Burgled houses, smashed car windows and vandalised properties in Mid Canterbury have become a common sight on social media.

Now complaints about growing criminal activity in Ashburton are being validated by police statistics.

The stats released to the Guardian under the Official Information Act show a large rise in the number of burglaries over the past few years.

Over the year ending in June, 2016, the

number of burglaries increased by 25 per cent, from 297 in 2014/15, to 370.

However, burglaries involving vehicles have decreased to 96 (2015/16) from 105 in the 2014/15 year.

Police attendance, however, stayed the same, with 71 officers attending burglaries in both years and a slight increase from 11 to 13 officers attending theft involving cars.

Dr Gavin Knight, chief data scientist at New Zealand Police, said the true number of police attendances was likely to be higher because the stats only represented

when an officer said they arrived, or a forensic scene examination occurred.

Ashburton police Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield said recent policy changes were putting pressure on staff to attend more events. “Yes there has been a significant jump in reported burglaries in Mid Canterbury and also in theft ex car offending and, yes, the new policy has put extra pressure on the thin blue line here in Ashburton,” he said.

New technology for Tinwald School

With the help of technology, parents are in the know when it comes to their child’s learning.

Tinwald School, like many across New Zealand, incorporated Seesaw – an app that documents the student’s work and functions as an online portfolio – at the start of term two to function their day-to-day study.

Each student has a profile on the app which can be accessed on mobile devices, via scanning a QR code, by the student, teacher and parents to view the student’s progression and the work they had done each day.

Tinwald School Year Three and Four teacher Catherin Mackenzie said the new system was used throughout the school and it was a good way for parents to see what

their child worked on.

“The parents raved about [Seesaw] because they know what was going on in the classroom.”

The app allowed children to complete their work on their mobile device along with a recording in which the child explained how they had solved their problem, Mackenzie said.

She said it was “easy” to incorporate into the classroom and was a better way for parents to see how their child progressed week by week rather than receiving a portfolio book at the end of the term.

Mackenzie said apart from some assessments it was up to the students to decide how much they used it.

Farm security to deter cruelty

On-farm security cameras could become the norm to deter animal cruelty and stock thefts, a Mid Canterbury dairy industry spokesperson says.

Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury dairy industry group chairman Nathan Currie has added his voice to widespread condemnation of fresh footage showing the cruel treatment of bobby calves.

Animal rights watchdog Farmwatch recorded workers on hidden cameras at 10 dairy farms in Waikato and Taranaki in August.

The resulting footage showed farm and transport company workers dragging and manhandling bobby calves as they were loaded on trucks to be sent to slaughter on nine of those farms.

Tuesday’s revelations came on the back of similar disclosures by Farmwatch, involving bobby calf cruelty at a pet food processing plant last year, which resulted in

prosecutions and law changes last year.

“We are extremely disappointed to see this happening again, I can understand why people are upset, we all are,” Currie said.

Practices for loading bobby calves onto trucks differs in Mid Canterbury. The calves are lifted onto raised platforms enabling them to walk onto the truck, Currie said.

“The calves aren’t lifted out of a pen and thrown into the back of a truck. What I saw (on the video) was very old school.

“I doubt any South Island transport companies would pick calves up under those circumstance.”

On the Currie’s Methven farm strict protocols are in place for handling calves.

“Only my wife and I load the bobby calf truck,” he said.

“We are trying very hard across the industry to clean up our act. It damages our international reputation – if we want to achieve top

prices for our products we need to show best practice at all times.”

Currie said on-farm CTV cameras could deter behaviour such as that shown in the Farmwatch videos and stock thefts.

“As time moves on that will be the line we have to head down to prove best practice in handling calves, but in tight times like this investing in that sort of infrastructure is not on cards.”

Farmwatch spokesperson John Darroch said cameras should be installed on all trucks transporting calves.

We believe that as a result of what we have uncovered cameras need to be installed on all trucks picking up calves. “Because we are a volunteer organisation our capacity to carry out investigations is limited and we do not claim to have surveyed all dairy producing regions, Darroch said.

“However what we have found is that the abuse of calves is not limited to a few bad apples. Given that MPI and the industry have

not carried out any pro-active investigations we have no way of knowing what the true scale of this abuse is.

“We also support the SPCA’s suggested welfare reforms and are disappointed these were not adopted after last year’s investigation.” DairyNZ chief executive Tim Mackle says cruel and illegal practices are not in any way condoned or accepted by the industry as part of dairy farming.

“The vast majority of farmers care about their animals and we are committed to farming to very high standards,” Mackle said in a statement.

“DairyNZ works closely with the wider industry in the management of bobby calves, including the transport sector, meat processors and dairy companies, as well as Federated Farmers and MPI.” New regulations coming into effect in August 2017 will require farmers to have loading platforms.

Hot pools big dollar earner

Methven’s hot pools complex that could rewrite the ski village’s economy, are anticipated to be built and receiving their first visitors within 15 months.

The complex is likely to cost between $7 million and $10 million and board member David Dynes says working drawings will be completed and the project put out for tender early next year.

“We have a few bridges to cross before then but if all goes according to plan it’ll be up and running by the end of next year,” he said.

The Methven Hot Pools Holding Ltd project has been on the drawing board since 2010 and for the small group of around 40 local investors it was immensely satisfying to have reached a point where it was close to becoming a reality, Dynes said.

Over that time the project had been through a number of incarnations, he said and at one stage was intended to be built in stages. Shareholders had now decided to build the complex as one project, he said.

“We need to build it once so we don’t need to go back. It will

open with all three offerings – a family area, adults only and private pools plus spa treatment areas. It’ll open with everything in place.”

While the mechanics around how the pools would be run had yet to be decided, it was likely there would be a chief executive appointed who would be answerable to a board. That person would then employ appropriate staff, Dynes said.

Over the past few weeks the hot pools board had been working with neighbours of the Racecourse Road site, answering questions and ensuring any concerns and questions about the project were answered.

“We need to be absolutely sure they’re comfortable with what’s going on,” he said.

The pools would be a significant dollar earner for the Methven community, with accommodation and food businesses the big winners.

“If you put this with Mt Hutt and its $299 season pass deal the two will bring a lot of money into the district; the multiplier factor is amazing.”

A resource consent for the project was lodged in April.

Chch man’s close call at Dreamworld A Christchurch man has told of his close call with the ill-fated Dreamworld ride after his group let the victims go ahead of them minutes before the four were killed.

Two women and two men died after an accident on the Thunder River Rapids ride at the Australian theme park yesterday afternoon.

The 25-year-old Christchurch man told Newshub he and his partner were about to get in the raft involved in the accident on the Gold Coast, but let the other group in front go first.

He said they were waiting for his partner’s mother to catch up with them for one final ride of the day.

The man was still too upset over the tragedy to be named.

“We saw things we wished we hadn’t,” he told Newshub.

When the accident happened, his group was in another raft but they managed to climb out while it was on the conveyor belt.

No one alerted them to the horrific scenes unfolding so they made the decision to get themselves out, he said.

The man said he was “counting his lucky stars” despite being traumatised by the deaths.

His mother told Newshub the couple would never go to another theme park.

New council team in business

For Ashburton’s newly elected team of civic leaders, the celebrating is over and the serious business of running the Ashburton District has begun.

Yesterday Ashburton mayor Donna Favel was sworn in to office by chief executive Andrew Dalziel and was presented with the official chains of office. Her team of 12 councillors then made their declarations to serve the district to the best of their ability over the next three years.

As part of their declaration the

councillors and mayor promised to “faithfully and impartially” to the best of their “skill and judgement”, perform their duties in the best interests of the district.

Favel said she was honoured to serve the district as its mayor.

Looking around the table, she said she believed she had a good team to work with. “Now is the time to put aside our differences and work together to find common ground to move forward.

Our goal is to make the right decisions in the interests of the Ashburton District for years to come,” she said.

With a large number of firsttime councillors, the team knew it had a lot to learn over the coming months, Favel said.

