Baby dies; no apology NZME The father of a baby who died from acute bacterial meningitis after he was sent home from Ashburton Hospital twice is angry his family is yet to receive an apology from the Canterbury District Health Board.

Seven-month-old Zoren Chaloner was taken to hospital three times over four days in early November suffering from a cough, fever and runny nose, but he was sent home twice with ibuprofen, paraceta-

mol and electrolytes despite suffering a seizure.

His family took him to a GP who rang the hospital asking why a urine test wasn’t done.

Zoren died four days later, shortly after he was admitted to the hospital for the third time.

“As a father, there’s nothing harder than seeing your baby boy fighting so hard for his life and those people that you trusted [who] would help him in his fight didn’t help him. I couldn’t even get in there and

help him fight it,” his father David Chaloner said.

“Those people at the hospital ... they should have done those tests, he would’ve been alive today. It was real devastating.”

He said he tried talking to his son to fight it out but he didn’t make it.

“It was my daughter’s birthday – it’s really sad because the day of her birthday is the day her brother died. That’s going to stick forever. I’d give anything to have him back.”

He said it shouldn’t have happened and

he wanted something done about it.

“Haven’t even received an apology from the DHB ... got it from the doctors.”

Chaloner said he didn’t receive any further details from the DHB, just the coroner’s report.

Canterbury DHB chief medical officer Dr Sue Nightingale in a statement said: “On behalf of the DHB, I express my sympathy to the family of this young boy.

“As the death has been referred to the coroner, we are unable to comment further.”

The award comes hot on the heels of improvements at the ski area, and the planning of new improvements leading into 2020.

Last season saw two kilometres of new trails opened and substantial investment in sustainability initiatives across the mountain, including eliminating all single use cups and cutlery in the food and beverage outlets and installing a new food waste system.

“For the 2020 season we are investing in more snow guns, a new groomer and doubling the supply rate of water to our snowmaking system to ensure we continue to enjoy one of the longest seasons in New Zealand,” McKenzie said.

“We’ll also be adding another 44-seater bus to our transport fleet, to transfer guests from lower carparks more efficiently, along with further upgrades to our access road and carparks.”

The World Ski Awards is the only global initiative to recognise, reward and celebrate excellence in ski tourism.

The Mt Hutt team will be celebrating the win with guests at Coca Cola Christmas in the Park in Christchurch this weekend with snow play and giveaways in the kids’ zone.

Mt Hutt has won New Zealand’s best ski resort award for the fifth year in a row.

General manager operations James Urquhart accepted the award at the World Ski Awards gala dinner in Kitzbühel, Austria, at the weekend.

“It’s a neat moment to be standing amongst the best-of-the-best in the ski industry and accepting this award on behalf of the Mt Hutt team,” Urquhart said.

Ski area manager James McKenzie said the accolade underscored an affinity and passion guests had for the mountain, and he was grateful skiers and snowboarders voted for Mt Hutt.

He believed people appreciated the ski area’s hospitality, mix of terrain, kaitiakitanga (environmental guardianship) and competitive pricing and packages such as Kids4Free.

He thanked the ski area’s team members, and appreciated his colleague, known mostly by his nickname Cheesey, accepting the accolade on behalf of the ski area.

“Cheesey has been part of the Mt Hutt family for 15 years and passionate staff like him are a huge part of what makes us so successful. Receiving this award for the fifth year in a row is an incredible achievement and testament to how hard our team

“We have had hail before, about seven or eight years ago, but it’s pretty rare, it’s always a possibility,” Honeywell said.

“It would have been devastating in a few weeks’ time, because a lot more crops would have been damaged. It’s just a bit of a blow really, at this stage,” he said.

Police fears grow over meth use

An increase in methamphetamine related arrests across the Mid South Canterbury area is reflecting the concern Police have about the damage the drug can cause.

In 2016 59 arrests were made in relation to methamphetamine offences.

That increased in 2017 to 68 and jumped significantly in 2018 to 119 arrests.

From January to June this year 74 arrests have already been made.

Ashburton sub-area supervisor senior sergeant Leigh Jenkins said meth and the offending that often surrounds the sale of it is a concern for the Ashburton Police.

“Police are working to target the criminal organisations that profit from the supply of methamphetamine into communities right across the country.

“This includes in the Ashburton District,” Jenkins said.

“At the same time, we apply our discretion with low-level methamphetamine offences so people may receive pre-charge warnings or referrals to appropriate support services to help break the addiction cycle.”

Jenkins said there was more to making communities resilient to meth than just making arrests, and that supporting small communities affected by meth use is critical, as is the ongoing wraparound process to support them.

land Drug Trends Survey showed that methamphetamine prices have dropped to record lows in Mid Canterbury as supply into the South Island increases.

The median price for a gram of meth is down from almost $600 in the 2017-18 period to $500 in 2018-19 across the wider Canterbury region.

Researcher Chris Wilkins said at the time the price had been declining in the South Island in particular, a result which reflected the expansion of the market from the North Island to the South Island.

The research was conducted by asking drug users themselves what the current price of the drugs were, and overall 10,966 people competed the survey.

Researchers found the declining prices in the South Island were consistent with official reports from police of gangs expanding methamphetamine selling into rural and South Island regions.

Trott’s Garden certainly had its best foot forward for the open day on Sunday.

