Women’s Open Kiwi amateurs Britney Dryland and Juliana Hung have been thrust into the LPGA Tour spotlight after booking late berths for the New Zealand Women’s Open.

Aucklander Dryland and Christchurch’s Hung were among six qualifiers to advance to this week’s historic tournament beginning at Windross Farm Golf

Course near Auckland tomorrow.

The pair did enough at the final qualifying event, comprising one round at Royal Auckland Golf Club on Monday.

The event was won by South Korean Selin Hyun, who shot a two-under 70 to finish two strokes clear of Australian Tamara Johns.

New Zealand’s strength in twocrew boats has been underlined with imposing wins on the second day of the rowing world championships in Florida.

The women’s pair, women’s double and men’s double all won their heats comfortably in Sarasota, matching the achievements of three Kiwi heat winners on day one.

Less impressive yesterday were the women’s single sculler Hannah Osborne (third in her heat) and the women’s four (sixth), who must contest repechages.

In hot, humid conditions, Kerrie Gowler and Grace Prendergast became the first Kiwi crew to advance directly to the A final, aided by the small size of their field.

They had too much power for British rivals Holly Hill and Melissa Wilson, pulling clear in the second quarter of the 2000m journey.

Winners at both World Cup regattas they entered this year, Gowler and Prendergast turned up the power over the second half.

Their time was pipped by fastest qualifiers the United States though, who won the other heat.

Double scullers John Storey and Christopher Harris pulled in the fast-starting Estonian boat before holding off second-placed Bulgaria and Germany.

They book a semi-final berth, along with Brooke Donoghue and Olivia Loe, who led from the outset and kept good distance on nearest rivals Greece and Denmark.

Eru makes Maori side

Another Mid Canterbury rugby player is hoping to make his name on the big stage next week.

Eru Cooper-Tahuri was named to play in the New Zealand Maori under 18 side that will play two games next week.

“I found out a week ago, I got a call at 9.30am from one of the guys who is involved with the New Zealand Maori,” he said.

“He rung me to tell me and congratulate me, I was a bit speechless.

“I’ve had a few clubmates and friends and family get in touch to say congratulations.”

Cooper-Tahuri worked his way into the side from the South Island Maori side, after playing two games in Rotorua.

“There was a training camp which the South Island Maori were selected from, and then we played games against two other sides,” he said.

“From there they selected the two teams.”

Apart from time spent playing basketball, rugby has always been the number one sport for Cooper-Tahuri, who first started playing rippa rugby before age five.

When it comes to the reason why he loves rugby and keeps playing it, the answer is simple.

“Just the whole team part of it all.

“You are out there as a team and not just by yourself, and everyone is friendly and it is a great team atmosphere,” he said.

“And the physicality keeps it interesting.”

The halfback played this season for the Celtic Colts side, before jumping into the Canterbury Maori side once the season finished.

Cooper-Tahuri also made an appearance for the Mid Canterbury Colts side in their first game of the season against Ellesmere off the bench, picking up a yellow card.

“That was my first card of the season which was a bit annoying,” he said.

When it comes to players to look up to, the All Blacks are the obvious choice.

“If I had to say someone it would be Aaron Smith.

“He has had a big influence on me, but just anyone that has pulled on the black jersey in general.

“It is a big goal for me as a player,” he said.

Making it to the top in any sport requires work, and Cooper-Tahuri has been putting in the hard yards.

“By myself I do a bit of cardio and a lot of skill related stuff,” he said.

“Usually I do it whenever I can or in between trainings, so basically every day.”

Tahuri will travel to Levin tomorrow to join the team, before playing two games next week, one on Monday against the New Zealand Schools’ Barbarians, and the other on Friday against the Tongan Schools’ side.

“I am expecting there to be a real competitive edge, not just from the opposition but also in the team against the guy I am competing against in my position,” he said.

“It is going to be hard but I am looking forward to the challenge.”

The 18-year-old, whose lineage covers Ngati Kahungungu, Ngai Tuhoe and Nga Rauru, said he hopes the tournament will be chance to build a platform to base his rugby career from.

“It is something I want to take really far and hopefully this will be something that can help me do that,” he said.

Possibly the most intriguing selection decision the All Blacks face in Argentina is what to do at second five-eighth.