As part of the inauguration of the new council team, Dalziel highlighted the statutory requirements elected members must work within, including issues around pecuniary interest, conflicts of interest, privacy issues, accepting or soliciting gifts, rewards or offering bribes and personal liability.

The new council will officially hold its first meeting of the new term on November 24.

“The calls for service continue to climb this time of year so again I say we as a policing team will be prioritising our responses to calls for service in Mid Canterbury,” senior sergeant Banfield said.

Earlier this year the Guardian reported the Ashburton Police force was operating at less than half the governments recommended ratio of one officer to 500 people.

In Ashburton the number of police to people is about one to 1200.

Over the Labour weekend members of the Facebook group Ashburton Notice Board were alerted to more crime.

Janet and Craig Hadley returned home from a weekend away to find their mailbox had been damaged.

The couple made a post and a number of other Allenton residents said they also had their mailboxes damaged.

Hadley said she didn’t want to make a big deal out of the situation, but she did want to remind people their actions have consequences.

The post wasn’t about calling anyone out but she wanted to say someone’s minute or two of fun can have lasting effects on the victim.

Because the Hadleys didn’t have a mailbox anymore, mail about hospital appointments for her father, who has cancer, were unable to be delivered.

Enhancing Rakaia walkway

The Rakaia community is pitching together to create a village meadow of colourful wild flowers that will be part of the new Rakaia walkway.

The area was once an untidy mess of broom, gorse and blackberry, but volunteers have cleared it and laid topsoil in preparation for the planting of several themed gardens.

Organiser Neil Pluck said the project was originally to create a village green, but the broom, gorse and black berry were fearsome weeds and would re-establish before grass could grow.

The 1.8ha area had been sprayed twice and the wild flowers would be sowed in the next month or so, meaning summer visitors to Rakaia would experience a riot of colour as they walked the track. A 300m track able to be used by walkers, parents with pushchairs and cyclists, would run from the northeastern corner of the Rakaia School grounds, undulating over the terrace domain and link up to the walkway in the vicinity of the resource recovery park.

Pluck said it would be a nice short walk for people stopping at Salmon Tales or the tea rooms on State Highway 1. The themed gardens will contain mostly natives and the community will erect a platform with views to the

Paddle boats coming Ashburton’s Lake Hood will have a some new vessels on the water this summer with the launch of a fleet of paddle boats for hire. The boat hire service will be part of the expanded offerings from The Lake House. Owner Vanetia Bingham says she’s testing the water with two paddle boats, but if they’re successful the numbers will grow.

The boats will be restricted to the area in front of The Lake House and that will ensure parents are able to sit back and relax while watching their youngsters on the water, Bingham said. The boats are likely to be on the water next month.

The meadow is a two-year project and Pluck said it had been helped immensely by community volunteers giving their time and resources to make it happen.

Dozens of people around town were propagating natives as around 2500 plants would be needed; local businesses had

given soil and shingle and people on court-ordered community work sentences had spent part of a weekend on the end of shovels moving it.

The 4200 wild flowers to be planted would give four months of colour and grow up to a metre. They would be mowed after summer and self-seeding

for the following year.

Pluck said the community workers had kicked off the first garden recently, shovelling shingle onto 750 square metres of weed mat. The weed mat was essential to keep the gorse, broom and blackberry at bay and the stones would eventually be covered with groundcover plants.

Greymouth motorcycle club says thanks The Greymouth Motorcycle Street Racing Committee today said “thank you” to those who helped during the fatal crash on Sunday, and said the club had been overwhelmed by support.

The high-speed crash claimed the life of Nelson rider Guy Lowe, aged in his 50s.

Mr Lowe was competing in the Bears class in the first race of the day when he crashed in Herbert Street shortly before 11am.

He died in the ambulance on the way to hospital.

In a statement released yesterday, the organising committee said it had been in contact with Mr Lowe’s family and friends, who described him as an ardent motorcycle enthusiast with a great love of the sport.

The organisers thanked the “brave men and women of the St John ambulance, the Fire Service and the police for their

professionalism and support for the Greymouth Motorcycle Street Races”.

The club had been overwhelmed by the support from motorcycle club members from around the country, particularly those present on Sunday who had stepped up and assisted.

Organisers said they also appreciated the large crowd of spectators who stayed on for the afternoon session of racing.

“Riders were consulted prior to racing recommencing, with many voicing their support and wish to honour their fellow racer,” the statement said.

A full round of all classes of motorbikes raced in the afterv noon, setting a new course record of 48.19 seconds.

The club said yesterday it was planning to go ahead with the 2017 races.

The lure of winning big on the pokies appears to be losing its appeal for people in the Ashburton District, with gaming machine figures dropping significantly over the past year. The almost 5 per cent drop saw the district’s gamblers invest $1,482,218 in gaming machines in the September quarter compared to $1,557,208 last year. The amount gambled was also down on the June quarter. There are now 135 gaming machines across 12 venues in the Ashburton District; until The Shed closed there were 13 venues and an additional 18 machines. The September quarter spend equates to almost $45 for every man, woman and child in the district.

Rates climb The average rates bill for properties in the Ashburton District is now $2032, up 32 per cent over the past four years. In its annual report the Ashburton District Council posted details on its financial performance for the year to June 30. The council’s public debt per rateable property has risen 29 per cent over that period from $2446 to $3158, but its total assets and equity have also risen, both by 18 per cent. Over those four years the council’s rate take has risen from $24.021 million to $30.470 million and its total operating expenditure from $48.075 million to $56.231 million. There are 14,995 rateable properties in the district with a total rateable value of $13,144,827,700.

Security issues remain for Allenton School

Allenton School has seen a reduction in vandalism over the past few months but it is still hanging around.

Allenton School principal Graham Smith said the school installed eight security cameras earlier this year and although it had reduced the amount of vandalism done to the school, there were still “trouble makers” who would cause damage.

Smith said he had caught three youths on the school roof and said their actions were endangering themselves.

He said he identified one of the vandals and soon found out who the other ones were.

There had been more than $3700 worth of damage done to the school this year but had massively reduced since the cameras were installed, smith said.

Smith said the school had spent $13-14000 on the cameras and although it was a large cost the cameras would pay for themselves in the future.

The school would remain open for the community to use after school hours and hoped it would not have to be closed off.

“I would be loath to [close it.]

“I would not like to go there.”

Police admit targeting euthanasia campaigners New Zealand Police have admitted targeting pro-euthanasia campaigners in a drink-drive checkpoint.

The move has been branded an “abuse of power” and “deeply un-Kiwi”, and a complaint has reportedly been laid with the Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA).

This afternoon, police confirmed officers had used a breathtesting checkpoint to target people attending an Exit International euthanasia meeting in Lower Hutt earlier this month.

The officers were investigating a suspected self-inflicted death, and reportedly asked the coroner to put its investigation on hold while they carried out a criminal one.

Suicide is not illegal or considered a crime in New Zealand, but assisting or encouraging someone to take their own life is.

The Health Select Committee is currently conducting an inquiry into assisted dying.

Bensemenn said information gathered through the checkpoint had “enabled police to provide support and information, to those people who we had reason to believe may be contemplating suicide”.

Euthanasia was a “very sensitive issue”, he said, but the actions of officers had been “carried out in good faith”.

Barrister Michael Bott said the actions of officers involved in the checkpoint was “an abuse of police power”.

“What they’re doing is using this power as a cloak to undertake surveillance and to stop and ascertain private details and particulars of people attending a public meeting.”

The majority of those attending meeting were pensioners, he said, and would likely have found it “quite frightening and disturbing” to have police officers on their doorsteps following a routine drink-drive check.

Act Party leader David Seymour said the behaviour could be illegal, and was “at best, dodgy”.

“People have the right to meet and discuss issues without fear of

police harassment,” he said.

“The police are given the power to set up checkpoints to combat drink driving, we do not give them powers for one purpose so they can abuse them for another.”