The sun shone brightly on the perfect flower beds, neatly trimmed hedgerows and immaculate lawns, as one thousand visitors accepted the invitation to experience what is on their doorstep.

The day was punctuated with children running barefoot on the grass, groups sitting in the shade enjoying their picnic and enjoying many stalls, while the sounds of Jim Lischner’s music floated in the air.

Trott’s Garden marketing administrator Nicola Walker said she was really pleased with how the day went, saying that the open days serve a dual purpose.

“We want locals to experience what is right on their doorstep, as well as a chance to show what we can offer in the way of weddings and functions,” she said.

As well as the garden looking superb the chapel got a makeover for the occasion.

A beautiful floral arrangement above the chapel entrance welcomed prospective bridal couples through the door.

“Samantha Rose did a fantastic job, the flowers in the chapel were just superb,” Walker said.

Running with the wedding theme half of the marquee was also set up to show different options for wedding function setups. Local businesses Samantha Rose Flowers, Silk Estate Marquee Weddings, 24 Catering and Delux Cakes all combined to showcase their considerable talents.

No open garden day is complete without Devonshire teas.

“The Devonshire teas were very popular. We had the sides of the marquee open so people could spill out of the marquee onto the lawn.”

Popularity didn’t stop at the Devonshire tea tent. Netherby School were stationed on the

big lawn where, for a two dollar donation, you could make your own flower arrangement to take home.

If you missed the open day there is no need to worry, up until at least Christmas time the garden will be open seven days a week from 10am to 4pm.

“The garden is free to enter, but donations are always welcome,” Walker said.

In 2007 the Trott’s Garden Charitable Trust was set up in order to retain the gardens in the local community. All of the roles undertaken in running the established garden are on a purely volunteer basis.

“We are always looking for more volunteers to help maintain the garden, as well as meet and greet people who can talk to visitors about the garden and the shop.”

Taste of Christmas a foodie’s delight As much as Christmas is all about the warm-hearted cheer of the season, it is also about food.

And no-one is more aware of this than The Somerset Grocer owners Mark and Nicky Milmine, who are preparing for their annual Taste of Christmas at the café and bar tomorrow.

Crews from Willowby were first to arrive and extinguished the fire in the tractor which was destroyed by the fire as well as a small amount of nearby grass. Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman Andrew Norris said crews were finished by 11.15am and that the fire was not being treated as suspicious.

Event-goers to Ashburton’s Nights of Lights festival in Baring Square East will be able to tick Christmas shopping off their to-do list during the festive activities, with several local retailers extending their opening hours on Friday, November 29 and Friday, December 13.

The retailers are getting behind the town’s end-ofyear Christmas activities by opening until 7pm on the nights, allowing residents to get their shopping done ready for the holidays.

The $50,000 question that has no answer I

t’s a $50,000 question that no one seems to know the correct answer to, but it’s one which nevertheless is polarising opinions across the Ashburton District.

Should newly elected mayor, Neil Brown, have a car for his term at the helm of this district?

The writing was on the wall at last week’s Ashburton District Council meeting when the proposal was put forward. That two councillors on a bench of nine were against the decision from the outset was a perfect indicator that not everyone was going to be happy with the outcome.

It’s a choice given at the start of each term of council should the mayor choose to seek that option.

During the last term, it wasn’t sought by the then mayor through her own personal choice, she instead chose to claim for mileage on her own vehicle – a figure which amounted to roughly $17,000 during her tenure.

From what is public information, the decisions faced last week centered around three viable options; remaining with the status quo which would see

each council determine whether or not to provide a vehicle if requested by the mayor, provide a vehicle with restrictions in place around its use or to not provide a vehicle at all.

And it would seem the middle option was the preferred choice.

But is the real debate here whether or not mayor Brown should be allocated a vehicle, or more about the overall cost that was discussed in last week’s meeting?

A lot of water probably still needs to go under the bridge on the subject, there’s no doubting that, but if Brown chooses to use the vehicle for his own personal use, as well as business related matters, then he will receive a deduction from his salary to the

tune of more than $4000 per annum.

Realistically, it’s not so much a case of whether or not it should be an option, but more a case of how much it will cost the ratepayers of this district and many, it would seem, think it’s a little too expensive at $50,000.

And it’s hard to disagree.

There are a lot of vehicles available out there that could be purchased or leased for the role for a significantly less amount of money than what has been quoted in this instance.

A more than adequate vehicle could be purchased for an amount which would be of far less financial cost.

What we do know is that Ashburton has a larger roading

network than many of its fellow councils and the amount of distance which is required to be travelled to get from one corner of the district to the other is considerable.

One thing that is for certain, if the mayor is to go ahead with the vehicle at the announced cost, he’ll need to ensure he’s proactive and visible around the district, thus in some small way justifying the decision by ensuring that his consitituents are at least getting some air time for their investment.

That’s a challenge which will likely be easier said than done, yes.

But a challenge that should be accepted with enthusiasm considering the circumstances.

Keep your pets happy this summer S

ummertime will officially kick off at the end of this week and, with the warmer conditions and holiday season set to get under way, now is the time for dog owners to start thinking about the wellbeing of their pets in the months ahead.

Favourable sunny weather usually sees more people out exploring the district with their dogs and there are no shortage of great places right on our doorstep to head off to, however, I’d urge people to please respect the need for leads to stay on where they should be.