One can probably assume Anton Lienert-Brown will start at centre, with Ryan Crotty given the week off alongside other senior statesmen.

Lienert-Brown was exceptional off the bench against the Boks; light on his feet, evasive, strong.

While more than comfortable at second-five, where he has featured frequently for the Chiefs, the All Blacks feel his natural outside break is better suited one wider.

This week at least, the choice between incumbent Sonny Bill Williams and Ngani Laumape to partner Lienert-Brown does not appear so straightforward.

On the face of it the timing seems right to hand Laumape his second test start.

He’s only had four minutes off the bench against Argentina in New Plymouth since his impressive starting debut in the third Lions test at Eden Park. Four minutes in two-and-a-half months is hardly enough to push your case.

Visions of his audacious pass to Lienert-Brown in the drawn Lions decider which set up Jordie Barrett’s try will long be etched in the memory.

Laumape was also on hand to latch onto Barrett’s tap back for the opening try as the two rookies shone on the big stage.

Ngani Laumape will be hoping to get the selectors’ nod this week.

These instances encapsulate the anticipation and confidence that underpinned Laumape’s breakout season with the Hurricanes.

This year he was undeniably New Zealand’s form No. 12. He was destructive, fast, brutal and, even, subtle at times. He was unstoppable close to the line and so often gave the Hurricanes frontfoot ball with direct simplicity.

Elements of his game remain raw but his distribution, decision-making and defence all improved markedly in 2017, culminating in his rise above Malakai Fekitoa and George Moala.

Form isn’t everything when it comes to the All Blacks, though.

They have been clear all along

Williams and Crotty, with their experience and balance, are the preferred midfield combination.

That pairing will almost certainly start against the Boks in Cape Town next week; still viewed as the All Blacks’ toughest Rugby Championship fixture.

So why not give Laumape a chance and then bring Williams back?

Williams has been more solid than spectacular this season.

His late start to the year, coupled with niggles and a month-long suspension, haven’t helped build consistency.

This complicates matters as the All Blacks may believe Williams needs game-time.

The South African side is under siege following their 57-0 defeat in Albany, the worst in the country’s 126-year test history. Kerr-Barlow primed Tawera Kerr-Barlow is taking any test match minutes with the All Blacks as a bonus as he eyes a possible fifth appearance against Argentina. Kerr-Barlow and fellowhalfback TJ Perenara fronted the tourists’ first press conference since landing in Buenos Aires ahead of the Rugby Championship test against the Pumas on Sunday.

“I’m not thinking about anything else. I’m fortunate that Steve and the coaching group keep selecting me and have faith in me,” KerrBarlow said.

the season came for the Blues against the British and Irish Lions where he scored a try from a penalty which hit the post, and in combination with Steven Luatua helped lay on the stunning match-winner for Ihaia West.

In between times his carries were telling.

But elsewhere he’s been patchy.

His combination with Beauden Barrett hasn’t quite gelled, emphasised no more than in Dunedin where Williams appeared to get his timing wrong on a number of occasions.

He performed well against the Pumas in New Plymouth; charging hard, defending strongly and keeping things simple.

But even in the romp over the Boks errors were evident in his work.

It only strengthened the urge to see Laumape given another, proper crack. He’s been patient with Williams afforded every chance to stamp his authority.

Starting Williams from the bench could also serve another purpose. It was, after all, a role he performed brilliantly behind Ma’a Nonu and Conrad Smith at the 2015 World Cup. Like all rotation selections this week the scales will be weighed with risk and reward in mind.

The All Blacks know they must first win this test but, clearly, development is a major focus too.

The old-school fitness camp the Wallabies suffered through is set to pay huge dividends as they return to South Africa’s highveld, assistant coach Mick Byrne says.

In brief Orange shows the way

Monbet-out option Woodend co-trainer Greg Hope was pleased to learn the NZ TAB had opened a Monbet-out Dominion Handicap market yesterday for the Group One trot race at Addington in November.

TAB bookmaker Richard Wilson advised a Monbet-out option was opened following reports last year’s winner Monbet was rated a 50-50 chance to take his place this year on Monday.

“That’s a good way of doing it.

“It seems fairer for everyone,” Hope said.

“In a week or two, if Monbet is more likely than 50-50 to start, we can re-open the market with him in it,” Wilson said.