He likened the checkpoint to interrogating peaceful citizens “under false pretences”.

“Human rights lawyers have already raised concerns that it breaches the Human Rights Act. Somebody had to be accountable for the police’s actions, he said.

“If these individuals were responsible then they must be answerable, they cannot hide

behind the usual excuse that it’s `police operations’.

“People expect police resources to focus on real crimes, not to treat members of advocacy groups like gang members.”

A spokeswoman for Police Minister Judith Collins said the case was an operational matter for police, and directed all questions to the force.

The admission from Bensemenn comes just weeks after police raided the homes of elderly women in Wellington and Nelson, sparking accusations of political interference with long-time euthanasia campaigners.

Manslaughter charge laid Key welcomed in New Delhi A Napier woman has been charged with manslaughter five years after the death of Bruce Mouat.

She appeared in the Hastings District Court last week charged with causing the death of Mr Mouat, who was thought to have fallen down steps at his Hawera home on July, 16, 2011.

The 48-year-old Taranaki mountaineer died in Wellington Hospital 11 days later.

Coroner Tim Scott had initially found no evidence which proved there was foul play involved

in his death.

Mr Scott released his report in February 2012, which said he had died from a blunt force head injury after an incident at his home after a night of heavy drinking.

“Police investigated Mr Mouat’s death at the time on the basis that it may have been a homicide,” Mr Scott said in February 2012.

The Napier woman has been granted bail and interim name suppression and will appear in the High Court at New Plymouth next month.

Prime Minister John Key has been given a spectacular official welcome in New Delhi by his counterpart Narendra Modi.

Key’s limousine arrived flanked by rows of thoroughbred horses, with riders in white military uniforms, gold and blue turbans and holding flagged lances straight upward.

Security was tight at the event, with media not allowed to take cellphones inside the Rashtrapai Bhavan (President’s House) and bags and gear swiped for explosive residue.

A band played God Defend New Zealand, and Key was marched down 50 metres of red carpet to inspect a military guard standing next to gold cannons.

Key said he recognised India had issues it wanted to raise.

Yesterday Key said securing a quality FTA would take time.

Dropping steep agricultural tariffs would be extremely controversial in India, the world’s largest producer and consumer of milk with millions of small-scale farmers.

Key said farmers need not fear a trade deal.

New Zealand was pursuing trade deals like the one with India because “we don’t want to have all our eggs in the Chinese market”, Key said.

Electronic monitors often removed New figures show that almost 250 offenders removed their electronically monitored trackers during the 2015/16 year.

Most absconders were on home detention, and 15 were still being sought by police.

The Department of Corrections annual report, released on Friday, revealed that in the 10 months from August 2015 to June this year, 13,499 people were placed on electronic monitoring.

As at June 30 this year, 4011 offenders and alleged offenders remained on electronic monitoring.

The report shows that as of June 30, 15 offenders in total were still being sought by police.

Corrections said that in the 2015/16 year, 97.1 per cent of offenders did not remove their trackers.

Of those who did remove their trackers and abscond, only 13.5 per cent were convicted of a new offence committed during their electronic monitoring sentence or bail.

Corrections national Commissioner Jeremy Lightfoot said the department could not provide figures for previous years for a comparison because until mid-2015 the information “was not centrally collated”.

“Notwithstanding the marginal level of non-compliance (tracker removal) with the conditions associated with EM, the performance results demonstrate that the use of EM is an effective alternative to more costly custodial sentences,” the Corrections report stated.

“If it was not for these sentences and bail options, as many as half of those electronically tracked would be on a custodial sentence.

Electronic monitoring allows individuals either convicted of a crime and sentenced, released

on bail or released from prison under conditions to be tracked in their homes and in the community.

Trackers are attached to an offender’s ankle on a strap, allowing Corrections to monitor them and ensure they adhere to any set curfew and keep away from any areas specified in their release conditions.

Man arrested A man has been arrested and charged after he allegedly attacked a woman and threatened her with a knife in Auckland yesterday. The victim was walking to work along Mt Albert Rd when the violent assault took place.

The 31-year-old man is expected to appear before the Auckland District Court facing charges including abduction, assault with a weapon, sexual violation and robbery. Detective Senior Sergeant Glenn Baldwin said the attack was a traumatic experience for the woman. “He was apprehended soon after the attack which has provided the victim with some comfort.”

Dreamworld remains closed Dreamworld remained closed yesterday while police examine how four people, including a New Zealander, were killed on a 30-year-old water raft ride at the Gold Coast theme park.

Brother and sister Luke Dorsett, 35, and Kate Goodchild, 32, and Canberra man Roozi Araghi died in the catastrophic accident.

The three and another woman, a New Zealander, were victims of a conveyor belt malfunction at the Gold Coast park when their raft flipped on the Thunder River Rapids ride on Tuesday afternoon.

Two were thrown clear of the ride while the other two were stuck in the ride itself.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said Queensland Police had told it one of the victims was a New Zealander.

A spokesman said she was understood to be a long-term resident of Australia.

The NZ Herald named her as 42-year-old mother of two Cindy Low. It says the Sydney resident was on holiday with her husband and children.

The mother of Dorsett and Goodchild has told the Courier Mail the accident has devastated her family.

“I have three children and have lost two of them today - my whole family has been wiped out,” Kim Dorsett told the Courier Mail.

Schumer parody slammed

The site of yesterdays’ Thunder Water Rapids accident.

Goodchild had two daughters, aged eight months and 12 years. Dorsett said the oldest girl was blaming herself.

“She has had a truly terrible day, she is going through unimaginable pain at the moment,” Dorsett said.

“I’m at a loss as to how to deal with this now - I woke up this morning with three children and tomorrow I am only going to have one left.”

Dreamworld visitors described the chaos after the accident at 2.20pm.

“It all happened so fast.

One minute we were just about to get on the ride and

the next there was this little girl screaming and we were just trying to comfort her,” Lia Capes told the Courier Mail.

Several parkgoers claimed the ride had broken down at least twice earlier in the day and police said those claims would form part of the investigation.

Queensland Ambulance senior operating officer Gavin Fuller said on Tuesday the victims suffered fatal injuries and couldn’t be revived despite several crews attending the scene.

A coronial investigation into the cause of the accident and

the deaths is underway, with workplace health and safety officers and police forensic crash investigators also involved.

Dreamworld released a statement on Tuesday night saying “the entire Dreamworld team is devastated and shocked by this incident.”

The Thunder River Rapids Ride is currently Australia’s only river rapids ride and opened in December 1986.

Dreamworld’s Rocky Hollow Log Ride was shut down in April this year when a man fell from the ride and nearly drowned.

Most unaware of dementia lifestyle link Most people are unaware of all the lifestyle factors which can increase the risk of dementia, a survey has found.

With no known cure, there is increasing evidence that steps can be taken to try to reduce a person’s risk of a dementia as experts warn it is “not an inevitable part of ageing”.

Findings from a survey commissioned by Public Health England reveal just 2 per cent of those surveyed are able to correctly identify all the potentially changeable factors which

can increase the risk of dementia.

These factors include and relate to alcohol consumption, smoking, high blood pressure, depression, diabetes and low exercise levels.

The figures, part of the 2015 British Social Attitudes survey, found “the lowest levels of knowledge exist in relation to high blood pressure and diabetes” - with just 15 per cent realising high blood pressure increases the chance of getting dementia.

Meanwhile, just 14 per cent of people know that those with diabetes are more likely to get dementia.

While 27 per cent of the 2,176 survey respondents incorrectly believed there is nothing anyone can do to reduce their risks of getting the condition, a further 28 per cent were also unable to correctly identify any potentially modifiable risk factors.

With growing evidence that as many as a third of dementia cases could be a result of con-

trollable factors, Dr Charles Alessi, senior dementia advisor at PHE, said: “Dementia is not an inevitable part of ageing.

“What’s good for the heart is good for the brain and simple steps like giving up smoking, reducing alcohol intake, losing weight and taking regular exercise can reduce your risk of developing dementia in the future.