One of the council’s responsibilities in providing dog control services is balancing the opportunities for dogs to be adequately exercised with the need for other members of the community to be safe from nuisance dog behaviours.

is comfortable with someone else’s unleashed dog wandering up to them or their leashed pet.

Unfortunately, these situations can also be very dangerous.

That’s why we urge owners to utilise our designated offleash dog exercise areas that are available around Ashburton and Methven, and to keep their dog on a lead in all other public areas, both for their dog’s wellbeing and the wider community.

You should also consider the temperature outside before clipping on the leash. Sizzling

footpaths and roads can quickly burn your dog’s paws. A general rule to help avoid this is to test the surface temperature on your own skin: if the footpath is too hot for your palm, then it’s too hot for your dog.

Walking earlier in the morning or later in the evening can also help avoid heat exhaustion.

The end-of-year period usually also signals holidays for many families, but while you’re planning your activities, make sure to organise proper arrangements for your dog too.

If you can’t take your pet away with you, look into booking them into a boarding kennel, take them to a friend or family member’s house or organise a live-in dog sitter.

Lebanese protests unsettling AP Clashes between Lebanese protesters and supporters of the Shiite militant Hezbollah group are putting Lebanon’s military and security forces in a delicate position, threatening to crack open the country’s dangerous fault lines amid a political deadlock.

For weeks, the Lebanese security forces have taken pains to protect anti-government protesters, in stark contrast to Iraq, where police have killed more than 340 people over the past month in a bloody response to similar protests.

The overnight violence gave a preview into a worst-case scenario for Lebanon’s crisis, with the country’s US-trained military increasingly in the middle between pro- and anti-Hezbollah factions.

By attacking protesters, Hezbollah sent a message that it is willing to use force to protect its political power.

Confronting the powerful Iranian-backed Hezbollah, however, is out of the question for the military as doing so would wreck the neutral position it seeks to maintain and could split its ranks.

Weekend clashes brought into full display the political and sectarian divisions that protesters have said they want to end.

“Shiite, Shiite, Shiite!” Hezbollah supporters waving the group’s yellow flag shouted, taunting the protesters, many of them Christians. The protesters chanted back, “This is Lebanon, not Iran,” and “Terrorist, terrorist, Hezbollah is a terrorist” – the first time they have used such a chant.

the other main Shiite faction, Amal, attacked protesters who had blocked a main Beirut thoroughfare known as the Ring Road – a move the protesters said was aimed at exerting pressure on politicians to form a new government after Prime Minister Saad Hariri offered his resignation.

Carrying clubs and metal rods, the Hezbollah followers arrived on scooters, chanting pro-Hezbollah slogans. They beat up several protesters.

Both sides chanted insults, then threw stones at each other for hours.

Security forces stood between them but did little to stop the fighting. Finally, after several hours, they fired tear gas at both sides to disperse them.

The nationwide protests

have so far been overwhelmingly peaceful since they started mid October.

Politicians have failed to agree on a new Cabinet since Hariri’s government resigned.

Hezbollah and Amal insist Hariri form a new government made up of technocrats and politicians, but Hariri – echoing protester demands – says it must be made up only of experts who would focus on Lebanon’s economic crisis.

As the deadlock drags on, tempers are rising.

One person has been killed by security forces during the protests, while six have died in incidents related to the demonstrations. In the latest, a man and his sister-in-law burned to death after their car hit a metal barricade erected by protesters on a highway

Men exonerated after 36 years AP Three men incarcerated for 36 years in Maryland were exonerated Monday in the slaying of a Baltimore teenager after a review of their case.

Alfred Chestnut, Ransom Watkins and Andrew Stewart were released from custody hours after a judge cleared their convictions and prosecutors dropped the charges.

They were teenagers when they were sentenced to life in prison in 1984.

“On behalf of the criminal justice system, and I’m sure this means very little to you gentlemen, I’m going to apologise,” Circuit Court Judge Charles Peters told the men, the Baltimore Sun reported.

Chestnut, Watkins and Stewart were arrested on November 1983 for the slaying of 14-year-old DeWitt Duckett.

The case was reopened earlier this year by the office of Baltimore City State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby after Chestnut sent a letter to the Conviction Integrity Unit. The Washington Post reported Chestnut included exculpatory evidence he uncovered last year.

Prosecutors now say police reports show multiple witnesses told police that the suspect, who was 18 at the time of the crime, was the shooter.

One student saw him flee the scene and dump a gun as police arrived at Harlem Park Junior High School, but authorities at the time focused their investigation on the trio.

The new suspect was shot to death in 2002.

An assistant prosecutor working on the case told the court in 1984 that the state did not have any reports that

would have raised doubts about the defendants’ guilt even though police records had statements involving the 18-year-old and also showed trial witnesses had failed to identify the teenagers in photo lineups.

A judge sealed those documents, but Chestnut obtained them through a public records request last year.

“Everyone involved in this case – school officials, police, prosecutors, jurors, the media, and the community – rushed to judgment and allowed their tunnel vision to obscure obvious problems with the evidence,” said Shawn Armbrust, executive director of the Mid-Atlantic Innocence Project, which represents Watkins.

Armbrust added that “this case should be a lesson to everyone that the search for quick answers can lead to tragic results”.

