Sodden spring conditions are taking their toll on Mid Canterbury roads. This month is on track to be the wettest November for more than 65 years. Ashburton District Council service delivery group manager Neil McCann said while there had been no significant flooding in the district and no problems associated with surface water on the roading network, the roads in general had numerous potholes. These were to be temporarily made safe until contractors could undertake more permanent repairs once weather improved. In addition, crews were closely moni-

toring erosion on Jig Road, and the three sunshine bridges with the Hinds River in high flow, and abutment erosion at the Rangitata River Bridge was under repair. “At this time we cannot estimate additional costs, or if repairs can be taken care of by our normal maintenance schedule and budget; staff review of this is ongoing,” McCann said. Niwa, as of yesterday, had recorded 165.6 millimetres of rain this month for Ashburton. The last time there was a higher amount, for the whole of the month, was in 1967, when 165.9mm fell. Rain forecast for this week is likely to bump this month’s total higher, so it will be second only to the amount received

in 1952, when 273.10mm fell in the town. November 1952 was the wettest November since records began in 1927. The big wet has pushed annual rainfall figures to high levels and Niwa says so far 2018 is the fifth wettest year in Ashburton. The wettest on record was 1938, when 1147.5mm fell throughout the whole year. MetService data to 4pm Sunday shows the average year to date rainfall is 626mm, which is about two-thirds of 2018 to date, which is 943.4mm. The MetService is forecasting more rain for today and tomorrow, and a heavy rain watch has been issued for northern Canterbury.