“In the absence of a cure for dementia, prevention is the best means we have to reduce its impact on the public.” -AAP

Amy Schumer is brushing off critics who say her parody of Beyonce’s Formation video is racially insensitive. The video features a sweaty Schumer dancing to the song alongside Goldie Hawn, Wanda Sykes and Joan Cusack. Beyonce’s version of the clip showed the singer sitting atop a New Orleans police car sinking in floodwaters. It also includes images of a hooded black child facing police and graffiti scrawled on a wall that reads Stop Shooting Us. Schumer responded on Instagram, thanking streaming music service Tidal for releasing what she calls a “tribute.”

Actor opposes pipeline Actor-activist Mark Ruffalo has travelled to North Dakota to support the Standing Rock Sioux tribe’s opposition to the four-state Dakota Access oil pipeline.

Ruffalo is co-founder of The Solutions Project, which promotes clean and renewable energy. He says he plans to deliver a pair of Navajo-made solar trailers on Wednesday to help power the encampments established to protest the pipeline. The Standing Rock Sioux and other tribes and environmental groups say that the pipeline could threaten water supplies for millions, since it will cross the Missouri River, as well as harm sacred sites and artefacts. Ruffalo is one of the movie industry’s most outspoken advocates for environmental causes.

20 years for rape and murder of student Sophie Collombet’s killer will spend at least 20 years behind bars for brutally raping the French student and leaving her for dead in a Brisbane park.

Benjamin James Milward, 28, was high on ice when he grabbed Collombet on the night of March 27, 2014.

Milward can’t remember what exactly happened but Collombet’s injuries suggest she was dragged along the ground and hit in the head multiple times.

The self-described sex addict raped the 21-year-old before leaving her on a bench covered only by a jacket and newspaper.

He then threw her possessions in the Brisbane River and fled the state.

The Brisbane Supreme Court heard yesterday Milward told Collombet he would get help but never did.

The university business student was alive for several hours after the assault and died from extensive injuries to her head.

Passers-by thought she was a

sleeping homeless person and did not call for help.

It was a rough sleeper who finally called paramedics, but it was too late.

Milward confessed to police when he was tracked down in NSW’ Coffs Harbour 10 days after the attack.

He pleaded guilty earlier this month to rape and murder but the court heard he had never intended to kill Collombet.

In sentencing Milward, Justice Ann Lyons condemned his attack on a defenceless woman.

Milward was sentenced to life in prison with a non-parole period of 20 years.

Collombet’s family, who flew in from France to be in court, spoke of their endless grief at the loss of their daughter, sister and girlfriend.

Her brothers Guillaume and Lionel read a collective victim impact statement in court describing their constant pain.

The family refused to acknowledge Milward as he apologised while being led from the dock.

Court records in Los Angeles show that writer and director Len Wiseman filed for divorce on Friday, citing irreconcilable differences. The pair married in May 2004 and have no children together. Beckinsale stars in the upcoming film Underworld: Blood Wars, which Wiseman helped write and produce. Wiseman directed Beckinsale in the first Underworld movie, which was released in 2003.

Mid Canty police low on staff, it’s as simple as that Michelle Nelson CHIEF REPORTER

T

here’s no doubt burglaries, vandalism and petty crime is on the rise in Mid Canterbury – a fact now confirmed by fresh crime statistics.

A 25 per cent hike in burglaries in the year ending June, 2015, over the same period to June, 2016, is significant.

The fact police attendance remained constant, with 71 officers attending reported burglaries in both years, will not go unnoticed.

It’s easy to see why the victims of such offending rail against the police force, but consider the position officers at the Ashburton station are in.

The population in Mid Canterbury continues to rise, alongside the number of criminal offences committed.

But there is no equivalent rise in police numbers.

The Ashburton station is understaffed. According to the national guidelines, the National Government has not kept pace with its own “modest” goal of one officer per 500 people, here or anywhere else in the country.

Taking into account all sworn officers, including sergeants, detectives and dedicated education, youth and highway patrol officers on top of uniformed constables, that figure rises to around 1200 people per officer in Mid Canterbury.

And the plight of our police force is compounded by the size of the district. Officers can be called to respond to incidents from Rakaia in the north, to Ealing in the south, from the Ashburton Lakes in the west to the coast.

Police simply don’t have the resources to deal with all reported cases of crime.

Those who doubt this should take a seat in the public gallery of the Ashburton Courthouse on a court list day.

It will soon become evident what police have been doing in the preceding weeks – and the amount of work required to get an offender in the dock.

So, instead of taking to social media to take a pot shot at our hard-working officers, write a letter to your Member of Parliament, petition government and take a long, hard look at a political party’s policies before ticking the box in next year’s elections.

sion that the transformational growth steps would involve going offshore and primarily stick with a brand that we were familiar with, the franchisor we were familiar with and also where they were a very strong brand so we don’t have to try and invest lots of time and effort in establishing a new brand in a new territory.”

The company is offering its shareholders one new share at $4.70 apiece for every 5.15 shares they already own. That’s a 12.5 per

cent discount to $5.37, the dividend-adjusted volume-weighted average price of the shares for the five trading days prior to Oct. 26.

Restaurant Brands today posted a 0.7 per cent gain in first-half profit to $13.5 million for the 28 weeks to September 12. Sales jumped 22 per cent to $256.2 million, with the bulk of the increase coming from its acquisition on April 27 of QSR in Australia, the biggest KFC franchisee in NSW, which added $43.6 million of sales.

Pumpkin Patch in receivership Children’s clothing retailer Pumpkin Patch has been tipped into receivership by its lenders and appointed voluntary administrators after failing to reinvent itself in the face of shrinking sales and too much debt.

Auckland-based Pumpkin Patch’s board appointed McGrathNicol’s Andrew Grenfell and Conor McElhinney as administrators and said it understood KordaMentha’s Neale Jackson and Brendon Gibson had been named receivers.

Last week the retailer said there was virtually no value left in its equity after talks with its lender ANZ Bank New Zealand fell through.

“Despite considerable efforts by the board and its management team, it has become evident that no solution is available to the company, at this time, to

address the current over-leveraged and significantly capital constrained position,” chairman Peter Schuyt and managing director Luke Bunt said in a statement.

“With no likely solution available, the board believes that the constraints currently experienced by the business are too great and the only appropriate action to best protect the interests of stakeholders is to appoint administrators.”

In its full-year results pub-

lished last month, Pumpkin Patch told investors its directors had given an undertaking to the bank that it would put forward proposals by Oct. 20, which was later pushed out to Oct. 31.

The capital constraints were highlighted in the accounts as a “material risk” to the ongoing viability of the business.

Pumpkin Patch’s debt to ANZ Bank rose to $46 million from $39.1 million in the year to the end of July 2016. It posted a loss of $15.5 million in the same period.

The retailer’s board today said it was committed to working with the administrators and receivers to get “the best possible outcome for the company and staff”.

The shares have been in a trading halt since October 21, and last traded at 6 cents, valuing the retailer at $10.1 million.

It’s easy doing business here New Zealand has been ranked the easiest country in the world for doing business in the World Bank’s 2017 Doing Business report, getting kudos for tax changes that dropped cheque duties and lowered Accident Compensation Corp levies.

The country replaced Singapore as the top nation in the report that examines regulations that help or hinder business activity across 190 nations. The report’s authors said the abolition of cheque duties made paying

Restaurant Brands NZ plans to buy Pacific Island Restaurants, the largest fast food operator in Hawaii with 82 Taco Bell and Pizza Hut stores, to diversify its earnings away from New Zealand where it runs the KFC, Pizza Hut, Starbucks Coffee and Carl’s Jr food chains.

The Auckland-based company has offered $US105 million for PIR, funded by a $94 million sale of shares to existing holders and $US42 million of debt, it said in a statement. It expects to complete the sale by late December, conditional on approval from Yum! Brands, which is the franchisor for PIR’s Taco Bell and Pizza Hut stores and Restaurant Brands’ existing KFC and Pizza Hut operations.