Hezbollah issued a blistering statement condemning the road closure, painting the protests as a danger to the country. It called the deaths the result of “a militia attack carried out by groups of bandits who practice the ugliest methods of humiliation and terrorism against people”.

The army is one of the few state institutions that enjoy wide support and respect among the public as it is seen as a unifying force in the deeply divided country.

KiwiRail unveils road-rail hub concept

New Zealanders spent up large in the September quarter, upgrading their phones, TVs and electronic gadgets, new figures from StatsNZ show.

Retail spending rose by 1.6 per cent in the September quarter, well above the average market forecast for a 0.5 per cent gain, taking annual growth to 4.5 per cent.

Electrical and electronic goods retailing had the largest rise of all 15 retail industries, with sales volumes up 4.4 per cent after increasing 5.2 per cent in the June quarter.

“Higher electronic sales volumes in the quarter coincided with some retailers promoting sales of big-screen televisions before the Rugby World Cup in Japan, which started near the end of September,” retail statistics manager Sue Chapman said.

The electrical and electronic goods industry has shown consistent growth for over seven years, after a slight fall in March 2012.

“Products like TVs, computers, and mobile phones are getting cheaper, and New Zealanders are buying more of them,” Chapman said.

Despite falling prices, sales values of this industry were up 3.4 per cent in the September quarter.

Westpac economist Satish Ranchhod noted that spending increases were widespread across retail categories. As well as electronics the home furnishing category also rose sharply, consistent with the recent firming in the housing market, he said.

Spending was also up in department stores and supermarkets.

KiwiRail’s current yard in Palmerston North was established in 1964 on what was then the city’s north-western outskirts.

It has since become surrounded by urban development.

The city has since developed its North East Industrial Zone further north, near the existing rail line and the city’s airport.

KiwiRail says a major rail-road freight hub planned for Manawatu will improve efficiency and cater for the country’s long-term rail growth.

The concept facility, which will include log-handling yards, bulk fuel storage, warehousing and export container yards, was unveiled by Regional Economic Development Minister Shane Jones.

At three kilometres in length, it has been designed for trains up to 1.5 kilometres long – a 60 per cent increase in current length and capacity.

“A purposely designed facility to link rail and road together like this hasn’t been seen in New Zealand,” KiwiRail chief executive Greg Miller said in a statement.

“We are creating something world-class, which will support the growth of Manawatu’s logistics industry well into the future.”

KiwiRail announced its decision to relocate its Palmerston North operations out of the city in November.

Simply cooking with rice You have to love rice – it’s cheap, can be used in dozens of ways and it’s happy mixed with a wide range of ingredients.

While fluffy rice as a side dish is the cornerstone of curries and stir-fries, it’s equally at home baked or fried with vegetables, meat or eggs.

Broccoli and rice bake

Quick chicken fried rice 400g skinless breast fillets, cut into small pieces 1T oil 2 eggs, lightly beaten 1T oil, extra 1 small onion, finely chopped 3C cooked rice 1C peas 3 spring onions, finely chopped To serve – sweet chilli sauce and soy sauce ■■ Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat.

■■ Add the egg, and cook for 1 minute or until golden brown, flip and cook for a further 30 seconds.

■■ Remove from the heat and slice thinly. Set aside.

■■ Heat the extra oil in the frying pan.

■■ Add the chicken in batches and brown over high heat. Remove the chicken and set aside.

■■ Add the onion to the pan and cook over medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes.

■■ Add the browned chicken back to the pan with the rice.

■■ Stir-fry for 2 to 3 minutes or until the rice is hot.

■■ Add the peas and stir-fry for another minute.

■■ Add the sliced egg and the spring onion and gently mix.

■■ Spoon the fried rice into bowls and serve with sweet chilli sauce and soy sauce.

300g broccoli, cut into florets 60g butter 2T plain flour Pinch of cayenne pepper 2C (500ml) milk 3C warm, cooked long grain rice (from 1C raw) 100g prosciutto, roughly chopped 2 shallots, chopped 1/2 C tasty cheese, grated 1/3 C parmesan, grated 1/4 C fresh breadcrumbs ■■ Cook broccoli in a large saucepan of boiling, salted water for 3 minutes, until bright green.

■■ Drain, rinse under cold water and drain again. Set aside until needed.

Make white sauce: ■■ Melt 30g of butter in a saucepan on medium heat.

■■ Add flour and cayenne and cook, stirring, for 1 minute.

■■ Whisk in milk and cook for 4 minutes, stirring, until sauce bubbles and thickens.

■■ Simmer for 2 minutes.

■■ Combine broccoli, white sauce, rice, prosciutto, onion and tasty cheese and season.

■■ Spoon into an 8 cup-capacity baking dish.

■■ Preheat grill to high.

■■ Melt remaining butter in microwave.

■■ Combine melted butter, parmesan and breadcrumbs.

■■ Scatter over rice mixture.

■■ Grill for 2-3 minutes, until top is golden. Serve.