Hope advised Harness Racing New Zealand stipendiary steward Nick Ydgren that a scan on Monday of one of Monbet’s front legs indicated he was showing some aggravation of a minor injury the horse sustained in his three-yearold season.

“There was a little bit of heat in the leg and you first think the worst,” Hope said.

“But the vet said if we go easy on him for a week to 10 days he

Hope, who co-trains the top trotter with wife Nina, said they wouldn’t risk him if at any stage

he wasn’t healthy before the Dominion.

Monbet, now six, had come up “super” in training, according to Hope.

Blair Orange continues to lead the national drivers premiership with 24 wins as he chases his first NZ title, with Oamaru-based Matthew Williamson reining home five winners last weekend to move into second on 15, ahead of David Butcher on 13. Defending champion Dexter Dunn sits on seven after his late start to the season, steering home four winners at the weekend.

“He’d worked up with Everybody Knows (first-up winner at Oamaru last Sunday) and was pretty good to go (to the races) as well,” he said.

Monbet underwent an operation to have bone chip removed from a knee last December after going unbeaten in three fiveyear-old starts last October-November.

He won the Ashburton Trotters Mile in 1:55.2 last October, before winning in NZ record times in both starts during NZ Cup week.

Monbet won the Group One NZ Trotting Free-For-All at Addington on NZ Cup day in 2:21.7 (1:56.9 mile rate) for the mobile 1950m, three days before his Group One Dominion win in a staggering 4:00.7 for the stand start 3200m.

The brilliant squaregaiter has raced only 34 times for 23 wins, earning $770,714 in stakes.

On the TAB Monbet-out option, the front-line of betting is shared between All Stars stable newcomer Aldebaran Eagle, Bordeaux and Dark Horse, who are all rated $7 chances.

Storm powered by ad-lib

By Matt Encarnacion Melbourne’s new-found ad-lib play has made them a tougher proposition than the one that appeared in last year’s NRL decider, according to Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan.

The Storm have the opportunity to avenge their 2016 grand final defeat to Flanagan’s Sharks when they meet North Queensland in the NRL finale on Sunday.

And the premiership-winning mentor believes Craig Bellamy has found a way to sharpen his team’s attacking edge compared to the one that fell just short last season.

“They stay so structured in what they do, but they’ve still got the ability to play to their structure and ad-lib,” Flanagan said on Fox Sports’ NRL 360.

Statistics back up Flanagan’s observations.

Melbourne’s 633 points in the regular season this year is the most they have scored in the past 12 years under Bellamy’s watch, dating back to the 640 they totalled in 2005.

Throughout their current eight-game winning streak, they are averaging 33 points a game.

Coupled with their trademark defensive ability to strangle other teams out of contests, the Storm are winning by more than 22 points per game during the run.

It was only two years ago, when the Storm finished one game short of the grand final, that they

Sin-bin an option NRL referees boss Tony Archer has warned Melbourne and North Queensland his officials won’t be afraid to use the sin-bin in Sunday’s grand final. No player has been sin-binned in a grand final since Terry Lamb in 1995. There has been an increase to 46 uses of the 10-minute penalty for professional fouls this year – compared to 17 in 2016. “I think we proved that in the first round of the semi-finals (when Cronulla’s James Maloney and Melbourne’s Cameron Munster were both sin-binned),” Archer said.

Kiwis in grand final

Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan says Craig Bellamy has improved the Storm from last year. scored just 467 points for the year – the lowest mark in Bellamy’s tenure.

The most they have registered in a single Bellamy season is 684 – his second year in 2004.

Flanagan pointed to Curtis Scott’s crucial try in last Friday’s preliminary final win over Brisbane as evidence of Bellamy’s

openness to straying from what used to be a rigid game plan.

“That was a tight game leading into halftime and probably one of their youngest players in the side, Curtis Scott gets the ball and on play three, runs,” Flanagan said.

“He has the belief and freedom to get his arms free and pass to

Josh Addo-Carr to go and run the length of the field.

“That’s having the belief and freedom within the structure to play what you see.

“Craig’s got a good ability to be really structured but you can play what you see as well within that structure, and that’s the strength of the Storm.”

Green makes tough call on Scott

And Matt Scott was shattered.

But North Queensland enforcer Jason Taumalolo has backed Cowboys mentor Paul Green’s huge call to rule Scott out of Sunday’s NRL grand final 17, admitting fielding the co-captain would be a risk.