Gearing Planning, knowledge up for for irrigation efficiency CROPS

Low groundwater levels and surface water restrictions forecast this summer mean farmers need to know their irrigation systems inside out, says Irrigation NZ’s Steve Breneger.

And the best starting point is knowing how much water is being applied.

Breneger said good management practices and water efficiencies would be key this summer and it is a message Irrigation NZ and Environment Canterbury has been spreading at five workshops around the region over the past month.

Breneger said between 15-25 people turned up to each workshop and participants were a mix of farmers and industry personnel.

He said most people were on a journey towards more efficient water use and how they could best achieve that with their existing irrigation systems. “Changing systems takes huge capital, but sooner or later it may be that is what is needed.”

The take-home message was know your system, understand its constraints, but most of all know how much water is being used.

“Measuring how much water you use is important as most farmers have seasonal allocations. They need to know how much water they are applying – there’s no point getting to Christmas and finding you have used all your water.”

Breneger said 25-40 buckets were placed under an irrigator to catch water and the amount then analysed; the test can be done under guns, rotorainers, centre pivots and K-lines. “It is very simple.

Irrigation NZ is about to release an easy-to-use app that analyses

the results for farmers.

The idea is that when 10-15 farmers in an area have been tested, the farmers attend a group event where Breneger talks them through how they can achieve efficiencies.

Despite the drier-than-normal soil moisture and low groundwater levels, the atmosphere was not too grim at the workshops, he said.

“We are offering them a way forward. They can plan their irrigation better and know where their system can improve.”

The Foundation for Arable Research will hold its major field day CROPS 2016 at its Chertsey trial site on December 7.

The day will feature a dozen speakers covering a range of subjects relevant to cropping in Canterbury and is expected, as usual, to draw a big crowd.

This year’s international guest speaker is Nicole Anderson, from Oregon State University. She will discuss issues around seed production in Oregon, drawing links to the New Zealand industry.

Other speakers will cover topics ranging from pollination options to precision agriculture in potatoes.

Seven sponsors will take up demonstration plots and many others will have material on show.

As in previous years, each of the 12 talks will be repeated morning and afternoon, lunch will be provided and there will be a dinner at the end of the day.

Since its inception in 2002, CROPS has developed into FAR’s key field event and a must-do for cropping farmers and industry personnel. Over 600 people attended CROPS in 2014, making it New Zealand’s largest one-day agricultural extension field event.

www.guardianonline.co.nz Ashburton Bowling Club Congrats to winners of Ladies Ch 4’s Diane Gutberlet, Diana King, Gaynor Crack and Gillian Kelly who beat Gladys Body, Ursula Crack, Lois Connell and Kath Muir on October 25. Congrats to Noeline Woods, Judy Ryk and Ollie Collins who have been picked as reps in the Town V Country game.

The 5’s have travelled to Christchurch and had mixed results. Ashburton 1 had 1 win and 1 draw V Woolston and Ashburton 2 playing against Barrington United had 1 win and 1 loss.

In the district games Ashburton players have featured. At Methven gaining 2nd place was Chas Leech, Jo Ryk, Heather Goodall and Leonie Spargo.

3rd was Gavin Eder, Mike Quinn, Murray Anderson and Margaret Eder.

Members are reminded to enter their names on the main Board for the Quaich to be played this Sat at 1 30.

Note the later starting time. Friday Triples were shortened to 2 games due to the wet weather October 14.

The 2 greens were full and players most grateful for the chance to come inside and get warm. Better luck for the next game due this week. After the Quaich the first Corner to Corner game will be played, weather permitting, and then every Saturday after that.

To those not well or convalescing we wish you all a speedy recovery and may you be on the greens again soon.

Ashburton Electronic Organ and Keyboards Club Don Hopwood played some lovely music to greet us as we arrived this evening. Janet Smith welcomed us all and announced some coming events: November 6th Bands in the Park. Nov 30th Afternoon at May Birkett’s. 1.30.

Irene Williams hosted this evening and announced the first entertainer: May Birkett on keyboard played; Summer in Venice, and Everybody loves somebody sometime. Beautiful music.

Next was Betty Flay on piano a lovely medley of old favourites; Hello Hello whose your Lady Friend, Blue Smoke, It’s a Long Way to Tipparery. A great singalong. Janet Smith on keyboard played I Have a Dream and Quartermaster’s Store, which she told us her husband George used to sing (with different words) Well done Janet.

The Raffles were drawn: 1st; Don Hopwood 2nd; Jackie Chmiel 3rd; Teresa O’Connell 4th; Margaret Twamley.

It is “Oh, so easy” to dig oneself into a large bottomless pit! Here is a gem from a recent club night. Dealer, North passes, any East playing weak 2s will open 2 Spades, possibly, because of distribution, even upgrade to open 1 Spade. South can now employ the unusual 2N.T. showing both the miners. West, with the most points of all four hands will show his Heart suit if East has opened 1 Spade. Should West pass the 2N.T. bid, North’s bid is 3 Clubs, and East, having a void may show the Spades again. However the many bidding scenarios play out, the auction will be vigorous and whoever wins is in trouble.

In the instance where North passed and East declined to show the Spades, South opened 1 Diamond, an overall of 1 Heart from West, 1N.T. from North showing Heart cover and East leapt to 4 Hearts. North was all set to double 4 Hearts for penalties when South competed with 5 Clubs. West doubled, and North, thinking to avert the crisis, bid 5 Diamonds, also doubled and the drama unfolded.

West’s opening lead of the Club K instantly revealed the bad break, the Club A and 7 followed, the 7 ruffed

by East, who then cashed the Spade A, K & Q. South ruffed the Q, over ruffed by West, who then led the Club 10, ruffed with dummy’s Diamond 10.

Ashburton Garden Club 32 members attended the September 15 meeting held at the Ashburton Senior Centre. The guest speaker was Pamela Whiteford from the Herb Society. She spoke of the 4 most used Herbs, their benefits, their nutritional values, cultivation and ease of growing in dry conditions.

She also referred to the uses from the Roman times to later Centuries.

Speaker was Sharon Breakwell who spoke about the tremendous work being done at Wastebusters with regard to recycling many items which would otherwise end up in the landfill.

This enterprise is thriving owing to public support and it was interesting to learn how plastic wrapping, polystyrene packaging etc is sent away to

be made into other products.

Another aspect of this is to educate the young ones and encourage them to think about how to dispose of rubbish carefully and to teach them that much of this can be recycled.

Our final meeting for the year will be a ‘Bring A Friend’ social evening and pot luck tea, on November 28 at 6pm. We look forward to seeing you all there.

Ashburton Pakeke Lions Club President Peter O’Neill welcomed 67 members and partners to the October meeting.

Following last month’s trial at the MSA Restaurant, the Board made the decision to move from Hotel Ashburton for the monthly Dinner Meeting.

Lion Ken Smith has been given the Privileged Member status in recognition of his long service to the club as he now finds it difficult to attend meetings due to declining health.

Lion Joe reported that Pakeke Lions would be providing a BBQ from 11am to 4pm at the Open Day in the Domain for the Rock Carving Symposium and the Projects Committee would be meeting on 31 October to discuss possible future projects.

Members visiting the Temuka Pakeke Club would now be travelling by car.

More sellers are required for the Christmas Raffle particularly at the Ashburton A&P Show.

Zone Chairman Lion Jan Stonyer asked all members to sign the centennial flag which would eventually be taken to the 2017 World Convention when the Centennial of Lionism

would be celebrated.

The International President is encouraging all Lions Clubs to celebrate the centennial by giving their communities a memorable and lasting gift.

Delightful entertainment was provided by 13-year-old Sammie Mackle, a promising country singer accompanied by well-known local guitarist, Bruce Hill.

She was thanked by Rona Evans and presented with a certificate of appreciation.