2T oil 1 onion, chopped 3 cloves garlic, sliced 1/2 C water 1 C arborio rice 2 courgettes, sliced 2 x 400g can diced tomatoes 1/2 green capsicum 1T brown sugar 1C chicken stock Salt and pepper 4 fresh lamb or lamb and mint sausages 1C grated cheese 1T chopped parsley for garnish 200g frozen peas, steamed

2T vegetable oil, plus 1T extra 1 medium brown onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 medium carrot, finely chopped 1 celery stick, thinly sliced 1 1/4 C long-grain white rice 2 1/2 C chicken stock 1 C frozen peas 4 chicken thigh fillets, cut into 2cm pieces 500g bottle tomato pasta sauce 2C grated mozzarella cheese 2T chopped flat-leaf parsley

■■ Preheat oven to 170°C. ■■ Heat oil in a large pot over medium heat, Add onion and garlic, cook for 3 minutes until softened.

■■ Add rice and stir for 2 minutes to lightly toast.

■■ Add water and stir until it has been absorbed.

■■ Add courgettes, tomatoes, capsicum, brown sugar, stock, salt and pepper.

■■ Bring it to a simmer then tip into an ovenproof dish, cover tightly.

■■ Bake in oven for 50 minutes or until the rice is tender.

■■ Place sausages onto a baking tray and cook for 10 minutes in the oven.

■■ Remove and cut into thirds.

■■ Ten minutes before the risotto is ready, poke the sausages in.

■■ Sprinkle with cheese and return to finish cooking.

■■ Remove from oven, sprinkle with parsley and serve hot with steamed peas on the side.

■■ Heat 2T of the oil in a medium saucepan over moderate heat.

■■ Add onion, garlic, carrot and celery. Cook, stirring, 3-4 minutes, or until softened.

■■ Add rice. Cook, stirring, 2-3 minutes or until well combined.

■■ Add stock; bring to the boil.

Reduce heat. Simmer, covered, 10-12 minutes, or until liquid is absorbed.

■■ Remove from heat. Stir in peas. Stand, covered, 5 minutes.

■■ Preheat oven to 180°C. ■■ Spoon rice mixture into a 30 x 20cm (8 cup) ovenproof dish; smooth surface.

■■ Heat extra oil in a clean pan over moderate heat.

■■ Add chicken. Cook, stirring, 3 minutes or until browned.

■■ Add pasta sauce; bring to a simmer.

■■ Pour sauce mixture over rice in dish.

■■ Sprinkle mozzarella and parsley evenly over top.

■■ Bake 15-20 minutes, or until cheese is golden brown.

■■ Remove from oven. Stand 5 minutes. Serve.

Pork fried rice 300g pork schnitzel, cut into strips or diced 1 small onion, diced 1t honey 1t sesame oil 1t soy sauce 1t dark soy sauce 1/4 t white pepper 4C cold cooked rice 1T oil 2 eggs – cooked into a simple omelette or scrambled.

1C bean sprouts 2 spring onions, sliced Salt to taste ■■ In a bowl, combine the honey, oil, soy sauce, dark soy sauce and white pepper, and mix well.

■■ In a wok fry the onion in oil until soft, then add the pork and fry until cooked, about 5-6 minutes.

■■ Add the cooked rice to heat through, and stir in the sauce to coat.

■■ Add the cooked eggs, fresh bean sprouts and spring onions, and serve immediately.

Beef and rice 2T olive oil or cooking spray 1 clove garlic, crushed 400g beef schnitzel, sliced 2T soy sauce 1T oyster sauce 1t crushed chilli pepper or sweet chilli sauce 1 pkt onion soup mix 1/4 C water 4C cold rice, cooked 2C frozen mixed vegetables 1 red capsicum, diced 1 egg, lightly beaten ■■ Heat oil in a large, non-stick frying pan. Add garlic and beef, cook until browned.

■■ Combine sauces, chilli, soup mix and water.

■■ Add to pan with rice, mixed vegetables and red capsicum.

■■ Stir-fry for 5 minutes or until vegetables are tender.

■■ Place in a serving dish.

■■ Add egg to pan, cook on medium heat until set.

■■ Roll up and cut into strips.

■■ Toss through fried rice and serve immediately.

Locals give tourney a fair nudge There was no local success to talk about, but those who travelled to Ashburton on the weekend to compete in the South Island Senior Doubles certainly left knowing who the locals were.

The annual tournament, which this year saw players coming from far and wide across the South Island to compete, received 16 entries, with three-and-a-half of those featuring players from Ashburton.

Dreams of a home-town success were quickly squashed however, with some stiff competition coming in to compete and although producing some strong efforts and really pushing some very capable combinations, none of the locals managed to work their way into the top eight playoffs on Sunday.

The tournament was won by a pairing from Alexandra.

This weekend four local players, Jan Guilford, Karen and Neville Bensdorp, and Richard Browne will compete as part of the Canterbury side playing in a triangular representative fixture.

Another coup for Classic

Sammi Mead and Night Beatle clear a rail at the Ashburton Area Show Jumping and Show Hunter Group event at the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds on the weekend.

Jumping stars come out to play The Ashburton Area Show Jumping and Show Hunter Group’s season began on the weekend at the Ashburton Showgrounds with a good number of riders turning out to compete.

Held in a mixed bag of conditions, finishing with some hot temperatures on Sunday, competition was held across nine different categories with some of the best rider and horse combinations in the South Island in action.

One of the feature classes of the weekend was the Pro-Am Rider Series Class and emerging on top with a double clear was Kirsty Sharapoff and Shoot The Breeze.

As well as finishing first in the Pro-Am, they then went on to finish third in the Horse Mini Prix Series Class, in which Katie Meredith produced the quinella with Westgrove GNZ and Ngahiwi Double Cross.