Green held a surprise press conference yesterday to declare test prop Scott would not feature against Melbourne in the season decider unless someone was injured at training this week.

And in a bid to shut down more speculation, Green said injury concerns Coen Hess (knee), Ethan Lowe (cheekbone) and John Asiata (hand) were not in doubt for the club’s second grand final in three years.

Green looked at his intense, focused best at the press conference but Taumalolo described a very different man who told the team the huge news earlier that day.

“I think he lost some sleep over it last night,” Taumalolo said of the Cowboys coach.

“For him to just be mentioned to be selected is huge,” he said.

“But I feel for Thumper (Scott).

“He has worked hard all year and probably deserves a shot but in saying that so do the boys who have played the last month.”

Taumalolo believed Scott would still play a huge role for the Cowboys as they look to upset runaway favourites the Storm and clinch a second premiership.

“For the guys who haven’t played a grand final before he will calm their nerves and just relax them,” he said.

“He will play his part off the field to help the boys on the field.”

Green said he called the press conference in a bid to “clear the air” after reports Corey Jensen would be replaced in the grand final 17 by Scott.

“Some of the comments last week were blown out of proportion (about Scott),” Green said.

“I think it is important that people don’t perceive that Matt was suggesting he take the place of someone in the 17 who have done the job for us so far.

“With that in mind if nothing happens injury-wise this week the same 17 will play on Sunday.”

Ko’s major rival trending upwards In one fell swoop, Brooke Henderson engineered the finest moment of her golfing career – and doomed Lydia Ko to the sourest of hers.

Tied at six-under par after four rounds of last year’s Women’s PGA Championship major in Washington, Henderson and Kiwi superstar Ko – then world No.1, and an irresistible golfing force – went to a sudden-death playoff.

Yet, within one par-four hole, it was all over.

Both golfers hit the green with their approach shots, only for Canadian young gun Henderson to sink her putt and the equally precocious Ko to miss.

Aged just 18, Henderson had secured her first LPGA major.

“A dream come true, it really was,” Henderson said.

“It was amazing, that Sunday, everything just seemed to go perfectly for me.

“Minus six in the final round of a major, bogey free, was really cool.

“To go into the playoff with her, at first I was pretty nervous, but I kind of talked myself up and realised this was such a special opportunity – that you can go and play one hole and hoist a major championship trophy.”

From that point in June 2016, the careers of both Henderson and Ko – who are good friends off the fairway – have been something of a rollercoaster.

Ko has not won a LPGA tour event for more than 12 months, tumbling to eighth in the women’s rankings, while Henderson has fallen to 12th.

Yet the 20-year-old felt her form was on an upward trend, as she prepares to rival Ko for this week’s New Zealand Women’s Open title in Auckland.

Sport Giggs’ record broken Gareth Barry’s big night may have ended in disappointment but the congratulations still poured in for the Premier League’s new record appearance holder. West Brom midfielder Barry made his 633rd appearance in the 2-0 loss at Arsenal yesterday, surpassing the previous mark set by Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs. It was a typically unfussy performance from the 36-year-old Barry, who had wanted little fanfare surrounding his achievement, although in a nice touch Baggies boss Tony Pulis named him captain for the night.

A Mid Canterbury softballer has his sights set on knocking the Australian competition out of the park this time next week.

Kotiti Patea has been selected to play in the New Zealand under 15 boys’ side at the Softball New South Wales under 17 Blue Blaze tournament to be held in Syd-

ney, and flies out on Thursday.

“I was quite shocked when I found out, I wasn’t really expecting it,” he said.

The side was selected from the South Island under 15 tournament which was held in Dunedin in January.

Having played since he was five or six, starting out with slow pitch at Netherby School, Patea

has progressed to playing in the local Saturday competition.

“I like just being able to play with my friends, and the competitiveness of it,” he said.

“I haven’t really thought about it but I guess making the men’s team is a goal.”

The tournament will consist of training and warm-up games, followed by a two-day tourna-

ment on the Wednesday and Thursday.

Patea leaves early on Thursday, and will be gone for nine days.

“It is so early on Thursday,” he said.

“It is a bit exciting now, it got a bit more real when the kit turned up and seeing my name on the Facebook page and stuff.”