President Peter with a family story, Lion Ron with his own brand of Tail Twisting and the National Anthem completed the evening.

Twenty-five women were present at the meeting.

Margaret Williamson was pleased with the number of entries promised for the A and P Show.

More discussion came up about the Pop up Shop to be held in town November 14-19.

The AGM for the Canterbury Creative Fibre will be held on Saturday November 26 up at Wakari.

Hammers in Heartland XV Three Mid Canterbury players have been selected to the Nez Zealand Heartland XV squad.

Hooker Jackson Donlan, second five Nete Caucau and wing Maleli Sau will don the Heartland jersey in November.

The 26-man squad sees 11 of the 12 Heartland Provincial Unions represented.

The team has 15 new caps and 12 players will be in action in the Meads Cup and Lochore Cup finals this weekend.

The squad includes 20-yearold winger Te Rangatira Waitokia from Wanganui, who is Mitre 10 Heartland Competition’s top try scorer and James Lash from Buller, who is top points scorer.

South Canterbury’s Barry Matthews and Poverty Bay’s Mutu Ngarimu will coach the team.

Matthews said he expects the Heartland XV to be competitive in their upcoming fixtures.

“We’ve picked the team on form,” he said.

“It doesn’t matter if you are an 18-year-old selected for the first time or a 36-year-old war horse, if they are playing good rugby then we have picked them for the team.”

The Heartland side will kicked off with their annual clash against New Zealand Marist before heading to Fiji, where they will play two matches.

“The games in Fiji will be tough,” said Matthews.

“Fiji loves its rugby and after winning the 7s gold in Rio they will confident heading into these games.”

The New Zealand Heartland XV squad will assemble in Auckland on November 2 ahead of their first match on November 5.

His post-match tirade, attacking both the All Blacks and the New Zealand Herald for a cartoon which appeared in the Weekend Herald depicting him as a clown, has dominated the headlines – over and above the All Blacks astounding record or the Wallabies failings.

“Cheika is livid because the clown craze has finally hit New Zealand. The internet and electric shears are expected to follow soon,” Daily Telegraph rugby columnist Richard Hinds wrote.

A sly dig at their small brother across the ditch, but he made no mistake of pulling the Aussie coach into the insult ring, calling on Cheika to forget the clowns, and win some rugby.

“Cheika made his fortune in the rag trade peddling upmarket frocks. To him a Wallabies jersey remains the Prada of sporting apparel. Something to be admired even as the All Blacks wipe their muddy boots on it.

“The Wallabies coach seems a man of conviction. But the cynical might suggest Bozogate provided a convenient distraction from another thumping defeat.

“Most eyes were closely examining a cartoonist’s scribblings rather than the gaping holes in the right side of the Wallabies defence.

Hinds calls for Cheika to drop the “well-worn tactics” and start focusing on why his side are losing.

“For the Wallabies there is one way to blunten the artists’ pencils. Win the Bledisloe Cup,” he wrote. But such is the gap between the All Blacks and the Wallabies the iPhone2 will have arrived in New Zealand before the trophy changes hands.” - NZME

In brief Drink driving All Whites goalkeeper Jake Gleeson has been charged with drink driving after crashing his car in Portland, Oregon. The Portland Timbers player, 26, is alleged to have called teammate Liam Ridgewell for help after rear-ending another vehicle. The pair then allegedly failed sobriety tests and were taken to the county prison, before receiving bail.

Gleeson has played eight times for New Zealand since his 2011 debut and has played for the MLS club since 2010. His side had been ruled out of the MLS playoffs the night before the incident. Their cases are scheduled for November 16 at a Lake Oswego municipal court.

Former Mystics’ star Kayla Cullen will headline the new ANZ Premiership side the Northern Stars.

Northern Stars revealed The make-up of the country’s newest sporting franchise has finally been revealed.

Netball New Zealand today unveiled the sixth team to compete in the new domestic league - the freshly minted ANZ Premiership - will be the South Auckland based Northern Stars.

The Stars, who are funded by the national body but governed independently, are headlined by Silver Ferns Kayla Cullen, Maia Wilson and recently retired international Leana de Bruin.

Joining de Bruin at the new Auckland franchise are two of her former Magic teammates, Courtney Tairi and Malia Paseka. The Stars have also snared former Mystics young guns Holly Fowler, Fa’amu Ioane and Sulu Fitzpatrick.

With the other five teams having announced their full lineups nearly two months ago, it was fairly obvious which players had landed at the Stars.

The big surprise in the 10-strong squad was the signing of Fijian international Afa Rusivakula in the import spot, and

the return of former New Zealand under-21 star Emma Iverson following a stint in rugby.

The new franchise will also boast star power on their management team with Temepara Bailey to serve as Julie Hoornweg’s assistant coach.

Hoornweg, the experienced Australian coach who set up the Melbourne Vixens in the former trans-Tasman competition, said she hopes the Northern Stars will bring a variety of opportunities to players, coaches and a new community of fans.

“Our aim is that this team will bring a new vitality to netball, and the opportunity for fans to see a bright, new shiny team. A team who are robust, athletic and exciting; who make you say ‘wow!’” she said.

“But we also want it to be a team that gives opportunity for netballers in this part of New Zealand.

“We want to create an identity here, and show young athletes there is a pathway to the top. We also want to build a community.

And if we can create a cauldron

of excitement and energy here, it will be absolutely fantastic.”

The Northern Stars have found a permanent home in Papakura at the brand new High Wire Trust gymnasium complex.

They will have full use of the indoor court, gymnasium and offices built by the High Wire Trust – a charitable trust which helps South Auckland teenagers to build confidence and self-esteem through physical pursuits.

Hoornweg is thrilled to be working with Bailey on the sidelines, and hopes to involve other local coaches with the Northern Stars.

“I’m very aware that I’m an Aussie taking a role a local coach could have taken, and I don’t want to bottleneck coaching here.

“It is one of my aims to share my knowledge and learnings of top-level netball with others,” she says.

The name “Northern Stars” was inspired by Matariki, the small cluster of stars which appear low on the northeast horizon just before dawn in mid-

winter. Also known as the Seven Sisters, or Pleiades in Greek legend, Matariki’s appearance heralds the start of the Maori New Year.

“That concept captured the spirit of the newest team in New Zealand’s domestic Netball competition - seven players ready to take on the challenge of a new season of competition,” says Bill Francis, the board chairman of the Northern Stars.

Matariki is incorporated into the team’s logo, which also features the Northern Stars’ colours of purple and silver.

The ANZ Premiership will see teams playing 15 round robin games, including Super Sundays featuring all six teams in action at the same venue, before culminating in a two-game finals series with the top three teams.

All games will be televised live.

Bright to leave Brad Jones Racing in 2017 After seven seasons with Albury’s own Supercars team, Jason Bright and Brad Jones Racing have confirmed they are parting ways at the end of 2016.

Bright arrived at the team in 2010, scoring BJR’s first race victory in Supercars at the Perth round a year later.

In all, Bright registered four race wins and seven pole positions during his tenure at BJR, the bulk coming as the team enjoyed a resurgence of form with the arrival of the Car of the Future era in 2013.

A highlight was Bright’s overall event win at Pukekohe in 2013 to clinch the inaugural Jason Richards Memorial Trophy, named in honour of the late New Zealand racer whom Bright had replaced aboard the team’s No. 8 BOCbacked car.

“The team Brad and Kim (Jones) have put together in Albury have been a pleasure to work with,” Bright said.

“The majority of the guys here now were here in my first year in 2010 which says a lot about the culture that BJR has.”

“I never thought I would drive for a team for seven years straight but BJR has made my time here a very satisfying chapter in my Supercar career. I will have to be careful not to pull into the wrong bay for a pit stop next season and in case I do I hope they can change my tyres.”

Bright notched up his 500th career start with the squad in Townsville last year, and has been racing on a year-to-year basis with BJR on the strength of a handshake deal between he and team owner Brad Jones for

the past few seasons.