Grace Percy and Kiwi Spirit continued their success by winning their second Equissage Horse Grand Prix class in a row, making it two starts for two wins at Grand Prix level for the pair.

Fifteen-year-old Anna Nalder and Mangakaraa Carbon Copy took out the Country TV Pony Grand Prix.

Anna riding Icebreaker II also finished in 2nd place in the Equifibre Junior Rider Series Class. That was won by Beth Coleman aboard Sea Minor.

The consistent combination of Margaret Ridley and Tallaght picked up another win in the Dunstan Horsefeeds Amateur Rider Series Class.

The FMG Young Rider was won by Mackenzie Causer and Finch Farm Lasall.

Eighteen-year-old rising star Amanda Anisimova will return to the ASB Classic in 2020.

The young American is one of the most promising teenagers on tour and has shot up the rankings to sit just outside the top 20.

Last year, Anisimova became the youngest player ranked inside the top 100.

This season the tenacious teen stepped it up again by capturing her first WTA title at Bogota and making her first semi-final of a Grand Slam event at Roland Garros.

At an age where she could play in the junior event, Anisimova shock the tennis world by storming past world No. 3 Simona Halep 6-2, 6-4 in the quarter-final of Roland Garros.

This also saw her become the youngest woman to reach the final four since Nicole Vaidisova in 2006.

In the semi-final Anisimova lost to eventual winner Ashleigh Barty who would go on to become world No. 1.

ASB Classic tournament director Karl Budge is thrilled to have Anisimova return to Auckland.

“There have been a number of junior players who have promised so much but haven’t quite delivered on their potential, so to watch Amanda surpass those expectations this year is incredible, and we can’t wait to have her back at the ASB Classic,” said Budge.

Once-great series loses lustre

O

ne of the greatest racing series in all of Australasia begins this weekend, but the usual hype and excitement which usually surrounds it will be missing in action.

The Inter Dominion series, held each year, is supposed to be the mecca when it comes to the sport of harness racing.

It’s the best of the best, battling it out over three rounds of heats and then a rich final to round it all off.

It’s been the stomping ground for some of the best horses to have their back placed between the two shafts of a sulky and its long list of previous winners feasetures some of the biggest names in the game.

But when the latest edition begins at Alexandra Park in Auckland on Friday night, it’s hard not to see how things might seem a bit flat.

We’re missing the big names of the game, there’s barely enough horses to get the series off the ground and the overall general feel of things is pretty glum from an industry standard.

series, some of them – put bluntly – not deserving of actually being a part of an Inter Dominion and 22 will line up in the trotters equivalent, some in a similar boat to their pacing contemporaries.

Natural attrition and a little bit of bad luck could well mean that by the time we get to finals night in a few weeks, we could see field sizes diminished for the finals and the usual consolation races held all but non-existent.

A far from ideal situation considering the enormity and history behind the series.

But, this dilemma is no-one’s fault.

Organisers have worked tirelessly to get the best horses in Australasia here for the event and to be fair what they have got is a very even-looking line-up with

The problem is that the horse population is just not there at the open class level.

that years ago would have developed into a really nice open class horse is being sold at the juvenile stage for owners to cash in before things get too hard.

Series gone by over the years have been littered with big names and the crowds have come from far and wide to watch them in action.

This year I have visions of a desolate-looking Alexandra Park with just the normal low-key crowds in attendance.

I was at Addington in 1995 when the Australian Golden Reign did it tough against the likes of Victor Supreme and Blossom Lady and emerged victorious, but it wasn’t the victory that sticks in the memory, more the thousands of people who had flocked to Addington to enjoy the occasion.

They weren’t there for the booze and the short dresses and flashy suits like you see on Cup Day, they were there to see good quality harness racing with the best horses in the land out on the track doing the business.

The ill-fated grandstand was full to the brim – so much so, in fact, that I remember having to stand on the last flight of steps at the very top of the magnificent building just to be able to watch the final.

Oh how it would be great to get back to those days again – a proposition which right now seems to be in the realms of the impossible.

ABs coaching role ‘already a done deal’

bore? You bet. Sadly, the process to appoint the next All Blacks coach is also starting to look a

sham.

If we’re honest about it, this has never been a recruitment drive.

No, the intention has been a coronation, as the actions of all the leading alternatives have shown.

NZR’s planning looks to have been as sophisticated as assuming the All Blacks would win the 2019 Rugby World Cup and simply promoting Ian Foster from assistant to head coach.

Scott Robertson, an establishment figure like Foster, has remained in the running, with everyone else seeing this situation for what it was and making other plans.

You could say NZR should have been quicker off the mark and ensured men such as Jamie Joseph (Japan) and Dave Rennie (Australia) couldn’t be snapped up by other nations.

The fact is they haven’t, which can only mean one of two things.

First, they had no interest in either and, second, they assumed people would drop whatever verbal or written agreements they had elsewhere.

The reality is that, in some instances, these men don’t want to work for NZR and they certainly don’t want to be used as ‘evidence’ of an open and exhaustive recruitment process.

Scott Robertson and Ian Foster are in a two-horse race for the All Blacks’ coaching job.

Not when it involves an organisation they’ve had differences with in the past and, definitely not, when they assume it’s a done deal anyway.

Replacing Steve Hansen was always going to be interesting. He was such a massive and influential figure – not to mention a success – and wielded such a lot of power. There were times when it looked as though rugby in this country was run entirely for his benefit and, eventually, some people wearied of that.

Men such as Rennie, and fellow Super Rugby title-winning head coach Chris Boyd, spoke out

about Hansen and NZR and then had to fetch their coats and set off overseas. Neither wanted to go, necessarily, it’s just that there was only a limited future for them here after that.

We’ve all gone round in circles for what feels like a year or more, wondering who might occupy Hansen’s old spot.

Partly because the debate generates website traffic, but also because there’s no standout candidate.

You could make a case for eight or 10 different guys and all of them would do good jobs.

About the only thing people

appear united on is the fact they don’t want Foster. They don’t rate him as a coach and haven’t warmed to him as a man.

The suspicion has always been that he owed any success to Hansen and was lucky to get this far.

Had the All Blacks won the Rugby World Cup, then you assume Foster would just about have been appointed head coach on the spot. Everything pointed to Foster being NZR’s guy and they sure do like to keep things in the family.

Mark Robinson, the former Crusader and All Black, was a

World Rugby executive committee member alongside NZR chief executive Steve Tew for years.

Also a longtime NZR board member, Robinson now fills Tew’s position.

Robinson may be exceptionally capable and on the verge of implementing sweeping changes at NZR. But, rightly or wrongly, a lot of people will assume Robinson simply knows the secret handshake.

As does Foster.

Unfortunately for him, though, his own succession plans haven’t been helped by the All Blacks’ third-placed world cup finish.

That arguably makes Scott Robertson the prohibitive favourite, not that he doesn’t come with baggage too.

Notably because it would mean yet another Crusader in a leadership role at New Zealand Rugby.

Every one of us admires the Crusaders’ Super Rugby success, but you get yourself into dangerous territory when you decide one particular group of people knows better than everyone else.

More than anything, this whole thing has become tedious.

England have re-signed Eddie Jones as head coach, Japan have Joseph and Rennie’s now with Australia. Around the world other teams such as Ireland and Wales both had guys lined up to replace their departing coaches.

But not back here, where it seems NZR have always intended foisting Ian Foster on a fanbase that really don’t want him.

Punters may reap benefits

By Michael Guerin The unwanted canning on one of the Inter Dominion pacing heats looks set to have a silver lining for the series.

Because while punters will only have two pacing heats per night for the series which begins at Alexandra Park on Friday night, it could unwittingly lead to one of the best punting series in recent Inter Dominion history.

The series returns to Alexandra Park for the first time in eight years this week, with both pacing and trotting heats Friday, next Tuesday and the following Friday to decide the two fields of 12 for the December 15 finals.

The pacing series was programmed as three heats of up to 12 runners per night but that was reduced to two heats by the Inter Dominion Council when the withdrawal of Ball Of Art yesterday morning left only 25 pacers in the series.

While everybody involved would rather have three heats of at least 10 runners, Alexandra Park probably would have gone with three heats of nine, but once the number of final acceptors got down to 25 the decision was made to run heats of 12 and 13 to at least ensure all acceptors got a start.

The other option was one heat of nine and two of eight and with Inter Dominions usually having at least one or two horses pull out during the first week, three heats per night could have seen at least one seven-horse heat by Friday week.

While the reduction to two heats will annoy some, it has resulted in a rarity in competitive betting races, helped in no small way by the draws for Friday.

The traditional Inter Dominion format of three heats may be storied in its history but the reality is in recent years they have seen some very short priced favourites, dominant winners and plenty of uncompetitive racing.

The trotting series has two heats of 11 starters and the crunch heat of the night sees Marcoola drawn barrier one over 2200m, but

on a fast front line that includes NZ Trot Free-For-All winner and known fast beginner Tough Monarch.

If Marcoola returns to his best for new trainer Barry Purdon he could shorten dramatically for the final but if he is beaten from the ace draw the market will go the other way.

The other heat sees Dominion winner Habibi Inta drawn well at barrier four but no certainty to lead so the first heat of the series will start the uncertainty which could be the story of an intriguing fortnight.

Family comes before racing for Dixon

By Adam Hamilton Champion Queensland horseman Grant Dixon may be watching on TV rather than driving his stable star Colt Thirty One in the opening round of Auckland Inter Dominion heats on Friday.

Family comes first for Dixon and he’s not leaving home until his wife, Trista, gives birth to their third child.

“She’s due today (Tuesday), but nothing much is happening yet. I certainly wouldn’t want to go anywhere until she’s had the baby,” Dixon said.

“It’s another boy, that’ll give us three.”

Dixon said if timing became really tight, he would consult with

Colt Thirty One’s owner-breeder Kevin Seymour on a replacement driver for Friday.

Victorian John Caldow, who won on Colt Thirty One at Melton last start, or Luke McCarthy, who has Bling It On in the series, are obvious stand-by driving options.

Colt Thirty One is the lone hope to become the first Queensland-trained pacer to win the Inter Dominion since the record-breaking dominance of Blacks A Fake.

It’s fitting this year’s Inter Dominion is at Alexandra Park, the track where Blacks A Fake’s sixyear-old Inter Dominion assault came to an end.

to Im Themightyquinn in the 2011 Auckland final, which iced his Inter Dominion career record at six finals for four wins (2006, 2007, 2008) and two seconds (2009 and 2011). No other horse has won four finals.