“It’s been fantastic having Jason here over the years, he has been an instrumental part in making our team what it is today,” Jones said.

“Jason has been in Supercars for almost 20 years, and seven of those have been with us. We’ve achieved a lot together, so there are many fond memories.”

The team has yet to name a replacement driver for the 2017 season, and Bright has yet to confirm his plans for the new year.

Heartland champs roll on

Mid Canterbury maybe be out of contention but the Heartland Championship will roll on into the finals on Saturday.

Wanganui will be heavy favourites to retain the Meads Cup when they meet Buller in their final at Cooks Gardens.

The Butcher Boys’ quest to lift the Meads Cup again has been a relentless one.

After charging through the round robin stage with eight wins from eight outings, while taking the bonus point in all but one clash, Wanganui disposed of Wairarapa Bush 58-26 in their Meads Cup semi-final last week.

In contrast, Buller’s campaign has been a less consistent one, but the country’s smallest union is more than punching above its weight.

After an opening day loss to South Canterbury by just two points, Buller posted five consecutive wins, including a 34-32 downing of Mid Canterbury in Westport.

But their biggest scalp of the campaign came last week.

Buller were underdogs heading into their Meads Cup semifinal tie against a South Canterbury outfit that finished second on the round robin ladder, having lost just once.

Buller rose to the occasion in Timaru to take a 16-6 win in front of the dumbfounded South Canterbury faithful.

They will now be gunning for another upset this weekend.

The Lochore Cup final will be

A paralympian has been robbed of her medals in a brazen theft in Melbourne yesterday. Thieves smashed their way into the front passenger window and snatched the backpack, after watching Carol Cooke hide it before she went to training. “I had a backpack with some clothes because I was going to train after a ride at the gym,” she said. A staff member spotted Ms Cooke’s smashed car window and broke the news to her.

The Old Golds could only manage two wins, two draws and four losses in the round robin section, but, to their credit, put in a solid display against Mid Canterbury last weekend to

book a Lochore final berth.

North Otago and King Country have met already this season.

The two sides could not be separated in a 4-4 draw.

King Country were in the running for a Meads Cup spot until the final weekend of round robin play.

They had recorded four wins,

two draws and two losses along the way and secured a place in the Lochore final with a 48-26 win over Poverty Bay in last Saturday’s semi-final.

Meads Cup final: Wanganui v Buller, Cooks Gardens, 4.35pm.

Lochore Cup final: King Country v North Otago, Te Kuiti, 1.35pm.

You need to eliminate the errors and stick to the game plan and be switched on mentally to be consistent.

Mid Canterbury’s Heartland season came to an end following a 36-24 Lochore Cup semifinal loss to North Otago at the Ashburton Showgrounds last Saturday.

The defeat brought an end to what has been a frustrating campaign at times.

Ashburton Guardian News and Sports Co-ordinator James Ford caught up with Mid Canterbury co-coach Craig Dunlea to discuss the loss, and the future of the current squad.

Despite the season coming to an end sooner than anticipated, what positives have you taken from this campaign?

We have got a hell of a lot of

The world’s greatest rugby team is due to release a new version of one of its most iconic symbols – the coveted All Blacks jersey. No surprises about the colour – it is still black. But Adidas has announced it will be the “strongest ever’’ jersey in All Blacks history. The new shirt will be shown off at an official launch on Friday at the Adidas Newmarket store, in Auckland.

The collar, which in the past has been white, is back to black. The Silver Fern on the left side of the shirt appears to now be pure white, rather than the grey hue it has been previously.

Last Saturday’s result will have been disappointing for Hammers’ players and supporters alike. What do you think let Mid Canterbury down on the day?

Looking back on it, maybe we never changed our focus enough from the disappointment of missing out on the Meads Cup. That was our target and we were all very disappointed with failing there.

Stronger jersey

The 2016 squad has plenty of depth and young talent, what do you feel the future holds for the current crop of players?

There are a lot of very good young talent coming through the union, we need to keep developing these young players to help them get as far as they can in rugby.

It’s early days yet, but do you hope to return next season?

Definitely, there was a lot of positives and learnings in the season, which will hopefully make everyone better in the future.

Mid Canterbury co-coach Craig Dunlea. good young boys in the union that will be a lot better off with having a season of Heartland rugby under their belts.

There were moments of quality throughout the season but also some more forgettable performances.

Do you think this inconsistency was caused by the amount of new players in the squad?

No, I think it was more from our lack of concentration that led to inconsistencies, options and mistakes that you can get away with in club rugby, you don’t at the next level.

Finally, how would you sum up this season?

It was frustrating for the fact that when we stuck to our pattern and plans and held the ball we were very good and still believe we deserved to be in Meads Cup. But obviously we are not, which is disappointing, but the learnings we all had this year should be great moving forward into the future.

Aki strikes jackpot Former Chiefs back Bundee Aki has struck the jackpot in Ireland, his outstanding form being rewarded with a massive new contract at Connacht. Centre Aki – who qualifies to play for Ireland towards the end of next year – was a key performer in Connacht’s triumph in the 2015/16 Pro12, a competition involving clubs from Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales. He was the Connacht and Pro12 player of the year. There are various reports of what Aki’s new contract is worth, ranging from $530,000 to nearly $1m a year.

Cited for comments Melbourne Victory coach Kevin Muscat faces a possible suspension after being cited for comments he made following the 2-0 loss to Melbourne City in the FFA Cup semi-final. Muscat was furious that the opening goal to City’s Luke Brattan was allowed to stand, despite Tim Cahill being in an offside position and being forced to duck out of the way of the shot.

Muscat also said City’s players were guilty of “lots of rolling around and lots of diving” and slowing the restart of play. He claimed referees were using “two sets of rules” and exclaimed that “at least the FFA gets the result they want” as he exited the room.

Ingram released Perth’s NBL title defence has suffered another setback, with star American import Andre Ingram granted a release on mental health grounds, effective immediately.

The 30-year-old shooting guard’s departure comes at a cruel time for the Wildcats, with point guards Damian Martin and Jarrod Kenny both out through injury. “In a time like this we have to focus on the individual, and right now Andre’s welfare is our number one priority,” Wildcats managing director Nick Marvin said.

Barrett the worst kicker There’s not a lot Beauden Barrett can’t do.

He scored the most points, gained the most metres, beat the most defenders, set up the most tries, and was second for tries scored during the 2016 Rugby Championship.

Watching him slide through defenders, or take command of his backline troops is like poetry in motion.

But is he the “complete” machine?

There’s no doubt Barrett is one of the best attacking players. Perhaps even the undisputed best.

But even coach Hansen said the All Blacks had just taken a traditional second receiver role, and moved it one position closer.

Is Barrett really a natural-born first-five? Well there’s one argument to suggest he’s not - he’s the worst goal kicker in international rugby right now.

Statistics gathered by goalkickers.co.za chart the kicks by all players around the world.

They rank the kicks based on position, distance, altitude, score difference (to indicate pressure), home/away avantages and more.

It gives players a combined rating based on how many kicks they get, and how difficult they are.

The fact Barrett has the lowest rating of 36 kickers in world rugby in 2016 should tell you something. The average rating (out of 10) for kickers who have had more than 20 kick attempts in 2016 is 5.83.

Barret’s rating is 3.910.

And if you want it a little more clearly, he’s kicking at just 69.1 per cent.

The top four kickers, all from the Northern Hemisphere, average 84 per cent.

And these stats all come before Barrett’s 0 for 4 performance on Saturday night, which would put his kicking percentage at 62.7 per cent.

Beauden Barrett has the worst kicking stats of any goal kicker in international rugby this year.

Goalkickers.co.za also assign “Value Added” to each kicker’s rating.

This is their description - “Value Added indicates the value added on the scoreboard by the goal kicker relative to other professional goal kickers.

“It is the number of points the kicker scored more than expected given the difficulty of his kicks. The higher the kicker’s Value Added the better the performance.”

Of the eight kickers who have had 20 attempts or more, six have a positive number.

In fact, top kickers Greg Laidlaw from Scotland and Owen Farrell from England add 14 and 12 points to their team respectively. Bernard Foley is the

only other negative to pair with Beauden Barrett. His rating is -2.

And Beauden? Drum roll please ...

He’s -11.

“A kicker with a negative Value Added actually lost his team points due to poor kicking relative to other professional goal kickers and given the difficulty of his kicks.”

Therefore, Barrett is losing, on average, 11 points more than any other kicker in world rugby.

All kickers miss some goals, but scaled and combined together, he’s losing 11 points that almost every other kicker wouldn’t lose.

Well, maybe Barrett’s kicks are just harder?

Not the case. His kick difficulty

rating is the second lowest of the eight prominent kickers.

This isn’t to say Barrett should be dropped, nor does it suggest he isn’t one of the best in the world at what he does.

But maybe it suggests that he shouldn’t be the All Blacks goto kicker, especially when they travel to the Northern Hemisphere where kicking is such a pivotal aspect.

Other Facts Barrett hasn’t kicked a single kick beyond 30m this year.

He averages just 55.5 per cent from the sidelines.

He has attempted the second most amount of kicks this season with 55. Owen Farrell has just three more with 58.

Hansen in a class of his own When it comes to coaching, Steve Hansen is in a class of his own.

Hansen has become one of the most successful coaches in professional sport.

A look at his resume tells the story.

- Hansen has coached the All Blacks for a total of 64 matches since 2012. The All Blacks have lost just three and drawn two, good enough for a 92.2 per cent win rate.

- He has been named World Rugby coach of the year three times (2012, 2013, 2014) and looks odds-on to claim a fourth award this year, which would put him one behind his predecessor Graham Henry.

- Amazingly, Hansen is undefeated at home, going a perfect 28/28.

- His teams like to score a lot, beating opponents by an average of 21.5 points.

- He has coached the All Blacks in 64 tests, the second most by any New Zealand coach. Henry leads the way with 103 tests as coach.

- In 2013, Hansen-lead New Zealand became the first rugby nation in the professional era to achieve a 100 per cent record in a calendar year.

- The All Blacks trophy cabinet under Hansen is: Rugby World Cup - 2015 Rugby Championship - 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016 Bledisloe Cup - 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 Freedom Cup - 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 Hillary Shield - 2013, 2014 Dave Gallaher Trophy - 2013 World Rugby Team of the Year 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 - Perhaps the only blemish on Hansen’s CV is the 2015 Rugby Championship. In a shortened competition to ensure better preparation for the World Cup, the All Blacks lost to Australia, who eventually went on to claim the title after an undefeated tournament.

That must have really bugged Hansen, because he hasn’t lost since.

Ferns keep Australia tryless Job done. Now for the bigger challenges of the northern tour.

The Blacks Ferns were predictably untroubled in sweeping the series 2-0 after defeating the Australian Wallaroos in Albany.

They retain the Laurie O’Reilly Memorial Trophy and have laid a solid foundation for next year’s Women’s Rugby World Cup in Ireland.

But for a long time they did not hit the high notes and will be disappointed they did not take a big step forward from Saturday’s first test, won 67-3 at Eden Park.

There was too much dropped ball, a key work-on from four days ago, and some tweaked backline combinations – Hazel Tubic went into No 10 in the

second spell with Carla Hohepa to centre – did not quite gel.

The Wallaroos did hold the Black Ferns for large tracts of the first half, stiffening up their defensive line, which was so porous at Eden Park.

The wind was swirly, and there were squalls of rain before a small but vocal crowd at QBE Stadium.

Flanker Sarah Goss crossed after just four minutes, breaking through a lineout not long after Wallaroos No 14 CobieJane Morgan was sinbinned.

Prop Toka Natua dived over from close range and, at 12-3, the Black Ferns were travelling at a point a minute. But, despite a plethora of lineout ball from home town girl Charmaine Smith, it never re-

ally clicked for the Ferns. Kendra Cocksedge scored a try that was ruled out, as did Te Kura Ngata-Aerengamate from a nifty lineout move.

Honey Hireme did score after a Renee Wickliffe thrust. Selica Winiata, who had few opportunities to inject herself, ran in a sweet try from more than 50m out with her sheer pace.

“It was a bit messy but there.

One thing we took out of it was that we didn’t let them score on us, which was a big goal of ours,” says Smith.

“I’m loving the lineouts, though. We had the opportunity today to have a few attacking ones.”

One of those attacking lineouts, called by Smith, nearly yielded a try to second five Kelly Brazier, who jumped at the

front, but it was ruled out as the ball did not travel the 5m.

Australia’s pack, led by locks Alisha Hewett and Chloe Butler, were industrious and much more physical than at Eden Park, whilst the scrum stood up to some severe heat.

But the Wallaroos appeared to have little organised offensively.

The Black Ferns reassemble in a fortnight for their northern tour, in which they face Canada, Ireland and England, all sides who should feature at the pointy end of the World Cup. Photo predicts Cubs to win 2016 World Series Chicago Cubs fans are looking at a 23-year-old yearbook photo as a good omen.

The Cubs famously haven’t won a World Series since 1908, but in 1993, high school student Michael Lee outrageously predicted 2016 World Series glory for the Cubs in his yearbook picture.

At the time of the prediction, Chicago Cubs All-Star shortstop Addison Russell wasn’t even born yet!

The photo has resurfaced and gone viral after Twitter user Thomas J. Dale posted a photo of the yearbook prediction.

Although faking a yearbook picture is as easy as a few clicks on Photoshop, one Reddit user named number1makeitso backed

up the prediction after claiming to have found four other copies of the same yearbook, all featuring Lee’s prediction. The user posted them on Imgur as evidence: And Lee’s former classmate Marcos Meza never forgot the prediction, according to a local Chicago TV station.

“When [Lee and I] connected on Facebook in 2009 I sent him the photo and told him we were nearing 2016.

“He posted the photo of his prediction on August 8,” Meza told WGN TV. “After my Dodgers lost it was time for me to make this go viral and BeLEEve in the Cubs for 2016.”

Now all Lee can do is wait and see if the Cubs pull it off.

Sport Wood scores for Leeds All Whites striker Chris Wood came off the bench to strike late and then scored in a penalty shootout to help Leeds United reach the quarter-finals of the League Cup. Leeds edged past fellow Championship side Norwich 3-2 on penalties after the match was level 2-2 after extra-time. Wood netted in the 109th minute to draw Leeds level for a second time after he was brought on as a substitute midway through the second half. He then converted Leeds’ first spot kick to help send the home side into the last eight of the competition.

Close to 700 students descended on Hinds School on Tuesday to compete in the annual Hinds School Athletics Day. Hinds was joined by five other schools which included Mayfield School, Ashburton

Christian School, Wakanui School, Longbeach School and Mt Somers Springburn School.

The students took part in sprints, discus, long jump, high jump, shotput and long distance.

They also had a go at sack racing, spud racing and an ob-

stacle course.

Hinds School year three and four teacher Nic Hill said all the students had a “really great time”.

The 239 Tinwald School students also took full advantage of the good weather yesterday and had their athletics day.

Peter Livingstone said he was “really happy” with the day.

He said the students were well behaved and there was huge support from parents.

Livingstone said the school thought they would have to postpone some events but the weather turned out well.

“It was hot.”

Hayne confirmed to play Auckland NRL Nines Jarryd Hayne has been confirmed for the Auckland NRL Nines, as first revealed by Warriors halfback Shaun Johnson earlier this month.

Johnson let slip in an interview in the Crowd Goes Wild Breakfast on Radio Sport that the NFL convert and Titans fullback would take part in the Nines next year.

“He’s done a lot hasn’t he?

He’s an awesome player and

awesome athlete. We played him in his first game months ago and he smoked me,” Johnson said.

Promoters Duco officially made the announcement yester.