Colt Thirty One is no Blacks A Fake, well certainly not yet, but this is not an overly strong Inter Dominion and he’s certainly shown enough through his Group 1 Blacks A Fake win and second in the Victoria Cup to say he may be a major player in Auckland.

Bling It On, who had a better run and beat Colt Thirty One in the Victoria Cup, is favourite in NZ’s Inter Dominion market.

“He’s shown he’s worthy of go-

ing, that’s for sure, but he can’t go and make his own luck. I’m not sure any horse really can in this series,” Dixon said. “He arrived Saturday and Dale Hogan, who travelled with him for his time in Victoria and now Auckland, said he’s seems really well.”

Unlike many Aussie trainers, Dixon is not fazed by Colt Thirty One having to race the opposite direction at Alexandra Park.

“No, he’s done one of his workouts every week of his life going right-handed, so it shouldn’t worry him,” he said.

“I’m more worried about me than him. I’ve never driven in NZ at all, let alone Alexandra Park.

I’m keen to get over there to get some practice.”

Leading jockey Matt Cameron is nervously waiting to hear how much of the lucrative summer racing period he will be forced to spend watching from the sidelines.

Cameron was injured after riding Visenya to a fifth-placed finish at New Plymouth last Friday.

“I came back, dismounted and started taking the saddle off the horse, and then she just brushed her back legs against one of those little hedges they have on the sides of the first to sixth stalls,” Cameron said.

“She got a bit of a fright and lunged forward, then kicked with both barrels.

“She got me in the knee, and straight away I felt something happen, whether it was a pull or a tear to a ligament, I’m not sure yet.

“But I’ve had it x-rayed and at least there’s no fracture.

“I’ll go to the knee specialist on Thursday morning and get the results of an MRI scan.

“That’s when I’ll have a better idea of what the damage is and how long I might be out of action for.”

The injury has already proven costly, with Leith Innes taking the mount on two-year-old colt Unition and winning Saturday’s Listed FastTrack Insurance 5K Bonus 2YO Stakes (1100m) at Pukekohe.

“Obviously it’s a bad time of year to have something like this happen,” Cameron said.

“I’ve been riding a few winners lately and getting on some good horses.

“Fingers crossed for some good news this week.

“Hopefully, if it’s not too bad, I might only be out for a few weeks. I might even be able to make it back

by Christmas, as long as I’m careful and don’t do anything too silly.”

Cameron has won 19 races this season including the Gr.3 Gold Trail Stakes (1200m) on Aretha and this month’s Gr.2 Coupland’s Bakeries Mile (1600m) on True Enough, who looms as a leading contender for the Gr.1 Captain Cook Stakes (1600m) at Trentham on December 7.

The Dean Taylor-trained pacer was driven quietly by O’Reilly before launching into the four-horse heat late in the race to win nicely from Lucy P (blue and red) and Maggie (inside).

Yesterday’s proceedings saw eight heats held across a couple of hours ahead of a big weekend of racing with meetings at Forbury Park in Dunedin, Addington, Oamaru and then Banks Peninsula.

As a Trainee Sock (Hosiery) Technician, you will undergo a full in-house training program which will enable you to understand all documentation and procedures, learn how to thread up and remove yarn cones from our bank of knitting machines.

Your keen eye for detail will ensure that production quality is in line with specifications and samples, learning how to identify and rectify knitting faults, and identify and repair processing errors.

You will learn how to maintain our bank of knitting machines during production and perform preventative maintenance/repairs to improve the performance and safety of the equipment.

Over time you will be able to take styles and designs from concept to prototype and production ready styles, whilst using the appropriate yarns and raw materials.

The field makes its way out of Mt Somers in the early stages of the Tinwald Cycling Club’s meeting on Sunday.

Opele grabs his opportunity The Tinwald Cycling Club travelled to Mt Somers to contest the Spray Marks, Stronechrubie, 45km mass start event on Sunday.

A stiff nor-wester kept a solid bunch of riders together to the turnaround at Hakatere Station.

Some fireworks out of the turnaround saw several riders miss the break, with a group of eight riders slipping off the front.

To add spice to the event the wind changed, ensuring a hard push home to the finish line.

With several attacks inside the final kilometres being shut down, Kev Opele chanced his arm inside the final kilometre and managed to slip off the front.

The charging bunch left their run too late and Opele held on for a well-deserved victory.

Brad Hudson stormed home to take second place, with Mark Summerfield taking the final podium spot.

Back in the field riders had plenty to race for with sealed handicap honours up for grabs.

Sarah Jenkins rode strongly to lift the sealed handicap trophy.

Ross Templeton secured the second place spoils, with overall

winner Kev Opele claiming the third place envelope.

The juniors and division 2 contested a 14km handicap event.

Cooper Spillane dug deep to keep the chasing riders at bay by the smallest of margins, staying away for the win. His sister Zoe Spillane charged though the field from the back mark to claim second place and fastest time hon-

ours, riding the distance in 30.58.

Jack Templeton continued his good form taking third place, but Daniel Gould was right on his tail in fourth. Lily Davidson and Mitch Brookland rounded out the top six. Sue Templeton took division 2 honours.

Next week the club will contest a 48km handicap event around the Grahams Road block.
